Second novella for #novellanovember! I had really enjoyed Once Ghosted, Twice Shy, also by Alyssa Cole, so when I saw this at the library on my novella mission, I scooped it up. I was charmed by the premise, and there were some moments sprinkled throughout that I really adored, but overall this book left me a little cold. Gus seemed a little too perfect, they way they met a little too unlikely, and the ending felt a lot rushed. I was intrigued by the disabilityrep, but the neurodiversity elements of both characters felt underdeveloped on the page. I did root for them, I guess in the end I felt there was too much here to fit into a satisfying novella. Of course, this is a part of a series, and I have heard that Reggie appears in other book(s?), so maybe I would feel she was properly fleshed out if I’d read the rest of them, but I am unlikely to do so. . . This is one of those books that I saw everywhere and had to buy. My Instagram was full of people reading and enjoying it. I’ve had it for a few months now and never found the right time for it. I had a bit of time before my February TBR kicked in, so I gave it a try.

It took me longer than I’d expected to finish it. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. I had such high expectations for it that maybe it was always going to feel a bit off. I mean, if you compare something to Get Out and Rear Window then it’s always going to be tricky to live up.

That said, it wasn’t the worst thing I read in January (thank you The Incendiaries) and there were some enjoyable parts. Thankfully, I have a bit of time to get my thoughts in order before I write my review. I can tell that it’s going to be tricky.

Gentrification is an ENTIRE bitch. I can't even lie, this is probably not the book I should've read while recovering from Battle Ground. I was already fragile but this book had me all up in my feelings. I feel like this could be added to a list of "Damn why are White People out to get us?!?" Media along with Get Out and Mexican Gothic. White supremacy and privilige are helluva drugs. All of that being said its a 4/5 star book. Hello everyone and hope you’re having or have had a wonderful Tuesday. I’m very excited as I’ve got five days off now so am planning lots of reading, some boring adult cleaning the house 😂 getting my hair done and seeing one of my best friends whom I haven’t seen in a year! 🥰 Today I’m showcasing a book I read recently on my kindle for @criminallygoodbookclub - When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole. This novel had such an intriguing synopsis, told from the point of view of a black woman and a white man who are neighbours in the same community in Brooklyn. Sydney is desperately trying to keep hold of her mother’s house but the neighbourhood is undergoing an alarming rate of gentrification. The familiar community and neighbours she knows are being forced out and there is some very shady and underhand business going on behind the scenes. The actual “thriller” portions of the novel don’t really materialise until about halfway through which was absolutely fine with me. I was really enjoying Sydney’s story and thought the author did a fantastic job with a unique theme to create an intense and captivating mystery. I don’t want to give away too much as we’ll be discussing this book on Sunday but I have to admit, up until the ending, this was a four star read for me. Then the ending came as if out of the blue and I’m sorry to say that it wasn’t quite what I expected. As a reader, I adore being surprised and ordinarily thrive on anything unexpected. There was just something about this particular ending that didn’t sit right with me unfortunately. It didn’t feel believable as part of the plot and additionally felt completely out of character for our lead male and female. I’m very aware that I might be in the minority with this review and that other readers will think it’s wonderful. However, I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief with this one - it felt like a book of two halves. Such a shame as I was really loving the characters and the plot up until then!
