This Month In History - September
Here are just a few of the pop culture landmark anniversaries I am raising a glass to this month:
Sept. 5, 1957: On the Road release
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1957, Jack Kerouac’s magnum opus was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 65th On The Road!
Sept. 11, 1992: Crossing the Bridge opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1992, one of the most underrated movies of the 90s was released. Writer/director Mike Binder has gone on to have a big career in both film and TV, but this was a remarkable debut IMHO. A few years after high school Mort (played by Josh Charles) still hangs out with his high school buddies in suburban MI in the late 70s, but he aspires to being a comedy writer. When they get an offer to transport drugs from Canada into American, he has some decisions to make. It is a really personal coming of age story and I highly recommend seeking it out. Happy 30th CTB!
Sept. 14, 2012: The Master opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2012, Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic about a WW2 vet looking for some guidance via a new religion was released. This was a very polarizing film and in 2012, a lot of audiences just didn’t get it. I’ve seen it quite a bit since then and the cinematography, the production design and the ensemble are all incredible, but it’s really about the utter sparks flying between the leads Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman. PTA has said that this is his favorite of his films. I don’t agree with that, but its definitely one of the best of the 2010s (I named it #38 on my Best Movies of the 2010s list). Happy 10 Master!
Sept. 15, 2017: Concrete and Gold release
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2017, the Foo Fighters’ 9th album was released. After a number of albums recorded in their studio, and various high concepts (recording in a garage, recording an acoustic side and an electric side, recording a each different track in a different city) which were all good, this was a return to basics. The band recorded in a studio with noted pop producer Greg Kurstin. I named this my #1 Album of 2017 and my #10 of the 2010s. Happy 5 C&G!
Sept. 18, 1987: Amazon Women on the Moon opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1987, one of my favorite sketch comedy movies was released. Similar to Kentucky Fried Movie released a decade earlier, this was a series of skits, mostly spoofing late night TV. The problem with most anthology movies is that some are stronger than others and in this one there were several directors, but I found it all to be super funny. I watched it when I was a tween and have watched it a number of times since. Happy 35th AWOTM!
Sept. 18, 1992: Singles opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1992, Cameron Crowe’s Gen X romance set during the Seattle music scene in the 90s was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017 and here is my review of the 25th anniversary edition of the soundtrack. Happy 30th Singles!
Sept. 21, 2007: Into the Wild opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2007, Sean Penn’s best movie as a director was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 15 ITW!
Sept. 22, 1982: Family Ties premieres
Tumblr media
One of the best family sitcoms of the 80s premiered on NBC in Sept. 1982. In many ways this show was way ahead of its time by showing the political divide within a family, with ex-hippie parents and kids including young republican Alex P. Keaton brilliantly played by Michael J. Fox. But the show was actually very funny and it addressed many serious issues for a sitcom at the time. Happy 40th FT!
Sept. 24, 2002: Sea Change release
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2002, one of Beck’s best albums was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 20th Sea Change!
Sept. 25, 1982: Silver Spoons premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1982, one of my favorite sitcoms as a kid premiered on NBC. Ricky Schroeder played a tween who goes to live with his rich Dad, who didn’t know he had a son from a previous relationship. The laughs were big! And every kid wanted to live in that house with a train running through it and video arcade games. Happy 40th Silver Spoons!
Sept. 26, 1987: Alf animated series premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1987, after the success of the live action Alf sitcom, the animated series premiered. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 35 Alf animated series!
Sept. 26, 2007: Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace release
Tumblr media
Speaking of Foo Fighters, their 6th album was released in Sept. 2007. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 15 ESP&G!
Sept. 27, 1992: The Ben Stiller Show premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1992, one of the all-time great TV sketch comedies premiered. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 30th TBSS!
Sept. 28, 2012: Looper opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2012, one of the best sci-fi movies of the century was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 10 Looper!
Sept. 30, 1982: Cheers premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1982, one of the longest-running TV sitcoms premiered on NBC (BTW Sept. 1982 was a big month for NBC!?!). Cheers was about a neighborhood bar in Boston run by a former Boston Red Sox player Sam Malone. Even though it was filmed in a Hollywood studio, I always thought it was so cool how they made references to Boston and the area. The show lasts 11 seasons and didn’t lose its steam or jump the shark. It was a show I discovered in re-runs midway through the series run and then got hooked on the new episodes as they were airing. Happy 40th Cheers!

File: Casper the Friendly Ghost
SCP#: AGF
Code Name: Casper, the Friendly Ghost
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-AGF is allowed to roam freely within Site-AA and often makes for good conversation with Foundation staff. Similar to SCP-ALF, he has unlimited access to common areas of Site-AA. Though unlike other anomalies allowed to wander freely he is simply told to stay away from restricted areas. Unlike other anomalies he has proven to be trustworthy and never disobeys Foundation law.
In the event of a containment breach SCP-AGF has proven as a great ally in finding missing personnel and escorting them to the nearest and safest area. As such it is essential every Foundation staff member maintains a good relationship with him. If any Foundation staff have a bad relationship with SCP-AGF they are to be transferred to another Foundation site immediately. There are no exceptions.
Description: SCP-AGF is a ghost class anomaly with the unusual ability to be semi-transparent to the naked eye and be able to interact with any physical object. It should be noted it is possible for other ghost class anomalies to achieve this, but they normally need an "anchor" of some kind first. How SCP-AGF has so much spiritual power without needing any kind of assistance or being metaphysically no different to the average ghost is unknown.
SCP-AGF is able to phase through walls, possess objects as if they are his body, and make objects levitate like a normal ghost. However, unlike a normal ghost SCP-AGF is able to eat anything, change his shape without limitations, and even has a purifying touch on demons he encounters. How it's possible for a ghost anomaly to have an anomalous ability that's normally lethal to ghost anomalies is unknown.
