Áldott legyen a teljesség! Xelektbe! Randomba! Krosszfédbe!

Az elektronikus zene egyik abszurduma, hogy a chill out kifejezést a legpunkabb bandának, a The KLF-nek köszönhetjük. Nem állítom, hogy chill-out válogatás a „Sense”, de ez a figyelős, hátradőlős zenehallgatás forrása. Másik érdekesség, hogy a történelmien fontos, első ambient album, a nagy Brian Eno – Music for Airports-sza ma nem férne be a legjobb 100 ambient album közé. Azért ez vicces. Harmadik évösszegző válogatásunk downtempoban mozog tehát, műfajilag ambient, drone, kortárs, experimental, dub, trip hop, field recordings, minimal, krautrock, etno elemekből építkezik. A terjedelme 140 felvétel, cirka 12 óra, és az online verzió is 11 óra felett van a maga 123 track-jével.

ARTIST RESEARCH

An artist jess looked into was Sam Taylor, a well known artist based in london who works closely with thrasher however some other clients of theirs are nike, google, warner brothers, youtube and apple to name a few. There use of colour fits the theme of what we wanted for our posters along with the loopy shape patterns.

Alva Skog is a swedish illustrator who graduated with a bachelors in graphic design and has worked with clients such as apple, the guardian and new york times, jess chose to look into this artist as they have the vibrant colours and boldness also mixed with photography which fits perfectly to our posters.

Sebastian Curi is animator and graphic designer who is well known for their pop style cartoonish figure and colour palettes. They use mixed media for a lot of their work mainly including gifs and illustration mixed with photography, these images they collaborated with and artist called carzoglio. Some of sebastians clients include uber, zara, venmo along with many others

Researching Contemporary representations of Feminism in illustrations

My impressions and takeaways:

The frequent use of purple and green (suffragette colours) is what stood out to me the most.

The illustrations all depict women in a non stereotypically feminine way. Women are shown in their most comfortable forms with body hair and bodies that don’t adhere to the sexualised standards.

Although I find these illustrations important and impactful, in my project I think I will want to portray female empowerment without being too on-the-nose and actually showing illustrations women directly.

My first idea that came to mind was how in the first act Eliza drops her violets in the mud. I could use this to show the purple and the green in the play.

I also want to use typefaces made by women to pull out how Eliza is described or treated in the play. Rather than focusing too much on directly portraying the narrative like I did in my previous attempts, I want to pull apart the text and draw attention to the important parts of the text.

Art Lab: Today at Apple with Alva Skog

Alva Skog is a Swedish illustrator based in London, UK. In 2018 she graduated with a BA in graphic design from Central Saint Martins, UAL.

A group of DPS students from the 0602 collective and third year IVM (illustration and visual media) students decided to go along to her talk at Apple Convent Garden to learn more about her style, process and how she’s grown from graduating last year, to now being featured in The Guardian and Apple. 

Whilst she talked us through her process of working on an iPad and with the Procreate app, she showed us time lapses of how she uses a warped sense of perspective, often exaggerating hands and feet to help her illustrate a story or news article.

She also explained that whilst her work often includes characters, she personally tries to make these look as gender fluid and diverse as she can, alongside fitting in her clients wants and needs from their briefs. Skog  explained that  in her last year of University (CSM Graphic Design) she was questioning more and more what she should do with her career after studying and started to apply for competitions, live briefs and going to more talks. This helped her expand her style, not only by listening to harsh criticism but also by gaining confidence in what works best for her in her own style. 

She then led us through a workshop and encouraged us to draw and experiment in a similar style as her, as she walked around the room giving us advice or teaching us little tips and tricks. At the end of the talk we each showed our work on the screen as people gave advice or words of praise. 

As far as workshops and talks go, this is definitely one of the most insightful platforms a few of us have ever been to. Rather than a small collection of some University workshops and talks that can feel over curated, tense and judgemental towards your work, Skog and the Apple team managed to curate a talk and safe space for artists and art enthusiasts to create and be productive in, all whilst teaching us more about a piece of technology thats becoming more and more highly desired for digital work. A few of us noted that this method of teaching and workshop tutorial was far easier to follow and be creative in then some of our past University experiences with workshops.

I Don't Know Her Name, But I Know Her Work / Available at www.draw-down.com / From December 2017 through February 2018, #CentralSaintMartins exhibited work by past and present students of #graphicdesign in an exhibition titled "I Don't Know Her Name, But I Know Her Work". The name of the #exhibition reflects the often overheard observation about graphic #design by #women that while their work seems familiar, their names are not. Along with making new work, students researched the careers of historical #femaledesigners and wrote extended captions about their own work and work from the #CentralSaintMartinsMuseum & Study Collection. The catalogue is a wonderful keepsake of the exhibition and features new work influenced by the methods and materials used in the featured historic graphic design works by Freda Lingstrom, Dora Batty, Enid Marx, Mary Kessell, Dorothy Hutton, Margaret Calkin James, “Herry” Perry and Claire Leighton.
