#also we see how much Five cares for Delores

I just wanna take a moment and appreciate Aidan’s acting because the “put her down” scene was honestly so good. Five looked a little crazy and a little scared and just. It looked like how someone who’d been in a post-apocalyptic wasteland with a mannequin for decades would look if someone threatened to drop her out of a two (?) story window.

Would you take a request where s1 Five accidentally takes one of Klaus' drug chocolates and starts talking about Delores and Klaus takes this opportunity to ask him to describe her because he doesn't know she is a mannequin and Five doesn't tell him that so it's also funny.
I LOVED DOING THIS UGGGHH thank you so much <3 sorry it took me a bit! Had to work and couldn't find time to upload this! I hope you like it anyway!!
Co-uploaded on ao3, go give it some love here too!
It happened on a Tuesday morning, ironically. Five was tired, and anxious, still reeling from returning home after forty-five years. He hadn’t quite gotten over reuniting with his siblings yet. Being with them was awkward to him, but he couldn’t say that he hadn’t missed them dearly.
He was stuck trying to figure out how to stop the apocalypse all on his own instead of being with his siblings. He wanted to hang out with them, catch up and just finally, finally see the people they’ve truly become. But no, here he was, in his room writing equation after equation on what could cause the apocalypse.
“Darling, please go get water. Take a break.”
Five sighed, looking over at Delores, his fingers fidgeting impatiently with the chalk he clutched in his hand.
“I’m onto something here,” he scribbled some lines next to a few numbers, “Maybe after this.” he added.
His stomach rumbled, and his brows furrowed in anger, only suddenly taking in the fact that he was painfully hungry.
He heard Delores chuckle as he decided to head down to the kitchen, upset mumblings coming from him as he went.
When he arrived in the basement kitchen, he looked around. There wasn’t much down here kitchen-wise. It was a rather small area for him to make something other than a sandwich, more an extra living room than an area for food— nonetheless, he decided on a flutternutter.
He opened the fridge, grabbing the peanut butter. He went to close it when he caught whiff of a chocolate scent. He looked down at the full tray of brownies taking up the bottom shelf. Not quite caring whose it was, he grabbed one, letting himself indulge in it before he made an actual meal.
It tasted normal, if not quite bland and lacking in flavor, but he didn’t care, sweets were sweets.
He finished making his sandwich, deciding to eat it at the table instead of his room. Of course, he still grabbed a notebook and continued his equations while he ate.
Afterall, the apocalypse waited for no one.
Knitting was a chore, Klaus thought. As much as he loved knitting, he often found himself getting tired and antsy after an hour or two of doing it.
“I’m hungry, Ben.” he whined, looking over his shoulder to find that nobody was there. “Oh, you little shit!”
He supposed if he was bored, Ben probably was too. He had no right to tell Ben if he could leave or not, but he was still quite petty about it. Who was to entertain him during these hard and trying times?
A picture of drugs came to mind. “No Benjamin to tell me anything. I deserve good things too!” he talked to himself as he hobbled down the stairs to the kitchen.
He spotted Five at the end of the table, mumbling. “Hey, sport,” he grinned to himself at the name, “Watcha’ doing?”
No response.
“Five?”
Still nothing. Klaus strolled over to Five, watching him write in his notebook. “Is that what the math you do looks like? It makes me nauseous looking at it!” He joked. Concern tightened at his chest as he studied the writing. It didn’t even look coherent. He’s peeked into Five’s room before, and the math on his wall looked nothing like this.
This notebook just looked like scribbles.
“Heyyy, why don’t we put this down for a little, yeah?” Klaus cautiously grabbed the boy’s pencil, placing it away from him. Klaus sat in the seat next to him, putting his head on the table to look at the boy’s face.
Five looked over at him, a pouting look on his face as his lips thinned slightly. Klaus would’ve missed the tears stuck on his eyelashes had it not been for the way the light hit them.
His heart pummeled to his stomach, “Five… What’s wrong?” He’d never seen Five cry before. Never in his thirty-four years of life. It was strange, wrong, and most of all, heartbreaking.
When you see someone, you’ve never seen cry before, it seriously hits you hard— and it was definitely hitting Klaus. He felt horrible. Five also looked like a little boy, so it was especially upsetting.
“I don’t know.” Five whined, which was weird enough as it was. “I don’t feel great, Klaus.”
Alarm bells rang in Klaus’s head. He noticed things about Five’s demeaner that he hadn’t earlier. He was twitchy, kind of sluggish, but his shoulders were hunched, like they were trying to cover his ears. His eyes were also bloodshot, and his pupils were large, although he didn’t know if that was Five’s normal pupil size, he never really looked at them that long.
With these things in mind, Klaus got up from his seat and opened the fridge. A brownie was missing. His marijuana brownies. “Nooo, Five. Did you have one of my thingies?” He urgently pointed at the tray, to which Five nodded.
A few emotions flittered across the boy's face as he ultimately ignored Klaus’s concern and focused back onto his notebook— anger, confusion, and then fatigue. “I need her here.”
Klaus felt himself growing protective, like he suddenly became a father to a child. He could feel this caring nature take over him just by watching the tears in Five’s eyes, and listening to the way his voice broke.
“Hm? What do you mean, bud?”
“Delores?” He said it like Klaus was supposed to know who he was talking about. He racked his mind for people that Five may know. Someone named Delores.
A memory popped into his head, the time at the prosthetics lab where he pretended to be Five’s dad. He had mentioned someone he was with for thirty years during the apocalypse, but he wasn’t sure if it was this woman the spoke of.
“Is she the one you were with? During the uh…” he unhelpfully waved his hands around.
“Mmhm. Yeah, her.” Five didn’t seem to notice the tears in his eyes. They still hadn’t rolled down his cheeks, so he didn’t look wrecked just yet. Klaus sat next to him again, cringing as he carefully wiped Five’s tears with his thumb.
“Do you miss her?” Klaus studied the way Five’s eyes flickered around, chasing something Klaus couldn’t see. Common side effects of marijuana, he reminded himself.
“I do. She helped me with everything. I need her right now. I can’t do this without her…” his voice got higher in pitch the more he spoke, his throat trying to give out from the emotions.
“Hey, hey! It’s okay! You’ve been doing great on your own, old man! I can help! Maybe.”
“I know, but I need her help with this— this stuff. She always corrects me if I’m wrong.” Five looked down at his notebook, a stray tear falling onto the page. “Eugh— hey, look at me Five. You’ll be mad later if you get your notebook soggy with tears.” Five glanced at him, his eyes big and shiny. The definition of a puppy.
His heart broke a little more.
“let’s go to the couch, okay? Tell me about her.” Klaus helped Five to the couch, letting him fall onto the uncomfortable cushions. “What does she look like, hm?”
“She’s pretty. Always telling me to do things for myself.” the boy smiled, “She’d make me drink water when I forgot, or go to sleep when it gets late, and she’d help me think when I couldn’t.”
“Yeah? How’d you guys meet?” Klaus had questions, and an opportunity to ask them. He understood he was taking advantage of Five, but he could also argue that the kid needed to get her off his chest.
“I found her in the rubble. Her hand was sticking out. I remember it, her skin was clean, and I could still see the color of her skin, unlike every other body I’d found,” he stared into space, lost in his memories, “All torn up, and covered in ash. Everyone I found was gray, down to the clothing and the eyes— It got in their eyes somehow. I don’t even know if it was ash or smoke or—”
“Five.” Klaus interrupted, fighting the way his own eyes burnt with forming tears. He couldn’t stop thinking about the things Five had gone through. All of this and Delores too. Thirty years together just for her to die. He didn’t even know if she died, but either way, Five didn’t bring her back with him.
“We don’t have to talk about this.”
“I want to.”
They stared at each other, doubt filling the face of one, and confidence but also undermined fear in the other. “Delores was blonde. Her hair was wavy and stopped at her shoulders. She always wears this one blouse, blue and white. The dots were blue, it was a nice texture blouse, thin, but kind of scratchy. She always wears these fun-colored blouses. I’m always the one getting them for her though.”
Klaus nodded, resting his elbow on the back of the couch, confused by the way Five kept switching between talking about her in present and past tense. “Was she not able to get them herself?”
“She couldn’t move.”
Klaus’s head started to hurt a little. He voiced out his confusion.
“She doesn’t have legs. Couldn’t move even if she did have them, though.”
Klaus was incredibly confused. Did Delores have some kind of disorder that debilitated her movement? Did she lose her legs in the apocalypse? How did she survive that? Did she survive that?
“Why not...?”
Five stared at him, irritation starting to cloud in his eyes, before it was replaced with a pleading look, “Can you go get her for me? Please.”
“Five, bud, I can’t. She’s not with us anymore.” Yikes. Klaus was just assuming she died at this point, he supposed. He shouldn’t have said that. Guilt started to eat at him as he scrunched his face, ready to apologize, or be on the end of some brutal vicious attack from a thirteen-year-old shaped senior citizen.
Now it was Five’s turn to be confused, it seemed.
Before the two could continue chatting, the floor of the kitchen creaked. Looking over, Klaus made eye contact with Diego and Luther. The two paused, faces furrowing, cautiously taking in Five’s appearance and Klaus’s sympathetic look.
“Oh, thank God! Please help.” he hoped he wouldn’t get brutally smashed into a wall for admitting the truth, “He ate my weed brownies!” He brought his hands to his head, aimlessly waving them around.
“What!?” Luther ran over, Diego cackling as he too made his way to the couch. “Dude, are you serious?” Diego couldn’t help the way his eyes watered from his own grin, clearly finding humor in this.
“Hi, Diego.” Five smiled as he ignored Luther’s attempts to talk to him.
Klaus could tell by the way Diego’s face dropped that he also felt that caring nature begin to form. It was contagious, apparently. “Hey, man.” Diego was awkward anyway, all things considered.
Klaus knew that he should do the right thing and get Five checked out by Mom now that there were more people here to play sensible adult, but he still had questions, and a serious lack of answers.
He at the least wished to know what happened to this mystery woman. He looked at the other two men.
“Hey guys, who’s Delores?” He whispered to them, trying to lighten his face to make the situation seem lighter than it previously was. He still felt pitiful and upset from the conversation he had with Five.
Everything was quiet for a minute.
Diego itched at his forehead, “Five’s wife, I guess.”
Klaus gaped, “He told you about her?”
“We met her.” Luther raised his eyebrows, thinning his lips in a slightly concerned smile.
Klaus’s mouth fell open just as much as it still could. “Isn’t she…? Y’know?”
“A mannequin? Yeah, I know. Weird shit.”
Wait, what? Klaus seriously needed to get high as of right now. Were they talking about the same people?
“No, no, he met her in the apocalypse, they were in love!” Klaus watched Five giggle at that.
“Yeah. A mannequin, man. That he found in the apocalypse.” Diego shook his head a little, not wanting to have to think about such a topic. He too, found it extremely worrying if he dived into the subject.
Klaus had no clue what to say. He found it kind of humorous and relieving that Five never actually had to deal with the death of his only companion, but also extremely concerning that his companion was a mannequin. A mannequin! There must’ve been a lot of miscommunications going around this morning.
Not only that, but looking back, Klaus realized that Five spoke of her as if she were a real person. That was concerning.
“I just wanted her help with equations.” Five huffed, eyes un-focusing as he shut them, exhaustion taking over.
“Oh. Oh, what the shit!" He nervously giggled, "I feel betrayed. I felt bad for you Five!” Klaus was practically speaking to a brick wall now. Five was down for the count.
“Let’s get him to Mom.” Luther picked the boy up, the others following behind.
Later that day, Klaus found himself in Five’s room, feeling embarrassed as he stared at Delores. The mannequin. Ben laughed at him for days after the incident, and Five never brought it back up, other than yelling at Klaus for almost being the one to cause the apocalypse due to the brownies taking away an entire day he could’ve used to work.
All in all, Klaus learnt that this family needed serious counseling, and much better communication skills.
Worst of all, and despite everything, Klaus also learnt that Five's relationship with Delores was probably the healthiest relationship that's occurred in their family, mannequin or not, and that was saying something.

