Exploring the pressures of being a princess and the expectations placed on her.
Breath of the Wild Master Works, Pages 64 and 65
Zelda dons this ceremonial clothing of pure white when she undergoes her training to unlock her sacred sealing power. Because Calamity Ganon is revived immediately after she returns from her pilgrimage to Mount Lanayru, she makes her way all the way to the castle in this clothing to confront the Calamity, so she is still wearing this outfit when she meets Link again after she releases the seal a hundred years later.
Designers’ Notes
When Zelda appears in the fragments of Link’s memories, we wanted to give the player a powerful sense of “I want to know more about her, and I want to save her.” The concept of “a princess who is unable to use her sealing power” was born from the background setting of a calamitous defeat that occurred one hundred years ago. We wanted to create an emotionally effective scenario precisely because this is such a long-running series.
- Naoki Mori, Cinematic Design
Zelda is a reigning princess, but she is also a young woman whom we wanted to be realistic and relatable. We incorporated both sides of her personality along with the idea that she had reached an age at which she would no longer want to be seen as a child. We aimed for three costume designs that would help the player appreciate how cute and admirable she is with the condition that she would choose her own outfits and accessories appropriate to the time, place, and occasion.
- Hirohito Shinoda, Lead Artist: NPC

#Cursed Bloodlines
#Triforce of Power
Have you ever heard of the 'Groose is Ganondorf' theory?
No, but I love that idea! Even though he’d be like the dorkiest Ganondorf incarnation possible, but that’s kind of inherently awesome…
We’ve had an LoZ game where Zelda is Link’s traveling companion… (and I’m up for more of those!) But how fun would it be to have a game where Ganondorf fills that role?
Especially if he was a ginormous dork; it’d be perfect if that game’s Link had a more “cool” personality (like in BotW).
(BTW, if anyone asks, I will draw this comic’s Gan with Groose’s hairdo.)

Thinking about how a lot of the aphmau characters had favorite things that I wished was discussed more (both in the series and in fandom discussions) like for example Garroth’s favorite video game being Legend of Zelda and how he even cosplayed as Link in Mystreet Season 1 Anime Convention. Another example being Laurance’s interest in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Like does that mean he’s kind of a metalhead? I love hearing about the characters’ interests and hobbies. It makes them feel like real people with more to them than meets the eye if that makes sense. I know we talk about Zane being a brony a lot but what about the other characters too?
I’m really writing this because Garroth liking Zelda was driving me insane. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but were some of the interests inspired by their actual voice actors’ interests? Like for instance Laurance liking that band, did his VA like it too?
ANYWAYS, garroth liking Zelda just fits because him being a knight in MCD and that translating into Mystreet as him liking those kinds of characters and media. He would have loved A Knight’s Tale (2001). I actually saw someone on instagram say that Heath Ledger in that movie would be their fan-cast for Garroth and I agree. Also saw on twitter a tweet of Aphmau and Garroth having matching Link and Zelda costumes for Halloween. It was so cute!!! Literally them.
So yea, sorry for my little ramble, I just needed to speak about this. I might post this on twitter too since there’s a community there as well. I’ll be posting my old headcanons and AUS to this blog as well!
#aphmau#garroth ro'meave#laurance zvahl#aphmau mystreet#mystreet#aphblr#minecraft diaries#aphmau mcd#also idk if anyone has seen this but on the aphmau wiki it says that garroth had a mullet in Mystreet at one point and I can not find that#clip pls help me if you know what episode it is#(personal hashtag for my posts)

If you'll permit a mini rant:
I am so tired of discussions around the Zelda series being about the damn timeline.
This goes back to the ocarina of time days, where people kept trying to work out what the timeline was, before word of god had come along to tell us what it was and the hamfisted "actually the timeline splits into 3 at ocarina of time" thing.
I've done a playthrough of the whole series in "timeline" order. It added basically nothing. Because these games were not made with a timeline in mind. They were made with the version of the legend each of them wanted to tell in mind. They broadly explore similar themes in different ways and the mechanics of the games evolve along with them. Release order makes WAY more sense to get a sense of progression of the series, "chronological" order feels like you're manically jumping around in a progression. Because you are!
Whenever i want to talk about the series, any fan community discussion seems to be 30-40% timeline discussion and it's just... the least interesting thing about the series to me.
Anyway, rant over. This is just me getting frustrated at petty fandom nonsense. It doesn't actually matter. If you did read this, thank you for indulging me.

#Zelda Community Discussions#Fan Theories
*Crashes through the wall again* If Nintendo weren't cowards they would finally just tell us that Groose is Ganondorf's ancestor like- I know Groose was a jackass pinning for Zelda's attention when she didn't want it and he bullied Link. But, being a young man and working your ass off because you take your schooling seriously just to see the punkass kid who is lazy get all this divine power and favor while you just watch on the sidelines must be frustrating as fuck. And even then Groose was able to help through the power of his own sheer will. In the same way Ganondorf is often denied access to this so-called divine right, working his ass off to become the powerhouse that he is only to be told over and over again that what the Hylians have in terms of the Goddesses favor is not for him to have or to be blessed with. And yet even then he makes himself known through the power of his own sheer will. And then has to watch as some punkass kid is handed all the tools in the name of divine right to come kick his ass.

fmk? try fml
written for a @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt, 'forced to choose'
BotW characters, modern!au setting, don’t think about it too hard - the idea was just unworkable in a more canon setting.
vague pretensions towards Revalink; content warning for implied alcohol/drug use. Dialogue heavy.
(about 1,090 words, I think?)
—
A sly look crept onto Purah's face. "Mipha."
Revali bristled. "We agreed not to mention any names in this room."
"You agreed," Purah said. "I didn't. Now, 'fess up."
He glanced at Mipha; she was shaking her head, a glint of amusement in her eyes. "It was nice knowing you all," she said, softly, and gave him an indulgently forgiving smile.
He definitely couldn't kill Mipha. "I abstain."
"Not allowed," Purah sing-songed back.
"It's the rules," Zelda piped up from the corner of the room, still sounding half asleep. She didn't look nearly so prim and princess-y with her hair tumbled around her in heavy snarls and her feet propped up against the wall. Hopefully she'd missed the part when Revali had needed to consider his chances against her stepmother. "You have to - hic - choose."
The party had already been dying down for a while by this point; they were among the last left, along with Zelda, who barely counted (she'd been asleep for the last hour), and a gaggle of Impa's friends, who'd retreated with her into her room to discuss musty matters of philosophy, or whatever it was that provoked such a buzz of debate behind closed doors. (Robbie, Purah's flatmate, academic rival, and "worst friend/best enemy", had likewise disappeared, though for a different kind of conference.)
They ought to be dragged out here and face the same indignity, Revali thought, still searching for a loophole that wasn't forthcoming. He would be forced to choose, one way or another.
"Tch." There was only one option. "Marry," he said, leaving just enough of a pause to take in their looks of shock, before continuing, "because spouses can't be compelled to testify against each other in a court of law, and we'll both be in need of the alibi."
Purah threw her head back and cackled. "True to form, you can't give up on the murder."
As if she was one to talk: "Robbie," he shot back.
