【About horsehair skirt (马尾裙) petticoat】

A horsehair petticoat (马尾裙) is a petticoat that is worn under the skirt to give it a puffy appearance. This kind of petticoat came from Korea Joseon at that time.

❗ However, it would be wrong to say that the entire outfit above is Korean origin as someone claim.

In Ming Dynasty record "寓圃杂记/Yu Pu Notes" By Wang Kai王锜 emphasizes that this style of clothing  (马尾裙horsehair petticoat) is a kind of ominously strange clothing , which is what the ancients called "服妖(A derogatory term that describes people wearing weird clothing is bad symbol)". It is only popular among rich and uneducated people, and will let decent people look down on, the original words are " 然系此者惟粗俗官员、暴富子弟而已，士夫甚鄙之，近服妖也 "

Horsehair petticoats are popular in Beijing. Demand was low at first, and local production was impossible and unnecessary. They are all imported from Korea Joseon. When it becomes popular, even men like to wear horsehair petticoats under their robes, and the demand and market will naturally increase, so localized production began. But the number of horses is limited, and the most important raw material, horse hair, is not easy to obtain.

So some people went to the army camp to steal the horse hair of the army horse, which made the army horse look thin and bad.

❗In the Early Emperor Hongzhi era,the officials reported these incident to the Emperor Hongzhi(1470-1505)of the Ming Dynasty said”京中士人好著马尾衬裙，因此官马被人偷拔鬃尾，有误军国大计。乞要禁革”Saying that such behavior is not good for the country and suggest to ban horsehair petticoat. So Emperor Hongzhi make an order to banned people wearing Horsehair petticoats

Since then, this horsehair petticoat gradually disappeared from China history 

❗ It is worth mentioning that even in the period when horsehair petticoats were popular, not everyone wore horsehair petticoats, as shown in the book "释氏源流应化事迹" in the Chenghua era of Ming Dynasty (AD 1465-1487): ( Women that not wear horsehair petticoats)

Cultural History

Pre-Columbian Civilizations (250-900 A.D.): This era of time has an important role in modern Mexican values because for centuries these civilizations were seen as something to destroy and now, they can be celebrated. Many Mexicans with Mayan ancestry take pride in that “Mayans had the only fully developed language of the pre-Columbian cultures… produced spectacular art, as well as sophisticated mathematical and astronomical systems” (Pre-Columbian). Current-day Mexicans also take pride in having Aztec ancestry as they were arguably the most powerful indigenous civilization, controlling most of central Mexico until Spain invaded (Pre-Columbian Mexico). There are even research articles studying how ethnic pride can act as a psychological resource against adversity and provide a sense of belonging when adolescents experience change (National Library of Medicine).

Spaniard Hernan Cortes arrived in 1519 & conquers Aztecs in 1521: Spaniards came intending to colonize, enslave, and rape women. They did so which is the reason why Mexicans vary in skin tone. The colonizers also unknowingly brought with them the promise of generational white supremacy which appears in modern Mexico every day. In Mexico, your skin tone can affect job opportunities, the availability of resources, and your education (Colorism in Mexico). When the races of African slaves, native Aztecs, and colonizing Spaniards collided, it created a caste system with whites on top and blacks at the bottom. This system exists today but is not openly acknowledged. I hope one day this diversity brings celebration instead of pain.

Mexican Revolution (1910-1920): The Mexican Revolution was the first of many modern wars. In terms of values, this civil war started with the belief that “La tierra es para el que la trabaja” (“The land is for those who work it”) (Mexican Revolution). This motto is still representative of Mexico’s beliefs. It also led to a new constitution that involved the separation of church and state. It enhanced Mexico’s collectivistic values and at the same time set them up for involvement in World Wars which in turn increased industrialism, politics, and crime to the level that we see it today.

note: well, yes, the eternals do not have a family by blood. but, they do have a family by heart.

the first time druig met you was on the domo, where you all first woke up. after you opened your eyes, you saw 10 new faces. you notice that you appear to be a little bit older than the red hair one, however, you are younger than most of the team.

druig noticed that you were rather quiet than most of the eternals. you would often sit alone somewhere in the domo, waiting for someone to find you. sometimes, you think so loudly, he could even hear your thoughts.

he was also rather fond of you because you are not a pain in the ass like sprite.

“my sweet, sweet, y/n,” druig smirked around the corner.

“druig- how did you find me?”

“your thoughts are so loud, forgive me for my curiosity.”

