Some ideas of possible beginner study activity/goals:
Beginner?
Study the alphabet of the language you are learning for a week, then for the rest of the month practice reading words in the alphabet (or practice trying to read then having an audio tool like an audio example or a dictionary-translate tool with audio-pronunciation and hear the real pronunciation after you try to read). The goal here is to get a basic grasp of the alphabet in a month. Example: Read through an explanation article, or textbook guide, or pronunciation webpage, on the Cyrillic alphabet and write down (or screenshot) a copy of the alphabet to practice reading. Then after the first week, practice reading words written in Cyrillic and use something like Google Translate to Text-To-Speech pronounce the words. (Or if you can find it, use some site with Cyrillic words already provided with audio, or some community anki deck with text and audio, or some youtube video lessons and mute them then listen to the audio after).
Find a pronunciation guide online, and go through it for a week (or find one in a textbook with audio files, or on youtube in lessons). For the rest of the month, practice by listening to audio and seeing if you can write down the words (or if they're words you know in text - see if you can recognize them only by hearing them). The goal here is to get a basic grasp of recognizing pronunciation of the language, so you can look up words easier, and speak in a way that is at least marginally understandable. Example: Go through a pronunciation guide for Chinese pinyin (I went through dongchinese's Pinyin Guide), then afterward practice a tone-pair quiz and single-tone quiz online to see if you can recognize which tone and syllable you're hearing. You can also practice by watching a chinese show (with English subs etc is fine) and practice typing the chinese words you hear in pinyin into a translator app (like Google Translate or Pleco), to see if you're hearing the word correctly. Bonus: if the show is showing Chinese subtitles (hanzi), then you can see if the pinyin you typed into a dictionary-translate app is suggesting the correct hanzi. You may have to write the hanzi you see in subtitles, into an app, to find it's pinyin and compare. Note: dictionary-translate apps may not recognize the pinyin word you type in, even if correct, if it's not the most commonly used word with that pinyin. So writing in hanzi and looking up the pinyin, to compare to what you guessed the pinyin was, may be the way you must search some less common words you hear. Study vocabulary for a week, then practice reading and remembering that vocabulary for the rest of the month. You can practice reading with show subtitles in the language, youtube subtitles in the language, comics, shows, graded readers, webnovels, novels, and news or other articles. Any kind of reading material you find manageable to try reading. If you're an absolute beginner, this reading may just be you watching a show with the language's subtitles (or dual subtitles) and trying to RECOGNIZE when you see a word you've studied, and trying to remember what it meant. This activity can alternatively be done with a focus on listening recognition of new words, just focus on listening to the show you watch to hear words you know, or if you can manage an audio drama or audiobook (even with an english/your native language transcript) then listening for the new words you studied and trying to recognize what they mean. If a word you studied comes up in listening/reading but you can't quite remember what it means, look the meaning up again for a moment. Then carry on. This is a very flexible study activity. You can choose to study 20 words from a wordlist (like a textbook, or graded reader vocabulary list), from a flashcard app (anki, pleco, a million SRS apps that exist with pre-made word decks), from a class, from new words you looked up recently while watching shows or reading. You can study 10-20 words, or 50, or 100, 300, 500, 1000. You can cram study all the new vocabulary in 1 week, or study some new words each week for the month. The main thing is you are focusing on increasing your vocabulary, so ensure you study a decent number of NEW words. As a beginner, common words in the language (such as a frequency list) or words you see often in the language based on what you engage in (such as watching a lot of crime cdramas and seeing 死 a lot, so you pick that word to learn early) are going to cause you to understand more of the language you see QUICKER. If you're reading graded readers already, picking words you don't know in the graded reader may be useful words for you to learn. As you learn more words, picking these new words from frequent words in novels you read and encounter may be a good choice.
This activity can be tailored to whatever study material you're already using and like: a textbook, a podcast, a show you're watching while looking up words, a graded reader, a novel, conversations you're regularly having with people. This is a fairly solid way to increase your passive vocabulary (words you understand the meaning of) by dozens to hundreds of words each month. The main idea is to make sure you pick some new words to learn, and then once you've studied them (even if only a little such as reading their translation you looked up once, or in a word list with translations once or a few times), then practice recognizing them. The practice recognizing them will help you improve your skills of comprehending quickly the words you've studied during real times you're trying to understand them, and remembering the words better.
#study activities#study activity#study plan#study tips#is that going to be a tag?#there's also more active skill based focus#activities... such as practicing 1 dialogue for a week#and writing down/looking up the things you'd like to be able to say. and then practicing for 3 weeks with people on Language Exchange Apps#or tutors or friends. and then you're comfortable having conversations on 1 new thing per month!#which you can modify to be: writing journals (if you wish to focus on writing skills) or blog posts. speaking (video calls/tutors/friends).#or voice calls and voice message chats with friends or on language exchange apps (which lets you speak but lean back on messaging the#person if u can't remember a word)#all activities where you can focus on X new words a month or X new discussion topic. and then really practice improving at that topic#or vocabulary range for a month.

park sunghoon x idol!fem!reader | stuck by the glue onto you
wc. 1.2k genre. strangers to lovers(??), pining + clingy hoon cw. none!! notes. idk what this is but this was todays daydream! so i had to write it into a fic (kinda messy bc it’s a brain dump but!)

