Queer Ladies of Sonic the Hedgehog

The Sonic franchise doesn’t have a whole lot of romance.  There’s the occasional ship tease, and that’s about it.  And there definitely isn’t a lot of queer content.  

However, there are some Sonic characters who have been confirmed to be LGBT+ in some way.  It’s usually just a behind-the-scenes comment from someone working on the series, rather than representation in the story itself - but hey, it’s better than nothing.  

I was interested in the women and girls in particular, so here’s all the (almost) canonically queer ladies associated with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sally Acorn is bisexual and Nicole the Holo-Lynx is in love with her.  

Pre-reboot, Sally was Sonic’s girlfriend.  Post-reboot, however, the writers place a greater emphasis on her connection with Nicole.  This would suggest that Sally is bisexual.  

Nicole loves Sally back, so - depending on whether you see her pre-reboot interactions with Shard and Espio as friendly or romantic - you could read Nicole as lesbian or bi.  

At one point during the Spark of Life arc, Sally asks Big the Cat if he minds that Nicole isn’t organic like the rest of the Freedom Fighters.  Big’s response is, “As long as they’re nice, I don’t care what anyone is.”  This exchange could be read through a queer lens - in which case, Sally is checking to see if others are okay with her dating Nicole, and Big is suggesting that he’d accept them.  

Ian Flynn has stated that he supported the Sallicole pairing and left subtle hints to it throughout the Archie Comics series.  However, it wasn’t featured too strongly because he knew a large proportion of the Sonic fanbase would not accept Sally dating anyone other than Sonic.  

Gold the Tenrec is sapphic.  

Evan Stanley stated on her Tumblr blog @spiritsonic​ that she was “leaning towards either bisexual or lesbian” for Gold’s orientation.  She added that Gold would crush on Blaze, Sally or Clove: “women who seem to have their s*** together”.  

Gold’s sapphic identity was never established in the comic before it was cancelled.  In the Silver Age arc, her only appearance, she was surrounded by boys and men - Silver the Hedgehog and Professor Von Schlemmer.  

Clove the Pronghorn is a lesbian.  

Aleah Baker has stated that Clove was intended to be written as a lesbian.  Her conflict with Sally and Lupe had “a mix of admiration of their leadership with a bit of a crushing angle”; that was Baker’s mentality when writing.  

However, there was “zero romantic angle” to Clove’s story, her lesbian identity was never acknowledged, and the comic ended before she could be put in a situation where romantic stuff would become relevant.  

Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf are in love with each other.  

The creative team at IDW Publishing is aware that people ship Tangle and Whisper, and has been leaning into it in subtle ways.  For example, Whisper’s tail wags rapidly when Tangle puts an arm around her.  

Flynn has explained that SEGA does not want the IDW comics to “go in-depth” with any romantic relationships - even Sonic and Amy are supposed to be “just very good friends”.  So in a similar vein, Tangle and Whisper have to be written as “really, really, really, really, really, really the bestest of friends.”  But hints are still being dropped.  

Amy Rose and Tekno the Canary got married and had a kid.  

In Sonic the Comic, Amy and Tekno were two Freedom Fighters and good friends who were sought out by the Ring of Eternity, a sentient dimensional warp which sent them on missions to right wrongs and fight injustice through time and space.  

In an issue of the fan continuation Sonic the Comic Online which was co-written by Nigel Kitchen (someone who contributed to the original series), a glimpse into the future reveals that Amy and Tekno will settle down together and have a son, and that Sonic will be his godfather.  

Given that Amy and Tekno also have a soft spot for the boys in their life (Sonic and Shortfuse, respectively), it could be said that they are bisexual in this continuity.  

Rouge the Bat and Topaz had something going on.  

When these two women first meet, Rouge asks Topaz what she likes to do with her handcuffs (a joke that was cut from the official English dub).  She also teases Topaz about her age and weight.  

