"Mother! Look! I finally got a tail!"

If I was a disabled mermaid who finally got fitted for a custom prosthetic tail, I'd want to visit my 70-foot-long deep-sea mermaid mother as well!

(This post applies to my interpretation of the Shield Hero)
Shield Hero characters and their parallels/connections to the Genshin Impact characters
So, this is something that has been sitting in the back of my mind for a while now and I really wanna share it. More specifically, I want to talk about how I'm gonna use the Archon quests and, in general, the plot of Genshin to my advantage to further the character development of some characters.
(A bit of context: while not outright visible to people not familiar with the plotline and lore of the game, it will noticeable. In the fanfic, Naofumi has books which, basically, have the whole genshin story, a book for every nation)
Raphtalia - for her parallel is rather easy, Vanessa from the Genshin comics/manga. I think it just suits her, considering the similar backstory and all. In the story, Raphtalia will look up to Vanessa, seeing her as someone to want to be like, someone to relate to
Filo - that's one easy. Filo likes Paimon, she finds her funny and relatable. Maybe Xiangling because she's a chef and all (plus having a god for a pet)
Motoyasu - to be completely honest, I had no idea who to use for Motoyasu's character development. I thought of Childe, since he (Childe) and Motoyasu both were deceived by their teammates (Myne/Signora). But I also thought that Lyney works too, since he too (Lyney) follows the orders of a person he knows isn't good (Arlecchino), just like how Motoyasu keeps Myne in his party even after the trial. Maybe Keaya? With the whole flirty personality and having a bad relationship with someone they use to be close with (could work for (maybe? Naofumi) Myne.
Itsuki - okay, for him, I don't think there is a character that parallels him. I don't think there's a character that he could relate to, only learn from. For example, he could learn from Heizou and he's ideology of stopping crime before it's even committed. He could learn to learn the truth first before casting judgment from Furina (as a parallel to what he did to that one village (do you see my vision???)). Maybe he could learn from Wriotheslay and see how criminals aren't "evil" most of the time, and that they can be redeemed. He could learn from Neuvillette how to find his own sense of justice and, lastly, he could learn from the Rainden Shogun who refused to listen to her people and hurt them, learn how to find his justice the same way that Ei found her own definition of eternity
Ren - he is a bit easier than the other two heroes but I think that the Raiden Shogun works for him, but, just like Itsuki he could learn from her, not really relate. Raiden isolated herself and battled with herself for (allegedly) thousand of years, which is similar to how Ren, after his party members died, isolated himself, only listening to what he wants to hear (Myne) and being convinced that his way is the right way. Maybe also Childe with the whole 'wanting to be stronger' bit but aside from that I don't see anything
Rishia - I feel like she would like and relate to Sucrose and Collei. She would relate to Sucrose because of her awkwardness and shyness but also for her admiration regarding Albedo. For Collei it's probably because of, again, her awkwardness and shyness but also because she can relate to having a traumatizing past and finding comfort in one person (Tighnari (although in this specific case it's platonic instead of Rishia's crush on Itsuki))
L'arc - L'arc, L'arc, L'arc, best character in the series, my favourite character, I'll have to go with Childe. I think that he would like and relate to Childe, from their shared love for the battlefield and a good, fair fight to their cheerfulness, being on the enemy team and having to fight a person they like (Traveller, Naofumi) before becoming friends/comrades. I could go on for hours how alike they are so I'm going to stop myself right here
If anyone thinks that there are characters that I haven't mentioned that fit the Shield Hero characters, please let me know, I'd love to hear other people's opinions!

Wait, that was a stupid question. We already are. Then, my actual ask is, what's your favorite pass time? Like what do you do when ur not on Tumblr??
Let me think. Mostly play video games honestly. DS, 2DS XL, Switch and after I move I'll have my Wii U and GameCube to play games on.
I will sometimes draw and paint, most general art. I do write fanfiction and write stories I hope to be published one day. These are all pretty rare since ADHD and fatigue kick my butt most days.
I watch mostly YouTube as of right now. Typically the gaming side of things with like Markiplier, Call Me Kevin, RTGame, Alpharad, stuff like that, but I watch a variety of content.
I'm on my phone a lot. I mostly just check fandoms for my special interests like the Splatoon subreddit or scrolling on here. Or just checking news.
I'm in the process of moving rn so I've been busy organizing some stuff and putting stuff away.
The only show I really watch right now is Bluey just cause I'm a traumatized individual lol, but I'll get with my friend MA on call and we'll watch videos or shows together. Like, we're trying to watch the rest of The Owl House, but with her busy schedule and not getting home till like 9 pm my time, yeah, we don't really got time to do that.
It really does just boil down to mostly video games and watching something and focusing on taking care of my body since disabilities and unable to get help for em thanks to financial stuff and relying on my parents. So I pretty much just spend time in my room, chatting with my friend MA and my girlfriend, watching stuff which is whatever I feel like, playing video games, and working on the boxing stuff up part of moving when I can. I also love reading, but I have a lot of books I bought for my trauma so they can emotionally exhaust me 😅
My favorite past time is def video games and watching stuff that seems so cool to me. For instance, watching speed runs or Mario Kaizo stuff. Since my hands don't respond well, I could not do a lot of it though I do want to get into speed running one day, so I love watching these people do things I cannot do. I love commentary side of YouTube. I love video essays on stuff I would normally not care about or stuff I haven't thought about in a long time, especially when it comes to lore of pieces of media that I will never care about. I have a wide variety of games and game systems to play, I'll also often play with my friend MA when we get the chance. So those are definitely my favorites. Just doing stuff that lets me relax, turn off my brain, or watch something that will make me almost die of laughter. I've played video games since as long as I can remember, starting with like educational kids games on the computer before I could even read. So they've always been a big comfort for me and a big part of my life and I love to challenge myself now with them and explore a variety of different games.
One thing I wanna get back into is Legos at some point. I miss building with Legos and so probably for a holiday or something or if I can save up for it, I'll just buy myself a nice Lego set to build.
I rambled a lot cause my thoughts are very disjointed, but I hope that gave ya an idea of what I do. I mostly play on my switch these days since it's the easiest for my to access. With my set up in my room, it's difficult to play the Wii and GameCube without back problems or the Wii remote struggling with the sensor bar + I'm moving so I'm getting them packed away. And then for my DS's, it's just I don't keep em charged honestly 😅 though I am actually playing Leaf Green on my DS right now so yay, I finally charged one lol. But yeah, that's pretty much all I do :p with video games and YouTube being the most prominent. I also mostly talk to MA and my gf a lot of the time. They're both long distance so texting is our main way to communicate since we can't just like hang out. But yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm gonna stop now lol. It's basically just whatever I hyperfixate on most of the time.
Edit: Pffft, just remembered. I roleplay with MA a lot. Mostly just comfort roleplays for both of us. I used to roleplay a lot and even had an Envy (fullmetal alchemist brotherhood) roleplay account, but gave it up cause of how fandoms can be and just some personal reasons and anxiety around interacting with people. I do that about just as much, when MA is free of course.

LOVE. though it kinda had a negative effect on me because i had roleplayed as susie online a bunch and that ruined my personality.. but i guess it also helped me find who i really am, so thats good (it was to the point i was sure i washer and i would get upset if someone dressed as her or roleplayed as her on roblox- and before this i had something similar with chara where i thought i was them and then this person i knew said he was sands and thought that would make me like like him. like bro. you cough in my face 24/7 i aint gonna have a crush on you.)

Can you tell me more about Bite like his habits and stuff. I'm basically asking you to go full ham story mode if you'd like.(it's late here and I like reading about ocs)
sorry it took me so long to get to this! i had a couple of things i needed to get done before i could answer this BUT thank you for enabling me!!! i have so much to talk about with him, when i say he's the most developed oc of mine that i've had in a long time, i mean it. i think i literally have a 4 page long doc talking about how people feel about him alone. so. i have a lot of thoughts and feelings about him
also sylv really plays a very key part in bite's lore like. most of what i have for him in the early days really has to do with their relationship and what that looks like up until they get to the SQ.
