Noc na Karlštejně/A Night at Karlstein (1974) (Another Czech movie, or actually a musical that I know all the songs to, seen an adaptation in theatre and it was lit as fuck)

As 2020 is nearing, it’s time to see what 2019 has brought us when it comes to gay representation in tv shows and movies. Below ‘read more’, there’s a whole list of tv shows/ships/movies (with pictures and basic description) which include/are about gay (used as an umbrella term) men and couples (so basically have gay storylines and at least one gay person is a main character of the show/movie).

Since I’m a gay man, I keep up mostly with mlm, if I included wlw as well, I don’t think the list would be complete with my lack of knowledge, so sorry about that. I’m pretty sure there are more competent people who can do that instead of me.

TV SHOWS

TV SHOWS WITH TITULAR/CENTRAL GAY CHARACTERS/SHIPS

The Other Two: the funniest most-relatable show centered around three siblings – one of them is gay (left). A must-watch for sure. He’s pretty much the hugest part of the show, there are some love storyline (...and they were roomates), some self-loving moments and iconic lines. Just watch it, you won’t regret it.

Sex Education: show about two best friends, one of them (right) is gay. His name is Eric and he gets involved with his enemy Adam (left). Amazing show.

Special: show about a gay man Ryan (right) with mild cerebral palsy, who wants to live his life as an independent person to the fullest. Easy and short show to watch.

Druck (German SKAM Remake): if you don’t know SKAM, it’s pretty much a show where each season is devoted to one character. Third season of German SKAM aired this year and it was revolved around a gay guy (left). For the first time in SKAM history, the main character’s love interest is a trans guy (right).

Skam France (French SKAM Remake): the French version of SKAM had a gay season this year as well. 

WTFock (Belgian SKAM Remake): Belgium has a season focused on the main gay character this year as well.

El corazón nunca se equivoca: I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of Aristemo from ‘Mi marido tiene más familia’. Well, they’d already aired the first season of the new spin-off centered around their lives in college (I think).

Merlí: Sapere Aude: Bruno (left) and Pol (right) fans, it’s time to make some noise. Brunol is coming back because Pol is getting a spin-off which will be taking place in university. Bruno will be in it as well. First episode airs on 5th of December this year.

Pose: second season of Ryan Murphy’s popular show with main transgender and gay characters has aired this year.

The Politician: another show from Ryan Murphy was created. The main protagonist of the show (right) is played by Ben Platt and he’s gay. The show contains many LGBT+ main characters.

Tales of the City: the revival of the Tales of the City sequence of miniseries aired this year. The show includes many LGBT+ storylines.

The L Word: Generation Q: the revival of The L Word show will air on 8th of December this year. The show is mainly about lesbians, but based on trailer, there will be a gay couple included as well.

Years and Years: very futuristic show with a political message. Includes both mlm and wlw as main characters.

The Red Line: the plot of this show involves a white cop in Chicago who mistakenly shoots and kills a black doctor named Harrison. Harrison had a husband (left) and daughter (right). The show deals with the consequences of the event.

Now Apocalypse: all I’m gonna say is that Beck from Victorious got to make out with Scott from Teen Wolf, Matty from Awkward and Jake from Glee. The show was renewed for second season and later this statement was taken back and it got cancelled – which I guess says enough about the show.

This Close: the show is about two best friends who are deaf. One of them (left) is gay and has a storyline and spicy scenes with the guy on the right and some other guys as well. 

Schitt’s Creek: David (right) and Patrick (left) aka the cutest softest couple of all time. The last season of the show will air next air. Watch the show if you wanna laugh and watch the healthiest gay couple on tv. They also got engaged this year, which was beautiful.

NEW TV SHOWS (1 SEASON) WITH MAIN GAY CHARACTERS/SHIPS

Daybreak: both main characters and basically on different sides of the battles. Who wouldn’t want to watch enemies being in love Romeo & Juliet style.

El Juego de las Llaves (The Game of Keys): very interesting and fun show to follow, the one on the right is the main character. He’s closeted, has a girlfriend and gradually realizes there’s something else out there. Nice kissing scenes, plus one very spicy scene. Doesn’t hurt that the guy on the left he will be involved with looks like a dollar store Chris Evans if you squint hard enough.

Five Bedrooms: 5 strangers moves in. The guy in the middle is gay. His mom is a very traditional Indian woman who just wants grandchildren. The whole show is heart-warming and sad at times. The guy gets fair share of screentime and some love interests including a cop from the neighbourhood.

Made In Heaven: Indian show that follows the lives of Tara and Karan (left), two wedding planners in Delhi running an agency named Made in Heaven. Karan is gay. Very progressive show with spicy gay scenes.

What/If: haven’t seen the show yet but friends said these two have a nice storyline in the show. Threesome included.

Bonding: show about two best friends Pete (left) and Tiff (right). Pete is gay. They basically... do freaky shit for work... umm. Just watch trailer or something.

Osmosis: I have no idea what the show is about but the guy on the left is set to betrying to find a soulmate or something. I think I remember seeing some spicy scenes.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists: basically some gay romance with the guy on the right and someone else. The one on the left dies the first episode so I did not even bother after that. But you can be the judge of it.

Doom Patrol: Larry (left) is a superhero, kinda. There’s something haunting his past, though. Something that involves being gay.

The Umbrella Academy: Klaus (left) my favorite character. He’s kind of a hero along with his other siblings. There’s a deep gay storyling along the way.

Weird City: anyways... all I’m gonna say is that Dylan O’Brien played a gay for one episode in a show. Wish there wasn’t this huge ugly age difference.

Roswell, New Mexico: cowboys, aliens, bisexuality, homosexuality and all that. Didn’t really see the show but there’s a lot of content with these two.

Good Trouble: never saw the sow but the guy on the picture is a main bisexual characters. There are some mlm scenes.

The Society: Grizz (right) and Sam (left) literally the highlight of the show. Just watch it, it is worth to see it for both of them. Sam is also deaf. The show is basically about a bunch of teenagers getting stuck in a town with no one else in or around.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: The High School Musical tv show has just started airing on Disney+. Carlos (left) is confirmed to be gay and to be getting a nice development this season which will probably involve Seb (right) as well.

The Heights: Australian tv show. Sully (left) is gay. Got a thing for Ash (right) at the start. Then things were messy. Then they suddenly kissed. And the things are messy again.

El Club (The Club): very interesting show. The gave these two really (like REALLY) spicy scenes. Some romantic stuff. But there’s really not much depth in my option. Check and see.

Volevo fare la rockstar: didn’t see it but it’s an Italian show and there’s a romantic storyline between these two.

No Good Nick: Jeremy (right) came out this year on this sitcom. Nice and very weid sitcom. Unfortunately it was cancelled, but the way they handled his gay storyline was rather nice.

World on Fire: follows lives of ordinary people from Britain, Poland, France, Germany and the USA during World War II. Two of them are gay. And yeah one of those two is Will from sense8.

TV SHOWS (1 SEASON+) WITH MAIN GAY CHARACTERS/SHIPS 

Andi Mack: the show that made history. Andi Mack is a Disney Channel show and for the first time in Disney Channel history, Cyrus (right) came out using the word ‘gay’ and made it official with the recurring character TJ (left) this year. The two-season slow-burn was really worth it.

Shadowhunters: Malec got married this year. Yay.

Grey’s Anatomy: Levi and Nico still going strong.

La Casa de las Flores (The House of Flowers): despite the first season making it seem like it was the end for Diego and Julián, that’s not the case. In season 2, they’re stronger than ever, the scenes are spicier than ever and the show is gayer than ever.

Baby: first season was mostly focused on Fabio (face on right) realizing he’s gay. The second season has shockingly showed us that Brando (face on left) is gay as well. Very toxic ship so if you enjoy Gallavich this is probably for you.

Élite: Omar and Ander continuing their journey.

Shameless: Ian (up) and Mickey (down) came back to Shameless season 10 as main characters. About time.

Station 19: new love interest (left, a deaf character portrayed by a deaf actor) was introduced for Travis (right) in the season 2 finale. Let’s see what happens in season 3, which airs in 2020.

Ackley Bridge: they pretty much baited us with Cory (left) and Naveed (right) this season. They stayed just friends, but Naveed found a love interest, so that’s nice.

Find Me In Paris: Never saw the show, but Jeff (on the picture) is gay and his love interest Isaac gets introduced in second season that aired this year.

13 Reasons Why: Tony and Caleb going strong. It was also revealed that Monty (right) is a closeted gay and had a storyline with Winston (left). There’s probably more to come with them in next season. 