SCP-AGF was discovered in 1945 thought he wasn't contained until 1960. SCP-AGF was originally in the captivity of several vile and trickster ghosts that tried to make SCP-AGF evil. Why they wanted to achieve this is unknown. Thankfully the Horizon Initiative and the Global Occult Coalition had several joint operations over the years to exercise and exterminate these hostile entities. Unfortunately, after they were done, they tried to get SCP-AGF as well thinking he deserved the same fate. One HI exorcist however met with SCP-AGF and sympathized with him. Against the councils orders he helped SCP-AGF get into Foundation custody for protection.
The exorcist and SCP-AGF helped show off SCP-AGF's anomalous abilities while also showing he was not a threat of any kind. As such, when the exorcist left, the Foundation helped cover for his disappearance to the HI. The Foundation also agreed to protect SCP-AGF form the GOC.
SCP-AGF has proven to be very loyal to the Foundation and even values all forms of life especially human life. Every time during a containment breach SCP-AGF has saved lives by directing Foundation staff where to go and how to avoid hostile SCP's. SCP-AGF is even has a friendly relationship with SCP-ALF as they often have breakfast, brunch, lunch, linner, dinner, and desert together. SCP-AGF has also proven helpful in testing with paranormal based containment and weaponry. But of course, Foundation staff are forbidden form doing anything that will harm SCP-AGF even if slightly.

Here you have a little sketch of my main idea for human!Duke. His design in the series is pretty over the top in comparassion to everyone else, so I decided to roll with that. Also yes, the other two wings didn't fit in the canvas, but he has them. There's always one wing per cargo.
Anyways, it's time for a random sketch dump!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are my first two little animations! A hand and one of Certry's eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A skelly dude meets three magenta blobs (my OCs).
The night sky decided to look back at you.
Some... weird places where you can buy things.
A very messy and kinda ugly sketch I did at like 1 am of Certry.
Tumblr media
Aaaaand (one of) my RT OCs! This is a fankid for Kay and Alf, he's currently named Kyle. He is a soft guy that is pretty powerful (sometimes damgerously so), but he prefers to just relax and work from home rather than train with his dads.

Caring For His Boy
First posted: December 17, 2018
Focuses on: Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne
Favorite bookmark: None worth noting
Tier: In the bottom 3rd for most metrics; in the bottom 10 for comments
This is my “behind the scenes” series where I indulge myself horribly by annotating my fics. Link to the fic itself above. Thoughts below the cut.
Another BatFam Christmas stocking fic, another attempt at a dual meaning title. They just make me happy, okay.
This one was for @renecdote: "Created to fill renecdote's BatFam Christmas Stocking prompt "Bruce worrying over sick or injured kids." I don't know that this is quite what you had in mind, but hopefully it's okay."
It was my first time writing Alfred POV, which made me nervous, but also it was fun—though I hadn't yet befriended Audrey to be my Brit speak check. Alas.
It was 8 AM in Sheffield, a glorious, soft morning with a whisper of a breeze and birdsongs that filtered in through the open window.
Why Sheffield? We don't know. That's just how the opening line popped into my head, so then I had to scramble to figure out what was going on and why.
Bruce had never been one to show emotion, even as a boy. Animation was doled out purposefully, as a tool, as a distraction, as a lever. Alfred had more practice reading him than most, and he didn’t think he was imagining the quiver of tension in Bruce’s voice.
This is one of those bits that I work myself into a frustration over, because do I think that Bruce was a generally reserved child? Yes. Was that heightened further after the death of his parents? Also yes. Would stiff-upper-lip British reserve Alfred note Bruce's own emotional reticence as something exceptional? I'm not sure. Whether a thing is true or not is irrelevant when the question is whether the POV would note it.
What did sick mean? A reaction to fear toxin? A new horror from Ms. Isley?
Alfred is so exceedingly British.
It had certainly been a learning experience, one filled with more than a little uncertainty on everyone’s part, but Alfred had yet to hear Bruce sound so shaken.
Ah, the true terror of help, I need an adult... what do you mean I am the adult???
He wondered how Bruce was dealing with the vomit. The boy had always been a bit of a sympathetic puker.
Alfred would not say puker. This is a from-real-life trait I pulled from the males in my family. Weak stomachs, all of them.
“Master Dick will need to stay hydrated. I recommend alternating ginger ale for the nausea and one of those obnoxious sports drinks you so enjoy for the electrolytes. If he continues to complain of aches, you may give him the paracetamol in the upstairs medicine cabinet, but mind the dosage.”
I did the googling for this and then years later had to do the googling again for my first fic in the Mutual Aid series. Ah, parallels. At least I remembered to have Alf call it paracetamol. Also, when I was a kid, I only associated Gatorade with vomiting for this very reason and couldn't drink it for years. Same with Sprite. (Don't drink Sprite, the sugar will make your nausea worse.)
Alfred had several fond memories of sitting next to the bedside of one sweaty-haired boy, a hand pinning open a book, and the other resting atop small fingers. He also had other memories, dimmer but no less visceral, of being a relatively young man himself, faced with the enormous responsibility of caring for a vulnerable life. Of keeping a brave face while internally despairing of the task before him. He was glad that one set of these memories had stuck with Bruce, while the other had not.
Ah, adulthood. It's scary to look back and realize how much your own parents were likely panicking over things you trusted them to handle. 😅
Alfred fics always get some of the lowest engagement and it's such a pity.

Heathers AU 80’s Pop Culture Interests
Veronica: Loves classical literature, John Hughs movies, and Disney movies. Enjoys an occasional fantasy film like The Princess Bride, Willow and Legend (the Tom Cruise movie where Tim Curry plays the devil btw). can usually be found B Dalton Booksellers at the Sherwood Mall pouring through its collection on the weekend. Developed an interest in Transformers from her friendship with Dan.
Martha: Particularly enjoys cute things. A huge movie fan and a bit of film snob, she loves Princess Bride above all else. Likes Jim Henson projects, Disney, My Little Pony, She-Ra, Peanuts, ALF, Garfield, Heathcliff, and sitcoms like Punky Brewster, Saved By The Bell and Mama’s Family.