you were laid out in your bed after a long day of practice, taking time to admire the view out your window while also scrolling through tiktok. you wanted to see if fans had watched your group’s new variety show with enhypen yet, knowing how excited both fandoms were after seeing the teaser.
when you scrolled onto a particularly interesting video, you sat up, your heart rate increasing as your eyes narrowed on the text.
‘sunghoon realizing that he’s in love with y/n’ was the caption in the middle of the screen along with ‘glue song’ playing in the background. you took a deep breath before allowing the video to play, already feeling butterflies invade your stomach.
CLIP #1
you were very nervous while being interviewed considering that your group had only recently debuted. it was your first week doing promotions and due to being a foreigner, you weren’t very confident with your korean yet.
as your shaky hands held the microphone close to your face, you began to stumble over your words. the dialogue on the script you were supposed to repeat suddenly blurring together. panic crossed your face for a split second, and mc sunghoon noticed that. he quickly mumbled the word you forgot into his microphone and you shot him a grateful smile before repeating and continuing with your small speech.
CLIP #2
you had remembered seeing this clip about a year ago, trying to brush it off even though the moment had never left your mind. apparently sunghoon couldn’t divert his gaze from you at an award show, his eyes practically sparkling as he observed you in your gorgeous dress. sunghoon rarely looked at any other female idols, so fans seemed to single out the moments when sunghoon’s attention was only directed onto you. when the two of you crossed paths, he smiled and politely bowed which caused you to do the same.
CLIP #3
your group was meeting enhypen for the variety show you had recently filmed with their group. everyone was shy and timid even though you had met each other many different times due to being under the same company. fans seemed to mostly focus on you and sunghoon though, who were very giggly and flustered. sunghoon’s ears turned a light pink as he shook your hand, his palms already sweaty due to the small encounter.
CLIP #4
sunghoon tried his best to be nonchalant about the fact that you had both been paired together for the field day activities, which was hard considering his long time crush on you. once the two of you started playing the games, you became more comfortable with each other. it seemed as if you two had been lifelong friends as you laughed and joked with each other.
the members teased him about being your shadow while completing missions, noticing how sunghoon never left your side even for a second.
CLIP #5
during your lunch break, sunghoon still seemed to follow you like a lost puppy. he timidly walked up to you, watching as you served yourself from the mini buffet the company set up.
“what are you eating?” he asked softly, causing to quickly look up at him with wide eyes. he scared you a bit, but the momentary surprise was soon replaced by comfort due to his presence.
“oh um…i was just combing some stuff. i came up with this really good combination, want to try it?” you asked, your tone becoming more light once you got over the initial shock of sunghoon being so close. sunghoon nodded his head in agreement, allowing you to take his plate and serve him.
when you had expected sunghoon to walk away and join the boys at a smaller round table to eat, he didn’t, keeping close as you looked around for an empty seat. since you concluded that sunghoon wanted to eat with you, you led him to a picnic table for two, smiling at the boy as he sat across from you.
the boys all gave him curious looks, the editors making small question marks appear above their heads as they observed you two. sunghoon didn’t seem to care— or maybe he simply didn’t notice, too focused on your pretty smile and the way your cheeks puffed up as you shoved rice into your mouth.
CLIP #6
while walking up a trail to find your next mission, you had nearly stepped into a deep mud puddle that would have definitely ruined your favorite pair of sneakers. sunghoon stopped you quickly, placing a strong arm in front of your torso to stop you from moving. you looked at up him with a raised brow before realizing that you had nearly stepped into the mess.
“ah, thank you.” you giggled nervously, feeling grateful that the gentleman next to you had been looking out for your safety. the boy mumbled a small ‘your welcome’ before grabbing onto your sweater and gently tugging you around the puddle. the action made your insides melt.
CLIP #7
when everyone had finished their respective missions and mini games, you were all called back to the picnic area where you had first started. sunghoon and a few other members were already there, waiting for the rest to arrive. the boy was about to sit down on the plush grass until he saw you and a couple of your group mates walk into the area. you sat down behind jay and a member of your group, causing sunghoon to look longingly at you. before he could even warn himself about being too obvious about his crush, he walked over and sat down next to you, a small smile on his face as your gazes met.
you looked at him for a second too long, causing you both to quickly look away in a flustered frenzy. you bit your lip to suppress a giggle, trying to focus on jungwon who was congratulating both groups for finishing the tasks.
CLIP #8
the clip was zoomed in, and you hadn’t even noticed that the camera had still been recording your actions. you and sunghoon walked away from the picnic area with the rest of your groups back to the car, playfully bumping shoulders as you trekked up a hill. it wasn’t much compared to the rest of the clips, but it was enough considering the compilation you had just watched.
you breathed out a shaky sigh before opening the comments, noticing how everyone cooed over the interactions and gushed over how sunghoon seemed to be enamored of you. people described how his eyes lit up whenever you smiled and how he had been attached to you like glue throughout the whole video.
you were a bit surprised that you hadn’t noticed how clingy sunghoon had been that day, only focusing on how you finally had time to get to know the boy more.
you smiled upon playing the video a second time, your finger hovering over the ‘share’ button before finally copying the link and sending it to sunghoon on a whim.
you waited all night for a response, barely being able to stomach down your dinner and constantly darting your eyes over to your phone that only seemed to light up from company emails and your group’s chat.
suddenly as you were getting ready for bed, your phone lit up with a notification from sunghoon. you quickly grabbed the device, toothbrush dangling out of your mouth as you read over the text message multiple times. a squeal threatened to emerge from the back of your throat once you had finally had processed his words.
[sunghoon: ah, i guess they caught me…it’s been hard to take my eyes off such a pretty girl ~]

