Yeah, choose whatever is closest (or pick one that you also have skills in alongside your more niche creative interest). The pairs are artist+writer mostly so that we can give each pair access to a wider range of skills!

he definitely liked sharks.

I don't imagine he was the type to have any major interest in sea life or know enough facts to pass for being a genius. but he'd find certain deep see creatures cool and if you ever asked what his favourites were he'd give an obnoxious little grin and say the kraken or a megalodon.

Thoughts of merfolk yandere?

I was recently rereading the Lost Voices Trilogy - and without getting to much into the plot, a concept I really found interesting in those books was the mermaids, all of whom were initially born as human and transformed into mermaids after suffering neglect and abuse through an ancient God’s blessing (though I think that’s not mentioned until the second or third book), and being able to find other prospective mermaids.

In the books, each mermaid (or potential mermaid) has this sort of haze around her that adds to her enchanting beauty - and if another mermaid looks into the haze, they can see the abuse and neglect that person has suffered which turns/can turn them into a mermaid (though it’s a form of social etiquette depending on mermaid ‘clans’ not to look).

It’s also implied that their transformation into mermaid often pressured the mermaid into thinking all humans deserved to die (the protagonist describes it as her heart freezing when turning), though some do struggle to fight against that - and it builds off the previous pain/resentment they may have felt.

Hence, why they sink ships. It’s also in a very old code of honor that any mermaid who is heard or seen by a human must lure them into the water to be drowned - and if they happen to see another mermaid on the ship, still human, some see it as rescuing that mermaid.

They become semi-immortal (no aging, but can be killed), gain supernatural beauty, and enchanting singing voices (notably still unique to each person, and the meaning/feelings evoked by their song depends on the Mer).

So I keep thinking of a yandere mermaid (or man) seeing their darling on a passing boat while the rest of their clan circles in, and begins singing to them.

I used to write for it frequently before the hyper fixation o nit died out, I think there's even tags for some of my old yandere merfolk work. I love mermaids, from fantasy to hyper realistic to sci-fi horror.

i really like the fics where they try to get you as a mate by showing you the large catches they can fetch, the shiniest rocks they can gather, and showing you their fins and marks as a mating display. All while we think it's innocent and friendly, unaware we just agreed to be mates for life.

Its an odd niche but its tasty nonetheless

A little bit about me: I'm autistic and ADHD which means that I tend to be fairly chaotic around people I feel comfortable with- that includes swearing like a sailor, rambling about my special interests or stuff that I feel strongly about. I tend to also tell 50 stories in the same conversation because I get sidetracked. I'm also Polish so I sometimes speak in my mother tongue without realising it.

I'm also a writer and I tend to have multiple projects at the same time- it could be books, games, videos. Anything like that. And I tend to get hyperfixated on stuff a lot 😅

I'm also into alternative fashion and I tend to do very exaggerated makeup that takes me forever to get off.

💜 Truly unfortunate (or fortunate) that Mystery is always going to be quick to egg you on into rambling about whatever niche interest or project no matter how “appropriate” it is for public space too. I fear this dog of a man is just sick with puppy love for you every step of the way in the relationship. He wants to hear you yap and will stare quietly most of the conversation with the tiniest “uh huh” or “go on” to cue that he wants more.

Though it’s not like Zoey is much better.

💙 Zoey’s role in the relationship is a lot more of an interesting support and/or hype for you on a lot of your projects. It doesn’t matter how often you pick up or put down personal projects- she adores the passion you have for your work and as a writer herself she’s quick to ask all the best questions to keep you rambling about an interest. Truly- shes your #1 fangirl & she’s going to act like it with wild theories & excited pestering on your work.

💙 overall though Zoey is probably the one much better at actually engaging with your interests without you asking. She’s happy to join in your interests, try your fashion- and is just as quick to pull you straight into hers. (You definitely see so many of Huntrix’s songs long before they ever get recorded) and it’s her own personal way of saying she loves you without explicitly saying “I love you”

However of the 2- Zoey definitely tells you she loves you more- and she… definitely gets “creative” with it! Last time she poetically compared you to a cup of ramen 🫶 & last time Mystery let you know he loved you he sort of just… flopped into your lap like a dog.

