I Believe...Steddie

I normally don't mind angst (though I avoid drama fics in general). Miscommunication is the biggest trope in romance, so I'm all for it, but for some reason Steve x Eddie fics / drabbles where Eddie still thinks of Steve as Steve THE KING Harrington always sit weirdly for me. Sometimes, if the Upside Down didn't happen (AUs in general) or pre-UD setting, maybe -- sure, then that could work. But close to canon fics where Eddie lives and Steve legit confesses to him? Always just -- strikes me as wrong.

Finally realized why -- it's literally the antithesis of canon Eddie. Canon! Eddie is quick to acknowledge Steve has changed. He literally runs up to him in the Upside Down while a bunch of madness is happening and where he has every right to be consumed by his own shit-tastic situation, but instead, he's telling Steve how he is a great guy and has changed.

Can Eddie be bitchy and prejudice? Yes.

Does Eddie have grudges against jocks / the popular crowd? Yes.

But he also goes full on bowing gentlemen for cheerleaders (going out of his way to help Chrissy and make her smile) and he's quick to acknowledge Steve's not that same popular AH anymore.

With Steve's bitchiness not aimed at him, Eddie would be eating his Honeycomb and snickering when old habits popped back up, and maybe he'd feel conflicted about jocky Steve, complaining about going to games or something until somebody smacked some sense into him. Totally believe tension and disbelief about one liking the other or some bias about things, but I just can't see Steve proclaiming his love or whatever and Eddie assuming it is a trap or trick or prank or something.

Maybe he'd think Steve was confused. Maybe he'd assume they were doomed, but I can't see him blaming Steve for that or blowing up their relationship IF Eddie accepted the confession and they started dating. Eddie's way more down on himself.

If someone can explain how it makes sense, please do. I'd love to enjoy all Steddie tropes, and that one seems popular lately, but where my brain sees so many problems with them getting to the confession point or even a number of big arguments that could happen afterward due to outside aspects, those two strike me as highly tactile, highly clingy romantics who would be convinced they were the height of discrete while practically fused, constantly touching and being snide little judgy dudes together.

I know we're all like what the hell Jim? about the preview, but, as much as Jim being a homophobic gay tickles me cause I'm ain't shit, I don't think that's what's happening here.

We know he doesn't wants Li Ming to be poor. We know he wants him to be successful and well off. And we also know being gay could hinder that. This isn't America with our legal protections (that aren't even in every state). This is Thailand. I'm fairly confident Li Ming being an out gay could affect him, especially cause he comes from a poor family to begin with. And Li Ming being an out gay with a boyfriend from a powerful and rich family that, Jim and I are guessing, wouldn't be chill with it? Yeah.

And then there's the family aspect too. Jim's sister is homophobic. I don't think we know if that's Li Ming's mom or not, but if you're asking why a homophobe would send their kid to live with their gay sibling, that's the kind of cognizant dissonance homophobes employ simply because I'm guessing she doesn't want/can't afford her son. And even if the homophobic sister isn't Li Ming's mom, we don't know if the rest of their family shares her hate. I'm kinda guessing they do since Jim doesn't seem to see them. So you have Jim, an out gay man who was MARRIED to a man, basically raising his nephew. Who also turns out to be gay. That's a nightmare for someone with a homophobic family because they most certainly are gonna say Jim turned Li Ming gay.

I'm not excusing what looks like Jim yelling at Li Ming, especially for being gay which he can't control, and which Jim certainly knows. Just saying that I understand that Jim is under tremendous pressure, for a kid that isn't his (Li Ming is basically his son but Jim did not have him, Jim did not make him, Jim did not plan for him) in addition to his life going through an upheaval with Wen and I get why he could lash out. Yeah he's 40, but he would have been born around 1983. That's not old. He is doing the best he can. It's not good enough, it's not, but that's not really any one's fault. Li Ming can be mad at him, fans can be mad at him, but I feel for him because he is trying his best in a situation he shouldn't even be in.

He's not perfect. No one's perfect on this show I'm realizing. It's realistic as hell and realism is rarely cute, neat, or logical.

I really can’t with people who say ‘I can’t believe people try to say mike hasn’t suffered homophobic bullying when he got SLURS thrown into his face and almost died from the bullying by the character best known for being “The homophobe” ’ like yeah okay. what characters were seen being emotionally hurt when troy disrespected will’s assembly? oh yeah, mike lucas and dustin, they ALL were shown upset and meant to be hurt by the bullies’ cruel words. what other character was under imminent threat of permanent grievous bodily harm by this ‘known homophobe’? yeah, dustin. and yet, the number of people claiming that dustin has also then ‘suffered from homophobic bullying’ is zero. fuck in s2 billy almost ran mike, lucas and dustin down in his car, but no one can make the argument that the party was subject to ‘racist bullying’ by the ‘known racist’ can they? billy’s cruelty that affected the party stemmed from racist hatred that stirred up in billy aiming at dehumanizing lucas. the whole ‘flying like a fairy’ or jumping off the quarry being the same as will’s ‘death’ is at the most subtextual coding for mike’s queerness. troy didn’t make mike jump because he thought within his head ‘wheeler is a queer!’ and do NOT tell me the writers couldn’t have troy call him a fairy outright because it would have been ‘too obvious’; will got referred to by a slur not 20 minutes into the show and through s1 and audiences STILL didn’t ‘know’ he was gay since s4. Steve called Jonathan a queer in s1 and no one went… ‘guess he is!’ if troy ever once directed slurs at mike, out of thinking mike is queer, as exactly he’s shown to bully thinking will was, then we’d have fucking heard it, because the writers would have written it. the quarry was the direct product of troy lashing back at mike for bravely stopping him from getting away with his homophobic hatred at the assembly, that had aimed at dehumanizing and disrespecting, who was it, yeah will who presumed fucking DEAD btw in some way FOR being queer. literally NO one here denies how traumatizing troy’s bullying was for mike, or that witnessing blatant homophobia didn’t fuck him up for the rest of the show till now, or that it didn’t have life threatening repercussions for him to be associated with a gay person for his best friend, so I seriously don’t know why people act like you shot their dog if you just note and preserve the distinction that the kind of bullying will faced, and what mike did, was not the same. I DON’T get why it’s ‘acting like will has sole rights to homophobia’ any time anyone points out what was part of will’s experience, and not mike’s.
