Only the Lonely
In the past, sometime in the 17th or 18th century, there were the alchemists who were known above all for trying in vain to transform lead into its neighboring element, gold. Modern science, on the other hand, has shown that at least one particle accelerator is needed to achieve what the alchemists labored to no purpose for years to achieve, whereas in Greek mythology, King Midas only needed a touch of the hand.
I can't say for sure what exactly happens when Gene touches something with his hand, nor can I say for sure whether he is in possession of a particle accelerator, nor whether you need one to achieve the opposite, namely to turn gold into lead. The only thing I can say for certain is that he has managed this special trick more than once, apparently effortlessly.
Oh, it's about Animalize again today, you're probably wondering. That's right, it's once again about Animalize, but also a bit about The Elder. And for that, I think we're more than happy to take another, different look at Only You's standout middle part, which I've already drawn a parallel to a very specific song on Creatures of the Night in a previous entry.
And to fulfill the more unpleasant part of our duty, we'd rather do the same with Lonely Is the Hunter and its rather less shiny middle section. If you don't notice any similarities straight away, I can only recommend setting the Only You Player to triple speed. After that, it should be like scales falling from your eyes.
When you click on the links, they don't turn into gold, but at least they start exactly at the points discussed above. That's quite something:

...i think physics is great. I love gravity. I love centrifugal force. I love fullmetal alchemist.
Tumblr media
Is this anything?
(It has been suggested that the middle of this chart should say "Schrödinger's Cat" which is, as an addition itself, simultaneously true, false, helpful and unhelpful, just as Schrödinger wouldn't have wanted, especially as it would, ironically, not be in any of the boxes.)

Hey CT did you see we can now quantitatively detect when transmutation happens in particle accelerators? It's a shit yield and very short-lived but imagine how crazy the ghosts of alchemists are going
https://home.cern/news/news/physics/alice-detects-conversion-lead-gold-lhc
Oh yes I saw this! We've known that particle accelerators could do this for a while but it's nice to finally see firsthand confirmed evidence of it happening! Real neat!

Excerpt from Observations on the Order Draconia in Europe, with Notes on the Oriental Breeds by Edward Howe
Additional notes and transcript below the cut.
VITRIOLIC SPIT Longwing Breed, Adult The modified salivary glands, known as vitriol or acid glands, within the lower jaw release concentrated aqua regia - a combination of aqua fortis and spirit of salt - into forward facing channels in the spurs. The acid is created through similar means as stomach acid.
Vitriol Spitters cannot direct the flow of acid and must expel from above to prevent damage to themselves or others
FIRE BREATH Kazilik Breed, Adult The modified salivary glands, known also as naptha glands, within the lower jaw contain a liquid accelerant which, when combined with carbureted hydrogen water from the lower throat, are lit by the spark teeth to produce flame. The spark teeth are not true teeth and are instead mineralized protrusions of the skull.
The combination of naptha and gasses allow fire-breathers to direct expulsions in any direction. Excess water is often expelled as steam across the dragon's body.
OH BOY THIS ONE WAS A LONG ONE! I think way too hard about dragon biology, and had a lot of fun trying to write this as an 17th century naturalist.
Translations: (thanks to my spouse for their obscure alchemist knowledge)
Aqua regia: a solution of nitrohydrochloric acid
Aqua fortis: nitric acids
Spirit of salt: hydrocholric acid
Naptha: volatile, highly flammable hydrocarbon liquids of many types. (known today as "mineral spirits" or "lighter fluids")
Carbureted hydrogen water: methane dissolved in water
To expound, I don't think Mr. Howe would have totally figured out fire breath. The universe establishes that 1) dragons can direct their fire, 2) dragons can still breath while flaming and don't need to stop for air, and 3) a byproduct of the process is steam. To square all that, I think the dragon must have some sort of starter in the jaw, here as naptha (though my spouse says it could be nitric acid) that it can ignite at will, then feed with methane produced by food/bacteria and dissolved in water lower in the body. When the methane burns, the water evaporates as steam. The liquid nature of the methane water means the dragon can probably close its throat to avoid being burned.
The acid spitters are easier: I believe they were based on spitting cobras, though the spurs gave me a little trouble. Those have pressurized canals in their fangs and keep extra venom in glands. In both dragons it made sense to have modified salivary glands for this, as the muscle control and chemical production would have a headstart for evolution of the traits.
Anyways, thanks for reading!

Poll PAC: What Your Next Birthday Celebration Will Be Like 🎂🎉🎁
Tumblr media
Sup y'all, welcome back to another PAC reading. This time I'm doing a special 1 year/birthday/poll topic of choice themed pick a card! This is also a special one as VitaminSee now has 300 followers! Holy crap thank you for your support everyone! I haven't been able to get on Tumblr for a while, so I apologize if it seems like I've dropped from the aether. Life is starting to enter its hectic phase right now! Thank you so much for your patience. I'm waiting for life things to straighten out (lol as if life ever does) before I go ahead and offer some basic paid readings, which I hope to do in May.