Umbrella academy s4 ramble spoilers!!
Huge ramble ahread for the characters and just general thoughts
Not loads to say about some of the characters but plenty about the rest
Also I’ve never read the comics, but have seen that this season may reference a few, so there’s a good chance I’ve miss understood stuff.
Oh! The whole five and Lila thing didn’t actually happen you know? You just remember it from a different timeline not this one dw it’s all good.
But seriously, if the ending was like the first three seasons where they stop the apocalypse but this time for good, if they somehow completely got rid of the Marigold and the Durango, i wouldn’t be mad at the repetition because I had really hoped for the cliché of super happy normal ending. With them all among family, friends, new faces, the lot.
I actually didn’t mind seeing the handler, hazel and Agnes if they weren’t secret agents, could’ve been interesting. Even though they might not be all been from the same point in time but what ever. Happy ending am I right?
Five
I know five is quite a common aro/ace icon, and I really like it aswell. But if this ^ were the actual ending and he didn’t have to worry about any upcoming apocalyptic events, no taking care of his super powered family, no being stuck in the past/future/alternate timelines, I honestly wouldn’t have minded if we got a quick shot of him bumping into someone new or even him seeing or working with someone who reminded him of Delores. Would’ve been good for him to meet someone who helped to keep him grounded and relaxed. And he might’ve gotten a more civilian job. If given the chance to not worry about extraordinary stuff at least. I think he only went to the cia because something was up.
I don’t really get how quick he was to give up on his family when (no matter how rude or how much he insulted them) his family were what kept him pushing forward and were, arguably, what he came back for in s1. I also know he had no real life person in the first apocalypse, was stuck there and didn’t have the leisure or timeline hopping to suit his fancy, and wasn’t desperate to get back to his family by any means and HAVING to adapt, and didn’t have someone with him who’s also been through some serious shit. But. Really??? I’m fine with being corrected if I’m wrong and I can’t write stories or characters at all, but it just felt so out of character.
They didn’t even show them growing closer by talking about their experiences or feelings or thought of what to do or the current situation. It felt like attraction by proximity. Like hey you’re a girl I’m a boy wink wink. It would been a bit more believable to an extent if they showed a tad bit of communication not a fucking shave. But I know there were less episodes. Actually no because if there were more there’s a chance it would’ve meant more of those types is scenes :(
Also where the fuck did the book come from what
Luther
Ok so Sloane. His wife. Gone.
He briefly mentions her but like she’s a good friend who’s living far away in a different country or something like “aw man she would love this :D” my guy she might be dead or non existent wtf 😭
The stripper thing made me laugh but after thinking for like two seconds why was that his job? I hate to sound rude and I’m not trying to shame the job or occupation but surely he’d be clever enough to get a good job somewhere or at least something higher up the strip pole than legs and eggs. It’s so confusing because literally none of the characters talk about the past 6 years! A lot is given in context or is shown on screen or snippets on conversations. But much less than previous seasons.
But I love how he’s still trying to be kind and include people. Season 4 won’t make me hate Luther I just hate how they treated him I suppose :/
Also the actor slipped up a lot with his American accent. More so than previously. Didn’t bother me tbh I found it quite funny
Lila
Biggest thing is the her and five thing. I dead ass thought it was over when she was laughing explaining to Diego “no lol that was five he was disguised I don’t love him” Why were they hinted at before the subway bit? Thought they were the “apocalyptic brother sister duo who’ve both been through some shit and know each other quite well despite them being snarky and rude to one another”
I wasn’t minding her wanting a break from normality because like 90% of her life was fighting, the audience would connect the dots on her missing something she’s always done. But I wasn’t a huge fan of the reasons of her and Diego bickering. And when they send the kids away neither of them cared in the slightest. Allison in S1 ONLY thought of Claire and what was best. Hell if Claire had a cold or was a bit too tired she’s be there in a heartbeat fuck the apocalypse Claire needs her.
Parents aren’t the same and even think and do things for their kids differently I get it. But you could tell Allison was a mother in S1 despite hardly seeing Claire on screen but Diego and Lila?? I’m sorry if I missed it but unless they were literally holding their kids hand or picking them up you would barely be able to tell they’re parents. Might just be me but surely they’d be more concerned or bring them up in a better light? Correct me if I’m wrong I really want to be
Diego
Similar thing to Lila really. His reaction to five and Lila was me. what was happening. Him as a dad was quite sweet and him trying to be the best he could was good for him and great for his character but again there were just odd bits that felt out of place or a bit too open ended
Victor
Mvp. Didn’t cause the apocalypse, was there for his family when he could and is a sweetpea. I’m massively biased but to be fair there isn’t much to judge, his arc wasn’t as wide or tall as others. Was more of a direct line. Felt good to see him shout at hargreeves about how he’s more than a background teammate and just wanted to be seen. I liked the writing for him. Didn’t go far tho I guess
Wasn’t a fig fan of the no explanation of the he’s dated all the women lol he’s single. Like wtf give a bit more context does he struggle? Does he just have bad taste or were the writers just looking for a quick joke i’m not supposed to look into?? Who knows
Klaus
Sorry but do the writers hate him so much that they give him this whole ass storyline that vaguely stemmed from the main but then fucked off to nowhere and he then just hopped back in in time to see a love triangle with two brothers and an in law. It felt like recycling the whole junkie getting a fix and being rescued thing again. Seeing him being so protective of Claire and wearing a helmet in a car was too much he’s such a softie for his family. I still love his character but would’ve liked a bit more development after the marigold thing and living ‘mortal’ for 6 years :(
Ben
I might be the only one but the whole “anti” marigold was super interesting, but poorly executed I thought. Wasn’t big on him and Jennifer falling for each other right away but eh it’s media they need romance.
Him being infected/over taken by the Durango wasn’t the worst part in my opinion and could been a really good opportunity for character building or maybe like a fate/destiny and he’s also linked to apocalypses like his siblings. Or given they’re opposites or cause bad things when together could’ve been foreshadowed by all the umbrellas being together causing stuff maybe.
The offhanded comment about him having tentacles and her being cut out of a squid was just daft. What the fuck were we supposed to think. “Wait YOU have shoes?? I have feet!! CLEARLY we’re destined to be together 🥺” I really didn’t care for it and we never got told why she was in a fucking squid or that big box. Or hell why Ben got shot by his dad. It WAS explained but seriously? I thought it was hinted at him being too powerful or potentially self destructive to the point of getting killed by accident, not opening a crate. This would’ve linked so much better to him being foreshadowed at being LITERALLY self destructive or dangerous with Jennifer and the Durango
Jennifer
Why was she in a box? How did they find out about the Durango if she didn’t cause a cleanse? If we’re taking it at face value, SOMEONE knew that Durango+Marigold=big fuck off apocalypse.
Whether it’s Reginald or someone else, was it though tests? If it was and they tested on her or someone else with Durango then what happened to them? If they died it would’ve been from the cleanse no? If not then that means that Reginald or someone else found a way to stop the cleanse. If that’s true, how come it wasn’t possible this time? If it’s not possible to stop the cleanse, then how did they know what a cleanse was? So confused it’s not been properly thought out or it’s too open ended even thinking about it for 5 mins
Could’ve been a really good storyline, I didn’t mind her and Ben but again what’s with the instant romance and we must be together. This is probably a me thing so I’ll park this thought here
Reginald/Abigail
What were they there for? Viktor got to shout at him but I was super underwhelmed by them both when Abigail was hyped up and revealed and the ONLY a thing that referenced her being on the moon or her sudden appearance was “thanks for looking after me Luther” “uhh yeah sure that’s ok” I’m just shell shocked they were so well written into the show and had shit all to do. And for some reason Abigail can skin and wear people??? Hello????? Never brought up or the alien thing or robo regi. Yeh just leave it not like I wanted answers who tf want that from a question
Diego/Lila/Five
I’ve said this, but man fuck that. I hate love triangles with a burning passion it’s so “girl can’t choose between basic and average” and with a brother a brother and a sister in law? Even if it wasn’t a woman with two men and it was literally any other combination of sex/gender it’s fucking messy and puts strain on the most precious things people have. And five and Lila didn’t pull away like “no this is wrong I’m married/I have kids/you’re my sister/brother in law.” It’s just a wet blanket on top of this season. And five teleporting them because Lila grabbed him and said “I need you to” holy shit I need men in black to make me forget that. It wasn’t good :(
Overall the general marigold/durango thing could’ve worked. Repeating myself but it was poor excecution. No hate to the people who weren’t writers there were some excellent shots and cinematography in this season and I liked it a lot. I was nearly able to feel the wind and smell the subway because I was THAT immersed. Brilliant in many many places. The Durango monster thing at the end has real weight to it when moving and I was panicking as it kept growing. Sound design in all 4 seasons in beyond exceptional I adore it. And the sound track. Even though the story was odd the way parts of it were told was very well done and I was on the edge of my seat for a few parts in suspense. Other parts I legitimately skipped through and had to miss the lighting and acting due to the messy fucking love triangle.
Ramble over I’m going to cry then look at fan art to cheer myself up

TUA S4 SPOILERS
I have so many thoughts after finishing it.
yet I feel so empty lmao.
I'm gonna put my disorganised rambles under a read more if anyone is interested and/or wants to scream with me about it
umbrella academy is one of, if not, my favourite show ever made for its storytelling and unique art direction yes, but mainly its characters and their dynamic, like everyone who loves this show.
i love the fluffy sibling relationships and how their trauma affects how they live and behave with one another. everything is built off of the characters!! it's never revolved around love interests unless it made sense and I really loved that. patch (mostly), dave, ray, lila and even Delores tied into the main cast's arcs and pushed the plot forward in a way that I thought was really satisfying and didn't take away too much from the family dynamics that the show focuses on.
so why did they choose these random romantic relationships this season to focus on? I thought the twist about Ben's death was actually great and unexpected personally, (and i loved seeing the kids go out on a mission; i always wanted more flashbacks to their childhood) but to boil it down to a virus that made him fall in love with someone he just met? that's so boring and so unlike anything they've done before imo!
also what happened to sloane lmao. I know basically nothing about behind the scenes stuff but what was the point of having her and Luther get together last season if they had no plans, I'm guessing they must have and the actress didn't come back?
and I feel like hargreeves' grand plan that caused everything in this show to happen feels so anticlimactic now. I mean I guess it literally meant nothing now. this feels like life is strange all over again but worse lol.
Klaus! thank god he exists in this series. what a breath of fresh air any time he was on screen. i never thought i'd be so relieved they threw him into another side quest lmao thank god he wasnt burdened by the main plot too much. I don't mean to say I'm completely happy with what they did with him, they started this arc of like, not letting his powers define him and finish his transformation that he's been continuously going through since s1, but because the show ends with everyone killing themselves it just kind of fizzles out? still love him and his careless whimsy, i thought the way he got his powers back and the scene following it was really good. as always wish they explored it moreeeeeee ughhhhh. Omg they never did anything more with the void or God either. I loved that stuff :(((((((((((
I cant even think about the five and lila stuff without getting mad so I'm just gonna say: fuck you for that. what the fuck were you thinking. why. why. why. in my head five is aroace and moves on with his life, maybe takes up golfing idk. who cares. anything else. HE LITERALLY SAID "I WANNA FUCKING KILL HIM" ABOUT DIEGO IN THE LAST EPISODE?!?!?!?!? and he hid the way home to her children from her for months???? I like the very end of the plotline where it explained founder five, very Loki, but that could have been accomplished without the 7 year romance...............
I think the 6 year time jump reallllyyyyy did not help this season at all. it just led to all the conflict with Allison being resolved instantly and her only story being the one klaus is living with. also wtf was going on with her powers why did they just give her telekinesis thats way more boring than her rumours! I like the tiny bits we got with klaus and allison but it was so short! with the time jump we missed so much development, most of them feel like completely different characters for no real reason. the only thing we know about luther is that he became a stripper, and viktor owns a bar in canada i guess??? these guys were most of the main plot in season 1 and they were so one dimentional this season. i feel like we barely got to get to know Claire or Diego and lilas kids which would be fine if the rest of the plot going on with the other characters was good and engaging, which i felt it wasn't. I don't even know the kids names apart from Grace, which is very cute ill give them that.
The show ended with the main cast doing a group suicide. ceasing to exist. none of them getting to heal.
I'm sorry I don't want to be a hater and I really do hope that some people loved this season but im just so sad lol. i liked the first couple eps and I really love these characters, judging by twitter I'm not alone in my disappointment though lmao. what was the potential s5 gonna look like?!?!?
I loved klaus and Allison a lot and we got little snippets of greatness, I want a spinoff of them now!!!!!!!
I'm excited to hear other people's opinions, maybe I'll see other perspectives and feel a little better haha.

Everyone else is in white.
"Five what do you think?"
A younger you smiles at the boy holding up a flower crown you had made from the few remaining plants in the world.
"It's nice. Brings out your eyes."
You frown at him as you watch him put one of your dresses you found on Delores.
"You're not even looking..."
Five turns towards you looking at your flower crown before returning his attention back to what he was doing.
"It's nice. Brings out your eyes."
You shake your head with a smile on your face, rolling your eyes at his statement.
"What am I going to do with you?"
Five shrugs as you walk and sit next to him, placing the crown on his head. He side eyes you and you give a smile in return.
You two sit in silence for a moment, you study his face as he starts to fix your Delores' dress. You move a strand of hair from in front of his eyes, your hand lingers and Five lets your hand rest near his ear for a moment before removing it.
"Tell me a story, Five."
Five's brows scrunch together.
"About?"
"Anything."
You lay down on the ground placing your head into your hands, giving him your full attention.
"Once upon a time there lived a mermaid princess."
You glare at him, raising your hand to stop him from continuing.
"Stop. That's not what I meant."
"Then what do you want."
You roll your eyes at him in frustration, he glares at you in return. You might be able to peel in his mind when he has his guard down but he sure as hell couldn't read yours.
"Tell me something about you."
"Like what?"
"Anything!!"
You open your arms in a big gesture which causes Five to roll his eyes.
"Fine. About a few years ago when I turned 13..."

