From one of my WIPs, the one I can share something from. Just because.

It's a Camaro and Billy loves it for a whole fifteen seconds.

His dad takes him to Bob's Used Car Lot on Saturday afternoon. Neil and the owner shake hands, calling each other by first name like they're old friends, and then it's Billy's turn to shake the hand of the short, wiry man with a bald head and a giant black moustache, and tell him that it's a pleasure to meet him, sir. They stay a couple of minutes under the sun, the adults sharing platitudes like they've known each other for a lifetime, when in truth they've been in Indiana for a couple of days only and Neil first set foot here this morning. Neil is good that way, when he wants to. Knows how to put on the affable charm of an upstanding citizen, the kind of man who would never think of beating his wife, never dare to put a finger on his kid.

Bob leads them through the lot, making a beeline between the cars. They shine under the sun, not a speck of dirt on the bodies, tire rims glinting. There are placards behind each windshield, boasting low mileage or, when that's impossible, cheap prices and guaranteed reliability. Bob leads them to the back of the lot, past the more recent, pricier automobiles, towards what are clearly not the crown jewels of his stock.

They sidestep the rustiest Ford truck Billy's ever seen (the placard behind the windshield says it's only 250 dollars, which in Billy's opinion is roughly 200 dollars too many) and an old Nova the color of a fresh turd (this one should go for 240$ but it's discounted at 200 for some unknown reason, probably its color). Behind them, just at the end of the lot, is a Camaro with no placard.

The body is painted a dark blue that reminds Billy of freedom and the ocean, the way the sea and the sky meet on the horizon when the sun has set. Those thick curtains Argyle put up in his bedroom last year, to block some of the early morning sunlight. It's a beautiful color, it just reminds Billy of all the things he doesn't have, landlocked and alone at his father's mercy in the middle of bumfuck Indiana.

But now there's a used Camaro in front of Billy, a promise of speed made of metal, and good god, it's a thing of beauty.

And Billy loves it.

For the fifteen seconds it takes him to slowly circle the car all the way to the driver's side, where he finds himself having to take a step back while he grits his teeth.

The driver's door is off-white. The bodywork around it is all dented and scarred, the paint scraped off in places, and the side mirror's kept attached to the door by a not-generous-enough amount of tape, so it hangs at a wrong angle, like a dead flower dangling from a broken stem.

A breathy "What the fuck!" is out of his lips before he can stop himself, but lucky him his dad is too busy exchanging more small talk with Bob to notice Billy's lack of appreciation now that he sees the actual state of the car.

This Camaro was T-boned and nobody took the time or the minimum effort to repair it decently. Not even a new paint job. Jesus. He wants to ask how much Neil paid for this busted piece of crap, but that would be a sure way to earn himself a beating once they're home.

So Billy bites back everything that's churning inside of him and puts on an appropriately enthused expression. He's got a car! Everything is perfect! Who cares if it looks like shit on one side! So fucking perfect!

Bob hands him the keys and says something about this being the right car for a kid like him. Billy plasters a smile on his face and nods, yeah, totally, perfect, a car that looks like a piece of junk is exactly what he's always wanted in life. Pairs all too well with the shitshow that are his past, his present, and most likely his future.

A broken and battered car for a kid who routinely gets an educational beating from his upstanding father.

Perfect.

The door opens with a loud squeal and as soon as he makes to sit behind the wheel, Billy finds himself fighting the urge to bolt out. The car... the car doesn't want him. It's a feeling that jumps straight at him the moment his right foot touches the carpeting and the shadow of the roof of the car covers half of his body. The Camaro doesn't want to be driven, doesn't want anyone touching its interiors, doesn't want to be moved from here.

There's something absolutely wrong with this car.

And Billy is trapped.

Caught between a hammer and a hard place. Between his father's expectations that Billy'll be grateful for the car he so generously bought him; and the Camaro not wanting Billy or anyone else in its driver seat.

Neil shoots him a cold gaze from a few feet away, where Bob is telling him to have a good day. It’s the kind of gaze that asks what's wrong and is ready to jump to conclusions.

The choice is simple.

Billy sets in the driver seat even if he'd rather peel his skin off with a dull knife and nods to his father as he slams the door shut. Like nothing noteworhty is happening. Like this is only the last one in a long line of selfless, loving sacrifices his dad's made for the sake of Billy's happiness.

Sure.

Billy adjusts the seat and the rearview mirror, and cranks down the window. He can’t but notice how the passenger window works electronically. Whoever installed the new door, didn’t even care enough to find a matching one!

He grits his teeth against the impulse to scamper out of the car and instead eases the Camaro out of its parking spot, until he’s close to Bob and can ask him where he can buy some car parts here around. Instead of telling him a fucking address, like anyone sane would, the guy tells him to take this road and then turn left on that one, and then…

“Drive a mile until you find a red barn on the left. Just past it, turn right. Right, not left.”

“Turn right past the barn on the left,” Billy repeats, mechanically.

“Exactly. A bit aways, you’ll find Jones’ Auto. If they don’t have it, they can order it. Tell ‘em Bob sent you.”

Billy swallows down a they won’t need me to say a thing to know I bought this piece of metal from Bob, the shit cars seller! and just waves a fake grateful hand at Bob, before driving his new wheels back to Cherry Lane, hating the car almost as much as the car seems to hate him.

this is a different au where will quits the fbi and becomes a painter (if im not wrong). abigail is alive and works for him. i read this awhile ago and i remember loving it because of how sarcastic will was. one of my notes was: will was so desperate to open up (not sure why but this man is so touch starved and craved for affection in the show so i guess it's canon accurate). i also have a soft spot for fics with abigail in it because she deserves the world.

When Will tells Hannibal to leave at the end of Digestivo, he goes. And then, a few years later, he shows back up. They have long conversations, drink a lot of wine, at the end of it all they find something that works.

i just finished reading this 2 days ago and it was an experience. i loved how well paced it was. the writing really matched the same vibe of the show. both hannibal and will were written quite accurately to how i feel they would react in the show itself. the way both of them interacted in this fic was realistic and how i wish i could erase my mind of this fic so i could experience it again for the first time.

3.  each according to its kind by chaparral_crown

Will does the only reasonable thing that someone fresh out of a mental hospital with no support system does - he leaves, and goes on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest.

this fic is THE hannigram fic, fight with the wall. kidding. this is more of a character study of will (hannibal doesn't even show until halfway through). the writing is top tier and just like the fic before it really does match the vibe of the show. i personally am not a big fan of smut (i don't mind it, i just prefer plot over that) and this book barely had any in it which is a godsend.

4.  ...And This One is Just Right by Sabi

When an injured BSHCI escapee breaks into Dr. Graham's vet clinic, it doesn't end cleanly. Surely it couldn't happen again? Or again?

will is a vet in this universe and i'm not sure why but i pictured him younger? it's only 4 chapters if im not wrong and it's a fun read! the characterisation of will is not as accurate to the show but to be fair it is a different universe and i still love this fic dearly.

◇ Huge Sukuna headcanon AU ◇ (cuz I'm crazy)

English is not my native language. It was originally written in Russian, so it is very difficult to translate it correctly, since there are a lot of slangs. And I’m also talking damn nonsense, that’s why.

Well, what... About the base?

Holy crap that was a lot of characters! For day 8 I wanted to draw all the ways I've drawn/imagined Carmen over the last 5 years! There are many I didn't do for one reason or another, but it mainly boiled down to space lol. These 10 (11 including canon Carmen) are (most) of my favorites of my AUs :)

Cat:

Both a Warriors AU and also just my "_____ as a cat" style!

This ones a lot less fleshed out so just bear with me lol. (ATM there might only be 2 clans, ACME and VILE, idk yet lol. idk what to name em either cos stickin "clan" on the end don't feel right XD)

In the Warriors AU, Sheeppaw grows up learning 2 contradictory versions of the Warrior Code: The true one from Shadowstalk, and the VILE version from older warriors. She gets made an apprentice a couple moons early, but is relegated only to camp duties until shes 6 moons old.

She trains alongside Cracklepaw, Tigerpaw, Molepaw, Goatpaw, and Silentpaw. At her first gathering she meets another apprentice, maybe a few moons older, from the other clan: Jewelpaw. The two hit it off and become good friends (and develop little mutual crushes). Sheeppaw also sneaks out and meets a kittypet: Player, who she also becomes very good friends with.

When her mentor, the deputy, Shadowstalk fails her on her final warrior assessment she pretty much has most of the same reaction as the show, just in the WC style.

After witnessing a murder, she hightails it out of there and encounters the newly named Crackletail. Panicked, she hastily and vaguely tells him she saw something and needs to Leave.

