“Hey, you okay?” Your tired eyes peered up at Aaron as he neared your seat on the jet, tie loosened and top button of his shirt undone. He had just gotten off the phone with the section chief, who, undoubtedly, scolded him as if he were a wayward adolescent. Although the smile he offered you in response was tight lipped and less-than-giving, his eyes told a different tale. They softened as they met yours, shedding their cold and hard façade to reveal a weary truth, littered with hints of desperation.
This case had been long and grueling, tensions insurmountably higher than usual with Erin Strauss breathing down Hotch’s neck, scrutinizing every decision he and the rest of the team made. You barely got a chance to talk to Aaron about how he was doing, always being waved off by the older man with “We can talk later,” or “It doesn’t matter right now, let’s focus on the case,”. Begrudgingly, you obliged, understanding there was no point in pushing him. It would only add to his stress. Although the case was solved, the end was arduous. The unsub had taken a hostage and, with the rest of the BAU’s input, the negotiation tactics went a different way than what Erin deemed appropriate.
A heavy sigh parted Aaron’s lips as he slumped into his seat, you could practically see steam of stress billowing off of him. “It’s fine, everything’s fine.” He spoke quietly, eyes closed, but you could tell he didn’t believe it to be true.
“Strauss tear you a new one?” Rossi piqued from across the table.
The unit chief huffed out a short laugh. “Nothing out of the ordinary.” Rossi just nodded at this, turning his attention back to his notepad. Hotch looked to the rest of his team as they settled into their desired spots, “Let’s all get some rest, alright?”
Everyone wordlessly nodded, not having to be told twice.
Aaron lazily turned his head to you with a book in your lap, “You, too, Agent.” He gave you a playfully pointed look.
You breathed out a quiet chuckle, “I will, don’t worry.” You shut the book and turned to give your beloved undivided attention, gazing into his suddenly undecipherable, deep hickory eyes. “You wanna talk about it?”
He gently shook his head, eyelids feeling heavy as his blinks became slower and slower, “At home,” he whispered, your stomach doing a somersault at the notion. Aaron tried to fight sleep for just a few seconds longer, wanting to just stare at you for a bit.
You faced him, head leaned against the headrest, smile so warm and endearing. The way you chuckled at him was like getting a glimpse of heaven. He couldn’t wait to go home and have you all to yourself. The feeling of your arms wrapped around him was his life raft in the tumultuous storm of his emotions. It was hard for him to express what he was feeling all the time, but with you around his walls of reinforced concrete tumbled. Aaron gave you a small, sleepy smile.
Before he could say anything else, you spoke up. “Sleep,” it was a simple command, and the usually stubborn man melted into his seat at your word.
You took a couple minutes longer to watch him immediately fall into a deep slumber, his breaths becoming deeper and longer, lips parted ever-so-slightly, eyebrows twitching here and there. With a breathy laugh, you fought the urge to reach up and caress his face and move the little stray strands of hair off of his forehead, still aware that your coworkers could witness such an intimate moment. The two of you had begun dating five months ago, but it wasn’t until three months later that you broke the news to the team.
It had been a long time coming; for quite a while everyone knew about the feelings you harbored for your boss- even Hotch himself knew. You didn’t do a very good job of hiding it, taking every opportunity you could to blithely flirt with him. Some might just assume you did so in a similar way to how Penelope and Derek toy with each other, but the profilers knew in the back of their minds it wasn’t the case. Aaron fought you at first, pleading with you to stop calling him “handsome”, “big man”, or even “honey” in one case. You never gave in, though, buckling down on your efforts upon seeing the way he would chuckle caught off guard and almost blush in many instances. Slowly yet surely, he gave in to your teases. You burrowed your way into the stoic man’s heart, creating a place you would die before giving up. Aaron didn’t even realize it was happening until his world came crashing down on him one fateful evening.
A routine questioning of a suspect had led to you getting held hostage, the man whose house you went to turning out to be the unsub. This had happened many times before in the history of the BAU, but for some reason Aaron was more on edge. There was no covert entrance into the home and the unsub refused to open up a line of communication with the agents, leaving everyone in the dark wondering what the state of your wellbeing was. Aaron had begun pacing back and forth in the tent they had set up outside the house you were being held in, hands held to his head.
“Hotch, it’s going to be okay.” Derek stepped forward, trying to calm his superior’s nerves.
“He’s right, Aaron.” Rossi piped in. “We’ve dealt with this before, we can fix this.”
“No,” Hotch murmured back, “This isn’t the same. It’s not the same.” His pacing didn’t let up. “This is my fault, I should have told someone to go, too. I could have prevented this.”
The others held unspoken conversations within the glances they shared.
“Hotch-” Emily tried to speak up, to convince him that wasn’t the case.
“NO!” He yelled suddenly, stopping in his tracks. “You don’t understand, I can’t lose them!” His voice was heavy with despair, eyes wide in anguish.
All eyes were trained on him, his coworkers at loss for words at the confession.
“I can’t lose them…” Aaron mumbled this himself before roughly pushing out of the tent.
You smiled to yourself as you took a last glance towards the sleeping man next to you before turning back to your book. Safe to say, you were incredibly shocked when Aaron showed up on your doorstep in the dark of the night all those months ago, soaked in the rain, kissing you with a sense of urgency before you could even ask him what he was doing there. You bit your lip at the memory, but shook it out of your head to try and focus in on the jumbled words swimming in your lap. From the get-go, the two of you decided you would remain extremely professional around your coworkers, and you did just that. You stopped your teasing, for the most part at least, and made sure to never initiate physical contact on the job. Anyone that didn’t already know you were in a relationship would never have guessed. The most you allowed yourselves was sitting next to one another on the jet, just like you were doing now.
An unintelligible murmur and huff sounding from your side drew your short-lived attention away from the delicate pages in front of you. Just as you were about to look over to Aaron and make sure he was okay, a heavy weight thumped onto your shoulder. His head. You were taken aback, a giggle slipping through your lips before you could help it. Your fingers flew up to your mouth, trying to keep yourself quiet as you noticed him shift a bit, making himself more comfortable. Sure, you’d accidentally fallen against Hotch’s shoulder in your sleep a couple times before the two of you entered a relationship, but never in a million years did you expect him to do the same to you. On the jet. In front of everyone. Of course, he couldn’t control his actions in his sleep, you reasoned. And maybe you should gently shrug him off to help retain his authority around the teasing profilers. But, this time, you fought off that thinking and gave in to your instinct. He had been so tense and strung out this entire case, you knew he needed this.
To hell with professionalism. You thought with a devilish grin, happy in your resolution. And so, you gently closed your book and slid it onto the table in front of you, trying your best to move as little as possible before leaning your head against his own and closing your eyes. With the gentle hum of the jet engines and the comforting sounds of Aaron’s breathing, you were lulled into a wonderful slumber in no time.
“Oh my God,” Emily breathed out, garnering the attention of Spencer who rested in the same group of seats as her. He looked up at her with one eye from where he was slumped over in his window seat, trying to get some shut-eye.
“Huh?” the sleepy doctor grumbled, pushing himself a bit more upright when he noticed Emily looking at something on the other side of the jet, her face a mixture of shock and glee.
The raven-haired agent began slapping Derek’s shoulder, who sat peacefully next to her with his eyes closed and headphones over his ears. His eyes flew open, looking over to Emily with annoyance as he took off his headphones, “What! What!”
Immediately Emily shushed him, “Look!” she whispered, hand flying wildly in the air, eyes still unmoving.
Derek followed her line of sight the scene before him pulling a laugh of disbelief from his lungs. “Well, well, well…”
Emily’s hands covered her mouth in astonishment. “JJ!” she whispered over to the blonde who lay curled up on the sofa next to them. “Ugh,” she groaned quietly, unable to wake her coworker.
“I can’t believe this,” she whispered mostly to herself, settling back in her seat, garnering a shake of Morgan’s head.
The view of their hard-headed unit chief sleeping peacefully on the shoulder of his subordinate, the latter’s head resting sweetly back on his was suddenly blacked by the side of Rossi’s body as he stuck his arm out, trying to get the best angle to immortalize this moment on camera.
“Good for them,” Morgan grinned, his voice proudly announcing his amusement as he put his headphones back over his head.
“Rossi, you better send me that!” Emily spoke up just a little bit louder, the old man looking back and motioning his phone towards her in acknowledgement.
“What? What!?” Spencer whisper-yelled, unsuccessfully craning his head above and between the seats to get a glimpse of what all the hubbub was about, “What are you guys looking at!?”
“Penelope’s gonna flip,” Emily mumbled to herself, a teasing smile playing on her face as she looked down at the picture Rossi sent her. Without a second thought, she saved the photo onto her phone. They’re never gonna live this down.