"Nietzsche once said, Man is as a rope stretched between the animal and the superhuman."
Our dad had us lined up against the wall, something he would do everyday always reading us a page from his book. Well he would tell us to wait under the stairs but Number 1 and 2 deemed it fair for everyone to start at the wall.
"A rope over the abyss. It is a dangerous crossing, a dangerous looking back, a dangerous trembling and halting."
He would always have Number 7 with him watching us. Something twisted he did to remind her that she was nothing like us. She would stand at his side as he wrote down information in his book about us as if we were his test subjects than his children.
That day was like any other, Number 7 blew her whistle and we all raced up the stairs.
"As much as you must strive for individual greatness, and strive you must, for it won't come to you of its own accord..."
Number 1 and 2 fought for first place like they always did, usually I would stay behind and chat with my brothers Number 4 and 6 but I had been working on my jumps and wanted to prove that I had gotten better.
"That there is no individual stronger than the collective."
I jumped in front of them instantly gaining the lead much to the annoyance of 1 and 2. I didn't care how upset they were I wanted to prove I was better. I don't know why, maybe it was the fact that our father put us in competition every day.
"That's not fair, Five's cheating!"
"He adapted."
It was nice to finally get some words of accomplishment from him even if it wasn't directly said to me. I won that day, though not all of my siblings were happy for me.
"The ties that bind you together make you stronger than you are alone."
That was the day I also got my tattoo. My siblings and I were nervous about it.
"They will make you impervious to the pain and hardship the world will thrust upon you."
It was a painful process though none of us wanted to show it. Number 2 basically pushed our Mom away to prove to Dad that he could handle it. Number 3 cried after, our brother Number 4 tried to comfort her.
What about Number 7? Well she drew hers on.
"And believe me when I tell you, life will be hard. It will be painful."
-
"Give me your best impression of your father."
You laugh as Five uses one hand to make a circle around his eye, he sends you a playful smile before making the most over the top frown on his face. He clears his throat before speaking the most proper accent.
"You might be born with powers but there's a difference between special and extraordinary. And you are neither."
"That accent."
Five eyes you mischievously before lying down next to you.
"It's obnoxious, I know."
You send him a sympathetic smile as he looks at the darkening sky.
"Did he really say that to you?"
He shrugs with a blank face trying to hide any emotion from seeping through.
"Number 7 had it worse than any of us. He made her a special example because she was the only one without powers. She had to hear that statement everyday. And from the looks of it things didn't get better according to her book."
You thought Five's impression was funny, the words though not so much. And by the look in his eyes you could see that in some capacity he might have actually believed those words his father told them.
You turn your body in the direction of Five before placing your hand on his cheek and turning his face towards you.
"I think you're extraordinary, Five Hargreeves."
Five looks into your eyes, looking for any signs of deceit but he couldn't find any. He smiles at you before grabbing your hand that was laid on his cheek..
⌛⌛⌛⌛ Violence in 321⌛⌛⌛⌛
Back at Griddy's,
Five knocks on the glass gaining the attention of the one of the Temps, he teleports as their finger pushes down on the trigger causing them to shoot at the glass. Five watches from the shadows and breaks a mop that sat beside him before teleporting next to the agent at the door and stabbing them in the side.
Five teleports behind another agent; who was distracted by the death of his coworker, Five uses his tie to choke the man to death. Another agent tries to sneak up on him only to get stabbed with a pencil in the dick, Five throws a plate at another agent with enough force that makes him crash into a wall before turning his attention back to the one in front of him and using the same pencil to stab the agent in the eye.
Five watches as two other agents turn towards him with their guns raised. He teleports out of the way causing the two to shoot each other to death.
Five looks down at the bloody and bruised bodies around him with a sadistic smile on his face, his uniform drenched in their blood, he walks up to the agent he choked out and grabs his tie, tying it around his neck. He turned his head to where he heard breathing and slowly walked up to the now maskless agent before snapping his neck.
He felt proud, like he somehow gave you a little bit of justice, He knew he couldn't save you; he didn't have a way back to the commission office but at least he felt like he could do this for you.
Five lets out a breathe before walking up to the counter and using a knife to cut into his skin not noticing cars pulling up in the parking lot behind him. He pulls out the tracker before walking outside and tosses it into the sewer.
Agents come out of their cars and surround him again.
Five sighs before taking his tie from around his neck and tying it around his wounded arm.
"Give me a fucking break."
One of the agents walks forward while the rest backup, taking cover behind their cars.
"It isn't standard protocol of the Temps Aeternalis to make such a spectacle."
Five crosses his arms, a dark glare making its way on his face.
"All of your corpses scattered in the store and around the parking lot isn't going to be 'discrete'.
The agent removes his mask.
"We don't want any trouble, Number 5. We just want you to come back and finish the job."
"That's unfortunate, because I am no longer in the practice of doing anything anyone wants me to do."
Five turns to walk away but the agent points his gun into the back of Five's head.
"Most unfortunate. Because my supervisors see you as a valuable asset to the commission."
The agent's hand shakes a little at the thought of taking the life of the person who they were explicitly told not to kill under in circumstances but if he wouldn't come willingly...
"An expensive acquisition, and a prize worth hunting until it has been captured..."
The agent lets out a breath before straightening their poster.
"Or killed."
"Well aren't you a bunch of tigers..."
The agent looks at him, confused.
"So hungry, so poised... All sharp teeth and swagger."
Five studies his surroundings as he speaks to the agent.
"A tiger shows a hundred stripes, but I know it has more than that. A tiger hides them. Do you know where it keeps them?"
"No-"
"Here's a hint."
Five teleports onto his shoulders and sticks his thumbs into his eyes, so deep that his blood comes out.
"Forget about the mission, Kill him!!"
Another agent yells out causing the others to shoot at the direction of the two men however Five already teleported by then causing them to shoot at the cars instead making them catch fire.
Five grabs a gun from the one of the car trunks as the cars start to blow up one by one killing the agents beside them.
"Get to cover!!"
Five's blood covered finger pushes down on the trigger, shooting some of the agents that tried to run.
He continues to teleport around gaining more agents attention and laughing as they keep blowing up more and more cars, killing their own members.
"Fast. Too Fast."
Five lands on the ground with the gun in his hand, burning bodies and cars surrounded the outside of Griddy's.
"I am in the jungle and I am too fast for you."
Five watches as one of the agents tries to crawl away.
"You have teeth and stripes and things that tear."
Five reloads the gun.
"But I am much too fast. You want my flesh, but you don't know where the jungle is...only I know where the jungle is...only I know."
Five shoots the agent in the head.
"I am a gazelle. I will always be faster than you."
Five lets out a satisfied laugh but that soon stops at the sound of static.
"W-we need them now...T-target confirmed in this area..."
Five teleports to where the voice was coming from.
"P-please send help..."
Five shoots the guy dead and let's out a sigh before static fills his ears again.
"Mission control dispatching Hazel and ChaCha..."
Five's eyes widened in fear.
"God dammit.."
💼💼💼💼💼💼💼💼💼💼💼💼💼💼
"Handler, Handler!!"
The Handler looked up from her desk in the direction of the panicked Agent that walked into the room.
"Unless this is about the two traitors, I don't want to hear it."
"It is ma'am. Five was last located at Griddy's, a call came in confirming the location before the line went dead. But it seems Five has somehow taken his tracking device out."
The Handler squeezes her fist tightly at the agent's words.
"Yes, Yes. I am aware. Any Idea where he is now?"
The agent shakes their head with a slight frown on their face.
"No Ma'am. Nothing recent."
"So he's missing..."
The agent nods.
"Yes Ma'am."
"And the other one?"
The agent looks down at the clipboard in their hands.
"Looks like she's in a different timeline. I've already made preparations to send agents after her."
"I've already sent the Hazels and ChaChas on this mission."
The agent's face paled at her words. The Hazels and ChaChas were good at their jobs, great even but three of the four were sick. They'd do anything to complete a mission. Anything.
"B-But I thought you wanted them back alive..."
The Handler stands up looking the agent dead in the eye.
"I told them to beat Five up a little if they have to but I need him alive. Do what they will with the other one."
The agent lets out a little gulp and nods nervously before leaving the room.
🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧
You ducked into a theater with your hands covering your ears as the sounds of gunfire sounded in the air.
As soon as you left the commission building, you used the suitcase to bring you to the past. You remembered Five mentioning the day the apocalypse happened from some newspaper he found. You weren't there when it happened since you were dealing with your own issues under water but you took his word for it.
Not even an hour into leaving the commission office, did you encounter the sound of maniacal laughter. Hazel and ChaCha.
Luckily from the quick glance you got of them before ducking behind a seat, it seemed like it was only two of them which relieved you a little bit until you realized you had the blood thirsty ones on your trail.
"Y/N come out, come out, wherever you are."
"Fuck me...."
You whispered to yourself as you looked over the seats to see how far they were. Their pink and blue masks seemed like they were mocking you as they got closer and closer to your area.
"How'd they even..."
Duck back down and looked at your arm.
"Shit..."
The gun shots stopped for a second and you looked up to see what they were doing. The two men in masks were looking down at the tracking device in Chacha's hand before looking in the direction of where you hid. You quickly ducked back down, since the other people that were around started shooting in your direction. Catching the attention of Hazel and ChaCha.
You couldn't see them but in that moment you felt extreme terror. How were you going to get out of this?
You closed your eyes trying to think of a way to get yourself out of this situation.
You could use your siren voice but there was no way of knowing if they were wearing headphones under those masks.
Not to mention there was already so much going on in that moment. Bullets rain in the air, trying to hit whatever they could make contact with while a blinding white light burned your eyes as you tried to take a look at the commotion that was also happening behind you.
You pulled out a pocket knife that Johnny had slipped into your pocket. You winced as you cut deep into your arm before sticking your fingers in to pull out the tracker that was in there.
"Fuck!"
You didn't have too much time to worry about your wound because a voice started to yell above the commotion. You turned in the direction of the entrance to find a guy dressed in a red and white shirt, dark jeans and a green vest hopping over the stairs case. His hair was messy and he had dark makeup around his eyes, he looked about your age well... younger.
You started to panic as the agents turned their guns towards him. You rushed over; suitcase in hand, without even thinking and pulled the guy down and covered him with your arms as the guns fired off again.
You looked at the dude and checked for any injuries before looking over the seats again after finding none. Your eyes widened as you found the familiar face of a twenty year old Five hopping on the back of one of the agents and moving his gun to where he ended up shooting his own partners that were close by.
You're blinded again as the guy beside you, hands start to glow a similar shade of blue to Five's. Then you realize who this could be, a small smile makes its way on your face. One of Five's brothers that he'd always talk about. You were finally able to meet one though you wished it was under better circumstances.
He stands up and spreads his hands, the next thing you know all the agents are being thrown around or killed. You looked at him in amazement, this could only be Klaus. Five told you about his siblings powers but to actually see it in action.
"Wow. You're amazing."
The guy you assumed was Klaus smiled at your reaction and gave you a bashful look.
"Thank you. It was nothing."
Unknowingly to you, his ghost brother beside him let out a sigh as he continues to tear the other agents apart.
"Really Klaus?"
Your attention is pulled again ChaCha walks in, This was the female ChaCha, unlike her counterpart who was now making eye contact with her, she didn't have her mask.
She looks taken back at the sight of the other two before recognition filled her eyes.
"She's here?"
ChaCha nods at her.
"She is."
Five takes cover in the seats closest to watching as his brother uses his powers to conjure the other. His attention quickly shifts to you and his eyes filled with happiness and relief.
He teleports behind you and you jump as he places his hands on your shoulders taking your attention away from the brother in front of you.
Your eyes start to water as you face him, he sends you a small grin before pulling you into a hug. For you it might have only been two or three days but Five had eight long days without you. Tears fill his eyes at the warmth of your body against his, yours had already started to fall as you pulled him against you tighter. If it was one thing you two could admit, it's that being without the other was like hell.
You breathe in his scent before pulling back and placing your hands on his cheeks. You watch as his grin turns into a wide smile, one that showed off his dimples, tears of relief falling down his face. You pull his face closer to yours before giving him a lot of kisses around his face getting a genuine laugh from him. After you finish, he places his forehead against yours.
"I missed you."
He looks deep into your eyes.
"So m-much."
You pull him into another hug which causes him to whimper.
"But you can't stay here."
You pull your head back to look at him with questioning eyes.
"I need you to go back a few days.''
"Back?"
Five nods.
"I need you to find me and tell me it's Vanya."
Your eyes squint in confusion not processing what he meant.
"Do you understand?"
You shake your head.
"I just found you."
Five messes with the suitcase before handing it to you.
"I need you to understand."
You shake your head, not wanting to say goodbye.
"Please..."
You looked into his eyes and knew he wasn't going to change his mind on this one. You nodded with a sad look in your eye.
"Don't look at me like that."
Five frowns as he rubs your cheek with his thumb.
"You'll find me again."
You take a deep breath before giving him a nod of assurance.
"I won't let you down."
"I know you won't."
⌛🎻⌛🎻⌛🎻⌛🎻⌛🎻⌛🎻⌛🎻
Vanya walks down the hall to her apartment with a look of disgust on her face. The meeting she went to was distrubing to say the least. She had gone to the theatre where the person on the phone said he would be and discovered an orchestra there though the atmosphere didn't feel right. It felt more like a cult and at the head of it was the conductor.
He had forced her to play a song to show off her skill before telling her of a piece he wrote. He called it, 'The Apocalypse Suite.'
Vanya thought it was a waste of time and turned to leave with him taunting her as she did. It all felt like some type of sick joke.
Vanya took a breath to calm her nerves before unlocking her door and stepping inside. She jumped in fright when the lamp on the other side of the room lit up to reveal Five sitting on the couch, one leg crossed over the other.
"Jesus!"
"You should really have locks on your windows."
Vanya looked at him confused as she placed her keys down and turned to lock the door.
"I live on the second floor."
He gave her the most blank stare.
"Rapists can climb."
There was a beat of silence.
"You are so weird."
Five studies her as she sits on the couch. Vanya nervously rubs her hands against her pants before giving him a concerned look.
"Is that blood?"
Five slightly glances at his collar and soothes himself by rubbing his fingers together.
"It's nothing."
Vanya looks at him like she doesn't buy it but there was no use trying to get any answers from him, she learnt that from her father.
"Why are you here?"
Five pauses a moment to think about what he wanted to say.
"I've decided you're the only one I can trust."
"Why me?"
"Because you're ordinary."
Five watches as a crestfallen look befalls her face. He backtracks after he realizes that was the wrong thing to say.
"Because you'll listen."
Vanya gets up and goes into the bathroom to get things to help heal his self inflicted wound. She winces as he reveals it before cleaning it.
Five talks to her about the future, he eyes glaze over as he remembers the wreckage he found, the flames that surrounded the city, the lifeless bodies. Everything a thirteen year old boy shouldn't have witnessed.
As Five opens up to her about what he saw and how he felt, Vanya begins to look at him sceptically.

think about this (I AM THINKING ABOUT THIS SO HARD)
Tumblr media
in klive context (especially with your find your way home series in mind)
ahahaha. Gonna admit this is tough on me, because I DO ship Five/Lila, and I have basically from the moment she showed up...but any time I try to think of scenarios for potential fic, my brain just NOPES out because Klive is OTP, and I can't stand the thought of Five without his Klaus. (which is why I eventually was like okay, Klaus/Five/Lila...and then because I felt sad leaving Diego out, and because I ship Klaus/Diego and Five/Diego, my brain went WHY NOT ALL FOUR?!)
Let's be clear about a few things though! If this were an established Klive scenario, Five wouldn't have stopped for a second. He probably would've died pretty fast if not for Lila forcing a slowdown, because he would not pause to eat or sleep or drink and he'd get sloppy and delirious fast. This is supposing he'd end up on that subway without Klaus in the first place, though, which would have *never* happened. He wouldn't have allowed Klaus to get shot, or to run off to who knows where in the middle of an emergency situation, and he wouldn't feel the need to distract Klaus or pass him off to Ribbons the Babysitter. They'd be glued at the hip, so you'd either get all three of them on the subway, or just Klive. (to be clear, if it was all 3 of them, I'm totally down with ot3. Klaus would be such a great buffer in there, being so gentle with them both, comforting them, caring for them *le sigh* If Blackman was going to piss everyone off anyway, why not go for broke with incest 3way lmao! Then you could also do away with the AWFUL pointless Klaus storyline full of unnecessary trauma). All that being said, if he'd been in an established relationship with Klaus and somehow they HADN'T been together in the subway? Yeah, never in a million years would he have cheated on Klaus.
I think for me, the disconnect is that he wants to stay there with her, not that he falls in love with her. I don't have trouble believing that. They're already so alike and there's clear affection and a spark of chemistry there. And I think a lot of people miss that 1.) he'd already 'broken up with' Delores in s1 when he returns her to the store and 2.) he's stuck in another apocalypse scenario, and we know his coping mechanisms. + 3.) she was in an unhappy and unfulfilling marriage and 4.) her aggressive positivity and not speaking about her children is *her* coping mechanism. My poly-minded brain is okay with this. He can love her and Klaus and Delores and whoever. She can love him and Diego and whoever.
And I can even see him needing a break. That's what he told Klaus he wanted in s3 after all. He had a few year's downtime, and then suddenly gets put back in this nightmare situation with no end in sight. He's 70. He's tired of just running and fighting *constantly* It makes sense to want to go someplace safe and comfortable and take a breath.
For me the part that doesn't work is as soon as he finds the book. Like it just doesn't work for his character no matter what. I can see him taking a couple of days to come to terms with the fact he's going to lose Lila, but I don't see it lasting *months* That's where the Klive shipper (and Hargreeves OTSiblings) in me is all hell naw! Not only is it unbelievable that he'd abandon his siblings to the apocalypse (like, sure, wanting to get away from the endless chain of end of the world scenarios, fine, but he'd go bring his family BACK with them, then), but we saw with Delores that he let her go because he knew it was what was right and what she needed. He would *never* keep Lila from her children 5 months longer out of selfishness, knowing her anguish over being apart from them for so long, no matter how much he loves her. In fact, it's because he loves her so much that he wouldn't.
And that's what it comes down to, a fundamental misunderstanding of how Five loves, from the writers. It's an interesting blend of selfishness and selflessness, but no matter the cost to him personally, he'll do what is best for his loved ones.

REDEEMED
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Buckingsim Palace, Buckingsimshire 11:23 AM WST]
[??]: (on the phone) We'll only be gone a week. Anthony is so excited. Thankfully my morning sickness has passed.
Queen Katherine: Have a fun time in Americreek, Lara. I've never been invited to the Academy Awards, so you'll have to tell me all about the celebrities when you return!
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: I should go. I'm only allowed five minutes of fun per day and Uncle Louis' antics this morning took up twenty! (laughs)
Princess Lara: (on the phone) Get back to work, Your Majesty! (laughs)
Queen Katherine: Love you!
Tumblr media
Martin Lavelle [Private Secretary]: Your Majesty. Before your next audience, we need to finalize plans for Garter Day. With three weeks until the ceremony, much is still left unresolved.
Queen Katherine: Why are we so behind?
Tumblr media
Martin [P.S.]: (confused) Your coronation, ma'am.
Queen Katherine: Oh yes! That was just last week. Goodness. So much has happened since.
Martin [P.S.]: Many of the Knights felt snubbed by not being permitted to join the Knights' procession during the coronation.
Tumblr media
Martin [P.S.]: The orders leadership has asked that you restore tradition, by granting full pomp and circumstance for this year's ceremony.
Queen Katherine: (annoyed) Leadership? I am the orders leadership! They should be reminded that I am Sovereign of the Garter. The Monarch alone decides who is appointed and removed.
Tumblr media
Martin [P.S.]: Your Majesty. With this being your first Garter Day since crowning, parliament would approve the additional expenditure.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: Would I still have time to go to Beaverdam beforehand?
Martin [P.S.]: I'm afraid not, ma'am. For a traditional ceremony, you would require an additional three days of rehearsals. Unfortunately, your schedule would not allow for another vacation until the end of July, after Trooping the Colors.
Queen Katherine: (sighs)
Tumblr media
Martin [P.S.]: We also need to talk about Windsor Castle. This is the first year the castle will host Garter Day since renovations began in 2021! The Queen Mother was heavily involved in the luncheon's planning and...
Queen Katherine: Thank you, Martin. As Prince consort, Rainier is more than capable of taking those responsibilities from the Queen Mother.
Martin [P.S.]: Yes! Of course. Yes, Your Majesty.