“hey! you do not have the permission to read my mind.” the two eternals laughed as druig slid down to sit next to you.

the first time you fight together was back in 5000 years before b.c. druig could manipulate and control the minds of humans. you could manipulate matters. you could make anything move, change the state of matter, enlarge, make it small. you are the other eternals that could also fly.

your power is a deadly match with sersi’s, which is why you often fight with her. however, druig always still looks out for you on the battlefield.

“y/n!! Watch Out!” druig threw a piece of rock towards you. sersi manipulated the rock into scalding lava, and you hurled it to the deviant.

“thanks for the rock,” you smiled shortly before turning around to fight another monster. how unnoticed of you to see druig swearing to himself to protect you forever. “not to be dramatic, but whoever lays a hand on you, unwillingly, will probably die.”

you would often tease druig for getting close with makkari. druig is always happy that you are happy for him, unlike how he notices sprite with ikaris.

you know what, you are the matchmaker for the two. like their beloved little cupid for the couple.

“y/n, what should I get for makkari?” druig asked you as you both strolled down the ancient Greek street.

“come on’ druig, you know she wants that emerald plate for a long time,” you obviously point out the shop.

you felt a tap on your shoulder as you turned around to see makkari. “y/n, do you think druig likes this dress or this dress?” makkari signed to you.

“makkari druig has always wanted to see you in that sequin dress, go for it,” you smiled brightly. “and Oh- come and take my jewelry I got it from rome,” you winked as you ran towards your room.

tenochtitlan 1521 a.d.

druig wished to stop the human conflict, but ikaris prevented him. you could feel his anger and sadness radiates from him. oh you could feel his will to punch ikaris straight in the face.

druig’s eyes radiate and glow once more, and he turned to look at makkari and you.

“my sweet, sweet, y/n, join me,” druig’s voice echoed in your mind.

“no- no druig, please, don’t do it, don’t go,” you thought as so many words you wanted to say crashed together.

“come with me, we can stop this,” druig persuaded you and makkari. makkari embraced you, even though you could feel her pain as well.

“please don’t bring her into this,” makkari signed to druig as her tears fell. you two can see druig’s gazes, yet they don’t radiate love anymore.

you tried to scream, but your voice does not function. he walked down the stairs while the people dropped her weapons and follow him.

makkari embraced you tighter as she cried as well. ajak saw the two broken eternals; wished she could heal heart wound.

druig pushed the burning sensation in his heart aside and walked into the forest; leaving his two most important people on this planet.

present time

sersi, sprite, ikaris, kingo, and phastos came to look for you. after the group is disassembled, you withdrew to a small cottage in the mountains.

surprised, you opened the door and saw 5 eternals at your door. sersi embraced you tightly.

“ajak is no longer with us,” sersi gasped as she tried to convey the message.

“let’s go find your brother,” ikaris said.

“i have no brother.”

“you definitely know who I am talking about,” he replied.

so that, you hop on the plane, to go find druig. on the plane, sersi took a couple of selfies with you and decided to tag your instagram.

“look at her, she's a bunny now,” sersi laughed.

“well, maybe, it's because you are using the bunny filter,” sprite acknowledged.

“look at ikaris, he looks like a grandpa,” sersi snapped the picture.

sprite always gives you side-eyes since you were sitting between sersi and ikaris. you decided to move and sat near the back and further away from everyone.

then you were attacked by kingo about promoting his movies. *rolled eyes*

Amazon forest, present time

the forest was extremely humid and full of insects. you flew up from the group until you saw a small village. so you touched down, unwanted to scare the villagers.

a small girl ran up to you and tugged your shirt, her eyes are glowing gold. she handed you a red flower.

“my sweet y/n? you haven't changed,” the girl smiled.

“druig, let the poor girl go, come and find us so we could talk,” you crouched down and wiped the girl’s hair away from her face.

“the compound is in the middle of the village,” the girl gasped. “who are you? druig will find you! run away!” she fidgeted with her fingers.

“it’s alright, he won’t be mad at you.” “now, go back to your parents.”

ikaris opened the compound’s door as you see druig standing in the front. you rushed past the chairs and embraced him.

“my sweet, sweet, y/n, i missed you,” druig said to your hair.

“I missed you too, now, never leave us like that again!” you hit his arms. “makkari and i are both hurt!” “you better make up to her for your lost time.”

“ow” he rubbed his arm. “yes, I would never,” he hugged you again.

