Funny from Funny Pets Lore yayyy
Funny means "hilarious," "interesting," or "strange". Of course, it is not her real name. She is the sixth Funny to take on the stage name Funny Prism.
150 years ago, as urbanization progressed in the Southern Hemisphere due to the Gold Rush, influential politicians and royalty from various countries created mysterious entertainment districts where cats were worshipped as gods. The name of the district was "Cat God," and while alcohol, prostitution, and gambling were all legal there, it had its own judicial powers where bad public manners such as littering cigarettes were severely punished. At the time, French poet Charles Pierre Baudelaire described this entertainment district as "gathering together the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere."
Its glamour surpassed that of modern-day Las Vegas. The first Funny Prism emerged as the city's star. A skilled dancer, she entertained audiences with dances from around the world, including the waltz, tango, rumba, tap, and even Japanese dance and Cossack dancing. However, after only five years of topping the showgirl charts, she mysteriously disappeared. There are rumors that she either grabbed a number of balloons and disappeared into the sky, or that she caught the eye of royalty and was kidnapped.
There were rumors that she had been killed, but the truth remains a mystery. For 150 years, the top dancers in this town were Funny Prism. The name was given to those who inherited the name, and the life of the person who inherited the name was entirely covered by taxes. It could be said that the entire town protects them so that they do not disappear. Funny, who appears in the main story, was chosen as the sixth generation, and as a privilege, she was able to live in a remote area on the outskirts of town.
Since she is always surrounded by various costumes, she wanders around the house in her underwear. There is a reason why not many people know about this town called Nekogamisama. This town declared itself an independent nation as the "God of Cat Republic" in 1978, but the United Nations does not recognize the God of Cat Republic as a country, like the Principality of Hat River Province in Australia and the Principality of Sealand in the UK. However, a pass is now required to enter this town, and it is no longer a red-light district that anyone can easily enter. Now, you cannot play in this town unless you obtain a special passport. At the same time, the name Funny Prism remains in the world of only a few people know about.

Transformers Earthspark is doing something new when it comes to starting off a story.
I've been seeing some complaints that the Earthspark series, while sticking to established lore and characterisation, they are not showing anything. The biggest complaint is about Starscream's ark in episode 21, where Starscream's fear of Megatron is simply alluded to, once in a short exchange between Optimus Prime and Megatron, and when Hashtag confronts Starscream about it.
The thing is, Earthspark doesn't need to say anything. It's already there. The only thing that's in the way is that it is not in the Earthspark series.
Back in 2005-2006, where the news of a new Transformers movie in the works was about to happen, but now it was life action! Despite my ignorance of the franchise, I could name most of the characters. I knew that the blue blocky guy was Soundwave, I recognized Optimus Prime, Megatron and Starscream by sight, I knew that Starscream was a treacherous idiot.
I have no idea where that knowledge came from. I never consumed any other Transformers media, my brother had a total of four transformers, tiny microchangers none of which are any common guys, and we didn't know the names of, it was just a car that if standing up and pushing the hood over, it was a guy now. I have to reiterate, I have no idea how I came by that knowledge. Was it somehow absorbed through the various websites and media I saw online? I still remember having to download actual .avi files in order to watch videos from the internet, and with a limited connection anything I did online had to be measured carefully, so I had to tread on known grounds since it was highly risky seeing anything unknown because it took time and bandwidth away from the internet.
But still I knew it. And then Transformers Animated was released, where the opening scene even referenced the cartoon that came out before I was born, and then zoomed out to show that this new cartoon would be far different than its predecessor, even introducing a new main character while heavily rewamping an old one. That's where I started really consuming Transformers media, but still with the knowledge from unknown sources that it was drawing from a history older than I was.
And that is what Earthspark is relying on. It is using the fact that Transformers has become a very recognized brand where the knowledge of it passes easily. You don't need to watch any Transformers media to somehow know, that Starscream is a bumbling fool that tries to take over the Decepticons. And even if there is some unknown, the series makes it very clear that you can learn more about the Transformers, just read the comics! Or watch the old cartoon! I as a european can watch The G1 cartoon, Beast Wars and TFP for free on the official transformers channel on youtube even.
And that's how they rope you in. Earthspark is doing something new in how to reach audience, alluding to the bigger picture that's already there, waiting to be bought and consumed, while the older generation can enjoy a new storyline and little easter eggs without having to go through all the slog of reintroducing every single character that they already know.

Musics... what songs you like... I need... recs..
YAY YAY YAY YAY OKAY THIS MAY BE LONG
Steam Powered Giraffe . they're a robot band with a ton of lore but you dont have to know any of it to enjoy the music !!! if you wanna get into the lore i suggest listening to the albums in release order , but if not just shuffling em is good !! even if you decide to get into the lore later you can still just shuffle for now , the songs dont really spoil anything , theyre mostly connected to the robot's feelings and not events . except Vice Quadrant . if you wanna get into the lore i suggest leaving The Vice Quadrant alone until you listen in album release order . all of the lore is on the website below in the lore and comic tabs ! ^_^
Kabaret Sybarit . theyre a danish dark cabaret band with two narrative universes . the first narrative is in The Poodle and The Grand Finale , huge trigger warning for rape and sexual topics in these two . the second narrative is Akt 1: Rum Nr. 13 , the whole thing is in danish but google translate works fine for the lyrics . Akt 1 was unfortunately only act one of a story that was supposed to be longer , but the band separated and they never finished it . what it is is still really good though ! heres the music video for the first song in The Poodle:
youtube
Paul Shapera ! he has a few narratives over all his albums , but the only one ive listened to personally is New Albion . the New Albion trilogy is: The Dolls of New Albion, New Albion Radio Hour, and The New Albion Guide to Analogue Consciousness. there's also The Room Beneath New Albion but its not as long and not necessary to understand the main story . theres also more New Albion past those four but i havent gotten into anything outside the 4 . content warning for incest in act 3 for Dolls of New Albion (its not really explicit ever but the main character of act 3 expresses romantic love for his grandfather) . bandcamp link for the first one in the trilogy !
Will Wood and The Tapeworms ! ive only listened to Everything Is Alot , but its really good ! some songs i really like from it are White Knuckle Jerk (Where Do You Get Off), 6up 5oh Cop-Out (Pro / Con), and Front Street !
Shayfer James !!! i recommend Counterfeit Arcade, it has definitely some of my favorite songs ever in it (like Weight of the World and Diggin Up Hatchets) ! and Room by Room !
Sarah And The Safe Word ! im more of a casual fan of them , but some of my favorite songs by them are Sick on Seventh Street, Formula 666, Old Lace, Bottom of a Bender, and Red Hot & Holy !
The Cog Is Dead ! theyre a steampunk band with some lore but its decently less than Steam Powered Giraffe . most of their songs are one off stories with no connect to a greater plot . you can go whatever order for them but i do suggest listening to the albums and not just shuffling them ! website:
Scene Queen ! i suggest just shuffling her it doesnt really matter how you listen to her music . warning majority of her music is very sexual though
Set It Off ! they have so many different styles of music across their albums , i suggest listening to the albums in full for the full experience but it doesnt really matter , they dont have a narrative . except for Elsewhere . for Elsewhere , i suggest exploring the website if you wanna figure out the lore ! its really cool and visually interesting .
The Mechanisms ! they have a ton of lore , most of which is in their albums . for them you kinda have to listen to the albums in full you cant really shuffle . unless you dont care about the lore then do whatever ! you can listen in whatever order , but i STRONGLY suggest leaving Death To The Mechanisms for last . i started with that and i basically fucked up my whole experience :pensive:

Several people have been asking this, actually, so I'll do a quick recap as well!
SO! I'll give a big ol' recap.
Let me grab my chart (pictured here)
Will recap as much as I can below spoiler (for people who wanna actually do the ARG)!
Note: Participation in the ARG is, as was mentioned, 18+.
There are three potential entry points for the ARG.
The first is an ad on the Rusty Quill/Magnus Protocol feed! The second is a series of billboards, the locations of which we discovered roughly a day before Alex J Newall posted about them on Twitter. The last is @strangehauntsuk, a blog on our own hellsite! They were discovered in that order.
The audio ad basically told us to email the Office of Incident Assessment and Response's HR department for a job application. Doing so yields an autoresponse which leads to the OIAR's website!
From there, things blow up CONSIDERABLY.
Depending on what you put in the object line of emails you send to the OIAR emails, you can get different responses, some of which have Cryptic German with the alchemic symbol for cobalt/alkali (đ¶). The symbols are important. The German roughly translates to "Don't let [no pronoun here, could be it, or them, or...] through. It's important that we stay in control."
From the emails, we located a Youtube channel, plus a new page on the website!
So. The website. Okay. There's a LOT here. First off, we have a form that we, as of 22-09-2023, have yet to fill without resulting in a "this thing is broken" page. Oops! It's called a fr3-d1 form.
The general page indicate a fun timeline, including Other Companies the OIAR has worked with or is working with! Woo!
The careers page indicate two already filled positions (could be our protagonists, or could be some ARG characters! One of them is an IT person, whom we THINK is an ARG character, who may also be a TMagP character, we'll get back to that).
The Jobs Posting page (aka new page) is where it gets Funky. There's an alchemic symbol for air (đ) at the end, plus a bunch of typos! The typos were one of two ways to get to a phone number. The other way was using some metadata on the images on the site.
Thus, we get to something new! A phone number! WOO! We call, and, lo and behold, ARG stuff. Robot voice. The robot voice tells us the phone will be repaired by September 22nd. (We broke the ARG at this point and ended up calling RQ staff. This is known as the Asterisk Incident. Please don't call RQ staff.)
We'll get back to the phone later.
Now, you'll recall I mentioned a Youtube channel. Of course, the only public video on there has something on it! If you look at the bottom right corner, you'll see two things. One, around 16s, a Mercury (âż) symbol will flash. We'll get back to that.
More notably, near the end of the video, there's a bunch of numbers, which are the IP address of a Newsgroup/UseNet server! Using something like Thunderbird allows you to connect to it and read about 70k words of Germain emails/forum posts. Woo!
Okay. Newsgroup lore. The group is a bunch of defectors from the DDR (or GDR, German Democratic Republic, aka East Germany), and was officially active from 1994 to 2002, though there are posts up to 2006 (even though the forum was "closed". Sus.)
We get a WHOLE CAST of characters here. I'll keep it simple and only mention SandmannS, the forum mod, Einsamernarr, a Not Very Good (he is Problematic in so many ways) conspiracy theorist, and N20 (or N2O or NO2... dude* can't type fr).
Sandmann is... trying to keep the People on-topic, and gets very ban-happy around 1999 (aka the time the Institute burned down, according to the TMagP info we have). Some of their "updates" on the forum are... suspicious, to say the least.
Oh! There's a cat picture thread. They post cats and trees and books in there. Einsamernarr posted recipe books with a symbol for Platinum, with a date encoded in it (September 30th). This will be important.
Now, things get fun once you look at the HTML in the email we get from the OIAR HR department: we get Eins' login info, which leads to a "members only" thread!
There, we get two bits of lore (and about 10k more words). One, Eins totally stumbled on something highly suspicious, got so scared they called off on an in-person meet between other UseNet members and went "if you don't hear about me in a week assume I'm dead" (not at verbatim but same vibes). That was the last message they ever posted on the group.
About a week later, another member (CheckpointCharlotte, a reference to Checkpoint Charlie) posted a string of numbers (asking what they mean) which led us to an email address, a website, and a locked folder (dokumente.7z) which we've yet to unlock. The symbol for oxygen (cross with a circle) was there too.
At this point we were sort of at a loss. We had a date, a locked folder, a locked website username/password (which we'd gotten through brute force, so we didn't know what clues tied to it YET), and we were just playing around.
Someone discovered freddie@[the OIAR email thing] was a valid email, and, about a day later, we got something ~new~ from a noreply@ email. The logo on it was glitchy, and had coordinates, as well as morse code for 1000Hz. The coordinates led us to, lo and behold, BILLBOARDS! WOO!
So. Billboards. Scanning the QR code led us to the locked page (urclna.[website extension]). But now, we had context! A mercury symbol appeared before the locked page! WOO!
But wait, you'll say, the mercury symbol was in the Youtube video. You didn't mention finding anything there. And, you're right! We didn't! So we started digging!
I isolated the 1000Hz frequency in the video and... it started getting weird around 16s. Like, it was louder, suddenly, and had very VERY vague pulses. I thought it was probably morse code. However, we didn't really manage to grab anything from it (Youtube compression beloathed). (We tried, we really did. I spent like 8 hours on that sound file. I can hear the beeps in my sleep.)
After a while with nothing happening (except for waiting for the phone lines to be fixed), a New Reddit Account went "OH HEY LOOK AT THIS TUMBLR PAGE IT'S WEIRD ISN'T IT". We think this was a RQ plant (hi RQ) or a troll.
Turns out: not a troll! WOO!
So. We got a few things from the Tumblr.
One: more Magnus Institute lore! Go check it out. (Also, the đ° day/night symbol). Two: the bottom left corners of the images, when assembled, gave us coordinates. We didn't have a time yet, though. Three: the banner image had morse code it in, along with the Mercury symbol. We think this was a backup in case we failed to get anything from the video.
Four: the only post with any links in it is the Bonzoland post, leading to... you guessed it, Bonzo. We'll get back to that.
Morse code! Woo! Decoding it let us into code-urclna, or Colins Code Collection. Within, we got some cryptic MAG065-esque "my mind is all corners" stuff, which is nice, I guess, and decoded the message "do not trust 8 9", which we don't know how to use yet. Woo? Also a lot of stuff was encoded using alchemy symbols as a 1:1 alphabet replacement cipher, so that was fun.
Oh, and N20 - uh I mean NO2 (????) posted Once (1) in Colin's code repo. So uh. That's a link with the DDR forums I guess????
We're still working on the code collection.
Back to your favourite Bonzo. The page is... it sure is. Early 2000s web design meets 1990s aesthetic. It's magnificent. The email address on the site has been deactivated, alas. We haven't managed to find anything there. The one thing we did find is an error image with a filename that goes something like 3:00;3:00;3:00. We checked the site at 3am and! CREEPY BONZO IMAGE! WOO!
There's also a sound file playing. It reveals a time! We believe the time to be linked to the coordinates on the Tumblr account, since both use the day/night symbol.
Back to the phones. They got fixed! We called! Got a bunch of numbers! And then the word PLATINUM. The numbers were a place (in Berlin), which we'll be visiting when the time comes.
I think I've got everything. Anyway. ARG.
BONZO BONZO BONZO
"How is the ARG going?" they ask, little knowing the Statement Remains has formed a cult around one Bonzo. There is fanart. There are fanfics. People are shipping Bonzo and the personified Tumblr Sexyman version of an asterisk.
I have joined their ranks. I have made cursed Bonzo art. (Based on the cursed 3:00am flickering image on the Bonzo.Land website.)
Art after the cut (it's creepy, hence- cut)
Behold.