Lady Sonja [Lady-in-Waiting]: The Women's Foundation sent a letter of thanks for attending their luncheon yesterday, along with a lovely bouquet of flowers.
Delores Bryant [Private Secretary]: How lovely, especially after not having invited you the last two years.
Tumblr media
Delores [P.S.]: It appears the negativity from the scandal has finally been forgotten. Your approval ratings have also improved since the coronation!
Queen Rowena: A new chapter is beginning.
Delores [P.S.]: You endured so much hate over the last three years, and then to lose your husband! No-one understands how much you have truly given to this country, ma'am. I'm glad to see Windenburg showing you the love and respect you deserve again.
(phone rings)
Tumblr media
Delores [P.S.]: Griffin Park, this is Delores.
[??]: (on the phone) Hello. Is this the office of the Queen Mother? This is Sister Angela. I am the aide of Mother LaKisha.
Delores [P.S.]: Yes! Yes, it is. I am the Queen Mother's private secretary. How may I help you, sister?
Tumblr media
Sister Angela: (on the phone) The pope has invited Mother LaKisha to the Vatisim next week and she would love to visit with the Queen Mother during her time in the country.
Delores [P.S.]: The Queen Mother would be honored to host Mother LaKisha. The royal family would be happy to take care of any and all accommodations, not done so by the papal organization.
Sister Angela: (on the phone) Thank you, Delores. I will be in touch.
(call ends)
Tumblr media
Delores [P.S.]: Things really are beginning a new for you!
Queen Rowena: Oh?
Delores [P.S.]: The pope has requested an audience with Mother LaKisha, and she has asked to see you while here! There are rumors she is being awarded the Noble Peace Prize for humanitarisimism.
Tumblr media
Queen Rowena: Mother LaKisha founded a sisterhood that runs 19 homes. She was so close with my dear mother. Shortly after my mother died, Mother LaKisha returned to her home country of Marvania, and has become revered for her work with the poor.
Delores [P.S.]: I didn't know you still kept in contact.
Queen Rowena: I haven't seen her since my mother died.

My favorite Umbrella Academy WIPS ❤️
Lygerside Daydream
(Or the one about hallucinations and a life that never was)
Delores kisses his check. “I missed you.”
Five smiles, taking her smooth hand between his calloused ones. “I never left.”
The conversation dies around them and she laughs, melodic sound surrounding him, echoing like it shouldn’t.
“You always do.”
—--------------------------------------
“Cinque, amore.” She says, wearing her favorite sunhat; the one she almost never uses in fear of wearing it out, the one with a mirriad of flowers that don’t match, the one with flowers he doesn’t remember the name of anymore.
It’s only Delores and him, as it has been for a long time. It feels like forever, sometimes.
Or: there’s something wrong, Five knows, he also knows he would do anything to keep Delores looking at him like that.
—----------------------------------------
There’s this story he heard a long time ago; so long that details twist and shape into something new. There’s this story that changes in every iteration, but the end remains the same.
“Do I know you?” She asks, tilting her head like a bird. “I feel like I know you.”
There’s an answer trapped in his throat, between the larynx and the trachea. She keeps staring, eyes so dark he can't see the pupil and a smile pulling at the corners of her lips. The clock on the wall stops at seven.
The scarf around her head is a nice shade of blue, it reminds Five of–of something; there’s a series of numbers written in chalk on the board, displacement equations she had been working on before he arrived, there’s a wrong decimal. The clock on the wall is stuck at seven.
“I don’t think so.” He finally says.
The smile widens and it should feel mocking, a threat, but instead it’s like coming home. Five smiles back.
“Delores.” She says. He says. The clock ticks again and the room turns black.
.
There’s something that is not quite a man at the bottom of the hill. Man-shaped, earth-teetered, unmoving with its gaze fixed in the gravel sky. Up, up, up where it can never reach, up where time is the same as it has always been.
Its fingers twitch, once, two and thrice, its neck is sore, bruised in a way it doesn’t notice anymore. The gray shifts and time doesn’t forgive, so it takes one step after the other, feet rising from the broken concrete, heavy, breaking the vines threaded into its broken boots, life that clings, uncaring.
It keeps walking.
Capgras Delusion
(or the one where Five returns earlier and tries to find a way to take his siblings from Reginald)
It's a hit or miss if the smoke will offer him comfort or send him into a panic attack, today it seems it's the first one and he exhales.
"He's hurting them," Five says, relying on the script. It’s been two years, they always have this conversation and it always goes the same way.
“Teaching them, Mister Five, powers like yours
"You read the book." Vanya's book, he let him read it under Five's supervision. It's the only reason he hasn't tattled to Reginald.
"I did, Mister Five and I still think that if we offer it to your father--"
"No," he says and this is an usual argument, too "it's alright if you admire him, but don't be blind to the kind of man he is. He will push them harder and this time Ben won't be the only one to die."
He wishes, not for the first time, that he had Allison's power. These inane conversations would be over, then.
"How many of us have to die for you to realize?" Five says, getting off script. But he's tired "How much more suffering will be enough for you?"
Pogo is frustrated, too and Five had been careful of pushing him too far all this time, but he can't sit idle anymore. Not when his siblings are crying every damn night for a man that doesn't give a fuck about them.
He has plans already in case Pogo tattles. In case Reginald knows he's here.
It would be easier if Pogo was on his side, yes, but he can work even if he doesn't.  Five can do it. He has to.
"There's nothing I can do about it, I take care of the children, but--"
"He already made Be–Six kill the rabbits, didn't he?"
Pogo’s face falls and something twists inside Five.
"I have a plan," Five says carefully.
Maggot Pie (heh)
The fucker left them a note in the fridge, which is more than he would’ve left a few months ago, but still–A. Fucking. Note.
If I don’t return at 9, assume I’m dead. (Or look for me, which amounts for the same with the kind of organization this family is capable of) — 5
And then a direction below.
It’s nine and a half already. There’s nobody else at the academy and Diego is only here because there wasn’t any orange juice left in his apartment and he was craving some. That he hasn’t been at the Academy in over a week and seen some of his siblings for longer is unrelated.
He pats his pockets and lets out a sigh of relief when he feels the little portatil phone, --smartphone, according to Luther’s lectures, who took with shiny eyes and disgusting ease the new technology of this timeline– it’s usually a roll of the dice if Diego will remember to take it with him, useful as it is, it’s matter entirely if it’s going to remain unbroken.
He calls Luther first, who the most likely to come back running at the first hint of danger, with the rest of them is a hit or miss. He answers after two rings.
“Return to the Academy now, there’s an emergency.”
He hangs up before Luther can respond.
The thing is–Five is usually good at knowing the kind of danger he will face when he goes out like this; sometimes he takes one of them, one or two times Luther or Viktor, usually Diego, because he’s out kicking ass anyway while the rest want to live peacefully, or as peaceful as a Hargreeves can get. And if he deemed his mission dangerous enough to leave them a direction and an hour–
When Diego finds him, he’s going to fucking kill him. He’s going to make him wish he died in his little errand.
He shakes his head, not useful right now. He’s certain Luther called Allison as soon as Diego hung* up, if he’s not with her already. He calls Viktor next.
“Come to the Academy. Five is missing.”
Then Klaus and it’s actually a miracle when he actually responds.
“Return to the Academy or I will burn your clothes.”
He hangs up before his shierk can leave him deaf. Sometimes different measures must be taken to make them do shit. It’s like herding cats. It’s not that they wouldn’t come for Five, but they do overestimate his capabilities.
Diego, as the one that goes the most with him on these missions to thwart the Commission’s efforts to ‘correct’ the timeline, is intimately aware that he’s far from indestructible, as much as he likes to pretend otherwise.
And, boy, how he likes to pretend.
In between maps of probabilities that make sense to nobody but him and single-minded [...] to razor to the ground his former employers, they’ve been worried about him, or rather, they’ve been worried about how his new obsession could come back to bite them in the ass.
It’s an uncharitable thought, but it’s an uncharitable world and all the Hargreeves are selfish at heart.
For what is worth, Five tried to relax the first days, weeks even, after they arrived to the new 2019, Diego knows, he went out to do who knows what in hilarious grandpa clothes nobody dared to make fun of in fear of him going back to the uniform; he hung out with Klaus, the two of them disappearing for days at time, returning suspiciously giggly, but there was no way Diego was poking at that within a ten foot pole*; he stayed sometimes in Viktor’s apartment and the two little [rascals] were actually getting along again.
And then he holed himself up in his room for three days straight and when he came out it was with the intense look he had when he first arrived at the funeral talking about the future.
He even put on a suit and everything.
There is no way Diego is telling him this, but he misses his little grandpa outfits and his easier smiles and the way he actually talked to them.
Now there’s a note Diego stumbled across on pure chance and him going alone on a mission he was clearly reluctant to go when he could have taken Diego with him. The fucker didn’t even bother
He glances at the clock. Nine and forty.
His leg is bouncing and he considers for a second going to the address alone–but that is the kind of shit that got them in this situation, if Five had just called him, then maybe–
Diego glares at the note with Five’s stupid neat handwriting.
Infections of a different kind
(Which is already posted, but I'm having trouble with) (In this one Five returns earlier too, but commits the mistake of telling his siblings and Reginald about the apocalypse)
Diego wasn’t close to Five, most of them weren’t, not really, that doesn’t mean that his absence didn’t hit them all. It was in the holes in their    and plates of food Mom kept putting for him before Pogo told (programed) her not to.
But he returned and they haven't been allowed to see him for a week.
It’s bullshit, it’s what it is.
“Mom,” he says when she’s putting the covers over him.
Some of his siblings don’t want Mom to tuck them goodnight anymore, but fuck them.
“Yes, dear?”
“Why can’t we see Five?”
She stops for a few seconds, before smiling in “He’s in a very delicate state, it’s important that he gets to rest undisturbed.”
Diego thinks about that for a second, “we can be quiet.”
“I know you can, sweetheart, but your Father prefers that he heals alone. You know he likes to be cautious.”
He scowls, that’s a way to put it, but something about this smells bad.
Diego doesn't know why he pictured him drinking with his father and talking about how bothersome kids are.
He looked rather pathetic the last time they saw him. Really fucked up, he wasn’t even aware a person could be that thin and sickly and still resemble his smug brother, that is less smug and more sad.
And that’s it: Five looks really sad.
Mom cut some of his beard and washed him, so he looks less like a homeless person, but he’s still hard to look at.    and he will never be able to forget his scream, even if he was several rooms apart.
He wants to hit and rip apart something, what the fuck happened to him? He said something about the end of the world and called out for someone called Delores, did someone have him captive or something?
And what are they supposed to do about it when it all happens in the future?
Five isn’t supposed to look like that, he’s supposed to be smug and insufferable. He was his asshol-ish self that first day and okay, the crying and laughing were creepy, but he was getting there again the more time he spended in the infirmary.
But now they moved him out and they haven’t been allowed to see him. Which is utter bull-shit and if Dad thinks he’s going to obey that, he’s got another thing coming for him.
He’s in a room nobody uses, which doesn’t tell him much, considering they use just about a third of them, that’s his intel from the spyed conversations between Pogo and Mom.
“Where are we going?”
Diego doesn’t jump, but he hits his shoulder on the wall anyway.
He glares at Klaus, “you are not going anywhere.”

Top 5 chapters from your fics?
This is such a neat ask, thank you anon. I've been open I'm obsessed with my own writing and reread it constantly, but what are those chapters I come back to over and over again... In no particular order -
Negotiations/No More Negotiations/Try Again (Holding It Together Ch 12, 13, and 14) - I'm not cheating, these three count as one chapter. It's like if you give a mouse a cookie - if I read Negotiations, I have to read the following two with it (side note: I am very pleased with the chapter titles of Negotiations followed by No More Negotiations). I just had so much fun writing AJ and his evil corporate speak, the fight between him and Five, Number's heroics, and, of course, Five getting sushi. I wrote the Five part relatively early on in HIT's existence, and I played with the idea of Number and time travel for months before implementing it because I loved what I had going on between Five and AJ and didn't want to scrap it - and it took me those couple months to figure out that I could have the best of all worlds with added angst thanks to the time travel. Insert here my usual plug that S2 did AJ dirty he slaps so hard as a villain.
Thoughts on Umbrellas (Searching for Good Times Ch 3) - I adore this chapter, both for the fun of world building Five's perfect, fucked up world, and for the back and forth of Allison trying to convince Five of his insane life. It was a fun puzzle to figure out, how Allison could try to use logic to break the HOb's illusion and how Five could (or couldn't) rationalize it. And then, of course, it ends with some of my favorite lines of the fic: She cannot believe she’s forgotten one other very, very important fact about Five and Delores. Five is also Delores. And she’s been focusing on the wrong half of the pair. Delicious.
It Will Be Fine (Joining Together Ch 7) - I've said it before, but this is one of my very favorite things I've ever written. A couple firsts for JT - first chapter with Amanda POV and our first view of Five through the eyes of a peer and in his own space. We get a reminder that Five is a world-class superhero, even when he's drunk off his ass, and that, underneath all his problems, he does care. We get Klaus! I adored writing the sibling dynamic between him and Five. And, over it all, that thin, thin, thin veneer that Things Are Fine that is just crumbling the longer Amanda is there. If you allow me to say so, it's very good.
Numbering Mistake (Part 1) (Joining Together Ch 20) - Can you have a superhero in a story and not have a bank robbery? Yes, but ignore that. I like the slow start to this one, and that both Sarah and Five could have been right about the situation and it's just unfortunate that Five was. Sarah finally understands how the Boy fits in to the puzzle that is Five and the Boy gets to kick some ass. Calling Five "the Boy" for that part of the chapter was a last minute edit - I liked the idea of the effect, the separation for this new side Sarah was seeing, but I was worried it would be obnoxious to read. Neat how it worked! And, of course - dear old Reggie makes his cameo. There's just something about TUA villains that are really fun to write, and Reggie is no exception. He came, he emotionally crippled his son, he left. What a man, what a chapter.
Just Our Luck (Sometimes Age Comes Alone Ch 5) - The chapter I rewrote half the fic for. The original version of the fic was allll Viktor and Five - it went from their talk about the apocalypse straight to Five fixing his age problem. Nice, still hit the same themes, but boy howdy nowhere near as impactful as it got when I thought of this fight. It gives us everything - Five and Diego Time, Sparrow Fight, Time Travel, Five Almost Killing Himself For His Family, and it better sets up for things to come to light and motivation for Five to fix his age problem. Five's panic at Diego's injuries immediately flipping to Diego's panic for Five's injuries and the siblings having to piece together what happened next chapter is so delicious. And a satisfying action sequence, if I do say so myself.
This was so fun, and took me forever to answer because of course I had to reread each chapter as I selected it. I thought for a moment of doing some honorable mention chapters, but then we'd really be here all night.

