i wasn't sure if you would read the tags i'd leave if i reblogged your reply to my ask so i decided to just send you another ask! ha! i'll bullet point them this time bc i have quite a few things to say:
1. you can definitely keep my asks public, i really don't mind :)
2. never have i ever been so excited to open an email, and that too first thing in the morning. seeing your reply, especially that little treat at the end (!!!!!!!!!), had me smiling and kicking my feet in bed. i'm, impossibly enough, even more excited for Emberclaw now.
3. having more than one narrative position in a book is certainly ambitious and one that i haven't encountered in any other book so far, but it grows on you, fast (at least it did on me), and can be an acquired taste to some who are willing to give it a chance. i think you might just be the first author who has changed my mind completely on first person narratives and i owe it to your flawless delivery, of course (i'm biased, i'll admit). also, "narrative positions" was exactly the word that wouldn't come to me in my fit of excitement while writing my last ask; it was a tiny brain-fart moment on my part when i said "pov choice" instead haha.
4. this is more of an aside really but it once took me 400 pages (of a 800+ pages) to get into a book, so imho, 50 pages isn't asking for much. fantasy novels tend to be a little demanding! also, it was my first proper foray into epic fantasy. i then went on to finish the series despite the really, really, really slow start. the slowest. i think a reader can tell when the wait will be worth it though, almost like a gut feeling.
5. multi-pov is another polarizing aspect of books, but then again, it can be enjoyed if done well. i once read a book with 14 povs and gave it 5 stars. it wasn't even a fantasy novel, but a contemporary one! in comparison, your book with its 4 povs is pretty tame, and i think, even the norm for epic/high fantasy novels. personally, i enjoy being in the head of different characters! especially when you've got a big cast of them. also, that surprise 5th pov toward the end took me quite by surprise!! jaw, meet floor.
6. i do have a GR account! and i certainly have plans on leaving well-deserved, glowing reviews on both the book and audio :) it's the least i can do!
7. this one is more of a suggestion to those who might find the narrative positioning a little jarring: listen to the audiobook instead; it warms you up to it much faster!
i think that just about covers it. again, i cannot say this enough, but Dragonfall would not be the story i fell absolutely in love with had you not made the narrative (ha!) choices you did. i hope more people come to appreciate and love it as much as i do, and are willing to give it the fair chance it deserves <3
much love 💖
I think I'd see the tags! I'm so out of practice with Tumblr, but I have enjoyed coming back to it as I feel in some ways I can be more authentic over here rather than the more traditional promo over on tiktok and insta. Not that I'm inauthentic elsewhere it's just...here you can be a bit more off the cuff, I think?
1. Whew!
2. Aww yay! Interacting with readers is honestly one of my favourite things. I'm so excited when I hear from someone who got what I was trying to do. Releasing art for public consumption can be excellent but also hard. Dragonfall is probably my most personal book, so it being marmite made me so self-conscious. I always think about that Don Marquis quote "Publishing a volume of verse is like dropping a rose petal down the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo." It's nice when you get the echoes back. :-)
3. I was inspired to be experimental after reading The Fifth Season, which is a masterpiece. I've heard good things about The Spear Cuts Through Water which also does cool narrative position trickery, I think. I also really love framing devices of people looking back, like in Assassin's Apprentice by Hobb (my fave author, as evidenced by the dedication). I'm glad I could open you up to all the opportunities of first person! I taught a class on narrative positions when I was a creative writing lecturer so I'm just very passionate about how form can marry function, hah.
4. Yes, four (technically five) is tame compared to some! I did seven in Seven Mercies and whew, that was a lot, even though technically my co-writer and I mostly split it up. My next projects will be 2 and then 1 as a bit of a breather. It is harder to balance multi POV, but I love the "heteroglossia" potential of storytelling.
6. Thank you!
7. I wish I could listen to the audiobooks of my books! I get too self-conscious or want to edit. I can say that Philip and Rachel did amazing jobs from the samples I head, though, and I was super excited they hired a nonbinary voice actor for Arcady. This was also my first time having more than one voice actor, which was neat.
And yes, I hope so too. <3

some thoughts about life right now;
i've been on a really intense project since late July and let me tell you, i am tired! i'm one of the few people at my job that specialize in this type of work--we are excited to train more--but for now i am just hanging out here preparing to trade one high pressure project for another for the foreseeable future. which ultimately is fine! even though it can be stressful, I would rather be doing this type of work, which is interesting and super fulfilling and matters a lot to me, than other types of work, which do not feel fulfilling and are actually pretty boring.
it's a little confusing to find myself here because last year i went on medical leave for mental health reasons and prior to that i was doing a very different kind of work, and when i came back in january they started me off with this new kind of work (which i do prefer) with basically no training from my supervisor. which is fine, i am comfortable learning on the fly and/or teaching myself, and i have both a lot of experience doing this and a lot of experience in Complex Projects, albeit in a different practice area. then i moved onto this project in late july. so like again very little training in this specific type of work but i assure you, nothing is as stressful as my last job was. and i do love this project! even though it's stressful! i've since learned that this is just going to be my specialty! which like...i am happy with the outcome but i feel like i sort of tripped and fell into it in the least expected way possible.
while thinking about it, i think i thought i'd only make it to this kind of work, this kind of project, by working hard--and i had a specific idea of what working hard looked like, what striving looked like. but i have been working hard for the last year or so, healing, learning, growing, recovering, all of it. and that is hard work. and by taking time to tend to myself, and grow and change and learn and heal, i became ready for this kind of stressful work. and that's not the narrative we have around this. culturally we have a narrative of self sacrifice and unpaid overtime and being really fucking type A and having unhealthy work/life balance, but as soon as I stepped away and said actually, i've had enough, i will not burn my life out for you, i started down a road that led me to doing the type of work i want to do in a healthier and more prepared way. and that's fucking awesome!
for now i am just trying to make it to the end of this project in mid october. which means coping skills, baby! wish i could write but i don't have capacity for it rn, and that's fine. so my priorities are: maintenance days (cleaning/chores). reading. knitting. baking. yoga. hiking. i want to make life as easy and cozy for myself as possible right now.
i haven't knit for several months and I'm thinking of trying my first sweater--this gorgeous sweater called Mountain Mist. however i've never done colorwork before so the pattern suggests doing the same colorwork in a swatch hat (here) to practice. i am SO HYPE!!! this pattern is also admittedly deeply my aesthetic. i showed it to my partner and he laughed bc it's so typically me lol. i also checked out the first book in Tana French's Dublin Murders series on audiobook to listen too while knitting. spooky season means murder mysteries. 🥰
also my work office is being remodeled so i will be working from home for the next 6ish months, and we're preparing to overhaul my little work corner in our house so it is better/more ergonomic/has more storage/is cuter. also i am going to get a standing desk for my poor knees 😵‍💫 recently worked from 8:30 to 9:30 and my knees hurt sooooo bad 😩
it's nice to know that a year ago i wouldn't have been able to handle this project or really know how to slow down and prioritize self care and after a ton of hard work on my mental health i'm now i'm like, well, it is a bit stressful but we got this. progress 😌💖

7/9/2024 random notes:
I should look up sometime why Sherlock is 福尔摩斯 in chinese. Also, for the sherlock fans: the Granada Holmes show is on youtube with chinese subs if you search "fuermosi"
Listening to so much chinese this past month paid off!!! I listened to MoDu audio drama episode 1 yesterday and understood almost every single line! I was only missing some details when Tao Ran mentioned he won't bend (wan) and said "but if" and luo wenzhou told him to shut up, and when Luo Wenzhou talks to Wang Honglian and they use words like manage/supervise him but i am not sure which words meant which in regard to that "monitoring wang honglian" bit, and when Xiao Haiyang talked I just got his "strangled victim and moved" but for some reason i just couldnt understand him talking as easily as Wang Honglian, Luo Wenzhou, and Tao Ran. That's the most I've ever followed something thats only audio! I think I can officially listen to the modu audio drama just for like entertainment.
I've been relistening to modu chapters 1-5 audiobook a few more times, and more details get clearer to me (and i remember more words i used to know in reading) each time. Phrases are easier for me to comprehend immediately as i hear them, as i relisten. I'm now listening to new chapters (chapters 6 onward) and its fairly easy for me to follow the main idea - i know what scene im listening to and can tell what actions people do and their dialogue, its just more descriptive words (that arent the common serious/simple/clearly words) and phrases (like 4 hanzi non-verb descriptives) that I'm not understanding. I'm so excited. I'm looking up a word every few minutes (like saobao 骚包 show off) when I hear a word I don't know that I'm curious about. I'm really excited! I just!! I love this novel!! It's so cool hearing it kind of voice acted, you know what I mean? It's cool to hear scenes I imagined. I am wondering what the action scenes, or all the creepy scenes in case 2 arw going to sound like. One of my favorite scenes is when the killer little girl is being interrogated by Tao Ran and Fei Du and she thinks of people as prey, and Fei Du is paralleled to her and better at figuring out how to get answers. Its such an unsettling scene.
I'm through 1638 sentences in glossika japanese, its still listing that as high A1. I guess it hasnt taught many individual words compared to the 1638 sentences. I hope the unique words increase in number eventually. Maybe im getting good grammar practice who knows. I am mulling over the idea of playing ff7 Crisis Core (or the ps5 Remake ff7 Reunion) in japanese only, sometime soon. Since I've done it before (but it was a SLOG 2 years ago when i tried... i read so slow and felt like i was drowning lol). I feel like it should be more doable this time, since i can play Yakuza Ishin in japanese only now (although it felt like i was just guessing based on Vibes when i played ishin it was not as mentally draining). On the other hand, id like glossika japanese to fucking say "low b1" before I try playing a video game again. So i can also feel like i (hopefully) studied 2000+ or more basic words before i try playing games in japanese again.
Then again, who knows with me. I often end up deviating from my plans. Maybe i'll end up playing some game in all japanese today just to spite attempts to plan ToT

do you recommend the Game of Thrones books?
i 100% do! they're some of my favourite books so i'm a bit biased but i really think that the world is so rich and there's such a wide range of characters to really dig into that it's just so much fun. i personally listened to the audiobooks and it was just like listening to constant medieval gossip lmao. i also think they're pretty funny if that's something you're looking for.
BUT massive warning that they're quite graphically violent and that includes sexual violence. it also has a fair amount of just uncomfortable sex scenes and some of the plot points include incest. if you've watched the show then you probably have a good idea already but i'd never feel right recommending them without making sure the reader knows what they're getting into.
on a less serious note i would also only really recommend it if you're a fan of high fantasy, it can be a hard genre to enjoy and asoiaf can be a difficult starting point, but there's no harm in giving it a go anyway if you're really interested.
last but not least, the series is currently unfinished and the last book came out over a decade ago, so i would also not recommend it if that's something you can't stand.
hope this helps! sorry most of this ended up being a massive warning sticker but i do genuinely love these books and want people to enjoy them as well. currently reading fire and blood which is basically just a history book and it's making me fall in love with the world all over again. thanks for the ask :)

10 Things About Me
I was tagged by the talented @patiently-burning. I’m happy to welcome you to the Ghostsoap brainrot, especially with @valiants amazing art. My favorite Ghostsoap artist! Their work makes me feral; I’d kill for them -- or at least write for them. Below for random facts about me!
1.) I double majored in Archaeology and Creative Writing in college. I idolized Lara Croft and Indiana Jones and then, luckily, fell in love with the *actual* science of archaeology and Roman history so I’ve managed to stick with it. 2.) I’ve lived on and off in Italy (semesters where I taught abroad) since 2017; and a couple times before that for my own study abroad program and archaeological digs/dives. 3.) I’m a runner! I usually run an hour, but sometimes I run up to 9 miles a morning not only to stay in shape but as meditation. I listen to audiobooks while I do it!
4.) I worked as a dog bather for a couple years to get money to go to grad school and then in a dog ‘boutique’ because I love dogs so much. I love all animals, dogs just happen to be my favorite.
5.) I’m a huge Resident Evil fan. I’ve been playing the games since they first came out (I was a little kid and had no clue what I was doing lol). I can literally rant on and on about the lore and timeline; og re4 and re2 are the best but I love the remakes and all the new fans!
6.) I’ve been published for scholarly writing, but it’s my dream to write fiction, primarily historical fiction.
7.) I’m an oddball who likes nerdy things *and* sports - I played varsity softball in high school and I’m still on an adult co rec team!
8.) I stopped writing fanfiction for a couple years while working on my thesis for grad school. I started writing again for Nellis because I reread some of my old stuff and wondered why I ever stopped with these characters. Writing them feels like slipping on my most comfortable shoes or a favorite shirt. After I read that stuff I got metaphorically slapped upside the head with the idea for Retread (the ending in particular)... and let’s just say it’s grown a lot from what I had envisioned; but I’m a gardener writer, so that makes sense.
9.) Besides RE, my favorite game in the world is an obscure RPG called Shadow Hearts. It’s a Lovecraftian horror game set in China and Europe just before WW1 breaks out - it deals with horror, the occult, and some zany characters. I cry every time I play it and its sequel (Shadow Hearts: Covenant). Most people like the second game better, but I find the first one to be creepier, have better music, and the characters are more interesting. The sequel IS a good game, though.
10.) I secretly wish I had more time! I often feel guilty because I’m more of a writer in fandom than a reader because I’m so busy with life smacking me every which way. I also wish I could output more, but alas, we can only do our best, right?
Thanks so much for tagging me! I’m not apologizing for the love of Soap or Ghost. That was a well written campaign! I’m going to tag more than one person: @peculiarreality-main and @ohlookapan!