“now, what do y'all want from me?” he turned to the rest of the team.

druig was pretty pissed off by the news he received. he just reunited with his “sister” and, now, everyone has to go back and fight the deviants.

as they finished fighting the deviants and are on their way to the underground domo, druig was very attached to you. on the car he would sit next to you, so he can listen to you talking about social media and Instagram.

he would not lie, but how much he looks at you, he still sees the innocent girl who is sitting alone in the domo’s hallway. he could still remember your first conversation together, about the blue and green planet.

druig recovered his consciousness again when he felt you rest your head on his shoulder. smiling a bit, he took a selfie with you on your phone and hope for you to see it later. at the same time, kingo was about to snap a shot, he sent a daring glare.

“no one can tease her accept me.” he raised his eyebrows.

*time skips. first end credit*

everything seems back to normal right now. (is it?) you, makkari, druig, and thena boarded the domo and flew across the galaxy.

makkari keeps speed reading her pile of books and druig keeps eating and eating. you just decided to borrow makkari’s books to cure your boredom. you just might as well, have a book club with her to this point.

you guys are still waiting for the news from your friend; however, it seems like they are not responding.

just as you guys are discussing, a light lit up in the hallway. someone fell down from the portal. he- it seems pretty sober and drunk.

druig immediately stood up in front of you and makkari. thena summoned her sword and shield.

“babababanamamaam, behold, the royal prince of titan, brother of thanos, the knave of hearts, defeater of black roger.” Pip burped.

“who are you?” thena questioned.

“I am eros,” he smiled. “pleasure to meet you all.” he reached out to place his lips on makkari’s hands and yours.

druig never wanted to punch someone in the face this hard before. eros gave him a cheeky smile.

druig sends a message in your brain to get far away from Eros. you send him a cheeky look.

“your friend is in big trouble,” he smiled.

- Arrival of Eternals on Earth

575 BC Babylon

- 4 425 years has passed since the Eternals arrival on earth.

- Ajak reports to Arishem about their progress in eliminating the Deviants on Earth

- Ajak tells Ikaris he is allowed to live a life and tell Sersi how he felt.

539 BC Babylon

- Ikaris is told the truth of the mission by Ajak

(The Babylon empire dissolved in 539 BC, it can be assumed this is when they left to pursue roaming Deviants)

400 AD Gupta Empire

- 9 centuries has passed since Babylon, Sersi and Ikaris are shown getting married in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.

1521 AD Tenochtitlan

- The Eternals has been on earth for around 6, 521 years.

- The Deviant numbers has dwindled to the point that the fighters are hunting down the last of them.

(Note: Phastos said whilst in Tenochtitlan that after the others kill the Deviants they were sent after, they would have eliminated them all from the planet.)

- Still in Tenochtitlan, after confirming all the Deviants are gone, Ajak makes the decision to split up the team as they have no active role anymore.

- The Eternal Trio goes to Ajak's house in the South Dakota and finds their leader's dead body

4/3 days before the Emergence

- The trio reunite with Kingo whilst he is in a set shooting for his upcoming movie.

- They fly a private jet to Australia to meet with Thena and Gilgamesh

3/2 days before the Emergence

- The 6 reunited Eternals goes to Druig's village, hidden in the Amazons.

- Sersi and Ikaris goes to Chicago to recruit the Eternal Technopath, Phastos.

1 day before the Emergence

- the remaining Eternals converge in their ship, Domo where they plan their next moves.

The day of the Emergence

- This is when the Final battle takes place.

2 weeks after the Emergence

- Thena, Druig and Makkari leave Earth to seek out other Eternals.

Unknown time after the Emergence

- Arishem arrives on Earth and calls to him the remaining Eternals. He takes them and disappear into the void of space.

The Ikersi Timeline

- Sersi says she and Ikaris were together for 5 000 years to Dane. We know they got married in 400 A.D and that they were hovering around each other since 575 B.C. In the movie, Dane tells Sersi that he was told by Sprite that Sersi broke up with her boyfriend (Ikaris) over a century before present day. This would mean that Ikaris left Sersi around early 20th century or the 1900s.

In total, the Ikersi couple had

- 3 Millenium and 8 centuries of Courtship (3 400 B.C to 400 A.D)

- 1 millenium and 2 centuries of Marriage (400 A.D to 1900 A.D.)

- And a century of separation (1900 A.D to 2024 A.D)

[1900 A.D is an approximate as the exact date for Ikaris leaving Sersi is not mentioned anywhere else in the movie.]