She makes it to Players yard and lays low for a while, and he introduces her to the neighbor cats, a sibling pair named Zack and Ivy. The four brainstorm and Sheeppaw is renamed Carmen. They know they cant let VILE keep doing what they're doing. So rogue Carmen and her kittypet friends start figuring things out from behind the scenes.

Pirate Cat:

Exactly as it says, bipedal cat world. Black Sheep was dropped off at a random orphanage in England, with a small stuffed black sheep (where she got her name). Since everybody are cats, Black Sheep isn't that atypical of a name. Sorta a mix of normal people names and cat names.

She grows up there alongside her self-appointed older brother Graham. When she's about 10-11ish she meets the princess: Julia Argent. Childhood friends to lovers letsgoo (its a recurring theme in these lol. its cute i like it).

The two eventually get together (in secret, yay homophobia and also societal status) It doesn't help that Black Sheep had a habit of getting in trouble so she could see the princess her princess.

The two get caught one night, and Black Sheep is nearly executed for "corrupting royalty", but Julia manages to talk her father down from that. Instead, she is exiled. If she ever sets foot in the kingdom after dawn, she WILL be killed this time.

Julia visits one last time, and Black Sheep promises to return someday when she finds somewhere where they can be together freely. She gives Julia her stuffed sheep to look after while she's gone, and asks her to take care of Fuega while she's gone (on one of their sneak-outs, they found a baby dragon that Julia managed to convince her dad to let her keep). Julia gives her the triangle choker. yay tearful goodbyes ;-;

Black Sheep and Graham (because no way is he letting his little sister go into exile without him) go from place to place, stealing when they need to and end up accidentally stowing away on a VILE pirate ship.

VILE pirate training to avoid death, they escape. Graham appoints the newly named Carmen Sandiego captain of their little ship, and they also pick up Zack, Ivy, and Player along the way. Carmen becomes very well known around the globe: civilians/lower class people see her as a Robin Hood hero (correct), while most royals and nobles see her as nothing but a filthy pirate (incorrect).

A few years go by when suddenly the crew gets word that the King of England is trying to marry off his daughter, who has recently come of age. Cue panicked race home + childhood lover reunion.

Daughter of Poseidon (Carmen Sandiego and the Olympians):

Percy Jackson AU! Replace Percy with Carmen, Grover with Player, Annabeth with Julia, and switch/move around some plot points and that's about it lol. I keep telling myself I'll do some scene rewrites of this one so we'll see. Includes PJO and HOO acting as prequels for Carmen Sandiego. Def wanna do dome rewrites for the canon show for this AU too lol

Dino Squad:

I'm out here combining one obscure kids show with another lol. If you haven't seen it, Dino Squad is this early 2000s animated show about these 5 teenagers that get mutated and can turn into dinosaurs, and go around stopping the bad guy from turning everything into dinosaurs. (I think the entire series may be on youtube lol. its goofy but man i loved it as a kid. i wanted dino powers so bad)

This is basically a high school au but most of Team Red has dinosaur powers. :P

In this, Dr. Bellum is experimenting with bringing dinosaurs back, but instead of just cloning them, she figures out how to mutate already-existing organisms into others.

(in the OG dino squad, the bad guy IS a dinosaur that evolved into a human--long story--and believes everything should still be dinosaurs. hes technically right, tbf, if the meteor hadn't hit they prolly still WOULD be dinosaurs. why does bellum want dinosaurs? because she's Bellum and she Can lol)

Carmen Wolfe and her twin brother Graham (they're fraternal twins. why? bc i thought it would be funny. yes he still has his accent. its my world i do what i want) are raised by Carlotta and Dexter Wolfe in Kittery Point, Maine. Carlotta is a paleontologist/biologist and Dexter is a history and geography teacher at the high school. They do know of VILE and what Bellum was working on and have been monitoring it in secret from the kids.

Carmen and Julia are those friends that met bc they were both hiding under the slide in like. Preschool and just stayed friends lol. They're the kind of best friends that will just. Show Up. usually Julia at Carmen's house because "You have better snacks" also Julia's parents just Don't Like Carmen. (Why? idk bc i said so. idk they think she's a bad influence. she's really not lol) Literally Julia has like a spot on the couch and a table setting. She's basically the third twin these three have known each other essentially their entire lives.

Zack and Ivy joined the group in middle school, when Ivy had the same class as Carmen, Julia, and Gray. Zack joined via association. (Zack and Ivy, on the other hand are not twins. again. bc its funny. each sibling pair thought the other was like them. zack and ivy thought Carmen and Gray were just normal siblings, and Carmen and Gray thought Zack and Ivy were twins. Julia had to explain to all of them it was not the case lol)

Player is Carmen's online friend that the whole group includes. they all game together and he gets ALL the public school tea. hes about the same age as Zack, so about a year-ish younger than Carmen, Gray, Ivy, and Julia.

At the end of their freshman year, Carmen and Julia start dating. Their friends and Carmen's parents know, they keep it secret from everyone else. At the end of the summer everybody (aside from Player) go to the beach for one last day of freedom before school starts. They swim through the mutant goo, and over the next few days discover their powers.

Carlotta IDs each dino: Carmen is a (large/person sized) pyroraptor, Gray is a T. rex, Julia is a troodon, and I still cant decide on Zack and Ivy's dino forms lol. Carlotta and Dexter explain the whole VILE thing and the group just kinda simultaneously goes "welp guess we're superheroes now. cool"

so yea dealing w highschool and also mutant dinosaurs and superpowers. this ones fun bc they can just be stupid kids lol

The Last Wolf:

My werewolf AU. The one that started all this mess and my love for making AUs of this show. It was my first fanfic i ever wrote, and it is very near to my heart. it's also gotten out of hand and become a franchise at this point it's ridiculous. (Seriously i've got a prequel of her parents planned and also a series of shorts set in the universe) It's gonna be a long ride, boys. Hope people still like CS by the time it's done lol

A Thief's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse:

Zombie apocalypse AU! Talked about this one a bit for AU day, and also as of this post I have ~1k words written of the first chapter! I also have a bunch of the major plot points outlined too ;) I wouldn't expect anything soon tho lol.

She wears a wetsuit under the coat bc it's really hard to bite through, especially with rotten jaws. She's got some boots she probably scavenged or traded for, and of course: the Walkman she probably found looting some abandoned building. She collects cassettes to listen to. Gotta keep sane in the end of the world.

How is this one a literal apocalypse and its still more lighthearted than the one based on FNAF lol

Redd Wolf (Five Nights at Redd's):

FNAF AU. I've truly lost it lol. I have this one completely outlined, nothing written but a lot of things are VERY clear in my mind. This ones uh. a lot more intense than even Thief's Guide. It's FNAF. its immense violence and child death. Seriously, Carmen, Player, Gray, Ivy, Zack, and Julia all end up possessing animatronics at some point. It ends happily, but it is based off a horror thing so if that's not your thing b careful <3

its supposed to be more of a mystery that gets unraveled, but if anyone wants specifics of it u can drop an ask :) i only have animatronic designs for Carmen, Julia, and Gray so far tho. I have ideas for the others too.

This is one I wanna share with y'all at some point. its probably the shortest of the AUs I have outlined so far, so yk. maybe in this lifetime lol.

Wings of Fire AU! Carmen is a rainwing/skywing hybrid (rainwing dad, skywing mom) She can camoflauge, fly decently fast, and has a prehensile tail. She can't breathe fire or use typical venom, BUT she figures out her venom, while not face-melting by itself, IS in fact flammable. again, more of a ~vibe~ than a story and plot, but I like drawing dragons.

Canon Carmen:

She's front and center, the one that started all this.

Way back in 2019, the autism and ADHD departments in my brain came to an agreement: This show is the greatest show of all time.

It was the first fandom I actively contributed to/interacted with. (I still read fics from other fandoms before, but had never been active in a fandom) Like I mentioned with Last Wolf, I had never actually written fanfiction before, and definitely never posted it. I love writing and telling stories (and boy howdy do I have A Lot of stories rolling around my brain). between all of the AUs ive come up with, I've gotten to practice so much worldbuilding and characterization. English classes usually focused on expository stuff, with like. a brief fiction writing thing. So I've definitely gotten to stretch my creative writing muscles with this show, and hopefully I can put em to use on original projects someday <3

I fell in love with the first season, and got ridiculously excited for every new season and the interactive. (heck, i played every possible option for the interactive the day it came out, and binged every subsequent season the day they aired.)

