Parents, I'm talking from personal experience, don't invalidate your child if they come out to you. I just came out to my mom as asexual and her first reaction was, "No you're not. You're still young and those senses develop over time. Plus, asexuality does not exist. It's just society trying to shove a label down your throat. Every human being is born with pheromones."

Do you know how soul-crushing that is to a child? To be denied a label that you discovered yourself and took a lot of self-exploration in order to confirm? I'm just glad that I didn't tell her the other parts of my identity.

My point is, if your child comes out to you, try to accept them. There is literally no harm in trying. And if it turns out they were wrong later, they were wrong. Remember that they are your child and they trust you a lot in order to come out to you. Just try to hear them out.

My biggest wish would be for everyone in the #LGBTQIAplus community to be accepted by their families and to be able to go home to spend time with family during the holidays. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community shouldn't change the way your family views you. Parents don't realize the trauma they are causing by not accepting their children. They don't realize the pain that their child keeps inside. No one should be alone during the holidays because of who they love. Parents, your child didn't change. They are the same person they have always been. They love you more than anything. So, be the parent they need; love and accept them.