💙💜 together the both share an interest in your mother tongue as you put it- and both will probably be pretty quick to pick up on it. Mystery is much more likely to parrot or repeat random polish words he just enjoys- but Zoey will want to learn and try to implement more of the language into her more domestic use. (Mystery is able to but- he’s not exactly fond of speaking in general so that’s your war to fight 🙏)

💙💜🩶 Ultimately as a trio yall are yappy, high energy, and only keep raising the bar when yall are around each other. Yall are probably a bit much for some others- but Zoey & Mystery wont ever seem to get enough of your charm.

Yuna looked at the photo over. The composition and lighting captured certainly gave it an amateur feel but... she didnt particularly care about that.

She smiled, and flipped to a page closer to the start of the binder that had some empty slots in it. She would add a note to it later, but for now, she slid it into a slot with practiced ease, alongside a few of her other favorites that had been separate from anything else that was similar.

"You've got my promise." Yuna said, nodding her head firmly. "I'll treasure it. So thank you."

She closed the binder carefully and placed it back in her bag, before her eyes caught the picture she bad been examining earlier.

i have a few recommendations for you!

i've been dying to recommend some youtube channels that i really love but never have the chance to bring up, but i think they have interesting things to say about japanese media!

Hazel makes video essays about anime and other media, i'm currently very entertained by her videos about obscure OVAs and old playstation 2 games. i really enjoy how she talks about things and hearing her perspective on various subjects

Amelie Doree (though i'm not sure if she goes by that or Noelle which is what she uses on her patreon) makes videos essays on (mainly eroge) japanese visual novels, from very famous and genre-defining ones, to extremely niche and often completely untranslated and undiscussed in the west ones! her videos are incredibly interesting and have given me a whole new appreciation for the visual novel genre of which i wasn't familiar with before

a good video of hers to start is "Why a Forgotten Visual Novel is the Best Trans Story I've Read' it talks about sexual topics but i think its clean enough to leave its good first impression regardless of how you feel about the medium

RickiHirsch (i believe she goes by Ricki) makes videos about a variety of subjects but often including also japanese games, anime and manga. one of my favorite and first video of hers i saw was "Queer Horror: Understanding Gender as Body Horror"

and lastly, i want to prove my point by recommending a modern anime i myself have watched completely on my own that i really enjoyed and think others would like!

this anime is from 2024 and i stumbled on it completely by accident. i was scared off a bit by the title (otokonoko being the common japanese term to describe a crossdressing man) but i was kinda pleasantly surprised by the softness and sincerity in which this show aproaches its topics.

its a romance/slice of life/drama show and its melodramatic and sugary sweet but a genuinely wholesome experience. the main character is extremely transfem coded (if you can even call it that? its in the text) and the show doesn't mock or demonize her for it and fully focuses on her perspective and feelings the whole time (and doesnt in any way deny a trans reading), and also its the first romance story probably ever where i've seen a character realize they're actually aromantic as a conclusion to their arc. its cute its sweet and if you watch the first episode and think thats for you then all 12 episodes will go by flying and you will cry. because i did

Was thinking about how much of a normo I come across as irl, how I’ve felt a lil odd person out at their shows bc of being a bit older (29) and looking so aggressively normal, how generally confused people in my life would be if they knew about my d&p obsession, how thoroughly i mask weirder traits and essentially codeswitch to suit the mainstream, etc.

i feel kind of fish out of water when I imagine how all the people that populate my tumblr phandom ecosystem are likely presenting to the world irl (I.e. more visibly queer, counterculture, and so on). But then I think maybe the most visible phannies are the ones with the most curated, alt, deliberate daytoday lewks/style? So maybe what I’m picturing is off base?