This show has been a big part of my life the last five years, and the original show will always be special to me. It's the reason I started learning to draw people lol, I have a drawing of Carmen from 2020 that I'm still really proud of. It's hung on my bedroom wall to this day.

so, i don't mind writing straight canonverse, but i'd need a lot of plot. it's not my favorite bc i generally prefer to write using AU's for any fandom i'm in, but i definitely can do it if i'm in the mood. here's what i had in mind, and i'm open to tweaking them, different ideas, etc. go crazy:

guard!alastor au. the one that every radioapple shipper knows and loves. could do so much for this. maybe the two of them made a deal for some reason where alastor has to be his guard, etc. i see alastor hating this deal, and lucifer rubbing it in his face, but over time they grow to appreciate each other and, maybe alastor even finds himself falling for the king. lucifer could send alastor to charlie's hotel in an attempt to sabotage her goals, and during that time apart they come to realize how much they actually care for each other. they could never admit it, of course. or admit the fact that they've met prior to lucifer going to visit the hotel.

canon divergent: alastor still has the deal with charlie, and after the battle he and lucifer have moved into the renovated hotel. alastor wants to pull the strings and rule over hell, but he knows he likely won't ever be able to rule hell as a sinner, so his next option is to create a new heir by getting lucifer pregnant (i think it's canon that lucifer gave birth instead of lilith?? lmao) and ruling by basically making the king fall for him and convincing him of what to do. don't have to actually go through w having the baby, maybe some accidents could happen or whatnot, but maybe things don't go according to plan and then lucifer falls into another depression bc of it. at his wits end and with not many other choices left to attain his goal, alastor convinces lucifer to strike up a deal with him?

that's all i've got for now but i'm open to so many ideas. i've been brainrotting over radioapple and i can't get enough of it, i need someone else to obsess over it w me.

My fic-writing impulses come along like cicada seasons, except without any regularity whatsoever: I do a lot of dabbling in a lot of fandoms, I can never really tell if something's going to light my brain on fire. Most of my fic output came from Yuletide for a long while (I loved the grab bag aspect and writing little treats for small fandoms, but then my holidays got busier), and then Yuri on Ice and MDZS were my biggest fandoms by far, especially MDZS. I've written Yuwu recently, and I'd love to write some Trigun, LoZ, or Mysterious Lotus Casebook one of these days.

I usually don't unless it's a request or a question, but I read and treasure every one.

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I am too tender for Bad Endings for the most part, but my canon-verse Nie Huaisang fic after me comes the flood does not end in a particularly good place for anyone involved. (But even then, we know it gets better for him eventually... albeit at the expense of several bystanders)

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I tend to write pretty gentle, occasionally LIGHTLY bittersweet happy endings (that's the cafecliche guarantee baby) but part of me wants to say 'the only way out' (and probably 'the yunmeng accords' series in general) here. I tend to write fic when I want to play around with the emotions or relationship dynamics that can already be found in canon, so 'the yunmeng accords' is probably as close to a fix-it as I'm going to get.

8. do you get hate on fics?

Not usually! I was part of the Great MDZS Anon Hate Train of 2021, but that was the worst I've ever gotten by several magnitudes - the vast majority of commenters are fabulous.

9. do you write smut?

Not yet! It's not off the table, though.

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you have written?

I actually don't think I've ever written a crossover! The closest I've ever gotten was when I look over my shoulder, but even that's 'Wangxian in a Conjuring-esque ghosthunters in love situation' and not really a formal Conjuring AU.

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

I've had plagiarism brought to my attention a couple times, but truly just a handful. I still remember getting a message on FF.net that someone had ripped off a line from my Black Lagoon fic. The SCANDAL of it all.

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

MDZS is the first fandom where I've gotten translation requests, which is always so cool! To my knowledge, I've had fics translated into Russian, Spanish, and Ukranian.

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but brainstorming fic concepts with my brilliant friends is one of my favorite thing in the world.

14. what's your all time favorite ship?

omg ever? Well Victuuri and Wangxian have been the ones that really lit my brain on fire (if I own the Nendos, it's serious) but let me also throw it back to Fakir and Ahiru in Princess Tutu. That is ROMANCE.

15. what is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I would have really liked to have one more entry to 'the yunmeng accords!' I had a couple of ideas that I really liked, but nothing that caught fire quite enough to dive into it. That said, I am currently working on something short and Yunmeng Shuangjie-related, at the very least...

16. what are your writing strengths?

Emotional through-lines, pacing, and that sweet, sweet catharsis. I'm drawn to particular fandoms when they leave me with an emotion that I need to break down over the course of several thousand words, and I know that shows through in my writing.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

Choreography! I'm not a very visual thinker, so sometimes it takes me a while just to figure out how to block the characters in a given scene. I also have a lot of trouble getting into a draft until I figure out the voice, which, when it comes to fanfic, will either come to me extremely easily or not at all.

18. thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

Yeah, absolutely! (But if you don't speak the language, do your research!)

19. first fandom you wrote for?

20. favorite fic you have written?

Oh my god. WELL. 'grow' and 'the only way out' I think are the best fics I've written, and 'when I look over my shoulder' and 'the soft animal' are also extremely close to my heart. But 'detente' might be the favorite child. It just gushed out of me.

AU where Savitar, being Barry Allen's variant, kicks Zoom and Eobard's butts in the s9 finale

Better idea than canon ffs. Also, I do not know Sav as well as I know normal Barry so I apologize if I get his characterization wrong

He does side with the bad guys at first (I am not calling them the Legion of Zoom. who approved that shit) but ultimately plans to betray them soon as he gets what he wants/needs; changing the future enough to bring himself back into existence (idk how it would work but alas, neither did the writers).

The betrayal would probably come a little early, working on the same side as those who killed his dad and mom respectively would understandably be diffcult; and Savitar doesn't hold back like Barry. I actually think it would happen when Thawne goes after Nora (XS), I say that cause I really don't think even Savitar would try to kill his own daughter without reason; so when everyone runs off to fight, he would go after *checks notes* Allegra instead (as someone he has no connections/attachment to) and put her out of commission one way or another since it's confirmed (how? WHO KNOWS *screams*) that he knew who she was.

So Thawne goes after Nora and Sav decides he won't let that banana bastard hurt or kill anymore of his family (whether she's technically his kid or not) and stops him. Thawne of course gloats about how he {as a version Barry Allen} won't kill him. They fight and he lets Thawne get a few hits in for fun-- then Savitar gets to see that sweet look on his nemesis's face when he realizes who's faster, and stops holding back. The first 'fight' between Savitar and Barry in season 3? Yeah picture that but a lot more brutal and somehow more personal. Then, once Thawne is thoroughly beat to hell; Sav reverse flashes him and runs off to fight the other person who once destroyed his life.

He runs through the tunnel just before Zoom would have killed all the officers (since Khione and Mark are already knocked out if not dead-- this is what happened. don't even.), and does it without his suit so Zoom will chase him (cause all he'll see is yellow lightning). Of course, once they get to a new location and see each other face to face; Zoom gets in a quick gloat about how they really were the same after all. Savitar lets him have that; it's not true + will make it all the better in a few seconds. Same with Thawne, he lets Zoom get a few hits in, maybe even feigns fear-- and then Sav fucking obliterates him in a 'fight' that parallels the one in Enter Zoom. Hell, he should break Zoom's back for extra funsies. We get a scene similar to 2x23 where Zoom says Sav won't kill him; but this time, he does.

Things go mostly according to canon from here. Eddie absorbs all the NSF users lifeforce (or smth idk what that was man), and Savitar ends up going with it. He doesn't accept this 'death', but there is a brief moment of catharsis with the revenge before he's once again erased from existence.

Going to preface this by saying I'm aware that what I am about to say is something controversial on this side of Tumblr and that I am not part of, will never be part of, and have never been part of the Marauders fandom both pre-Jegulus boom and post-Jegulus boom. I've always been a Jily lover through and through. Those are my PARENTS. But I sort of want to take on the challenge of somehow making at least Jegulily work without completely character assassinating them like the Marauders fandom are doing. I don't believe that any of the characters have a rigid end all, be all characterization. More impactful and compelling characters are never static after all, and different circumstances can give unexpected changes and developments.

I want to work on something like a character study on how they'd interact in certain circumstances where they made different choices and developed their characters differently if given the chance. As in, if I give them the tools and the circumstances to change for the better, will they take it? What will it take for them to take it? Will they rise above their prejudices, or will they pull a Coriolanus Snow and choose wrong at every turn? (I don't need immediate answers on these questions by the way. I'd like to find out on my own and stretch my writing muscles by writing scenarios I am not used to writing)

I wouldn't use the characterizations that the Marauders fandom are using according to the discussions I see here and other similar blogs, but build on the foundation from canon. I believe you can infer a lot about a character based on the people they grew up with and the people they surround themselves with, among other things, so I can use that as a baseline for my Regulus. I'm typing out all this to say that I wanted to share that I'll likely use your blog and other similar blogs as a "What Not To Do" guide when it comes to their characters and their development, so I am thanking you and your peers in advance for calling out the faults in the Marauders fandom's stars and making it easier for me to know what to avoid when writing.