Dan: Wears his interests proudly. Transformers, ALF and Disney Ducks, specifically DuckTales, are his top interests. Likes sci-fi and fantasy movies like The Last Starfighter, Wizards, Dragonslayer, The Dark Crystal, The Flight of Dragons, They Live, Enemy Mine, and The Transformers: The Movie. Famously he was the only one in his friend group back in Hawkins, NOT traumatized by the death of Optimus Prime. Can usually be found at Waldenbooks, KB Toys, Hills and Ames looking for books and Transformers. Likes sitcoms like Family Matters, Doogie Howser and Growing Pains.
JD: Likes chaos and dinosaurs, especially when the two go together. Dabbles in classic literature, and likes Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde in particular. His favorite non Slushee thing is the trading card series Dinosaurs Attack!. Likes The Transformers, with his favorite teams being the Dinobots and Terrorcons. He also likes Soundwave’s two dinosaur cassettes Overkill and Slugfest. Enjoys westerns, schlocky monster/Kaiju movies, RoboCop, the Mad Max series, Escape From New York, The Terminator, Hellraiser, Critters, The Dark Crystal (mostly because of how gnarly the Skeksis look), The Secret of NIHM, Rock & Rule, and shooting games like Operation Wolf and Duck Hunt. Also enjoys crime shows like Wiseguy and Hunter.
Red Heather: Enjoys romance and mystery movies like Cocktail, Dirty Dancing, Body Double, The Bedroom Window and Vision Quest. Looks down on those who still watch cartoons at their age like Dan and Specs, despite she herself liking a good Bugs Bunny cartoon once and awhile. Enjoys teen gossip magazines like Teen Beat, ‘Teen, and Super Teen, but doesn’t read much otherwise.
Green Heather: A closet Muppets, Indiana Jones and Star Wars fan. Particularly likes the Ewok spin off movies, but desperately tries to hide this from the other Heathers. Absolutely hates romance movies like Can’t Buy Me Love, and chafes when Red Heather forces her to watch them for movie night. Has a thing for musicals like The Phantom of the Opera, Starlight Express and Cats.
Gold Heather: Despite her sweet demeanor and appearance, she LOVES horror and slasher movies like Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Child’s Play, Army of Darkness, Creepers, and Fright Night. The bloodier and more chaotic, the better. Red and Green are too disturbed to really judge or comment and just let Gold enjoy herself. She also dabbles in anime because of Specs, owning a Doraemon keychain he gifted her clipped to her purse. When asked by others, she denies knowing what it is and just found it cute in a crude attempt to protect her reputation.
Specs: HUGE Star Wars fan. Had he survived, he would also be a fan of the Prequels and Sequels, mostly happy there’s more movies to enjoy and analyze, despite agreeing the sequels aren’t that great. Big anime fan, enjoying stuff like Space Adventure Cobra, Demon City Shinjuku, Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX, Doraemon, Saint Seiya, Space Warrior Baldos, Robot Carnival, Giant Gorg, Ronin Warriors and Sherlock Hound, but particularly loves Tatsunoko Productions like the various Time Bokan series and Tekkaman.
Kurt: Enjoys stuff like Conan the Barbarian, TMNT, He-Man, Thundercats, Thundarr the Barbarian, Blackstar and Bravestarr, but hides it initially. He-Man is his jam, and is both his “gay awakening” and the reason he started working out and getting into sports. Once admitted to Dan that Prince Adam/He-Man is his idol and who he strived to be, but failed and instead became an Evil Warrior like Two-Bad (in conjunction with Ram). Likes to collect He-Man toys but is often in a disguise when going to places like KB Toys to find them. Similarly likes collecting He-Man and TMNT comics but tries to hide them In between workout and swimsuit magazines. Also reads the gay model magazine Stud Puppy, but isn’t as good at hiding it… Actually got to model for Stud Puppy in his early twenties as part of a personal milestone.
Ram: A big TMNT fan, especially the movies and video games, but initially hides it. Is actually a pretty big gamer when he’s not playing football, and frequents the arcades to play the games albeit in disguise. An expert BurgerTime, Pole Position, Contra, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong player, and is very fond of Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Isn’t particularly great at sports games like ExciteBike and Track & Field ironically. A casual fan of Star Wars, and unsurprisingly his favorite part of Return of the Jedi is the slave Leia stuff. Enjoys testosterone charged movies like Top Gun, The Running Man, Commando, Bloodsport, Big Trouble in Little China and The Warriors.
Betty: Similar tastes to Veronica and Martha. Seems particularly into Care Bears, ironic given her cruelty later on. Likes sitcoms like Family Ties, The Golden Girls and Nightcourt.
Jamie: Shares Dan, Kurt, Ram and Spec’s interests. Big Dungeons & Dragons kid and loves the cartoon. Big movie guy like Martha. Enjoys stuff like V, Quantum Leap, TerraHawks, Poltergeist, Batteries Not Included and Flight of the Navigator.
Thrash: Shares Ram’s interest in testosterone based movies. Big Arnold Schwarzenegger and Slyvester Stallone fan.
Throttle: Like Veronica, he is a bit of a bibliophile, and enjoys classic literature. Likes Steven King and the Dune series in particular.

All TV series I've ever seen II
Let's see how many I remember from this time period.
1940 - 1970
1980 - 2000 (this post)
2010 - Now
1983 - V
Aliens have come to Earth but they are nice and willing to help us... or so they say.
Everybody remembers Diana eating rats, the dramatic face reveal of any reptilian, Freddy Krueger beeing a good guy (this time) and I'm sure Stephenie Meyers wish that Reneesme/Jacob had the same level of acceptance than "the child from the stars" (name given in Latinoamerica, don't know if it was also used in the original show) and whats-his-name.
Saw it on TV but we also bought the bootleg DVD because my mom and aunt never saw the ending of the show as kids.
1985 - Amazing Stories
I hardly remember anything (I was too young when it was played on TV) but I do remember beeing traumatized by Christopher Lloyd's severed (and reattached) head.
It was created by Spielberg, some stories land better than other ones. Maybe I should try and rewatch some?
1986 - Sledge Hammer
Is he sexist, violent, gun-lover and conservative AF? Yes... but he's also hilarious! This is satire people! Don't be like the NRA that gave somekind of award to this fictional character because they have the same level of comprehension than a brick.