However, it’s hinted that a more friendly, or even romantic, relationship has developed over time.  When the portal to Sonic’s world is powered up, Rouge gives Topaz a gem - “a steal” from the jewellery store - as a parting gift.  She then bids her companion farewell as she enters the portal, leaving Topaz weeping.  

Rouge could be considered to be bisexual, given her canonical interest in both Topaz and Knuckles.  

Emerald the Iguana is genderfluid, Crystal the Cat is bisexual, and Sapphire Flutterby is a lesbian.  (And Jewel the Beetle might be a lesbian too.)  

Emerald, Crystal and Sapphire are some of the “Jewel Crew�� OCs created by Jennifer Hernandez.  They have made cameos in the IDW series now that Hernandez is an official Sonic artist.  And one year, for Pride Month, Hernandez posted a picture of the Jewel Crew waving various pride flags on Twitter.  So I’m counting them as official queer characters.  I know, it’s a bit of a cheat.  

Three of Hernandez’s OCs are queer, and the other two (Jade the Cat and Ruby Ringtail) are allies.  

One of the queer characters is Emerald, who is genderfluid.  Emerald used to have she/her pronouns, but I don’t know if that’s still the case.  

Secondly, Crystal (the pale pink cat) is bisexual, and Hernandez ships her with Mighty the Armadillo.  

Finally, Sapphire (the butterfly) is a lesbian, and Hernandez ships her with Jewel the Beetle, as seen in her Patreon art.  This could mean that Jewel is also a lesbian, or at least questioning her orientation.  

And there you have it!  All the (almost) canonically queer ladies of the Sonic franchise!

X-Files Collector's Edition: MOTW but Rinse and Repeat

MOTWs were among the best of The X-Files episodes... but what if those monsters had follow up episodes?

Honorable mention: @paperheartsarts/Paper_hearts_and_homemade_arts's series If You Will Let Me (which is still on-going) which follows Padgett's demon pursuing Scully even after death. Horrifying hallucinations and real, physical danger nearly claim her and Mulder's lives.

Liver extractions and bodies are piling up... but Tooms is dead. Mulder and Scully track down an unexpected source.

Scully's nurse in One Breath bargained indirectly with her son-in-law, Death, for her patient's life. Invisible deals are struck, allowing Scully both to live and to see her father one last time.

Post Paper Hearts Scully finds the last girl, setting her partner free from this last horrific hold.

S6 (or S7) Mulder takes Scully back to Texas for another undead case, courtesy of Frohike. Between her jealousy of a flirty, bubbly redhead, pique at Mulder's constant Sheriff Hartwell teasing, enjoyment at an incredibly fancy hotel her partner booked specifically for her, and fear of said flirty redhead's two horrific insurance brother-bosses, Scully is torn between annoyance and affection. She is, however, able to pull it together just in time for the crazy finale involving her partner, a vampire feast auction, and a law enforcement bust led by the vampire Sheriff himself.

The Well-Manicured Man survived FTF's car bomb, fending off his compatriots with threats of exposure. Plunging himself into caged retirement, he awaits the inevitable, befriending his spy-housekeeper leading up to the events of One Son.

""So what do you want to call them? Little bug-boys?"

"Bug-ees. Buggers. The deadened. The ungrateful dead. Deadheads. Hey, yeah...deadheads."

She looked like she was struggling to suppress the smile, but it came out anyway. "All right, so we have the disappearance of these deadheads from the previous case. We have two people dead now, with some sort of puncture wound in the back of their neck. Have you considered that you were hallucinating?"

"I thought you just said you believed--" She shook her head. "That Pincus injected those people, without a doubt. But what if...you've been assuming that he's a large insect-like creature who can trick others into believing he's human. What if it's the other way around? What if he's a human who can trick others into believing he's a monster?""

Field Trip Mulder and Scully ditch their quarantine early, experiencing unexpectedly peaceful and soul-searching mind-melds while investigating a case very like Folie a Deux. The depths of Scully's plumbed from the depths of an ocean, Pincus and snake venom, and rescuing Mulder from himself-- this is a gorgeous read: more exploratorily honest than neck-stiffeningly intense.