A Leap Of Faith // Five Hargreeves X Reader (Pt.3)
Some info:  Just an inspo from Demon Slayer (totally irrelevant), “Below the Surface” FNAF(also irrelevant) and of course “The Umbrella Academy” show and comics. Reader and Five are 20 for the sake of being mature content (no smut but violence, alcohol and such). I kinda follow the real plot but also not???? There may be multiple endings so be warned. I’m not new to fanfiction but its been a few years so excuse any mistake or not well written parts. Also, English is not my first language so bear with me for any grammar mistakes. Please enjoy the story!! <3
Words: 1.7k
TRIGGERS: Below story has some harsh language and plot. Read on your own account

5 days until the end
2 days had already passed by so quickly. They had wasted 2 days looking for the owner of that fake eyeball and saving Delores. Y/n was a bit annoyed by it. Annoyed yes, totally not jealous like Klaus said. Why would she be jealous? Because Five was so caring to that doll? The way his eyes sparkled when he looked at her? How he held her? How he spoke to her and about her? There was no way Y/N was jealous. What annoyed her was Fives behavior. Since they got back to their younger bodies he totally ignored her.
“Five you need to eat-“  “I can’t right now. I’m working cant you see?”
“Five, Vanya behaves weird maybe we shou-“ “Not now Y/n…Delores and I are trying to save the world. Not play around with Vanya”
“Five…hey em…Cha-Cha and Hazel killed Diego’s cop friend. We sh-“ “FOR GOD’S SAKE Y/N. Leave me alone! I don’t need you anymore okay? You did your part. Now screw off”
That hit her hard. She knew him. Working 20 plus years with him she knew he was short tempered and a workaholic but this was pushing it. “Fine, if you don’t need me, I’ll handle it on my own.” She only said that but for him it meant nothing. He didn’t even spare her a glance or a thought. He didn’t really believe her. He believed she would be back rubbing his back and offering him a cup of coffee. The next morning came and he didn’t see her or hear anything from her but he didn’t pay too much mind into it. “I guess she’ll finally let me work in peace.”
Meanwhile y/n was looking around with Diego and following the two assassins. Driving an ice cream track was never a good idea but Klaus, who tagged along for some drug money, didn’t really get his hands on anything else. What they didn’t expect is to pass by Five and Luther and the Commissions assassins. Y/N stopped the car and immediately ran to their side. “Y/n where have you been?” Five asked her and grabbed her wrist. She just pulled away not even sparing a glance at him.
An eye for an eye.
Five sighed and looked at Cha-cha as she shot towards Luther but before he could move or do anything everything stopped. He knew what this was or….who it was. He immediately turned to y/n whose face became like a ghost’s. He pulled her behind him when the Handler walked to them. “I’m pretty impressed by your little trick. This body switching really threw the commission off your tracks. You two certainly make great assassins.” She said and clapped her hands. “Too bad it has to end” Five said and took out his gun pointing it straight to her head. “Oh fivey, you never learn. I’m not here to fight you. I’m here to make a deal with you.” She looked at y/n and smirked.” Both of you….I offer you a chance. Work for us again. Not assassins but as management. Great pension, good money and a life of peacefulness and no more killing.” Five squinted his eyes looking at her. “What’s in it for you? Why are you willing to strike a deal with us?” he asked and held y/n close. Her breathing was uneven as she looked at the Handler. Yes, she was like her mother figure but that didn’t erase what she put her through. “My two exceptionally good assassins are out of work. Of course, that makes me worry.” She said and lit up her smoke. “So? Do we have a deal?” she asked and looked at the two of them.
Right at that moment Five turned and looked at y/n. He gave her a small smile. “You have to promise me to things. You’ll do everything you can so that my family survives the apocalypse…and y/n will stay here with them-“ “Five no!” y/n automatically said but the Handler bit her to it “Deal!” she said and shook fives hand immediately disappearing. Time starting moving again and y/n fell to her knees. “You little fucker….” She said and clenched her fist. “I’ll show you what I can do” She said and stood up. She looked around at Cha-Cha and Hazel. “Your fucking suitcase is in your motel room. Go get it. Boys lets go” She looked at Five’s brothers and nodded her head. She helped Diego up since he had hurt his arm and walked to the car.
3 days before the end
A couple days had passed since Five left them in the soon to be destroyed world in order to work for the commission. Y/N as confused. They had gone through so much together and in only a few days he had declared she was useless to him now and he had left her off to die in the apocalypse. The siblings were downstairs trying to find a way to save the world. Luther obsessed with his father and his moon research. Allison debating whether to leave Luther lone or go see her daughter before the end. Klaus close to a relapse and Diego dedicated to lead and try to save the world. A whole mess she didn’t want anything to do with. Y/N left them talk and headed to five’s room. Maybe there she would be able to find an answer. Any answer would do. She didn’t doubt his brain. She knew she wasn’t smart or a great leader or anything worth fighting for but she had to at least try and not disappoint him again. Searching through his walls her brain started to became lost. She was close to giving up. She was debating doing so. “In the end…I couldn’t help it. I couldn’t help five” she thought to herself and sat down at the bed. It was dark in the room as five never liked the daylight. She brought her knees to her chest and closed her eyes. Before she could realize, she drifted to an old place she didn’t want to remember.
.
.
.
“Come on y/n. Don’t disappoint me or you will end up in the chamber again.” The Handler said at the microphone as she looked at y/n through the glass. This was a typical daily training for y/n. Herself locked in a room with a small rabbit. “B-But mother I don’t like killing.” She said as she cried and rubbed her eyes. Her 6 year old self couldn’t handle killing a sweet looking bunny. “I wont repeat myself y/n. Get inside that bunny’s head and kill it!” She said and y/n let out a whimper. She felt herself doze off. Next thing she saw was the poor bunny smashed against the wall. She fell to her knees crying when the Handler walked inside and rubbed her back. “Good job my daughter. I know its hard but you will get better at it.” She said as she looked at the little girl. “M-Mom my heart hurts…I’m in pain” y/n managed to say between her sobs. The handler just smiled. “It’s from the shock my dear. It’ll get better.” One small detail? It didn’t…
As Y/N was growing up so did the animals. The rabbit became a cat, the cat a dog and so on. Until Y/N was 16, that’s when The Handler presented the first human victim to her. Y/N was exhausted. Black circles under her eyes, bony like structure, nightmares every night. “Miss I can’t.” She had stopped calling her mom a long time ago. She had figured that a mother figure or someone who loved you wouldn’t never do this to you. “Y/N! We talked about this. You are ready. Now I don’t think you like the chamber that much do you?” The handler said through the microphone once again. “The chamber….” y/n whispered and swallowed hard. The dark small chamber which scared her for life. She took a deep breath too calm her trembling body. The cries and begs of the man opposite of her annoying her to the point she couldn’t focus. “He needs to shut up” she whispered and closed her eyes dozing off. Her mind wandered away. To a place where her and her sister Lila were innocent. A place where they fell in love, played, danced and had fun. A smile came to her face despite what was actually happening in the room. The man’s face got the exact same smile as her only for him to be crying and begging to be spared. Slowly his hands reached for the knife next to him and he forcefully opened his mouth cutting off his tongue. Y/N’s face turned into a painful one as The Handler looked at the result satisfied. Next thing she knew the man broke his neck falling down before y/n snapped out of it. She put her hand on her chest in pain breathing heavily. “We need to work on your control my little y/n. You need to be aware of what you do to them. I know every death is like a suicide to you but you have to snap out of it and realize you are not the one dying” The Handler said as she unlocked the door. “You are free to rest. Gloria will bring you some food later.” Y/N weakly stood up looking anywhere but the man in front of her.
This had become her new everyday routine. Humans was the main goal of the Handler and she managed to create or should we say cultivate y/n into a controlled killer. The Handler thought she was successful on creating a legacy, two strong killers…until they found five. That’s when she saw y/n slowly drifting away and falling. A leap of faith that no one in the commission should do.

Masterlist | Taglist | Prompt list
Fear.
That’s all you could feel.
“Somebody help him!” You shouted, dropping down to his side. You pull back his shirt to find blood staining his skin and his face an unnatural pale color.
“Five!” You shout, cupping his face with your hands. “Why wouldn’t you say something? Are you insane?”
“Sorry, pretty girl, but you have to keep going… so close,” He whispers before passing out.
“Five!” You continue to shout. “We need to get help!” You said, spinning to face Allison and Diego. They both nod, helping to pick him up and take him back to the car.
You lay his head on your lap as the other two get in the front and begin to drive. You run your anxious hands through his hair, feeling them shake as he gets paler by the second. Stupid Five and his god complex, his need to save the world. For once, he could just put himself first. You swear Five stresses you out more than any other person you’ve met. And yet, in that stress, you found comfort in him. He was the one person you felt safe with, the person you trusted with your life.
He was like your better (maybe bitter) half.
“You’re gonna be okay, Five,” You whisper, though you’re not sure who you’re trying to convince more, him or yourself.
When you get back to the Academy, Allison and Diego carry him in as you look for Grace.
“We should’ve taken him to the hospital,” Allison said.
“A kid with a shrapnel wound might raise some questions.”
“Yeah, well, so does the shrine in Harold Jenkins's attic,” Allison quips back.
“Guys!” You scream, waving at the boy. “Five?”
“Grace!” Diego calls out, searching for his mom. She rounds a corner smiling at Diego, who points towards Five, she nods, taking him from Allison, and you follow her upstairs.
Grace sets the boy down on the bed softly as you grab a chair and sit in the corner, trying not to disturb her work. The whole time your knee bounces with fear as you stare at him.
He actually looks peaceful when he sleeps.
When Grace finishes up, she smiles at you, squeezing your shoulder and reassuring you before stepping out and offering you some privacy.
You’re grateful for that because you had a lot to say to the unconscious boy.
You pull your seat closer to him, grabbing his hand and softly kissing it. “You’re an idiot, you know,” You start. “Would it kill you to be selfish just once? You’re just so… annoying! You run around trying to save everyone but yourself. What happens if that gets you killed? Then what? And I don’t want to hear that ‘I’ve lived a long life’ bullshit. I think… I think we deserve a long life together. I deserve to get to wake up with you every morning and make fun of your coffee addiction and… and love you.”
You sigh, squeezing his hand and blinking away the tears. It was weird admitting how you felt towards the bitter old man. You were sure the only person he loved was Delores anyway. Which was why it’s good he passed out.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is if I’m going to keep having these stupid feelings for you, you gotta stop getting yourself shot at. Or I’ll shoot you myself.”
“You go on about me not dying and then threaten to kill me?” A voice chuckles. “Kind of thrown for a loop here. Which one do you want?”
Your breath hitches in your throat when you see a pair of green eyes set on yours. “You’re awake!”
You wrap your arms around the boy, careful of his wound, while also trying to pull him as close to you as possible. He responds just the same, wrapping an arm around you.
But then you pull back with wide eyes. “How much did you hear?”
Five just shrugs with a mischievous grin. “Oh, I don’t know. I really liked the part about living a long life together and coffee addiction, oh, and—”
You cut him off with a flushed face. “I get it! Just… shut up and kiss me.”
Five’s hand is quick to find the back of your neck, pulling you closer as your lips meet in a tender kiss. Your hands cup his cheek as you press against him. He tastes like coffee, which you expected, but you could grow to like coffee if it’s like this.
He pulls back before going in for one more sweet peck and then lays back on the bed. His green eyes trace your face, and you feel embarrassed under his gaze.
“What?” You ask with a light scoff.
“Nothing,” He says. “Need cuddles.”
His hand finds yours, bringing you back towards him, and you let him pull you into his chest. His arm wraps around your shoulder as you lean your head on him with a content sigh.
“I promise to stop almost getting shot at,” Five says.
“Go—”
“After the apocalypse.”
You don’t bother arguing with him, considering you’d be dead whether he did this or not. Instead, you press a kiss to his neck. “Okay.”
He hums, pressing his own kiss to your forehead. “And then you can shoot at me all you want.”
“Even better deal.”
“Yeah, I figured you’d like that one, pretty girl.”
“Only when it comes to you, pretty boy.”