Language Apps Suck, Now What?: A Guide to Actually Becoming "Fluent"
The much requested sequel to my DL post that was promised almost a year ago.
I'm going to address all of the techniques that have helped me in my language learning journeys. Since 95% of these came from the fact that in a past language learning mistake, they are titled as my mistakes (and how I would/did things differently going forward). For those that read to the bottom there is a "best universal resources" list.
Disclaimers:
"Fluency" is hard to define and everyone has their own goals. So for the purpose of this post, "fluency" will be defined as "your personal mastery target of the language".
If you just want to pick up a bit of a language to not sound like a total foreigner on vacation or just exchange a few words in a friend's native language, feel free to ignore what doesn't apply, but maybe something here could help make it a little easier.
This is based on my own personal experience and (some) research.
Mistake 1: Asymmetrical Studying
Assuming you don't just want to do a single activity in a language, or are learning a language like ASL, a language requires 4 parts to be studied: Speaking, Listening, Writing, Reading. While these have overlap, you can't learn speaking from reading, or even learn speaking from just listening. One of my first Chinese teachers told me how he would listen to the textbook dialogues while he was biking to classes and it helped him. I took this information, thought "Yeah that's an idea, but sounds boring" and now regret not taking his advice nearly every day.
I think a lot of us find methods we enjoy to study (mine was reading) and assume that if we just do that method more ™ it will eventually help us in other areas (sometimes it does, but that's only sometimes). Find a method that works for you for each area of study, even better find more than one method since we use these skills in a variety of manners! I can understand a TV program pretty well since I have a lot of context clues and body language to fill in any gaps of understanding, but taking a phone call is much harder—the audio is rougher, there's no body language to read, and since most Chinese programs have hard coded subtitles, no subtitles to fall back on either. If I were to compare the number of hours I spent reading in Chinese to (actively) training my listening? Probably a ratio of 100 to 1. When I started to learn Korean, the first thing I did was find a variety of listening resources for my level.
Fix: Find a variety of study methods that challenge all aspects of the language in different ways.
A variety of methods will help you develop a more well-rounded level of mastery, and probably help you keep from getting bored. Which is important because...
Mistake 2: Inconsistent Studying
If there is one positive to a language app, it is the pressure it puts on keeping a streak. Making studying a part of your everyday routine is the best thing you can do. I benefited a lot from taking a college language course since I had a dedicated time to study and practice Chinese 5 days out of the week (and homework usually filled the other two). Memorization is a huge part of language learning, and stopping and starting is terrible for memorization. When I was in elementary school, we had Spanish maybe a couple times a month. Looking back, it seems like it was the first class to be cut if we needed to catch up on a more important course. Needless to say, I can't even speak Spanish at an elementary level.
However, I'm sure many people reading this don't have the time to do ultra-immersion 4-hour study sessions every day either. Find what days during the week you have time to focus on learning new vocab and grammar, and use the rest of the week to review. This can be done on your commute to school/work, while you do the dishes, or as a part of your morning/evening routine. Making this as realistic as possible will help you actually succeed in making this a habit. (Check this out for how to set realistic study goals)
Fix: Study regularly (ideally daily) by setting realistic goals. Avoid "binge" studying since remembering requires consistent repetition to be most effective.
Mistake 3: Resource Choice
This is really composed of two mistakes, but I have a good example that will cover them both.
First, finding resources that are at or slightly above your level is the most important thing. Easy resources will not challenge you enough and difficult resources will overwhelm you. The ideal is n+1, with n as what you know plus 1 new thing.
Second, getting distracted by fancy, new technology. Newer isn't always better, and there are often advantages that are lost when we've made technological developments. I often found myself wanting to try out new browser extensions or organizational methods and honestly I would've benefitted from just using that time to study. (Also, you're probably reading this because of my DL post so I don't think it has to be said that AI resources suck.)
A good example of this was my time using Clozemaster. I had actually recommended it when I first started using it since I thought the foundation was really solid. However, after long term use, I found that it just wasn't a good fit. The sentences were often too simple or too long and strange for memorization at higher levels or were too difficult at lower levels. I think that taking my textbook's example sentences from dialogues into something like Anki would've been a far better use of my time (and money) as they were already designed to be at that n+1 level.
Fix: "Vet" your resources—make sure they will actually help you. If something is working for you, then keep using it! You don't always have to upgrade to the newest tool/method.
Mistake 3.5: Classrooms and Textbooks
A .5 since it's not my mistake, but an addendum of caution. I think there is a significant part of the language learning community that views textbooks and classroom learning as the worst possible resource. They are "boring", "outdated", and "ineffective" (ironically one of the most interesting modern language learning methods, ALG, is only done in a classroom setting). Classrooms and textbooks bring back memories of being surrounded by mostly uninterested classmates, minimal priority, and a focus on grades rather than personal achievement (imagine the difference between a class of middle schoolers who were forced to choose a foreign language vs. adult learners who self-selected!) People have used these exact methods, or even "cruder" methods, to successfully learn a language. It all comes down to what works best for you. I specifically recommend textbooks for learning grammar and the plentiful number of dialogues and written passages that can function great as graded readers and listening resources. (Also the distinction made between "a youtube lesson on a grammatical principle" which is totally cool, and "a passage in a grammar textbook" is more one of tone and audio/written than efficacy).
Classrooms can be really great for speaking practice since they can be a lot less intimidating speaking to someone who is also learning while receiving corrections. Speech can be awkward to train on your own (not impossible if you're good at just talking aloud to yourself!), and classrooms can work nicely for this. Homework and class schedules also have built in accountability!
Fix: Explore resources available to you and try to think holistically about your approach. CI+Traditional Methods is my go to "Learning Cocktail"
Mistake 4: Yes, Immersion, But...
I realized this relatively quickly while learning Chinese, but immersion at a level much higher than your current level will do very little for you. What is sometimes left out of those "Just watch anime to learn Japanese" discussions is that you first need to have a chance at understanding what is being said. Choosing materials that are much higher than your level will not teach you the language. It doesn't matter how many times someone at HSK 1 hears “他是甘露之惠,我并无此水可还”, they will not get very far. Actual deduction and learning comes from having enough familiar components to be able to make deductions—something different than guessing. An HSK 1 learner, never having heard the word 老虎 will be able to understand "tiger" if someone says “这是我的老虎” while standing next to a tiger. This is not to say you can never try something more difficult—things should be challenging—but if you can't make heads or tails of what's being said, then it's time to find something a bit easier. If mistake 2 is about the type of method, this is about the level. If you wouldn't give a kindergartener The Great Gatsby to learn how to read, why would you watch Full Metal Alchemist to start learning a language?
Side note: Interesting video here on the Comprehensible Input hypothesis and how it relates to neurodivergence.
Fix: Immerse yourself in appropriate content for your level. It's called comprehensible input for a reason.
Mistake 5: On Translation
I work as a translator, so do you really think I'm going to say translation is all bad? Of course not. It's a separate skill that can be added on to the basic skills, but is really only required if you are A. someone who is an intermediary between two languages (say you have to translate for a spouse or family member) or B. It is your job/hobby. In the context of sitting down and learning, it can be harmful. I think my brain often goes to translation too often because that's how I used to learn. Trying to unlearn that is difficult because, well, what do people even mean when they say "don't translate"? They mean when someone says "thank you", you should not go to your primary language and translate "you're welcome" from that. You should train yourself to go to your target language first when you hear the word for "thank you". A very literally translated "thank you" in Chinese "谢谢你" can come off as cold and sarcastic. I don't tell my friends that, I say "谢啦~". Direct translation can take away the difference in culture, grammar, and politeness in a language. If there is a reason you sound awkward while writing and speaking, it's probably because you're imposing your primary language on your target language.
Fix: Try as hard as you can to not work from your primary language into the target language, but to work from the structures, set phrases, and grammar within the target language that you know first.
Mistake 6: The Secret Language Learners Don't Want You To Know...
...is that there is no one easy method. You are not going to learn French while you sleep, or master Korean by doing this one easy trick. Learning a language requires work and dedication, the people that succeed are those that push through the boredom of repetition and failure. The "I learned X in 1 year/month/week/day!" crowd is hiding large asterisks, be it their actual level, the assistance and free time available to them, "well actually I had already studied this for 4 years", or just straight-up lying. Our own journeys in our native tongue were not easy, they required years and years of constant immersion and instruction. While we are now older and wiser people that can make quick connections, we are also burdened with things like "jobs", "house work", "school work", and the digital black hole that is "social media" that take up our time and energy. Everything above is to help make this journey a little bit easier, quicker, and painless, but it will never be magic.
I find that language learning has a lot in common with the fitness community. People will talk about the workout that changed their life and how no other one will do the same—and it really can be the truth that it changed their life and that they feel it is the ultimate way. The real workout that will change your life is the one you're most consistent with, that you enjoy the most. Language learning is just trying to find the brain exercise that you can be the most consistent with.
Fix: Save your energy looking for shortcuts, and do the work, fail, and come back for more. If someone tells you that you can become fluent in a ridiculously short amount of time, they are selling you a fantasy (and likely a product). You get out what you put in.
For those that made it to the end, here are some of my "universal resources":
Refold Method: I don't agree with their actual method 100%, but they've collected a lot of great resources for learning languages. I've found their Chinese and Korean discords to also be really helpful and provided even more resources than what's given in their starter guides.
Language Reactor: Very useful, and have recently added podcasts as a material! The free version is honestly all you need.
Anki: If I do not mention it, the people with 4+ year streaks with a 5K word deck will not let me forget it. It can be used on desktop or on your phone as an app. If you need a replacement for a language learning app, this is one of them. Justin Sung has a lot of great info on how to best utilize Anki (as does Refold). It's not my favorite, but it could be yours!
LingQ: "But I thought you said language apps are bad!" In isolation, yes. Sorry for the clickbait. This one is pretty good, and more interested in immersing you in the language than selling a subscription to allow you to freeze your streak so the number goes up.
Grammar Textbooks: For self-taught learning, these are going to be the best resource since it's focused on the hardest part of the language, and only that. If you're tired of seeing group work activities, look for a textbook that is just on grammar (Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar is my rec for Chinese, and A Guide to Japanese Grammar by Tae Kim is the most common/enthusiastic rec I've heard for Japanese).
Shadowing: Simply repeat what you hear. Matt vs Japan talks about his setup here for optimized shadowing (which you can probably build for a lot cheaper now), but it can also just be you watching a video and pausing to repeat after each sentence or near simultaneously if you're able.
Youtube: Be it "Short Story for Beginners", "How to use X", "250 Essential Phrases", or a GRWM in your target language, Youtube is the best. Sometimes you have to dig to find what works for you, but I imagine there is something for everyone at every level. (Pro tip: People upload textbook audio dialogues often, you don't even have to buy the textbook to be able to learn from it!)
A Friend: Be it a fellow learner, or someone who has already mastered the language, it is easier when you have someone, not only to speak to, but to remind you why you're doing this. I write far more in Chinese because I have friends I can text in Chinese.
Pen and Paper: Study after study, writing on paper continues to be the best method for memorization. Typing or using a pen and tablet still can't compare to traditional methods.
The Replies (Probably): Lots of people were happy to give alternatives for specific languages in the replies of my DL post. The community here is pretty active, so if this post blows up at least 20% of what the last one did, you might be able to find some great stuff in the replies and reblogs.
I wish you all the best~