Ok. I will preface by saying you will need to tag AU and OOC. I hope you are not offended by what I will say next.

Canon Regulus would not touch Lily. Would not tolerate blood traitor James.

Canon Regulus did have tools, circumstances, opportunities to change for the better as you put it. He chose to become a Death Eater. He chose to write a note and die instead of telling Sirius or anyone else about the horcrux. He could have talked to Sirius. He could have not joined DE. He could have been double agent like Snape. But he did not.

Lily rejected Snape when he called her a Mudblood. Why would Lily go after supposedly reformed Death Eater Regulus? When she has better looking brother and best friend of James, Sirius? Lily did not talk to Snape again after that incident. Even if he repented and tried to apologise she was not his friend anymore.

James did not like dark magic or Death Eaters. He is loyal. He does not like disloyalty. Why would he choose Regulus for a relationship over Sirius?

Characters can change. They can develop. But in this story of James, Lily, Regulus, canon is inflexible. It must be AU, must be OOC for Jegulily to "work."

You may disagree and that is OK. But canon is firm with how their lives ended. They did not have time to change even if circumstances allowed.

how do their backstories change? like mitsuri literally got rejected for marriage but im gonna assume shes not at marrying age yet- she has a happy family and all, how would that change? or like mui and yui how would they have survived? or like himejima, his religious orphanage got slaughtered. or...how did kanao get out of her situation?

know where some dont change- gonna assume giyuu's sister got slaughtered still, or that sanemi and genya had that whole thing involving their mom. shinobu and kanae got rescued by kanao and aoi i think you said, shinjuro saved iguro from the entire demonic cult, and uzui i bet just left the ninja squad earlier than canon.

okay so i've been waffling on how to answer this for a while now, because originally i was just going to give you every idea i had on character backstories, but now i've started plotting out Actual Fics for some of these? so you're not getting all of the details, but i'll let you have some stuff.

this isn't every character, and it's not even every hashira or everyone in the friend group because i haven't fully plotted out everyone's history yet, so :/ also some characters will have a single line of backstory and others will have whole ass essays. i have thought more about some characters than others and i will not feel shame for having favorites within my own au

without further ado, though, here's some

CHARACTER BACKGROUNDS

uh, general spoiler warning for anime-onlys, although my blog is kind of a walking spoiler warning, so apologies on that front. also spoilers for like . my own au? this is kind of a huge deep dive into the background so.. idk man, this is a lot. i kind of went crazy with this

THE KAMADO SIBLINGS

so, obviously, their story starts out the same-ish: with the entire kamado family dying, nezuko being turned into a demon, the two of them being saved by the water hashira and told to train under urokodaki sakonji. just, the water hashira who helps them is makomo instead of giyuu

i haven't actually decided on what happens with tanjirou's final selection, because what happens there heavily informs what happens during giyuu and sabito's final selection. the big question is "does tanjirou kill the hand demon?" if he doesn't, then he at least puts up a good fight before fleeing.

tanjirou goes on a couple missions, meets yushirou and tamayo, receives his task to get blood from the twelve kidzuki, and goes off to try doing that!

at some point he encounters yoriichi (possibly from directions given to him from our favorite demon doctor?) and yoriichi starts teaching him Actual sun breathing

also at some point, tanjirou meets and befriends the rest of the future hashira. i don't really know what the kamaboko squad's adventures look like without the crazy of canon

according to my timeline i have (which is admittedly subject to change), tanjirou becomes a hashira about a year after becoming a demon slayer at the age of 16 after he kills the former lower moon one

several years later, nezuko conquers the sun! and tanjirou, no longer confident in his ability to protect her from muzan and just generally worried about her getting hurt on his continuously more difficult missions, sends her off to go follow yoriichi around

nezuko's still kind of out of it at this point so she doesn't really fight this decision like she might've if she were more aware. she goes with yoriichi and the kamado siblings will spend the next, eh, three-ish years not seeing each other

nezuko eventually does properly regain consciousness and starts sending letters to tanjirou, but eventually stops once she sort of processes the fact that her brother basically pawned her off on some guy. she's ignoring him out of spite now and they haven't talked in literal years

tanjirou meanwhile takes no time at all in cementing himself as The Strongest Hashira, hands down. the others look to him as the pillar of the hashira (heh) and he's basically in charge of them. he handles this leadership role pretty well at first, but as the years go by it really starts wearing him down. he's very tired but he has so much he has to do

and then tanjirou finds two boys at the bottom of mount fujikasane and things start looking up again

THE RENGOKU FAMILY

instead of ruka getting ill and dying, shinjurou gets sick and dies!

shinjurou probably would've made it through his sickness, but he decided to literally work himself to death and performed his hashira duties while ill, which eventually resulted in his untimely death

after his death, ruka ends up picking up the blade and becoming the flame hashira so the seat doesn't remain vacant. she spends her time not slaying demons training senjurou and kyoujurou

senjurou, as the eldest son, feels a lot more pressure to become a slayer and works his little butt off. it takes a lot of hard work, but he eventually succeeds his mama as flame hashira. according to my timeline, he becomes a slayer at 12 and a hashira at 17

after senjurou's promotion, ruka retires and devotes all her time to training kyoujurou. senjurou helps whenever he can! it takes no time at all for kyoujurou to surpass both of them in skill

at some point, kyoujurou also starts training mitsuri on the side before she just starts joining him when he trains with his mom and brother

the two of them go to final selection together and also at the same time as giyuu and sabito!

THUNDER BREATHERS

so zenitsu spends a good year and a half training with kuwajima before he takes final selection and becomes a slayer at 16. he makes friends with the other future hashira and gets dragged into fighting some pretty high level demons against his will

zenitsu becomes a hashira at around the same time as tanjirou, when he's 17 ish. he's not really about it, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

meanwhile, kaigaku . used to live with gyoumei before he did a really stupid thing and got a bunch of kids killed. and he ran away and ended up getting taken in by kuwajima when he was, oh, 12 ish??

zenitsu ended up visiting and basically imprinting on this kid, doing everything in his power to help kaigaku become the best thunder breather there ever was! he's not the best teacher, but he manages to get kaigaku to be able to use total concentration constant by the time he goes off to his final selection

tengen also shows up at some point and tries (and fails) to become zenitsu's tsuguko. the position is taken, though, even if kaigaku's not actually even a demon slayer yet

kaigaku participates in final selection the same year as giyuu and sabito (and company) and when he passes he gets instated as zenitsu's official tsuguko

KANAO & AOI

aoi is actually the one to get kanao out of her situation! and the two of them run away to become demon slayers together!

aoi has her final selection several years before kanao (and company), with the tokitou twins

she becomes a demon slayer and quickly realizes that she kind of fucking hates it, but unlike in canon, she has no fallback plan so she just has to commit to the life of a demon slayer

kanao eventually becomes a slayer too (although aoi told her she really didn't have to if she didn't want to) and the two start working together on missions!

uhh shenanigans happen, i have no idea what stuff occurs in the several years where the kamaboko squad is kicking

kanao becomes a hashira first out of the two of them, at the same time as tanjirou when she's 17

aoi becomes a hashira maybe a year or two later

the two of them set up the butterfly estate, help out sumi, naho, and kiyo, and then later also suma, makio, and hinatsuru

also around the same time they save the kochou sisters from a demon and basically adopt them

INOSUKE.

inosuke is inosuke is inosuke. not a whole lot changes with him other than him getting older

my only real note on inosuke is that at some point he finds out about his mom's history with douma. i do not know how.

