i think i figured out why i hate the "alina loses her powers" plot. it's probably been said before but i kinda see alina being grisha as i see people being undiagnosed autistic or undiagnosed adhd. you know something is wrong with you and all your life you feel that way. but then you get the diagnosis (alina discovers she is grisha!) and your whole life makes more sense, even your identity becomes clearer. and you finally realize nothing is wrong with you, you were just living according to rules that don't benefit you at all. so taking that away from her by "curing" her of her power just because she wanted to be powerful and she cherished her ability? i hate it.

vein dripping a river of blood onto the velvet carpet. a corpse, nameless & less than a name ; the birth of a monster is a violent affair, but the feeding of one is desperately more gruesome. his victim is chewed long before consumption. past & future ruined in the same fashion as falling skin & dripping juices from a corpse. a more humane person would most certainly shudder with empathy, yet all her thoughts are alarmingly tame. more cruel : all that mess, no one to clean it up. she'll die staining his furniture. the blood starts to pool around her feet. she looks back up. not one thought sacrified at the altar of a benevolent god, asking for her life back. not a bit of attention reserved for her afterlife. all she has become is a meal : it drips blood unto the carpet & stays silent. it will die a quiet, whimpering death. alina watches for as long as she can stomach it, the wound that is her(s), only to look back up, disgusted.

"is that what you want, moi tsar," a growl, pain finally registering, "your teeth in me?"

the feeding of a monster is a grim affair ; it is clashing teeth, nails digging into the soft skin at the base where neck meets shoulder. it is a whimper, one's tongue over the other's sharp teeth, the sweet tang of one's own downfall far more potent than the iron aftertaste of the other's mouth. she licks her blood from his lips & calls it a kiss. she lets herself be angry. lets herself be furious. teeth meet lips : she digs in. for a moment, she can pretend she is naught but a mouth of light-sharp teeth. when she chews on skin, she pretends it is darkness : she will call it exorcism, she will call it miracle, she will say it is healing & banishment all at once. if he shudders beneath her it is simply that she is doing what must be done. whether she is the lamb or the butcher, she prefers not to know.

(there, the long-awaited truth : she is no better. when blood fills the air, she is just as hungry as the hounds.)

a shuddering breath, the word whipsered against lantsov's mouth, "nikolai", the weakness so evident in her voice. the simple uttering of his name is more painful than the wound at her arm. her right hand moves of its own volition, from his shoulder to the back of his head. nails dig in, hair coiled harshly around her fingers. "if you are to make a feast of me, make it count."

female protagonists will literally go through 30 life altering traumas at the age of 16 and you ppl still have the audacity to call them annoying bc they cry about it and act like teenage girls

I actually like it when ships hurt each other in long lasting and unforgiveable ways. I like it when they leave vicious, glaring scars. I like when they leave traumas. I like when they stab each other and torture each other and ruin each other’s lives and violate every inch of each other’s values. and I like it when they fucking kill each other permanently dead.

for people who haven’t read the shadow and bone/ six of crows books, but have seen the show:

- inej ghafa is a survivor of childhood sex trafficking. she has ptsd and reacts in a panic attack at even walking past the menagerie

- kaz’s trauma isn’t just pekka rollins being responsible for jordie’s death, and waking up on the barge. he had to swim to shore, age nine and barely alive, using jordie’s body as a float

- the darkling has done far worse things than are shown on screen. he is not a ‘lost man’ and alina is not his ‘balance’

- alina was seventeen upon the darkling being nsfw/ romantic with her

- matthias helvar did not lead drüskelle, that was jarl brum- matthias is only just barely an adult himself

- the crows are not their own separate gang, they are part of the dregs, who per haskell leads and kaz takes over from haskell after haskell sold out his lieutenant (kaz) to pekka rollins

- zoya, genya, and alina have personalities outside of either being traumatised or hating each other

- alina never wanted any of the power and fame and idolatry, and in the end of the books is stripped of it all. she is very happy about this

- jesper is a gambling addict and somebody who watched the death of his mother

theres something so special to me about alina being always a little sick, a little pale, a little creepy before she discovered her powers.

much of herself has been discovered by chance ; a miracle that she even stumbled upon the parts of her being that reflect light. yet other parts, she has known for years. she has touched their edges & has learned how to keep safely away from the cuts and the cracks. she did not know she was grisha but she knew she was not a murderer. violence does not come easy to her ; it is only when confronted by the darkling's cold shadow and the sword of night above her head, threatening to fall on her spinal cord every time she makes a new choice … then, only then, does she get hungry for blood.

"i can't", is her reply. it is the easy one : one mal would want her to spit to the ground with all the same bravado she has used with him when they were kids and she was too thin to even stand a fight against gravity. but the resolve dissolves quickly -- that sick child is no more, and the power alina wields is so heavy perhaps there is no chance for her to avoid the fate that has been foretold. "if i go that route … if i step foot on that path … what separates me from him?"
