1982. Freshman year. 

First day of class. 

Everyone in your class was technically new, but you had an extra disadvantage on you, having just moved to Hawkins only a few weeks before school started– your new room was barely rid of the giant cardboard boxes. So, while everyone might be nervous about stepping inside the halls of Hawkins High for the first time, you knew that they all were already ahead of you by knowing their classmates. All these small-town kids knew each other. You were an outsider, and it was evident from the moment you noticed how everyone was staring at you. An unfamiliar face will do that. 

For most of the first half of the day, you didn’t speak to anyone. Keep your head low and stay out of trouble; that seemed the most straightforward strategy to survive this place. But then, at lunch, that whole strategy got interrupted when someone sat down next to you. 

Her hair was short and messy. Strands poking out at unnatural angles, wearing dungarees and an oversized sweater underneath, which felt too warm for the post-summer heat, even just looking at it. 

‘Uhmm, hi.’ The girl said with half a smile. 

‘Hi,’ you replied, mouth half full with a sandwich, but you hadn’t wanted to be rude by not responding.

‘I’m Robin,’ Robin introduced herself. You mumbled back your name. 

‘Yeah, I know,’ she said, quickly adding an explanation: ‘we have English together, so I heard the introduction Miss Fredrickson gave you.’ All you could do was nod. 

But the conversation continued and never really ended after that. Quickly and rather effortlessly, Robin became your best friend. And four years later, you were still glued to the hip. 

Spring Break. 

The first day of the free week and, magically, the first day of good weather. Yesterday it finally came. A sunny afternoon, but the warmth followed up a little later. Suddenly it became unbearable to stay in the house, so you and Robin decided to meet up. Just hang out around town, and tell each other what to buy with the money you didn’t have. 

‘Tell me, when did stuff get so expensive?’ You sighed, looking at a Blondie tape in the record store. Robin just shrugged as she skimmed through the store’s merchandise. There was a moment of silence between you as you both looked through the racks of cassettes and vinyl– not entirely silent, as the store had music playing. Still, neither of you spoke, just enjoying each other’s presence, showing finds the other might enjoy, knowing fully well you couldn’t afford any of it. It was time to get a job. 

‘Are you going to Steve’s party tonight?’ Robin asked eventually as you were leaving the store. 

‘Uhm, I guess. Don’t really have anything else going on.’ You weren’t the biggest fan of Steve “the Hair” Harrington, but ever since the previous summer, he and Robin had become genuinely friends, so you had very little to object about him. But something about the guy still irked you. 

And the chances of meeting the host of a house party are quite small—especially a party like Harrington’s. But somehow, the chances of meeting the last person you want to see at a party are much bigger. So therefore, you were immediately greeted with the sight of Steve and Robin talking when you walked into the house that evening. They were standing in a corner, chatting. He was holding a cup, most likely containing beer or a concoction with a remarkable percentage of alcohol. Robin also held a cup, but you didn’t even have to ask what she was drinking. It was always the same thing for the two of you. The cheapest red wine possible. The cheapness was an added and acquired taste. 

Robin spotted you almost immediately, ending the conversation she was in the middle of.

‘Here, have mine, I’ll go grab the bottle,’ she handed you her solo cup and almost immediately slipped away to the kitchen, leaving you in her spot next to Steve. 

‘Nice party,’ you said, looking out at the living room filled with drunk teenagers. 

‘Thanks.’ He took a sip of his drink; your eyes never met, and the conversation ended. It was your new record of most exchanged words between you. 

Objectively, there was nothing for you to hate about Steve. You knew there wasn’t. But every time you saw him hanging out with Robin, something boiled deep inside you. 

Luckily, Robin didn’t leave you alone for too long, coming back with her own cup and the remains of the wine in its bottle. Steve immediately saw that as a sign to go, departing with the words, “see you around, guys”, and disappearing in the crowd. 

You took a sip of the wine. ‘This is shit.’ 

‘I know,’ Robin said. You both took large gulps to finish your cups. When done, you both spoke up, simultaneously interrupting each other and laughing it off. ‘You go first,’ Robin let you. 

‘What were you and Steve talking about? When I walked in?’ you remembered how quickly Robin shut the conversation up, and immediately left the room. And then Steve was so quick to leave too. 

‘Uhm, that’s kind of what I wanted to talk about actually, but— not here, preferably.’  She took your hand and guided you through the masses. It wasn’t a smooth passage, as she kept bumping into people, and you lost grip on each other in several instances, but finally managed to get up the stairs and into a bedroom. The music was still audible, but much softer. At a comfortable volume the both of you could keep. It just got so overwhelming sometimes. 

You sat down on the bed, sipping from the solo cup, watching Robin walk up and down the room.

‘So, we’ve known each other for a pretty long time?’