Can I ask for some tips on writing? How do I start off a sentence of I was writing for fluff, (with a bit more context) say it was [reader x bf] going for an activity and he's picking her up
Or what to make them say? Without sounding so cringy yk??😭😭
I hope any one that makes sense I'm only asking because your writing is so good!
ofc i'd love to give some tips! first thing i'll say is there is no right or wrong way to write a fic. there's no magic formula to follow. the best way to figure out what you like is to experiment and figure it out with practice and time. when i first started out my fics were really bad and i promise every writers starts out like that. we're all uncertain and learning how to do things better with time! that being said, i can definitely think of some things that might be helpful for new writers!
when starting a fic, one could start it with some dialogue from one of the characters to cut right into the scene. i'll use some examples from my past fics to help as well!
“Take a seat, I’ll be with you in a— Hanjin? What are you doing here?” you asked, bewildered.
this sets the scene immediately with no build up at all which can work quite well for shorter fics or simplistic fluff that doesn't need a lot of background information or context for the scene.
another more dramatic example of starting out with dialogue could look like this
“Jesus, fuck, Sunghoon—” You shrieked when you entered your apartment, not expecting your boyfriend to be hanging from the ceiling, eyes staring at the door. He floated down to the floor, not moving a muscle. You were used to his… supernatural way of moving around by now, but you hadn’t expected him to jumpscare you like that.
you can also start a fic by describing some background information about the characters or the setting of the fic!
Kai couldn’t write a single song that wasn’t about you. Although he always denied the fact, he knew that you were his inspiration. He poured his feelings out into pages and pages of lyrics, strumming patterns on his guitar in his studio for hours on end. The result was another smash hit, dominating the charts worldwide for weeks.
here i set up that kai is a very famous songwriter/artist, and that he has a crush on the reader in just a few sentences.
and another example of this
The rivalry between your family’s pear orchard and the Oh family’s apple orchard went back too far to even count. Generations of tradition went into the planting, pruning, harvesting, and selling of your pears, and you took great pride in it, much like the rest of your family.
i've described to the reader that the fic takes place on a pear orchard and there's a rivalry between two families.
another way you could try is starting out the scene with description, but in the current moment instead of background info
The night air nipped at your cheeks as thoughts swirled in your head. Hundreds of worries, feelings, and uncertainties followed you wherever you went, and all you could wish was to be back in high school when everything felt a bit easier.
and another example :)
Kamden had been sitting in the stale jail cell for nearly 72 hours, only allowed one plain meal a day and a jug of water. It was a bitter retribution for his miscalculation three days ago. Thinking he could take on three trained palace guards was overshooting his luck.
as for your specific fic idea where he's picking up the reader to go out you could start the scene with dialogue from the boyfriend greeting her or her greeting the boyfriend (example 1)
or you could describe background info about the date they had planned or how long they had been dating, etc (example 2)
or you can describe reading getting ready for the activity or the boyfriend pulling up to her house feeling nervous butterflies, etc. (example 3)
there's so many ways you can start out a fic and it's really up to you to figure out which one you like best for the mood and vibe you're going for. sometimes, making an opening really dramatic with either a lore dump if it's a more complicated au, or tense dialogue can immediately draw a reader in. other times, a character saying something sweet or a simple description of the scene can work well for modern au's or short fluff fics!
i hope this was helpful, i tried to explain it as best as i could! these are definitely not the only way to start out your fics, but these are the most common methods i find myself using! i'm happy to give any other tips or advice for starting out so feel free to ask whenever!!