idk if you still do au ideas but what if delores was a real person in the apocalypse? how it woul dbe done i have no idea but i love all your aus and thought it would be cool
okay okay I don't tend to go for real!Dolores aus admittedly because I find her much more compelling as what she is: a reflection of five himself and a symptom of his crushing loneliness
but i started thinking about it and you know what?? i think five deserves a little socialization, as a treat
so say like, 0.5% of the population is resistant to abilities. Allison would really struggle to rumor them, Five wouldn't be able to jump with them, and, most importantly, whatever the fuck Vanya's ability does has like, reduced damage or something
and the og apocalypse isn't the moon apocalypse, so let's say that it was pure waves of Vanya's powers that fucked over the earth
so 0.5% of the population survives the apocalypse. though, let's be honestly, the real number is a lot smaller than that. People who might have survived Vanya's initial power wave (miraculously) did not survive buildings crushing them or survive the car/plane/bus/train/other transportation crashes or survive being left alone when they are too young to reliably look after themselves, or the variety of other problems that come with 99.5% of the population dying at once
So, Five arrives in the apocalypse and is met with ruin and fire and a whole lot of dead people. He finds his siblings, but it doesn't matter. They're dead. He doesn't even recognize them at first, these strange grown-ups who he identifies not by their faces but by the umbrellas on their wrists that match his own
As he realizes the full impact of his situation, he hears a voice that says, very succinctly, "holy shit!"
It's a girl a few years older than Five himself, maybe 15 or 16, and she is very excited to see another survivor.
And here's where I u-turn this au around bc i'm not all that interested in real!Dolores, but I would be down to talk about Five meeting survivors in the apocalypse, because if Dolores is real I don't buy no one else survived.
So Dolores shows up and see a Literal Child crying over the corpses of his family and assumes that Five is a fellow survivor, and she immediately grabs him up. Five is incoherent with grief at this point anyway, so he doesn't even protest when she basically hauls him away from the bodies. She's babbling at him, but he doesn't really hear anything she's saying
And then she takes him to her dad
(Why not, let's have the 1% potentially be a heritable thing)
and her dad, let's call him just some dad name. like Rick. it has been a fucking WEEK for him, okay. he had his daughter with him, his ex-wife is on the other coast for her work, and by some miracle he survived the apocalypse and so did his child, and he's been wracking his brains trying to figure out what the fuck to do next
and then his daughter shows up with a traumatized thirteen-year-old in tow
now rick is a good dude. he's a dad. they get out of five that his name is five ("what the fuck" dolores mouths to him over five's shoulder and rick can't help but agree) and the bodies he found were his siblings ("Dad and Ben and Vanya weren't there though," this child cries desperately and rick feels his own heart clench in response, "They might still be alive!")
"We can look for them." Rick assures his new adopted child, because he is an adult in a fresh apocalypse and this kid has presumably lost everything he's ever known (more than rick even knows at the time)
and they do. They each get wagons and they go out and find supplies and look for other survivors. Five is... surprisingly helpful and also surprisingly docile as he is able to rely on Someone Else to give orders while he attempts to (dissociate) process what the fuck has happened
and here's the thing: Five prides himself on being independent, sort of. He's independent for a child soldier, but he's used to taking orders from a male authority figure and Rick happens to be just that
The first time that Five does something dangerous and Rick yells is a revelation
(Rick isn't sure if he hopes that Five's dad is alive or not, because if they find that man alive then Rick might just kill the jackass himself. Also like, Five is bizarrely knowledgeable out survival skills, like way too knowledgeable about it, which is helpful for them but also very concerning)
they find a newspaper and Five finds the article that mentions his father's recent death ("Huh. Heart attack." Five says, and there is no emotion in his voice)
(Years later, years later, Five and Rick talk. "I don't think I wanted to find him, either." Five admits, softly because Dolores is asleep, "I think I was more scared of finding him alive than I was of finding his body. He would've been so mad at me, I think.")
this newspaper is how Rick and Dolores find out about Five being Number Five, Umbrella Academy Missing Person
"Dude, what the fuck." Dolores says, wide eyes, "You're like, thirty?"
"I'm thirteen." Five says, and then checks the date on the newspaper again, "Also I think I would technically be 29 if I lived through all of it, 'cause it's April and my birthday is in October."
"You... time travelled?" Rick asks, which is honestly the more relevant question, "Can you go back?"
And Five just,,, crumples on himself. Because he tried, he tried really hard. It didn't work. "I'm gonna figure it out. I'm gonna go back, I'm going to save them."
That, Rick thinks, is a lot of weight to put on one person's shoulders, but especially the shoulders of a child.
"Alright." Rick says, because what else can he say after finding out his new child has superpowers and is from like, 2004? "What do you need?"
("Oh my god I have so many memes to teach you." Dolores says later, reverently. Five blinks in confusion and Rick mentally prepares himself for the recitation of so many vines)
And it's easier, somehow. Five sometimes feels like it's a betrayal, but he settles into apocalypse life with an ease that surprises him.
He lets Rick fuss over him and help tie his scarf securely around his head every morning before he sets off on supply runs with Dolores. And they're kids! Five has never had a friend before, and Dolores is funny and smart and she's struggling just as much as he is.
"I don't know if my mom's alive." She says to him, in solidarity when he checks the face of every corpse to see if they're Vanya.
Five is practical in the way only a child soldier can be. He's economical with the room in their wagons, carefully examining what might and what might not be useful.
Dolores, on the other hand, constantly takes up space with what Five sees as useless shit.
"Excuse you," Dolores says, shoving a game of monopoly, the entire discworld series, and a pack of glitter gel pens into her wagon, "These are absolutely vital apocalypse supplies."
She challenges him, plays with him in a way no one ever has. "I bet you I can find more batteries today than you can," She grins at him, "Winner gets to pick dinner first?"
"You're on." Five says, directly before Dolores pulls two packs of 24 AA batteries from behind her back, like a cheat.
Dolores makes him take a ten minute break when they find a playground that has been mostly not-destroyed. They rummage around kids backpacks and mother's handbags for some good loot, too numb to corpses to even be bothered all that badly about the corpses they belong to.
"I'm getting on the swings." Dolores says when Five starts making noises about moving on, "I haven't been on a swingset in ages."
"What's the point?" Five grumps.
"Don't be sour because you can't swing as high as I can!" Dolores laughs, getting higher and higher as the swings creak ominously.
Five grumpily gets into the other swing and grudgingly kicks himself back and forth until Dolores takes pity on him and teaches him how to properly move his legs and body to get higher and higher.
Dolores jumps from the swing seat and lands with a flourish and smile. Five jumps out of his seat and then jumps, warping right in front of Dolores and making her yell and hit at him in outrage. Five smiles the widest he has all week.
This is how Five grows up in the apocalypse, with Dolores teasing him into taking breaks and leaning over his shoulder to look at his math and scandalizing him by stating that she'd only just started on matrices in her own high school math class.
Every night they huddle around Rick while he picks up whatever book Dolores picked out that day because it is a travesty that Five has never read hunger games or whatever, and then they read together because it would be a genuine blood bath if they all took turns. The first time Five accidentally mentioned a spoiler and Dolores genuinely considered murder was the birthday of this tradition
Some days the air is too smoky or there are dust storms or it's just plain too dangerous to go out, and they all stay in. Dolores regales Five with stories about public school, and Five tells them about his siblings.
Then they all cry
"I shouldn't be crying." Five sobs.
"Shut the fuck up," Dolores sobs back, "You literally watched me lose my shit over remembering my shitty eighth grade dance and listened to me sob-sing toxic for like four hours."
"In fairness I also wished you would shut up then."
"Let me hug you or I will start singing songs that I only remember the chorus for again you absolute fucker."
"I could always sing some -"
"No, Rick/Dad."
And Five grows up. Rick shows him how to shave very carefully in front of cracked mirrors. Dolores teases him every time his voice cracks. Rick tells Five in no uncertain terms that he loves and cares for him, and that Reginald was a little bitch. There are a lot of heartfelt conversations around that, honestly. Rick telling Five that he and the siblings deserved better, that they were children and deserved to have a childhood.
And that he has faith in Five. Rick and Dolores both do, they bring him back paper and pens and pencils and chalk and anything Five can use to write equations. They poke around any libraries for books on theoretical mathematics and quantum physics. Rick and Dolores go out scouting for food while Five stays home and can work longer.
They also make him take breaks, make sure that he's looking after himself.
They're a little better off than OG!Five when it comes to food, because some animals survive. Enough that Rick figures out how to hunt. Five is the first one to each bugs, and even though Dolores makes faces they all start eating bugs as well.
"Pretty sure there's loads of cultures that eat bugs." Rick says grudgingly, wondering if he should try stirfry the cockroaches and if that would improve the taste. "There's even, uh, cricket flour or whatever, right?"
"Plus you eat like, five spiders a year when you're asleep." Dolores says cheerfully, just to watch her dad's face scrunch up in displeasure.
"That doesn't sound true, but I don't know enough about spiders to dispute it." Five mutters, and Dolores gives him such a proud look that it makes him roll his eyes.
They're in their thirties when Rick dies. He's out foraging and hunting, and the rubble he's standing on gives way and he ends up with a gash in his leg. He manages to stop the bleeding, but the world is filthy and they don't have any antibiotics.
He gets an infection.
"It's okay." He tells both of his kids, "It's okay. I'm just so glad that you guys have each other, y'hear? I'm so glad."
"It's not okay." Five says, voice thick and choked, "It's not."
"Yeah, well, you're going to figure out how to go back, right? Go back in time and save everyone. Then I'll have never died, right?" Rick smiles, "And even if you don't, I'll be waiting for you on the other side and we'll see each other again anyway."
"I'm going to fix it."
"I know. I have faith in you, Five." Ricks says honestly, and that's more than Reginald ever said.
They sit quietly together while Dolores is out scavenging. They've been taking turns sitting with Rick.
"I won't remember you, in the past, will I?" Rick says rhetorically, but Five answers anyway.
"I don't think so."
Rick hums, "Well, doesn't matter. If you need help in the past, you come to me, y'hear?"
"You won't remember me."
"Doesn't matter. You come find me, and you tell me your crazy story until I believe you, and then I'll help you." Rick says firmly, "You're family. You're my son. Timelines? Don't matter. If you need help, with anything, even if it's just with - with filling out a bowling team or something -"
"I have never been bowling in my life and you know it." Five interrupts, but it makes him laugh just a little bit which was clearly Rick's intention.
"Well who knows what you'll get up to in the past! You'll be able to go bowling, you know. Get to wear those uncomfortable shoes. Hey, you go far enough back maybe you can go to Dolores's tenth birthday party and put me out of my misery."
"Was she bad at bowling?"
"Oh, she was wiping the floor with me. No contest."
"Honestly, that sounds absolutely accurate."
"Shut up, bowling just wasn't my sport. Regardless, the point was that I'm giving you a free pass to come and get me. Because I know you, I know how you think." Rick brings up his hand to tap his finger against Five's forehead, "You get it into your head that you need to go it alone, take it all on your shoulders. I'm telling you that if you do that I'll somehow manifest my memories and come smack you over the head for being stupid, you hear?"
"I'm not dragging you into anything." Five says firmly, "I'll have my siblings."
"Who were also children." Rick points out. "And dragging? Dragging is such a strong word for a volunteer."
"A volunteer who won't remember volunteering." Five shoots back.
Rick just shrugs, and then winces when the movement jolts his bad leg. "Five, I'm going to be honest with you here. And sappy. Can you handle a bit of sappiness for a minute?"
"No."
"Well too bad. Can't leave a dying man, you'd feel too bad. So you're stuck with me. But you listen good, okay? Because you aren't dragging me into anything. Whatever life you have, I want to have a part of that. Because you're my son. Wherever you are, whatever you do, I want to help because you're family. What you'd be doing by leaving me out of it is depriving me of someone I love, depriving me of knowing one of the best kids I've ever known."
"Shut up." Five says, choked.
"Nope, it's sappy time." Rick states, "Maybe asking you to come find me is selfish, but I don't care. No matter what version of me exists, I want to be in your life."
"My life is a walking joke, why would you want any part of that?"
"It has been my privilege to watch you grow up. To help you. To be here for you. Of course I'd want to be there to watch you grow up the rest of the way."
"But -"
"Shut up, just let me tell you that I am so proud of you. You never give up, and your heart is so big. You love so much and so loudly, and it's been the highest honor of my life to be included in your family."
Five pauses for a moment to collect himself before simply saying - "You're the best dad I've ever had."
Rick snorts, "Considering my competition, I'd sure hope so. That bar was so low old Reggie was practically limbo dancing with the devil. Now get over here and give an old man a hug."
They don't bury Rick, when he dies. They don't have time and the ground is too hard and they don't have the heart to move him. Instead the pack everything up and seal him in the shelter they'd lived in.
Dolores pulls out a bottle of ancient nail polish and painstakingly writes Rick's name on the wall with his birth year and an approximate current year. They aren't 100% sure though, since time blends together out in the apocalypse, but it's something.
They continue by themselves. They get older.
Dolores jokingly calls him her husband because the way his face scrunches up makes her cackle. They see other people very occasionally, usually passing through. Usually groups. Dolores and Five get to flex their hosting skills, though more than one group declines their cockroach stirfry.
("It's a family recipe." Five says with amusement in his eyes that usually manages to drown out old grief.)
"Jeeze, that kid couldn't have been older'n twenty-three." Dolores complains, "Makes me feels positively ancient."
"They wouldn't have known any world 'cept for the apocalypse." Five muses, pouring some boiled water into wine glasses because they might be living in the apocalypse but they can be fancy.
"Do you ever think about that?" Dolores asks, turning to him with no judgement, just curiosity. "When you go back, you'll be like, erasing them from existence."
Five shrugs, "Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe this place will just split off into an alternate timeline."
"Maybe none of this is real." Dolores says, amusement coloring her voice. "Maybe you aren't talking to a real person at all. Maybe this is just a symbol of your insanity and cracked mind."
"Dolores, I literally have a scar where you stabbed me. Did I somehow manage to stab myself in the back?"
"Scraped you, I scraped you. By accident."
"So you maintain." Five says haughtily, swirling his water in his wine glass like a pretentious prick.
"I could totally be fake. You don't know my life."
"I know way too much about you, Dolores. Like, way way too much." Five scoffs, because Dolores and him have literally no secrets from one another at this point. Five even knows the truth behind what happened at Janet Scranton's thirteenth birthday party. Like, he said, way too much.
"Maybe you made it up. Maybe that's why you know so much."
"Dolores, I'm going to be honest with you right now." Five presses the tips of his fingers to his chin, "If you were a figment of my imagination, you would be so much better at math."
"Hey!" Dolores squawks indignantly, "I didn't even get to finish high school you pretentious prick!"
"Neither did I!"
"You didn't even go to high school, you brat."
"I'm fifty-two I think I've outgrown 'brat.'"
"Tell that to your attitude." Dolores says haughtily, "You're still younger than me."
"Won't be when I go back in time." Five says cheerfully, completely ignoring Dolores's venomous look.
"That's cheating."
"Sucks to suck." Five says loftily, taking another sip of his water.
Sometimes they talk about The Plan, with capital letters. What Five is going to do when he goes back in time, depending on when he pops out. Is he going to adopt his siblings? What about Reginald?
"You don't think I could kill Reginald?" Five says, holding a hand to his chest in mock offense.
"I think you should let me do it. I'll even give you control of tonight's music if you do."
"What are you doing to do? Bite his ankles? What if you're like, seven or something?"
"All the better to get away with it since I'll be too young to convict or whatever."
"Pretty sure that's not how the law works."
"How would you know? Just for that I'm playing Istanbul on repeat again."
"I don't know why you think that's a threat. That song slaps."
It takes a few more years before Five is close enough that the Commission comes to interfere. Because that's what I think happened - Five was getting too close and they stepped in because they might as well distract the man as much as they can with missions, right?
So the Handler shows up. And she offers Five a job, telling him that they have the ability to travel through time. And Five - hesitates.
"Give me some time?" Five asks, and the Handler graciously gives him 24 hours.
And he and Dolores talk it over, because now that his goal is more in sight than it has ever been and Five is scared.
"What are you waiting for? You have the chance to see your siblings again." Dolores says patiently.
"Yeah," Five says, and what he doesn't say is clear. But I won't see you.
"Five." Dolores says, and she cradles his face between her palms like he is something precious, "I have had so much time with you already. More than I would have ever. We have been so lucky, to have this time. How can I demand more than what we have already been given?"
"When have you ever not demanded the world, Dolores?" Five asks, his own hand coming up to cover Dolores's own.
"We've had decades together, Five. We're getting old. I was always going to lose you, one way or another. Nothing lasts forever."
"I don't want to lose you."
"I know. But if I had to choose a way, if I could decide where our story ends, this would be it. Letting you go, because this way you get to live. You get to see your family again. You get to save the world. I could ask for nothing more than for you to get your happy ending."
Five removes Dolores's hand from his cheek so that he can cradle it between them, "I'm happy here with you. I've never been happier. Isn't that silly? That I was happier in the apocalypse?"
"I bet killing Reggie would make you happy." Dolores laughs rustily.
"One day you're going to see the mysterious disappearance of a famous billionaire in the paper and feel a twinge of satisfaction and now have a clue why." Five laughs as well, shaking his head.
Dolores pats Five's hands, "Five, look at me. We've had our time. And you're going to give me even more of it. More time with my father. More time with my mother. I'll never know it, but you'll have saved me."
"What if this is - what if this is an alternate reality? What if I leave you here alone?"
"Then you'll be saving a 15-year-old girl from the same fate as me. Because as much as I love you, as much as I have loved this time we have had together, this is still an apocalypse. This should never have happened, and if you have a chance to go back and prevent it, then I want you to take that chance with both hands."
"Even if it means leaving you alone?"
Dolores smiles at him, "I'm not going to be alone. Far too many creepy crawlies in the apocalypse for that."
"Shut up, I'm being serious."
"Hmm." Dolores hums consideringly, "Maybe I'll head North, to that new settlement that last group said they'd heard word of. Sure they'd find some use for an old woman who's survived this long in the wilderness."
"You can have my half of the record collection." Five says, pulling her against him into a hug that she easily returns.
"As if I wouldn't have stolen them as soon as you left." She scoffs, but it's a little wet, and Five pretends his own eyes aren't leaking tears.
When The Handler comes back, Dolores gives him another hug. She also slips something into his pocket - some photos. They'd taken it a year into the apocalypse, when Dolores had found an ancient looking polaroid camera and towed it home despite Five's protests about practicality. The photos are worn and faded at the edges, but the smiles on Five's little apocalypse family's faces are undeniable.
"You'll have to see if they magically fade when you change the timeline." Dolores whispers to him with a grin, "Like in the movies."
"Okay." Five whispers back.
"You have the list of movies to watch, right?" Dolores says. Five rolls his eyes and nods because he wrote the list last night into his Vanya-book while Dolores hovered over his shoulder and critiqued his handwriting.
"And you promise to try a proper non-expired twinkie at some point?"
"That I do not promise. I think even looking at one would make me lose my lunch. I have twinkie-trauma."
"Shut up and get going." Dolores says, because the Handler is starting to tap her foot impatiently.
And off Five goes to become an assassin. Though - he's much more gentle this time. He's careful, he doesn't kill children and he usually takes jobs that don't require killing at all. He distracts and manipulates events as much as he can without killing.
He's actually much more well socialized, thanks to Rick and Dolores. Less feral child and more determined man on a mission.
Which is why he's so frustrated when he finally, finally manages to get the equations to work and falls through and falls - directly back into his stupid thirteen-year-old body.
"Shit." Five says, loudly, and revels in the surprised look on his siblings faces.
He strides into the kitchen, and they all follow him like ducklings. They look exactly the way they did when they died.
"Wow this is actually way harder than I thought it would be." Five muses, looking at their dead faces. But as Dolores would say, life is hard but you have to keep on trucking sometimes. "Whatever, what's the date?"
"Five, where have you been?" Diego demands, looking irritated. It makes Five snort in amusement.
"The future. The past. If you want like, an exact list of dates you'll have to hold your horses. I spent like, two weeks in Peru once. No souvenirs though, unfortunately."
They look taken aback, like they didn't expect Five to have quite this much sass. Oops. That is definitely Dolores's influence. Or maybe he was always a little asshole. In fairness, what teenagers aren't tiny assholes? He has an excuse.
"What the fuck does that mean?" Diego's eyebrows are furrowed in anger. It kind of takes Five aback for a second, because he remembers a Diego who stutters when he argued.
"When did you learn the fuck-word?" Five asks, raising an eyebrow before her can help it, "Grace ought to wash your mouth out with soap."
Diego immediately goes red, "Shut up!"
"Wow you're so easy to rile up. Aren't you like, twenty-something? Actually, I could figure out for myself how old you are if you gave me the date."
"I'm twenty-nine." Diego growls, like that was the point.
"Haunting!" Five says cheerfully, because that means there is way less time than he would like, narrowing his time down to a six month window.
It's extremely funny how his cheer makes all of them make faces.
It's Klaus who leans forward, "Why do you need to know?"
Klaus's face is open and curious and - (looks exactly like he did when Five found him all those years ago) - and Five can't help but answer him. "The world end on April 1st, 2019. No it isn't an April Fools joke, yes I have heard that joke like a million different times. I just want to know how close I landed so I can, you know, start working on how to fix that."
"Woah woah woah, roll it back." Allison says, holding a hand up, "What?"
"The apocalypse occurs on April 1st, 2019." Five says, slowly. "I have traveled from afar to prevent this from happening, because like, everyone dies."
"Everyone?" Vanya says weakly from the side.
She's clearly expecting to be ignored, so Five turns his head to address her directly by wiggling his hand back and forth a little. "Sort of. Like, not too many people survive at all. A handful of the human population, you know."
"But you survived?" Diego recovers admirably, if bitingly.
"Well, no." Five says rolling his eyes, "Wouldn't you just know it, Klaus here has managed to figure out a new ability!"
Everyone turns to look at Klaus, who immediately holds up his hands like he's being arrested or something, "I did not!"
"Wonderful! Now that we've established that I'm alive -"
"Why should we trust a word you say?" Luther says for the first time, looking pensive.
Five blinks, genuinely taken aback. "Because... I'm your brother? Because I can clearly and obviously time travel? Like, yeah, it would have been more convenient if I'd arrived in like, my old-body for proof-purposes, but like. I mean. Thirteen is still a pretty convincing age to be to prove time travel considering if I hadn't, I would be like, almost thirty."
"Roll it back again." Allison says firmly, "What do you mean by 'old body'?"
"Great question!" Five says pointing at Allison and smiling. Everyone looks at him weird again, and Five takes a moment to wonder if they've ever experienced positive reinforcement. Knowing Reginald, probably not. "Wait! Is Reggie alive? Wait, no, answer that in a second. Uh. When I time traveled I fucked up my body I guess, I was like, old. White hair and wrinkles-type old from spending decades in the apocalypse. But I fucked up the calculations and got booted back to my thirteen-year-old body, I guess. How, I have no idea."
"What?" Vanya says, still equally weakly.
"You have no idea how fucked up time travel is." Five whispers conspiratorially to Vanya, loud enough for the whole table to hear, "There are so many ways to die. Or permanently tear a hold in space time. But like, with life as we know if ending soon-ish, I figured I couldn't possibly fuck it up worse than it already was, y'know? Speaking of, anyone have the date again?"
"Wait, what was that about dad?" Luther asks, very focused.
"Oh, you still call him dad? Big oof." Five says automatically, because apparently his verbal filter is shot to hell after living with Dolores. It does make Klaus bark out a too-loud laugh.
"What does that mean?" Luther asks aggressively.
"It means Reginald sucks and doesn't deserve the title of 'dad,' what did you think I meant?" Five asks, and now both Diego and Vanya and both cracking smiles, though Vanya is covering hers with a hand.
"Have some respect for the dead." Luther growls, standing up and looking very large and threatening.
Five sways back, craning his head up, "Woah there big buy, sit down before I injure my poor growing spine looking up at you. Jeeze, did Reggie force feed you steroids or something? I wouldn't put it past him but like, I just want to know he at least went over the side effects of the drug with you. Also like, thanks for narrowing it down. Also terrifying! Seriously though, exact date please because if I have less than 24 hours I am going to break down crying and that is a threat."
"I love this Five." Klaus says reverently.
"March 21st." Vanya offers, finally.
"Wow! Terrifying!" Five says, clapping his hands together, "Hate that. Ten days, huh? Well, who wants to get on board the save-the-world express?"
Klaus immediately flings his hand in the air, Five points at his brother appreciatively. "Yes, excellent! I'll take the volunteer in the lovely skirt as my first team member. Any other volunteers?"
"Danke!" Klaus simpers, grinning widely like this is the vest entertainment he's had in weeks.
"I'm not just going to stand here and listen to you badmouth dad and boss us around." Luther slams his hands on the table.
"Well not with that attitude." Five snarks.
Diego raises his hand, "I would like to join team fuck dad as well."
"We can certainly debate team names later." Five says, nodding wisely as Luther gives some sort of scandalized gasp.
"Honestly, I just want to see where this is going." Klaus confesses.
Five shrugs, because he doesn't really care about the reason. "Don't you want to prove me wrong them? Prove what a well-adjusted young man Reginald Hargreeves raised?"
"Shut up." Luther grinds out, looking a moment away from throwing a punch.
"If this is all true, I have to get home." Allison cuts in, looking concerned, "I have - I have a daughter."
"I mean, if you want to give Claire a world to live in then I'd stick around, but that's just me." Five shrugs.
"You know her name?" Allison asks, obviously taken aback.
Five is almost offended, "Uh, yeah. I have her photo as well. Y'all get on like, a bizarre number of gossip magazine covers did you know that?"
Allison manages to outdo herself in terms of being taken aback once more.
There's a beat of silence, and then Five turns, "Vanya? You in?"
"Me?" Vanya blinks, looking shocked. "What can I do?"
"Yeah, what can she do?" Diego asks, crossing his arms and suddenly looking grumpy.
It baffles Five, who scrunches his nose, "Uh, like, a lot? I assume? I mean. I'm going to be honest here, just looking at y'all right now is a lot. In more ways than one! Hashtag trauma and all that, but like, name a single one of you that wouldn't be the most obvious person in the room as soon as you walked into it. Except Vanya, who somehow manages to look like a well adjusted adult, by some miracle."
"Did you just verbally say the word hashtag?" Allison asks, looking so deeply confused.
"More concerned about the trauma he tacked onto there, but y'know, to each their own." Klaus immediately cuts in.
"You think I'm well-adjusted?" Vanya asks, looking oddly touched.
"I would like to direct your attention to Diego's leather pants-scowl combo and Luther's general aura of daddy-issues." Five says pointedly, "I can practically smell the tragic comic book backstory in this room. If I'd jumped back a decade earlier this would have been Batman's wet dream of orphan selection."
"Alright! Game plan!" Five says, waving Diego's knife in his hand.
Diego's hands immediately go to his weird harness looking thing, "Hey!"
"Give me just one moment to get the tracker out." Five rolls his eyes, "Then I'll give it back, I promise. Also if someone could ask Grace for like, some antibiotics that would be good."
"What?" Allison asks, directly before Five stabs himself and there is suddenly panic at the table.
"Relax!" Five says, allowing Diego to remove the knife from his hands. He doesn't need it anyway and his hand immediately drops down to root in the wound.
"Five what the fuck!" Diego yells, but Five just pulls up bloody fingers and waves the tracker into Diego's stupefied face.
"What the fuck is that, Five?" Allison demands, looking very shaken.
"I literally just said it was a tracker." Five points out, "Now, I think our first team activity should be voting on whether we destroy it or take it out to bumfuck nowhere and ditch it to confuse the Commission."
"What the fuck is the Commission?" Diego barks.
"Man. Maybe I should just hit up Rick." Five muses, "This is going to take so much explaining."
"Who is Rick."
"So much explaining."

