Gabi ⚽ wears comfy clothes, like soft fabric pants or shorts if it's too hot. Colorful and graphic tees, with either funny phrases or cute motifs. She adores the t-shirt uncle Gabriel gifted her when he returned. Full of famous soccer stars signatures. That's her treasure. Her favorite color is blue. Her hair is like Miguel's. Wavy and a deep dark chocolate brown. Her eyes are brown.

She's definitely the prankster (she printed the adoption certificate for Benji jskjs), and the big sister. Gabi is overprotective with Rosie. She's her lil sis after all!. She has even got some matching scrunchies set for the both. Also in charge when Miguel or Mama aren't around. (Still, Miguel would call the spider gang to send one of them to supervise his kids.)

Benjamin 🕷️ is always on the matching sets for earthy colors. He's a a stylish kid when the situation requires it. But when it does not, he's like his Papa. Little sweatpants and cotton shirts with slippers. He's a Mama's boy (Just like Miguel). Not overly spoiled but definitely loved. But don't mention his Spiderman plushie. He's almost 4. Big boy with growing fleckles and a troublemaker. His eyes got a bit more of the red-ish hue of Miguel, (Rosie too btw)

Fought Miguel for Mama's affection when a baby and ate spicy food after. He's a menace. One of the cutest kids in his classroom. White is his favorite color. (Even though Mama and Miguel have to buy extra bleach to keep the food stains away and the white crisp.) He loves teaching Rosie how to walk, even though Rosie is just a couple of months old. He's got Mama's curls.

Rosie 🌹 is a cute chubby baby with a beautymark on her ankle. Her little waves are shill having an identity crisis cause one day she wakes up super wavy, and the other is curly. Just like Benjamin. Definitely a Papa's girl. Red is her color. Mostly of her wardrobe is either red, pink or white with roses or strawberry motifs( She's Miguel's Rosita Fresita after all) full of beautiful headbands aunties Jessica and MJ gifted her in the little belated baby shower they had. Miguel's chest is her favorite place to sleep in (Just like Mama's).

I have this graphic tee shirt with a Gibson SG standard on it, ykno, it's one of my favorite shirts because I like Gibson SGs and I think guitars are awesome. I wear it as an undershirt to work one day and one of my coworkers laughs at it. I'm like "what's so funny?" And she's like "oh, you know, that's like a shirt a guy would wear in a Disney channel sitcoms, some shit that just screams "I like guitars and rock music", to make him seem quirky and edgy". And I was like, well yeah, I do like guitars and rock music, that's why I love this shirt. It's plain, to the point, and doesn't have a bunch of stupid brands all over it. It suits me. I've been thinking of getting one of those shirts with headphones printed around the collar, cus I think shirts like that are fun and express me properly. She kept trying to point out the irony of it but I just wasn't seeing it. I thought it was a cool shirt.

She was an interesting coworker. She had cool interests and was kinda funny at times, but she was always saying kinda mean spirited shit, overly judgemental, always had to have to last word, and played into the whole Zoomer/Millenial "I'm being uber ironic because I fear earnestness and hate seeing other people happy" ideaology. I don't really fuck with cis women with vibes like that, they remind me too much of my mother and my various ex friends I had to drop because their treatment of their peers was just too much for me. I talk to her about music and politics, sometimes bond with her over having an abusive mother, but mostly keep things between as impersonal.

Fast forward a few months and a coworker I was friends with while working there tells me she's transphobic and kinda racist with it, so my gut feeling was correct. All because she was laying into me a little too hard about a tshirt I really liked. This version is focused mainly on work/masc clothing . If anyone has recommendations for more decorative/femme clothing, please share them with me so I can update the post :)

Make sure to check the version number if you see this in the wild, it may have updated!

Recommendations marked with an asterisk (*) means I have no personal experience with them, but I've heard enough good things that I added them to the list.

1. Shirts/Tops

First of all, I'm a huge whore for 100% cotton, but in theory polyester will last longer. On the other hand, polyester will last forever, seeping into fish and local blood streams for millenia to come. Second of all, if you want cool graphics then I'd highly recommend doing it yourself. I'd say the easiest options for getting reliable, long lasting graphic tees are screen printing, tie dye and vinyl decals, but this depends on what resources you have access to. Keep in mind this is for shirts that you'll (hopefully) be able to wear for over a decade since really any decent cotton tee will last a decent amount of time.

Recommendations

-ASCOLOR

These are the best blank t shirts I've found, period. Stitching is great, the fabric is thick, and from what I can tell they're slightly more inclined to ethical production than your average mass produced T-shirts. They also sell nice jackets and coats as well!

I might try out a couple of pairs of pants from them to see what's up.

Band Tees

For some reason these tend to be really solid, depending on how big the artist in question is. Usually printed on Gildan, which ain't bad. They are expensive though, which means they may not be as great of a deal

This would be the section where I talked about stuff that isn't just t shirts but idk any brands that make consistently durable examples for a good price.

2. Pants

I would recommend a maximum of 1-2% elastane if you're getting skinny jeans, otherwise it's 100% cotton denim baby. Durability decrease exponentially the higher percentage of non-denim there is.

Also, I highly recommend selvage jeans if you can afford them. They use a tighter knit and are made to be worn in.

For cargo pants, get something that's thick and has ripstip material.

Recommendations

-Levi's

The lowest in price I would go tbh. I recommend the 502s since they're 100% cotton but 511s have been a staple of the street fashion world for a while. They're skinnier jeans ain't bad either, but I feel like they're starting to hit the edge of being too thin.