“i fucking love you.” “hang up, and tell me this when you’re sober.” Dewey Finn x reader angst? Can go either way. I love ur work so much onh my goodness I can’t get enough
modern idiots
Pairing: Dewey Finn x Reader
Inspiration: Prompt #3 (“i fucking love you.” “hang up, and tell me this when you’re sober.”) from Prompt List 1
Warnings: Cursing, drinking, suggestive dialogue, mutual pining, angst, fluff at the end
Word Count: 2,200
Author’s Note: So, I’m actually embarrassed at how long this took. I think I just hit a wall at soooo many points, but I’m hoping the end result is what the original requester had in mind. Thanks everyone for their patience. I know I’m not the most consistent poster, but I hope to take the next few months to write more and redo my layout to make my masterlist a bit more streamlined. As always, check out my about me page and prompt lists if you’d like to submit an ask. I’d love to get a BJ ask out before the end of spooky season, but unfortunately, I’m drowning in Halloween activities. But definitely stay tuned and enjoy!
“So,” you heard a flirty drawl come from your phone speaker, “Got any fun plans tonight? Maybe…a hot date?”
You snorted a laugh as you surveyed the scene in front of you: a large bowl of popcorn, fluffy blanket draped across your lap, Sex and the City playing on the TV at low volume.
“Oh yeah,” you replied sarcastically, “I actually have a line of suitors out the door just waiting to ask for my hand. It’s all very Regency era.”
“I’ll just pretend I know what ‘Regency era’ means and say…good for you, babe,” Dewey said, making another giggle escape from your throat.
Nobody made you laugh like Dewey Finn. He was your best friend and more recently, your best fuck buddy. You swore you’d never get yourself into a situation like this, but with Dewey it just felt so…easy. Natural.
And if you were spending your time fucking him, you’d have less time to stop and think about how hopelessly in love you were with him. Definitely not the easiest predicament to get yourself out of, but at least it involved good sex.
“Remind me to force you to watch Pride and Prejudice sometime,” you mused, popping a few kernels of popcorn into your mouth, “We need to get you educated, Finn.” Now it was his time to laugh, and you felt your heart flutter as his rich chuckle filled your ears.
“Well, maybe I could come over tonight to get some…tutoring…” he probed. You could practically hear his smirk from the other side of the phone line.
You quickly remembered how disheveled you looked. Even though he was your best friend, Dewey was still a man; And you knew all too well how superficial men could be, no matter how well they thought they knew you.
“Eh, I don’t know,” you said, running your fingers through your hair that definitely should’ve been washed the day prior, “Maybe sometime later this week? I haven’t showered today and—”
“Perfect, I haven’t either,” he cut you off, “We can shower together.”
This motherfucker.
“Very smooth,” you considered. But you couldn’t give in so easily. You knew every time you slept with him, the harder it would be to repress your feelings.
Dewey waited on bated breath. He wanted, no, needed to see you. Not because he had grown accustomed to a consistent booty call, as nice as the arrangement had been.
No, he was finally going to tell you how he really felt.
That he loved you. And way before you had ever shared a bed; he thought maybe he had loved you from the first moment you met. Which sounded unbelievably cheesy every time Dewey thought about it.
But it was true. He was sure of it.
He just felt like the biggest idiot in the world for not telling you before landing in this mess. The no strings attached, friends with benefits kind that you had both agreed on.
It’s what you wanted. And for a while, he tried to convince himself that it’s what he wanted too. That it would just be enough just to hold you, touch you, kiss you.
But Dewey, despite his best efforts, was a romantic. Even if you rejected him, at least he’d put himself out there. The thought was terrifying, but he couldn’t stand the torture anymore. All he needed was for you to actually agree to see him.
“I just don’t think tonight is a good night, Dew,” you said finally. He furrowed his brow. You had never passed on a hangout, not even before you two had started hooking up. He tried to ignore the knot forming in his stomach.
The line was silent for a noticeably long beat. “You still there?” you squeaked, wondering what was up with him. Surely, he could wait a couple days? Maybe that would be enough time for you to get your shit together and act normal.
He cleared his throat. “Uh, yeah, yep. Still here, sorry,” he muttered, “It’s fine, I’ve actually been meaning to go out with Ned anyways so…I’ll text ya.” The disappointment laced in his voice made your heart hurt.
“Dew, I’m so—”
“Hey, don’t worry about it,” he cut in before you could properly apologize, “I, uh, gotta go.” And then the line went dead.
You felt your guilt wrap around your heart and constrict it like a python. It wasn’t that you didn’t want to see Dewey per se, but you didn’t know how to be around him any more without spilling your guts and confessing.
And the thought of being rejected and losing his friendship was too much to bear. If suffering in silence was the way to keep him in your life, you’d happily take that torment.
Getting up from the couch, you swung open your fridge and eyed the two unopened bottles of wine you had bought weeks earlier. You quirked an eyebrow to your empty apartment, Carrie Bradshaw still monologuing from your living room.
Maybe you wouldn’t be as tormented after a few glasses.
~oOo~
Dewey didn’t feel like drinking. The bar was too loud, the patrons were too preppy, and the beer he was nursing was too expensive.
He made a mental note to never let Ned pick the going out spot ever again.
It had only been a few hour since he last spoke to you, but he had been absentmindedly checking your contact in his messages the whole night. He wanted to text you and apologize for acting weird, but he couldn’t find the words.
He couldn’t escape the sinking feeling that you had lost interest in him; It tore him up inside to think that you didn’t want to see him anymore, or worse, had found someone else.
He could’ve kicked himself for letting your friendship become anything more without him telling you how he really felt. He was a coward, and now the thought of losing his best friend made his stomach turn.
Dewey’s shame spiral was interrupted by his phone buzzing incessantly.
It was you.
And his heart nearly jumped out of his chest.
“Hello?” he answered tentatively, rising from his barstool to find a quieter place to talk to you. He found himself running outside, the late summer air still percolating with humidity.
He heard you giggle on the other end, followed by a snort. A snort.
You never snorted. Unless you were drunk.
“Heyyy Dewey,” you drawled. You had already finished your first bottle of wine and had just opened the second. Which meant you were feeling very bold and very honest. “How’s your night going?”
Dewey couldn’t help but let a small smile flit across his face. Even when you were very clearly smashed, you still managed to be polite.
“Uh, it’s going okay,” he said, glancing back towards the door to the bar, “Definitely not as good as yours sounds.”
“Andwhat’sthatsupposedtomean?” you slurred, eliciting a laugh from Dewey. You could feel the confession rising in your throat, burning like bile.
“All I’m saying…” he said, rubbing the back of his neck, “is that you seem like you’re really enjoying your night in.” He couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt; Maybe if he hadn’t been so short with you, you wouldn’t have been self-medicating alone in your apartment.
You groaned into your throw pillow, unable to fight the urge any longer. “I’m sad.”
“Why are you sad?”
“Because, I fucked it up. I fucked us up,” You felt salty tears sting in your eyes. It wasn’t like you to be the drama queen, but wine always made you a bit weepy.
He sighed. “You didn’t do anything wrong,” Dewey said gently, feeling even guiltier for being so pissy earlier, “I’m sorry. I just…really wanted to see you tonight. But there’s always other nights.”
A small sob caught in your throat at the statement. Though you were happy to know he wasn’t going to kick you to the curb, the weight on your chest wouldn’t let up until you told the truth.
“I-I know,” you sounded so pathetic, but there was nothing you could do to stop yourself. “You’re just…Dewey, you’re my best friend. And I-I was scared, but I’m not scared anymore.”
Dewey shook his head. He really shouldn’t be taking you at your word when you were plastered like this. “Look…you don’t have to do this.”
“But I do, Dewey. I fucking love you.”
He didn’t know what to say. He just knew he couldn’t hear that from you right now, not when you might not actually mean it.
He took deep breath and hoped he was making the right choice. “Hang up, and tell me this when you’re sober.”
Your stomach sank as you heard the piercing beep beep beep that indicated the end of the call.
~oOo~
Dewey shuffled into his apartment hours later, leaving Ned behind at the bar with the rest of his friends. At least one of them was having a good night.
After hanging up with you, he tried, really tried to take his mind off of what you had said. But he couldn’t. Every time his thoughts lingered, your words played on a loop over and over.
I fucking love you.
It didn’t seem real. It almost felt like a prank, though he knew you could never be that cruel. But that nagging feeling told him that it was just the alcohol talking, and that you’d call him up tomorrow for a very awkward conversation.
He sighed heavily, switching the TV on to distract himself. His calloused fingers drummed on his knee rhythmically, a nervous tick he had picked up after years of band practices and rock concerts.
He contemplated grabbing another beer from the fridge; he wasn’t even a little buzzed, but maybe taking a page out of your playbook would act as a temporary cure to the unease he was feeling.
His thoughts were again interrupted by his phone buzzing.
You again.
Only this time, he contemplated letting the call go to voicemail. He wasn’t sure how drunk you’d sound on the other end, especially after he ended your last call so abruptly.
With a deep sigh, he picked up. “Hello?” he answered hesitantly.
“Hey,” you replied. To Dewey’s surprise, you sounded stone cold sober. “Can we talk?”
He felt his entire body tense.
“Uh, yeah. Yeah, we can. You sound…better?”
You couldn’t help but snort a laugh. Your head was pounding, your stomach was churning, and your eyes were watering from embarrassment. “Yeah, never better,” you deadpanned.
You couldn’t help but gulp, swallowing your shame. “I’m uh, actually here,” you stumbled awkwardly, “Like, at your place.”
Before you could even think of what you’d say next, Dewey’s door swung open and he stood in front of you, wide-eyed and clearly shocked at your presence.
You both stood in a rigid silence for a moment, unsure of what to say given what had transpired earlier that evening.
“Hey,” he said.
“Hi,” you squeaked.
He couldn’t help but give you a once over, a tiny smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. Running his fingers through his dark brown hair, he blurted the first thing that came to mind.
“Did you mean it?”
You blinked stupidly. “Did I mean it?” you had to repeat his question just to let it sink in.
“Yeah,” he doubled down, “Did you actually mean it when you said you loved me? Or was it the booze talking? Because honestly if it was the booze talking, I’d completely understand, I mean shit, I say things I don’t mean all the time when I’m hammered, just ask Ned—”
“Dewey—”
“—I mean seriously, I was being such a fucking jackass earlier, but it’s only because I’d never thought you’d be into me the way that I’m into you, and—”
“Dewey!” you said again, finally cutting off his rambling, “Breathe.”
He took a shallow breath.
“I meant it,” the words tumbled from your mouth, “I love you. And I’m sorry that it took me getting completely shitfaced after our fight for me to finally tell you. I really was scared of losing whatever we had, and I totally get it if you don’t feel the same way and—”
“Now I gotta shut you up, babe,” Dewey said, his voice smooth despite his cheeks being flush.
He grabbed your waist and pulled you towards him, placing a surprisingly gentle kiss on your mouth. You had kissed Dewey hundreds of times since you began hooking up, but there was something different about this one.
It felt like he wasn’t holding back anymore, and neither were you.
Just as you started to deepen the kiss, he pulled away. “And if it wasn’t obvious, I love you, too. And I really am sorry for tonight.”
Your heart swelled at hearing him reciprocate, and you threw your arms around his neck. “I’m sorry, too. I guess we were both being idiots, huh?”
He nodded, and you giggled. “Maybe…we could make it up to each other? Say, right now?”
You smirked, and kissed him one more time for good measure. “That’s the best idea you’ve had in months, Finn.”

Writing Commissions: OPEN
Hello everyone! I could really use some help this month (I was out sick from work and my paycheck took a major hit) so Writing Commissions are open!
I’m primarily a romance author, specifically monster-human romances. I’ve been an active writer for about three years now, with two running serials you can read here and here, as well as several oneshots, a few of which I’ll link below:
Hero/Villain (1k words)
Reader/shadow creature (3.6k words)
NSFW - Human/Merfolk (2k words)
Best Shot - Human/Alien (6k words)
My work is primarily focused on OC’s, but I’m also happy to try my hand at fanfic for any fandom! It focuses heavily on character interactions that are usually in the modern world or a typical dnd fantasy setting. I’m very practiced at writing dialogue, and I love to explore kink through both SFW and NSFW stories (not sure what SFW kink entails? Commission me and find out! Lol)
Commission Tiers are as follows:
Tier 1: $10 (Delivery: 1 week after payment)
1k words max
NSFW +$5
Bullet points/headcanons
Tier 2: $20 (Delivery: 10 Days)
Between 1.5-2k words
NSFW +$6
Tier 3: $30 (Delivery: 2 Weeks)
Between 2.5-3k words
NSFW +$7
I will NOT write:
Extended scenes of physical violence/torture
Gross-out/splattergore
NSFW of underage characters
Beastiality
I require full payment after approval through venmo or cashapp, but review is available for each tier before final delivery, and I’m happy to (reasonably) talk through things as I’m working them.
If unable to contribute, I’d love to get the word out, so reblogs are love! Thank you for hearing my pitch <3