Insatiable: unfortunately they didn’t serve much Bob (right) & Bob this year. But they introduced detective Rudy (left) and there were some scenes and twists and turns. Whatever.

Riverdale: I don’t care. Kevin (left) is still there. There are some gay charcters based on wiki, but yeah. Crumbs, I bet. Whatever.

Charité: second season (which has the two main gay characters) takes place in Berlin in 1943. You don’t need to watch the first season at all, to understand the second one with them, it’s basically a stand-alone.

Animal Kingdom: Deran and Adrian’s story coming to an end?

The Magicians: Well, they killed off the central bi character Quentin (on the picture), so fuck them. 

How to Get Away With Murder: Connor (left) and Oliver (right) still there.

Dear White People: haven’t seen it, but Lionel (on the picture) is still there and he’s gay.

Zoe Valentine: there’s this web series and these two have a storyline in second season that aired this year.

SOAP OPERAS AND TELENOVELAS

Sturm der Liebe: Boris (left) and Tobias (right) are married and lived happily ever after. Really cute and sometimes dramatic storyline overall. Check it out.

Malhação: Vidas Brasileiras: Santiago (left) and Michael (right) had a gay storyline but the show ended this year.

Malhação: Toda Forma de Amar: Guga (right) and Serginho (left) have a gay storyline in the show.

Eastenders: Ben (left) and Callum’s (right) storyline has begun this year.

Neighbours: David (right) and Aaron (left) aka husbands still in the soap.

REALITY SHOWS

Queer Eye: five gay guys helping others. Season 3, 4 and a special have aired this year.

Are You the One?: for the first time in the show’s history, season 8 of this dating reality show had an all-sexually fluid cast this year. Which means mlm and wlw and anything else. Really fun show.

MOVIES

Benjamin: don’t even remember what the movie was about but I rec because it was cute and I mean hello Merlin.

Boy Erased: homosexuality and religion. Has a Troye Sivan in it. Very decent movie.

And Then We Danced: my favorite gay movie of this year. All the things they had to do to be able to film this in homophobic Georgia (the country)... just wow. It’s a must-watch.

Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island?: didn’t know what to expect from this movie. It is based on a play and it shows. Watch and be the judge of it. The acting was really highlight of the movie.

This Is Not Berlin: hasn’t seen it yet since it was just officially released. But it is included in an LGBT+ section so... hopefully they didn’ lie.

Rocketman: movie about Elton John with Taron Egerton and Richard Madden... I mean, phew.

Un Rubio (The Blonde One): gonna watch this, apparently it’s amazing based on what some of my mutuals have said.

The Death and Life of John F. Donovan: Jon Snow being gay and kissing Chris Zylka. Made by Xavier Dolan. A literal tripple threat. Genuinely enjoyed the movie and the soundtrack.

Ranchlands: haven’t seen this but my friend said it’s amazing.

Steam Room Stories: this movie was something... Eating Out levels of ‘I-’ but without all the sex. I guess watch this if you are bored.

Posledice (Consequences): very spicy and intriguing movie. Slovenia snapped with this one.

Papi Chulo: didn’t like this movie and the concept of it but... you can check out and see for yourself.

Dolor y gloria (Pain and Glory): Antonio Banderas kissing a man. Hopefully it really is a gay-related movie because I haven’t seen it yet.

Die Stropers (The Harvesters): brilliant cinematography but I expected much more from the movie.

Giant Little Ones: what happens when you’re into your best friend’s sister but the best friend gives you a BJ. Well... watch and see.

Kanarie (Canary): a war musical about a small town boy who gets chosen to serve his compulsory two year military training in the South African Defence Force Choir and Concert. Loved the involvement of the Boy George music, aesthetic and story. One of my favorites this year. 

Luciérnagas (Fireflies): haven’t seen it yet but the description says that the main gay character (right) “flees from persecution in Iran and ends up living in the tropical town of Veracruz.”

El Angel: haven’t seen it but apparently there are some implications it was lowkey gay... so yeah.

Dear Ex: from wiki “San Lian was devastated when she discovered her late ex-husband left his insurance payout to his male partner Ah Jie. She decided to bring her son to fight for their rights, but her son instead chose to stand on the other person's side.” Will watch this soon, sounds interesting.

Sauvage: one of the best gay movies this year. Don’t know how to describe it so let me copy paste the description “ Léo is a sex worker who uses drugs whilst longing for love.”

Sócrates: haven’t seen it yet as it was just released.

Marilyn: story about a farm worker who discovers his sexuality in a hostile environment. Didn’t see it since someone has told me there are some scenes that are really HARD to stomach and I ain’t about that life.

Les Crevettes pailletées (The Shiny Shrimps): the movie is about an Olympic swimming champion who makes a homophobic comment in a television interview, and is disciplined by the national swim team with the responsibility of coaching a gay water polo team who aspire to compete in the Gay Games. Sounds and looks like an amazing comedy and can’t wait to watch it when I will be able to.

Fin de siglo (End of the Century): it’s not out yet as far as I know, but it’s about two men who meet in Barcelona and realize they have met already 20 years ago.

Matthias et Maxime: another excellence by Xavier Dolan. Story about life-long friends who question their sexual identities after they kiss. Looks amazing and I can’t wait for it to get released finally.

The Goldfinch: not a gay movie, but I’ve seen many people considering it as LGBT+ cinema because of the book and you know what, they kissed after all so you can perceive it beyond friendship if you want. If not, then just skip it. I feel like it is worth mentioning it tho.

Mapplethorpe: movie is about the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Didn’t see it but Doctor Who plays him so there’s that.

UPCOMING

TV SHOWS

9-1-1: Lone Star: The spin-off of a popular show 9-1-1 by Ryan Murphy is premiering 19th of January 2020. It’s confirmed that the main character TK (a firefighter, left) will be romantically involved with the main character Carlos (a police officer, right). The show will also have a main trans man.

Love, Simon: The Series: A Disney+ Love, Simon spin-off is on its way and will premiere in 2020. The series will follow Victor (right) and his coming-out story at the same high school where Love, Simon took place. Didn’t find a photo with his love interest. The guy on the left will most likely be his enemy.

Dead Doll's Eyes: Bruce Campbell Talks New Evil Dead and Calls Out Martin Scorsese’s Bulls—t.

Bruce Campbell burrowed his way into our hearts as a dashing B-movie icon with roles in a litany of cult classics, from Evil Dead to Bubba Ho-Tep.

After returning to his roots to play Ash Williams for three seasons of delightfully gratuitous gore in Ash vs Evil Dead, Campbell put away his chainsaw for good when Starz cancelled the series in 2018. However, much to fans’ delight, Evil Dead trilogy director and Ash vs Evil Dead producer Sam Raimi recently announced a forthcoming entry to the franchise with Campbell attached as a producer. Even better: although Ash won’t return to fight Deadites in live action, Campbell will lend his voice to an upcoming Evil Dead video game.

To accompany the rerelease of his memoir Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor — now with an added “Requiem for Ash” chapter — Campbell is dropping by the Alamo City next week for a screening of Army of Darkness and audience Q&A. He promises it’ll be a good time — “There’s lots of stories about the making of that ridiculous movie.”

We caught up with Campbell over the phone, and he shared his thoughts on retiring Ash, teased some upcoming projects and even offered a few choice words for Martin Scorsese.

After Ash vs Evil Dead was cancelled you decided to hang up the character and retire him.

I did, didn’t I?

Unlike other actors who retire their characters, it’s not so much that you���re sick of Ash Williams, but that the demands of filming such a special effects-heavy series led you to reach something you’ve called “The Latex Point.” Could you expand on the on-set demands of Ash vs Evil Dead and why they’re so taxing?

Well, my wife sort of put a finger on it — as she so often does. She came into the trailer one day the last season of shooting, and I’m sitting there miserable because I had to put down plastic sheeting everywhere I went. I’d stick to everything because I was always covered with blood.

She goes, “I know what your problem is — you got Poopy Diaper Syndrome.”

I’m like, “What’re you talking about?”

“You’re like a 3-year-old or a 2-year-old sitting in a poopy diaper, and you can’t get out of your poopy diaper. No one will help you change your poopy diaper.”

So really, it’s that. It’s a series of lying face down in cellars. And it occurred to me multiple times. I’d be lying there literally face down, waiting for a shot, covered in blood in a dark cellar on the dirt, and I’m like, “Is this where I belong?” And the answer was “yes” for a long time, but it’s not a permanent place where you wanna be. Not as a 60-year-old man.

