izana has trouble sleeping at night, so you tend to stay up with him until he falls asleep. but, you often fall asleep before he does. one night, he was finally able to fall asleep. however, you somehow couldn’t fall asleep that night.

you admire izana while he is sleeping soundly. it’s been a long time since he got proper sleep. you on the other hand were still wide awake. you don’t mind, it was nice to watch izana finally getting some rest. since you usually fall asleep before him, you never knew how izana slept like. until tonight, you found out izana was a sleep talker.

“mahal ko…pakiusap huwag mo akong iwan.” izana softly spoke while sleeping.

“izana?” you say quietly.

“Sa totoo lang hindi ko alam kung ano ang gagawin ko kung wala ka. pakiusap, wag mo akong iwan at manatili sa tabi ko habang buhay. Pangako mamahalin kita magpakailanman.” izana continues.

realizing that izana was a sleep talker, you wonder what he was saying. you didn’t understand tagalong at all. even if you woke izana up, he wouldn’t even remember what he was saying. so, you didn’t dare to wake him up.

“kung malungkot ka, andito lang ako para sayo. Kung masaya ka, ako ang magiging dahilan kung bakit ka masaya. at kung galit ka, maiintindihan ko kung bakit ka.” he mutters.

that was the last of what izana said while asleep. you wished you knew what izana was dreaming about. whatever he was having a dream of, he was at ease. you never seen him so at peace with himself.

you managed to wake up before izana did. he had slept in. he walks into the living room and finds you sitting on the couch watching television. you notice him and paused your show.

“how’d you sleep last night?” you ask izana. izana rubs his eyes, still trying to fully wake himself up. “i slept good…actually.” he remarks. you hum in responses.

“that’s good to hear.” you comment. izana feels as though you want to say something more, but he feels as though you’re holding back from saying anything.

“how’d you sleep? did i keep you up all night?” he questioned. you look away from him for a moment to collect your thoughts. “i didn’t get much sleep. you were sleep talking all night long and i was curious about what you were dreaming about.” you pause for a long moment.

“did you know that you dream in tagalong?”

izana looks at you with a surprised look. “no, i didn’t know that.”

“i didn’t either, i guess because i never stayed up long enough for me to know.”

there was a brief moment of silence. izana was a bit confused because you seemed to be upset about it. he just didn’t understand what you would be upset about. he didn’t know what to say, considering that he didn’t even know what he said last night.

“are you- upset? i don’t know why you’re upset and i’m just…confused.” he confesses.

“i’m not upset at you, i’m upset with myself.” you tell him.

“but, why?” izana gives you a sympathetic and confused expression on his face.

“i just feel like when you speak tagalong, i feel like you have more emotion. i could learn the langauge and know what you are saying, but i think i will never truly understand how you are feeling. you speak from the heart when you speak tagalong. something you never do when you speak english.” you explain.

“i guess that i feel like i won’t be able to understand that side of you. it feels like there’s a whole part of you that i don’t even know of. i know it’s stupid and confusing, but i just think you speak whole heartily when you speak your language. it makes me wonder what you dream about. i wonder if you slept talked in tagalong before.” you continue.

“i think i understand what you are trying to say. i don’t know what i said last night and what i was dreaming of. but, i hope you know that whether i speak tagalong or english, i will always speak highly about you. that’s something you can always be sure of.” izana says reassuringly

“mahal kita. i love you, okay?” izana says.

sorry im literally putting all of my complaints about ppl's critiques of leave the world behind here bc it's alll..... like what? so i literally looked up interviews from sam esmail and rumaan alam and i'm not crazy!!! the things i was like "this is the opposite of what was going on??" were actually the opposite of what was going on.

Some criticism I've seen is people saying "the movie mocks Rose's dependence on technology with the final scene" but it was like... Rose's journey was seeking her own solution to not wanting to be miserable and inside and waiting for death?? And she found it??

I've seen it said Julia Roberts's character was "redeemed" in the film from her bad actions, which I so heavily disagree with, and so does Rumaan Alam, in the Variety interview:

These characters don't have to like or forgive each other to agree that there are things more important to survival and making it through than Amanda being overbearing and racist. Ruth lost her mother and even though Amanda steps in and maybe saves her life (we don't know what the deer were gonna do) that is not an apology! And it's not treated like one because we don't see any sort of forgiveness from Ruth!

And then the whole "it's an attack from a foreign government making the US a victim" shit. Like... GH theorizes, out loud, that this could be the US government's doing? Anyway.

"i told you, so. many. times. already, you need to remember who you're talking to." he seethed as he glared at you with reddening irises, his eyebrows knitting into one as he furrowed them out of frustration, angry that you have yet again defied his authority. "you... are such an embarrassment." the disappointment in his voice was tangible, it permeated throughout the room as his fury towards your stubbornness grew worse and worse as each and every second passed. and the worst part was... you did not care in the slightest what he thought.

"i've given you too many chances, i've gotten too lenient with you. you need to know your place here!" he practically screamed that last part as he looked at you dead in the eyes, your unyielding eyes that seemed to have a dancing fire in them the longer you listened to him speak like that to you.

you smiled at miguel. "i know. i know my place here." you told him in the sweetest voice you could muster, not wavering as the veins on the side of his neck and temples started showing. "pero alam mo kung anong mas nakakahiya?" you asked him as you took a few steps closer to him, showing no signs of fear, shame, nor regret.

before miguel could talk you down again, you got on the tips of your toes, and--smack! right across the face, you slapped him. you were still grinning, still smiling, still evidently unbothered by his asshole attitude. "tsitsinelasin ko yang mukha mo sa susunod. kakausapin mo ako ng ganyan? hindi mo inakalang lalaban ako sayo, ha?" you threatened him as you took your slipper off and wielded it with your dominant hand.

miguel felt over the side of his face that you just slapped, a little fazed you actually did that, not just the fact that it hurt. "huwag mo 'kong subukan. you're my boss, but i'm human, just like you. unless... aaminin mo na hayop ka nga." you huffed out as you threw your slipper back on the ground after he didn't say anything. you donned it back on and walked away.

miguel contemplated on what just happened. he knew he might have pushed you around a lot lately, and that you did your best to bear with him when nobody else can... and yes, he did feel a little ashamed he talked to you like that due to a bout of anger, but...

"she just had to use a chancla to threaten me. she knows my weakness..." he muttered as he rubbed his eyes.
