why atty jung woo-jin is so important to me (alt title: why I hope the titular good partner includes jung woo-jin too, alt title @haraxvati apologies for workplace romance talk)

If you were in fandom spaces during Sherlock, you know that people went crazy for the deductions, for how they were delivered by Sherlock on the show. Who is a terrible person to most of the people around him! The surface admiration fans feel is for the way he works and not what he does for his friends (we’re talking normal human reciprocity and not lifesaving sorts of things).

So little of romance is devoted to the opposite - women who are good at tough, unsympathetic jobs and are unapologetic about it. If you were ever a woman in law enforcement, litigation or any other job coded to be aggressive or dominant, you’d find no shortage of gatekeeping men telling you how to do your job right, and there is no pleasing anyone in this.

How to speak, how to lower your pitch, what to wear, what NOT to wear, what sort of concessions you should give to the boys in club if you want to be in the club, what sort NOT to give so you don’t look like a chump. Maybe it’s better now than it used to be. Maybe some spaces are better than others. But the outcome was the same - you never win, and someone always shifts the goalposts when you’re done. You’re too sexy, you’re not sexy enough, your voice is annoying, you’re mousy, you’re loud, you’re fancy, you’re too articulate, you’re no fun, you’re a little too much and God forbid you get angry, because no one likes an angry woman.

We don’t see this sort of criticism on the show, because Cha Eun-gyeong is successful, but it’s never far from the minds of small men, be it her boss or the lawyer her husband seeks out. And we don’t have to see more of it - her husband, who by all rights should be proud of her achievements and hard-earned reputation, weaponises her work as the reason she is no longer a mother or a woman in his eyes. Who needs to hear from a shitty colleague when the call’s coming from inside the house? He hates her success, he hates that he owes his own success to her in part at least. It’s no surprise that his girlfriend is not a fellow doctor or someone from an allied or parallel position to him - she is in an admin position subordinate to Eun-gyeong. I don’t say this to denigrate admin positions, but to point out the predictability of men like him, whose anger at not being the centre of a woman’s universe is never far from the surface.

But then there’s Jung Woo-jin, who admires Atty Cha because of all the traits that make her a good lawyer. He points out to Han Yuri that she started out doing a tough job in a time few women took it on, that she took risks and was courageous in her representation of her clients. He admires her and yes, he loves her all the more for it.

If you’re asking me why it matters what a man feels about Atty Cha’s job, frankly I don’t think it does! She’s the fulcrum of her own universe. She’s never needed anyone’s approval to do what she felt was right. But I think it bears pointing out that this is a lonely job. Clients need to be handled and protected, opposing counsel are to be suspected, and judges are to be feared. There’s at least three fronts of conflict, and here is Cha Eun-gyeong, handling it all with infinite grace. And it’s great that she can do it all, but it’d also be great if the narrative could be different, for once; if she could have friends, even lovers, potentially, who love her for all of who she is, and not just the pieces of her that are useful. It’s a fantasy, yes, but a type so specific and so underserved that it had to have been written by a woman in corporate, if not a woman in litigation.

Cha Eun-gyeong is a very good lawyer, a woman who at partner level is still working her ass off to stay at the top, and Jung Woo-jin sees that; he sees HER, and the things that make her a good lawyer are indivisible from her as a person, because they are for Cha Eun-gyeong. Which is why his admiration for her is also indivisible from his love, and it’s also why he thinks nothing of it and Han Yuri catches on immediately. Because he can’t see it, but everyone else can.

But beyond that, for me it’s the moment he bodily puts himself between the CEO (yet another man waiting for her to fail) and Cha Eun-gyeong. I think it’s easy to convey admiration privately, because you don’t lose capital from that. It’s another thing to stand up for a colleague publicly. To your CEO no less, and in front of all your other colleagues, at a time of great personal crisis for Cha Eun-gyeong. (To your CEO who is also your father, no less!). It’s telling that this unassuming man who tends to smooth ruffled feathers does not appeal to his father-boss’s ego or supplicate to secure a temporary detente; what he makes is a threat that the words being uttered are defamatory, a polite suggestion that there will be consequences for careless words, and his father absolutely picks up on it. He may pay a price for it yet, going by the conversation he has later with his father.