Hey hey hey!
I just realized that every WIP I have and really like, has either...
A Drunk, An insane person, An Assassin, A rejected dishevelled outcast, or A sassy Thief as an Antihero
And they're always my favorite character...
For example, TCOT has three of these: Marril - (Assassin), Geon - (Insanity), Honrul - (Thief)
StF has One, Alkain as the outcast
And you all know where Jak lies on this scale...
Butttttt, My brain had been throwing ideas around recently, so I have a new potential WIP (which also coincidentally follows this format)
Officially to be Temporarily named C4
Now, please tell me if you'd like me to add this to my list of WIPs and work on dumb shit when I'm bored
---------------------------------------------
A story about people from 4 kingdoms. All of the characters are named after nature items but have a nickname that matches a Real life name. Including 4 of the 5 characters above (P.S. Each kingdom is modeled after one of the 4 standard elements)
1. (Thief) MC, Granite Hall [Grant] is a Sassy Thief who Smuggles gemstones from the Earth/Cave-themed kingdom.
2. (Outcast) 100% Disheveled Idgaf guy, Aragonite Hollins [Aaron/Argon] is a random city insider who nobody likes because he's lowkey kind of a bitch - Also from the Earth-themed caves
3. (Insanity) Savanna Fields [Anna] is batshit insane and terrifies her coworker and fellow slave Mesa [Mace] by harassing their masters and earning herself punishment on purpose as a fuck you. Other than that... she's just crazy - From the Fire-themed Mesas
4. (Assassin) Kelp Stryker [Kel] He fucking hates his name, and is a professional Assassin under the Queen of his water-themed kingdom. He is forced to work with a Freelance spy/burglar named Brook Swann

