Recent news re Lawyers, Judges, and AI

I haven't seen anyone on Tumblr talking about the Arizona court case where a judge allowed a family to submit AI video of a dead man to allow "him" (i.e. the AI) to testify in court, addressing his killer.

I feel like I'm hallucinating.

The AI video shows the dead man saying "he'd" (i.e. THE FUCKING AI) like to submit his own victim impact statement.

How did the judge allow this?! What was he thinking? The judge said he “loved that AI” in his closing remarks. "Bowman, the law professor, said Wales’s case avoided controversy probably because the video was introduced during a sentencing and wasn’t being used to determine the defendant’s guilt. ... Gary Marchant, a professor of law, ethics and emerging technologies at Arizona State, said attorneys might have objected to showing a video that fabricates a victim’s voice to a jury. 'In most cases, it’s going to be possibly misleading and prejudicial, probably,' Marchant said. 'So I think it’s dangerous to start using non-real evidence that is created by an AI.'"

No fucking shit!!!! Like, no offense, but I don't think we need law prof experts to figure this one out! What the actual fuck!!!!!!!!

This is coming at the same time as judges are trying to crack down on lawyers using AI to write their legal briefs—what keeps happening is that AI hallucinates court cases to cite, the lawyers don't bother to check these and they submit these AI hallucinated citations in their briefs to the courts.

“Mr. Ramirez explained that he had used AI before to assist with legal matters, such as drafting agreements, and did not know that AI was capable of generating fictitious cases and citations,” Judge Dinsmore wrote in court documents filed last week. “These ‘hallucination cites,’ Mr. Ramirez asserted, included text excerpts which appeared to be credible. As such, Mr. Ramirez did not conduct any further research, nor did he make any attempt to verify the existence of the generated citations. Mr. Ramirez reported that he has since taken continuing legal education courses on the topic of AI use and continues to use AI products which he has been assured will not produce ‘hallucination cites.’”

I'd like to note that my 14yo is smarter than this lawyer about not getting caught using AI.

Now, a visiting nobel seems to have set his eyes on his Court Sorcerer. And to top it all off, this nobel is showering Merlin with trinkets?! Since when does Merlin like overly ornate jewlery anyway? Not to be outdone, Arthur goes on a mission to find the perfect wooing gifts. Meanwhile, Merlin is working on a month-long protection ritual for which he has to continuously wear an annoyingly heavy, intricate torque and golden bracelets, mutter spells from dawn till dusk, and place runes in strategic spots throughout town. He can't wait for this to be over. Also: What's with all these baubles that keep showing up in his chambers? He hasn't felt any dark magic, but who knows, maybe he better talk to Gaius. -- This illustration depicts what happens once Arthur is tournament champion, Merlin has completed the protection ritual in a breathtaking spectacle for all to see, and the nobel is long forgotten.

After months of resisting, Air Canada was forced to give a partial refund to a grieving passenger who was misled by an airline chatbot inaccurately explaining the airline's bereavement travel policy. ... Air Canada was seemingly so invested in experimenting with AI that Crocker told the Globe and Mail that "Air Canada’s initial investment in customer service AI technology was much higher than the cost of continuing to pay workers to handle simple queries." It was worth it, Crocker said, because "the airline believes investing in automation and machine learning technology will lower its expenses" and '"fundamentally" create "a better customer experience."