Mike Wheeler, the Hand and Eye of Vecna, and D&D as Foreshadowing
I'm about to say something unhinged.
It's going to take a fair amount of words to unpack (sorry about that) because I need to give context before I just come out and say it. And I'm fully aware that it's just one of hundreds of possible options for s5, so I'm really not trying to convince anybody of anything just... I was thinking about foreshadowing and analogies again, and something occurred to me and then it snowballed and.... hm.
Okay, so, I talked about it a lot more in this post, but the key point for what I'm talking about here is my belief that the Party's first D&D game in s1 actually foreshadows all of the main Upside Down antagonists from seasons 1-4, with the D&D Demogorgon actually representing Henry. Essentially, my breakdown came down to this:
"Something is coming. Something hungry for blood." -> s1 -> the Demogorgon. "A shadow grows on the wall behind you, swallowing you in darkness." -> s2 -> the shadow monster. "An army of troglodytes charge into the chamber!" -> s3 -> the Mind Flayer and the Flayed. "The Demogorgon!" -> s4 -> Henry Creel.
So, the remaining unaccounted for villains (assuming that the way the characters use D&D enemies as analogies is not necessarily representative of/accurate to what they actually foreshadow within the narrative) are:
Mike's Thessalhydra
Will's Juju hoard
Eddie's Vecna
I have some speculation on the first two, but it's the third that I'm going to do a deep dive into my thoughts on.
Since this is pretty long and it takes a bit of time to get through the contextualizing, let me clarify up front that this ties into the "Mike has a connection to the Upside Down" theories which I love, but which I know are not to everyone's tastes.
Who IS Vecna (in Stranger Things)?
From the campaign in s4e1, we learn:
Vecna is hiding in plain sight among his own cultists
"His skin is shrivelled. Desiccated. And [...] he is not only missing his left arm, but his left eye"
Vecna was believed to be dead/killed by Kas
An 11 isn't enough to defeat him, but a 20 is (notably, we don't actually hear what Dustin and Erica were trying to roll to do-- based on the context of the scene, we assume that it was combat-based, but it is not explicitly laid out)
Later, in s4e2, Vecna is described (in terms that the characters start to tie to the entity we later learn is Henry, in an effort to theorize about what's going on) as:
An undead creature of great power
A spellcaster
A dark wizard
Note: In the context of Eddie's description of what happened to Chrissy, the term "Vecna's curse" is brought up. This leads into the description of Vecna's characteristics listed above, but no further details (as far as I can find or remember) are given about what Vecna's curse is like in Eddie's game. Which leads me to...
Who IS Vecna (in D&D)?
Alright, I have to admit-- I've played D&D before, but my friends have a tendency to prefer MotW/PbtA-based games, and even when we HAVE done D&D, the storylines and characters have been entirely from the DM's mind/not from anything official. As a result, everything I'm about to say here is based on what Google can tell me (I'm aware others have talked about this before, but I think it gives some useful context for where I'm going to go in this analysis, if I make sure weâre all on the same page about the background D&D lore).
The main websites that I used to get information for this part can be found here, here, and here.
So! The long and short of it seems to be that in life, Vecna was a wizard who built a "terrible empire". In order to avoid death, he turned himself into a lich, and in undeath, he continued to grow his empire. He had a lieutenant named Kas, who Vecna gifted a sword to. For unknown (though the speculation does not paint him in a positive light) reasons, Kas murdered Vecna, leaving behind only Vecna's eye and left hand along with a pile of ash. However, his spirit survived the attack and he spent "eons" regaining his former power. In the meantime, his artifacts, cults, and "dark secrets" continued corrupting others/pushing them towards evil.
It may also be notable that Vecna was known to have a "formidable and hideous" temper.
And... that's the short version of everything that I could find about Vecna in D&D.
Henry Creel as Vecna
So, this is the obvious conclusion, because the characters call Henry "Vecna", which seems to have largely lead to the audience assumption that the Vecna in Eddie's campaign definitely foreshadows Henry. And I want to start out by acknowledging that I do think this is absolutely a possibility! I could 100% be wrong about the Demogorgon in Mike's campaign representing Henry, and even if I'm not, there's nothing that says there can't be two moments of foreshadowing for the same antagonist.
If Henry is Vecna, I know there are a lot of theories about who Kas is, and I'm not interested in getting too deep into the weeds on that particular debate. With that being said, I will say that when I first watched s4 I personally thought it was obvious that, if Henry was actually the person foreshadowed by Eddie's Vecna, then El was clearly Kas and had already fulfilled her part in that role?
I mean, Henry didn't have any real power in the lab so obviously El wasn't his lieutenant. But she was clearly his favourite (or, depending on how you read his character, he at least did a good job of pretending that she was his favourite). He gave her a weapon (in that he taught her to use her anger to weaponize her powers). At first she helped him with things (ie. getting Soteria out of his neck), but later she turned against him and used the "weapon" he "gave" her in order to, as far as she understood at the time, kill him (literally turned him to ash, and he appears when we see him next in the Upside Down). But, of course, he wasn't actually dead, and in line with Eddie's campaign, he came back. El tried to face him alone, but it failed/missed just like the eleven roll.
You may or may not agree with me on that, but I personally think it's the most likely scenario. I just... can't see them recreating everyone thinking Henry has been killed for a THIRD time only to bring him back AGAIN. And in my opinion, El-as-Kas (but she's already fulfilled the role) does fit very well with what we know about Vecna from Eddie's campaign/with a number of the details from D&D.
I will also concede that you could make the case that Henry was hiding in plain sight among his cultists during the time when he was interacting with baby!El (as in, he was disguised as a lab assistant, and obviously the whole Lab is dedicated to, essentially, recreating Henry's powers so that's sort of like a cult to him, I suppose), and that he is certainly, as of the present timeline in s4, something like an undead creature as well was being very powerful and functionally a dark wizard. His flesh is even shrivelled and desiccated after his time in the Upside Down.
All of which is to say, without speculating heavily about the potential events of s5, Henry does look incredibly appealing as the thing foreshadowed by Eddie's campaign.
ButâŠ
The Case for Someone Else as Vecna
There are a few main reasons why I think that Henry is a red herring as the thing Vecna was foreshadowing.
Firstly, and least compellingly (I have to mention it, but it's not evidence that stands on its own), if Mike's Demogorgon foreshadows Henry, but the Party mis-used its name for the UD's Demogorgon because it was the monster they happened to be fighting at the time, then it stands to reason that it's possible that they may have mis-used Vecna's name to apply it to Henry for the same reason-- it was the most recent/most superficially relevant enemy the Party had fought in D&D and, as such, made for a decent enough analogy to the current situation.
Secondly, just on a narrative scale, if El has already played the Kas role in the s4 flashbacks and then has also already made her failed roll in present day s4... then literally all that's left is to roll a 20 and win? It's too smooth/too easy to take up a whole season. Obviously, the writers can throw in extra drama and struggle and tension, but if we're already past the failed 11 roll, then... it can't be too intense or else the foreshadowing loses its tight 1:1 dynamic with what's happening in the plot. And ânot too intenseâ is very rarely what people are going for when they write a finale season.
Thirdly... despite how well Henry aligns with almost all of the descriptions of Eddie's Vecna, he does not align with what I would argue are the two most emphasized descriptors (the two that Eddie puts the most passion and physicality into describing, and the two which seem to actually make it clear to the Club that the unknown cultist is Vecna). Namely: Henry very much is not missing an eye or an arm. His left arm is odd looking, but that's not because he ever lost it and had to replace it. It appears to just be part of whatever the Upside down is doing to him/turning him into (God, I hope he's turning into a Demogorgon-- I saw someone suggest that at one point and I wish I could find the post to link it here, because I think it would be the funniest and most fitting option). And Henry's eyes both look kind of odd/cloudy now, but not only does he have both of them, but the flashback to him wandering the Upside Down after El threw him in there make it explicitly clear that his injured/initially damaged eye was his right eye. It would have been just as easy, and changed nothing about the overall narrative, if they had made Henryâs left eye blind instead/to subtly align with the Vecna analogy, so the fact that they so pointedly didnât suggests to me that, in terms of foreshadowing, Henry may not actually be Vecna at all. In fact, there is nothing at all that I can remember connecting Henry to the idea of left eyes, except that the characters call him Vecna, and Eddie's Vecna is described as being devoid of one.
Also (and this is just a small point), I do think that it's interesting that in D&D, Vecna's backstory includes him creating a dark empire, and there are a lot of theories abounding about the idea that someone in the main cast created or significantly altered the Upside Down (I've mostly seen them about Will and Mike, but I imagine there are other similar theories for other characters). Because what we know for sure is that Henry absolutely did not create it, and likely did not significantly alter it either (at least not until he met the shadow monster), I do think that it's worth noting that this is another way in which Henry's character diverges from at least the D&D version of Vecna.
Detour: How do Superpowers Work in Stranger Things?
I may or may not have driven myself mad trying to figure this out. And I also may or may not have spent a long time resigned to the idea that Kali had been retconned by s4 showing that all the other numbers seem to have basically the same powers as Henry and El (with the possible exception of El's ability to open portals into the UD-- unless Henry had this ability as well before the Mind Flayer took a chunk out of El in s3... we simply don't know yet).
I feel like I maybe heard something, at one point, that suggested that all of the kids in the lab had telekinesis and then also at least one other power. However, I can't find a source on that? Also, I don't believe there's any direct evidence of this shown in s4 (and Kali's powers outright contradict it), given that the only non-telekinetic power that we were shown by anybody but Henry and El was 010 who was able to see what others were doing in his mind (which seemed to be very similar to El's mind void abilities, if maybe a little stronger or more well-practised).
Either way, I think the evidence given in the show suggests that there are three possible ways to develop or obtain supernatural abilities in the Stranger Things universe.
Via experimentation. This was the case for El, and very likely also most of the other kids in the Lab. It also seems to have been the case for El's mother, who we see being able to flicker the lights and change the channels on her television with her mind.
Through infiltration by and/or extended exposure to the Upside Down. I'm a little more tentative on this one, because my main example of this is Will, and we all know that there are a LOT of theories about Will's abilities. And I want to stress that I cannot definitively say they're wrong. All I can say is that, as the show exists right now, one of many possible readings is that Will's abilities, such as sensing the Mind Flayer, seem to be a result of his experiences with the Upside Down. If this is accurate, then it represents a method of obtaining powers that is distinct from how El got hers. Iâm not at all trying to discount the possibility that Will could have other powers that he was born with or developed due to experimentation (I love a good Will-born-with-powers theory!), I just want to consider the possibility that Willâs powers could be a result of his experiences with the Upside Down.
Being born with them/developing them spontaneously. Henry is the obvious example of this, but I also believe that Kali is another example. Her powers are completely different than those of the other numbers. Moreover, Kali was abducted when she was five, unlike El who was abducted as an infant. To me, this suggests that Kali was likely not the result of Brenner's experimentation, but rather, more similar to Henry in that she spontaneously developed powers, and Brenner took advantage of that fact. If this is the case, it would explain why Kali's powers are so different from those of everybody else that we've seen-- because it is likely that Brenner used Henry Creel as the basis upon which his experiments were developed, explaining why they largely seem to have powers very similar to Henry.
If this assessment is correct (and I cannot stress enough how speculative I am being here because this is still a huge mystery in the show itself), then I do think it's interesting that Henry (who is almost certainly going to be the main/active antagonist for the vast majority of s4, even if he doesn't turn out to be "Vecna" from Eddie's campaign in the end) represents 3/3 of these points (he was experimented on by Brenner, he has been changed by the Upside Down, and he developed his powers spontaneously), and yet, out of our protagonists, only 2/3 of those points are currently represented (El who developed her powers via experimentation, and Will who likely/possibly-- I know everyone has their own strong opinions on this developed them via exposure to the Upside Down)?
In reality, I think that if my interpretation of how getting superpowers works in this universe is accurate, then it seems to me that we will very likely have a character with powers that developed naturally to complement El and Will.
However, both for narrative reasons (it would feel too shoehorned in/too Deus ex Machina) and for fitting in with the other established characters who seem to have spontaneously developed powers reasons, it would not make sense for any of our protagonists to all of a sudden start moving things with their minds. Narratively, it would just seem like it was being added in at the last minute and, anyway, it seems like Kali developed her powers/showed clear signs of them before the age of five, and Henry developed his around the age of twelve, so itâs likely that if any of our characters were going to develop powers, it would start before their teenage years.
So, assuming we're not getting Erica (God, I wish) or Holly (...I mean, I wouldn't complain) suddenly developing powers of their own, it seems likely that if any of our characters are going to have spontaneous powers, they likely already have them/are already using them. However, I don't think any of our beloved ensemble cast would know they have powers and not share that with the class. They all want to beat the Upside Down, and El and Will have already more than shown how useful superpowers are in that effort.
And... on a narrative level, let's be real. If this is the direction things are going, the reveal of these powers/abilities cannot be a joyous occasion. It has to hurt. Because if it doesn't hurt, we're back to the Deus ex Machina issue. But if it hurts-- if the reveal causes severe conflict for the character in question and with the people around them, if it breaks them down and reveals new things about them, if the reveal feels like a loss, in the moment when it comes about, rather than a win for the cast... then it might work.
For that to happen, the repressed/extant but unknown powers have to connect to the Upside Down. They have to have had a significant hand in all the pain that our characters have gone through. Possibly via either creating the Upside Down or the shadow monster, or else through some other connection. But the connection has to be there, because the reveal needs to cause fear, pain, and conflict for the characters.
Detour Cont'd: So... Who Is It?
So... if my wild speculation above is in any way accurate, I think it's worth taking a look at our established characters to see who could have done it.
So, Henry was wandering the Upside Down from 1979 onwards, El opened her first gate in that same year, so I suspect that if any of our characters did accidentally create/influence the Upside Down it likely happened starting around this time. In '79 (dangerously assuming my math is correct), Nancy (also Jonathan and Robin) would have been 11-12, and the Party would have been 7-8, making them the primary possibilities. - I think it's fair to assume that if they're doing this, it would be a major character that we've known since s1, so that discounts Robin and Max. - Additionally, given the composition of the final shot of s4, I think it's reasonable to assume that this character would be in that final shot, because they would have a significant role to play in s5. That cuts out Lucas and Dustin as well. - I'll also say that we can cut out El and Will, since their powers are (under this specific interpretation) already accounted for. - That leaves the remaining options as: Nancy, Jonathan, and Mike. - And, I mean... Mike's the one who's in the middle of that final shot, just as much as Will is. Mike's the one who always knows weird random stuff about the Upside Down and about El's powers. Mike's the one whose plans always work out. Mike's the only one who has never managed to land a punch/at least not managed to land a punch in the A plot of a season climax. Mike's the one whose emotions are a total mystery to the audience (outside of those who engage in intense rewatching and analysis to pick it apart lol). And⊠Mikeâs the one whoâs always depicted in a trio with El and Will (I know this is love triangle imagery, but it could potentially have a double meaning). - My point being-- if all of my previous reasoning/interpreting is accurate, then Mike is the only character who makes any sense in this role.
Also, just talking about logistics here-- in order to be comprehensible to audience members who are not about to sit down and rewatch the show a million times in order to pick up on subtle clues and hints, there are a few issues that are going to require a decent amount of screen time in order to explain/develop in s5. To my mind, (outside of ship dynamics) those are:
Where is Max? Why can't El find her?
What is Will's connection to the Upside Down? Did the Demogorgon really take Will in s1? Why is Henry/the Mind Flayer so focused on him?
Why is the Upside Down stuck in time/why and how did it start looking like Hawkins?
What the hell is going on in Mike Wheeler's head?
How will everybody react to the Upside Down and its monsters now that they're bound to start becoming common knowledge around Hawkins?
How are they going to deal with the military? What is going to happen to El if her location is compromised? How will this impact the fight against Henry/the Upside Down?
What is the relationship between Henry and the shadow monster/Mind Flayer? Is it possible for the gang to kill/destroy/incapacitate both? How will they do that?
My point is, there's one question on this list that doesn't seem to be connected into the Upside Down plot in any way-- and that's point 4. The question about Mike. Because realistically speaking, Stranger Things has a Mike Wheeler-shaped problem. He's a protagonist every season, and he's literally equally sharing the centre of the screen with Will in the final shot of s4, so if we're getting a Will Byers protagonist moment in s5, I think it's safe to suggest that we're also getting a Mike Wheeler protagonist moment.
But generally speaking, people don't want a Mike Wheeler protagonist moment, because people don't like him. And obviously that's because the underlying issues that he's going through have been hidden from plain view, but, like... you don't do that for no reason. Narratively speaking, you only do that if you're amping up for a big reveal.
And, yes. Mike and Will getting together would absolutely be a massive reveal and I can fully understand why they wouldn't want to spoil it... but. To get people to care about Mike again, and to believe that he "deserves" Will, they need to devote time and narrative space to explaining Mike's emotional state, both regarding his sexuality, and regarding whatever mental health issues he's struggling with. And they could have put more of this in s4! Mike and Will had FOUR heart to hearts, discounting the van scene. They very much could have had Mike express some of his (likely) experiences with depression and/or PTSD, without having to show their hand about his sexuality/feelings for Will. Doing so would have helped the audience have more sympathy for/understanding of Mike, AND would have significantly cut down on the ground they have to cover with his character in s5.
Because... they're going to need to take up a fair amount of time in s5 to show all of the stuff they need to cover with Mike if they actually are intending to follow through with him being queer and also, like, not beloathed by a large swath of the audience, they're going to need to connect his emotional issues to the Upside Down/A plot somehow. Which they can absolutely do! Henry's whole thing is perfect for that. And it worked with Max-- but there's a difference.
Because, with Max, her experiences with Henry/Vecna's curse were used to give the audience new information to help solve the mystery of the season. But we don't need that again. And... sure, Mike could get cursed/attacked and learn something useful in the fight against Henry, in addition to showcasing all the stuff that's going on inside his head, but given that Will's back in town and is already psychically linked with Henry/the Mind Flayer... I mean, it seems more natural to have that dynamic fall to Will?
This is a lot of talking, but my POINT is... they did not have to hold Mike's emotional state so close to their chests. Let's be real-- they could have at least started to outline the idea that Mike might be struggling with mental health issues, and nobody who isn't already reading the writing on the wall for Mike/Will would be jumping to assume it meant he was struggling with any gay feelings. Like, let's be absolutely real here: they could have had Mike outright say "I don't know, it's like you left and all of a sudden I didn't have the energy to do anything all I could do was sit around and miss you" to Will and people would have understood it as "ohhhh he was depressed because he missed El/has trauma about El disappearing on him/leaving him".
So, if we're reading Mike correctly-- if he's struggling with mental health issues and they're putting in all the little clues and hints to it that we're picking up on/that will be obvious on a rewatch after some huge reveal... then whatever he's going through has to tie into the supernatural plot in a big way. And, more than that, it needs to be linked to it in a way that is surprising enough/enough of a twist to warrant all this secrecy about it.
AND (and this is a hill I am prepared to die on)... Will and El are both main characters, but so is Mike. The plot would not have started without Will. The plot would not have started without El. But also... the plot would not have started without Mike. Without Mike things are totally different, because whoever found El instead would not have been the exact combination of nurturing and feral that made s1 Mike hide her in his basement/believe her the instant she implied she even maybe knew how to find Will. And that's just the first thing that he did which unquestionably pushed the plot in the direction it's going. There's a reason he shares centre screen with Will at the end of s4 (after El had her extended closeup because I'm sure she's going to continue having her protagonist moment in s5, AS SHE SHOULD). Mike isn't just a love interest. He's a protagonist in his own right-- this is his coming of age story, just as much as it is Will's and El's. And, while it's entirely possible that they might have a plan that includes him being the only one of the trio without any particular personal connection to the supernatural plot, I do think it's worth considering that, just as is the case for Will and El, it's at least possible that Mike might have a plotline outside of his romantic relationships, and that, as the third protagonist/third leg of the protagonist trio... it's at least possible that said plotline might have direct ties to the supernatural A plot.
(Also, yes, the ending shot does also suggest that Hop, Joyce, Nancy, and Jonathan are also protagonists for s5-- I feel like this tracks with their roles in s1, and I fully expect them to play major roles in s5, but if this is actually a coming of age story, then it's the Party who are, really, the ones spending this whole time coming of age. That's why I'm making the distinction.)
I bring all of this up, because I believe that it lends context to why I think it is possible that Eddie's Vecna actually references/foreshadows Mike, in particular's, s5 role.
Mike as Vecna
So, here's the thing. If Mike did create the Upside Down, or at least the shadow monster, then he (or at least his repressed emotions and/or dark thoughts) is an antagonistic force in the show. That doesn't mean he's bad or evil (Will was an antagonistic force in s2, and he's sort of the exact opposite of bad or evil). Meaning that it would make sense to foreshadow him as an antagonist, even if ultimately he is a protagonist/on the side of the rest of the gang.
Returning to what we know about Vecna from the show, I'd like to combine it with some of the common theories/ideas that I've seen floating around regarding Mike's potential plot/future in s5.
First of all, Eddie's Vecna is shown hiding among the cultists. Mike obviously doesn't have a cult, although, if he is (unintentionally) the cause of all the Upside Down business, he is hiding in plain sight, both to the other characters and to the audience.
^ Bringing back this screenshot for absolutely no reason at all
I would also point out that Mike is the only character, of the viable list (even expanded back out to include Will and El) of those who could even maybe have played the role in creating/influencing the Upside Down, who is also a member of the Hellfire Club. By which I mean, Mike might not actually be in a cult, but Hawkins at large sure thinks he is.
Now, obviously, Mike isn't dead/hasn't been killed by anybody. But everybody is always talking about all of he death flags around Mike coming into s5, and I, at least, am of the opinion that he can't die permanently (for the same reason that Will and El can't perma-die-- all of them are way too self-sacrificial and willing to throw their lives away for everyone else, so killing them would literally just be them... doing what they always do, which is not ideal for a death scene, especially in a show where the death of major characters is used as infrequently as it is in Stranger Things). If he dies and then comes back to life, or at least seems to have died, this might fulfill the "undead" requirement.
Obviously, how the issue of Kas would come up in this storyline, would be much more questionable than in Henry's. If I'm on the right track here, though, I wouldn't really expect us to know at this point, because it would likely come up in s5 anyway. What I will say is that, if I were to speculate about s5... since Mike is the leader of the Party, and Kas was Vecna's lieutenant, if this is the direction they're going, then I would expect one of the Party members (probably not Will or El because I have some... thoughts about them in the context of the Vecna analogy) to play the role. However, I really can't see any of them intentionally killing/betraying Mike, so my best guess is that if this is happening, it's going to be more a thing of Mike self-sacrificing/endangering himself in order to protect one of the Party members, rather than them intentionally/personally striking the blow. That's SUPER speculative, though, and not founded in very much except... Mike's character as a whole. Also, in D&D's lore, all that was left of Vecna after Kas had killed him, besides the Hand and the Eye, was a pile of ashes-- which fits really seamlessly into Mike's narration of his D&D character dying a fiery, self-sacrificial death at the end of Will's campaign.
Eddie's Vecna is a spellcaster/dark wizard, which are terms that would fit anyone, Mike included, in the scenario where they created/significantly influenced the Upside Down/shadow monster.
In terms of Mike's appearance, obviously he does not appear shrivelled and desiccated (though we'll have to see what s5 brings on that front), but I will note that there are a LOT of theories about Mike losing an arm and possibly an eye as well. Additionally, Mike's left eye, in particular, is often shrouded in shadow. I've already written a different post about that, so I won't go too into detail, but you can look at it here.
^ A sample of some of the left eye shadows
If the theories about Mike creating the Upside Down or at least the shadow monster are accurate, then that fulfills the D&D Vecna's backstory of having built a dark empire before his undeath.
In the context of Mike, I also think it's interesting that one of the things D&D's Vecna is known for is his "dark secrets". Like... I mean, we all know Mike is full of secrets. And it's very likely that they're "dark"-- not necessarily in the way that D&D Vecna's secrets are dark, but more so in the way of, like, mental health issues can be very dark when you're living through them. I mean... Max had "dark secrets" this season, too (though, obviously, totally different in nature and context than Mike's), but the narrative difference (outside of all the cool character stuff they were doing with Max-- this is not a Max post so I won't get too into it, but I just want to make it super clear that Max has a LOT of interesting stuff going on in s4 in her own right) is that those came to light, while Mike's stayed hidden.
Also... okay let me just put this here:
(Link to the site I got that from is in the Vecna in D&D section)
"The godlike supremacy they crave". Does that... not sound like Henry? I mentioned Henry turning into a Demogorgon back in the Henry as Vecna section of this post, but... I think I'm just saying that it could legitimately be happening? I don't know. Maybe I'm just being overly enticed by the idea of Henry's hubris making him believe that he's the one in control of the Upside Down/the shadow monster/Mind Flayer when, in reality, the truth is that he's simply blinded to what's happening to him by his own arrogance and ambition.
Anyway... finally, I'll point out that D&D's Vecna is also known for his "formidable temper". And, like... I just... okay, so a lot of characters in Stranger Things have tempers and anger issues. But the thing with Mike's is that it's portrayed... kind of differently? Like, if you push Jonathan or Steve hard enough on the right pressure points, they'll snap and physically fight you (we've seen it), and El's basically the same except that she generally has the psychic force to skip the fight and simply toss you aside like a ragdoll. If you push Will or Nancy or Hopper hard enough on the right pressure points, they'll get sarcastic and frustrated and snippy (and depending on who you are, Hopper and maybe also Nancy might also punch you lbr-- here's hoping for Nancy punching someone out in s5). But Mike?
a) Mike's kind of constantly on the verge of getting mad (except, typically, when he's alone with Will and usually also El pre-s4). He's annoyed by everything, prickly towards basically everyone unless he knows them very well, and easily upset if he doesn't get his way/doesn't feel consulted about what's happening. None of which erases his positive qualities, and all of which are explainable, but it's undeniable that there's an angry element to his character.
b) When Mike does actually get properly mad, he shoots to kill. "What is WRONG with you?" "It's not MY fault you don't like girls!" "She didn't LOOK fine...", like. Every season, he says something so harsh it leaves the other person/people speechless. And that's NOT to say that Mike's a bad kid. He's a child who has suffered a lot of trauma, and who was already prone to fits of annoyance before all the bad stuff started happening. Of course he lashes out. AND it does seem like he's making an attempt to improve especially as of s4 (probably because the rain fight really scared him tbh). I'm not saying he's bad, I'm just saying that one of his flaws, which he does seem to be working on, is that he has a tendency to get angry and say things that he might mean in the moment, but which are more hurtful than he wants them to be.
c) I find the scene where Mike breaks down in Hopper's arms in s2 incredibly telling. Obviously, this was Mike under extreme circumstances. I'm not suggesting that level of rage and pain is Mike's typical baseline level. But what I am saying is... that breakdown did not develop overnight. That was something Mike was building towards since s1e1. And then he lets it out with fists and screams and sobs. And then he boxes it away and gets back to plotting how to stop the Mind Flayer and save Will like nothing happened. And nobody brings it up ever again (I mean... let's be honest... the only person who WOULD 100% have brought it up later was passed out in a drug-induced nap at the time, so it's very likely that Will doesn't know about that breakdown... just like he probably doesn't know about the quarry). And just like every other character, Mike keeps getting traumatized on top of all the pain that caused that original breakdown. And...
I don't know. I guess I'm just saying that it's undeniable that Mike has a temper, though he's not the only character who does. And that Mike's inevitable s5 breakdown will probably involve rage as well as tears. Does Mike have a "formidable and hideous temper"? I don't know. I think that sort of depends on who is judging. I am pretty sure that Mike thinks he does, though.
And... lastly... this is just a parallel that I thought was interesting, which probably doesn't mean anything, probably it's just a coincidence, but I'm already deep enough into this analysis that I've lost my mind so...