"Killing." A curl of smoke drifted towards the ceiling. "Definitely killing."
"You've killed half of campus between you," Zelda pointed out. "Is anyone still alive?"
She said it like Revali was responsible, when the whole thing started because Purah just happened to be bored and this was less destructive than letting her build fully-functioning catapults out of the communal toaster. The catapults were works of art. The toasters were never the same again.
"Oh! I've got one for you, Zel..."
Outside, a roaring in the alley died down to a grumbling purr. Revali tilted his head towards the sound, trying to determine whether it was -- but it couldn't be. That guy had been given the night off from princessly bodyguarding duties.
"...Wouldn't have expected that from you!"
Whatever he'd missed, a glance at Zelda's burning-red face confirmed he ought to be glad not to have heard it.
"Maybe we should finish this now," Mipha suggested, the voice of reason -- or perhaps the voice of not wanting to be the one sober enough to hold anyone's hair (or feathers) back in the morning. But speaking up only brought attention her way.
"You've been quiet, Mi- Aren't you curious at all?"
Purah took up Zelda's line of attack: "Nobody's psyche you want to peer into?"
"Not really," said Mipha, too hesitantly for her own good; Purah continued to prod until she could only do her best to put her foot down.
"Last one," she said.
"Make sure to choose wisely~."
Revali and Mipha glanced at each other. Don't ask me, he thought, only for Mipha to say, "Revali-"
He glared. Mipha mouthed an apology.
Then ask Purah - Revali tried to signal it with his line of sight. 'Killing' Purah would be one way to end the game for good; they'd be within their rights to ignore the protestations of the so-recently deceased.
"Fuck, marry, or kill - um, let's see..."
Nobody had locked the door. A rush of cold air swept inside, trailing frosty fingers down the back of Revali's neck, and Mipha looked up in surprise. "Link?"
"Fuck!" Revali swore, lunging for the low table where Purah's stash of 'herb' was in full view; that guy was so straight-laced and boring that the only time Revali had ever seen an expression on his face was when Purah pulled it out in public. Then the realisation of what he'd said slammed into him.
Ignore that.
Zelda tried to sit upright, an inelegant manoeuvre given her previous contortions. "Link! What are you doing here?"
Silently, he pointed at the clock they'd deliberately forgotten to consult at any point, then held out a small object that should have been in Zelda's bag...
"Oh." It was Zelda's phone. "Oh, no - Urbosa's going to kill me - "
Link tossed it her way. His eyes scanned the room and settled on Revali; a frown was in them.
"Revali," Purah said loudly, "what did you just say?"
Mipha clapped her hands together, bracelets rattling. "That's it, game over!" To Revali she mouthed, Really?
"Nooooo," Purah said, "we need to know more about this. Confession of the century. Revali, you want to do what - "
"Pluck off," he snapped.
"That wasn't what you said before."
Making another valiant effort to maintain order, Mipha said, "We agreed this would stay in this room. Even you voted for that rule."
"Linky's in the room," Purah pointed out unhelpfully.
Revali made a grab for his scarf. "I'm leaving," he said, then left, though it was too late for a bus and too dark to fly and his legs never liked to cooperate after a drink.
Link caught up to him before the end of the street, jangling keys in a question.
"No," Revali said. "Absolutely not." He didn't know how much Link had heard, or pieced together. "There is no way -"
--
Revali didn't talk for the rest of the trip. The rush of air from a motorbike wasn't too dissimilar from the wind in his braids during flight. He told himself, firmly, that that was the only enjoyment to be found in this.
It wasn't long before they pulled up outside Revali's place.
Gratitude. Remember gratitude. "Thanks, I guess," he tried, though Link said nothing back, of course.
This was too awkward to bear. Revali turned his back on him and rummaged for a key.
"About before," Link said abruptly, steps clanking away down the metal steps - "Maybe when you're sober."
Revali froze. Before he could confront Link, Epona's engine growled back to life. He could only watch the red light sink into the darkness.
"As if," he muttered, and went inside.
#flashfictionfriday#ginnefic#fff306#a self-indulgently silly written for one (1) joke#for what it’s worth: revali’s verdict on urbosa was that he would *be* killed. terrible match-up. Mipha agreed.

Okay so. Link is a conduit. Link is the player's connection to the world of Hyrule.
In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Link is the connecting lines between the whole realm of Hyrule.
Breath of the Wild is Link alone, is him forging these connections. He's working to lay paths, to reconnect the world as best he can. It's been broken and so his job is to bring the pieces back together. Zelda tried to be this in her attempts to figure out her powers, but the task falls now to Link. He draws the Guardians back from their isolation, from our of Ganon's darkness, and forges new connections between them as well as their home kingdoms. He is the LITERAL LINK which connects all of Hyrule in their determination to defeat Ganon.
Tears of the Kingdom builds on this, because you've all ready forged these connections. It is about Link clearing the debris from these paths and affirming these connections. This is why you are allowed to travel in a group this time; it's about reinforcing those connections you've made and bolstering yours and the world's power. Strength is in these paths we've forged between one another. Once again, Link is the LITERAL LINK connecting all of Hyrule. This time, that connection is one of community and togetherness. Zelda, too, places her trust in Link and forges her strengths into Link's as well. She speaks on Link's behalf to each sage in the past, lays the groundwork for Link to help awaken the sages in their present.
Breath of the Wild is picking the world up off its feet and reminding everyone that they're stronger together. Tears of the Kingdom is taking those connections and using them as a blade to strike down the roots of this evil which divided them before.
I personally like Tears of the Kingdom more than Breath of the Wild, but I fully acknowledge that I wouldn't love it as much without the groundwork Breath of the Wild laid down. Also this isn't perfect but it stood out to me in the discussion of Tears of the Kingdom just being Breath of the Wild but More. Of course it is. It's taking what paths were laid down and bolstering them, building atop them to continue forging ahead.
#Momo writes stuff#Breath of the Wild#Tears of the Kingdom#botw#totk#Essay time for Momo#tloz link#Literary analysis brain goes brrrrr#I had thoughts about how Ganondorf is a man of war who splinters Hyrule in most iterations#OoT is the most splintered. WW and TP are splintered as well.#And how botw and totk do their best to rebuild these connections using Link in a way that counters the war strategy#But yeah. Anyway.#I love these games!

A Sage's Regret: Chapter 11
Chapter 11: The Sand Shroud
Word Count: 5155
CW: None
Want all the chapters? -> Masterlist
~~~ <> ~~~
You drop a wooden bowl on the table with a clatter, pushing it toward the man sitting before you. Steam rises from its contents, a warm stew of chicken, rice, and vegetables. Though his eyes are tired, you can see them brighten at the sight of the meal.
“Eat,” you say sternly, “and then we’ll talk. You look like a mess, I don’t even want to begin to think about how long you’ve been traveling Hyrule for.”
Link quickly digs into the food, shoveling heaping spoonfuls into his mouth with little regard for his manners. As he does so you take stock of your inventory, going through your mental checklist of the supplies you’ll need for the desert. With how brutal the sandstorm seemed to be, your main concern was your hydration, so you made a note to refill your canteens with fresh water. In terms of clothing and armor you would have to make do with what you had already, and if you got too hot you’d have to utilize things like ice fruits until you could find something to better help you combat the heat.