-The Unbranded Brand

Focused solely on getting the price of selvage jeans down to affordable levels. Fair warning, I bought a pair of black jeans (with 1% elastane) and the formaldehyde smell still hasn't gone away. I have an indigo pair that smell fine though, and besides that they're my favorite pairs of jeans.

Now most """Tactical Apparel""" stores tend to be a bit...off, but since this is a post about durable clothing, I gotta mention the probably undiagnosed autistic guys with a special interest in manly man pants. I have a pair of 5.11 Canvas Cargo Pants and I've taken these things camping, through outdoor airsoft fields, and underground deathcore moshpits. The bastards still looked mint when I finally handed them off to my partner because my ass got too juicy to wear them and gave me a blister when I spent all morning working for a landscaper. (That job was the final straw in my anti-lawn radicalization arc btw.)

To reiterate, I would look for anything that's ripstip and not paper thin. Nylon also works but the texture sucks.

3. Shoes

Always invest in whatever goes between you and the ground. This goes for mattresses and chairs as well. And for fucks sake get something that can be resoled, and find a cobbler near you. Also look up the Sam Vines Boot Theory of Economics.

Recommendations

Vans

Unlike converse, I've only ever bought one pair. The problem with Vans is the lack of impact absorption, something that can be fixed with aftermarket inserts in theory. Old-Skools take insoles fairly well. Their ComfyCush line is aimed at fixing this problem but I haven't tried any of them. I did get a pair of Ultraranges recently and they seem decently durable, but I've yet to really start wearing into them.

Any skate shoes in general*

Theyre made to be dragged across concrete at relatively high speeds. Try to go for suede.

Solovair*

Now, I have beef with Doc Martens since they sold out, but they're still cheap, comfortable, and made out of leather, which is all you need. Anything lower and I would argue that it's too cheap. However, they can't be resoled, they're leather is kind of thin, and they definitely have a fast fashion mindset.

Solovair is a company that uses the original factories in England to make their own line of lookalikes, for a slightly higher price and slightly higher quality. I've heard their customer service is shit.

Redwing*

I have heard nothing but praise for these. I'm going to buy a pair of Supersole 2.0s once my current pair (which didn't make the list since they kinda went downhill) finally bite it.

Danner*

Another popular recommendation for leather boots.

There is a queer owned boot brand that has canvas and leather boots that are relatively cheap and have cool art but I forgot the name

3. Socks

Chelsea boots but austrialian

Basically either get Darn Tough* or Point6 some decent socks from whatever brand works for you. I highly recommend merino wool hiking socks, and I just wear cotton socks during the summer.

I'm still amazed they're this popular and have this much of a focus on sustainability and longevity. Their sibling, North Face, definitely fell into the consumerism pit years ago but Patagonia has still been chugging along.

Military Surplus

I feel a bit guilty for gatekeeping the specific companies I like, but if you go to the right places (eBay) you can get durable clothing for SUPER cheap. It's usually not the highest quality, but it's better than the same thing from an outlet mall.

Chrome

Mainly a bicycling brand, their bags are the kind of things that last a stupidly long time. The internals of them aren't amazing, mainly just an empty main cavity with a laptop sleeve and a smaller separate pocket, but all of their stuff is rock solid. They also have a solid warranty as well.

Swiss Army

Yes, the knife guys. They haven't changed their looks since the late 90s but their backpacks are designed amazingly well. They also have a limited lifetime warranty. I've noticed some cosmetic wear on mine after a few months of using it pretty roughly, thankfully it's just skin-deep stuff but it's also different to older examples I've seen. Definitely more suited towards carrying books and folders.

[First Part]

The man that stood before him was an absolute dream—tall, tan, with a full head of chestnut hair that Eddie immediately wanted to run his hands through. He was pretty sure his jaw dropped, especially when he noticed the guy was wearing a black graphic tee with several plants printed across the chest, each of their pots a different color to make up the rainbow. Almost like it was for Pride month. The way the shirt was probably a size too small didn’t hurt matters, either. So this guy was dorky, hot, and potentially queer? Eddie wondered if he fell down in his haste to get in here and smacked his head on the pavement. He had to be hallucinating, or at the very least getting ahead of himself. It was June, after all. The guy could just be trying to be supportive. “Can I help you?” the man asked, a friendly smile playing at his lips—which looked perfectly kissable, just to add to Eddie’s distress. Eddie snapped his jaw shut, trying not to overheat when the other man looked him up and down.

But it sounds like you'd still need to get very expensive equipment to even make something halfway decent just for one piece yourself. If only I were born as a graphics tee bro... they have it so easy

ikr, i do screen printing as a hobby and the craft is dominated by graphic tshirt type dudes. i don’t wear tshirts so the whole shebang is completely devoid of appeal to me, and the oversaturation makes it lame. i’m sure there are some plausible handicraft solutions that i’m not aware of, but like with all quality clothing, all quality items in general, it would probably take a good amount of effort. i’ve thought about getting a pair of plain OG-107 pants or the like and screen printing on them directly, but i’ve never seen the product of a similar undertaking so i have no object of reference. if i did experiment with that though i’d have to either design my own or reverse-engineer and old pattern, which sounds equally fun and challenging. registering it would also be difficult, as i’d have to print it in sections without it looking obviously repetitive, sectionalized, or simply off. color blending would be tricky too. the more i think about it tho, the more i want to give it a try. if i ever get around to it i’ll definitely post updates

I'm a HUGE collector, like I collect crystals, tarot decks, dolls and trinkets overall. Even books and stickers too. They're literally all over my room especially figures too. On my walls there are also things such as coasters (Sam and dean's mugshots LMFAOOO) and prints that I just think are really pretty. It's something I don't tell a lot of people about but it's definitely a big thing about me.