I don’t know why this fantasy appeals more than the other, but I think it’s in the instinctive nature of it on both sides. It’s in the way Cha Eun-gyeong - who actively distances him from her feelings, who does not open up to him by design - allows him to act as her vanguard in a deeply vulnerable moment, which in itself is an entitlement she has. It’s food for thought, a glimpse into this bond that has outlasted her marriage.

Synopsis: When the door to another world opens, demons exist there. Ku San Young is possessed by one of those demons. Yeom Hae Sang can see the demon which has possessed Ku San Young. They try to figure out the truth behind the mysterious deaths related to the five sacred objects. Ku San Young is busy working part-time during the day and studying to become a low-ranking public officer at night. One day, she receives some articles left behind by her late father. Since then, mysterious deaths take place around her. She also finds herself slowly changing. Yeom Hae Sang comes from a rich background. He teaches Korean folklore at a university. Since he was a child, he has had the special ability to see demons in this world. He even saw his mother killed by a demon in front of him when he was young. Yeom Hae Sang meets Ku San Young and he faces the demon which killed his mother. Lee Hong Sae is a lieutenant in the violent crimes investigation team. What do we think?

I am a nomad in hunt for good thrillers/horrors/crime stories so when I first heard news of all these genres combined, that too as a kdrama - yeah, well I panicked. Not to mention I have been a fan of Kim Eun-hee since Signal so I sat down for a feast with this one. The casting also had me starry eyed and the trailer (I mean, you could call it a teaser too) was sufficiently intriguing, even border lining my restlessness to decipher what that ominous, dark hue in the cinematography was hiding.

I am two episodes in and I have more questions than answers which is obviously alright because it's only two episodes. In fact, I had no answer at all by the end of the first episode. As for the opening, it was fairly okay. We get the basic premise of what's going on – the spirits, there is something enigmatic going on with Gu Sanyeong (or Ku San Yeong) and the spirit latching onto her. There is a lot of folklore involved which is where Professor Yeom comes into play. He excels in being resigned to his cursed fate of being able to see supernaturals and he has made peace with the fact that no one would believe him. But like a true clairvoyant and a good person, he does what he could to alert the police when he foresees the shadow which tails death. He falls into a rather helpless situation too until finally, Gu Sanyeong plays her part, aware of what danger the spirit latched to her poses.

The show in itself is pretty dark, literally and cinematically. Darkness makes it way to every scene, whether through dark outfits of our leads or the significance given to mirrors and shadows, both of which things hold a certain significance in the spiritual world. There are no big jump scares as of yet, in fact, the ghost moves likes a sly shadow to its destination and doorways are a key to its entrance.

Now to the main question: is it a watch or a pass?

For audience who like thrillers, horrors mixed with crime, this is surely a watch. With the acknowledgement that my thoughts may shift after a few more episodes, I'd say give it a try because Kim Taeri and Oh Jungse do not disappoint. I only do hope with all my heart that they don't try to force a romantic angle into the story.

Min-ji grinned with the delight of someone not about to be trapped in a room with BTS for five hours.

“Everyone, meet your new chaos coordinator,” she announced, smacking a hand onto Yongyi’s back hard enough to dislodge a lash curler from her pocket. It clattered to the floor like a starter pistol.

“Choi Yongyi. She’s got the touch. Don’t scare her off—she’s the only one who agreed to handle all seven of them.”

A beat of silence.

Geon looked up from a rack of jackets, one eyebrow twitching in approval. Haru, mid-swatch with a shimmer palette, gave a soft two-finger wave without breaking eye contact with her mannequin head. Eun-jae’s eyes narrowed, not out of hostility—just the laser focus of someone already evaluating skin undertones and stress levels like diagnostics on a car engine. Sin-jae looked her up and down once, then let out a short laugh.

