Anyway, I'm gonna make more of these Greek mythology aus! this time it's Ace as Icarus and Salem as the Sun/Apollo!

I imagined Ace just visiting Salem from time to time just wanting to be around him when one day ace decided he wanted to get closer to the sun and when he got in front of him, Salem then grabbed Ace and surprised him with a kiss which burned his wings. The last thing he saw while falling down was Salem smiling down at him.

Did you know that in the real story, When Icarus was falling down, he was actually laughing as he sailed down. It signifies that he knew he would fall if he came closer to the sun, and wouldn't be afraid to try it again.... soooo yeah, kinda imagined Ace would do the same thing in this scenario! :]]

Salem knew you would never tell what was going on to Eddie, that’s why she decided to take matters into her own hands.

She peeked out her bedroom window to make sure you weren’t home yet before taking the steps down to her father’s “man cave” in the basement.

Eddie was lifting some weights when Salem sat on his armchair and turned off the stereo.

“Girl, I was listening to that!”

“We need to talk” Salem crossed her arms in front of her chest as she stared at her father’s sweaty face.

“And what is so important to say that you dragged your 17-year-old ass down here to turn off my music when I finally gathered the courage to work out this week?”

“Your wife”

“What about your mom?”

“Did you know she set up an appointment with a plastic surgeon for next Thursday?”

Eddie almost choked on his water after hearing Salem’s question. “No, I did not. Why would your mom hide that from me? That makes no sense- Hang on, how the fuck do you know that?”

“I heard her on the phone yesterday morning”

“Girl, what did I tell you about eavesdropping?”

“Don’t get caught” Salem stated nonchalantly “Which I didn’t”

“Yeah, that too. But don’t do it in the family, damn it!”

“So you don’t want to know why mom called the plastic surgeon then?” Your daughter threw the bait and watched the curiosity slowly creeping into Eddie’s features.

He sighed heavily and dropped the dumbbell on the floor before sitting down on the weight bench. “Shoot”

“She wants to put on silicone. She thinks she looks unattractive and a new set of boobs will somehow make her feel better about herself again. It’s a bunch of bullshit if you ask me, it’s all that old hag’s fault! We ran into Mrs. Davis at the grocery store last week and the woman kept whining about how her husband had found himself a young mistress with a brand new set of tiddies. She then told Mom she couldn’t understand how Mom could trust you since you’re on the road all the time, and I quote, ‘with all of those young women with perky breasts, generous backsides, and thin waists. Honestly, darling, we both know your husband is quite a man - even with his rough manners - it’s the thug appeal as some people call it. Frankly, it baffles me how you’re still together, and faithfully I hope, after all these years!’. Needless to say that the old bitch’s words got into mom’s head”

“That dusty old slut had the nerve to say that to your mom? What the fuck is her problem?! My wife is gorgeous! She needs no plastic surgery! I swear to god If I see that woman…I’ll smack her on sight!”

“No wonder Mr. Davis got a new mistress, that woman is insufferable! She’s determined to make everyone’s life a living hell, Dad. She convinced Mrs. Ashton to file for divorce!”

Eddie’s eyes widened in shock. Pamela Ashton was the mother of Salem’s childhood best friend: Lily. You and Eddie have known Pamela and Benny for over 20 years now, their marriage was stable and happy, with 2 kids and a successful business. Eddie can’t remember ever hearing them fighting; both Pam and Benny had talked with Eddie many times in the past in regards to his marriage. They always counseled him and put some sense back into his head after his nerves got the best out of him and he said something stupid to you. Benny was the one who helped Eddie set up the surprise second marriage proposal at Luigi’s restaurant, and Pam was responsible to convince you to go there and listen to him. Eddie knew how much they loved each other and therefore knew they would be the last couple on earth to file for divorce.

“Why did Pam file for divorce?”

