It took two years, but I made the Annie's Cathedral Rose Window Afghan! First time I made a full blanket, really love it!

This blanket is a monster. I had no idea how big it was going to turn out. This is it on a king sized bed. Not the best photo but I was so excited to finish it I just had to share. Tomorrow, assuming the weather is good for it, I'll get some better photos in the sun.

A researcher at Texas A&M whose work I’m familiar with is starting a new study looking at genetic factors contributing to heart disease in Borzoi and related breeds. They just put out a call for dog owners who are willing to submit saliva samples & (noodle) medical records. Studies like this need a big sample size! They’re accepting new sign-ups starting now until March 1, 2025, for dogs both in the US and internationally.

“Background and purpose

Recent research in Borzoi dogs has revealed that dogs of this breed experience sudden, unexplained death. About 85% of sudden, unexplained deaths in humans are linked to an underlying heart disease. Our existing research in Borzoi dogs has shown that they are predisposed to developing arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) and dilated cardiomyopathy (a heart muscle disease causing dilated heart chambers and weak pumping function).

Due to our documentation of the frequency of these conditions in Borzoi dogs, we seek to identify responsible genetic variations similar to what is seen in humans with electrical cardiac diseases that trigger arrhythmias and dilated cardiomyopathy.

The objective of our study is to identify genetic mutations associated with heart disease in Borzoi dogs and document their existence in other sighthound breeds.

What happens in this study

We are collecting saliva samples from both healthy Borzoi and Borzoi dogs affected with arrhythmias and/or dilated cardiomyopathy. We will also collect saliva samples from any other sighthound breeds.

We will extract DNA from these samples and perform genomic sequencing on a select number while retaining the remainder for further screening.By analyzing the sequencing data, we can compare the genes of healthy and affected Borzoi dogs and identify variants linked to their heart conditions. We will also compare the findings in Borzoi dogs to results from other sighthound breeds.

Pet owner responsibilities

A swab kit will be sent to you for at home use along with a link to an instructional video on how to properly obtain a swab of the mouth. The kit will contain equipment to collect the saliva swab, a history form for your pet, a client consent form and a shipping label to return samples to us.

Participation requirements

To participate, you must have a Borzoi dog or a sighthound breed that is either healthy or affected by arrhythmias and/or dilated cardiomyopathy. Pets may be any age or sex. Electronic or paper veterinary medical records will need to be provided.

Benefits and risks of participating

There is little to no risk for taking a brief swab of the mouth for saliva collection if procedures outlined in the video are followed. No individual genetic test results will be provided to study participants.

Compensation

There is no cost to the owner for participating in this study. No compensation will be provided.”

If you ever wondered if the pro-Palestine movement was a trend, look up the protests yesterday against the Taliban.

Oh wait, there were no protests.

The Taliban has essentially outlawed women’s existence. You cannot be heard at all, nor can any part of your skin be seen. This is actually more strict than Iran, where we saw the mass protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.

Mahsa Amini went viral on social media, so there were some protests for that. However, most protests overseas (not in Iran) had ended by spring of 2023. They didn’t end due to policy change in Iran. Women are still being persecuted there. It’s just no longer trendy to protest the Iranian government, even while the American government is helping fund the Ayatollah (and the Taliban, by the way).

We even saw the disqualification of an Olympic athlete for wearing a cape that said “Free Afghan Women”. I was hoping the movement might get started after that. I know the whole world saw her - surely this will be the start. How wrong I was.

It seems people only care when something goes viral on social media. Protests for change are only for viral movements.

Que pense le peuple afghan des talibans ?

Je vis en Afghanistan en ce moment.

