INTJ: Lack of Data to process

I am an INTJ (NiTeFiSe) and as an Ni-dom there's four things to note:

Ni is a perceiving function basically it gathers information. But it doesn't gather anything of the sensory, Ni stands for Introverted Intuition which means it gathers abstract ideas or unerlying principles of sense data or just about anything.

Ni is Introverted, this means it does not actively seek or get energized at new information. It's connecting dots internally with the concepts it thinks is relevant to what it wants to paint.

Ni as a dominant or savior funtion (xNxJs) is always deducing at the back of a person's mind so sometimes they can come up with a conclusion that no one can see a direct relevance or connection to. Sometimes this deduction is seen and acted upon blindly, so if you ask any Ni dom they're reluctant to answer or outright fail to.

Ni is has a polar opposite Se, thatif you're an Ni dom, you appreciate Se but you suck at it. An example is Ni doms having no outward awareness of their surroundings or the reason for the effect/reactions they get. But because they appreciate Se, they study these sense-data in an impersonal or detached ways. Making them experiment and be unorthodox weird people that do not confide with the norm not to be "different" but because they just dont really care for it.

Missing Information: the Ni and Se

Given that conext it makes sense why I become a bit obsessive with missing information and lack of data irks me. I'm leading with an introverted perceiving function so I'm always trying to gather information and paint a picture. If I got none of the Se data (i.e. observable instantaneous or new experiences with the senses) I get crazier with my Ni as I narrow down what I know further with what I have. So imagine if I have so little information about fear, I can make a very weird conclusion that may be true. For example my conclusion is fear is due to lack of control caused my not knowing. People could agree or not but I won't be able to defend myself unless I've searched and had data. This is why I often don't share anything. I don't share things that are not conclusived or backed by data/concepts that people are familiar with.

Fiction and Ranting: Te and Fi in action

In creative fiction writing, the Se-data I seek is the feedback that point out something about the chapter or story that makes me want to write more. That's why in writing, I love and prefer wheebyul the most. But when actually sharing, wheesun is what I prefer. This is because of the interactions I've had and I am sure to get if I share wheesun. It's annoying because I don't want to be seen as a liar either. I like wheebyul more but the very point of me sharing my work is to learn more about the effects it has to readers; so if I don't get it with wheebyul, I just dont share. Even if I write and think about them often.

It's also very apparent that wheesun works I have are from the requests and this is one proof that I don't like it as much as wheebyul. My wheebyul is of my own idea, I'm personally attached. But wheesun to me is more fun to share because the feedback is always there. And it's ensured to be thre if I take a request instead.

It has no malintent. I don't want to steal, I always try to credit and say it's a request when someone is complimenting the idea. But I just said it because it's been irking me... that's what a rant is. This part of me suddenly ranting ships is another thing I can relate to being INTJ. My second function is Te, when I've gathered data that is useful to me and Te judges it as an efficient tool to surve a purpose; I do it again to fulfill that. Which is the very purpose of ranting. I rant but I'm very emotionally detatched from what I say. This is because ranting is my way to let go of what's in my head and move forward feeling lighter. Which is literally how people treat ranting. But obviously not everyone knows and uses ranting as a means of letting go in an emotionally detached way; some rant to connect emotionally and get advice. And I just want to make that distinction clear. The way I present and divert my rants into either an explanation about myself or into introducing my morals, my values, and my personal beliefs (this is Fi) despite my Te wanting that efficiency is what limits my Te from doing something I think is wrong. Such as going back on my word without telling someone. So often, I am very upfront and appear honest and dedicated when it's just my Fi telling my Te to accompany it in it's go-go-go tendencies. It's actively wanting to solve and do stuff often they clash because Fi hinders Te from executing something it thinks will benefit Ni's obsession with missing information. And this clash can lead to a vicious loop: Ni-Fi loop.

Ni-Fi Loop

Usually this isn't a bad thing to be happening because it happens often. Sometimes it happens when an INTJ tries to make sense of what they feel. But being stuck in this state or be in this loop is when things turn bad. This is because the solution is Te but the tempting thing to reach out is Se or the fourth/aspirant function. The loop skips the auxiliary or helper function (Te) of the dominant (Ni). When this happens, the Fi wants to go to Se if Ni is lacking that data. And Se is that function that seeks senses stimulating experiences but it is at the fourth therefore not used often, making an INTJ very unlike themselves and act unsustainably. If they seek Se when in an Ni-Fi loop, they get gripped into this, forgetting Te and Ni, worsening things. And this is avoidable by reaching out to Te or the tools INTJs have resorted to when things get emotionally confusing aka: ranting. Ni-Fi is that process of self-reflection that can turn out for the worse if it becomes a loop but Ni and Fi works out to have a direction that is distinct to a person.

What she’s like:

Precious! Sweet, nice, good listener, friendly, gives all the best gifts. But also perceptive and good at understanding people, eg. mediating to the parents when one of the younger sisters is having An Emotion™ or winning the trust of problem children.

Unlike I. Who has some soc that helps her keep track of a larger circle of friends despite her introversion, M. tends to enjoy the closeness with her family and have just a few very close friends. Excellent friend material all around! The sx and Se also come out in enjoying art forms involving the body like theatre or dance.

She can be a bit shy, conflict-avoidant and occasionally a lil bit panicky though.

As a small kid she used to be super duper shy but then a wise english teacher encouraged her to play a big role in a play, and since then she’s a lot more confident and doesn’t let ppl push her around without limit, though she’s still a quiet, helpful person. There you see the difference that a good teacher can make.

How she’s a Type 6:

For one thing she moves and emotes faster than a core 9 would, and she fits the body language – big eyes that move around a lot, stands a bit lopsided, talks in a shrill voice on the rare occasions where we exhaust her patience etc. As a xSFx and a w7 she shows mostly the “warm, friendly, likeable” side of type 6. She also has a very 6-ish tendency to very frequently ask people’s opinions & feedback before making decisions. (the other fixes probably add to this)

Alas, she also has a little bit of of the fear/insecurity.

Also she has a social/care job which might be seen as 6-ish desire to serve the community.

What she’s like:

The first adjective that usually comes to my mind is ‘cool’. Sassy, energetic & a little bit tough, but also affectionate when she wants to be. (though in admiring way rather than a mushy one)

She says the coolest things, has a certain sly sort of cleverness, and an astonishly good poker face. Bit of an occasional prankster. Hilarious. Knows all sort of cool science facts. Avid gamer. 

Not especially popular or over the top sociable, but she gets sad if no one pays attention to her a while. Will act visibly moody where ppl can see sad or worried and can catastrophize a bit in such situations.

How she’s a Type 6:

I first though we might be getting an ExxP type 7 since she was a pretty energetic child, but once puberty hit and independent thought manifested, she turned out a whole lot too reactive and ‘edgy’ for this, and more on the ‘moderate introvert’ side of things.

Since then the sisterly dynamic has been like one fluffy golden dog and 3 hissing black cats. Hissing Cats #1 and #2 are very proud of her, but cat #1 was forced to conclude that she’s probably not a positive outlook type.

Out of all the reactive types 6 fits best because she does broadcast group identity (like wearing merchandise of her favorite media and wearing buttons in solidarity with ppl she likes.) & has a big case of Big Sibling worship for M, I, and someone else who isn’t on this list due to being a 9. (a 4 or 8 might like their older siblings but probably wouldn’t constantly stress the admiration.), but she can also show lasting, pouty displeasure with authority figures who have slighted her. (Like that one time I went too far in teasing her...)