Saw it on TV but it is also available on Youtube.
1986 - ALF
Alien finds himself on a typical american family house and chaos begins.
Do you live under a rock? Don't you know who ALF is? Just go watch it.
It was on TV when I was growing up, I'm pretty sure you can find it anywhere.
1989 - The Simpsons
I will keep on saying it, we argentineans speak in 3 languages: Spanish, Lunfardo (a Buenos Aires dialect but each province has their own as well) and Simpsons' quotes (latin spanish obviously, everyone agrees that it's the definitive Simpsons). Earlier seasons are better, we all know that... they kind of lose us when the original latin dubbers were replaced (it would seem that Disney brought them back but I hardly watch TV now, so I don't know)
1989 - Eureeka's castle.
I don't remember a THING about it but my family says that I was obsessed. It's a Muppet-style show of a young witch apprentice and her friends.
Upon further looking, it was co-written by R. L. Stine? So I didn't got into Goosebumps as a child but got this... who knows?
1989 - Agatha Christie's Poirot
I haven't watched everything just yet (it's been on for 20 years, people!) but I do like David Suchet's Hercules Poirot (my family disagrees because for them Poirot will always be Peter Ustinov). Hey, at least it's not Albert Finney!
1990 - Caloi en su tinta (Caloi in his own ink - Argentina)
It wasn't a series properly said... it didn't have a story to follow. Caloi was a very important artist in my country (his character Clemente became a staple in our comics just like Mafalda) and he had this TV show where he curated animations of all kinds, from all over the world. I remember seeing a stop-motion version of Barber of Sevilla and I think that I also saw Queen's Innuendo videoclip for the first time in here.
Some stories were funny, others melancholic, elegant or grotesque... but all of them were Art, with a capital A.
1990 - Twin Peaks
I don't understand the hype around this show. The only thing that I though was cool was to have a season and a half to find the killer.
Before someone tells me "you have to think how ground breaking it was in the time it came up" or "it's high end art, open your mind to it" trust me I can do that... it doesn't change the fact that I don't see why so many people like it so much.
I'll grant it a few points for showing us David Duchovny as a trans woman FBI agent that saves the day on the episode she shows up. I did like the character.
1993 - The Nanny
What would happen if instead of María taking care of Von Trapp's children in the Alps, we had a jewish it-girl from Flushing, Queens? That was Fran Drescher's pitch, the rest is history.
I got to confess I usually get bored with sit-coms but this is the only one that I can watch over and over again (and the final episode still brings single tear in my eye). Yeah, the whole plot of Fran trying to get pregnant was dragged for too long, but still it's like 3 or 4 episodes, no biggy (unless my memory fails, it's been a while).
1993 - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
For whatever reason a alien (?) race decided that teenagers are the appropiate warriors so they choose 5 Angel Grove locals to kick Galactic-Witch Rita's ass. Monsters that grow size but still look like rubber suits, the Rangers use spandex but for whatever reason they release sparks when a blade touches them. Still sweet little 4 year old me loved this show.
I checked a few episodes on Youtube not too long ago and I was pleasently surprised by the fact that each monster represented a struggle the Rangers where having on their civilian life... so facing and defeating them actually helped these kids in their ordinary life. A nice message that I completely forgot while self-convincing myself that this show was a lot dumber than I remembered.
Oh! By the way when it was on TV I watched -maybe- up to season 2. When the movie came out I was shocked that Jason, Trini and Zack were not in it.
1993 - The X Files
The most recognizable tune ever, the OG monster-of-the-week format, a skeptic + a believer, some comedy, another bit of drama and , in ocassions, straight-up horror = one of the greatest TV shows ever made.
Regardless what people think I preffer Agent Dogget (there, I said it!!) to Mulder, but of course that sunflower-seed eater, porn aficionado, spooky guy will always be loved either way.
Of course I didn't watched on TV (my mom and aunt had that privilege, I was literally a baby) but I got the whole series on bootleg DVD.
1993 - Frasier
I only watched a few mixed up episodes and I have the first 4 seasons on bootleg DVD but it was my aunt who liked it the most.
A psicologyst with a radio TV show has to live with his dad and his brother visits very often.
You might recognize them as Sideshow Bob and his brother as well.
1994 - Friends
Watched it on cable when I had it, mixed up as usual but still... for whatever reason sitcoms bore me... and this is not the exception. Again, I don't understand the hype.
1995 - Xena: Warrior princess
Ancient Greece, a female warrior... my (probably by the time we got it in Argentina) 6 year-old self loved this show. Until certain fling with Hercules... I didn't liked romance then (or now, but I'm a little more tolerant as an adult) and it ruined the show for me.
Yes, now I see certain undertones that my youngself didn't. I get it. Leave me alone!
1995 - Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
Yeah... I didn't liked Hercules but I watched a few episodes either way. I always liked a good fight on TV.
1996 - Sabrina, the teenage witch
Who didn't wanted to have magical powers growing up becuse of her?
I can't really tell how many season I've watched because, as I said, in Argentina you were lucky if the TV channels bought more than 2 season to repeat on end. Still... I didn't quite liked it as much once she left for collage. Kinda lost its magic *wink, wink*
1996 - Millenium
The year 2000 was upon us and the promise of the end of the world, so Chris Carter decided to play a little bit with it.
Frank Black is a retired agent that has a peculiar way of getting into the mind of the criminals (the audience is the only one that knows that he can see what the criminals see... live) so he is called over an over again to help on different cases.
It ended too soon (got cancelled I believe) but it has its final episode in season 9 of The X Files (if I'm not mistaken). It deals a lot with religion (mostly Christianity) and its a lot darker than Mulder & Scully's adventures (with the exception of that one episode where 4 demons get together in a coffe shop -desguised as old men- and tell their latest works done).
1997 - Meego
I got to be honest with you... I hardly remember anything from this TV show. It was basically ALF but with a human playing an alien instead of a puppet. Still we remember it fondly at home so I guess it was good enough?
1998 - Charmed
Argentina beeing Argentina, I saw a few seasons... maybe... I do remember that I liked more the original 3 sisters.