I wanted to avoid that Star Wars crap, where they’re holding these actors up with baling wire and cotton balls, you know what I mean? Feeding them their lines of dialogue through earbuds. I couldn’t do that. I could still pull the character off, so I wanted to finish while I could still do it.

And not have it kind of become…

Uh, sad. We don’t want sadness.

But you’re not leaving Evil Dead. You’re attached as a producer to a new movie, and it’s going to bring new blood into the franchise, including a director hand-picked by Sam Raimi. How does it feel to be able to step back, but still help usher in this new era?

Well, fantastic. Because, look, we can work with these directors. We can support them in the ways that we’ve always wanted to be supported. We can punish them in the ways that we should have been punished. We can hire actors that are good and well behaved, because I know what to look for. And when we get an actor, we can tell them how to best use their time and not party. We’ve learned a lot over the years, so we can share and torment these directors into making a good movie. There’s definitely a place for us. We’ll be there behind the scenes pulling the strings on these little monkeys.

How does it compare so far to the development process for Fede Álvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead? Or is it too early to say?

It’s too early, and every director’s different. Fede was very specific. I’d never worked with Fede, so I wanted to make sure he could work with actors. I sat in for only one day during auditions, and I could see how he would see a take, work with the actors, and the second take was better. After I saw two or three of those, I was like, OK — I’m outta here. This guy knows how to get a better take out of an actor. Done. That’s a huge accomplishment. And he was already very astute with special effects.

What you have to do is find out what the director’s strength is and encourage that, and find out what their weaknesses are and either fix that or discourage that. Some directors are great with actors but they suck at special effects, some are great at special effects but they don’t know how to talk to actors. It’s a really delicate dance. The modern movie is very delicate, because the modern movie has way more special effects now.

In Captain Marvel, even the cat was CGI most of the time he was onscreen.

Lemme tell ya, I’m gonna make a bold statement here.

The Irishman has more digital effects than the most recent Marvel movie, but you just don’t notice. Which why I call B.S. on Marty Scorsese calling out the Marvel movies. It’s like, bullshit! You just used more digital effects than a Marvel movie, and you’re telling me that’s cinema but the other one isn’t?

But the point is, I don’t buy it. I mean, I can’t wait to watch that movie, because I’m gonna be driven insane by Robert DeNiro at 42, Robert DeNiro at 47, Robert DeNiro at 31. It’s just gonna drive me insane, because I’m gonna look at it and I’m gonna be looking at dead doll’s eyes and, you know, they’re gonna do a good job, but they’re all gonna look like sharks.

Now that you’re no longer beholden to the intense schedule of TV production, are there any projects that you’re able to look at that weren’t an option before?

Well, one of two things can happen. I finally told my agent, “OK,” because I had to pass on some things in the last couple years that were decent projects, because I had a bunch of other random stuff going. If you open up your schedule, you can allow for stuff like that. All of 2020 is currently completely open. I have zero bookings for the first time in probably 15 years. I like booking my year — I like knowing what’s going on — but, in this case I’m gonna leave work open to fall off the truck from my agency.

But I also have a TV project that I’m pushing and a feature film project. I will go back under the TV knife under the right conditions, and I have a project that I would do that for. “Under the knife” meaning to sign a contract.

The beauty of it is with these limited series now, no one has to commit to shit these days. One season, two seasons, three seasons, you know. So, we’ll see what happens. I just wrote a feature film — a political satire — and I wanna make that next, so I’m in the process of shopping it. I’m hat in hand right now.

You’ve been in the director’s chair, both for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess as well as your horror comedy My Name is Bruce. Would you be interested in directing again, possibly for the movie you just wrote?

All the projects that I’m currently gonna be involved with now, moving forward, I’ll be directing in some way. Raising money for low budget movies — I have as much experience as anybody now, so there’s no reason to look for anybody else. I’ll just direct myself.

It’s time for the new sheriff to come into town.

Another thing that makes Evil Dead so compelling is the long-running team behind it. Even if it’s not Evil Dead, would you be down to act in future projects with Sam and Ted Raimi, or your Ash vs Evil Dead costars?

Well, I would be happy to work with any of them again, but I just can’t say. Sam, who knows? Sam’s off making these 10-minute shorts. I forget the name of the company, but everyone’s making shorts now, so go figure.

Kind of like YouTube — getting on that train?

Yeah, I don’t know. It’s all new to me. I’m sticking with the true-blue formats for now.

If you had the opportunity to reprise any other characters that you’ve played previously, like fan favorite Brisco County, Jr., would you be interested? Or do you want to focus on all new material and characters?

New stuff is always my favorite, but I would definitely do Brisco Rides Again, and I would definitely do more Burn Notice. We’re sort of circling the building now with Burn Notice. Maybe it’s time to save the world again. The world needs us.

You recently updated your memoir Hail to the Chin with a new “Requiem for Ash,” and are making appearances tied to the book’s rerelease. How do you integrate tours and press appearances without blowing out your schedule, and how do they differ from press junkets you do for film and TV?

The beauty of working with a company is when it’s time to do press, they’ve really got it down. I saved a bunch of my itineraries from Ash vs Evil Dead just because of how ridiculous they were, so I can look back and show my grandchildren “this was a press day in New York City.” So, you really got the support. The only difference is when you do low budget stuff, or even books, you’re kind of on your own, and it’s way more down-home. It’s Twitter, it’s Facebook, it’s Facebook ads or whatever. It’s no national TV — nothin’. It’s a whole different ball game.

You know, I’m a one-man band. I’ll miss a few interviews because I forgot or didn’t put it in my schedule or whatever. Someone’ll call, I’ll go, “What do you want?” They’re like, “We have a phoner.” I go, “Really? Ok, great.” This one I happened to remember. We do what we can.

Nilo Blues Pays Homage to Cult Anime Film Akira in “Akira Harakiri” [Premiere + Q&A]

The city of Toronto never ceases to amaze us. What can arguably be considered the epicenter for a new wave of hip-hop, Toronto has become notorious for generating underground sensation after sensation. Through their cultivation of hypnotic and innovative soundscapes, to their impeccable flows and lyricism, Toronto has solidified an extensive roster of industry frontrunners, and Nilo Blues is proving to be the newest addition to the team.

Despite being a self-proclaimed poster child for Generation Z, the 21-year-old is anything but ordinary. Growing up in the Toronto art scene, Blues encompasses what it means to be a multi-hyphenate creative, utilizing his talents as a singer, rapper, dancer, and producer to tell stories that grapple with his Asian identity within the context of western society. 

His debut single, “No Risk Involved,” is an intrepid statement on Asian cultural identity and showcases how Blues’ struggle to live and create beyond rigid stereotypes has ultimately fueled him to pave his own way, in music and life. His nuanced and complex approach to the modern trap soundscape mirrors that of his own evolution and understanding of his own personal identity. Woven within his uncompromisingly honest storytelling and conviction lies the infectious hooks, melodic arrangements, and unsparing production of a true, multi-hyphenate artist. And despite “No Risk Involved” being the official introduction to his discography, we’re here to tell you that it’s just the tip of the iceberg for Blues.

As we patiently await his debut EP, set to release this summer, Blues gives us a peek at what’s to come with his most recent drop, “Akira Harakiri.” Explosive and audacious, this track has the power to cause havoc to the silencers of a corrupted system. Compiled within roaring trap-laden beats and terse hip-hop rhythms, Blues’ adroit vocals and dynamic fluidity convey a sense of fervor, all while challenging the status quo of Asian representation within American culture. 

“Akira Harakiri” pays homage to the anime that Blues grew up with, most notably the raw tenacity of Akira and the thriving energy of Dragonball Z, which influenced its sonic foundation and cinematic execution. In an effort to gain a more comprehensive understanding of his artistry, we spoke with Blues about his position in the current Toronto-trap soundscape and what motivates him to create breakout tracks like “No Risk Involved” and “Akira Harakiri.”    

Ones To Watch: It seems like dancing used to be a significant part of your life before music. What sparked your transition?

Nilo Blues: Growing up I was surrounded by music, whether it be at home or in the dance studio. I always had this natural appreciation for music grow in me because of all the different sounds I was surrounded by. I remember having 10-hour dance rehearsal days and then coming home to record photo booth videos of me and my best friend spitting melodies and lyrics over beats we found. I started producing at 16 when I discovered the iMaschine app for iPhone. I would spend hours trying to cook up beats until one day I decided to learn Ableton Live. My mentor cracked it on my laptop and started showing me the ropes, instantly I was hooked. My musical journey honestly started out from me just wanting to make music I could dance to. I owe a lot of myself to dance. 100%.