I’m just assuming the 8 fix because that tends to make 6s more bold, louder & more shameless.

Basically she is the “punk teen” type of 6. She can be a bit dramatic & over-the top but still come to her family on advice (even advice on pranks!) in ways that xSTPs of other enneagrams prolly wouldn’t.

She also tends to use self-deprecating humor in tough situations and deflects compliments to present herself as ‘ordinary’.

This may sound like I’m really getting down on my first example (I won’t pretend that I’m not) but the point in bringing him up is that the reason he’s like this is: He was subject to really bad parenting that put a lot of fear into him, there was no good parenting to teach him broader coping strategies, he lived in a crappy environment that crushed his dreams, in a sense ‘confirming’ those fears and making him double down, resulting in a person who is just always rigidly following the same predictable pattern or jumping from one automatic reaction to the next with very little pausing and thinking. That goes for the other types too: A ‘stereotypical’ person is a desperate person ruled by fear, who cant stop or soften up even for an instant cause they constantly feel this fire of threat under their arse.

A lot of descriptions say that 6s ‘Follow authority’ but most would balk at the notion – ‘I do the research!’ they might argue ‘I don’t just trust anyone’ or ‘I’m actually a rebel’. There is of course such a thing as denial  that’s more like the extreme case.

But with a more average, functional 6 it’s not so much ‘obedience’ as that they just like to bounce their ideas off of others to get feedback, or that they feature in other’s viewpoints. So you might get someone who can naturally use feedback (something other ppl may have to learn first) or who is very considerate of others (which others might have to consciously remind themselves to do.)

Those are sometimes pretty good traits actually.

On the other hand this is probably part of what makes decisions hard cause they consider all these possible scenarios of how things might displease or cause harm to everyone involved.

Being able to naturally snap into Action Mode under stress looks a bit enviable from the outside, but I. assures me that it’s actually super stressful & exhausting, even for someone who doesn’t get to a point of just being unreasonably aggro at you.

Though even an extreme case like F.B. would probably claim that he ‘did the research’ even as he’s 1:1 quoting the Pope at you, and then saying that you ‘have to be respectful’ even if you don’t even believe in Christianity. Hence why you get a lot of authoritarians talking about “disrespect”. You didn’t “fail to obey”, you “disrespected the flag” or  “hurt the feelings of the Chinese people”. Because they’re still trying or inwardly thinking that they’re doing the consideritation & considering other’s PoV thing when they’ve long since crossed from respect and consideration into mindless obedience, all while still thinking that they’re very sceptical and discerning cause after all they really distrust the other political party or whatever.  

In a way you get this obsession with ‘mind control’ cause they’re not unaware of & very much looking to guard the blind spot. They’re adults trying to do adult things.

For example, if I voiced an opinion to F. B. which he didn’t like, his reaction was often to ask “who told you that”

That’s just how he seems to think opinions work, somebody tells them to you.

Makes one wonder how he thinks new opinions start.

Yeah - Nobody told me that. I concocted it myself in some corner of my head. And in the interest of objectivity, I should stress that you can also end talking out of your ass that way, if you’re not basing it on enough outside data. Making up new shit has more of a quadratic than a linear learning curve – at least with copying you get something semi-useful right away. In making up your own you might be really off a long time before you stumble on something useful.

Also, I was young at the time and it’s not wholly unreasobale to think that an inexperienced person might be duped. I reacted really badly in part cause he hit my own ego buttons cause I was of course proud of this epiphany that I had concocted by myself, and now he says (or so I perceived it, being sensitive to accusations of incompetence) that I’m too dumb to form an opinion, so of course I launched into full Obnoxious Reddit Dude Mode.

In I. It manifests more on a reasonable useful level like “Oh wait, should [young cousin] be on TikTok? I don’t want him to get sucked into some cultish BS.” which is at least something the parents should have on the radar/ warn him about even if they do let him use TikTok, because for all that it is vital for him to get his experience with independent socializing & experimentig with sel-presentation, people do sometimes get suckered into cults or goaded into unsafe tests of courage.

And in a sense… maybe they overamphasize it but to some extent they’re also simply consciously aware/ mindful of it. The rest of us are not immune to propaganda after all, solong as it’s presented in a way pleasing to our egos. Any type structure can become a ‘hook’ if you’re not careful.

eren jaeger (Attack On Titan) - ISFP

eren is a true IFSP - his dominant Fi seeks feelings of action, and honours his own beliefs and values. anytime eren says “i’ll kill the titans” or anything he says about his goals are driven by Fi. rarely do we ever see eren try to see the other side’s reasoning or why the titans eat humans pre time-skip, unlike armin, who indeed is an Ni dom and asks “what does it, no, they want?” the second he is confronted by the female titan. in season 2 episode 8 after he is confronted with the truth about bertholdt and reiner’s titan identities, he instantly shouts, deems them psychotic mass murderers and announces that he was going to “make you die the most excruciating deaths possible”. ISFPs who display the negative aspects of Fi suffer from a lack of objectivity, are unable to relate to things outside of their personal experience and treat their feelings as fact, unaware of their own biases. pre-time skip eren is all of this and never considers exactly why reiner and bertholdt are titans. only once does he actually weigh his options and make sense of what is happening, rather than immediately having an emotional reaction to it, and that is when ymir, a Ti dom, reminds him of his situation. signs of a Te grip are prevalent here - he was inclined to blame and reproach before he employed any rational thought to his circumstance. small hints of his Ni developing appear here when he begins to rationalise on how to escape, and what being captured may mean for the future and the scouts, but this is all shrouded in how overbearing his Fi is, i really don’t see how it can be overlooked.

throughout all of the manga, eren’s dominant Fi is at its optimal expression when he cries to ramzi in Chapter 131, “i’m sorry, i’m sorry…” optimal Fi expression helps dominant Fi users feel deep empathy when seeing people suffer, and works to ensure that every person has the freedom to authentically be themselves. even though eren knows he is going to kill ramzi, he cannot hold back from saving him, and crying to him is a heartbreaking portrayal of Fi in a doomed character. In the case that he was an Ni dom, eren would find it worthless to approach ramzi in spite of the future - which he actually initially thinks before saving him from being beaten, a sign of his Ni developing but his Fi overpowering it.

additionally, an unhealthy dominant Fi can foster feelings of instability, self-righteousness and self-pitiness. whenever eren is confronted with the damning reality of the titans’ existence he reverts from a strong willed and passionate Fi dom to one who is all of the aforementioned and above all, self-blaming. the greatest example of this that i can currently think of is in season 3 episode 9 during rod reiss’ abnormal titan attack on orvud district - eren’s Fi was so unhealthy that after rumination on being the cause of so many deaths and his overall role as “humanity’s saviour” (which is a self-righteous assumption, albeit true-ish), he begins to blame and pity himself so much that he started to physically beat himself up until he bled.