It's fun... sometimes cheesy... as any tv or film of that time.
1998 - Will & Grace
As I said, sitcoms end up becoming boring and repetitive. But that doesn't take away that sometimes jokes are good... some are very 90, but ah, well...
2000 - Dark Angel
Maybe I saw 2 season on TV but I was obsessed.
Typical supersoldiers experiments developed this superhuman creatures that got tired of beeing an experiment and broke out the facility when they were children, so now as grown ups live in our society. The lead Max (Jessica Alba) has a job as a courrier but every now and then steals, that's how she meets Logan a journalist with vigilante tendencies that needs someone to do the dirty work.
2000 - CSI (later known as Las Vegas)
Have I ever watched a show just to laugh at it? Yes, and it was called CSI, the original (I saw a lot of Miami as well).
I had a few glimpses here and there from this procedural that were the definition of Deus-ex-machina and later I decided to give it a shot just to see if, within this universe, it made sense. And nope.
If one of mom's doctors dissed House for his nearly-impossible diagnosis... I'm pretty sure some forensics did the same with Grissom's team.
Side note I really love Ted Danson, that guy is awesome.
2001 - Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
At first I thought it was a yet another The Brain + Person that explains him like many others... but Goren and Eames are the best detective duo. PERIOD.
You get to see them investigating (so Goren, mostly, doesn't know everything off the bat... he does go to the library, kids) and Eames is not just a blank space for the audience to jump in and have Goren explain everything to her. My favourite moments are when she can add up to his theory by just having the female side of things.
Goren isn't the typical I-only-think kind of detective (like, let's say Poirot) he can -and will- get into dangerous situations when needed.
You have to watch for D'onofrio's performance.
I like Jeff Goldblum as well... but his season was kinda... meh
2002 - Los Simuladores (The Pretenders - Argentina)
What if there was a group of people to solve any kind of situations? And what if this situations are quite basic, borderline stupid, like meeting the in-laws, giving a hard exam at the end of the year and such?
This is it, that's the plot.
This was a huge hit back in the day but it took me a decade (almost) to watch because if you knew argentinean tv and film as I do... you wouldn't believe that there are actually some good ideas burried very very deep in the mud.
2002 - Monk
A detective with OCD is soooo good at his job but cannot be a detective again because of it (it got worse once his wife died in a attack). Fun and wholesome... maybe it did dragged for too long.
And no matter what... we are Sharona stans in this house!
2002 - CSI Miami.
Just like CSI I watched it just to make fun of it (and because in cable they will put all CSIs together in one afternoon so it was easier to compare them).
At least this one didn't take itself too seriously!
2003 - Tru Calling
Med student has a weird ability where dead people can reach her and make her repeat the day to try and save their lives.
It ended too soon on a great cliffhanger that we will never see resolved. Damn it!
2004 - Lost
We all know Lost... it started great... and it ended.
Luckily for me the TV channel where I was watching it stopped after season 4 and I never bothered to try and catch up again.
2004 - House MD
Sherlock Holmes goes to med school and instead of solving crimes, he solves impossible diagnostics.
Gotta give it to Hugh Laurie for beeing a lovable a-hole the whole time.
It did lasted too long for me, I didn't watch the final seasons but I did watched a few mixed up episodes in cable so I kinda know what happens after, lets say... season 4? (the final one I've watched, maybe).
2004 - CSI New York
Same as the others. Just watched for Gary Sinise and Edward Furlong's guest appearence.
2004 - Miss Marple
I was never a fan of Miss Marple in writting... but on TV she is less annoying.
How come she is never suspicious? She's always around when a crime happens!
2005 - Invasion
Does anybody else remembers this TV show set after the Katrina hurricane that, apparently, also uncovered a race of aliens living underwater that have a body-snatching way of taking over the world? It's only 1 season, got cancelled I believe and I watched it on TV at 6 or 7 AM while getting ready to go to school. Ah, old times!
2005 - Mosca & Smith (Argentina)
(Mosca can be translated as "Fly" -the bug- but in this case is the character's Last Name so I'll leave it as it is)
Buddy cop with two overly eccentric characters. A silly comedy with some really in-depth meta humor of argentinean justice system. Some jokes are in poor taste... and I think it got raunchier in it's second season (I didn't watched it because one of the leads was replaced and the 2nd actor didn't had the same punch)
2005 - Bones
A forensic anthropologyst helps the FBI to solve crimes.
This is the BrainTM taken to an extreme. Dr. Temperance Brennan just can't be good at eeeeeverything. This kinda changed as seasons passed but still... who says smart people is always entirely clueless about how to be a normal human? And why so egocentric? (Most truly smart people are usually super-humble because they know that there is a lot more to learn).
In any case, it is fun. Watched on TV (earlier seasons) and continued on bootleg DVD.
2006 - Ugly Betty
The main reason why I didn't listed Betty, la fea in here it's because it is a telenovela (soap opera) everybody in Latinoamérica watched it. Some things are not so good (maybe I'll write about it one day) but overall it had a good story.
Those dubious things got changed in the U.S version... and it changed the whole story. It was easier to create something new than trying to bring people on board using a name that is well beloved to a certain ethnicity... just saying.
2007 - El Hombre que volvió de la muerte (The man that came back from Death -Argentina)
Think of a mash up of The Count of Montecristo and V for Vendetta.
It was a remake of a TV show done in the 60s... 70s? By Narciso Ibañez Menta, a Spanish actor that was naturalized as argentinean and was our very own mix of Boris Karloff (with his love for make up) and Vincent Price (he did a lot of Edgan Allan Poe stories as well). The original story was about Elmer Van Hess, who was subject to different experiments. The lab caughts on fire, he's inside and survives. For whatever reason his organs end up being given to other people so he embarks on a quest to retrieve them.
The remake also had Elmer Van Hess who was a happy fool about to get married, his boss and associates set him up and ends up in prision for fraud. Not happy with that, his boss strikes a deal with a Doctor so Elmer can be his human guinea pig (in order to do so, he asks other inmates to torture him while in prision so his only escape would be to go with the Doctor). He's experimented on as results he gets superhuman strenght and, of course, the chemicals affect his brain turning him into a very dark and blood-lust creature. The lab is set on fire, everybody thinks he died but he comes back 10 years later ready to take revenge on all of them. He was very cruel and his idea of revenge was very Saw-like... but deep down he's still in love with his almost-wife and she's the only one that can sort of ease him in the worst moments.
