After like a year or two of being buds to good buds to best buds, you finally confessed and he surprisingly felt the same way!! Kel and his dad pretty much knew the whole time, but his mom kept denying it and saying "they're just best friends……."

But when you and Hero came back home from college, he asked if you wanted to meet his family face to face (because you have only been able to video chat with them whenever you were hanging out with Hero in your dorms) and you gladly said yeah. Everyone welcomed you as family and was happy for both of you. Kel May or may not have been like "Ew romance" but that's just how he is. His mom though was like "Oh!" and just needed a moment to process because she never thought Hero would get a s/o anytime soon. But she greeted you and was very nice so no worries!!!

One time you were visiting Hero and you both had to babysit Sally because everyone else was away. He was just done making lunch and was about to tell you until he saw you on the couch. He couldn't help but shed a tear of how cute and gentle you were with Sally, he instantly knew you'd be an awesome parent if you wanted to!!!

You were a bit worried about why he was crying but he quickly said you were just adorable when you were all cuddled up with his little sister. Sally was all fast asleep beside you while you snuggled her up close to your chest as you were watching TV with a blanket.

This kinda depends of how much energy you got because if you're like leaning more into the calm and relaxed type, you'll just watch him being a complete idiot in awe. He likes it because he knows your don't mind his chaotic nature (most of the time). But if you match his energy, oh god. Everything will go down hill. You'll both at least commit 5 crimes in a day. It might be really fun, but you both need someone to stop you. Like Hero perhaps.

You have known each other for a long time ever since the whole gang even formed. You both were best friends and was the only people who didn't close off which you both can agree were greatful for. You would invite him to do something to keep his mind off of things for a bit after Mari's death, and all the stress and worries about Hero. It helped and he just couldn't stop thanking you. His parents adores you for trying your best. Kel also helps you too in many different ways, you guys have each other.

When Sunny finally left his house to hangout with Kel before he moved away, they both invited you to tag along, in which you gladly agreed on. Sunny noticed the tension between you two and pointed it out. Let's just say you were both a red burning mess after that.

Sunny was kinda the one who egged Kel on to confess to confess to you because of the obvious crush, so thanks to him.

Kel usually asks Hero for relationship advices. He would also ask his dad, but they're always so long and dumb in his opinion.

During the strolls, you guys just just look at the night sky and admire the stars and moon while holding hands and rant about your favorite things ! During the movie nights, you just lay on the sofa with snacks in the table, a blanket covering the two who was all cuddled up, probably watching some horror or action movie.

Kel loves to creep up on you and scare you when you're not looking, he finds your reaction hilarious.

Dumping some OMORI he's! First up, Sunny!

- Sunny is pretty delayed mentally due to reverting to childhood as such as a coping mechanism as well as the delay of being home for four years after Mari's death when he was 12 just sleeping and doing the bare minimum to care for himself alongside the neglect from his mother so alongside physical growth he is mentally stunted. mentally for a while, he is 12

- Kel is usually the one being told he stinks/hj but you know it bad when Kel is shoving Sunny to shower or something because of how long he's neglected himself people don't wanna talk about how long you neglect themselves with depression and stuff and how bad it is I think he rarely bathed during those four years and the trauma heightened everything too so that near drowning experience before made him just not wanna be in water too and just some sensory related issues with water

- he has very sensitive hearing and tons of sensory issues He gets overstimulated easily and it is a whole mess because he can't express himself well

- he's autistic and selectively mute adhd too

- he uses sign language alongside just physical contact and stuff and or communication cards and just writing stuff

- Sunny goes non-verbal even if it's not stressful but it's just a big thing and all or a stressor he reverts

- Sunny has a scar where his eye was stabbed He goes between just with his eye/socket or just an eyepatch too

- has to wear sunscreen just to go outside or else he will just be burned. (It's good to protect yourself anyway) but Sunny is just so pale and sensitive skin and Mari always ingrained it into him to lather sunscreen to go outside

- Sunny is hard of hearing

- he narrates himself whenever he's stressed

- so sunny isn't good at expressing himself and he got it from mimicking how Mari handles herself So when he can't verbalize his feelings and all and she isn't getting any the hints no matter what he resorted to throwing and breaking the violin as the I'm fed up to get her attention and it backfired because before she's find out the problem becomes she understood breaking things as a means id expressing because I see her having the issue as a kid and just she realizes it's not socially acceptable so its put more like Squeezing things and nails in her hands type thing but she just assumes sunny was doing it to make her made rather rhan expressing jt

The autistic to autistic communication is not communicating and Sunny wanted to verbalize it and react to the overwhelming emotions without hurting himself or someone else so he acted out on the violin but Mari, his safe space, getting so angry and for a skittish kid and sensitive one he felt threatened and was scared so it resulted in the shove