Has being a dancer influenced your creative process at all?

Dance has influenced me creatively in many different aspects of the process. Growing up as a dancer, you immediately instill a high level of discipline and work ethic as a young child. We were training like athletes and expressing like actors. It shaped the way I hear music (especially my own), it developed my approach on execution and staying on my P’s and Q’s, and it allows me to perform and add a visual component to the sonics. I grew up admiring Michael Jackson, James Brown, JT, Usher and now Bruno Mars. They all hold all aspects of their art to such a high standard. I’m trying to set that exact same standard and quality, through my own vernacular.

Growing up in what can be considered as the epicenter of Canadian hip-hop, do you think Toronto, and the artists that have put it on the map, have influenced your sound at all?

I started learning how to make music right when the 2015-2016 Toronto rap boom happened, so definitely. I feel like Toronto artists collectively do such an amazing job at emulating the vibe of Toronto. At a time where Toronto was only synonymous with Drake (the GOAT), The Weeknd, and PND, Toronto artists really stepped up to the plate and let the world hear the type of shit we’re on. It's super inspiring, and I just want to keep pushing the envelope. I’m trying to land where no one has before, and make my mark in everything I set my mind to. I’m hungry and I want to get great shit done. I thank Toronto and the lively music scene in the city for sparking that.

Your first single “No Risk Involved” highlights the misrepresentation of Asian identity in mainstream culture. Why was it so important for you to create your own narrative and debunk westernized versions of Asian culture and identity?

My family was the main inspiration for wanting to evoke that conversation. Western media loves to exploit the great ideas from different cultures without ever giving credit to the cultures that cultivated them to begin with. They perpetuate false narratives and generalize us in order to keep control. I’ve seen what my family has gone through in order to even be here. My mom is Filipino, and my dad is Viet-Chin, so I’ve had my fair share of perspectives at a young age. One thing I can guarantee is that Asians aren’t as one-dimensional as the media portrays us to be. It’s about genuinely telling our stories, and being able to control the narrative in the world we share with the culture.

How was it filming the “No Risk Involved” video? Did you have a vision for how you wanted it to look?

It was amazing. I definitely felt back in my element while performing on-screen. The positive energy and hard work by everyone on set was the difference-maker. I feel like that energy shines through the video. I’m so grateful to have had such an amazing cast and crew, they fucking killed it. As for the concept, NRI was one of the very first concepts I started developing with my team. Had my first meeting with Angelica Milash, the director of the video, and everything clicked. The inspiration was drawn from aesthetics you’d see in legendary Hong Kong movies like Young & Dangerous. We also based the female looks on different characters from movies that included Asian characters with exaggerated Asian female stereotypes.

You once tweeted “I love good music but when an artist can pull off a great visual it tells you a lot about that artist.” Do you think it’s important for artists to be active creative directors in the videos they come out with?

Personally, I love dipping my fingers in every pot when it comes to my creative direction. I believe it takes a strong team in order to create beautiful shit, and, as the artist, I want to lead the team to victory. If one of us wins, we all win. Being active as a leader is what’s important. Sharing ideas, and building with the people around you. That’s how the best ideas shine through. You just gotta be a leader with this shit. Take control of your vision and work together to execute. If you aren’t paying attention to every aspect of your craft, you’re only going to see one perspective. At the end of the day, no one will execute your own ideas better than yourself. We all have that capability.

Your newest single “Akira Harakiri” is inspired by the 1988 cult cyberpunk film Akira. How did this iconic anime influence your lyrical and production process?

I wanted the essence of the track to emulate the same essence of the movie. The production was what sparked the idea. Colin Munroe was working on the beat while we bounced ideas around and I instantly felt the beat belonged in an anime. Akira was an automatic click. This song is supposed to feel like a song The Capsules gang would bump around Neo-Tokyo. I loved the dynamic between Kaneda and Tetsuo in the film, and wanted to combine the charisma and poise of Kaneda with the maniacal energy of Tetsuo. That’s also something I want to tap into on the visual component as well. This song is an homage to a visual masterpiece, as well as an iconic moment in film and culture.

What are some of your favorite anime films?

I grew up watching anime on TV like Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Digimon. As I grew older, I wasn’t exposed to as much as before, but I rediscovered my love for it in high school when I binge-watched Death Note twice in succession. Now I’m trying to watch as much as possible. I feel like I have so much to catch up on lol.

What are some of your goals for 2020? Both as an artist and as a human being?

I want to work on killing the urge of having a cigarette or vaping again. I quit at the end of 2019, and started working out four times a day with my trainer. I’m trying to stay consistent in doing my laundry but that shit fucking sucks. I'm trying to meditate more, as I’ve recently picked up on transcendental meditation and want to keep consistent. Other than that I wanna keep dropping cool shit and repping what I know best. I wanna keep pushing myself to my limits and keep evolving. I hope people find strength in my music and I want to evoke new thought and conversation.

What can we expect to hear more of in your future projects?

More genuine energy. You’ll definitely be able to feel exactly how I felt when creating the music, from the growing pains to the gratitude. More singing too. You’ll be able to identify the spectrum of my sound, and how dynamic it is.

Who are your Ones to Watch?

I’ve been on my hip-hop shit as of late, so I’ve been bumping a lot of Kaash Paige, Fivio Foreign, The Kid LAROI and shit. Deb Never is an artist that I've been wanting to work with personally. Out of Toronto, definitely keep your eye out for Stefani Kimber. One of the most talented artists I’ve ever heard and a great human being. She’s definitely one of my top Ones to Watch artists.

Sheridan (Svali) is an intern at CARE. As I stated I was at CARE a few years ago and met ‘Svali’. My experience at CARE was not good. In hindsight what occurred although painful and confusing at the time has ended up being something I am grateful for now.

Since Sheridan (Svali) is at CARE I thought I’d share with you what CARE is and a brief overview of them.  Then the information I’ve found out recently and why what happened in the past is now something that I think was a higher power intervening on my behalf to get me away from them.

How can a leader of a religious organization support, promote, and agree with so much hatred for their fellow human? 

That brings me to Sheridan (Svali). CARE is the perfect place for her. Remember Sheridan talks about how racist the Illuminati is, CARE is a perfect religious cover for that racism.

Q: Overall, would you say the Illuminati are racist? I am asking this because their agenda seems to be very white supremist throughout history.

The Illuminati are racist, and have a very “Aryan” outlook. They believe strongly in the rule of the “pure” and “intelligent” by their definitions, and in their ceremonies, there will occasionally be minorities killed in ceremonies. They are trying to breed a “genetically superior” race to rule, with their children and descendants. They are also followers of Plato’s Republic, and believe that they will be the ones to usher in this “Utopian” rule with the NWO in their opinion. In their Utopia, the intelligentsia will rule, and the sheep like masses will follow their leaders (that is their view of the world; that the occult leaders are “enlightened’ and intelligent, while the average person is a “sheep” to be led by the nose). LINK

We’re into another month and this one will be focused on cleaning up after the chaos of January. Remember that chaos is the result of dis-integration of old paradigms and we’re seeing a lot of that now. The energy focus for February is connection and the other 5D energies of collaboration, community, and creativity (which is also the theme of 2019). This can be a great month if we don’t get lost in confusion, self doubt, and forgetting that we are masters of our own universe and energetically sovereign.

February’s new moon is another one in the series that began in November 2018 where all of the new moons are at 0 degrees of their sign, which continues through April. The number zero (0) does not mean nothing, it is pure potential and means no-thing, energy waiting for an intention to bring it to form, energy looking for an energy container to fill. So see each new moon period until May as being pure potential, starting fresh and new. This new moon is in the sign of Aquarius, ruling community, friends, social groups, and connections.

Does that remind you of what’s going on in the world now? Think of how many connections we make via the internet that has created an interconnected global community. Think about the Q movement (whether you follow it or not) and the strong global community of an estimated 500 million or more dedicated, loyal, and committed followers it has. This is not a political statement, it’s an example of 5D energy at work which is all about community, connections, and expanding our awareness of ourselves as the human family on a global and universal level.

We also have a full moon at 15 Virgo on February 19 and this one brings Chiron, the wounded healer, into focus again. Chiron has been a huge factor in all of the work we have been doing for the past two years as its presence in Pisces brings up the old, deep, and very traumatic soul wounding we have suffered from for many lifetimes. These are being brought to our awareness and attention now because we say we want to ascend and these old soul wounds keep us grounded in their energy of pain and trauma. This is especially true this month as we have Chiron at the final degree of Pisces which Mercury will highlight later this month as it approaches this degree to begin its retrograde in March.