For an argentinean fiction it was very good.
2008 - Fringe
The X Files but even crazier? You got it.
Mom and I did got lost after season 4... but we still have the bootleg DVDs, it's just that we should start all over again and we don't have a lot of time 😝
2008 - The Mentalist
A guy is so good at reading people that decides to ripp them off saying that he's a medium. He got the wrong guy, this guy kills his family so now it's personal!
Patrick Jane's quirks might be amusing in the early episodes but after a while you, just like everyone else on the show, will want to punch him in the face.
From my little corner of the Earth I scream: Justice for Cho!! He also deserved a happy ending!
2009 - Doll House
A bunch of people got their memories wiped and now they receive other memories (fabricated sometimes) to take on dangerous tasks.
Dubious consent galore... but overall the premise was engaging. It lasted 3 seasons, the third one included a time-jump... the end didn't quite landed for me but... meh! It's entertaining at least.
2009 - Flashfoward
The entire world fainted at the same time. Everybody had visions of the future... so now some things need to be prevented for whatever reason.
Only one season, got cancelled. I don't remember a thing except the tribute to one of Jorge Luis Borges stories (El Jardín de los senderos que se bifurcan/ The garden of paths that bifurcate) and another to David Bowie's song Scary Monsters and Super Creeps. That's all I remember, I swear.
2009 - Modern Family
Sitcom that broke some barriers on what a typical family looks like. It's fun...but yeah, it also bored me.
Note to everybody: not all latinos sound like Sofía Vergara... not even Sofía Vergara sounds like Sofía Vergara the whole time.

Contains a slightly different ACGAS 4x01 synopsis:
All Creatures Great and Small (Thursday 05/10/23, Channel 5, 9pm)
Words by Scheenagh Harrington
A well-known online encyclopaedia describes the literary version of Siegfried Farnon as “outspoken, opinionated, bossy, quick to lose his temper, and also quick to blow over”.
As lovers of this drama know all too well, he is based on Donald Sinclair, the Yorkshire vet who was immortalised by partner Alf Wight in the James Herriott stories.
Viewers of a certain age will forever associate the role of Siegfried with the incomparable Robert Hardy, who brought the character so vividly to life in the 1978 television series.
What is less well known is that Sinclair wasn’t especially keen on Hardy’s portrayal of him, despite the fact the thespian based his performance on Sinclair’s “eccentricities”.
Luckily, it didn’t prevent the pair from later becoming firm friends, with Hardy remarking he wished he had got to know Sinclair sooner. “It would have helped me to perfect a much more interesting character,” he mused.
Fast-forward to 2020 and it’s Samuel West who takes on the role of the curmudgeonly vet for the series reboot.
He described his alter-ego as “a man of honour”, and believed Siegfried had evolved over the series to become a “deeper and more serious” character. However, the actor said he wanted to retain the sense of him being a bit of a “loose cannon, because that’s fun to play.”
For the uninitiated, Samuel’s mum and dad are veteran stars Prunella Scales and Timothy West, while his grandfather was actor Lockwood West.
Samuel’s CV reads like every wannabe thespian’s dream, working in theatre, film, television and radio. His dulcet tones have enhanced countless documentaries, but he has also appeared as a reciter with orchestras, even performing at the 2002 Last Night of the Proms.
Born in 1966, he first appeared on the TV in the 1975 drama series Edward the Seventh, and made his London stage debut in 1989 at the Orange Tree Theatre, playing Michael in Cocteau’s Les Parents Terribles, and got rave reviews.
Thirteen years later came his stage directorial debut with The Lady’s Not for Burning at the Minerva Theatre, before his radio directing debut with a 2011 production of Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s Money on BBC Radio 3.
Samuel has racked up countless appearances on the small and big screen, and one thing connects them all: no matter how big or small they are, they are always great.
He’s the ideal choice then, for Siegfried, who we find trying to hold Skeldale House together singlehandedly, as the curtain goes up on series four of this evergreen drama.
It is spring 1940 and change is on the horizon for everyone. Without Tristan, Skeldale House is busier than ever. The war hasn’t come to much, prompting James and Helen to dream about the future, hoping that he won’t be called up.
Meanwhile, a chance encounter leaves the vet worrying if a dog is being mistreated. True to form, James wants to ‘put the animal first’ regardless of the consequences.
At the same time, Siegfried finds himself repeatedly called out by experienced farmer Clifford Slavens and has to learn that everyone needs a bit of support during hard times. So, when Mrs Hall takes a leap of faith, he’s on hand to do so.
The cast also includes Nicholas Ralph, Rachel Shenton and Anna Madeley.

Got tagged by @paulinedorchester to weigh in with my thoughts about what the heck Tristan Farnon is going to be doing with himself at the end of Season 3 of All Creatures Great and Small.
I, too, was, a bit confused about what the Royal Army Veterinary Corps would be doing, given David Webster's line at the end of Band of Brothers - "What are you DOING? You still have HORSES? Say hello to Ford and GENERAL FUCKING MOTORS."
It is true - demand for animals in the face of mechanization was declining. In 1938 the Army Veterinary School at Aldershot closed, and in 1942 the Army Remount Service, responsible for training and providing replacement horses, merged with the RAVC. Horses were still in use for Household Cavalry regiments at home, but nearer the front line there was still a demand for pack animals (and thus a need for a vet) in places where roads and local infrastructure couldn't support trucks. The North African and Italian campaigns, for instance, saw a lot of mule and camel usage. (Anyone wanting a truly different war animal story will have to check out Elephant Company, by Vicki Constantine Croke, about a group of partisans/irregulars operating in Burma with - you guessed it - elephants.)