When it comes to my tarot cards and crystals, I'd say I believe them when it comes to tarot readings but I'm not like analysing every breath with a rose quartz.

I love many films from chick flicks to Fight Club and I think they're both really good. I'm very critical at times when watching films which may be a bad trait since it throws me off of the rest of the film 😅

I'd say some of my favourites are Fight club, pride and prejudice (2005), the darjeeling limited, Clueless and the matrix.

But when it comes to series I like things like total drama, Supernatural obviously, THE BOYS I LITERALLY BREATHE THAT SHOW and gilmore girls! They're all just enjoyable

Other hobbies include drawing (I love drawing people and looking at design choices in characters), writing and gaming.

Favourite music artists are Lady Gaga, the Smiths, TV Girl, Michael Jackson, Usher and there's probably more but I do really enjoy R&B.

Physically, I'm quite short with thick, curly black hair and olive skin since I'm middle eastern. I have dark eyes and a couple of beauty marks on my face. I wear glasses (when I can be bothered) and if I could wear anything I wanted I would definitely be a completely Rory Gilmore, but instead I'd say most of the time I put on jeans and a graphic tee. Sometimes I do genuinely try to look good though, I really do like to pamper myself because I never really was girly when I was younger and I wish i was tbh 😭 but I'm just channeling it now.

Went to Target for some rainbow capitalism, and while I appreciate the sentiment, all of the designs are ugly as hell. They have some rainbow stripes and checks, but something about the colors just kinda reminds me of a circus tent. They had a handful of graphic tees that I was kinda interested in, but they were the ugliest colors imaginable. Like.

Tbh this is just kinda funny. Not really making much of a statement, although voluntarily wearing "QUEER" in big letters is its own statement. What's up with the colors, though? I would rather just get some iron-on letters and make my own.

I like this one more, but I'm not buying long sleeves at the end of May. Considering getting one and immediately taking some scissors to it. It'd make a decent crop top, and "queers take care of each other" is a good message for Pride. A bit of a threat, an aspiration, a command, a reminder of community. Still wish it had better colors (how hard is it to print a proper rainbow?).

Cute, I guess, but again with the long sleeves. Also, I get what they mean, but there are definitely some things I would like to be cured of.

Another one where I'd rather just make my own with iron-on letters. Or fabric paint, maybe. WHAT is with these color choices.

Picture of the pattern itself, since it's hard to see on images of the whole shirt. And yes, this is just a bunch of stylized people in the same weird colors with random pronouns floating around. Obligatory wheelchair so we can call it inclusive, though I guess that's better than... not doing that?

It's too hard to read in photos, but they did have one shirt that was a pale pink with white cursive font reading "live laugh lesbian" that made me laugh out loud and immediately text the first lesbian I could think of. They also has some branded tank tops (gay pride means uhhhh... Schitt's Creek and Queer Eye), and the website tells me there are a bunch of drag queen shirts my store didn't have.

Okay so it looks like it's just an excessively green jumpsuit. The little patch says "all day, everyday, and that's okay" which is hilarious enough. But I didn't look at the back!

Sleepy, darling, it's Blorbo Blursday, and I need to hear more about Sebastian and Lunetta. 8) How would you describe their aesthetics? Like, paint me a moodboard with words. 8) 8)

Sebastian is a lazy fashionista, so he wears clothing that fits him very well and that invidually stand out, but puts them together in a haphazard fashion.

he wears a lot of button down tees in every kind of print, but especially stripes, florals and fun ones with mushrooms or cats. he wears skinny and straight jeans in several flavors of brown, green, and grey, and always matches his shoes to his shirt. he favors casual shoes and oxfords, but is not adverse to a boot here and there. he never leaves home without a jacket, even if it's sweltering outside, because he needs to be able to layer and because his favorite articles of clothing are jackets, and he has so many of them, so he has to wear them to justify it. he has leather jackets, bombers, trench coats, sport jackets, cardigans, peacoats, asymmetrical hoodie things, you name it.

he has pierced ears and wears a lot of small golden hoops but also funny studs with alien heads or knives or whatever. his hair is chestnut, and grown to his shoulders during the winter, and he trims it for summertime, but it still falls to his chin. he'll wear it half up or in a small ponytail when he's hot.

Sebastian wears gold, wire-rimmed square-ish glasses, but also has a pair of green and gold plastic frames, and a white-marbled pair as well, both of which he wears less often and when he's in need of a change. he owns contacts but rarely wears them.

in the winter he wears scarves and beanies and fingerless gloves, and he always has a camera on him even when he's not working, because he's a fellow who likes to capture a good shot whenever.

that's Sebastian.

Lunetta wears bright and bold colors, and her hair is usually some bright shade. she changes it about twice a year. in the beginning of the story she's a shade of softer mauve but by the end she's sporting an electric blue.

she wears a lot of cute tops with high-waisted pants or leggings, and also overalls and rompers. she likes a fun pattern graphic tees with pop culture references or cute illustrations. she wears almost exclusively sneakers, usually a sporty brand in a multitude of colors. she favors blues, pinks, and greens the most. she's always wearing multiple accessors, be it bows in her hair, earrings, bracelets, rings, fun bags, belts, etc. she's very eye-catching and likes to smile at herself when she sees her reflection. she dresses to make herself happy and it works. her nails are always in shades of neon, and multicolored to go with any outfit.

she doesn't wear dark colors, really, and uses white to break up all the color she's sporting. she doesn't like to be too hot, so only wears a jacket if it's cold enough to warrant one. her coats are bright colors, too.