extraverted thinking (Te), being his inferior function, is naturally the least accessible to him, and therefore historically the least used. pre time-skip eren shows symptoms of Te grip. Te is an assertive function and tackles challenges head on and above all, its defining feature is that it applies logical, objective reasoning to the outside world. pre time-skip eren’s Te grip meant that he was ready to pick a fight about anything disagreeable, and had an overpowering urge to correct everything that is ‘wrong’. Te grip causes inferior Te users to recognise and dislike problems wherever they see them, yet offer no solutions to them. seldom did eren ever solve problems, he relied on erwin’s dominant Te for that and followed suit, or found guidance through armin. come the time-skip, and we are confronted by a strategic and assertive eren; his Te has noticeably developed. although, he has an extremely destructive expression of Te, i.e: abuse of power and position (as the founding titan) to get what he wants and believes the weak (his enemies, marleyans, the warriors and briefly the scouts) get what they deserve. he breaks out of jail, uses extremist ideology and manpower (the yeagerists) and ignores the chain of command, and his friends’ pleas to complete his goal. unhealthy Te users tend to be blind to nuance/context and see everything from a black and white, "i'm right and you're wrong" stance. they also have an extremely inflexible approach - rarely being convinced to change their ideas and plans. eren shows ALL of this: his Te is so influential that he is blind to any other approach to the Rumbling offered by the scouts or even zeke, since we know he doesn't activate a "small-scale" rumbling, but the whole thing.

alongside his developed Ni, eren’s character seems to do a complete 180 but it’s only a development of his Ni-Te. in my opinion, the reason why his shift in personality is because alongside an actual Ni-Te development, his facade makes it so that the strategy and stoicism he has adopted becomes pronounced. an INTJ wouldn't have trouble with healthy expressions of Ni-Te since it comes naturally to them - think of yelena: whilst all of this is happening, she remains the most pacific and rational person on paradis island. eren seems calm on the surface, but the emotional stress of having to rely on Ni-Te is definitely there. you can see it in his table talk with armin and mikasa. he attempts to stay calm in the beginning but all of the emotional stress comes bubbling to the surface in an outburst of unhealthy Fi rage. something else i think it's worth mentioning is that functions operate in oppositional pairs that push and pull against each other, creating internal conflict. eren’s singular worldview and morals in seasons 1-3 meant there wasn’t any room for internal conflict, but after seeing the other side of the wall, his Fi and Te are constantly in conflict. eren’s newfound Te, wants efficiency and order, but how does he fare with losing his humanity and treating the world as a machine as his Fi is challenged for the first time?

an early signal of eren’s Ni development is the thwarting of his previously healthy Se expression in season 3 episode 22. with Ni's future orientated intuition, causing him to be uninspired by sensory experiences, his Se gets shut down as he loses his happiness to the future. eren cannot bring himself to have fun at the beach, nor experience what he and armin dreamed about from a young age, instead, he points toward the horizon, towards the future and is utterly defeated by its prospects. this is honestly so sad, it’s as though he withers away as a person after the vision of the future.

developing Ni needs a lot of introspectivity, maturing and objectivity for a dominant Fi user. eren attains these traits in 2 ways; first, he actually peers into the future through the paths. this is sort of a cheat code into developing Ni, but it nonetheless dictates how he acts post paths vision. Ni is a future orientated function, and it experiences the world through what will happen. since eren already knows the future, his Ni expression is almost forced to mature. however, the second way that Ni is developed by eren naturally is when he runs away to marley and lives among eldians in the liberio internment camp.

contrary to suffering from a lack of objectivity due to negative Fi expression, eren is confronted with the other side of the wall. as he learns about the rest of his world, he slowly becomes more objective and understanding - his worldview has broadened, and he indulges in the part of Ni that approaches the world with a unified vision. albeit a weak Ni expression, which gives him difficulty in making wise decisions in season 4 because of a lack of clarity and no positive vision of the future, eren’s Ni develops nonetheless.

this becomes evident when we contrast his talk with reiner in season 2 episode 8 to his talk with reiner in Season 4 Episode 5. in the latter eren employs a mix of Ni-Te, almost showcasing his newfound functions to us, the reader, and reiner. eren is more calculating, authoritative, objective, and aware of his long term goal and its consequences.

I enjoyed your post on the Little Women characters. I think Jo's an ESFP and I'm not sure about Meg, but I'm leaning towards IFJ? I was wondering if you agreed. Jo's primary way of being seems to be doing, experiencing life directly, and expresses herself in that same straightforward way which makes me think Se. Her reaction to Friedrich criticizing her seemed more aligned with an FP rather than a TP. Meg seems to show Fe and seems to act more slowly, more like an introvert than an extrovert.

I have always considered him another ENFJ because of his insight on people's minds and how to put them at ease and such. Jo: What you describe is less Se and more Te. If she is EFP, then one would expect to see Te assertiveness, as she’s often unhappy and prone to misusing the tertiary function. Dom Se’s primary relationship to the world is expressed through physicality. Jo has little/minimal awareness of physicality. Her primary way of relating to the world is through imagination. Her mind is constantly full of new ideas, intriguing potential/possibilities, dramatic stories, and very obvious disdain for conventional ways of being (which strongly suggests inferior Si). Therefore, ENFP is much more likely.

Meg: She’s very warm, patient, practical, and understanding in her approach, which lacks the rigidity that you would expect of dom Si+Ti or the detachment of dom Ni+Ti. IIRC, she spends most of the story talking about her social aspirations, expressing her desire to blend in perfectly, making very careful choices to attract the right kind of attention and respect. In the end, her aspirations turn out to be quite modest and conventional as she opts for a quaint (low-risk) white-picket-fence sort of life. But then she also struggles with the limitations of it, which suggests tertiary rather than inferior Ne. Therefore, ESFJ.

Bhaer: The kinds of things that he notices about people, the way that he critiques people, the way that he advises people, the slight social and physical awkwardness, and the accidental foot-in-mouth problem is more indicative of aux Fe than dom Fe. Therefore, I’d be more inclined to say INFJ than ENFJ.

Damen: ESFP

CS Pacat’s writing style doesn’t suit him lol. Makes him seem more muted, introspective and thoughtful than his natural inclinations seem to be? But anyway. I observed a few things: very low Ni, probably inferior, because of the way the narration framed him as being completely opposite to Laurent. He prefers things to be straightforward and simple, he likes action over thinking (Sensor). His Fi is actually quite obvious. He cast a lot of moral judgment on Laurent when they first met: privileged, unprincipled, not responsible for his people. In contrast, he considers himself an honorable and principled person. Laurent also once described Damen as someone who stops Laurent from doing moral harm (FP side characters tend to be the ones who provide the moral compass or the ‘heart’ when making decisions).

His arc in the books largely revolved around having an overly black-and-white and simplistic way of understanding the world. He is a straightforward and loyal person, so he expects people to be straightforward and loyal (FP issues where Fi tends to unwittingly project one’s own experience onto others and assumes others are similar to oneself). Nikandros’ criticism that he becomes a very trusting and devoted person once someone has earned his trust (and the general characterization of him as someone who is loyal) is also consistent with FP.

Throughout most of the first and second book, he was always waiting for an opportunity so he could escape. He was not resigned to slavery. He always saw it as temporary and never felt defeated (not tertiary Ni). He reacts to everything that’s going around him, often acting before he thinks, responding to things the moment they happen, leading him to constantly remind himself to hide and control his reactions. He is a simple and honest person, straightfoward, down-to-earth, what you see is what you get. He is often quick to respond in life-or-death situations (partly his training, but his fighting skills are so strong partly because of dominant Se’s ability to react so quickly to things around him). His obvious ease and enjoyment of sensory pleasures - fights, sports, desire/sex, wine, etc - are another sign of dominant Se.

Others characterize him as easygoing and warm, the main traits that quickly win people over. Se-Fi explains his changing feelings towards Laurent. In book 1, he actually had moments of attraction to Laurent, but his judgment and disgust of Laurent always stopped him from feeling/acting on that (dom Se: desire to act on attraction, aux-Fi: no, he is not a good person). In book 2, once he saw a kinder side to Laurent, his judgment lessened and the moments of desire/attraction actually began to increase proportionally, lol. Aux-Fi no longer stopped dom-Se’s attraction.