And it wasn't just pack animals - The RVAC and US Army Veterinary Corps also provided working military dogs, which were trained for a variety of uses. The US Army Veterinary Corps also was (and continues to be) highly involved in food safety, especially in the pre-industrial era where Quartermaster Corps cooks might be doing their own butchering out in the field.
(For a bit of context about this story and World War two in general - Donald Sinclair, Alf Wight's partner and the man that Siegfried is based on, did sign up for the RAF; he was discharged after six months and returned to his practice. If memory serves, it's James that gets that storyline in the original 1970s series.)

Can you do a headcannon about pat from postman pat please
Patrick Clifton, also known as "Postman Pat", is a main character of British stop motion animated children's television series from September 1981 to March 2017. He is the postman who lives in an English village of Greendale with his wife Sara and their son Julian and their pet black-and-white cat named Jess in the United Kingdom.
He works as a postman for the Royal Mail postal service in the fictional village of Greendale (inspired by the real valley of Longsleddale near Kendal).
He brought Jess with him to accompany him as he delivers the post through the valley of Greendale. Although he initially concentrates on delivering his letters, he nearly always becomes distracted by a concern of one of the villagers, and is always keen to help resolve their problems.
Notable villagers include the postmistress, Mrs. Goggins; farmer couple Alf and Dorothy Thompson; the Reverend Timms; PC Selby, the police constable; Jeff Pringle, the school teacher; Peter Fogg, a farm hand; George Lancaster, a chicken farmer; Miss Hubbard, an upper-class woman; Julia Pottage, who runs Greendale Farm and Ted Glen, the local handyman and inventor.
In the spin-off series, Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service, Pat has been promoted to Head of the SDS and is now called upon to deliver anything. Each episode follows Postman Pat on a Special Delivery mission, from rescuing a runaway cow to delivering a giant ice cube. In his new role, Postman Pat commutes to the nearby town of Pencaster where he collects his special deliveries from the Pencaster Mail Centre. Postman Pat now has a newer fleet of vehicles including a bigger van, gyrocopter, 4x4 Jeep and motorbike, complete with side-car for Jess. He has a new boss, Ben, who tends to give him instructions (whereas he was his own master before the "promotion"). Pat also seems to make more mistakes in his work since moving to SDS, largely because the new format is always based on one delivery, which has to go wrong somehow (thus often because of Pat's errors).
In the 2014 animated comedy film "Postman Pat the Movie", Pat is planning to take his wife, Sara on a late honeymoon to Italy. He tries to afford it through a bonus from his employer, the Special Delivery Service (SDS), but their new boss, Edwin Carbunkle, has cancelled all bonuses. He plans to make SDS more efficient by replacing its human workers with robots, thinking that being friendly is a waste of time.
When Pat gets home and tries to tell Sara about the fact that the honeymoon is cancelled because the new boss has cancelled all bonuses, his son Julian shows him a television talent show, "You're the One", hosted by Simon Cowbell, who states the next auditions are coming to Greendale. Cowbell also confirms that the person who wins the contest will be awarded a holiday to Italy and a recording contract.
Pat decides to take part in the contest and his unexpected singing voice (Ronan Keating) wins the contest. Pat is to sing again in the finale, in a head-to-head contest with the winner of another heat, Josh. His Scottish-accented manager, Wilf, however, is very keen to make sure it is his client who wins at all costs.
The CEO of the SDS, Mr. Brown, and Carbunkle had been watching the contest on television. They say that they would like to use Pat in a publicity campaign including his own television series. Carbunkle also confirms that because Pat will be away participating in the contest, a robot replica of him called the "Patbot 3000" will be taking over his postal duties, along with another robot replica of Jess called the "Jessbot" as well.
After Pat and Jess are gone, the Patbot delivers the rounds like Pat normally does, but it behaves oddly and the people of Greendale are starting to complain about Pat behaving in such a way. Sara and Julian are starting to worry about Pat too. Meanwhile, Ben Taylor (TJ Ramini), the manager at the SDS, is fired by Carbunkle and is convinced that Pat doesn't want him anymore, not realising that Pat is a robot. Meanwhile, Wilf tries his schemes to stop Pat, not realising that the "Pat" going around Greendale is in fact a robot but they all backfire. The more Pat's family and friends become concerned, the more Pat feels guilty about coming on the contest in the first place.
And despite Pat's efforts to tell his wife the truth about why he entered the competition, he fails and starts to become fearful that he might have pushed his family away. It isn't until shortly after Pat's departure for the final competition that Ben and Jess discover that there appears to be more than one Pat and Edwin Carbunkle's true intent is exposed. It turns out that Carbunkle is in fact an evil megalomaniac and is making these robots to try and take over the world. Ben then rushes to tell Sara and Julian the terrible truth about Mr Carbunkle's plan.
Now fully aware of Carbunkle's plan, a desperate Sara informs the whole of Greendale about Carbunkle's true intentions and explaining that deep down, Pat has not changed. They all agree to head to London to support Pat, in an effort to thwart Carbunkle's plan. Meanwhile, Jess, who has stowed away on one of the SDS helicopter replicas that one of the Patbot 3000s used, manages to make his way to where Pat's performance, and he helps Pat escape after he is locked away in a dressing room by a Patbot and Carbunkle, who reveals that Pat's publicity was just to make people like him, so Mr Carbunkle could replace him with Patbots. They are then pursued by the Patbots and the Jessbot but manages to outsmart them all and get inside the theater.
Meanwhile, in the performance, a Patbot performs instead of Pat, unbeknownst to the audience. Wilf arrives, knowing it to be a robot (after defeating a Patbot with a magnet at the sorting officer earlier), uses a magnet to unmask the Patbot. Then, the real Pat interrupts the performance and gives a speech on what's really important and how he forgot to take time for those he really cares about. As Carbunkle releases the first few Patbots to kill off Pat, Simon and Brown, revealing that he has had enough of them hindering his plans, Josh saves them by using Carbunkle's phone to turn off all the Patbots before they can kill Pat, Cowbell and Brown. Little does Pat know that his wife and friends from Greendale arrive in the chaos.