If/when Rob comes back do you want them back at the mill or in the new second flat?
Bonus question: Do you want Rob to kick Cain’s butt as much as I do? (the comparison comment) because i would love for Rob to get some aggression out ;)
Hi!!!!! Thank you so much for your ask!! You have no idea how much I love it!! ❤️
I want Robron in the Big House!
Here's what I want. And I have been dreaming about this aka writing a story in me head for years now.
I want Aaron to focus on his business. Do something with cars, make an honest living. Then he meets an elderly gentleman - kinda like Lawrence but a father figure, as opposed to a lusting, sorry, self-pitying person like him. His son is gay and he couldn't accept it at first, so he doesn't have a relationship with him and his family and very much regrets that.
This gentleman notices Aaron at an automobile show when Aaron nonchalantly solves an issue demonstrating he knows cars. Over a pint he gets to know Aaron and takes a liking to him- kinda like his son. And Aaron also finds a friend with whom he can speak without baggage (of people knowing everything about him). And he can talk cars. This man gives him advice and contacts and Aaron begins to grow his business all the while, this guy is in the background. No one in the village knows about him because it's Aaron's sacred happy place. This gentleman knows about Robert, Aaron's struggles etc.
Actually, speaking with him, gives Aaron the courage to go after what he wants and he finally decides to knock some sense into Robert and bring him home.
****
Robert returns to a very different village and a very different Aaron. While Robert is still struggling to get his bearings, Aaron is a successful businessman and had weirdly (to Robert) wears a suit unironically! And Aaron has put up an offer on the Big House and it gets accepted! This means extending the business to include Emmerdale farm. Aaron did it so that Robert could get a head start and be in his comfort zone. But Robert is not so comfortable. The roles have been reversed now...Aaron is rich, successful and suave and Robert is ...well .... unsettled. Plus, there is this guy Aaron goes out to meet- who is purely business, Aaron has assured him - but no one in the village knows about him!!
What is going on? Is this Aaron taking revenge for all those years he had to put up with Rebecca or .... Robert is conflicted and also struggling with mental health.
Meanwhile Aaron is on cloud 9 thinking, for the first time in his life, he has his love, his work and his life in order! Plus, no one can stop them from having Seb now even with their records. If only Liv was here to see it! He has no idea what is going on in Robert's mind.....
*the story continues with a little bit of angst and Robert being a little bit of pain but it is all resolved amicably and has an adorable happy ending*
And then they move on to the Seb custody SL and then the surrogacy SL.
If I had any say in Emmerdale and had all the power in the world, this would be how it goes! 😂