mister impossible thoughts!!
I really loved the book, do NOT click read more if you don’t want to get utterly, utterly spoiled. I just want to upload my initial thoughts here for safekeeping until I go and (hopefully, eventually) reread MI.
SPOILERS
SPOILERS
yeah this is going to be chock full of spoilers
I need to reread (with my eyes this time) before I form any useful thoughts on this book, but initial review: I loved it! It was such an enjoyable read, the pacing was very tight and it was a solid follow up to CDTH. It was tonally much darker and the ramifications were more high stakes than your usual Birdverse books.
Disclaimer: I’ve only listened to the audiobook so it’s very likely I glossed over stuff/misread some plot points/straight up forgot and/or didn’t register certain things. anyway lmao it’s reading just for fun? Keeping this as a refresher on what happened in this book because I can feel it leaving my brain as I type <3 it’s just gushing and rambling and seriously so fucking long.
CHARACTERS:
HENNESSY, FAROOQ-LANE AND LILIANA
—We got SO much more Hennessy POV this time around, and I just. I love her <3
I love her causing problems, I love her trying to fix these problems by going to people she thinks may help her, then going “fuck you guys, you suck” when they suck and finding other people who help her in a little better way. And then causing more problems, but this time with INTENT. You go girl! Love her monologues, and from the bottom of my heart fuck Jay Hennessy, Bill Dower and State of Pennsylvania. And also Bryde. Hennessy deserves so much better and I hope she finds that better with herself, her dreaming, Jordan and the new wlw murder couple which hopefully will progress into the wlw murder threesome (a girl can hope, a girl has been hoping since CDTH) and also become friends with Ronan again.
Mainly I want her to acknowledge how fucked up her abuse/neglect was and acknowledge how much that hurt her, and be happy and in a good place at the end of it, with a solid support system. I love her so incredibly much. Both the most heartbreaking scenes in this book for me were her scenes, and frankly so were most of the badass scenes. Her painting her own portrait because Jay abandoned it completely broke me (if you talk to me about Jordan in White and how it’s a sweetmetal I will start crying that is a threat) and so did the scene where she brings out the Lace in the kids’ house (also lmao the only place where I feel Bryde unequivocally said and did the right thing!).
Also the final dream showdown and the Game with Jordan were both awesome as fuck. I Love Women. It’s going to be very interesting to see how she fixes her relationship with Jordan and Ronan next book, and how her relationship with Farooq-Lane and Liliana progresses. They have a sword and an intent to kill the Lace, I do not think we are looking at failure here❤️I believe in the power of swords and love and (homoerotic?) friendship.
I feel her arc was definitely my favourite in this book, because it felt like she did complete a mini character arc in this book while reaching the climax point of her trilogy arc. And she was treated so kindly and sympathetically this book, by both the narrative and (most of) the characters and yeah, I’m going to get emo about her now. I can’t believe she just yanked out the ley line from under Ronan and Bryde, literal girlboss shit❤️
She has ways to go, but she did make some progress, start taking matters into her own hand and came to reasonable-ish conclusions by the end of it. It was good, she was so good.
—I really love the other characters in the book too, they were all great!! Farooq-Lane especially. She was the breakout star in my eyes, I will never get over this cowboy former-financial adviser with secret sword-fighting abilities. Using advice from her mentor on how to bridge the gap between the customer’s present and future selves to help time splitting visionaries. Like LEGEND. I love her and how outstandingly kind she is even if she makes some weird, ill-advised choices at times; but it’s okay because she’s so good at course-correcting and acknowledging when she fucks up. Her trying to keep promises to people she just met, doing her best to help lost dreamers, peppering in Young Professional advice🥰🥰.
Her and Liliana are very cute but I was gunning for Hennessy to join them since CDTH so I am...vibrating with excitement. And vindication. This trio is so good. I will read a whole book only about them. Also I am OBSESSED with that sword-fight with Bryde, but she deserved to shoot Ramsey too. Also is she the ONLY undreamt moderator?? FAROOQ-LANE WHAT ARE YOU HIDING.
—I can’t get a grip on Liliana but I do think it’s more by design than anything, I love that she’s like fuck you all I am not self-sacrificing myself for you guys. If you blow up, you blow up🙄CORRECT energy. This is the wisdom we need. I hope we get to know more about her, a little backstory, a little...frontstory, maybe a POV. I have a feeling she’s linked with Persephone/her brand of psychicness but no idea how that’d work. Carliana is cute, but with Hennessy their dynamic is vastly superior so I’m thrilled. The Lace is going to cause complications here and it’ll be delicious.
JORDAN, DECLAN AND MATTHEW
— Jordan and Declan were also so so good this book. They were mostly happy (and so fucking HORNY) for a fair chunk of this book, which they deserve, but the way things ended i’m very very excited to see how they deal with the storm that seems eminent. Also Declan. Jordan. They’re so insane, they’re like one minute away from fucking in the museum. They’ve decided JSS is the third person in the relationship. They are talking about getting married. They have known each other for a month. Maybe two.
— I love nice and kind characters, but I don’t necessarily need characters to be nice and kind. HOWEVER can we all give it up for Jordan, who is nice and kind, and is not actively making the worst decisions of her life?
I do not blame anyone too much for the decisions they are making and I think they’re all, at least a little bit justified in why they make their decisions, but Jordan is actively and with single-minded focus figuring her shit out! Dealing with the girls’ deaths! Her own episodes! Even makes good money on the side! She steals a car, learns about how to keep herself awake in case the worst happens, learns to make a sweetmetal herself and generally is just doing her best. I want her and Hennessy to make up and be close again I cannot take them fighting for any longer :( That reunion scene was heartbreaking but it was also simply the best, and I can’t wait for them to work their shit out.
Really hope Hennessy and her reunite again early next book and they are doing shit together! Crime, dream magic, switcheroo shenanigans, anything! Also the missing Jay memories was one thing that I felt was definitely more about Hennessy than Jordan, but then at the end of the book she is awake? The whole world goes to shit and she’s awake??? Is she a sweetmetal herself? Did she get separated from Hennessy? Is she somehow not a dream (anymore?)?
Also Jordan flirting with the bartender in the beginning <3
— Declan, for all his lapses in judgement, is actually quite good at course-correcting too? Not Farooq-Lane level good, but it was nice to see him think about the Aurora and Niall situation and his own relationship with the criminal underground with is a level of reflection that’s pretty impressive considering how much he’s still repressing. Also he got to be bitchy and an asshole this book, and poor Matthew, yeah, but also Declan’s literally earned this. Love him, he’s truly insane <3
He’s going to have a fucked-up time in the first part of next book, and it’s going to be interesting to see how he deals with it, considering his whole thing about “letting my guard down/living for myself will get my brothers killed” and then kind of living for himself for a second there and his brothers being in danger. And also the fact that he made an idiotic decision that put Ronan in danger and made him distrust Declan (and made Ronan push away the little support system he was willing to accept)! Like, of course only one of those things is considerably more his fault than the other, he does deserve to live for himself and he shouldn’t have to sacrifice that, it’s not causation, it’s barley correlation, but I’m wondering how he is going to see the situation? Anyway, big sad for him and his brothers at the end, he’s literally the last Lynch awake :(
— Matthew was also generally kind and nice. I was so, so proud of him in the end with him deciding that he’s real. He deserves to punch Declan <3 But I do love their relationship and am so fascinated by it because it’s genuinely a messy, messy situation. Like Declan’s essentially been Matthew’s sole parental figure since Matt’s been in middle school?? He’s only four years older to Matthew, but Matthew just has to accept him as his legal guardian! That’s an age difference that works quite differently when you’re thirteen and your older brother is seventeen, and differently when you’re almost eighteen and he’s twenty-one, so it’s messy there because his older brothers have “oh Matthew is a baby” bias already, which can get grating on its own.
But then he’s also a dream. He’s a dream and they’ve known all this while! That makes everything infinitely more complicated. His friendship with Jordan is so cute. I’m glad she tells him about how a lot of it is also just growing up, because a lot of Matthew’s inner narration pointed at that as well!! It’s interesting to see a growing up, teen-angst arc in a book mostly about young twenty-somethings, it’s a lot of the problems TRC characters faced, but through a different lens. I do wish we’d gotten his thoughts on other stuff too (getting kidnapped! Aurora!) but it’s okay he’s in existential crisis mode, I’ll let it slide.
And WTF why are you throwing yourself into the security system, Matthew? Lynch brothers are fucking insane. But also welp, he’s asleep now. Do NOT go towards the voice Matthew D:
RONAN AND BRYDE
—Ronan!! Ronan, babe, what the hell. I felt so bad for Ronan this book, especially towards the end. He was being a little short-sighted, but ultimately it was a sympathetic arc. It’s also so deeply an arc about loneliness and community and something I want to look at more closely when I reread (not only through Ronan’s arc, but also Hennessy’s and Declan’s and Jordan’s and Farooq-Lane’s). Where much about Ronan trying to figure out how and where he fits in the world—his whole what am I please tell me what I am crisis gets front seat this book.
The implication of Bryde being a manifestation of Ronan’s want for a utter loneliness/father figure/guide/freedom-to-dream that’s being nurtured in secret for more than a decade is really heartbreaking, and also the whole situation...just really fucking sucks for Ronan dude. He’s been dealing with so much for so long.
Bryde being an amalgamation of his need for freedom + Ronan’s loneliness and (self)isolation + need to do something and make it meaningful + need for a guiding force + the whole what am i please tell me what i am crisis, all put together in the shiny veneer of your classic hero figure is very sad but also super uh, sexy (?) from a narrative choice point of view. Very apt for the Lynch family.
Also, what felt worse was that Ronan has been clearly dealing with self-worth issues as well as the feeling that he’s not built for this world the way his brothers and friends are (and that the world is not built for him), insecurities with relationships, his fraught control between reality and dreaming, the plethora of parental neglect issues and has just given a voice/physical form to it and have that form make it seem...better? Different?
Instead of dealing with those issues as things that need to be addressed, Bryde is dealing with them as non-issues or very black and white problems (and also pushes most of the time that the problem is that the others don’t care? Which we know isn’t true, and it’s not really their fault here at all, but the implications of that being Ronan’s mindspace is saddening. Also a mindfuck. Bryde’s isolation tactics are Ronan self-isolating?). It feels pretty par for the course, with Ronan himself seeing issues as black or white a lot of the times! We’ve been told this multiple times.
I do think there’s more to Bryde though. I think he may also be an ancient existing entity separate of Ronan and Lindenmere. Just given a man-suit (like the tree suit).
(also now I do think as I’m writing this I don’t think this arc is necessarily a lot of steps back for Ronan. I think it’s an improvement in a certain way—I don’t think it necessarily erased Ronan’s progress in TDT—while still being realistically sad and difficult. Recovery isn’t linear! Like yes, he runs away from everyone he loves but at first it’s with a surprising layer of [thin] optimism. But then it gets bad again.).
I’m sorry but I think it’s a little funny too, honestly, Ronan all but joining an ecoterrorist cult with he, himself and Bryde, but the implication of why Bryde was dreamt was pretty 🤧.
The way his dreaming was stifled in his childhood developing into a manifestation of a figure who could teach him how to dream is one thing, but the fact that it gets manifested not when he needed it the most (around TRB-TDT??) but after he figured out the ropes a bit and wanted to help other dreamers in terrible situations? RONAN🥺. Ronan really internalised the hero stories, which makes perfect sense to be honest, and is a neat little metaphor for the Lynch family and the book’s stance on dreaming/stories as a whole, mythic as they come. I think Maggie a long time ago said that this series is about the “stories we tell about ourselves” so this is like. Well, first rate taking control of the narrative, Ronan! Dreamt a whole hero and villain and...an entire governmental agency? (That part is not confirmed I guess). He’s hungry for something more, we know this, the metaphor was not subtle in the least lol.
Anyway, he was good, really good. Corruption arc my beloved. He’s not in the best head space, he’s making bad decisions and slowly pushing people away, and with what happened at the end, with the mods and Declan and Adam, and then Hennessy and the ley line, and THEN Bryde’s reveal, he’s just straight up just not having a good time this last hundred pages! While he was hasty in the end, he was not unreasonable in feeling betrayed or hurt by Declan and Adam (and while we know the reason why they did that didn’t have anything to do with stifling Ronan/ensuring he’s a controlled dreamer—Ronan (through Bryde) has shown to struggle with that line of thought! So this probably feels like a worse betrayal for that reason). Like, yeah I guess I wish he’d talked about it more in the end, but also obviously I don’t, because we need a third book.
The Lynch brothers are wrong about each other a truly impressive number of times, but I do think Declan hit it right on the head when he was giving that monologue to Farooq-Lane. Ronan is a bit of a follower, and he does wrap himself up in his “Person” at the time, and I think dreaming up his inherent wants as Bryde hints at both this and his avoidance issues.
But I have faith in him and that he will stop eco-terrorising and learn from this and emerge triumphant and face his issues head-on and all that good stuff, so I know that getting from where we are currently to where we have to go will be a good, worthwhile journey, and I’m excited! Endgame for him will be helping other dreamers, but in his own way, and I can’t wait for it.
Other Stuff:
1. The book is so much about chronic illness, and being hungry for creation, and art and control and community and the loneliness of early adulthood and what stories mean to people and it’s all so well done. It’s also a gut punch. Multiple gut punches one after the other. Magic as a metaphor is my favourite concept in fantastical novels, and it’s a huge part of these books, and Mister Impossible does an amazing, amazing job running with that.
2. lmaoo Adam scamming his college mates with tarot cards. Good for him! But also this web of lies is definitely going to end up collapsing on him at some point. He’s insane. I cannot believe that both Ronan and Adam went, basically, I will help the other Ronan/Adams of the world! And then one decided to become a cult leader via proxy dream and the other decided to spin a fake personality for himself and lie about every facet of his life while joylessly buying his acquaintances $14 dollar waffles. Iconic behaviour legends <3 Learning curve!
3. Speaking of which! Oh god, Hennessy and Ronan! I love Gansey, he’s a good friend mostly, but even in his bluntest moments he does not call out Ronan the way Hennessy does. I love Ronan, but also he deserves that 100% from Hennessy, he is often times a major asshole. The things they said to each other! That dreamt phone store! That final showdown! They’re at two extreme ends of what is (I hope? Maggie come throughhhh) a complex problem and they need to meet in the middle eventually until they can become the fast friends they saw in Rhiannon Martin’s mirrors. Learning curve.
4. lmao the thing is, after CDTH, I had kind of called Declan getting sort of desperate, being in cahoots with the moderators/joining up with them because he thinks he can help Ronan like that but the whole plan massively backfiring in their face, and also causing Lynch Brothers Split 2.0. Not exactly what happened, but close enough! I think the initial plan is absolutely the well-meaning but utterly presumptuous sort that’s in character for Declan, and tbh it was after the Museum scene when Bryde really started ringing those danger signals, like that guy’s monologue and orbs are fucked up, so I’m not. Surprised. I am a little more curious about Farooq-Lane doing what she did but then again not surprised. However I am incredibly surprised that the plan didn’t fuck up due to terminal overthinking but instead due to terminal underthinking. Learning curve?
5. Uh oh sisters, now there is like. Actual cause for Adam concern, coupled with definite cause of concern for Ronan. Dream space arguments? Dreaming up copies? What is in storeee
6. Ronan not knowing the difference between dream and reality FUCKED ME UP. That’s hands down the trope that fucks me up the most, so I was stressed the whole time for that trope. I was worried it would happen with Hennessy tbh. It wasn’t so bad though—I was expecting season 3 Teen Wolf-esque fuckery.
7. Rhiannon Martin’s mirrors. Rhiannon Martin as a whole. That whole sequence was batshit and I am just. Feeling things.
8. The scene after the dreamer kids house where Hennessy is just. Done and broken and Ronan hugs her? 😔🤧besties❤️
9. Hey, Bill Dower you entered late but with a bang on TRC’s Running List of Shitty Dads
10. Farooq-Lane lying in the shallow icy fountain with a straw and a sword. Just. BABE. what the fuck.
11. declan 🤝farooq-lane when it comes to basing off their entire life mantra on pieces of generic day planner advice from their overworked “mentor” figures. insane young professionals.
12. Also NATHAN. FAROOQ. LANE. WTF is up with him and his scissors and his “explosive” murders which seem visionary-esque and his weird relationship with trees and what is the backstory/family situation there and mainly why doesn’t Carmen fall asleep like the rest of the moderators? She is the only undreamt moderator? Who even dreamt the moderators? What is UP with her. We need more Farooq-Lane family lore.
13. Lynch brothers have got to hug once at least, otherwise this is kind of unacceptable you know? :/ They all deserve a huge hug and a fucking break.
14. Mór Ó Corra please come back and cause problems, thanks.
15. Originally I had only Bryde and the New Fenian on the list of possibe deaths, I didn’t think Hennessy OR Declan would genuinely be in danger of dying in this series (who were the only two main characters with actual death foreshadowing). I think Hennessy is truly safe at this point, but I’m putting Declan back on the chopping block 😔rip dude, you had a good run. I hope it’s not the case, and I still think it’s unlikely, but likelier than post-CDTH me had thought.
16. Last thing, I do think the Ronan and Bryde plot is going to involve...mostly Ronan and Bryde and maaaybe Adam’s uh, severed consciousness in dreamspace (Chekhov’s shared dreams!) but also I think the comedy potential of Jordan, Declan, Matthew (?) + Hennessy, Liliana, Farooq-Lane meeting up and trying to deal with a liberated Bryde on their own for a bit is just. Extremely good. Four out of those six people have actually tried to murder Bryde.
17. Sorry I lied. Actual last thing. HOW THE FUCK ARE WE GOING TO EXPLAIN THIS TO THE WORLD NOW THAT AIRPLANES ARE FALLING FROM THE SKY??? And....the beetles...
Other other stuff!! (ramblings? weirdness? questions? criticism?)
1. We got nothing of Blue or Henry, and just a couple of mentions of Gansey and the Gray Man, and I don’t really mind, but the TRC people I was most surprised to see were absent were the Foxway ladies. I thought there was a snippet with Maura? Hopefully next book!
2. I’ll be honest—the Bryde reveal was not a surprise one bit, because 1) we all cycled through so many Bryde theories we hit that one a fair few times, and 2) we have had a “this entity is a dream” reveal as a plot twist literally every book, so it was a little expected. But it didn’t really need to be completely unexpected because it made thematic sense, and the logistics of Ronan dreaming Bryde provides enough “twist” to it.
I just hope that we get to know about the logistics. Those rumours at the Fairy Market? The moderators? Based on past experience, this has potential to go super unresolved at the end of the series😬But, like, hopefully it will end up making sense!
2. I overall really loved the pacing, plot, character development, relationship development and so on! It was a good sequel, and it took us to dark but, I think, logical places. HOWEVER I do feel, later on when I’m judging this series and this book, a lot is going to depend on how well Maggie manages to resolve the plot in third book.
3. Because even leaving alone the new/side plots (the Lace, Mór Ó Corra, Jordan not falling asleep, Farooq-Lane not falling asleep, whatever the fuck is up with Liliana, the sweetmetal lore, just a bunch of character arcs in general, maybe more lore about the three dreamer families—there’s a fair chunk) the Bryde plot itself has a lot of mind fuck moments that I generally liked, but felt a liiittle plot holey to me. Anyway! We’ll see. I just hope the plot is satisfactory, because character stuff is Maggie’s strong suit and as much as I LOVE Bryde’s character and the implications of his character, I do want concrete answers.
4. There’s so much mis/non-communication here to make this plot work (surprisingly I have more issue with off screen non-communication than anything that happened in the book), and usually I’m not a fan of that, but considering who the characters are, it...honestly makes sense. The story really is about non-communication, at the core, so yeah. But I can also see how people may get annoyed at it, and that’s fair, because a truly ridiculous amount of the plot depends on that. I’m just going to try to take it as a feature instead of a bug, so to speak. It’s fine, the plot we get out of the non-communication is mostly worth it!
5. I think Ronan and Hennessy struggling with whether or not they want to reach out to their loved ones is [while obviously contrived, I don’t fault Stief it. We do need a novel] makes a ton of sense with their arcs and where their characters are at mentally, BUT a lot of other non-communication, with regards to information that characters would logically have/conversations that would have taken place, kind of took me out of the story at times—and I am not really here for the logistics! I can totally imagine people who perhaps read Mister Impossible more casually/more objectively taking issue with the book for it and again, honestly. That’s fair.
6. Same vein, with any spinoff series, there’s a little retcon. Personally, I didn’t care about the retcons, because they were minor and generally I don’t care much about them even in books I don’t like (and I really liked this book!) but again I can see why people might be a little confused about it. I was kind of surprised we didn’t talk about a lot of things in certain characters POVs though (Matthew not thinking about the kidnapping, not much about Hennessy’s girls from either Jordan or Hennessy’s perspectives, a few other stuff like that) .
7. I admit I got distracted by Will Patton and his terrible accents for a little bit, but I think we didn’t really get confirmation about what the Greywaren is? We got an explanation of a sort—about it meaning Protector and that tree (Illidorin?), but still a little vague in the details. How did Niall know about it? Why did he know about it? Also did he know about sweetmetals? I feel there are references to it in Opal and that Declan short story but I cannot explain to myself why he would not stock up on those OR at least tell his sons about it! It doesn’t seem to be a huge secret! Just. More answers about the Greywaren business.
8. Also a little more clarity in the magical system would be nice, because I’ve been bugged by these things for years and would like some answers! Also Bryde’s existence raises some very interesting points, but also a couple of wait what? moments, and I hope that also starts to makes little more sense! I feel the Lace and Mór and Liliana are all plot points we’ll definitely cover next book, but Nathan Farooq-Lane is the mystery I am most curious about, and Moderators being dreams was for some reason, the more unexpected dream reveal in this book? DREAMS HUNTING DREAMERS. I’m just worried we may not go back to this plot point lmao. It’s fine, it’s f😔✌️
ANYWAY! Immensely enjoyed this read, I cannot wait for book three and see how the plots gets resolved. Loved it💖 I’m going to just use this Rambling as a refresher when the time comes I guess!

