Author’s note: My name is Rachel, and I consider myself to be the product of a typical Pennsylvanian upbringing. Fire hall marriages with cookie tables, going to Idlewild Park on a hot summer day, and eating home-made gobs on my back porch, are all things that I remember from my childhood. I am transgender, and many of the things that I write about deal with that subject. I am extremely grateful to have been granted this space, in order to introduce myself, and also, to speak about my experiences as a transwoman in rural Pennsylvania. My biggest wish would be for everyone in the #LGBTQIAplus community to be accepted by their families and to be able to go home to spend time with family during the holidays. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community shouldn't change the way your family views you. Parents don't realize the trauma they are causing by not accepting their children. They don't realize the pain that their child keeps inside. No one should be alone during the holidays because of who they love. Parents, your child didn't change. They are the same person they have always been. They love you more than anything. So, be the parent they need; love and accept them. Conclusions:

It really does depend on your culture, but having parents or family members that don't quite follow the norm helps a lot. Coming from an Asian household, being gay isn't really looked upon positively and a lot of parents disown their children when they find out they aren't heterosexual. My twin cousins spent their entire lives trying to be as masculine as possible, joining sports teams and dating girls but it wasn't natural. And their parents kind of already knew about their homosexuality. They chose not to reject them and it really helped my cousins embrace their sexuality instead of suppress it.

So I lost an important person to me this morning and it has just hit me now everything suddenly feels so unimportant all I can think of are his last words and his last facial expression. "Look Uncle Don, I wore my prettiest dress. Just for you, do you like it" He looked in awe as he took my hand. "you look beautiful, hooligan." Then he shut his eyes and drifted Into slumber. My green dress, now has so much more meaning than it started out with. I will wear it to his funeral. No one can stop me