- He particularly mimics Mari a lot in general so they share a lot of habits and all because of the mimicking and just being family and close but she is his go-to if he has to mimic and he doesn't even realize he's doing it

Mari and everyone thought it was cute at first until Mari realized oh he's doing what I do

- I also think Mari & Sunny's parents weren't particularly good about dealing with Sunny selective mutism and also his neutral expression that was only ever changed when he cried or something and Sunny attempted to poorly

I feel like in general on this blog, I really do undersell exactly how private & introverted of a person I am used to be creatively, particularly in fandom spaces. When I say I've been entrenched fandom for a long time, I am not joking. Despite this, you'd be hard-pressed to find most fandom content I produced until...well, until this blog!

In fact, unless you know me in real life, it's unlikely you've ever seen any art which I've posted OUTSIDE of this blog, which is saying something, because there is a LOT of it, both original, and for shitloads of different fandoms. I am, at my core, an artist, as pretentious as that sounds; I create ad nauseam.

Despite this, I very rarely post publicly. The few times I have created a public page to post art, it was incredibly infrequent. And most of them are deleted, now. In fact, this blog is possibly the first time I've made an online account for fan content (or art in general) that has achieved general notoriety anywhere, and it's incredibly fun, but it has made me painfully aware that there's something of a reason I deleted most of my public art accounts...(/lh)

But seriously, I keep a comically low profile, despite enjoying both creating and receiving praise for creating. Part of it has to do with the particular way inspiration strikes me (the periods where I don't post to this blog are mostly actually because I'm looking for proper vision, despite wanting to create) which is why my creation of these sorts of things is so infrequent, because I know most people (particularly artists) don't do that, and it can be very concerning or frustrating to anyone paying attention.

It also creates a rather daunting prospect of creating something "good enough to share", which I have been increasingly working on not giving a shit about. And sometimes building relationships with people who sort of expect you to post/message them often, because that's the only way they know you're alive. I barely even talk to my irl friends as often as some people want to over the internet with me. It's wild.

I'm not complaining about the popularity of this blog by any means, nor how people have been interacting with it, I mostly just wanted to share that despite how it might look, it's actually significantly more normal for me to post basically nothing for months at a time and then have a burst of inspiration leading me to make like 3 posts that leave people raving for a week, then disappear of the face of the earth completely.

Like, you wanna talk how I normally am with art, I have piles of old Undertale doodles & fanfiction, which almost no one has seen, and I probably won't ever post again. I have art for a fandom I was in for maybe a week and have never done anything for again. I have drawn YouTubers I no longer watch. I have OCs which I haven't thought about in actual years. I have world concepts I literally used for a single drawing and nothing else. I have Omori fics and drawings I literally never posted publicly. There are probably people waiting on an update to a fic I wrote 6 years ago (when I was 15).

You wanna talk me in fandom spaces? There are people I know from my Undertale fandom days who I'm surprised are still posting. I know nearly every major artist in the Omori fandom on some sort of personal note (I'm still in a Discord with some of them), and they're the people who've seen my unpublished Omori art/fics. I would post stuff maybe once every month or two in that server. Most of them probably don't even realize they know me.

I know fandom drama I didn't even care about when it was happening.

For the better part of my life I've been the fandom equivalent to a mysterious stranger, blowing into a fandom maybe once a week, then once a month, then never again, people forgetting I was even ever there. There are friends I've made over social media who I've not seen or spoken to in an actual decade.

I just live my life. I make shit. Sometimes I'm active in a particular space on social media for a while. I meet some new people. I am cheesed to meet them. The case goes cold. I continue living my life. I go elsewhere.

I think this is both vitally important to understand on the internet, especially in a fandom sense (The Internet is not your life, please remember that you can literally turn your computer off and leave) and also a really bad habit I have that, while somewhat amusing, means that by nature a lot of the new friendships I make are temporary.

Also, if ever we message each other and I stop talking to you, that's not because I'm mad or forgot you or something; if I don't have anything to say I don't say anything. Small talk is my bane because it feels dishonest. Offer to play TF2 or Overwatch with me or something.

Now that I'm thinking about it, this is actually generally applicable to all online spaces I'm in, which might make the entire thing seem a little silly... There are people I've met on online games like Roblox, or old flash games, or old websites where you can PLAY those flash games, who I just disappeared from one day. A lot more of my life than I thought is intrinsically ephemeral...hm.

It's to the point that a lot of people know who I am but don't realize who I actually am because my name is sorta generic, so they don't make the connection. I make a lot of jokes about it on my main but most people don't even realize I'm The Mind Electric Guy who made the big mash-ups and also the Catboy Electric. And Johnny Johnny Electric but we don't talk about that one.

