I made Cait, Preston, X6-88 and a human version of Ada. Instead of a parrot, X6 gets an Institute crow.
I made MacCready here !

Something Independent (At The Precipice Of Something New XXXVI)
Continuing tracking the so-called Mechanist, Paladin Danse, Scribe Haylen, and Knight Rhys tentatively follow the unusual robot called Ada to the General Atomics Factory? Tensions high with the Railroad, Nora receives less than thrilling news about the logistics behind finding and latching onto a Courser signal? The Minutemen retake the Castle? Phase Three going into smooth implementation, Jacqueline Spencer is given something of a 'break' to coach one of the teams of Institute kids in the end of term 'robot wars?' With help from Piper, Cait, and Vadim, MacCready finally takes out Winlock and Barnes?
It's been a little while, but it's here now! Read it on AO3, ff.net, and/or wattpad!!!

Hai could I get fo4 complete reaction to the sole survivor being very big on giving praise? Like they're constantly complementing the companions but not in an overbearing way :) thank uuu
FO4 Companions reacting to the Sole Survivor's praise:
Cait
At first, she’s incredibly suspicious. Compliments? From someone who doesn’t want anything? She’s waiting for the catch.
Once she realises it’s genuine, she gets flustered and awkward, brushing off praise with a “Yeah, yeah, don’t go getting soft on me.” But she starts subtly craving it.
Eventually, she starts preening a bit when she hears it, standing a little taller. “Damn right I’m good at this,” she’ll say, with a small but proud smile.
Codsworth
Absolutely adores it. He lives to serve, and knowing Sole appreciates him fills him with robotic joy.
“Oh, you are too kind! I do try my best, of course!” He starts adding a little flourish when serving them tea, trying to impress them.
Might even get a little smug when others don’t get as much praise. “Ah, not everyone can be as meticulous as yours truly!”
Curie
Delighted and fascinated by Sole’s positivity, especially when directed at her scientific skills.
“Oh! You really think my work is amazing? That is… oh, you make me blush!” She absorbs every word like a sponge, eager to impress them further.
Over time, she starts paying the praise forward, complimenting others in the group in an adorable, awkward way: “Yes, Cait, you… hit that man so well! Such force!”
Paladin Danse
Completely unsure of how to process it at first. Praise was always tied to performance in the Brotherhood, not simple appreciation.
Starts standing up straighter, subtly shifting into parade rest every time he is praised. “That’s… good to hear, soldier.”
He may not say it, but it means something to him. Eventually, he starts seeking approval in small ways, hoping to get an extra “Outstanding work” when he pulls off something impressive.
Deacon
Smug as hell about it at first. “Oh, stop it, you charmer, you’ll make a spy blush.”
But deep down? It gets to him. Compliments aren’t something he gets often—especially not genuine ones.
He starts responding more sincerely over time, quietly muttering, “Y’know, you’re not too bad yourself.” That’s Deacon for I’m touched beyond words.
Dogmeat
Is a dog. Therefore, absolutely loves the praise and thrives on it.
Tail-wagging intensifies with every “Good boy!” until he’s practically vibrating.
Starts bringing the Sole Survivor even more random junk from the wasteland, tail wagging proudly as he receives his due recognition.
Gage
At first? Suspicious as hell. Compliments in Nuka-World usually meant someone wanted something.
Eventually, he starts accepting them at face value, though he plays it cool: “Yeah, well, I am pretty damn good at what I do.”
But if he ever hears a genuine “I trust you,” that’s it. That’s the moment he realises he’s actually loyal to them, no strings attached.
John Hancock
Drinks it up like the finest chems. “Oh, you really do know how to sweet-talk a ghoul.”
Starts playfully fishing for them. “I dunno, was that a badass move or the most badass move?”
But after a while, he stops playing—he just enjoys hearing them say nice things. It reminds him that he’s worth appreciating.