“Because Mrs. Devil pulled the same stunt she did with Mom! Except she didn’t hold back because Mrs. Ashton was alone. She was using Mr. Ashton’s new secretary as her excuse. Lily tried to convince her mom to not listen to that old bitch but she had poisoned Mrs. Ashton’s mind already”

“But why did she believe it?! Benny loves her, he’s crazy for her! He wouldn’t have an affair, that’s bullshit!” Eddie threw the empty water bottle into the trash can as Salem sighed.

“You men don’t understand, do you? You guys get old and you get praised for it! People say you look more attractive, more appealing, more charming. Aging wears men so well, your wrinkles are a signature of attractiveness but it’s not the same for women! God forbid if we ever age! People expect us to look 23 even when we reach 54. We have to battle time, wrinkles, and aging, we’re not allowed to have a natural body or be happy with how it looks because guess what? Women are supposed to look fit as fuck 24/7, even after they gave birth. We’re supposed to meet stupid beauty standards because otherwise we’re taught that we’ll get dumped and replaced like a used rag if we don’t! There’ll always be someone prettier, younger, sexier, hotter that we have to constantly overcome to still be considered good enough of a woman. That’s why Mrs. Ashton filed for divorce because she couldn’t stand the thought of her husband of over 20 years replacing her with a younger woman. After all, Mrs. Ashton already wore her best years with her husband” Salem stood up from the armchair and walked closer to the stairs before looking back at her father “That’s why mom is looking for plastic surgery, dad. Because the idea of losing you is too much for her to bear. She’s scared that your love for her has died along with her youth. You don’t notice it, but she’s been on the edge for weeks now. Look, Dad, I know you don’t mean it, ok…but you take Mom for granted, you always have, and there comes a time when a person can’t take it anymore. Sometimes we just want to be valued by the person we love. Sometimes we just want to be seen for who we are and who we became over time”.

Salem watched as tears rolled down Eddie’s face, he sniffled once and nodded “Thank you for telling me, chickadee”

“No problem. Just don’t make me regret it, old man” She teased with a sad smile “I’m going to Lily’s for the night, gonna sleep there, ok?”

“Yeah, yeah, sure” Eddie stood up from the weight bench and laid a kiss on Salem’s hair “Be careful, and text me when you get there. I love you”

“I love you too, Dad”.

It was past 8 pm when you got home, the lights were off and you frowned at the quietness as you closed the front door.

“Sae? Eddie?” You called but didn’t get a response. Checking your phone to see if there were any missing calls, you found there was only one unread text from Salem:

Sae 👶: At Lily’s, gonna sleep here. Already told Dad and he gave the ok. See ya tomorrow. Love you xo.

You tossed your coat on the couch with a loud sigh “Looks like I’m alone again…As always”.

Of your daughter’s whereabouts you knew of, but your husband was nowhere to be found. Eddie didn’t pick up his phone nor answer your texts, he had nothing planned with either Mox or Monkey. Ruby also didn’t hear from him, and you knew it because you had called all of them on the way home, like a desperate wife trying to track down her cheating husband.

“I sound like a fucking fool. What a dumbass you are, Y/N. Really, how blind can you be?!” Murmuring to yourself you made your way up the stairs to your bedroom, only stopping by the hallway to retrieve a picture of you and Eddie from your dating era. You couldn’t help but smile at the picture.

Mox had taken it after your first double date, Eddie was sitting on the pull-out trunk of Moxley’s truck with you standing between his legs, he hugged you tightly from behind, chin resting on your shoulder with a big smile on his face. He had given you his denim jacket because you forgot your coat at his place. His hands rested on your hips, and you also had a huge smile on your face. Eddie had placed his white bandana on your head because he claimed you looked “extra cute" with it, but deep down you knew it was because this was his way of letting everyone know you were with him.

You both looked happy, incredibly happy, young, and free, with a fresh relationship and completely in love. It was then that you wondered when it had all changed. When did you become the distrustful wife and Eddie became the careless husband?