To your "never watched 2019" anon, please let them know, I will keep them company in the club 😂 Couldn't do it then. Can't do it now. The Vic SL started out strong and initially the Robron SL accompanying it was solid as well. Robert struggling with his guilt of not being able to protect his sister and being "very Robert" about the situation. Aaron challenging Robert on his stance and bringing his own story to make Robert understand, Vic standing here ground, Diane being the confused mediator that she always was, Aaron being a friend to Vic etc. Those early days have us some quite intense and honest to God complex sls that tested Domestic Robron as a couple. And Ryan and Danny were absolutely stupendously brilliant in them. Personally, I rate some of those fight scenes to be equally enjoyable as some of the 2016 SLs. And it was genuinely a welcome relief after the clumsy way in which Emmerdale had decided to resurrect the surrogacy SL. Robron having to make that choice between supporting their sisters or paying for the surrogacy, dividing up their responsibilities and chores showed how the couple had matured into husband|husband from affair era Robron. It was beautiful, deep, very Robron and not entirely badly crafted/written.
Then the news broke. And I remember that it was the first time I knew what the phrase "being hit by a ton of bricks" meant. And it didn't help that the SL kept getting more and more ridiculous. Somehow, the village with Dingles, Sugdens was completely powerless against Lee!!🙆‍♀️Aaron was reduced to being almost a sidekick in some of those fight scenes with Lee, which made no sense, and most scenes were about Robert and Vic and not Robron in the Mill!! If it wasn't for Ryan and Danny's powerful acting in those handful of scenes that focused on Robron... Anyway, I gave up. It hurt too much. And now, all that SL leading up to Robert being incarcerated and Aaron moving on has been put in question by Emmerdale themselves, so I don't need to watch it! 😂🤣 Didn't stop me yelling at the show though. There is a part of me, I think that will always be sad that Robron didn't get their story. Aaron being there for Robert and Robert coping in prison and how they keep the family together for 14 years (or less) is a sl that was made for Robron. They would get through it. I know they would have. They are it for each other. And they know it. I don't care what anybody says.
You're right and you should say it, anon. But honestly, every problem you (and I and everyone with half a brain) had with the shitshow that was the second half of 2019... it's all to blame on this asshole (affectionate)
Tumblr media
So if he could just stop climbing coconut trees and filming capybaras for a bit and come back as Robert, that would be grand!

*Plays infernal gallop* So here are my chaotic thoughts on Stars Crossed Right🤪:
"...Why are you asking about Dex like this?"
Kristina paused, biting the inside of her lip. It wasn't something she could verbalize, nor was it something she could put together in her head. There was something about him, an appeal she liked, but no concrete way to broadcast it.
"Listen to me, Kristina," Sonny spoke up, looking her over, "When it comes to Dex, keep your distance."
Me:
Tumblr media
It's a good business. Mr. Corinthos's beans are our top seller. I'm glad she told you to come out here. How's she doing now?"
"She looks good," Dex mentally kicked himself, "I-I mean, she's doing good."
Me:
Tumblr media
Sidenote: The way Aaron basically was like "Yo be careful she's kinda unpredictable" and Dex was like "....Yo what does that mean??? Like red flag unpredictable??? Like what does that mean??!!" And Aaron was just trying to bail without giving an answer😂
Also the fact that sonny is forbidding her from seeing him just make me go "Now sonny you've done this before with Johnny and Ethan and what was the end results there?!!😂" Like sir you just made her want him even more. Just played himself once again.🤭
Kristina to sonny:
And yeah, it was one conversation, but he was sweet. I hate that the Michael thing happened, I'm not thrilled about it, but it's clear it was a mistake."
Translation: "But did Michael die though??" And I respect that. Never let your bratty brother stop you from getting the dick.🤷
Dex, stop," Sonny glared at the young man, "What was discussed is none of your business, the same way that my daughter is none of your business."
"What…?"
"Look, you're free to be civil and kind to my kids, but I don't want a repeat of what happened with Michael, and I certainly don't want you making any moves on my daughter."
"I don't know what you're talking about-"
"If you do anything, anything, to Kristina, you will regret it. If you want to continue working for me, to continue living life as you know it, you'll leave my daughter out of it…and that's an order."
My face after I read that:
Tumblr media
Because sonny be fucking for real😂Dex and Kristina gonna fuck and no one can stop them. It's inevitable.🤭
Y'all PLEASE check out @burned-lariat 's new Destina fic it's the sl that makes sense and what we deserved.