Laurent: INFJ

Ni-dom is very clear in his complex and long-term plans, thinking ahead, the quick ability to grasp the implications and consequences of actions. He uses Fe to read people for survival - he is known for his vicious and silver tongue. He is quick to grasp people’s emotional weak spot and then using it for his self-defense, talking them into doing what he wants, or using it to control the mood of the room, often leading to ugly results when he lashes out when angry/upset. Damen has always said that Laurent thinks too much and overcomplicates things sometimes (low S). When he has outbursts, he lashes out verbally and physically, gets drunk, etc --> inferior Se.

When under stress, he deals with stress by lashing out at people with hurtful, ugly or hateful comments (tert Ti defense mechanism). Much of the first half of book 3 was basically Laurent lashing out at Damen and keeping him at a distance by saying cutting/hurtful things because of his own pain and Damen being hurt but respecting Laurent wanting emotional distance between the two of them. 

The light side of his Fe is seen in the loyalty he has earned from the people he follows him and his kindness to individuals like Nicaise, the child he taught the magic trick to, disliking slavery, etc. During private moments with Damen, he lets down his guard and reveals that his inner self is someone quite soft and kind. When he describes his younger self, he characterizes himself as a bookish and soft child.

The child-like and light side of his inferior Se side is sometimes seen: book two rooftop chase scene, Charls the merchant side story, etc. That side of him likes the thrill and the chase, is playful and spontaneous, likes to improvise (calling himself Charls etc), finds fun in loosing himself in the moment.

Off-topic: MBTI and opera - Musetta in “La Bohéme”

I originally posted this on my other Tumblr blog, but I can’t seem to get a response there and I really do want to hear other people’s opinion on this subject. Maybe I’ll have better luck here, since I have more followers. Also, also I know that some of my followers here not only know La Bohéme, but have read Murger’s La Vie de Bohéme too, although the characterizations there might be too different from the opera to be much help.

A long time ago, I analyzed the MBTI personality types of all the main characters of La Bohéme. Unfortunately, I was new to MBTI at the time and only typed them based on the dichotomies (Extraversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving), not on the cognitive functions. Recently I’ve been reexamining their types, this time with the functions in mind.

Surprisingly, I think my original typings were mostly accurate. I definitely stand by my typings for Mimí (ISFP) and Rodolfo (ENFP). But I’m not so sure about Musetta.

I originally typed her as an ESFJ. She’s definitely an Extravert and almost definitely a Sensor. But now I’m second guessing myself, because from a cognitive function standpoint, she definitely contradicts certain ESFJ stereotypes. This is enhanced by the fact that her counterpart in RENT, Maureen, is almost always typed online as either an ESFP or an ESTP. Granted, the characterizations in RENT aren’t identical to Bohéme’s (for example, Mark is always typed as either an INFP or an INTP, but Marcello is definitely an Extraverted Sensor), but it still makes me feel uncertain.

One site I found that typed RENT’s Maureen as an ESFP argued that she’s an Fi-user because she lives passionately by her own desires and doesn’t always care who she hurts in the process. That’s true for Musetta too. But does that inherently mean she’s an Fi-user? Or is it stereotyping Fi as “the selfish Feeling function” (oh, how I hate that stereotype!) to assume so? Until the last act, nearly all of Musetta’s focus is on “How are other people reacting to me?” Her constant attention to the emotions she inspires in men seems like Fe to me. But could an Fe-dom ever realistically be a rebellious flirt who drives her lovers crazy with jealousy? Or do they inherently seek harmony too much for that?

For that matter, ESFJs are known as some of the people who most tend to follow traditional rules. Now I know I shouldn’t stereotype them all as church-going housewives who won’t let their kids call you by your first name. But was it ridiculous of me to assume that an ESFJ could be the kind of girl who insists “I want total freedom!”, who throws plate-smashing tantrums while ignoring all pleas for her to mind her manners, and who never lets a relationship get in the way of a good flirtation?

The truth is that I still want to type Musetta as an ESFJ. She still feels like one to me, not like an Se-dom. Her focus on others’ reactions to her and her own flamboyant expressions of feeling feel very Fe-like to me; her seemingly well-memorized repertoire of seductive tricks and her relishing of the familiar feeling of men’s desire seems Si-like; her craving for freedom can be seen to reflect tertiary Ne, and her cunning moments definitely feel like Ti. I see her functions as working in that order too – she’s obviously not an ISFJ or an INTP, and while she does have some ENTP-like traits, she favors Sensing and Feeling too much to be one, IMHO. In the last act, her warmth, tenderness and practicality as she leads everyone in caring for the dying Mimí definitely seem ESFJ-like too.

Also, she arguably does follow the traditional rules of her social class. As a 19th century grisette, she’s expected to be “of easy virtue” and and available to any man who wants her and who can provide for her. All her life, she’s undoubtedly been flirted with everywhere she goes and needed to use her girlish charms to survive and thrive. The fact that she enjoys it doesn’t necessarily make her an ExxP-style maverick.

Still, I’d fully understand it if someone typed her as an ESFP or an ESTP.

Does anyone out there know both MBTI and opera well enough to share their thoughts on the subject? Is my ESFJ typing valid for Musetta? Or is she an ESxP, or a different type altogether?

Since a very young age, I do not enjoy talking about fiction or fantasy. 'Who do you believe is the strongest between these two anime characters?' I watched the show, but I truly don't care. 'How would the story be changed if these conversations would be held by the party?' I... again, feel a certain cringe about talking about this sort of topics. <- lack of strong intuition/no desire to theorize

I enjoy talking about the psychology of the characters and their development, about the plot, dialogues or the film's photography, the symbolism around the director personal meaning behind it, but to treat the characters as 'real' I can't, the more unrealistic (fantasy, anime) the worst I can stay in that kind of conversations. <- tapping into tert-Ni deeper meaning, but dislike for lack of realism (Se/Ni)

I have some sort of patterns about my hobbies and interests through my life that I embrace dearly and remain through time. There are just a handful of those. Sometimes I tried something that I randomly get interested in, but I discard it quickly if It doesn't feel right. <- Fi, trying it, deciding it's not for me, moving on from it

I am not really action-oriented and I am slow to act. I can get trapped in thinking about how do the new interest fit me or not instead or finding out along the way. I don't want anything that's not me to touch me, so to speak. How can I know if surfing is meant to be mine or not? I can't tell and unless i get a clear hunch about it, I rarely acted upon it. <- Fi and Ni, and maybe a core 9 (slow to act)

I am very 'touchy' and that sense give me information that I cannot put into words. For instance, i have learn so much about dogs in the past few years just being with them, observing them and their reactions and petting them. The dog moves its hip towards me when I scratch here, but this other doesn't and I can sense the difference to know how to pet both of them better. Same with people. I never learn how to 'theorically' give a massage, but i can feel the knots under the skin and massage the area in a way the tension is gone to help the person. <- Se awareness

I don't know if I am past or future oriented. I know that I want to be a certain type of person in the near future and I don't see other options. This is rather abstract, and I just know what I wish to become. It is not well-defined, but falls under a specific ideal of mine. <- Being present and looking to the immediate future is Se, but again, a lot of Fi here (I know what I wish to become/the expectations I hold for myself)

I am mostly embarrassed by the past. I enjoy certain routines and places I keep going back to. I like novelty but it is hard to move upon that wish, once more. Mainly because it is not 'any novelty' but one that makes sense to me. I can go to spend the vacation on a wine cellar slash hotel, with its vines and wine tasting, but that isn't me, neither i am interested in wine. It doesn't give me nothing. <- more Fi and again, potential 9 comfort-seeking in familiarity

I enjoy deeply abstract topics and can be in my head for long periods of time. I can wait peacefully for 4 hours in the airport just with my thinking, or creating random stories about other passengers with the info their mannerisms, clothes, baggage and what they are doing gave me. I love people watching. <- sounds like Se/Ni

INFP 4w5 back :) Thanks for answering things! I'm sorry I didn't give enough information to actually have you help me - I will do so now! I am 24. I love reading stories, both for the emotional connection to characters, and then fun of imagining myself in their adventures (I mainly read fiction). I am an artist and a writer - I do so because I enjoy expressing my views, experiences, and insights in beautiful/interesting/creative ways. I also love the act of creating in general - my mind is very

INFP cont: busy, and it helps me either slow that down or connect my brain to my body (I admittedly spend way more time in my head, but working with my hands and brain at the same time helps me feel connected to the outside world). 