There are times where I'll have people in my comments/messages going "wait YOU'RE THAT GUY? YOU MADE THAT?!?!" about something completely unrelated, and i'm just like "yeah i was bored on a saturday". I'm like the Neil Cicierega of obscure internet/niche fandom bullshit.

Wait, so I'm like Neil Cicierega. And I've been told I resemble him more than once, so maybe that's fitting.

As a reward for making it through my silly ramblings, here's a little proof in the pudding! Here's some incredibly old DDLC fanart from my initial obsession to a little later, not exactly in chronological order. You can really see my improvement as an artist, which is actually pretty funny, because imitating some other DDLC fanartists is specifically how I started getting better at drawing people

These are incredibly old! You can tell, because they look like SHIT! I didn't really know a lot about how to draw people at this point in time, and what became my style was super poorly defined here! I have some other super old art which really shows off how bad i was at drawing people, particularly in the waist. Believe it or not, this is a better showing than most others around this time.

This right here, this is the exact moment where drawing faces started to click for me. I still think this is one of my best showings from this particular time period, even though it's still got a lot of line jank, and I'm pretty blatantly ripping from a different artist (who no longer has an online presence, so weh, have at it). I still really like this drawing, and a lot of the experimentation that was on this page.

These are a weird period where I'm drawing a lot of different things on the same sketchbook page just to fill them up, which...I mean, I guess I should be proud I used to draw that much! They certainly do look cool, too. This image of Sayori in an Adidas tracksuit is directly referenced from a picture of a Sayori cosplayer I found on Instagram once upon a time. The @ you see pictured there is my old private instagram--you can try to follow it, but I doubt you're going to get anywhere!

I think a big problem you see in a lot of these is just that I'm uncertain in my lines, even in sketching and doodling, which is still a problem I struggle with sometimes. Also I don't really get how clothes work. But this is significantly better than how some of my old art used to look like, so I'm glad for that!

I really didn't like how this turned out when I first did it. I don't often do digital pieces and even less often work in color, but when i do, they tend to take a lot of time and effort. I think this is definitely rough around the edges, but the amount of work I put in to really make this pop is something I enjoy. Just wish I'd spent longer on those hands...

Sunny knows a lot about the subject of depression and overall not feeling very good since he has been in this situation for years because of the Mari incident.

He knows the pain and doesn't want anybody else to experience it, even if it's for a different reason.

He's a very attentive person toward the people he likes, you are no exception. He would be more attentive to your body language because that is something he can read quite well.

Once he started noticing your body language slowing down, becoming more distanced and unenergized, he knew something was up.

He didn't want to talk to you about it right away, so he showed you that he cared first.

He makes sure you weren't alone like he was throughout the death of his sister. He tries to visit you more than he already does.

Even though he isn't a fan of doing stuff, he tries to get you to do stuff inside the comfort of your own home.

He likes to watch stuff, so you guys binge-watch many of your favourite movies, some movies you wanted to see, and maybe some to get a laugh out of you.

He respects your space, he doesn't want to overwhelm you with constant company because he knows that sometimes people just want to be alone.

When he notices you haven't been taking care of yourself, he won't try and push you to do things, since he knows it isn't that easy.

He instead, will do the things he wants you to do, and invite you to do them with him.

"Hey. I'm going to brush my teeth… Want to come with me.?" or "I'm making some food. Want to come help me?"

He tries to make himself a safe space without telling you that he is a safe space. He wants you to make that decision whether you want to tell him what's up or not.

Aubrey cares about you. She will listen to you and she tries to do stuff for you.

Aubrey notices it fairly quickly, but she only notices it may be kind of serious if it has been going on for a while.

If it's just a day or 2 of you acting off, she won't think anything of it, that it's just an off day for you.

If it's like a week, she will start to suspect that something is up.

At first, she starts to think that somebody did something to you.

She will ask you stuff like "do you need me to beat anyone up?" Every once in a while because If you're with her, there's NO way she would allow anybody to do anything to you.

She wants answers, so she will kind of pry into you, it may not be the best thing to do, but she has good intentions.

If you tell her what's up, she will try to do everything in her power to try and make you feel better again.

She is there to listen, she is there to talk, she is there to distract you, she is there for you.

She knows what it feels like to be abandoned at your lowest point, so she makes a huge effort to stick with you through everything.

She likes to get you out of the house. That's a big thing for her. She saw what staying inside for long periods of time does for somebody. But she does know that some days are just indoor days.

If you like the hooligans, you all will hang out, but if you're not the biggest fans of them, Aubrey will respect that and have some 1-on-1 outdoor time with her.