This topic is for the next birthday you have coming up, whether that's tomorrow or next year. For my selection, I was recently lucky to have found the Wild Wisdom Companion book among a vast pile of discounted books. It's based on the Wheel of the Year. I thought this deck was perfect for making piles themed around the progression of the year and how our birthdays respond to the passage of the seasons. Pick whichever one of the Spring themed card you like most down below:
Pile 1 - The Unfurling 🌱 Pile 2 - The Wind 🕊 Pile 3 - The Door 🗝 Pile 4 - The Alchemist 🍾
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pile 1 - The Unfurling
Tumblr media
Sagittarius - Expand, Level Up, Shadow, Isolation; XVII Star, 3 of Cups, XXI World, Ace of Wands, 5 of Cups
Hello, pile 1! Your birthday is going to be the start of great expansion. Your first three oracle cards spell it out so clearly! Sagittarius is all about shooting for seemingly farfetched goals and striking the target anyway. There is so much growth going on in your pile. You're probably anticipating your next chapter to be one of reaching beyond the horizon and feeling ready to do so. Ideas or wishes that seemed impossible may be coming closer to being within your grasp. Your life is ready to take it up a notch immediately after your next birthday, where things may begin to feel like they're accelerating. Don't worry about the turbulence, it's all a part of the movement. Breaking out of your comfort zone may feel scary, but something about your next birthday will set off a chain of events that will propel you to a new phase of life.
I have a feeling that many who choose this pile will be in a transitory stage of life, like you're getting ready to start college or a new job around your birthday. It's not just another year older, this next one will be extra meaningful in terms of receiving something you've been longing for in quite some time. It's something you've been greatly eager to begin. I don't any sense that you'll be looking back too much once you go forward, since you'll be thrust rather quickly in your next chapter.
But it's still okay if you're experiencing anxiety over it, even if it's something you've really wanted. Anxiety, doubt, and fear are not necessarily indicators that something isn't right for you. It's normal to get cold feet in this context. A sprout breaking from its seed shell is no small feat; it requires a great amount of momentum and motivation. Congratulate yourself for having come this far. Let your birthday be a chance to celebrate this. Give yourself the opportunity to commemorate with friends, if they wanna help give you a birthday to remember then let them. They may feel the vibe as much as you will on that day. Don't be afraid to take that day trip out to a new place you've never seen.
What's interesting about the Isolation card is that it shows two cups. There is meanwhile a Friendship card in this deck with only one cup. So I don't know if the words were swapped with the images or what, but the sense I get is that you will very likely be in good company during your birthday. They may want to take you out dancing (the Ace of Wands is reminding me of disco lights). However, even in the midst of the event, you may feel the urge to hide away from the crowd. I'm picturing someone stepping out of a house during a party. You may need to catch your breath at times in order to process the emotions you're experiencing, as you have a lot of energetic, lit up cards just before the five of cups.
Again, getting in dark negative moods is normal when you're facing a big new stage is not indicative that things will go wrong if it's something you know you're looking forward to. If you end up spending most of the day with friends, find some space to be at peace by yourself so you can even out your feelings. These intense moods will come and go on their own, so make sure to stay balanced (and not too overly caffeinated lol) on your birthday.
Tumblr media
Pile 2 - The Wind 🕊
Tumblr media
Third House - Communication, A New Day, Ball Pits, Family; 10 of Swords, 5 of Cups, III Empress, Knight of Pentacles, 4 of Cups
How's it going pile 2? I couldn't help but notice you have two pairs of swallows in your reading. Birds may have some significance for you, maybe you'll go birdwatching or even get a pet bird. For a small number of you, the birthday could involve a plane flight out of home for a quick trip. Could you be visiting family members? There's a lot of communication going on, for sure. Even if you're not traveling out by flight, you may have family members show up to take you out somewhere. They may be insistent on seeing you, talking to you, and spending time with you. The phone might blow up first thing in the morning with notifications and voicemail.
But I'm seeing a lot of hesitance in your tarot cards. You may be feeling tired or burned out and not necessarily in the mood to celebrate. The previous year was a doozy for you so perhaps catching up on sleep is more of your priority. Ever get the feeling of wanting to sleep because life is overwhelmed and you're like, "I give up (for now)?" and call it a day? You need to give yourself a chance to recuperate around your birthday, before during and after. Have a break so you can fully recover and receive all that the coming year has to offer you.
That means letting loved ones in your life, be they bio family or chosen family, understand that you'd rather have a small get together or a chance to rest every now and then if you're invited out somewhere. If you choose to go out, there's nothing wrong with taking it slow and easy, or doing something casual like grabbing some ice cream and sitting by the riverside to ponder the next year. Communicate your feelings instead of bottling them up in an attempt to keep up with everybody else. Don't let anyone convince you of how you should celebrate, it's your day your rules!
Others of you who have a little more energy, a little more of that "last year sucks, I need to go out and do something fun to sweat it off!", I feel like the ball is emphasized here with Knight of Pentacles beneath Ball Pits. Some of you looking for more action and noise may choose to go to a ball game, or spend time at the arcade playing pinball with friends. It could even be mini golf. Whether you are the low energy (calm) or high energy (excited) seeking type, getting the chance to have some fun is important, as long as it feels right for you.