- Ajak has a small country cottage in South Dakota

The Mexican people have varied origins and an identity that has evolved with the succession of conquests among Amerindian groups and later by Europeans. The area that is now modern-day Mexico has cradled many predecessor civilizations, going back as far as the Olmec which influenced the latter civilizations of Teotihuacan (200 B.C. to 700 A.D.) and the much debated Toltec people who flourished around the 10th and 12th centuries A.D., and ending with the last great indigenous civilization before the Spanish Conquest, the Aztecs (13 March 1325 to 13 August 1521). The Nahuatl language was a common tongue in the region of modern Central Mexico during the Aztec Empire, but after the arrival of Europeans the common language of the region became Spanish.

After the conquest of the Aztec empire, the Spanish re-administered the land and expanded their own empire beyond the former boundaries of the Aztec, adding more territory to the Mexican sphere of influence which remained under the Spanish Crown for 300 years. Cultural diffusion and intermixing among the Amerindian populations with the European created the modern Mexican identity which is a mixture of regional indigenous and European cultures that evolved into a national culture during the Spanish period. This new identity was defined as "Mexican" shortly after the Mexican War of Independence and was more invigorated and developed after the Mexican Revolution when the Constitution of 1917 officially established Mexico as an indivisible pluricultural nation founded on its indigenous roots

Mexicano (Mexican) is derived from the word Mexico itself. In the principal model to create demonyms in Spanish, the suffix -ano is added to the name of the place of origin. However, in Nahuatl language the original demonym becomes Mexica.

It has been suggested that the name of the country is derived from Mextli or Mēxihtli, a secret name for the god of war and patron of the Mexicas, Huitzilopochtli, in which case Mēxihco means "Place where Huitzilopochtli lives".Another hypothesis suggests that Mēxihco derives from the Nahuatl words for "Moon" (Mētztli) and navel (xīctli). Thousands of Years Apart Prologue

Tenochtitlan -1521 A.D

The humans were fighting one another yet again. It seemed to be the same old story every decade or so. There were multiple fires burning in the city and the Eternals were fighting a group of Deviants nearby. There had been more Deviants than expected, so the eleven Eternals had to split up. Aspen was in the process of putting out the fires in Tenochtitlan when Makkari approached her.

*We're meeting with the others.* Makkari signs.

The brunette haired girl lowered her arms from their outstretched position.

*Okay, I'll be right there. Let me finish up here and I'll be right behind you.* she signs back.

Makkari gives the girl a nod before running off. Aspen returned to putting out as many fires as she could before deciding to take a break to meet up with the others. She makes her way into the nearby woods and manages to catch up to Makkari and Thena.

"Where are the others?" Ajak wonders.

*We had to separate.* Makkari signed.

"There were more Deviants than you said," Thena tells them.

"I bet that was a lot of fun for you," Phastos remarked.

"It was," Thena agreed.

Phastos then pulled up his world hologram and looks at the little blue glowing dot. "Once the others kill these last Deviants, we will have eliminated them all from the planet." he reports.

Their attention was suddenly drawn to the fighting humans that were making their way through the woods just a few feet away from the Eternals. Druig's eyes started to glow, ready to stop the humans from fighting.

"Don't," Ajak warned.

Druig's eyes returned to their natural color as Ajak continued.

"We don't interfere in their wars." she reminds him.

"This isn't war, it's genocide." Druig tells her. "Their weapons have become too deadly."

He turns his attention to the inventor Eternal, "Maybe it wasn't such a good idea helping them advance, Phastos."

"Technology is a part of their evolutionary process, Druig." he tells him. "It's not exactly something I can stop."

"No you can't, but I can." Druig retorted.

*Stay strong* Makkari signed to him.

"It's too late," Thena says.

The others turn their heads to the blonde.

"Thena?" Sersi calls.

"Everyone is going to die." Thena mentions, then her eyes go white.

"Are you okay?" Sersi wonders.

A fight broke out then, amongst the Eternals. Everyone attempted to defend themselves against Thena, without hurting their friend.

The Eternals were eventually able to subdue their friend and had taken her to the temple in the city. They stood by as they waited for Thena to awake.

"I thought Mahd Wr'ry was a myth." Sersi said.

Ajak was in the process of healing Phastos, who replied to the woman in green.

"There is no cure. So no one really talks about it."

Thena woke up just as he finished speaking. "What happened?" she wonders.

"Thena, you attacked everyone. Wounded Sersi, Phastos. You nearly killed Makkari and Aspen." Ajak tells her.