Seeta Qasemie, La vie sous le joug des Talibans est catastrophique. Les gens vivent dans la pauvreté et la misère. Les femmes sont obligées de porter le hijab extrémiste. Elles n'ont pas le droit d'aller à l'école ou à l'université. Elles ne peuvent toujours pas aller travailler. Les talibans ont récemment adopté une loi interdisant aux femmes d'occuper des postes élevés au sein du gouvernement. Les droits des minorités sont violés. Le cabinet des talibans est rempli de mollahs analphabètes qui ne connaissent que la guerre et la destruction. Les personnes instruites fuient à l'étranger. Les gens n'ont pas le droit de manifester et ils sont fouettés. Un groupe religieux extrémiste est arrivé au pouvoir avec les idées dégénérées du tribalisme et de l'ethnisme, et nous sommes retournés au Moyen-Âge, ou mieux, à l'âge de pierre, et vous pensez que tout cela est de la propagande occidentale ? Je suis vraiment désolé de voir que certaines personnes soutiennent les terroristes et les extrémistes alors qu'elles ne veulent jamais d'un tel système pour elles-mêmes. Eux-mêmes veulent étudier, s'instruire, travailler, progresser, que les femmes soient libres, que les gens aient le droit de vote, mais ils adhèrent à un groupe extrémiste qui ne croit ni aux droits de l'homme, ni aux droits des femmes, ni à la démocratie et aux élections, ni à aucun principe international. Vous les défendez allègrement. La religion officielle de l'Afghanistan est islamique depuis longtemps. Depuis au moins les vingt dernières années, nous assistons à un islam modéré. Nous respectons l'Islam, mais nous savons aussi que nous ne devons pas tomber dans l'extrémisme. Nous ne devons pas rester à la traîne du progrès et de la concurrence dans le monde moderne. Nos pays voisins sont tous, en tout ou en partie, équipés d'armes nucléaires. Tous améliorent leur niveau de vie et leur bien-être et ont une société ouverte et libre. Même le Pakistan, qui soutient les talibans, la loi islamique (ou plutôt les principes terroristes au lieu de la loi islamique) et les restrictions sociales en Afghanistan, ne veut absolument pas que ces principes prévalent dans son propre pays. Dans quel pays islamique les filles et les femmes n'ont-elles pas le droit à l'éducation et à l'analphabétisme ? Dans quel pays la flagellation des femmes est-elle soutenue ? Dans quel pays soutient-on un système totalitaire et antidémocratique ? Dans aucun pays ! Mais vous soutenez les Talibans... Vous ne pouvez pas comprendre la vie en enfer. Vous ne ressentirez jamais les Afghans et leur douleur. La douleur d'une fille afghane qui ne peut pas aller à l'école et qui, si elle sort, ne peut pas porter les vêtements qu'elle veut parce que sinon elle sera punie avec un fouet. La douleur d'une femme afghane qui est le seul soutien de famille de la maison et qui vit dans la pauvreté avec plusieurs orphelins, personne ne peut comprendre la douleur des gens qui voient des personnes dans d'autres pays vivre dans la liberté, la prospérité et le développement mais eux-mêmes dans une prison, à moins d'en avoir fait l'expérience. Peut-on mieux comprendre les atrocités de l'Holocauste que celui qui est sorti vivant des camps de concentration nazis mais qui a perdu toute sa famille et ses amis ? Il ne s'agit pas du retrait des États-Unis ou de quelques clichés politiques. Il s'agit d'humanité. L'humanité est vraiment un rêve. Pardonnez-moi pour ce post émouvant, mais je suis très attristé de voir des personnes éduquées se réjouir de la prise de pouvoir par un groupe terroriste sauvage qui tue le peuple afghan depuis des années par des attaques terroristes et suicides et qui n'a aucun respect pour nos droits humains. Cependant, certains extrémistes soutiennent les talibans, mais la majorité de la société afghane est contre eux. Ils soutiennent les droits de l'homme et ne veulent pas revenir aux jours sombres des années 1990.

Des femmes afghanes protestent pour leurs droits à Herat. Les talibans utilisent la force et n'ont aucune pitié pour elles. Les photos vous racontent toute une histoire.
