Just watched the Mitchell's vs the machines and love that animation studios are realising we want stylised 3d animation, not realistic!!!

One thing I like to think about is how Twisted Wonderland could incorporate elements from Disney’s 2d movies into their lore.
For example:
During a potions class, when Professor Crewel leaves the room, Ace starts mucking about and accidently adds a plant that’s basically used in Twisted Wonderland’s alcohol. This causes pink bubbles to form from the cauldron and transform into the pink elephants on parade that begin to create chaos and now the entire class have to figure out how to get rid of them.
Ace, Deuce and Yuu are with their fellow classmates on a camping trip and they’re all telling ghost stories around a campfire and two or three of their classmates bring up heffalumps and woozles much to Yuu and Grim’s confusion. Ace scoffs, saying that they’re not real and just a scary story people tell to scare kids (kind of like the boogeyman of Twisted Wonderland). When Fem!Yuu asks what those are her classmates answer her (maybe they start singing/chanting a slower version of the original song) by explaining that they ‘guzzle up the thing you prize’, making them up to be these monsters the same way Pooh, Tigger and Rabbit were teaching Roo in Pooh’s Heffalump Movie. Ace looks unimpressed but Deuce, Fem!Yuu and Grim (especially since the last two don’t know anything about this world) look scared. At some point in the night, food starts to go missing and then the class end up split up in the woods and everyone sees shadows of these heffalumps and woozles the same way Snow White saw monsters after she ran from the huntsman. When they can’t find Yuu Ace, Deuce and Grim believe that she’s been eaten by those creatures and they create a plan of attack to get revenge on those monsters for eating Grim’s tuna *Ace and Deuce turn to look at Grim* he means eating his henchman. Long story short, heffalumps and woozles don’t exist, their food was eaten by woodland creatures and everything was in their minds and now Crewel has to babysit a bunch of scared teenagers *sigh* great.
I also realise that the Headless Horseman song would be a cool campfire song for teenagers to sing to spook each other.
Since RSA is a hero school, I thought it would be cool if they have a pixie dust reserve as a gift from the fairies and Yuu gets told how to use it when she’s on a quest to save her friends (you bet her ‘wonderful thought’ would be with Grim and Adeuce) and her and the RSA boys do the whole she (we) can fly number. Also, imagine if at one point the gang end up trying to sail the Jolly Rodger.
The song Cruella De Vil, has been changed to Divus Crewel/Professor Crewel by the NRC students and the older years sing it to the first years as a sort of warning to how strict and ruthless their potions teacher is (and as a way to have a laugh because they find scaring children fun)
There’s a secret storage cupboard in Heartslabyul that houses the eat me cookies and drink me bottles. Only the Dorm Leaders and Vice Dorm Leaders know of this.
If anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them

Working Bibliography
This is a (currently incomplete) inventory of the sources I'm pulling from when researching material for Counter/Feint. It will be divided into three sections: General References (for things like sewage treatment, state laws, tax codes, white collar crime, etc), Original Media (for comics, episodes, movies etc), and In-Line References/Allusions (for when a character's narration makes a literary allusion, uses jargon, or directly quotes a line from part of the source material)
some of them will be in MLA format and some won't because i am prone to arbitrary whims

Original Media
Superman: The Animated Series- "World's Finest" - This one started the whole exercise because I thought it was hysterical that Lois had dated Bruce/ found out he was Batman WAY before she learnt anything about Superman's identity. Hilarious.
Superman: TAS- "The Late Mr. Kent"- This one's important to me and my characterization of Clark for about one million separate reasons
Batman: TAS- All of it
Batman #177- notable for Bruce Wayne's love of cubist expressionism and also the character of Roy Rennie who shows up here and never again. He wants to be the Alfred Foundation's publicist so, so, so bad. I have realized his dream
chapter 2 edit: this is also where the Lathrop Gallery comes from! In the comics, the Lathrop Gallery received an endowment from the Alfred foundation
Fraction, Matt, et al. Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen: Who Killed Jimmy Olsen? DC Comics, 2020.- This is in MLA again because it's physically in front of me. It has a profound impact on my characterization, especially Lois's. Her disdain for conspiracy theories and insistence on using the term 'sociogram' over 'conspiracy board' comes from this. It's also the origin of Janie Olsen
Superboy (1949)- I think it's funny to pick and choose elements from this and incorporate it into Clark's backstory arbitrarily. I also think it's funny that I first wrote the line about Clark wanting to kiss Superman if he hadn't BEEN superman before i started reading Superboy because guess what. He forgets he's superboy constantly. and what does he immediately do. Start sighing over superboy. I am SO good at comics
Superboy #85- Especially notable for the appearance of Mightyboy! "Who is Mightyboy?" you might ask. As well you should, since he appeared once in 1960 and never again. However!!!! This is a surprise tool which will help us later because he lives in my brain and also Clark's backstory
World's Finest #285-288- There's just. A lot to unpack here. But I sure have incorporated it into characterization and quirks! Still undecided on if I want Clark to have super hypnosis or not because I think it would be characterful for him to have it and not use it. and also it's extremely stupid as a concept and i love stupid. but also i hate hypnosis
World's Finest #84- Spoiler for the fic, but this premise was so hilarious to me that I immediately decided to replicate it, but with a twist that is typical of my ethos: making bruce step directly onto a rake
Ironically enough, a similar story was presented in Adventure Comics #275, but again. It does not make Bruce step on enough rakes for my taste. Still works as inspiration though!
Superman Annual #11- For the man who has everything. I love this one so so so so much. It greatly informs my understanding and portrayal of Superman, but also it's just a really tight narrative. Also!!! Jason Robin is there!!! Every day I regret placing this fic on a timeline that doesn't align with Jason making an appearance. Lad of all time.
Also important from Superman Annual #11 is the imagery of Batman pathetically presenting a designer rose he had commissioned special for his boy bestie, only for it to be crushed underfoot in the wake of a battle. now there's some symbolism. there's some pathos. there's some grade a pathetic bruce-isms.
Yang, Gene Luen, and Janice Chiang. Superman Smashes the Klan: The Graphic Novel. DC Comics, 2020. - Absolutely phenomenal work that digs into the diaspora elements of Superman's narrative and grapples with The American Ideal, racism, and what it means to stand for your community against violent bigotry. Also the art is soooo charming. I reference this one a bunch because I love it. It's got everything I love about Superman
There's way more to add but I'm tired and this is a working bibliography. I promise more will come
In-Line References/Allusions
Because comics are the way they are, I wanted to make this fic feel like it existed in a bunch of overlapping time periods all at once.
This means that instead of refraining from making references to broader pop culture like I do with other fics, I'm leaning into them instead. Therefore, some of these are going to be deliberate references that I thought would be characterful. Especially since Lois and Clark are reporters, and Jimmy and Bruce went to fancy schools for fancy little lads
"You're killing me, Smalls"- A famous line from The Sandlot (1993). I am unable to resist the pull of low-hanging fruit
"he could always depend on the kindness of strangers"- semi-ironic deployment of a line from A Streetcar Named Desire. on one hand, Clark genuinely trusts in and relies on mankind's desire to do right by each other. on the other, he thinks bruce wayne is a complete and utter tool here. he's being a bit tongue in cheek about how he's relying on a jackass to help him out
"the pale blue light of a sympathetic moon" is from The Drowsy Chaperone. It's such an evocative phrase. I think Clark would enjoy musicals
"Saint Laurent"- Listen. I read fashion blogs for this. I asked my friends who lose their minds over fashion on the regular. I looked through ready to wear collections and slide shows. And while I want to have faith in the Bruce Wayne that lives in my head and nowhere else, I understand that the search for an ethical designer label is a fruitless one. All I can do is say "in this universe, YSL was never acquired by Gucci, and yet it still, inexpicably, has the insufferable ready to wear collection that includes the ugly fucking gentrified rodeo wear."
also a lot of the outfits look like they're designed for haunted little victorian boys. which. [gestures at him]
"Dorothy [...] you're not in Kansas anymore"- I think this one's obvious, but it's a Wizard of Oz reference
“Is there a ‘c’ in ‘absence’?”- Lois's habit of frequently misspelling words comes up in a lot of adaptations and runs, and I think it's incredibly charming
"There better be a thirty on your buyback piece!"- Traditionally, -30- marks the end of copy that's been submitted for editing
Backfielding- Another term for conducting line edits
Ron Troupe- Political analyst for the daily planet. In comics, he was introduced RIGHT before Superman died but I'm playing calvinball here and I like him :) so
Adam Grant- Cat's son! I'm not killing him off, unlike the comics. There's a lot re: The Toyman where i'm just. y'know. i'm just not gonna. look. at whatever's going on there. So it goes with comics
"the gentle way the strongman had spoken to him, telling him about the disarming power of a silly costume, the way performance became its own kind of strength"- referencing a sequence from Superman Smashes the Klan. This will not be the last time
Lan-Shin Lee- For instance, Lan-Shin is from Superman Smashes the Klan! At the end of the original work, she becomes a cub reporter
Carmine Falcone- I still have never read a frank miller comic and you can't make me. but i will steal the occasional character. for flavor. anyway he's either one of the biggest or the biggest ringleader of organized crime in Gotham, depending on the run and adaptation
“While discontinuous in action, perceived surveillance—”- Bruce is paraphrasing a bit of Discipline & Punish here, specifically the part about panopticism
“Have you tried committing a felony?”- This line comes directly from the World's Finest episodes of Superman: the animated series that first inspired this fic
Superman Signal Watch- this one's a classic. As seen in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, the watch works just as the fic describes