The Eye and Hand of Vecna in This Context
Something that has been bothering me is this:
Mike, Will, and El are obviously paralleled to two trios from other franchises, with Will and El, respectively, as the "head"/primary character in the trio.
They're paralleled to Harry/Ron/Hermione (no, I don't like talking about HP parallels very much because //gestures at everything about JKR with my very trans hands, but I don't think that discomfort on my end negates the obvious parallels), with Will generally functioning as Harry (although I'm aware that Will and Mike get the Ron/Hermione treatment in the airport), with everything to do with his connection with Henry.
They're also paralleled to Luke/Leia/Han, with El generally functioning as Luke.
So, the thing that has been bothering me is: if Mike is just as much a protagonist as Will and El are, and not just a romantic interest for the two of them, why isn't there also a trio in which Mike gets to play the leading role? And, uh... so... I have a thought about that, but it requires me to dig a bit deeper into the lore behind the artifacts left after Kas (nominally) killed Vecna in D&D lore: the Hand and the Eye.
The Hand of Vecna:
The Eye of Vecna:
(link to the site where I took these screenshots from is included in the section about Vecna in D&D)
So... if (and I'm very aware that it's a big if) Mike is going to turn out to have been foreshadowed by Eddie's Vecna, then I believe that this is the trio he's at the head of. Vecna/Eye of Vecna/Hand of Vecna, with El as the Hand and Will as the Eye.
I mean, the Hand's thing is strength (El's telekinesis lends strength to her/anybody she is helping use it for-- ie. flipping the car in s3, where flipping it back over requires multiple people and Mike's lever system). It improves attacks during combat (again... El's telekinesis sort of makes her the gang's heavy hitter). It can apparently also freeze creatures (we see El do this at least twice in s1-- she freezes Troy in place after he tries to attack Mike, and freezes the Demogorgon in place when it's trying to attack the Party). And it can be used to cast a number of different spells including Teleport (El can't exactly teleport, but she can use the mind void to travel anywhere a given person is in her mind) and some necromantic spells.
Interestingly, although they're not spells the Hand can provide according to screenshot above, bringing back the dead, like El does to Max at the end of s4, can be done using a necromantic spell in D&D.
And the Eye... I mean. Truesight is right there. But in general, it's a lot about being able to see through just about everything (including time, which is pretty interesting), with fits pretty well with Will as the spy/Will as the sensor of all things Upside Down. The spells it can cast are pretty interesting as well, and do make me wonder if the fact that Will was (or possibly still ever so slightly is?) part of the hivemind might give him some ability to control what the hivemind does? I don't know, but it's a thought.
Also, the effect of using the Eye is really interesting, given the fact that Will was infected by the shadow monster/Mind Flayer right at the moment when he tried to order it to "go away" (failed Dominate Monster?), and then the whole possession got worse/his soul was almost consumed leaving him essentially a puppet under the control of the shadow monster/Mind Flayer after he attempted to spy back (possibly failed Clairvoyance?). Also, fun fact: Disintegrate causes a "thin green ray" to "spring from your finger" in order to turn a target to dust. I can't help but think about Will the Wise's green fireballs.
I don't know⊠I just think the parallels are worth thinking about.
To be 100% clear, I'm not saying that Will and El's powers/abilities come from Mike (just like in the HP parallel, Will paralleling Harry/the Chosen One doesn't take away from El or Mike's positions as co-protagonists with him, or in the SW parallel, El paralleling Luke doesn't mean that she's the only protagonist/Chosen One in ST). Nor am I suggesting that Mike in any way owns Will or El. I'm only pointing out that there are some striking similarities between their powers/experiences and the effects of Hand and Eye in D&D, so if the theories about Mike creating the Upside Down/shadow monster are correct, then... those similarities are interesting.
(But, hey, I mean, fun fact-- if this is actually the intended read, then all three are paralleling powerful wizards in popular culture, which is fun.)
Also also... something I've always found super weird is that Will's eyes go brown when he's possessed, never black. Which... is odd, because black is traditional for possessions, and it would look more unnatural, it would align more with the shadow monster's colours, and it would be a really clear signal to the audience that there's something wrong with the colour of his eyes because as it stands, unless you already know that Will has hazel eyes, nothing seems off (especially because the characters never mention the change either). I mean, the shadow monster is black/dark grey. Henry's eyes are blue and never go darker than that. But Mike's eyes are just about that same shade of brown that Will's were when they were at their darkest...
I mean, if nothing else, Mike as Vecna and Will and El as the Eye and Hand would explain why Mike keeps losing (being cut off from) both of them.
And, I mean... we all know Will tends to hang out on Mike's left, but so does El (it's just less obvious with El, because she also has a motif of facing Mike head on). Largely (though not always-- if there's a true pattern, I can't tell what it is), when they're not in this alignment is when they're disagreeing/not on the same page/not pretending to be on the same page with Mike. I mean... you know. Something something, Vecna's left hand and left eye?
No, Seriously, Will and El are So Often on Mike's Left

The Good News
Now that I've gotten through all of this, I do want to say that, even if Eddie's Vecna is foreshadowing something about Mike's role in the supernatural plot of s5, I don't believe they're setting him up to be a true villain. Like... if Mike did actually create the Upside Down/the shadow monster/in some way impact them, I very much do not believe that he is aware of it as of s4, nor do I believe that he would ever intentionally hurt any of the people that the Upside Down has tormented all these years. Well, except himself [gunshot]
Obviously he would be absolutely ripped open if he learned any of what happened was in any way his fault. He'd be absolutely gutted. If you're a "Mike needs to have a sobbing, screaming breakdown in s5" kind of person, man would you get your wish and then some.
My point is, even if they're setting up a twist where Mike('s repressed emotions) have been an antagonistic force all along, I very much do not believe that Mike is being set up as an antagonist, in his own right.
This is where I'm going to bring it back to the fact that we don't actually know what Dustin or Erica were rolling to do. Most likely, in the game itself, they were rolling for various attacks. But we don't hear that. And we don't actually hear Eddie ever say that Vecna was killed, it's just implied from the context of the scene. Which to me means that the ending is not set in even analogous stone. If Vecna does foreshadow Mike's role in the supernatural plot, then all we know is that an Eleven alone can't defeat/solve whatever's going wrong with him, but a twenty (whatever is defined as a twenty) can.
By which I mean, I don't think Mike has to die in the end in order to fit with the analogy.
Also! I think it's really important that Eddie's D&D session is the only one that we see Mike participating in, where he doesn't do any active narrating. Obviously he narrates for the Demogorgon and Thessalhydra campaigns. However, he also takes over narrating for Will's campaign, when he decides to light a fire and sacrifice himself to destroy the Juju hoard.
In Eddie's campaign, though, he follows along. His PC 0's out (which could reference a future physical injury, or an inability on his part to keep fighting for some other reason), and they call a time out to discuss. During that conversation, Dustin specifically asks Mike for his opinion on what they should do (which I have some Thoughts about in the broader context of Dustin's characterization in s4, but those are so wildly outside the bounds of this post-- I'll make a different post later), and Mike really does act like a good leader. He asks Dustin and Erica for context on their HP, and assesses that if they keep fighting it will be difficult, but in the end he tells them that the call is up to them, because their characters are the only ones left on the battle field. That's all he says about the game. And I think the fact that all he says is that the fight will be "difficult" is really good news, because it means that the ending is more open.
Finally, it's possible that if Mike is actually the person being foreshadowed by the use of Vecna in Eddie's campaign, and if Will and El are intentionally paralleled to the Eye and the Hand respectively, then Mike's lost hand/eye signals may not necessarily literally mean that he's going to lose his body parts, but rather that he's going to lose or feel like he's lost both Will and El one more time before everything is over.
The Bad News
IF any of this is correct-- specifically, IF Mike did create the shadow monster or the Upside Down or even just influenced it in some way... even if Henry was somehow exercising power over it to make it more dangerous than necessary... I'm just not convinced that everybody would be able to forgive him.
I mean... Will, obviously would. That's kind of a foregone conclusion, especially since at least in the scenario I'm speculating about, none of what happened would be anything Mike knew he was in any way complicit in until after the fact.
I also think El would probably be able to understand pretty quickly given that she knows what it's like to do something without knowing you can do it, and to have to come to terms with the fact that others have suffered as a result. That being said, if we DO get Mike in the scenario I've been outlining, and then we DON'T get a parallel to the s1 "I'm the monster" "no you're not the monster-- you saved me" scene, except with Mike saying that he's the monster, and El assuring him that he's not because there's no such thing as being a monster or a superhero, but he was her first ever friend so she could never consider him a monster? I'll sue.
A lot of the others I'm way more up in the air about, because I really think it would come down to a lot of context in how it was portrayed, whether the others could manage to get into a somewhat normal groove with him ever again (though I highly doubt they'd have the Party end the show broken up, so I suspect they, at least, would find a way to come to terms with what happened).
But really... it's Nancy that concerns me? In literally any scenario where Mike might have had ANYTHING to do with the Upside Down in any capacity outside of what we've explicitly seen in the show. Whether he knew what he was doing or not. Whether Henry was the one orchestrating things in s1-s4/presumably at least early s5 or not. I just...
I can see a path where she could forgive him, right? Though I'm really worried that's a path where she would forgive him and take all that blame and put it onto herself because he was he little brother and she didn't notice.
But I just... I don't know.
I just know how horribly she's raked herself over the coals over Barb's death ever since s1, and I just worry about whether she would be able to accept that, in the scenario I've been outlining, Mike didn't actually mean to do anything/couldn't actually have stopped it because he didn't know it was happening. Because I suspect that in order for Nancy to get to that place, she'd have to confront the fact that SHE isn't at fault for what happened to Barb, either. That she did not do anything wrong (at least, not wrong enough that she deserves to be still agonizing over it four years later) by telling Barb to go home that night. That there was no way Nancy could have known that something bad was happening to Barb, and that the fact that she didn't stop what was happening BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS ANYTHING FOR HER TO STOP, doesn't mean she's in any way at fault.
And... I REALLY hope we're going to get to see Nancy confronting that head on in s5. But it just.... concerns me in the context of these theories about Mike's potential supernatural role.
#mike wheeler#byler#my analysis#I feel like there HAS to be a tag for all this Mike-and-the-Upside-Down stuff?#but I legitimately don't know what it is#long post#<- as always //sigh#I don't know what brevity is I guess#also#if Mike DOES have literally any sort of supernatural abilities#I fully believe that Karen knows/suspects somehow#100% because of that super coded âI never want you to feel like you have to hide anything from meâ conversation#which YEAH does read like she's encouraging him that he can tell her if he's queer#but like#I've always thought she picked a SUPER weird time to have that conversation??#âoh your best friend who I suspect you might have feelings for is missing? Okay well just so you know it's okay if you're gayâ#like#just a really weird time when Mike isn't even a little volunteering that info#but if she knew somehow that Mike had supernatural abilities + knew somehow that something supernaturally fishy had gone down with Will#I feel like yeah no that would be the exact RIGHT time to try and assure him he could tell her âanythingâ lol#which now I'm thinking about this the context of Troy's âkilled by some other queerâ comment#idk idk idk I'm just thinking thoughts at this point