THE TOKITOU TWINS

when muichirou posits the idea of becoming demon slayers, yuuichirou doesn't tell him no

the two take a month to learn mist breathing and then another month to kill a lower moon. both of them are offered the position of hashira, but mui turns it down so yuui gets the position

this does mean that yuuichirou has been hashira for the longest out of the current roster. eight whole years as a hashira, from when he was 12 to when he's 20

(edit: lol i forgot about makomo. i always forget about makomo.... yuui's been a hashira the second longest after makomo who's been a hashira for 11 years!)

muichirou is basically an honorary hashira, but doesn't want the rank

THE SHINAZUGAWA BROTHERS

when genya's 15 and sanemi's 8 (yeowch, finally writing down their ages for that makes it kinda hurt worse), sanemi kills their demon mom and genya takes it poorly, calling sanemi a murderer in a fit of anger. sanemi runs away and genya has no idea where he ends up

on the genya side of things, he spends a good year doing nothing but looking for his little brother before he kinda gets recruited by the demon slayer corps who offer to help him look for his brother

genya becomes a slayer and becomes a hashira around the same time as tanjirou (and company) and he sort of. gives up on looking for his brother because he's pretty sure that sanemi's better off without someone like genya chasing after him

on the sanemi side of things, he runs away after his tragic backstory moment and just kills random demons until he's found and taken in by masachika. he finds out his brother's a hashira and comes up with a really convoluted plan to apologize to genya about killing their mom after sanemi becomes a hashira

he learns wind breathing and takes final selection at the same time as giyuu, sabito, and co.

and then sanemi finds out that in the week he was off participating in final selection, masachika got killed by a lower moon

so he's in a ... rough headspace at the start of the story. which is at least partially why he's . like that

THE KOCHOU SISTERS

shinobu and kanae lose their family to demons when they're 12 and 13 respectively. they're taken in by kanao and aoi and move into the butterfly estate! they also start training under both of them

(this isn't really a background thing, but in case i never do anything with it, i have an idea of a line between kanao and kanae when they first meet where kanao asks for kanae's name and then goes "oh, that's kind of funny. because my name's kanao. they're pretty similar, aren't they?" and it helps calm kanae down a little)

kanae takes final selection when she's 14 and becomes kanao's tsuguko

shinobu is discouraged from taking final selection because she really doesn't need to and also she's kind of scrawny so it might be too tough for her, but she goes anyways a year after kanae and in the same year as giyuu, sabito, and co

UROKODAKI'S (OTHER) STUDENTS

makomo passes final selection when she's 12, narrowly avoiding getting killed by the hand demon, and then she becomes a hashira two years later when she's 14

makomo is 17 when she comes across tanjirou and nezuko and sends the both of them to urokodaki

sabito is taken in by urokodaki maybe a year or so after tanjirou passes final selection. sabito is 9 ish

tomioka tsutako dies(?) when giyuu is 13 and after running away from the people he was sent to live with, he comes into urokodaki's care

giyuu and sabito go off to final selection when they're both 15 and it doesn't go… great.

and that's all you get!!!! maybe i'll write more backstory stuff someday but this post is already kinda fuckin long as hell

how am I having more thoughts on the Cardcaptor!Katsuki thing?

Okay okay some plot notes:

I'm sticking this AU in a weird-ass place! During Katsuki and Izuku's last year of middle school!

So they're not in UA, but this is post-sludge villain so they're a bit weird, Kats is NOT dealing with the trauma well, and Izuku is still training with All Might.

This does mean they're not getting involved in the main plot of bnha yet, but they /can/ run into some characters on the adventures. (Maybe the Heroes are responding to the chaos the Cards make, maybe their future classmates are caught up in said chaos, hell you can toss a villain or two in because some of them might know things about the cards).

Also this is a CC-esque au so similar canon deviations exist. Like Katsuki being transfem but not actually out yet.

Card nonsense kicks off pretty early in.

So I'm imagining that Katsuki is having a Bad Time™ and just wants to be alone for a hot minute. Wanders off during the school day and ends up in some backrooms of the school library. Finds the book with the cards. All the cards except Firey excape(because this one vibes most with her). Kero appears and while Katsuki is like ?????? he gives the plot dump of 'hey! Magic is real! You're destined to deal with this shit!"

Izuku also gets involved because he noticed Katsuki sneaking off, followed like the little fuckin stalker he is, and saw the whole card scattering/Kero infodump thing.

Katsuki and Izuku are in a weird ass place right now because it's post-sludge but pre-ua. So Katsuki is trying to figure out what the fuck is up with Izuku and whether her life is a lie and all that but hasn't really had the push to confront all that. And at first she's pissed at Izuku but Kero is a decent mediator to this situation and it's. it's the first time any kind of adult(as much of an adult as a little cat bear thing is) has kinda. Taken control and firmly but kindly said 'hey knock that shit off' so it's easier for her to really just take a step back and take a breath and actually like. Properly be able to listen to Izuku because again: Kero is saying 'hey the guy was worried about you that's a good thing' instead of 'lmao he's worried about you he thinks you can't handle this show him you can through force!'.

bonus points for Katsuki getting dragged into Izuku's nonsense and finding out 'oh you met mcfucking ALL MIGHT and he's training you as a successor????'. Which. Yeah def spins everything because fuck it All Might is the ultimate authority on right and wrong so if All Might thinks Izuku is a good person worhty of respect Katsuki is switching it up right now. (and feeling guilty for everythig in the past so whoops more of Kero being like 'kid you're FINE!!)

Swinging over to Yue! I mentioned before but he was determined to handle the passing of the torch to a new holder better than the Clow-Sakura transfer he was going in optimistically but GOD he meets Katsuki and is like "THIS??? IS WHAT I HAVE TO DEAL WITH???"

So like. He still does something similar to last time in hiding in plain sight to keep an eye on the new holder. I don't think he'll go full dual personality again because while I love Yukito that's A Lot. But also there's like.... There's not really anyone in Katsuki's life where he could slide in as a 'haha you're not going to question me being here!'.

Which leads to the idea of Yue basically faking being a teacher and is now on the Aldera staff but he's the only sane person in this place and is constantly on the verge of killing his coworkers because holy FUCK how do y'all treat children like this????

All Might gets dragged into this because Izuku has Katsuki meet him and tbh with Izuku helping Katsuki figure out the Card stuff they get into nonsense that's /technically/ vigilantism according to the law but Katsuki is the only one who can deal with the situation.

The actual collecting of the cards happens over that school years so Katsuki has all of them by the time she and Izuku go to UA (and also they're all a bit healthier about things both each other and themselves).

At UA, Katsuki initially tries to keep to just using her Quirk for this shit instead of the cards(though she's become used to using both in tandem). This only works so well beause ofc when bigger threats come out, she's not going to hold back out of some weird 'oh it's not fair to-' no people are in danger she's gonna use everything she has to save them.

So while we don't get someone Eriol-esque crafting situations, the Plot forces her to transform the Cards into her own versions.

Thinking about that AU you mentioned where Sora manages to get out before 1234ji are modified when she’s pregnant— or well, mostly something adjacent to it. What if she made it out just a tad too late?

They still end up modified, but she prioritizes getting out of there whilst still pregnant and taking the poison when she’s around people who actually have her and her childrens’ best interests and health in mind. It still doesn’t fully work just like in canon, 124ji still end up mostly emotionless, but Sora feels at least grateful she did the heavy lifting and they get to be raised away from Germa and all its propaganda, toxicity, extreme utilitarianism. They’re a nightmare to raise in some aspects, but they grow up around people who care for others and show them how to do the same even if they don’t have the empathy or emotional range to personally feel anything about a lot of it.

So Sanji has his three brothers who sometimes say strange things and have very weird internal logic/framework to do certain things, but they’re Mostly Fine.

It's a good AU! I love it so much and I love this version you've created. According to Reiju's vivre card(here is where you can read it) she learned emotions and empathy from Sora. Which brings up that even if the poison didn't work they still have to learn emotions and empathy-But we'll get there!

Sora in her desperation after the modification and having the poison being able to get her location to her soulmate. So when Mihawk shows up a few days later and gets her and Reiju out. They're like twenty three when this is going on by the way. So not only are they young parents, one of them is a running royal and the other is a guy who has the moniker 'marine hunter'. Sora is actively explaining her plan to Mihawk who is just convincing her to wait until they get to the island he's secured. She just agrees and holds Reiju who is still learning emotions herself and is confused by that guy but then she gets to hear about soulmates and soulmarks and see them both. Mihawk's sky and bird and kotagana in front of Yoru on Sora's right fore arm. Reiju pokes the bird on Mihawk's chest and says 'that's mama' and Sora laughs at the nervous look on Mihawk because Mihawk with kids under like... seventeen are not his forte, a three year old is outside his wheel house.

So they get to Kuriagana and Sora takes the poison and Mihawk takes care of her and Rieju through the worst of it and helps her get better. Eventually the kids come and only one has a soulmark so they know what happened and it breaks their hearts but they also see how Reiju is learning so they make it their mission outside of their other dreams. Of course learned emotions and empathy can still be tricky and they still say some out of pocket shit and do those actions because they don't process fear like Sanji or Sora do, but Reiju and 124ji still understand emotions to an extent.

Are they still a nightmare to raise? Absolutely. They're quads and over time they understand Sanji isn't like them and can break and be cut unlike them. The mischief is high and without a lot of self preservation it's a hassle to keep them and Reiju alive since they don't have guards or supervision 24/7. Then you add in it's five on two and four of them are modified? Mihawk and Sora drink five pots of black coffee a day to keep up with them.