Season 8 transformations ratings and my opinions part 1
Okay so I’m doing Season 8-1 because I wanna end with happier vibes. This post should’ve contained Cosmix, Neo Enchantix, Neo Sirenix and Crystal Sirenix but it frankly started getting way too long so um this will contain Cosmix and Neo Enchantix and Sirenix in season 8 will get their own post, why the genuine hell does Season 8 have so many transformations.
Cosmix
Tumblr media
So I’m basing my knowledge on this transformation off the wiki and information I can gather on it so this transformation is for the girls to be able to travel through space and protect the stars.
They gain this transformation via being given it by Queen Doranna which is acceptable in terms of gaining magic transformations given Queen Doranna is the queen of Stars so it makes sense she can grant special powers related to her domain.
In terms of needing to exist it makes sense that the Winx need a special transformation to travel through the cosmos since space is very different from teleporting to different worlds but I must say these designs don’t exactly screams space to me. The wiki says this is based off of 60s American space age fashion which when I googled what that looks like I can see it but frankly I feel like the girls’ clothes should’ve been more spacesuit inspired or incorporated helmets or something in some way because nothing about their designs tell me this transformation uniquely lets the girls travels through the cosmos. If I didn’t know the name and what the inspirations behind these designs are I frankly would’ve never guessed this transformation is for space.
Another thing I dislike about these designs is how uniform it is across the board. I’m not completely against transformations like Cosmix where the girls all gain it together at once to be uniform but the designs tell us nothing about the girls’ unique powers. At most you could guess what the girls’ unique powers are based on their color schemes which is a pretty awful way to differentiate elements since with Bloom you can only guess she has fire powers because she has red hair, Musa maybe you could guess of her pose and Stella because yellow at least for me is mostly associated with the sun.
Transformation sequence wise I love the song it absolutely slaps and definitely invokes themes of space and the transformations are very fast paced with the girls quickly getting into their attire while being surrounded by the cosmos. They once again don’t show off the girls’ individual powers at all which is infuriating because while I’m not sure of a way to incorporate things like fluids and the dragon flame into a space themed design, you can certainly incorporate technology and the FRIKIN SUN into it and also they managed to incorporate their individual elements into the 2d Sirenix transformations even though its water based. Its possible the producers just refuse to do it which is annoying.
The transformation is meh in terms of being special or unique compared to the other transformations. The wiki says they can destroy black holes and regenerate stars with Cosmix which is crazy but the designs hold it back from being special because the designs just look like the girls were in magic winx, got ordered to cover their skin more and decided to glam up their clothes with some stars and change their wings to suit their more covered bodies.
Ratings:
6/10, its definitely not horrible at all but the designs aren’t special and neither is the transformation sequence themselves. I do get their existence and the song slaps. This may change the more transformations I rate and I may decide I was too kind or harsh on this transformation.
Neo Enchantix
Tumblr media
MY EYES. THE PINK. THE UNIFORMITY. IT B U R N S.
Seriously though WHY IS THERE SO MUCH PINK ADDED INTO THESE TRANSFORMATIONS.
Tumblr media
Its frakly insulting how much neon pink they think they need to insert into their designs.
Tumblr media
THEY DIDN’T EVEN GIVE FLORA THE RIGHT SHADE OF PINK I’M GONNA CRY AND THEY REMOVED THE GREEN IN HER WINGS FOR YELLOW??? W H Y??? SHES THE FAIRY OF NATURE WHY DID THEY REMOVE THE GREEN FOR YELLOW???????????
Tumblr media
THEY NEED TO STOP TRYING TO MAKE BLOOM’S COLOR PINK SHE LOOKS BETTER IN BLUE. You cant tell me Season 8 Bloom’s Pink Enchantix looks better than her normal more blue one with bits of pink so its less bland.
They also ruined the wings. Well ruined is a strong word but the wings are becoming so painfully uniform it hurts my very soul. I wasn’t opposed to Techna gaining double wings till I realized it just makes their wings look so uniform I hate it. I hate it. The dresses are uniform too with only Techna having a unique article of clothing. Why. Why. Why. I get they had to cover their midriffs cause people think children have the brains of 2 year olds but did they have to make the dresses the same like w h y. They couldn’t even make the skirts look like the old ones but just longer.
They also seemed to use the inferior Enchantix song for the transformations which tbh it does fit the new sequence for it better but I hate the sequence too so thats points off too, the girls just wave their arms and maybe move their arms to their hair or spin around with their swinging their legs a bit and bam transformed. It doesn’t feel magical, it just feels like a group of 6 girls with very strange dressing procedures or doing a weird mock dance.
Part of my ire to Neo Enchantix is just how much I can compare it to the original Enchantix but its also just BAD like they removed everything that showed off the girls’ individual powers for the same background just with different colors depending on the girls and its so bad like its not unwatchable its a Winx transformation theres enjoyment to receive from it but just watch the original Enchantix or heck even the 3d one, its 1000x better.
Also from what I can gather from comments and googling, they brought Enchantix back for miniaturization?? Now this transformation isn’t just insulting to the original, its blatant nostalgia bait because I’m pretty sure Tynix can do the same thing and I wouldn’t have had to be subjected to watching such a classic and incredible transformation be so butchered when they didn’t even use Enchantix’s main power which was FAIRY DUST TO BREAK DARK SPELLS.
Rating
2/10, it gets a 2 because its Enchantix and I could never rate Enchantix 0 but IT DEFINITELY MAKES ME WANT TO RATE IT 0 FOR TAKING MY CHILDHOOD AND BASHING IT WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER.

After finally getting the time to sit down and watch 1-3 of IQ some notes (in other words spoilers under the cut):
- The animation is ofc insane cause Shaft and the story definitely benefits from where the OG show is at in being able to incorporate later elements earlier
- I actually like that they moved Yang away from the club, since it nudges her away from the “dumb party girl” idiocy certain types act like is her entire personality. Some things are lost but meh
- I like the fact that the “boob jiggle” isn’t everywhere (so far anyway)
- I like that the way they re-imagined Yang pushing Ruby to get out of her shell, namely having Tai mentioning to her that Ruby needs to move away from being so dependent. No, random friends of Yang’s that she goes off with; but just her flashback to that discussion and shifting into trying to get her friends.Basically they merged the idea of Yang pushing Ruby to get out of her shell with the sleepover bit (in the process once again kicking Yang’s comment about dudes to the wind xD). Also side-bit to this, love that Yang locks onto Blake through a crowd of people xD
- Absolutely LOVE Blake’s purple hair highlights and ngl really would love to see that somehow worked in OG show. Though I’m mixed on her more serious personality vs. in the show her showing signs of flirtiness or playfulness (like smiling after taking down the Ursa and Yang’s comment about it in the forest. On one hand it fits given her history, on the other I really like OG version and see it as showing her natural attraction towards Yang.
- Actually like that instead of the locker room + community hall or whatever + the entry area of Beacon, all the meetups happen on the airship heading to Beacon.
- In regards to Adam I’m at a more mixed spot. If they’re going for showing him gaslighting and manipulating both Blake as well as the WF, which is revealed at some point? Love it. If not and its to be taken at face value, then they’ve literally just done what incel shitlords have been wanting in making their HEADCANON into IQ’s canon (not OG show’s canon). Failing to grasp his actual character and real motivations as a co-opter and only using the faunus cause for his own gains; not actually caring about the cause. Even the line that shows his psychopathy is to some degree lessened by having him specifically not caring about the humans vs. OG show that had him being dismissive in general about the lives that would be lost from the train.
- Really like how they’re able to make the school feel bigger and like a full-campus with things like how Ruby and Weiss’s going separate ways results in them going to different sections and it feels like it.
- Even 2D can’t save Cardin from looking both generic white dude as hell and like a total douche xD
- I actually really like the IQ version of unlocking Jaune’s aura
- Love Shion and would love for them to somehow pop up in the OG series at some point.
- Gotta love how even in anime form, Blake isn’t blushing in response to Sun’s wink just staring surprised at him xD Not to mention them draining away any kind of romance tone both in their meetup after the initial run across each other and the coffee info dump afterwards.
- Love them fully showing Yang as a faunus ally calling out Weiss’s bigotry. Also love Yang’s reaction to Blake having cat ears under her bow xD
- ngl a tiny bit disappointed its not multiverse but meh
- Now I just need the dub to fully dive in, cause I’m 100% dub when it comes to RWBY