Happy 20th Anniversary Robots In Disguise!
This year, and today in particular, marks the 20-year anniversary of Transformers Robots in Disguise airing in the United States. This was the official English language dub of the Japanese show Transformers Car Robots, which aired in Japan the year before.  This show and itâs accompanying toy line were a big shift in the Transformers brand and affected how things moved forward in the new millennium. It was also a big influence on me and this website in itâs early years, so both the brand and TFW2005 may not be what it is today without it.
We hope you will read on after the break to check out our celebration of Robots in Disguise on itâs 20th!
Intro
The following is not a comprehensive article on the show proper, but rather a trip down memory lane from my personal perspective. It was a period of change in my life, in the fandom, in the brand, and in the world â all happening at once. Robots in Disguise was smack dab in the middle of it all and I think thatâs why it still resonates with me all these years later. For a deeper dive into the world of Robots In Disguise you can check RIDForever.info, a site I maintain just about RID and Car Robots. The 2021 updates are here, and the 2017 round of updates are here. Iâd also suggest checking the TFWe issue all about RID over on the 2005 Boards. Now, onto todayâs festivitiesâŠ
The Show
RID, and yes I say RID as if it is the only RID. If you must reference that other RID show and itâs off-shoots, refer to it as RID 201x, thanks. đ RID aired during the Fox Kids programming block on a Saturday morning, with additional episodes set to air each weekday during the afternoon hours. Instead of stretching the show out over the course of 30+ weeks with only a new ep each weekend, they were going to blaze through it non-stop. By the end of the first week, we would have been 7 eps in. That however hit a big roadblock due to 9/11 just three days later. While some local markets did air the episodes, many larger city networks, and especially east coast markets, stuck with news coverage.  Many of us did not catch the early episodes on TV the first go around. In addition, several of the episodes got pulled from TV due to depictions of buildings being destroyed and other similar visuals which understandably could upset children that just experienced 9/11. So right off the bat, the new millennium and new era of Transformers were dealing with a new reality.
The show, for those that donât know â was a weird one-off in Transformers history. We had G1 and then the G2 remixes for a bit. Beast Wars came on the scene and ran all the way through 2000 with itâs successor â Beast Machines.  During the Beast Wars era â Japan did a couple of their own Beast Wars shows, non-CGI extensions of what we saw in the US.  Their market wasnât quite ready for full CGI so they stuck with traditional anime. When Hasbro decided to continue Beast Wars into Beast Machines, Takara went a completely different way â a traditional animated show which brought back Autobots and âDecepticonsâ, mixing them in with the beasts. They focused the toys on a couple new and complex molds, then filled the rest of the line with repaints of previous toys. Old 2nd tier Beast Wars toys, G2 Laser Prime, and even some Generation 1 molds in the form of the Combaticons got new life as new characters in this show, capped with the biggest TF of them all at the time â a repainted G1 Fortress Maximus, now Brave Maximus. It was the prototype for what the Transformers brand did for years to come â repainting old toys into new characters. Universe, Classics, Botcon, and even some Generations runs used this method to give us some great toys in the 00s.
While there is a very complicated and long explanation for how every single Japanese show is one continuity, to someone casually starting with Car Robots it was a refresh, a new story, a new arrival on Earth. The Autobots vs the Predacons, and eventually the Combatrons/Decepticons. It was a hard cut from the last 5 years or so of CGI Beasts. Hand drawn traditional animation featuring vehicle Transformers. It wasnât G1, but many of the folks who grew up with G1 were just getting out of college around this time. They were rediscovering their childhood love of Transformers through Beast Wars, flea market finds, raids on their parentsâ attics and basements, and for the internet savvy â imports of Japanese reissues from Takara. It was a perfect storm of nostalgia; a return to Autobots and Decepticons was welcomed by kids and adults alike.
RID and TFW2005
In the years leading up to Car Robots, I was just getting into the internet, coding, design, some digital music, and all the possibility that came with it. Beast Wars, especially when it hit Season 2/3 and the inclusion of G1 lore, really got me focusing on Transformers again as a hobby. I eventually combined the two newfound hobbies into one and Transformer World 2005 was born. At no point did I ever think it would last 20+ years and take over my life in the way it did. I started the full version of TFW2005 around April 2000, with some starts and stops before that. That was right around when Car Robots started airing in Japan. Through the magic of 56k internet, I was able to connect with folks in Japan and get them to send me VHS tapes of Car Robots. Really nice, high-quality tapes too, I still have them hehe. To the younglings reading â try to picture this: no youtube, no video sharing. The concept of streaming anything did not exist yet. Napster and the eventual peer to peer stuff hadnât fully kicked off. Plus, we were all viewing the internet on giant computers in our rooms at the speed of 1x on your phone. Less than 1 bar 3G mobile speeds today.
Yes, someone recorded episodes from TV to video tape over there, did that a couple weeks at a time, then physically mailed them across the world to me, who then got them on the internet. Can you imagine waiting weeks to watch an episode of TV the size of a twitter profile avatar? Crazy. Uploading a full episode to the internet was a big pain in the ass, not easily done. I decided to get a converter that allowed me to plug my VCR into the computer and encode the tape into digital format. From there, it was reduced using Microsoftâs WMV technology so that the episodes were about 5 MB each. 30 minute episodes at 5MB each. Dimensions â 176 x 144 pixels. 4k video today â 3840 x 2160 pixels. You can imagine that video looked like crap. But we didnât care â we were blown away. Old school animation, vehicles, some cool Japanese anime vibes, it was what we as G1 fans kinda had in the back of our heads on what Transformers should be in a new era, and we were seeing it. Most of us had no clue what they were saying or what was going on. Also didnât care. I still to this day think CR/RID is better like that.
So one of the first things TFW2005 did on the internet was provide these super small windows into Car Robots and what was going on in Japan. It helped get US fans hyped up for what Transformers could be. It got us wanting the toys, and importers bringing the Takara toy line over were moving serious product.  It helped swing Hasbro, who was planning to return to Autobots and Decepticons again down the road, to move that schedule up. Instead of running Beast Machines until 2002 and then starting what we now know as the Unicron Trilogy, it was cut short. Robots in Disguise as a toy line and show came over in 2001, ran fast and hard for a year with non stop releases, got extended because it did so well, and then faded into the Universe line of repaints. The new millennium of Transformers was here and Robot In Disguise kicked it off with a bang.
Wrap Up
As we all continue with collecting Transformers now, regardless if you tagged into the fandom during G1, Beasties, the Unicron Trilogy, the Movies, or just yesterday â letâs take the time to give Car Robots and RID some props! It set the tone for what the new millennium of the brand would be. It gave us some toys ahead of their time. It solidified the repaint as an accepted thing in the hobby. And it gave us one crazy 39 episode run of TV thatâs still a fun ride 20 years later.
For those that would like to learn more about RID and Car Robots â I still maintain a Robots in Disguise website that archives everything I have or came across. There is a lot there if you want to go on a tour of all the awesome Car Robots and Robots In Disguise era stuff. Check it out at RIDFOREVER.INFO! FIYAH!
Let us know what you think and remember from the good old days of RID on the 2005 Boards here!
Epilogue
If someone over there at Hasbro is reading â can someone please figure out who owns the rights to the show in the US market and then get it out on DVD in full, finally? Work all that funky licensing stuff out (if there is any) and get it done. The US has never had access to it via an official release. Maybe get it up on YouTube like G1? Something. Announcing plans for that before the end of 2021 would be a nice 20th anniversary tribute.

HEY.
I haven't been able to keep up on the whole Dhar Mann lore as of current day, and I'm sorry, BUT FUCK THAT PIECE OF SHIT RIGHT NOW. He's not important at the moment. There's someone else who I really need to discuss. You probably know who this person is if you're in the Sonic fandom.
A few questions for anyone who's new to this person:
1. Do you know who Chris Chan is?
2. If so, what are your thoughts on Chris?
3. Does the character Sonichu ring any bells? If not, here's an official picture of him below:

For anyone who has never heard about Chris Chan, I don't have time to go into the whole lore here because it's not important. You can jump down the CWC rabbit hole on your own. There are MANY documentaries on this person. I recommend Geno Samuel's docuseries on Chris Chan, if you want to know EVERYTHING about this person so far and you're committed to the task.
To sum up Chris Chan in a few words, she's an autistic trans woman who created Sonichu and dealt with a shit load of trolls. Her parents (her late father and elderly mother) have enabled their own child her whole life.
I'm thoroughly disgusted by this person and I don't fucking respect her whatsoever. The ONLY amount of respect I'm bothering to give her AT ALL is using the correct pronouns for Chris when referring to her. That's IT.
Obligatory trigger warning (I am DEAD SERIOUS here, so please listen):
This post will be going into sensitive subject matter such as r@p3, s3xual assault, elder abuse, inc3$t, and Chris Chan ADMITTING TO (ALLEGEDLY) HARMING HER OWN MOTHER. (There will be videos linked in this post if you want to watch them. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.)
If any of those subjects is triggering for you in ANY WAY, or they just flat-out make you uncomfortable, please don't feel like you're obligated to read this post. I understand that these subjects are extremely sensitive, and I'm going to try my hardest to talk about these subjects in the most respectful manner possible. I don't want to bring back any trauma you or someone you know may have. That's the last thing I would ever want to do. Put your mental health and well-being first. Again, like I say with every post that talks about sensitive subject matter that may be triggering or uncomfortable for people, consume media that sparks joy for you.
Any resources that you or someone you know may need will be in this post too. Some countries might not even have resources for things like this locally, but I will try my best to find them.
United States:
Canada:
Latin America:
South America:
ALL European countries:
ALL of Africa:
ALL of the Middle East:
ALL of Asia:

New Zealand:
Anyone who's still here, let's get on with the subject of this post, which are the current events in Chris Chan's life.
Recently, Chris Chan has admitted to (allegedly) s3xually assaulting Barbara, her elderly mother. There is audio that was leaked yesterday of her admitting to this very (alleged) action.
One of the phone calls that was leaked is below. This is that full phone call:
youtube
Here's a video with the segments where Chris admitted to (allegedly) s3xually assaulting Barbara (WARNING: THE THUMBNAIL IS GROSS):
youtube
As of now, Barbara is currently in the hospital for a mental wellness check to see if she's lucid. She's also there for a r@p3 test to see if there was any penetration.
Chris was detained (most likely to be questioned), then released. Her initial plans were to stay with her aunt and uncle, who live near where she and her mother live. Those plans fell through, as apparently they rejected Chris. She's not allowed to have any contact with her mother, or be at the house until August 5th. Their pets are currently left unattended in the house....I don't know who's going to be taking care of the animals with nobody there. I don't know where Chris will be staying for the next few days. That hasn't been disclosed to the public, as far as I've been able to do research on these current events.
I cannot say that Chris has actually COMMITTED THIS CRIME until the test results come in for Barbara, Chris is tried in court, Chris gets a prison sentence, and Barbara is put into a nursing home. That's why I said she (Chris) admitted to ALLEGEDLY committing this crime.
Incest between a mother and son (that's how the crime was written, please forgive me) in the state of Virginia is a Class 5 felony. Class 5 felonies are considered "wobblers", as they can be deemed felonies or misdemeanors, depending on the circumstances. If deemed a felony, Chris could face from one to up to ten years in prison. If deemed a misdemeanor, Chris could face up to twelve months in prison. Because Chris is on disability, they might go easier on her. On the flip side, because of Barbara's age, they might go harder on Chris.
If Barbara happened to be lucid during those events, the charges above would apply. If she wasn't lucid at all and was confused, shit would get VERY serious for Chris.
I also can't exactly say if the phone call is even real; however, there's evidence of Chris admitting to having a fetish for old people, including her own mother. According to a person Chris is friends with, she's had dreams about having s3x with her mother. I also am not sure if Chris is confusing herself with having s3x with fucking MEWTWO, if she was coerced into lying, or if she's hiding something else and decided to say this to cover her own ass. Did I mention she's married to some of her own characters (Magi-Chan, Cryzel, and Sylvana) AND Mewtwo from Pokémon? THAT'S TRUE. YOU CAN LOOK THAT UP IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME.
Why do I say that Barbara needs to be in a nursing home? BECAUSE CHRIS OBVIOUSLY ISN'T FIT TO TAKE CARE OF HER OWN MOTHER. I'D LIKE HER MOM TO BE SAFE WITH PEOPLE WHO CAN ACTUALLY TAKE CARE OF HER.
This whole situation is disgusting and it makes me sick to my stomach. Chris Chan is a MONSTER. I hope Barbara's okay. I know she's not a very good person either (welp, birds of a feather flock together), but I do have sympathy for the elderly and what happened to her is unforgivable.
Some other YouTubers who have talked about this are Gibi and Rogue The Internet Man, as far as I know for now.

This is a place where many once-invading species have attacked throughout history, and it has sunken into the ground since due to the massive destruction created over centuries. However, the place has since become a point of unity for everyone, with communities of Hive, Cabal, Humans, Eliksni, etc. all building shelters within the crater and living together. Itâs a bustling district, and only because Magnus sacrificed so much of himself and his efforts to unify everyone.

5 things your Guardian dislikes(this can be anything): Dishonesty, disloyalty, feeling hopeless, giving up, loss
Your Guardian has to rest. What is their living space like: Itâs well-managed, with a LOT of collectibles from all around the galaxy in display cases, organized on shelves and wall hangers, and on tables. Magnus loves to collect trinkets that have meaning to him.
Does your Guardian have any casual wear?(Y'all remember Polyvore? The website URSTYLE works very similar if that helps!):
What hobbies and/or skills does you Guardian have: Writing and reciting poetry, learning languages (speaks English, Ulurent, Eliksni all fluently), fighting, crafting armor, singing
What would your Guardianâs lore book be called: Broken Broker
Where was your Guardian reborn?(If you created the location, give us a little description!): Sector 25 in The Last City
What were they wearing when they were reborn: Scorched black cotton hoodie, worn-out black jeans, beat-up sneakers
What was their reaction to being reborn: FIGHT, AND DEFEND THE PEOPLE!!!
What was their reaction to their first rez: Sheer confusion, then immediate duty
After being reborn, did they meet friendlies first or hostiles: Both. He met Vex who were attacking and rampaging The Last City, but fought them and was then met by Zavala whoâd come to handle the situation, only to see a new Guardian had already done this. Zavala saw the distress on Magnusâs face at this, and assured him over and over again.
Who was the first other Guardian they met?(Same thing! If you made them, give a little description!): Zavala
Did your Guardian get reborn with, or find, any indication of their past life? If so what do they have/found: Magnus has no indication of his past life, and knows nothing about it. He assumes he wasnât Reefborn, but he partially wonders if he was just because of his vehement hatred for Mara Sov. Magnus canât find anything on who he was, nor does he really care to know.
How did your Guardian get their name(if they didnât rez with past life momentos): He knew/remembered it, and also Einar addressed him by âMagnusâ when he was first revived and woke up.
Going back to your Guardianâs lore book, what would be some some quotes or passages from their book: Two passages are actually readable at my Ao3, dawnbreakerdystopia! Most of the lorebook passages would recount the tales of Magnusâs efforts to join the warring species of the galaxy together in unity, and would likely use the Hammer of Sol which he wields as a metaphor, leading those who read them to wonder if Magnus actually wielded it (he does). The passages would also recount the daring exploits heâs done to protect his friends, family, the training he put Ghaul through to be a strong and independent Guardian, and overall theyâd just be written like poetic legends.
Does your Guardian have a significant other: Cayde-6, and theyâre married.
Did your Guardian go explore first before going to The Last City? If so, where to: Magnus never explored until he was resurrected.
What was their reaction to first seeing The Last City: This place needs defenders.
Is your Guardian a part of a clan: Not officially. Heâs sort of a part of every group regardless of whether he chooses to be or not. Life finds a way to drag him into them all.
Does your Guardianâs clan have a back story? If so, what is it?(if you want to or able to share): N/A
If your Guardian would have a quote as a flavor text for a weapon and/or piece of armor, what would they be: âIâve got a thousand years on me, and for each year, a million lives. I canât bear to sacrifice any one but my own.â
If your Guardian has had any interactions with any civilians (The Last City/The Farm), Eliksni, Cabal, Vex, Hive, Taken, Scorn, Rouge Lightbearers, or Iron Lords/War Lords(if your Guardian is an Old Light) tell us about it!: Magnus has unified Cabal and Humankind, mostly, because he was brought by the Traveler to Ghaul who was resurrected as a Guardian himself. Heâs had plenty of rough encounters with them, but nowadays, they accept him as their Evocate General, and bend to his every command (Magnus NEVER abuses this). Magnus has had very few positive interactions with Hive, as Savathun and Oryx have constantly tried to seduce him with Darkness and ruin him. He struggles to trust Hive, but knows that there is good in everything just as there is bad, nothing is inherently evil, and thus, he has to and does accept Hive who are willing to be his allies. Magnusâs interactions with Eliksni have always been positive, and heâs always gotten along with them. Scorn and Vex, he has yet to meet any whoâd be willing to work with him. Magnus personally hates the Vex entirely, but still holds out the belief that there is at least one out there whoâs good and friendly.
Does your Guardian have any unconventional allies or connections(By Vanguard standards): PLENTY!!!! Ghaul, Spider, being Evocate General of Cabal, you name it.
How does your Guardian feel about themselves or others using Stasis: Magnus is against himself using it. He understands that others can make use of the power, but he HATES the Darkness, and would never trust a single thing from it, let alone a âgiftâ which would inevitably corrupt him, not to mention bring him nearer to it which he refuses to do.
Did they run The Last Wish raid? How did they react to seeing a live Ahamkara a.k.a Riven: Magnus has not run this raid yet.
Did they run The Deep Stone Crypt raid? How did they react to the Crypt and seeing Exo Eliskni: Magnus has not run this raid yet, either.
Is your Guardian from D1? How did they react to seeing Taniks alive once again: Heâs not from D1
Where did they go and what did they do during The Red War: Magnus followed the main story, and was the only Lightbearer, thus he spearheaded the entire operation and literally held the fate of every single life on his shoulders and his alone. He fought, nonstop, and never gave up or slowed down.
Here are some characters that are either polarizing or have created a strong enough mass emotion within the community. What opinion does your Guardian hold on each of them(These are only a handful of characters!)>>>
Osiris, First Warlock Vanguard, originally exiled: Magnus looks up to Osiris for his wisdom, only a little, though, and heâd never tell Osiris this. Both of them know it, though, and words are not necessary to convey their mutual respect.
Eris Morn, Bane of the Swarm: He loves her, he wants to help her at all costs, and he knows to never pity Eris, or try protecting her without asking if she needs protection first, as sheâs highly capable and strong-willed.
Cayde-6, Sixth Hunter Vanguard: Magnus is fucking head over HEELS for him, and would lay his life on the line for Cayde. He was devastated beyond words when Uldren killed him, but came to understand that it was the Darknessâs doing, not Uldrenâs. And thus, he forgave him.
Ikora Rey, Second Warlock Vanguard: Mom. Sheâs just straight-up his mom.
Commander Zavala, Second Titan Vanguard: Mentor, dad-like friend, always reliable.
Saint-14, legendary Titan, First Titan Vanguard: Extreme respect, love, honors him deeply, aspires to be like him, MUST PROTECT!!!
Lord Saladin, Iron Banner handler, One of the last remaining Iron Lords: Indifferent. Magnus entirely disagrees with and somewhat hates what the Iron Lords did, but he senses good in Saladin and sees it as well. He holds onto that good, as he does for everything and everyone.
Lord Shaxx, Crucible handler, Hero of Twilight Gap, living megaphone: FRIEND!!! Always a good motivator, always reliable, selfless af which Magnus respects, and Magnus aspires to be so much like him. Is also slightly intimidated by Shaxx.
The Crow, New Light, Ex-Enforcer to The Spider: Friend, must be protected, is a new person and not Uldren, is capable of great things and must be guided to do just that. Magnus sees Crow follows his heart, and thatâs more than enough for him to know this man is on the right path.
The Spider, The Shoreâs Only Law, founder of âHouseâ Spider: DAD!!! Spider adopted Magnus after (reluctantly at first) he went to Spider with a bounty from the Vanguard saying to kill him. Magnus knew this had to be a setup, it was, and Spider was immediately thankful, and then began calling Magnus his son. Both of them trust each other with everything and anything, and Magnus knows Spider is a good man at heart.
Uldren Sov, Prince of the Reef, Master of Crows: No. Donât trust him, heâs misguided as FUCK!
Mara Sov, Queen of the Reef, Queen of the Awoken, Ex-Kell of Wolves: FUCK! YOU!!! Magnus would throw her off the throne and take it himself if he wasnât so busy being Evocate General. Heâd imprison her until her natural death. The things Mara has done, to the Awoken, the galaxy, and her brother, are unforgiveable, and she MUST pay for that.
Variks, the Loyal, founder of House Judgement: A friend, an ally, someone Magnus can rely on. He values Variks, even if he made mistakes in the past, but Magnus is a firm believer in destiny, and thus thinks Variksâs actions have been done for a reason which is to bring the world to the present itâs at.
Mithrax, the Forsaken, Kell of Light, founder of House Light: Absolutely reliable, always a good friend, Magnus will drop everything and go help protect Mithrax or aid him in his endeavors if heâs able. Magnus loves him as a close friend, and is deeply bound to House Light.
The Exo Stranger/Elizabeth âElsieâ Bray, Granddaughter of Clovis I and Sister to Ana Bray: Can be trusted, must be trusted, and Magnus also takes pity on her for what she went through both in the future, and by the hands of Clovis Bray.
Eramis, of House Salvation, Kell of Darkness: FUCK NOPE, donât trust, avoid at all costs.
Empress Caiatl of the Cabal Imperial Empire: An ally and definitely trustable. Her motives are questionable, but Magnus understands where sheâs coming from, and therefore believes she can be a great companion with some compromise.
Taniks the Scarred, the Perfected, the Abomination, the Shadow Thief: Nooooooooooooo get away get away get away GET AWAY!!!
The Darkness is fast approaching. How is your Guardian handling it: A N X I E T Y! !! !!!! ! !! But Magnus is taking action, fighting it head-on and never backing down for even a moment. He refuses to let the Darkness take hold, and aims to destroy it entirely once and for all.
And finally, does your Guardian have any advice for any New Lights: âThe Darkness is a lie, but the Light is true. Nobody can see in the shadows of night, so itâs your duty as a Guardian to eclipse the world in endless sun, and create a world everyone can see within and beyond.â