After bartering with the stablehand you’re able to purchase some more rations for your journey. By the time you’ve finished up your small list of chores, the blonde has finished his meal. With a heavy sigh you take a seat across from him, practically collapsing into the chair. You were tired as well, but first you needed to sort out your subordinate.
“So,” you prompt him, “what’s the story?”
Through a rather tired combination of signing and gesturing he explains to you that he had been on the move ever since the news of yourself and Zelda going missing occurred. He tells you that he had hardly been sleeping or eating, focusing solely on traveling as he desperately searched for any signs. He had even attempted to go down into the massive chasm left behind after Hyrule Castle rose into the sky, but the gloom emanating from the depths was far too overpowering and left him ill afterwards.
As he communicated all of this to you, exasperated and weary, you could read the emotions on his face clearly. The princess’ disappearance had him distraught. He was running himself ragged in an attempt to find any trace of her.
You, of course, related to him entirely. But where you were searching desperately for your best friend, he was searching for a woman he so-clearly had strong feelings for. Whether or not he had even realized those feelings yet, you could read them in him as clear as day.
Once he’s done you slowly nod your head, your concern evident on your face. “I see,” you mumble, folding your hands and setting them on the table, “sounds like you’ve had a tough few weeks. I could say the same. Of course, I’ve been looking for Zelda too, but I’ve also been trying to help people suffering since the Upheaval happened. There’s some nasty stuff out there.”
You explain all that you had seen ever since meeting the mummy. The sky, the depths, and the crisis of muck in Zora’s Domain. You tell him about the ancient waterworks and the water temple. You detail the fight with the monster that had been causing all of the sludge in the first place. As you speak you skirt around discussing Sidon, avoiding describing your interactions with him and giving minimal explanation about the fact that he had sworn himself to you as a sage.
As you speak Link listens, his eyes widen as he takes in the story. Though he’d been traveling across Hyrule, he had been tunnel-visioned on locating the princess. Aside from knowing about the chasms which had opened and the falling debris from the sky, he had been unaware of the worst effects from the Upheaval.
“That’s why I’m here now, to go to Gerudo Town,” you continue to explain, “I want to find a solution to quell this sand shroud. But also, I’m looking for more clues about what might have happened to Princess Zelda.”
What you omit from the conversation, though, was the ‘sightings’ of the princess that had happened. When you had seen her at Hyrule Castle, how she had allegedly summoned a monster to attack Dorephan in Zora’s Domain, and how you had seen a vision of her in the past when Sidon had received his secret stone. You chose not to tell Link about these, at least not yet, because to you something seemed off. Why would she float away from you, why would she attack the Zora king, and why would she appear in the past?
The last thing you wanted to do was give Link false hope, and you didn’t want to cause any confusion or panic if the word spread about these sightings of the princess.
Link hums, staring at the table momentarily before lifting his gaze. The look in his eyes is fierce and determined, in spite of the deep bags that gave away his fatigue. He lifts his hands and quickly signs: let - me - come - with - you.
You must have made a face, some manner of disgruntled expression, because he immediately seems displeased before you even have a chance to respond. “Link, you can’t come with me.”
Frustrated, he signs once more, though this time it’s much more firm: why - not - I - want - to - help.
“Look at you,” you retort, leaning across the table to make your point, “you’re exhausted. You’re working yourself to the bone and you’re in no state to assist in an investigation. If Gerudo Town is going to be anything like Zora’s Domain was, there are more threats waiting for us. You’re in no shape to fight.”
Link’s reply is simple, but effective: you - would - do - the - same.
This makes you pause. He was entirely correct, even if you didn’t want to admit it. Still, despite being a soldier in-training beneath you, you considered Link to be a civilian still. There were levels of danger you had endured that you couldn’t risk putting him through. “You will return to Lookout Landing and you will rest,” you instruct him.
He raises a brow and crosses his arms before simply shaking his head- an undeniable no. Refusal to obey your orders.
“Link,” you stress his name, “I’m serious- this isn’t going to be like training in the fields. We are dealing with monsters summoned by some of the worst evil this land has ever faced. You’re not ready-”
“Please-” he says, his voice hoarse and heavy with emotion.
The sound of it stuns you. In all of your years training him you had never heard him speak. You knew that he wasn’t mute, nor was there any damage to his throat or voice. Zelda had once made mention of hearing him speak when they were once in private. For whatever reason, he chose not to speak publicly. For him to finally speak now implied a great deal of importance to his plea.
“Please let me go with you,” he pleads, “I need to find her.”
Your eyes widen before you force yourself to look away, a frown on your face. You couldn’t fault him, you knew what must have been going through his mind. His desperation to save Zelda in part mirrored your own desperation to aid Sidon- and that was a similarity that you loathe to admit. Anxiously you gnaw at the inside of your cheek before sighing deeply, your shoulders dropping before you give him your response.
“... fine,” you relent, “we’ll leave early, before the sunrise, I want to avoid the heat as best as we can. So get to bed and sleep, you’re going to need it.”
His face lights up as you speak, his excitement palpable as he practically jumps out of his chair. He rushes back to the bed he’d paid for, seemingly sorting through his gear in preparation for the journey ahead. With a small groan you rub your temples, anticipating the stress that was awaiting you. You knew Link was far from helpless, he was a skilled fighter who had bested you many times while sparring. But this was far different from your practice, and it would be miniscule compared to the small horde of monsters you had once seen him fight.
You needed to relieve the tension you could feel building in your muscles.
“Piaffe,” you call out to the stablehand, “does this stable have communal showers?”
A few other stables throughout Hyrule had separate buildings to bathe in, and you had taken advantage of this many times in the past. But the Gerudo Canyon Stable had less land than the rest, due to how few people traveled this far south with horses. It was outfitted with fewer amenities because of this.
“No, we don’t, sorry,” he replies with an apology, already having begun closing the front desk for the night, “but if you travel a little farther west into the canyon there’s a natural spring that pours out the side of the mountain. Many travelers before have used it to bathe since it’s fresh water.”
You thank him for letting you know before returning to your belongings. You grab a change of clothing and something to dry yourself off afterward. ‘A quick shower will be nice,’ you think to yourself, ‘especially considering this sandstorm I’m about to enter. Who knows when’s the next time I’ll be able to feel completely clean.’
“I’ll be back, Link” you shout over your shoulder as you leave the stable, “don’t wait for me to come back, get some rest already.”
Quick on your feet you trek west through the canyon. You manage to move far enough away from the opening to the desert that the wind lightens, and so does the sand blowing through the air. After a few more minutes of wandering you find the spring that Piaffe had mentioned to you- a small fountain of water trickling out from the rocks of the mountain. It poured over an outcrop of stone, causing it to resemble a naturally formed shower. The water pooled into a small pond on the ground, only about as deep as your calves, the air in the desert likely evaporated the rest of it in the daytime.