A single tear dropped on the picture frame’s glass, smudging the background of your love story. Your head lifted at the scent of cinnamon vanilla as you entered your bedroom.

“What’s going on?” You asked meekly, once your eyes spotted the several candles lighting up the bedroom. Eddie was dressed in one of his baggy dark jeans and a blue and white striped button-up shirt, holding a bouquet of red roses.

“Why are you crying, fox? What happened?” He quickly walked towards you. Eddie’s hand cupped your cheek and worry set upon his green eyes “You’re ok?”

“Yeah, I was just thinking…”

“Thinking about what, foxy?”

“I…I don’t know” You whispered back “What’s all this about?”

Eddie knew better than to push you to say something you weren't prepared to speak of yet, so he brushed the subject to the side before smiling softly “It’s been ages since we had some time for ourselves as a couple, so I thought why not enjoy it? Chickadee is gonna be at Lily’s until tomorrow, and I wanna enjoy the night with my beautiful wife. We deserve to have our time as a couple too, and not just as our daughter’s parents”.

You smiled and took the large bouquet in your hands “They’re beautiful, thank you”

“You’re beautiful! You’re still as gorgeous as the day we first met. And I’m even more madly in love with you now than I was when Mox took this picture” Eddie pulled the picture frame away from your grasp and placed it on top of the dresser.

“It’s always been you, fox. You were the woman I chose back then, you are the woman I choose today, and you will be the woman I’ll choose tomorrow. You’re my forever, the woman I fell in love with, the woman who taught me so much, the woman who gave me a child, a family, the only woman I’ll always want, always choose, always need, it’s you. No matter where we are or how old we are, it’ll always be you. Not even the hot nurses from the nursing home will be able to replace you, and even when they change my diapers I’ll tell them to not look too much because all of that belongs to you” Eddie joked making you chuckle against his lips “You’re so ridiculous”

He kissed you slowly, the type of kiss you hadn’t shared in months. Slow, passionate, needy, addicting.

“Salem told you about the doctor, didn’t she? I suspected she was listening to the call, she’s not as slick as she thinks” You asked once Eddie pulled back to caress your face.

“Yeah, she did. And no, that’s not the reason why I’m doing this. Chickadee told me a few things that made me realize how I was treating you, and that’s not what I want you to think, that I don’t appreciate you, love you, or don’t feel attracted to you because trust me, that’s not it! You’re a beautiful woman and you do turn me on, foxy!”

“You don't want me to have new boobs then?”

“Depends. If you want to put them on because you want them and it will make you happy then yes, I do want you to put them on. But if you’re doing it for me or because of what that old bitch said to you, then no, I don’t want you to put it on. You’re gorgeous, perfect, hot as fuck, and I love you like this, with the that body you have. But if you want to put on some new titties because it’ll make you happy and feel better about yourself, I fully support you. We’ll go to the doctor’s appointment together and see what he has to say”

“But you don’t mind if I don’t do it?”

“No, foxy. I don’t mind it at all! I love what you have, I’m more than happy with it. Completely satisfied” Eddie’s hands cupped your breasts through your shirt “I love the feeling of my natural babies over here” He squeezed your breasts “My fox is so perfect. Fuck, baby, I’m getting hard just from thinking about the things I want to do with you”

You smiled widely, placing the bouquet on the dresser by the picture frame before leaning forward and nibbling Eddie’s sensitive jawline “So what are you waiting for, Kingston?”

“Oh foxy, foxy” Eddie purred before pushing you down on the bed.

Doug's first appearance in New Mutants 13 was, fun what with accidentally blowing up a Sentinel, but his second appearance is also worth mentioning.