A character analysation of IdVâs Bloody Queen
Bloody Queen AKA Mary is a hunter in the mobile/PC game Identity V. She is personally my favorite hunter because she is easy to learn but hard to master. Her backstory is something that has always interested me though, so i decided to compile my thoughts onto this one post.
Something i appreciate about IdVâs character roster is that some of them are based off of historical characters, and interesting ones at that. So expect a lot of history lessons and references that should be explained in order to understand a character fully (especially with Mary considering how there isnât a lot shown about her backstory through promotional content, and im talking about stuff like the official website here).
With that in mind, letâs just get into it.
There is not a lot we know about Mary other than the fact that she is inspired from a mix of stories, those being about a French queen named Marie Antoinette and Bloody Mary. These two are used in seperate ways, Marie Antoinetteâs story being used as heavy inspiration for Maryâs backstory and lore, while Bloody Mary is a visual/gameplay inspiration.
Maryâs description on her info page and on the official idv website isÂ
This is strange because it really tells little to nothing about Mary besides her being aware that the position of a queen means a lot of vulnerability. It also strikes me as weird because every other hunter has a fleshed out backstory being written under this tab. (With the exception of Guard 26)
So overall, the ground to work on is pretty small, we dont have a lot of info revealed to us, and therefore leaves her to be a character who loses a lot of potential on a writing stance.
Intro Video
Mary does have an introduction video, though, which explains the base of what happened to her Pre-manor.Â
The video explains how Mary was the queen of a country that had a bad financial crisis which was so bad people couldnât afford food (if we are sticking fully to the Marie Antoinette inspo, this was in the 1790âČs) and the public felt as if Mary didnât care enough to help her people, the citizens voted her to be beheaded under a guillotine. Truth be told, Mary was actually trying to help her citizens by giving them cake.
We have probably the most lore information about Mary from her deduction descriptions, which explain her career as a queen more in detail, about struggles she had and her situation in general.
Deductions
(Credits to u/mawile94 on Reddit for the images)
The first conclusion is clearly telling us that the king Mary married had a problematic family, and the kingâs family probably only looked at Mary as someone who will keep the familyâs name up, someone who will have a child with the king. (Also, dont get confused: Maria Theresia is Maryâs motherâs name, not her actual name.)
Mary used to spend a lot of time away from the palace in Petit Trianon, which is a manor located in Versailles. The secret letter tells us that Mary was egoistic, naive, and was kind of a glutton. The letter mentions how rumors are powerful, and are going to spread really fast once word comes out about the âincompetenceâ and lacking abilities witihin the royal family, which will eventually be Maryâs demise.
Princess Lamballe is once again a historical recreation of actual Priness Lamballe, a part of the Savoy House (Western EU country). In real life, Lamballe was actually the confidante (someone who you would discuss private matters with as a royal) of Marie Antoinette after her 1 year old marriage came to an end. IRL, Princess Lambelle dies along Marie Antoinetteâs side as she gets killed in the French Revolution.Â
The shameful secret can really only be assumed to mean that Lamballe was actually Maryâs secret affair, especially looking at how all evidence suggests that the actual royal family Mary is connected to seems to be a mess. Mary is kind of confirmed to be wlw from this deduction which is fucking cool, but this rumor mightve been what also caused Mary to be beheaded. (But, IRL, the king Artois considered Marie to be physicially unattractive or even smart enough for him, in contrary to him, where he apparently was attractive. He did end up making up with quite a number of mistresses. But letâs not get into a conversation about how unhealthy or toxic royal relationships were in the 1700âČs)
this is obviously saying Lamballe is being replaced by the Yolande (Countess of Polignac) as her confidante. IRL, this happens because the Countess of Pilognac and Lamballe start having quarrels against each other, in which they try to win over the queenâs heart, and over time Marie ends up preferring Yolandeâs company. But Lamballe feels as if Yolande was a bad influence on the queen, yet she could do nothing about it. The friendship between Lamballe and Marie remained regardless, and she constantly admired Lamballeâs loyalty toward her. "She is the only woman I know who never bears a grudge; neither hatred nor jealousy is to be found in her."Â
Mary finally has a child, and it is a girl. Here we see the reinforcement of Lamballeâs loyalty, but with this conclusion also being titled as a rumor, it is also telling that this is one of many reasons people will start getting suspicious of Maryâs possible affairs. Â
This conclusion only leads me to believe that one of the several reasons why Mary was treated the way she was by the public was because of jealousy towards her life and the things she achieved at a young age. The description of the people who are spreading the rumors are bitter, sour people who take joy out of seeing the bad in successful people. Here is where it all goes downhill (as evident by the subtitle under the deduction title.)
We will once again need a little bit of a history lesson for this one:
Koblenz, first of all is a city in Germany. The reason why the French would ever think of even setting up anything in Germany was because of the French Immigrants, and the reason why the Germans were cool about this was because the archbishop-elector (one of the chiep bishop electors) was the uncle of Louis XVI-a persecuted king of France. Along with the refugees that entered the city, two of them was Louis XVIâs brothers: The Count of Provence and the Count of Artois. them, along with Louis XVIâs cousin, Prince Louis Joseph formed an army of aristocrats who would seek to fight for the Ancien RegimĂ© (The name of the political and social system that was popular in France at the time.) In the meantime back in France, the Royal Family gave in and decided to adopt the Constitutional Monarchy, which was very modern at the time. This deduction description just basically explains that this is where Mary and the royal family fucks up, i just thought it would be interesting to know what they actually meant by what they wrote.
Yolande has left behind the Royal Family and made a run to escape the country. If youâre wondering, at the start of the revolution Princess Lamballe was actually in Switzerland, but as soon as she got notified of the situation she revisited the royal family to aid them, and reassumed her position.
This letter in particular is pretty cut-and-clear: the intention of the revolutionists was to smudge the royal familyâs name in the dirt once and for all. What real-life anti-monarchist propaganda would consist of at the time was promiscuous imagery of Lamballe and the queen as lovers to further âbesmirchâ the queenâs reputation.
This is just obviously hinting at the aftermath of the French Revolutions and also telling us the present (at the time the letter was written). Mary gets executed by the Guillotine, and-well we all know how the rest of the story goes.
Overall, Maryâs deduction story is just a short summarization of what actually happened before and during the French Revolution: it even added the details of how actually sketchy and corrupt the royal family within was, not just the dissatisfaction of the public. As a summary of what this meant for Mary, as the Hunter, she feels pure bitterness, and anger towards the citizens for the way they treated her and the people around her. And as we can see, there was no reference towards Bloody Mary what-so-ever, and the reason why that is is because according to the Chinese version of IdV (which is what the original gameâs region/language is) Her name actually would translate to âMadame Redâ, not Bloody Queen. I think it was just the translators having fun with words, and since her design is very similar to that of what a person would think Bloody Mary looks like, i guess it made sense to them lol
But regardless, weâll still take a look at Maryâs design.
Maryâs design is simple compared to other hunter designs in IdV. A simple, ball gown which was originally white, but turned red due to Maryâs beheading, pools of blood dropped all over her body. Mary also used to have long hair, but assumed by the very broken looking locks of hair, her hair probably was cut down by the guillotine. Eagle-eyed people will also take notice to her neck, which is stitched back onto the rest of her body, which the designers wanted to include really bad since its prevalent even in concept sketches as well:
Maryâs gameplay design is based solely on mythologies about Bloody Mary, however, which makes things kind of confusing, but i guess thats what idv excels at the most lol
anyway, youâve reached the end! if you have read this far, thank you so much, i put so much effort and research into this and i hope people will make good use of it. I also hope i made you more interested in playing mary and/or the French Revolution, lol but thank you for reading this!!

idek what to add, it's been in my bean for the past 2 years now
Red Riders
No one seems to know where Red Riders, a cold chrome band that one heard off before, came from. It's like they just appeared one day and got Night City by storm. But all three of them, Mona [bass, vocals], Varhe [vocals, guitar], and Nam [drums] happened to be very attractive and had a distinctive aesthetic. And what punks of Night City love the most is some good, strong aesthetic.
It also happened that after their debut during The Silverhandâs Battle of the Bands in November 2067, Sylgie, owner of Samurai Club, the newest, hottest NC scene at the time, contacted them with a sweet, sweet deal. Sylgie didn't have much experience in actually managing bands, but she knew the right people in NC and was determined to make Red Riders big. And even tho later Riders accepted a pact with the devil that is a contract with an industry giant MSM MediaCorp, they never shied away from social commentary and managed to keep their cool and style.
The first album, named simply Red Riders came out barely four weeks after the Silverhand's Battle. It was a real reminisce of that first concert - lyrics full of lack of understanding of the world as it is and rebellion against it, all basically screamed into the microphone and ears of the listeners by main vocalist Varhe. Powerful bass and drum rhythms, the actual definition of what cold chrome is about, dirt and cold sounds that might be more at home in Totentanz than in more mainstream clubs, but somehow it just worked. With songs like Where the FUCK am I?? and WTF even is this place playing almost on the loop in radio Vexelstrom, Red Riders' first album was the hit of winter '67/'68.
The band played many gigs all around the city and at least once or twice even in some forgotten bars in Badlands, and in the meantime, they partied and made connections with other bands and influential people in Night City. In the summer of '68, they released ep PROJECT MAYHEM, which really solidified Riders images as the drink&riot kind of band. Especially after the summer music festival organized by various radio stations in the city, from which the band was kicked off from the night before their concert, but returned and played their set anyway. It was Red Riders' first performance in NCRadioFest, but thankfully not the last one - they returned for the second time, tho not in the full lineup, in '72.
In '69 premiered their second, vague, autobiographical concept album  - ETERNAL WINTER. It was still weird and exciting, and only raised more questions about where the Riders even came from. Around this time it was also revealed that the group has a contract with MSM, which to this moment was kept secret. Fans started to turn away from music that was making them feel something, but all it took to bring them all back was the concert in Reconciliation Park that Riders played in the spring that year. It was more of a spontaneously thrown together wild music fest - on makeshift stage played with Riders some other more alternative, but successful bands like The Cartesian Duelists. Between the songs, Riders addressed their fans and the controversy and then premiered their upcoming single, Tramore Bitches, with some really poignant lines: "We care, seriously, but this city is a bitch, so we won't say no to the eddies we don't deserve." Folks saw that while yeah Riders have some backup, they still will do whatever they want and not much really can stop them. Single Tramore Bitches went gold, and with some help of corporation Avera, CEO of whom was a close friend with Nam, a somewhat edited and remixed version of the song became the official theme song of CyberOlimpics hosted by Night City 2070.
Before the fall of '70 really hit Riders announced that they're going on hiatus - they wanted some time for themselves and their personal projects. Folks were crying and dying on the streets, but Riders were fast to assure that it doesn't mean the end of the group, and soon after came out Mona's first solo album. Varhe released a few eps as well, and only Nam strayed away from the music, only sometimes guesting on other artists' projects.
The only thing that surely could be called their group project during that time was a three-part album curated by Mona. Forgotten Dreams was a collection of covers of almost lost to the DataKrash songs from the beginning of the XXI century - each rearranged and performed by different artists from Night City. With the only exception being the Riders themselves who, in duets and solo, and as a whole group, covered 10 of them. The first part of this project came out in '71 in spring, and the second in fall, but thank's to the whole Digital Dead Bodies controversy that one passed by almost completely unnoticed.
In January '72 Varhe played in Unplugged for Justice in Reconciliation Park, which despite the fact that he was the only Rider at the time in Night City, was recognized as Red Riders severing all their ties with Avera and Ascalon Club, and denouncing both. In the summer Forgotten Dreams IIIÂ was released and by the end of the year, it finally got all the awards it deserved. The New Year concert was even announced and Samurai Club started selling ticked for the gig when the news of ripper gang targeting and kidnapping Mona came out, and even tho the whole thing ended more or less good, the show was called off.
Red Riders still managed to surprise everyone and on New Year's Eve they streamed their new year wishes and right before the midnight hit, they announced a new album, My photographer is a vampire out and free to download from their website. And as if that wasn't enough of surprises, barely a minute into 2073 they released also their last album. Also digital, also free, also unaffiliated with MSM MediaCorp, and titled Something ends, something begins. Their last concert happened to be during NCRadioFest '73, which played only Nam [on syths] and Varhe [bass] with additional musicians from different groups. And with that bittersweet goodbye, Red Riders officially disbanded, and all dropped from the music scene disappearing to whatever place they came from. For a hot second, some people claimed that they still saw Nam and Varhe in NC clubs, but by the end of the year, it was almost as if Red Riders were never there in the first place.
#wild hungover '77#i wanted to write it like something that could be an article in music magazine y'know#but anyway if you look at the timeline Varhe - my V - is gonna die before he gets to celebrate the 10th bday of his own band :)