This is the pile most likely to get some kind of surprise, be that a party (high energy) or a surprise gift (low energy). There will be a sense of being pampered. Some of you may get a larger number of gifts than you may have expected. You may receive a very beautiful gift, something you may treasure for a long time. Whatever it may be, allow yourself to thoroughly enjoy it and express that joy. Let yourself embrace gratitude, being mindful of what you have now regardless of how your last year has been and how your next year will be. For your next birthday, try to focus on the present (in both meanings).
Tumblr media
Pile 3 - The Door 🗝
Tumblr media
South Node - Past, Let Your Light Shine, Bubble Gum, Winter; Ace of Cups, 9 of Swords, 3 of Pentacles, XIX Sun, Page of Wands
Hey pile 3! For your next birthday, I'm definitely seeing you go outside to celebrate. There may be an actual party held outdoors, or you might choose to go out somewhere. I'm seeing parks, possibly national parks or natural trails. I'm getting the feeling of warm sunshine, the weather will likely cooperate perfectly on your day. You could be cruising through town, going from store to store (the 3 of pentacles reminds me of a mall here). Your birthday feels expansive and adventurous, ready for something new.
A small number of you may wish to engage a little bit in the spotlight, or you may be placed into a position of receiving more attention on this day. If you wish to, your birthday would be a great day to showcase your talents or passions, since I'm picking up a bit of Leo energy in this pile. With lips in Bubble Gum, you could be giving a speech? I'm picturing an actual toast, if you feel the strong urge to speak out then do so, let yourself be heard. I'm also seeing people sing for you at restaurants, so if that isn't your style, it's best to find a place to eat that doesn't do that sort of thing.
This birthday could be like your own version of a New Year's Eve celebration. Some of you may actually be born in the winter or around New Year's, so holidays and birthdays could tie in together. You're wanting your birthday to stand out amidst the traditional festivities (I've known many people born around Christmas who hate having their birthday gifts thrown under the tree, so you're not alone in that frustration!). You may get the idea of doing something out of the ordinary. Let yourself take the spotlight--it's your special occasion!
There's a message in your pile of letting old things go as you step into a new age. Old things from the year prior may still be sticking onto you, old issues from unresolved matters may pop up. They could be on the more practical side, like needing to sign something or finish a task on time. Be ready to step into the future unafraid--now is the time to shed the baggage. Your birthday can be the fresh start to a bright new trip around the sun, but you gotta give yourself that chance. If something needs to be resolved, and you got the time, tie up your loose ends beforehand so it's not weighing on you as you celebrate.
Your birthday is a threshold to an exciting new time for you. It may be like a breath of fresh air. I keep hearing "refreshed" and "invigorated", so this may be how you feel at the end of your birthday. You may do something that makes you think, "huh, why don't I do this more often?" That could be the key for you to step into something brand new. Will spending time with your friends refresh you, or going to a concert and discovering a new band that you will fall in love with as it warms up the show? Or may you desire to spend more time out in nature? Lean into what lights you up, listen to what engages you, and move from there.
Tumblr media
Pile 4 - The Alchemist 🍾
Tumblr media
Imum Coeli - Roots, Snow Day, Forest, Transformation; 3 of Cups, 6 of Cups, Ace of Swords, XII Hanged Man, 8 of Swords
What's up, pile 4? Your birthday is looking to be the absolute warmest and coziest out of all the piles. Many of you may identify strongly with introversion. I'm sensing a lot of you have your birthday around autumn or the cooler times of the year when most people are ready to bundle up in blankets or sit by the wood stove while awaiting the first signs of frost. Many of you may get a lucky chance to stay at home instead of needing to work or go to school, so you'll have the day off to plan out what you want to do. Others of you may desire to take time off if you have the chance to, I would go for it especially if you've been feeling the need to rest. You may live near trees or desire to be out in nature as a way to kick back.
I'm seeing someone invite a few friends over to watch old reruns of favorite shows while baking. It could be a gathering of closest friends, I'm not getting the sense that it'll be a big to-do bash. This day will be short, sweet, and simple. It's a good day for doing hobbies or spending time indulging in the gifts you were given. Some of you may rather spend time with family or those you live with instead of inviting people over. You and your family may share a special way of celebrating birthdays, I don't know of any birthday specific cultural traditions from the top of my head but you may have special rituals unique to you and your family. Either way, I get that you'll have a modest celebration that's nevertheless full of camaraderie and relaxing activities.
The description for the Alchemist card says "Allow Transformation", and you have another Transformation card. You may be doing a lot of transmuting on the inside, working through old stubborn patterns and limiting beliefs around this time. I'm seeing the ball of flame near the snow as if you're melting old self-sabotaging blockages away to make room for more growth in your coming year. This flame, this transmuting energy, is making way for the new to arrive.
The Hanged Man being tangled up in vines beneath a forest makes me think that you've been hung up on something that needs to be let go. You must prune in order to effectively grow. Too much in a small space can lead to cramming and confusion. You must deal with the thoughts tangling themselves up in your mind before cultivating the thoughts you want in their place. Changes may happen slowly on the outside, but when certain patterns are fully cleared out things can really take off.