Robert MacCready
At first? Incredibly awkward. “Uh… thanks? I guess?” He’s not used to compliments that aren’t sarcastic.
Eventually, he starts mumbling a quiet “Thanks” and actually appreciating it. He never realised how much he craved validation.
If they ever tell him he’s a great dad? That’s it. He’s done. Might actually tear up.
Nick Valentine
Smirks at first, taking it in stride. “Careful, kid. A fella might start thinkin’ you like having him around.”
But deep down? It means a hell of a lot. People don’t usually appreciate him as more than an old synth detective.
Eventually, he starts throwing it right back. “Well, you’re not half bad yourself, partner.” And from him, that’s high praise.
Piper Wright
Blushes furiously at first, brushing it off. “Pfft, come on, you’re making me sound cooler than I am.”
Eventually, though? She starts believing it. Starts walking with a bit more confidence, feeling like she is as capable as they say she is.
She starts writing about them in a new way—not just as a legend, but as a genuinely good person.
Preston Garvey
Blinks the first time they compliment him, looking genuinely surprised. “You really mean that?”
He’s so used to being the one lifting everyone else up—it takes him a while to accept that someone wants to do the same for him.
Eventually, he starts smiling more. “Thanks, General. That means a lot.” And it really, really does.
Strong
Confused at first. Why is human saying nice things? What is this strange behavior?
Eventually, decides it is a human battle custom and accepts it. “YES. STRONG IS GOOD SMASHER.”
Might even start attempting his own version of praise: “HUMAN… IS GOOD TOO. NOT AS STRONG AS STRONG. BUT GOOD.”
X6-88
Is initially just... silent. He doesn’t know how to react. Compliments aren’t part of his programming.
Eventually, he just nods at them. “Noted.” But his tone softens over time.
He never outright asks for it, but if they ever stop praising him? He might just subtly start working harder for it.
Ada
Initially confused but appreciative. “That is… unexpected. Most humans do not take the time to compliment machines.”
Over time, she begins to recognise it as genuine appreciation and responds in kind. “Your leadership is commendable. I am… grateful to be part of this.”
Though she may not have emotions like a human, her tone becomes just a touch warmer when speaking to Sole, like she’s learning what it means to feel valued.
Automatron
Default programmed response: “Thank you for your feedback.”
But if they keep it up, the bot might start adapting its speech patterns. “Analysis: Positive reinforcement detected. Conclusion: You are… kind.”
If modified with a personality matrix, the bot might get cocky. “Yes, yes, I am the pinnacle of engineering excellence. Carry on, human.”
Old Longfellow
Grumbles about it at first. “Damn fool, ain't no need to butter me up. Just doin’ what I always done.”
But over time, he starts getting used to it. Starts looking forward to Sole’s words, even if he won’t admit it.
The real moment of breakthrough? When he finally mutters, “Heh. Y’ain’t so bad yourself, kid.” That’s Longfellow for I respect the hell outta you.
Porter Gage
At first? Suspicious as hell. Compliments? That ain't how the real world works. “Yeah, yeah, what angle you workin’, boss?”
But once he realises Sole is just… like that, he starts soaking it in. “Damn. Not used to hearin’ that kinda thing. Feels… nice, I guess.”
Eventually, he starts giving them a nod of approval in return. “Gotta say, boss—you got a way of makin’ folks wanna follow ya. Guess I picked the right side after all.”

Fallout 4 companion birthday headcanons
Codsworth- he's the most easy to figure out just using math and estimation. Nora/Nate says that you got him to help out now that Shaun is born, the box is still in your laundry room, and Shaun is less than a year old. Shaun is also in a swaddle in his crib, most doctors agree that you should stop swaddling with the arms tucked in when the baby has enough strength to move their arms, around 2 months. So we'll say Shaun is 2 months old. So that means Codsworth was unboxed and activated for the first time around August in 2077. So let's say August 23rd, meaning he's exactly 2 months old when the bombs drop.