how do you get into roleplaying on a ff server? like how do you do it and how do you know if your character is lore compliant? ;A; pls youre a big inspo to me
*Hugs Nonny* Getting into RP on a FF server can vary; I donât actually RP much these days, outside of some friends I already have connections to--and that in itself can be difficult just due to Life! It can take time, and patience, and some fits and starts.
And this gets...really really long, so buckle up and go below the cut, please. :)
The cut got broken by an edit. Sigh.
In game thereâs always the RP status tag, and just doing RP with folks in public spaces. There may be trolls now and then, but they can be ignored. I personally find Balmungâs Quicksand area too busy and anxiety inducing and not actually all that conducive to actual RP, even âmeet at a tavernâ walk-up type. But unless you already have a ready-made group of friends/FCmates willing to RP more than some random walk-ups with you, it may take some legwork to find folks you can and want to write with.
Social Media There are a couple of RP community blogs, like @mooglemeetâ and @ffxiv-crystal-rpâ and plenty of server-specific ones. Thereâs also some Discords for these communities. They host and advertise events and reblog people who are looking for RP contacts. Some of them have running gdoc calendars and in game linkshells and fellowships as well.
Shofie has a good post about Tumblr/social media RP blogging.
@shofie-ffxiv
Itâs a fact now that social media outside game is a way to make contacts, or even a medium for RP itself. There are few centralized websites/forums for server RP communities anymore. Making connections over your social media, like Tumblr and Twitter, can help find RP. You canât just throw your own character info out there or reblog prompts hoping others bite, though; you have to put in some work and show interest in others, too. This can be difficult and even scary. Thatâs OK.
RP is about collaboration and creating with other people, which means finding folks you can write with, and who see you as someone interesting but also interested in them and their OCs. If you want to keep it a solo endeavor focused on your own OCs, write fanfic (which Iâve actually made friends and gotten RP interests that way too through comment interactions, so hey).
If you reblog a prompt from someone, see others on your dash reblogging prompts, if people reblog that prompt post from you? Send them asks! Alternatively, donât wait for prompts, just send asks, comments, or chats saying hello and things you notice or like about their blog/character/posts they make. Try to form connections with people you think are genuinely interesting and might be fun to talk with. Social media should be, well, social.
BUT respect boundaries, too. Donât try sarcasm or jokes with people you donât actually know, it tends to go over poorly. Unless someoneâs specifically posting a naughty meme/prompt, keep stuff you others send clean and polite, especially if itâs unsolicited and youâre not already friends (doubly so if you donât know how old they are IRL, there are laws you do not want to break). Respect if people arenât open to random asks or chatting with new followers, or say ânoâ to RP, and know itâs not personal--itâs just what they have time, energy, and emotional/mental capacity for. Donât give up on other people, though. This stuff can take time and effort to find those you click with.
Respect and communication with RP partners is pretty key.
Do curate your feeds and donât be afraid to unfollow/mute/block folks, either. Iâm selective in who I follow and remove as needed, too, for my own mental health. I miss so much of the discourse and drama and thatâs fine by me. Also it costs nothing to not step in on a lot of the drama when it does pass in sight.
Profiles I have static RP profile pages for my girls here on Tumblr (and a lot of other static links and pages, but Iâm weird about organizing like that). This way, if people want to write with me, send me prompts, if I sent them prompts, or they want to otherwise interact with my characters, the information is handily available. For some folks, this makes all the difference in who they choose to interact with: how easily can they find even basic info about your OC?
Some people make Carrds. Some folks have gdoc links, or use Dreamwidth, etc. Just keep the links in the blogâs sidebar menu, and/or in the blog desc so people can see âem on mobile. There are templates out there, or you can make your own. Feel free to snag mine if youâd like. A lot of times people also copy their profiles to rebloggable posts when looking for RP contacts. Profiles are a good way to let folks know just the at-a-glance basics about your character(s).
I picked a simple theme with a simple layout that makes it easy to add and show off links. I put them in the blog desc to make them easy to find on mobile, too.
[Images: links from my blog sidebar menu showing how over organized I am]
RP, Stories, Lore Post some stories or RP logs (with permission of others involved) or even just random little blurbs and headcanons, as well as any screenshots, art, aesthetic posts for your OCs. Have something of interest to show for your character, too, so some of those folks your interacting with have something of their own to see and ask about!
If possible, try some light RP with friends and FC Mates who are amenable. Go to events, even if just to lurk at first. When you do get up the nerve to talk to people, donât try to throw a characterâs entire backstory at them, or try to steal the limelight--RP is collaboration, back and forth, and a lot like real conversation. Maybe come up with little light things to talk about if asked; a recent adventuring job, a silly shopping incident, etc. They can break the ice or just give you something to reply with for a few minutes.
Lore Compliance is Variable. Some people really want lore compliance, others are OK bending it here and there, while still others throw it out the window entirely. If you want to be super lore compliant...read. Thereâs a LOT of information, in game and out, for finding lore; from official publications and website material, to tools like Garland Tools site, to compilation blogs like @mirkemenagerie.
Note whatâs important for your concept. Narrow it down. Characters arenât going to know or be or do everything, so only worry about whatâs necessary for the base idea. And be flexible; itâs SEâs sandbox, we just play in it, and they can change things any time. They usually do it in the guise of characters not knowing/having all the correct information, at least, but also some places just donât exist in game yet so we donât have info.
Iâm unspecific about a lot of elements of Aerynâs childhood, for instance, other than âtraveling merchants near Thavnair.â I donât have to be super specific. I can keep most details vague, and focus on her family and those relationships.
Dark, as my first character, has a fairly simple backstory that Iâve expanded on and adjusted over time as I learned and came up with new info. I also bet no one remembers I originally said Dark was from the North Shroud. Iâve changed things (now from East Shroud, due to the proximity to Gyr Abania and its Hellsguards) as I learned more about the world and my character. You donât want to change things willy-nilly, but sometimes being flexible and smoothing down some rough edges and making small changes can be fine, especially as one gets more lore over time.
Iyna has a pretty detailed backstory, that came from a basic idea, and checking dates in the pre-Calamity timeline. I based her being taken and trained the way she was not only on what info we have about Garlemaldâs imperial practices with conquered provinces, but borrowed a bit from real life and the re-education schools many Native Americans were forced into (though I havenât gone into detail on that yet, either). I tied the turning point in Iynaâs life to a major event that wasnât the Calamity, and have left plenty of space in between for me to fill in as time goes on and I learn more about her and the world.
The world isnât static, and is bigger and more diverse than what can be shown in the game. Thereâs space in the margins for plenty of weird stuff and contradictions or unusual cases. So read up on what you can, ask questions, and then find where in those spaces your OC fits. Then, find people who enjoy similar tastes in lore compliance (or non-compliance), and who enjoy playing with you and your OCs, and not worrying about the rest. Canât please everyone, nor get along with everyone, so donât try; just find what works for you, and who works with you, and donât police anyone elseâs pretendy fun times, either.
Thereâs no magic answer on the ârightâ amount of lore compliance, or how to quickly and easily find RP partners or break into the broader RP community.
I hope this helps at least a little bit! Good luck in finding your niche for RP, and maybe Iâll see you sometime at an event :)

aaand because I canât stop thinking about it iâve written down my ranking of post-finale deancas scenarios including a non-exhaustive list of pros and cons for each. read on at your own discretion.
1st place: Deancas open up the new Roadhouse. My personal favorite because, again, Deanâs canon dream. I think Dean would LOVE running his own bar and playing host and serving people food and drinks is basically his love language. Cas isnât as into the bar vibe specifically but he enjoys seeing people come and go and getting to know the locals who come by and just being with Dean. They get to stay connected to the hunting world without being actual hunters which is probably the perfect win win situation for them.
Other Pros of the Bar scenario (iâve thought about this a lot): Claire and Kaia come by increasingly often to visit until eventually Claire basically works part-time at the Roadhouse when sheâs not off hunting and Dean starts only semi-ironically calling it the âfamily business.â Claire puts up pride flag stickers on the front door and Dean makes a thing of it at first but then warms up to the idea. People start catching on and now local queer people will come from several towns over to visit the bar because there arenât exactly that many queer friendly spaces in their corner of Kansas. Then itâs pride month and Claire and Kaia secretly update the barâs online info to explicitly draw in queer customers and on the evening of the nearest pride march the bar is PACKED with all the local gays and Cas has the pop music blaring and he will NOT let Dean change it but itâs ok because Deanâs made friends with a drag queen whoâs a professional comedian and now theyâre comparing calendars to see when she might be able to come do a set at the Roadhouse and basically their bar is now a gay bar. âLGBT friendlyâ, Dean insists, because 1. heâs not gay and 2. he still caters to the local straights and the hunters. but now hunters come in and end up sitting 2 stools away from a flamboyant!gay and some are slightly weirded out but most donât care at all and all of them end up making some kind of comment about how theyâd heard about Dean Winchester and his angel... guess itâs true huh? And Dean shoots them a cocky grin and says âyepâ but he still holds to the rule that pop music is only allowed on tuesdays and thursdays and maybe very late at night on the weekends when everybodyâs drunk and dancing. The Roadhouse is a second home to Dean and itâs the perfect mix of middle american dive, hunterâs hangout and lgbt space, and thatâs literally DEAN so itâs perfect and he gets to work with his family by his side and be a part of a community (or several) and he feels useful and happy.
Cons of the Bar scenario: Doesnât work great with having a small child or hobbies. very long hours and unusual work schedule. would encourage Deanâs drinking habit. I.e. it might be more intense than some alternatives (unless the bar is more cafe/diner during the day and Claire/Kaia/whatever other youngins can mind the place on their own if deancas arenât in and the bar is located quite close to their house to they can come and go).
Overall works pretty well for a more active/energetic take on deancasâs lives post-finale. 8/10
2nd place: Mix of mechanic!Dean and retired!deancas. Deanâs never had a proper job before or much of a social circle who arenât hunters, so I find it hard to imagine Dean working at an autoshop and playing mr. normie with his coworkers. Same with Cas and a regular job.
What I can imagine, however, is Dean having his own small business where he fixes up old cars (for like, vintage car enthusiasts). It starts as a hobby but then he realizes people would pay him to do it so now itâs a business. Deancas obviously have a a house on a big plot of land near the woods and a lakeside, so thereâs plenty of outdoor space for him to set up a small shop and most of his customers call ahead so he doesnât have people just coming in anyway. The work is not quite enough to pay all the bills but again, Charlieâs magic credit card, so who cares. Cas gardens and beekeeps and occasionally sells the extras at the local farmerâs market. Dean cooks and fishes and uses Casâs ingredients whenever possible. They spend their days on their own property, doing their hobbies on their own time and making enough money from them that they donât feel useless and still have plenty of time left to get over-involved in Jackâs pta. Itâs a very calm, contented life. the millennial hipster dream, fulfilled by two 40-some year old dads.
Pros: deancas getting to spend their days doing what they love, being ridiculously domestic and married (even if theyâre not officially married), both being absolute malewives in their own ways and itâs disgustingly sweet.
Cons: this scenario doesnât have quite as much excitement and opportunity for shenanigans as the bar scenario. Less connection to a community, more living like hermits. Dean might appreciate the more social atmosphere of a bar. Cas might be equally happy either way, but heâd probably like having Claire help them out at the bar so thatâs a plus for him.
Overall a good scenario for a more placid semi-retired life. 7/10
3rd place: a bait and switch. Cas is the one who ends up still having something you could call a âjobâ, Dean is the househusband. It starts with deancas still helping saileen with HOL (hunters of letters) stuff but eventually Dean is very decided that he wants out now that things are in good hands. Cas agrees with him but still consults with the hol network since heâs got all that lore knowledge. Dean very occasionally helps with research/strategy for a hunt but thatâs IT no more hunting for him, and so it ends up that Cas still comes by the bunker fairly often and works from home the rest of the time on research and translations etc and Deanâs 100% amateur chef-in-training and papa bear because now nobody can look down on him for being a housewife (or nobody he gives a shit about anyway) so heâs gone all in. and whenever he comes by the bunker these days is after heâs picked up Jack from school and he comes to join their family to cook them all dinner while they finish up the work.
Pros: love me a Dean whoâs gotten over his hypermasculinity and is now comfortable with doing whatever he likes even if (sometimes specially if) that thing is considered stereotypically feminine. Itâs his big fuck you to his dad and itâs the life mary had wanted when she was young and dean is mary and therefore heâs honoring her memory when he spends his days on a bright airy kitchen making lunch for his 4 year old and waiting for his ex-soldier husband he adores to come home and doing not one bit of hunting. except dean never had to lie about his past and cut ties with his hunter family to get this. which is why this time for him it works, when it didnât for mary or sam. love that energy.
Cons: Dean is not in fact just a malewife and would probably still want some more action in his life. might feel kinda useless with Cas having a âthingâ to do when he doesnât. Cas would be perfectly happy regardless though.
Overall heartwarming and sweet but not as realistic: 6/10
4th: Disheveled-magic-shop-owner!Cas (+ Sam and Dean). Just thought of this. Cas knows his shit about spell ingredients and magical objects and supernatural weapons, probably more than even Sam. And Cas gardens. And Cas most likely enjoys pinterest and mom blogs and finds out about etsy... So Cas may or may not start growing/hoarding specific goods he knows are useful in the hunting world. at first itâs just to help HOL out but eventually Dean realizes like... we could profit off of this? And Cas eye-rolls because he doesnât care but then again he knows his shit so he sets up a poorly-designed website to sell hunting stuff. and maybe Sam goes in on it with him because Sam also knows his shit and itâs kind of cute because they work together and Dean probably does the mechanic/barkeep/househusband thing though he does help with making the special bullets and dropping off parcels at the post office and so on. And maybe eventually they open up a small magic shop where they sell their shit. And maybe the shop is next door to the Roadhouse and itâs all become âyour one-stop shop for everything a hunter might needâ (and you know the gays like their new age shit too so it all works), and the bunker isnât even far away either and all three business are interconnected, the âfamily businessâ that AU John Winchester of Hunter Corp wished heâd created.
Pros: Cas gets to do a thing heâs knowledgeable and passionate about and Deancas get to leave hunting while staying adjacent to the community. Cas as a disheveled shopkeep whoâs not particularly nice to customers but who provides them with insights and mysterious comments that make people certain he must be legit.
Cons: Cas using his knowledge of the supernatural to profit off of hunters sounds too capitalist and not very Cas-like. He would be the type to gladly give people stuff for free and methinks that Dean and Sam would feel that way too. Cas helping with HOL stuff is basically established in options 1-3 already and so is him gardening for potentially useful ingredients. He doesnât need to sell this stuff in a shop.
Overall makes sense theoretically but doesnât vibe well for me. 5/10
5th: full on retirees, doing basically the same things as no 2 except with maybe some more travelling and less caring about making money from any of it.
Pros: the âand they lived happily ever afterâ they deserve after all the shit theyâve been through.
Cons: boring. uneventful. Dean and Cas are still quite young and neitherâs had a chance at something even resembling a normal life for more than a couple of months at a time. They should get more of a middle aged married life experience before moving on to full retirement.
Overall valid but less interesting: 4/10
6th: Cas gets a job at a local library or shop, Dean is either a mechanic or a househusband. To preface, if Cas were to get a job out there in the world, my favorite would be like a magic shop or a bookshop with *unique* books. But I find that unlikely unless Cas is running his own shop (see 4th place for that). So here weâre talking about a regular normie shop.
Pros: Cas has a job he likes and feels useful in? And heâs not completely tied down to Dean all the time (though not sure that counts as a pro). More of the ânormal lifeâ vibes.
Cons: Cas working at a random bookstore or library or shop or whatever would be passably interesting but not as fulfilling or useful or fun as any of the other options.
Overall valid but not interesting or all that heartwarming. 2/10
6th: deancas donât know any life outside of hunting so they keep on doing it, except now with lower stakes than before and they go on less actual hunts.
pros: umm... consistency? they keep working closely with saileen and the new hunters who start coming by/moving into the bunker.
cons: everything. Deanâs wanted out and he should get it. Cas literally died several times over and he should get to experience a human life with the man he loves and not just do more dangerous shit.
Overall a terrible idea. 1/10 (because 0/10 would be the Cas never comes back and Dean dies and goes to heaven scenario)

DIGIMON ADVENTURE: LAST EVOLUTION KIZUNA
Trailer Analysis & Thoughts
Because whatâs the point of having a new trailer if not to overanalyze it?
First impressions
The comparison between this and the first few trailers and the approach for tri. could not be more stark. Kizuna puts all the cards on the table up front and gives us fans exactly what we want: great visuals, iconic music, and the main gist of story & themes (not an international release date, though).
The comparisons to tri. are inevitable at any point in the lead up and during the new movie. Please donât take any of this as a ânegative criticismâ of tri, a show I obviously adored. But I want this to be better than tri.Â
The feeling I get is that Kizuna is learning the right lessons from tri. â the good parts, of course, but also learn from what it did less well. So Iâm really thankful that we have Hiromi Seki and some of the original staff on board and hopefully doing a great job. Tri.âs preference mystery and challenging, hermetic storytelling seems to be squarely thrown out in favor of a more traditional, fan-centered, uncomplicated approach. The fandom reactions to the trailer are overwhelmingly positive, so it was probably a good decision.
Visuals/Music
The PV shows once again that people shouldnât panic about concept art. The characters look beautiful, age appropriate and even well-dressed!
The animation and look of the movie looks stunning but, again, this doesnât mean we should raise our expectations too much. tri. too had lovely visuals and battle sequences and then it had parts that were simply not animated at all.
Iâm glad theyâre using the original version of Butter-Fly rather than another posthumous remix or special edition. Wada should be remembered, yes, but not in an exploitative way.
CharactersÂ
The trailer starts by actually setting up the characters and where they are at the start of this story.
Taichi rushing to university
Yamato looking pretty while being angsty over food
Sora determinedly doing Ikebana
Dr Jou at work saving lives
Mimi working hard on her business
Takeru and Hikari hanging out like the carefree students (could it be â gasp! âa date?!)
Daisuke, Miyako, Iori, and Ken alive and well, with actual faces and lines.
âYoung Genius Menoaâ makes her introduction, and unlike the introductions of Meiko, Maki and Diago (RIP - gone but not forgotten), this time the donât have to speculate who she could be, since they actually tell us. I appreciate not having to go through another round of âWhich previously seen character could she be?â.Â
Group dynamics seem interesting, by the way...
Half the Adventure team doesnât seem to be involved in Digimon business and it seems like they never see each other.
The 02 team, by contrast, sticks together (itâs almost like theyâre actual best friends!)
Takeru and Hikari have apparently been excluded from the 02 squad, which given what happened in tri. is probably fair
The mysterious antagonist is also introduced... and named!
EOSMON, a Queen Bee digimon who steals the consciousness of adult children.Â
Why a bee? IDK. But for once the story doesnât seem to involve the End of the Worlds. Considering the last time the Chosen were fighting on three fronts representing supernatural forces and divine beings, a new, all-powerful Final Boss almost feels refreshing (never dismiss Vamdemon, though!).
Story
The trailer also nicely establishes the main plot of the movie, which has already been descried in detail on the official website:
Eosmon is stealing the consciousness of adult chosen children, including some of our main characters.
The bond between the Chosen and the Digimon is at risk of disappearing as they grow up.
Their new digivice has a countdown, indicating the number of evolutions they have left before the bond disappears.
Taichi and Yamato decide to fight despite of this risk.
Two new mysterious evolutions appear!
At first glance, this seems a genius idea:
It provides an organic reason to remove characters from the chessboard (leaving Taichi and Yamato as protagonists);
It automatically raises the stakes for Taichi and Yamato, since we can bet Eosmon got to their siblings, loved ones, and friends â and the only way of saving them is by making a choice to sacrificing their bond with their partners;
They get to introduce a new kind of special evolution thatâs stronger than Omegamon, and makes sure Taichi and Yamato remain the strongest members of the team. (Someone has suggested they will âfuseâ with their digimon, like in Tamers, and sounds great).
Note:
The part about the bond between the Digimon being threatened by adulthood could the reason why Kakudou balked out. It looks like the kind of tiny lore-related detail that would contradict nothing concrete in canon, except Kakudouâs own vision of the universe and its rules. As of now, I donât see any signs for a significant departure from the previous shows, as people speculated at the time.Â
Themes
Yamatoâs lines and other points of the trailer reveal the movie will tackle familiar topics at the start of any Adventure story:
the Chosen Children canât be at peace for too long
the kids have the habit of growing apart slowly whenever they arenât engaged in saving the world
how does the role of a Chosen Child evolve when he or she stops being a child?
the need to decide when and why you are fighting
how humans adapt to digimon living among them
Presumably, at this point in time digimon should be public knowledge, the number of chosen should be rising, and digimon are coexisting in the real world at this time. We are in a fast track towards the epilogue world, so the implications this new status quo has, how the Chosen Children around the world live, the politics of a new world with digimon... all would be very intriguing.Â
For many years, people have wondered if there are any biological/spiritual reasons why digimon are partnered with children, how adult partnerships could work, and whether itâs even possible to be a âChosen Adultâ (this is why keeping the translation DIgiDestined is a bad choice.) tri. already explored the psychological tensions caused by the increasing gap between the maturing chosen and their eternally childlike partners, and how traumatic it can be for an adult who stops being a chosen child and having a digimon partner by their side. It should be interesting to find out if thereâs an actual in-universe mechanism or rule that favours pure-hearted children over complicated adults, leading to an inevitable situation of separation and of being an âexâ Chosen.Â
It should also be interesting if the children themselves have different positions towards their role / the DW â some of them might be very happy to lead normal lives, while others need to keep that connection to the DW and want to keep fighting for it.
Questions Raised:
A possible downside of this trailer is that it doesnât leave much to the imagination when it comes to what will happen in the movie. Sure, there may be a huge twist. But plot armor and the Epilogue ensure the kids will win at the end and find a way to preserve their partners even as they become adults. Not complaining: after tri., I would welcome a more traditional story.
Still, some things made me curious:
What is the origin of Eosmon?
What are the new evolutions? How will they get them? According to her bio, Menoa âmakes references to relationships between humans and Digimon nobodyâs heard ofâ â will she be the one to get them there?Â
Will the events of tri. play into this movie at all?
What will the shorts add to the movie, especially for characters who donât get much screen time?Â
Will a digimon story featuring adults finally dare to touch romantic relationships?
Will we get special cameos?
What will we learn about the charactersâ path to their Epilogue endgames?
Will we get any Epilogue hints?
Will this truly be the last Adventure story? Can anyone believe that?
I just hope Western fans can get answers sooner rather than later.