The blonde Eternal sat up, looking around at her fellow Eternals. "I don't remember."

"You have Mahd Wr'ry. Your mind is fracturing under the weight of your memories and all I can do is erase you so that you can start over. I will have to inform Arishem, and take you back to the ship where we have the technology to help." Ajak says.

*But, it won't be Thena anymore.* Makkari mentions.

"What if it happens again? She could have killed you, she could have killed all of us." Kingo stated.

"Please, I want to remember. I want to remember my life." Thena argued.

"Thena, I love you. But listen to me, it's not important that you remember or not. Your spirit will remain. You will always be Thena deep inside. Trust me." Ajak tells her.

"Why should she trust you?" Druig spoke up.

Everyone turns their attention to him.

"You are asking her to let you erase who she is." Druig points out.

"Druig, I know you're upset." Ajak started.

"Upset?!" Druig interrupted. "We have trusted you for seven thousand years, and look where you've gotten us. I've watched humans destroy each other when I could stop it all in a heartbeat. Do you know what that does to a person after centuries?" he asks her, tears rolling down his cheeks.

"Could our mission have been a mistake? Are we really helping these people build a better world, huh?" he asks the others.

He then turns and makes his way to the entryway of the temple, watching the humans continuing to fight below.

"I am just like the soldiers down there. Pawns to their leaders. Blinded by loyalty." he remarks. "It ends now."

His eyes glow golden and the humans slowly stop fighting each other one by one, thanks to Druig in their heads. Ikaris approached him and grabbed Druig by the shoulder before pushing him into the wall behind him.

"Let them go." Ikaris demands.

"You are gonna have to make me." Druig tells him.

"Stop," Ajak intervenes.

Ikaris looks at her before backing off. Druig turns to her then.

"If you want to stop me, you are gonna have to kill me." he tells her.

When Ajak said nothing in response, Druig turned and began walking down the steps of temple. Aspen looked at the others in that moment before running after him.

"Druig. Druig, wait!" she called out.

She ran down the steps behind him and reached out to grab his upper arm. He stops when he felt her hand wrap around his bicep then turns to her.

"Druig, please don't leave." she begs him.

"I can't stay, not any longer. I can't just stand by and watch the humans continue to harm one another for any more centuries." he tells her.

"Then I'll come with you," Aspen says.

Druig chuckles quietly. "No my darling Aspen, you can't come with me. You belong here with the others."

"Please...please don't leave me." she pleads.

Druig lifted his left hand and placed it on Aspen's right cheek. His thumb gently rubbed her ivory skin, his blue eyes gazing into her brown ones.

"I'm so sorry, Aspen. But, I really can't stay." he tells her softly.

He gently pulls his arm out of her grasp and gives her a small smile before turning and continuing down the stairs. The humans parted to let Druig through before following behind him. Aspen stood there on the steps, tears in her eyes as she watched Druig walk away from her and the others. Makkari eventually makes her way down the steps of the temple and stands beside Aspen.

*It's gonna be okay.* she signs in reassurance before hugging the girl.

Aspen returned the hug and cried into the brunette's shoulder. How could he walk away from the Eternals? From her? From...them?

North America -1815

The remaining Eternals had found themselves in North America some centuries later. Aspen, however, had grown tired of being around the others, aside from Makkari. She was ready for a change away from the others. The brunette made her way through the halls of the Domo, looking for Makkari. The ship was vast, with many rooms for eleven residents but, the brown eyed woman found her girlfriend sitting in Phastos' workshop, a few items spread out throughout the room.

*Hey Makkari, I wanted to talk to you.* she signed to her girlfriend after getting her attention.

*What is it, Aspen?* Makkari wondered.

Aspen sighed, *I have grown tired of being around the others, I'm ready for a change. I don't know how long I plan to be away, I just want to take some time to explore on my own. I promise to come back one day.*

Makkari frowned, saddened by her girlfriend’s decision but, overall understood her decision.

*Okay. You be safe out there, and remember...no interfering.* she signs.

Aspen gives her girlfriend a nod before embracing her. When the two pull away, the brunette placed a kiss on Makkari's cheek before turning and walking away from her girlfriend, which was the hardest thing she had to do. The woman made her way through the Domo to the exit and walked away from the ship once she was outside. She wasn't sure where to go first but, she wanted to check out New Orleans so that's where she was going to head first.

Notes on the earliest years of Xiang’s existence; I’m altering his age a bit, shaving off about 200 years. 

