i'm interested in so much, which would be impossible to fully state. there are so many new things out there and i love learning about them all!! this blog is mainly for writing but i'm not strict on that.

i also am pretty sure i'm neurodivergent (no diagnosis or anything yet) and tend to delve into hyper-fixations for weeks at a time. if i haven't posted for a while, it's probably because of one of my other hyper-fixations or school.

i'm going to college for my bachelor's in graphic design, which might make my responses during the school year delayed.

Do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? oooof, really calculating and intellectual types! i'm not very good at it and my style of writing doesn't super lend itself to that because i tend to spell out their every thought, lmao. the only reason i could write constance is because she was simultaneously the smartest and stupidest person in the room at any given time.

What kind of scenes, situations etc do you believe you enjoy writing the most? oh, i'm a comedy relief writer first and foremost. any situation where i can put people into a yes-and context is fun for me. but, i am realizing i do really enjoy dramatic scenes too for character study and exploration.

i'm a big reader and i plan to share some of my recently reads on this blog. please feel free to send me book recs if you think it's something i might like or if you just wanna ramble about something you read that you really liked! my favorite genres are horror, magical realism, fairy tales and fantasy. i love beautiful prose that's almost poetic and ambiguous writing that has you questioning everything until the grand reveal.

my favorite books are: bunny by mona awad, deathless by catherine m. valente, and how to win the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone. the last two books helped me understand the kind of writing style i want to strive for as did poetry !! i don't have a whole lot of fav poems, but worm king's lullaby by richard siken is one that's always spinning in my head.

alongside reading i like manga, webtoons, videogames, and anime. my all time favorite anime is hyouka followed by angel beats and clannad. my favorite webtoon is omniscient reader's viewpoint and i can't recommend it enough. it's soosososo good! ( i started with the webtoon before switching to the novel bc i was too impatient to wait for the updates ) my favorite games are the halo series and oxenfree.

other interests of mine include music, drawing, art, watching youtube videos, journaling, horror movies, and sleeping 😴. i have a few graphic novels / webcomics in my wips so i'm learning how to draw to make them a reality! i also have a video game that's tied to another wip so i'm getting into coding as well !

atwe follows the mother of a teen superhero getting revenge after her kid is killed by an unknown villain. though it's my own special take on superheroes featuring my personal criticisms on teen heroes, it's also a study on family—in particular—distant family relations and saying i love you a little too late.

march marchen is my sort of alice in wonderland / fairy tale retelling that follows an unnamed girl in what might be wonderland trying to figure out who she is and who she isn't. ft parallel worlds, escapism, the fear of childhood, and the fear of adulthood.

shes a 20 something year old german trans woman living in nz. shes 5'10" (somewhere around like 177.80cm) and a lesbian. she uses she/her pronouns but is fine with being called a guy or people using he/him for her as long as she know they believe her when she says shes a woman (like they dont mean it in a transphobic way). she has a deep voice and a german accent i havent really got much of the worldbuilding down yet but i do have most of her personality down. also her story takes place in some vague year between 2000 and now

shes kinda a huge loser like in the sense that she spends most of her time just sorta sitting around at home drinking beer and smoking while listening to industrial and hardcore and metal and shit (shes almost definitely depressed but im yet to explore that side of her lmao). she drinks and drives, shes incredibly wreckless. she kinda doesnt care that much about others but more in a way where shes just kinda always in her own head only thinking about herself and what she wants but when it comes to the people close to her shes incredibly protective like a guard dog. she acts like kinda a silly idiot around her loved ones but as soon as someone even looks at any of them wrong, shes fully ready to kill them. she clings onto her friends and stuff like theyre the last thing she has left. less in a desperate kinda codependent way and more in a "i could not live without you i will protect you with all i have trust me please stick around and keep me in your life i will make my existence worth your while" kind of way

shes a wannabe badass but also just is a badass. like she acts all cold and stoic but laid back, i guess in a way trying to seem all mysterious and cool but mostly just comes off like a bit of a jackass (cause she kinda is a bit of a jackass but she means well. sometimes.) i havent got to this part of the worldbuilding so i dont have an explanation for why she is this way but im planning that theres something she has to fight against or something like that. i have a bit of a vague idea of what i want but no specifics but she has a side to her where like shes actually kinda badass. she wears a wolf mask and carries around this baseball bat which the tip is like covered in nails and shit. im planning she gets covered in blood often because women covered in blood is awesome. im planning a theme with the group of characters she hangs out with where they all wear some kind of animal mask and each have their own weapon which like reflects their personality and whatnot