So, for example, let's say you've wanted to sign up for a ceramics workshop for your birthday, or spend the day cleaning house (if you happen to find cleaning therapeutic). To do so, you'll need to not only free up your schedule, but free your mind of thoughts trying to convince you that you can't learn or can't clean. Perhaps it's difficult to not see the forest as just a bundle of trees. But a forest is more than trees, it's an entire system that supports itself in a perpetual cycle. Don't fill up your days with too many tasks, especially on your birthday. Pace the day with both the things you want to do and the things you have to do. The time around birthday will show you how to integrate the best of both worlds. We can have cake and eat it too, it's just a matter of pacing and doing things one at a time.

lycanwing hiccup and dragon fight >>:) @mr-business-whump
It had been three days since the full moon's end. Three days of extra transformations with no sign of stopping. The moon was waning every night, and every night Hiccup still became a dragon, broken wing and all.
"I don't get it," he said to Astrid one evening in their ugly lodgings. "Why is it still happening?"
"Maybe something in that injection," she suggested. "Maybe that alchemist figured something out."
"Could they figure out how to cure me?" Hiccup asked. Astrid looked at him, surprised.
"Do you want to be cured?" she asked carefully. "Completely?"
He hesitated. "Maybe. I don't know. I... would miss flying on my own."
"I can imagine," she said. "But I get it: transforming hurts, huh?"
"Even more now with the arm," he sighed. "It's not worth it right now, but if i could fly... I'd reconsider." A peculiar sensation swept him. "Oh, great."
He wriggled carefully out of his shirt and handed it to Astrid. Modesty was becoming less important, but he still blushed as he removed the pants he'd been given so they wouldn't tear. Astrid was polite enough to look away until he was under the blanket from the bed.
"Sorry about this," he said, breath coming short.
"I don't mind," she said, smiling and touching his chest. "Even here, I don't mind." He huffed a laugh which turned into a groan as the transformation accelerated.
He'd figured out how to hold his arm at the right angle so it didn't jostle as it smoothly formed a wing or reversed to his arm again. The pain of spines, fangs, and scales was harder to manage. Several agonizing seconds later, he was panting through a scaled snout and a mouthful of sharp teeth.
Astrid rubbed the little scales around his eyes gently. It was very soothing, and Hiccup folded himself up in the too-small hut with his head in her lap.
"Hopefully they won't bother us tonight," she said, without much hope of it. Sure enough, the door banged open to reveal Ryker holding a collar with a chain attached.
"Get over here," he snapped.
Hiccup growled, raising his head.
"If you blast us, she pays for it," Ryker told him. Two hunters with crossbows stepped up and aimed at Astrid.
"It's okay," Astrid muttered. "Go on." Warily, Hiccup came to stand in front of Ryker. He snarled as the collar was slapped around his neck and tightened cruelly.
"That's a good monster," Ryker sneered. "Got something new for you tonight, beast!"
"He's still hurt," Astrid said, standing up.
"If he's good enough, he won't get more hurt," Ryker told her. "You'd better hope he's good at fighting." He laughed. "We got a Typhoomerang who'd love to meet him!"
Astrid gasped, horrified. "Dragon fighting?!"
"How much do you bet on him, Ryker?" one hunter asked. "I think the Typhoomerang's got him roasted."
"Ten gold pieces on the monster," Ryker replied. He tugged on the chain. Hiccup snarled and tried to hold back, but Ryker was stronger.
"You can't do this," Astrid said. She fought her way forward to walk by Hiccup's side. "Viggo can't want Hiccup killed in a fight!"
"Oh, we'll pull him out if it gets too bad," Ryker sneered. "Come on, lads!"
The arena looked hastily constructed; ramshackle fences protected a crowd of hunters cheering on a Typhoomerang that was ripping into a dead yak. The dragon looked up with a snarl as Hiccup approached reluctantly.
"In you go!" Ryker roared. He opened the gate and dragged Hiccup inside.
"No!" Astrid screamed, but a hunter grabbed her and dragged her off to the side as the fight began.
The dragons circled each other warily. Hiccup kept his broken wing close to his side, facing away from the Typhoomerang. It screeched at him, and Astrid recognized the panicked note. This dragon (a female, she noticed) didn't want to be here any more than Hiccup did.
Hiccup tried to give a consoling noise, but she wasn't interested. Her wingspan greatly out-shadowed his, and she spread them wide in a threatening display. Hiccup tried to demonstrate non-combativeness.
"Fight, dammit!" a hunter yelled, pounding a fist on the fences.
The Typhoomerang screeched again and shot a blast of fire out over the fence. The hunters had quick reflexes and ducked, laughing. Hiccup tried to get the Typhoomerang's attention, but she lashed out at him. He yelped as her tail smacked across his snout and bit back a growl.
"Don't hurt him!" Astrid yelled at the Typhoomerang. Of course, she couldn't understand her. Ryker laughed and took Astrid's arm from the hunter holding her.
