Acrobatics of the Heart
...I should be sleeping
but I am plagued with an idea for Dick/Danny (Green Elephants? Death Defying? Dead Circus? Whichever is the ship's name.)
Just a meet-cute where Danny is the cute new single dad in Bludhaven and Dick is his daughter Ellie's (Dani) Gymnastics Teacher.
Cause (19 to 20-year-old) Danny moved to Gotham for a new start/college and the fact that Dani (now Ellie) is now like five years old (her actual age) instead of being physically a few years younger than him. So basically new start, portal has been dismantled and Danny has a mini-portal for needing to pop into the ghost zone for king business. Right now he just wants to get his engineering degree, cause I stan Danny Is Smart.
Dick quit the police force (RIC NEVER HAPPENED CAUSE FUCK THAT TIMELINE) and becomes a gymnastics/acrobatics teacher at the local (newly rebuilt thanks to Bruce Wayne) Recreation Center and teaches ages 5 and up. A new year, a new group of Little AcroBats for Dick to teach!
He is rather fond of little Ellie Nightingale, she is a little gremlin that kinda reminds him of Jason when he was younger. She's a little spitfire, and he somehow misses meeting her parent during pick up and drop off.
Until Ellie finally drags Danny over to meet her favorite teacher, Mr. Grayson!

Ikevil Male Leads in a Job interview
WARNING: This is a joke, please don't act like this in your actual interview!
Liam:
Interviewer: "Tell me about yourself."
Liam: "My name is Liam Evans. I'm a stage actor for the past X no. of years and also works as assassin behind the scenes. I was forcefully put into a mental hospital at a very young age after I was accused of killing my parents and my butler and also burning my family mansion. Due to this, I get frequent episodes where I go completely crazy and do things out of curiosity."
Interviewer: *WTF!!?*
William:
Interviewer: "What are your strengths and weakness?"
William: "Well...I can give orders to people and force them to do whatever I want by just looking into their eyes."
Interviewer: ".........Are you implying that you possess, leadership skills?"
William: "I won't necessary call it a leadership skill because I love seeing people being free and being the master of their own actions."
Interviewer: "..........."
Interviewer: "..........O-Okay, then what are your weaknesses?"
William: "Strawberries."
Interviewer: "........."
William: "....fufu....I'm sorry, that's the only thing I can't share?"
Harrison:
Interviewer: "So Mr Harrison, why do want this job?"
Harrison: "Honestly, I just wanna a job because I want to avoid going to home because there is this annoying old man in house who constantly gives me tasks in the name of Queen Victoria."
Interviewer: "....Was it supposed to be a joke?"
Harrison: "You tell me. Am I lying or saying the true?" *takes out his strawberry milk can*
Interviewer: ".........."
Elbert:
Interviewer: "So Mr. Greetia, how do you put an elephant inside a refrigerator?"
Elbert: "..............Does putting an elephant inside...makes it beautiful?"
Interviewer: "Excuse me?"
Elbert: "I have preserved many animal skins before.......but never an elephant. .....Do you think an elephant is beautiful...?"
Interviewer: "..........Ha?"
Alphonse:
Interviewer: "Can you work under pressure?"
Alphonse: "Of course. Not only working under pressure, I can also help others in my team to work effectively."
Interviewer: "Oh, how?"
Alphonse: "I can give them blissful dreams to help them relieve their stress."
Interviewer: "B-Blissful dreams...?"
Alphonse: "Want to find out? *removes his gloves* Let's have fun together, shall we?"
Interviewer: "NO!" *runs away*
Roger:
Interviewer: "Can you tell me about a time you had to deal with an unsatisfied customer?"
Roger: "As a part of my job, I do encounter various types of patients. But there is this one bastard who is always ungrateful. He's my regular customer and always comes to me for check up and no matter how much I work hard to treat his injuries and lung problems, this son of bitch calls me a quack and then smokes right in front of me! After I treated his lungs! Seeing him makes me wanna pull out my gun, shoved it his mouth and shoot him. But I have to control myself because I'm a doctor."
Interviewer: ".............."
Roger: "Your heart rate is fast....are you okay?"
Ellis:
Interviewer: "So tell me why you quit your last job?"
Ellis: "Well....I was doing a contract job with my previous employer. But no matter how much I tried, I just couldn't make my boss happy."
Interviewer: ".....................Huh?"
Interviewer: "E-Excuse me...what kind of job were you doing before?"
Ellis: "I was working in a trading company as my boss's assistant and carry out whatever orders my boss gives me. It could range from simple collections to straight up assassination and cleaning up. But no matter how much I worked hard, my efforts couldn't bear a fruit. I couldn't make my boss happy....*sad face*
Intervierwer: "E....Erm...."
Ellis: "Will you give me a job here? I promise I'll make you the happiest person in this entire world." *smiles*
Interviewer: *runs away feeling embarrassed*
Ellis: "Did I make them sad too?" *sad face*
Jude:
Interviewer: "Phew....that was a lot...In my entire career, I have never interviewed a bunch of weirdos....*sighs* please call the next---"
*gunshot*
Interviewer: "WHAT THE HELL!? Was that a gunshot!?"
*Door opens*
CEO: "Please! please help me! He's after my life!"
Jude: "Where's that bastard who stole my money? You think you can steal my money and get away huh? Now how should I punish you?"
CEO: "Mr. Jude....please...I'm sorry...I just wanted to start my own company..."
Jude: "If you wanted to start your own company, you should have done it with your own money, you jackass. *lights his cigarette while standing in front of the 'no smoking' sign board* Tch....Usually, I would let Ellis handle these kinds of errands, but now I have to do it myself."
Interviewer: (Wait....so this guy was Ellis's...previous boss)
Jude: *Shots the CEO in the head*
Jude: "Now I'm taking over your company. Since it's technically build from my money" *laughs manically*
Interviewer: *faints*
Jude: "Hm? *looks at the fainted interviewer* What the?"

“Celi, did you just die or something? Lydia and I are waiting for you!”
With her hands resting on the sink and head down, Celine didn't know how she was thinking. Feeling extremely exposed as 'Satine', she breathed heavily while remembering every moment of the day. When she least realized it, she was on her knees.
“It's just a stomachache, Ellie! You two can start the movie!”
The credits of ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ started to be shown on the TV.
“Just explain it to me again. You saw her running out of there, right?”
“Yeah, I was going back to the auditorium and I saw the girl coming out of the dressing room, so I took a photo. What was her name?’’
“Abigail.’’ Lydia says, rolling her eyes and with apparent disgust in her voice. “But let's change the topics… And what about that new teacher who helped you, Celi?”
“Oh! His name is Abed. Do you want to know what he said to me when you two left me alone and suffering?
“Don’t put me in this! I had to go after Lydia, otherwise she would get into trouble with that Abigail. And let’s face it, we know who would lose.”
“Shhhh…” She elbows Ellie. “What did he say?”
“Many successful actresses have been sabotaged in their lives, I think this is a sign of yours.”
“How old is he again?” Ellie asked, giggling nervously.
“Oh, come on. He was just being polite and helping a student. He’s probably around twenty-eight.”
“It was really cute the way he stayed with you until you calmed down.”
“I agree with Ells. Do you know what class he will teach?”
“He's going to teach cinema, and he seems very experienced in the subject. I'll admit that I'm really looking forward to starting his classes.”
Suddenly, Celine jumps off the sofa.
“Since the play was postponed and not canceled, there’s no harm in studying again!”
Lydia and Ellie look at eachother, while Celine searches with the remote control.
“Are you sure…?”
“It’s your choice, Celi. But we don’t know if it's a good idea for you to watch the movie again.”
“I’m fine, girls! You two know this masterpiece is one of my favorites.”
She sits back down on the sofa, snuggling between her best friends.
The first moments passed peacefully. Until a certain scene arrives, the one where the play was interrupted.
Satine and Christian sang above the elephant. The performance was mesmerizing. Satine carried grace and hope in her voice.
Just like Celine did with Jesse. The chemistry was undeniable, the audience could tell. Even when her fabric started to slip, they thought it was part of the play.
It was only when Celine changed her expression to one of panic that everyone there understood.
Jesse stepped in front of her and removed his blazer to cover Celine. A few seconds later Mrs. Jessica appeared on stage.
“Abigail Anderson! You can stop right there!”
Mrs. Jessica looks at the students.
“Come on, don't stay here! Go back inside!”
The other students huddled together in a hurried way to get backstage. Jesse took Celine to the dressing room.
“Hey, mountain flower… I know that in these moments we need to be alone. But if you want, I can stay here.”
“No need, Jesse. You can go, the girls will take care of me.”
He stood up and kissed Celine's head before leaving. A few seconds later, a figure approached her.
“I brought you a glass of water.”
The man sits in front of her.
“Who are you?” She wipes the tears from her face.
“Abed, new teacher. I was going to start next week, but Principal Tommy invited me over to watch the show.”
“Poor you.’’ She chuckles, with a sarcastic smile.
“You know… Many successful actresses have been sabotaged in their lives, I think this is a sign of yours.”
Celine finally looks into his eyes, with a surprised and curious expression. They talked for a few minutes when Lydia and Ellie appeared. Lydia practically slides to her knees in front of Celine.
“Calm down, Lyly. I’m doing better now.” She smiles.
Ellie sits one chair away from Celine, and Abed gets up to leave.
“We passed by the theater room coming here, Mel looked very angry.”
“Mel?” She stops. “Fuck. I know what happened.”
Celine starts to remember the time she was getting dressed. She had lost her hanger, and Mel had borrowed hers, which had her name on it.
“Mel, here, I found my hanger. It was under the dressing table, thank you for lending me yours.”
“I have more than one so it’s not a big deal.”