X-Men 180 is perhaps better known for A) the scene where Kitty and Storm discuss Kitty's issues with Storm adopting a new appearance and attitude (Her leather jacket and mohawk punk phase) and B) The lead in to the X-Men going to be part of the Secret Wars maxi series, but there's

This scene is before Doug was revealed to be a mutant. He was just the kid from Salem Centre Kitty was spending a LOT of her free time with, and what would these two computer nerds be doing in the mid 80's? Yup, going to the mall!

Specifcially, the arcade!!

That is THE most spaciously laid out arcade I have ever seen, but that's not really the important bit here.

Though I'm pretty sure you can't actually DO that with arcade games just by scoring too high, I can easily believe these two being the bane of anyone trying to crank out a buck from video game addled teenagers with rolls of quarters!

And this is a slightly earlier version of Doug, since he doesn't know he or Kitty are mutants, he's cockier than we would see him once his inferiority complex kicks into high gear as Cypher. Here, he's Doug Ramsey, computer software genius, nerd and video game ace who is out having fun with the most amazing girl he's ever met before.

...but first and foremost, he's a good friend. (He'd have to be to deal with this level of emotional baggage infodumping. Good grief Kitty!)

Meanwhile, someone else is brooding, this time over Kitty and Doug... and not in an especially wholesome way

I should point out that at this point in time, Kitty is fourteen (confirmed in the previous issue where Storm specifically notes that Kitty was not yet fifteen), and Piotr is somewhere in that vague are of late teens/early twenties.

I believe, at the time that it was possible for 14 year olds to marry in the USSR, but it was far from the norm.

I should also add, in the interest of fairness, that during the slightly earlier BroodWar arc, thinking they were both going to die, Kitty asked if Piotr would become her first sexual partner, and Piotr gently turned her down (I know that's a very, VERY low bar to clear, but it should be mentioned)

This is setting the scene for Piotr falling for someone else during Secret Wars, an alien woman named Zsaji, who is a sort of walking, healing, plot device rather than a character with any agency, who is regretably fridged to give Piotr some angst, and also to confirm the breaking up of Piotr and Kitty as a possible couple and being anything other than team-mates for a great many years. There's an interesting article on Zsaji's story here, if you're interested.

So Piotr does seem to have some resentment towards Doug for taking HIS Katya (Even Wolverine, rarely the world's best agony uncle, tell's him that if that's how he views the situation, he's already lost Kitty and that's definitely for the best)

Later, as Doug has recently been invited to become a student of the Massachussetts Academy, a school the X-Men know is run by Emma Frost of the Hellfire Club, even if she is currently believed to be comatose (long story), the X-Men consider a course of action, and Chuck Xavier once against shows us that to him, "Ethics" is something for other people...

Now look, if Chuck knows that Doug is a mutant, that's one thing, he has a mutant detecting machine in the basement after all. But to casually "out" someone else was a mutant, without having any intent of ever telling the person themselves, that's just... not cool.

And yes, it may be a "quiet" power, but I don't think a Sentinel will give a rats ass about that, Doug has just as large a target on his back as anyone else.

Also, this is some years before the World Wide Web was a thing, though Doug was already established as a superbly skilled hacker on the still new and shiny thing called "The internet", thanks to his powers, so you'd have thought SOMEONE on the X-Men would have considered that a viable talent to develop, even if only as a support operative.

Kitty's comment does reference the precsse situation when Doug actually WAS inducted into the wild and wacky world of mutant-dom... When Warlock crashed on Earth, Xavier was out of town and the New Mutants REALLY needed someone to be able to talk to the confused and desperate alien (and ironically, as it turns out, Xavier would have done no good, as Warlock is telepath-proof)

But it does allow me to post these amazing bits from New Mutants #21, as Sam rockets off to break the news to Doug about, well... his entire life... whilst wearing only a towel.

Whilst allows for Doug's gloriously snarky introduction to X-plots.

He DOES have a point!

Oh, and as for the resentment towards Doug from Piotr I mentioned earlier? You might be asking if that lingers?