So before I go on: this was a very long ask and I will therefore be ‘interrupting’ throughout in bold for my typing logic rather than rephrasing stuff down at the bottom.

Placing yourself in the story: that’s often the goal of stories anyway (and why self-insert is a whole thing) but it is consistent with Fi. Self-expression is something a lot of people like but it is particularly important to 4s. Brain-body connection as described here makes me think more Ne-Si axis but it’s hard for me to quite articulate why so...don’t quote me.

I like hanging out with my family and close friends - I hate being in crowds or in the spotlight. I find them overstimulating but also boring and I don't know what to do with body or what to say.

Pretty consistent for introverts who are intuitive (not just introverts who are intuitive but I’m going into this assuming it’s an INFP vs. INFJ thing unless I see blatant evidence for high Si or Se which so far I don’t.

I love being in nature - this is a new thing though, noticing nature for itself has only started happening since I was 20. I always liked the way it made me feel but didn't pay much attention to it in a sensory way until recent years. Now I love how peaceful and happy it makes me, how physically beautiful it is, but also all the ideas it generates in me - I think everything in nature is a symbol for something and it so fun trying to guess what those things are, or to make art out of things I find in the woods.

Could be either Ne-Si or Ni-Se for what it is; the age of onset is making me think tertiary sensing, plus the guessing the symbol rather than being more decisive makes me think Ne.

I also really love history and fantasy. History because I ideloize old ways of doing things (like gardening, pioneering, etc) ideal and exciting. I try to incorperate those things into my life and would like to be a homesteader or live in a bus one day, because it feels really free, and also I think connects us back to the way humans are meant to live.

Idolization of an idealized past is often weaker Si (nostalgia/sentimentality are often low Si things, contrary to popular belief that it’s higher Si. Seriously, talk to the average ESTJ, they have no nostalgia unless something changed drastically for the less efficient.)

I care a lot about people and social justice, but it tires me out, so I don't actually spend a lot of time engaging. I like listening to my friends and helping them sort out their feelings. I used to be really bad at DOING things for my friends, but I started to realize it was hurting them, so I am trying more and more to not just be a listening ear, but actively engage in their lives. I'm always torn between wanting to help people and make the world a better place, and just being free and doing what I want and find life giving.

At this point I’m already as you can tell leaning towards INFP much more. This also seems more INFP, with your Fi slowly realizing and maturing to a point where you are better able to care for others and meet them on their terms rather than your own.

I think A LOT, and I am very interested in understanding theories, concepets, anazlying people.

All intuitives like concepts, and while I dislike the assertion that introspection is the sole purview of introverts or intuitives, they definitely do it a lot.

Why I'm wondering if I might be an INFJ instead of an INfP? Mainly because two people I respect mentioned they thought I might be.

Yeah...without more than just “caring & empathetic” I wouldn’t put too much weight on it.

I had always thought I was just an INFP (MAYBE an ISFP, but I don't feel like a doer enough or in touch enough with the physical world - other then finding it super beautiful and day dreaming about it).

I’d agree, I’m really not getting much Se from your asks.

But they specifically thought my Fe seems very high - I am emotionally expressive, I care a lot for others, and I'm very sensitive to the emotional feel of people/places/situations.

So, sensitive to the emotional feel and emotional expressiveness are just feeler things. Without rephrasing the whole Fi/Fe post I always refer back to, I find that while high Fi users’ feelings tend to come from a more internalized place sometimes or are less typical in some of their reactions, they still are pretty emotionally expressive especially compared to your average thinker. There are a lot of very reserved IxFJs and very expressive IxFPs and the uneven stereotypes of constantly crying INFPs/IxFJs hiding their emotions for the sake of harmony hammer that point home.

I also tend to get hunches about situations and people, like what might happen or that I should/shouldn't do something, or about why someone is upset/happy, and am right pretty often (is that maybe dom Ni? with some Fe? or is that also Ne?)

Hunches can be anything; intuition is specifically preferring them over physical evidence (sensing is the opposite, so sensors often ignore their hunches if there’s evidence otherwise). Hard to tell because hunches are also related to thin slicing in neuroscience which is just a brain thing. Also this can be Si that you don’t realize is working - like, you’ve seen it before, but don’t consciously realize it.

I also wonder if my constant thinking and trying to figure things out (like obsessively trying to figure out my type) is Ti?

Eh, humans are curious and we all like to think. Ti is a specific approach to logic that for some reason got credit for way more (hint it was David Keirsey)

And I love talking about my feelings and am very comfy with it, which apparently lots of INFPs aren't?

Some aren’t, some are, see stuff above re: emotional expressiveness.

I also avoid conflict in public - I don't avoid it at all with my family, I avoid it moderately with good friends, and won't get into public debates. However, I will speak up in public if I think someone is doing something really wrong.

Could be enneagram 9 which is pretty common in Fi doms; it’s also just part of upbringing, that it’s not polite to start an argument in a lot of social situations, but okay with people you’re close with or if it’s something egregious.

I feel like I have a hard time expressing my opinions well verbally (Im fine writing), and it makes me afraid I won't say what I actually mean, and I also am afraid of the rage I feel in conflict and don't want to hurt others feelings by unleashing that.

W/r/t expression, that sort of conflicts with some of the emotional expressiveness you’d mentioned earlier, but either way tracks more with introversion than anything else. Fear of strong anger makes me wonder if you’ve enneatyped yourself correctly, though obviously I can’t tell if it’s your greatest fear. But I’d take a seriously look at 9 gut fixes.

I also don't like people trampling on my beliefs, so often just won't express them with those I'm not real close to. But I've read that high Fi users don't avoid conflict, and high Fe users do? And I am very willing to consider other people's points of view and MAYBE change my opinion, but thats pretty rare. I'm also a very empathetic listener - I think before speaking, ask good questions, and make noises to assure them im listening, which Ive also read is Fe. is that enough info?

Not liking people trampling on beliefs is pretty universal - even people who behave in an extreme doormat way usually don’t particularly like it deep down. For conflict avoidance see notes on enneagram 9. Openness to other points of view could come from Ne seeing different options, or Fi accepting other’s opinions as being able to coexist with your own usually; it’s also just a healthy adult thing to do regardless of type. Same goes for listening - those are all learned skills and so ask yourself if you did those when you were younger. I did mostly by the time I was 24 but I sure didn’t when I was 17, whereas people with higher feeling, and to some extent higher Fe more than Fi, tend to pick those up a bit more naturally and therefore earlier.

ah one last thing! I take a very long time to make descions - I want to make sure I'm doing/getting the best/right thing. which also seems not very INFP?