She turned, surprised by his tone. "Yes?"

"You want to know why the X Files and the two of you have been shut down so hard?"

She stared at him. "We know why."

Post S.R. 819 Mulder and Scully are captured by a cult. He's infected with the black oil while Scully frees herself enough to call in Skinner and the cavalry. She then must save her partner, ruthlessly torturing the alien virus in his body to death. Everyone else stands in awe.

""She kept her voice professionally mild even when she finally changed the subject. "Skinner said that Diana Fowley worked for Patterson."

He let his hand rest on her shoulder, admiring her courage. "I effectively introduced them. He liked her." Post Amor Fati Mulder's history with Monty Propps becomes relevant again. He slowly unravels the current mystery whilst reflecting on his past with Diana and his possible future with Scully, IVF, and angels. (There are even sections from Diana's POV during her early relationship which delves into her assignment to California and her recruitment parallel to Mulder's discovery of the X-Files.)

Mulder had a fleeting vision of the wiry little Englishman's body repairing itself and staggering out of the burning wreckage of a downed aircraft. It was a fact stranger than fiction that Lively had already survived three deaths. But all of those had been death by fire, Mulder reminded himself, falling from a great height would prove as fatal to L'Ively as it would to anyone else. Grinning like a hob-goblin L'Ively used the residue of his own melting flesh to draw a large greasy brown heart shape onto the glass, and through it blew a kiss to Scully. Post Paper Clip Cecil L'Ively cut a deal with the government-- because, of course-- and puts Scully in a coma. Mulder and Phoebe team up to take him down, healing a few old wounds and earning a bit of redemption.

It's S7: Kristen Kilar is back; and Scully has to pry open Mulder about his past with her and save him from being turned into a vampire.

I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.

Louis Tomlinson may only have two solo albums but he's proving to be one of the artists people should keep an eye on.

Having burst onto the music scene in 2010 as one-fifth of One Direction – a band created by Nicole Scherzinger on The X Factor after all five members were rejected, he's proven he's not just an ex-boyband singer. While singers from bands tend to keep a low profile and venture into other industries after a split, Louis is on a one-way ticket to becoming a mega-star in his own right.

Known for never losing his Doncaster accent and humour, the 31-year-old is currently embarking on his Faith In The Future World Tour, performing to thousands of die-hard fans every night – which he deserves credit for.

Although he may have come from one of the biggest bands of all time, the cheeky chap isn't afraid of getting up close and personal with fans – much to the dismay of his security who leap into action when he jumps off stage and runs to the barricade to see fans. In recent weeks, Louis has seen his expensive vests ripped off him, with fans even going as far as tickling him.

This, however, hasn't stopped him from putting on an incredible show. Despite only releasing two studio albums as a soloist (his second topping the Official UK Charts), he's pushing himself to the limits and playing arenas across the world. Most recently, he performed to around 21,000 fans at Manchester's AO Arena on November 11.

Walking onto the stage may be daunting for some, but Tomlinson showed no signs of fear as he opened with The Greatest – ironically, perhaps the greatest opening track. Throughout the night, he performed hits including Kill My Mind but also paying tribute to his One Direction days, belting out Drag Me Down and Where Do Broken Hearts Go. But since his pop days, Tomlinson has edged towards a more EDM and synth sound before finding his comfort in rockier tracks. He'd previously stated he'd taken inspiration from the likes of Sam Fender, Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys and Manchester legends, Oasis.

Nowadays, fans can expect the odd pop hit but also enjoy punk rock as well as indie pop and soft rock.

However, despite being in the business for almost 14 years, Louis remained grounded and acknowledged that Manchester was the start of his career. Between songs, he recalled his first audition for The X Factor in front of Simon Cowell, Scherzinger and Louis Walsh, being in the city. He told fans: "This is where I did my very first audition, so to be back here on my own it definitely feels full circle and I couldn't have done that without you.
