This left him to deal with Aegon.

Aemond neared him and bowed his head close enough to Aegon's ear that other patrons couldn't hear them: "What the actual fuck were you doing?”

Aegon bent his head backwards: "So you know how to swear, mm? Thought you only knew how to pray and kneel".

"Don't you dare", Aegon hissed, half a threat half a begging request.

"Fine, then walk. Or I will drag you if I have to. I don't have time to lose", like you do hanged in the air between them as Aemond released him.

"Because you have such an interesting life, Aemond. Your books might reciprocate one day, who knows", he snickered as he side-stepped Aemond.

"At least I don't have to pay for their company", Aemond whispered as his brother passed him.

"You're right, brother."

"What?"

Aegon opened his eyes fully and stared up at him with a frown on his still puffy face.

"Do you want me to repeat that, Aemond?”

His voice was hoarse but he looked awake enough.

Aemond let him go as if he suddenly couldn't bear his brother's touch. And he truly couldn't sometimes, it brought back bad memories. In that moment however, Aegon's eyes and voice cut as their grandfather's did.

"I was only worried that your drinking had finally caught up with you and made you ill, but maybe if this is its effect, you should continue so."

Aegon scoffed and threw the silk blankets off his body. Aemond promptly got away from him and turned his back to his brother; turning his back was against every instinct Aemond had ever held but he knew Aegon had no weapon on his person. How could he, when he was naked as his name-day?

Aemond gets back from Storm’s End, but he won’t talk. Instead, he stumbles drunkenly into Aegon's rooms.

Aegon can tell he’s hiding something, and he’s going to get the truth out of him. He is his brother’s king after all.

Below The Surface

Summary: The Green siblings have a rocky relationship at best, bound by duty and blood, till their brother Aegon suddenly changes and distances himself from them for no apparent reasons.

Aemond and Helaena navigate this change as they grow up, and they soon learn things about their own brother and themselves that they're not certain they wanted to discover.