The spring was nestled into a smaller corner of the canyon, but it was still a relatively open area. This late at night you knew there wouldn’t be anyone traveling the roads, and with the nearby sandstorm the canyon seemed practically deserted. Still, you knew that there may be monsters to worry about. You needed a way to guard yourself, even if the shower would be brief.
You spare a glance down at your arm, noticing that the ring Sidon’s vow had given you was reflecting the moonlight.
‘I could have his sage avatar stand watch. As far as I can tell it’s only a weapon, and it automatically senses nearby threats. I’ll have him guard the area while I hop in for a quick wash.’
Delicately you tap the rune which sits upon the face of the ring. In a flash of light the avatar appears, a copy of Sidon which stands silently before you. He blinks, the blank glow of his eyes staring back at your own as you gaze up at him.
“Um… hello,” you say softly, still unsure of how to speak to him, “I have a favor to ask of you. Do you mind standing guard? I just need you to keep an eye out for a few minutes. Just stay put and stand right there… I guess. Right where you are.”
There’s no response, as always, but yet you still found yourself waiting to see if the avatar would ever speak. Instead he blinks once more before turning away from you, looking out toward the rest of the canyon. ‘Well… I suppose that must mean he understood me?’ you think, stepping away from him slowly and returning your attention to the water.
You strip your clothing off quickly, setting your tunic, trousers, undergarments, and boots atop a nearby rock. Your sword is placed near them as well, just in case. As you step into the water and move beneath the trickling spring you let out an audible sigh, enjoying the feeling of cold water on your warm skin. You scrub off any dirt and grime that had built up during your time in the canyon, pick out sand from beneath your fingernails, and thoroughly rinse your scalp and face. Even after weeks of living with it, it still feels odd to cleanse the new arm you were given- the texture of the fur was so dissimilar to the skin on the rest of your body. You feared that you would never get used to it.
As you wash off, Sidon’s avatar does as he was instructed. Standing where you asked him to, keeping a keen eye on the area around you. The faint blue glow of his form washes over the area, a decent source of light as the moon was only half-filled tonight. As he turns his head to survey you’re fairly sure that he can see you, as well, keeping an eye out to ensure your safety. If he had any sort of conscience you may have felt charmed by this- though if he truly did have a conscience then you primarily would have felt embarrassment about bathing in such close quarters. But the avatar seemed to be nothing more than an empty vessel primed for combat, despite your wishes.
Once your shower is done you dry off and dress in a clean, fresh set of clothing. Once your boots are tugged on and your sword is grabbed you give a small shout to the avatar. “Alright, all done, you’re relieved of your duties now,” you say, a joking tone to your voice. There’s no response from him, he merely silently turns to face you once more. After a short pause you sigh, “man, I truly must be tired if I’m bantering with you now. Okay. Back to the ring you go.”
A quick tap on the ring dismissed him, and with his glow gone the area suddenly seems much darker than before. A short jog brings you back to the stables, and as you walk through the closed curtains you see that all of the oil lamps had been blown out for the night. In the dark you manage to tip-toe back to your bed, putting away your clothing before crawling beneath the covers. As you lay your head on the pillow, you think ahead toward the next leg of your journey.
You worried about what dangers might await you surrounding Gerudo Town, you hoped that Riju and all of her people were safe, and you prayed that this may bring you another step closer to finding Zelda.
Though you toss and turn with stress, you’re soon able to doze off to sleep. With only a few hours to rest, you hope to savor every moment. In spite of yourself, your dreams are once again plagued by a certain red-scaled Zora…
…
… Sidon wakes with a start, his heart pounding out of his chest as he sucks in a breath of air frantically. The pool of water that he sleeps in is disrupted, waves splashing against the walls as he flails momentarily. His face was hot, truly his entire body felt hot, and he groaned as he dragged across his face. He pulls himself out of the water, sitting on the edge as he attempts to calm his racing heart.
Ever since he had attained his secret stone and you had left the domain, the new king had stumbled across a revelation. There must have been some manner of connection between him and the sage avatar he had given you, beyond it being an extension of his powers.
He had quickly realized that whenever he slept, if the avatar was summoned by you, he’d be able to see through its eyes. Faintly, as if dreaming. Somehow the avatar was able to share its vision with him, only when he was at rest.
At first Sidon didn’t mind this. In fact, it thrilled him somewhat, being able to get a glimpse into your adventure- and more importantly for him, it was a way to ensure your safety. He could sleep soundly at night knowing that when he did he’d be given a way to see that you were still alive, still traveling, still searching for the princess.
But it took only a short few days for him to realize a flaw in this. Because you seemed to be completely unaware of this quirk with the avatar. At the very least, if you knew that Sidon could see through its eyes when he slept, you surely didn’t make any note of it. And he had become certain of this fact tonight. You didn’t know. You couldn’t know. Because you had chosen to have the avatar stand guard as you bathed.
His hand covers his mouth, a heavy sigh escaping him as he shuts his eyes. The image would be burned into his mind, just the mere glimpse of you standing there beneath the water. He could remember every detail, every curve and contour of your form, even in what felt like a dream he was mesmerized by the way your hands glided along your own body. He should have felt shame for the fact that he had bore witness to this and yet- and yet there was a small voice at the very back of his mind that revelled in it.
An airy chuckle escapes him, laughing at the predicament he had seemingly put himself in.
“Of course, the moment you leave me I am cursed with visions of you,” he whispers to himself, “only able to see you. Never able to reach out and hold you. I cannot even speak to you, only able to listen when you talk to that copy of me. What horrific irony.”
What at first seemed to be a gift from his vow was now becoming torturous. These visions at night haunted him, keeping you constantly out of reach from his grasp. He was beginning to question himself. Was this some manner of punishment? Were the goddesses above so cruel as to do this to him, to keep you away from him? Did they not understand that everything he had done- he had done it in an effort to fix his mistakes.
He had done it all for you.
There was no use in attempting to go back to sleep now. He drags himself away from the pool, quietly padding across the room to peer outside the window. To the east he could see the faintest streaks of orange being to appear on the horizon, the earliest indications of morning. No one in the domain would be awake at this time, save for the guards who were performing their duties overnight. It was as good a time as any for him to go wandering, allowing his thoughts to ruminate.
Sidon gets quickly dressed, drawing his sash across his chest and sliding his various adornments onto his neck and arms. His hands hesitate, just for a moment, as he reaches out toward the crown which is perched atop a small pedestal on his desk. Newly coronated, he still felt quite odd wearing the king’s crown. Once the ceremonial trident is securely sheathed along his back he leaves the room, making sure to softly shut the door behind him.
He walks through the halls of the palace in quiet contemplation, no real destination in mind as his feet carry him aimlessly. Soon he’s left the palace, walking across the plaza, and is soon walking down the pathway of the Great Zora Bridge. It is only when he arrives at the exit that he hears a voice sharply call out his name, quickly pulling him out of his thoughts.
“Sidon! Where in Hylia’s name are you going at this time?”
Bazz was standing guard near the very front of the domain, a rare occasion where he was taking part in the night shift. The captain had been sat atop some of the larger rocks, though he quickly hops down once he sees the monarch approaching. Spear in hand he jogs over quickly, concern etched into his expression.
“Oh, Bazz,” Sidon says softly, glancing up toward his friends, “worry not, I simply needed to take a walk. I wasn’t going to wander far.”
The guard nods with a knowing expression, “you’re thinking about something awfully hard, aren’t you? Let me ask… where is she now?”
Sidon confided in Bazz about nearly everything, which meant that his dear friend was well aware of the visions which had been plaguing him. He lets out a sigh before answering, “what I saw in my dreams tonight is that she is far, far south of here. Near the Gerudo Desert. Something terrible seems to be afoot, there’s a rather massive sandstorm. I’m sure that she will be seeking out the Gerudo chief tomorrow to try and help their people.”
“But she’s safe?” Bazz prompts him, leaning against his spear.
“Yes, she’s safe,” he replies, “rather stressed, it seems, but safe.”
The captain gives his friend a sympathetic look, “this will all blow over soon enough, I’m sure of it. All these issues caused by the Upheaval will be solved, the champion will locate the princess, and everything will calm down. We just need to hold it. It is not the first time we have seen Hyrule thrown out of balance.”
“I know, I know,” Sidon mutters, casting a glance downward to look at the glowing blue stone on the back of his hand. His secret stone glimmers, radiance and power emanating from it effortlessly. “You’re right. We will get through this. I’m merely-”
“Impatient?” Bazz offers, a grin on his face as he gently teases his friend.
Sidon matches his smile, “one would think. I fear as I grow older I may be losing the patience I once had. Perhaps as time passes I become more selfish as the days pass.”
“Oh, please,” the guard replies, making a dramatic show of rolling his eyes, “you’re hardly old, don’t speak like that. In terms of selfishness… perhaps a little, the stunt you pulled at the coronation was rather unprecedented. But you would never do anything if it would cause harm to the domain. The council may be upset, but I think in the future we will look back and see that rejecting your marriage to Yona was for the better.”
For a moment, this makes Sidon stop and think. Then he slowly nods. “I truly hope that you’re right,” he whispers, “I know that my decision was practically unheard of. And the elders are rather cross with myself and Lady Yona about this decision. But someday… someday we will look back and see that it was the right choice.”
The two men sit and chat for a while longer, watching the sunrise on the horizon. As the day arrives the domain begins to bustle with life, families swimming up from the water and the storefront opening up. From across the bridge chatter can be heard in the plaza as children run and play. When the changing of the guard occurs, Gaddisson approaches and greets the pair, bowing her head in respect to the king before switching positions with Bazz.
“So, your Majesty, what are your plans for the day? Any kingly duties to tend to,” the captain asks as he and Sidon return to the palace.
“I need to respond to some correspondence we received from Lookout Landing,” he replies, thoughtfully tapping a finger to his chin, “Doctor Purah was requesting soldiers to aid them as it seems that the amount of monster camps in Hyrule Field has increased significantly. With our sludge problem resolved I thought that it would be a fine idea to assist. After that, my father asked if I could join him on a hunt in the highlands. Now that he has retired from the throne he has a considerable amount of free-time on his hands, it seems.”
“Sounds like a relaxing day,” Bazz replies, before being interrupted by a yawn, “and it seems that this is my sign to retire to bed. The sun has risen, and I will be promptly hitting the hay, as it were.”
After sharing a laugh the two men bid each other goodbye before going their separate ways. Now that domain was more lively he took his appearance into account, making a point to walk with his back straight and head held high. He’s sure to greet everyone he passes, to check in with the shop owners, and entertain the children when they run up asking questions. Soon enough he makes his way to the tide pools, finally finding the Zora he was searching for.
“Hello, young one,” he says as he kneels beside the water, how are you today, Allegro?”
The little boy grins excitedly once he sees the king, splashing water as he quickly swims over. He wraps his small hand around one of Sidon’s fingers, babbling softly as he stares up at him. “Ba-ba!” he shouts, eyes wide with curiosity.
“No, it’s Sidon,” he replies gently, attempting to teach the boy his name.
It’s in vain, however, when the boy simply repeats “ba-ba” before turning his attention to a snail that crawls along the side of the pool.
There’s a fond smile on Sidon’s face as he watches the boy swim in small circles around the pool. He couldn’t help but feel reminded of you every time he came to visit Allegro, after all it was you who had found the boy and saved his life in the first place. He recalls the desperation and urgency you had when you begged for help to save him from the sludge, and he remembers your gentleness when you had worked with him to heal the boy’s sickness from the muck.
A soft sigh escapes him. He knows he must return to his duties soon. As he walks through the palace back to his chambers he can’t help but think of you once more. Surely, you were still safe, wherever you were now. He hoped that despite the raging sandstorm that the desert was treating you well.
…
Gerudo Town had been abandoned.
At least this was how it seemed when you arrived at the front gates and saw that there were no guards. Your trek across the desert had been difficult, even with you and Link leaving the stable early to avoid the midday heat. What you hadn’t realized was how cold the sand shroud would make it at night, you had to bundle yourself in layers to be able to make it to Kara Kara Bazaar safely. At the bazaar you were able to rest for a short while, and it was there where you were able to speak with some Gerudo women to be given advice on how to venture further.
You were warned that the shroud was bad enough to throw off your compass, so the Purah Pad would be of no use to you. But what was more concerning is that a few guards mentioned ‘strange creatures’ to you. They warned you that something was lurking in the sands, something new- likely as a result of the Upheaval. They told you to travel with caution.
With no compass and little-to-no visibility you both had to move forward slowly. Luckily within the shroud you found several air vents, large gusts that you could take advantage of with your paraglider. You were able to fly up above the cloud of sand for a few short moments to reorient yourself, and with each gust you could slowly travel closer and closer to the town.
It was when you finally arrived at Gerudo Town that the mystery only grew further. There were no guards, no civilians, not even the usual sand seals that would laze about near the entrances. When you peered inside past the gate you could see that the town had been ravaged by the sand shroud, several buildings were buried beneath piles of sand and many trees and overhangs had been knocked to the ground.
“This is worse than I thought,” you say to Link as you take shelter beneath the front gate of the town, “I was going to tell you that you’d have to wait outside the gates but… well… there’s no one here.”
The Hylian tilts his head to the side in confusion.
You roll your eyes, “don’t you remember? The Gerudo have a law that forbids men from entering their city limits. You wouldn’t be allowed to come in and meet Riju with me. Unless, I don’t know, we put you in some vai clothing and… lied… hmm.”
Link’s face goes blank as you stare at him. The gears in your head turn as you take in his figure before you firmly nod. “I’ve got an idea, c’mon,” you instruct him, grabbing onto his arm and crossing the threshold into the town.
You quickly sprint across the town square, taking further note of all of the damages. You find the front of the clothing store, pushing aside debris and wood to enter the building. “Hello?” you call out, hoping to see any signs of life. This is where the seamstress and her assistant would usually be. “Hello?” you say once more, hopeful.
There’s no response.
In the dim lighting Link signs to you: what - are - we - doing?
“Finding you a disguise,” you reply as you begin rummaging through the shelves, pulling out various pieces of fabric, “you’re a little short, and not too bulky. I think we can pass you off as a Hylian vai. A woman.”