She knows how to cook pretty well, so she will cook you some actually good meals to keep you healthy.

Wants to be by your side the entire time. She is kind of clingy in hopes that you will feel better, so hope you don't mind that!

She puts you first. Before she can do anything, she needs to know if you're ok; If you ate, drank water, slept, or anything else.

No clue if anyone's made this connection before. But in case it hadn't been pointed out. I wanna talk about one particular infamous room in Omori and how I think it is not only an absolute brilliant display of forcing the player into the protagonists shoes in terms of emotion, but also... parallels another scene and perhaps sheds a little light on it through that.

Spoilers for late game Omori underneath lol. And trigger warning for the content involved in late game Omori.

So, the Mewo room-

As a standalone piece it does an amazing job representing the general feeling Sunny is struggling with without directly revealing The Truth. The feeling of being trapped, and the only apparent escape being to hurt someone who doesn't deserve to be hurt, an innocent creature who barely even understands what's happening...

You can refuse to do it, and discover the true way out before making a decision you'll regret. And you, the player, will most likely feel relief at uncovering this other option. This feature that in the early game feels more horrific, a trigger in and of itself, suddenly being a relief- showing exactly how someone can view something like that as the better option. Because you're desensitized to your own suffering and this option- but making someone else suffer? That's so much worse.

Or! You don't realize the other option at first. You think there is only one option. You hurt them... and then you realizing that was never the way out to begin with. You hurt them for no reason. You're still trapped here, you didn't need to do that, it didn't help you at all, and you can't undo the damage you did. All you can do is take the true exit out.

... Basil is Mewo.

At the end of the Blackspace segment where Basil gets dragged off and we watch Omori cut him open... it's practically a beat for beat parallel of the cutting open Mewo progression. HEAR ME OUT.

And storywise...

Basil is, in Sunny's eyes, an innocent loved one who doesn't truly understand what's going on that he is actively choosing to hurt for the sake of trying to get out of this hellish situation he finds himself trapped in.

Sunny's primary driving force is guilt. 

Guilt over letting Basil suffer, and knowing that he's suffering because Sunny is choosing to let him believe in a lie to protect himself. Choosing to let Basil protect him and keep his secret. And of course it's more complicated than that- Sunny was just a kid, he wasn't making the active choice to hurt his friend or make these calculated decisions to rope Basil into covering for him.

But that's how he views it. An outside perspective can very easily see that he was literally twelve years old and entirely incapable of handing this situation, without malicious intent, just clumsily navigating a situation that would be difficult to handle even as an adult. But people are rarely so kind to themselves. From Sunny’s perspective all he can see is the outcome- The fact that it all stemmed from him, so that’s how he conceptualizes himself. A selfish person who's willing to let someone who cares about him to suffer to protect Mari's killer because Basil believes that it couldn't possibly be true- when Sunny knows that it is.

Sunny knows it was him who pushed Mari. He knows there wasn't "something behind him" that pushed Mari. He was upset and he pushed her. He didn't mean to kill her, of course he didn't, it was an accident. But he pushed her. He knows this.

But Basil couldn't believe that Sunny would ever do anything like that. Sunny's good. Sunny's a good person! He would never push Mari like that, he would never have caused something like this to happen. Good people don’t do that. And of course it wasn't his intention, but in the wake of this horrible accident, his inability to accept the truth of the matter placed the idea in Sunny's head that a good person would never have done this. No nuance, no areas of grey.

Sunny was a good person. So he couldn't have possibly done this.

But Sunny did. So what did that make him?

He was a bad person. He killed his sister. And he couldn't tell his friend that he was wrong and that it was his fault, because he was still reeling from the trauma of watching his sister die and knowing it was his fault. A sheer panic state of terror and self preservation, this terrible awful unimaginable thing has happened, how can you even begin to process it, let alone give a counterargument to your friend who has convinced himself of a distortion of reality and is taking drastic steps to help the "good person" he thinks you are?

And then in the aftermath... it's already done. Too late to go back, isn't it? How do you even begin to explain?

No way out. You feel completely and utterly trapped. And you watch your friend that you care about continue to try to help you, while also hurting you because he doesn't understand the reality of what happened, and he's a constant reminder that you are a bad person, and you can't explain the truth to him because... then what? What happens to you?

And you watch your friend suffer because of this gulf between you- you know him better than anyone, you know exactly what this will do to him, but you just can't stay like this. You need to get out. And so you let him take the fall for you, and try to forget, but you never really do. This lie you let him believe and the choice he made because of it follows you around like a ghost.

Sunny doesn't want to cut open Mewo. 

Sunny doesn't want Basil to suffer trying to protect him. 

It's just a matter of trying to find a real way out of this nightmare they're trapped in.