Yes we have a Mercury retrograde in March and its shadow begins on February 21 at the degree of the March 6 new moon. Prepare for an extra strong dose of healing potential all month and into March. I’ve described the special relationship between Chiron and Mercury, Virgo and Pisces before so I won’t elaborate here. Just know that with this month’s emphasis on relationships and love, with Valentine’s Day, having all of this Chiron energy bringing up soul wounds may be a bit difficult but it’s a reminder to close out these old karmic relationship and love energy cycles that have been so painful and unfulfilling so we can welcome new ones.

Let’s talk about Valentine’s Day, a day which some of you may look forward to, some may ignore entirely, and others dread it because it reminds them of how long it has been since they have had a relationship, or it is a reminder of every bad, failed, tough, and terrible relationship they have ever had.

Instead of being sad, mad, depressed, or angry this Valentine’s Day, do something nice for yourself. Treat yourself to a spa day, do something you enjoy, buy yourself some flowers, send yourself a beautiful card with a note about how wonderful and valuable you are, or treat yourself to a lovely lunch or dinner at your favorite restaurant.

Do you know that the word ‘restaurant’ is from a French word which means ‘to restore or revive’?

Why wait until someone comes into your life to do these things for you? Show yourself some love this month and then enjoy yourself while you’re doing it. And who knows, by going out and doing something nice you just may meet someone.

Miracle energy is high this month, so be prepared to use it.

This month we get a test of our energetic sovereignty and have the opportunity to explore our energetic maturity, which can be a lesson in how we move on from the past.

Do we get stuck in the energy of the past or are we going to move forward into the future?

Does the past define us in the present moment or is it just a blip on the radar of our life that serves as a reminder of where we have been that we do not want to visit again?

Or it’s about the lessons we learned that we’re going to use as a foundation to create stronger energy boundaries, more powerful intentions, and a greater focus on our self esteem, which we must have to become more self-loving.

We can be a drop looking for an ocean or the vast ocean itself.

Remember we cannot have someone in our life who loves us more than we love ourselves. This month’s focus on love and relationship can start with the relationship we have with ourselves, it is our most important one. January may have created a mess but in February we have the tools to clean it up and restore ourselves to our divine congruence that brings peace, joy, love, prosperity and most of all, harmony.

Time to get out the mop, bucket, broom, and dustpan and get to work. Have a wonderful month.

PA FOUNDATION - PA Student Awardee Shares Their Scholarship Experience

In April, I applied for the PA Foundation Scholarship along with two other friends during our Psychiatry rotation. Fingers crossed, we all submitted our best shots, hoping that one of us would receive a coveted award from the PA Foundation up to $2,000. As we all know, a Master's in Physician Assistant Studies is a pretty hefty financial endeavor and any amount helps towards reducing the debt burden.

Last week we heard back from the award committee and we were SO EXCITED to find out that one of us had received the award! ASD - the brightest student in our year no competition and a truly beautiful soul to boot! - was one of 37 students who was awarded a PA Foundation scholarship (out of 630 applicants!). They have graciously agreed to share an excerpt from their "What do you hope to do as a PA" essay! Additionally, ASD answers some questions about the application process and how they felt after receiving the award.

Overall, the PA Foundation Scholarship application is relatively straightforward! For the application, you will fill out demographics information, a detailed financial need statement, and submit two essays. For 2018, the prompts are listed below! Your program director will also need to confirm that you currently attend a PA program.

1. In 500 words or less, please describe your involvement in relevant volunteer and/or community service activities. Do not include mentoring, shadowing and/or paid activities. Why did you choose these particular activities, and what do they mean to you? *

2. Please provide an essay (maximum 500 words) concerning your decision to become a PA and what you expect to accomplish as a PA, including any specific clinical interest areas you may have. What do you hope to do as a PA? *

“The wedding ceremony took place, and it took another year before I saw F again. When I laid my eyes on her, she was thin and frail, barely smiling and joking like she used too. As we started to catch up, I couldn’t help but notice that she had a visible “bump.” Over the next few days, I learned that her pregnancy was complicated by a lack of proper nutrition and prenatal care. F was due in a week and she was seeing a doctor for the first time. She was pale, her veins barely noticeable; she carried the baby, but it looked as though the baby was leeching the life out of her. One night, I woke up and found my mother with red eyes, like she had been crying. All I remember are the words “gave birth… complication,” and in the wake of the night, just like that, at fifteen years young, F was gone. In the next few years, I came to realize that this reality – lack of preventative healthcare, access to basic services, essential medications – was the norm in my village. In Niger, a gravid woman must bring sterile gloves in her own birth bag, because even the top hospital can’t afford to offer them to every patient. There, healthcare was a privilege rather than a basic right. [...] F, and then later A, are just two of the many women I know whose stories drove me to join the medical field as an aspiring OB/GYN PA. Whether in a developing nation in Africa or the inner cities of New York City, there’s a strong need for quality prenatal care and preventative education. I want to help young women attain the knowledge to better take care of themselves and make their own informed choices. As a PA, I intend to change lives and most likely, even save some.”

Q&A REFLECTION

Q: So CONGRATS on receiving a PA Foundation Scholarship! How are you feeling and what advice would you give future PA students interested in applying for these scholarships?

A: Thank you so much. I am currently in my pediatrics clerkship and it was a slow clinic day until I read that email. It made my day and gave me lots of energy. I was in disbelief and had to read the email twice to make sure it did say that I have won. Then, I just texted V who was the reason I applied and won. Some advice I would give future/current PA students and myself is to:

Always explore opportunities that come our way.

Take risks and allow yourself to fail. It is okay and promotes growth.

Apply early and every year while you are in school, it is never too much money.

Your essay should be personal and relatable. Just pick one event in your life that triggered a positive change in your life or affected you deeply.

Find friends/family to guide you and support you during the process.

You always feel better if you have tried and failed than not trying at all.

Q: That's really great pieces of advice and I would agree with all of them! What is one piece of advice you would give to PA or Pre-PA students who are worried about the cost of attending PA school?

A: If you have made the decision to take out loans for PA school (like I have done), just put the thought of "How am I going to pay this back?" aside while you are in school (didactic year at least). It is one more thing on your plate that is already overflowing. I don’t think you have space for more stressors.

You have made a great decision for yourself and loved ones by pursuing a career - focus on that first. The one thing that you can do to lessen the burden is to be mindful of your spending habits, just take what is indispensable. And there are so many options available for how to pay back loans. Your job can have loan repayment programs, there are federal loan repayment programs, and lastly, with a decent job you can pay off your loans.

He received immense backlash, which led to an apology. Logan pledged to donate one million dollars to suicide prevention. He got some generous donations from his fans and set an example for other influencers to learn from his mistakes. After proving that he has matured, Logan managed to gather an astonishing 23.3 million subscribers and earns about 82,400 US dollars per Instagram post.

Cameron Dallas

Number Nine. Cameron Dallas. Like Logan, Cameron also started out with Vine and was the 11th most-followed account on the platform. After Vine shut down, Cameron grew his YouTube channel and TikTok account, becoming a popular Instagram personality. He has also ventured into acting, music, and modeling. One of his biggest feats is that he has his own reality show on Netflix called “Chasing Cameron”. However, Cameron has dealt with some personal issues and was arrested for assault in 2018. He revealed that he struggled with addiction, trauma, and depression. Nevertheless, Cameron is loved for initiating a charity that benefits children, called ‘Together We Rise’. His charity specifically caters to foster children and has raised 125,000 thousand dollars till now. The charity provides these children with supplies and even cars once they get emancipated or go off for work. For these reasons, Cameron has huge followership of 21.9 million on Instagram and earns 87,900 US dollars per post!

Felix Kjellberg

Number Eight. Felix Kjellberg. Much widely known as ‘PewDiePie’. Felix is one of the most subscribed YouTube channels of all time, racking up a total of 110 million subscribers! Felix dropped out of college to pursue his career as a YouTube personality and gaming influencer. He is best known for his hilarious playthroughs and reactions. He was mentioned in ‘The World’s 100 Most Influential People by Time Magazine in 2016. Felix is also loved for the many charities that he has donated over a million dollars too. Some of these include “Save the Children, Charity: water, RED, and World Wildlife Funds. On Instagram, where Felix has 21.7 million followers, he posts mainly about his life, friends, and family and promotes his merchandise. In total, he earns about 88,700 US dollars per post.

Loren Gray

Number Seven. Loren Gray. Loren started out her social media career through Musical.ly, where she posted lip-synching videos. However, she started getting bullied at school after gaining a lot of followers. Loren then decided to get home-schooled while she pursued her online influence career. Loren is known to have released a few singles, participated in music videos, and even attended the AMAs! She is also loved by her fans to be very down to earth and sharing her personal moments with them. Loren’s Instagram following is 21.8 million and she earns 88,900 US dollars per post.

Zach King

Number Six. Zach King. Zach got into video making from a very young age. He made his first video when he was seven and bought his first camera, tripod, and Mac computer to start editing his own video when he was fourteen. Zach is best known for his “magic vines” videos. These are clips edited to make it look like a magic trick performance. Zach has won many accolades and awards for his work and even appeared on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ in 2014. Apart from amazing people with his superior editing skills, Zach also uses his platform for the greater good, that is humanity. He gives monthly donations to the spring monthly donation program that works for the benefit of water. It helps to provide clean water to those who do not have access to it. Consequently, Zach has gained over 24.2 million followers on Instagram and earns 98,900 US dollars per post!

Dixie D’Amelio

Number Five. Dixie D’Amelio. Dixie is an online sensation. Often collaborating with her older sister, Charlie D’Amelio, she is best known for her dance and lip-synching videos on TikTok. She also has a YouTube channel with over 7.4 million subscribers, where she posts daily vlogs, as well as Q&A and makeup videos. She is also pursuing acting and singing. Despite being accused of ‘weaponizing’ racism and behaving rudely towards her personal chef, Dixie is still widely loved by her fans. She shares her lavish lifestyle with her 24.4 million followers on Instagram through selfies, outfit photos and snaps with friends and family. Apparently, Dixie earns 99,800 US dollars per Instagram post!

Sommer Ray

Number Four. Sommer Ray. Sommer is another online influencer career who started through Vine, making fun videos with her mother, Shannon Ray. She is now known to be a fitness freak model. Her YouTube channel with over 1.8 million subscribers is dedicated to workout, game challenges, vlogs, and prank videos. Sommer has amassed 26.5 million followers on Instagram, where she shares her fitness videos and modelling pictures and earns a good 108,300 US dollars per post.

Addison Rae

Number Three. Addison Rae. Addison rose to fame through TikTok, sharing unique and original dances, lip-sync videos, duets, and hilarious sketches. She collaborates with other creators and celebrities, gaining over 82.5 million followers! Addison also started a YouTube channel for Q&As, makeup routine and daily vlogs that now has over 4.7 million subscribers. She also co-founded Items Beauty, which is a new cosmetics line. Addison has participated in charity as well. She won a million dollars from a live virtual tennis tournament against other influencers, which she donated to ‘No Kid Hungry’, a charity that aims to end child hunger in the United States. Addison is also an avid user of Instagram, where she regularly shares selfies and outfit photos with her 38.2 million followers and documents her holidays and days out with friends and family. She earns 155,800 US dollars per post!

Charlie D’Amelio

Number Two. Charlie D’Amelio. Dixie’s younger sister, Charlie is the most followed personality on TikTok with over 122.3 million followers. She is seventeen years old and posts dancing videos; some she choreographs herself that often go viral. She has been called “the reigning TikTok queen” by the New York Times. She also used the platform to donate 100,000 dollars to an American Dance Movement, a dance charity that focuses on improving and increasing access to dance education in the United States. Charlie has been competitively dancing since she was five and is now working with United Talent Agency to work on future projects like digital content, tours, podcasts and more. Her 42.3 million followers on Instagram get to see Charlie’s happening lifestyle through her outfit pictures and photos with friends and family. Charlie manages to earn as much as 172,700 US dollars per post!

Eleonora Pons

Number One. Eleonora Pons. Pons is again another influencer that started out on Vine. Before the app shut down, she was the most followed and most watched personality on the platform. Pons currently has a YouTube channel with over 17.7 million subscribers, where she posts comedy dramas and sketches. She has also participated in film, television, and music videos, and even released her own music. Ponsa also stays true to her roots by using her online platform to raise awareness of the difficult situation her home country, Venezuela, faces. She used her comedy style to attract more viewers to the crisis. Pons is currently the most followed Instagram influencer, where she shares funny clips and models outfits for her 45.3 million followers. She is also the richest Instagram influencer, earning a whopping 180,000 US dollars per post!

Special Mention

Special Mention. Khaby Lame. It is worth mentioning Khaby as he has gone from losing his job at the start of the pandemic to rapidly gaining 102.9 million followers on TikTok and has been beating records during this journey. Khaby is known for calling out the Internet’s worst life hacks, such as opening a banana with a knife or building a contraption to put on shoes. In just a little over a month of starting, he had gained 50 million followers on the platform. His style of mocking is what people find hilarious, where he doesn’t say a single word, but uses easily understandable facial expressions and gestures. By sharing his content on Instagram as well, Khabi managed to steal the crown for the most-followed Italian star on Instagram from the powerful Chiara Ferragni. Khaby has managed to gain 35 million followers on Instagram, and reportedly earns 81,000 US dollars per post. He is close to beating Logan Paul and entering the top ten list of richest Instagram influencers in the world!

To Video or not to Video? Fan Blog on David Duchovny Hell or HighWater Tour: (Second blog in series) I recently attended a book event and concert in Seattle and had intended to write one blog about the experience. I quickly came to the realization that I needed to write several blogs to do the experience justice. I decided the morning after the concert that one blog needed to be on my conflicted viewpoints related to the issue of taping, periscoping, phoning the concert. I want to begin with three contextual things to consider in terms of the experience. 1. Any live concert experience has the potential to be transcendent.. Seeing a performance live is different than a recording, a streaming, viewing concert footage. The concert experience includes the interactions with the people around you and how the artist responds to that audience. Certain artists make each concert experience unique which is why people will go to see one artist night after night in the same tour. At its heart, the best rock concert experiences are a communicative exchange of love and appreciation between the artist and the fans. The musicians’ performance is enhanced or worsened by the audience. Fan enjoyment of the music can be greatly increased by an artist, like Mr. Duchovny, who is working to interact fully with members of the audience. Fans who might have not known each other before the event might feel a special bond with each other because the experience is so magical and unique. I have seen this, for instance, with the Dead. Ever witnessed two Deadheads realizing they were both in Ithaca on the night of whatever in the seventies? Forty years later they are bonded, discussing the moment, heart beating as one. Mr. Duchovny made a statement in the book event in Seattle related to why he toured. He is motivated by the experience with the audience that exists only on that specific night. I’m an experienced concert goer. I have never experienced anything like my experience in Seattle in terms of being in the moment. 2. David Duchovny has a fierce, strong passionate fan base. Mr. Duchovny repeatedly says in interviews that he is not vain enough to think people are coming to see him as a musician but because of his fame. If they come and they don’t like the music that's valid, but if they like the music then that's valid too. I heard people in Seattle say “I just touched Mulder.” I get that. However, I am not sure if Mr. Duchovny and his band fully realize how things have changed in the last year within his fan base. I met in Seattle the Dutch Duchovniacs who, having seen him in Amsterdam, came to the US to see his Portland and Seattle shows. I am virtual friends with people who saw him in Europe who are here for the Eastern half of the tour. They don’t do that because they want to touch Mulder again. They are doing that because they love the music and because they love the concert experience which David Duchovny provides. Also, they come because they love one another: their fellow travelers in the Duchovny community. Much like the Deadheads, the fans of Mr. Duchovny’s music have formed a special bond. They are small but strong. I stood in the rain eating pizza with my friend Cathy to assure we were the first in the line for Duchovny’s Seattle concert. I had just met the man at a book signing. I didn’t stand in line for hours in the rain for a concert for any other reason than a sincere desire to see the musician/songwriter. I hope that David Duchovny recognizes that we didn’t do that because we are crazy for Mulder (although of course we are), but because we truly love the music and the experience –that he doesn’t see us as crazed fans, but as part of a community some call Duchovniacs who want him to feel supported and loved in his musical endeavors. We are grateful for his touring and giving us the experience. We know he has a day job acting and a side job novelist and he doesn't have to do this. Mr. Duchovny has a fandom for his music because of his music. This fandom is growing due, at least partially, to the efforts of this fan base. 3. Mr. Duchovny arrives here as a new musician already a mega star as an actor. That does change the dynamics of the experience. If he was any other musical artist at this stage of his musical career, the desire to take videos and pictures would be less strong. However,he is not. I cannot imagine what it is like for the private individual, David Duchovny, to exist in his day to day world of fandom obsession for Mulder and Moody.. I knew when he left Seattle on Monday. Not that I wanted to. It came up on my Twitter feed. I saw pictures of him on his day off between the West and East Coast tour. Is there anybody on the planet photographed more than him? Yet I’m the first one to say that the planet needs more photographs of him. (No, truly, we need more photographs of David Duchovny). The concert photographs of Duchovny are among the best. He hasn’t banned photography from his concerts. I hope he doesn't. He has at concerts, from time to time, asked people to put away their phones. As much as I love the videos and photographs, if Mr. Duchovny wants this one small aspect of his career to not be about filming his performance, but to be about the opportunity to have a interactive experience with him audience to artist that is in the moment-I’m all in for that. My Seattle experience on this topic. For the book discussion we were told photography was allowed but no flash and no photography for the signing portion. I videotaped a total of ten minutes of the discussion and Q and A. This was my contribution to the fandom now loaded on YouTube. It was various portions of the discussion. I am happy to have my friend’s Cathy’s question and Mr. Duchovny’s funny reaction, thoughtful and in depth answer. She will always have that and is able to share it with others. . I did not feel it was intrusive or would keep me from living the experience as it was happening. It was during this discussion/QA that David made the statement related to why he tours and then said that everyone has a fucking phone and then it's on YouTube and then it's forever. He did not sound happy about that. Therefore, I made the decision not to film any footage at the Seattle concert, not to tweet during the concert, but to be at the concert engaged. It was incredible. Add to David Duchovny’s many varied talents his ability to make everyone in a crowd of 500 feel like they had individualized interactions with him. Two memories are particularly strong from the concert. In Unsaid Unsung, his angry song, he was on the stage near us, bent all the way down so his face seemed within inches of ours when he singed /yelled “I said I’m done.” Then, something I had never seen in concert footage, still bending, his facial expression cold, he put his hands up so they were just beneath his eyes, held them as if in a fist, but not as if about to hit, more as if closing himself off, then backed away while maintaining eye contact. At least it seemed that way to me. I mean I don’t know how he could maintain eye contact with more than one person, but it felt like he was staring directly at me. It was so intense and so appropriate for the song. I can close my eyes right now and see that. Incredible! If I had been trying to capture the moment instead of living it I could not have lived it in the same intense manner. The other moment was during the encore when Mr. Duchovny came into the audience to dance. I was very near but did not move to dance with him. Instead I stood very close to the scene as an observer. Women surrounded him touching him and dancing. There was one moment when he kind of wiggled down and the women around him were wiggling down as well. There is an image framed in my mind’s eye of him with his eyes closed, butt out for a wiggle, hands up, and a facial expression of such joy. It was a beautiful thing to see and for me completely illustrates his reason for touring as stated in his book discussion. The interactive experience with the audience brings him joy. It brought the audience members joy as well. The next day, however, I was delighted when a friend sent me a screen cap from a video of David Duchovny singing with a picture of us looking up at him. Through out the day we found others. Someone near where we sat captured a couple of songs and we kept saying “ooh remember when he did that.” We saw a video of him and Keaton Simon together on stage from the other side of where we were and saw interactions we would not otherwise have seen. There is a video tape which clearly shows me moving out of the front row so another fan could be close for her favorite song and then that fan taking off her bra, throwing it on stage and displaying her breasts until Mr. Duchovny’s fatherly steen shaking of his head convinced her to cover them again. The best part of the video for me is seeing the look on Cathy’s face when it happened. That was part of our concert experience. Even though we were upset by that aspect of the evening at the time, it was certainly fun to watch it the next day. I was concerned about the young woman who had thrown her bra being in the picture, but she has tweeted herself a picture of her bra on stage. She owns the moment and does not seemed regretful. Those videos and photographs enhanced our concert experience. They allowed us to return to the moment in a different way. We watched the footage of “the weight” with David Duchovny and Keaton Simon on repeat. Cathy and I also discussed that without the Duchovniacs footage of the European tour we would likely not have had a desire to attend a concert. It is the fans footage that made us aware of how awesome this live experience might be. The original Duchovniacs have increased the fandom, increased the people who call themselves Duchovniacs, in much the same way the boot legged recordings of Dead increased the fandom of Deadheads. So there’s the dilemma. These videos enhance the post concert experience for those who attended. The videos are important to the fans who cannot afford to travel to the limited locations he is performing. The videos increase the fans desire to go and build the audience. Yet at the actual concert they distract from the experience and might actually impact the quality of the performance. No easy answers here. Mr. Duchovny would be within his rights to prohibit photography and filming. He hasn’t done that yet. He has asked people to turn off their phones during some concerts. One option might be to have each concert professionally videotaped and edited and offered for sale. If there was a video of the concert performance I saw, I would want it. Another option would be to have a section where photography and videotaping was allowed in the audience and ban it in other sections- perhaps in one section of the floor or a higher up section. Again no easy answers. I have conflicted feelings about the issue of whether or not to “phone” the concerts. Those conflicted feelings are also part of my concert experience from Seattle.

M: Well, the Hands of Dawn are fairly obvious. As for the rest, I'm wearing the Light’s crown and virtue, Grasp of thorns and the Malkarion’s march.

O: (Shouting) You’re even more of a prick with those on than you are normally.

M:( Flustered) Don’t mind him

I: Not at all. What’s the inspiration for your armor?

M: I’ve never had this question but I'm gonna say….mmm… Pointy Valkyrie.

I: Unorthodox…. I like it.

M: Will that be all?

I; Yes. Please get your brother, will You. And It’s been a pleasure to have you

O:(Walks in)

I: Hi, How are You?

O: just get it over with.

O:(sighing) I’m a slayer, A hero and a winner. I slay what needs slayin’.What else is there to know?

I: Ok. What's your favorite weapon to slay them with?

O:(condescendingly points at hands of night) WHatta you think?

I: And why did you choose them?

O: I like to get in close and personal with these babies. The way I see it, If i’m fighting this thing, I wanna make sure it’s done on my terms. And these have never let me down.

I: (hmmph)And what is your load out?

O: (brashly) Dark marrow, Brow of Ice, Togadoro brawn and the dance of the swarm to top it off. All in black naturally. (smirking while leaning in chair)

M:(Shouting from outside) Moody!

O: (caught by surprise) SHUT UPPPP!

I: Will you please go get your sister.

O: Oh, all right. (gets up)

M:(teasingly) What’s up. Can't behave, can you?

O: (Furrowing eyebrows.)

I: OOOOOK then now for the second part. I want to ask you two-since you hunt as a duo-how that feels. Mika?

M: it feels good having someone to-(interrupted)

O: She keeps telling me to “be careful” Yeah thanks mo-(smacked upside the head) OWWWWW.

M: You know damn well that she would do this too if she were still here.

O: (rubbing head)Ok,jeez. Still, why?

M: So sorry about it. Honestly he sometimes is denser than a skarn’s arse to talk to. (mutters) Also smells like one too.

O:(indignantly) OOOH! ( Hands of Night fly on) You wanna go Princess. I’ll show you how dense I can be…

M: (wide-eyed-Oh-no-u-just-didn’t-bitch stare at him)(hands of dawn glow) PRINCESS. I’LL SHOW YOU JUST HOW MUCH OF A PRINCESS I AM! (Hands of dawn Glow brighter)

( Settled down after about a minute.

Can video games be considered an art form?

Initially, after spending some time looking at five possible subject ideas, I had decided to research into and write an essay on Art Nouveau as I felt that this was a style that was very similar to my own portrait illustration style. However, I was also considering the topic ‘Can video games be considered an art form?’, as video games are something I have always enjoyed and there are many aspects of game creation that I feel I would enjoy being a part of. After looking at possible sources for both topics, I eventually decided to continue with ‘Can video games be considered an art form?’ as there were far more books and articles on all points of view for video games than there were for Art Nouveau, and I felt much more inspired for this subject than the previous one.

  The question of video games as art is one that has been asked before, and I am taking the most direct approach to answering this.

I will be focusing on the most obvious element of the visual graphics, and to a lesser extent, soundtracks and in-game audio, involved in the game. Concept artworks and character designs offer an inside view of a game’s development, while designer’s commentaries and Q&A sessions at events such as E3 can show the thought processes that went into making them.

By looking at the design and ideation processes of making games, it is possible to more accurately assess them under the kinds of criteria that more traditional, uncontested artwork is measured by.

Video Games are a $138 billion industry, and this is no longer based on initial game purchases (Ell, 2018). The introduction of microtransactions for in-game cosmetic items demonstrates a direct financial benefit to the developers for what is essentially a purely artistic contribution. This, coupled with merchandising and licensing of creative content from video games shows the clear monetary significance of this field.

Video games aren’t just of significance to those who are making them. Video games attract players from across the globe, and the growing popularity of e-sports stands as evidence of the reach that these games can have. Gaming networks such as PSN or Xbox Live connect these players together, and often these players share an appreciation for the aesthetics of a game as much as its actual gameplay.

I am looking at whether video games can be considered as works of art. In this essay I am going to look at the definitions of art, the definitions of a video game, and where there is overlap between the two, such as the desired emotional response that a game produces. I am also going to look at the effects of art on video games; the value of concept sketches and the role of the artist in game design as well as in- game cosmetic items and their impact on a game’s appeal.

My first point of research was to read through the commentary accompanying my collection of video game art books. Three titles stood out in particular; The Art of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey (Lewis, 2018), The Art of Assassin’s Creed: Origins (Davies, 2017), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider: The Official Art Book (Dubeau, 2018).

Shadow of the Tomb Raider: The Official Art Book (Dubeau, 2018) gave a clear commentary on the intentions and thought processes of the design team in developing the environments, creatures, characters, and puzzles of the game. Davies and Dubeau talk in detail about the kinds of emotional responses they wanted different areas and challenges within the game to inspire in the player, and how their artistic and design decisions reflect this.

The Art of Assassins Creed: Origins (Davies, 2017) talks about the artistic challenges in creating a game world that is beautiful and interesting, but at the same time historically accurate and believable. Davies talks about the importance of blending the aesthetics of the game’s artwork with the mechanics of the gameplay to create something ‘spectacular’.

The Art of Assassins Creed: Odyssey (Lewis, 2018)  is different from the previous Assassin’s Creed book mentioned, as it is written by a different author and looks at the challenges of blending the different gameplay mechanics in a way that is visually seamless, and how the artistic design of the game is important to this. Additionally, this game had a much stronger focus on mythical creatures and folklore, and so the designers also had to create these creatures in scenarios that the players would find believable and impressive.

Moving away from specific concept art books, I looked at similar papers on the question of video games as an art form, and Aaron Smuts of Wisconsin University (2005) is one of the more oft-cited authors. In his essay he discusses the definitions of art and how video games could be considered art in the same way as animation. He cites the examples of Max Payne (2001), Halo (2001), and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell (2002). His work is older, dating from 2005, so may be of less relevance today as games have advanced significantly.

One text that was particularly dated was Crawford’s The Art of Computer Game Design (1982). Published in 1982, this book is a guide on how to design a computer game, and it treats the subject in much the same way that ‘how to’ art books discuss composition, mood, and theme. Crawford discusses how games are distinct from stories, and how the aspiring game designer should consider theme and mood in order to create a truly great video game. Although it is over thirty years old, this book deals with fundamental principles of design that have not changed.

Why Game Studies Now differs from the other works in my research, in that Gee (2006) begins with the assertion that video games are an art form and argues that as a largely new and unknown art form they are deserving of a field of study so as to more objectively consider their artistic value. Rather interestingly, the essay looks at earlier games (namely Tetris) as an example of video games that are not artistic, and what makes them different from modern, story-driven games. This essay, like Smuts’, is also somewhat older, from 2006.

In A Short and Simple Definition of What a Videogame Is, Esposito (2005) defines a video game as ‘a game which we play thanks to an audiovisual apparatus and which can be based on a story.’ (Esposito, 2005).  He also states that Eric Zimmerman’s definition of a game is very close to accurate in defining a video game, but it falls short in that it does not consider games with no quantifiable conflict or resolute outcome (‘A game is a voluntary interactive activity, in which one or more players follow rules that constrain their behavior, enacting an artificial conflict that ends in a quantifiable outcome.’) (Esposito, 2005). Games without conflict or a quantifiable outcome include titles such as The Sims, and even simple puzzle games such as Tetris. Should these titles not be considered games because of these factors? Personally, I find Esposito’s definition to be more applicable to all modern games, including video games. However, I disagree with his idea that a video game needs to be based on a story, again using the example of Tetris.

In 2010 the case for video games being treated as artworks was taken to the US supreme court (BROWN, GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA . v. ENTERTAINMENT MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION, 2010), in the case of Brown Vs the Entertainment Merchants Association. The outcome of this case was the ruling that video games were sufficiently similar to other accepted works of art as to be awarded the same status and protections as film, music, and print media. While this doesn’t settle the debate entirely, it does provide a compelling case in favour.

Brenda Romero (Romero, 2016) gave a TED talk in which she explored whether video games could be considered an art form and looked in detail at the arguments for and against. Romero is an award-winning game designer as well as an artist, and is uniquely placed to comment on this debate. There were some factual errors in her talk however, such as incorrectly citing a game’s publisher, which damages her credibility slightly.

Tavinor’s (2009) The Art of Video Games looks at the human response to video games. It considers the narrative, emotion, and morality behind video games, before looking at if video games can be considered art. This book is a particularly comprehensive resource, covering a wide range of sub-topics around art and video games. The key concepts that inform this subject are video games, concept art, game design, the definition of art, video game cosmetics, skins and decals, character design, environmental design, lighting, ambiance, soundtrack, and emotion. Art is a difficult term to pin down. Each of my secondary sources cites the definition that they use when considering video games in an artistic sense. The definitions loosely agree that art is a creative endeavour and that its purpose is to evoke an emotional response, which makes collating these arguments simpler. There is a great deal of resources for concept artwork in video games and the creative processes behind them. In particular interviews and talks with various industry professionals at events such as E3 and developer’s conferences would be a valuable resource, and one I intend to look further into as my research continues. The subject of in-game purchased cosmetic upgrades (skins and mods) is a little more recent, and there is less available material on it. I will include questions on the opinion towards these in my primary research to get a better picture of the contribution that cosmetic items make towards a game.

The obvious question emerging from this research is “Are Video Games a form of Art?” and this will be the primary focus of my research. At present, the general consensus seems to be that; yes, video games are art, but it is too early for conclusions at this stage.

Over the summer I will be looking at Q&As with designers and developers to get a more comprehensive look at the thought processes that go into the making of games. I will also try to find any articles that argue against the point of video games being art, to ensure greater criticality in my final writing. Currently I don’t have any sources or knowledge on the importance or effect of soundtrack in video games, or on the culture of purchasable cosmetic in-game items, so this is something that I will also need to look into. I will also be looking at the following key texts: Image Studies: Theory and practice by Manghani S (2013), and Reading Images: The Grammar of Visual Design by Kress G and van Leeuwen T (2006).

  I still need to find some more contemporary sources regarding the artistic value of video games. While Smuts is a good example, it is over 10 years old. I will also look to gauge common opinion on whether or not video games can be considered art by carrying out a survey. Finally, I will conduct a review of specific video game reviews, and in particular comments surrounding the artistic appeal of the game, and if there is any correlation between positive reviews of a games visuals and soundtrack, and the specific score or rating that the game achieved in its review. I will only use reviews from industry professionals, rather than community or customer reviews, as these are often more fair and critical. As different publications will have different scoring systems I will standardise each score as a percentage of the maximum possible score, and refer to this percentage score throughout.

  The majority of the research for this project will be documentary analysis, although the popular opinion research will be done by surveying with a questionnaire. The questionnaire will ask the larger question of ‘Are video games art?’ but also secondary questions to determine the value of art in video games, such as how much the graphics of a game adds to its overall appeal, or if purely cosmetic in-game purchases are a factor in how much money a person is willing to spend on a game. The questionnaire will ask about preferred genre of games, and look at the impact of art between bigger budget titles and smaller independent games.

  Since I am gathering primary research, I will need to consider the ethical implications. My survey will be anonymous, and participation will be voluntary. The survey will be written to contain no distressing material, and responses will be collected online with minimum disturbance. The survey will not be biased toward any particular gaming genre, platform, or title, as these could potentially be divisive subjects amongst the gaming community. My objectives for the summer are:

To plan and carry out my primary research into the opinions of the general public.

To carry out primary research into game reviews and the impact of artistic content on the overall review score of the game.

To continue to expand my breadth of secondary sources to include developer interviews, Q&A sessions, and articles that oppose the argument of games as art.