Something I’m super curious about is Five’s personality and it’s development. I love current Five’s personality but clearly he couldn’t have consistently had this attitude since he landed in the apocalypse.
Like I know he had Delores but obviously he was sweet on her in his time in the apocalypse. So that reemergence in the roots of his abrasive childhood personality had to have really been perfected while at the commission. The commission where he also had the chance to gain a more deadly edge that affected his overall current attitude, alongside the focus on stopping the apocalypse he developed in those long decades.
I think it’s just super interesting to think about Five’s in between period of readjusting to socialization, before he’s settled into the comfortable hyper focused and almost manic state we know him as. A period where he had to have been getting used to talking with other people and dealing with them not being on the same page or being threats to his goal. A large shift from Delores I’m sure. (Sorry for the long rant but just wanted to hear your thoughts on the concept!)
Oh wow. Honestly Five’s personality is super interesting. There are so many layers and I think it’s apart of what makes him such an interesting character that so many people love.
For me, personally, I feel like at his core he is inherently a caring person capable of great amounts of love. But (much like Diego) his circumstances and interactions throughout his life have forced him to adopt a much more abrasive and defensive attitude. I think what we see of him as a kid is...well, a kid who is still very much developing and is just not in a good environment. He’s snippy, he’s brash, he’s still growing and learning and trying to figure himself out but he’s in this harsh atmosphere where there isn’t room for weakness or trial and error. He’s probably used to being yelled at and belittled and neglected and abused. (I mean seriously, how much negative behavior do you think the siblings learned straight from Reginald?) He’s severely lacking in warmth and love and support. So like...I can definitely see him being that way. That’s gotta be confusing for any 13 year old, especially one that deep down probably just wants to be loved.
Then there’s apocalypse Five...I feel like he’s just a MESS. There’s so much grief and trauma there. Such a desperation for human connection. I feel like he would be so desperate and in pain that a lot of his usual defense mechanisms would sort of take a backseat for a while. Just thinking about what it would’ve looked like if he had gotten back or been rescued while he was still in his teens...I think he still would’ve been very broken and just a huge wreck. I feel like there were probably moments where that side of him would come back a bit, like maybe when he was seriously struggling and starving and maybe he’d snap at Delores only to apologize profusely afterward and beg her not to leave him too.
Then on to the commission, it was probably incredibly jarring. To go from no human contact to suddenly being forced into yet another harsh and quite honestly insane environment filled to the brim with killers...oh and by the way you have to be a killer now too. I think...I don’t think Five felt a lot of relief when he got to the commission. I think it was better than the alternative and he saw it as his only chance to get back home. But I think it was very difficult and painful and he was very aware that they were all threats too (who would kill him if he ever stopped being useful) and he should never let his guard drop. That’s probably why he worked alone, not only because he didn’t trust them but also because he was so used to it by then. In my mind, I think he got there and clammed up and fell back on his old defense mechanisms, only now twisted by all those years of isolation and pain. I think he relearned what he needed to to get by but never really learned much more about socializing than what he knew at 13. And that’s the personality we’ve seen him settle into at the start of the series. He’s running on old software, he never got the update and there might also be a few bugs in the system.
He had never been in an environment where he could actually grow for any extended period of time. I do think he’s grown since then though. His siblings haven’t always reacted very well to his personality, but I think we’ve seen him open up a bit. Get more comfortable with the people he actually cares about and trusts. He’s tried to share, tried to ask for help. He’s apologized and listened and is just trying really hard. I really hope we see more of that and just get to see him finally grow and develop as a person.