Lunetta likes experiementing with colored contact lenses, but mostly sticks to her glasses, either her round silver ones or the bright blue ones with the screw that comes loose. she accessorizes with her makeup too, preferring bold lip and eye colors to neutral or smoky looks. she's a bright personality and dresses like it.

she always has a drink with her, usually a cold one, and consumes so much caffeine it's a wonder that she gets any sleep. she has this in common with Sebastian.

Lunetta's world is bright and saturated, full of blues and pinks, and Sebastian's is also saturated, but in richer tones, greens and purples. Lunetta's world is accented in white, Sebastian's is accented in black. she's living in vibrancy, he's living in emphasis. she's sparkling, he's sophisticated. she's looking up at the sky, he's staring at the horizon.

Lunetta is all warm blues, Sebastian is all cool orange. and they meet on a train, and they're the same.

TEST 4: A DATE WITH MARKIPLI- I MEAN THE AMAZING ONE

It was a perfect day, because of course it was. Casey would have threatened the sky if it meant clearing the clouds. But luckily there was no need. They sit in a local coffee shop, dressed way too nicely for just hanging out. But they got too excited and wanted to impress Max. So much so that they showed up an hour early to make sure everything was perfect. And weirdly enough, most everyone has left except for the workers. Casey now sits, leg bouncing, waiting for Max to arrive.

Max slams open the door, rushing in, the bell ringing loudly above the door and startling Casey. He frantically looks around before spotting Casey and making an effort to slowly walk over like a normal member of society. Keyword: effort. “Hi, i'm so so so sorry i'm late, I was helping out a friend with a favor and I lost track of time and I really didn’t get any sleep last night and-” 

Considering Casey is the only customer currently in the shop, Max does not pull off the cool transition well. He tries to take a deep breath to stop breathing so damn fast. He’s a bit out of shape. “And I’m really sorry I wasted your time like that” Max is really only 20 minutes late, but to him it feels like 2 hours. “How um, how are you?” Although he was late, it didn't bother Casey as much as they thought that it should, and they gave him a wide smile. "No need to apologize!" They (not so subtly) show off the fancy dress they wore for the evening. "It's nice of you to help out a friend, and you weren't too late, I was only just getting bored." 

They responded with a giggle, "I'm great. Especially now that you're here."

Casey is full flung head over heels at the sight of Max.

“Awwww, that’s so sweet of you to say!” Max’s face flushes. “I have to say, you look absolutely magnificent. I especially love the stitching and embroidery at the hem. I’ve never seen you wear a dress like that before but it looks almost like it was made for you.”

The dress was made for them. They had their tailor make something just for today.

“Where did you buy i- uhh, I mean… uh… never mind, I’m sure you don’t want to discuss fashion with a guy like me” Max laughs nervously.

"Oh- uhm I bought it at…Claire's?" It was a lie. They got it from their personal tailor. "Thank you so much for the compliments! I know it's a little fancy for a cafe but I wanted to impress you."

Max very well knows that dresses aren’t sold at Claire’s. “Um, Claire’s, huh. Well you’re very lucky… Was it like a promotion or something?”

Casey has no clue what to say as they have little knowledge on what Claire’s actually sells. The safe answer would be ‘Yes, something like that,’ but then again, this is Casey Briar. Completely unpredictable and incredible at embarrassing themself. Hide your washing machines.

“I’ll stop asking about the dress, I'm being kinda weird” Max rubs the back of his neck.

"No! No, you're fine! I honestly like being able to talk to someone about dresses, no one I know really cares about fashion." Casey looks at their hands in their lap.

Max stammers. “I, ha, I mean, I don’t…um” 

"Are you not into fashion?" Casey frowned.

“Ah, um. I mean, “ Max hears a slight ringing in their ear. They should really open up to Casey, they only mean the best. “Yes, I’m into fashion,” he takes a deep breath. The ringing stops. “At least sort of, I mean, I don’t really care about…Well, any of the modern stuff I suppose. it’s all kinda… sweatshop-y? No one does their stitching right and it bothers me because like, I can see it right? Like it’s right in front of my eyeballs. I can see the effects of slave labour and just, it feels like no one ever cares to pay attention to it? I mean, everyone has like 40 print tees with dumb brands on them, and yet if you destroy one of their beloved graphic tees, half the time they wouldn’t even notice? I mean hell, half of it ends up in the landfill anyway. But the worst part is the clothes aren’t even good at being clothes, like. They fall apart in days, and they almost never darn nicely, and just. It sucks.” Max realizes. “Um… I’m rambling aren’t I, I’m sorry. I can shut up, I feel like I haven’t given you a chance to speak at all”

"No, I actually like listening to you. You know a lot." They tucked a stray strand of hair behind their ear. "And with such standards it makes me even more happy you complimented my dress earlier.."

Max smiles, relieved. “Aww, I mean, I feel like it’s the basics of ethical wear, but, sorry I keep putting my foot in my mouth. Yes, I really mean it about the dress, it’s magnificent. What do you think about fashion if I may ask?”

A blush made its way to Casey’s cheeks. "Uhm, I've never made clothes myself and most of mine are made by my tailor, but I really enjoy cute clothes. The ones that show off my waist, and fit well with my jewelry. I sometimes watch my tailor when he sews and I've tried it out once! I pricked my finger and he said I wouldn't be allowed to touch the needles again but it was so fun to see the dresses he made come together." They ended up rambling. "Ah, sorry, now I'm the one talking your ear off."