‘I’d say so, yeah,’ you chuckled. This probably wasn’t the longest friendship for either of you, but for sure the most significant one. It felt like it had lasted centuries. 

‘Right, yes. So I really don’t want to say or do anything that might ruin that because that would really suck, and I’ve been trying to find a way to say it in the least destrucitble way, but every time I just seem to spiral down this hole of sentences and my mouth vomits out words pretty much like I’m doing right now.

‘And you asked me what I was talking about with Steve, and he was actually trying to help me figure out what to say but I already screwed that up and I’m still going for some reason–’

‘Rob!’ She froze at the sound of your voice. ‘How much did you have to drink?’

‘A couple glasses, but I’m not drunk. Not in that sense at least. Like, I know what I’m doing— or I’m trying to do what I know I want to do, I just don’t know how to do it– or say it. It’s not that it’s difficult either, per say, but I’m freaking myself out about it, you know–’ she couldn’t contain her nervous giggling in between her words. 

‘Ok, so just tell me. I promise I won’t be mad.’ You couldn’t think of anything that Robin could do to upset you as much as she thought it could. 

Robin opened her mouth and the beginning of a word came out, but she pushed it right back in. She took another sip of her wine. You mirrored her and when you were both done, you could hear her take a deep breath. 

‘I like you– like, really really like you.’ 

You blinked slowly, trying to comprehend the statement as Robin kept on rambling: 

‘You don’t even have to say anything back, I really don’t expect it. And if you don’t want to be friends anymore, I totally get that, but I couldn’t keep it in anymore because everytime we’re together my heart just explodes and my head spins so here’s my trying to sort all of that out by being honest–what?’ She only stopped talking when you got off the bed. 

‘Don’t be mad,’ you said, softly, before cupping her face and gently kissing her. It was brief, sweet, and both of you melted into it. Then, when you pulled away, ‘And yeah, you’re right, I don’t want to be friends anymore.’

‘What?’ She blinked, dazed and confused, but you quickly elaborated before breaking Robin’s heart into a million pieces. 

‘“Just friends” won’t cut it. I really like you too.’ And you kissed her again.

It's that time again, spotify wrapped 2022. And my number one artist, I'm sure surprising no-one is, ba ba ba baaa

Which honestly is actually less time than I've spent listening to them. I listened to ruin a Lot on bandcamp.

Other highlights of this year include

Holy smokes that is Many minutes, can you tell I pretty much live on Spotify at the moment xD

I honestly have very little idea what Alt Z and Otacore is, I'm assuming otacore has something to do with Japanese music? Which id fair I went through a heft period of listening to the Belle soundtrack (go check out Belle its gorgeous). Also I really didn't think I listened to show tunes that much aha.

All very solid songs and podcasts. These podcasts have really helped me get through this year. And I highly recommend Everybody's Worried About Owen, a fantastic creator.

And finally...whatever this means. I blame the Scissor Sisters and Tom Leher.

So in summary

I have spent far too much time this year on spotify lol.

Kanye West's Net Worth In 2022: Ye Is No Longer A Billionaire

Until recently, almost everything Kanye West touched turned to gold. Ye hit the top of the charts like clockwork, sold out arenas in minutes, and made shoes like nothing anyone has seen before with huge price tags. All of his accomplishments once made him not only a pioneer in several industries but along with a very wealthy entertainer.

But all that came crashing down when West began making controversial public statements, many of which were filled with hate speech towards Black and Jewish communities. He was dropped by the talent agency CAA and lost lucrative partnerships with fashion houses like Balenciaga. On Oct. 25, after many weeks of public outcry, German sportswear company Adidas officially terminated their contract with his Yeezy brand, putting a large dent in his previous ten-figure net worth. Later the same day, Gap announced that they are taking “immediate steps” to remove Yeezy products from their stores. 

Let’s take a look at how the artist amassed a net worth into the billions before losing a significant portion of it.

5 Ways Kanye West Makes His Money

1. Music

West’s forays into the apparel industry were the primary reason for his previous multi-billion dollar net worth, but it all started with the music. The rapper and designer rank among the bestselling and most successful artists ever when looking at critical acclaim and sales.

When his oft-delayed full-length Donda arrived, West scored his milestone tenth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, becoming just the seventh musician in U.S. history to reach that mark. In doing so, he joined a club that includes Eminem, The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, and frequent collaborator Jay-Z, with whom he shares one of his chart-toppers. On the Hot 100 in America, West has landed four No. 1s, 20 top 10s, and 135 appearances on the list, the fifth-most of all time.

Throughout his career, West has shifted certified 25.5 millionalbums in the U.S. and 124 million singles, the fifth-most among all artists in history. That figure expands to an estimated 140 million songs moved throughout the world. A 22-time Grammy winner (out of 75 nominations), West is tied for the tenth-most trophies among all artists, as well as the second-most among rappers, coming in behind only Jay-Z by one award.