Drafting my collection inspired by 50's patterns.
Draft 1
Inspired by my 50's pattern mood board I had previously designed, I began extracting magnificent patterns from the 50's also keeping in mind the trends I have previously researched, playing around with the different textures of both the patterns and trends from my mood boards. I wanted to create a variety of different pieces alternating between dresses, trousers and oddly satisfying silhouettes to create something completely different from each other. My first design was influenced by the peculiar zig zag shapes, found at the bottom right of the left hand page, also incorporating different elements of my mood board and making them into a stylish dress which incorporates the vibe of my muse. Ideally, this dress would be made out of wire to incorporates the essence of the open work trend. This is quite a simplistic design however I added the funky, vintage, unusual heel to add some character to the dress.
Tumblr media
Draft 2
Furthermore, my next illustration captures a unique aspect of an unusual fish to and balloon trousers. I wanted to design a collection to be OTT and quirky as well as fashionable, to emit the trendy middle aged publicist and the accessibility of fashion to all age groups which I aim to achieve through the designing process of these illustrations alternating the sizes to make the garment a statement piece. I was influenced by the shapes of each separate pattern such as the elongated triangles that inspired the trousers in this illustration. To further incorporate more depth and accusations to my trends I took inspiration from my the feathery desire trend that I had previously chosen for my 2024 trends. To finish off this piece I decided to bring the feather trend down to the boots which has a really effective impact on the theme.
Tumblr media
Draft 3
For my next design on this mood board, I wanted to incorporate elements of nature hence the leaf structure and flower wrapping around the model. Additionally, I was inspired by an unstructured garment which is something that you don't come across often and strikes as eye catching. I love the whimsical, fairy-tale effect which amplifies the art within fashion which I have chosen to embody through this illustration. Using the open work trend, again, I used the leaves vines to create this effect, I then switched to create a twisted effect around, not only the garment but also the garment as a whole. Moreover I wanted to display a juxtaposition between 2D and 3D therefore making the flowers wrapped on the dress to be 3D contrasting with the 2D leaves.
Tumblr media
Draft 4
From my previous 3 draft designs, I wanted to emphasis on the smaller detail of each pattern, zooming in on the intertwining, cross over shapes to add more depths and detail to my designs and make them, overall, more interesting. I wanted to mix the intriguing features with the open work SS2024 trends through analysing the shapes of each pattern, particularly the balloon shaped skirt in this illustration. Therefore, I included aspects of this through adding a cross hatching inspired bandeau to.
Tumblr media
Draft 5
Draft 5 features a more floral like structure, particularly from the flower head top shape and straw like skirt which I tried to link closely, when I illustrated, to open work material. Additionally, I creatively carried on the theme of flower heads and winded them round the left arm. However, next time I would like to perhaps make the flower heads a little bigger and detailed embracing the art of fine art, juxtaposing from my weird strange models. Moreover, I then elevated the skirt with a combination of feathers and straw like tassels, i believe this adds a more fairy tale twist which makes the whole garment more feminine whilst still keeping the theme of 50's pattern in mind.

2. conduct research into their life stories
Jack Stauber - introduction and inspiration
Jack Stauber is a 27 year old internet personality born and based in Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at the University of Pittsburg and graduated with a major in junior marketing and a minor in studio arts. He’s a very popular YouTuber, with most of his music and animated works being used in internet memes, and featured on Youtube, TikTok, and other social media services.
He is best known for the Retro and VHS aesthetic feel to his animated work, as well as his constant use of mixed media. He often incorporates elements of live action, 2D animation, claymation, and crude 3D computer animation into his works. He is also known for his surreal, weird, absurdist art style that can at times be very disturbing.
His music — both independent and the ones accompanying his animations — mostly falls under the genre of Avant-pop, synth-pop, hypnagogic pop, and indie-pop. But he often mixes elements of other genres like folk, jazz, lo-fi, and rock into his music. His style of singing is very varied and unique as well, being able to hit deep lows and high falsettos. This flexible vocal performance adds to overall feel and tone of his pieces.
His work often evokes a sense of anemoia (nostalgia of a time or place one has never known). The poorly drawn MS paint animation, morphing claymation, and quirky live-action shots fused together into a surreal fever dream is what makes his music videos so special. It's perfect to watch it at 3AM. It feels abstract and scary, but can be relaxing and meaningful at the same time.
Stauber's creations always evoke a deeply profound sadness, conveying all of the innate helplessness and dread we feel on a day to day basis, but in a way we can't ignore. Its the perfect medium for the kind of stories he wants to tell.
Jack spent most of his childhood surrounded by vintage items from the 80s and 90s, which would later serve as a big inspiration for his art style and music. He also says he was influenced by many of the cartoons and tv shows he watched as child. One big example is Rugrats, which Jack claims was his favourite cartoon growing up, and he used to really love Klasky Csupo's art style in the show, especially in the pilot episode. Klasky Csupo’s influence in Stauber’s work can be most seen in  “five” and “hot dogs.” Stauber has also included some audio clips from Rugrats in his work as a homage to Csupo.
Stauber also claims that his favourite movie — Pink Floyd's “The Wall” — was a big influence when it came to his creepy and surreal art style. Some other cartoon influences include pink panther, merry melodies, and Fleischer Studios cartoons. When it came to his claymation work, Jack says that Bruce Bickford (a famous claymation animator known for his surrealist art style) was a big inspiration.
A lot of the music that Jack listened to growing up were also a big inspiration behind his music. Jack said that he listened to a lot of "campy alt" music from the 80s from his mother, and a lot of "good ol' dead and jazz funk" from his father. Jack also said that in high school, he used to listen to a lot of art rock and experimental pop
He initially started creating music on Soundcloud in early 2010,  and also joined an band known as Joose, where he became the lead singer.