EDIT as i work on this: i realize you originally just asked about bite and his habits but good lord i am lore dumping so much. i hope you don't mind.
gonna kind of start out with basics here to get the ball rolling.
his name is bite, he's 21 and transmasc. he goes by he/it and it's the youngest of four. two of his siblings, the twins, play more of a key part in his lore than his oldest sibling does. one day i'll find a way to build grim into the lore as well.
bite starts off in the agency as a simple... 1337 agent. this is kind of where i don't have much on him, but my partner and i are building through this a bit. he's kind of reckless and stupid, but he's mostly content to be in the agency for a while. during this point, he's getting along well with acid and gambit (the twins). he's also seen as a valuable asset because he LOVES being distracting, and it's super hard for the AAHW to really... find another grunt or agent like him. he's not even modified, he's just a normal agent.
but regardless. they see him as useful, and usually, he knows how to keep himself out of trouble when it comes to hank or someone else coming after the AAHW.
at some point, he nearly gets himself killed, and that's when the agency kind of steps in and pairs him up with someone. like i said. they don't wanna lose someone as enthusiastic as him. so they do what they can to keep him alive.
this is also where sylv comes in. sylv is more... stealth. xhe's good at what xhe does. and is very confident. bite's used to working solo. it HATES the idea of having to work in a team or with a partner. it's never been forced to do so before, so why is it being forced to now? it's essentially pissed off about this for a little bit, probably for about a month or so.
during this time, bite's just really rude to sylv. he complains about how he wishes he wasn't forced to be in a team with xer, and he proceeds to try and get on xer nerves.
i think they're working together as a team for a couple months before something clicks in bite's mind and he stops being a complete asshole to sylv. i haven't quite worked on this very much so there's not much to say here.
another few months pass and bite just realizes... maybe it doesn't hate being around sylv. sure, xhe's a little scary and intimidating, but xhe's not... cruel. not bad, not towards it. it starts to connect the dots at this point as well and it clicks in its brain that maybe it could be in love. it ends up spending more time around xer, outside of serious things.
at some point, sylv brings up leaving the agency. things aren't going as well as they were, resources are shit and the longer xhe stays, xhe figures, things will get worse. bite doesn't skip a beat before agreeing to leave with xer. this is a death wish for the two of them, and they know this fully well. but perhaps, death would've been better than the fate they had been forced into.
bite brings this up to acid and gambit. acid lashes out, since he's certain that being with the agency is what's best and that he's following in the steps to make things better. acid's certain that being with the agency is what's right, they have to stop hank somehow.
this is where bite and acid no longer get along. the two of them get into a fight over this, and this is also how bite got its signature scar across its jaw.
after that fight, bite's quiet for awhile. he doesn't talk to acid, gambit, or grim. or even sylv. this lasts a couple of days. it's not until he and sylv have actually left the agency that he even starts getting back to normal. it takes him awhile before he's back to his usual, feral, upbeat self.
that fight also fucked acid over. that made him decide that he wouldn't go easy on bite if he ever saw it again. the two of them... their familial bond was damaged. not quite beyond repair, though. not yet.
bite and sylv spend some time working as a duo, not aligned with anyone. they raid AAHW buildings if they have to, but they're only really doing it to stay alive. they're... not quite close yet, not at this point.
it's also during this period of time that they run into deimos and sanford. sylv was working as backup if needed for a particular building, and bite had gone in alone. he runs into the two of them, and he and deimos panic a bit as they both aim their guns at each other. sanford's the one who stops them and tells them to wait.
they work out a truce for the rest of that building, bite helping them carry out their tasks before leaving. this happens a couple of times.
bite kind of... stops being so bitter after it's happened a couple of times. he softens up a little. this unfortunately ends up being part of his further downfall at a later point.
sometime around then, he and sylv join the SQ. they agree that they're better off working with hank and everyone else, they'll at least have someone backing them up and they won't be forced to endure nevada in the state that it was in by themselves.
it's hard giving like actual periods of time based on canon and episodes (i have to rewatch them cause my memory's a little fuzzy) but i'll probably update this info later.
anyways.
they're in the SQ for a little bit before their paths cross with acid and gambit again. since bite's softened up and doesn't quite hold a grudge against acid as much as before, he has a harder time defending himself when acid goes after him. sylv ends up going for gambit.
acid finally gets to bite, and starts shooting, and the fight ends up going back to where they started. sylv's killed gambit by this point. and acid sees. and god, acid sees. he has to hold himself back from actually approaching sylv and starting to scream. that was his fucking twin. his common sense doesn't last long before he goes back to attacking bite, screaming all the while.
sylv is responsible for getting bite out of there before acid killed it. bite's quiet the entire way back to the SQ base, and that softness that had building back up is now gone. he's quiet for days again. deimos and sanford notice after 2b had finished patching him up and let him leave 2b's office/medical zone.
bite still doesn't talk to anyone. his tail is droopy and nearly drags on the floor during this point. he doesn't eat. he doesn't do much of anything. deimos makes an effort to try to cheer him up, kind of memes around, trying to get bite to at least smile. his efforts don't... go to waste, exactly, but it's the first time bite looks at someone in days. the first time he actually acknowledges the world around him in days.
deimos is proud of himself for this. this is kind of where bite and deimos start truly bonding. and this is also where sanford starts interacting with bite more. things are a little awkward, bite's not really entirely present, but... he's making progress.
bite and deimos also begin smoking together after that. it's deimos that actually brings bite back to reality more and more with each passing day, to everyone's surprise.
things never get back to normal for bite, though. there's a bit of guilt that always haunts him. he never quite finishes adjusting. but he's fine with that, he is. nobody really... pressures him into acknowledging it, except for 2b.
it takes bite a while to open up to 2b at all, and at some point, he begins to find comfort in their conversations. that takes a long, long time though.
if i had to estimate, it takes him maybe a year before he's mostly adjusted. he's kind of back to his usual self. he's upbeat, he jokes with deimos and sanford. he picks some of his more reckless behaviors back up, but he's got sanford and sylv reining him in a bit. at this point he also gets with deimos. it takes a little longer for him to get with sanford. but they kind of... end up in this happy polycule. it's chaotic, sure, but they're happy.
i'm realizing i don't really have much else to say past this point. i haven't developed like anything past this so. if you read this far. i appreciate you. i appreciate your interest in my little guys ghdskjhgskj
i'm also not sorry for how long this post got. i really just went ham. you said i could. so i did.

of all the views you had seen, there was little that could compare to him.
6.2k | cavalry captain!jeonghan x gn pyro!reader, genshin impact au, fluff, adventure, drinking, so much flirting, mentions of trauma, honestly this is the sweetest i'm ever gonna write jeonghan
happy inazuma release day!!! it's your local kaeya trash, because i predictably fall for gay bastards that lie straight to my face (example: jeonghan), and i'm here to give you a fic i wrote AGES ago and just polished up a bit to celebrate the release of what is likely going to be my FAVORITE region in genshin impact. i'm japanese so 😅 i have a soft spot. if there's any other gaymer carats out there, enjoy this one. if not, sorry! you can actually probably still read this and understand it for the most part, though you might miss a bit of context of the landscape and the lore.
ps. go tell @babiemingoo that wonwoo xinqiu 🤭
~
your work with the adventurer's guild was always efficient. you received your commissions, you carried them out, then returned for your reward, usually before the sun had even peaked. the rest of your day was generally spent either basking in the eternal sun of mondstadt, feeding cats in inazuma, or enjoying a hard earned meal in liyue, depending on where you decided to stay that week, finding board and paying for it with the commission you had earned that day. your tendency to wander came less from choice and more from nature - you could call yourself a nomad, but generally, you just got bored, and preferred seeing everything teyvat had to offer rather than settling in one place. adventuring was simply what you were meant to do, your mother had told you at a young age.
she, too, had wandered for most of her youth, and didn't stop just because you had come into her life. you remembered getting scooped up because you had wandered off a bit too close to the railing at wangshu inn as a toddler, playing with dogs at the docks of liyue harbor. you remembered the ludi harpastum and the first time you had ever had a sweet honey roast, and the way it made your eyes grow ten times in size before you dug in for more.
when your vision was bestowed upon you, you already knew how to use a sword. it was important, your mother told you, that you knew how to protect yourself. she had a vision as well, younger even than you had, and you had come to recognize the static in the air as a sign that she was angry - whether it was because of an altercation with someone on your journey or because you had secretly eaten the last hashbrown without consulting her first.
she used her vision and a sturdy blade she had owned since before you were born to protect the two of you on the road, but when she felt you were old enough, she taught you how to weild. a two handed weapon that was far too big for you when you were only fourteen, but when your reckless abandon got paired with a spark, you suddenly became far more dangerous than even your own mother. she scolded you for nearly starting a forest fire when you tried to pair the two skills for the first time after receiving your vision, and you both agreed that training was a beach activity from then on.
your mother settled eventually, after you were old and skilled enough to take on the road alone, pulling the many favors she had gathered in her travels to build a home in a small neighborhood south of liyue harbor, nestled in the foothills of mount tianheng, where you visited as often as your wandering allowed.
you had become much better with your vision. more careful but just as hot. quick to scan situations and strategize in the moment, hardly taking a second before jumping into action, slaying hilichurls like you were getting paid. well, you were, you supposed, but you had been doing this long before you had discovered the benefit of joining the guild. you were good at it. you were built for adventure, but revelled in leisure. there was good reason you were able to take afternoons off, and you milked every last second of it.