she works in a fast food restaurant which i feel like explains a lot about her

she mostly wears the mask to hide her identity but also to just hide her face in general. shes not insecure about how she looks but more just worried about what other people think of her. shes on hrt but she wants to keep her body hair cause she likes her body hair which includes her facial hair though she does regularly shave it cause she knows it gets her misgendered. she also wears a spiked collar and sometimes a leash (if shes not wearing a leash shes wearing some kind of bondage harness thing) both to continue the whole wolf dog thing shes got going on and also for sexual reasons of course

she has a romance thing going on with another oc of mine called blair (the name is a placeholder im so bad at picking names). blairs tiger/big cat coded shes more of the happy-go-lucky chaotic type. sophia goes incredibly soft for her like the whole trying to be a stoic badass thing completely drops around her she would sacrifice herself in a heartbeat if it meant blair was kept alive and safe which worries the fuck out of blair cause half the time she does not need to sacrifice herself but she puts herself in danger for blair often times for no reason cause she believes its what she needs to do to keep her safe. like her life is meaningless without blair so she'd rather be the one to die than live without blair. which like yeah theres a flaw in her logic cause like if she dies shes still without blair and now blairs sad but yknow. maybe she'll figure that out someday not sure tho shes a little stupid

I admit to being a loser & joining lots of fic exchanges and other fan creation event Discords lately, and I do NOT know how you can brush up against these spaces and not face the glaring reality that kids are picking up trans identities like emo fashion or sparkledog OCs. There are always places to pick your "pronoun role" and they're ALWAYS 50-60+% they/neopronouns. And as for the huge selection of "he"s? Sorry not to stereotype but I highly doubt a cis guy in his 20s is joining hyper fandom events to write slash fanfiction.

(Oh and also they all love to make characters trans and rape fic is progressive praxis. Of course. I feel like reading/writing porn of trans characters is its own fetish, but since they're armed with 'he/they' pronouns, it can masquerade as representation.)

I completely get what you mean here and I wanted to expand about something related to this widespread gender crisis for teen girls.

While I don't want to oversimplify why there's been such a massive increase in female teens adopting trans identities, I think part of it is that it's essentially a substitute for being a part of subculture. Today's nonbinary xie/xir is yesterday's scene kid, is last week's goth kid.

The way that coming out of trans seems to spread rapidly within friend groups (I personally witnessed a version of the ROTG effect while in high school with former friends), feels like how one person would come out as goth (usually the 'leader' of the group) and then rapidly the rest of the friend group would come out as such so they wouldn't be left out of the group. It goes back to what you were saying about wanting to fit in. This isn't to say that everyone stops being goth after school/uni, but obviously let's be real - most do.

Moreover, the new names trans teenagers adopt often sound like the silly nicknames teens would use with each other in these subcultures like "blood" and "raven". I've lost the post but there was a trans activism insta page with a list of trans teens protesting the ban on puberty blockers in the uk. The list included names like "coven", which again sounds like something a 14 year old would go by in 2007 chat room. The difference is that 14 year olds now believe it's a legitimate name because of the online TRA slop they've been ingesting. It affects interests too, "Gender" was an interest a former friend of mine suddenly had, replacing all her other hobbies like writing and other creative endeavours. And I think this is reinforced by the isolation of the online spaces you've discussed above.

But the difference between becoming trans and becoming goth/scene etc. is that the former involves way more life changes, especially if you've medically transitioned. This of course promotes the sunken cost fallacy, because it's a lot more embarassing to change back to she/her pronouns after forcing your family to call you he/they for four years. A photo with a bad scene hairstyle is something you cringe at in your 20s, and laugh about in your 30s+. It's a lot harder to laugh about the time you thought you were a boy or a special genderless being.

And I have to wonder if this mass gender crisis would be as widespread if teens still had proper irl subcultures, not just online spaces to interact with other strangers who reinforce their delusions rather than naturally growing out of phases. Figuring out your identity and rebelling against social norms as an awkward teenager by adopting a dramatic fashion sense is a perfectly normal thing to go through. A 14 year old girl genuinely believing that she's a boy named Kai who needs to go on puberty blocks and cut off her breasts otherwise she'll kill herself is not.

I haven't told y'all about this yet, but a few weeks ago I went to this LGBT+ (they used whatever the hell the official acronym is) mixer.

This was like the first mixer type event i've been to since i had my kid, so i wasn't really in my element, anyway i'm sitting screwing around on my phone nursing my pinot grigio (because i'm not 22 anymore and i get hungover now) and this younger girl comes up, she must've been around 19-21,

Instead of introducing herself she goes, "what are your pronouns?"

I look up and am like, 'what?' again she asks, 'what are your pronouns?' Then she adds hers, which were her/they, like i don't even know her name nor does she know mine.

So after a few more counts i finally answer, 'i'm bunny (used my real name lol) and i guess she/her? what's your name?'

She tells me her name and then immediately asks my sexuality.

I tell her i'm bi, and she gets this look on her face, now a quick note about me, i'm older, i've known my sexuality since like 2008, when i first came out i got the 'gah you're such a whore just pick one' so that's what i was expecting.

instead this kid goes, 'oh that's transphobic.' at this point i started to regret coming to this event, deciding that i'm too old and too out of touch with everything related to sexuality/gender. I start draining my drink so i have an excuse to go to the bar,

I ask 'how is that transphobic, i don't care if someone is trans?'

and she tells me i need to be pansexual and be willing to date any gender.

so i went from being told i was too much of a whore to being told i wasn't enough of a whore lmao.

then she asked me about my romantic tastes, and i was super confused again cause i just told her i was bi and she told me that wasn't right.

i ended up politely leaving saying i wanted to go get another drink,

i sat at the bar for a few minutes trying to decide if i should just go home or not, when some older gay guys came in, we ended up striking a conversation about it, and they were like no this is a younger kid thing, don't worry about it.

i ended up staying and having some fun, got brunch with the older gay men the next day (several of them were accountants so we got on really well lol)

it was just a baffling experience, i'm going to the next mixer, but only talking to the older people lol

i guess the moral of this story is... i'm old and haven't really thought about my sexuality since middle school?

like i have trans friends? I just don't get it... Maybe it's because i'm cis, but it just seems really strange to initiate a conversation irl with what your pronouns are? I get it on the internet, but like at least tell me your name first?

Please friend, tell your tale. What earned you your position as The Guy?

So I went from being home schooled directly to university and joined a historical reenactment group in my second semester. It quickly became roughly ninety percent of my identity. I routinely wore my non-combat kit everywhere. Tunic, trews, and most importantly a giant fuck-off cloak.

I, of course, did not realize I was The Guy until an acquaintance of mine came into the pub I was drinking in and excited bought me a pint because one of his friends had mentioned seeing "The guy in the cloak" in town, and my buddy was able to go "I know that guy! I'm friends with him!"

I also, one semester, regularly showed up to lectures in armour (In my defence. The lecture ended when the training session started. And it's easier to wear maille than carry it)

My #1 post of 2022

So because I have had a hyperfixation on Scandinavian history 700AD to 1300AD for about a decade and a half now, consistent like. And have been coming back to the Temeraire books all regular like for about the same span. I have decided to share some headcanons/AU worldbuilding for the role of Dragons in Norse society.

So. The generally accepted theory is that dragon-handling was introduced to the Proto-Norse by the Romans. Because the setting is similar enough to the real world that we aren't getting rid of that 'radiation of civilization' bullshit. Especially not before the Napoleonic War.

However. My headcanon is that it happened slightly differently, and I have come up with some ways to have evidence that both supports my headcanons but is obscure enough for the “The Romans did it” theory to be the dominant one at least as far as the novels.

Specifically having the Romans theory contradicted by several manuscripts of Snorri's "Heimskringla", and an Icelandic manuscript of uncertain provenance (But probably also fucking Snorri because everything is) entitled "Sigurds Saga Fafnirsbani" which would be an alternative text of the Volsungasaga or Nibelungenlied. The texts would diverge in the sequence immediately following the death of Fafnir.

In the germanic texts, Regin the smith instructs Sigurd to cook Fafnirs heart but not to eat it. Depending on the version Sigurd either burns his fingers on the heart and sticks them in his mouth, gaining the wisdom Regin intended to obtain by eating the heart and coincidentally realising the smith plans on betraying him. Or is warned of the impending treachery by a grey-cloaked old man who happens to be wandering nearby and may or may only have the one eye. (This is how the story goes IRL)

In the Icelandic text (invented for this AU by yours truly), amongst the treasures of Fafnir is a large egg, and Regin instructs Sigurd to wake him if the egg shows signs of hatching  as neither of them them have the skill to destroy the egg before it hatches and only Regin has the lore to slay the hatchling, as he had the lore to instruct Sigurd as to how to slay Fafnir 

Regin then goes to sleep, at which point our nameless old hobo ambles past, stops, and goes "You ken your friend is lying through his teeth, aye?" before explaining the Regin intends to bind the hatchling to his will, before murdering Sigurd and conquering the north with a tame Dragon. But. Says the creepy old man, who appears to know things he really shouldn't. If you let Regin sleep, and when the egg hatches, you feed the hatchling and give it a name, it will be willing to bind it's fate to yours. Anyway. Food for thought. Says the old man. And then wanders off.

Long story short, Sigurd ends up with a harnessed dragon (Scandinavia’s first), Regin ends up with several feet of steel through his spine, and the sagas converge again, because having a dragon doesn't do you a lot of good if you don't have the sense god gave little green apples, but do have the insight check of a golden retriever puppy. (For those who aren’t familiar with the saga, Sigurd gets engaged, then drugged and forced to marry someone else, and while under the influence of said drugs is also forced into tricking his ex-fiancee into marrying his brother-in-law instead of him. It starts a blood feud that lasts about three generations and only ends when everyone related to anyone involved is dead. But that isn’t important here.)

Sigurd’s “success“ starts a trend of Norse magnates harnessing dragons, and a linking of the Udal (land) Rights with the support of Dragons. Specifically, amongst a Landowner's Udal rights, they include the right to dictate who on their land was permitted to support a dragon. (Also, a bunch of responsibilities regarding any harnessed dragons supported under their Udal rights)

Now because the Udal Rights (And the titles and land that go with them) are so closely tied to dragons, the Udal Right is entailed on the Magnate's Dragon, and on the Magnate's death, passes to the heir selected by the Dragon as partner. The fact that dragons basically control the inheritance of noble titles makes the relationship between the Norse and their dragons more of a partnership than you find elsewhere in Europe.

However this leads directly to the start of the Viking period as there are only so many Udal Rights available. So you end up with Dragon-riders who have no landrights of their own, and thus have to do something to make it palatable for someone who does have Udal Rights to permit them to support themselves off said magnates land. Obviously the solution is to provide expensive gifts while simultaneously requiring as little support as necessary. And oh, look. England isn't far. And it's rich. And it doesn't have many dragons, and those they do have are smaller and less invested.

My. That's a lovely monastery you have there, Lindisfarne. Be a shame if someone were to happen to it.

But everything changes when the fire nation Ragnar Lodbrok attacks shows up.

As in Ragnars Saga Lodbrokkar, Ragnar marries a princess who is descended from Sigurd Fafnirsbani

Unlike real world Ragnars Saga he does not kill the Dragon guarding her. As it happens to be Sigurds Dragon. Instead he convinces it to become his companion.

He makes the argument that as said Dragon was a key part of instituting the draconic elements of Udal Rights, and Udal Rights are conferred by the Dragon they are entailed upon, he has Udal Rights to all of Norway.

This a bullshit claim and not widely accepted, but he is able to sway enough magnates that it is never conclusively struck down, even if he never manages to enforce it.

But it sets a precedent.

Said precedent is latched onto by Harald Shaggy, who does manage to enforce it. With much bloodshed and strife. He then buys himself a comb, and hires a barber, and changes his cognomen to Fairhair. The bastard.

Now we have  a problem. Because we have a nation full of dragons that are used to agency, and aren't too pleased at being forced to yield it to some upstart Christsman who was fostered in DENMARK, of all places.  And one full of magnates who are used to being big fish in a medium pond and don't take too kindly to becoming medium fish in a big pond. But what's a good pagan dragon or ormscarl to do? Fairhair has the backing of a bunch of converts, traitors and sellouts, as well as the Danes and the English, and some of the Swedes, and the Saami, knowing which side of their bread does not have punitive campaigns marching over it, are staying decidedly neutral.

The answer? Fuck off to Iceland and found a new country! A Better Country! With Blackjack! And Hookers! And no centralized authority! And Votes For Dragons (STEP IN TIME!)

Of course, Iceland isn’t known for it’s forests, and eventually their boats start to fall apart, and Haakon the Good and St. Olaf show up with their Christianity and Organized Church and Monarchy, and treaties that they don’t even honour for a year, and everything falls apart.

The decline of the Icelandic Commonwealth actually happens slower. The dragons mean they’re less dependent on boats for fishing and whaling, although trade still suffers. Too, the shift to Christianity being the state religion takes longer, as dragons making impassioned speeches about “The faith of our fathers” and “Isn’t this why we left Norway in the first place” are impossible to ignore, if only because they’re so loud.

But it does happen, and the same trend of slowly tightening the restrictions on the pagan faiths until they are practically impossible to practice occurs. The Icelandic Diocese also does it’s very best to get rid of this pesky “Dragons are people, actually” thing these Icelanders seem to have come up with, a campaign aided by the fact that property in Iceland steadily ends up being held by the church (or church aligned families, me here, glowering at the Sturlissons), so most of the people well-enough off to support a Dragon are closely tied to the diocese.

HOWEVER! Dragons are long-lived, and more than capable of holding grudges, and in some of the more remote parts of Iceland, and some of the offlying islands and Skerries, dwell families that remember the old ways Some of them hold Gothi, or priest-rights, and eventually these end up being passed to their Dragons because it means they’re more likely to keep the traditions correctly. These families and their dragons are effectively a secret society, probably responsible for a pretty hefty chunk of North Atlantic piracy, and can be relied upon to meddle anytime it can inconvenience the Powers That Be.

Well, I Never!

Well guess what...I lost a follower. I only notice because I don't have many yet. I know who it was & probably why. Lolz! The remark made by my muerto, Rodolfo, about his opinion on the term "Latinx." It's not my opinion! I don't give a fuck. Rodolfo just basically said it was "fuckin dope" as in stupid. He prefers Hispanic, Latino or even Mexican. His favorite freaking colors are of the Mexico flag! Haha. I said he is old school but forgot to mention he was also military - Army. That makes a man very different, in my experience.

My husband, Tom, was an Army paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. Yeah - not a leg. Makes a man an entirely different breed. I'm not dismissing women, but I only speak of what I know. I've had close guy friends who went to the first Iraq war. It's something you just don't ask about. Anyway...why are "dark" dudes such pussies? Jesus, that's all I've encountered. Dated ONE & he was 12 years older than me. Such a whiny little bitch, and he was military too! Well, he was Navy - if that counts. Lol! Joking! Just funning. Guess he left his balls on a ship in Spain. Roflmao! 😂 Sorry, there's tons of joking between branches of the military. It's great.

Am I always this way? Yep, get used to it or move on. Not many people like me or accept me because I *upset* them. Waa! Lol. Actually, I'm very demure and polite in real time situations. I just let all my demons out online. I ended up like most women in my family - no lady friends but I sure love dudes! They love me too. I love cars, especially old ones & I can talk about them. Anyway, so some dark vampire/werewolf stopped following me. I'm just posting this in case he (I can't remember his pronouns!) comes back. 😅 Am I evil? Yes I am...so the old Metallica song goes...\m/ If ppl don't like my writings here, lemme know and I'll cease & go back to WordPress. My ppl there really love me warts & all. And my audience is older, like me. I'm very middle aged. I do have lots of things to share if you can stand my vernacular, writing style and sarcasm laced words. And obscenities.

I am good at not swearing though - I never, ever said a curse word around either one of my parents. Not once. I respected them. My mom was very hard. My dad was my world. Oh goddamn it! I don't have my Jet bracelet - it broke and my new one is in the mail! I wear Jet for grieving. It helps me not cry about my dad. It works well. Wear Jet if someone close to you passes away. The Victorians were correct! Not French Jet though!! That's nothing but black glass. I'll show you all my 104 year old French Jet necklace. I use it for channeling. Works great for being glass. Don't be fooled on Etsy with high prices unless it's old like mine.

Sorry, I'm all over the place, verbose and sped. Had a weird conversation with Yemanja earlier...don't know what to think. These changes swirling around are making me a little confused. I'm too old for this shit. Makes me just want to do nothing but my Muerteria. Use my cauldrons as vessels, perhaps. Not like Palo though, but kind of...I have been thinking, well, I need religion/spirituality, right? Now, I have no fuckin clue. Nada. Dunno. Roger that, Dahmer. 💀 I have always thought, need a god/ess, demon, etc. Maybe I don't. I really love my mother's though. 💖 They aren't a religion. Just stay away from the ATR folks. Lol. See, confused. We shall see & very soon. My dedication to Yemanja is five days away. A lot can change...I'll be doing divination, looking for signs & omens - anything. If anything breaks, burns, disappears, floats in mid-air - I'll be watching extra close! I'm freakin now!

My obligation to my kin whom I will never meet

On Friday nights, I go to a movie night with people I know from my community theatre. It's usually me, two cishet fellows and one cis gay man, whom is very old fashioned. Sometimes we have people who come and watch with us for a night but not the next. We usually watch 2 movies, have fun and call it a night.

But for the last 2 nights, one of the guys, who I'll be referring to as W, has been making some transphobic comments. It's nothing particularly unique, just the stock standard sneer about pronouns or something equally benign, or making fun of an enby friend of mine.

With the last visit, I did a bit of pushback, but the night ended with a long-winded conversation where I have to try and debunk his talking points but it was no use. The other two, while not as involved as W, were agreeing with him mostly.

Now I am sitting here and facing a bit of a moral dilemma. After I got home I spent a lot of time thinking about what W said, debunking his points and trying to come up with new points or arguments and I realized something. This would be the second night where I've come back from this feeling like crap, crestfallen to see him and others like him being idiots for no discernable reason.

On the other hand, I come off as straight quite easily, I hate coming off as grating or annoying so a lot of the time I tone myself down to be less of a hassle. I'm probably a lot of people's only exposure to non-gay people and that, I think, gives me a lot of leverage to change their minds when they are acting queerphobic.

I'm empathetic, possibly to the point of a flaw, but I try to listen and understand regardless of what you're saying. I also try to make them empathize and understand others who aren't cis or straight. But what if it's not working?

Because of my position of being unobtrusive and otherwise affable, I think I have an obligation, a duty, to speak for my trans siblings everywhere to try and stop people from spreading shit against them.

But what should I be willing to lose of myself to help them?

This is sort of the crux of what my whole post is about. I am in a position of privilege, leverage, a position to make a change. And I don't know if I'm doing enough. Have I actually changed someone's mind? Have I actually made them self-examine, or are they just tiptoeing around me because I've made them think I'm going to go off at them because I care about this so deeply?

Every time, I hear those jokes, those insults, a small part of me is hurt. A needle against my skin, sending me pain which I cannot remove. I try and speak them out of it but that just opens up the path for more needles. It just keeps coming and it makes me want to retreat... like a coward.

But then I think about my queer friends and how they must feel about it. They don't have the choice of retreat, they can't just not engage, for them it's either endurance or death. and then I think further on and I think about all the other trans people who have been hurt, are hurting, are dying and I once again feel like a coward for wincing at a candle when they are in a blaze.

I can try and keep putting myself in there, but I don't know how long I can keep it up. I want to put me, myself, my mind and body on the line but bits of me keep falling away, like necrotic carrion and I'm starting to get scared of what's going to be left behind when I am done.

So I'm facing this dilemma, of seeing how everyone else is hurting and knowing I can do so much work to help them all, maybe work that would get through better than if they did it, but possibly becoming less and less as time goes on. Or I leave, reaping the benefits of all of my queer forbearers who worked damn hard to put me in this place where I can live happily like this and spitting in their faces and in my friends faces.

As is probably well known by now candidate Mehmet Oz has been lambasted on late night TV and the internet for saying “...decisions over abortion should be left to ‘women, doctors, local political leaders.’” [1]  I saw the clip* and it almost sounded like he was going to say such decisions should be those of women and their doctors, but there was a split-second of “oops” before he remembered to iterate the talking point that elected officials should be involved, too.  I ask you: is that keeping government out of our personal business?  Doesn’t sound that way to me.