Top 5 Books To Read This Year
Tagged by @xserpx (thank you :D)
I have this weird thing where I prioritize authors I haven’t read yet in order to find out if they are a new favourite. This happens because I already know I can count on the books I have left to read from authors I really like. That means this list doesn’t have any Octavia E. Butler, Patricia A. McKillip, Kazuo Ishiguro, etc, even though of course I am always excited to read their books that I have left to read.
1. “The Curse of Chalion” by Lois McMaster Bujold - This was sold to me by @beeblackburn as a more optimistic Hobb and from the two chapters I’ve read already I did notice some similarities in characters and feel, but the writing isn’t as pretty. I put it on hold because I am reading “Imago” in order to finish the Xenogenesis trilogy and those two are ebooks. I am trying to stick to 1 ebook at a time. If I read more than one book at once it will have to be a different format. Currently I am also listening to “The Last Unicorn” audiobook and I started “Station Eleven” on paperback, for example. Also, I have been more in a scifi mood, but Peter S. Beagle is changing that a little and pulling me back into fantasy again.
2. “The Traitor Baru Cormorant” by Seth Dickinson - This book has so much hype around it and people keep saying how good it is and how the ending destroyed them. I too want to be emotionally crushed by a book again. I started this book last year actually, but I put it on hold to do some reading challenges and then ended up reading books with similar themes. However, I decided to read it again from the beginning this year and I did love the chapters I read of Baru’s childhood so it will not be a problem to reread them at all. My only fear is that I might want to read the other books immediately and the series isn’t finished yet.
3. "Jade City” by Fonda Lee - I can’t stand people hyping these books so much and me not being a part of it. I keep hearing how great the characters are and how much the 3rd book made them cry and once again I also want to be obliterated by a book. I need to know. I am not aiming super high for character work because I know how hyped books work, but I expect “The Poppy War” level at least. I am a bit in doubt about this one because I don’t like mafia movies and such, but I heard someone put “Jade Legacy” along with “Fool’s Fate” as books that made them cry so now I got to know (if I ever get there). Points for being a complete trilogy.
4. "A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K. Le Guin - Storytime: I tried this book before and was not into it. I started it on ebook and wasn’t feeling it then I listened to half of the audiobook and my mind wandered so much I missed most of the story and I was so bored. HOWEVER, I had the wrong expectations going into it. I was expecting something similar to how Hobb approaches story in Realm of the Elderlings since so much in it seems to have been inspired by this book. Turns out that was the wrong approach so I tried reading it again recently keeping in mind that this would be closer to a Patricia A. McKillip book and... it went much better. It really gave me the same feeling as “The Riddle-Master of Hed”, which is an unusual McKillip work because it’s more traditional fantasy and less fairytale-esque, but I still enjoy. I already asked a friend to let me borrow his book that includes the first 4 in this series so if he remembers I will get it tomorrow. Reading it will happen eventually.
5. “Deathless” by Catherynne M. Valente - Look, you people really need to stop posting quotes from this author around because they are really beautiful and I am so tempted all the time. I don’t even remember what the book is about. All I remember is that every time I read quotes from it I am like “wow that’s really pretty” and yet I still haven’t read it! That will hopefully end this year. I will at least try this book out.
6. (because I’m a cheater) “Lonely Castle in the Mirror” by Mizuki Tsujimura - The concept of this book is magnificent and have you seen the cover? It really seems like it would be my thing. Plus, storygraph says this is emotional and mysterious. Two of my favourite moods. I got to read it.

Top Seven: Websites
I’ve scoured the internet high and low for some fantastic websites you can spend time on, without feeling like you are missing out on theater stuff during the pandemic.
1. For Podcasts...Broadway Podcast Network
So. Many. Podcasts! That focus specifically on theater, Broadway, and the West End! Did you know that Tim Rice, Donna McKechnie, and Kerry Butler all have podcasts? Listen to them here, along with podcasts on backstage happenings, show-based series, and even some Dungeons and Dragons played by thespians!
2. For Streaming Shakespeare...Globe Player
I am personally having a war with myself to switch from Netflix and Hulu over to subscribing to the Globe’s streaming service. Not only do they have shows in English, but in performed in other languages too! Lithuanian productions of Hamlet with subtitles, a South Korean production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and one of my favorites, Twelfth Night with Stephen Fry as Malvolio and Mark Rylance as Olivia!
3. For Book Box Subscriptions...Dramatists Play Service Book Club
I, again, personally have not used this service. It’s a quarterly (and somewhat pricey) book subscription box, at $34.99 for a box of  seven plays delivered four times a year. I’m not someone who has book box subscriptions, but if I ever become one, it would absolutely be this one.
4. For Brushing Up on Your Shakespeare (Scansion)...Precanned Shakespeare
Are you performing Shakespeare soon and haven’t the faintest idea on how to score your lines? Thank goodness for Precanned Shakespeare! This site, presents each play and sonnet by Shakespeare with each line of verse scanned with syllable notes, indicating where the emphasis in lines and words belongs.
5. For Reading Plays Online...Scribd
If you subscribe to any reading-focused website, it should be Scribd. There are so many nonfiction, fiction, and audiobooks here for your enjoyment. Know what else they have, at the price of $9.99 month for access to everything? Hundreds of plays and musical theater books.
6. For Finding DVDs and CDs of International Shows...eBay
I’ve found a million different cast albums for Wicked, Elisabeth, Tanz der Vampire, and more, that you can’t find on Amazon. There is far more memorabilia from various productions than on Amazon.
7. For Finding DVDs and CDs and Sheet Music and More of International Shows...Sound of Music-Shop
Goodness I love this website. I can’t find sheet music for Die Päpstin anywhere else but here! You can use their advance search to filter shows by country, which streamlines your quest for more international musicals even quicker!