"you're back in town?"
you grinned, leaning your sword against the wall and dropping your bag off your shoulders before settling at the bar. "for now."
rubin often served you alcohol - when you were in mondstadt, at least, however often that may be - but never questioned you deeply. he would ask how your travels were, and listen to your stories from regions beyond his knowledge, of the cultures that he had only heard of from people like you. he enjoyed them just about as much as any, if not a little more, purely because your tenacious personality brought something more to the table. he wondered, though, how long you intended to keep living day by day, sleeping in different beds every week.
"what's wrong with sleeping in different beds?" you teased, laughing into your wine glass. "if i didn't know any better, i'd think you were shaming me, rube."
rubin simply laughed, knowing your tone by now. "i just wonder if you ever intend on digging in your roots, or if you'll continue travelling forever."
"if i dig roots, you may never see me again. is that what you want?"
"what," he said. "you don't like mondstadt?"
"i love monstadt," you assured him. "but i also love inazuma. and my mother is in liyue, though she might be upset with me if i try to settle too close to her. perhaps natlan would suit me more?" you shrugged finally, the door behind you opening as you finished with "i suppose i'll settle when i've found a reason to love one place more than the rest."
rubin shook his head, a chuckle falling from his lips. "a wanderer through and through." his attention was quickly drawn to the man entering the bar. "ah, captain! the usual?"
"please," the decorated man said, quickly taking a seat beside you despite the rest of the bar being available. "would you like another, wanderer?"
you eyed him cautiously, studying what you could see if his face around the black eyepatch, gaze skimming down his elaborate clothing before looking down at your emptied drink. "sure."
"another for your wandering friend, rubin, on my tab, please." your brain swirled, considering the brief information you had been given and wondered how you had never managed to meet this regular during your past visits. "are you just drinking dandelion wine, or something more fun?"
"more fun?" you asked. "what are you drinking, then?"
"well, a death after noon, of course," he stated. "don't tell me you haven't had one."
you blinked at him. "i haven't."
you turned towards rubin when he laughed at the back and forth. "shall i make two, then?"
"definitely," your new drinking buddy said, then gestured to you. "you trust my taste, right?"
you said nothing, but he accepted your silent smile as an agreeance. "captain," you said finally, thinking of how rubin had addressed him. "of?"
the man turned towards you, his elbow planted on the bar and his cheek on a fist. despite his get up, he had a playful smirk across his lips. "you mean, my reputation doesn't precede me? you really are a wanderer. everyone in mondstadt knows my name."
"everyone but me," you corrected. "as i'm currently in mondstadt."
his teeth shone behind his smirking lips before he sat up straight. "well, allow me to introduce myself." he saluted, his arm extending from his side at an angle - a salute you recognized from the guards around the city. "i am jeonghan, the cavalry captain of the knights of favonius."
"ah, the knights," you smiled briefly, before letting your eyes wander as you thought, crossing your arms over the bar. "i don't see much of a cavalry in the city, though."
he let out an amused exhale. "so i have a bit more free time these days."
"i'm sure the acting grand master is jealous of all your free time," you teased. "poor guy, looks like he's staving off a panic attack every time i see him. you should probably help him more."
"so," he sighed, leaning against the bar again. "you know of the acting grand master but not me?"
"jihoon?" you asked. "of course i know of him. he's all anyone ever talks about around here."
jeonghan nodded once, thanking rubin when he placed two drinks before you. "people talk about me, also, you know."
your lips stuck out in a pout. "jeonghan, you said? doesn't ring a bell."
he rolled his eyes and picked up his drink, holding it out for you to cheers against. you giggled, clinking your glass against his before taking a sip. the golden liquid was sweet, but not like the dandelion wine you had grown to love in this region. it had more depth, a subtle bitterness to it, and a refreshing bubble. you stared after the glass when it left your lips, then looked over to find jeonghan grinning at you.
"i see why it's your usual," you said, taking another sip before placing the glass on the bar. "i could drink too many."
"will you?" he asked.
"not tonight," you replied coolly. "i haven't asked sana to put me up at the guild yet, and if i get there too late, i'll get a cot instead of a bed. unless rubin finally wants to come clean about something?"
the bartender laughed. "how many times do i have to tell you? we don't even have rooms to board."
you squinted at him. "i know there's something upstairs. i'll learn your secrets one day, rube."
"i wouldn't be a very good bartender if i didn't know how to keep them."
"so you're in the guild?" jeonghan asked as rubin attended to another patron. "an adventuring wanderer."
you smiled vaguely at him. "i am. i have to pay for my travels somehow."
he shrugged. "there's other ways to make money. probably more profitable, too."
you eyed his teasing smirk. "i'm not sure i know what you're implying."
"as a captain of the knights of favonius, i assure you, i'm implying nothing at all," he said, exhaling sharply and adjusting on his stool. he leaned over towards you before speaking in a quieter tone. "but as jeonghan, i think you know exactly what i'm implying."
you only laughed, recognizing the thinly veiled attempt to worm a secret out of you. "i outgrew those means a long time ago. besides, when mora gets tight, i can always board up with my mother. i like liyue enough."
jeonghan studied you as you drank again. "liyue's home, is it?'
"for her, yes," you said, looking over to him, but you found yourself looking away again when his steely blue gaze met yours. you thought carefully about how much of yourself you were willing to reveal to this stranger, especially considering how important he was in the rule of the city. "she was a wanderer, too, and ended up falling in love with liyue harbor."
jeonghan made note of the way your face softened as you spoke about your mother. "and what about you?"
you met his intent look again, thinking about how his covered eye somehow made him even more intimidating. perhaps that was its purpose. "what about me?"
"what have you fallen in love with?"
a smile crept onto your lips as you processed his question. "oh, archons, what have i not fallen in love with? the smell of the open ocean in inazuma, the breathtaking temples in sumeru - have you ever been to waterfall city?"
jeonghan merely shook his head at you, the corners of his mouth turning upwards as he put his cheek on a fist again, leaning against the bar. "beautiful?"
you exhaled, eyes wide as you thought of the towering falls and the light mist that covered the city, trying to come up with an apt description. "humbling. there's nothing like it."
he watched your expression, head tilting further. "what a wonderful way to describe a place. tell me more."
your gaze went to him, then away briefly, feeling suddenly shy as you noticed his look. "about waterfall city?"
he shrugged a fur covered shoulder, shaking his head lightly. "about anywhere. describe your world, wanderer. i'd like to hear whatever you have to say."
you wondered if the heat that ran through you was because of the alcohol or the man, but you just took another drink and cleared your throat lightly, thinking of more places you had discovered in your travels. you thought of qingce village, one of your favorite places to visit, because the people are kind and welcoming and the fields are so beautiful. you told him about a tea shop owned by an old man - he insisted you call him pops so fiercely that you weren't even sure you had caught his given name - and it was probably the most relaxing cup of tea you ever had.
"it's been a while since i've gone," you sighed. "i think i'm overdue for a chat with pops and his tea."
jeonghan was smiling when you looked at him again. "the tea in liyue is unmatched," he said, reaching for his drink. before taking another sip, he gestured for you to continue.
so you did. you told him about sakura pond, about celestia city, about the volcanic black beaches. you told him liyue had your favorite people, but inazuma had your favorite food. he clicked his tongue at you.
"what about mondstadt? do we have one of your favorites?"
you smiled, genuinely. "sunsets. the night sky is different here than it is anywhere else. i think mondstadt is the closest we can get to the stars without joining the archons."
jeonghan studied you briefly, his blue eye flicking over your face as you finished your drink. "i think that's an apt observation. it seems your eyes are always wide."
"i travel for the views," you exhaled. "i don't plan on missing any."
he thought a second. "have you been to starsnatch cliff?"
your eyes lit up. "not in years," you said, in complete shock that you could have forgotten such a place. you pushed from the bar slightly, turning towards him, and he noticed the flash of a red gem strapped to your right thigh for the first time. "my mother took me there when i was a kid, but i haven't gone since."
"it never gets old," he said, sipping at the end of his drink. "i've yet to see that view and not be in awe."
"i'll go before i leave mondstadt again," you decided.
he looked to you. "when will that be?"
you sighed. "not sure, yet."
he just chuckled. "would you like another drink?"
"oh, no," you said, standing and stretching your spine. "i should make my leave. i don't like sleeping on cots. i just came by to let my ol' pal rube know i was in town again."
jeonghan watched you pull your pack onto your back, grabbing the handle of your sheathed claymore from where it was leaning against the wall next to the bar. "perhaps i'll see you again tomorrow?"
you looked at him, a vague smile on your lips as you strapped your sword back on. "perhaps you will, captain."
"jeonghan," he corrected. "but i don't believe you ever shared your name?"
"that was by design, captain," you said, and he swore he caught a glint in your eye as you bid rubin a farewell and stepped out of the angel's share.
jeonghan spun back around on his stool, immediately looking to rubin. "do you know their name?"