“Don’t worry about it, I think it’s super cool you hired a tailor. I did the same back when I was learning. It’s pretty easy once you know all the stitches, but you know, that takes a while.” Max relaxes a bit in his chair. “Hey, If ever you want help with an outfit and your tailor’s busy, feel free to give me a shout. I’m a bit of an amateur, but I know enough of the basics I’m sure I could lend a hand!” 

While the two chat, the workers behind the counter whisper among themselves before one finally walks around to the table. He nervously smiles and asks “Would you two like to order anything?”

"Yes please!" Casey started their very long and specific order that they order every time they come to this cafe. The workers already know their order but they still say it out loud every single time to their annoyance, 'just in case' they forget, even though they absolutely could just say 'my usual' and they'd get the same order. "Did you get all that? I can repeat it if needed." The waiter shakes his head and finishes drawing a squid in his notepad, because he knows if he doesn’t ‘write it down’ then Casey will repeat it, but he doesn’t mind. Helps him practice drawing. “Yup! Got it all down. Your usual!”

 Casey looks over. "What would you like, Max?"

“I’m really sorry, I uh, don’t know what the drinks on this menu are… Um, do you guys have frozen drinks? Like a frappe?”

“Well, yes we do, but we don’t call them frappe’s. Well no, we’re not supposed to call them frappe’s. They’re called…” the waiter sighs “Réveil Glacé…”

“Can I have a large er ‘Ruhvale Glass eh’?”

“We don’t have large’s we have Cup, Mug, and Vase. A large is a vase.”The waiter looks more and more miserable as he explains the shop's poor wording.

“A um, a ‘vaws’ of that previous drink then?” Max says, very sure he butchered the pronunciation.

“It’s- it’s just Vase. Like- something you put flowers in. It’s not French.”

“Oh um,” Max blushes. “Right. That then.”

The waiter nods and heads back behind the counter to make the drinks.

Casey tries to contain their laughter, failing, as they try to soothe Max. "It's okay hun, your pronunciation was amazing. I'm so proud of you." Max clearly looks EXHAUSTED from that exchange. 

“Fr- f- French is really hard Casey. It- it’s my worst subject…” He frowns.

"That's okay, it doesn't make you any less amazing." Casey is fluent in French, their mother made them learn it because it was a ‘dignified language’. They’re being kind to Max right now.

“We’ve only been studying it 4 years, it’s no fair they want me to understand whole entire sentences.” It’s completely fair for the school to expect them to understand full sentences, in fact it’s a miracle Max made it to French 4.

Casey almost laughed at that, but they held themself together. "It's okay, do you want me to tutor you? I'm. Pretty decent at French."

Max smiles. “That would be nice. I don’t know if it’s ahead of your learning, but if you can help me with passay ant-earier, I might be able to start on my assignment.”

"... I'm sure I can help you, don't worry." Casey had absolutely no clue what he was attempting to say in French. The narrator doesn’t know either. It also seems Max doesn’t.

The waiter walks back again two drinks in hand. One that looks to be a mountain of treats on top of coffee and the other, a usual frappe. He sets them down and asks “Would you two like anything else?”

"Yes, can we have a few cookies?" Casey asks, clasping their hands together.

“Sure! We have chocolate chip, sugar, raisin, double chocolate, vanilla, macaroons, macadamia nut, almond, and honey crisp.”

"Are you allergic to nuts, Max?"

“Just peanuts, the rest are fine, if you know there is no peanut oil or anything”

"Uh." Casey turns to the waiter, "Can we have all of them except for the ones with peanut oil?"

The waiter nods. “Sounds good! One of each or two?”

"Two, please!"

He smiles and says “coming up!” And quickly heads to the cookie display. The waiter comes back with a large plate of cookies and says “Enjoy!” Before heading back to the counter

“Hey Um. Thanks for all this.” Max fidgets with his hands. “I wouldn’t have ever thought to do something nice like this on my own and it’s really nice to be able to take a break from all the messiness in my life. Well, most of the messiness anyway.” He smiles. “You’re a really good person, Casey. I mean I’m sure you get that all the time but, I still think it needs to be said.” Despite being told that every day, for once it’s obvious that Max truly means it.

"Actually, I don't hear it that much.." Casey’s face goes red. "You're the first to, like, actually say I'm a nice person and not say it just cuz there's something to gain from being friends with me." This time, they looked from their hands and smiled at Max. "Thank you so much. If you ever need a break, you have my number, I'll always make time for you. Even if it's the end of the world."

Max blushes. “That’s really sweet. Though, the end of the world may come sooner than we think. Whole lot of capes these days and their powers can be anything. I heard one guy can freeze everything for half a mile around… All I’m saying is- you mean a lot to me, so take care of yourself, okay?”

The way he talked about capes caused them to pause, not sure how to respond. They just said, "Thank you. You too, Max. You mean a lot to me too."

The sky starts to turn red as the sun goes down. “We will close soon, just so you know.” the waiter calls out.

"Oh! Time flew by, huh? Well, I'm sure you have other things to do so we can call it a day?"

“Oh, yeah! Maybe text me sometime, again and um, I’ll, uh. Um.”

Casey giggles, "I'll text you." Then, they leaned over and pressed a small kiss on Max’s cheek. "See you, Maxie. This was fun!"

The narrator screams. Max is completely speechless.

Casey’s phone rings and after checking it, it appears to be their mother. Their wonderful time just got crushed, their mom was wanting to know where they were and why they weren't home. As they read the texts their face fell, it appeared she had been texting for hours at this point and they hadn't checked. There was no way they were getting off easy when they got home. They whispered under their breath. “Fuck.” The phone falls silent as the call finally stops. Right after it starts to ring again. Casey knows she won’t call a third time.