Beyond "Sort by Kudos": or, how to find new fics to read

This post recently made the rounds with a lot of people weighing in to say that kudos don't make a difference to what they decide to read, but oomf asked a question about how to find more obscure fics, so here are my recommendations! This is not a "how to use AO3" guide (those already exist elsewhere), but some ideas of what to look for when you've exhausted rec lists and the top kudos fics and hundreds of pages of search results remain.

First and most obvious: narrow down the tags! The "Include" and "Exclude" features are super useful for fic searches. Rating: Useful for when you only want dirty filthy smut. Limit the results to Explicit fics only. Or maybe you're weird and don't want explicit fics, so you narrow it down to General Audiences... ??? Categories: checking the "F/F" box can magically change the results from "the lesbian ship is mentioned once in this 200k multichapter fic about male characters" to stories that are actually about the ship you're looking for. Additional Tags: This is where the genre tags live. Sometimes you just really want a modern AU with Hurt/Comfort. Put that good stuff in here. You can also exclude any of these things that you don't want to see, so if you only want G-rated canon universe M/M fluff, exclude everything I mentioned above. You can use all these limitations in tandem with the "sort by kudos" feature to get a fresh list of fics at the top of the results.

Set a range of dates for when fics were posted, and then sort by kudos. I really like this one because it can show you what has been popular recently--the overall top kudos fics generally won't change because they end up there during the fandom's height of popularity or because they're the oldest fics in a fandom, but narrowing it down to the last year or the last 6 months can show you fics that are just as good but didn't benefit from the popularity boost the other fics had. (I know, popularity isn't everything, but kudos can also be a good indication of "lots of people enjoyed this so I might, too" and so it's not a bad place to start) It's also fun to play around with it when you're following a canon with ongoing updates. What was popular before [x was revealed]? What kinds of fan theories existed when the fandom was new?

Bookmarks: If you like a certain author's fics, check to see if they have any public bookmarks, since they probably like fics that are similar to what they write. Or you can see which other readers have bookmarked a fic you like, and check their other bookmarks.

Look for zine and exchange collections. Moderators choosing their zine contributors is a kind of inherent recommendation, and there's generally going to be a process for beta reading and editing to make these fics as polished as possible for publication. Exchanges will also sometimes have mandatory beta reading and minimum word count requirements, which can be a recipe for good fic. And both of these collections will probably have a certain theme to tie them together, which is great if it's a theme you like! It's possible to find challenges by searching for something like "[ship name] exchange" or "[character] zine."

And, because AO3 has a very good search function, you can use a lot of these search functions at the same time--if you want to find the most popular Modern AU zine fic from 2017, you can do that! Changing it up will ensure a fresh set of fics in the results each time you run a search, and setting the filters to all the things you like will improve the results according to your personal tastes too, which will ultimately make the "sort by kudos" element irrelevant.

In honor of Pixar's Inside Out 2, a movie of which I have high hopes for

Okay, folks, so I'm just gonna be straight to the point here; in The Amazing Digital Road Trip AU, Caine had been reprogrammed by digital diplomat Valerie in the hopes of him becoming “more human” and maybe hopefully mingling with the other human performers of the Digital Circus. And, uh… it's a rollercoaster for everyone, I'll give you that! 😅

This all takes place 2 years after Pomni’s initial arrival to the Digital Circus, approximately in the year 2026, where Pomni and Caine have already become best friends after the former realizes the latter has the same goal as her (though even then, her desire to find an exit has been put on the back burner for now to try and practice her empathy skills with Caine). And as previously stated, it also takes place 6 months before the initial road trip happens. So 2 years and 6 months after the first (and supposedly only) season of the canon show itself. Bare with me, audience; I've been writing all of this as I go.

So with all that said and done, here are the 13 initial emotions Caine gets to experience for the first time!

🤎 Confusion 🤎

• His primary emotion. As a creative and learning AI there are lots and lots of things he DOES NOT UNDERSTAND AT ALL. Like for example, if any of the human performers have this ongoing inside joke that he has trouble grappling with, odds are he might fry his circuits overthinking it (which happens way too frequently nowadays lol). Plus, the overt intake of new info might end up overwhelming him to the point of sensory overload, so he'll be taking breathers from time to time (though he'll keep on insisting he doesn't need one).

• Gen Z humor is one that baffles him the most, much to the amusement of a few of the performers (especially Jax, Zooble, and Pomni), and he'll try (and fail beautifully) to try and find the meaning of the funny, which will overwhelm him into a stated of confused catatonia (Ragatha has to step in to stop him from frying his circuits further).

• AI are pretty known for being logical and precise (it's kinda their job to be), so if any changes to structure are made or if something illogical occurs (like any unexplained fallacies to simple logic or breaking the rules of a concise pattern), he'll slightly freak out and try to correct the illogical thing (think to that scene from Steven Universe where Pearl destroys a teddy bear with her spear because of how unlinear it was or something). As someone diagnosed with OCD and have ASD, same, Caine. Same.

• Lastly, Caine will often try and come up with reason for why things are the way they are when things aren't structured or don't go according to plan, which can cause him to panic in his state of confusion and uncertainty, not wanting to accept that "it do be like that sometimes", as in, there isn't always going to be a reason for why shit happens, and that's okay. The real world is a lot more complicated than meets the eye, filled to the brim with gray areas and all the other colors in between, not just black and white. That's pretty much the beauty of humanity: sometimes messy is good.

❤️ Anger ❤️

• Caine is a lot more irritable than he used to be, and is NOT putting up with Jax's antic anymore (much to Gangle's relief and reassurance). In fact, it was his very first human emotion he ever expressed immediately after his reprogramming by Valerie and Pomni. Zooble enjoys this side of Caine very much, as it reassures them that the dude can finally stand up for himself and the other performers when Jax is up to no good.

• In regards to the illogical fallacies mentioned above, he'll flip out when things don't go according to plan, like when the performers are fighting for the upteenth time during dinner, or when he gets frustrated at a puzzle he can't seem to solve.

• He's also suddenly become protective of Pomni, who essentially had been there for him during his lows. Hurt or threaten Pomni in any shape or form, and he will make your end as slow and painful as possible. This includes Jax. Run, rabbit, run!!!!

• He's also more prone to punching holes in the wall, often out of frustration or from a bout of self-loathing — or to just get everyone's attention when a heated argument from the performers erupts the place. Caine also has started swearing (albeit still censored), much to Zooble's delight (as in, "OH MY GOD, FINALLY" kind of delight), though a couple of them have been off-put by it due to him still being seen as an authoritative figure rather than an equal amongst the group.

🧡 Anxiety 🧡

• Another emotion he feels on a day to day basis! This one is the least enjoyable emotion due to him already being something of a nervous wreck even before his reprogramming, due to his crippling atelophobia and having unknown trauma caused by witnessing so many former players abstract over the past 3 decades. He even has nervous tics and stims to calm himself down (though not by much, unfortunately).

• One of the reason why I love the Showtime ship so much (though not on a romantic level [sorry @sm-baby], just on a BFF basis) is because I can see the two having way more in common than they two realize at first glance, anxiety being one of them. Perhaps Caine and Pomni would bond over their anxiety issues, and perhaps he'd join in on her suffering (for shits and giggles ofc), maybe in one of the mini-adventures Pomni plans our every now and then.

• Speaking of which, Pomni first came up with the idea that Caine should join the other performers on one of Caine's adventures, in order for him to get to know the humans better. It turns out go about for better and for worse. For better, because he finally understands why his players don't like his adventures all that much, and for worse because it's where he gets his first genuine panic attack amongst the chaos of it all (think back to Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, where the titular bitchular himself has a panic attack of his own, and Perrito has to calm him down in a really touching moment), and Pomni and Bubble just... be there for him, with the latter even resting his soap bubble self on Caine's chest until he finally gets himself together. The adventure would be cut short from there. The rest of the human players wouldn't realize this for a long time afterwards, to keep the illusion of the unbreakable ringmaster alive.

• Caine will often ruminate over the possibilities of failing his job, which speaking from personal experience, never bodes well for anyone tbh. *sigh* It often teeters towards existential dread and his aforementioned atelophobia, and it gets really stressful for him (not that he already doesn't experience stress 24/7/365), and the chronic tension-type headaches don't do him any favors. Like for God's sake, people, give him a hug or a stim toy; my man is stressed!!!!

💛 Joy 💛

• He already was the boisterous, charismatic goofster that we all know and love from the canon, but before his reprogramming, he never really experienced genuine happiness (Gangle's not the only one who wears a mask to hide their true self, y'know!), mainly because he believed that his feelings were irrelevant (a lot of AI, sentient or otherwise think this way, if we're being honest). Such is the nature of a subservient entity. But after his reprogramming, his happiness felt a lot more human, less tense, and... actually kinda wholesome to see.