I wanna cry! I really don’t want Kel to win!

It’s really gonna say a lot about the OMORI fandom and I’m gonna be disappointed

I just want Basil or Sunny to win the whole thing...they’re both really amazing and relatable characters. While Kel is a relatable character, Sunny and Basil hit harder for me personally

I don’t hate or dislike any of the OMORI characters...it’s just...gonna be painful if Kel wins in my eyes

(And no, I do not kin any characters! That is not why I don’t want Kel to win)

I would prefer Basil or Sunny to win because I feel like no one even sees Kel for his character and are just voting him because of memes rather than how amazing of a character he is

Like...he didn’t understand or completely grasp the reality of Mari’s death. He was probably in a lot of shock which is why he didn’t fully grasp it or show any sadness on the outside. He tried making new friends to distract himself from how painful life was at the moment, so he can actually be stable, happy and continue to be himself. What also makes Kel a relatable character is the fact that his parents (subconsciously or not) pretty much choose favorites and go to Hero’s aid instead of Kel’s. They see Hero as this amazing person and Kel...he’s just some athletic boy to them. Hero always cared for Kel and Kel even cares for Hero, it’s just painful to see the parents help one child and not the other in both of their time in need. Kel is a very humorous guy as shown in game and is an amazing friend to all of the characters in game...it just saddens me that I feel like people are overlooking how much depth Kel has and are only really voting him because memes and fnuuy man...

It really is odd to go through the main cast of OMORI characters because to me, it really does feel like people only like Kel for the memes rather then who he actually is as a character, a cool, helpful, caring dude with a great sense of humor and a positive outlook on life

It honestly saddens me in general for people to misunderstand characters or for parts of a character to be completely overshadowed by something else about them that has been over-saturated by the fandom to death. A great example of this is Mr. Resetti from Animal Crossing. His character is misunderstood by a good portion of the Animal Crossing fandom and the fandom overdid his anger and made it his only personality trait, completely overshadowing his actual character and what bits of his background there is.

...damn...I didn’t expect to go on a rant where I talk about Kel’s character and then give an example of how people misunderstand a character (Basil is also a misunderstood character where his character flies right over people’s heads)

Hello. I have a question. I saw a post you made a while ago about queerbaiting in Omori, and I've been driving myself crazy trying to think of any instance of it in the game itself. Maybe I'm blind and I missed it? Or was it something Omocat said that I'm not privy to? Could you explain?

 ah, yes, of course! sorry in advance if this ends up seeming a bit jumbled, I’m not very awake right now aha,, I’m also planning on making a much more fleshed out post about it at some point.

I’ll put this under a read more because this might end up getting a little long (spoilers ahead)

[EDIT: 6/14; despite writing this all the way back in february, I started getting so much flack for this post recently and I just wanna say you don’t have to agree with anything I say or give this post any attention if you don’t like it bc the amount of harassment I got for one post I typed up while half asleep is absurd. this post barely had 100 notes at the time and it only has like 150 now and yet people were really acting like it was some huge deal. this is merely my own thoughts, opinion, and analysis of something I’m personally passionate about and I don’t care if you don’t care. don’t read or comment on my post then if you’re not going to be civil about it. if you weren’t baited by OMORI, that’s great! I’m glad you didn’t have such a negative experience like me and other people I know! this is just my own experience that I wanted to analyze and put into words so other people could relate to, or at least see where I’m coming from]

I think before talking about the game itself, it’s important to look at things from a pre-release perspective, and consider promotional stuff along with OMOCAT’s general content over the years.

along the time of production, Basil has always been presented as a plot-important character, especially in regards to his relationship with Sunny.

and the 2020 release trailer was really highlighting it too-

anyone that watches the trailer would know that these two characters are connected somehow. obviously that doesn’t necessarily mean romantically, and there’s a lot more depth to it than that, but I think the framing of everything is still really important. (the thumbnail is two boys holding hands!!)

now I’ll be fair, I can’t deny that a lot of promotional art is also of Omori and Aubrey, but much more explicitly with romantic undertones.

I have a lot of thoughts about this though, my main one being that I never thought much of it, or thought it meant anything. of course, it’s an opinion, but I’ll explain why I feel that way.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with presenting child Aubrey as being attached to, and even having a small crush on, Omori. it’s fine, and it can be cute, but in promotional art, and even the game itself, it always came across to me as being one-sided, and just a bit superficial. I’ll try to go more in depth on that later.