"no, sir," he said, looking at the closed door. "they've never said."
jeonghan's gaze went to the empty glass you had left behind, thinking about your stories, your sword, and the signifier of your vision on your thigh. "fascinating."
you got lucky - sana had a private room for you, and said you were welcome to rent it for your stay. she said not many people were travelling to mondstadt these days, and that more often than not, the adventurer's barracks in headquarters went unused. ever since the fatui had holed up in the grand goth hotel, it had been harder for you to make extended stays in mondstadt, but it seemed that something was telling you to stick around longer than usual. you laid on the hard mattress - a feeling that was more comforting than most, thanks to your continuous travels - and thought of the charming captain that had made a night of questioning you. you wondered if he really had any interest in anything you had to say, or if he had been hoping for details about something pertinent to an investigation.
you packed a lighter bag in the morning, only bringing along the essentials as you set out for your commissions for the day. that afternoon, you wandered around mondstadt and asked questions. questions about the simultaneously well-discussed and mysterious cavalry captain that had listened to your tales of travel, and answers came easier than expected, though they didn't contain all the details you were looking for. that night, you waited up at the angel's share to brag about your newfound knowledge to the captain that never showed, and you did your best to not let that hurt your ego.
the next day, you made a detour on your way back to the city after completing your commissions, stopping by springvale to enjoy a well deserved lunch and catch up with some locals. you sat in the grass with a skewer of grilled meat, watching the windmills of mondstadt steadily spin in the distance as time passed, thinking about how rubin had asked you if you didn't like it here.
you did, you decided. mondstadt felt different than anywhere else you had been. untouched, almost. wilder. freer. despite being born in inazuma, your first memories being in celestia, or your mother being in liyue, mondstadt felt comfortable. felt like a home. you wondered to yourself what that might mean.
sana greeted you happily when you returned much later than you normally did. she told you to go ahead to the guild and come back, filing away your reports and retrieving your rewards. you dropped off your things in your rented room, quickly, practically galloping back down the steps towards the entrance of the city to continue your conversation with the adventurer guilds' mighty receptionist without your sword weighing you down. you crossed your arms on the counter, comfortably lounging as you chatted with her, having always enjoyed her conversations more than most. like rubin, she was a reason mondstadt always felt comfortable.
"fancy meeting you here," an all too familiar voice said, and you pulled your eyes from sana to find jeonghan leaning his side against the counter next to you.
"good evening, cavalry captain!" sana chirped, placing your reward - your room free already removed - on the counter and bowing politely. "can i help you with anything today?"
his icy gaze flickered from your lightly curved lips towards sana. "oh, no, my dear. i'm just coming back from an investigation near springvale"
"interesting," you said, eyeing him. "i was just there and didn't see you."
"i wouldn't be very good at my job if you did, wanderer," he grinned. "knight business, you wouldn't understand. got the assignment yesterday."
"ah," you shifted to your side to face him, making him eye the vision on your thigh. "is that why you never showed? rubin was worried."
he looked you up and down. "rubin was, huh?"
you rolled your eyes and adjusted your posture to face away from his smirk. sana looked between the two of you twice before clearing her throat as quietly as possible, making jeonghan let out a chuckle before he directed his attention to the guild's receptionist.
"how goes holding the post, sana?"
she looked almost frightened when the attention was directed back to her. "good, captain! in fact, one of our most capable adventurers-" she gestured to you, "-just returned from taking care of some of our more difficult commissions - no one else would take them."
jeonghan looked at you. "why did sana have to tell your secret?"
your eyebrows quirked upwards. "what secret?"
"that you're good at this. shouldn't you be bragging?"
a chuckle spilled from your lips, and jeonghan watched you as you looked away. "i'm not the bragging type."
he studied you a moment. "what type are you, then?"
you considered the question, wondering exactly how to answer. what type were you? if not a teller, than surely you must be a shower, but that didn't seem right either. you exhaled. "the quiet type. see you later, sana."
he laughed, pushing off the counter as you tucked your mora into your waist bag, wishing sana a good evening and following you towards the fountain. "you sure talk a lot for being the quiet type."
a smirk landed itself on your lips as he fell into step beside you. "maybe private is a better description."
"that one i can see," jeonghan said, looking over to you. he thought of how you had spent nearly an hour telling him about the best views in teyvat, yet he still didn't know the most basic information about you. "do you share your name with anyone?"
you thought. "my mother."
he scoffed. "anyone else?"
you looked to the sky. "rubin."
"wrong," he retorted. "he doesn't know your name, either."
you laughed, looking over to him as you came up to the fountain, spinning and sitting back on the ledge. "you asked?"
"of course i asked," he said, planting one foot on the ledge beside you and placing his arms on his knee. "i asked other people, too. almost everyone knows you, but they don't know anything about you. bits and pieces, but never the full picture."
you just smiled up at him from your relaxed posture on the concrete. "what's wrong with a little intrigue?"
he just smiled back at you. "nothing. i tend to keep a bit myself. did you know there's a large number of people in this city that were shocked when i said you wield a claymore?"
you hummed, dipping the tips of your fingers into the fountain. "did you know there's a large number of people in this city that consider you the most eligible bachelor in not only mondstadt, but in all of teyvat?"
his lips parted slightly as you spoke. "so you snooped, too."
"i was bored yesterday. it wasn't hard," you exhaled. you flicked a drop of water towards his foot. "jeonghan yoon, the cavalry captain of the knights of favonius since he was only nineteen. who loves wine and whose adopted brother runs the biggest winery in teyvat, yet they're hardly ever seen speaking. who comes from a far off land on a different continent, but has come to love mondstadt like it was his home. who wears an eyepatch but has never told anyone why."
he chuckled at the assessment and pulled his foot off the ledge to sit beside you. "so when do i get to learn about you?"
"i told you about me yesterday," you said.
"you told me about teyvat," he corrected. "and while i was able to infer some things about your character, i still know close to nothing about you."
you thought for a moment, realizing no one had ever noticed how little you truly shared despite always being willing to tell stories. "sometimes it feels like i am teyvat. it's hard to think of things that are just about me."
"you could start with that vision," he said, nodding at the strap across your thigh. you looked down at it, exhaling.
"what's there to tell? you know what it means, and that's more teyvat than me, too."
he leaned back on a hand, looking you up and down in curiosity. "how old were you."
you chewed your cheek. "fourteen. you?"
his lip quirked upwards. "sixteen."
you bumped his shoulder with yours playfully. "beat you."
he laughed. "how'd it happen?"
you paused. "you go first."
he just chuckled and looked away, watching a dog wander past the general store. "another day, then."
"no fun," you sighed, brushing your hands together as you leaned forward. "what about the eyepatch?"
he met your eyes, mouth slanted in a smirk. "another day."
you clicked your tongue. "if you wanna learn about me, you have to be willing to give up some details, too. i value a fair trade."
"then stop asking questions that you know i won't share the answer to." jeonghan noticed the color of the sky, then suddenly pulled a pocket watch out, checking it quickly to confirm that there was enough time and stood. "come with me?"
you stared up at him. "where?"
he grinned, extending a hand to help you to your feet. "you said mondstadt's sunsets were your favorite, correct?"
you generally weren't prone to following mysterious men into back corridors, but jeonghan easily convinced you with no words at all that sneaking around the sight line of the acting grand master was completely normal behavior, sushing you with a grin as you giggled, taking refuge around a corner after the two of you made it up to the second floor of the favonius headquarters. he tugged your hand with his, pulling you into a steep maintenance staircase behind a door.
"this feels like it's against some rules," you said, climbing the stairs behind him.
"nonsense," he said, looking back at you and grinning. "are you suggesting that a knight of favonius would break rules just to impress a mysterious traveler?"
you laughed quietly, wondering if he really meant that he wanted to impress you. "not most, but maybe this one."
he only thought for a split second. "if anyone asks, we're on official knight business."
he opened the door and you found the sky again, beginning to glow orange as the edge of the sun began to hide behind the cliffs. you stared in awe at the way the few fluffy clouds reflected pink and gold, then readjusted your focus when jeonghan spoke again.
"i hope you aren't afraid of heights," he said, walking over to the parapets that surrounded you. "the best view requires a bit of a climb."
you looked up at the tower, and while it wasn't much higher than where you stood, you also recognized that you were well above most of mondstadt already. "you climb up there?"
he paused, studying you. "we don't have to, we can just sit on a merlon-"
"no, we can climb," you said, walking over to where he was and eyeing the small gap between the parapet and the adjacent roof. "hop over?"
he laughed, stepping over the gap and holding a hand out for you. "watch your step."
and though you didn't need it, you accepted the hand anyways, and it stayed on yours as you walked over the roof to the tower, as if making sure you didn't misstep several stories in the air.
"would you like to go first?" he asked. "i'll catch you if you fall."
you rolled your eyes at him, dropping your hand from his grip. "you go first. i want to see where the handholds are."
he just grinned at you. "very well," he said, tugging on the wrists of his fingerless gloves to make sure they were taught against his skin before taking hold of a brick. you watched him as he took foothold after foothold, and he resisted the urge to show off by speedily scaling the wall in favor of making sure you had the chance to see where he gripped. when he reached the opening in the tower, he pulled himself up and spun around, exhaling with a grin as he seated himself at the ledge with his legs dangling above you.