(Rosie's) Elephant in the Room
Fandom: Sherlock (TV)
Words: 4491 (on ao3)
Summary: John Watson loves Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes loves John Watson. John Watson’s daughter loves her giant elephant plushie.
This is the story how the two men finally jump over their shadows and confess their feelings. All because of an elephant plushie.
---
Rosamund Mary Watson owned one thing she was incredibly proud of: her gigantic elephant plushie.
Name: Ellie Phant Astic
Gender: female
Age: 1 year 24 weeks and 5 days
Material: very soft fabric
Strengths: very good at hugging and listening. The best plushie in the whole wide world.
Weaknesses: shy, not talkative (only talks to Rosie Watson).
“Hi, Rosie, sweetie. What are you writing down?”, her dad (John Watson) asked, as he dropped his bag to the floor after he came home from work.
“Key data of Ellie Phant Astic. Look!”, proudly the girl showed off her scrawly handwriting to her dad, who squated down to kiss his daughter’s top of the head and review her professional plush toy data. Seven years old, exceedingly smart and good at social interactions as long as it only includes herself, her way too big elephant plushie and family, Rosie reminded John more of Sherlock than of himself. Writing down key data of a plush toy? Definitely a thing Sherlock did as a kid!
“Wow, that’s truly elephant-astic”, John joked and winked. Rosie giggled.
“I believe you call that a dad-joke, John”, Sherlock said leaning in the door frame, dressing gown over his sweatpants and a white T-shirt and a cup of coffee in his hand.
“Well,” John stood up and his spine made a clicking noise. “I am a dad, so I am allowed to make those.” John smiles. “How was your day with the little one?”
“Oh, it was quite ‘elephant-astic’, wouldn’t you agree, Watson?”, he said, making air-quotes when saying the really not that funny word.
Enthusiastically Rosie nodded her head. “Yessss! Phantie and Lock and me went to the pond in the park and fed the ducks and then we came home and played Cluedo and then I had to go down to Granny, because Lock was angry, because he wasn’t playing according to the rules but that’s okay because Phantie, Granny and I made cookies and they were delicious and I ate soooo much!”
“That sounds like quite a busy day, Rosie. But, I suggest you don’t play Cluedo with Lock anymore, he is extremely bad at it.”, the doctor said with a smirk directed at his flatmate.
Rosie laughed, looked at the tall detective, then at the 3 foot stuffed animal and finally whispered into John’s ear, “Phantie agrees.”
Knowing full well his Watsons were whispering and giggling over him, Sherlock countered, “I am not bad at Cluedo. This game is simply illogical.”
“Yeah, sure it is, Sherlock.”, John said and Rosie fell into a giggling fit. With a pout, Sherlock turned around and walked back into the kitchen.
Still smiling, John turned to Rosie. “I’ll be taking a shower and be right down. Will you be alright with Mr. Pouty-Face over there?”
Giggling, Rosie nodded and pointed at the giant elephant next to her, “Phantie and I can handle him.”
“Probably even better than I can, sweetheart.”, John said, gave Rosie another kiss and left to take a shower.
Upstairs John was overwhelmed by the chaotic mess of a room screaming at him. He used to have a very tidy room, apart from the occasional pants or jumper laying one day too long on the floor. That had changed when Rosie came and Mary had died. John had moved back in with Sherlock and was since then sharing his room with a little girl: Plushies everywhere, pirate costumes over his bed, a magnifying glass with a bunch of sheets with a kid’s colourful handwriting, on and around the desk. The closet door wide open, half of the clothes falling out.
This room was getting definitely too small for a little girl living her wildest dreams. Let alone a little girl and her father. Said girl wasn’t even that little anymore. They had two small singles now, instead of the queen sized bed, because Rosie was kicking like crazy in her sleep. John’s nightmares had gotten better with her close to him, but on bad nights he had to sleep on the couch downstairs, as to not disturb her. Or blankly stare onto the ceiling hoping sleep would make John its slave at some point. Thankfully Rosie slept like a stone most days.
And as much as it pained him and would for sure pain his daughter: John would have to move out soon, if he ever wanted to live like a grown man again. If he ever wanted Rosie to become not dependent on her father. They both needed their own space. For their own sakes.
John sighed, grabbed some fresh clothes and left the messy room to take a shower. Tomorrow. He would tell Sherlock they’d move out tomorrow.

Okie I just had a thought about bub and sir. It isn't related to the parts you've written or the next so I hope it's ok if I mention it if not totally disregard this ask I'm sorry if it bothers you.
I was just daydreaming today and was thinking about bub giving sir a little tour of where she lives, and she's so proud because sje made it her own and pretty and cute. And maybe she'd even introduce him to each stuffie they come across throughout the house and stuff.
Cafe BigNSmall - Bucky Barnes (Headcannon (Chapter One/Two)
Bub’s Stuffie Show And Tell
Bucky x Little!Fem!Reader

Warnings - NONE! Literally just fluff, like so much it might hurt!
Please know i’m totally up for any Bub and Mr suggestions! I’m really loving writing for them right now so if anyone has any ideas let me know!!
Note - I have a whole idea about when Bucky sees Bub’s apartment for the first time so I changed up the idea a bit! But we all know Bucky is head over heels for Bub and would sit through hours of her talking about random things so this is just him being an idiot in love … as he should be
Note Two - I’m thinking this fits between the first and second part! Thats what I feel would work because I don’t think it would fit in the future with what I have planned.
Note Three - This is a part of a series I have on my masterlist! You don’t need to read the parts to necessarily understand this blurb!
SFW - My account is SFW, please keep all interactions with this post and my blog SFW

“What’s in your backpack bub?” Bucky asked, Bub staring at him wide eyed from her booth seat.
“‘m jus some things.” She mumbled shyly, slowly sinking back into her seat.
“What things?” Bucky asked calmly, a soft smile on his face.
“You hab to pinky promise to not make fun of me, okay Mr?”
“I would never make fun of you bub!” Bucky reassured her.
Quickly bub pulled her bag onto the table from its resting spot beside her. She zipped open the front pocket and pulled out a small zip up bag, one she had clearly sewn herself, the fabric printed with small frogs and plants. “Um i keep little tings in here.” She said as she opened the bag, pulling out chapstick, keys, and some tic tacs. “Do you want one?” she asked, holding out the tic tac container towards him.
“I’m okay, but thank you bub, thats very kind of you.” Bucky was taking notes in his head what flavour the tic tacs and chapstick were, he would keep those notes for a later date in case she needed something and went to him for help.
“m’kay” Bub answered, quickly opening the big pouch and snuggling the bag a little closer to her body. “Um, well dis is my frog.” Y/n mumbled, her voice barley above a whisper as she placed the frog onto the table. Her eyes avoiding Bucky’s at all costs, expecting him to laugh at her.
Instead Bucky picked the frog up and looked at him. “He’s very cute, whats his name?”
Y/n’s eyes shot up in shock, a shy smile creeping on to her face. “‘m his name is ‘green bean’”
Bucky chuckled, “Thats adorable” He breathed. “Where did you get his cute little outfit?” He asked, surprised that the sweater and overalls fit him perfectly.
“I made dem.” Bub exclaimed, her grip was still tight on the backpack but she finally feeling a little more comfortable about the situation. “I knitted da sweater, and da overalls I made him so he could hab some like mine!”
Bucky’s smile grew ten times bigger, he was proud of and shocked at Y/n’s crafting abilities, loving that she took time to do things that allowed positive distraction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y/n reached back into her bag and pulled out a grey lump, quickly turning it towards Bucky to show off the elephant. “Dis is ellie!” Y/n beamed, her smile so wide and eyes full of joy. “She is da best, very soft, you should feel!” She babbled, pushing the elephant towards Bucky.
Before he could comment how how soft the elephant really was she pulled out a green dinosaur, Bucky slowly realized just how big her bag was, she had already pulled out her colouring book and crayons when she first got here. “My grandpa got me dis dino, his name is dan, after my grandpa. Dan da dino” She said proudly.
“You’ve got lots of stuffies bub.” Bucky laughed. The frog sat against his chest and the table, the elephant held in his arm and the dinosaur now sat in front of him.
“‘m almost finished!” Bub persisted, her hands quickly dipping pack into her bag, this time to grab a sweet purple bunny. “Dis is purple grape!”
Bucky chuckled. “Purple grape?” He questioned.
“Yah, I wan to get all da bunnies, dey come in different colours and I wan to name dem after fruits!” Y/n reasoned, her arms wrapping around the bunny’s body.
“What other colours do you have?” Bucky asked, curious.
“Jus dis one, I really like da blue one, I would call him blueberry!” Y/n giggled. “Dey are all so cute!”
“They are bub, so cute.” Bucky said, by “They” he meant “You”, he wanted to tell bub she was adorable, but he didn’t want to push anything. Now all he had to do was try and figure out where she gets her stuffed animals. As Bub continued to ramble on about her stuffies she had at home he moved the ones in his arms around to find the tags, hopeful that he could get Bub her blueberry.

i'm sure oikawa has talked to your stuffed toys at least once in your relationship
"are these all your stuffed toys?"
"yes, they are," you say, sitting on the edge of the covered mattress, allowing yourself to sink into the quilt. "i've had them since i was young. like, really really young."
"like all-i-do-is-slobber-young? that kind of young?"
"i guess so?"
"well, that's not too young, is that? sounds like you yesterday-"
"shut up, tooru!"
"okay," he concedes, still laughing to himself. he peers at the stuffed toys dutifully aligned at the headboard of your bed. he spots animals of cotton and sees dolls dressed in small wool clothes; and when you're talking to him, and he's half-listening (whoops) he can spy a few pieces of soft fabric cover the rounded lumps and edges and corners of other toys.
"it's so weird being in your childhood bedroom," he says once you finish your sentence. "who knew that you'd have the sense of taste like that in decoration? no wonder your taste in music pales compared to mine."
you dig your elbow into his upper arm and he moans dramatically.
"hey, y/n, my arm isn't yours to dig into!"
"you better apologize," you respond, feigning annoyance. "what you said can be punishable by law."
"can't plead against the truth in court," he mutters in his breath. "well, should i apologize to you? or to your stuffed friends here?"
"all of them. you just insulted their monarch."
he picks up a stuffed elephant, blue and gray at the seams.
"what's their name? and do they know me?"
"that's such a weird question. i think their name is Ellie."
"Well, Ellie, I sure am sorry for offending your monarch. I'm sorry for saying something that's at least 70% truthful."
"You're so bad at apologizing."
"They don't even have my merch, though! How do I know they'd be entranced when I apologize to them? I'm not just anyone!"
"sounds like you buy your own merch," you reply.
"maybe i do," he sighs, picking up the next one. you watch as the wool sheep dips and dunks and sinks under his fingers. "what's their name?"
"it doesn't have a name."
"right. i think we've decided that whenever you and i have children, I'm in charge of name-calling. wouldn't want you calling our child anything other than Tooruisawesome because you can't decide on anything."
"go right ahead, Mr. Username Generator," you chuckle. "make it worthwhile, though."
he stares at the animal intently, pressing it between both of his palms, and he seems more serious and solemn as he fingers your stuffed animal's coat, thinking to himself.
"What are you doing?"
"I don't know how to say this. You've slept with them, right?"
"Yeah, they keep me really nice and warm when I was younger. Why?"
"Well, how am I supposed to tell them that keeping you safe and warm is my job now? Should I just announce it to them? Or should I spoon you to sleep right here for them to see?"

Holding Out for a Hero
I’m so proud of myself, I finished a 12 Days of Killervibe prompt at the last minute!
Holding Out for a Hero
Caitlin pinched the bridge of her nose, breathing out against the burn in her eyes. No matter how she juggled the numbers, they always came out red in the end.
"Dammit, Daddy," she muttered.
The bell over the door jingled, and she jerked her head up, pasting a bright retail smile on her face. "Welcome to Jack Frost Toys!" she called out, quickly minimizing the accounting software. "Are you looking for anything specific?"
Usually they weren't. Usually, they came in, wandered around a little bit, and left. If she was lucky, they bought something before they left.
But the man standing just inside the door, snow dusting his hat and shoulders, said, "Yeah, please, I'm begging you. You're my only hope."
She cocked her head and guessed, "A . . . Star Wars toy?" There wasn't any particularly hot Star Wars toy this year that she was aware of, and she followed every toy blog and website she could find.
He laughed, tugging his gloves off and shoving them in his pocket. "No, just a desperate nerd looking for a Puffy Penguin. My niece is three and she watches the show on repeat. I know Leo Lion is like the hot toy this year, but Maya knows what she wants. For her it's Puffy or nothin', and I couldn't tell if you had any from your website so I came down here just in case and please?" He widened his eyes at her. "Please."
Her heart melted. One of the best things about this store was seeing children find their new best friend. Second on that list was adults who cared enough about the children in their life that they moved heaven and earth to find, not just the latest hottest toy, but the toy that was just right.
She slid off her stool. "I've got some ZooFriends toys right over here. We're sold out of Leo, of course -" Everywhere was sold out of Leo. "But I've got Puffy in a variety of styles."
"Oh my god," he breathed, snatching a Puffy Penguin stuffie off the shelf and holding it as if it were the Holy Grail. "You've got them all. Elly and Slowpoke and Skyhigh - " He stared at the elephant, sloth, and giraffe toys lined up next to the penguins.
She smiled brightly. "Now this one says phrases from the show, but this one is a lot huggier if you ask me -"
"I'll take them both," he said, grabbing the talking Puffy. "Holy shit. Nowhere has ZooFriends anymore. How do you?"
She bit her lip. "Lucky, I guess." She stepped away and grabbed one of the plastic hand baskets printed with the store logo. "Would you like a basket?"
He took it. "Really? Because it's three in the afternoon on the first Saturday of December. A toy store should be wall-to-wall. Where is everybody?"
She turned away. "Amazon," she said. "Walmart. Websites, chain stores -" She shrugged and tried to laugh. "The plight of the modern small business owner. Is there anything else I can help you find?"
"I'll keep looking around," he said, studying the shelf. "So you're the owner?"
She nodded. "This store has been in my family for five generations."
He almost dropped the basket. "Five - Did they even have toys that long ago?"
"Oh, toys have been around as long as humans have had childhood! Did you know they've found marbles in Egyptian tombs? And dolls in archaeological digs. Toys are how children learn about the world, and how they start to decide their identities and practice interactions with others! They . . ." She trailed off, blushing. "Sorry, my major was psychology and I did my senior thesis on the role of play in early childhood development."
He held up a hand. "Hey, I'm the last person to shame anybody for nerding out. That's pretty awesome. You're in the right business."
"For right now, anyway," she murmured.
"What?"
She smiled brightly. "I don't suppose you have any more nieces or nephews that need Christmas presents?"
He studied her for a moment. "Do you have any action figures?"
"Collectible or to play with?"
"Collectible?" he said hopefully.
She led him down the aisle and to the back wall. His eyes went wide. "Oh my god, you've got Max Mercury, black series." He grabbed it off the wall. "And Brainiac? This is a great section!"
She smiled. "My dad invested in these because he was hoping to bring in the collectors."
"Well, he made good choices." He picked the Braniac from its spot and turned it over in his hands, studying it closely.
She left him to it and went back to the counter. She didn't feel like agonizing over the accounts when he was still here, so she cleaned the counter, dusted the book corner, and rearranged the ZooFriends shelf to fill in the empty spots he'd left when he took the two Puffy toys.
After half an hour, he came up to the counter with an overflowing basket, most of it action figures. With her heart singing the song of small business owners, she scanned them briskly.  His purchases came out to well over two hundred dollars. It was a drop in the bucket of her costs, of course, but it was a bigger drop than most.
He handed her his credit card without a wince. When she ran it, his name popped up on her screen. She handed it back with the receipt. "Here you go, Mr. Ramon."
"Cisco," he said. "Please. Mr. Ramon is my pop."
"Cisco," she said. "I can wrap these if you want."
"Just the Puffys," he said. "The action figures are for me."
She grinned at him and selected a print of happy reindeer to wrap the stuffed animals. "Naturally."
He laughed self-consciously. "I'm not sure whether to be insulted or not. I promise I'm a grown-up man."
"Of course you are," she said, hands busily folding and taping. A really nicely grown-up man, too. She battled back her blush and hoped he hadn't noticed. "But I'll never look down on any adult who still likes toys."
"Well, sure, that's a good hundred and fifty dollars of my total."
"There's that," she acknowledged, setting aside the first perfectly wrapped box and picking up the second.  "But toys are important to children's imaginations. And children grow into adults, who still need their imaginations." She nodded at the Max Mercury he held. "I don't think any of us ever really outgrow the desire to be someone's hero."
"Well," he said, "you're my hero today."
She met his eyes and felt the blush rise again. "Thank you."
He grinned and accepted the bag with the two wrapped presents inside. "And come Christmas morning, I'll be Maya's hero."
She smiled. "She's lucky to have an uncle doing his best to find her the perfect present. I'm glad you came by today."
"Yeah, well, it was coming out here or spending a hundred and seventy-five dollars on eBay and hoping like hell it made it here in time." He fiddled with his wallet. "I really don't mean to be that guy, but your website is . . ."
Her face went hot and she made a business of putting away the scissors and the tape and rolling up the rest of the wrapping paper. "Archaic?"
"I was going to say behind the times," he said tactfully. "If you had web ordering, you'd be sold out of ZooFriends and a whole bunch of other stuff."
"I know," she said. "But I really haven't had the time to get a good system set up since I took over the store. I need inventory software that integrates with ecommerce and for that I need technical skills, money, and time, and I don't have any of those."
He leaned on the counter. "You don't have to tell me, but how did it get this bad? You clearly love this place and I really don't feel like you would have let it fall behind like this if you had a choice."
She chewed her lip. "My dad died in September."
Sympathy spread over his features. Not the plastic, practiced sympathy she'd seen so often, but real compassion. "I'm sorry. Was he sick?"
"He had MS," she said. "He'd had it since I was ten, and he'd always kept on top of his medication and his therapy and everything. So - " She looked down at the perfectly clean counter and wiped it off again. "So when I was away at school and he told me he was doing fine, I believed him."
"He wasn't doing fine," Cisco guessed.
She shook her head. Tears burned in her eyes again. "It probably started small. Just little things falling through the cracks. Then the cracks got bigger, more things fell through. . . ."
He nodded. "They tend to do that."
"Mhm. Then last spring, he had an assistant manager who embezzled a lot of money - "
"What!"
"They caught him!" Caitlin assured him. "But most of the money was gone, and the stress of that just sent my dad's health into a tailspin. I'd just graduated so I moved back home to take care of him."
"And I'm gonna guess you were so wrapped up in that, you didn't even realize what was going on with the store until you took over."
She sighed. "Got it in one." She mustered up a smile. "I didn’t mean to dump that on you. It's bad now, but things will come around. They always do. The holidays are the best time of year to be a toy seller."
"Yeah," he said. "They sure are." He smiled back and gathered his purchases. "I'll tell people about this place."
"Great," she said. "Here's my card, by the way."
"Caitlin Snow," he read off the little rectangle of cardstock.
"That's me. Let me know if you have any particular collectibles you'd like me to obtain."
"Hmm?" He was looking at his phone. "Uh, yeah, if I think of any, I'll give you a shout. Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas," she echoed, watching him leave. The jingle of the bell over the door echoed in the toy store's emptiness.
**
Walking back around the building to his car, Cisco snapped a pic of the business card Caitlin Snow had given him. Then he dialed a number on his phone and wedged it between his shoulder and his ear as he pulled on his gloves. "Hey, Iris? Got a moment?"
"Hi, Cisco. Half a moment. My editor's breathing down my neck again about finding some heartwarming story to fill up Sunday space."
"Yeah, I remember you mentioning that. What would you say to a struggling fifth-generation local toy store owner who just took over the business after her dad's death, carries everything from ZooFriends stuffies to high-end collectibles, and knows toys backwards and forwards?"
Iris paused and he could practically hear the gears clicking. "Tell me more."
**
A week before Christmas, Cisco finally found a good excuse to drop by Jack Frost Toys again. With the name of a rare collectible action figure in his pocket, he turned into the parking lot and found it jam packed. He finally managed to wedge his little car into a space half on the gravel and climb out.
This was a good sign, right?
When he walked in the front door, the girl behind the counter wasn't Caitlin. "Welcome to Jack Frost Toys!" she called out before returning her attention to the grandma-looking lady at her counter. "We absolutely do gift certificates. How much would you like that for?"
The place was transformed. There was no other word for it.
When he'd come in the last time, it had been neat and bright and colorful, but empty and somehow sad. Now there were people in every aisle, voices ringing off the rafters. He cut down the doll aisle and almost stepped on a kid sprawled out on his belly, leafing through a colorful picture book. A little girl was staring at the Barbies as if she were deciding the fate of nations. A couple of moms were talking to each other over the Lego sets.
"It's just such a cute little place! It was getting so run-down there for awhile, but this new owner’s really spruced it up."
"I used to come here when I was Mandy's age and it always seemed like the most magical place to me. I'd forgotten all about it, honestly, but we're coming back."
Cisco smiled to himself and edged around them to the collectibles wall.
The door to the stock room opened and Caitlin came out, arms loaded down with what seemed to be flat-folded gift boxes. She stopped short when she saw Cisco. "Hi!"
"Hey," he said, smiling at her. She was wearing reindeer antlers and her hair was up in a bouncy ponytail. "You're busy."
"We are! I'm sorry, I've got to -"
"Yeah, go ahead."
She went to the front counter and stashed the gift boxes underneath. "Allegra," she said to the girl who'd greeted Cisco as he came in. "I just got off the phone with our supplier and they'll have more wrap here tomorrow. Can we hold out?"
"It'll be tight, but we should be okay."
"Great. I'll be back to cover your break in a few minutes, okay?"
"Take your time, I'm good."
Caitlin edged back around the counter and paused to check in with the moms. She considered their questions, looked around, and plucked a few sturdy wooden toys from a lower shelf. "I really like this designer for the textures they incorporate," she explained. "Babies enjoy being able to experience different kinds of material as they explore the toy, and it stimulates their brain development. Have a look at these. I'll be right here if you have any questions."
"Thanks so much."
She beamed and moved on.
Cisco watched her consult with the little Barbie lover and pick out a second book for the reader, as well as four or five other small interactions. It was like watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel or Einstein doing calculations on a chalkboard. She was in her element.
She came around the end of the aisle and spotted him again. Her face lit up. "I'm so glad you came by again." She threw her arms around him.
"Uh," he said. "Hi again to you too." He gave her a quick hug back.
She pulled away, blushing. "Sorry. I - I just wanted to thank you. I know the article in the paper was your doing."
"Oh," he said. "No, that was nothing. I just called up a friend. She's the one who did the interview and that great photo - "
Iris had been savvy enough to pose Caitlin by her display of the coveted ZooFriends toys. Cisco had noticed how bare the shelf looked now.
" - and you were the one who made this shop so amazing that once people knew it was still here, they came."
"But none of it would have happened if you hadn't put it in motion. You said I was your hero that day for having the Puffys, but you’re my hero now.
“Pshaw,” he said. “Like you said, nobody grows out of that.”
“But not everybody does something. So. Thank you."
"Well, you're welcome." He looked around. "So you're doing pretty good, it looks like."
She nodded, beaming. "People started coming in after that article, and PalmerTech asked me to purchase toys in bulk for the families at their company holiday party. All my part-time workers are doing as many hours as they can, and I'll be able to pay the rent for January and February, and if it keeps going like this, I can hire somebody to revamp the inventory system for ecommerce."
She ran out of breath and panted for a moment, her eyes bright.
Cisco had to smile back at her. "That's amazing."
She nodded. "I mean, we're still competing with Walmart and Amazon, and we still took a real hit from what Jay did. So we're not out of the woods, but this - " She looked around, eyes still bright. "This is going to give us some breathing room.
"I'm really glad."
She turned her smile back on him and stole his breath. "Sorry, I'm just chattering away, and - did you come by looking for something else? Another collectible?"
"Ah - well, I was planning to ask about the limited edition Star Wars figures they're talking about for next year."
"I don't think I'm going to be able to order any of those until March, but I can definitely get your contact information."
"Oh. Okay, sure. But actually it was an excuse."
Her brows crinkled. "An excuse?"
"I really wanted to come by and see if you wanted to go get coffee or something. Sometime." He looked around. "I mean, maybe not right now because it's still December and you're slammed, which is great, but - "
"I'd like that."
His stomach filled up with warmth, like drinking an entire mug of hot chocolate. "You would?"
"Very much."
They smiled shyly at each other until Allegra called out, "Caitlin? A little help?" She had a line that stretched halfway down the doll aisle.
"Oh!" Caitlin said. "Uh, I should - "
"Yeah! Go. I'll hang around until you're free, and then I'll get your phone number."
"Okay." She gave him one last smile before rushing up to the counter and opening up a register. "I can help who's next over here! Oh, sweetheart, that's a great choice. Your best friend is going to love it."
Cisco watched her for a moment, smiling to himself, and then turned to browse the collectibles. She'd been right, he mused. The holidays really were the best time of year to be a toy seller.

Percy Jackson pulled into the designated pick up zone, his music blasting so hard his seats vibrated. His fingers tapped along to the beat against the steering wheel, head bobbing aimlessly. The time on the dashboard blinked 14:59 and as the song ended the clock struck the hour.
Little kids, dressed in all manor of outfits came pouring out of the school, throwing basketballs and strapping on bike helmets. He watched as a little boy in a lobster costume attempted to mount his bicycle, falling three times before he got frustrated enough to yank the costume down. Percy, and probably every parent in the vicinity, was grateful the little guy had a vest and shorts on underneath.
Another little boy looked on the verge of tears as he handed a broken pair of wings to his mom. She gave him a kiss and a chocolate and the kid beamed so hard the sun got a little jealous. He immediately turned to the little girl next to him and offered her some of his sugary contraband.
Damn Percy loved Halloween.
Speaking of which, where on earth was Estelle? She had been buzzing about the Halloween sleepover all week and now she was going to be late.
He checked the clock to find five minutes had gone by with no sign of his little sister. The front area was beginning to clear as little kids hopped on the school bus or into a parent's car. He gave it one more, impatient minute before getting out and stalking towards the schools entrance. His eyes wide and frantically searching through all the little bobbles and capes and various types of bugs. What was it with little kids and insects? Still there was no sign of a bright green tail or red hair clips.
Percy was starting to panic. He pushed the double doors of the school open, "Estelle? Estelle? Elle? Ellie? Elephant?"
His shouts echoed in the empty hallways but there was no response.
"Princess Ariel? Come on Elle this isn't funny." His voice shook with nerves as he peered into empty classrooms and around abandoned corners.
"Elle if you come out now I'll get you icecream on the way home." Bribing always worked.
"Come one Estelle, please," He could hear the panic in his voice now.
"Can I help you?" A voice from behind him asked.
He whipped around, stumbling as he caught sight of the stranger.
She was, wow. She looked like a princess from one of Estelle fairytales. Golden curls, and bright grey eyes. And a soft, expectant smile.
Expectant.... expactant. Shit. She was waiting for him.
He cleared his throat, "Uh yes hi I'm looking for my little sister. She didn't come out after school and I'm panicking just a little."
"Oh alright," She motioned for him to follow her before disappearing behind a door, "Can you tell me her name and who her teacher is?"
"Sure yea, her name is Estelle Blofis and her teacher is Miss Dare."
"Oh yes they had swim class for the last hour of the day. Come on I'll take you to the pool. Maybe she's still there."
"Thank you so much," He gave her a grateful look, "I'm Percy by the way, Percy Jackson."
"Annabeth Chase," Her tone was open but her answer was blunt.
Percy was confused and a little worried, and wow she was pretty.
"So you been working here long?"
She gave him a weird look and he realized it was probably a stupid question but before he could back track she was shrugging her shoulders.
"About two years."
"Must really love children huh?" He chuckled, "I think I'd go crazy if I had to look after a bunch of six year olds all day."
She looked at him then, grey eyes piercing into his.
"It started out as a backup plan while I waited to get into postgrad and kind of just became a thing."
"Well I'm sure you're great at it."
She laughed softly, pushing open the doors to the pool, "I'm great at everything Mr Jackson."
"Percy!" A small weight crashed into his legs.
"Hello Elle, where have you been?" He crouched down to look his little sister in the eye, "I've been worried sick about you."
"I'm sorry Pers," She gave him that puppydog stare, "We were having so much fun in the pool Miss Dare said we could stay in for a little extra. I didn't think you'd mind since you like to listen to your loud music." Her little button nose scrunched in distaste before she bounded away to change and grab her things.
Percy heard a soft snickering from behind him and stood up to see Annabeth covering her mouth, grey eyes sparkling with amusement.
"Someone's not a fan of your taste."
He scowled at her, "She doesn't count. Her favourite song is" Kiss the Girl" from Ariel."
"That's a great song," The blonde arched a perfect brow.
"Maybe when you're a kindergarten teacher," He teased, "I listen to real music like Led Zeppelin and Bon Jovi."
"Who said that's real music, Seaweed Brain?" She said pointing to his t-shirt that read Marine Biologists: seaweeds with brains.
"Haha," Percy rolled his eyes, "Well what do you consider good music?"
She opened her mouth to respond but Estelle beat her to it.
"Okay Percy I'm ready. Are we gonna get icecream on our way home?"
"What are you gonna give me in return?" They started waking back into the school.
"We can watch any movie you want tomorrow." She declared.
"Any movie?" He narrowed his eyes at her.
"Any movie. Oh except toy story. I don't like watching Andy give all his toys away. And that mean pink bear scares me."
"So we can watch Frozen?" He picked her up to look straight at her.
"Yes!" She giggled, "But you can't sing along to every word. I like Elsa and Anna's voice."
He pouted at her and glared at Annabeth who had been silent until this moment, when she had hurriedly tried to cover up her laugh with a cough.
"Why don't you run to the car, little one," He put Estelle down, "If you can get there in under thirty seconds I'll let you have two scoops of ice-cream."
The little girl didn't so much as blink before she was racing down the hall.
"So Frozen huh?" Annabeth smirked, "Guess that's also considered good music?"
"I'll have you know Elsa and Anna are queens and icons of this generation."
"Personally I think Nani and Lilo are better role models but whatever you say," She grinned at him.
"How about we settle this debate over coffee? Friday next week?"
"I hope you know I was captain of the debate team in college so you're definitely going down."
"All I'm hearing is that you accepted to go on a date with me," It was his turn to smirk.
She laughed as he wiggled his eyebrows. He knew he looked ridiculous but her laugh was buttery and warm and he'd do most anything to keep hearing it.
"It's a date Percy Jackson."
His smile was bright and unrestrained as they waved goodbye.
"See you then Annabeth Chase."

Lions, Tigers, Bears, Oh My!
First things first, I don’t own anything related to Disney or Newsies. Second of all, this is a continuation of my “The Many Adventures of Sammi & Race” series. You may want to read the others in the series but it’s not necessary!
July 19, 1904
Race had just punched in for his morning shift. His eyes scanned the lobby; there were the usuals in their normal spots. Mr. Richards was sipping on a cup of coffee while reading The World. Mr and Mrs. Marcus were on their way to the restaurant to have their breakfast.  He smiled at the couple, saying “good morning” before returning to the stack of paperwork in front of him.
Shuffling the paper into stacks, he was distracted by the loud disturbance near the front door. Jack was just walking through, catching himself in a yawn.
“Race!” Grinning, Race loved the enthusiasm Jack always greeted him with. It had been a few days since Race had seen his brother. Jack came strolling through the lobby, stopping in front of him. “What brings you in here, Jackie?”
“I needs a favor.” He panted, as if he had run to the hotel. He leaned against the desk trying to catch his breath.
Race nodded, almost willing to do anything to see the worried look disappear off Jack’s face. “Anything.”
“Can yous take Sam for us this afternoon?” Jack panted,
Race grinned. “Absolutely. Sure Is can. What’s wrong?”
“Kat’s sick and Is having issues keeping up both with hers and Samantha. I needs a few hours to make sure Kat’s okays.”
Race’s teeth dug into his lip, worried with concern for his older sister. “Kat okays? And ya, I can come pick up Sammi. We’ll have an uncle/Sammi outing.”
“She’s got a spring cold and is miserable. Thanks Race.  I knews I could count on you.” Jack held out his hand for Race to shake. “Whens you off work?”
Shaking his hand, Race grinned. “I’m off at 1. Where should Is pick up Sammi?”
“I’ll swing by the house at lunch and picks hers up. Come to The World and you can start your outing. Just have her home by dinner.”
Which led the almost 2 and half year old and her favorite uncle on a wild goose chase throughout the city, leading them right to the New York Zoological Park. Sammi had been talking nonstop since Race had picked her up from The World’s offices.
“Unka Ace . . . sees today?”
Race grinned, watching her hold his hand and skip along side of him. “Animals, Sammi. Lots and lots of animals. Yous excited?”
“YES!” she screamed, causing others on the sidewalk to chuckle at her excitement. Race chuckled, picking her up as they neared the Zoological Society. “Come here you little monkey.”
“Not monkey.” She grumbled, watching him pay the entry fee, before perking up at the animals that greeted them.
“Down, pease!” She gave her uncle a look, feeling herself slip down until her shoes touched the ground.
Laughing, Race grabbed her hand before they headed towards the buffalos. He watched her eyes widen at the size of the animals. “Theys big, Unka Ace.”
“They’s buffalos, Sammi and they can weigh up to 2,000 pounds.” Race explained.
Sammi’s eyes widened at her uncle. “Reallys?”
He nodded, taking her hand before they walked towards another pen. “What's that Sammi?”
“ROAR!” She yelled before dissolving into giggles. “‘Ions, Unka Ace! ROAR!”
“How many lions are there, Sammi?” Race asked, knowing Jack and Kat were working on counting with the little girl.
“Ones . . . twos . . . fives . . . threes . . . SIX!” She exclaimed, causing a laugh to escape his mouth, before he picked her up and tickled her sides. “Six whole lions? No way!”
“Des Unka Ace! Six whos lions.” Her eyes went wide as sweet laughter erupted from her open mouth as she wiggled trying to get away from his dancing fingers.
Race gave her a look. “Is think we need to count them again, miss.” Picking her up, he pointed as he counted, “One, two, three, four!”
“Unka Ace, deres one! Five!” One of the lions had been hiding in the shade. He followed his nieces finger and grinned. “Good eye, Sammi! Yous a regular lion spotter, justs likes your mudder!”
They continued through the zoo, pointing out animals along the way. Bears, giraffes, and tigers were all seen on their journey. Soon they came to Sammi’s favorite animal. Race looked at his niece, grinning at her initial reaction. Her eyes went wide, jaw dropped, and she bounced from foot to foot in excitement.
“ELLIE!” Race picked her up and leaned against the fence, watching the elephants with Sammi.
“Elephants are your favorite, huh Sammi?” She nodded her head, putting her finger in her mouth in wonder, watching the gentle giants move slowly within their enclosure.
For the first time since he picked her up, Sammi was quiet. “How many elephants are there, Sammi?”
“One . . . two, unka Ace.” she whispered, not taking her eyes away from the animals in front of her.
They stayed against the fence for over 20 minutes, too enamored to move from their space. People came and went around them but the two stayed and watched the majestic animals. “Yous ready to go, Sammi?”
Taking her finger from her mouth, she looked at Race with a slight nod. Laying her head on his shoulder, the two made their way out to the zoological park.  Before long, Sammi was sound asleep on her uncle’s shoulder.
3:30pm
Easing open the door to the apartment, Race slowly closed the door behind him as he balanced Sammi in his arms. Peeking into the kitchen, he smiled at Spot, who had a tea towel thrown over his shoulder.  “Honey, I’m home.”
“Hi love.” Spot came over. “Do you want me to take her?”
Race shifted her over to his boyfriend and flexed his arm that had since fallen asleep in the journey to the apartment. Watching Spot walk through the apartment to the couch, Race smiled at the tenderness he had with the little girl. Placing her down, Spot joined Race in the kitchen, pulling him into a kiss before hugging him. “Good day?”
“Jack cames to the hotel earlier this morning and practically begs me to take Sammi since Kat’s sick and he needed some sanity.” Race smiled. “I took her the zoo and she fells asleep on the way home.”
Spot nodded. “Good Is glad you two had a good day. That little girl lookscha you like you hungs the moon.”
“She lookscha the same way, Spot. Wes been around since she was born.” Race grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
Spot smiled. “Yous the favorite uncle and none of us holds a candle to dat.”
“Wes can have that debates forever.” Race gave him a look. “Wes both good uncles and fiercely love that little girl along with all her other uncles.”
Spot rolled his eyes, squeezing Race’s hand. “Always da diplomat, huh?”
“Yous wouldn’t have it any other way.” Race pulled Spot into kiss, just as Sammi started to stir on the couch. Looking over at the little girl, who when she lifted her head, her hair was crazy from her sleep. “Hi sleepy head.”
She yawned, pushing her hair from her face. “Is tired, unka Ace.”
“You justs got up sleepy. Hows you sleep?” Race smiled, watching her sitting up, walk over to him and crawl up in his lap, snuggling into his chest. “Goods . . . sees the animals, ellies, and bridge.”
Race looked down at her. “Yous were asleep when we cross the bridge.”
“Nuh huh! I was wake.” She lisped, lifting her head up at him. “Unka Pottie . . . wes saw ellies.”
Spot’s eyes went wide. “Yous did? What elses didcha see?”
She crawled over to his lap and snuggled into his chest. “Ellies, bears, giraffes, ‘ions, tigres, and ‘uffalos.”
Spot raised an eyebrow in Race’s way. “Translation, please?”
“Elephants, bears, giraffes, lions, tigers and buffalos.” Race smiled, running a hand through Sammi’s hair, trying to tame it. “We had a good day, huh Sammi?”
“Uh huh, unka Race.” She yawned again.
Spot caught Race’s eye before running a hand on Sam’s back. “Shall wes start heading back over to Manhattan so we get her backs by dinner?”
“If wes must.” Race sighed, pushing himself up from the couch.
Soon the toll was paid to cross the bridge, Sammi was in Race’s arms talking about the ellies, while Race and Spot held hands. They stopped in the middle of the bridge and just took in the sights of Manhattan. “Do yous miss it Race? Dos you miss the burb?”
Shrugging, Race continued their walk. “Sometimes, I miss it. I think I miss the lodgin’ house mors than anything ‘cause of the boys. Wes had some roughs times in that house but a lots of goods times.”
“Sap.” Spot nudged Race, causing their hands to jerk in response.
“Shuddup. Yous asked the question and Is answered.” Race smiled. “But mys life is pretty goods and I still sees the boys at least onces a month. And I’ve got a pretty special boy who Is can’t imagines my life without.”
Spot looked at the ground as they got off the bridge and headed towards a familiar spot. “Sap; yous a sap, Racetrack Higgins. But yous my sap.”
Shifting Sammi, Race pulled Spot into a kiss with a smile. “I love you Spottie.”
“Loves you too.” Sammi grinned, looking between her two uncles. Race reached out and tickled her stomach, causing a string of giggles to escape her mouth.
“Love you too Race.” He squeezed his hand. “Let’s go.”
“Wheres we goin’?” Sammi looked around at the familiar neighborhood. “Mumma, daddy?”
Race shook his head. “Yous see them soon but I think Uncle Spottie’s gots a different idea.”
“Wheres to unka Pottie?” Spot chuckled at the pronunciation on his name but since she was adorable and little, he let it slide.
He didn’t say a word but stopped outside of a familiar building. “Shall we goes inside? For olds times sake?”
Race looked up and smiled. He hadn’t been in Jacobi’s since he had moved to Brooklyn with Spot. “Sures . . . Sammi, this places is real special.”
Walking in, they sat at a familiar table, sending Race back to the many meetings that were held in the small deli. It was amazing they were never thrown out due to the loudness those meetings would often result in.
“Wells looks what the cats drug in!”
Race’s face broke out in a grin. Sitting at a different table was Albert, Finch, and Elmer all grinning at Race and Spot. “Yous slummin’ in ‘hattan?”
“Funny, bringing Sammi back to Jack and Kat. Decided to goes down a little memor’ lane.” Race put Sammi on the chair beside him. “Sammi, remembers uncle Albert, Finch, and Elmer?”
She shrinked into Race’s side, but waved at the boys. “Hi’s.”
“Are you hanging out with Spot and Race, Sam?” Albert grinned at the little girl - he was the one she saw the most after Race and Spot, as he worked at the newspaper with Kat and Jack.
“Wes saw animals.” Her eyes grew wide and a big smile crossed her mouth. “Unka Ace, down pease?”
Holding her hand as she climbed down, she went over to Albert and crawled up in his lap and proceeded to tell him all about the animals they saw that afternoon.  Spot grinned at Race, grabbing his hand and giving it a squeeze. “Yous good? Wants to sit with ‘em?”
“Just enjoyin’ the moment.” Race grinned. “We losts Sammi to them . . . might’well make sures theys behavin’.”
Moving chairs, Race settled next to Albert and listened to Sammi’s stories while Elmer and Finch got Spot into a discussion on what’s been going on with them. “Yous bringing Sammi back?”
“Kat’s sick; I picked her up from The Worlds and wes went to the zoo.” Race shrugged. “Jack tolds me I needs to have her backs by dinner. This was justs a stop along the way.”
They quickly ordered an apple and banana cream pie to share, continuing to let Sammi do all the talking.  Albert grinned at Race. “Yous look good with her. Hows everything else?”
“Thanks! Good. Works good . . . busy at the hotel but goods.” Race smiled. “Hows you and the girl?”
Albert had been dating a lovely girl name Marie, whom was a factory girl in their burb. Albert had been dating her for almost 2 years. “Shes good . . . thinkin’ of proposin’ to her.”
Race’s eyes went wide as he clapped his friend on the back. “Al that’s fantastic. Thats goods to hear, congratulations.”
“Donts go celebratin’ yet . . . she hasn’ts said yes yet.” Albert held up his hands with a grin.
Race smiled at how far the group had come in the past 5 years since the Strike. “Yous okay?”
“Just reminiscin’ on the lasts five years; hard to believes the strike was 5 years agos.” Race whistled and shook his head. “And looks at us now.”
Albert snorted. “Whos would’ve thoughts you’d be in a hotel and Is at The World, with Jackie of all people? It’s been a crazy five years.”
The pies arrived and Sammi’s eyes widened at the dessert.  “Want some Sammi?”
She grinned at her uncle before taking a big scoop and putting it in her mouth, some whip cream falling to her chin. “Yous can’t tell your father.”
“Uh , Is thinks it's a little too late for that.” Albert said, looking over Race’s shoulder towards the door.
“Racetrack Higgins, what are you feedin’ my daughter?” Jack stood in the doorway, looking at the back table with a grin. “Is shippin’ her to yours house if shes crazy tonight.”
Sammi grinned, seeing her dad, merely scooped another heaping scoop of pie into her mouth. “Hi daddy.”
“Hi Samantha. Did yous have a good time with Uncle Race and Uncle Spot?” He sat in the empty chair, running a hand over the messy hair of his daughter.
“Uh huh. Sees ellies, bears, ‘ions, and tigers.” She grinned, whip cream around her mouth causing Jack to chuckle, picking up a napkin and clearing her up.  “How’s Kat? Feelin’ any better?”
Looking up, Jack took note of Race’s concern. “Fever’s broke; shes just tired. I cames here to get some soup for her. Just happened to be luck thats I runs into yous.”
“She took a nap after the zoo - probably ‘bout as hour, half on mys shoulder and half on the couch.” Race looked at Jack, who was grinning at something Sammi had said. “She was an angel.”
Jack shook his head. “Of course she is. You adore Uncle Race, huh Sam?”
“Uh huh . . .” She grinned, her dimples on full display. “Shall wes go see mumma?”
She nodded. “Mumma sick. Go home?”
“Yes, we can go home.” Jack wiped her hands and face. “How about yous go say goodbyes to your uncles and we’ll go home?”
She hopped down, giving hugs to Spot, Elmer, Finch, and Albert, before stopping in front of Race. “Tank yous unka Ace. Loves you.”
“Yous welcome, Sammi.” He gave her a big hug. “Loves you too. Sees you soon?”
She tightened her arms around him. “Tomorrows?”
“Not tomorrows but maybe this weekend.” He chuckled at her automatic answer of seeing him the next day.
Jack put a hand on his shoulder. “I owe you one. Thanks.”
Clasping hands with his brother, Race grinned. “Nos worries. Love spendin’ time with the pipsqueak. Besides, wes had fun, didn’t wes Sammi?”
“Uh huh. Wes roars with the ‘ions daddy!” She jumped in excitement, Jack picking her up with a grin. “Yous and Uncle Race always has the best adventures. Thanks again Race. Fellas, wes see you later.”
Watching the two of them leave the restaurant, Race grinned, turning back to the crew at the table and immersing himself into the conversations going on. He sure did love that little girl and her parents awful lots.

Joseph Merrick - Part 2
Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), often erroneously called John Merrick, was an English man with severe deformities. He was first exhibited at a freak show as the "Elephant Man", and then went to live at the London Hospital after he met Frederick Treves, subsequently becoming well known in London society.
[Part 1]
~ LIFE AS A CURIOSITY ~
Merrick concluded that his only escape from the workhouse might be through the world of human novelty exhibitions. He knew of a Leicester music hall comedian and proprietor named Sam Torr. In 1884 Merrick wrote to Torr, who came and visited him at the workhouse. Torr decided he could make money exhibiting Merrick; although, to retain Merrick's novelty, he would have to be a travelling exhibit. To this end, he organised a group of managers for Merrick: music hall proprietor J. Ellis, travelling showman George Hitchcock, and fair owner Sam Roper. On 3 August 1884, Merrick departed the workhouse to start his new career.
The showmen named Merrick the Elephant Man, and advertised him as "Half-a-Man and Half-an-Elephant". They showed him around the East Midlands, including in Leicester and Nottingham, before moving him on to London for the winter season. George Hitchcock contacted an acquaintance, showman Tom Norman, who ran penny gaff shops in London's East End exhibiting human curiosities. Without a meeting, Norman agreed to take over Merrick's management and in November, Hitchcock travelled with Merrick to London.
When Tom Norman first saw Merrick, he was dismayed by the extent of his deformities, fearing his appearance might be too horrific to be a successful novelty. Nevertheless, he exhibited Merrick in the back of an empty shop on Whitechapel Road. Merrick had an iron bed with a curtain drawn around to afford him some privacy.
Tumblr media