Why It Worked: The Princess and The Frog
Tumblr media
Introduction: The Princess and The Frog is an animated musical fantasy romantic comedy film. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, the film stars Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Keith David, Michael-Leon Wooley, Jim Cummings, Jennifer Lewis, Jennifer Cody, John Goodman, Oprah Winfrey and Terrence Howard. The film was released on December 11, 2009 and recieved very positive reviews from critics and audiences (85% of 200 reviews agregated by Rotten Tomatoes gave an average rating of 7.4/10). The film grossed $269 million on a budget of $105 million. For the past decade, I've grown to love this movie more and more with each passing year. Having rewatched it recently, I now firmly believe this is one of Disney's best films. In this post, I'd like to go into detail as to why.
Tumblr media
The Plot: Based on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, The Frog Prince, mixed with the material in The Frog Princess by E.D. Maker, this film tells the story of Tiana, a waitress trying to earn enough money to start her own restaurtant. She encounters a talking frog, who's actually Prince Naveen turned into a frog by Dr. Facilier. He agrees to help Tiana get her her restaurant if she helps him turn back into a prince by recreating the classic tale of The Frog Prince. This backfires and now they're both frogs hopping around the buyou with their gator friend, Louis and a cajun firefly named Ray, to find a way to reverse the spell they were put under. The film is really a subversion of classic fairy tale tropes that makes the film feel fresh and new. The goal for our leading lady is not to fall in love with a prince but to make her childhood dream come true. What also makes this film standout is how magical they make New Orleans, paying tributes to jazz music and cajun cuisine. I also found the humor to be very funny, with many of the jokes getting a great laugh out of me. One of the funniest scenes in the film is when Tiana and Naveen outwit a trio of frog hunters. The slapstick and perfect timing had me in stitches. What really makes the story so engaging is the animation. It's too bad Disney hasn't used 2D animation in their recent films (not to say they don't look amazing in 3D) because the animation in the Princess and The Frog is amazing. The character movements feel so smooth and fluid and they're designs are unique and well defined. It should also be noted that some 3D was used for background elements yet are coated with a 2D paint so well you never would've noticed.
Tumblr media
Cast and Characters: The cast of this movie did outstanding jobs voicing these characters, who are all well developed and very likable. Starting with our leading lady, Tiana is a smart hardworking woman that's determined to start up her restaurant. She's also sassy, funny and a great cook. Anika Noni Rose was perfect as Tiana as gives the character a very determined and no-nonsense tone in her voice. Prince Naveen starts off as an arrogant playboy that only wants to live a carefree life. However, the more time he spends with Tiana, the more he realizes that not everything is just going to be handed to him. This is especially true during the scene when he and Tiana are making gumbo and he comes to realize he's so used to having everything be done for him that he doesn't even know how to take care of himself. Bruno Campos gave a very stellar performance as Naveen, giving him such charm and funny lines while also selling the more personal aspects of his character. Louis the gator is such a fun comic relief that plays a mean trumpet. He easily brings out some of the best laughs and Michael-Leon Wooley gave a very memorable performance as the character. Ray the cajun firefly just might be one of Jim Cummings' best vocal performances, up there with Darkwing Duck, Pete, and (of course) Winnie The Pooh and Tigger. Ray might appear to have a screw or too loose, but he's actually a really smart, brave and reliable ally who's more than willing to help his friends. His love for Evangeline (which is actually the North Star) feels very genuine even if it might come across as odd at first. Then there's the film's made baddie, Dr. Facilier (often referred to as The Shadow Man). Dr. Facilier is every bit as charming as he is sinister. He's manipulative, he's smart, he's charsmatic and he loves what he does. Keith David was excellent in the role, giving him a deep yet unsettling tone in his voice.
Tumblr media
Super Supporting Players: This film has one of the strongest supporting cast I have ever seen. Each of the supporting and even minor characters leave a lasting impression and make the film feel lived in. Lawrence, Naveen's butler, acts as the secondary antagonist of the film, being the catalyst of Naveen's desire for a carefree lifestyle. He sides with the Shadow Man and poses as Naveen while the prince is a frog in order to marry Charlotte La Bouff. Speaking of Charlotte, is very much nothing like the standard spoiled brat. Rather than be snobbish, selfish and rude, Lottie is a true friend to Tiana and is willing to help her get her restaurant. Believe me folks, after having to deal with the likes of Gem Stone, Princess Morbucks, Sincerity (What About Mimi), and Tricia Holmes (6teen), Charlotte is a breath of fresh air. Her father, Eli (aka Big Daddy) is also a very kind and caring figure who, despite spoiling his daughter, clearly raised her well as she gets her generosity from him. Mama Odie is a wise 197 year old blind lady that not only helps our heroes on their journey, but helps them understand the difference between what they want vs what they need. This is echoed by Eudora (Tiana's Mom) earlier in the film, who even in the limited amount of screen time she had exerts such a motherly personality and has authentic chemistry with her daughter. Then there's James (Tiana's Dad), the main driving force behind Tiana's desire to open her restaurant. Despite succumbing to the frequently used "dead parent" trope, every second he's on screen is imperative to the story. He's a kind hard working man who dreamed of opening his own restaurtant with his daughter Tiana. When she tells her Dad about the wishing star, he gives her great advice: "that little star can only take you part of the way. You got to help it along with some hard work of your own and then you can do anything you set your mind to." What truly makes this supporting cast come alive are the stupendous voice work from the actors who portrayed them. Jennifer Cody was fantastic as Lottie, making her sound so energetic and lively. John Goodman is always a treat to hear and he brings such a humble fatherly presence to Eli. Jennifer Lewis perfectly captures the sass and erratic nature of Mama Odie and is an amazing singer. Peter Bartlett right captured the bumbling mannerisms of Lawrence and when he's disguised as Naveen he exerts more confidence in his voice. Oprah Winfrey, who was also a consultant for the film, played Eudora beautifully as a kind and caring mother and they couldn't have picked a better actor than Terence Howard for the role of James.
Tumblr media
Songs and Music: Randy Newman is a musical genius! Every single song in this film is written wonderfully with an awesome beat, wonderful lyrics and the amazing vocal talents of the stars. Starting with the opening track after the lovely melody prologue, Down in New Orleans perfectly introduces the audience to this city and what it's like to live here. The late Dr. John brought such authenticity to the song being a New Orleans native and he had great singing chops. Almost There, Tiana's number, is not so much an I want song, but more like "I'm so close I can almost taste it." Anika Noni Rose has great singing talents and carried that long final note like a champ. The villain song, Friends From The Other Side is (in my opinion) one of the best Disney villain songs. It perfectly captures the charismatic and manipulative nature if Dr. Facilier and Keith David's baritone singing makes this all the more memorable. When We're Human is an upbeat song that showcases the excellent singing talents of Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos and Michael-Leon Wooley as they sing about what they'll do when they're human. It also makes great use of the trumpet, the go-to instrument for jazz. Ray is given the distinct honor of singing 2 songs, which are polar opposites yet are both wonderfully well crafted musical numbers. The first is Gonna Take You There, which is a classic cajun song in with Ray sings while he and his firefly family take our heroes to Mama Odie's. It's bounce, it's fun, it's makes great use of the accordion, it's just a great song to listen to. The second is Ma Belle Evangeline, a slow yet beautiful love ballad Ray sings for Evangeline. Even though Ray is singing to a star, it feels very genuine with his mix of French compliments and Louis' slow trumpet playing. Than there's the last musical number before the reprise of the opening track, Dig A Little Deeper. This is my personal favorite song in the film, and that's saying something because they're all great. Dig A Little Deeper incorporates a choir of roseate spoonbills to make it look like a church service on Sunday. It also has a great message behind it about finding what you need versus trying to get what you want. Also, Anika Noni Rose coming in with that extra verse was the perfect cherry on top. In addition to these spectacular musical numbers, Randy Newman also made a very memorable score incorporating strings and strong brass for intense scenes and some soft, subtle tunes for the quiet moments. Where the score truly shines is during Ray's death and funeral. From the sad reprise of Ma Belle Evangeline all the way up to the music slowy but surely picking up as Ray essentially becomes the brightness star in the sky next to Evangeline, this scene best showcases what a great score this film has. The song that plays during the credits, Never Knew I Needed by Ne-Yo, was also the picture bookend to the film, capturing the film's central message in a wonderfully crafted pop ballad with a beautiful piano tune.
Tumblr media
Where It Falters: 👆. No, seriously this film is still a 10/10 in my book, but I personally would've amended this response from Lottie to "Travis, when I said later, I really meant not ever." Still shoots the guy down but without making her speak for all women. This concludes my meaningless nitpick.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: The Princess and The Frog is without a doubt one of Disney's best films and Tiana is my personal favorite Disney Princess. The animation is spectacular, the characters are great, the songs are all wonderful, the voice acting is superb and it delivers a great message of finding what you need versus trying to get what you want. If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend giving this film a watch on Disney+ if you have it. Thank you so much for reading and I'll see you soon ;)

This addition of Why It Worked is dedicated in memory of my grandmother, Margaret "Peggy" Simpson. I'll see you in Heaven Grandma.