“Tiny,” he said, appraising. “Looks like she’ll fly away if someone breathes wrong.”

“I wish I could,” Yongyi replied dryly, “but I’m running on six coffees and spite.”

That earned a chorus of surprised chuckles—except from Eun-jae, who tilted her head.

“Espresso or drip?”

“Espresso. Double shots. One was… possibly stolen.”

“Promising,” Eun-jae murmured.

Geon shifted aside to let her pass. “Welcome to the fire.”

“Hope you brought a fan,” Sin-jae added.

“I brought setting spray.”

Bada strolled in late, sunglasses perched in her hair and a lipstick bullet in one hand. She stopped short, looked Yongyi up and down, then smirked.

“Well,” she said, uncapping the lipstick like a weapon, “let’s see if you can survive the group chat.”

***TRIGGER WARNING: Cheating and Infidelity***

She couldn’t take it anymore. The household that was once filled with love, joy, and laughter had become bleak. It had become silent, devoid of any sign that a happy couple lived there once.

When Shouto Todoroki had presented himself to (Name) on one knee, a velvet box in hand, she cried. From happiness, from a surge of overwhelming emotion. It was a sunny day in spring, Hanami season fresh and new. The pale pink cherry blossoms were at full bloom and represented an overwhelming beauty. Much like Shouto viewed (Name), in fact. The two were in love. A few years out of high school where they both graduated together, working as heroes by day and sharing gentle kisses at night.

The Hanami party was coming to an end, but Shouto still had one more thing to do. As (Name) stood to clean up after them, he remained sitting before he rose to one knee. She didn’t even notice before he called her name, the word gentle on his soft lips. He presented her with a ring that drew a gasp from her mouth. The band was a pale pink, much like the cherry blossoms, and in the center was a shining opal. Loops and curves ran around the band itself, and embedded in the ring were small diamonds that complimented the opal.

(Name) barely choked out a yes, tears only flowing at a more vigorous speed whenever Shouto took her hand in his, slipping the ring on her finger before he kissed the dorsal of her hand and smiled gently at how much it was shaking.

Their wedding had been stupendous. While they internally both wished for it to be small, the fact that the pro hero Shouto was getting married was enough to arouse a large gathering of reporters and fans all alike. It was held a year after the engagement in Hanami season, cherry blossoms in bloom once again. (Name’s) wedding dress was one ripped from a fantasy. An off shoulder top, lace delicately decorating her bosom. It hugged her waist before flaring out like a ballgown, flowers of more lace lining the bottom.

When Shouto saw (Name), he cried. Silently, of course, but nonetheless emotional.

It was perfect.

But…Perhaps (Name) was an idealist for believing it could stay perfect forever. Or maybe even a fool.

Truthfully, (Name) understood that Shouto wasn’t the most openly emotional person. He held back his words often and didn’t immediately connect easily with others like some of his peers did. When marrying him, (Name) knew this. However, despite this, she and Shouto had established a clear and mutual understanding of one another, of course. They had decided to spend the rest of their lives together, so that was a given. The two had planned their life out almost flawlessly.

However, neither of them could account for the sudden drastic change in Shouto’s behavior.

She didn’t know when or why it happened, but one day Shouto came home after a meeting with his father. Perhaps it was that man that had spurred it on, but looking back on it (Name) figured that it had to be an amalgamation of many things.

“I’m home,” he grumbled. (Name) called out to him in response, but either he ignored her or didn’t hear her as he retreated back to their shared room and finished with the door slamming. (Name) jumped at this. Shouto was never one to lose his composure like that, so of course, something must’ve been bothering him.

She padded down the hallway, knocking lightly on the door. “Shouto, dear? Is everything alright?” She opened up the door to find her husband at his desk, already nose deep in paperwork. Frowning, she walked over to him before letting her arms fall from his neck down on to his torso. When he didn’t respond, she asked again. “Are you okay?”

Shouto stood from his chair, (Name) backing up a bit to give him space. “I’m fine,” he replied blankly.