ACOTAR review (spoilers!)
Tumblr media
Star rating / 5: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
I have so many books to start posting about but I recently finished this series and wanted to start off with the first installment of Sarah J. Mass's ACOTAR.
Honestly, I stayed away from this one for a while due to all the hype on social media, describing it as a smut novel, not peaking my interest a whole lot. As a kid I had always been into the fantasy genre, so I eventually decided to give it a try since my friends all loved it.
I'll preface this post with the fact that I did consume these books solely as audiobooks both through Libby or Audible - it works better for my lifestyle and I enjoy them a ton! The audio version of the ACOTAR books had a fantastic narrator that carried through the first 3 books named Jennifer Ikeda - her subtle intonation changes to denote different characters was some of my favorite audio work and I was disappointed when the series eventually ended up changing narrators, though all were good.
I'm going to try to not include too many spoilers, just enough plot to keep my thoughts together.
To start, I really didn't like the not-so-subtle Beauty and the Beast theme that began the story. It felt a bit predictable from the moment we met Tamlin in his beast form, through when he just so happened to conveniently be rich handsome and obsessed with her. I saw that from a mile away, but I won't dwell too much on the predictability of this book as the series does pick up with surprise twists later on.
I did not understand the draw Feyre had on Tamlin throughout her time at the Spring Court until I understood the bargain she was meant to break. She didn't stand out to me as a particularly compelling heroine until the trials Under the Mountain, probably because of the circumstances surrounding her stay in Spring, and my general dislike of Tamlin from the start. To me, he always felt whiny and entitled, and I held his blonde hair against him, albeit rightfully so. His lack of emotion UTM completely fired me up. As a certain someone later pointed out, he never did anything to try to save her, knowing she was literally dying for him. Prick.
Lucien always resonated with me, I felt he was more a more trustworthy and caring companion to Feyre, and given how their relationship progresses throughout the series I'm glad I favored him. I also loved how the manor staff remained constant with Feyre to help her through confusing moments and the general bad vibes all around.
Rhysand. Ugh. I remember texting my friends the minute he was introduced to us at Calanmai (a bullshit R wordy ceremony IMO) saying WHO is this sexy night man and why is she with Tamlin when he exists. How he was towards her UTM was purposely done to set up later plot, but in the moments when you felt how Feyre was suffering, in agony and desperation, having his help (and Lucien's!!) set the tone for the switch I believe the reader was meant to make given her chosen partner. Plus the sexy scenes with her in her little outfits did not hurt at all.
The trials were everything - they showcased her strength in every way and made me absolutely root for her as my heroine of the series. Her determination to get through the trials and what she suffered during them honestly only made me hate Tamlin more for his "feigned" indifference. No thanks. The last trial was predictable to me given the step wise progression having bitch ass Tam Tam being the final test. He like barely thanked her honestly. I loved that the high lords came together for her, although again predictable that she is now conveniently one of them. What else can we do though she needs to stick around for a bit obviously.
Overall, this was a great set-up novel that was a fun read (listen). The audiobook was roughly 16 hr long, which isn't terrible and not nearly as long as some of the others in the series. That being said I absolutely devoured this and every other novel in this collection without an issue.
I'm giving this one a 4/5 due to my general distaste for our love interest from the start, as well as some predictability issues I felt made me roll my eyes a little too much, but it was overall a great introduction to a fun and provoking series.
Stay tuned for more reviews!

Look at me, not being on time for my April Immersion Overview as is the usual. (・w・;
First, little blog updates to get out of the way:
I reached 100 followers! Got an influx of people checking out my 1 year update post, and got plenty of nice compliments on my data collection.
For those of you wondering just why I keep up with so much data, it's mostly because it can get really hard to notice how much you're improving in a language especially with something like immersion learning that for people who don't get it feels like a waste of time or a time sink.
Graphs showing consistency, improvement in reading speed, increasing vocabulary counts, and generally just seeing numbers grow turns language learning more fun and motivating for me, and if as a bonus, it encourages someone to try immersion learning then that would be cool!
With that said, whether you're here as a fellow language learner, graphs enthusiast (笑), or just want some Japanese media recommendations, ようこそ!
Also, made a tiny DP change - it’s チト from 少女週末旅行. Pretty sure it’s the first manga series I ever finished in Japanese (not the first one I started since ちはやふる is still ongoing), and I always felt a bit of a ☆connection☆ with  her - between her book-loving personality and being a no-nonsense kind of person, there was no way for me not to enjoy her character. Great beginner anime/manga if you’re not into most beginner recommendations.
-☆-
April has been a pretty good immersion month, as I was able to dip my toes in a variety of media. A bit competitive, too! The club I joined has been pulling all the stops to get to the Top 20 Immersion Leaderboard in it’s first month. I was able to snag the 9th spot among a bunch of people of different comprehension levels (the majority being N1+ since they’re able to comprehend much more and in turn stand longer immersion hours). Lots of tiny complaints though of potential “whitenoising” content (”listening” and “reading” but not comprehending very well just to get a large number to post), but really what can you do? People lie all the time on the internet. Besides, it’s internet points that doesn’t do anything beyond being a little shiny I guess.
Enough about that, let’s get into the nitty-gritty details you came here for!
ANIME
Tumblr media
フルーツバスケット
Might need to rewatch this one. Felt like I didn’t connect with the characters the way the rest of its fandom has. I’m kinda sad about it, since I normally love Slice of Life and Fantasy, and I know this is one of my friend’s diehard shows.
ラブライブ! School Idol Project S2
A filler anime to watch tbh. Nice and easy enough to follow for beginners. Pretty good songs. With regards to it being a show about music and moe, I still 100% prefer K-On! if I’m going to be honest, but for a show about non-toxic idols, it’s good!
魔法少女まどか☆マギカ
First read this as English translated manga when I was 13 or something. Mistakes were made. Let’s all just agree to throw キュウベえ into a pit of fire and never talk about it again. Great ending and a show that really reworked the magical girl genre. But seriously, I was traumatized by マミ’s death then and now, help.
四月は君の嘘
Already knew what was going to happen even before watching this so I didn’t ugly cry like I was expecting. Still got that awful sinking feeling though. 10/10 would recommend for a good cry. Also, I’m planning to read the manga, might enjoy that more, because I’ve always liked it more than anime actually. *shocked pikachu face*
ホリミヤ
Watched before I even finished the manga which felt like a mistake at first until I realized that it perfectly stops where I stopped reading. Nice and comfy anime, the kind I would have loved as a teen. Fun animation too, making parts very dramatic even though it wasn’t really that deep of an issue even in the manga. Just teens feeling feelings. Still salty that we lose bad boy styled 宮村, but I get why it had to happen.
AUDIOBOOKS
Tumblr media
氷菓
Second re-listen. I understand it fine, but it’s very easy to drift off when you can’t catch all the words so I had to replay often. Will have to mine more from the anime/book.
君の名は
I mined from the anime, and was really pleased to be able to follow all 6 hours of this audiobook perfectly fine. Will need to read the book, because I realized just how seamless reading it would be after listening to it with hardly any issue.
BOOKS
Tumblr media
キッチェン
Completed! Read my thoughts about it and see my stats on this post.
君の膵臓を食べたい
Still trudging on with this one. It’s not a bad story, it’s pretty well written actually, I just made the mistake of watching both the anime and live adaptation first, so I know exactly what’s going to happen and it’s killing my motivation to keep reading. I guess reading the book first before watching the movie still applies in any language with me. Really need to 頑張れ and finish so I can move on.
三日間の幸福
Started reading towards the end of the month, mostly because I realized that every chapter is only 5000-15000 characters long, and I was able to read up to 40k in a day with Island most days. Only two chapters read so far though because I got distracted by manga, but it’s shaping up to be a really good plot and potentially a really sad one, too, so I’m interested.
DRAMA
Tumblr media
花ざかりの君たちへ イケメンパラダイス
Heard this was a classic so I gave it a try. Loved 生田 斗真’s character in this one the most especially all his internal dialogue acted out. Also, 小栗 旬 in anything is bound to be a good watch. Simple and fun watch. They dragged the ending so much though lmao
ごくせん
Look, I see 松本 潤, I click. Definitely the kind of show you should watch for some great life advice. Planning to watch the 2nd and 3rd seasons even if there is a terrible lack of 松本 潤, because I love my strong female protagonists, and man, ヤンクミ is such a great character. Need to read the manga, too, if I can find it.
極主夫道
Oof, this was kind of hard. The yakuza talk was throwing me off, but the rest of it was enjoyable. Not really plot heavy as I thought it was going to be. The comedy side of it was fun and predictable after the first few episodes. Overall, pretty good slice of life, family story with a twist.
MANGA
Tumblr media
Read a bunch of manga this month, mostly because I am struggling to find the next vn to read.
おやすみプンプン
Read a couple of volumes (6-7). This manga is so good, but it’s so depressing I need to stop to take a breather every once in a while. Please don’t leave any spoilers. The club has been reacting to me reading this, and it has mostly been a lot of crying emotes. It’s both been enjoyable to see and really worrying. 笑
チェンソーマン
Club recommendation. Only read the 1st volume so far. I really need to get into more 少年 anime/manga. That’s currently my 苦手 genre which is awful because literally all the top anime/manga is 少年 help. I just can’t enjoy it much still even though it’s comprehensible to me.
ちはやふる 中学生編
Read Vol. 1, chill read to me at this point after reading 45 volumes of the regular manga. Look, it’s my favorite 幼馴染 manga in baby format, of course I’m going to read this! 太一 has been a flake way before season 3 confirmed. Don’t come at me たいちはや stans bc I also like his character.
約束のネバーランド
Volume 7. I’m taking my sweet time with this one, because I heard the anime for season 2 sucked, so I’m avoiding it like the plague. This is 少年 how am I enjoying this and not everything else what.
ヲタクに恋は難しい
Enjoyed the anime hated the movie why did they make it a musical that sucked (ps i normally love musicals hated this one)
The オタク jargon is kinda hard to read suprisingly but I do enjoy this ship very much. It’s a lighthearted take to otaku culture which is great because seriously it’s scary out there.
ツバサ -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-
It’s my childhood ship, obviously I will read this again (read in English several years ago). Still as plot twisty as I remember it being (now at a bonus hard level reading it in Japanese 笑). Really enjoyed reading this one (I finished it this May).
-☆-
I’m starting to really dislike furigana in manga. It was a great help as a beginner, but now it’s like training wheels that you can’t take off. I feel like the gains I’m getting from manga is much lower than it was when I first started which makes me both proud of how far I’ve come, but also sad because I love manga. Sad that I might have to start choose VNs over it, because it’s not going to challenge me as much going forward. I mean it didn’t stop me from reading a lot of it this month, but you get the picture.
VISUAL NOVELS
Tumblr media
ISLAND
Completed! See my stats and read my long spoiler filled post here.
ファタモルガーナの館
Picked up this VN and finished two doors (15 hours) before stopping. On the fence about it, because it has been kind of predictable so far, and I don’t particularly enjoy the horror genre. That said, this is more psychological than anything, so it’s probably not that that’s putting me off. The language is not exactly difficult, too - maybe some oddly specific words because it is after all historical fiction (which is one of my favorite genres, btw), and 敬語 is definitely interesting to read for once after encountering so many お嬢様 characters in anime/drama so far.
I think maybe it’s the conversations that are kind of dull - dots (silence) every few clicks that keeps breaking the flow of reading. Probably judging it really harshly too early, because it’s rated so high everywhere, and I just have high expectations. Definitely not dropping it yet though, just taking a break and testing a couple of other VNs before I settle with whatever I end up choosing. It is, after all, going to be another 50+ hour read, and I just don’t want to not enjoy the process, because having fun with the process is a huge part of immersion learning.
Let me know if you’ve read Fata and if I should continue!
-☆-
That’s it for this month!
If you have any suggestions on what to watch and read next, please send me a reply, especially for VNs because I’m struggling over here.