In 2020, the Valentiam Group valued West’s music catalog at $110.5 million.

2. Music Businesses

West launched his record label GOOD Music, which stands for Getting Out Our Dreams, in 2005. In the nearly 20 years the company has been in business, albums from label signees John Legend, Common, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, and Big Sean have all performed well sales-wise.

In March 2015, West was one of 16 famous figures who appeared during a press conference for the launch of the new streaming service Tidal. He stood alongside Nicki Minaj, Daft Punk, Calvin Harris, Jason Aldean, Madonna, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Jay-Z, who was the business mastermind behind the event. West was named as a co-owner, and despite the inclusion of many of the most popular musicians in the business, Tidal never became as popular as competitors like Apple Music or Spotify. In 2017, West left the firm, claiming he was owed at least $3 million.

3. Touring

West has headlined half a dozen tours throughout his career, racking up combined grosses of more than $190 million. He has also opened for Usher, U2, and The Rolling Stones, with the last two treks wrapping as some of the highest-earning of all time. The rapper warmed up the crowd for U2, whose Vertigo Tour brought in $389 million. After he finished that run of shows, he joined The Rolling Stones, whose A Bigger Bang venture earned $558 million at the box office.

The “Hurricane” rapper has also played the occasional private concert, earning millions for doing so. It was reported that in 2011 West and Jay-Z flew to Dubai to perform for a sheikh’s family, for which they were reportedly paid $6 million. On his own, the hip-hop musician also took home $3 million for signing on to be the entertainment at the 2013 wedding of the grandson of then-Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

While he hasn’t embarked on a proper tour of his own since 2016’s The Saint Pablo Tour, West has still managed to sell tens of thousands of tickets to a handful of live events. Throughout the summer of 2021, West played his new album Donda for crowds in Atlanta and Chicago, with fans paying to listen to something that wasn’t even done yet. In past years, he’s also brought his religious group Sunday Service to a handful of shows, which fans could buy tickets for.

4. Shoes

The vast majority of West’s net worth comes from his success as a shoe designer. He got his start creating footwear for Nike, and with the sportswear brand, he crafted three bestselling products before their partnership ended. West saw how well his creations were selling and he wanted to earn royalties, but the clothing giant wasn’t willing to relent, and thus he broke off the deal. West has also designed shoes for companies like Louis Vuitton, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Bape.

West continued making money when he jumped ship from Nike and went over to Adidas, where he remained until Oct. 25 when the company officially cut ties after his anti-Jewish remarks. His Yeezy brand was a financial success for the two with Forbesreporting that Adidas attributed 4-8% of their overall sales to the partnership. Every time the company announced a new item, it was known to sell out instantly. In fact, the first pair to be released by West and Adidas, known as the Yeezy Boost 750, was limited to just 9,000 pairs, and they sold out in 10 minutes.

The rapper has released at least a dozen different shoe designs with Adidas, which offered him royalties, unlike Nike. In 2019, the Yeezy line reportedly raked in $1.3 billion in revenue for Adidas, with West personally pocketing about $147 million of that. In 2020, that number jumped to $1.7 billion for the brand, while he earned another $191 million in royalties. 

When Adidas walked away in 2022, it was estimated that this partnership made up $1.5 billionof West’s net worth.

5. Clothing

Around the time he jumped into designing shoes, West also created a clothing line he called DW Kanye West. His debut line was criticized by journalists in the space, though he pushed forward to create more. While reviews did get better, the project didn’t last very long.

In 2020, West signed a decade-long deal with Gap to bring his unique style and the Yeezy name(which he still owns despite his working with Adidas for so many years) to the American chain of stores in association with Spanish luxury fashion brand Balenciaga. The first item to emerge from the partnership was a puffy jacket that sold for $200 in pre-orders, while later merchandising drops appeared in large trash bags in stores to much controversy. 

An early estimate stated that West’s line with Gap brought in as much as $1 billion in incremental sales in its first year, but Gap and Balenciaga both also terminated their partnerships with West in September and October, respectively. It is believed that $970 million of West’s fortune could be attributed to the Gap deal.

What Is Kanye West’s Net Worth?

$400 MILLION

Forbes previously estimated West’s net worth at $1.8 billion as of April 3, 2022, while West claimed during a 2022 interview with Hollywood Unlocked that he was worth $10 billion. In 2021, Billboard pegged his net worth at $6.6 billion, so the range of what experts believed the hip-hop staple was worth previously varied widely. But with his recent controversies, West’s net worth has plummeted to $400 million.