Tumblr media
Some time back, not long after he got stranded in the post-apocalyptic world and perhaps a year and a half before running into you, Five’s only companion was Delores.
It had been a meeting of chance (as everything is) in the middle of a destroyed department store. She had been looking at him. And maybe that’s why he was so drawn in – that stare; it was a lifeless stare, yeah, but it was not by any means a dead stare like the ones he had met too many times before. No life had been lost to create that stare. She was smiling, too.
Five had lifted her carefully out of the chunks of concrete, greeting her because there was no one else. For the first few weeks, he just placed her at the corner of her store and visited every once in a while, then took to occasionally toting her around the City when he needed to talk. He liked to pretend that she answered back – sometimes. After a few months, he named her Delores.
Then he met you.
Unlike Delores, you were human. Breathing. Alive, somehow. And you had thoughts and feelings that weren’t always connected to his and – and it was weird. It was home.
You didn’t question his friendship with Delores. Five had seen the half-burned stuffed frog in your wagon, so you wouldn’t have had anything to hold over him anyway. He knew that you knew that he still went to the department store in the middle of the night. And, shit, deep down Five also knew that Delores was, in the end, just a hunk of plastic with eyes. But after a year and a half of having nobody else, she had become something of a comfort. And a confidant. Burdening you with his issues was not an option, so when things became a little shittier than usual, he would slip out from underneath his blanket, make sure you weren’t having a nightmare, and head downtown to voice his thoughts aloud.
Over time, though, he learned that you were willing to listen. You listened, and you were always kind about it even if you didn’t always understand. His nightly visits decreased. And it was okay for a while.
But then Five began to struggle with a new issue – one that was a little different than the usual mess of stress and anxiety – and one night, he finds himself looking down at Delores again because talking to you about it is definitely off the table.
Unfortunately, Delores’s kindness is different from yours.
Well, here we are. Again.
“I’m just here to think,” he snaps, combing a grubby hand through his tangled mess of hair. The lantern beside him glows weakly as he plops down onto a slab of concrete. “Mind your business.”
Your business is everyone’s business here, Five. And to put my own two cents in, I think that you’re scared of your own feelings.
Blood travels to Five’s cheeks, unwarranted, as he narrows his eyes at Delores. “For the last time, that’s not what this is about. It’s – Jesus Christ, I’m gonna get over it. This isn’t a life-or-death issue.”
Then why have you been ranting about it like it is?
“I’m not.”
Ha! Rich.
He grits his teeth. She stares back at him, unperturbed. Bastard.
You know, maybe you’ll feel better if you say it out loud. Air it out. Test to see if it’s real.
“I’m not doing that.”
Do it.
No.
Say it.
No.
For god’s sake, Number Five, take a goddamn look at yourself –
“Fine!” Five hisses, though it feels more like an explosion. He throws his hands up. “I like [Y/n], alright? We’re the last people on this goddamn planet and I like them, and I shouldn’t care this much but I do. Happy?”
Delores pauses. Five looks away.
Very.
Ugh.
Did it feel real?
He clicks his tongue, crossing his arms, and doesn’t answer. The smile on Delores’s face seems a little smug, and it makes him want to hurl. He shouldn’t have said it out loud. Relieve some of the pressure and everything starts to boil over …
Breathing in deeply, Five forces his shoulders to relax. He bids a soft goodbye to Delores, then heads back to camp.
A week later, Five’s visit comes back to bite him in the worst way possible.
You’ve been having a hard time starting the fire for tonight, so he finishes splitting the evening rations to help you out with the bow drill. As he does so, you watch in silence, both of you waiting patiently for the smoke and dust.
“Do you think we have enough wood?” you eventually ask.
“It’s enough,” he murmurs, only half paying attention. After a while, a few chalky wisps of smoke begin to rise from the charring wood. He leans in to blow the ember carefully once it forms, then puts it into the tinder and coaxes out a flame. “Get the kindling?”
You oblige, and within a few minutes, a healthy fire starts to dance atop the wood, scorching his face and fingers with heat. Five stares intently at the oranges and yellows for a moment, lips pressed together, intrigued in a tired sort of way. Warmth. Then he backs off and grabs a portion of crumbled up crackers, handing it to you.
You spread the cloth over your knees. “Now all we need is some jam.”
“What kind?”
A soft hum escapes your throat. You contemplate unhurriedly, dabbing up some stray crumbs with a finger. “Blackberry,” you reply after a few moments. “Or strawberry. The kind that’s sort of chunky.”
It’s been a long time since he’s tasted either of those things. The simple thought of whole crackers spread with fresh jam, sweet and dark and sticky, is a luxury in and of itself. Five tries not to think about it too much, munching on his third fragment of stale cracker. It makes his mouth dry. “Hm,” he says, picking up the canteen for a few drops of water.
The fire pops. A few sparks fly out into the air and die just as quickly. You finish your supper and wipe your mouth, stretching your legs out in front of you as you sigh.
Five tilts his head at you. “What?”
“What?” you parrot back, though he sees the way your fingers fidget.
“You have something to say.”
Your facial expression shifts just the smallest bit. “How can you tell?”
(Simple – because he knows you. He knows your ticks; knows how you tick. He knows your smiles and all the subtle ways that your voice rises and falls. He’s memorized you because he fears forgetting, and it’s a problem.)
“Kind of hard not to,” Five replies.
“Oh.” You chew the inside of your cheek, still seeming unsure. “Well, um … I just wanted to talk to you about something. And please don’t be mad.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Why?”
“Um. A couple nights ago, I had a bad dream.”
“I know.”
“Not the one you woke me up from. A different one,” you mutter. “The night after we found the pillows.”
“Oh,” Five says.
“Yeah.” You look down at your hands. They’re dusty and rough, littered with small scars from climbing and falling and holding. “I … um, that night, I woke up and you weren’t there. And I sort of panicked, and went looking –”
The blood drains from Five’s face.
“I went looking for you, and I found you. Talking to her.” You glance at him for a split second. “About me.”
Oh, fuck.
Five stares at you as you fiddle with the scrap of cloth on your lap. You know. You weren’t supposed to know. You weren’t supposed to ever know, and now you do.
“Five?” Your voice is curious and small.
His voice is raspy. “How much did you hear?”
“Almost everything.” You grab the cuff of his coat sleeve as he attempts to stand up. “I’m sorry for eavesdropping. I really didn’t mean to, but –”
“It’s not your fault. Look, I don’t want to talk about it,” he replies tersely. “We need more firewood, anyway.”
“We have enough,” you say, though you relinquish your hold when he tugs a little harder away from you. You sound hurt. “Five, it’s okay to feel like that.”
“It’s not. It makes things more complicated.”
“How?” Standing up, your brow furrows. “I like you too, Five. If that’s what you’re worried about.”
His chest tightens. “That just makes it worse.”
“I like you,” you repeat. Your hand moves down to take his gently. “A lot. And it’s okay.”
(Did it feel real?)
Five meets your gaze solidly despite not quite wishing to, a familiar sense of guilt washing over him when you squeeze his hand.
Sometimes, he wishes he hadn’t met you. Then he would’ve gotten what he deserved for his recklessness – nothing – with nothing to concern himself with other than equations and survival and time. That, he’s fairly sure, would have been easier to manage. He hadn’t been taught to care for someone else. Not like this, at least.
But you. You. Five swallows the lump in his throat.
“I might have to leave you behind,” he murmurs, more hoarsely than he’d like to admit. The words burn like ice on the roof of his mouth. “One day.”
You don’t reply for a few seconds.
Then, for some inexplicable reason, you step a little closer. “But not tonight," you say. "Right?”
For shit’s sake, you’re so optimistic. Five chuckles dryly, hand still engulfed in yours, blinking away the vague stinging in his eyes. “Of course not.”
“Then I forgive you. If you feel like you need it.” With a mild exhale, you smile at him. Your eyes are glossy. “So can we sit back down? I like doing that.”
He quietly agrees.
So you bring him back down to sit before the fire, closer to him than before. No more words are left to be said. A heavy silence settles in their place, neither good nor bad, and almost comfortable. For the first time in a long time, Five tries not to think.
You lean against his shoulder. He welcomes it.

The Rewatch Academy: Episode 4 of Season 1
Tumblr media
“Man on the Moon”
I am in no way a good analyst so my little analysis and speculations probably sound a bit goofy or pretty wild and probably mean nothing at all. Everything I put into this post about each episode is purely what I noticed or thought, whether it’s funny or serious. I will be making jokes, so please just leave it at that (in no way am I trying to make fun of an actor and or character!) I am also in no way saying I noticed this stuff first. This is just what I noticed while rewatching these episodes

☂ So at that point Luther had already been alone for about five years (due to his siblings leaving when they were 18 or even 17 according to Diego), and by alone I mean he did’t have his siblings with him. I’m not counting Reginald, Grace, or Pogo because I’d imagine they weren’t the best company. There was a two year gap between Luther getting the serum and then being sent to the moon. He had already been “alone” for five years before he was sent away to be completely alone for four years. He hasn’t had really any social/outside interaction besides going on missions for almost ten years, which means Luther is an awkward dude and he hasn’t been a true leader because he hasn’t had anyone to lead. I don’t think people really realize this and I think that’s where some of the hate towards him comes from
☂ We see that Luther looks into Allison’s and Klaus’s bedrooms as he makes his way down the hall, and I’m willing to bet he did that for all of his siblings. Makes me wonder how many times the siblings went to Five’s room to visit it or to even check with hope that he had come back
☂ I wish I could ride my bike around my house and chug a gallon of milk :[
☂ I can’t believe that Reginald still made him wear that leather battle suit 💀
☂ Why are there posters of animal anatomy in the infirmary?
☂ Apparently it takes between two to four months to grow a full beard, so that’s  about how long Luther had been lying there
☂ *suffers through the Allison and Luther scene*
☂ “HoPe I wAsN’t BeInG tOo LoUd”
☂ Vanya and Leonard were really sweet in the beginning. Screw you Leonard
☂ It’s really sad that not one his siblings notice that Klaus is gone. Not. One.
☂ Are you telling me that Klaus and Five are certified freaks? At least I’m sure that’s who Cha Cha is referring to, or maybe it’s Luther
☂ I tried looking up tortures in Trinidad to see if Cha Cha was referring to any specific event, but I think it’s just a random thing in the show
☂ It’s only when Diego mutters “The boy” that it reminds him either of Five’s superhero name “The Boy” or his new appearance as a teen again so it finally clicks in his head that that’s who the mystery kid is
☂ Diego admitting that he doesn’t really know how to process his feelings!
☂ He’s very protective of his family and that’s something that I love about Diego. He doesn’t know who Hazel and Cha Cha are but all he knows is that they are searching for Five for some reason and that his siblings almost got killed last night
☂ Five doesn't realize the suffering that he’s putting his family through at this point since he’s only focused on finding who’s responsible for the end of the world. It’s ironic that he’s doing all of this to keep them alive and safe and yet him not being with them almost got them killed. Five buddy, you should have included all of your siblings from the start no matter how much they annoy you
☂ Also where has Five been this entire time? He left the van at night and now it’s the next morning. He’s been following the guy but why did it take him so long to corner him?
☂ Ope, and there’s a continuation error! When Luther takes his arm out of Five’s dresser, he takes part of the wood panel with him. When it cuts back to Diego talking there’s just a fist size hole
☂ “We barely got out with our lives.” Okay but where were you, Pogo?
☂ It’s funny how quickly they revert to child-like shame when Pogo scolds them. At least they still respect him I guess
☂ Is Hazel eating potato chips with ketchup?
☂ I think one reason why nobody notices that Klaus is gone is because none of them saw him that night during the attack. They possibly assumed he already had left the Academy??
☂ Looooove the “Shingaling” scene. They are straight up vibing
☂ I don’t know why Luther was frustrated with the van door being locked. It’s not like he could rip the door off or anything.......
☂ I have a two questions here:
Why did Diego know where to find Five based off of the book? Sure he saw that it came from the library, but that doesn’t mean that he’ll be there
Wouldn’t Luther and Diego have seen the smoke coming from the Meritech building? Unless they left immediately and weren’t able to see the smoke even though they probably were still in the vicinity when it began to burn
☂ Five is holding the man’s arm to make sure that he doesn’t get away (hard to tell in the pic below though). He needs that sense of security that this lead isn’t going to escape his grasp, but I’m sure that if he were to run he wouldn’t get far when you can just teleport after him
Tumblr media
☂ I got a nice pic of Five (also the dude on the bike that was riding behind Five as he runs up in this shot just does not care that this building is on fire)
Tumblr media
☂ When it shows Five on the ground, it at first starts off with light and slightly comedic music before it quickly switches over to something dramatic. I always thought it was funny that they play the light stuff as we see Five just laying there 💀
☂ You can see just how quickly Five’s face changes from shock to disbelief and disappointment as his only lead is literally blown away from him look, you can pinpoint the exact moment his heart breaks. Also Five definitely would have had hearing issues since we can see that the windows on the building behind him were shattered. He’s staring into your soul....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
☂ There’s nothing really significant about this at all, but Whippets are racing dogs and in the comics Five goes to watch a dog race at one point
Tumblr media
☂ “I hate sprinkles.” Hey, me too!
☂ I love that Griddy’s is still open despite the damage that was done to it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
☂ Diego left home at 17 (which is illegal so I wonder if he was emancipated or maybe Diego ran away and Reginald didn’t care to look for him) so I wonder if the others left when they were 17 too or if they waited until they were 18
☂ Luther I don’t really think you’re one to talk about being “grown up” my guy. In fairness none of the Umbrellas know how to be fully functioning adults, not even Five who’s about twice the age of his siblings and is almost a senior citizen
☂ “I stayed because the world needed me.” Hey that was basically Five’s reason too, but more so for getting to see his family again. Anyways, like brother, like, uh, brother!
☂ "And things are never gonna go back to the way they used to be.” You sir just predicted the next week(s) (and technically years in the 60s) of your life and the lives of your siblings! This also applies for what happens after those weeks/years, but we haven’t gotten there yet but it’s certainly not the way things used to be!
☂ How was Luther upset enough that he wanted Diego to stop talking after he said something genuine and a bit sad?
☂ This whole relationship talk isn’t exactly relatable......
Tumblr media
☂ He’s just chillin’
Tumblr media
☂ Reginald can ✨perish✨ Oh wait, he already did
☂ Here I am taking any little scrap and running with it, but when Five says he’s going through puberty twice does that mean that he didn’t get his aging altered by The Commission? In the comics, Temps Aeternalis/Commission stopped Five’s aging but here it sounds like that didn’t happen. Since we haven’t heard anything about Five’s DNA in the tv show we don’t really know much about his aging alteration either. I think that they really do have to leave that part out due to Aidan himself, who is a growing teen, and for the fact that they would need to come up with an excuse for Five’s aging (Aidan already looks different in S2 and he’s taller too). I wish they would bring this stuff up in the show!
☂ Five deflects answering the question of what he’s the best at most likely just because he’s just distracted but also possibly because he doesn’t want his brothers to know at this point
☂ First the feral chimp smile and now this
Tumblr media
☂ Five actually sounded serious when he was talking about how many people he has killed and how he’s the ”Four frickin’ Horsemen” which is more so an exaggeration but it still shows us that he views himself as dangerous and powerful. He revealed this to them while he was drunk, even though they don’t really understand, but I wonder if Five ever actually planned on telling his siblings what he did and how much blood he has on his hands. I feel like he would have told them after he had saved the world from the apocalypse, but yet again I could also see him brushing off questions in relation to what he just said to Luther and Diego to hide his past from his family
☂ ✨”Little Psycho”✨
☂ As eerie as all of those ghosts are, it’s a really neat scene
☂ It’s not really meant to be funny, but Klaus denying the duct tape just reminds me of a little kid refusing to go into timeout
☂ I guess Cha Cha got out through the door next to the bathroom when Klaus was banging his head on the table?
☂ It’s a shame that Patch died right away, I really liked her
☂ Klaus, where you’re going really isn’t any better
☂ It’s sweet that Diego puts Delores down gently and doesn’t just toss her somewhere. Even though she’s a mannequin, Diego knows that she means something to Five
☂ Well Luther I think it’s pretty self-explanatory what he meant. You just need more context
☂ Diego: *signaling that someone, possibly a threat, is approaching and to be alert*
Luther: 🕴👁`👄’👁
☂ Even if they did think that Klaus had left the Academy before Hazel and Cha Cha attacked it, it’s sad that it took them this long to think about him
☂ Luther patting Delores is so cute
☂ Say it with me kids, “Patch deserved so much better!”
☂ My heart breaks to see Diego so heartbroken and upset, especially when he says “I gotta go, okay? I can’t be here when they come, okay?” Ugh, that gets me
☂☂☂☂☂☂☂

Your thoughts on Luther and Five’s relationship?
Oh, I am always soft for Luther and Five, very much so. Arianna (@seance) once called it a great relationship because the lines between who is the older and who is the younger brother are constantly blurred, and she is so right. I like how Five always opens up a little to Luther, and their discussion in the car in Episode 5 of Season 1 is one of my favourites in the entire show, because it’s one of the few times where two siblings talk to each other openly and understand each other, even if the understanding comes from something as devastating as completely isolation. I think their relationship is one of the most well-rounded in the show; we see what they appreciate about each other, but we also see them butt heads over disagreements. Luther is the first one who really comes through and has Five’s back after his years away, takes him seriously, but also pushes him to seek solutions that go further than murder. And Five doesn’t dismiss Luther, he trusts him to protect him and take care of him, which, again, makes me very soft. There are so many small moments I really like about them. Luther taking the idea of Delores seriously because he understands that she is important to Five. Five redirecting that bullet to keep Luther safe. Luther seeing Five put baby powder down his pants and making the jump to the fact that Five must have a plan. Luther patting the sweat from Five’s brow. Luther’s unwavering loyalty to the Five he knows. Five rushing to help Luther up from the floor after he got thrown through the air by Lila and holding onto him to make sure he’s alright. Five taking a brick wall to the head, the madman, so that Luther doesn’t get hurt. I just think there is a lot of love between them and it makes me very soft.