BTS Scenario: Taking Care of Them When They Have a Cold
↳ ♡ NOTE ⇁ time for fluff. autumn season is coming, let me set the mood right here, we’re going cozy 🍂
warnings ⚠️ hurt/comfort, brief mention of sexual tension
⌈jimin⌋ ⇢ Jimin’s cold is unusually subtle. In terms of visible signs, it’d take some time to notice it for someone who doesn’t know him or doesn’t check just how heavy another person’s breath is going. But feedback? You will definitely get. Compared to how he’s pouting about it, which will melt your heart is what I’m saying, the symptoms are understated in comparison to the other members. Taehyung’s cough can shatter an entire neighborhood, Jimin sneezing is as graceful as a gazelle. Mind you, his nose is runny, and the slight fatigue of the first two days isn’t negligible, but the major thing to actively mend is more psychological than physical. In other words, his body does its thing, you don’t have to overextend yourself.
That’s what you have to figure out first to really take care of him properly. After laying him down and bringing both snacks and liquids, talking is what he needs rather than ten thousand types of medications and cool towels all over him. Jimin doesn’t want to see you become sick as well so you don’t sit up close, but at talking range, and you text a lot during the day while you work. He’s worried about not being able to practice and hopes the cold doesn’t show in his appearance. You assure him it takes five days at best and he is okay again and promise a lot of kisses. With that prospect, healing is even sweeter. And, you know the guy, Jimin misses seducing you, so.
⌈taehyung⌋ ⇢ Absolutely enjoys being babied ten times out of ten. Nothing better than you preparing a hot herbal bath. Rosemary, thyme, camomile. The steam spiraling off the water surface looks so relaxing in the candlelight, the classical music you put on sways him into a trance, he lays there for half an hour just motionless. He gets a little tray of coconut cookies on the bed stand, you play the guitar to him, you massage his feet before he sleeps… Which, and he hates admitting it, makes it nice to be sick. By all means not because of the fever, but the extra attentions, the hot chocolate for bed. Taehyung thinks about that twice and concludes something. He doesn’t want to get a cold just to receive this treatment. Not for his own health nor to worry or overwhelm you, he’s not gonna guilt-trip you into being a servant.
So, you agree for later: It’s good to treat him sporadically just because, whenever and wherever, cue Shakira. That Taehyung so enjoys a good healing and mending time and it just explodes when you both have a reason to, that’s rather something to expand to the whole relationship. Taehyung will do the exact spoiling for you, with a romantic twist the way you know him. It doesn’t need a sickness to resort to doing nice things for your partner. At the end of the day, the body will remember it and get sick again because it sees what it gets through being ill. That’s something to squarely avoid doing, a random gesture is good for its own sake, amen.
⌈yoongi⌋ ⇢ Grumpy, murmuring, disgruntled he can’t work without getting a headache, needs a lot of silence to recover so he curls up on his own with earphones in and fifty playlists on repeat. He’s like tch, only thing I need is tiger balm to whip me back into shape. Or… wait. Wait a second. A cup of steaming hot coffee with extra foam he will not reject. Or a plate of fried rice. Anything fried and super crispy, really. Yoongi likes those things, especially when prepared by you. Nothing is more honoring. Actually? I’ll change the initial statement. Yoongi does accept some help. You simply gotta find out his catnip I mean favorite dishes and either know the place to order it from or have some kitchen basics down. Nothing super fancy though, it doesn’t need a God’s Menu. The right seasoning does the trick already.
He wants it mega spicy, sweating out the cold is the way to go said Yoongi’s mom back in the day so he goes by that motto. Love starts in the stomach for felines. If another BTS member drops take-out at the door, even better, that uplifts him greatly. When he munches, that’s the most gratifying thing in the world. Yoongi wants you to eat with him by the bed so that means chili in the bedroom but screw it. All that food and you cranking up the heater distracts Yoongi from his cold and some head pats have him on his way to recovery. And, by the way. He’s kinda turned on by you cooking for him so… the frustration is real, you’re gonna fuck like rabbits once he’s okay again.
★ ⌈namjoon⌋ ⇢ The friendly giant will stay in denial about his cough for at least three days and walk around with way too much medicine in his system. He begs for someone to relieve him, mostly himself, but all those sky-high standards are in the way. Responsibility! Hard work and endurance! Solve it in your head! What is the spiritual reason for colds? How many pills keep you awake for an all-nighter to write an album in one go? What’s next on the schedule? So it goes on, you know the deal with Joonie. You have to kick that leader butt so he finally enters the healing cave under the sheets. Don’t kick too hard though, he doesn’t have Jimin-level cushions. He topples over into his sheets fast anyway, he’s that level of exhausted from his own suppression.
The story goes on, Namjoon feels extremely guilty for getting pampered and still ponders the reasons why he is ill rather than slowing down a minute and closing his laptop for a hot second. It gets a little awkward unless you figure out your secret weapon. What he feels better with is you reading him stories while he rests on the sofa. I’m not kidding. Or if you’re busy or he wants to be alone, audiobooks. That input is like a lullaby to Namjoon who gets knocked out by the soft whispering only to descend into 12 hours of sleep. Ah, he’s namjooning. Yep. His cold will force him into resting, but by the time he recovers, he is six books wiser and has had the pleasure of listening to your voice which he finds soothing. Thankful he is, anticipate an expensive present and flowers.
★ ⌈jungkook⌋ ⇢ Meal and fluid intake: Quantity explosion! Wow, wow, and wow again, the sheer amount that he can snack and turn into what seems even more muscle and more sweetness. Guinness World Record. He knows his system is currently resetting, he wants to hand it the building blocks, he knows the math. Yes, even sick Jungkook is the cutest foodie in the world. Yes, he will eat his veggies. He worries about not being able to work out so you at least help him stretch his legs ever so slightly in bed. He’s missing his boxing gloves like crazy, he wants to see the members in the practice room, he wants his milk. The latter is easy to get for him, and FaceTime comes in handy.
Namjoon does a little motivational speech, and Jungkook feels better almost instantly. Later on, you have to scold him — well, just a little bit — for getting up in all that enthusiasm to do some of his routine on the second day, but he already knows it’s not good for him to get his heart rate up like that. He patiently snuggles in a cocoon of duvets with only his eyes being visible. Until, finally, his red lil’ nose goes back to normal and his lungs feel a lot lighter. Jungkook really hates being dizzy, so it’s a weight off his hunky shoulders all right. Then, he can join you at the dinner table for a double portion of extra Parmesan Spaghetti, and you settle on the couch to bingewatch romantic animes and any Studio Ghibli movie in history.
★ ⌈jin⌋ ⇢ It simply can’t be helped, he even wants to make this funny. Humor really is a never-ending well, Jin is Spongebob’s long lost cousin if you go by his amount of meme talk. He calls himself Rudolph the Red-Nosed Jindeer, stuffs handkerchiefs into his nostrils, draws smileys on his knees with the cream usually meant for a dry philtrum (he now has very hydrated knees, how about that), does impossible contortions to find the right sleeping or reading position. Honestly, you don’t really have to take much care of him nor worry, Jin will cure himself through laughter. The power of positive emotion. Entertainment is nothing to provide for, he’s a one-man show after all. Jin is the least bored when he’s sick among the group, however! It needs someone else to exchange with, you know. No punchline without an audience. Listening is the best thing.
Sit, lean back, see what he has to say. The only thing you gotta actively do is stop him from choking on his own spit after a particularly dead-on joke. Maybe it’s introducing some room for serious time that helps Jin enter a different track. I can imagine that. Some talk about memories, talk about sorrows and issues. Jin is a complete man, but he still has plenty of ’em, demons don’t evade handsome people. And those need to be talked through in a silent minute. Jin also enjoys movie nights with a cup of tea in one hand and syrup in the other, that’s the go-to way to unwind. You can finally go all out and pour him his tea, bake for him, serve some self-made popcorn, extra sticky and sweet, oh yum.
★ ⌈hoseok⌋ ⇢ If Jimin and Hobi ever get colds at the same time, this will be the poutiest contest. They’re the most vocal about it in the group. Hoseok, and that will come to surprise you a little, becomes needy. Not at the beginning where he’s confused and emotional about what’s going on with him (someone who works this hard and needs a fully functioning body is thrown out of their lane even by the slightest symptom), but shortly after. You’ll come to understand how sensitive his body is, almost as perceptive as Jungkook’s actually. His body blows up with a strong fever, a hot man heating up even more is just an explosion of physics.
He needs handkerchiefs, he needs tons of water, he needs music to distract him a little, he needs a heating blanket for his feet once the fever is gone. Granted, every sick person depends on those things, but Hoseok is someone who calls out of the bedroom often because he ran out. He’s not afraid to ask for things unlike Namjoon who would refuse out of overt politeness. You certainly have a lot to do because his cold comes in strong so it’s important you enjoy taking care of him and don’t do it out of obligation. Quality time is what we’re talking about here. It’s not about you doing the things, it’s about the presence. That’s why Hoseok will use his money well and always order proper take-out that’s not just classic fast food, you don’t have to cook or anything.

Since it’s Pride Month, I decided this year I wanted to raid the library for a bunch of different queer books to read. Mostly graphic novels in this case, because I’ve had a hard time settling into much reading lately... thought hopefully now that it’s summer and I finally have my second shot I’ll be able to relax a bit more and dig into some heavier novels again. For now, enjoy some light, queer reads that I indulged in this June.
Tumblr media
A Wolf Called Wander
A beautiful novel I had been hearing lots about. This story follows the young wolf Swift, who grows up knowing that he and his pack are the mountains, and the mountains are them. It’s in those mountains that he grows and learns and loves… until disaster strikes and he finds himself viciously torn apart from his family and forced out of the mountains that have always meant home to him. Forced to survive on his own. Swift then begins a gruelling journey that makes him face injury, starvation, and the everpresent danger of humans as he seeks a new place he can call home, and new people with whom he can form a pack.
This is all based on the true story of a tagged wolf known as OR-7, following the unbelievable route he took through Oregon and northern California! It was a very neat read, and I’d definitely recommend it if you enjoy stories told from an animal’s perspective because this book is a master class in it.
Tumblr media
Bloom
I decided for June to try to read a handful of different queer books, and this was one of the first graphic novels I picked up. It is a super sweet story and the art is lovely. It’s about Ari, a boy who has just graduated high school and is now desperate to move away from his small town and his family’s struggling bakery, to join his band in the city where they hope to make it big. An agreement is finally reached: Ari’s father will let him leave, if he can find someone who can replace him in the bakery, which is how Ari meets Hector, someone who sees artistry and peace in baking. For anyone that’s read Check, Please, it gives off those types of vibes!
Tumblr media
Boule et Bill: Bill est Maboul
Another book of Dupuis comics, because I can’t get enough of them! This one I just stumbled across and ended up reading on a whim but it was very cute. Geared younger than the others I’ve read, but still quite funny. It’s the charming hijinks of a young boy, his dog, and the family they live with. Each page or so is a different stand alone joke, a bit like Calvin and Hobbes except expanded beyond a single strip.
Tumblr media
Chicken Run: Chicken Pies for the Soul
This was a ridiculous urge I got and had to follow. I recently rewatched Chicken Run (which is, of course, one of the best movies ever made) and felt the need to see if it had ever been novelized. Well, I found something better than a novelization! This is a chapter book with “advice” and stories written by the various characters, post-movie. It really does a good job with grasping the different characters’ voices and making something simple and funny out of it. It was very cute (and available on The Internet Archive if anyone else feels like reading something ridiculous!)
Tumblr media
Doodleville
I picked this up on a whim and honestly, I shouldn’t have bothered. It was not very impressive. Very mediocre, awkward feeling artwork, and a story that only slightly manages to redeem it. The concept was kind of neat, and I did like how the ending came about, the rest was rather… plodding. I did not like the main character at all, her friends felt very Intentionally Quirky Aren’t We Cute :3 in a way that just tries too hard, and… yeah. Meh. It technically gets the “queer graphic novel flag” but it’s so in-passing that it feels rather excessive to give it that.
If you are interested, it’s about a world were doodles actually exist as living creatures that can be drawn into existence (the rather unsettling implications of which is never fully explored). This is all well and good, until the main character draws a monster and takes it with her to her art club... where it begins ravanging not only her doodles, but those of her friends. Together they need to work together to figure out how to stop this menace.
Tumblr media
FRNCK v4
Phenomenal. I adore the FRNCK series, and book four wrapped up the first “cycle”, revealing several of the big secrets dogging the series so far, and changing how things are going to be able to run in the future.
If you haven’t seen me talk about it before, FRNCK is a graphic novel (a franco-belgian bande dessinée) about a young orphan, Franck, who’s chafing under the constant parade of uninterested foster parents that visit the orphanage he lives in. Determined to learn about his mysterious abandonment instead, he flees the orphanage… but finds himself tumbling through time, landing among a family of cave-people who rather reluctantly take him in and ensure this modern boy doesn’t die in the strange, dangerous new surroundings he finds himself in. You can get these ones in English as e-books, so if you want a really kickass graphic novel series to read please try these.
Tumblr media
Haikyu!!
I’ve heard so much about Haikyu!! that I finally gave in and picked up the first book from the library. And I gotta say, it’s well worth the hype! This series really does capture the best parts of a good sports manga -- which is to say the team is filled with interesting, enjoyable character who all need to learn to pull together, boost each other’s strengths, and cover for each other’s weaknesses. Love me some found family tropes and this series oozes it in the best possible way. And then you also get some very cool action scenes as it makes high school volleyball seem like the most intense thing on earth. I can’t wait to continue it
Tumblr media
Queer Eye
I haven’t been keeping up with Queer Eye but I was watching it ravenously when it first came out, and this seemed like a very cathartic book to read… and it really was. It had the same gentle, loving encouragement as the show. It doesn’t expect you to change your entire life, but to learn to embrace who you are, and take small steps to enhance those things. There a segment written (presumably) by each member of the Fab Five, explaining the mentality behind what they do on the show and how you can grow in those areas too. It’s very zen.
Tumblr media
Spinning
I got this graphic novel out at the same time as Bloom, but it was the one that interested me less of the two... though that’s just because I have less interest in “real world” slice of life as a genre and this one is meant to be autobiographical. If you’re into that, you’ll probably love this because it really is stunning. Very pretty, and the format and pacing is all really well done. It’s a coming of age story for Tillie as she grows up dealing with a crosscountry move, complicated friendships, a burgeoning attraction to girls, and attending competitive figure skating classes.
Tumblr media
This Place: 150 Years Retold
A stunning and heart-wrenching graphic novel told by a collection of different First Nation’s authors/artists, recounting oral histories about the 150 years since the colonialist formation of the country known as “Canada”. In other words, this is a post-apocalypse story, but one that really happened and that entire peoples are still fighting to survive. It’s very eye opening and beautifully told. Very strongly recommend the read, especially if you’re at all interested in history.
Tumblr media
Torchwood: Serenity
Whoops, not technically a book. I had thought these were technically audiobooks at first, but rather they’re audio dramas that were played on the radio. Still, I decided to include one because I’ve been listening to them like a person possessed and they’re too fun not to at least mention. Let me indulge in my obsessions.
If you don’t know Torchwood, it’s a BBC series that spins-off from Doctor Who, focusing on the enigmatic and flirtatious Captain Jack Harkness, who is running the covert organization known as Torchwood, which is tasked to protect humanity from and prepare them for alien contact. It’s goofy and campy but also more adult and heavy than Doctor Who tends to get, so it is (in my opinion) a really fascinating series. Though it also has content warnings coming out the wazoo so maybe make sure it’s for you before delving in.
Serenity specifically is possibly one of the best Torchwood stories I’ve ever experienced. The Torchwood team concludes that there’s an undercover alien hiding in the idyllic gated community Serenity Plaza, and so that means it’s up to Jack and Ianto to go undercover as a happily married couple and flush out the alien without being discovered first. Even if it means being sickly sweet together, pretending to care about the local neighbourhood barbecues, and actually caring a bit too much about the Best Front Lawn competition. What is truly magical about this one, is that it manages to make it a Fake Dating AU despite the fact that Jack and Ianto are actually dating in canon. But they’re both used to dating as a pair of alien hunters with insanely dysfunctional lives, and who now need to figure out how to deal with domesticity. It is marvellous.
Tumblr media
Wilderlore: The Accidental Apprentice
A middle grade novel that felt a bit like a cross between Harry Potter and Pokemon. It’s about orphan Barclay Thorne who wants nothing more than to be accepted in the rule-bound village of Dullshire, and live up to his apprenticeship as a mushroom farmer. He certainly wants nothing to do with the fearsome Beasts who live beyond the village, deep in the Woods or the sinister Lorekeepers that bond with them. It was, after all, a Beast that had killed his parents all those years ago. But when he finds himself at the very edge of the forest, hunting for an elusive mushroom, he is suddenly unable to avoid any of that. Not when a wild girl and her bonded dragon appear to summon a horrible Beast and end up getting Barclay bonded to it instead. Now, if Barclay ever wants to be welcomed back into his home, he has no choice but to venture into the Woods and find a way to sever the bond imprisoning him to the massive, monstrous wolf now imprinted on his body as a living tattoo.
I honestly can’t decide how I felt about this one. I feel like it’d be a really fun read for maybe a grade 5 to 7 student? I was a bit more meh about it. It was fine, but it was very hard not to draw unfavourable parallels to Harry Potter. But for a kid who’s never read Harry Potter? Or even an adult that has but is looking for something different to scratch that itch, this might be a good book to try. I’ll probably try reading the second book when it comes out.