Lesson 29 Summary
Everyone starts to prepare for their upcoming midterm exams.
***SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT***
Tumblr media
Mammon, Levi, Beel, and MC are hanging out in MC’s room. Everyone is relaxing and they discuss how great it is that they no longer have to worry about rehearsals for the play. Levi then reminds the group that even if they don’t have to worry about the play, they still have midterm exams coming up.
Interesting tidbit - We learn that Belphie is on par with Satan in terms of book smarts and learning ability. In fact, he might actually be smarter because he sleeps most of the time and is still at the same level.
Tumblr media
MC encounters Lucifer in the hallway later and he pulls them aside for a moment to talk to them. He explains that he was finally able to talk to Diavolo a bit about what was on his mind, and thanks MC for encouraging him to do so. Lucifer then checks in on MC and asks how they are feeling. He explains that he believes Diavolo is worried about them as well.
MC explains to Lucifer what Solomon told them the other day about how controlling demons as they did had caused him muscle pain the first time. Lucifer is surprised to hear this, but encourages MC to talk with Solomon about it more.
Tumblr media
Later at RAD, MC is talking to Solomon and he explains that he thinks it’s highly unusual that MC never had any after effects from using their powers to subdue Lucifer and his brothers.
Solomon then shows MC “The Ring of Wisdom”. He explains that it’s a gift he received from Michael when he was at a “low point” in his life. After receiving the ring, he then gained the power to control demons. The first thing he tried to do was build a “house” (palace?) and he used the demons under his control to accomplish this. And the following day he was so sore he couldn’t move.
Tumblr media
Lucifer then sends out a group text, calling for a mandatory student council meeting for MC + his brothers.
Diavolo announces that MC will now be tested on the same level as the rest of the students. Previously they were given a different difficulty of exams since they were an exchange student. Diavolo explains that his intention is to make sure they have a better understanding of their powers since they can now control demons.
Mammon and Belphie express concern that the exams might be too difficult for MC, but Lucifer informs everyone that Satan will be helping MC study.
Tumblr media
The first subject Satan is going to tutor them in is Seductive Speechcraft. Levi joins MC for this tutoring session too. Satan asks MC a couple different questions about their study materials, including the first steps a demon should take when trying to corrupt a human:
Kindly smile when greeting a human
Tell them you’re a demon to build trust
Levi goes first with the “practical exercise” and attempts to seduce MC. He quotes from one of his manga/anime and it...does not go well. 😂 Satan then gives a demonstration on its supposed to work when done properly by also attempting to seduce MC. Satan is apparently so good at this, that even Levi finds himself getting seduced. 😳
MC then takes their turn and a quick “meow” is all it takes to pass the lesson and seduce Satan. 🐱
Tumblr media
Later, MC goes to Levi’s room where they discuss their Seductive Speechcraft lesson with Satan. Levi complains about how difficult it is for him, but then MC suggests he try to incorporate elements of his dating sim experience into his Speechcraft. He gets pretty excited about this idea and decides to practice with MC.
After some adorkable flirting, Levi asks MC if they want to spend the night in his room so he can keep practicing with him.
Tumblr media
Next day of studying with Satan covers curses and hexes. Mammon is MC’s study partner for this session. Satan starts with a brief quiz:
Imprecatio is Latin for curse
Moving on to practical exercises, Satan asks MC to curse Mammon. MC’s spell doesn’t turn out quite right however, and Mammon ends up being “overcome with desire”. He confesses how much he loves MC, and Satan finally has to kick him before he glomps on MC.
Mammon then passes out, and Satan performs a small spell on MC to treat them for any after effects brought on by casting the curse. While Mammon is unconscious, MC has the opportunity to makeout with Satan.
Tumblr media
Mammon and MC are now back in his room, while he recovers from the ass kicking he received at the hands of Satan. MC attempts the spell that Satan used on them earlier, and manages to successfully heal Mammon.
MC is then given the opportunity to flirt with Mammon a bit (which I take because of course), and I’m 99% sure Mammon gets laid. 😳
Tumblr media
The following day, MC encounters Luke and Simeon out in town. They talk about how studying has been going for the exams, and Luke suggests that he and Simeon come over and study with MC.
Next up on Satan’s study schedule is Magical Potions, with Beel and Luke. (turns out Simeon was unable to come.)
Beel expresses his concern that he might not be able to resist drinking the potion before it’s finished. But since they are doing the lesson in the twins room, Satan has Belphie nearby (napping currently) to stop Beel if need be.
Satan starts by listing the ingredients for the “Elixir of Cerebral Stimulation”:
Powdered unicorn hoof
Bittergrass root
Caladrius blood
As everyone begins the practical portion of their study session, Satan wakes up Belphie so he can rein in Beel before he gets too carried away and tries to eat the ingredients. MC’s potion seems to be turning out really well though, so before anyone can stop him, Beel drinks some.
(Why couldn’t MC just use their pact to stop Beel? The world may never know…)
Satan tries to warn Beel that the potion isn’t done so they don’t know what exactly it will do. But it’s too late - Beel has already consumed it.
Tumblr media
The results of the potion have turned Beel into a cat. And a really freaking adorable scene unfolds in Satan’s bedroom.
MC is given the option of either snuggling with Beel while Satan heads to the kitchen to make the antidote. Or making out and cuddling Satan (and I’m pretty sure Satan gets laid too).
Favorite scenes -

Can we have some unpopular Sonic opinions?
I tried to cram in a lot, so I hope this satisfies you. :P I tried to stick to the ones that I haven't brought up quite as often, since by this point, we all know that I think IDW's storytelling is dire, SA2's story is overrated, X Eggman is an embarrassing portrayal (at least from season 2 onwards), Blaze shouldn't be handcuffed to Silver, Shadow's backstory had issues with or without the Black Arms, Neo Metal Sonic looks silly, etc. But anyway, here we go:
- Knuckles may be tricky to incorporate into plots that don't relate to Angel Island, but making him obsessed with his duties is no better than having him forget about Angel Island entirely.
- I like Marine, and never found her annoying. Oh, I understood what they were trying to do with her, but I honestly wasn't put off by her, and found her Aussie lingo more endearing if anything. Since her debut was during the period in my life where where I couldn't stand Sonic himself, I instead thought he was irritating (and hypocritical) for getting annoyed with her for doing shit he would often be guilty of.
- Silver is just as guilty of being shoehorned into games and plots as the Deadly Six are. Having more fans than the latter is irrelevant, since we're still talking about a character who constantly has to time travel in order to be present.
- Speaking of Silver, if he has to stick around, please do something different with him. They've pulled the doomed future routine multiple times now, and it's been boring every single time. I wasn't interested when it involved Iblis. I wasn't interested when it involved Knuckles drinking the edgy Kool Aid. I wasn't interested when it involved a council of dumbasses... give it a rest already.
- The Tails Doll can work as a mildly creepy thing, with maybe more to it than meets the eye when it's time for a boss fight or what have you. But the memes about him stealing your soul are just dumb, and I thought it was dumb even back in my teenage youth.
- “Eggman is supposed to be clownish!” Yeah, well he's also meant to be a genuine villain with a 300 IQ. These qualities don't have to be mutually exclusive.
- “Sonic is supposed to have attitude!” Yeah, well that's not the same thing as being an absolute cunt. Sonic was only ever meant to come off as having an edge compared to Mario. He was never meant to be a GTA-tier protagonist.
- Rouge is not a villain, and never was a villain. Literally the whole point of her role in SA2 was to reveal that she was working against Eggman and Shadow the whole time, albeit using sneakier tactics to do so. You'd think all those people who exult SA2's story would remember this, but apparently not. She barely even qualifies as an anti-hero, since aside from stealing the Master Emerald, she rarely does anything morally questionable otherwise. She's got a lot more good in her than people give her credit for.
- Captain Whisker is a better Eggman Nega than the actual Eggman Nega. And as far as robot characters in this franchise go, Johnny's design is pretty underrated.
- I don't like Iblis or Mephiles, but I DO like Solaris, and it annoys me that it was out of focus for most of the story due to all the time spent on its less interesting halves. Had they kept the backstory with the Duke and his experiments, and worked from there, I think they could have provided an interesting contrast with Chaos (since Solaris can also qualify as a monster with a sympathetic backstory) instead of recycling the surface level schtick.
- Black Doom may technically be just as bad as Mephiles, Nega, Scourge, Mimic, etc, since he's yet another villain with one-note characterization and fucked over Eggman. But because he never gained a disproportionate fandom, he doesn't annoy me to the same extent. It's easier to ignore him by comparison, and his Dr. Claw voice and face shaped like a lady's delicate part make him enjoyable to mock.
- Likewise, while Lyric is also on the same level as these other villains, it's easier to dismiss him because I was never invested in the Boom games anyway, and being an obvious alternate universe (compared to Sonic X or IDW, which retain the Modern designs and plot elements), it never had an effect on the main series. I also unironically like his design, and if nothing else, at least this snake didn't start a hypnotism fetish across the internet.
- Sally - and the rest of the Freedom Fighters for that matter - have had their importance in the franchise severely inflated. They may have been lucky to be the face of popular media (SatAM and Archie), but they're not these magnificent entities that the game characters are but a speck of dust in comparison to. Having a “legacy” doesn't make them more entitled to shit than any other character, old or new.
- Conceptually, the treasure hunting gameplay is one of the better alternate gameplay styles IMO. But it was let down in SA2 by its one track minded radar (the levels may have been big, but I don't think that would have been an issue on its own if the radar was better). If they brought it back and made it more like SA1's treasure hunting, I'd be all for it, although it would probably be better suited for a spinoff title.
- This goes for a lot of games, but when it comes to 2D, I prefer sprites over models. Not that the Rush models are bad (though the ones in Chronicles sure as fuck are), but the sprites in Mania and the Advance trilogy are just so charming and full of character.
- I actually like Marble Zone. Yeah, the level design is a bit blocky, but I love the concept of an underground temple prison, mixed with lava elements in a zone that otherwise isn't a traditional volcano level.
- I also like Sandopolis Zone. Again, completely understand why it's not the most popular zone around, but I've been a sucker for the Ancient Egyptian aesthetic since childhood (you can thank Crash 3 for that), and Act 1 is visually stunning.
- I prefer the JP soundtrack for Sonic CD over the US version overall... but I also prefer Sonic Boom over You Can Do Anything.
- SA2's soundtrack isn't bad by any means - I love Rouge's tracks, and The Last Scene is one of my favourite pieces of music - but as far as variety goes, it's a step down from SA1's soundtrack.
- If Sonic X-Treme had been released, it probably would have been unenjoyable and confusing. Whatever your thoughts on SA1, it was probably the better option between the two as far as Sonic's first legitimate translation into 3D goes.
- I have no qualms with Modern Sonic and the other Modern designs and characters, but I also fully acknowledge that changing gears from Adventure onwards - and doing it with a great amount of fanfare - was always going to create one of the biggest divides in the fandom, and fans shouldn't act surprised that this happened. The fact that they felt the need to hype up a new design and direction in the first place (compared to Mario, who has mostly been the same since the beginning, with only the occasional minor change with little fanfare) also indicates that they weren't confident enough in Sonic and his universe being the way it was, which often gets ignored by all the “SEGA have no confidence!!!” complaints you see with their recent games.
- Unleashed did not deserve the incredibly harsh reviews it received back in the day... but it doesn't deserve its current sacred cow status either. It had more effort put into it than '06 to be sure, and I can respect that, but much of it was misguided effort, and even if you like the Werehog, you have to admit that the idea came at the absolute worst time. The intro cutscene may be awesome, as is the Egg Dragoon fight, but 2% doesn't make up the entire game. Chip was also quite annoying, and I wasn't particularly sad when he pressed F in the chat at the end.
- On the other hand, while Colours definitely has its shortcomings, and people have every right to criticse those shortcomings, a lot of its most vocal detractors tend to have a stick up their arse about the game because people actually enjoyed it, and it had a gimmick that people actually liked. Yes, it may have been the first game to have those writers everyone hates, but then SA1 was the first game to give the characters alternate gameplay styles and have other villains upstage Eggman, so...
- Forces is absolutely not on the level of '06. It's nowhere close. A game being flawed does not make it the next '06, clickbait YouTubers. Or should I say, the game they want to retroactively apply '06's reception to, since they've been trying hard to magically retcon '06's own quality...
- To echo @beevean, ALL of the 3D stories have their issues. SA1 is probably the most well-rounded of them on the whole, but even that one isn't perfect.
- To echo another opinion, although I do love SA1, I'm not crazy over the idea of a remake, and would prefer them to just take Sonic's gameplay from SA1 and work from there. Because with a remake, you're stuck in a hard spot: Do you keep it the way it is bar the expected graphical upgrades, and risk accusations of not doing anything to actually improve the experience? Or do you try to address past criticisms, and risk the wrath of the fans who will inevitably go on a #NotMyAdventure crusade about it? What people fail to consider is that the Crash and Spyro remakes were accepted gracefully because their original iterations were still unanimously beloved for the most part, whereas SA1 - and especially SA2 - have always been divisive, and have only gotten moreso over the years.
- People take their preferences for the character's voice actors too seriously. I have my own favourites like anyone else, but I don't make a big deal out of it.
- And with fandom voice actors, they usually focus too much on doing a basic impression of their preferred official voice actor, and not enough on the acting. So you end up getting a lot of fan voices who sound like decent impressions of Ryan Drummond or Jason Griffith on the surface, but they sound utterly empty beyond that impression, because there's no oomph or depth to the actual emotions. They think about the actor rather than the character, when it should really be the other way around.
- The thing with Ian Flynn is that he is capable of telling a decent story, and he can portray some characters well. But he's proven time and time again that everything will go off the rails if he's given too much freedom (ironic, given how quick he is to point the finger at mandates when something goes wrong).
- Ian Flynn and Shiro Maekawa are not the only people in the world who are allowed to write for Sonic. I understand that one should be cautious when seeking out new writing talent, but for all the fandom's accusations of playing it safe, they sure aren't in a rush to experiment outside of their own comfort zone.
- And of course, the big one: You don't fix the franchise's current problems by crawling back to its previous problems. It's much more helpful and constructive to discuss the good and bad alike with each of the games. Less “THIS GOOD, MODERN BAD”, and more “This could work, but maybe without that part...”