"This is the best entertainment we've had in weeks," he growled.
Hiccup yelped again from the ring as the dragon thrust her wings out again and threw him across the space. He hit the fence and howled in pain.
Astrid struggled to get to the ring, but Ryker dragged her back. "You'd better hope he stays entertaining," he said in her ear. "My men might look to you for fun if he dies." He laughed at Astrid's visceral disgust. His mouth shut with a snap as a hand landed on his shoulder.
"Brother," Viggo said. His voice was barely restrained and Astrid saw the way his nails dug into Ryker's skin. "Will you kindly explain what on Midgard is happening here?"
"They'll kill him!" Astrid cried. "Get him out of there!"
Viggo took her other arm and pried Ryker's fingers off her. There would probably be Grimborn-shaped bruises, but she didn't care. "I apologize for my brother," Viggo said, voice disgusted. "Ryker. Stop the fight at once."
Ryker looked ready to disobey, but Viggo's eyes flashed. Intimidated, Ryker pulled a whistle from his pocket and let off a few short blasts. The hunters groaned and grabbed their weapons, nets, and bolas.
The Typhoomerang saw this and screamed. She let off a wave of fire that Astrid could feel at a distance and thrashed wildly, forcing Hiccup against the fences again. He hissed and tried to wriggle free.
Viggo shoved Astrid aside and stormed up to the fences. "Restrain them!" he bellowed. This wasn't the calm, smug Viggo Astrid had seen before. She watched, shocked, as the hunters scrambled into the ring and threw themselves at the Typhoomerang. Better than than face Viggo's wrath, maybe?
Hiccup let himself be led out of the ring by the chain and collar once the Typhoomerang was restrained. Viggo put a much-too-proprietary hand on Hiccup's nose.
"This won't happen again," Viggo said in a low voice. He gently stroked Hiccup's snout, and Hiccup, clearly exhausted, closed his eyes.
Astrid felt a terrible thought bloom as she recalled the way Viggo stood too close to Hiccup, rested his hands on his shoulders... the words 'my dear' even sounded different when said about him instead of her.
Gods, she prayed the others would find them soon.

Dragon blood is one of the most powerful and versatile magical substances known, discovered to have 12 distinct uses by the legendary wizard Albus Dumbledore. Its applications span across various fields, from potion-making to enchantment, making it invaluable to wizards and alchemists alike. Here are the 12 renowned uses of dragon blood:
1. Powerful Cleaning Agent: Dragon blood can dissolve nearly any magical residue or potion stains, making it essential in keeping potion labs and magical tools clean, especially after handling volatile substances.
2. Potion Ingredient: Highly sought after for its magical potency, dragon blood is a key ingredient in advanced potions. It acts as a catalyst, amplifying the effects of other ingredients and allowing for the creation of highly complex brews.
3. Healing Elixir: Known for its regenerative properties, dragon blood is used to treat severe magical wounds and injuries. When properly distilled, it accelerates tissue repair and can heal burns, cuts, and even some dark curses that resist standard healing spells.
4. Strengthening Magical Wards: When used in protective charms, dragon blood fortifies magical barriers, making them more resistant to curses, hexes, and dark magic. It’s particularly useful in shielding places like Gringotts or ancient wizarding fortresses.
5. Elixir of Life: In certain alchemical concoctions, dragon blood plays a crucial role in life-extending elixirs. While not as powerful as the Philosopher’s Stone, it can significantly prolong a wizard’s life when combined with other rare ingredients.
6. Magical Ink for Enchantments: Dragon blood, mixed with specific powdered substances, is used to craft permanent magical runes or symbols. These enchanted markings can imbue objects with magical properties, from simple protection to more complex, custom spells.
7. Alchemy: Dragon blood is indispensable in the art of alchemy. It helps stabilize volatile transmutation processes and is used by master alchemists when working with unstable magical compounds, allowing transformations that would otherwise be too dangerous.
8. Spell Amplification: Wizards have been known to use dragon blood in potions that temporarily enhance their magical abilities. A small dose can significantly boost a wizard’s spellcasting strength, precision, and stamina, making their magic more powerful and effective.
9. Magical Armor: Combined with dragon hide, dragon blood is used to craft protective garments and armor that are highly resistant to both physical damage and magical attacks. Dragon blood-infused materials can repel even the strongest offensive spells.
10. Fireproofing: Due to its origin, dragon blood can be used to strengthen fireproofing charms. Objects or clothing treated with it become exceptionally resistant to all forms of fire, both magical and non-magical.
11. Antidote to Truth Serums: Dragon blood can counteract the effects of Veritaserum, the most potent truth serum. This antidote is extremely rare and highly prized by those who deal with sensitive information and need to protect themselves from forced interrogation.
12. Magical Energy Conductor: In advanced magical artifacts, dragon blood is used to channel and store magical energy. These artifacts, often created by expert spellcasters, can hold powerful spells that can be activated later, similar to a magical battery.
These twelve uses make dragon blood one of the most valuable substances in magical practice, highly prized not only for its inherent power but also for its versatility across multiple branches of magical study.