Norman observed Merrick asleep one morning and learnt that he always slept sitting up, with his legs drawn up and his head resting on his knees. His enlarged head was too heavy to allow him to sleep lying down and, as Merrick put it, he would risk "waking with a broken neck". Norman decorated the shop with posters that had been created by Hitchcock, depicting a monstrous half-man, half-elephant. A pamphlet titled "The Autobiography of Joseph Carey Merrick" was created, outlining Merrick's life to date. This biography, whether written by Merrick or not, provided a generally accurate account of his life. It contained an incorrect date of birth but, throughout his life, Merrick was vague about when he was born.
Norman gathered an audience by standing outside the shop and drawing a crowd through his showman's patter. He would then lead his onlookers into the shop, explaining that the Elephant Man was "not here to frighten you but to enlighten you". Drawing aside the curtain, he allowed the onlookers—often visibly horrified—to observe Merrick up close, while describing the circumstances leading to his present condition, including his mother's alleged accident with an elephant. "Ladies and gentlemen ... I would like to introduce Mr Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man. Before doing so I ask you please to prepare yourselves—Brace yourselves up to witness one who is probably the most remarkable human being ever to draw the breath of life." —Tom Norman.
The Elephant Man exhibit was moderately successful, and made money primarily from the sales of the autobiographical pamphlet. Merrick was able to put his share of the profits aside, hoping to earn enough to one day buy a home of his own. The shop on Whitechapel Road was directly across the road from the London Hospital, an excellent location, as medical students and doctors visited the shop, curious to see Merrick. One visitor was a young house surgeon named Reginald Tuckett. Like his colleagues, Tuckett was intrigued by the Elephant Man's deformities and told his senior colleague Frederick Treves.

Frederick Treves first met Merrick that November at a private viewing, before Norman opened the shop for the day. The viewing lasted no more than 15 minutes after which Treves returned to work. Later that day, he sent Tuckett back to the shop to ask if Merrick might be willing to come to the hospital for an examination. Norman and Merrick agreed. To enable him to travel the short distance without drawing undue attention, Merrick wore a costume consisting of an oversized black cloak and a brown cap with a hessian sack covering his face, and rode in a cab hired by Treves.
At the hospital, Treves examined Merrick, observing that he was "shy, confused, not a little frightened, and evidently much cowed". He measured Merrick's head circumference at the large size of 36 inches (91 cm), his right wrist at 12 inches (30 cm) and one of his fingers at 5 inches (13 cm) in circumference. He noted that his skin was covered in papillomata (warty growths), the largest of which exuded an unpleasant smell. The subcutaneous tissue appeared to be weakened and caused a loosening of the skin, which in some areas hung away from the body. There were bone deformities in the right arm, both legs, and, most conspicuously, in the large skull. Despite the corrective surgery to his mouth in 1882, Merrick's speech remained barely intelligible. His left arm and hand were not large and were not deformed. His penis and scrotum were normal. Apart from his deformities and the lameness in his hip, Treves concluded that Merrick appeared to be in good general health.
Norman later recalled that Merrick went to the hospital for examination "two or three" times and during one of their meetings, Treves gave Merrick his calling card. On one of the visits, Treves had photographs taken, and he provided Merrick with a set of copies which were later added to his autobiographical pamphlet. On 2 December, Treves presented Merrick at a meeting of the Pathological Society of London in Bloomsbury. Eventually, Merrick told Norman that he no longer wanted to be examined at the hospital. According to Norman, he said he was "stripped naked and felt like an animal in a cattle market".
During this time in Victorian Britain, tastes were changing in regard to freak show exhibitions like the Elephant Man. Shows like Norman's were a cause for public concern, both on the grounds of decency and due to the disruption caused by crowds gathering outside them. Not long after Merrick's last examination with Frederick Treves, the police closed down Norman's shop on Whitechapel Road, and Merrick's Leicester managers withdrew him from Norman's care. In 1885, Merrick went on the road with Sam Roper's travelling fair. He befriended two other performers, "Roper's Midgets"—Bertram Dooley and Harry Bramley—who on occasion defended Merrick from public harassment.
~ EUROPE ~
The dampening of public enthusiasm for freak shows and human oddities continued and the police and magistrates became increasingly vigilant in closing down shows. Merrick remained a horrifying spectacle for his viewers and Roper grew nervous about the negative attention the Elephant Man drew from local authorities. Merrick's group of managers decided he should go on tour in continental Europe, with the hope that authorities there would be more lenient. Merrick's management was assumed by an unknown man (possibly named Ferrari) and they left for the continent. The Elephant Man was no more successful there than in Britain, and similar action was taken by authorities to move him out of their jurisdictions. In Brussels, Merrick was deserted by this new manager, who stole Merrick's £50 (2018 equivalent £5,400) savings. Abandoned, Merrick made his way by train to Ostend, where he attempted to board a ferry for Dover but was refused passage. He travelled to Antwerp and was able to board a ship bound for Harwich in Essex. From there, he travelled by train to London and arrived at Liverpool Street station.
Merrick arrived at Liverpool Street Station on 24 June 1886, safely back in his own country, but with nowhere to go. He was not eligible to enter a workhouse in London for more than one night and would be accepted only by Leicester Union, where he was a permanent resident. Leicester was 98 miles (158 km) away. He approached strangers for help, but his speech was unintelligible and his appearance repugnant. He drew a crowd of curious onlookers until a policeman helped him into an empty waiting room, where he huddled in a corner, exhausted. Unable to make himself understood, his only identifying possession was Frederick Treves's card. The police contacted Treves, who went to the station. Recognising Merrick, Treves took him in a hansom cab to the London Hospital. Merrick was admitted for bronchitis, washed, fed and put to bed in a small isolation room in the hospital's attic.

The orphan elephant for @smol-risu
Tumblr media
Once upon a time, there was a little elephant named Ellie.
Elie did not have any parents like the other elephant kids. While everyone else spent time with their families, Ellie was lonely and always by herself. She wanted nothing more than to be like everyone else. One day, Ellie was sitting under a tree in the shade. It was very hot and the other elephants were playing with their families in the water. „Hello little elephant“, said Alex the squirrel and sat down next to her. „How are you doing today?“ „I'm sad. Everyone else is in the water but I am here by myself“. „I have no one to hang out with either“,said Alex the squirrel. „But if you want to I would love to play in the water with you!“ Ellie was so happy. Immediately she let Alex jump on her back and walked with him to the water, where they found a calm place a few meters away from the other elephants. Ellie made a soft water fountain with her trumk, she was very careful because Alex was so little. Alex jumped around on her back and soaked in the water and they were both very happy. „Let's do that again tomorrow“, Alex said when they were done. „I would love to be your friend“.
When dinnertime came, all the other elephants were eating leaves out of a tree with their families. Ellie stayed back and watched them. „Hello little elephant“, Ellie looked around, but did not see anyone. „Where are you?“, she asked. „I am down here on the flower“ Ellie looked and saw a little bee dancing around in the air. „My name is Bea. I have no one to eat dinner with me, would you like to joyn me?“ So Ellie chewed on some leaved while Bea ate the nektar in the flowers. „It is so nice to be together with you“, Bea said. „I can feel that you're someone very special“. „Would you like to eat dinner together again?“, Ellie asked the bee and Bea started swinging around happily. „We can eat dinner together every night if you want!“ Ater dinnertime, all the elephant families were gathering to prepare their children for bed. Ellie felt lonely again, since she had no one taking care of her. She walked a little bit and came across a mother who was grooming her babies. „Good evening little elephant“, the mother said and smiled at Ellie. „Hello Mrs fox“, Ellie answered. „I see that you are all alone. Would you like to sit down with us and protect my family as I tell all of you a bedtime story?“ Ellie was happy. She nodded and laid down next to the little foxes. They were very excited and jumped over her back, while the smallest rolled up in her trunk. Then mama foy told a story about a fox that had 3 legs and won the forest race. Ellie was so content and the story was so wholesome that she fell asleep with the little foxes on the spot.. The next morning, mama fox asked her: „Could you sleep with my family every night? You protected them better than I can on my own and we loved having you there.“
And from that day on, Ellie spend every day having fun with her friends and never felt lonely again.
The end