My notes and (a few) theory noodles on "Fazbear Frights #4: Step Closer" ...
Tumblr media
Once again, no epilogue commentary, since the audiobook version I listened to didn't include it.
The first two stories are good for theory fodder, but the last story is much more straight-forward and canon-based, so I don't have much to say about that one.
Obviously, spoilers under the cut.
Tumblr media
"Step Closer"
- the story opens with our new hero, Pete, suffering a nightmare wherein he's chased around his bedroom by Foxy. The nightmare ends when Foxy's hook slams into Pete's eye, popping it in its socket, and Pete wakes up with a scream.
- "Pete was ... drinking cherry cola while chewing watermelon gum."
- Pete is 16 y/o and, in the wake of his parents divorce and his mother getting sole custody of the kids, he is the unwitting constant babysitter to his younger brother, Chuck. Their mother has dumped a lot of responsibility on Pete since splitting from their father, telling Pete that he's "the man of the house" now, while Pete just wants to be a simple high schooler, not play parent to his brother.
- Pete perceives Chuck as little more than a "whiny little snot" who's always upset about something or other.
- Chuck has asthma and braces. He also loves RPGs, apparently.
- Chuck wants to hang out at Freddy's Pizzeria with his friends after school and, although he hates the place himself, Pete is forced to take him and watch over him while his brother plays arcade games with friends. While here, Pete overhears two employees talking about how the Foxy the Pirate animatronic is down for maintenance.
- Pete runs into one of his classmates/friends, a girl named Maria, who is also stuck here with a younger sibling. We learn that Pete used to play football in their school, but kept getting in trouble for "unnecessary roughness and having a bad attitude" so he just got frustrated and quit. Maria invites Pete to come hang out with her and some other classmates later that evening, but Pete has to decline due to his new job of minding his brother. He's not happy about having to turn down an opportunity to hang out with his friends, and snippily calls his brother "Chuck the chump."
- "Everything was about Chuck. Nothing mattered when it came to what Pete wanted."
- "Dad left. Mom was off in her own little world. They just thought they would put Pete in charge of Chuck, because they didn't have time to deal with him themselves. But Pete had never signed up to take over their responsibilities!"
- "Pete just had so many emotions, he didn't know what to do with them. Sometimes he felt like a ticking bomb about to go off. ... He hated these feelings. He hated everything sometimes."
- Giving into his anger, Pete grabs Chuck by the arm, bullying his brother into going to the maintenance closet with him. Chuck has always been scared of Foxy, and cries and hiccups the whole way.
- The boys see melted candles and strange symbols on the floor, but Pete is too focused on Foxy to think much about them. Activating Foxy's control switch, he picks Chuck up and forces him onto Foxy's little stage area, but Chuck panics and manages to fight Pete off and run away. In their fight in the maintenance room, Pete's shirt gets caught on a nail stick out from somewhere, and he is trapped alone with Foxy.
- Foxy finally begins moving, dancing and singing a song about losing an eye and an arm to become a pirate, Pete is trapped in place, too close to the moving robot. Pete feels that the robot is glaring down at him, and is too scared to move. Once Foxy has powered back down, Pete is able to move around, although he is disoriented for a minute, and take a minute to even remember where he is or why he came back there.
- Chuck is too scared of his brother to tell their mother what happened.
- Their mother announces over dinner that she's decided they should all become organ donors, saying that it's "something they can do as a family." (Which is just... the weirdest thing ever??? Literally what the hell, woman???) Pete snaps at her, asking her why she wants to "get rid of their body parts," but she just waves off his concerns. Neither boy is happy with this announcement, and are both understandably confused as to why their mother would sign them up to be organ donors just on a whim, and without consulting them.
- The nightmare sequence from the opening of the story takes place that night / the next morning, and Pete's morning begins with him running to the bathroom and slamming the door behind him. Chuck stands outside the bathroom door, worriedly listening to his older brother heave into the toilet.
- Chuck wishes his relationship with Pete was better, and mostly just wishes his brother was happier, and not so angry all the time.
- Their family's last name is 'Dinglewood,' apparently. Pete gets mocked and bullied at school, and gets called 'Dingleberry.' (Which, in parts of the United States, is an insult along the same veins as 'idiot.')
- Pete doesn't remember his nightmares the next day, but he feels exhausted, like he spent the night fighting for his life. He also feels anxious, like he's in constant danger. But he still goes to school anyway. In school, one of his classes is dissecting frogs, but he trips, and almost gets one of the dissection scalpels in the eye.
- Pete gets a text from his mother asking him to pick up her order from the butcher shop on his way home from school. He goes, even though he feels nauseas and dizzy, refusing to tell her that he's sick. At the butcher shop, a meat cleaver mysteriously falls from a hook hanging from the ceiling, almost slicing off his hand. The butcher remarks that it's nearly impossible for any of his implements to fall off their hooks, and assumes that Pete was playing with the knives and stuff.
- Stressed, Pete chugs cola and chews gum as soon as he gets home. He's hungry, but too nauseas to eat.
- Belatedly, he realizes that he didn't pick Chuck up from school, and that, due to his getting sick in the bathroom that morning, Chuck was running late and didn't catch the bus. Chuck went to school and returns home by himself without any fuss, and promises not to tell their mother. (Pete is supposed to accompany Chuck everywhere, and their mother would lose it if she learned "her baby" was out by himself.) The two brothers get into a fight, but then Chuck, knowing that Pete hasn't eaten anything all day, makes his brother a PB&J sandwich as a peace offering.
- The boys talk about their mother's new interest in organ donation. Chuck realizes that the conversation makes Pete uncomfortable, and proceeds to heckle his brother by describing in detail how doctors cut open donors' bodies to get the organs. Pete nearly throws up again, and is forced to retreat to his room.
- Pete chews a lot of bubblegum (watermelon flavor) and drinks a lot of soda and energy drinks throughout the story. They seem to be his go-to things when he's stressed or angry.
- Pete passes by a construction site on the way to school the next day, and is forced to walk under some scaffolding. A blade flies out of a buzz saw, and almost cuts off his hand when he reaches up to deflect it on reflex. His wrist is cut, and the sight of his own blood is enough to make Pete nearly pass out. Construction workers come to make sure he's okay, and medical responders are called.
- His mother frets and worries over him at home. She's so worried about him, she wants to rearrange her work schedule so she can drink him and Chuck everywhere from now on, not wanting anything to happen to them. (Their mother reads to me like a person who has already lost someone, and is really anxious over the prospect of losing another. Which fits with the whole 'Pete and Chuck being stand-ins for the Afton brothers' bit, since the Afton brothers are canonically raised for at least a bit by a single parent who has already lost a child and would believably be worried about losing the other two.)
- Their father (whose name is Bill... y'know, as in William/Bill. That's not pointed at all. /sarcasm) also comes to check on Pete, to make sure he's okay. It's the first time either of the boys have seen their father in almost six months now, and Pete isn't sure what to make of the attention.
- Dad Bill decides that Pete's injury is minor, and takes Pete with him on an impromptu fishing trip, against Pete's will or his mother's better judgement. On the fishing trip, Pete receives a lecture from his father about treating his brother better, and grinds his teeth through the whole thing, wishing he'd brought his gum with him. He finds it irritating that his parents are apparently allowed to get divorced and upend his entire life without paying any heed to how he feels about it, but he's not allowed to be sad or upset about it at all.
- Bill initiates The Sex Talk, and Pete shuts it down really fast, not wanting to get into it. During the conversation, Pete realizes that his father doesn't believe that his injury came from an accident, and that he thinks Pete hurt himself on purpose; this annoys Pete, who thinks his father should know him better.
- Bill tells Pete that he's always available if Pete needs to talk to someone, and Pete finally snaps, lashing out at his father, who just left him and Chuck with their mother, moved across town, and never visits and rarely even talks to them over the phone. We also learn that Bill works odd hours.
- "[Pete] could just cry right now. But crying hurt even worse than just getting mad, so he decided on the mad."
- While Pete finally vents out all of his frustrations to his father, the wind carries another fisherman's line through the air just as it's being casted, and the hook imbeds itself in Pete's cheek, right below his eye. The line attached to the hook pulls taut, and Pete is almost pulled into the lake they're fishing on, but is caught and carefully pulled back just in time by his father, who uses a hunting knife to cut the pulling line. Pete is overcome by the pain and the fear of almost losing his eye again, and just bursts into tears in his father's arms.
- Their mother (Audrey, apparently) blows a gasket over this new incident. She's angry that Bill took Pete out against her will, and that her son got hurt again because of it. Chuck watches in concern as Pete is trooped through the house, his face bandaged up; Pete is clearly a wreck by this point, physically injured and emotionally spent.
- Chuck goes to check on his brother while their parents fight in the background. He's never seen his older brother look so scared and vulnerable, and it doesn't sit well with him. He gets Pete to tell him about all of the incidents, and decides that he's going to figure out what mysterious force has it out for his brother.
- The following day sees Pete spending time in Chuck's room, the only place where he feels safe, and plays video games with Chuck. It's the first time in a long time that the two brothers enjoy spending time together. When alone, Pete watches a lot of TV, vaguely aware of his mom hovering nearby, making sure he's okay.
- Chuck hypothesizes that Pete needs to face the Foxy animatronic again, recognizing the pattern of Pete almost losing an eye or an arm, much like the song he heard the robot singing. Pete gets angry, accusing Chuck of trying to scare him in retaliation for all the times Pete has messed with him over the years. He throws Chuck out of his room, and, once he's alone, begins crying to himself.
- That night, Pete has trouble sleeping, feeling like he's being watched, and thinking he sees something moving outside his window. He hears something open the backyard gate, and then thinks he hears a door opening, and footsteps in the house. He stays in his bed, trying to convince himself that he's only imagining it, even as he hears his bedroom door open and footsteps approach his bed. Finally, he looks up to see Foxy standing over him, just as the robot's hook comes sailing down at his face. He gets up to run, but the robot's hook pops his eye, and the robot's foot crushes his hand, then tears his hand completely off. Pete wakes up from the nightmare screaming in terror and phantom pains.
- On Monday, Pete walks into school, and almost walks back out again when coming face-to-face with a sign for the school upcoming pirate-themed homecoming carnival.
- Pete talks with his friends before school, and, when nothing goes wrong the rest of the day, he starts to feel better. Like everything is back to normal, and like he's just as safe as he's ever been, and not under some weird robo-Fox curse. That is, until he visits a booth his friend Maria is running at the school carnival and gets his entire hand caught in a Chinese finger trap. He is unable to get it off, and it gets tighter and tighter even when he isn't doing anything, cutting off his circulation. Maria apologizes and cuts it off of his hand when she sees how panick-y he's getting; by the time she gets it off, Pete's circulation is so bad that his hand now looks purple. Genuinely upset by what just happened, Maria tries to apologize to her friend again, but Pete runs off in a haze.
- He ends up in a mirror maze, and gets lost quickly. He runs into a dead-end, alone, only to see a fox-faced pirate in the reflection behind him. Panicked, he begins running through the maze, trying to find the exit. The fox pirate follows him in the mirrors. Eventually, Pete escapes by punching the fox pirate in the nose, then running away while the fox pirate "puts a hand to his mask." (This makes it sound like he was being chased by another person in the maze, who just happened to be wearing a pirate costume a fox mask for some reason, but then why did he only see their reflection, and not their body beside him?)
- Now fully panicking, Pete runs blindly without looking where he's going. He runs past a dart-throwing booth, and gets hit by darts that stick in his hand and face. He runs past a parrot that calls out "Lose an eye! Lose an arm!" and he nearly goes ballistic. He gets grabbed by a teacher, who tries to calm him down, but Pete starts babbling to himself about "he's after me" (meaning Foxy) and "he was right, and I need to apologize" (meaning Chuck).
- "I have to go back to the point of origin, where it all began. I have to face the villain."
- Hysterical, Pete runs away, wanting to get to either his brother Chuck or the Foxy animatronic, not minding when he slams into things and bruises himself on the way. He pulls out his phone and leaves a message for Chuck, apologizing for his treatment of his brother, and saying that he's going to go back to see Foxy. This is when he runs into the street, not paying attention to anything around him, and is hit by a truck.
- Hearing the message from his brother, Chuck escapes school, heading straight to Freddy's, refusing to let his brother do this alone. He tries to get to the maintenance room undetected, and, once there, he looks around with his flashlight, trying not to cry or hiccup from fear. He gets worried when he can't find his brother, and tries to call Pete, crying and hiccupping heavily when he gets no answer.
- "This wasn't about his fears. This was about *his brother.*" Good on you, Chuck!
- Chuck decides to get a closer look at Foxy, wanting to learn why the animatronic has been bothering his brother so much. He gets interrupted by a call on his cell phone, and he hears his father's voice when he answers. Sounding terribly sad and broken up, his father tells him about Pete's accident.
- Chuck joins his parents at the scene of the accident, and finds the three of them standing in front of a gurney. Pete's body is on the gurney, and Chuck watches as his brother is taken away in a body bag, and, suddenly, he no longer has a big brother.
- Pete's spirit lingers, attached to his body as it's taken to the hospital. One of the doctors examining his body remarks that Pete's eyes are frozen open. Realizing that he's dead and, as an unwitting organ donor, about to be cut open for parts, Pete begins hysterically crying out for his parents, knowing they can't help him but calling out anyway, saying he's "not ready to give up his organs!" and insisting to the doctors "You can't take my organs before I'm dead!"
- The doctors need to remove Pete's hand and eyes first, as they're a match for an existing patient and they need to be put on ice and prepped quickly. Hearing Foxy's pirate song in his head, Pete is forced to watch as his body is taken apart.
- Several weeks later, Chuck feels lonely at home, and keeps hoping to turn around and find Pete standing there. His father has moved back in, both mom Audrey and dad Bill wanting to start their marriage again, trying to move past the tragedy. They've closed the door to Pete's room, leaving it as an untouched memorial to their lost child. (Is this why Elizabeth's room is seen empty in FNAF4? She's already gone, but the family keeps all her stuff in memory of her?)
- Chuck feels the need to get back to Freddy's, to see Foxy. He's replayed Pete's message over and over in the past weeks, and he needs to know why his brother is dead. He feels out of place at Freddy's, a place of birthday parties and games and happiness, while he feels nothing but loneliness and sadness. Once again, he sneaks into the maintenance room, and goes straight to Foxy's stage.
- "This is for you, Pete! I'll beat the villain, and finish the game!"
- But, Foxy doesn't show. There is no pirate song for Chuck to hear. There's nothing but silence and emptiness, and Chuck is left without any answers.
- ... So... Pete and Chuck are pretty obvious stand ins for the Afton boys, right? An angry older brother that bullies his wimpy, crybaby little brother? That sounds pretty familiar.
- It doesn't help that their dad is literally named 'Bill.' Or that the angry older brother gets suddenly killed, and his organs removed (akin to Michael getting scooped).
- So this basically tells us what had previously been implied a few times: Michael doesn't particularly dislike his brother, but is mad at William/their mother, and doesn't like playing constant babysitter, so he takes all his anger out on his brother, who is smaller and can't fight back.
- I think this story also tells us that William really *does* care about his kids, even if he doesn't always show it. At least, that's how Dad Bill read to me.
- I liked that it was pointed out that Chuck likes RPG games, and that Pete has this safe, calm period where he's just hanging out and playing these games with his brother. It reminded me of my favorite theory for the 'FNAFWorld' game, which is that the game is created by Crying Child haunted arcade cabinets in an attempt to communicate with his brother, Michael.
- But also, like... The boys saw evidence of a ritual of some kind being performed on Foxy??? And that's never explained or brought up again??? Wth??? (EDIT: apparently this relates to the epilogue somehow. I'll have to look up the epilogue at some point to make any further commentary.)