Well, one has to wonder, as in a much later story, Uncanny X-Men Annual #10, where the X-Men are de-aged by Mojo, and the New Mutants have to step up as temporary X-Men, the first time they meet in combat, what's the first thing mini-Colossus does?

Yup, punches Doug right in the crotch!

Methinks the Russian lad has some unresolved issues about our little omniglot.... LOTS of issues!

do you have any voice headcanons for Antares? how they talk, stuff like that?

Okay well here’s the characters that I think would keep the voices similar to what they have in show, because the performances given were excellent and really defined the character to me. The cadence, the tone, all that, these ones work well.

Winter, Ironwood, Tyrian, Watts, Salem, Hazel, Oscar, Ozpin, the Ace Ops are all solid, Robyn, Whitley, Sienna, Raven, Mercury, Vernal.

So here's the ones I'd mess with:

Ruby: I’d want to still have her sound light and innocent, but I’d definitely make her way less squeaky then she was in the show. A voice that can still have a bit of grit, if she needs it. I’m picturing something like Dani Phantom in Danny Phantom, or X-23 in x-men evolution (Andrea Libman’s version). Childish but able to get dangerous.

Weiss: definitely something posh but not necessarily snooty. She should have a very clear voice, one that’s clearly been through a million dictation lessons and speaks quite musically at that. Pick a soprano broadway singer, go from there.

Blake: I think she’d probably have the deepest voice of the main four girls? Not raspy, but resonant. Able to soften up, I picture something like Vi from Arcane or Korra from Legend of Korra.

Yang: Not as deep as Blake’s voice, but definitely with a bit of grit to it that gives her that tough vibe. Where Blake has resonance, Yang does have rasp. Sorta Ryuko Matoi-esque, or like Amethyst from Steven Universe.

Qrow: as much as I like Jason Liebrecht’s work I don’t think he works quite as well for Qrow, which is not anything against him just the voice doesn’t fit as much as I’d prefer. I’ve always felt Qrow should have a voice with a deeper register anyway, so I’d be picking a performance like Wolverine from X-Men Evolution, or Ghazan, Legend of Korra.

Sun: I really like Lego Monkie Kid and all the voice actors are great, I just can’t decide if Sun gets MK’s voice (younger, peppy, excited, also Sokka) or Monkey King’s (equally peppy, a little more deep, a bit tricksy, also Goku).

Ilia: I think Cherami Leigh’s voice acting is great (maybe she can be Blake?) but my Ilia is a bit younger and a lot softer so I’d want her to have more of a higher voice, to contrast Antares-Blake’s lower register. Something that still cracks, a bit like Luz from Owl House, mayhaps, or Marcy from Amphibia.

Summer: if any of you have watched Critical Role 3 Bells Hells and have listened to Ashley Johnson’s voice for Fearne, that’s it exactly. Really soft and breathy and gentle, really distinctive from the rest of the cast.

Tortuga: Tortuga had a very deep voice compared to the other Ace Ops, but not gravelly. Not quite on the levels of like, James Earl Jones, but more like Keith Davids in his Dr Facilier role, able to be quick but with gravitas.

Cinder: needs to be huskier, definitely able to have charisma behind it rather than risking sounding childish, or whiny. I picture something like Meg from Hades or Lust from FMA.

Jaune: I think he’d have one of the higher pitched voices of the male cast? Definitely a tenor, speaks fast and nervously, I picture kinda like Martin Blackwood’s voice from the Magnus Archives (I have no idea what anyone’s accents are and I don’t want to think about it), or Rocky from Lackadaisy.

Nora: super high pitched and nasally, but really sweet and cute nonetheless. I’d say kinda like, Molly from Epithet Erased, or Ivy, Lackadaisy again.

Pyrrha: I think she should have the most standard teenager voice? She deserves it, she deserves normal and not exceptional. I picture, like Gwen Stacy from Spiderverse, or Wendy from Gravity Falls?