Warhammer Paper
I wrote this for a history class on Warhammer Fantasy, some people have asked me for it so here you goÂ
Neither Holy nor Roman nor an Empire:Â Warhammer Fantasyâs Imagination of the Empire
A note on terminology. Warhammer is the larger brand that all of the following games fall under, with a specific aesthetic, culture, and identity in the larger fantasy space. The property is divided into two types of games, and two âsettingsâ. Warhammer Battle, a wargame, which players take armies of miniatures. Warhammer Roleplay, is a table-top roleplaying game ala Dungeons and Dragons set in the Warhammer world. These games are split between two settings, an imagined world where the action of the games are supposed to take place, so the battles between the Ogre and Daemon armies are given a context within the world of the fantasy. The settings include the original Warhammer Fantasy, and it's far more popular science fiction equivalent Warhammer 40000 (usually known as 40k). This work will look primarily at Warhammer Fantasy and not 40K, specifically its depiction of the Holy ROman Empire in its fantastical equivalent, the Empire of Man. Warhammer Fantasy draws heavily upon early modern history for inspiration, down to its own world map. Â
The world of Warhammer Fantasy, in contrast to works like as Lord of the Rings, draws primarily upon historical influences to populate its world. The Kingdom of Bretonnia is obviously inspired by France, the Empire of Cathay and Nippon arenât even hiding that they are based on China and Japan. And the core part of the setting where most of the action is set, is the Empire of Man, inspired by the Holy Roman Empire, with its Emperor elected by a series of Elector-Counts ruling over a deepy decentralized state. While Warhammer Fantasy is a somewhat comedic game, it is worth studying how it depicts the Holy Roman Empire, because that is how much of its Anglophile audience is going to first learn about its real life equivalent.Â
The subject of this paper is Warhammer Fantasy (WF), the series that started the Warhammer franchise. This setting encompasses both the games of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFR) and Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB), and I will be using the books from those games interchangeably because, while they are different games, the setting and the lore is the same,.  Warhammer Fantasy is set in âThe Old Worldâ, a fantasy world under constant threat by supernatural forces. While the world is populated by a variety of fantasy creatures like Ogres, Dwarves and Elves under threats of âDaemonsâ, the main focus of the world are the human kingdoms, roughly modelled after real life historical societies. While the entire world is loosely sketched out, most of the action of the game is set in âThe Empire of Manâ, located in the middle of a fantastic version of early modern Europe.
The franchise of Warhammer is wargaming, where player enact battles with an army of miniatures on a board. These miniatures must be purchased from Games Workshop and prices can run as high as over $100 dollars for a monster miniature, meaning the game is limited to an affluent fanbase.  Players donât simply buy the minaturse, they also paint them, the miniatures when purchased as black and white pewter figurines which the player paints with brushes and paints also provided by Games Workshop. The games website has recommended colors for each type of figure but players may customize their mainatures as they choose, giving players a personal connection to their own collection. While players may purchase as many miniature as they wish, officially each set of minaturse is organized into different âarmiesâ. Each army has a theme and unique design, and units from a particular army is only supposed to work within its own army. So for example, the High Elf Army are the only units who employ High Elf Mages. The Knights of Bretonnia cannot be used in the armies of the Empire. These armies each have a unique play style and most players can only afford to play with a few armies, generally leading to players committing to a single army they identify with. In addition to buying miniatures and paints, players must also buy the rules for play. In addition to the general rule book must be bought by all the players, each specific army also has a special rule book known as a codex. The codex does not only contain the specific rules for each army but also the story line, character descriptions and society of each faction. For example the empire codex contains not only the specific rules for each unit but also the personalities of the individual important figures, the history and culture of the empire and the character of the empire as as a whole, complete with pictures. Â
In game design terminology, the is the divide between what is called mechanics and story (or fluff). Mechanics covers the actual game play such as how much damage each each unit deals and what special attacks they have, while the story covers the specific character of each unit. Warhammer Fantasy was started in 1983 and has gone through 8 editions until the game eventually ended in 2010. The first two editions were actually nothing but armies with no story with them at all beyond a few sentence, it wasnât until third edition came about in 1987 that the actual setting was created and the Empire of Man existed as anything more than âThe human factionâ.  And from every edition since third, new codex have come with update the story, introduce new factions, or change the state of the world. Â
The variant game Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay ues entirely different mechanics but the same story.  The experience of a tabletop game, modelled off Dungeons and Dragons, a form of interactive storytelling, consisting of several players sitting around a table. One player is called the Game Master (GM) who creates the story and maintains the rules. Each of the other players creates a single character who they control. Each character has a set of powers and the characters can take actions which are determined by dice rolls. So if one players wants theri character to attack a goblin, they roll dice to see if he is successful.  The characters work together to try to overcome the challenges the GM throws at them. Rather than vast battles, the mechanics of roleplay tends to have a greater emphasis on character interaction, the day to day living of the characters, and small scale combat. So mechanics exist not only for combat but also for socializing, stealth, and crafting objects, and these rules are laid out in large hard copies called Gamebooks. For the game to be played one person in the groups must have the Core Rulebook, but supplementary rulebooks exist covering other aspects of the world and the game. Each rule book contains both mechanics and story, however the story in these games is far more in depth and detailed than the Wargaming counterpart. For example, the primary source for this paper is Heirs of Sigmar, a supplement book designed to flesh out the culture and history of Empire. It contains some specific rules, but the vast majority of the book is simply story, which does not contradict the story of the Wargame. Thus both games share the same story even as their mechanics are entirely different.  The fact that two games with entirely different mechanics can have the same story shows that the mechanics donât contribute to the story, which is known in ludology as âLudonarrative dissonanceâ.  Â
Ludonarrative means âplay narrativeâ and refers to when a gameâs narrative is expressed via its play. To use an example from video games, in acclaimed horror game Silent Hill 2, the ending of the game changes depending on how the player acts in game. Should the player use reckless tactics, rarely heal, and avoid stealth options, then the protagonist, James Sunderland, will commit suicide at the end of the game. If the player is cautions and explores the area, they will leave the town to make a new life. Ludonarrative dissonance is when the narrative of the play is in direct contrast to the narrative of the story itself. In both games, the mechanics of Warhammer fantasy are largely disconnected from its themes and story. All this to say, this essay will not be looking at the actual gameplay or mechanics, which have very little to do with its understanding of the empire. The focus of this essay will be solely on the story content provided in the game books, thus little engagement will be made with ludology of the game, which could be the subject for a future paper. As this franchise has been around since 1987, I will be drawing primarily upon the WFR book Heirs of Sigmar a guide to the Empire, and the 6th, 7th, and 8th Empire codexes, which go into the most detail about story rather than rules.   Â
The Empire is 2532 years old when the book is set, and its history is told through a series of epochs. Humanity lives as primitive tribesmen until they discover the gift of iron, which leads to a time of barbarism and war. This ends only when a great warrior, Sigmar, unifies them though faith in his wolf god,and force of arms. Sigmar ruled wisely and justly, setting up most of the institutions of the later empire, and upon his retirement, the 12 great Counts instituted the Elector system. For a thousand years the empire goes through a prosperous golden age, expanding across the continent and becoming the greatest military force in human history, referred too as âThe Birth of Nationsâ. This time of wonder ends with the age of decadence, as the upper classes gave up their concerns for the state to enjoy affairs, fine foods, and frivolous spending (much of it on art and fashion).  Emperor Ludgiw II Honenbach âThe Fatâ makes his halfling cook an Elector, and the cult of Sigmar into the official state religion of the empire before âdied in bad a short while later-smothered to death by his own neck fatâ. This period of luxury eventually ends with a great plague, and civil war, Boris Hohenbach âthe Incompetentâ, is so corrupt he effectively cedes all control to the feudal lords rather than the Empire. It is the decentralization of the empire that marks its decline, known as the âTime of Judgementâ. It wasnât until the election of the martial Emperor Mandred I, whose reign brought stability if not prosperity to the realm, and his even more marshal successor Magnus who unified the Empire through âsheer force of will and beliefâ that this time of instability came to an end.. Â
The games presentation of history is standard for the fantasy genre, and is both simplistic and rather conservative.  Every event in the Empireâs history has a single cause, whole centuries can be summed up with rough generalization, and history is moved by individual men. And it is always men, during the first 1750 years of history only 3 women are mentioned, a nameless priestess to the goddess of diplomacy, a frivolous vain noblewoman, and a failed usurper, each with half a sentence of description.  The lack of female representation is a consistent pattern across the Warhammer franchise. The good rulers are universally military commanders whose reigns last decades, as prosperous as they are vague. The Empire has an astronomical time frame but largely does not change except in the way of technology, it is always Germanic, decentralized, highly militant, and worshiping the same gods. The Empire is largely timeless, only changing when an in-game event requires it. Â
The effect is a state that is largely timeless, an eternal stereotype that simply exists with only slight variations, a deterministic view of society that fits many fantasy settings. Fantasy tends to imagine the past as one of stasis, the states that exist have done so for a long time and will continue to do so unless something truly cataclysmic occurs. Within that existence, they will stay largely the same across there history, if changes occur it will be due to a specific ruler or a major event. Fantasy imagines time as a stalled machine, awaiting a radical push to make it move slightly ahead before stalling out. If fantasy serves as one introduction to historical societies, it can give the impression that the Empire was a static entity, existing for centuries largely unchanged. This can very easily move into essentialism, one can simply dismiss the empire as a thousand years of stagnation and its people effectively the same. We see this essentialist approach later when the book describes the specific provinces, all of which have been largely the same for 2500 years, as having a specific character that defines them, even at some point implying it is due to bloodline. Â
At their worst, Nordlanders are churlish, uncouth, and thoughtless speakers. Even the merchants of Nordland have this blunt approach, though they seem to be fine with double dealing. Indeed, they have found that shouting the final price of something loudly and repeatedly has a profound effect upon merchants used to the subtleties of barter and negotiation. Many provinces point out that this is because of their mongrel Was Jutone, Teutogen, and Norscan bloodlines. This mixed heritage has been a source of Nordlander shame. Modern Imperials look on Norscans with a mixture of admiration and fear, seeing them both as powerful warriors and wild, uncivilised barbarians, not to be trusted around oneâs daughters or sheep. A popular Imperial saying runs âCharacter is in the blood,â meaning that ancestry determines character. Thus Nordlanders, though of the Empire, are often regarded as ânot quite one of us,â rougher and more uncouth even than the wild and hairy Middenlanders.
It effectively buys into primordialist narratives of human society, that when human beings first emerged they have characteristics that stay with them across all of time, like French Nationalist narratives claiming the Gauls and modern French share similar values and disposition. This is a common trope in fantasy, but by tying it to a real life historical entity, it gives the impression that this has some relation to German history. Â
As to what the Empireâs essential qualities are, Warhammer seems to been written with Voltaireâs misunderstood condemnation in mind. The Empire is deeply incompetent, disorganized, corrupt, and maddingly complicated. As Warhammer Fantasy was originally a comedy game, the section on the political structure of the empire was originally presented as a joke at the expense of the Empire. Â
But while the rhetoric around the empire is mocking contempt for its decentralization and overlapping spheres of influence, the Empire of Man in fact is not that complicated. While it is a decentralized feudal state with an elected monarch, and overlapping legal systems, it is actually less complicated than the real Holy Roman Empire. The Vatican is located within the Empire, the royal family has no international element to it, there is no equivalent to the Spanish Habsburgs or the American Colonies, no crownlands or Greater Hungary, and of course the empire has one language. In fact, the Holy Empire seems far more like a unified Nation-State than its real life counterpart.. One of the most notable changes made is that it doesnât have an equivalent to the Hapsburgs, the Emperor is simply elected from among the Electors rather than from an Imperial family, and so one of the greatest elements of internationality has been removed. The fact that the empire is so much more cohesive and yet is mocked by its creators for its instability indicates just how much the ide of the nation-state has become normalized that a state not being utterly centralized is seen as strange.
Where this simplification and disinterest in the empire gets interesting is its approach to nationality or rather lack of one, as the Holy Empire is entirely German. The word German never appears in the books of course (though the term Teutonic certainly does) but the culture of the Empire is clearly German, the Emperor is named Karl Franz, its greatest warrior is named Lugwig Schwarzhelm, and the Reiksmarshal is named Kurt Helborg. The capital city is Altdorf (Vienna), and one of its famed military units are known as the Landsknecht. However the empire has no stand in for Hungary, Bohemia, Slovenian, Slovakia, or Poland, the culture is almost entirely German. The only exception is the semi-independent province of Sylvania, which is loosely based on Romania, though its depiction owes more to Bram Stoker than historical reality, ruled as it is by the vampire counts, and clearly based on Transylvania but with a Romanian cultural influence. Â
This Germanization shouldnât be surprising considering that Games Workshop is a British company whose audience is overwhelmingly American and Canadian. None of the major designers are historians or have any expertise in the region nor do any of them mention any central European heritage. The Anglo-American world and the fantasy genre is not particularly well informed about Eastern/Central Europe, to the point that The Witcher, a Polish inspired fantasy game was released, it was praised for bringing attention to an unappreciated region. Germany is far more familiar, as is Romania thanks to Dracula, but as there are no major fantasy works featuring any of the other components of the Holy Roman Empire. Thus the Empire becomes a Germanic one, simply decentralized, with no Slavic, Magyar or Ottoman cultural influences to be found within its defined borders. This general ignorance of the region also explains the rather reductive embrace of Western dismissals of the Holy Roman Empire. In fact compared to most fantasy narratives, Warhammer is almost orientalist in its approach to German culture, the book presents German culture as exotic and strange, an the art work empathises the Gothic architecture and black armor much like similar fantasy exoticizes fantastical depictions of Japan. Â
Ironically, this ignorance of the region means that the Empire avoids many of most common troubled narratives of the empire, by reimagining the Empire as fully German, it reject a Nationalist critique of the Empire. For all its faults, the Empire isnât oppressing ethnic groups yearning to be free, nor do any of its weaknesses come from diversity or lack of linguistic unity. Though the Empire slogan is âLet Us Take Strength From our Diversityâ In a similar vein, Warhammer also unintentionally rejects the Clash of Civilization narrative, by the lack of an Ottoman presence. While there is a fantasy Islamic empire (The Araby Caliphate) it is both Arabic and largely irrelevant to the events of the main story. While the Empire does claim legitimacy by being the protectors of the true faith and the defenders of civilization, itâs rival are inhuman Daemons rather an exoticized oriental potentate. In fact while the empire considers itself the supreme cultural power, they do not seem particularly hostile towards any of their humans neighbours, nor do they have an enmity towards the Islamic inspired nations.
In fact the Empireâs relationship to religion is complicated. Like most fantasy works, the state religion has the aesthetic, organization, and place in society as the Catholic Church, with grand cathedrals and hierarchy of priests, complete with its own Pope, the Grand Theogonist. However the actual faith is polytheistic, with a pantheon of deities each of whom governs an aspect of reality. Its chief god used to be the wolf god Ulric, whose chosen Sigmar founded the empire, but the Cult of Sigmar has since become the state sect of the Empire. These gods exist in opposition to the Chaos Gods, whose Daemonic armies serve as the primary antagonists of the setting.  Each god has its own organized church, but all of them are ultimately lead by the Cult of Sigmar, whose main job seems to be the maintenance of the inquisition. In Warhammer, the Inquisition, employs Witch Hunters and Templars in order to hunt down renegade spell casters and worshipers of Chaos, who purged via fire. In the world of Warhammer, the world is under attack by the forces of Chaos, divine cosmic forces of destruction and corruption. While they openly invade the empire from the north with their great Daemon armies, within the empire the lords of Chaos attempt to spread their influence through Chaos Cults. Individuals join for magical power and pledge their souls to Daemon overlords, eventually twisting their minds and body into combinations, and are instructed to try to overthrow the empire. The main obstacle to these cults are the inquisition, who can hunt down these secretive groups and destroy them through fire.  The game evokes the imagery of the inquisition and witch hunts, but in this fantastical setting, the actions of the church are largely justified as chaos cults are legitimately threaten the world. In the universe of Warhammer, torture, mass execution and the constant repression of the citizenry is shown to be a justified necessary evil to prevent the empire from falling to chaos. Since Chaos often spreads through the reading of forbidden tombs and hedonistic âpleasure cultsâ, sexual puritanism and limiting freedom of information are shown to be entirely justified.  Effectively Warhammer has created a world where the Inquisition isnât not just necessarily but just in its actions, while doing most of the same activities as its real life counterpart. Â
This approach towards religion is common in fantasy, likely do to wanting to mix the excitement of Greek mythology with the familiar structures of Catholicism, or simply because the norms of Christianity are so normal to the writers that they struggle to imagine religion differently. For example, in Dungeons and Dragons, the pantheon of gods who exist within the world are clearly polytheistic in nature, however each god has a very Catholic inspired temple with an organized church hierarchy, using the imagery of christianity in a non Christian context. With the Inquisition hunting down and destroying hidden heretics within the empire, the gameâs trappings are mimicking that of the Protestant reformation, but the role of Protestants is being played by Chaos Cultists, and the Inquisition is actually hunting witches. This means that the Empire losses much of its ideological nuances, one is left with the impression that faith in the empire is mostly a practical tool to battle Chaos, and the church is universally made up of corrupt hypocrites or zealous fanatics.Â
The game makes a point of mocking the Holy Roman Empire for its needless complexity, but the society is reduced on every level, which makes it easier to simply dismiss. This approach extends to almost all other aspects of the Empire, almost everything within it is defined in extremely broad strokes without much attention to detail. The Empire has a strict class system, with an aristocracy characterized as decadent, selfish, and vain ruling over a mass of peasants who are shown as ignorant, superstitious and xenophobic. The history is vast but sparse on details, and tends to fall into patterns, as periods of decline are ended when a warrior emperor drives back an external invader. This approach to world building is rather typical of most fantasy, as it generally hopes to work within broad archetypes rather than specific narratives. Â
All this is only worth considering because the larger Warhammer franchise has come under much discussion regarding nationalist themes in its work, though mostly focusing on its far more popular 40k franchise. The series enduring popularity with White Natioanlist and Trump supporters has been well documented, Trumpâs official reddit page /thedonald regularly refers to âGod Emperor Trumpâ a reference to 40k universe.  The 40k universe has been accused its embrace of militarism, authoritarianism and xenophobic narratives, expressed through its protagonists being the dictatorial human supremacist âImperium of Manâ. Very little has been written about the original Warhammer Fantasy due to its relatively unpopularity compared to its spinoff, but it is worth considering from a nationalist narrative. The Empire of Manâs embrace of German culture and folklore is telling, in particular a blond warrior unifying the forest tribes to create an Empire via war. All of the good emperors are marshall, and the bad are defined as decedent and corrupt, with women confined to marginal roles. The Inquisition is shown as a necessary evil and the empire has a primordialism attitude towards the tribes that make up its ranks. A nationalist reading isnât necessarily intentional, but it is possible, though not the traditional narratives associated with Central Europe. Rather it is more likely some of the long standing conservative sentiments that have long been associated with the fantasy genre. Â
First released in 1983, Warhammer is among the oldest and most popular fantasy properties in the gaming space, and it is one of the few fantasy franchises which plays a major part in changing the pop mersculture landscape rather than being fully insulated within the fantasy sub-culture. Warhammer 40K is the most popular wargame in history and the label has more than 50 video game spinoffs, Warcraft famously was originally planned to be Warhammer game before they lost the license and made their own universe. In fact most fantasy wargames owe their legacy in some way to Warhammer, which can be found in hobby shops across Europe and North America, though Games Workshop does not own the shops directly.  It is almost impossible to be within fantasy gamer culture without at least passible familiarity with the Warhammer franchise, and so to many people, Warhammer Fantasy is their first real introduction to the Holy Roman Empire, albeit in a bastardized fantasy form. Â
In his influential 1936 essay, Beowulf: The Monsters and and the Critics, J.R.R. Tolkien lays out his understanding of the fantasy genre. At the time, Beowulf was valued primarily as a historical work and not a literary, a trend Tolkien argued against, making the argument that fantasy should be appreciated as stories within their own context rather than simply reflections of our reality. This approach is empathised in Lord of the Rings, where the emotional stakes within the confines of the fantasy universe. The reader hopes Frodo will succeed not because he represents something external to the story, but because we value the character and want what is best for him.  Tolkien, in his prelude to Fellowship of the Ring, famously said he despised allegory and didnât wish his work to be read with real life parallels. Most fantasy follows in Tolkienâs footsteps, Fantasy has long expected stories to be understood within their own context but that standard becomes confusing when real life elements are consciousnessly moved into the fantastical space. So when Warhammer Fantasy features a society obviously inspired by the Holy Roman Empire, the audience is expected to engage with the empire within the framework of its world, our investment in its success depending on our investment with its characters and setting. However we canât ignore the fact that it is obviously inspired by a real life society, and that the game is unintentionally setting the groundwork for its players engagement with the historiography surrounding the empire. And so, while it is clear that the designers didnât have any intention to make a statement about the historiography, instead using the Empire to give their game a unique aesthetic and stand apart from other fantasy properties, Warhammer does unintentionally make a statement about history. The stereotypes of the empire as incompetent and needlessly complicated, the view of history as largely static, that history is to be understood as mostly driven by great men, and that the decline of empires is inexorably tied to its embrace of luxury. The game enforces the notion of the Nation-State as normal and the Empire as abnormal for departing from said model. The game presents many institutions of the empire without contextualizing them, and doesnât acknowledge the actual complexities of the real empire. Ultimately while this is the only prominent fantasy work which asks the players to imagine things from the Empireâs perspective, it very much enforces many of the same stereotypes that Habsburg historians have been trying to escape from, while also endorsing many false views of history itself. The games understanding of history is just close enough to reality that the uninformed player might take it as fact, without realizing just how essentialist Warhammer fantasy actually is. Much more attention needs to be paid to how history is understood via fantasy, because many people get their knowledge and interest in history from fantasy, and many concepts long since debunked in history, continue to live on in fantasy uninterrupted. Â