He stands in the center of the room with wide eyes, staring at you incredulously. “What?” he croaks out, surprising you once more with the sound of his voice.
You laugh as you find a matching pair, a cyan top and billowy pants. “You have two options, pretend to be a woman or be forcefully thrown out by Buliara and her guards,” you reply, tossing the clothing in his direction, “you choose what you want, I would say that the former is smarter. Now I’ve just got to find a veil for you.”
The blonde groans and you chuckle at him once more. You bicker, mostly with yourself, as you attempt to find the outfit that would suit him the best as well as hide his boyish features. As you help him get dressed you begin to formulate a plan in your mind, thinking of the best places to start searching for the Gerudo people.
What you don’t notice, however, is the rustling of bones in a nearby pile of debris.
The design team explored different hairstyles to convey Zelda's character and emotional depth. They aimed to create a relatable character who embodies both the responsibilities of royalty and personal struggles, including her inability to manifest her sealing power. Zelda's hairstyle serves as a visual representation of her growth and emotional journey. The decision to give her a specific look, including braids and later styles, reflects her transition from a sheltered princess to a more autonomous character facing the challenges of Calamity Ganon.
Breath of the Wild Master Works, Page 66
We drew various facial expressions to accompany Zelda’s lines in the cutscenes. We wanted her expressions to convey the idea that she’s still a person with flaws even though she’s a sacred princess, and she became a vibrantly emotional character.
Merlinverse Interactions Game
Hey, y'all! So I had an idea for a fun little community-building exercise for the Merlinverse, just to help us all interact and get more familiar with each other and our OCs.
Basically, this link will take you to a site where you spin two wheels, one with an interaction prompt and the other with the name of a Merlinverse OC. You can then either make a post about how you think the interaction will play out (can be a short-fic, drabble, general thoughts, headcanons, whatever you want), or you can chat to the creator of that Merlin and have fun discussing the idea with them (you don't have to post a summary of the Merlins' interaction, but I think it'd be fun to see). You can participate even if your Merlin isn't on the wheel, though if you'd like them to be added feel free to reach out.
To make these interactions easier to find please use the tags #merlinverse, #merlinverse interactions and the tags for the ocs involved in any post you make (tags under cut).
Rules:
Be respectful of your fellow creators, don't harass anyone.
Be mindful that the person you're chatting to may be busy and unable to respond quickly.
No NSFW or sensitive topics unless you and the person you're chatting to have BOTH agreed to it (please add the appropriate warnings to your post too).
Just have fun!
Participating Merlins:
Sena (@bunnybird-afk, #magister sena) Celestino (@meepinmeat, #magister celestino) Violyste (@magister-violyste, #magister violyste) Pirin (@yohohonabottle, #pirin, #magister pirin) Molpe (@mcnana, #magister molpe) Zelda (@fgfirenation, #magister zelda) Starhawk (@fujimomozane, #magister merlin starhawk) Lavinia (@windmaedchen-oceanhorn, #dame lavinia) Rose (@afkhowstrange, #magister rose) Scylla (@confusedeldritch, #magister scylla) DK (@gloriousrebirth, #magister dk)
Feel free to let me know if you have any prompt ideas, want me to change your Merlin's tag, or if you want your Merlin added to the wheel.
Four Sages AU Notes
Here I’ll share all my ideas for the Four Sages AU I mentioned in my previous posts! It’s a lot so to those curious I hope it’s enjoyable. Huge thanks to @ratiorxtio , @floweredwishess , @omelevateart and @1caru for helping me form all these scenarios! It was so fun to discuss!!! Now without further ado all the thoughts under the cut!
• Shadow lives in a remote town near the Earth Temple, he lived with his parents before they were killed and he was told it was because of fate, that the Goddesses will demanded it. This is where his hate for the gods starts.
• When he goes into the village orphanage he meets Vio, another orphan, and they immediately become close. They become each other’s home, but Shadow’s hatred for the gods only grows when Vio is revealed to be the Earth Sage chosen by the gods. He feels it’s a slap to the face for the gods to stake their claim on someone else he loves.
• Shadow enters the village militia and becomes a swordsman, promising Vio he’ll protect him from any evils when they’re still young. The following years are peaceful, with Shadow helping Vio learn and tend to his sagely duties which include looking after the Earth Temple, blessing the land, etc.
• However all of this shatters as Vio receives word from Princess Zelda that something might be wrong with the temples, so he and Shadow go to take a look but while there Vio is taken by a monster and he summons a fairy to teleport Shadow to safety.
• Shadow is teleported to Hyrule Castle where it’s under attack, and he saves Zelda before she can be kidnapped by the monsters storming the castle. She tells him he must be the hero of destiny, which Shadow outright refuses, he helped but only because she’s the only person who might know what is going on and how he can save Vio.
• Zelda says she respects his decision but they’ll need each other if they want to save those they love. Shadow asks who was taken, and she says a friend of hers, the Wind Sage, was taken mere moments before he arrived, and they can’t fix this if they don’t save all four sages. And so Shadow ends up on a quest to save them all with Zelda’s help.
• They discover that the sages are being trapped in their respective temples and in the surrounding area there’s a natural disaster waiting to happen caused by Ganon that they have to constantly use their power to try and hold back which drains them the longer Shadow and Zelda take to save them.
• Green is in the Tower of Winds which is currently surrounded by storms, and Green is doing his best to keep it contained and away from other parts of Hyrule.
• Red is stuck in the Fire Temple which is inside an active volcano and is trying to keep said volcano from erupting and destroying the surrounding towns.
• Blue is inside the Water Temple which has been frozen over and he’s trying to keep a blizzard from destroying nearby civilizations like Zora’s Domain and such.
• Vio is inside the Earth Temple which is deep underground and he’s trying to keep a devastating earthquake from happening.
• When Shadow and Zelda enter each of the temples they hear the voices of the respective sage that guides them and helps them out when they’re in a pinch, but because their powers are slowly being drained each one takes longer to be able to communicate and help out.
• The order they’re saved in is Green, Red, Blue and Vio. As they’re saved they join the party!
• When they enter the Tower of Winds Green almost immediately talks to them, helping by keeping a wind barrier around the tower so the storm won’t knock them off.
• When they enter the Fire Temple Red takes a bit longer to communicate, but still rather early on, and he helps by turning off fire traps and moving lava away so they can get through certain places.
• When they reach the Water Temple they make it almost half way through before Blue is able to communicate and help out by raising and lowering the water level in places that aren’t frozen over
• Before they can reach the Earth Temple however something happens. Ganon doesn’t like how close they are to rescuing the fourth sage so he springs his plan:
• Ganon separates Shadow from the others, luring him into a trap until he’s surrounded by darkness. Shadow pulls out his sword and tells Ganon to face him, to give Vio back! And Ganon just hums and says he’s an odd hero, unlike all the others before him he can sense darkness in him, are there any dark desires he’s hiding from the others? Something he wants that he can’t say? Shadow tells him to shut up, he doesn’t know anything about him! But Ganon says he does, he can sense it, has seen it.