Ren: a very subdued, almost monotone voice, its not necessarily particularly low or high, but could totally drop down to something very menacing if pushed. I’m thinking, like, a chilled out version of Percy from Vox Machina, with that same ability to go right down into a danger zone.

Emerald: what if we took Cherami Leigh's Ilia voice and just moved it here what then? Other options I think would suit her would be something like Miriam from Dragon Age (Kimberly Brooks is always a win)

Penny: If Nora was high pitched I think Penny should sound like a literal child, on account of Pietro really leaning into the 'innocent little girl' thing when he was downloading voice clips to make into her synthesizer- or, hear me out: Penny voiced by a vocaloid.

They woke up first. They always did.

A shudder ran down where their spine would be as they stretched a bit. Not too much; didn’t want to wake him up. They glanced down, and a proverbial brow raised as they saw he was holding on a bit tighter than usual. They glanced at his face. Nightmare? Particularly rough day? Whatever the reason, they felt…

They sighed softly as the pain slowly ebbed in. The pain of being, the pain of existing. It wasn’t as bad today. Hell, they almost felt energetic, legitimately. They looked around the room (as if anyone else was there), then slowly extracted themself from Salem’s arms. Hopefully they wouldn’t be leaving him alone for too long. He wouldn’t get touchy again, but they just…enjoyed his presence.

They slid out of bed, pulling on (more like summoning onto their body) their overnight attire as they did. It was nice to have the arms free, for more breathing room, and he’d idly mentioned at one point he thought their legs were shapely, so…tight pants. They flexed their fingers, one after the other, testing their coordination. Good coordination, good energy, low pain…they could make breakfast. They slunk out of the room, heading to his kitchen. If he didn’t have the proper stuff, they could just bring it in. They didn’t care. He was going to get at least one proper breakfast this week.

They pulled out a pan and turned on the stove, then had a glance through the fridge. Hey, shit, he had eggs. What was that thing he’d mentioned? They looked through his pantry. Couple types of flour, salt, no scallion, but they could just get one- it looked like danbing was on the menu. They looked in the fridge again. Obviously, something other than eggs in there- hey, he still had the bacon they’d left here a couple days ago. Alright, there it was. They’d fry the bacon first. Didn’t want raw pork.

They laid it in the pan, humming to themself quietly as they got to work. Maybe they could make one for themself too? Might as well, if they had the energy, and they were going to all the effort. They grabbed the pan to jostle the bacon a bit, then jumped a bit as a hand came to rest on their hip. They glanced down at Salem as he laid his head on their shoulder. He looked tired.

“Good morning,” They chuckled warmly. “...Are you-?” “Making you breakfast, yeah.” They look a bit further down. “Go put clothes on.” “Underwear is clothes.” He gave them a tired half-glare. Oh, he was tired tired. “A shirt, then. As much as I love seeing you like this, I don’t want you burning yourself if you drop this.” “You…can’t tell me what to do,” He grumbled, then squeezed their hip reproachfully as he moved off them to go get some kind of ready.

Ace turned back to the bacon. There was something warming up in their chest. They felt…

Salem’s 19th birthday present will remind the Kingston’s family once again of how two become one.

“Alright, Sae. You’re ready?” You asked with a confident smile.

Your daughter clapped excitedly and braced herself when you turned on the hair clippers.

“Oh she’s gonna do it, she’s gonna do it. Drum roll” Eddie tapped on the bathroom wall like drums as Salem pressed the hair clippers against her forehead.

She slid the blade through her hair and yelled in excitement when her waist-long hair fell on the ground.

This was what your daughter wanted for her 19th birthday: hair clippers so she could shave her head.

“Ouch, it’s pulling on my hair” She winced in pain

“That’s because it’s too long to go with the clippers straight away, Lemmy. I told you it was better to cut it first” You chuckled and retrieved the clippers away from your daughter’s grasp.