"your turn."
you adjusted your waist bag as you sighed in amused annoyance, spinning it to be behind you and out of your hips' way to climb the wall. it wasn't much - a couple meters, maybe - and you had definitely climbed further, but jeonghan's presence made you slightly nervous. that nervousness, however, just fueled you to prove yourself.
you scaled the wall easily, making jeonghan whistle and jokingly call you some kind of adventurer, and your only hesitation came when his hand was in your face. despite your initial inclination to ignore it, you put your left hand in his, allowing him to help you pull yourself up on the ledge and sit beside him.
"impressive," he commented.
you laughed, brushing off your hands. "you, too."
"c'mon," he said, gesturing his head over his shoulder before making moves to stand. "the view's on the other side."
you sighed, looking over the view of mondstadt shrouded in golden light as he stood and walked to the other ledge. "never a moment of rest with you."
"if you want to miss the sunset, be my guest."
you leaned back on your hands and laughed, pulling your gaze away from the city to look at where jeonghan had seated himself on the other end of the tower, and subsequently the view of the rolling hills beyond him that were glowing golden in the evening sun. you blinked for a second, realizing you hadn't seen the sunset the night before, and quickly got to your feet to join him before you missed this one, too.
he gave you a soft smile when you sat beside him, and you briefly wondered how many he had in his repertoire. the wind was stronger higher, whipping gently through his hair and alleviating any uncomfortable warmth you may have had from exerting yourself on the way up. you watched the dregs of sunlight skip across the grassy hills and the sky turn deep orange and bright pink, feet swinging lightly over the edge of the tower.
"i was fighting with my brother," he said suddenly, causing you to look at him with a start before you realized he was telling you about his vision. there was a slight smile on his face as he looked out on the fields. "hyungwon. it was bad. he already had his - he's a pyro, like you - and we were both young and stupid and just lost our dad. we were sword fighting and it came to me when i needed it. it probably saved my life, honestly."
you blinked at him. "you think he would have killed you?'
he exhaled, leaning back on his hands. "i think if the roles had been reversed, i would have tried to kill him, too. i'm grateful it didn't go that way, though." he coughed abruptly, clearing his throat. "we're on speaking terms, and i do love him as a brother, but i generally avoid him."
you let that thought ruminate as you watched the sun sink, halfway beyond the horizon. "my father was in a gang in inazuma, but my mom ran away when she found out she was pregnant. didn't want to raise a kid in that world, i guess? we ran into him when i got older and he wasn't very understanding." you paused, remembering the detail too well. "they were going to take her vision. that's what they did to traitors. probably take me, too. they weren't expecting me to start setting fires."
jeonghan's gaze was on you as yours was on the horizon. "just a couple of survivors."
you looked over at him, a smirk on your lips. "a couple?"
he laughed waving at your implication, thinking he would have said the same thing in an attempt to fluster you just as you were to him. "like, more than one and less than four."
you only laughed back. "fortune favors the weak, i suppose. the archons saw we needed help and extended a fig branch."
"is that what it was?" he asked, a laugh on his lips. "we were both fighting people. that's hardly an offer of peace."
"look for the deeper meaning, jeonghan. we were fighting for our lives," you pointed out, and he realized it was the first time you had addressed him by his name rather than his title. "i was fighting for family. for freedom. is that not the greatest pursuit of peace?"
he watched you as you pulled your knees to your chest, putting your feet on the edge of the stonework surface you sat on. he studied the way the golden rays lit your skin and made your eyes sparkle. "i suppose so."
you paused in that moment for a long while, and jeonghan allowed the comfortable silence as the two of you watched the sun disappear beyond the cliffs of mondstadt. the sky was turning a deep shade of purple when you told him your name, and jeonghan thought that it was quite possibly the best news he had ever received, but he kept that joy to himself as he confirmed your name, and you rolled your eyes.
"are you gonna answer my other question now?"
he scoffed. "about the eyepatch? is it really that interesting?"
"not any more interesting than my name," you retorted.
"completely untrue," jeonghan insisted. "i've never been so excited to be told a secret, and i get told a lot of secrets."
you eyed his smile warily. "my name may be unknown, but it's no secret."
he sighed and shook his head lightly. "you really wanna know the reason i wear it? it's probably not as dramatic as you're hoping."
"yet you hide it?"
he laughed. "what's wrong with a little intrigue?"
you looked away, recognizing the parrot of your own words. "whatever you say, captain."
"no!" he whined and grabbed your arm, making you start and look at him with big eyes. "you just started calling me jeonghan, don't go back to captain."
you stared at him, only breaking to laugh, dropping your legs over the edge again. "you won't show me what's under the eyepatch, so i thought we weren't on first name basis."
his hand on your bicep was warm and gentle, but his gaze was piercing as he thought it over for a bit longer. you did your best to hold it, but you felt yourself shrinking when he quietly muttered, "go on, then."
it took you a second to register what he meant, and you reached out slowly, fingers hesitating before they brushed upon his cheekbone. jeonghan closed his eyes, resigning to your touch as you gently lifted the eyepatch. his eyes opened again, slowly, and you thought your heart might have skipped a beat.
"like chocolate," you commented, and a smile spread across his lips.
"that's the kindest reaction i've gotten."
your fingers fell upon his temple, brushing down gently as you inspected his singular brown eye. "since birth?"
he nodded, his eyes flicking down to your lips briefly before he spoke. "heterochromia. it's a characteristic of my family."
you studied his face. "not the one here?"
he sighed. "not the one here."
the icy blue of jeonghan's eye had always struck something in you. it made him mysterious. commanding. it felt like he saw more than you despite having one eye covered. but now, you felt warm. you felt his gentleness. there was comfort hidden away behind that black patch, and you told him that you understood why the cavalry captain had chosen to hide the eye he did.
but to you, he was willing to show anything that would keep you around longer, he said.
"why me?" you asked, studying his expression when he looked away. the sun had retreated behind the hills, leaving the sky a deep blue.
jeonghan didn't respond right away, and you wondered if he himself even knew the answer. "we're birds of a feather, you and i."
you looked out to the view again, watching the subtle movements of the wild hills. "did you travel much before you came here?"
"it was all i knew," he told you. "i was thirteen when my father left me here."
your neck snapped, your eyes on his profile when he leaned back on his hands. "left you?"
he almost laughed, a smile on his lips when his eyes met yours. "i was slowing him down, i suppose. hyungwon's father found me and took me in."
"so you stayed?"
"i didn't always want to," he assured you. "i had the itch to leave for years. as soon as i was able, i always told myself." he paused, eyes dropping. "then father died. then hyungwon turned down his position with the knights. and i was their second choice."
you pursed your lips. "you stayed for a job."
he laughed. "it's not that simple."
you smiled at him, enjoying the warmth of his eyes on yours as the sky cooled. "are you sure we're birds of a feather?"
"listen," he said, getting off his hands and brushing them off on his thighs. "i accepted the job so that i could set the story straight. i didn't want to run from the people that believed that hyungwon tried to kill me to avenge our father."
you studied him. "i'm sorry."
"don't be," he said, nudging your shoulder. "i was still planning on leaving, but then i fell in love."
you looked away, trying to sort out the way your stomach flipped. "are they still around?"
"not with a person," he laughed, then nodded towards the now dark hills. "with the views. besides, i get free reign whenever i leave for missions. i have fun adventuring, and come home to the best sunsets in teyvat. there are worse places to call home."
your eyes scanned the horizon, remembering the brilliant rays of sun you had just seen skip across it. "that is tempting."
"how tempting?" he asked.
you thought on that for a moment. "almost as much as a death after noon right now."
jeonghan laughed, slightly proud that he had hooked you on his favorite drink. "shall we go see rubin, then?"
you hummed, smiling at the captain. "as long as i don't have to sit alone again."
"that's a promise," he told you as he stood, holding out a hand that you took without hesitation, though he withheld his intention to make sure you were never alone again.

INCOMING VAMPIRE AU THOUGHTS
Don't mind me I'm finally getting the ideas I had on this shit out so I can actually go forward with developing it as an AU. It's my usual mixup of fps protags, Gordon Guy and John, but I'm starting with Gordon as the Vampire and Guy as the Vampire Hunter.
Tumblr media
absolute beast of a wall of text under the cut
What If Being A Vampire Literally Sucks All The Time Forever like chronic pain sucks. like THAT level of sucks. Like Here's what I was thinking of. Being a vampire isn't just "being alive forever but you need to drink human blood" It's like Oh man I have some lore you look at vampires and their main thing is that they're blood suckers right so lets start with a corpse dead body. cadaver. no longer with us. just some rotting meat. The brain needs oxygen as fuel. The blood supplies the oxygen through blood. The blood is pumped through the heart. The blood is made by your bone marrow. You die. Your heart stops beating Blood stops pumping Brain no longer has oxygen to think marrow stops making blood thats standard! Now, becoming undead, as a vampire, is a little more complicated. The long and short of it is: your body is FIGHTING ACTIVELY to be alive against all odds and wins every time (immortality), but it hurts the whole way
I have the gist of it. It's like. Your heart stops. By all means, you should be dead. but the magic kicks in, and you're still thinking. Your brain is still sending signals to your muscles to move. But using what oxygen to move? whats burning in you? You don't know but you know it's just enough to get to your next meal. So you ferociously eat something, and then find you can't swallow. You can't make saliva. You barely have the energy to chew, and once you DO get something in your stomach, it immediately comes back up. Why can't you feel your pulse? What's going on? You're out of options so you figure you might as well just lie down and die. You're too tired to keep going anyway. So you do, you lie down, and you close your eyes, and you quietly hope that death is as peaceful as sleep. You realize you've actually been moving around without breathing, which makes sense because you can barely flex your diaphragm for more than a shaky wheeze. How are you thinking with such little oxygen? But as you fade from consciousness, you can feel something in you, and it's so upset, it's crying, it's filled with grief, and you instantly can tell it's your skeleton. It's your bones. You're distraught down to your marrow. You're dying. You're dying! Your heart stopped and you have no more blood! You need blood! You need blood to move! To breathe! To think! You try to breath deep again for the voices in your bones, trying to comfort them, to sooth them with the repetitive motion in your lungs, trying to fill yourself with anything but grief, but they keep wailing. We make the blood, our creation, our child, what we put all of our work into is gone! gone! gone! We need it back! Anything! All of it! Find it! Bring it back to us! We're hungry! WE'RE HUNGRY!
and once you find yourself too exhausted to listen, to think, how badly you wish just to die already to cease hearing this wailing, you find your body moving without you. And it's hungry and it's searching and it's crawling on all fours and it misses its beautiful red life that made it feel so full before and it needs it back, and the next thing you know you're desperately grabbing anything with blood in it and shoving it in your mouth in a desperate attempt to sooth this cry for life, you don't want to die, you don't want to die, you worked so hard to keep up this body and craft it and LIVE with it and you're not going to go, and even when you try, even when you try to lay down and die, your body refuses, it takes the reigns, and it keeps up the work itself with or without your help. And it's not until your stomach is full and your teeth are stained and you feel a pulsating burning in your bones that you snap back awake, completely conscious, just fine. You're lucid, you don't feel any more pain. Everything around you is dead and drained and messy and your heart still isn't beating. but you can breathe now and holy shit you guess you literally need to kill to survive and the less you eat and the more you starve yourself the worse it gets when your body finally decides to take recourse.
my idea was like. "the vampires curse is actually stored in the bones, thats why the teeth get so sharp and also theres a connection between blood and bones with the creation via bone marrow" its literally like i was sitting there thinking "no no no, whats it like to be a vampire. what neurosis would you develop. How would you panic? What are common mistakes beginner vampires make" which, by the way, gordon is a beginner vampire
so now you gotta factor, what blood lasts for how long? how long can you go between meals? not only that, but what creatures satisfy the urge? How long can you go avoiding human blood? Does it work like drugs where you develop a resistance to the high, or is it like food where it will keep you moving until you eat again? How the fuck are you gonna get your hands on blood? Can you just eat raw meat? Does that count? and thats where im at lol
OKAY now. now thoughts on beginning scenes of vampire au
So my idea was this Doomguy is a vampire hunter independent and one of his buds says that some freak scared and almost attacked his daughter when she got too close to his old abandoned laboratory up the hill and hes like “he might be… you know… a problem. if you needed a lead” and guys like yeah i fuckin hate the undead ill kill this dude so he busts into old lab space and sees so many dead animals its actually mostly Bones and pelt that hes seeing piles of feathers etc so hes like yeah this is all telltale signs of vampire uhhh hes introduced to gordon SOMEHOW im not totally sure of the details but the working idea i have is guy falls into a trap gordon devised that restrains him suspended in wire or something and gordon like. limps/stumbles into the room and this dude looks haggard he’s breathing heavy, his cheeks are hollow, he’s bug-eyed and shaking while looking at this massive wall of meat in his trap and he bares a bunch of hideous teeth and grits them and looks like hes really struggling with somethin... Like if these dudes don't know each other then Gordon might give in and try to drain Guy, and Guy would absolutely do anything in his power to turn this new vampire into ash, im thinking the inclusion if g-man as a coven leader can fix both issues.
i like the idea of guy falling into gordons trap and gordon thinking about what to do with him before gman shows up and whisks gordon away for a “meeting” while complimenting him on his good work catching the most feared vampire hunter in the country and gman just leaving guy suspended in wires that he has to fight his way out of. Instant situation defuser.
Guy ends up needing to take care of other monsters before going back to Gordon, and he DOES plan to go back to gordon, because no vampire is a good one, especially not one associated with the fucking head of a coven, but next time he sees Gordon, Gordon helps him out of a scrape by attacking and draining a combine who was going to take Guy out or something and escaping before Guy can catch him, or otherwise seeing Gordon do something good with his insane undead powers and like, the third time he meets up with him is when they can actually talk, and Gordons fuckin SO haggard, he’s not even fighting back and he’s even going as far as to say “just make sure theres nothing of me left when you’re done, I don’t want anyone else getting hurt”
Side Note: Guy has a bunch of scarring on his body from dealing with vampires, cops, ghosts, werewolves, anything violent that kills people. I'm playing with the inkling of an idea that he has Divine Blood in him, so that any time something undead bites him or tries to drink his blood, it burns. We'll see.
Side Note 2: now i really like the idea of the combine actually being an organized faction of vampire hunters that are WICKED crooked and exploit people for all their worth in exchange for their “safety” when they kill a vampire They’re essentially loansharks and Guy fucking hates them and hates the name theyve given to vampire hunting
Side Note 3: You've probably noticed that I haven't said anything about John yet! He's in this too. His species is a surprise but I need to get to him later I have an idea for where he came from (Cortana too)
I still need a good reason for Guy to not instantly kill this vampire, if not it's just gonna be "Gordon Freeman escapes the countrys best vampire hunter like a seventh time" every time they meet and they end up being rivals. And it gives Guy enough time to look past the whole "undead monster" thing and start looking at the "Oh this dude figured out how to fight his ridiculous craving for blood in a way more humane than most and is actually staying out of peoples way and keeping to himself. Guess he's not that big of a threat but I still need to keep an eye on him in case he loses it. Turns out he's got a family (Probably Alyx, Eli, Issac and Barney) who's been lookin for him and cares about him as well, don't wanna hurt them". I like the idea of them ending up needing to team up to take out undead together.
And that's what I got so far!!!

Maul and Savage analysis
This is gonna be kind of a 2 part analysis. I want to touch on their actual relationship and what it means to them (Mostly Maul, because we know Maul for longer) and the fight scene where Savage meets his end to Sidious. Also want to note this analysis is how I think these boys were thinking. This DOES NOT MEAN that they ACTUALLY thought this way. This is only made for fun and I’m posting it for others to enjoy. This is an OPINION. Also it is very long I apologize but I hope you enjoy :)
Maul and Savages relationship is honestly pretty straight forward for the most part. Of course there is a brotherly love there. They only just met, but through blood they grow a close relationship really quickly. This is similar to the clones, with shinies for example, Rex and Cody just treat them like younger brothers even though they’ve never met previously.
What makes this relationship so much different though is Maul’s perspective of this relationship. Maul’s life has been nothing but pain and betrayal. Everyone who has ever seemed to care about him has either turned their backs on them or never cared to begin with. Mother Talzin stole Maul’s childhood. Stole him as an infant and turned him to the dark side the same way she did with Savage. Then, she immediately handed him over to Sidious, who treated him like a dog and didn’t care at all about his life or his existence. Casting him aside when his purpose was fulfilled.
But Savage, Savage cares deeply about his brother. Savage is kind at heart, but even in his dying moments when the dark side magic shit left his body, he only cared about Maul. This was the one person in his life that cared about him. Treated him like a person, not an object. Maul and Savage trust each other, something Maul has never been able to experience before. When they are first saved by the Death Watch, Savage wakes up and he immediately freaks out, panics. But the moment Maul walks in the room, he calms down. Maul puts his hand on Savage’s and he instantly relaxes. This is THE ONLY person in shows and movies that Maul is trusted by someone else (I am only speaking of canon lore not legends, and I haven't read every comic that may have Savage in it so...), and it is clear through the next scene I’m about to talk about is that Maul has that same trust for him.