Piper- April 24th, the day the first newspaper was published in Boston by John Campbell, The Boston Newsletter.
MacCready- November 11th, Veterans' Day, ironic, considering the lie he told his wife that he could never reveal was false.
Preston- July 4th, US American Independence Day.
Nick- February 14th, Valentines Day.
Hancock- January 23rd, the birthday of the historical John Hancock.
X6-88- June 6th. D-Day, or the day the Allied armies invaded Normandy in World War 2 in what would become the largest amphibious invasion in military history.
Strong- April 23rd. Shakespeare's birthday.
Curie- November 7th, Maria Skłodowska Curie's birthday. Though in all fairness I think she is activated the day the bombs dropped, canonically, but she can celebrate her birthday whenever she pleases, and I feel like given her name, she'd want to celebrate on Maria Skłodowska's birthday.
Cait- December 6th, Irish Independence Day.
Danse- April 2nd. This is the birthday of King Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire, who created the rank of Paladin for his court. Paladins, also called the Twelve Peers, were the foremost members of the court.
Deacon- ???. Deacon tells a different story for his date of birth every time he's asked. He might not even remember what his birthday is, if he knew it at all. Though the Railroad gives him a little party on Christmas, December 25th, which is acceptable to him.
Dogmeat- August 26th, International Dog Day. Also if you Google International Dog Day, you get a fun Google Doodle.
Gage- May 1st, the day Nuka World was first opened.
Ada- November 6th. The day Alexa was created.
Longfellow- September 14th, the day the first Lighthouse was built in US America on Little Brewster Island in the Boston Harbor.

Every Fallout 4 Companion’s Approximate Birth Year (Part 3/3)
CVRIE — 2076
I assume Miss Nannies went out of production when the world exploded.
Codsworth — 2077
His box is still in your house during the prologue.
He also mentions enjoying the “months” he’s spent with you, though he might mean since Shaun was born.
Nick — 2175
We know it was over a century ago, but it can’t have been too far prior to the Gen 3 rollout around 2227.
I think Nick is the older brother, because it makes sense to start by creating a synth with stored personalities before trying to make one that develops a personality autonomously.
Longfellow — 2223
This man is only in his SIXTIES, they are LYING TO YOU
The Children of Atom were full-fledged on the Island when Longfellow was young. Confessor Cromwell is the one who sent them to Maine.
But he couldn’t have become Confessor until the mid-2250s, because he’s only FORTY-FOUR in Fallout 3, and he had a background as a trader before that! AND there still had to be time for the Children to travel all the way to Maine.
So Longfellow was born in the twenties, had his sad backstory in the fifties, and is about 65 in Fallout 4.
Strong — 2230
Strong could have been anyone, but I think he was either a divorced dad who would’ve been an accountant in another life, or just Mayor McDonough.
Hancock — 2235
Is 53-year-old Hancock controversial? Let me cook.
There’s support for the theory that synth McDonough was created before the election in 2282. We can assume the human had full gray hair at that point, because synths don’t go gray. So he was probably in his fifties at least.
John was younger, but he can’t have been that much younger. So he was probably ghoulified in his late forties.
Deacon — 2245
If you accept the John D. theory, this does put him a little on the young side, but it fits.
Gage — 2251
There’s not much backstory from his teens up to 2286, and I’m tempted to believe it was a shorter period. But he has late-thirties eyes.
…Eye.
Cait — 2260
Her parents helpfully drew the line at child trafficking, so we have a good idea of her age. She was 18 when she went into slavery and about 23 when she left.
Some time later, she spent about three years at the Combat Zone. Assuming some buffer room between the two periods, I put her at 27 years.
Danse — 2261
He’d have lived in the Institute for awhile, then Rivet City, then the Brotherhood.
He was already a paladin in 2277, but Maxson says it took him “many years” to become one.
Preston — 2262
I don’t know what it is about him that screams 25-year-old to me.