i never understood why the writers introduced the appeal sl when they knew ryan wasn't going to return. felt like they used it as something to show that aaron was 'in love' with ben and ready to move on. what a joke, in reality aaron would've probably ditched ben soon after he found out there was a chance lol
I guess it did give us new fodder for fic writing, an easy way to write Robert out of prison.
But yeah, I think it was mostly a very sloppy, lazy way for them to push Aaron towards Ben because they needed them together so Aaron would care when he was murdered. It was 100% not needed and ill advised because Ryan wasn’t coming back. They simply could have had Aaron have a conversation with Vic about his doubts about moving on because it felt disloyal to Robert or something and Vic to reassure him that this is the whole reason why Robert did what he did, so Aaron could live his life and be happy. And done. Then you’re respectful of the previous relationship and able to transition into the new one. But these people don’t know how to do such things and it’s less dramatic I guess.
I mean they also didn’t need all of that for Luke’s exit either because it ended up being a lot more about his sexuality in the end anyway which was still very undefined really and then he was just gone. It was a very weird time.

How is this helpful? Your wishful thinking and non-grasping of the basic fundamentals here is more demented than my own schizoaffective delusions.
They de-enrolled me because I could make my appointments. I didn't offend them. They already said I could come in. You haven't seen me in 10 years and I've never been doing great. There's no reason to go back on medication that I went off of after 1 months because meditation was more effective. Grace's brother was never able to function and was granted SSI, but I will not.
I am completely alone.

Please try again with Permiacare again… consider an apology if you caused any uncomfortable situation with them, not meaning to and humbly ask them to help you with your treatment.  You really do need them to help you.  They have history with you and they are close enough by to help  The medication, though you may not like gaining weight is the most helpful Ive seen and witnessed you be the most functional on. Once again, Grace’s brother struggled with taking the medication until he went on the monthly shot and this has made the biggest difference for him, he really likes it and never forgets to go get the next shot it helps him so much…please consider trying this route…you might be pleasantly surprised!  In the meantime we can work on getting your application in once you get all documents needed to apply…it will work out, you will get accepted.  I’m sure of it and so is Grace.  OK?  We are here to help you thru this process and you are not alone.  I see you have many people that care about you and want to be supportive.

Hello!
Well I can't get rides there and they already de-enrolled me for not showing up. Also I don't know what magic world everyone is living in that permiacare is going to save the day. My positive symptoms are already under control.
I'm going to attempt to enlist the aid of cowboy faith alive church after the New Year to carpool me to my appointments since they go back and forth every Sunday.
I've already been ignored in my statements that I will 100% go back on medication that didn't improve my situation. This is as a formality to prove medical treatment isn't available for my incurable and terminal degenerative neurological disorder.
I'm doing all of this and documenting it all to attempt to qualify for AD because the alternative is completely horrifying and unacceptable.
I don't believe I will qualify for AD - and that will put me in a very precarious and adversarial relationship with everyone else I'm sorry to say. Where I would be born a political criminal for having a health condition.
For the love of God, I fully encourage everyone to deeply consider their commitment to denying me health care I can afford today.

Dear TK...
Have you been able to get an appt at permiacare?  Possibly consider getting back on meds they offer and getting documents needed from them in order to apply and fill out ssi paperwork?  I can help you on monday if you want to set up an appt or just have a conversation what to do next?  I will fill out the paperwork for you if i can get each document i need, one at a time if that helps.  At least get you in the line.
Were you able to talk with dr Grier?

Subject: Fwd: Welcome to the SOAR Online Course: Adult Curriculum
Hello!
This is Richard Croft again. I'm making slow progress putting my justification together. I've still not been able to work/find work. I've started hearing voices. I have reached out to everyone I know and the best plan anyone has is to somehow qualify for US disability benefits from the federal government - according to our resident expert a random disability lawyer it just isn't that simple.
Meanwhile I'm falling apart and headed into homelessness. It's not reasonable to expect family friends to take care of me and it isn't a long term solution. I noticed you hadn't replied to my last email - are you still able to provide AD assistance in switzerland? As documented I'm enlisting the help of a local church to get transportation to nearest ward in the next city over to re-enroll in their program and get the paperwork of their diagnosis.
So far nothing has really surprised me and I still think AD is my only humane option for a future.
Thanks!
Richard