[EDIT: 6/3; looking back I didn’t mention some things I wanted to (I didn’t edit this post very well) anyways. there actually is a fair bit of older OMORI promo art/concept art of SunnyAubrey which is fine! they’re OMOCAT’s characters and she can ship her ocs as she pleases, but what grinds my gears about it is that when you look at all of these old concepts that show that these two were probably going to be a Thing, it makes it 100% worse that at the last minute all of the promotional framing was about Sunny and Basil. only for everything in the game to become about SunnyAubrey in the end out of nowhere. hmmm smells like queerbait, OMOCAT!]

[EDIT: 6/14; I keep coming back to edit this post for some reason. anyways my point here is that if OMOCAT wants to draw ship art of her own characters that’s all fine and dandy, but why draw gay art of your characters and then not have any explicit gay rep in your game?? why set the expectation of “oh so some of these characters might be gay” and then not have anyone be gay I just don’t get it]

I think anyone that’s followed OMOCAT for a while knows that she isn’t a stranger to making queer content. I don’t feel like looking for every tiny example bc it’s mostly irrelevant, but what is relevant is the general knowledge that OMOCAT makes gay things, sometimes. hell, one of her most well known characters is Pretty Boy-

[EDIT: 8/9-8/13; with Pretty Boy I think it’s also worth noting that at the time it got popular, OMOCAT was profiting off of their fujoshi/fudanshi merch, and generally had cultivated an audience that was made up of a lot of fujoshi. something that’s interesting to me is how in this interview, OMOCAT states they don’t read BL manga because they find smut “distracting” (presumably from the plot). the interesting thing about that to me is that OMOCAT has said that one of their inspirations for OMORI was Oyasumi Pun Pun, which from the 60 odd chapters I’ve read, is a plot heavily revolving around sex and sexual discovery. idk, I can’t help but feel like the thought process here is “media about sex is okay, but nono not if it’s about gay people” or that media about gay people is inherently sexual. and treating gay people like they’re dirty and only focused on sex is homophobic rhetoric that’s been around for fucking ever... when I read this interview it sounds like someone saying “I’m going to make a gay story that’s Better because it’s going to be Pure and Romantic, because No One has Ever done That before.” it’s just weird to me. and, idk, when I think about how OMOCAT’s content tended to cater to fujoshi it’s just. kind of strange]

so to round out what I’m saying so far, we have OMOCAT, a creator who sometimes makes queer content, making a video game where the plot seemingly revolves around two boys and their relationship with each other, and also drawing some wishy-washy gay art of the characters in the game. not to mention it being an EarthBound inspired game (EarthBound having an explicitly gay character, and other EarthBound inspired games also being very LGBT positive, and generally attracting large gay audiences). maybe it was just me, but all of this together already gave me expectations that OMORI was in some way, going to be at least a little gay.

and throughout most of the game, I was actually pleasantly surprised because it felt like it was. the entire game’s plot revolved on their importance to each other, to the point that it even describes it’s own narrative as a string of fate-

and the game spent so long hammering in how close they were, and how important they are to each other, to a degree that wasn’t done with any other character.

I don’t even have screenshots of everything I could add, but, my second point here is that going through this game where the most important relationship is between two male characters, while also keeping in mind my point from before, it feels safe to say that thinking it was going to end at least ambiguously gay, or not having any confirmed relationships at all, isn’t much of a stretch.

however, there was so. so much gay-coding with Basil. I don’t think my words can explain how apparent his crush is better than the game itself so-

this doesn’t even come close to the amount of stuff I could put in, which really goes to show how much this game was pushing Basil’s feelings. his entire character can be summed up with “I’m gay and willing to risk it all” which. he quite literally did do everything because he cared about Sunny so much. ofc it’s normal to care about your friends, but can anyone say that a straight person with platonic feelings would do/say half the things Basil does.

[EDIT: 6/3; to add to Basil’s gay-coding, he’s also a very quaint, effeminate boy who has a lot of non-masculine hobbies. obviously not every gay man is like that, and there are plenty of non-masculine men in real life who aren’t gay, but please think about how gay men are usually presented in media to begin with. Also literally exactly how OMOCAT made Pretty Boy. there’s a pattern there. it’s also a kind of painful coincidence that both Pretty Boy and Basil are bully victims. OMOCAT are you trying to say something here]

[EDIT: 6/9; coming back to this specifically because I’ve gotten a couple comments on it and people seem to not know how to read properly and I guess I have to spell everything out. there are existing gay stereotypes in media. OMOCAT uses these tropes with her gay/gay-coded characters. I see this, and I immediately assume Basil is also going to be a canonically gay character. I’ve said before in other posts that I wouldn’t have an issue if things were left ambiguous, however, there Are existing romantic subplots in this game, and all of them are heterosexual. that’s what upsets me, and you don’t have to share my feelings]

another point I want to add here, going back to EarthBound for a second, is something a friend of mine brought up to me when we were talking about queerbaiting a while ago. she was telling me about the gay character in EarthBound (Tony), and how Basil reminded her of him. she then did some deep diving and found-

so then our gut reaction was “okay so Basil is based off of this canonically gay character, right? right?” not to mention, the other character in this drawing looking very suspiciously like Omori. (the Omori Boy blog was originally created in 2011)

... but that is just a theory.

in any case, Basil is a clearly gay-coded character. and I wouldn’t have a problem at all with him and Sunny not getting together in the end, because that’s fine. if the game was left ambiguous with no one getting together I wouldn’t mind all that much because all of that gay-coding would still be there. but, I wouldn’t call this game queerbait if that’s all that it was, because unfortunately there came a point where there was a switch.