After Brown fires Carbunkle and has him arrested, everything is back to normal. Unaware that Sara is listening, Pat expresses that he is only doing this competition to win the flight tickets for their honeymoon. Sara is suddenly heard calling Pat's name. Once Pat catches sight of Sara, Julian and all the people of Greendale in the audience, it dawns on him that Sara has heard the truth about why he entered the competition and is fully aware of Carbunkle's plan. Now fully aware that Sara has forgiven him. Pat decides to do his act but decides to change it slightly.
In the end, Pat sings Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours with Brown, Josh, Wilf and the people of Greendale joining in. Sara also takes part in the act. They both win the holiday to Italy but pass the recording contract to Josh, so Wilf is happy too, and all is forgiven.

Genuine question
Does anyone have the “ALF animated adventures” DVD from 2006,if so is there a difference from the episodes there to the episodes on Tubi and SHOUT factory? In a podcast episode I listened to,they mentioned to scene that wasn’t in the episode at all when I watched it.The scene was of Rick just telling these alien shrimp guys stuff about Melmac, and apparently there were starting to get sick and tired of him explaining Melmac to them (the episode is Season 1 EP 12: Tough shrimp don’t dance)
There was also apparently a song that got cut from a episode (someone mentioned this on Reddit so idk if it was just bad memory on their part or not)

As long as you're looking at random asks: I remember seeing Cakey, the Cake From Outer Space posted on Craftster, and only recently realised you were associated with that. Does someone still have the puppet? I seem to remember there was a lot of caulk involved and have always been curious how it held up.
Thank you for your kind question and even more for not calling me "mommy."
Cakey the Cake from Outer Space was a web series I wrote/directed (with co-creator/puppeteer Kirk Damato and my roommate Bill Buckendorf on editing/cinematography) It was a goofy Alf-type sitcom where everything was... off. We made episodes for Channel 102 and then Adult Swim's SuperDeluxe (first incarnation) commissioned more episodes, but then imploded, so no one ever saw them officially (they're all over the web now. Do a google and find Cakey if you want)
Tumblr media
A still from Cakey that a rando put a much less funny joke on top of but that's meme's for ya!
I haven't seen Cakey in years but the puppet wasn't made of professional-grade materials so I'm sure... after all this time... he nasty.
Upholstery foam "cake" with a set in half-circle mouth in lighter foam sheets. Outside entirely frosted with heavy paint mixed with caulk and piping was done with a pastry bag with more caulk. Chocolate sprinkles and cherries were FIMO/Sculpey.
The puppet is still owned by Cakey's voice and operator who made a NEW Cakey for his solo project Cakey and the Master (I wasn't involved) The 2nd Cakey puppet looks more foam-y (no frosting) but it is probably more expressive and easier to puppeteer. Old Cakey was tough to work with; a real prima donna baked good on set.
Tumblr media
The original puppet was made by Erika Kern, who was a serious craftster who had done props for my anime-live-on-stage show NeoTokyo GirlCrush at UCB. One of those props was a standard "fake cake" — a cylinder of foam "frosted" with paint — which are made for window displays and as bottom tiers of real cakes. I asked her if it would be possible to cut a face into the side of this cake and make it talk. She ran off and made it.
The idea to make the show was similarly "hey, how 'bout this idea" level planning. We'd walk by this billboard in Chinatown of old people looking at a glowing, levitating birthday cake. All the copy's in Chinese so we have no idea what's even being advertised (I think it was Western Union).
I requested a Black Forest Cake with cherries (leading to a million fucking "The Cake is a Lie" youtube comments.) I also wanted Cakey to have cherry antennas that rose out of his head like My Favorite Martian but she passed on making those. Erica was just guessing how to make a puppet through trial and error... going with whatever looked good.
On filming days, if the room was cold, Cakey would be a solid lump. Kirk had to flex the mouth over and over to warm up the puppet to move it at all. The whole surface was so stiff and the paint on the corners of his mouth chipped off as he spoke, had to be repainted constantly. Cakey's foam rotted on the inside from hand-moisture so the roof of his mouth was always nearly going to tear through.
We made episodes of for a monthly screening called Channel 102 in NY (Later renamed Channel 101-NY to bring it under the same umbrella as LA's Channel 101.) We had less than 4 weeks to make any episode and never if you would get "renewed" until the night of the screening based on audience vote. We had zero budget. No prize. We did it just because we wanted to make a thing.
Did I cover all the unsolved mysteries of Cakey?

30 Days of Autism Acceptance Month 2023
Day 1: Intro
The typical introduction question! Tell us something about yourself. If you can't think of anything, try these: What do you enjoy to do in your free time? What music or series/show do you like? Are you happy with your current living situation/the people you live with? What's one of your favourite foods?
Hi!! I’m Rey!
in my free time: i like to think about fictional characters an ungodly amount, watch tv/movies, edit, read, research stuff, do art, cook/bake, play with (annoy) my cats and rabbit, do makeup, play video games, ummm yeah idk. when i leave my house i like to wander through grocery stores, go to the movie theater, and go to antique/vintage/collectible stores
music i like: (besides disney & musical soundtracks) lady gaga, the chicks, kate bush, liz phair, paramore, dolly parton, elton john, orville peck, backstreet boys, florence & the machine and much more
i like stuff from all genres & decades and like to explore music in other languages as well…
i’m kinda all over the place i’ll listen to beyoncé for 3 days straight and then waltz music for a week and then 50s jazz the next day
tv shows i like: 9-1-1, fraggle rock, supernatural, bluey, ducktales 2017, alf, andi mack, stranger things, doctor who, etc.. big fan of 2000s kids shows from my childhood, chaotic sitcoms, shows with puppets, cartoons/animated, shows with FOUND FAMILY, also political news satire shows… (especially last week tonight<3)
happy with my living arrangement? umm it’s VERY complicated… i live with my parents and sister… i like my house… just not always the people in it… like i would prefer not to live with them but also i can’t live by myself/can’t drive/don’t have a job but i have 3 cats and my room is pretty cool and we live in a rural area so it’s nice and quiet
favorite food: BLACK BEANS AND RICE<3 it’s one of my longest running same foods
(SO glad there are questions because i HATE open ended intros because i never know what to put)