Grabbing the hair scissors from the bathroom cabinet, you tied her thick, hazelnut hair in a ponytail before cutting it as close to the root as possible.

Along with doing the one thing she was craving the most for the past 6 months, Salem decided to also help those in need by donating her hair to a charity company that made human hair wigs for women and children who were undergoing cancer treatment or had alopecia.

For many years Salem’s hair was complimented, envied, desired, and a topic of heated discussion between hairdressers whenever she decided to chop off a few inches. No one could understand how someone with such long, thick, shiny, healthy hair was able to even think of cutting it short - let alone shave it off!

But Salem Kingston wouldn’t be Salem Kingston if she didn’t love to cause a commotion. And you wouldn’t be her mother if you weren’t already used to the fact that Salem - much like her father - would always do the exact opposite of what people want her to do.

Truth be told, you didn’t care if your daughter wanted to be bald or have waist-long hair as long as she was happy. And you could proudly say your husband thought the same.

Eddie’s words echoed in your mind “My baby girl will do what my baby girl wants to do and I support her rights as much as I support her wrongs. Just don’t tell her I said that otherwise, she’ll take advantage of me”.

“There we go, now it’ll be easier” You stated, laying her thick ponytail inside the grocery bag Eddie brought to you.

“Thanks, Mom” Salem smiled and continued to shave her head.

You quickly glanced at Eddie, who had tears pooling in his eyes already. A faint chuckle escaped your lips as you kissed his cheek “Hold it together, papa bear. I’ll go grab the Polaroid so we can take some pictures”

Before leaving the bathroom you stared one more time at Eddie and Salem side by side. Now, with half of her head shave, she looked so much like Eddie. The strong, thick eyebrows, the big expressive green eyes, and now the buzzcut. These two made up the two pieces of your heart.

“What’s wrong, Dad? You don’t like it? Do you think I look ugly?” Doubt could be heard in Salem’s voice as she looked at her father’s reflection in the mirror.

“Of course not, chickadee! You look gorgeous, baby! I’m just emotional because you’ve grown so fast and now look at you, you’re a woman now! You’re not my little princess no more, the one that came running after me backstage whenever I walked to the gorilla, crying and asking me to stay with you a bit longer because you didn’t want me to go out in the ring and get a boo-boo. You’re growing up and don’t need your old man anymore”

“Dad” Salem turned off the clippers and turned around so she could look at her father face to face, “I’ll always need you! I don’t know what I'll do without you the day I move out. You’re my dad, the one man I know will never let me down, you’re my teacher, my best friend, my twin” Salem smiled when Eddie chuckled at her last statement. “You’re the only person on earth who truly understands me. Because we’re the same… ‘two hearts beating as one’, wasn’t that what you always told me when I was a kid?”

Eddie nodded and Salem continued “It’ll always be like that, Dad. No one can ever change or replace it, no matter how old I am or where I am, you’re my father and I love you forever”

Eddie pulled Salem towards him in a tight bear hug, not minding the hairs that were already sticking to his shirt. As the tears rolled down his bearded cheeks, he stated “I love you, kiddo. I love you to the moon and back. I love you in this life-“

“And in the next one” Salem completed her father’s sentence for him before she pulled back “So, will you help me shave the back? Because I can’t see shit”

Eddie chuckled before taking the clippers off her hand “Girl, you know I got some mad barber shop skills”. He pressed the blade against Salem’s head and shelved the short hair on the nape of her neck when you suddenly called from the bathroom door:

“Big smile, you guys! Give me big smiles and look at the camera”

Salem hugged her father’s waist tightly as she crossed her eyes and poked her tongue out to the camera. Eddie turned off the clippers and held them in his hand, his arms hugging his daughter equally tight before his cheek came to rest on the top of her - now - bald head with a big smile plastered on his lips.

Later that night, while you waited for the picture to glue on your family album, you grabbed a red pen and wrote on the blank space of the Polaroid:
