SW Hades AU MAY-JUNE Update

Would you look at that! I managed to put together an update post with more than just May the 4th Boba :D Happy Pride, happy last days of June, and please enjoy the fact that I finally added 2 more ladies to the Hades AU. Full renders will come.... eventually ^^; I feel like I'm really super overdue to one though...

I've drawn a younger, cockier Boba in the style of Hades 2 (instead of the usual Hades (1)) for May the 4th, because I am very much obsessed with the game and I desperately wanted to draw Boba again.

It's been deeply unfair to him that I had drawn him way back in 2022 (Jesus Christ! am I taking my sweet time) and never again ever since in this style. But when he wears it so well!

I also have a surprise Leia! And Satine as well!

If you recall I'd had the hardest of time for months to come up with anything for Leia, which I can only partially blame on whatever shape of artblock/burnout/exhaustion I had been feeling recently. Then one night - BAM! I was just messing around, looking at pose references on my pinterest boards and sketching and all, and suddenly I had a "businesswoman in a rush between meetings not having enough time for your shit" pose and look for her that I was very happy with. Might have been shortly after I watched (and had a great time while doing it) The Phantom Menace. Or the end of Andor. One of these two.

Originally I wanted her to appear as if she was on a holo call with Din, projected by R2, because she is busy and in a rush (like Hermes), but I'm undecided if I will want to go through with that in the end. Mainly because I'm not very thrilled by the idea of having to draw a portrait for R2 as well for that.

I also had a surprisingly great time coming up with a getup for her!

I believe that I finally started slipping along the double edged sword of how it's both a hindrance and liberation that I don't have to come up with character designs of my own for this AU to most characters. It takes a lot of pressure off me that I can treat this as a style and coloring exercise, but at the same time it's very limiting. I think I have already bemoaned how Star Wars character designs can be so grey and same-y at times (especially in the Outer Rim, and seriously, why is everyone so blue? Or black and grey) whereas Hades is so beautifully and colorfully designed!

I did a tiny bit of research on Wookiepedia - nothing major, as this was still just a past-midnight-waste-some-time sketch - and set out to merge some design and wardrobe elements from Breha, Bail and General Organa. If you can make out my handwritten notes, you might see some of these design elements, and to whom they shall refer to (like the bracers and belt to Bail, the braids and bun for Breha and Leia's own future). Ultimately more of the "Bail" elements won out if you wanted to weigh them against each other. I feel like that would fit Leia, her fierceness, and pragmatic strictness and determination best.

I'm a little regretful about the veil, but I worried that it would be too much flowy fabric next to her sleeves/cape. Very sad.

So it really was a relief to get into some designing with Leia, and to add some more colors and intricate details to Satine.

I don't have that much more to say about Boba and Satine tbh. Mostly because Boba is still a bit of a miracle I'm still unsure how he happened and how he looks so good (although not shiny enough compared to the latest update of Hades2 where all the gods, and really all the characters, are suuuuuper shiny. like. seriously). While with Satine my only goal was to make her look less willow-y (because it drives me insane how everyone in TCW is so damn thin), and might have fallen off on the other side of the horse (I'm pretty sure that's not the actual English idiom, please excuse me), and she's got some real massive shoulders and sleeves XD also how does she keep her head up with all that on her head? ^^;

Anyways, I love her with all her faults, and I just really wanted her to look beautiful and sad, and Mandalorian, and let her wear beskar heart elements in her design.

time for the post chapters 3&4 update to the secret lost girl / don't forget / dark truth motif post :)

i haven't sat down and combed through literally every song in the new chapters with a fine-tooth comb looking for this motif specifically, but from my listening to the ost over the past few weeks, these are the new songs that have it:

first, since it's most undeniable: "dark place"... which is basically just "the dark truth" with slightly different instrumentation, so, yeah. as a reminder, this is what the motif looks like:

second... you won't guess this one, i think.

yeah. it uses this series of five notes, repeatedly, as part of a riff.

to hear it in the og song (here's the link), go to 0:26 and then 2:33.

(bonus side note: the motif also appears in the background of feature presentation at 0:24 since it borrows the building riff. afaik it's not in any other tenna songs)

now. why is this here? option one is that this time it's entirely a coincidence, which i think is very possible. option two is that it's here more as a don't forget reference than a lost girl one, ala the motif's appearance in "the beginning"; don't forget is still the default main theme for the game, and with it having been referenced lyrically in this chapter during "raise up your bat", a version of it showing up as a cheeky subtle reference in what you expect to be the final boss of the chapter (which also reuses the music minigame) is fair enough, i think. toby's certainly used motifs in more spurious ways than that.

option three is that it is meant to call back to lost girl specifically. which, imo, isn't too far out of the realm of possibility, given that lost girl is dess's theme (yes it's used for other characters, but. come on. if nothing else findher.ogg just being a guitar cover of lost girl should prove it), and this chapter ramps up the references to her (see again "raise up your bat", which not only was likely written by her but also directly uses the main lost girl motif). her disappearance was the catalyst for the families no longer enjoying tv time together, after all. you could also maybe argue that, given lost girl plays shortly after when susie empathizes with tenna, it makes some character sense for his battle theme to include a bit of that sad song; a song about feeling abandoned or otherwise all on your own?

...you could also call it foreshadowing. given what happens (the tone shifting to a "dark[er] place") — or even, if you're so inclined, who shows up — next. and on that note (heh, note)...

the third instance of this motif in these chapters (that i've caught) is, thankfully, one where the "why?" makes a lot more immediate sense. unfortunately, the quote isn't exact.

here's the funny thing: i've seen people debating whether black knife contains lost girl. i haven't paid enough attention to that discourse to know where exactly they're saying they hear it... but i know where i hear lost girl in it. and i don't mean the main motif.

as a reminder, the five note motif we've been talking about in this post goes, from its starting note, down one, then down two, then up one, and then repeats the previous note.

the melody for the last section of black knife starts* with this:

if you take out the fourth note there, and raise the last by three to be repeating the previous... it's the secret motif. it's like the motif expected to keep going down — or something was dragging it down — but then it remembered itself and was able to leap back up, holding its footing for a brief moment... only to slide down again. it remembered, only to forget. it was itself, briefly, and then it lost hold.

knowing who the top knight candidates are at this point... can you see why, even with the alterations, i'm confident this is an intentional quote? even without that, the fact that this motif's most central appearances are in "the dark truth" and "dark place", which are strongly associated with the knight for obvious reasons, means its presence makes a lot of sense. if anything, this feels like the answer to why this motif was in lost girl in the first place :)

those are my findings! i'll update this post with another reblog if there turn out to be more instances that i missed. ftr i know the motif is also in "the distance between two", but that's just. guitar lost girl without the bit where it switches to girl next door's main motif. the sanctuary themes and other places in these chapters where don't forget shows up are possible other candidates but from my casual listening i haven't heard it; if anyone else finds it there or elsewhere please let me know!

Do you have like, an updated wishlist of what you wanna see for future protagonists/game elements/relationship dynamics for future Life Is Strange/Life is Strange-Like games?

That's a great question and it got me thinking! DE's reception and Dontnod's spin on their narrative formula with Lost Records got me thinking about the future of their projects, instead. I was really impressed with how they innovated so much with Bloom & Rage while still making it familiar and cozy to long-time fans: the queer coming-of-age themes, slow pacing, nostalgia, and character-driven story are dialed up even more, but there's also no superpowers, no freeze-frame big choices except the very last one, no prominent parental figures in the story, no school setting, and no in-game journal or texts. So, my wishlist is going to omit those things and focus on hypotheticals for future Lost Records games.

This is still a tricky situation because the post-credits scene implies a direct sequel starring Swann, so it could just be "Kat and Swann hang out in the Abyss for 12 hours: the game." Maybe Lost Records could be structured like Arcane with two-season arcs in a larger universe. Or, it could be like Infinity Train, where a main character from a previous season becomes a supporting character in the next season to link the casts together. Either way, I think it's possible to keep the characters from Bloom & Rage while expanding the cast and setting.

MORE POC/POC RELATIONSHIPS, PLEASE. Dontnod has always paired POC with white people and their games are very white because of their settings. In reality, there are plenty of diverse small-town communities in the US! Nora lives in LA and Autumn lives in Atlanta as as adult, both of which have nearby suburbs that are very racially diverse. In the future, I'd really like to see them move away from the sticks.

Also, a protagonist of color whose story doesn't revolve entirely around racial trauma like in LiS2. I really appreciated that Nina Freeman and Desiree Cifre chose to explore the more insidious type of racism Autumn experienced in the internalized pressure to be the perfect Black girl in a town that would always judge her more harshly, even if I feel like her character was sidelined by the end.

More wlw and mlm actually existing together!! It's wild to me that in so many stories, the only queer characters are the protagonist and their love interest, when in reality, queer people flock together even before they realize they're queer! B&R nailed this aspect of how quickly the band met and connected with each other, and the riot grrrl themes of the story makes sense that they wouldn't have any close guy friends, but LiS1, BtS, and TC only had wlw and TMW and LiS2 only had mlm. In future games I would love to see an actual ensemble cast of queer people of all genders who get along. A chill platonic friendship between a lesbian and gay guy could be so fun and sweet.

In my last wishlist, I focused on the 21-25 age range. Bloom & Rage covers teenhood and forties, but what about the decades outside of those? I think a character in their thirties could be interesting because it represents that life stage where you're leaving your chaotic twenties and trying to settle into your life choices, but that can also be a difficult transition period. Swann, Autumn, and Nora are mostly settled by their forties in lives and careers they're satisfied with, and Autumn has made peace with her divorce. By contrast, maybe a character in their thirties has been trying for years to make a certain career work out and it just isn't working. Or they're facing a divorce, the birth of their first child, or contending with still being single in their thirties. Or, they're just reeling at how old they've gotten so fast! It could be an interesting headspace to explore. Plus, we've never gotten a game from a parent's perspective.

Another age range I'm curious about is the middle grade years (11-14). We had 9-year-old kids in Chris and Daniel from LiS2 and our fair share of teens and young adults, but less about those horrible years in middle school. This is a tougher sell because I'm sure nobody wants to relive those years, but it's also such a unique life stage and I think you could explore a range of personalities, maturity levels, and life struggles through a tween's eyes. Young Max and Chloe were unique and intriguing in Farewell, and I'd be curious to see how DN could tackle that age. Nora's twins look very young, like probably no older than 4 or 5, but it's possible Autumn's son could be 10 or older already by 2022.

DN has always been known for their genre mashups unique to video games, but I feel like they've been wanting to make a horror game for years and I think they should go for it! Pure horror might be out of place in LR game, but we have no idea what they could have planned. A horror sequence that isn't just another trippy nightmare could be really cool.

An actual nonbinary character would be awesome, and one who doesn't spend their entire screentime educating the audience about their identity and is a fully fleshed out and interesting character. Same for a character on the ace/aro spectrum. And I'd really like to see a confirmed neurodivergent character played by a neurodivergent actor.

Michel Koch likes to create protagonists that are somewhat similar to him, so we've gotten mostly quiet, introverted, artsy types who are a little nerdy. I think playing as an extraverted and less visibly awkward character could shake up the dialogue (just imagine 1995 Nora's dialogue trees 😂), and you can still make an artsy and visually interesting game with a protagonist who's more into science, tech, or other subjects. You could even be extra meta and make them a game dev! Plus, a science-minded person might be interested in actual lore for all the supernatural elements.

The dual timeline narrative in Bloom & Rage got me wondering if instead of playing as the same character in different life stages, what if we could play as members of a family in different generations? For example, one character in the "past" timeline and the character's child in the "present" timeline. I know generational trauma is the narrative buzzword of the decade, but it's less-explored ground in a video game. It might make the story too bloated, but it could be interesting. Again, we don't know anything about Autumn and Nora's kids, so that could be a chance to explore that.

Thank you for asking! This got really long, but I really want Lost Records to become DN's new flagship series and I think there's so much narrative potential!

Here's a ref I used for the image here/PFP by the way, a replica of the mystery shack I build in Welcome to Bloxburg. Additionally, the flowers in the image are all references. The hardest to catch are the red flowers- based on the Cave Story ones, but I couldn't find a good picture of those, so they're basically just random red flowers visually. Still, they're those in spirit. There's also the Sundrop flower from Tangled (because I like that one) and Gracidea flowers from Pokemon. Those are the ones associated with Shaymin. Also, the animal TT is looking at here is a Jackalope.

Episode Cast List Updates on IMDb!

We definitely have a very good idea now what’ll happen when

So at lot of the cast lists on IMDb have been updated for the earlier episodes, which gives us a very good idea of what might be going down. I went through each episode cast list to add a couple of thoughts (if you don’t want spoilers, this might not be the post for you):

Episode 1: Season of Mists

This hints at Season of Mists (esp. Prologue/Family Dinner and Chapter 1, where Dream says goodbye to Lyta/Daniel and Hob and Cain goes to Hell to announce Dream’s arrival) and Tales in the Sand, because we obviously have Nada and Kai’ckul in there, plus a lot of the other cast seem to be Nada’s people?

Episode 2: The Ruler of Hell

As expected, this looks very much like Season of Mists Chapters 2 into 5 (Nuala and Cluracan arrive later than everyone else), so Lucifer abdicating and all the guests who want the key to hell arriving in the Dreaming.

Episode 3: More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold

The conclusion of Season of Mists (Chapters 5/6 and Epilogue) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, because we have Will Shakespeare and a lot of his actors in there. My guess is that AMND could be at the start of the episode after Nuala and Cluracan arrived in the previous one to explain Dream’s connection to Faerie, to then wrap up SoM. Also: We finally have a casting for Auberon.

Episode 4: Brief Lives

There isn’t a lot of info for the second half of batch one yet, but what we get is definitely interesting. We introduce Wanda in episode 4, and we know she’s been rolled into one with Ruby and will be Dream’s and Delirium’s driver. We also already have Ishtar, Destruction and Barnabas in there, which hints at taking it to roundabout Brief Lives chapter 5. It makes sense, because we have a lot to go through in the second half of batch one. But what I found really intriguing: Martin Tenbones. So I wonder how he’ll be woven in. I don’t think we’ll get AGoY as we know it, but maybe Wanda also knows The Land? Because Dream *is* holding “The Marvelous Land of Oz” at her funeral, and the story of Princess Ozma (a girl from birth who was transformed into a boy to then transform back into a girl) is 100% not coincidental in this case…

EDIT 2: I almost forgot to mention, if you are unable to write/type your story, you can also narrate/dictate your story to your preferred recording device!

If you're doing a Recording only and it doesn't automatically generate a transcript, it would obviously be hard to judge the word count -- but you're also working with a lot of obstacles, so I'd say if you're able to complete your story via voice recording from start to finish, you've definitely achieved the goal!

Whew. I'm so glad to finally be done with these big updates. After over a year I will finally be able to return to my smaller update format.

Some keen viewers might notice the reuse of certain shots from the series. There is very much intentional, though the reason for this will not be made clear until the ending of the arc.

As of the final shot we are FINALLY back to present-day in the Replica timeline (if it wasn't obvious). I'd drop in a timeline for reference but uh... I maxed out on the Tumblr images. Oh well. Hopefully the context clues were enough to help though!

I do want to take a moment to TED Talk about Raph's ninpo, if that's alright. Unlike his brothers, Raph didn't really spend much time trying to come up with unique ways of using his abilities. Why improve what already worked for him? However, I do think one interesting ability could have come naturally to him over time. I always found his way of mentally connecting with his brothers as "Mind Raph" to be a fascinating joke in the series. They way he could help and communicate with his brothers is something that was always really important to him and I see that ability bleeding into his ninpo. Because of this I feel that his Raph clones were always able to find and reach his brothers no matter the distance. His ability to interact with them at the same time was something he was still learning in the series, like when Mind Raph apologized to Leo for taking a moment too long to respond because he was busy helping someone else. Because of this I see his clones being able to react and communicate independently (kind of like Naruto clones), but are in constant connection to the original source, Raph himself. This made it really easy for Raph to relay information to the brothers, though it was seldom needed since Donnie's ninpo tech normally had that covered. On another note, I also wanted to make a point that whenever one of the brothers died in the bad future timeline, it was when they were separated from their brothers. I always liked in the movie how it wasn't until the brothers worked together that they were able to regain their abilities, confront the Krang, and even open portals to different dimensions. I wanted that lesson to resonate in Replica as well, even if subtly. Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED Talk!

The rest of the arc will be a lot less action, but still plenty more emotions. I can't promise that we won't be doing more flashbacks in the future but nothing to the extent of the "Holiday Special." We got a story to get through after all!

Thank you so much everyone for your patience with me as I slowly inch my way through this big story. It means a lot to me! I promise the next update will not be so emotionally draining.

Say what you want about fishblr updates, but I think this format for reblubs is a wonderful improvement over the previous one. One of the only times staff did good.

@featherstar53 If reblub chains got too long, new reblubs would start appearing as darker and darker until you couldnt see the text anymore. It mimicked how light disappears as you go deeper in the ocean but the sunken code this webbedsite runs on never set a cap for how dark it gets, so eventually you would have to copy ad paste the text on the reblubs onto somewhere to read them.

Old Tumblr Dashboard (Userstyle)!!

I created a Userstyle for the Chrome/Firefox Stylus Extension that reverts the new dashboard to the old look!

You need to have Stylus installed. So if you don't have it:

Install the Stylus Firefox Addon or the Manifest V2 Chrome Extension (You can install Chrome Extensions on Edge as well)

Once it's installed into Firefox/Chrome/Edge you can proceed with adding this style or any other.

To add the style (Stylus), follow the instructions:

Click on "install".

This is an update, but to summarize what's already been said-- my roommate/fiancé and I need to leave Mississippi. We are intersex and trans, respectively. We have significantly more affordable housing and more consistent work waiting for us in NY (not NYC, upstate), already set up and agreed upon. We can't afford to move. I KNOW IT'S BEEN 8 MONTHS SINCE THE LAST UPDATE I WILL EXPLAIN!!!

Hello!

SO. It's a bit hard to describe the feeling of posting only one page to a comic series I've been neglecting for 8 months (which was for a good reason!). I have been intentionally distancing myself from the Undertale and Deltarune communities. Not out of malice or annoyance!!!, more just because I've grown out of it (took me 8 years lol). I wasn't feeling as excited for news updates or gameplay and I realized... I didn't enjoy constantly thinking about the series like I used to. (plus I had little time for other art, comic projects, and real life.)

So I decided to take a loooong hiatus. That was one hell of a smart decision (good job past me). I was able to THINK about other games and shows and interests. I rekindled my love of bugs and nature and SOIL and then I made a full on Hollow Knight comic. And I got to educate people on BUGS (it's been amazing).

But... Today I was reading over the comic for the first time in a long time... and I could see and feel my passion for art literally seep through the page.I remembered how much I tried to breath life into these characters and it inspired me to continue ((literally TODAY)). Because passion pushes me to do what I love :')

COMIC UPDATE:

*cough* Anyways- I wanted to let readers of this comic know that I am still unsure what the future looks like for the series. I have 5 pages scripted and essentially finished. And I do have an end game in mind (even though that may be an extra 30 pages lmao). But drawing this comic takes TIME and A LOT of ENERGY. If you guys know me,,, haha,, I'm really bad at guesstimating times. And I'm even worse at being prepared and on top of things...

I want to submit single pages from now on. AND do minimal coloring. Having multiple COLORED pages was actually wild and I do not know how I did that for so long. I am unsure when the next page will come out (because I am also STILL MAKING MY OTHER COMIC <3), but it will not be out anytime this week.