What if, when Robert returns, he has a different face? Ryan is the fourth person to play the character so Emmerdale is used to recasting it. There couldn't be the same kind of chemistry with Danny, could there? Robron would never be together again even though Robert would be back. I wonder if Robert got such a long sentence so that Emmerdale could wait Ryan out, or if all else fails, to find a new actor.
It is quite possible that Robert would be recast. And then, it depends on the chemistry between Danny and that actor. I know of this one really popular soap in India, where there was a popular couple. Then the husband was killed off. There was such an uproar, that they had to bring back the character from the dead. Remember this was before Facebook or Twitter etc and India is a country of 1 billion people - and everyone watches Hindi soaps.
So, imagine having a few million people mad at you as in the show makers emailing and writing letters! 😂 The character was brought back but then after a few years the actor left to pursue "other options". They had to recast the character - quite a few times- because tbh it was an impossible task. But eventually, they found one guy. This was a struggling actor also struggling with addiction who knew what this role could do for him. And boy!!! When he took on this role, I'd say everyone forgot about the original actor who had portrayed the role! Like, Karl and Ryan are both quite formidable and both are remembered quite fondly as Robert. So, there is no reason why another actor cannot portray Robert and be Aaron's husband. It really depends on the storyline. When Karl was there, his main sls were with Katie and Andy. But then, when Ryan came, the focus shifted to Aaron although that Andy and Katie thing was in the background progressing the story.
Similarly, if Robert is recast, and Aaron and Robert's relationship is more or less a given - like they HAVE TO LIVE TOGETHER for some reason and Robert's character grows in another way- like trying to have a relationship with his son, re-instating himself in the village, in a job, mental health...and Aaron/Danny being there more as a husband, partner than a hot and heavy romantic boyfriend, I think it could work. It has to be the right actor but I think it could be done.
And who knows. Perhaps Hermit Hawley will find it in his heart to reprise his role. But the writing has to be right. At the moment, and the last time I watched Emmerdale was in February, but the SLS and the writing is just SO MEH!! That's why I live in fanfic world