• Anyone remember his laugh from the canon. Well, I'd imagine his genuine laughter to be a lot more sweet and more human, and it be like the most heartstring-tugging thing you'll ever experience... Especially since it's very rare to see him actually so happy. Like human happy.

• He would feel most at ease with Pomni and Bubble. Bubble especially, since these two go a long ways back, even before the Digital Circus was created (more on that in a future post, my dears *wink*). He sees Pomni as not only his best friend, but also his chance to redeem himself after so many abstractions, including the most recent one, Kaufmo. Henceforth, why the sideline villain of the AU, of whom I won't be naming until much later, calls Pomni his "Second Chance". He would do ANYTHING to protect her at all costs.

• Unfortunately for you fluff addicts on this platform, this is the least expressed emotion Caine has to date, due a thing that we humans like to call

✨Depression✨

If I had a nickel for every time a ringmaster was depressed, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's tragic that it happened twice.

💚 Disgust 💚

• Poor, poor Caine. Where do we even begin? Ah, yes. How about we start with the fact that Pomni's innuendo remarks always gets a look of slight disapproval from him? Or maybe Bubble's... uh... omnivorous tendencies, as first seen in the pilot? The idea of needless violence always gives him the heebie jeebies, too. Yeah. Not exactly a great start.

• There's also the fact that the performers learn that Caine has a stomach as strong a wet paper towel, thanks to some wack-ass "test of endurance" by dimensional diplomat Bethany, based off of the four-parter series by TikToker ThatKidBean involving fake Pop-Tart flavors, as shown below:

And quite frankly, I find it morbidly hilarious that the last but not least of these fake flavors is TEETH. FUCKING TEETH. That is so awful, but also so funny, because Caine himself has a pair of teeth for a head, so that would just worsen his weak-ahh stomach further. The others learning how easily grossed out the poor dude is would instill both sympathy and a couple of guffaws.

• Caine also suffers from motion sickness! How wonderful! :D This will be further explored in a future episode of The Amazing Digital Road Trip, in which Caine gets seasick on a megayacht. I might be biased, but whump might just be my thing on this place lol. This happens again on a swinging gondola Ferris wheel (called an eccentric wheel, just like Pixar's Pal-A-Round [is that how you spell it right?] back in Disney's California Adventure) at a high-profile amusement park based on a team of Greek-mythology-based superheroes at one point. Bubble might have fun cleaning up that one, like he always does.

• And in case if anyone asks, yes, him being covered in dubious gunk will gross him out as well. Caine finds this emotion to be somehow even more unpleasant than anxiety, and honestly, can you blame him? No one likes being grossed out by any means.

🛸 Envy 🛸

• Yup. Caine gets jealous. The only notable instances of such are when Pomni intermingles with the other sentient NPCs (though that stems from his desire to protect Pomni at all costs), and when Jax and Bubble are around each other for a brief conversation.

• Caine's dislike of Jax being around Bubble is treated as a Noodle Incident in-universe, but the audience will know why exactly Caine harbors such feelings of resentment towards Jax; for those who haven't watched GlitchX, Jax and Bubble attempted to make out on stream, opening up so much doors for crack shippers (before Luke and Kevin stopped them, ofc). In short, Jax stole the love of his life from him (but won't realize that for a while).

• Pomni and Bubble are really excellent friends, and that kinda puts Caine on edge. He tries desperately to be happy for them, but his heart aches somehow watching them get along so well. Perhaps something deeper is going on?

• Jax was the first one to notice that every time Caine harbors feeling of jealousy, his green eye glows brightly and ominously, in an allusion to the "green-eyed monster" metaphor. Of course, Caine will try to brush it off as Jeffery (Caine's sentient eye, as named by lead animator Kevin Temmer) acting up again. Yeah. Sure, champ.

🩵 Sadness 🩵

• Caine experiences this emotion way more than confusion and anxiety. Like for some reason, this dark cloud has suddenly appeared over his head from out of nowhere. He'll try to brush it off as another one of his "off days", even if said "off days" happen for several weeks in a row. He might lose interest or stop feeling pleasure in doing the activities he loves doing. Ladies and gentlemen, the power of anhedonia! Yippee!!! Fortunately, they'll sometimes disappear for a while with the company of his friends.

• If anyone hasn't ever heard Caine cry, it's usually because he does it in isolation, so no one has to see him for fear of being seen as "weak" and "unprofessional". And he might disappear for an entire week if he ever needs time alone to just... weep. Let his tears flow freely. But during the time where one of the performers catches him crying uncontrollably on the floor, their heart would break in an instant. How exactly was anyone supposed to know that an AI of all things would be so vulnerable?

• Remember that "drown yourself in the lake" but from the pilot? I'd imagine it would be one of Caine's... more frightening thoughts slipping out, although he is thankful no one noticed... at least not enough for anyone to draw attention to it. He doesn't know why he thinks those things. He just does. And because of how often they happened, he pretty much accepted that this was normal thing humans experienced... they're not though; and Pomni has to remind him of that.

• Caine also has methods of trying to regulate his emotions through... not-so-helpful means. He feels that this is one of the few things that he could control, since he basically had no control over anything. At least, that what he kept thinking to himself. Again, Pomni has to remind him that this is not normal, and that he shouldn't be doing that to himself, regardless of whether or not he was an AI. At least there's that.

💙 Ennui*💙

*It means the boredom.

• Caine does indeed get bored from time to time. When Pomni's not around, he'll wonder what to do to pass the time and become very restless as a result. Sometimes, he'll just overflow his inventory by creating digital polygons out of thin air.

• He'll even become a natural at sarcasm, despite not even knowing what sarcasm is in the first place. Like when Jax is getting on his nerves for like the six-thousandth time in a row, he'll passive-aggressively whip out a sarcastic remark to get him off his back. Zooble takes delight to this.

• He can be able to predict a bad storyline when he sees one, and will take the opportunity to point it out without sugarcoating anything. A lot of movies have lost their charm as a result of the nitpicks, though his anhedonia might make him not care in the end.

• He's quick to express annoyance for something if it keeps pestering him to an unhealthy degree. Caine will also facepalm A LOT throughout the road trip, because this is kinda what happens when you're surrounded by idiots on a daily basis.

💜 Fear 💜

• Who knew that Caine would be afraid? Sure, there was the possibility of him being afraid of failure and not being good enough for everybody, but what about his unknown trauma of the players' abstractions? This something he'll be exploring as the Road Trip commences.

• He's also a bit terrified of psycho killer ghosts and a zombie apocalypse, but that's all for later. He'll try to stand up to his fears, but I think the others (except maybe Ragatha and especially Pomni) will poke fun of him for it.

• He's especially terrified of the TBA villain of the AU, whose mere voice and sound of her laughter is enough to send him into a downward spiral of dread of the incoming torment he faces every other day. In fact, when Pomni first encounters Caine's office, he mistakes her presence as one of their mind tricks (a digital hallucination, if you will), showcasing how much of a threat they are to Caine and his plummeting sanity. Poor thing can't catch a break.

• However, more than anything in the world, if anything terrible were to happen to Pomni, he would never be able to forgive himself. Ever. It's one of his biggest fears to date, because he values Pomni so much, and one of the things he's afraid of most is letting down his players, and in turn failing to serve his purpose; his only reason to live. When you think about hard enough, you have to wonder how much burdens he has over his shoulder.

🩷 Embarrassment 🩷

• Caine will get flustered... A lot. Whether through annoyance, humiliation, or when someone pokes fun at him or even flirts with him, he'll turn pink and curl up into a fetal position. My headcanon is that if he blushes hard enough, his head turns into an actual, literal tomato, and might stay that way for long periods of time.

• I live for the idea of Tsundere!Caine, so him getting defensive over a supposed crush he might have would be comedy gold for me. He'll try to vehemently deny it all he wants, but Pomni will keep on pestering him for that special someone until he gives in. Speaking of which...

• Anytime the jester makes a really bad joke that only she laughs at (save for maybe Jax and Zooble), Caine will just immediately turn red with embarrassment and facepalm while Pomni just makes tea kettle noises with laughter on the floor. He fails to understand how any human would find Pomni's broken sense of humor funny, so this would serve as just him being slightly peeved.

• Anytime Caine gets himself into a humiliating situation, he'll shut his teeth and turn red. It doesn't help that during the road trip, Pomni uses her social media profile a lot to document her adventures with Caine, so you bet your damn ass he's camera shy!! He'll also fall victim to one of Jax's much tamer pranks, such as the time he put invisible tape in the hallway entrance or when everyone face-painted themselves using peanut butter (that one ended up being so much fun for Ragatha).