He joined the Minutemen at 17, then had “a few good years” before 2282 when Becker died.
MacCready — 2264
He was twelve in August 2277, and at that point he’d been mayor for three years.
He became mayor at ten. So he’s got to be nearly thirteen at the start of Fallout 3, which would make him 23 in Fallout 4.
Piper — 2266
Nat seems 13 to me.
If Piper is old enough to have taken care of her as a baby, but not old enough to have significant memories of their mother, 21 sounds about wright.
Curie — 2277
Glory escaped the Institute in 2280, and she and G5 had known each other for some time before that.
Ada — 2281
Jackson seems to have created her reasonably recently.
Dogmeat IV — 2285
I think he is ouppy:)
X6-88 — 2287.
Yeah, I said it.
This man thinks he’s so evil but he’s an actual baby.
My reasoning is that he wishes he had been there to see the University Point massacre in 2286, but apparently wasn’t.
It makes the game so much funnier.
If he was born earlier in the year, he could have been trained in time for the Kellogg flashback.

If I was Hancock me and the other companions would have been fighting cause everyone has something to say about how awful Goodneigbor. One of you was literally living there cause he’s a broke bitch. One was living in a raider shit hole, half of y’all don’t live anywhere or in bigotry town and then there’s fucking Strong.
Like at least Goodneighbor is tight knit and the drugs are free like sorry your house/settlement is boring me and Hancock are gonna go get fucked up and find a dead historical figure’s old fit for me this time.

Really paying attention to how Gage speaks during his affinity checks and how it slowly evolves into something deeper while remaining ambiguous enough for people to be able to friend zone him without it seeming weird is so nice to see. (I mean, it goes for the rest of the companions, but like - no, actually, Preston is gay af for the sosu, and he wants you to know).
Anyway. How Gage keeps it all close to his chest, only allowing so much to slip out, enough to give sosu an edge, a glimpse behind the walls put up because Gage has been hurt so much. But sosu putting his foot into that door to Gage's heart.
It's so fucking gay.

How would the companions (minus longfellow) act with a Deaf/HOH Sole Survivor ?
I made this because silly and my sole survivor is half deaf :))
Preston
Preston already has a concept of signed gestures and hearing loss, from trying to communicate around artillery or in battle. He’s even met Deaf/HOH settlers before, but never before has he travelled with someone who couldn’t hear. It takes him a bit to get the hang of communication, learning conversational signs from Sole and making sure he’s in clear view when he talks if they lip read. That being said, it doesn’t change much, he still sees them as that leadership role the minuteman need. He ends up getting Sole to teach passing minutemen signs so they can communicate or trying to teach them all himself once he becomes more fluent.
Deacon
He’s hesitant at first, after all if you can’t hear yourself you gotta be loud as all hell. When Sole proves they can be stealthy though, he changes his tune. They both sign often to keep conversations more secretive and he’ll act as ‘interpreter’ on missions so he can pass by with less attention.
Hancock
Hancock has DEFINITELY met a Deaf traveler before, I mean it’s Goodneighbor. I think he would communicate with writing things, whether on dirt or walls or any available paper. Now that he’s traveling with Sole though, he’s trying to learn so he can communicate easier with anyone passing through Goodneighbor. (Though I think he’s definitely the guy who wants to learn curses and phallic words first).
Strong
He surprisingly doesn’t immediately hate them for it. But he will get frustrated when Sole don’t respond. he eventually figures out that they’ve been signing to him and their responses are all half guesses. He thinks about leaving but then remembers that they’ve lived this long without hearing ANYTHING (this is untrue, you may be able to hear something but he doesn’t know that). So he stays with Sole a bit longer, relying on gestures and lip reading if they can. They both learn that his big hands don’t make great signing and he gives up on learning anything expressive and slowing learns receptively by watching them.