They quickly rushed out the door, waving goodbye to Max. As the door swings shut, Casey looks back to meet Max’s eye. Their eyes are full of tears, and their face is pale. Then the door shuts and the waiter looks to Max. “Don’t worry about paying, they prepaid and what not. I hope you had a lovely day!” 

Casey takes the call. "Yes, mother?"

“Where are you?” The voice is cold.

"I'm on my way home, I'm sorry, I didn't see the texts until now."

“I don’t want to have to wait for you. Either fly home or tell the driver where you are, we have dinner in 30 minutes and you will not be late. We are having very important guests over.”

"I'm sorry, I'll be home." They kept their voice from breaking mid sentence.

Casey’s mother hangs up, and the driver soon texts “Where may I pick you up?”

Casey sends the address to their driver and waits, their dress was now wet from their tears and it made them even more frustrated. Even though they wanted this date to end well, nothing does for them, they wonder why they got their hopes up from the beginning. The driver soon arrives, and when seeing the sight of Casey as they climb into the car she looks a little sad. She says quietly

 “There are tissues in the door, dear. And….your mother requested you change into the outfit she chose. It should be on the seat next to you.”

"Thank you." They whispered to the driver and wiped the tear stains from their face. They were glad they wore water-proof makeup or else their dress would be even more ruined. The dress their mother chose wasn't ugly, it was a fancy dress that they knew she made to suit her child, but they hated it because it didn't feel like theirs. It made them frustrated. They put it on anyway, knowing that they'd get in trouble if they didn't.

They arrive at the entrance of the Briar residence, Casey’s mother waiting impatiently. “You look lovely, dear.”

Fasting all went 2 Bushwick together

Julian Foy is the type of guy you want to be your friend’s boyfriend. He has fiery red hair and wears silly cropped graphic tees, comes across as possibly gay when you meet him (he’s not!) & knows everybody and a little bit about everything. He’s the lead vocalist for a band called Fasting that sometimes plays at TransPecos.

Fasting is the type of band you’d want to play your zine release party. Composed of 5 members– Sean Lawson, Sean Terrrell, Gordon Gillespie, Julian Foy and Jessie Capozzi– They can sway a crowd, literally and figuratively. The dreary April night I saw them, they were one of a few acts inaugurating Rambler Magazine’s latest print issue. They were following a slow, jazzy type band at Village Works, a tiny indie bookstore on St. Marks. Who knew it was a music venue? The place was overflowing with books on tables and books on shelves. It was raining, forcing the indoor/outdoor party strictly inside. The owner of the venue was behind the register asking the musicians to “Keep it down!’ The band was practically on top of eachother, performing from a walk-in closet sized corner of the venue. The crowd was on top of eachother, too–”DON'T lean on the books, please.” Foy bounced around during the set wearing his graduation cap (Pratt Institute, Film,) warding off any low spirits. The guy next to me mutters to those surrounding him, “They’re really good!” twice, banging his shaved head back and forth. 

In the words of Capozzi, bass, keys, sometimes the sax, (Pratt, Drawing,) Fasting makes “very human music.” Some songs are shoegazey, or noise pop-y, some are more post punk. “You know me so well” has warbling, subdued and sweet, almost ghostly vocals. “Lay me down taking my shoes off / I forgot my socks/ grave was faded and hard to read/ written on a subway wall. ” But it’s less about the song’s lyrics and less about the buzz of the melancholic guitar and thrashing drums, those could be gone by the next song. It’s more about the universals, the mood, the feeling, the scenes they emulate.  

John Public, the band’s 2023 debut album, is a memento, a mixed bag, made up of songs as old as 2018, the birth of the band, all the way to 2022. Those first songs came to life in the Pratt Institute dorms, as well as friendship and mold. The album’s namesake, John Public, references an inside joke amongst Pratt students. “John Public” is the John Doe for Pratt’s  lost student ID poster. The album is about that time, going to art school in Brooklyn, part- time jobs and smoking cigarettes, sometimes hand rolled. Trying to scrounge up $7 for a Prontos Deli sandwich. Those days feel like dreams. 

The newest member, the second Sean, Sean Lawson (The New School, Jazz) joined the band after a quick DM exchange with Sean Terrell, drummer, (Pratt Institute, Painting.) I am told by multiple sources that Sean Lawson is a musical genius. Terrell messaged Lawson on Instagram, wondering if he knew anyone who could play lead guitar. Both Seans had met through “the scene.” Lawson could play lead guitar, a member of another band, Aggressive Squirrels, already. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who…

We have to rush to Bushwick, to the Fasting Apartment, because some of the band is driving to Jersey right after the interview for a house show, or house party, or something like that. Sage, my roommate and Foy’s girlfriend, has told me stories of foot fungus and rats plaguing the infamous crib. There’s a Popeye’s and Mcdonald’s nearby, attracting chaos and all sorts of creatures. This is the band’s headquarters, and 4/5 of the band’s general living quarters: Gordon Gillespie, rhythm guitar, (Pratt Institute, Photo) and then Foy, Terrell and Capozzi. Sean Lawson doesn’t live here, this is the first time he’s been here, actually. There's a CPR dummy perched above the kitchen counter and a Hello Kitty poster on the wall, gifts given from the mystical streets of the city. Adobo seasoning, an astray, headphones, pliers, half a pair of sneakers and a roll of duct tape litter the coffee table. Capozzi’s room has a pair of pants pinned to the wall. You can barely see the floor of Gillespie’s, who has a loft bed.

Most of us met at Pratt. Sean and Gordon were random roommates when they were freshmen like four years ago.