Alchemy and Magic
Well it's about time I talked about the core idea of the setting. There are a few different kinds of magic that exist in Prima Materia, all of which stem from some mastery over the titular substance that makes up everything. I'm mostly going to be talking about Alchemy because it's the main form of magic that most players will be coming into contact with, but there are several disciplines that exist.
Gods like Patek do magic innately, they've mastered the art of pulling prima materia from the fabric of the universe and willing it into what they wish. Some people can also do magic innately, usually with the help of something else: Vessels have a quirk of their soul that attracts certain metaphysical beings able to live there, and often offer their services to the Vessel as 'rent'. Magi use alchemical roots (I'll explain those in a bit) to inject themselves with prima materia and sling crude elemental spells with their will. Some animals evolved patterns in their skin or incorporate alchemically conductive metals to do certain spells, like the Urd trees in the western forests of Falbhia that can grow up to 1000-1200 meters tall because their bark grows in such a pattern that channels magic to make them lighter than they would be otherwise.
But, the primary way people on Patek tap into magic is with alchemy.
Alchemy in the modern setting is a field of study and scientific undertaking, though cultures on Patek have been practicing alchemy in various forms since the dawn of civilization. All that's needed for a basic alchemical spell are its components; a sigil, a root, and a focus. A root is made from an alchemically conductive material, and etched into the root is a sigil. Some cultures also raise the sigil from the material, though since metallurgy has developed that's been more rare. The focus is also made of an alchemically conductive material, and is shaped in such a way that the raw energy from the sigil and root are funneled in a particular way to get the desired effect. A root and a focus are also not usually distinct parts in most places on Patek, as utilitarian spells are used constantly. Some examples of these spells are clay carvings that emit an odor to lure certain animals, and Koura nets laced with silver whose shapes cause them to emit warmth for particularly cold nights or latitudes. People on the Atiyeret peninsula have been making magic bowls for thousands of years, meant to capture a person's soul after they die and place them in a mausoleum with the rest of their family; something that warrants its own blog post later.
Outside of its nearly infinite utilitarian uses, there are of course military ones. The military use of alchemical spells goes almost as far back as the utilitarian uses, and is just as varied. The Entari create staffs from Urdwood and carve them with sigils, allowing their priests and knights to call down lightning or create strong winds as they will. The Narud in Makeret incorporate sigils into their bows to make them stronger, and most industrial nations have alchemical weaponry such as guns that create flying spikes of ice and cannons that create and spew greek fire. In the past, some alchemists have captured angry ghosts and bound them to machines for war, though this is largely frowned upon and the people who did it are known in history as the world's villains.
Military things are not the only effects under alchemy's purview of course. There are sigils made to accelerate tissue growth for healing, though not without side effects. There are also sigils used explicitly for the making of tinctures which have various effects, such as imbuing strength unto the imbiber. Industrial nations have factories that make near-instant acting healing tinctures like any other medicine out of aqua vitae, honey, activated charcoal, and the effect imbued by the proprietary sigilry they use. There are even some alchemical power plants that use sigilry and machinery to make electricity, though sigils that make electricity directly can be finicky so most of them create power by boiling water.
How do players interact with this though?
Well, there is the Alchemist profession which is the most obvious, but mechanically, alchemy hasn't been entirely written. There's a skeleton for it, involving grades of quality for material and certain shapes and sigils that a player can use to make various different spells. The goal is to put the player in a sandbox and let them build whatever they want within the limitations of what their character can do and the materials available.
There are four distinct kinds of alchemist, and alchemists aren't the only ones who can use alchemy. There are Dunamists, who are more akin to chemists and make things like alchemist's fire and dynamite. Homunculists create constructs that can do a wide variety of tasks, or memorize lists and instructions to repeat back to you. Eternalists are just Humonculists without borders; instead of making a body they dig one up, and some may become obsessed with the idea of immortality. Philosophists are the most in-line with what alchemists are in the real world, they make alchemical spells and tinctures, and try to complete the "final work," the pinnacle of alchemical prowess to philosophists, the creation of the philosopher's stone. State alchemists in Eastern Atiyeret know the recipe and use it to great effect, but that's a heavily guarded secret.
Players who want to be alchemists can go down one of those four paths, or mix and match different philosophies, perhaps in an attempt to create something like a Golem with sigilry on its arms to spray water on burning buildings, or acid on foes.
Anyway. I need to go back to reworking ranged combat. Thank you for reading all this, next week is up to chance. I want to write the species highlight for humans, but we shall see, it depends on if I can playtest ranged combat this week.

The Journey Forward
Foster Cameron Hunter’s creative evolution is far from complete—if anything, it is accelerating. Each new piece deepens his exploration of the mystical, the subconscious, and the unseen forces shaping our reality.
The Electric Mystic Artist is not just an identity; it is a philosophy—a way of seeing, feeling, and translating the intangible into form.
As Foster continues pushing the boundaries of digital collage, his work increasingly serves as a bridge between the known and the unknown.
His pieces are not mere images but catalysts—portals designed to awaken something dormant within the viewer. He believes that art should not just be experienced passively but should engage the soul, trigger introspection, and spark a shift in consciousness.