Curie
Curie finds it fascinating, but not surprising that Sole can survive out here. She likes watching them and studying how they function in the world without hearing. When she’s still a nanny bot she very easily learns receptive sign, but when she gets her new body she’s ecstatic to use it for herself and quickly takes to signing back to Sole. She’s a quick stumbling kind of signer though so she can be hard to understand.
Cait
Cait and Tommy are super fucking confused when the person who killed every raider in the combat zone doesn’t respond at first. Her first impression is that they were stupid or playing a joke, she’s never met a Deaf person before. When she and Sole first travel together she finds the ‘what’s, ‘huh’s, confused faces, and or lack of responses extremely annoying. As they travel together though and she starts to realize they really view her as a person she’ll apologize. She never really gets good at sign but she’ll sign small things to you and struggle to understand when Sole signs back.
Maccready
This guy also already has a concept of sign. But not conversational in the slightest, still, he takes to it like a duck on water. He’s probably ending up the easiest to sign to (other than like Nick) because he ends up focusing on learning sign for like a few months straight and is using it constantly after. He does tell Sole that he wants to teach Duncan when he sees him again or get word passed on to his old home since it could prove useful to Deaf and hearing kids.
Gage
He’s a bit confused at first, and in all honesty considers leaving them in that ratty ass bumper car room, but he remembers that they need a new overboss and it’s not like they haven’t had people with hearing loss in the raiders gangs before. He finds most of the things they do pretty normal, like lipreading and being extra vigilant, hearing can be hard, and words muddle together, it only makes sense that you’d watch someone’s mouth to know what they’re saying- wait that’s not normal? Huh, maybe the years of explosions and gunfire are getting to him.
He does end up learning sign and finds it a lot easier then verbal communication
Nick
Nick is already fluent, he knows what Deaf people are from his past memories. He doesn’t even realize he knows sign until him and Sole are talking and he ends up enjoying travelling with them. Nothing much really changed about your relationship. The Kellogg case does become more difficult since they can’t hear him in the memory den
Codsworth
He was with Sole pre war and due to his programming he already understands signing but can’t sign back. He mostly just points and stuff.
Piper
Thank god for Piper. Due to the speaker entrance chances are Sole wouldn’t get into Diamond City unassisted. But with Piper’s scheme they both got in with ease. She realizes there’s something up immediately and when Sole tells her about their hearing she immediately tries an interview. This of course does not go well. As they travel together she tries to pick up sign but never gets good at it. One thing Sole misses out on are her yap sessions. Don’t get me wrong, she still has them, but they both know that there’s no way in hell that Sole is understanding most of what she’s saying.
Dogmeat
Honestly, he probably won’t notice at first, he protects Sole the same and unless they’re nonverbal he’s probably gonna take awhile. He might just think they’re quiet. After some time though Dogmeat will start listening to and watching for signed command and instead of baking to alert them he’ll paw at their foot or jump and try to catch their attention if he’s too far away and still in view. They both work out pretty well, he’s a good dog.
Ada
Ada has never met a Deaf person and Sole cannot read Ada’s lips so it’s a struggle. They eventually get a similar relationship to the one Sole would have with Strong.
X6-88
What the fuck is this hand language, why is Father not like this? How is this person still alive? So many questions. He’s never met a Deaf person and no one’s told him, they’ve had broken synths who can’t hear, is that the same? He asks a lot of questions, some uncomfortable or kind of rude and honestly sucks at first, but once he gets to know them and realize he’s getting closer to Sole, he apologizes and tones it down. He ends up taking to sign pretty well and realizes how useful it is in day to day as well as battle. He ends up acting as an interpreter if Sole lets him.
Danse
At first he thinks they aren’t listening on purpose, then realizes what’s actually going on. He’s never met a Deaf traveler. Being already bad with people this makes him anxious, which comes off as aggression, but he realizes how much easier it is to be around them. He doesn’t take part in small talk and takes to sign pretty well. Similar to X6-88 he’ll probably ask a lot of questions, some being a bit rude. Though, at least he’ll have shame when asking these at least.