I really did not like this.

I said before, I didn’t mind if child Aubrey had a little crush on Omori/Sunny. I also said I never even got that big of an impression in the game itself that she did, let alone that Sunny had any kind of feelings for her. at the very least it felt more one-sided.

getting through this entire game, where we have a string of fate narrative between two boys where at least one of them is heavily gay-coded, only to be met at the very end by the gay-coded character asking his crush if he has a crush on their female friend, all coming out of seemingly nowhere, felt like the biggest punch in the gut.

[EDIT: 8/13; many people say things like “oh, you’re not supposed to take that line seriously! they’re kids!” and like. yeah, I can see if that’s the case, that we’re not supposed to think too hard about that kind of one-off line. but. that’s not... accurate to how most people tend to think. if you present a line like “you have a crush on her” then people are gonna take that and run with it. and they do. people use this kind of line to hold it over people’s heads whenever anyone tries to argue about the possibility of character’s being lgbt. whatever way it was intended to be read, it’s just straight up bigot fodder]

and then we’re supposed to continue and finish the game as if this was how it always was.

... where was this, exactly?

of course we know Sunny and Aubrey were close as kids, all of them were close with each other, but throwing this in when we haven’t seen that level of closeness at all between them in the entire game felt so superficial to me. I love Aubrey, and she and Sunny have a very good friendship, but this all felt like a huge disrespect to her, as well as gay people playing this game.

we’re meant to suddenly act as if this was her and Sunny’s relationship all along but......... this was him and Basil. since the beginning of the game, and for the entire way through, that was what their relationship was shown to be as.

I was just so shocked. Aubrey and Kel had more chemistry throughout the game than whatever this last minute pull was. this isn’t me trying to start shit with ships, I’m just looking at the game’s writing itself.

despite their bickering, Kel and Aubrey were shown to be extremely close friends, and then OMOCAT wants me to believe that her and Sunny were always the closest out of nowhere. okay, sure.

anyways, after I finished OMORI, it hit me that there are no explicitly gay characters, despite everything I talked about before. sure, Pretty Boy makes a cameo appearance, but it doesn’t really count for anything. and yes, Space Boyfriend is canonically trans, but he wasn’t even created by OMOCAT, and you could play the entire game without even knowing he’s trans, so it doesn’t really seem like it counts as good representation either (I am cis, so take that opinion with a grain of salt.)

[EDIT: 6/14; this is a bit of a tangent unrelated to queerbaiting, but I wanted to address it here. I got a lot of harassment for what I said about Space Boyfriend and I didn’t respond to any of it bc I didn’t want to argue with a bunch of teens on the internet but I’ll just say what I want to here. I’m not saying Space Boyfriend as a standalone character is bad rep, I think it’s great he’s canonically trans. what I mean here is that OMOCAT chose not to have any explicit LGBT rep in her game, including not representing an actual trans character that originally belonged to someone else. I never gave any opinion on how trans rep could have been done differently bc why would that be my place. I wouldn’t even have said it seems like poor rep in the first place if Jami Lynne didn’t say it was sad herself. but if even that is too out of turn an opinion to have as a cis person, then I’ll recognize that]

an entire EarthBound inspired RPG game, made by a creator known for her LGBT comic characters, that had a string of fate narrative between two boys, and in the end didn’t have a single explicitly gay character. it feels quite bad, frankly. 

and that why the queerbaiting makes me so upset. because even though Basil is so gay-coded, because of him asking Sunny if he has a crush on Aubrey, all of his feelings can be completely overlooked. this is why people can say “Basil isn’t gay” and it can’t be disproven with canon evidence. a game doesn’t need to have a character say “I’m gay” or “I love you” for them to be canonically queer, but. OMOCAT decided to use that line to write off any possibility of ambiguity.