It reminded me of John Curtis from Utah who said he wished he, “as a man,” didn’t have to make such decisions! [2]  Uh, dude?  There seems to be some cognitive disconnect in your attempts to legislate.  Pick one: government (at any level) either keeps its distance from family matters or it doesn’t.  If you or someone in your family wants or does not want an abortion, or is trans, that’s no business of mine -- nor of elected office holders.

Say what you will about Nancy Pelosi, but a man breaking into her California residence at 2 AM screaming “Where’s Nancy!” and then continuing to attack her husband while the police are on the scene! just shows how people have let fear of change take over their lives.  “It was reported by CNN that the suspect intended to tie the victim [Paul Pelosi] up ‘until Nancy got home’ and that he had posted rightwing and conspiracy theories online, including content promoting the lie that Donald Trump was deprived of victory in the 2020 election because of voter fraud.” [3]

Oh yes - voter fraud.  A huge swath of candidates are standing up in front of the voting public stating “You should vote for me and as long as you vote for me -- and I win -- then the vote was clearly legit BUT IF MY OPPONENT WINS IT WILL ONLY BE BECAUSE OF FRAUD!”  There’s probably something listed in that mental disorder manual for this kind of belief.

Oy.  Anyway --

Lesley McClurg reported for NPR on All Thing Considered [4] about a Texas family that re-located to California for the sake of their transgender daughter:

“After decades of building a life in Texas, a mother suddenly worried she might be investigated for child abuse.  'We were stunned that – it was no longer safe for us to be there.'  She requested we not use her name, because earlier this year Texas governor Greg Abbott ordered Family Protective Services to investigate parents with transgender kids. 

The mother started hearing stories about children who were pulled out of classrooms and interrogated -- 'With their parents not being there, and these were children that had only socially transitioned; all they asked for was to be called a different pronoun.  That's terrifying.' Her own twelve year-old daughter socially transitioned three years ago when she asked her family and friends to use feminine pronouns. 'And so we sat down and we talked to our kid; we gave her a little card to go to school with that listed her rights and told her what to do if somebody came to investigate us.'  

But the family could not relax; they sold their home, and this fall they packed up all their belongings and moved to Southern California. 'It feels very good to not feel like you're in danger; y'know, on that really critical place of, like, our family being ripped apart.'”

State senator Scott Wiener (above) who has experienced serious on-line trolling and death threats himself, has authored a new law for California that shields families from investigations from other states, and guarantees access to hormones or puberty blockers. He says that California law enforcement will not follow the laws of other states or honor subpoenas that criminalize such families, nor will California “send them back.”

But of course supporting families goes against the grain for some; Greg Burt of California Family Council opposes the law.  He believes that children will regret making any transition, saying that hormones and puberty blockers make “permanent” changes.  He would rather “encourage young people to try and get their minds to match their bodies.”  That in the face of suicide prevention organization The Trevor Project finding that “45% of transgender youth have considered killing themselves in the last year.”  Burt’s comments sound an awful lot like a re-hash of the very discredited “conversion therapy” that was promulgated against the gay community.  “Just pray it away!”

In contrast to Dr. Oz, Executive Director Kathie Moehlig of TransFamily Support Services in San Diego says “The politicians should not be making medical decisions for anybody, nor should they be making parental decisions for anybody.”  Her son got puberty blockers 10 years ago when at age 11, and Moehlig believes 'My son would not still be alive if we waited to 18...' because of the stress he felt as his body developed.  Today the young man is studying theology in college.

It seems that what I’m hearing, at least in the sound-bites, is that there are some politicians who want government to strenuously protect individual rights, and especially property rights, and support “family values” (remember that bumper sticker?) and even want parents to have significant input on teachers’ and schools’ educational choices -- unless those individuals are women or the families have transgender children.  “Keep government out of our business!  Unless you’re pregnant!  Or queer!  Then get all up in that!  Fuck yeah!”

Women’s work: anything, basically, that men decide they’re bored doing: chopping wood, making dinner, tending the children, banking the fire all year long, making and mending the clothes --- and to think people actually re-enact this shit: not your average cottegecore.  Virginia State Parks.

Do they want to make women property?  Is this the 18th Century?  Do some people desperately want it to be the 18th Century?  Are witch trials next?