Alright, long post about TWEWY The Animation Episode 1 Underneath!
Tumblr media
MY BOY. THERE. IN THE ANIMATED FLESH. I love the style. I love how distinctive everyone is, and how true-to-the-game it looks. I think they translated still images into animation beautifully. And, if in the end it remains shallow, at least it's pretty. I can't to see Joshua.
Alright. So, overall, it was good to okay. I had goosebumps when Twister started playing. The music truly ties my emotions to this game in a delightful way. I hope they'll incorporate more into the show. Let's dig into the good stuff first!
1) The animation. It's crisp, it's fun, it's the game to a t. I think they really hit it out of the park with it.
Tumblr media
Look at that classic Shiki pose! I love how they incorporated so many elements of the game into the show.
Tumblr media
Sprinkled throughout the episode you can see the different names and symbols of the brands. I thought this was a very clever way to tease them and make them present for fans of the game, without being overwhelming to anyone new. Additionally, I doubt that they'll be important at all in the animation - I don't see them playing dress up haha.
2) The music - this is actually both a pro and con. I love the elements of the Game in the Animation. Overall, I think they blended it very well. However, I hate the version of Twister they picked for the opening, and I really hope they change it up episode-to-episode. It's probably one of my least favourite versions of Twister and it's just... not a pump up version of it. Ultimately, I'd rather the original.
3) Introduction of characters - I have some complaints about this, which I'll get into later, but overall I was happy with how many they introduced and how they introduced them. They defined their personalities (Beat, my fave himbo, Kariya and Uzuki them lazy mischievous Reapers, etc, Neku being a Lonely Boi). I thought the established them well, if not fumbling things in other places.
Tumblr media
4) Design of noise: Fuck, they're beautiful and dangerous. I love how they've taken these flat 2D characters and turned them into something a little more dynamic. The colours are great and bright, and I didn't think I'd love them. I'd serious get art of these guys!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also the "static" as they appear/disappear I thought was nicely done.
5) I like how playful the show is despite the dark themes. It let's itself be fun:
Tumblr media
WLIKE WE SYNCED UP, EH???
Okay, now... some negatives. As much as I enjoyed episode one, boy howdy do I have some criticisms, and as far as these go they're pretty common for adaptations. I recognize my bias as someone who loves the game and has poured a lot of time into it, but I still am kind of worried.
1) Pacing + Character Development: WOW THREE DAYS IN AN EPISODE. That's a rush!!! That's so much crammed into one episode. The characters never get to breath and be defined beyond that initial introduction in a way. As I said earlier, it never let's the horror of the situation set in. I understand there's a huge difference between games and animation as mediums, and I also get that adaptions will always lose something that another form really embraces, but the big thing to me about this game is loss and time. There are periods of silence where characters stand and sit with their thoughts. The Animation gives them no time to deal with that and I think a lot of weight and beauty is lost through this. I'm coming at this as a person who knows the future - I've played the game - but the game was never subtle with foreshadowing, and frankly this episode had none. Shiki never checks her phone. She's never reserved. She's 100% genki girl. And that's a little tragic if you know her story. Neku doesn't ponder his lost memories - he isn't given time to! - and we don't get to see how much this bothers him. Beyond the first few Noise deaths, it doesn't feel like the, put bluntly, fucked-upness of the Reaper's Game ever gets a chance to settle in.

2) I didn't have high expectations for pin utilization or brands. I love how they've blended the pin symbols and the use of them onto the screen as Neku activates his psychs (occasionally).
However, my big complaint is there's really no explanation of what they are or how they're activated or even the fact that Shiki couldn't use them (although I do love how the animation shows her fighting with Mr. Mew <3). This isn't a problem per se, especially as it's a major game mechanic thing, but I would have loved to see some time dedicated to it. It's just such a big part of the game. Looking at the pin 777 gives Shiki he says it'll become useful/valuable depending on the future. So, maybe we'll see further development. Please please please have some Tin Pin Slam!!
Tumblr media
3) As a direct result of 1 - this scene just didn't feel as !!! shocking to me. That being said, I still thought they did a great job with the visuals here. It was... okay. But again, I'm willing to admit that playing this scenario vs watching it is probably a huge factor.
4) I don't know how to say this, or at least put it eloquently, but I think the Animation really fell flat in the first episode. My Rule Of Anime is if it doesn't catch me in four episodes, consider dropping it. As an outsider, I don't know how I'd react to episode one, but as an insider while I loved seeing something I love and am passionate about brought to life it just didn't hit right in so many ways. The characters were flat, the pace felt rushed, and while I care about the characters, I worry what I would think of them if I didn't have prior knowledge. Like Shiki looking at her phone. When that moment hit - when the game explained WHY - every time she was caught looking at her phone just hit me. Then, in future play throughs, I noticed it so much more. So, I worry a little bit.
Overall, I am a little diappointed - my hopes were waaaaaay too high - but I'm excited to see what comes next. As I've said, I'm hoping they're pushing through this to go more in depth later. If they don't develop the relationship between Shiki and Neku I just don't see the [Major Event] that happens in the future hitting hard emotionally. It feels like the story beats of the game are getting skipped over and I think it's the future detriment of the series. But! I'm getting ahead of myself. This is episode one! Lots to come.
I loved how the episode ended, sprinkling in bits of lore. I am excited.
Also, Minamimoto and Hanekoma are FINE AND DAMN, THEY LOOK AMAZING (tho Minamimoto looks... much younger than in game, he's still A++ he can SOHCAHTOA me anytime whew).
Tumblr media
And done! Thanks for sticking around <3 Let's all cry about this and the new Neo trailer together!!