Not sure where you got that idea - indecisiveness until you know the optimum response is EXTREMELY INFP. Specifically Ne.

And I get very afraid of not having the idealized visions and dreams of the future I crave - I'm okay with the exact details being flushed out over time, but there are general dreams I will not give up. I've read thats more Ni then Ne?

It is but given the context of everything else, I think this can come from Fi if you see those dreams as identity, and ultimately everyone has goals and dreams.

Oh shit, thought of more things. I SUCK at finishing things - it takes crazy hard work for me to finish a project. I just get... bored and move on. Or procrastinate because other things are more interesting in the moment. But I'm also fairly academic and analytical - can INFP's be that? I find it very stimulating and when Im interested in a topic I want to learn EVERYTHING about it and understand it fully. And I hate when I have a mental problem that I can't solve. I will obsess.

INFPs can be analytical but it’s not your primary way of going about the world (nor is it for INFJs for that matter). Do you like it a lot in specific, lower-pressure contexts (say, academia)? That can be you exploring lower functions. It’s worth considering how you go about being analytical, and whether it seems more Te or Ti. The unsolved problem issue also depends on context, and learning everything can be Ne wanting all the information to fuel a very divergent thought process.

INFP 1,000: And I forgot the thing. I also orgionally started questioning because of my love for sensing things - I love physical beauty in home decor, nature, clothes, etc, and I love being in nature. When I was a teen and very stressed/unwell I overindulged in sensory things like sex/food/drinking/cutting, because it made me feel alive. In the same way now, engaging my senses in healthy ways makes me feel alive. But I do feel pretty crap at it. Which made me wonder if I had inferior Se.

OK so this isn’t directed at you but good lord does inferior Se get almost as much of a mythical out of proportion blow-out as dom Ni. A lot of inferior Se-credited unhealthy behaviors, while definitely present in dom Ni users, are also fairly universal. Namely, all the sensory things you mention will lead to endorphin rushes (hence the feeling alive - it’s brain chemistry) and all are pretty common coping mechanisms for depression, anxiety, or stress to the point that two of them are on the PHQ-9 depression screening. You would be hard pressed to find someone who’d never indulged in at least one under stress, and most people have indulged in several. This has been my PSA that typing based on inferior Se behaviors is a dangerous game for exactly that reason.

Anyway: overall, I see strong evidence for INFP and I’d look at enneagram 9 for some of the more conflict avoidant parts; perhaps more than 4 even though it could just be a strong 9 gut-fix as the second part of your tritype, and maybe a 5 head fix for the analytical stuff. Unless you have more details on the people who typed you INFJ I can’t really refute their arguments,but I see much more INFP for the reasons above.

Fi [Introverted Feeling]: Tate has a pretty skewed sense of morality, but he has strong morals nonetheless. He hates cheaters (e.g., Patrick, Ben), and he believes that “if you love someone, you should never hurt them” (“Pilot”). In his own twisted way, he stays true to this by any means necessary. His black-and-white morals are selective and only extend to certain people, however; Tate will do whatever it takes to protect those he loves and make them happy, albeit at the expense of strangers or people he doesn��t care about. This is evidenced by his willingness to kill Chad and Patrick and then rape Vivien in order to give Nora, whom he sees as his surrogate mother, what she wants: a baby. Tate doesn’t care who he has to chop to pieces (“Home Invasion”) or suffocate (“Smoldering Children”) in order to protect Violet, and even tries to kill an innocent guy in order to give Violet a “normal” boyfriend (“Afterbirth”). Although extreme, Tate is selfless in most of his endeavors; he would rather be trapped in the Murder House for eternity with Violet’s new boyfriend than to see her be lonely, ultimately living up to the standards which he pronounced in “Pilot.” Tate has an innate sense of justice, and will go to extremes to dole out punishment on those he believes deserve it, which includes setting Larry on fire for murdering his brother (“Smoldering Children”). Tate is often able to detect when people are being less than truthful, such as when Ben ends his therapy session early (“Bullshit. I don’t accept that” (“Home Invasion”)), and can’t stand it when people are fake. He is unwilling to give his mother any sort of satisfaction, and actively rebels against meeting her expectations of being the “perfect son” (“Smoldering Children”). Tate wears his heart on his sleeve, and is open about what he loves and hates, frequently telling Violet that he loves her, Constance and Larry that he hates them (“Open House”; “Smoldering Children”), etc., although he typically only expresses his innermost feelings to those he trusts implicitly (e.g., Violet on the beach (“Halloween: Part 1”)). Tate doesn’t always anticipate how people will react to him, initially scaring away Violet with his antics in the basement (“I thought you weren’t afraid of anything!” (“Pilot”)), as well as with his assumption that she would kill herself to be with him (“Smoldering Children”), and later unwittingly provoking Violet to really kill herself with his confession of love (“Piggy, Piggy”). He even fails to understand that Violet wouldn’t want him to kill somebody so that she could have a new boyfriend (“Afterbirth”).

Se [Extroverted Sensing]: Tate is impulsive at best, and utterly reckless at worst. He almost always acts before he thinks. Sometimes, this works to his advantage: he is able to act quickly to save Vivien and Violet from the reenactment of the murders (“Home Invasion”), as well as lead the dead kids who are after him away from Violet simply by running off (“Halloween: Part 2”). Most of the time, however, Tate’s inclination to take action and failure to think things through messes things up… big time. His gut reaction to retaliate against Constance while on drugs results in him burning Larry, committing mass murder, and ultimately getting himself killed. Tate waits until the last minute to tell Violet that she is actually dead, conjuring up a convoluted plan that includes knocking out her dad, killing an exterminator, and convincing her to “commit suicide” again - a plan which is destined to fail due to lack of preparation (“Smoldering Children”). For the most part, Tate believes in what is real and tangible; he is grounded, telling Violet that she can’t control the repercussions of her death forever, and that “it is what it is” (“Birth”). Tate also enjoys getting a physical reaction out of people, attempting to shock Ben with his words about Violet during his therapy session (“Home Invasion”), scaring Leah (“Pilot”), and attempting to scare Violet in jest (“Halloween: Part 1”). 

Ni [Introverted Intuition]: Tate fails to think very far ahead into the future, rarely considering the greater implications of events. He believes that he can both stay with Violet and protect her so long as she remains in the house; what he obviously does not foresee is Violet being a danger to herself (“Piggy, Piggy”). Whereas Violet wonders about what she will miss being trapped inside the house, Tate does not worry much about the future of the world (“Birth”). Nevertheless, Tate does occasionally enjoy infusing things with personal symbolism, telling Violet that he likes birds because “they can fly away when things get too crazy” (“Piggy, Piggy”), and allowing his imagination to run wild in his speech to Ben: “I prepare for the noble war. . . There's something about all that blood, man. I drown it. The Indians believed that blood holds all the bad spirits, and once a month in ceremonies they would cut themselves to let the spirits go free” (“Pilot”). Tate is sometimes able to infer things about people just by observing them (Se), understanding that a little girl in a Halloween costume reminds Ben of Violet (“Halloween: Part 1”), that Constance doesn’t really love Larry (“Smoldering Children”), etc. 