Frowning, (Name) took his hand in her own. “You know if something is wrong, you can tell me, right?”

“I know. Don’t worry yourself about it.” He kissed the top of her head softly, causing her to smile. At the time, (Name) had simply just brushed it off.

As nights turned into days, days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, Shouto became more and more closed off. Although the couple rarely ever fought, this was something that seemed to spark negative energy between them. (Name) would get upset that Shouto wouldn’t open up to her despite the two being married, and in turn, Shouto would get upset that she was prying.

“Just mind your own business…”

“‘Mind my own business’?! Shouto, you’re my husband! This is my business!” she shouted, throwing her arms up in disbelief. The fact that he treated this as a minor deal made her even angrier. He sighed and pressed two fingers against the bridge of his nose, pinching it. “No, it’s not. You wouldn’t understand.”

“Shouto, do you even hear how ridiculously immature you sound right now? ‘I wouldn’t understand’? Our job as husband and wife is to be there to support each other, so I want to support you, but you aren’t even giving me that option!”

Shouto was a calm person, both internally and externally. Rarely did he get aggravated or frustrated, but something sparked inside of him that caused his eyes to narrow and his face to flush pink in exasperation.

“Maybe I don’t need your damn support!” he barked. His tone was scratchy and violent. Never had he yelled at (Name) with this volume and the sheer rage that laced his words, such tone being used with namely his father, and it showed. The way (Name) recoiled and took a step back, her eyes widening before they narrowed, glaring at him. “Then why the hell did you ask me to marry you in the first place?!”

He wasn’t thinking. He wasn’t thinking, because if he was, the words he was about to spit would’ve never even crossed his mind, much less left his mouth.

“I don’t exactly know myself, at the moment!”

The outrage and temper that (Name) held before faded away. She felt his words pierce through her chest and into her heart. Her words were regrettable, yes, but his cut deeper than she could fathom. Her pride, however, held the tears that had gathered in the corner of her eyes back. Clenching her fists, she turned from Shouto.

“What are you doing?” he asked as she stomped to their closet, messily throwing whatever was in sight that belonged to her in a bag. She didn’t face him—she couldn’t face him, as she snapped, “I’m leaving. Maybe perhaps when I do so, you can have the precious alone time that I’ve been so rudely depriving you of.”

Slinging the bag over her shoulder and snatching her phone off of the dresser, she left their bedroom and then the house, not forgetting to childishly slam the door behind her.

And Shouto was left alone, the silence and the memory of his words the only company he had.

That night he sat on the edge of his bed—their bed—and buried his head in his hands. They both messed up and said things that they would’ve liked to take back, but the words that left his mouth were pure venom, and he didn’t know where they came from. That night he was reminded of his mother, and how she would be disappointed to see that he had become horrifyingly close to acting like the man he resented the most.

The next morning she returned. Shouto was asleep in their bed, and (Name) fell asleep on the couch. When she woke up it was a bit before noon and a blanket had been draped over her shoulders. For a moment she was reminded of the kind and gentle person Shouto once was, and that was the Shouto she fell in love with.

That moment wouldn’t last, though. Another fight arose from the two as if it was some sort of drug.

The pattern of arguing, leaving, returning, and then arguing again became too common of a pattern to be considered healthy. Another night, another fight. (Name) left once more, and returned the next morning.

This time, however, would prove itself to be different, straying away from the pattern that had become so frustratingly normal.. When Shouto arrived back from work, (Name) was there just like he thought she would be. But beside her were large bags and suitcases filled to the brim with her items and belongings. Their room lost a sense of character, the only remaining things being Shouto’s own.

“What are you doing?”

She looked at him. Her hand was clenched tightly around something. Her eyes were glossy, and for the first time in an eternity, fat tears rolled down her blotchy cheeks. She said nothing, but extended her hand out to his and placed something cold in it. A key—the house key.

(Name) left, her footsteps and the sound of cases rolling against the floor echoed in his ears.

(Name) had left again. But this time, she didn’t come back for him.