Today was indeed a wonderful start to Day 1 of HLAW 2024 so far!! We got little bursts of nostalgia through some very beautiful pieces from the past, as well as some incredible new work!! We hope you keep them coming because Day 1 isn't over yet 🩷🩷 What we have got so far is so amazing and we can't wait to see what you all have in store for us!
Tomorrow is Day 2, and we have two themes ready for it as well!
Our first theme is, of course, flowers! A representation of her maternal home, something she has always had a real fascination for. Remember how she would excitedly show us a moonflower in bloom at night and tell us the meanings of flowers? Many of us practically associate Hana with flowers, spring and new life 🩷🩷🩷
The next theme is Fashion Design! This is a skill that Hana often exhibits for the people she loves. There have been so many instances where we have been treated to her handmade creations, like the black cheongsam that holds so many memories of her grandmother, or the gorgeous red outfit she made for the MC (appropriately titled "Hana's Heart!") or even the lovely blue dress she creates for her fianceé's engagement photoshoot!! This would be a perfect opportunity to explore that skill and how she expresses her emotions for those she loves through it!!
Any content is welcome!! Fanfic, fanart, edits, moodboards, interactive, media, headcanons, screenshots, playlists, meta...even screenshots of your favourite scenes would be great!! Our only requirement is that the content is centered on Hana, and that the depiction of her is positive. You can also send in WIPs in case you don't complete a work!
You can also send in a work on the days following a particular theme - this is no pressure for it to be put up exactly that day! We will also have an extra week for anyone who still needs time 💕 May 4th will be our final official date for entries (to incorporate into our video!) but HLAW will still be open for entries for the rest of the year until the next event!
You can find our full list of prompts here!
Be sure to do the following when you make your posts:
1. Use the tags #hanaleeappreciationweek and #HLAW in the tags (along with the day you made the post for - #HLAW Day 1, #HLAW Day 2 etc)
2. Tag @hanaleeappreciationweek, and hosts @lizzybeth1986 and @sazanes in your work!
FAN CONTENT BLOGS are instrumental in keeping the fandom alive - with events and fun activities that encourage us all to contribute and create. They have also been amazing in their support towards our character events. Do check them out to see all the new incredible events and prompts coming up!
@choicesficwriterscreations - Primarily fanfic and fanart (no AI allowed). Check out their rules and roster of events!
@choicesmonthlychallenge & @choicesaprilchallenge24 - Any and all content welcome (No AI content)! They have a collection of prompts you can use for the month of April!
@choicespride - Any and all content is welcome, as long as it is centered around queer characters and/or themes.
@choicesflashfics - Primarily fanfic under a 2500 word count. Every week they use new dialogue prompts. The prompts for the coming week will be out soon!
@choicesholidays - Any and all content welcome, as long as it is centered around one of the holidays listed! Currently, they are hosting Spring Fling!
@choicesprompts - Mostly fanfic preferred! You can check out their current Round Robin event here!
Happy Hana Lee Appreciation Week, everyone!!

[CN] Victor’s Carbon Pen and Glass Bead Event (Day 1)
⌚ This post contains detailed spoilers for content yet to be released on the global server! ⌚
✦ thursday || friday || saturday || sunday || monday || tuesday || wednesday

【High School Affiliated to Loveland University Second Year (Section 1) Semester Schedule - Thursday】
✄┈┈┈┈┈┈
[Tidbits]: To not break the flow, gonna put the note first– in the first dialogue, Victor’s classmates address him as “老李” (Lao Li)~ the way I hate English vocabulary at times like this LMAO the term “老” here is used as a teasing remark by his classmates to express their respect/ honor for him sarcastically given that not only he’s ahead of the crowd but he acts far too mature beyond his years as well~😂
—
[MATH]:

“Sir Vic, what answer did you get for the second-to-last question?”
“Square root of 2.”
“OK! Now, what option did you choose for the tenth question?”
“I chose option C, but I’m not sure.”
“It should be option A… P is the symmetric point with respect to the straight line x-y=0…”
For the math teacher who loves giving impromptu quizzes, getting the students to engage in discussions during the ten-minute break is also one of their “conspiracies.”
—
[BIOLOGY]:
Looking at the textbook he’s already highlighted with the key points long ago, Victor takes out a collection of competition-grade questions that are carefully sorted to align with the relevant exam topics. As he listens, he begins contemplating the problems.
—
[CHINESE]:
Everyone is on their “best behavior” during the homeroom teacher’s class. The beaming woman is speaking eloquently on the stage, while Victor looks down at a reading comprehension analysis. He finds that he understands it even better than the original writer.
There are so many incomprehensible things in this world.
—
[CHEMISTRY]:
There are less than ten minutes to go until the end of the class. Glancing from afar, Victor notices that Zheng Xi, who is seated near the front door, already seems to be in a stance ready to bolt at any moment. Victor can’t help but feel hungry as he feels himself being infected by the sight.
—
[PHYSICS]:

Is it really possible for anyone to stay alert and not feel sleepy in the first class of the afternoon?
Yes, Victor doesn’t feel sleepy in the slightest.
—
[MUSIC]:

“Aside from focusing on studies, I hope that everyone can enhance their perception of various forms of “aesthetics.” This semester in music class, the teacher aims to create a platform for self-expression, where each student can showcase their talents through musical instrument performances, singing, or dancing. Last week, several students performed exceptionally well. Now, we’ll continue with the presentations in order of student numbers. Up next is student number 23.”
“Does the vice class monitor know how to play the piano?”
“I’m not sure, I’ve never seen him playing it.”
“...”
“...”
“...”
“...Thank you, Victor, for your performance. Music is a form of self-expression. But, next time, perhaps you can also consider singing a song?”
—
[ENGLISH]:
Led by the arrangement of the passionate young teacher, the class is divided into multiple small groups, each assigned to perform different roles based on the textbook content. However––
With a sense of resignation, Victor touches the curly wig on his head and remains silent for a moment. Despite so, he still earnestly delivers the lines of the judge.
“I’m already a mature high school student,” he thinks to himself, feeling at a loss for words.
—
[ENGLISH]:

One of the biggest benefits of the campus activities on Thursday is that Victor can seamlessly participate in the Model United Nations (MUN) right after his English class.
Even if one practices their lines in advance, no one will raise an eyebrow. The school administration teacher is really nice.

tell us more about these projects! i’ve struggled to pick up languages again after an extended break and no time and a project-based approach seems very refreshing!
Apologies in advance for the long post. I do plan on making a more detailed post on this at a later point hopefully a video but I make no promises these days.
Important note!! Before you start any short- or long-term learning projects, begin a polyglot journal outlining your objectives and check in every two weeks with an extra detailed summary of what you’ve done, haven’t done, dislike, feel needs changing, etc. either once per quarter or 2x year. Your micro-goals, methods and timeline should shift over time, showing that you can reassess the project and try out new things to suit your needs. If you don't update on time it's nbd, but at least try to write a note in your planner or calendar about what you did when because it can be extremely helpful one year later when you try to revisit where you are now and how you got there. 🧿🤍
The main projects from 2019 to today include the following
Greek - Conversational Speaking, 2019
Goal: meet for casual 30-minute lessons with a teacher, 2 or 3x per week to build up conversational skills and high frequency grammar in use as a passive bilingual (it being the native language which I actively lost growing up for various reasons).
Reflection: The real studies were repetition in speech and looking up key vocabulary I would need to use to tell my teacher about what happened in the last week, and my teacher supplied me with additional vocabulary to help me be more specific. Now I have a record of that vocabulary which I can review whenever by topic/story. Plus my family did notice my drastic improvement and asked if I had been studying.
Irish - The Merlin Project (Quarantine Project), 2020-2022 (+ ongoing, needs new methodology because I met my aims a while back at this point)
Aim: Go from A2 to B1 by learning to write so that you can have the skills to be able to read longer texts
Challenge: Rewatch an episode from the last show that you watched and write down what you see in as much detail as possible, making sure to use a grammar point you’re currently studying in your writing. Look up new words to make the text more specific and add them to the description. Correct your text. Watch the same scene again and add more detail, as in the following:

(Basically: first: do a grammar practice, then: watch 30 seconds, write using that grammar, translate dialogue if you want, consult dictionary, write again incorporating the new words and/or make the sentences more complex, at the end: correct your text yourself or with a teacher, start again and repeat until the scene or full episode is complete or you've exhausted the usefulness of the exercise.)
Alternatively just write or translate fanfiction, but I don't say that here.
By self-correcting you should become very confident on the basic skills at your level, whereas the rewriting itself allows for varied attempts at forming sentences and vocabulary acquisition in a specific context.
FYI I posted the project itself along with the notes to my website (here) and intend to share the presentation on the experience I gave in the Gaeltacht this past August soon enough.
Multilingual, select Romance and Germanic languages - The Diana Project, 2022-present
Challenge: dive deep into the rhythm, melody and sound of certain languages (which relate to a poet I’m analysing) via a slow read of poetry and familiarisation with the poet, poet-translator and poet-actor
Components: read, write, translate and recite poetry on the subject of Greco-Roman tragedy (now its shifting to satire after 1+ year or so of tragic influences) from select eras and in select styles, ex. ottava rima, rhyming verse & simultaneously learn about the rhetoric of poetics that influenced these authors and their poems or translations
These writings I’m still adding to my website as part of a translation, recitation and poetry portfolio.
Most recently, I’ve started what I call the Secret Senecan Project which requires reading certain ancient and mediaevil texts on stories I’m familiar with in the original, identifying key words based on context then extrapolating the grammar from their features (declinations, location in reference to other word forms, etc.). The next step will be to compare these predictions with the bilingual translation and consult my grammar books in those languages to confirm or improve my predictions.
If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading! I hope to polish this up and make the details more learner-friendly sometime before 2024. (:

Unit 5 Blog Post: Citizen Science and Conservation Practices
Happy thanksgiving everyone!
Given that this week’s blog prompt is open, I wanted to share some thoughts inspired by our course content so far.
While watching Washington Wachira’s TED Talk "For the Love of Birds," I began reflecting on the role of citizen science. Apps like iNaturalist, which is widely used in Guelph, offer a powerful tool to connect people with nature by allowing users to log observations. However, they also inadvertently filter participation.
For instance, I’ve spoken with older individuals who possess immense knowledge of local flora and fauna but do not engage with these apps. Their insights are invaluable, yet their observations remain undocumented in digital platforms. This raises a concern: Are we excluding certain demographics from contributing to citizen science simply because of a technological barrier?
This issue highlights the need to design more inclusive citizen science initiatives. If older generations or non-tech-savvy individuals struggle to access these platforms, we may miss crucial knowledge. Digital platforms should be complemented with physical or analog extensions—perhaps logbooks or community-led observation notebooks that can be collected and digitized by volunteers.
During my time in Kenya, I witnessed how citizens live in harmony with their natural environment. Kenya’s incredible biodiversity, which spans savannahs, tropical forests, deserts, and highlands, surpasses that of Canada. Yet, despite this richness, much of the local knowledge remains undocumented in apps or digital tools. Conservation in Kenya requires more than just technological solutions—it depends on community engagement and biocultural conservation. One of my professors, Carol Muriuki, a conservationist with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), shared insights that transformed my understanding of conservation. She emphasized that conservation cannot follow a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Community stewardship and biocultural conservation is crucial for designing conservation initiatives that have a lasting positive impact. Instead of crafting a conservation plan that looks good on paper but is not feasible in the real world. Each initiative must account for ecological, economic, and cultural realities.
A compelling example is the Lake Naivasha region, where rising water levels—likely caused by climate change—are displacing communities that rely on the lake for food and income. As Carol explained, simply forcing people to relocate isn’t a viable solution. Instead, NEMA is working on a more holistic approach, such as restructuring hydrological infrastructure, planting mangrove trees, and compensating displaced families. This approach integrates the needs of both people and the environment, exemplifying how inclusive conservation practices can lead to sustainable outcomes.

Figure 1. Blurry view of Lake Naivasha from the campground in Kenya (Griffiths, 2024)
I see Carol’s work as a model for future conservation efforts, where citizen science plays a central role in shaping projects rather than just being a tool for data collection. For citizen science to be effective, it must evolve beyond passive contributions. It should foster continuous dialogue between scientists and the public, ensuring citizens actively participate in research and conservation initiatives. This approach could help address the issue of bias in scientific sampling. Scientists often focus on charismatic species—those that are easy to observe or already have a wealth of knowledge available from past studies. As opposed to cryptic or under-studied species. In contrast, citizen observations tend to be more exploratory, as participants are not constrained by preconceptions about which species are significant, enriching scientific understanding in unexpected ways.
One of the biggest takeaways from this course is the realization that academic science offers only a narrow lens through which to engage with nature. As students, it’s easy to become trapped within the confines of scientific rigor and overlook the many other ways people connect with the natural world. Yet, through this course, I’ve learned that storytelling, art, and lived experiences are equally powerful tools for interpreting the environment. For example, conservation is as much about understanding community needs as it is about protecting ecosystems. Similarly, citizen science is not just about data—it’s about fostering a deeper relationship between people and nature.
Ultimately, effective conservation requires both emotional and intellectual engagement. Successful initiatives depend on integrating scientific knowledge with community stewardship. Similarly, citizen science can only reach its full potential when it invites participation from all walks of life—from scientists, to tech-savvy citizens, and those more comfortable with traditional forms of engagement. As I reflect on what we’ve covered so far, I believe we are just beginning to scratch the surface of how we can engage an audience with nature. The challenge lies in finding new ways to connect with both people and the environment—whether through technology, community dialogue, or personal storytelling.

AO3 Wrapped, or not really, but just some belated/scattered thoughts, reflections, personal milestones, etc + “resolutions” for 2024:
First of all, if you’re reading this, or anything I’ve written for my beloved niche fandoms, THANK YOU! I don’t pay much mind to AO3 stats but I feel blessed for all your bookmarks, kudos, hits, and any written feedback you’ve left here or on the Archive. I may write first and foremost for myself but it wouldn’t be half as fun without an audience. I couldn’t ask for a better one. You guys are all wonderful and I’m always thrilled to hear from you. I still have a crazy backlog of comments to reply to, but rest assured they are all loved and appreciated!
I am my own harshest critic but this is supposed to be fun and indulgent, right? So I am forcing myself to take stock of my own accomplishments this past year:
Better productivity. 68,974 words in a year ain’t bad for an unpaid side hustle! I work 40 hours a week with a grueling commute and an active social life, so for me finding the time/motivation/energy to write is always Obstacle #1. 2023 was the year I settled into a comfortable groove battling The Horrors + Executive Dysfunction and building solid drafting habits that are sustainable long-term. I can be flexible without abandoning goals, and I can commit to deadlines without being draconian with myself. I am much more instinctive about booting up the laptop/pulling out a pen/even opening the Notes app on my phone whenever I have the opportunity to do so. Whether it’s four hours or a quarter of an hour, I am making it work and making the most of my time. I am writing a lot more, and better, and faster, than I ever have previously. There’s no alchemy behind it except some very modest, manageable regularity! And that’s super encouraging.
Better writing. Amateur Hobbyist that I am, I am nevertheless feeling pretty all right about my improvements this year. Plenty still to work on, and forever in progress, but I am confident playing to my strengths (dialogue, characterization, chemistry, atmosphere), and sharpening my structural skills (satisfying interplay of plot, themes, subtext, and symbolism). I have developed a style and narrative POV/interiority that I think is a good match for the source material and (I hope!) enjoyable to read. Crazy how if you do something over and over and over you wind up… getting better at it! Who would have thought. I also made a point to devour a ton of published fiction last year and credit that just as much, if not more so, than practice at the craft itself. It really is true that the more you read, the better you write!
Finished a 45k canon-divergent AU set in a totally different time in a totally different place. I used to be terrified of undertaking anything longer than 10-20k. With Some Weird Sin in the bag/far and above my most popular fic in the Heat 1995 fandom, the scale of my own ambitions doesn’t intimidate me so much anymore.
Finished my best work that I’ve ever written. And in record time! Less than a week! I am so proud of Double Trouble. I’m impressed that I made such a wacky crossover concept work and more or less conform with established canon, but more than anything, I just think it’s the most sophisticated nuts-and-bolts capital-s Story I’ve managed to pull off as a fic author. The fact that I can re-read it a week later and not want to launch my phone across the room says everything, tbh.
2024 “resolutions,” in scare quotes because I find the whole practice suspect to begin with:
Fuck around with another Frank/Vincent one-shot before the spring. I am useless during the winter months because of seasonal depression, so I can only focus on something short + sweet + super fun, and currently this checks all my boxes.
Finish Bulletproof. 2024 is the 20th anniversary of Collateral. IT’S TIME.