warnings: u might get diabetes from how sickeningly sweet this is but it be like that sometimes
Tumblr media
Your neighbourhood covered in snow looks just like the way it did when you first came here.
You remember that day as clear as itself. Getting off the car with a rather glum face, you had persistently been complaining about the cold just as any child would. Adjusting to a new place so young can be difficult—most of us know that— yet it’s easier as a child. That day, you had slipped and fallen on the side of the road, too, and had it not been for your saviour, boy-next-door Na Jaemin, you would have definitely been in a worse condition. Or, that’s what he likes to say.
Jaemin had rushed to you with his eyes wide and asked if you were okay. He had extended his tiny hands and pulled you up with whatever force he could muster. And since then, you had been the closest of friends. Well, not right away. You were too busy crying about your elbow paining to notice Jaemin properly, and had ran to your parents instead. Jaemin’s parents, noticing him with you had also rushed to you for assistance. And as it goes, the small talk between your parents had led you to hanging out with Jaemin the entire of the next day, to get familiar with the neighbourhood and the neighbourhood kids.
It was through Jaemin, you made more friends. And it was through him, you found the simple joys in the neighbourhood much better. Maybe Jaemin isn’t exaggerating when he says he was your saviour. Most of your memories are tied to spending the vacations in each other’s house or the treehouse, and spending schooldays finding silly activities to pass time with. And of course, he loved and still loves to climb in through your window, pretending to be Romeo or something silly of the sort. And, well, he keeps getting cheesier by the day but you suppose can tolerate that.
When you were seven, Jaemin had given you a pink and yellow elephant toy (Jaemin said her name was Ellie) that he had worked really hard on for Christmas.  You still need it to sleep peacefully and it’s a must before exams (Jaemin says it has magical powers to reduce stress) or when he used to sleep over. He doesn’t sleep over anymore, though, having outgrown your bed, which now only fits you and Ellie. That doesn’t stop him from scrambling in through your window in the middle of the night just to talk or watch movies or play board games.  His open mouth smile full of joy when you present him with his favourite snacks, hasn’t changed much through the years, and you’re glad you’re friends with him when he gives you warm hugs at 3am, talking with you about anything and everything.
Of course, the Jaemin now is pretty changed, if looked from the outside. He used to be on the shorter side in middle school, but going through a sudden growth spurt made him way taller than you are, much to your exasperation (which mainly stems from you not being able to smack his head as easily as before). He had gained weight, and in the right proportions too. To put it in the words of your mother, Jaemin had grown up to be a handsome young man. You had scrunched your nose at how weird it sounded, but you know that’s the simplest way to put it. And finally, he had also gained the attention of the girls at school, probably deemed the first love of many. Yet, Jaemin was still Jaemin at heart. He still loved bear hugs, squishing cheeks and showering affection, he was still the absolute kindest, and he was still the boy who refers to himself as your hero. And you still wave it off when he says it, not able to contain your laughter.
When you see the first snow of the year in the evening, you know for certain Jaemin will probably sneak in through your window at night, after his basketball practice. You also know he’ll probably talk all about his new classes and how he looks forwards to college and life. His voice always lulls you to sleep, with how absolutely radiant and at peace he sounds—of course, he complains about you falling asleep in the middle, pouting in response, but pinches your cheeks and lets you, anyway. It’s refreshing to look at life through his eyes, and sometimes you find yourself lost in his world when you aren’t busy pretending to sleep.
Jaemin enters your room at 10pm sharp with what seems to be a letter between his teeth.
“(Y/N)!” Jaemin beams as he takes a place beside you on your bed.
You smile back at him, noticing the letter, and teasingly ask, “Whose heart did you break today, Mr Highschool Heartthrob?”
Jaemin laughs nervously and proceeds to stick his tongue out but before you can question him, he says “Did you prepare your list?”
Ah, yes. Your annual list-making for the stuff you want for Christmas. You make the list on the day of the first snow and read it to each other the very same night. The more stuff you cross on that list, the more points you get. In the end, the one who got the most gifts from their own list wins. Jaemin happened to be last year’s winner and you’re hoping to outwit him and win this time.
“Are you gonna write sweaters and socks in your list again, because that’s totally unfair,” you complain, “Because literally every aunt in your family gifts you sweaters and socks.”
“Nope,” Jaemin beams. “I have only one thing in my list this year.”
“What, really?”
“Yup.”
“Please tell me it’s lip balm.”
“Oh crap, I forgot.”
“Oh my god, it’s not coffee, is it?”
“No,” Jaemin squints at you. “My coffee addiction isn’t that bad.”
You’re about to retort when you see Jaemin absentmindedly play with Ellie, the corners of his lips curled, and you feel soft again. Sometimes, you’re aggravated at how easily your mood changes because of him. Other times, you’re too distracted to complain. Jaemin looks at you with a certain shine in his eyes and turns over to lay his head on your lap, while keeping Ellie on his stomach. Jaemin loves it when you play with his hair, and it’s at times like these you wonder about the thinning line between friendship and a relationship, between you and Jaemin. You don’t know if you’re actually in love with Jaemin, or prefer him as your best friend. You’re not sure if you’re in love with him because he’s your best friend. He animatedly tells you about your day as usual, but you’re also more out of focus than usual. You’re lost in your own thoughts of the future, what you feel for Jaemin and how uncertain everything is, slowly feeling the burning anxiety rise in your chest.
Of course, Jaemin can sense when you get upset or are about to get upset, for he looks up at you and asks, “What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing much,” you lie in vain, knowing you’re going to have to tell him anyway.
Jaemin sits up and gives you the look, which means ‘hey, spill the beans now or suffer through my tickle attacks.’ You’re gonna have to come up with an escape plan fast.
When you don’t respond, Jaemin sighs dramatically, saying, “I can’t believe you’re making me do this.”
Before you can escape, Jaemin wraps his legs around your waist and proceeds with the threatened tickle attacks. And you’re laughing along with Jaemin just like the old days, when you used to just lay on top of each other and play games around the neighbourhood, without the fear of unknown feelings messing with your mind.
“Say it!” Jaemin asserts.
“Ha—okay okay! Ahaha—stop! I’ll tell you.”
You take a few moments to breathe and compose yourself. Jaemin looks at you expectantly, while you collect your words.
“Well, uh. Don’t you think it’s weird that we’re almost over with high school and, um, have literally zero dating experience.”
Jaemin has a quizzical expression when you explain further, “I mean, especially you. You have girls and dudes dying at your feet every other day. You can’t not be into any of them.”
Jaemin doesn’t say anything for a moment. Then he bursts out laughing.
You feel the red spread across your face as you let embarrassment get the best of you. Right, of course, it was a stupid thing. Why did you ever even tell him? You just—
“That’s what you’re worried about?”
“Well, uh, that and college and our future and stuff. Ya know, the usual.”
Jaemin laughs some more before pulling you into a bear hug, the warm material of his hoodie tickling your cheek. “You don’t have to be so worried about me,” Jaemin says, gently rubbing circles on your upper back, and for a moment, you feel incredibly selfish for being caught up in your own feelings instead of paying attention to him. To the boy who always loved without asking for love back.
You turn around, his arms wrapped still around you, almost falling asleep against his chest. His little habits of showing affection always comforted you—you aren’t sure how he even picked them up, almost like he was meant to be your cosy place, your one comfort spot.
“Wanna read out your list?” Jaemin asks, his chin resting on your head. You look up at him, remembering the list with an ‘oh’.
You nod slowly before picking up the paper on your desk near the bed.
“I got only two things this time. Uh, number two is lip balm for you because I knew you’d forget,” you begin. “Guess what number one is.”
“Graduating?”
“HEy! What’s that supposed to mean? My grades are better than yours.”
Jaemin grins, “What is it then?”
“Us in the same college.”
Jaemin is quiet for a while before breaking into a wide smile. “Of course we’ll be in the same college,” he says and pinches your cheek.
“What’s yours?” you ask, looking up at him.
Jaemin takes a deep breath and says, “Okay, don’t freak out.”
“It’s not a Komodo dragon, is it?”
“Well it looks like one,” he says before taking out the paper he brought, and displays it to you. It had only one word written on it, ‘You’. Cheesy.
You feel offended at first, with him comparing you to a Komodo dragon. But immediately, what you feel is your heart pump blood quicker and a blush creep up all the way to your ears. Surely, he was kidding around, being the cheeseball he is.
“That’s. Just. so cheesy,” you whine, meeting his bicep with a punch, “Stop messing around.”
“I’m not,” Jaemin’s voice is gentle and quiet. He gets closer till you’re eye level with him, an unsure smile plastered on his face.
You’re the one who meets your lips with his. The kiss is soft, just like him but it doesn’t last long. When you pull away, he detests the loss of contact, moving his face towards yours. When you see him, you find him completely red in the face and ears, embarrassed at his own reaction.
Jaemin smiles again, his nose still pink, before kissing your forehead and wrapping his arms around you, squishing his face against yours with his usual smile. You talk some more, trying to predict how the last few days of high school will go, if Renjun will actually set the school on fire or if Chenle will finally permanently damage Donghyuck’s eardrums, or if Jisung will miss them at all (you said Jisung probably wouldn’t miss Jaemin to which he started pouting). At some point, you’re both too sleepy to talk any more, but you do hear him murmur softly against your forehead. You’re certainly not letting him climb down the window in this state, and gladly he doesn’t seem to be willing to leave either. In the end, you just end up a crumpled mess, limbs bent at odd angles, somehow managing to fall asleep.
It starts snowing just before dawn again.
When your mother finds the two of you pressed against each other on top of your bed, with poor Ellie squished in the middle, she shakes her head. She knew you would eventually come to realize that you both are head over heels in love for each other. It was motherly instinct, after all, to understand the feelings of her own child.
She closes the door, going back out, to let you sleep in. It’s tradition to sleep in on the first day of snow. You and Jaemin get even closer, if possible, finding the warmth in each other incredibly sweet.