• Right then Vio appears before Shadow, his eyes a deep wine color, as if his usual lavender has been dipped in red, and Vio smiles and reaches out for him, wrapping his arms around Shadow and holding him close, saying how he’s missed him. Shadow is taken aback by it, the hand not holding his sword wrapping around Vio despite his confusion.
• Ganon laughs, how easy it is to tell that he’s not the hero the Princess and the sages think he is, all he wants is to take his beloved and whisk him away, Hyrule’s fate be damned! Shadow growls and says that’s not true, he– but a hand on his cheek stops him, and he takes his eyes away from the darkness to look at Vio, who’s still smiling, he tells Shadow its ok, all he wants is for them to be together too, he doesn’t have to do all of this, he owes Hyrule nothing.
• Shadow flounders, but he manages to push Vio away and say Vio would never say that, Vio would want him to do the right thing! However from behind him he feels arms wrap around his chest, Vio’s head resting on his shoulder in such an intimate manner that it leaves Shadow breathless.
• Shadow feels cold all over despite how warm Vio’s touch should feel, and a fog settles over his mind. He hears many voices at once, Ganon’s, Vio’s, his parents, Zelda’s, the other sages, and they all tell him to be honest with himself, they’ll listen. And Shadow grits his teeth, because fine he hates the gods! Hates how when his parents died he was always told it was the god’s will and he’d understand one day! And then when he met Vio and finally had someone to trust and love the gods just had to stake their claim on him too just to mock him! Ha hates them!
• Vio’s voice in his ears says that’s right, that’s why he should give up this endeavor, when Ganon rules Hyrule he’ll make sure they’re always together, nothing will ever come between them again. All he needs to do is let go of that sword and Vio is all his, simple right?
• Shadow refuses to however, cutting down the impostor and saying he’ll rescue Vio with his own power, he doesn’t need neither the gods nor Ganon’s help!
• Later on when they finally reach the earth temple it takes until they almost reach the boss chamber before Vio is able to help, using vines to keep them all from falling into a pit and apologizing for not helping out more, he’s running out of power, and that makes Shadow worry.
• However once they defeat the boss they find another surprise waiting for them, with Ganon’s image appearing and saying they’re too late, the Earth Sage has succumbed to his curse. As if to prove his point the temple begins to tremble, and they’re forced to escape before they can properly check if Vio is alive or not.
That’s all folks! Will there be a part 2? I don’t know! But still :D
EOW Link and Zelda—LU Master Discussion Post
Well, hello my mutuals and LU Tumblr Community. I've noticed that there's been some strife on people commenting opinions and theories about the newest Legend of Zelda game on other's posts, leading some people to be attacked or even blocked (like myself)
Here is the right place for a civil community-wide discussion, if you wish to have it. If you believe it's actually LU Legend and Fable, I'd like to open up this place to everyone here to openly discuss why or how. I've seen a few comments in that naming poll similarly shot down like mine, so I'd like to try to gather them here in order to keep from clogging up that original post and continuing to bother that creator. If you think that it's not Legend, but another Link, I'd love to hear your theories, any name suggestions and your reasoning behind them (I'm loving Rift right now), how you think he and his Zelda will relate to the rest of the Chain, etc. If any of my moots know of any good analyses already floating around tumblr, I’d love to have them linked or mentioned here so that others can find them. And heck, if you think we should wait until the game comes out to start naming, feel free to say your piece here too. Just a reminder, let’s keep this a fun, supportive place where we can come together, enjoy and discuss one another's theories, and share our appreciation of Nintendo and Jojo’s work together.
From the standpoint of someone who doesn't even like LO that much. Reading through this gave me a strange sense of discomfort? I think. Something about the combination of the essays, and the digs at the author in a lot of posts, and making a community based on it, and the ranting. It made it feel a lot more group ragging on something than normal fandom re-writes. I can't help but want to say something on the subject (0/3)
Gonna respond to all your asks together if that's okay, from what I can glean there's a word limit on mobile (?) so it makes it very interesting to see who's able to put all their thoughts into one big ask vs. who has to cut them up into parts 😆
So I can understand that discomfort, it's actually one that I also initially felt towards the community when I discovered it. Though even more so because when I found out about antiLO being a thing, I was still a MASSIVE fan of LO and my thought was "wow, these people are losers" LOL but then a lot of what they were saying resonated with me more as I realized the story was going nowhere (it was around the trial arc when Eris was revealed to be the 'reason' for Persephone's wrath).
All that said, I don't think I was wrong to feel off back then even though I don't feel that way now. We have our own takes and ways of approaching certain subjects, and how we feel is how we feel.
I will say that I can't, in any way, take credit for 'creating' the community. AntiLO pre-existed me by years and I was simply welcomed in as my opinions of the comic changed. I was a lot more involved in UnpopularLoreOlympus when it was born around the S2 finale of the comic. So... don't give me any sort of credit in 'owning' this community or anything of that sort, I came in during a period when criticism of the comic was becoming more common practice. I'm just also someone who's very verbose and loud in their opinions which appeals to a lot of people in this community, so I get why people might see me as some kind of "pillar" within it or like I'm the loudest person in the room, but I promise you that doesn't mean I have any sort of ownership over this part of the fandom or that I feel my opinions carry any more weight than the people around me. It's just a community, after all, not a religion.
It's true that saying I'm not making money off Rekindled doesn't mean I'm not benefiting off it in other ways. But the 'benefits' are still kinda... nothing? in the grand scheme of things? like okay great I have loads of people reading my stuff every update but like, this is still just Tumblr lmao none of this is real and as soon as Rekindled is over, I might be lucky to bring some of the readers over into my next project, but I doubt whatever I do next will get as popular as Rekindled was. All the "benefits" I get are virtually the same as what people writing fanfiction get on AO3 get or what people doing redraw videos on Youtube get. It's fake Internet points for making fan creations.
And that's okay, because that's sorta just the nature of fandom in general, throughout any niche community. People will be naturally drawn to what's familiar and what I do here appeals to the people who are familiar with LO and the criticisms of it, often people who agree with those criticisms. The Zelda community has LinkedUniverse, Pokemon has Hanamusa, Attack on Titan has communities that are dedicated to loving the anime, hating the anime, and even dunking on people who don't 'get' the anime, Undertale has every single crazy rewrite and rewrites-of-rewrites that have been spawned from its fanbase. Did you know there's an entire community of people who discuss and argue over fire alarms? I didn't, but when I found out about it, it was after listening to a video on Youtube discussing all the interconnected drama of the fire alarm community. Like that's wild and seems so stupid and pointless... but it matters to the people who are in it, and my opinion of how they operate isn't going to change how it makes them feel to be a part of that space. That's kinda just human nature, we create our own little microcosms of things to bond over so for people within those microcosms, any amount of disagreement or discomfort will feel massive in proportion.
I guess the point of what I'm trying to say is that a lot of this stuff feels crazy loud but it's really only that loud because it's occupying a single room.
The reality is that Rekindled is still a very niche project dedicated to a niche webtoon that's a part of a niche medium. As loud as it is within here, it's still only because it's such a closed community. Anyone outside of the Webtoons community has zero clue what it is. The 'attention' that I'm getting is still from other niche people who occupy a very specific interest.