[EDIT: 6/9; about that last one in particular, I guess people don’t know kawoshin anymore which is wild so I really have to keep spelling things out for people. they’re a really influential gay pairing and have been at the forefront of “are they canonically gay?” debates for decades, but are generally accepted as being queer-coded. referencing them is like a flat out saying of “this is gay, but we’re not going to actually say it.” so for OMOCAT to de-canonize all of Basil’s implied feelings at the end of the game, only to draw sunnflower as kawoshin a few weeks after the game’s release, is the biiiiiiggest slap in the face]

Okay at first I was like this is so funny, but also now....I want it. I want it bad. Maybe it’s just because I’m in a mood...but also yeah okay so

Mari is the Don and Hero is her “mobwife”. She always tests people who are coming in for the first time to ask for something. If they immediately go to suck up to Hero because they think he’s the Don, then she usually doesn’t give them what they want. If when they disregard him when they find out he’s only her husband, then she definitely doesn’t give them what they are asking for (and sometimes they end up dead) She is outwardly very intimidating, and the only people who aren’t absolutely terrified of her are her immediate family. She’s usually found sitting at her piano with her husband and whoever of her family is home listening to her play as she runs her business. Mari runs her business in a semi-democratic way, but ultimately her word is law. 

The bakery is their front. Daphne and Bowen are also high up in the organization, and they refuse to let Mikhael join in no matter how much he pouts about it. They see Mari’s organization as a necessary evil, and they tolerate it, but they won’t directly participate unless its a dire situation. Rather the twins are a set of semi-consigliere type characters. They advise Mari and help her to keep her temper and her clear head. If they disagree with a decision she makes Mari feels wrong, because the two of them and Hero are the people who have the best understanding of grey morals that she knows. The four of them will spend hours and hours debating morals and ethics together, and they’re incredibly close

Hero doubles as the consigliere alongside being her “mobwife” to the public. To the outer world he is just her sweet, almost vapid, husband who loves to cook and works at the bakery and takes care of the younger generation (Basil, Sunny, Aubrey, and Kel) in the organization. In reality he is the one that does the direct deals with the above world. Politicians, Business men, general people in power, they all fall to his whims. His charm and his gentle nature are some of Mari’s greatest weapons. When her force isn’t enough to get movement, his gentleness can grease the wheels. They’ve been in love their entire lives, and he has always known his role is as her other half. Where she is cool collected and nearly stony, he is emotional and loving. Both of them are smart as a whip and completely dedicated to one another. The only time Hero can be moved to violence is a direct threat against Mari. When that happens...there’s no where you could hide. 

Sunny and Kel are her Capos. Neither of them is the direct underboss because she hasn’t fully decided which one of them will succeed her. They want to be dual rulers, but Mari thinks that’s a bad idea and could create factions. It’s one of the only things she and Hero disagree on, but Mari won’t let her personal affections for Kel cloud her judgement. The only reason Sunny isn’t fully her heir is he won’t accept it without Kel. Sunny tends to handle Mari’s side of things in the underworld while Kel handles the above ground things with Hero. Mari and Hero are subtly grooming Kel and Sunny to take their specific roles, but Sunny and Kel want to split the responsibilities even and rule as dual Dons. Kel has a bit of an inferiority complex because of this, but regardless he is loyal to Sunny. If Sunny becomes the Don, then Kel will accept his place as consigliere and protector with grace. He’s already accepted this as the inevitable conclusion. 

Aubrey is an assassin that Mari has in her pocket. Aubrey started as a freelancer, but Mari and Hero coaxed her in by making her family. She carries their name, and she Kel and Sunny are siblings in all but blood. Even then they took an oath blood when Sunny and Kel officially became Capos. She is deathly dedicated to Mari and would do anything she asked without hesitation. She has skills in almost every type of weaponry, but when she is allowed to make a mess she prefers to use her nailed bat. Her wife Kim is a hacker that she brought into the organization, and with Kim came the hooligans who are good soldiers if not particularly skilled. Kim is a valuable addition as well though. 

Basil is an actual mob wife. He is not involved directly in anything the organization does, and he’s fine with keeping it that way. He met Sunny when Sunny was on a job helping to kill his father when he was 16. Mari had ordered that the entire family was taken care of, but Sunny had decided to bring back Basil and his grandmother. Quickly from there they fell into a relationship, and Basil tolerates Sunny’s work and loves the rest of the group like family, but he isn’t involved and he doesn’t want to be. The only time he ever touched a gun was when someone tried to kill Sunny and uh...yeah he doesn’t like talking about it. He’s closest with Aubrey who also lingers on that line of outsider. 

The hooligans are foot soldiers...I love this AU so much people I’ve sold my soul Mob Boss Mari is too powerful. Don Mari.....secretly smart and consigliere mob wife Hero.....dual Capos Sunny and Kel....actual mob wife Basil.....Assassin Aubrey. I wanna talk about this so much more omg omg omg.