Not to mention they work so well together. Maul and Savage in their short time together can predict each others movements or imply what the other wants based on their behavior. Take the scene in the Lawless arc (NOT the episode I don’t think, I think it was the episode right before again i think I'm too lazy to go back and find the ep title) when they are “negotiating” with the Black Sun. Maul doesn’t need to tell Savage that when he ducts to throw his lightsaber, Savage just does it. (This is the scene I mentioned above, showing Maul’s trust in his brother). ALSO the scene with the Hutts!! This is the BIGGEST ONE!!! One of the bounty hunters throws a knife at Maul's face, and he doesn't even flinch because he KNOWS his brother is there to save him! Which Savage is!! He stops the blade with the force right before it strikes. Like the look on Maul's face when he realizes his brother is actually there for him is adorable.
They care so much about each other, especially Maul since this is the only person in his life that genuinely cares about him and trusts him. Maul wouldn’t ever think to betray his brother mainly because Savage has no intentions of hurting him.
This leads to the fight between Maul and Savage and Lord Sidious. There’s so much to break down in this fight.
Just to note before I go into the fight, I AM NOT A FIGHTING EXPERT!! I know the basics and I know what each form is and how it’s used in this world. This is just what I’ve noticed and how I believe each character was thinking during the fight (again mainly Maul and Sidious because we didn’t get to see much of Savage).
When Sidious is first sensed by Maul we see him immediately spring from being this confident Sith Lord to a desperate and scared apprentice. Sidious TERRIFIES Maul, like he should. Maul doesn’t even hesitate to bow before him when Sidious does enter, and tell him that everything he has done was to go back to him. We all know this is a lie, but he’s so afraid of his master that that’s all he can do.
Another thing to note is that when Sidious notices Savage, he immediately points out Maul is trying to deceive him. In this scene Maul looks scared and answers with a “Master?” I can’t really tell if he was actually planning to return to his side OR if he was shocked that Sidious saw through him so quickly. Also another thing to note is that it’s obvious Maul did not tell Savage anything about Sidious, as he did not bow, he actually stood ready to fight instead. Just another thing to note not really that important.
Then the fight actually begins. When Maul and Savage are thrown into the wall they realize that “oh shit we actually have to fight.”
This is where things get REALLY interesting. Savage takes his normal stance, but it’s important to note that at this point, Savage has gotten like, a month or two or three of training. Maul, Sidious, even Ahsoka has had much more training than poor poor Savage. And having Maul as a teacher honestly doesn’t do him many favors, at least in this fight.
Darth Sidious uses Form 7 (The same Maul and Mace Windu use, though Windu uses a light sided version, very controversial) which is very aggressive. The reason Maul uses a saber staff is because Form 7 is based on overwhelming your opponent, a completely offensive strategy. THIS is the form Savage also uses, mainly because that is Maul’s primary way of fighting.
Usually this ability to overwhelm an opponent works in his favor, same with Maul. He did very well against Jedi that weren’t Kenobi (Kenobi is the MASTER of Form 3, the ultimate defensive player, Savage can’t beat that). But in this fight however, it was actually his downfall, and I think Maul knew that.
Sidious uses the same form as Maul, but better. Sidious is the strongest Sith the galaxy has ever seen. This is why Maul actually takes Kenobi’s defensive stance. He HAS to play defense because his power is not enough to overwhelm Sidious, not by a long shot. So he has to play defensively. Poor Savage can’t do that, however, because he doesn’t know how. His only card is playing offensively, which is why he ends up dying.
Maul plays Defensively, so Sidious plays offensive to counter, but in doing so, Maul saves his strength since playing defense takes way less physical energy and more mental energy. Sidious plays a mix of both offensive and defensive with Savage, only because playing defensively will tire Savage out (and with Savage’s body type no wonder he gets worn out so quickly). That’s when Sidious switches to playing a more offensive route and takes the final blow.
I LOVE this section of Lawless BECAUSE OF MAUL’S REACTION. Let me explain.
Maul immediately stops fighting to hep his brother. THIS IS WHY I SAY MAUL LOVES HIS BROTHER.
MAUL TURNED HIS BACK TO SIDIOUS.
At any moment Sidious could have killed him alongside his brother, but he didn’t. What reason? I don’t know. Did e want to see his former apprentice suffer? Was he keeping him alive for his own personal gain? Was it both?? I’m not sure. Sidious is not the point anyway.
But again, Maul chooses to turn his back on the one thing that he KNOWS could kill him, the one thing that scares him more than anything else, just to be by his brothers side. The look on Maul’s face as his brother dies is probably the most gut-wrenching scene Maul is in, mainly because of what he must have been feeling.
Sidious had taken everything from him. His home, his childhood, his entire life. And when Sidious was done using him like a dirty towel he just, threw him away. Didn’t even bother looking for him, searching for him. Maul probably called out when he was stuck on that planet, hoping that his master would help him getting nothing in response. Or maybe he did, and Sidious just told him he wasn’t needed anymore.
Sidious had taken EVERYTHING from him, and now, he’s done it again. Taking away the only person in this universe that actually gave a shit about his existence. And Maul gets PISSED, trembling with anger. Rightfully so!
This is when Maul takes out the dark saber and switches to mainly being offensive. He actually kinda just starts, smashing at Sidious. All of the rage and anger he has towards his master comes out for a few seconds, to the point where Sidious himself has to take steps back. At one point he even gets Sidious on his knees.
Right here is where we see the difference in power between Maul and Sidious. Sidious quickly and easily overpowers this VERY submissive pose. He easily out pushes Maul, which Im assuming Maul was using the force to force his sabers down on Sidious.
The end of the fight is nothing special relating to Maul and Savages relationship. The fight ends with Maul begging for mercy, only because the rage has fallen away and the fear of his master has returned. His confidence that was driven by anger was stripped the minutes Sidious used the force to throw him around like a ragdoll.
It’s kind of like he just blacked out due to the anger and woke up when he was slapped to the ground, realizing once again that he can’t win on his own. He was blinded by his rage and when that rage turned to fear again he realized what was happening.
He goes back to the state of mind he was in close to the beginning of the fight, fight or flight kicking in once again basically.
There’s SO MUCH to Maul I can analyze, which is why he’s one of my favorite characters. There’s so much more I can say about JUST him but then this would be more of an essay than it already is lol.

Unus Annus
So... today's the day huh. A whole year went by already. New memories, new experiences, new adventures. Yet we all come back to the same thing, the same channel that isn't anymore. The same dumb little channel that impacted us like nothing had before. Impacted me.
Honestly, I don't think I could put into a single letter, a single post just how much Unus Annus meant and will always mean to me. Maybe because there isn't a right way to express it, maybe because after all this time I still haven't found the correct words to do so. But I'll try my best, so I'm sorry if this is a bit messy.
Unus Annus. One year. Two people. Who would think a channel made by a couple of big idiots (affectionate) would have such an impact on the internet, on everyone who was lucky enough to be there for the ride. Even if you joined on day one or three days before it got deleted, it didn't matter. You were part of it.
I still remember seeing the notification on Mark's channel, and me panicking because I thought he was gonna delete his own. But no, turns out it was my invitation to something huge. At the begging I watched the introduction video and the *ahem* peculiar first official video. Didn't think much of it other than it was a cool project, so I stopped following it until day 10, where for some reason my brain decided "oh, shoot, I need to catch up". And ever since then I've been locked in, watching it from start to finish, never missing a single video. Yeah, even the deleted ones during Unus Annus, I was there for those (RIP Omegle video).
So, when it finally came the day, when it was finally November 14th, I... I was devastated. I had been there since the begging. I saw it grow, I saw the fandom become bigger and bigger, I saw the fanart, the theories, the fanfics, hell- even the Matpat video, everything. I remember me fighting with my mom because I wanted to stay up late to watch the stream, and even though I missed an hour, I woke up just in time for the last ten minutes. And just how I was there in day one to welcome it, I was there on it's last minute to say goodbye.
And let me tell you, I felt like shit. When it comes to death and loss I'm not the type to cry, or even let a sob out. But with this goddamn channel... To say I bawled is an overstatement. No, I mourned. For the first time in my life I experienced mourning. And I have lost close people to me before, grandparents, friends, but even there it wasn't as bad -or as good- as with Unus Annus.
So, here's my first thanks: thank you for teaching me how to grieve.
As my second thanks: ... Thank you for giving me a reason to keep going. I don't think I would be here today if it weren't for Unus Annus. I remember it clearly: I was still living at my abuser's house, I had gotten off a... bad fight, all my school projects were over due, I had no one to ask for help, nowhere to run, I felt alone. I felt like giving up. And the only reason, the only thing that kept me from doing something stupid was the thought "24 more days, just 24 more days". I couldn't just go without seeing the end. That's the only thing that saved my life. So thank you, thank you for being there when I most needed it.