And that's not even exclusive to Rekindled, despite Webtoons attempts to sell LO as a 'worldwide phenomenon', a lot of people don't know it exists and couldn't care less. Does that mean my rantings about the comic and its creator matter any less to me or the people who are interested in them? Not really. Is it all pointless? Maybe, but not everything really needs to have some bigger point. We're all kinda just here spending time talking about something we both love and can't stand. What I say about LO and do with Rekindled is undoubtedly inconsequential and pointless to people who aren't in the room. That's fine. That's why I keep it all in my own house. There are definitely people who talk about it outside of the home but that's far from what I can control.
That said, I think LO also does fall into a very unique category where it's very easy to do rewrites and redraws of it simply because it, in and of itself, is a rewrite. Rekindled is far from being the first "fix it" fic, not only of LO but also of any piece of media in general, it's not really a new phenomenon (but again, when it's loud, it can be easy to go "well clearly YOU had to influence this"). People are drawn to retelling LO or 'fixing' it because LO is based on Greek myth. If it weren't for that, no, I don't think people would be as interested in doing so. It's because we literally have a solid foundation of reference material - the myths and original poems - that we can go "hey, why did LO do this? it should have / could have been xyz". You can't really do that as much with a purely original work besides wish fulfillment of "what if xyz happened" because whatever an original piece of work winds up being is clearly what it was meant to be. We have nothing to compare it against.
But with LO, we know what it could have been because we know what it was trying to be since day 1 - a retelling of the Abduction of Persephone. That's not to say we always knew exactly what Rachel was planning on doing with it, but it's not hard to be disappointed when we see certain mythical stories being established in LO - such as the tale of Eros and Psyche, the Titanomachy, etc. - only to see them get dropped or completely mishandled.
On the one hand I could use HADES and Stray Gods as examples of popular media that don't get 'rewritten' the same way LO does because while they have their own unique interpretations of the myths they're based on, they still feel like properly thought out stories that appreciate the source material. LO, by comparison, feels like it's written by someone who hates Greek myth.
But on the other hand, those rewrites may absolutely exist and I'm just not aware of them because I don't occupy those rooms! The world is only as big as we perceive it to be.
That said, it's always sort of ironic to me when people say Rekindled is "riding off the coattails of LO" because while I can understand their sentiment - because obviously it's a direct re-creation of LO - that opinion seems to operating from the assumption that LO was ever not riding off Greek myth's coattails to begin with.
And no, I don't think my criticizing of LO on an LO-focused blog should in any way be conflated with "media isn't allowed to be bad". I've said this before and I'll say it again, I'm into loads of bad media. I'm also fully capable of enjoying a piece of media but also shit-talking it without actually feeling any sort of vitriol towards it. House M.D. is one of my favorite TV shows but goddamn some of the plots are just so dramatic and out-of-this-world that you can't help but laugh at them (and that's why we have spaces like /r/okaybuddyvicodin LOL). One of my favorite games growing up was Starfox Adventures because I had never played the original Starfox games but I had played loads of Zelda and Adventures was basically Zelda but with Starfox, and I know there are plenty of people who will go "but puff, that game is ass!" and I know! But I love it regardless.
With LO, it's not a matter of "bad media shouldn't exist!" it's a matter of observing what makes it so bad and why that's had a negative impact on both the audience it attracts (primarily teenagers and children) as well as the culture it's taking its ideas from. If LO was just some "so bad its good" webtoon that was easy to enjoy but also poke fun at, I would have zero issue. It's the fact that it's blatantly problematic in its writing and intentions but still hailed as the #1 webtoon on the platform (webtoons in and of themselves being a medium that I've lived in for over a decade so it's virtually impossible to get away from whatever is influencing the culture as a whole) while winning all these accolades for being "brilliantly written" and its creator is given a voice over Greek culture when she herself is not Greek or even well-read on Greek culture in any capacity - that's the issue and why I've spent so much time talking about LO. And if it wasn't me, it would be anyone else, because the problem has been around for ages and people have been trying to get the word out about it for years.
I don't necessarily think every 'fix it fic' is built equally. I think it's a case by case thing. A lot of people are deadass just doing it for fun and to be a part of a community, and I think that's wonderful. There are also people who try to do this but ultimately disrespect whatever the creator was going for by somehow implying that their own original ideas were inferior just by existing, or using their fix-it fics as a way to deliberately harass the original creators (ex. whatever the fuck 'art lore' is on TikTok, based on what I've seen it seems purely made for bullying budding artists and talking shit which is... gross af, but I don't think it's anywhere near the same as readers of LO calling out its highly successful award-winning creator for having zero clue what she's doing with her comic lmao). I don't think a blanket statement of "fix it fics are bad" accomplishes anything because it depends on a variety of factors like the person's intentions and what they're trying to accomplish. Many fanfictions in general could be called 'fix it fics' even if the creator 100% loved the source material with zero issue - because they're still saying "what if xyz happened instead"?
Me, personally? I'm someone who loves Greek myth and who used to adore LO. I was very discouraged and upset when I saw it turned into what it became, and I wanted to try my own hand at creating something new out of the rubble that could give me closure. It's what I choose to do with my time and other people seem to enjoy it as well. I'm sure there's loads to criticize and speculate on regarding my 'intentions' in creating it, but at the end of the day I'm sorta just doing what I want to do with my time because I have a lot of thoughts and ideas I need to get out of my head and many of them are thoughts and ideas that other people like reading about.
If you feel uncomfortable by the amount I talk about it here and the way I talk about it, that's fine. Those are your feelings. There are loads of other antiLO-themed blogs to read that might not give you that same vibe. Even I have certain icks towards certain opinions within the antiLO community, I've seen some people be genuinely shitty and I'm sure that's ironic to hear considering you're describing your own discomfort towards my stuff, but we all have different tolerances towards different things at the end of the day.
I do my part to keep things in my own house of a neighborhood that's really small in the grand scheme of things. It just feels like a big neighborhood if you don't travel. There will inevitably come a day where I'll pack my boxes and move elsewhere, talk about new things and write essays about other topics. That's obviously not today but I definitely don't want this to just be like, my entire identity or the rest of my life LOL it's just something I've chosen to spend my free time doing and I'm content with that. Maybe a year from now I'll feel differently, who knows? At the very least I'm hoping to one day finish Rekindled because no, I don't want this to actually be my identity for the rest of my life, change is a good thing LOL but what that change will bring is, for now, a mystery. Here's hoping wherever I end up at least brings its own uniquely good times like I've had here :' )
Sorry, that was a very long response with a lot of sorta aimless muddling over the topic at hand, but thank you for the opportunity to discuss it regardless ! because I do think it's important to find that 'grounding point' when it comes to stuff like this. because as much as I get riled up over LO, yeah, at the end of the day, it's just a dumb webtoon and I don't wanna go soiling myself over it LOL but I'm also just like... running a Tumblr blog with my personal thoughts and ideas, no more or no less. Even the "attention" I get is still only 200-400 notes per new episode of Rekindled, which pales in comparison to any real metrics of "success" imo LMAO again, it just feels loud because this is a niche community made up of a lot of the same names and faces; step outside of it and no one gives a shit LOL