Through exhibitions, collaborations, and digital showcases, his art reaches seekers across the globe—those drawn to the magnetic pull of the mystical, the visionary, and the transformative.
With every creation, he reaffirms his role as both artist and alchemist, weaving energy, light, and meaning into a body of work that is as enigmatic as it is illuminating.
And so, The Electric Mystic Vision continues to unfold—an ever-expanding universe of symbols, stories, and revelations, inviting those who dare to step inside.

Mulgore Ethnomedicine & Shu'halo Contributions to Alchemy
The ethnic medicinal practices of the Shu'halo people of Mulgore have long been a subject of fascination for scholars of alchemy and herbalism. For centuries, the tauren inhabitants of this lush region of Kalimdor have cultivated an extensive pharmacopoeia of medicinal plants, fungi, and mineral substances native to their grasslands and mountain foothills.
The Shu'halo's encyclopedic knowledge of Mulgore's flora and fauna has enabled them to develop a sophisticated system of traditional medicine incorporating hundreds of therapeutic preparations. These include poultices, salves, tinctures, and decoctions to treat a wide range of physical and spiritual ailments. Shu'halo medicinal expertise also extends to the ritual and magical dimensions of healing, with tribal shamans employing sacred herbs, totemic talismans, and incantations to invoke the restorative powers of their Earthmother goddess.
Tumblr media
The Shu'halo have made significant contributions to the broader field of alchemy on Azeroth by sharing their medicinal knowledge with the races of the Horde. Orcish healers now incorporate numerous tauren remedies into their own practices, while Shu'halo druids and herbalists are highly sought after as teachers by apprentice alchemists from Orgrimmar to Silvermoon.
Ceremonial Concoctions
The Shu'halo people, also known as the tauren, have developed a distinctive alchemical tradition that reflects their deep connection to the natural world and the elemental spirits they revere.
One unique aspect of Shu'halo alchemy is their use of specially prepared dried herbs, crushed minerals, and other natural reagents gathered from the wild lands of Mulgore and beyond. These ingredients are combined in ceremonial vessels crafted from materials like horn, stone, and clay, each imbued with shamanic blessings to enhance the potency and purity of the elixirs. Shu'halo alchemists employ ritual chants and trances to commune with the spirits during their work, invoking the powers of earth, air, water, and sun to imbue their brews with elemental magic.
Another distinctive Shu'halo technique involves capturing the morning dew from the petals of wildflowers that grow on the high plateaus of their ancestral homeland. This mystically charged dew is mixed with the milk of their revered Sunwalker kodo beasts and slow-simmered in a potion that is said to grant clarity of mind and spirit.
Signature tauren alchemical creations include the Tears of the Earthmother, a restorative draught made from mountain spring water, prairie flowers and Kodo horn shavings, as well as Suntouched Ointment, a golden salve that accelerates healing and protects against corruption. Through their holistic, spirit-guided approach to herbalism and potion-making, Shu'halo alchemists create potent medicines and tonics that fortify the mind, body and soul in harmony with the living world.

(queerloquial) one of maur's adoptive parents was an alchemist and the main doctor for her village, and she spent a lot of her childhood helping him out; running deliveries and keeping up the greenhouse, mostly, but she also spent a lot of time sitting on the counter watching him create potions, and he would let her try the ingredients to learn about them. this led to her first time getting high, as at eight years old she misjudged how much is in ''just a pinch'' of void salts (his hands are so big! and hers so tiny! she thought it was a reasonable adjustment!) and then spent the rest of the day staring through the fabric of the world. after that she was much more supervised during lessons
@queerloquial
OH NOOOO i feel bad for her but that's also so funny dkjvkjdnvmlidbck poor baby was TRIPPIN
oc fact for fact: konahrik was trained as an alchemist and healer prior to being taken as vahlok's apprentice. it was this knowledge of restoration that ultimately led to them being a NIGHTMARE to fight because they learned how to control the blood flow of other people, anywhere from how to stop it entirely all the way to accelerating it to unsustainable degrees.

I hope this doesn't come off as disrespectful, because I'm genuinely curious, but like...is alchemy "real"? Because the way you speak about it is how I wish I could, myself, appreciate it and you're the closest I've ever found to a real world wizard which excites me a great deal. I totally respect if for you it's actually just an interesting academic study without intention, I'm just curious for how you view it in that lens.
No that's a good question!
Short answer: Yes, as in alchemists were real people who could actually do cool shit sometimes, but they weren't actually transmuting lead into gold, you need a particle accelerator for that.
In the 4th century, you weren't a scientist, that word hadn't been invented yet. You were a Natural Philosopher. You studied everything from the stars, to mathematics, to medicine, to the nature of herbs and stones.
In the medieval era, you weren't an astronomer, you were an astrologer. Telling people's horoscopes involved a lot of astronomical math. There wasn't really a difference between astronomy and astrology.
In the renaissance era, you weren't a chemist. The term chemist didn't exist yet. You were an alchemist. You tried to make gold sometimes, but you also manufactured dyes, glass vessels, cosmetics, paints, and medicines. You were kind of a whitesmith, and a glass-blower, and a doctor, and sometimes just a con-man.