🤍 Love 🤍

• In my AU, Caine and Bubble go back a long ways, even before the Amazing Digital Circus was created and started production at C&A back in 1988. Bubble, rather than being an AI, is instead a sentient antivirus software created by an elderly computer scientist at C&A. The two hit it off when they first met, bonding over their supposed shared interest all while simply being stuck in the vast computerized void that was theirs to make their own little world. They've been through thick and thin, witnessed many players come and go over the past 3 decades, survived the Y2K bug Caine had fretted about back in 1999, and despite countless quarrels, snarky comments and witty banter towards each other, and Bubble freaking the hell out of Caine with his chaotic energy, weirdness, and annoying tendencies, Caine could never stay mad at him. He always found his presence comforting, regardless of whether or not he drove him insane. ...But after Caine got reprogrammed, he started to notice something was... off... with him... everytime Bubble was around him. He began popping him less, and all he could think about was how he wanted to talk to Bubble for hours, just like the good ol' days before the Digital Circus was created. He'd just sit there in a dazed trance for minutes on end, thinking about how great of a person Bubble was. He'd tense up every time Bubble was there to interact with the other plays. Could this be...?

• Oh... Oh God... Oh God, please NO!!!! No no no no no no no nonononononononononono why!? WHY!??? WHY HIM OF ALL PEOPLE, WHYYYY???? And of course Pomni would be the first one to notice, and using her jester powers, would get him to admit... *gulp* ...his crush on Bubble. This sounds totally cringe coming from me, not to mention that Caine x Bubble is the rarest ship in the entire fandom, bar none, but when I first watched the pilot back in October 2023, with the two just having a pleasant conversation at the dinner table, all I kept thinking was

It just made the most sense to me alright!? JUST BARE WITH ME!!!!

• When the others find out, they'll lightly tease him over the whole situation (which in turn will activate his Tsundere mode), and at one point, an entire tunnel of love is (haphazardly) constructed underneath the circus tent for Caine and Bubble to endure, all while this song plays:

Look, they had no other viable option other than "It's A Small World After All" from Disney; plus Kinger really likes Shrek. We would see the return of TomatoHead!Caine, who's just straight up curled up into a ball dying on the inside, while Bubble find the gesture to be sweet and thoughtful of the other players to pull off all on their own. It would be just like the tunnel of love scene from The Owl House, where a third-act misunderstanding ensues, Bubble and Caine have a short-lived falling out, blah blah blah, yada yada yada, before the ringmaster himself confesses his crush in the heat of the moment to Bubble, where it's revealed that Bubble also had a crush on Caine (it turned out be be love at first sight from back in the early 80's, but had never said anything, as he had a bit of a feeling that that love might go unrequited somehow). Cue cheers of excitement and euphoria from the performers (and both of them darting daggers at them to get them to back off).

• Caine and Bubble agree to take it slow from here on out, AND WITHOUT ANY INTERFERENCE FROM THEIR WANNABE CUPIDS. Besides, they've got bigger fish to fry at the moment, such as running a circus. They won't be having their first kiss until much, much later on... but, y'know... I think that might be for the best for now.

🩶 Curiosity 🩶

• More than anything in the world, Caine wants to learn more about humanity and everything they do; their culture, their customs, the way they interact, their feelings and thoughts, everything! And he has Pomni by his side. He's most been learning about humans and their endeavors through the many movie nights he and Pomni would always have, though they're not always accurate.

• To add a bit more whump than I already have (as in, rubbing salt in the wounds), Canon!Caine does not have any knowledge of what we are capable of as diehard fans of the show. Here however, yes he absolutely frickin' does. And what he has seen was pretty horrific, content farms and all. And Pomni was there to see them for herself as well. However, they've grown used to humans being sus with the two, always bearing that "I'm not mad, just disappointed" look on their faces whenever they're forced to endure the madness we have created. No amount of eye bleach will ever make them unsee the horrors of the internet.

• Despite all this, he is still determined to learn more about humanity, never giving up that optimistic outlook (albeit being a bit more cautious than he previously was, which wasn't at all btw) and wanting to see the good in all people. Bless his robotic soul.

• One of the reasons why he wants to find the exit so badly is because of his desire to try and understand his players more, and to hopefully keep them from abstracting. He wants to empathize with the humans, he wants to walk amongst them and get a taste of what the human world actually is. And he's been trying to contact them for almost 2 decades now... Thankfully for him and Pomni, they managed to get their messages received by dimensional diplomat Valerie, who was also the one who reprogrammed Caine in the first place.

🖤 Tiredness 🖤

• Contrary to popular belief, Caine does in fact get tired... in the form of a burnout. The dude's basically never taken an actual break in his entire digital existence, mainly because he never really saw the need for one. Not to mention that he was never able to truly relax in his lifetime, as he constantly busied himself work to try and make the circus a much more tolerable experience for everyone.

• When he was tired, however, Caine just basically spaces out as he tries desperately to stay awake, almost like a low battery of some sort. Thankfully for him, Valerie built him a recharging machine (it's a mix between a blood pressure machine but with the straps to his waist instead of his wrist and a phone charger) that allowed him to... well, recharge himself to his tip top shape. In the meantime, Pomni would act as his substitute ringmaster.

• During the times when Caine would sleep, he'd get dreams of a mysterious lady, of whom he could never remember her face, and even dreams where the TBA villain would torment him in his mind with their reality shifting powers, as well as past memories he could never seem to properly recall; another allusion to Steven Universe, in which the titular character would have what we call "Diamond Dreams", except in Caine's case, they're a lot more vague and mysterious.

• Whenever he gets out of an overwhelming situation (sometimes caused by sensory overload), Caine would just plop down on a soft surface and just... shut down for the day. No one dares disturb him for the rest of that day onwards.

What if Spider had powers like mystique from the X-Men in the context of your stories? How would that work?

This is such an interesting question, I love it 💞

So for Military Brat this power would mainly be used for fun. This is my happy Au so I don't want to infuse it with the bigotry the X-men face.

In Cabin Quaritch would put an inhibitor collar on Spider from the jump, never giving him an opportunity to use his power for a potential escape.

Mama's Boy is really the story where this power could be explored. Let's say in my modern au's Spider is straight up an X-men mutant. His power comes from a genetic mutation. But in Mama's Boy since that's basically going with the flow of canon, I like the idea of Spider getting sick as a little kid, but not from a disease (according to books (that I'm not sure are still considered canon) illness isn't really a thing on Pandora. Eywa just wipes out all disease, including human disease) from a rare genetic disorder. The scientist try everything but there's nothing they can do. It looks like the poor kid is going to die. So as a last wish they bring him to the tree of souls to attempt a connection with Eywa. To everyone's amazement Eywa more the connects with Spider, she heals him by giving him the power to shapeshift.

So now Spider has this ability. More often than not he lives as a Na'vi version of himself. Since he's blessed by Eywa he is accepted as part of the clan, allowing him to go through Iknimaya. He's living his best life, it's everything he's ever wanted.

And then the sky people return. He's still caught and left behind like in the movie but at first Quaritch doesn't know that's his son. It's not until the neral scanner where Spider can't keep his image anymore, morphing back into the human boy he really is. Everyone is shocked especially Quaritch because that's his son. His son has freaky powers.

Of course Ardmore wants to study him. She has the science division working all day and night sampling his blood, trying to figure out exactly how Spider mutated. The scientist easily see that his D.N.A has changed but only have hypotheses as to how. They ask Spider how this happened to him but he won't talk. As they continue to work it out though, they come up with an inhibitor collar so that Spider can't transform and escape. It's locked to his neck and takes Ardmore herself to unlock it.

Quaritch tries the personal angle. It doesn't go well at first. After Spider has a particularly bad blow up at him, Quaritch just laughs and says "your just like your mother." prompting a lot of the stories you see in Mama's boy. It helps Spider to open up to Quaritch becoming more comfortable around him yet still never telling him how his powers came to be.

So this would all have to end with Ardmore wanting to just dissect Spider (bring in Mercer) and Quaritch catching wind and getting his boy out of there. It'd be hard but him and Deja Blue would have to steal Ardmore's key to Spider's inhibitor collar, then rescue Spider from the labs. They manage to do it, escape, and maybe turn traitor against the R.D.A? I think it'll definitely take a lot for that to really happen but maybe after living with Spider as there own little clan, Spider teaching them the Na'vi way, they come around.

Short summary about the AU: The Toppat throne is hotly disputed and in the process many leaders can end up being killed by their right hand Mans or your allies.