Game Title: Arknights
Genre: Strategy: Tower Defense, Strategy
Target Demographic: Teens and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Yostar Limited. (2020). Arknights [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.YoStarEN.Arknights
Arknights is a tower defense strategy game that allows players to place characters at certain locations on the map with a variety of different abilities they can use to take out their enemies. It is a simple concept filled with complexities. I absolutely love this game and am currently still playing it. I love the idea of setting up a defense fortification to thwart the enemies’ plans of destroying your base. The game’s aesthetic is based on eastern anime art styles which is right up my alley of games I enjoy playing. The only thing I don’t like is that the game has a lot of “dead” periods where there is not much content and you are just stuck waiting weeks and weeks for something new to do in the game.
The game plays very well. It is very responsive to your inputs and you can even slow down or pause the game to think of your next move if needed. The characters’ abilities are very detailed and easy to understand so coming up with ideal placements for your units is a skill that can be mastered quickly. The only thing I would do is to make the patches come a little quicker so there aren’t long periods of waiting for content. This is probably going to be my main source of inspiration for my capstone game. I want to make a tower defense game with many different kinds of characters that are used to defeat the enemies. The main idea I would want to take from this game and add to mine is the anime art style and map layout where they use tiles on the floor as locations to place units down.
Since Arknights is a originally a game from China, the global version of the game did not receive some of the special edition skins that only the Chinese version has which I hope will change one day.
 Game Title: Alchemy Stars
Genre: Puzzle, Strategy
Target Demographic: Teens and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Proxima Beta. (2021). Alchemy Stars [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.proximabeta.baiyeus
Alchemy Stars is a puzzle strategy game where you have to have your character walk over as many tiles as possible that are matching in the same color in order to attack the enemy. There are four colors and each of them represent an element (Fire, Water, Forest, and Thunder). You can make your own team composed of characters of these elements in order to defeat the enemy. The characters all have unique abilities such as changing the color of the tiles to match the one you want and enhance your characters abilities like allowing them to attack twice in one turn. You can strategize and plan your path accordingly and defeat the enemy. This is a brand-new game that just came out about a week ago and I am already addicted. This matching tile mechanic is very simple to understand and makes you feel great for getting multiple matching tiles in a row, resulting in big attack combos. It is hard to say anything negative at this moment since the game is so new, but I can say that there is a stamina system in this game which you must use to play the game. Once you run out, you have to wait until it replenishes itself over time in order to play again.
The game plays very well and is responsive to your inputs. It felt clunky and slow when I tried to play on an emulator like Bluestacks, but runs perfectly fine on my Android phone. This game will be another huge inspiration for my capstone game, with its simple mechanics, but complex routes to plan out in your head. One thing I would want to carry over from this game to my capstone game would be adding a long-term goal for the players to achieve. Alchemy Stars has a special character you can unlock for free, but the requirements are very long and tedious. However, the character is extremely powerful and looks amazing so it is something I look forward to putting in the work to obtain, giving me a reason to want to play the game every day.
 Game Title: Epic Seven
Genre: Turn-Based Role-Playing Game
Target Demographic: Teen and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Smilegate Megaport. (2018). Epic Seven [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stove.epic7.google
Epic Seven is a turn-based role-playing game that consists of a team of four characters with various abilities to defeat enemies. I was super into this game for awhile but I stopped playing after reaching the end game. At first, I loved everything about the game. It had nice vibrant anime style characters which I loved. The mechanics were simple and easy to learn since it was turn-based. You had an unlimited amount of time to decide what your next move was going to be so you can plan out all the different possibilities in your head. As I progressed, through the game I noticed that your characters needed to have better gear in order to progress. I was okay with that but then I found out that in order to get good gear, you had to do to this same dungeon for an extremely long time. The gear you received had random stats on it so it was based on luck and chance that you got a piece that your character can use. And you needed gear for four different characters. I ended spending a huge amount of time doing this single dungeon and it killed the fun for me. I did not want to play anymore because of this reason.
If not for this reason, this was still a great game. The visuals and mechanics were great. For my capstone game, I would like to incorporate some of the abilities of the characters that I really liked into my characters. I think it would help make my characters unique and fun to play.
Game Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Genre: Turn-Based Role-Playing Game
Target Demographic: Teen and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Square Enix. (2016). Epic Seven [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFBEWW
Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius is a turn-based role-playing game based on the Final Fantasy franchise. You create a party of five characters from the Final Fantasy Universe. Each of them has special abilities that you use to defeat waves of enemies and bosses. I was into this game when I played, but I have since stopped. I enjoyed the combat and the art style was an old school 2D sprite style that was popular in the early days of gaming on consoles like the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. This brought a lot of nostalgia for me since I grew up playing games on those consoles. However, this game has a unique system that I was not too fond of. Each character has an item that you can unlock when you obtain the character. You basically have to build a friendship gauge to 100% to get the item. To increase this gauge, you simply had to use him/her in your party. However, it was not guaranteed to level up the gauge after a run. It was based on chance that you would level up. In addition, each level up was only 1%. This meant that you had to do an obscene amount of runs to fill it up making the game very tedious and unfun.
The game ran smoothly on my Android with no problems, but it seemed like you had to spent a huge amount of money to get the units you wanted, which I did not like as well. It makes me think that the company is greedy for money instead of caring about their players. However, regarding my capstone game, I would like to implement some of the 2D sprite art style characters into my game in order to create a sense of nostalgia for other people like it did for me.
Game Title: Bleach: Brave Souls
Genre: Third-Person Action Role-Playing Game
Target Demographic: Teen and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
KLab. (2016). Bleach: Brave Souls [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klab.bleach
Bleach: Brave Souls is a third-person action combat game. You can create a team of three characters that you can switch between during the game and use unique abilities to fight your enemies and progress through the map. There are buttons on the right side of the screen that you can press repeatedly to attack. There are also four other skills you can use as well but they all have a cooldown before you can use them again. I was super into this game for awhile before I stopped playing. This is the first game I tried that wasn’t what I was used to. It was not a puzzle or strategy game. The game was in real time and fast paced. You have to constantly be putting in inputs or else the enemies will overwhelm you. It was a nice change of pace and I liked the fact that it was using the Bleach anime IP for the game. I watched the anime when I was a kid so a lot of the characters made me remember them and brought back memories.
I thought the game was very fluid and the controls were responsive. However, over time I got bored because the combat felt the same to me. Many of the characters had the same type of abilities and not enough variety so I stopped having fun overall so I eventually stopped playing. For my capstone game, I feel like adding in a bit of fast action gameplay to mix it up with the strategy style would be a cool feat to make the game more creative.
Game Title: Shadowverse
Genre: Card Game
Target Demographic: Teen and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Cygames. (2016). Shadowverse [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cygames.Shadowverse
Shadowverse is an anime style card game. There are a variety of different classes of cards that you can use to create your own deck of 40. They include: Dragoncraft, Bloodcraft, Swordcraft, Runecraft, Shadowcraft, Havencraft, Forestcraft, and Portalcraft. Each of these classes have a plethora of unique cards with different abilities that can be used in conjunction with one another to beat your opponent. I absolutely love this game and I am still playing it to this day. There are so many different combinations of cards you can play; the possibilities are endless and outsmarting your opponent is a very satisfying feeling. The only thing I did not like was the amount of money you had to spend to create a deck with powerful cards. You have to open packs and there is a small chance to obtain a legendary card. You also needed three copies of the same card in the same deck so you are less likely to brick. Bricking is when you draw cards that cannot help you and you get stuck and lose the game.
The game runs very smoothly on my Android phone as well as the PC version. The art style once again is anime inspired so it has a nice aesthetic touch to it as well. The game comes out with new card about every three months so there is a steady flow of new decks being made with new combinations which keeps the game fresh. For my capstone game, I was also looking into the possibility of making a card game instead of the tower defense game as my second choice. I would love to implement some of the designs of these cards into my game.
Game Title: King’s Raid
Genre: Role-Playing Action Game
Target Demographic: Teen and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Vespa. (2017). King’s Raid [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vespainteractive.KingsRaid
King’s Raid is an action role-playing game that consists of a team ranging from 3 to 8 characters, depending on what type of content you are doing. There are a huge number of characters in this game that you can get for free by just playing the game. They do require a large amount of time to level them up though. I played this game and did enjoy it a lot. The characters all have cool abilities and you play them in real time to defeat the enemies. This means that you have to use your abilities in a strategic and timely manner to defeat your enemies. This type of gameplay was a mix between fast and slow combat which made it very fun for me. Timing and countering your opponent’s moves were key mechanics needed to succeed. However, as I mentioned earlier, the characters needed a lot of time and effort before they can be leveled up completely. This game is reliant on a dupe system where you needed multiple copies of the same equipment so that you can enhance itself. Getting enough dupes to max one weapon was also based on chance. The enhancement had a fairly high chance of failing so sometimes you would have to get dozens of the same item to progress your character. This made me not want to play anymore, especially after failing multiple attempts at enhancing my weapon.
The game ran fine on my Android device without any problems, but it crashed quite often when I tried playing on an emulator. I do think that this game has high potential because I was thinking about coming back to the game. The characters have many different customizable options for their abilities and you can enhance certain aspects of many of them which make the game more unique in my eyes.
Game Title: Yu-gi-oh! Duel Links
Genre: Card Game
Target Demographic: Teen and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Vespa. (2017). King’s Raid [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.konami.duellinks
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links is a card game based on the popular anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! The game uses almost the same exact rules as the real card game that is widely popular today, just a little slimmed down to make the games shorter for the mobile game. As a huge childhood fan of the series and collector of the real cards, I was super into this game. The game was a big source of nostalgia and strategy for me. The card game mechanics are simple but the combinations of cards you can use to take down your opponent can get extremely complex. They also use many of the classic popular cards every kid loves from the TV show so that brings a lot of excitement. The only issue is that you need multiple copies of the same card in your deck to make your deck consistent and less likely to brick. This means that you have to spend real money to open packs and look for dupes. This could easily add up if you need the same copy of one card.
The game runs great on my Android device and on the PC version as well. There is a matchmaking system where the game matches you with an opponent of equal skill based on its elo system. Elo is a number that represents your rank. The higher you go, the harder opponents you will face until you reach the top. For my capstone game, it would be great to have some kind of competitive system in it like this one that helps you play against other strong players.
 Game Title: The Room
Genre: Puzzle
Target Demographic: Everyone
Monetization: Paid App
Reference:
Fireproof Games. (2012). The Room [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.FireproofStudios.TheRoom
The Room is a puzzle game set in a dark room and gritty room. It seems to have almost an endless supply of puzzles leading to more and more puzzles on you reach the end and escape the room. Although I love puzzle games, I found myself not enjoying this one that much. The most obvious reason I can think of is that there wasn’t a reward that I cared about. It seemed like you just solve the puzzle just to get another puzzle to solve. I like the feeling of being rewarded after completing a puzzle so that I felt accomplished. This game only just game me another puzzle. I guess that is okay if you are just doing for the fun of it. I will say, however, that the puzzles were very creative and well-thought out. A lot of the times you would receive items that you would need to solve the next puzzle, but you had to think outside the box to figure out its use.
The mechanics were very simple and it ran smoothly on my Android device. You had simple inputs like zooming in and out, rotating the camera, pressing buttons to activate certain instances like unlocking chests with keys. I just wish I felt more satisfied after solving a puzzle which was lacking for me and made me not want to play anymore.
Game Title: PUBG Mobile
Genre: Action Shooter Battle Royale
Target Demographic: Teen and Up
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Proxima Beta. (2018). PUBG Mobile [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tencent.ig
PUBG Mobile is an action shooter based on its console and PC counterpart version PUBG. It was a huge hit so the owner of the IP, Tencent, decided to release it on mobile as well. The game was one of the first of its kind in the battle royale genre, where a set number of players would all land on the same map together and fight in order to survive and become the last one standing to win the game. The players would have to run around and loot anything they can to defend themselves. I was really into this game when it came out originally on the PC. I tried this game out on mobile and felt kind of letdown though. It was not the gameplay or mechanics since it was pretty much the same as the PC version. It was only because of the touchscreen controls. I know it is different for everyone, but for me, I couldn’t get used to the controls. It just feels too awkward and uncomfortable for me to play a shooter type game on a mobile device. Your fingers are covering basically half the screen already so you can’t see your surroundings clearly. The movement also feels off to me because when I try to go forward, I can feel my thumb slowly slipping further and further up until I have to adjust them again.
The game runs great on my Android phone, which I was actually surprised at, because I felt like it would need a lot more to run smoothly. There are 100 players on that map so I was very impressed that there wasn’t any noticeable lag. I wish I can say more good things about this game, but I just simply could not get used to the controls. I do want to revisit the PC version again though since I had so much fun over there.
Game Title: Genshin Impact
Genre: Role-Playing Adventure Game
Target Demographic: Everyone
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Mihoyo Limited. (2020). Genshin Impact [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.miHoYo.GenshinImpact
Genshin Impact is a massive adventure role-playing game with very vibrant colors and anime style characters. You play a character in a team of four that you can switch between whenever you want at the click of a button. The characters all have an element: pyro, hydro, anemo, geo, and cryo and can use those abilities in many different and creative ways to feat enemies and interact with the world you are in. This game has a huge emphasis on exploration and fighting based on elemental reactions. I was super addicted to this game as well from the sheer size of this beautiful game. Everywhere you look, it looked amazing and surreal. There are a ton of things to find such as new cities, treasure, secret caves, puzzles, and much more. The main thing I did not like was the long time you had to wait for new content. Once you finish exploring the area, you run out of things to do and just end up grinding one dungeon for gear.
This game runs smoothly on both Android and PC, but I realized that it is extremely hard for me to play on a mobile device. The controls feel clunky and awkward to use since you have to be quick with reactions and timing. You also have to constantly switch between your characters to use their abilities in quick succession, while still running around to dodge enemy attacks which is veery difficult to do on mobile inputs. I found myself only logging on the mobile version only when I wanted to spend money on the game since the PC version did not save your credit card information. It was more convenient to just login to mobile since it was linked to Google Pay already.
Game Title: Hearthstone
Genre: Card Game
Target Demographic: Everyone
Monetization: In-Game Purchases
Reference:
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. (2014). Hearthstone [Mobile Game]. Retrieved from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone
Hearthstone is a card game based on its hugely popular MMORPG World of Warcraft. It features cards that represent many of the heroes, villains, and creatures of the Warcraft Universe. The mechanics are fairly simple. Reduce your opponent’s life points to 0 before yours and you win the duel. There are almost an infinite number of ways you can defeat your opponents with the various amounts of cards out there with unique effects. I personally did not like this game that mainly because of the aesthetic. I know that the mechanics are very good and there are many creative and fun cards in this game, but I simply just did not like the art style. I am just as much a visual person as much as a gameplay person. I like to have fun by playing AND seeing. I am bias because I mainly prefer anime style art so anything that isn’t anime style, I tend to be more negative towards it.
This game is very similar to Shadowverse, which is essentially the game, but with a different aesthetic. The kind I love and enjoy. I do not think this is something Hearthstone needs to improve or anything, it’s just having different tastes in art style. I would like to see maybe Blizzard expand on the Hearthstone Universe by incorporating other IPs they own into this game such as Starcraft and Diablo. That would make me instantly want to play this game again with newer themed cards based on those games. They already did this is their MOBA game Heroes of the Storm, where all their game characters are featured in the same game in an all out battle.