Alchemy and chemistry have a relationship similar to Astrology and Astronomy. But, don't think of alchemy as just "Chemistry with magic." Alchemy is the father of modern chemistry. It is the cocoon that chemistry sprouted out of.
The thing is, alchemy is more "real" than astrology is. You know what a common use of astrology was in the medieval era? Diagnosing diseases. You'd check someone's horoscope to determine what medicine to give them. This didn't work. A medieval astrology textbook isn't going to be useful for diagnosing why your stomach hurts.
But!
Medieval alchemy texts are actually useful sometimes. If you want to dye some copper so it looked more like gold, there are alchemy texts that can tell you how to do that. If you want to distill the mercury out of some cinnabar, alchemists could do that. They didn't really know how or why that worked, but they could do it! If you want a potion that could make you immortal, the alchemists could make a philter of mercury and lead that would definitely 100% kill you and it would hurt the whole time you were dying. You can't win em all.
Im writing about the history of alchemy on my patreon if you wanna support me!

Prestige Class Spotlight 14: Daggermark Poisoner
Tumblr media
(art by Photomaster70 on DeviantArt)
In the city of Daggermark, the criminal underworld has cornered the local market on poisons, with the Poisoner’s Guild working to perfect new and greater toxins to weaken and make suffer.
Some join in hopes of making use of the guild’s resources for their own goals, while others may view it as a way to gain fame or infamy for their alchemical skill or skill as an assassin.
No matter what the reason is, however, those who prove their prowess may indeed gain the attention of the guild, and access to their secrets.
Naturally, such a skill is not exactly smiled upon in polite society, but those who have need of their skills know that they are among the best due to their association with the guild.
If you’re interested in a poison-based character, this may certainly be for you, so let’s take a look at what’s inside!
This prestige class requires mastery of alchemy, medicine, and deft hands. In addition, it requires training in how to use poisons carefully without poisoning oneself, meaning this prestige class is available to alchemists and ninjas, as well as rogues and vigilantes via talents they can take, and possibly the investigator if you decide to count poison lore as poison use. Additionally, certain archetypes may get the poison use ability and therefore be viable options.
These apothecaries are especially skilled at brewing potions, and can even treat a poison to change it’s nature so that it can be applied in different ways, such as turning one normally applied to a weapon into an inhalable gas, for example.
Additionally, their constant exposure to poisons gives them a measure of resistance until they become totally immune.
They are also very efficient, crafting poisons and applying them with grace and speed.
Despite their profession being the creation of poisons, they are also able to apply their skills at fighting back against them, giving them basic magic for sensing poison and improving their ability to treat patients afflicted by such toxins.
These poisoners also get their own array of tricks and talents to choose from, ranging from smoke bombs that can be further altered with poisons, combining and altering poisons, creating and launching poisoned traps, brewing poisoned tailored to be especially virulent to certain species, and even learning various minor poison magics for altering, enhancing, or generating poison.
Given how they work for a guild that brews poisons to sale, they learn several efficiency techniques to increase the yield and speed at which they can brew.
They also are very familiar with the mechanisms of traps, especially those that use poison, allowing them to disable or even craft them with great skill.
They also learn the basics of attacking a foe’s weak points, ensuring that foes are heavily injured in addition to poisoned.
However, they can also choose to instead target key blood vessels, reducing the initial damage to instead better accelerate the rate at which their poison affects vital organs.
Near their zenith they are especially swift at applying poison.
Furthermore, they can quickly brew the right poison for the job within minutes or even seconds in an emergency, though such hastily made toxins are chemically unstable and break down quickly as a result.
If you’re interested in specializing in poisons and traps, as well as even making a living selling poisons, this prestige class could certainly be for you. Your exact build will vary based on what class you use for the base, but generally you’ll want to be able to strike from the shadows with your poisoned weapons so you can forgo sneak attack to boost the DC. After all, poison DCs do tend to fall off at later levels.
With their focus on substances that weaken and kill, it’s safe to say that there is a certain level of moral ambiguity or outright evil. One has to wonder how this came about. Were they once doctors of medicine, turning their understanding of toxins to darker works? Or maybe they were simply talented with an alchemy lab and carved out a niche for themselves in an amoral place.
Tarn linnorm venom is one part poison, one part potent acid, so poison brewers will pay out the nose to get ahold of fresh venom glands from one. Apparently, this is exactly what has happened, as a recent string of killings revolve around victims rapidly dissolving from the inside out from minor cuts. However, when the remains begin reanimated as undigested undead, it’s clear that the provider has been doing some experimentation as well.
Having come to utterly despise the primitive organics they find themselves thrust among, Elegy-19 has put their medical skills to work in devising increasingly lethal and painful poisons, the android hoping to one day poison entire cities.
The Black Apothecary is as elusive as it’s products are lethal, the owner moving the shop around regularly in the underground with only bare hints at it’s location. Still, the party must track it down if they want to convince the owner to tell them who they sold the poison that nearly killed the king to.