"Dance With Me"
- our main character, a young woman named Kasey, snatches a mother's purse outside of a "kiddy restaurant" called Circus Baby's Pizza World; the woman and her two small children (a boy and a girl) are understandably upset
- Kasey is homeless, and has been since her mom (a neglectful, abusive woman who never wanted to be a mother) and her mother's boyfriend (an equally terrible person) kicked her out of her home when she was only 16. At this point, Kasey lives in an abandoned warehouse with two men named Jack and AJ, who are her fellow thieves and partners in crime.
- (Boy I hope "AJ" here is named after the dude from "Random Encounters." That would be pretty cool!)
- among the other more useful things in the woman's purse that Kasey stole, there's also the candy and toys that the kids got from the restaurant. One of the items is a pair of cardboard glasses, which, when Kasey decides to try them on, show her a blue-tint of the world around her and an image of Ballora dancing in the distance. At first, she only sees Ballora outside of Circus Baby's Pizza World, and the first time it happens, she's filled with a sudden emptiness and desire for love and beauty, two things she's never had in her life. Her partners, Jack and AJ, don't see Ballora when they try them on.
- Wondering if Ballora only shows up outside of Circus Baby's, Kasey tries them on in a different location. This time, when she sees the dancing robot image, it makes her dizzy and fills her with unease.
- AJ and Jack love partying and drinking when they can steal the cash for it, but Kasey grew up with a mother who went out partying and came home late, wasted and no use around the apartment, and Kasey wants nothing to do with that lifestyle.
- Kasey has never even heard of the character Ballora up until yesterday, but now she can't stop thinking about the dancing robot, and even has random dance related words popping into her head out of nowhere (including "pirouette" and "twirling")
- Kasey goes for a walk through a park, casing out the neighborhood for a potential spree she and her partners will go on later that evening. In the park, she watches enviously as small children are watched and cared for by loving mothers. She becomes overcome by the desire to see Ballora again, and puts on the glasses, smiling as she watches Ballora dance through the park.
- At this point, it becomes clear that, although she should just be a holographic image on cheap plastic/cardboard toy glasses, Ballora is affecting the world around where she appears to be dancing. As she spins in place at the park, the falling leaves flow around her, caught up apparently in the wind caused by her movements. Kasey also notices that Ballora appears to be closer to her, as she can now make out more details about Ballora's design than she could before.
- (In "Coming Home," we will learn that ghosts can't be seen by the living, but they can affect the world around them, including making leaves move in the air around them in this same manner. So could this mean that Ballora is and/or represents someone who's died?)
- "[Ballora's] face was clown-like, but, unlike most clowns, Ballora wasn't smiling." ... "Ballora was looking at Kasey and didn't like what she saw."
- Understandably, Kasey doesn't appreciate being judged by an imaginary robot.
- That night, Kasey steals another purse, this time from a college student outside a dance club. She goes to cut the purse straps with scissors, but gets bumped from behind, and ends up accidentally slicing the girl's arm. This upsets her just as much as her victim, and she runs away quickly.
- "Kasey hadn't meant to hurt her. ... Spilling blood changed things." "Kasey hadn't meant to cut her, but she couldn't exactly claim to be innocent."
- "It hadn't been worth the effort, or the bloodshed."
- Kasey and her partners walk past the same park again, on their way to case another location. Kasey notices the leaves still spinning in the same way they were yesterday, when Ballora was dancing in that spot. She puts the glasses on and sees Ballora still there, as though she never left.
- Kasey gets the feeling that Ballora is getting closer every day.
- She wants a second set of eyes, and Jack and AJ agree to try the glasses again. When they see nothing, when she clearly does, they worry about her mental wellbeing. Jack takes the glasses from her and, while she watches, throws them away in a nearby dumpster, which instantly fills Kasey with relief. "No glasses, no problem."
- While Kasey feels better without the glasses (and thinks clearer, much to her partners' relief), she goes to get them back. She worries that Ballora will somehow follow her, glasses or no, and she wants to at least be able to see her potential attacker coming.
- When brainstorming where to strike next, one of the guys suggests purse/wallet snatching at Circus Baby's again. Kasey is immediately repulsed by the idea, afraid to go back to that place.
- That night, she becomes paranoid that Ballora is coming for her. (When Kasey first saw the dancing image of Ballora, she thought the dancing robot was beautiful, and the image filled her with a longing for a mother's love; now that Ballora is closer, and Kasey can see her better, she's afraid of the dancing robot.)
- "[Ballora] was beautiful and horrible at the same time."
- Too afraid that Ballora will get her if she stays in one place for too long, Kasey packs up her stuff and runs away, leaving her partners behind. She knows she'll miss Jack and AJ, as they "were like brothers to her." (Two brothers and a sister, you say???)
- Hopping a bus to go to Memphis, Kasey ends up sitting next to a motherly old woman. The old woman is kind, holding genuine conversation with Kasey, and even sharing food with her. The old woman recognizes that Kasey is running away from something, and offers her the advice that "problems tend to follow you, and catch up with you eventually." (That's not forshadowing at all, I'm sure. /sarcasm)
- In a new town, Kasey gets a job doing the dishes at a diner. She gets caught stealing tip money from the head waitress, and the waitress yells at her and tries to get her fired. For some reason, this incident reminds her of Ballora (I think possibly the waitress' attitude reminds her of her mother, and that in turn makes her think of the confused feelings that Ballora gives her) and she decides to put the glasses on again when she goes outside. Seeing the dancing robot makes her feel scared and dizzy.
- Kasey has a dream where she goes to a theater and watches Ballora perform. Ballora dances under purple and gold signs that read "Liar!" and "Thief!" and "YOU"
- The next day, Kasey runs away again. She puts on the glasses again, telling herself that this is the last time, and sees Ballora is now only a few feet away from her (20 steps, apparently). She admits to herself that she didn't really make a "fresh start" for herself by running away, and that, like Ballora, her own human flaws and bad habits (stealing, lying, taking advantage of people) have followed her. She decides to go somewhere new and try again, promising herself to get away from her bad habits and away from Ballora.
- She goes to Nashville next, promising herself to do better. She runs into another maternal woman, this one working at a clothing store Kasey goes to (looking to buy an outfit for a job interview). The woman is kind, and doesn't judge Kasey's awkward speech or bedraggled appearance, and makes Kasey feel hopeful for her future. (The woman wears yellow, and mentions having three kids.) Despite the woman's kindness, and her promises to herself, Kasey steals from the store; she sees the leaves on the ground outside start to spin in the air, and knows Ballora is there, watching her and judging her actions.
- "She just kept imagining Ballora's long, sharp nails... her teeth!"
- Kasey runs back to hide in her motel room, feeling like Ballora is chasing her. Inside, she hears a scratching on the window, but sees nothing... until she puts on the glasses, at which point she sees Ballora outside the window, leering in at her.
- Deciding to return the glasses, Kasey hitchhikes back to where she first stole that purse in front Circus Baby's Pizza World. She puts on the glasses once during the trip, and sees Ballora attached to the outside of the passenger window of the truck she's hitched a ride in, still leering at her.
- Wearing a red dress (the one she stole from the store), Kasey approaches the home of the purse's rightful owner. She feels Ballora following behind her, and watches the fallen leaves swirl around her. (*insert "Ballora will follow you" audio clip from Sister Location here*) As soon as Kasey rings the doorbell, fully commiting to returning the stolen items, she sees all the swirling leaves scatter in a sudden, strong gust of wind, and she feels Ballora leave her.
- Kasey apologizes to the woman whose purse she stole (Sarah), and promises to pay her back for everything she stole. The woman forgives her, and invites her in for tea. (This is the second time the name Sarah has come up, I think.)
- Inside, Kasey returns the glasses to the little girl, who is named Isabella and has big blue eyes. Excited, Isabella promptly puts on the glasses, cries out in delight when she sees Ballora, and then starts dancing.
- Mainly, this story just works hard to beat you over the head with the idea that Ballora represents somebody's mother.
- It doesn't outright state whose mother she represents, but, given her strong associate with Circus Baby (Kasey first sees her outside of Circus Baby's Pizza World, and Kasey ultimately ends the story while wearing a red dress, like Circus Baby canonically wears), and the subtle references to groups of three children/siblings (Kasey viewing herself and her partners as two brothers and a sister, one of the maternal women Kasey runs into mentioning having three kids...), and Ballora being associated in Kasey's dream with the colors purple and gold (neither colors being strongly presented in her design, but carrying specific meanings in this franchise, conjuring images of William and Michael and Golden Freddy/the youngest Afton boy), I would say the theory that Ballora represents Mrs. Afton in some way is a pretty decent one.
- Also worth noting -- this story made me think a lot of "1:35 AM." Kasey's character made me think of Delilah in some ways, and some of the ways she tries to escape Ballora mirrored Delilah's trying to escape Ella. The woman that Kasey meets in the clothing store is even described with similar visuals to Delilah's next door neighbor! I don't know if this is lazy writing, or if these stories are supposed to be similar for some reason.

"Coming Home"
- aka, Susie's story. (and anyone In The Know should have a pretty good idea already of what this story may be)
- little Susie has named the big tree in her yard 'Oliver'
- Susie associates people's voices with colors. She also apparently senses things that others often don't, according to her grandmother.
- Susie is 7 years old. Her sister, Samantha, is one year younger than her.
- her mother and Samantha are both sad here lately, and Susie doesn't understand why.
- "Her mom kind of got stuck. Like she was a wind-up toy that hadn't been wound up all the way."
- Susie plays with cooking toys, wearing a pink apron and pretending to be a chef in a restaurant. She has a bedroom with a purple theme, with lots of animal plushies and dolls, which she often pretends are at a big party.
- Susie lives with her mother and sister in a big yellow house with 'gingerbread fringe.' Her father used to live with them, but he left awhile ago, because "it's too hard" and he "needs space." (After finishing the story, I have some... less than kind words about her father, and how he just leaves his wife and younger daughter like this. I understand his pov, but still... )
- Samantha is quiet and cautious, but also has a bad temper, and is constantly angry. Her schoolmates bully her, but Susie overhears one of them say that they "can't blame [Samantha]" for how she acts.
- Throughout the story, Susie complains about smelling something weird, and compares it to old leftovers or rotting meat.
- Also, no one ever directly engages with her. Her mother and sister both speak and answer each other, and they both enter Susie's room at different points, her sister angrily kicking at Susie's toys, and her mother just sadly looking around before bursting into tears.
- (In case it isn't clear, Susie isn't alive in this story. This takes place two years after Susie was abducted and killed, and now she is projecting herself / haunting her mother and sister. Later clues in the story also tell us that her family know what happened to her, how she was abducted and killed, and maybe even who did it; it's unclear exactly how much they know.)
- Susie goes to bed, but is awoken by a strange thumping and tapping sound at 11:50 pm. She goes to investigate, but stops when she hears Samantha announce "There's nothing out there. Back to bed." (This is the first time in the story that anyone has spoken to Susie, but it sounds more like Samantha is talking to herself.)
- Unknown to Susie, her mother, Patricia, talks to her best friend Jeannie over the phone, seeking comfort. She expresses that she doesn't know what to do with Samantha (mentioning that Samantha is 8 years old), or what to do with herself, either. She feels that her happiness was stolen from her, and she hates that Samantha has had her childhood stolen, her little girl forced to grow up and take care of Patricia while the grown woman falls into a depression she doesn't know how to fight.
- Still curious about the strange footsteps sounds, Susie keeps looking out the windows. She sees something big walking around outside in the dark, its head moving around, looking into the house. Finally, as midnight rolls around, she goes to open the front door, coming face to face with the animatronic Chica, who she greets with a sad "Is it time to go back already?"
- Susie, considering Chica's cupcake: "She didn't know what the candle meant. One day? One year? ... One child?"
- Patricia and Samantha both hear a strange sound during the night, but don't know what it is.
- The next day, Patricia meets with Jeannie, who does her best to comfort her friend and help her grieve for her lost child.
- "Your daughter was murdered by a serial killer in a place where she should have been safe."
- Susie was wearing her favorite outfit when she was taken - a hand-knitted sweater, magenta with pink stripes, and blue jeans with rhinestones. She also has her ears pierced, and likes to wear colorful earrings.
- While this is Susie's story, it's not so much a story about Susie herself as it is a story about her family grieving for her. It's a story about the real underlying horror and tragedy of the FNAF storyline - a madman taking the lives of children, turning those children into monsters that are kept in constant states of pain and despair, and their broken families left behind, while the audience can do nothing to stop or fix it.
- After a conversation with a classmate, Samantha realizes that the strange sounds she hears at night could be Susie's lingering spirit haunting her. We learn that the house backdoor, which is in the kitchen, always opens by itself shortly before midnight. (It's opened by Susie's spirit, but Samantha doesn't know that.) Samantha also feels like bugs are crawling up her legs when she goes to bed (probably an effect of Susie trying to climb into bed with her).
- Samantha goes to a therapist to deal with the trauma of having her sister and best friend taken from her. While at a session, Samantha admits that her last memory of her sister is of the two of them having a fight, and she thinks that Susie was distracted by their fight, and that's why Susie was so easily taken. (The poor girl is only 8 y/o and has survivor's guilt, and has apparently had it since she was 6. D: I am going to cry on her behalf.)
- Ghost!Susie gets tired of listening to her sister talk about a math lesson from school, and blows in Samantha's ear. Samantha freezes up and falls silent, terrified.
- Susie haunts her sister without realizing it, just wanting to be near her family again. Her sister, Samantha, only knows that she hears creepy sounds and feels things touching her out of nowhere, and she's understandably spooked by the sensations.
- Susie draws pictures on papers in Samantha's room, trying to ask her sister about the whereabouts of a doll they both shared. Samantha is startled to find drawings she didn't make sitting on her desk, and she doesn't know what they're supposed to be.
- Samantha's favorite story to read with her mother before bed is a book called "the Happy Ghost," a story about a man who dies and waits for his family to join him. It makes her feel sad and lonely, and it makes her mother cry, but they still read it every night.
- Samantha has a nightmare about Chica chasing her through the house. She wakes up only to find that it's not a dream - the animatronic is really in her room, staring her down.
- Susie is attached to Chica, but can't really control her. It's unclear if anyone or anything really is controlling Chica in this instance, as the robot seemed to just sort of... chase Samantha around for no real reason? Samantha is trying to help Susie's spirit move on, and it's implied that Chica is trying to prevent that, but that doesn't make a lot of sense, since (as far as I know) Chica is just an automaton, with no mind or personality of her own. She has to be controlled by something, but if Susie isn't in complete control of her, I'm not sure what is. (This could be a Fetch-like scenario, where Chica feels Susie's emotions and basic desires, but not the real purpose behind it.)
- Samantha finds the missing doll, and finally comes face to face with the ghost of her dead sister, who was apparently still partially attached to the doll (which seems to be the sole reason Susie is able to haunt her family's home). Susie hugs her sister, then returns to the pizzeria with Chica. Samantha is finally able to mourn the loss of her sister.
- I don't really have much to say about this story. The heavy focus on William's victims (both the kids he killed and their families) just makes me think Scott or one of his writing team members was just like "Y'know... I think the murderer gets the spotlight too often. People like him too much. The fans need to be reminded why this guy is the real monster of the story."
- It *is* weird that no dogs are mentioned in this story though, since historically it seems that it's always been implied that Afton lured Susie by talking to her about her dog.