How we know the person in the intro of Deltarune is almost certainly Gaster
This post is a summary of all the evidence that the person speaking in the âvessel creationâ portion of Deltarune, and by extension the Game Over sequence, is W.D. Gaster.
1. Connection to the Twitter
For those that donât know, on October 30th, 2018, the day before Deltarune came out, the official Undertale Twitter changed its icon and display name, and tweeted a number of cryptic tweets, which we now know to be teasing Deltarune.
As you can see, the tweets are clearly written in the same voice as the person in the intro. This is a very unique voice, so itâs extremely unlikely it would be anyone else.
This gives us a hint to who the speaker is - look at the display name. Itâs ââââââââ. If you canât tell, thatâs exactly six characters of black âcensoredâ boxes - the exact number of letters you need to spell âGasterâ.
2. References to Entry Number 17
Undertaleâs hidden âEntry Number 17â is one of the more well-known Gaster Things. But in case you donât know about it, Entry 17 is a section of text, in the form of a True Lab entry, written in Wingdings font, and only accessible by editing the gameâs files. Here is a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jfHh88p5hk
Translated from Wingdings into plain English, it reads:
ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN
DARK
DARKER
YET DARKER
THE DARKNESS KEEPS GROWING
THE SHADOWS CUTTING DEEPER
PHOTON READINGS NEGATIVE
THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT
SEEMS
VERY
VERY
INTERESTING
...
WHAT DO YOU TWO THINK
Of note is the part that I have bolded. The phrase âVERY VERY INTERESTINGâ seems to be a⊠catchphrase? of Gasterâs. Itâs used in the tweets in the lead up to Deltarune to make a very clear callback to Entry 17.
In addition, another possible reference to the line is in the save menu screen of Deltarune before you clear the game. If  you donât know, the main menu is different depending on if youâve already cleared Chapter 1 once before, or if you havenât cleared it yet. If you havenât yet, the save menu will not only appear different, but the dialogue for copying and erasing save files will be different as well.
Of interest is a line of dialogue that only occurs when you delete 10 or more save files, then go to delete another one, then back out when asked if you want to âTRULY ERASE ITâ. If you do this, the text will read, âVERY INTERESTING.â
Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRnliRKGMBM
3. âmus_smileâ in Deltarune
Speaking of Entry 17, You may have noticed the creepy âmusicâ playing when it is being displayed. This piece of audio is titled âmus_smileâ in the files. Interestingly, it appears in Deltarune not once, but twice.
The first is when you try to make a phone call while in the dark world. Any game music that was playing will stop, and instead âmus_smileâ will play, and the narration says that the cell phone âdoesnât seem to be workingâ. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7FuP_AkbRU
The second is, of all places, in Hometown during the epilogue. Specifically, when youâre near the bunker south of town. If youâre close enough to it, a very slowed down version of âmus_smileâ will play. Video showing the sound at both original speed and sped up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPQYXiUEpPk
4. Typer values and the number â666â
This one requires a bit of explaining on how Undertale and Deltarune function. Each line of dialogue, in both Undertale in Deltarune, relies on what is called a âtyperâ value. Basically, all the information about the text - the size, the font, what sound the text blips make - are all stored in this âtyperâ value. Usually, each character has a specific typer value associated with them, sometimes several. When a character says a line of dialogue, the game uses this typer value to determine how the text will appear.
And, again, we return to Entry 17.
You probably know that Gaster is heavily associated with sixes. In Undertale, his unused battle stats are all sixes - for example, his attack and defense are both â66666â. The âfunâ value needed to encounter the âmysterymanâ, commonly believed to be Gaster, is 66, and the fun values for all of the âGaster followersâ are in the 60s as well.
You may have guessed it by now - The typer value used for Entry 17 is â666â. This is definitely intentional, as the highest typer value below that is â111âł.
So, then, whatâs typer value â666â used for in Deltarune?
Why, itâs the intro sequence. Interesting. (Except the âNo one can choose who they are in this worldâ bit - that part uses typer value â2â, which could provide further evidence that itâs a different person speaking.)
Similarly, typer value â667â is used for the Game Over sequence.
This, in combination with âVERY VERY INTERESTINGâ, seems to make it very clear that the speaker in Entry 17 and the mysterious speaker in the âvessel creationâ part of Deltarune are the same person. Although you need knowledge of the gameâs files to find this particular piece of evidence, you also need that to find Entry 17, which is a huge part of the Gaster Loreâą.
5. What the âvessel creationâ is actually called in the files
In Deltaruneâs files, the âvessel creationâ sequence is referred to as âGONERMAKERâ.
This is significant, because the term âGonerâ is tied to Gaster.
Gaster is pretty clearly linked with the âgrey NPCsâ in Undertale. Two of these grey NPCs are explicitly referred to as âgonerâ in the game files:
âspr_mkid_gonerâ
âspr_clam_gonerâ
The latter is the âgonerâ form of Clam Girl, who speaks of Suzy, and, in the Nintendo Switch version of Undertale, which came out less than two months before Deltaruneâs release, claimed that the time we will meet her is âfast approachingâ as she turns into her âgonerâ form. This was possibly foreshadowing Deltaruneâs release. (I say âpossiblyâ because we donât actually meet âSuzyâ in Deltarune, but âSusieâ.)
In any case, these so-called âGonersâ are almost certainly linked to Gaster in some way. We donât know exactly how, but the fact that the intro is called âGoner Makerâ is almost certainly very significant to the story.
6. The music during the âGoner Makerâ sequence, and its title
Undertale has a hidden sound test which does not actually include songs from the game, but notably, includes a song titled âGasterâs Themeâ. In the gameâs files, this song is called âmus_himâ.
And, as you can see on the bandcamp page for Deltaruneâs soundtrack... The title of the song that plays during the âGoner Makerâ sequence is âANOTHER HIMâ. In addition, the song seems to use âGasterâs Themeâ as part of the melody, as does âDarkness Fallsâ, the game over theme.
7. Hidden messages on the Deltarune website
Way before Deltarune was revealed, the website still existed. But it looked a bit different.
Luckily, we have archives on the wayback machine, so we can see what the website looked like in the past.
August 17, 2016:
http://web.archive.org/web/20160817183540/http://www.deltarune.com/
The page appears to be completely blank. However, in the top left corner there is an image, titled âhim.pngâ. when brightened, it reveals a message written in Wingdings:
It reads,
THREE HEROES APPEARED
TO BANISH THE ANGELS HEAVEN
Which, as we now know, is a quote from the Legend in Deltarune that Ralsei tells Kris and Susie.
However, there is also an archive of the link to the image itself. And it turns out this image was different at some point.
December 9, 2015:
https://web.archive.org/web/20151209013205/http://www.deltarune.com/him.png
When brightened, the image once again reveals Wingdings, this time reading:
THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT
SEEMS
VERY
VERY
INTERESTING
Which, you may remember from earlier, is a direct quote from Entry 17.
This, once again, strengthens the connection between Gaster and Deltarune.
These are all the major pieces of evidence that Gaster is speaker in the intro. Of course, we canât 100% prove it just yet. But thereâs no good reason to deny it. With so much of the evidence clearly pointing to Gaster, at this point Toby going âhaha actually it was someone else the whole timeâ would just be bad writing. And Tobyâs good at writing! I really donât think heâd pull a pointless, unnecessary âplot twistâ like that. So itâs very, very safe to say that this person is Gaster.

Cinderella Info
Full name: Cinderella Desrosiers
Species: Human
Age: 19 ( verse dependant )
Sexuality: BisexualÂ
FC(s): Lily James || Diane Kruger || Yuki ( The Cat Returns )
Bio: Cinderella wasnât born a servant. She used to have a nice and pleasant life, with a loving father and not too many worries. After her father married Lady Tremaine, Cindy thought things would get better, since now she had a mother and also two new sisters. But when her father passed away Lady Tremaine showed her true colours to Cinderella. She wasnât a mother to her, only to Anastasia and Drizella, and slowly but surely, Cindy went from daughter to servant. Years went and things havenât gotten better for poor Cinderelly.
Mistreated every day and working hard non-stop to please her step-family. But she never stopped being nice and having patience with them, she almost never breaks down in front of her step-family; but at night, after long days of work, Cinderella enjoys resting on her bed, having dinner and talking about the day with her friends, the mice and the bluebirds. Cindy never stops dreaming, hoping for a better future in her life. It may not come right away, and it will probably take time, but she believes itâs possible. After all, a dream is a wish your heart makes.
Note: Follows original film and both sequels, plus KH lore.
[ MAIN || INBOX || HEADCANONS || VISAGE || MUSINGS ]
V001: Life of Servitude
Default main verse. Cinderella is a servant to her step-family, who lives in the attic of the chateau of her family. She doesnât have much, just one pair of shoes and one type of clothes; a used bed and by change even has a mirror and a brush to use in the morning. But not everything is bad, the view of the town and the palace from up there is beautiful, but the clock in the morning gets on her nerves.
V002: Now a Princess
A princess consort/post first movie verse. She never expected anything else from that beautiful ball at the royal palace. Sure, she danced with a gentle guy, but during that magical and wonderful moment, Cinderella had no clue she was dancing with none other than the prince. And to think he looked after her the following day. Now she was no longer a dirty servant, but a princess and married; learning how to be a âproper princessâ will be difficult.
V003: Exiled but Rising from the Ashes
An alternate Cinderella 3 verse. Cindy tried, oh how hard she tried. Just when she thought her life would change forever Anastasia managed to fit her foot into the crystal slipper. After that, she did everything in her power to get into the palace and talk to the prince, to prove she was the one he danced with at the ball; but she didnât expect her step-mother to have the Fairy Godmotherâs wand, and that put her at a big disadvantage. When the guards caught her, Cinderella was forced to be exiled from the kingdom.
It was hard to take in, to accept this new life away from everything she knows. She lost a life, a horrible one, and was close to starting a new and better one. Maybe, just maybe⊠this could be the start of something new?
V004: Stroke of Heart
A KH verse. As a Princess of Heart, sheâs one of the most important people of all the worlds. Alongside the other six Princesses of Heart theyâre recognised by being people without a single trace of darkness in their hearts, After the events of being kidnapped by Maleficent, Cinderella has been very cautious wherever she goes, and with the Keyblade War getting closer and closer, she and the other princesses must stick together. Nowadays, Cinderella may no longer be an official Princess of Heart, as her light moved on to someone else.
ALTERNATE: Despite no longer being a Princess of Heart, this doesnât mean she isnât involved in the grand battle. Cindy, alongside the other princesses, has all gathered to train; turns out, the keyblade deemed them worthy to become wielders! Her keyblade is Stroke of Midnight.
EDIT ABOUT ABOVE: Some lil extra information, with this verse, if I feel like it or is requested by a mutual, I can use this new meta in rps and interactions. That is if it is desired. This is a silly AU within a verse, after all, an idea born from some friends over Discord which I got hooked on.
V005: A Modern Twist
A modern verse. All Cinderella wanted for so long is to have enough money to move out of the house and start studying in college. But her step-mother did everything to keep her still, being a simple assistant/servant for Lady Tremaine, who is the head of a big and important company. Organising meetings, getting her coffee... just about anything Cindy has to do to please her step-mother, and nothing ever makes her happy.
It wasnât until one day that she finally moved out, with the help of her godmother who had returned from travelling around the world. They found a stable place for her, where the rest wasnât cheap but neither too pricey. Plus, Cinderella was lucky enough to find a job.
NOTE: Age can range from young adult to late twenties.
V006: Royally Kind Online
A Wreck-it Ralph 2 verse, in which Cinderella is one of the official Disney Princesses who live inside the âOh My Disneyâ website, meeting fans every day and hanging out with her fellow princesses and friends, as well as the characters from other Disney properties and acquisitions.
V007: Enduring in Insomnia
A Final Fantasy XV verse. Born in Insomnia, capital of the kingdom of Lucis, Cinderella at first had a modest and content life with her father. Everything changed, however, after he got married again to a woman named Agatha Tremaine. Not immediately, but shortly after their marriage the poor man passed away, leaving her alone with her new step-mother and step-sisters.
They began to treat her like a servant, not a daughter nor a sister, and never once changed their ways for years to come. Not even Cinderellaâs beloved godmother, an elderly woman â an old friend of her father â who lives next door can take custody of her, so she must endure a life of servitude. Honestly, at this rate, Cindy is grateful for being allowed to still go to school and finish her studies.
V008: Behind the Scenes
A Sing verse. Most of the information can be taken from her regular modern verse ( so you can read that and I donât have to repeat myself again here ) but now it's in the world of Sing, in which sheâs an anthro white cat!
The new job Cindy manages to get is at Buster Moonâs theatre -- she isnât much of an actress or dancer but has quite the sweet singing voice, however she prefers to stick to her cleaning duties and assisting her new boss in any way possible.
