Got the alphasmart I’m gonna mod with a mechanical keyboard in

It needs cleaning, and if I can’t get the permanent marker off I’m gonna probably spray paint it too, but it’s in overall good shape

Typing on it feels absolutely horrible though and really makes me appreciate the Neo2 I already have

Also I wonder if I can potentially give it a bit of a better screen too…

do you have any advice for those just starting out using renpy/ making games?

im still learning my way around renpy and making visual novels and what works best ..here are some personal findings:

..try to replace renpys default ui and mess with the options.rpy and screens.rpy right away , the more time put into it the easier it will become to make something unique to your senses. you can change basically everything. you dont have to make a widescreen vn either..4:3, square or portrait mode are possible as well

..look into layered images, the feature is really awesome if you want sprites that change outfits or want to be able to do unique expression combinations without having to save a png of every one

..its good to define characters, atl(animations), images, transitions etc each in their own .rpy file. you can make as many .rpy files as you need and you dont have to only use "script.rpy" to write your story. i divide my script into act files to make it easier..

n some not renpy stuff:

..this software helps you take breaks and avoid RSI and it is pretty invaluable for me. it will track based on the time you spend moving your mouse or keyboard. this also helps keep on task n if you get distracted you're more aware of it.

..if you are a writer, i cant recommend getting an alphasmart neo2 enough. especially if you cant handwrite. its an old device that lets you type textfiles without a bluelight screen. you can 'send' what you write directly to your computer through a printer cable and it types it out. it fits plenty and its useful for writing script outside the computer. refurbished ones on ebay are good.

..its easy to get really overambitious and perfectionist and then not make anything as a result..my advice if this comes up is to prioritize the existence of the thing rather than its ability to match the impossible image in your head. that ideal picture will always be shifting into more impossible territory as you improve anyway, so think about what you're actually capable of and make it actually happen!! important to remember ur not triple A studio.. being independent is an advantage cuz you can do anything!

thts all i can get from the top of my head tht i havent said here before(ithink?)..i think about the last one a lot honestly i think thats my best advice i have if you can call it that

BYOK Launch

I normally don't link to stuff that isn't already on this platform, but I figure in the case of advertisement, that is appreciated!

The BYOK is a distraction-free writing device that just launched its kickstarter! I own several distraction-free writing devices, including a second hand Astrohaus Freewrite, an Astrohaus Traveler from their launch event, an AlphaSmart 3000 that I since gifted to another writer, and an AlphaSmart Neo2. I can tell you from experience that distraction free writing devices genuinely work; I write about 50% more words per session on them per unit time, compared to a normal device with internet access and your references/resources on it.

However, the Astrohaus offerings are prohibitively expensive, they abandoned the first two generations of their smart typewriter (no more updates), and they have quality control issues with the Traveler that they have yet to address. I don't trust the company, which is sad because I have genuinely enjoyed their devices (other than the exploding battery in the Traveler, obviously).

The BYOK looks comparatively inexpensive and promising! Obviously I can't say how it preforms now, but at the price point, it's worth a look! I also love the flexibility of using your own keyboard, having several lighting options, being able to set up the height of the screen however you want, etc.

Competition is often healthy for the end user, and the massive response to the kickstarter testifies to that! Please take a look if you are a writer! I am genuinely excited and already pledged!

having gigi (alphasmart neo2) makes us wonder why we ever wanted a freewrite traveler so bad. ooooh yeah we want to pay 600 dollars for a thin ass "smart typewriter" that needs to connect to the internet to transfer your files and which has a delay in its screen update. it epitomizes the fetishization of being writer. versus gigi which we got for 50 dollars who we can beat people to death with and which operates perfectly and the only thing you need for file transfer is a cord. it takes years for it to run out of battery for most people and its obnoxious so you can't look elegant while using it. it was discontinued in 2013 but it doesn't even need support because it's so easy to repair on your own and doesn't pull the wacky hijinks a smart device would. it's not even meant for writing novels it was originally designed for children and it's so good. real book writing enjoyers make use of the neo2 because it actually works very well as a distraction-free writing device without feeling bougie and beautiful so you also have to sacrifice your dignity to use it in public as we have many times. not only does it look stupid but it's loud as fuck. and we have had no problems with it nor have we ever regretted spending the 50 dollars. we love gigi

my alphasmart neo2 which I love dearly and is my #1 writing tool got some sand in it (friends dog excited at the beach incident) and now it won't turn on :( and I'm trying to get the screws undone but the big ones won't budge even with wd-40 a rubber band AND my micro bit screwdriver set :( or new batteries :( I might try buying a charging cable since I've been going purely off battery power but like dude if I have to plug it in all the time what's the POINT!!!!

YOOOO, do you have one? have I found my people? they have such a cult following the the subreddit is fairly active last i checked, but I feel like I never run into alphasmart users on tumblr. and on one hand, GOOD, the ebay prices have gone up so much the past ten years, but also, alas, what a lonely time.

mostly use a neo2 now, but I think the 3000 is the prettiest girl at the party and i always go back to her.

experimented with switching from coffee to matcha yesterday. drank two matchas and experienced the most galaxy brained potentially unhinged potentially just massively inside baseball occult brainstorming session re: structure of the book in terms of style, substance, metafiction, and hypersigil.

today I get to drink one (1) matcha and see if the notes make any sense.

My father-in-law got me the Neo2 word processor as a Christmas present last year, and I've really enjoyed using it. I was finding the internet an irresistible distraction when trying to write on my tablet or phone, and as silly as it seems to go back to a word processor in this the year 2020, it really has helped me to focus on writing when I want to be writing.

Super random but I saw you’re having issues with your laptop and may I suggest the neo2 by alphasmart its like a portable typewriter and the battery last super long and the memory is amazing so you never have to worry aboit loosing your stuff! And you can transfer all your work to your laptop and keep it on it too! Its no laptop but its a great writing tool. I got it off Amazon for 45 :)