💙🖤Fluffy Eyeless Jack Headcanons🖤💙
AW YEAH SEXY DEMON MAN TIME YOU GUYS
he’s 6’8, built like a greek god, and could bench press you
also the most well-kept of the male pastas
showers every day, brushes and flosses his teeth 2-3 times a day (likely due to the others’ complaints about kidney breath,) wears deodorant, and does his laundry on the regular
one of slender’s secret favorites without trying
he can play the acoustic guitar! he first learned late in high school to impress a girl, and later joined a band with a couple of his buddies. he’s memorized where the strings and tuning pegs are and still knows a couple of songs, and sometimes he’ll play a song for the pastas
ej, jane, hoodie, and masky are workout buddies! sometimes they go for a run or hike in slender forest together and they occasionally pack a lunch and eat together
in school, he was that one kid everyone asked to copy the homework of
because he’s a good influence, he just helped them with it, maybe let his buds copy a problem or two they were really stuck on
however, if he really hated a person and they asked him to copy his homework, he’d get an extra copy of the work from the teacher, fill it out all wrong, and let them copy that one while his real homework was safely tucked away in his backpack
he’s not very proud of it but at the same time he has no regrets
you guys,,, ej is a big softie for dogs
not only has he joined masky in convincing slender to get some proxy attack dogs to baby and call good boys/girls, but he discovered a female hellhound and started feeding her. he named her artemis, and she’s good friends with seedeater
she recently had a litter of 4 or so puppies, and he helped deliver them, and sally got to name them
on that note, he is very sweet to sally, will 100% scare the pastas into coming to her tea party and wear a tutu for her (and maybe brimg cookies)
he’s not one for pranks and stupidity, but he is passive-aggressive as fuck
once, one of ej’s victims had prepared a lovely rare steak with roasted veggies and buttery dinner rolls, and having not had a home cooked meal in a long time (and living off kidneys, ramen, and black coffee,) ej helped himself and brought the rest home hoping to have it for lunch the next day. well, he’d made the mistake of putting it in the communal fridge and jeff ate it all. come christmastime, ej got jeff for secret santa, and so he made a rare steak, roasted veggies, and buttery dinner rolls and put it in jeff’s stocking since he clearly loves it so much.
moral of the story: don’t touch a broke young adult’s leftovers. we will fuck. you. up.
yes yes ik i’m technically 2 1/2 months away from adulthood but still don’t mess with my leftovers >:((
likes horror, sci-fi, and sometimes mystery novels along with nonfiction books (usually about biology but sometimes cody recommends a good chemistry journal) and has a large collection of them in braille and a lot of audiobooks downloaded onto his phone
he also listens to podcasts, his favorites are ologies and welcome to night vale (both fantastic, check them out!)
he and cody are science buddies, sometimes they conduct experiments together
loves heat, HATES the cold, if slender has a fire in the fireplace he spreads out in front of the fire and will not move until some of the pastas pluck up the courage to move him.
he has three tongues, one main one and two longer, thinner side ones, both of which are bifurcated like a snake’s. the main one is pierced, and he once tried to pierce the others so they matched. it didn’t end great, but it could have ended much worse.
the mom friend and voice of reason among the pastas, usually the designated driver if they go out together
that being said, he does have a rather,,,, feral side
once, toby came down for a glass of water in the middle of the night and he found ej devouring poptarts, wrapper and all. when he saw toby shining his flashlight on him, he hissed and flew up to the top of the fridge
they agreed never to talk about it
uses echolocation to hunt
ok, hot take: ej has a tail. it’s kind of like a cow’s tail, but it’s gray with a tuft of brown-auburn hair at the end and six and a half feet long
he also has pawlike hands and feet with claws, which he sometimes paints black
he can be summoned with “pspspspspspsps”
despite all the paranormal goings-on around him and being host to a demon, he remains stubbornly logical
he has tattoos on his chest and arms that look kind of like this:
Tumblr media
he makes nests! he has an ass-ton of blankets and pillows and a few stuffed animals that
if he’s comfy enough with someone, he’ll invite them into his nest and snuggle them ^_^
but only if they’re okay with it because CONSENT IS FUCKING IMPORTANT
he has a few demon host friends in hell that he visits via the hell portal near slender mansion (see slenderman general headcanons +mansion au headcanons to see what i’m talking about), they’ve all bonded over their demons’ mutual bullshit
and speaking of his demon’s bullshit, there’s a rather,,,,,,,,,, interesting crackship i have involving chernabog
you see, the nightwraith is also possessed by a demon: the heart of darkness. after a weird ass roleplay with someone some years ago, i started shipping the two demons. ej and nighty, however, are not together in my canon, and they don’t really appreciate it when their demons make out with each other and they’re both standing there awkwardly like 5 feet away
they’ve tried to break up their demons before, but they’ve not been successful so they’ve stopped trying and just kinda sit there and play go fish or smth while cherna and the heart smooch
god i could go on about that ship but that’s a post for another day
i could also go on about ej but i probably shouldn’t please stop me i’m procrastinating again
or don’t. ej’s amazing
@hell-isnt-that-hot @blue-mask-boii COME GET YALL JUICE >:))

Shall We Date: Worship Me AU - Gabriel (Avatar of Diligence)
What if the MC gets transported to the Celestial Realm instead? What if the angels were the love interests?
Tumblr media
GENERAL HCs
Known as the “Voice of God” and as such, is Big G’s primary messenger to the human world and the devildom
Because of this, he’s pretty well-known in the 3 worlds and knows a heck lot of different people
Also has a beautiful voice, the kind you’d want to listen to in an ASMR, podcast, audiobook, etc.
Then again do you really expect God’s voice to have anything other than a beautiful voice?
Like seriously his voice sounds like warm melted dark chocolate
He’s also Uriel’s younger twin brother
While Uriel is more akin to the cool and comforting countenance of the moon, Gabriel has the blazing warmth of the sun
Perpetually smiling, but each smile holds different meanings depending on how big it is, if there was any crookedness to it, if he showed his teeth, etc.
His close friends and family can usually tell which smile is which, but it’s his twin that can ALWAYS tell whatever mood he was in even just from analyzing his smile
Most of the time however, that smile hides a rambunctious imp that particularly likes playing tricks on anyone and everyone
He enjoys freaking people out and relishes the reactions they make. The more exaggerated the reaction, the better
That time Big G talked to Moses by going into that burning bush? It was Gabriel’s bright idea
Seriously though, that memory of him freaking out is one of Gabriel’s most treasured moments
Although truth be told, his all-time favorite reactions are the ones he least expected
One of his favorite pastimes is trying to coax a surprised reaction out of Uriel, seeing as his brother was normally so stone-faced
He feels that it’s his divine mission to get as many reactions out of Uriel as he can
He enjoys tormenting Raphael as much as he enjoys mentoring their youngest brother on how to speak effectively
A master of the art of speaking, so he knows every manner of using one's voice no matter what their intended outcomes were
Whether it's to soothe, anger, or seduce someone, Gabriel knows them all
But he asks a price for his services. You have to call him "Big Brother" sweetly if you want to even remotely get his attention for whatever favor you plan on asking him
Gabriel enjoys teasing others aside from pranking them
The flustered reactions he gets is always a nice treat
Don’t get him wrong though, he enjoys messing with others but it’s all light-hearted fun on his end and is never done with any intended malice
Rather, he actually makes sure that he never touches upon sore spots for anyone
He’s just a prankster, not an asshole
Out of the seven virtues, he also the one who still gets in touch the most with Lucifer and his brothers
He is a messenger after all so it’s a given he sends and receives messages the most
With how many prophecies, signs, and dreams he has to deliver Gabriel is almost always out and about. So he’s actually the one who’s least present in the celestial realm
You’d usually catch him on the rare times where he’s on break or in-between deliveries
Sometimes when he’s in need of a little entertainment during assignments, he’d spice up his deliveries by changing the method of delivering the messages
Like perhaps he was supposed to give a human a sign from Big G through a dream, but that’s so old-school so instead he delivers it when they’re wide awake and by themselves
He can’t possibly pinpoint the fact why some humans went to loony bins after he delivered their messages
P.S. They thought they went mad because of those “divine hallucinations”
A chaotic force of nature in all his white-haired, molten chocolate goodness
Emphasis on CHAOTIC
Like the rest of his brothers, he enjoys spoiling Azrael in the way normal big brothers spoil their younger siblings
Obligatory noogies, random wrestling moves, cheek pinching, etc.
An advocate of "No one can bully my siblings except me"
Frequently gets souvenirs from wherever he'd last gone to. He doesn't just get souvenirs for him though, he also gets some for his brothers
Limited edition keychains for Michael for example, sweets for Azrael, local ingredients for Cainabel, tea leaves for Raphael, a new book for Uriel, and etc.
For some reason people like giving him random stuff. Like he could just be passing by and one of his acquaintances or even someone who he'd never really hung out with but knew of him had just harvested their mango tree and now and a surplus of them, or ordered a bit too much of this or that and would give him their extras instead
That's why his pockets are perpetually full with little snacks, candies, and all a manner of random stuff
When his pockets get too full he pops up in the other virtues' offices to lighten his load so to speak
More often than not, it's Azrael who benefits from his brother's popularity since Gabriel himself doesn't eat too many sweets
He doesn't actually notice just how good-looking he is and couple that with his beautiful voice, you can see how and why he's so popular
His generally sunny and rambunctious personality has also earned him many fans
A fan of collecting stamps and has hundreds upon hundreds of books which contain every stamp that has ever come into existence
Stationery otaku
Michael once gave him a pen, one of those cheap ones you get at dollar stores with a cute character at the top. He still uses it until today and never leaves home without it
Regardless of how tacky something is, if it's from his brothers then Gabriel is sure to use it with happiness and pride

ROMANTIC HCs
He’s already a normally friendly and handsy type of guy so it’s kinda hard to notice if he’s actually romantically interested in you
Heck, even Gabe doesn’t realize that he’s into you for a good while because he believes the way he thinks about and reacts to you was still included in the realm of being platonic friends
So what if his heart does those little flips whenever you laugh good-naturedly at his antics? When you gave him that little smile of yours that he liked to think was reserved solely for him?
It’s probably nothing when his skin heats up a little bit whenever his skin touches yours even for a little bit
What do you mean he’s always hanging around you? You were his best friend so of course he’d almost always be with you!
He’s kind of like a bird in the sense that his attention span is always moving from one thing or another, but the fact that you manage to hold his attention for so long even when you’re not there was something that surprised and baffled his brothers
Most notably Uriel who was used to Gabriel flitting about, kind of like a hummingbird if he was being honest
Also like a bird, Gabriel gets a lot of random trinkets. Both of his own accord and because people just like randomly giving him stuff and if he deems any of them worthy enough for you, he’s sure as heck gonna present it and gift it to you as soon as possible
He practically preens whenever you accept his gifts (it doesn’t help that his wings sometimes pop out in all his happiness and excitement). Even just a little compliment gets him so happy and excited for the rest of the day
Offers you his wing to touch if you show even the slightest interest in their angel wings
“ You wanna touch them? They’re 100% guaranteed SUPER SOFT. I always keep my wings nice and tidy since I gotta keep up appearances as a messenger, ‘ya know? ”
Gabe doesn’t realize/forgets that to offer someone to touch the symbols of his power, his wings of all things, showed that he held you in high regard
It confirmed your purity of soul, because to be judged by an archangel, a Virtue even meant that you were a special type of soul, a diamond in the rough so to speak
Although Gabe himself doesn’t notice it, his brothers definitely notice his sudden fixation on you. It’s almost worrying seeing him sitting still for once
While most people would think Gabe would be as chill as he normally he is when facing the truth of his feelings...he isn’t
Many forget that he and Uriel are twins, born of the same core split into two by the Heavenly Father. They shared much more characteristics than just their looks
Once he’s enamored by something, this angel shows his almost infallible dedication to it and only God sits above it
Like Uriel, he does his best to observe and learn everything about you, but what’s scarier is that he does it so covertly that you don’t even know he’s fishing for information all the while relishing his time with you
It doesn’t help that as the Voice of God, his charms are nigh impossible to resist or even detect so you sometimes don’t even realize that he’s playing you right into the palm of his hands
Oh but you don’t have to worry though, Gabriel loves you with all his heart and only wishes to court you properly and perfectly. That’s another of the traits that he shares with his twin
You’ll never have to worry about him coaxing you into something you won’t like or is bad for you. He merely aims to show you the true extent of his pure love
Dates with him are always at different locations or generally something new, because there’s so much that he wants to show and experience together with you
Karaoke dates are a fan favorite between you two, because who DOESN’T wanna hear the Voice of God himself sing?
Like his voice is already like pouring warm melted dark chocolate to your ears but his voice is enough to send you floating happily into the Celestial Realm
“ So where should we go to next? ...Karaoke again? Do you really love hearing me sing that much, cutie? You know I can sing for you as much as you want. I’m all yours~ ”