Did you live in the apartment before? Or did you make the band before? 

JULIAN

Band before, 5 years ago now. Freshman year..

GORDON

Julian was down the hallway from me and Sean.

JESSE

There's also another member we need to speak about. 

GORDON

A secret member who is going to become a monk soon.

SEAN TERRELL 

He was our fucking grateful dead. What's the guy? He was our Jerry Garcia.

JULIAN 

So, in the Can-- paper thin walls and shared bathrooms for the entire floor. Right? 

CULT

Yeah.

JULIAN 

Naked people everywhere. People would have to go back to the room with a towel where other people were drinking Red Bull and vodka shots.

GORDON

Every Tuesday night everyone in the entire building would get hammered.

SEAN TERRELL

Because everyone had the morning class off, we all had 1pm classes.

JULIAN 

The walls were super thin. So, you could hear what was happening in every room as you passed by. In your room, you could hear conversations everywhere, even underneath, because the floor was just so thin. You could jump on it and it would bounce. You could bend the walls. They were made with thin plywood, to be temporary housing for the people who built the other dorm. We met because you could hear through the walls what people were doing. When they were making music, we could hear it. We'd just knock on just knock on the door and be like, what is that? What is that song?

GORDON

"My name is Julian and I'm a really good rapper. Let me freestyle for ya."

CULT

You rap? 

JULIAN 

Yeah, I was in a rap group called "Sort of Sober." We were all so bad.  We opened for Lil TiJay. That was our moment. For Lil TiJay at a club. That was pretty cool. 

JESSE

They all started playing music together. And then Eddie, who hasn't lived in New York for a while, joined. And then I floated in. Really early though, we wrote "talking to ed" like the first week I joined. 

JULIAN 

Jesse would float in to play the saxophone.

JESSE

People who could hear it through their wall would tell me to shut the fuck up.

I started talking to Sean, because I was in another band of people I knew from Long Island and I asked him to be the drummer. And he did that for a while. And I had class with Gordon, so we all kind of knew each other musically, and not musically. There was no real rehearsing at that time, a lot of making recordings in the dorm.

GORDON

It wasn't a group of people either. We had people floating in. Our friend Thomas wrote a song that we used to play in our set.

JULIAN 

We would have homies sit around giving us conceptual ideas.

Was there a certain sound that you were aiming for back then?

JESSE

Any idea that came to our heads. A lot of indie? 

SEAN TERRELL

I was super into fucking Current Joys and Black Marble, and shit like that. Gordon put me onto shit that I used to hate, which was straight up emo music and Algernon 1000s math rock. Ones where the vocals are super annoying, and like whining. Now I love that shit. 

JESSE

When we were sophomores we started rehearsing more seriously with Julien singing, Sean drumming and singing a lot, Gordon playing guitar, and our friend Eddie playing lead. I was playing bass. We played one show, early February of 2020. We played battle of the bands. 

JULIAN 

Eddie faced away from the audience the entire time, because he was wearing a Michael Jackson shirt.

SEAN TERRELL

We lost because JHARIAH all voted for themselves. We joked that we were gonna vote for ourselves and JHARIAH did. There were probably about seven votes total, and five of them were everyone in that band. 

JESSE

Yeah, then Sean didn't come back to the city for the next year. Neither did Gordon. I started living with Julian and someone else. 

SEAN TERRELL

That was a dark period. That was sort of the Dark Ages.

JESSE

Sean (Terrell) came into the city to visit his girlfriend. That fall, we jammed once. It was really fun, we wrote a song. The next fall, I guess the fall of 2021, Sean moved back to the city to continue going to school. Then the four of us started living together. Eddie never came back after COVID. He moved to Colorado. We've still kept in touch. He was the greatest musician of the group, by far.

SEAN TERRELL

But he gave up making music and he deleted it off the internet and became a monk. He was super Russian Orthodox. In high school, he made music with this band called The Hellp, producing.

CULT

Wait, I’ve heard of them.

JESSE

There are some really funny pictures of him on the internet. I saw Reddit posts from a month ago, where someone was theorizing that he was still involved.

JULIAN 

He's got memorable licks. Tasteful, memorable melodies. You can hear it on "I will go outside." 

JESSE

So that's basically the history. Then Sean joined. Our friend Jamison, she played with us for a little bit, but it was a more casual thing. We played as a four piece for a little bit. Sometimes with Julian trying to play lead guitar, but not practiced. Sean Terrell DMed Sean Lawson asking if he knew any New School jazz guitarists who would want to be in the band. Which is crazy because he saw us play the worst, most tension fueled show of all.

SEAN LAWSON

There was a point in the set where Jesse said that it was their last show. It felt like everyone in the audience was like, "Was that a joke?"

JESSE

I liked that it was hard to tell. 

GORDON

You used to say that a lot. We used to be in the middle of practice. You'd be like, "Alright, we're done." 

JESSE

Because I thought that. I honestly hated it for a while. Not the band specifically, just playing. I don't know why I thought it was really stupid for a while. I think I was just really mad all the time at a lot of things in life. There was still enjoyment with playing music, but I got to a point like when I was finishing Pratt, like in 2022, where I actively didn't listen to music. Unless it was like jazz on the radio, for almost an entire year. 

SEAN TERRELL 

Through a tiny cassette player.

JULIAN 

That or baseball. 

JESSE

But even that whole time, I was still writing music.

CULT

Are you a perfectionist? 

SEAN TERRELL

He's like a contrarian.

JESSE

That's not true at all. 

CULT

Where does the name “Fasting” come from?

JESSE

They spent a whole week trying to think of a name. 