He was known as simply Jialong, and he was born around 25 A.D, which is the earliest date possible based on a tomb excavated that held artifacts suggesting booming salt production, and is likely a period when the first Han Chinese people settled there (note: Xiang himself is a representation of Han Chinese people in Hong Kong)

This is a change from his previous headcanon he was born under the Qin dynasty in 214 B.C., but now it’s the Eastern Han dynasty. He comes after the collapse of Nanyue, (specifically Nanhai) and the Yue people. 

Jialong was specifically from Lantau Island, and most likely worked and lived among salt miners until he was found by the representative for China. Even then, however, the people on Lantau island often rioted against the government as far back as the Tang dynasty, so he’s been trouble for the mainland since the beginning. 

Most of Hong Kong’s money until well into the 1500s and arguably until Britain came into the picture came from salt production, fishing, and pearl trades.

I’d like to think he wasn’t taken in by China until about 1075, when the first schools began to open in the territory to teach Imperial Chinese education, which he was absolutely forced to undergo. 

Jialong met Yeung Leung-jit (referred to as Hau Wong) sometime around 1276. In verses where Yao Wang is not the default China, Jialong chose his surname from this. Hau Wong is still worshipped and celebrated in Hong Kong to this day. 

Jialong physically grew to be a teenager during the Yuan dynasty (starting in 1271, though his growth didnt start most likely until the 1300s) when the five great families (Tang/Deng, Liu/Liao, Hau/Hou, Pang/Peng, and Man/Wen) settled the area. 

His first instance of European contact was the Portugese in the 16th century (specifically in 1513 by Jorge Álvares), who set up the colony of Tamao. The exact area of the colony is unknown, but it is largely agreed to be in Hong Kong, and this was the first European settlement in Asia. It only lasted until 1521, when they were chased out by the Ming dynasty’s fleet. That small amont of time, however, was all the Portugese needed to learn about the area, and in turn take Macau and prosper there. 

Jialong also began really rebelling against the mainland, and often helping to hide pirates, and even personally got to know a few, though still weary and cautious of them, and may have resided in a walled village for a time due to a bad personal mishap with one.

During the Qing dynasty was the Great Clearance, which is the first time Jialong came close to dying as a personification. It was during this time as well Jialong came to know the Hakka people, and learned to speak their dialect and make their cuisine (I like to think the rep for Kowloon peninsula is Hakka Chinese).

For us to be able to know personally the person or things, we should first ask or know their names because it signifies their identity. The name that we have in our birth certificate also has history on it. We often question where were names came from. It is because somehow because of its history we can finally know ourselves.

The Philippine's name also has an interesting history. It changes and influences time to time way back in history.

But....

These are the previous names of Philippines before it became the "Philippines" we know today.

In 982 A.D. Chinese traders and geographers already knew the Philippines and they referred this as Ma-yi.

Chau Ju-Kua, a Chinese trade official, gave a detailed account of his travel to various parts of the islands in 1225, which he called Ma-i

In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan named the islands, Islas de San Lazaro (Archipelago of St. Lazarus) when he first set foot on our native soil. After this, many names have been given to the archipelago.

The name Philippines came from the word "Filipinas" given by the Spanish navigator Ruy Lopez de Villalobos in 1543 in honor of Prince Philip of Asturias, who became King Philip II of Spain, successor to King Charles I. The word Felipina was at first given by Villalobos's men to refer to Leyte and Samar. Later, it was given to the whole archipelago.

The name Filipinas first appeared in a rare map published in Venice in 1554 by Giovanni Battista Ramusio, an Italian geographer.

In 1751, Fr. Juan J. Delgado, a Jesuit historian called Manila, Pearl of the Orient since it became a rich outlet of Asian trade even prior to the coming of Spaniards in the archipelago.

Dr. Jose Rizal, the country's foremost hero, gave the name Pearl of the Orient Seas to his native land on the eve of his execution in 1896.

The Spanish Filipinas or Felipinas was later changed to Philippine Islands (P.I.) during American colonial era. It was renamed Republic of the Philippines (R.P.) after the recognition of it independence in 1946.

There were some Filipinos who proposed new names for the Philippines since the name of our country was given by the colonizers. Artemio Ricarte, a Katipunan general, wanted it to be called Rizaline Republic, after Jose Rizal. Former President Ferdinand Marcos proposed the name Maharlika (also the name of his guerilla group in World War II), after his dream of making this nation great again.