What is comprehensible input?
youtube
This guy explains it great.
Comprehensible input is anything you can understand the main idea of. So yes it can be a material made for learners, but it can also just be anything you're reading or listening to and understand.
Comprehensible input lessons are lessons where the teacher does what he did - using cognates you may know, gestures, and other visuals to help you understand (comprehend) the lesson. So the visuals and cognates help MAKE the lessons comprehensible. These kinds of lessons are what come up when you search "comprehensible input" on youtube. These lessons are also common in classrooms, as part of instruction.
Nature method textbooks like Lingua Latina are textbooks designed to be 'comprehensible input' but their actual comprehensibility will depend on the learner's prior knowledge. Nature method textbooks are a type of Graded Reader. Nature method textbooks usually only provide pictures and cognates to help MAKE the text comprehensible, but if these textbooks give definitions or explanations they are written only in the target language.
Graded Readers are reading material made to be understood (comprehended) by language learners at a given level of knowledge. You can often find graded readers designed to be comprehensible to levels of beginners and intermediate learners. Graded Readers will often provide word lists with translations, so a learner can MAKE the reading material comprehensible even if they haven't learned all the words used already.
i+1 is Krashen's ideal type of comprehensible input material for learners to learn new information from: i stands for what you can comprehend, and +1 would be "1 new piece of information" you can learn from the material from context. In reality, most materials will have varying levels of "new pieces of information." So generally, the more you understand and the less brand new information, the easier you'll learn that brand new information from context. That is Krashen's i+1 idea for picking comprehensible input.
Making input comprehensible is what many grammar books with explanations and word lists with translations can do. There is a reason to USE grammar explanations and translations - to make material you don't understand, more understandable. So you can comprehend the grammar/words you're studying, and then use the grammar/words as comprehensible input when you run into them in the future. The idea is you study something first to make it comprehensible (something you understand), then you get repeated exposure in many contexts to that grammar/word where you understand it. You don't acquire the word the first time you study a word in a word list, you acquire it (learn it enough to use it naturally/understand it easily) by running into it again and again in contexts you understand. That is the 'comprehensible input hypothesis.'
So the idea is extensive listening and extensive reading of things you comprehend, is how you build language skills. Which is what most learners do at Some Point in their learning journey, if they ever end up using the language. Once a learner is talking to people, or writing with people, or listening and reading to the language, and understanding a lot of those activities, they're getting 'comprehensible input.' As in, they understand some of the input they're getting in the language.
You may notice that most classes, most textbooks, and most anki translation decks study plans revolve around this idea: study with explanations, then read/watch/listen to materials that let you practice comprehending what you just studied over and over. Using explanations and word lists, and then getting a lot of repetition of those words and grammar in context of real language, is how you'll learn them. So textbooks will have you study a list of words, then study a dialogue that uses those words for a week, and practice speaking the dialogue and read questions with those words for a week, and that's how you get the repetition in context. Yes, in a general broad sense of the term, regular language textbook reading/listening materials are comprehensible input because the textbook MAKES them comprehensible by providing the definitions and explanations first. Textbooks vary in how much they explain in translation first, before providing reading/listening input you should comprehend due to the translations and explanations you already encountered. There's textbooks with a lot of graded reading materials like DeFrancis Beginning Chinese and French for Reading, with a dialogue heavy focus like Genki and Teach Yourself, obviously textbooks with a grammar heavy focus that assume the learner will then go seek out their own reading/listening materials (most grammar references). And textbooks like Nature Method textbooks (designed to be gradually more difficult graded readers with only images to aid comprehension and zero translations), and Direct Method textbooks (which use images to aid comprehension but often require a teacher to explain things since the textbooks tend to have little explanation, and some translations but not a lot).
Mass Immersion Approach/Refold follows this approach, studying using translation flashcards and then immersing in content for native speakers and trying to repetitively run into the stuff they studied in flashcards in contexts they understand. They pick materials they wouldn't normally understand (shows for native speakers), and MAKE it comprehensible by making flashcards. Some Refold learners may also incorporate materials made to be comprehensible already without any additional work for the learner, like Comprehensible Input Lessons, Graded Readers, and Learner Podcasts. Some Refold learners will utilize mostly stuff made for learners like Comprehensible Input Lessons and Graded Readers, while also using flashcards with translations and grammar references to make harder stuff 'more comprehensible' faster.
Technically yes Glossika does this - it provides translations for every sentence, so it ensures all sentences are MADE comprehensible with the help of the translations. Glossika does make the input comprehensible, but it does not design the target language used to be comprehensible without translation the way Comprehensible Input lessons and Nature Method textbooks do.
Bilingual texts also do this - provide translations for every sentence, to MAKE the target language text comprehensible.
You may find some comprehensible input enthusiasts arguing not to use explanations or translations at all - there's Automatic Language Growth theory of language learning, and THAT theory involves not using explanations or translations at all. ALG uses Comprehensible Input Lessons exclusively, occassionally Graded Reading material and Learner Podcasts if the learner avoids translations and explanations those materials provide, then materials for native speakers. Not all 'comprehensible input' theory believers are studying in the ALG way. Dreaming Spanish is one of the most popular ALG programs, and ALG Thai school. Those specific programs are following the ALG theory. They are more narrowly defined then just the general definition of comprehensible input. As ALG theory aims to learn a language like native speakers, so no explanations or translations in another language allowed. ALG has stricter beliefs about what materials should be used and how a learner should think when learning.
Polymathy, the guy who made this video, often discusses how using comprehensible input is useful in learning. He is not arguing against using grammar explanations or translations (as far as I have seen in his videos), he is just saying that language isn't acquired (used naturally/easily) until people get adequate comprehensible input. Which would be adequate amounts of reading and listening to language they understand (comprehend). So for Latin which he mentions a lot, reading extensively and seeing a word in various contexts will help learn the actual use of the words rather than just what the initial 'look up a translation of word' can provide. Since translations aren't ever exact matches for words in another language.
Anyone who's read or listening or used a language for a long time is aware of that. That's even true in our native languages - 'shit' is a word you can look up in an English dictionary, but that doesn't make you aware of the difference in meaning between "that's the shit!" and "you're shit!" and "that's bullshit!" and "that's dogshit!" and only a lot of exposure to the word in those contexts will help you pick up the differences, and pick up how to use it in those contexts yourself. Or 'cooked' - "he's cooked" is not the same as "i cooked this pizza" is not the same as "he's cooking (actual food)" "let him cook (may not be about food at all)".