GORDON 

A whole year.

JESSE

Some silly names we were going to be, "Christmas." 

GORDON 

"Christmas band" does not work. "Dog with a cane" -- that was the first name. We had a SoundCloud with that name. We never posted anything.

JULIAN 

These nincompoops went on the balcony to smoke cigarettes. They come back like "Yo, we've thought of it. Balconies." 

JESSE

The name Fasting came from when we were still in school and Gordon didn't get paid for their Pratt job for a while. So they had no money. When Gordon was really hungry, they would say, "now I'm fasting."

GORDON

I was in the photo building. I was working the desk, but the way their system is, you don't get paid for the first month. One meal a day, your sandwich or something. Now we're all fat. 

CULT

I have three questions that go together. Do you live together, except for Sean, because you're a band or because you're friends? What makes you so close? And how much time do you spend together?

SEAN TERRELL

We live together because we're buddies. But the band did exist first.

JULIAN  

If we were having friend problems, we'd play music about it sometimes.

GORDON

Our early practices were so bad. If Julian was mad at Sean he would try and scream over him every time he was singing. I couldn't play the bass. They were just so bad. We wouldn't live together if we didn't also, like, enjoy spending time with each other a lot.

JESSE

We've known each other for so long. I think the closeness started early on. We've done a lot of shit together over the years. We've seen a lot of shit. We've seen each other grow up because it's been like fucking five years at this point, which is insane. Now we're all adults in the world having jobs, which is weird.

CULT

What genre are you? 

JULIAN 

We used to say "fast and fun." 

JESSE

Music for everyone under the sun.  I do think it's very human.

GORDON

(Mocking Jesse) "it's very human music." 

JESSE

Post punk, new wave, not so much anymore. Definitely math rock for people that can't count.

JULIAN 

Math rock for people missing fingers.

JESSE

We have a lot of overlapping musical interests but also everyone is into their own thing which is something I've always enjoyed. 

JULIAN 

Jamison was full on funk sometimes. And we had a saxophone.

SEAN

We usually like to have friends on the album. 

CULT

What's your music about?

JESSE

it's not about music, but it also is. (Laughter from the band.) Now I've gotten super into songwriting. There's so much to explore forever. I really enjoy experimenting with harmonies or with songwriting and dipping back into old ideas. So for me, it's about writing songs and trying to play them live. And having fun. Which we're trying to do for the first time.

SEAN 

I used to give a fuck about lyrics. And now I super don't. I only use lyrics as a vehicle to sing notes. They're more free associative. I would "free associate" words until I would come up with idioms or phrases that didn't mean something that I hated. Or could be construed in a way that was really dumb. Julian loves writing.

JULIAN 

I love writing lyrics and all my lyrics are about something. I always imagine that I'm trying to say something, and as I'm saying it, it's coming out through rhythm. Then the melody comes from music. For me, the first three or four years of making music, it was all rap. Malik, and Phil, from that band (Sort Of Sober), influenced me a lot. I used to write spoken word in high school, that's also rhythm based. But it wouldn't fit tightly into phrases. The two of them were like, your flows are terrible. Now I'm like, where can those things meet? Also a lot of improvisation. There's a lot of times during shows where I've sung lyrics that I never wrote for the band, or they came out live, and sometimes I'm not even saying words. That's fine. I might be saying words. I might be saying sounds. 

GORDON

It's a lot of poetic imagery. There's not a lot of concrete stories or ideas. 

JESSE

We haven't had a concept album yet. Unless the concept is drinking beer.

Your Week of Outfits - December 18, 2023

I’m back again with weekly outfit inspiration! These outfits are all so much fun and are meant to inspire you to take items from your closet to recreate similar looks! Of course, if you would like to shop that would be amazing…I’ve tried to include a variety of price points for every most budgets!

In the outfit above, what jumps out at me is the combination of camel, black and chocolate brown. So, I do have a pair of very old chocolate brown boots that I’ve been thinking I should pull out so that’s where I would start with this look. I definitely would put on a white tee under the blazer and probably wear a black blazer instead of a camel one. Just play around and see what you come up with…you might be surprised!

There are days when I want to wear color and days when black and brown seem to be in order so go with your mood as well!

The snakeskin booties are definitely the star of this show, but I don’t own a pair. I do have a snakeskin blouse that would be fun with black jeans. The blouse is years old, but still really beautiful so I’m inspired to pull it out and play around with different combinations.

Ballet flats are not my jam…they are not flattering on me. They are a huge trend right now, but I will not be participating. I do however, love the idea of wearing a graphic tee or sweatshirt underneath a blazer and love the print of this blazer. It’s an interesting street style look that’s unexpected. Perfect for a day when you want to be casual. The necklace is a fun addition that dresses up the look!

Light bloue and chocolate brown are such fabulous colors together! This simple look can be recreated in so many color combinations and always works. A cropped sweater is perfect with high waisted pants or jeans. Play around with colors like pink and red, black and brown, green and purple. Be bold if you feel like it!

I am a fan of lug sole boots and booties. They are comfortable and perfect with jeans and leggings and the trend doesn’t seem to be loosing any steam! Leggings and a longer sweater is a combination that most everyone owns and can be very chic…especially with a great pair of lug sole boots!

Consider off white pants with a pink sweater and silver accessories or an off white sweater with the fabulous sequin skirt if this cute look from J. Crew look is too much! I’m thinking of investing in a pair of silver slingbacks because they are so versatile!

Who doesn’t love cozy Sundays? The long black coat really elevates the whole look and the Dolce Vita sneakers come in lots of colors and are so cute. Perfect for a long stroll on a cold day!