Te [Extroverted Thinking]: Tate is very blunt and matter-of-fact in his statements and evaluations of people, declaring early on in his therapy session with Ben that his mother is unfaithful (“Pilot”), and very explicitly stating the facts of what he believes to be true (also laced with Fi-anger) about Larry’s naivety and Constance’s duplicity at a family dinner: “And thank you for our new charade of our family. . . Lord, a big thank you for blinding the asshole that's doing my mother, so that he can't see what everybody knows: she doesn't really love him” (“Smoldering Children”). Tate wants immediate solutions and is quick to implement his plans, often resorting to murder and other heinous acts for the sake of efficiency: killing Chad and Patrick and raping Vivien to get Nora a baby; scaring Vivien to prevent her from taking Violet out of the house; knocking out Ben and killing the exterminator to stop Violet from finding out that she is dead; and attempting to kill Gabe so that Violet can have a “normal” boyfriend. At worst, Tate is prone to shouting out orders to get people to do what he wants: “Stand up!” (“Afterbirth”).

Enneagram [4w5]: Tate is emotional, melancholy, intense, and above all, cynical; declaring the world to be a “filthy goddamn horror show” (“Pilot”). He is very much focused on his identity as an individual, rejecting what is mainstream by society’s standards in pursuit of what he believes to be true and authentic; he has a disdain for the popular kids at school (“Pilot”) and idolizes high school dropouts (“Halloween: Part 2”). 

✘✘✘  Tate is almost universally typed as an INFP, and while I understand that this is often the type of the stereotypical, morose 90s teenager, Tate’s Se impulsivity is evident throughout the show. The only time he shows anything resembling Ne is during his rambling to Violet on the beach, but this could simply be Fi-rambling about his innermost thoughts and feelings, not necessarily Ne. And especially not enough Ne to erase all the Se he demonstrates throughout the show. 

I may have gone a bit overboard with my analysis on this one. Sorry about the length, but Tate is just such an Fi-dom, so there was a lot to say. Also happens to be one of my favorite characters of all time, so there’s that.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Edward Elric [ESFP]

(Written from the perspective of the 2003 anime. Brotherhood takes a different direction with Edward’s character, but he still has the same functions if I recall correctly. EDIT actually it’s likely BH Ed is an ENxP like people often say, and I just am more familiar with 03 Ed who I believe is a Se dom. Rewritten from my ESTP post.)

Extraverted Sensing (Se): Everything Ed does is rooted in wanting to influence external change. From his alchemy to his emotional reactions, Edward takes in sensory data and immediately acts on it. He’s good at improvising, and has a stylistic flair in everything he does. In general, theory by itself doesn’t have merit until it has concrete basis in reality. If he can’t confirm it with his senses, it’s not worth considering. He rarely thinks things through, and is overall blind to future consequences, needing Al to balance him out. Big picture thinking isn’t his strong suit until he’s forced to see how his lack of Ni can make him apathetic and ignorant to the world beyond himself, because he only ever cared about what was directly in front of him and what actions he can take in the here and now regardless of their implications down the line. This all sounds pretty negative, but the good thing about Ed’s Se is that it’s what motivates him to action. He sees a problem, sees someone suffering, and he gets things done, quick to offer his help, protection, or kindness. He has a playful and enthusiastic side, and with his Fi, an extremely kind and caring side.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Working hand-in-hand with his Se, his Fi fuels his intense emotional reactions. He has an opinion on everything, and is usually unyielding in his likes and dislikes. He makes harsh judgements on his observations based on his preferences and morals. He’s socially awkward with emotions and doesn’t care what others think of him, but underneath his cold exterior is someone who is very sensitive to things that upset who he is and what he believes. His observations, after reacting with Se, are filtered through his personal experiences which he sees and asserts as fact (Te). Like many Fi-aux characters, a lot of his character development resides in him reevaluating his moral code and learning to use it more maturely. A lot of his conflict is internal. Weighing moral choices, analyzing and stewing in his feelings, and making judgements about a moral “truth” to humanity are all elements to his personality. Alchemy is extremely important to him, meaning he’s sensitive to anyone who disregards its laws or uses it for reasons he doesn’t agree with.

Extraverted Thinking (Te): He’s goal-oriented, a creative problem-solver, and ambitious. Any time Ed acts warm towards another person or puts on a facade for others, it’s to achieve something, or used to keep himself at peace. He’s not a words person; he’s an actions person. He doesn’t talk about his feelings; he acts on them or acts out of character (though he will talk after he’s retreated for a while, typical of a Fi-user). He asserts his Fi judgements as factual, is arrogant and argumentative, and is defensive toward outer influences and control. He sees the Te perspective as cold and cruel, and though he tries to act like a T-user who is led by his brain over his heart, he actually thinks purely with what he’s feeling and defends it with immature Te. He wants to be taken seriously, but when his moral code is on the line, he dismisses the harsh reality. “If that’s what being an adult is, then I’m never growing up!”

Introverted Intuition (Ni): As mentioned, big picture thinking isn’t Ed’s strong suit. He’d rather deal with the here-and-now with Ni working in the background to keep his actions focused. He has all the conviction of a Ni user. However, the function is overall immature and leads to Se overcompensating. Him butting heads with Mustang has to do with Ed’s aux-Fi and inf-Ni disagreeing with the former’s Ni-Te approach (“lazy, immoral bastard” in terms of Mustang being an inferior Se, and a realistic and goal-oriented aux-Te). In Conqueror of Shamballa, he’s in the grip of inferior Ni and becomes pessimistic, loses his passion, and is out of touch with reality. At his worst in general, he becomes gloomy and full of self-doubt and seems to give up hope for the future. He can make connections between events to figure out what’s going on, but reading between the lines as opposed to seeing what’s in front of him isn’t his natural setting. (He doesn’t make wild N connections naturally, without force or conscious effort. He gathers facts with Se and Te. He figured out what Tucker had done before the Reveal to the audience, because he had been building up concrete facts to make a conclusion). By the end of the series, he’s able to think deeply about what he’s learned. To reflect on humanity and what his life means.

Control Ch. 6 (NSFW)

You adjust the visor, trying to protect you face from the sun. It’s so bright it looks like the green of the grass turned into a mat shade of yellow.

“Remember to keep your arms steady but your hips a little loose.”

“Like this?”

“Yes. Oh, and don’t use your palm, try to grab it with your fingers.”  Jumin instructs you, watching intently as you focus and wiggle your hips. “Very good. Now hit it.”

You two watch as the ball falls down a curve and rolls slowly till it stops very far from the hole.

“Not bad for a beginner.”

“Too bad for such a critical teacher like you, going all soft on me.” You both chuckle and he narrow his eyes at you.

“I don’t expect you to be a great golf player in your first try. But… if the matter is softness, I can always be tougher on you.”

“How so?” you smirk teasingly, and he comes closer.

“I can show you no mercy and take that ball to the hole in less than 3 putts.” He says, adjusting his position and preparing to do his move. You two watch as the ball he putted flies way further than yours.

“Well played, I must admit. But what a coward, showing no mercy on this poor beginner…” you pout. And he laughs, wrapping an arm around you and bringing you closer.

“I suppose you can say I’m trying to show off a little. Now, your turn. Do it like you did before.”

You go to the ball, repositioning yourself the way Jumin taught you. But before you try to putt, you feel his arms covering yours, and his chest pressing against your back. He places a hand in your thigh.

“Remember to keep your legs in a parallel position.” His hands go on top of yours, gripping your fingers along the club. “Focus, MC… and… hit it.” He leads your movements, like the two of you are one player. “Very good.”

“Thanks. I… think I got it, you can let me go now.” You say wiggling your shoulder when you feel his chin leaning on it.

“Hum… I think I can provide much better lessons if we stay like this.” He leans his chin on your shoulder, and you both chuckle. “One more time, but slower now.”