Another brand that is popular with Gen Z is Spotify. Spotify wrapped is a campaign they run at the end of every year that consistently engages gen z. I wanted to research into to see why its so hugely successful

After looking at some articles and based on my own experience Spotify wrapped is so popular because it is personalised to the user, its interactive/engaging and has sharability. When Spotify wrapped comes out you see everyone posting it across their social media which builds a lot of hype. It creates community and lets people engage with people who have similar music taste.

A big part of why Spotify wrapped is so popular is the design. Every year it is different but use bright colourful visuals

It's that time of the year again! Where I get to out my all yearly listening habits for the sake of your literary entertainment in the shape of song-inspired blurbs!!

First of, before we get into the list, a little housekeeping:

2022 Music Recommendations

2022 – What an interesting year. Parts of it felt like maybe, just maybe, there was some progress and rebuilding being made from the fallout of a global pandemic.  Yet there was still that feeling of uncertainty and something else I can’t quite put my finger on.  A friend of mine said earlier in the year “I liked listening to music before my anxiety ruined it for me!”.  That elicited a mild chuckle, but sure, I get it - It’s a weird time. Events and life moving in multiple directions with music so often in parallel to that

Observations and listening habits: • Techno-ebm still ruling the majority of what I listen to and purchase.  In that genre, enjoyed the new releases from General Dynamics, Comfort Cure, Konkurs, GBxCL, Maedon, Yansyet, and Damaged Clock amongst others, • That new beat/Italo/future-synth sound had some absolute bangers. Pablo Bozzi remains such a skilled and incredible talent.  His own solo material and his collab with Hayden of Phase Fatale as Soft Crash were both remarkable. Tracks from Infravision, Fractions and Normal Bias all astounding. A fun and uplifting style. • Synthpop and Wave continued to be robust this year with releases from Minuit Machine, Figure Section, Boy Harsher (that “Machina” track was EVERYWHERE!!!), Sacred Skin, Handful of Snowdrops and more. My most favorite in this category included the “We Were Never Lost” album from Causeway that included an awesome cover of New Order’s “Your Silent Face”. • Alternative, Pop, Shoegaze, Post-Punk records from Hatchie,  Placebo, Mint-Julep,  The Present Moment, were welcome listens.   • The old industrial genre still churns and occasionally my ears will listen. New X Marks the Pedwalk was another sensational example of that projects superiority with future-pop. New Noise Unit came as a surprise and was a mish mash of styles/ideas that didn’t always work in my opinion but a track like “Alone Again” was a real gem. • The Serfs and Kubler-Ross get special mention for assiduously nailing the minimal analog industrial/ebm dance sounds of yesteryear with a modern touch. SO GOOD!!! • Essential reissues from Front Line Assembly and Delerium, Portion Control, Mentallo and the Fixer, and Dive were great to see. If you missed them the first time around now is your chance for rediscovery. The Sigbefia Five/Formal Defect was especially epic as prices for the OG were skyrocketing in value. • I need to think of a creative descriptor name for acts like Zola Jesus and King Dude. Two artist whose albums this year were among the most cathartic releases I experienced.  Uncommonly poignant, moody and so much more. I felt both drained and liberated after listening to each. • Biggest surprise of the year: Xpropaganda. 37 years after the masterpiece “A Secret Wish” Claudia Brücken and Susanne Freytag release the remarkable stunning comeback LP, The Heart Is Strange. intricately detailed it picks up naturally where “A Secret Wish left off – dramatic, soothing and peaceful.

Ah, I could go on and on. I love writing and talking about music. Your comments and conversation are welcome, but let’s wrap this up…

This isn’t a top 10, top 25 or even a top 50. Instead, it’s an A-Z recommendation list encompassing many genres as those lines are getting more and more blurred. A good tune is a good tune, regardless of genre.  

HIGHLY encourage you to get out there and seek out new music; Visit the record stores, go hear a new DJ, fire up Spotify or another streaming service, check out some new music via podcast, DJ mixes, label sites, online retailers, even Facebook. One of the best sources for discovering new music is BandCamp – a plethora of discoveries to be found out there. If you do the work, you’ll be rewarded ;)     Speaking of Spotify – I made a playlist this year featuring plenty of the bands on my list. There’s at least a track or more from the artist who have a presence on Spotify. Sadly a few bands on this list aren’t on the platform but check BandCamp and you can have a listen. As in years past I’m certain I missed a few things, ignored the hype on certain releases or just plain forgotten something. It’s a chore to compile this list, but I love to do it. There’s a ton of new pioneering music out there for sure waiting to be discovered and it’s the “what’s next” that keeps me a motivated music fan. There’s never a dull moment in speaking, writing, DJ'ing or promoting new music, so I’ll keep doing it and hopefully be a guide for you all ;).   If it needs mention and I overlooked it - I may do an addendum in the next week or so.
