I don't know how old the posts about Rui and Mizuki being atheists and Rui mentioning Waiting for Godot are, but seeing the two things happen in almost the same scene blew my mind.

Waiting for Godot is inspired by Nietzsche's idea that "God is dead." (Hence the main character's name: God-ot)

Mizuki asking if "God is there when you need him" directly relates to the book. The two main characters wait for a god who never seems to arrive… and question whether he will ever arrive.

i actually read all of waiting for godot in 2023 when writing a mizuki/rui parallels essay (i scrapped it) and i completely forgot the connection there what the hell. the godot reference has always been so interesting to me because it makes so much sense when you consider their stories. like yeah they were both waiting for a figurative someone not like to save them or anything but just to accept them and give them a chance but this person never came no matter how many years they waited. (I also think it's interesting that Rui tries to understand the characters by waiting for Mizuki to show up because like. he knows full well they're not the people each other were waiting for. It's a cool little detail) Considering the way their lives were as well they had every right to start questioning if the people they were waiting for did exist and I think that's where you can apply the god thing. Like they weren't waiting for a saviour but if god was real surely they would have been more fortunate and met that person who would change their life by now. Also just average 14 year old moment honestly.