“One more time, faster now, MC.” Seven moves backwards while your left hand hits his right, you begin a sequel of strikes. Left, right, left, right, crossed left! “Good girl! Faster!” you repeat the sequel of movements. “Now kick!”

“Isn’t this boxing?”

“Well, yeah… but neither of us are professional boxers, so give me a kick!” you kick his left hand. “Good girl! That was amazing, MC!”

You lean your hands on your knees, panting and letting the sweat droplets fall from your hair, then you look at Seven, who offers you his squeezer of water, that instead of taking a sip, you use it to splash water on your face as you sit on the mat, panting heavily. Seven sits beside you and you both chuckle breathlessly.

“Whew… I’m pretty rusty too, huh?” he says, plopping in the mat. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I’m pretty good, actually.”

“Yeah, I knew you would. Sometimes all we need is to punch some stuff to release stress.”

“Yes, when you call me to invite me to some sparring, I… have no idea it was exactly what I needed… I… been saying this too much lately, but thanks, Seven.”

“It’s fine. So… how are things with the internship?” should you mention what happened to Jumin the other day? Nah, it would look like you’re complaining and whining, and you don’t want to sound ungrateful to the guy who got you this internship, in the first place.

“It’s good.”

“Is Jumin giving you a hard time?”

“Don’t talk about Jumin, Seven.” You don’t really need other people to remind you of him, last days have been filled with thoughts of him. Sweet memories like the golf lesson alternating to when you two left, with you leaving his office and fighting your tears. Maybe there was a time you actually considered nothing of that was real, you weren’t in love for him, you were just pretending to Care for him in order to help somebody who desperately needed love and understanding, but… no, you’ve loved him. You still do, matter of fact. And how do you know that? Because of the fucking memories of the golf lesson, and how you would give everything to go back to those days.

Jumin knows there’s no turning back. Not on what you’ve done, and definitely not on what he said the last time you saw each other. He wasn’t fine with any of this, but if there was a little glimpse of comfort, it was on the fact he was pretty sure you were a cold woman acting like he was an unsatisfied client breaking a contract with you. But apparently, you were hurt too, as much as he was. And this pain is killing him, what could it have been doing to you?

He replayed that last arguing so much in his mind it’s giving him a headache. Your shocked eyes when he asked you about paying for the wedding dress with your filthy money. A filthy money you were willing to give up on when you two would get married. Ugh… you really were studying the exact moment to tell him about the domming ordeal, weren’t you? What on his actions could have possibly made you hold back for so long?

Elizabeth the 3rd finds her way to his lap, and he caresses her softly, rubbing her ears gently like you used to do. And though Jumin knows now she’s just a cat, she can’t know how complicated things got, he swears she’s suffering too and missing you,or what you pretended to be in front of them... maybe you weren’t pretending? You were really scared of his reaction? But he was changing for you, wasn’t he really worthy of, at least, the benefit of the doubt? Were you worthy of the benefit of the doubt? Ugh… see? Too many complicated thoughts a cat could never understand. Not even he understands, he just misses… the old days. And there’s no turning back.

“Zen would be a good power sub, don’t you agree?” he asks as you jab his hand again.

“Oh my God… no, we’re not doing this, Seven!”

“Ah, come on! Don’t tell me you’ve never thought of us from this point of view…”

“I haven’t. I’m a professional, I would never take this out of the privates of my dungeon. But… I… thought how it would be if I tell the other RFA members about it.”

“Oh… yeah, that’s interesting too. But Zen being the power sub he probably is… would consider paying for a session after he finds out.”

“Oh… not trying to be a bitch, but Zen needs to get top notch roles in at least 3 or 4 musicals to afford one of my sessions…”

“Oh wow! If it is like this to Zen, just imagine to our poor little M Yoosung. Boy will never make his fantasies come true…”

“Yeah. Guess there are only two people in this group able to afford it, but one of them hates me and the other one is his best friend, who probably hates me as well.”

“What about me? I’m rich too!”

“Oh… and are you interested in one of my sessions, Seven?” you smirk, and he scratches the back of his head, blushing. “Kinky pervert!” you hit him lightly on his arm. “And here I was thinking you were a good catholic boy, tsk tsk…”

“You don’t know anything about me, MC.” He says, holding your wrist. “And if I may say, that’s the problem with people in your field, you label people too much.”

“The…  BDSM field?”

“No, the publicity field. Aren’t you getting a degree in publicity?” he smirks, Oh… what was the last time somebody remembered about this other job? Well, probably was with Jumin, but… “You label people in order to put them in groups so you’ll know to who you sell it, correct? Well, there are those people who you can’t really predict their patterns.”

“And you are one of those people?”

“Maybe. In the publicity and in the BDSM field. So… watch out for what you’re trying to sell it, you’ll never know if I want to buy it, at least not in the conditions you’re offering me.” Is he… is he flirting? Nah, it’s Seven! He can’t be really flirting at such a witty and provocative way, he’s too goofy for this, isn’t he?

“And what would be your conditions, then?” you place your hands on your hips.

“Hum… I’m not sure if I should talk about this when you’re still hooked on… Elly’s owner.”

“I’m not hooked on Jumin!” shit! You said his name again!

“Are you sure?” he asks, and you don’t really want to answer, so you start jabbing him again. Left, right, left, right, crossed left, uppercut, knock out. He falls with his back on the mat.

“Oh my God, Seven! I’m so sorry! I… I lost control, I…” once again, here you are hurting someone who has nothing to do with this just because one particular name has been brought up. It happened with your sub that time, and now it happened to your friend. How come Jumin has so much power over you even when he’s not around? “Ugh, I’m so stupid, I… Seven?” he looks at you and wipes the little trail of blood rolling from his upper lip to his chin, then he smiles.

“You have a good left.” He chuckles but immediately winces at the pain.

“Here, let me help you with your glasses.” You hold his arm and help him shift to a sitting position, taking his glasses off the mat and putting in his face.

He holds your wrist again, but not to stop you like he did before, is more like… he’s pulling you closer. His other hand holds your forearm as he brings his face closer to yours. Then you just feel the taste of the blood from his lips in your own, invading your mouth to be vanished by his tongue. He was flirting with you, here’s your answer, and it’s coming in the form of a very steamy kiss.

“Seven? I…” he kneels before you without breaking the kiss wrapping his arms around your waist. And you try to make a motion to pull him away placing a hand in his shoulder, but as he trails his lips down your jaw and nips it, whimpering, your hand balls into a fist, grasping his shirt as you let out a low moan.

Before you even know, he makes you straddle him and bites your neck, you tighten the grip on his hair, moaning. His hand slips to inside your shorts as his mouth reaches the cleavage of your top.

“Se-Seven, I…”

“Shhh… let yourself go, MC. When was the last time you had fun? No fighting for power, no worries about being in charge, just… having… fun?” he asks as he brushes the fabric of your underwear aside and slip one finger inside you, making you arch your back in response.

“I… nnnng, I…” you interrupt yourself taking your mouth to meet his again, sucking in the wound on his lip, making him whimper in pain and pleasure as his finger moves to your clit, drawing circles. Seven swallows each one of your moans, dwelling in the feelings you’re spreading to his whole body. And when you palm his erection and make him lay on his back, you know there is no turning back on what’s about to happen.

The two of you ended in your bed that afternoon. Now both of you staring at the ceiling. What is he thinking? You’ve always knew this was a very regular question when it comes to him, but right now, this is the first time you actually want an answer. What is he thinking? What are you thinking?