FRINGE 2022 Preview Series - Whale Fall
Steel City Girl thanks the entire creative team behind Whale Fall for their insights and experience bringing this production to the Hamilton Fringe 2022!
Writer Stephen Near (SN) director/designer Aaron Joel Craig (AJC) and performers Raymond Louter (RL) and Stephanie Hope Lawlor (SL)
Tumblr media
1. Quickly! 5 words to describe your show! SN: Memory, family, climate change, orcas RL: Love, transformation, eternity AJC: Legacy, extinction, family, depth, family SL: Purpose. Home. Legacy. Stewardship. Hope.
2. What inspired your company to produce this show? What inspires you generally when creating shows?
SN: Whale Fall started with my desire to write a play about my daughter Rebecca, her love of the ocean and her dream of being a marine biologist. But the more I thought about climate change, and the loss of so many species, the more I feared for a future where the whales that she loves would be extinct. Over the course of five years, this play has slowly taken form but Aaron and I were talking about how to stage a play that is both intimate yet expansive at the same time. Whale Fall pushes audiences to ponder deep and difficult questions about climate change through the intimate lens of a father-daughter story. When coming at a new play idea, many times I’m first hit by a character or a dramatic situation. This time, however, it was the image of the orca. Or the image of the orca gone and my daughter standing on the shore looking out over the water wondering if they would ever come back. As a father, that image haunted me as I was writing it. Now, as I watch Stephanie perform as a fictionalized version of Rebecca, it hits me in the gut every time.
AJC: Big questions are always the root of our projects and Whale Fall is no different that way. Both Stephen and I are parents, my daughter is 7, a few years younger than Stephen’s, and I think that these big questions about the environment and how we care for it and each other are increasingly front of mind for the kids who are growing up right now, and so, as parents, we’re also having to ask these kinds of questions: how do we help our kids to prepare for an uncertain future? What tools can we give them? How do we stay hopeful while also being honest about how things are unfolding around us. We’ve obviously had a crash course in navigating these waters with the pandemic, but as it feels like we’re constantly tumbling into ‘unprecedented events’, we know these questions and need for their exploration isn’t going away. So, with a play like Whale Fall, we want to give audiences of all generations a chance to open up a dialogue through the show, and then with each other as they leave.
3. Is this your first time producing a show at the Hamilton Fringe Festival? If so, what influenced your decision to bring your show to the city? If not, what helped you decide to return to the festival this year?
SN: The Hamilton Fringe has always been an important part of Same Boat Theatre’s mission and vision to tell compelling stories that give voice to urgent ideas while speaking to our community. This year, however, we were approached by the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts and offered a partnership to produce a play that would speak to both adults and young audiences. Whale Fall was pretty much the perfect fit for such a collaboration. Soon afterwards, we learned that the play was awarded 2nd Runner Up in the Hamilton New Play Contest so the stars kind of aligned for this show this year.
AJC: This is Same Boat’s fifth Fringe. It’s our favourite place to develop new work, the audiences are so engaged and generous. The opportunity to be working alongside artists, both from Hamilton and from elsewhere, is really the best, especially after a couple of years apart, this year has a certain kind of electricity around the festival that I’m really looking forward to experiencing.
4. What have been some challenges in bringing your show to life and how have you overcome them?
SN: The biggest challenge for this play was how to make it dramatically engaging. How to find a narrative story for an audience to sort of hang their hat on. I found it in the ‘future’ story of Becca and her journey to find the last of the orcas after they’ve been declared extinct. But it was also hard because I had to write about such a dark future in which my own daughter and myself have to confront these issues as characters in a play. It made me wrestle with my own culpability around climate change as well as my own mortality… it was scary for me to write. Watching Stephanie portray a fictionalized version of my daughter, and Raymond as a similarly fictional version of me, god that’s hard to do sometimes.
AJC: I think that, from a production perspective, there’s been some ‘shaking the dust off’, remembering how to really do this work in our bodies again after so long behind computers and in our houses apart from each other. Getting back into the rehearsal hall has been a real gift, especially with open hearted and hard working performers in Stephanie and Ray. Knowing that we’re all committed to creating a safe and respectful working environment has been a real gift to me, and I think that the fruit of that work is really evident in the show and in their performances.
SL: Yes to that ↑↑↑ As an actor, the biggest challenge I’ve felt is letting myself open back up and be vulnerable with a whole new set of feelings and experiences that I didn’t have two and a half years ago. It feels a bit scary to let yourself be touched by the work when what we’ve gone through/what we’re going through in terms of the pandemic, social justice movements, massive shifts in the world at large is still so present and fresh. I’ve had to practice instant forgiveness and grace for myself and put a lot of trust into Aaron, Stephen and Ray. Our working environment is so safe and collaborative, so it makes the excavation of all of this feel that much more manageable.
5. How will this show speak to audiences?
SN: We are all living in the age of climate change and species extinction. What used to appear in dystopian fiction is now headline news every day. But humans can’t really process the brutal, frightening reality of climate change. When a big story about species extinction is told through the intimate story of a love and conflict in a family–things we all have common–I think it gives audiences a way to connect with the issue on a very deep level. When they leave the theatre, it becomes something they can reflect on and talk about with others. And that can lead to action to deal with these big problems.
6. Why is Fringe important to you? How do festivals like Fringe help you as an artist?
SN: Fringe is where Same Boat Theatre first got its start. Aaron and myself first worked together on my role-playing geek show Test. We followed that up with other shows like The Conspiracy of Michael, Finding Mr. Right and Your Own Sons. All of them had their start at the Fringe as a place where we brought new scripts to life and honed our working relationship together.
It’s hard to believe that we’re coming up on ten years of working together and the Fringe was an essential part of making that collaboration happen for the both of us. As a playwright, the Fringe is a gift; a place where a new script can take its first formative steps with actors and an audience. And, honestly, it’s a lot of fun seeing so many new works in such a short space of time. It will be good to recapture some of that fun that has been missing for the past two years.
AJC: Fringe is my favourite space to explore new ways of working, the low risk-high reward nature really gives us a wonderful safety net to experiment and open up new avenues for ourselves, as well as getting a chance to be inspired by other performing artists. By the very nature of the way theatres tend to work, there are very few opportunities for theatre artists to be producing alongside other creators at all, let alone dozens of companies all at once. This year especially, I’m looking at the Fringe as a chance to check in with other artists from this city, and beyond, as we start to work towards figuring out what being a theatre artist in Hamilton looks like and to see how we can take care of each other well as we emerge from these last couple of years.

I mean, there are phrases in that article that I adore.
“most popular soap couples of this generation.”
“soul mate.”
“Beloved.”
“best bad boy the village has ever seen.”
Kudos to the article writer. Clearly I don’t give a shit about clickbait when it caters to my wants and needs.