Here’s my favorite things abt Kimetsu no Yaiba’s first 2 episodes
Tanjiro being a genuinely kind, hardworking young boy willing to help anyone at any time, absolutely dedicated to adoring his family, but also very flawed when it came to being thrown into an unexpected situation.
Nezuko
the use of super rich color palettes in dark scenes for the sake of building the mood in dramatic scenes, the way they incorporate cg so organically in the traditional 2d scenes, and the music in particular that makes it really feel like a top tier ufotable production
Nezuko’s big eyes
The voice cast! My wig flew right off my head hearing Sakurai as yet another inexpressive asshole with long hair and a sword. It was also really fun to hear Midorikawa Hikaru in a role that isn’t a chaotic good young man! I loved it a lot
Nezuko’s lil fangs?
I am iN LOVE with the art style of this anime, it’s both endearing and cute while being like, strong and dynamic? It’s youthful, but not childish.
Nezuko’s character design is very representative of the general feeling of the anime, incorporating a very innocent face, large, round eyes and a big forehead and long hair with the sinister element of the bite in her mouth. When she goes full demon you really appreciate how the childish features both contrast and complement her demonic features like the teeth and claws and how her color palette can switch from sweet and cute to sinister just by giivng her a few more expression lines.
Nezkuko when she digs herself a little hole
There’s electric light in the town! it gives some insight into the time period! it feels more real because it feels more “modern” than your usual traditional japanese story. Ginyu’s uniform with the buttoned jacket also speaks a lot about the context: it has that feeling of Japan entering into the modern era that adds a twist to a story centered around traditional folklore. You get a feel of people who live far enough from civilization to still retain rural customs and traditions, but are exposed to modern technology and I hope it gets talked about!
Nezuko when she crawls into her little basket IM fucking feral im screaming I’m crying she’s PRECIOUS she’s adorable she’s SO FUCKING TALENTED I LOVE MY LITTLE DEMON DAUGHTER