As my third thanks: thank you for allowing me to meet some of my best friends. @heller-castiel @doodling-dog @emmahasnoideawhatshesdoing, I don't know where I would be without you guys. Yes, we haven't been talking that much lately, but do not think I've forgotten about y'all. And even though we never finished that fanfiction, it will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the few specks of light in a dark time for me. Let's reunite Tooth Knife Gang one day, alright?
And as my fourth and final thanks:
. . .
Thank you for everything. Thank you for the memories, for the laughs, for the cries, for the exasperated sighs trying to solve the lore, for the community you created, for being there when nothing else was, thank you for Unus Annus. It was truly an unique experience I will never be able to live again, and I'm okay with that. I'm okay with losing the channel. Because fuck if I didn't enjoy every second of it, fuck if I didn't make the most of what I could with those videos. You were there to see me grow, to leave toxic relationships, to become a bit stronger, and for that I couldn't be more grateful.
You taught me that death, though inevitable, doesn't have to be the end. You taught me to value each minute, each moment, because one day it will all be gone. You taught me to appreciate the little things. You taught me that life doesn't have to be all bad, that there is always something worth fighting for out there. You taught me to thank death, because without it life wouldn't have meaning.
So thank you. Thank you Mark, Ethan, Amy, Evan, all the wonderful editors and all the amazing guests. And thank you, Unus Annus.
Thank you for the journey of my life.
Thank you, and I'll see you on the other side
Memento mori, Unus Annus.

These Feelings Inside (How Deep Do They Go)
Chapter 5- Within The Waters
Masterlist. Previous. Next.
Read on ao3 here.
Woo! Chapter 5 of my fic for the @kotlc2021collab !
Things are gonna start building up more, with a little more siren lore. SL fans will start noticing more slight differences when it comes to the lore!
Warnings- censored swearing, and that's all, I think
Anyways, enjoy!
•~•~•~•~•~•
"Yesterday you told me that we were going to meet other sirens today," Sophie whispered as her and Keefe sat at the dining room table. While it was just the two of them in the room, she didn't want to risk anyone overhearing. "I thought you told me that sirens are solitary."
"I don't like following the rules," Keefe replied, and well, that made a lot of sense actually. "And I'm not always around them. The two of them are the ones who constantly stick together, I just join them occasionally."
"If it's possible, why don't sirens stay in groups?"
The look on their face was uncharacteristically serious. "I'm not sure if you've noticed, but I haven't made any physical contact with you while we were both sirens."
She thought about that day. They did for the most part keep their distance, and even when they came closer, they didn't make any contact. It didn't seem to matter before, but she did notice that they were physically affectionate. Brushing hands with her, or something as simple as leaning an arm on Fitz's shoulder.
It could have been excused as the fact that they'd barely known each other at the time, except that they still barely knew each other, and were even more unfamiliar with Fitz.
"It's impossible for a siren to touch another siren," they continued. "You can try, but seafoam will emerge, stopping you from making contact. Besides, broken hearts are already rare enough, but to find multiple is nearly impossible. In the end, you want to become human, even if it'd mean leaving your "friend" behind. It's easier to stay alone."
"The other two don't care about that, do they?"
"They're both fiercely loyal," Keefe replied, looking fond. "I have a feeling that if one of them became human, they'd find a way to stay with the other."
"If sirens are meant to leave their siren life behind, why are we going to meet them?"
"I like being with them, and since I'm still half-siren, I can still find them again. But also, Linh and ver brother have been sirens longer than Marella and I, they know more. I'm hoping that ve would know something as to why we're half-siren."
Linh, ver brother, and Marella. Wait… "Didn't you say that we were meeting two sirens? You just mentioned three."
The smile on their face fell. "I've never actually met Linh's brother, he… went missing before I met ver."
Sophie may not have been the best at reading a situation, but she was able to tell that they were approaching a topic that was probably off-limits. She tried to think of something else to talk about, but failed to come up with something.
Fortunately, Fitz and Biana entered the room, which ended the conversation.
"Wait, you don't work here," Keefe remarked, gesturing to Biana. "I know you hang around, but do you come here every day ?"
"Do you have a problem with me being here?" she asked. "But if you really wanna know, I'm job searching. I just don't like being by myself."
"Oh, that makes sense. Why don't you just work here?" they asked.
"Unlike the two of them," she gestured to Sophie and Fitz. "Being a florist isn't a job I'm interested in. I'm planning to be a volleyball instructor, to teach kids, and all that."
"That's cool. Good luck with that."
After Sophie and Keefe finished breakfast, the four of them went to the front of the store.
"Oh, Foster, that reminds me," Keefe said. They turned around, then turned back to look at her, a bouquet of yellow carnations in hand. "This is for you."
Sophie blinked, not knowing how to feel about that. She glanced at Fitz, who looked shocked, and maybe a little upset? Keefe must have followed her gaze, because they continued talking.
"Oh, Fitzy, did you want a bouquet too? Sorry, I didn't have enough money."
"Is this why you were so insistent on taking the spare change when we were shopping yesterday?" Biana asked, unimpressed.
Keefe, Sophie and Fitz ignored her. Fitz's gaze was still fixated on the bouquet.
"You know…" he began. "You know what those flowers mean, right?"
Keefe's eyes widened.
Before they could say anything, Sophie spoke. "They probably
didn't realize what it had meant."
"What did they mean?" Keefe asked, their voice a little soft, and there was something about it that Sophie couldn't recognize. "I saw you use carnations yesterday, I thought that-"
"We used pink carnations yesterday," Fitz interrupted. Sophie didn't realize how tense he was until he began to relax. "Colours matter too. Yellow carnations usually mean dislike, rejection or disappointment."
"Wait, seriously? I chose yellow because the colour suits Fos- dislike?" Keefe sputtered. "Why the f*ck are there flowers that mean that? And why are they being sold in a shop?"
Sophie shrugged. "Not everyone cares about flower language."
"Well," Keefe huffed. "Guess I've gotta pay more attention." They turned to Fitz, then grinned. "Guess it's good that I didn't buy any for you, Fitzy."
"I… guess, yeah." Fitz scratched the back of his neck. "At least you know now."
"Oh, Sophie," Biana said. "Wanna have game night today? Keefe can join us if they want."
"Sorry, Keefe and I are going out." She left it with that, not knowing what else to say.
"Alright, that's fine."
They then got to work opening the shop. While Fitz and Keefe dealt with the customers, Sophie waited for the order to come. Instead of sitting down like she normally would, Biana came and stood next to her.
"I wanted to ask you this earlier," Biana whispered. "But everything is going alright with you, right?"
Internally, Sophie laughed. I'm half siren, does that count as being alright? Externally, she just smiled lightly and replied, "Yeah, why?"
Biana turned around and glanced at Keefe, who had just put an arm around Fitz's shoulder. "It's just… I like Keefe, I think they're cool, but your explanation as to how you met them doesn't seem like the truth. I just want to make sure everything is okay with you."
Sophie shrugged, hoping that it seemed casual. "Don't worry, I'm fine. I'll tell you if something's wrong."
She nodded. "As your best friend, you better tell me. Anyways, where are you and Keefe going?"
"Meeting two of Keefe's other friends, their names are Linh and Marella." Knowing the names of their two friends made explaining a lot easier, since once again, it wasn't a lie.
"Oh, that's cool. Have fun with that!"
~•~•~•~•~•
"So, just to confirm," Sophie began. "But unlike pants, shirts don't magically transform under water?"
"Nope. Unfortunately, Foster, you don't get to take your hoodie underwater."
"Well, damn. I'm gonna have to actually search for something to wear."
"Do you not go swimming Foster?" Keefe asked.
"No, not often." She tumbled through her drawers. "I think I might have something Biana bought for me- can you leave so I can change?"
"I'll wait for you downstairs."
After a few minutes, she found what she needed- a red top (that was actually similarly coloured to her tail) designed for swimming- and put it on, underneath her normal clothes. She debated whether she'd need a towel, before deciding to pack two in a small bag.
The two of them walked towards the water, and Sophie absently noted that this was the path that she'd taken in the first place (or well, it seemed vaguely familiar). She entered the water, and despite knowing that she had a tail, she was still thrown off by its existence.
"Swimming is weird with a tail."
"I missed mine, I still think that walking is overrated," Keefe said.
"I keep feeling like I'm about to fall over," Sophie grumbled, swimming in circles. After a bit, she managed to get herself to move properly in the water again. "Alright, lead the way."
"Oh, Foster, try not to make your heart glow, okay? I don't want to attract any unwanted attention."
She looked at them blankly. "How about you tell me how to do that? Or tell me more about this whole glowing hearts thing."
They shrugged. "I don't even know why your heart glows in the first place. But when you aren't feeling a particular emotion, your heart doesn't really glow, it's a very faint grey."
"Is this something you instinctively knew after becoming a siren? Or did you have to learn everything?"
Keefe hummed. "I can't really remember exactly, but I just knew ."
"Huh, weird."
"I guess it is. Oh, we're here!"
Sophie looked around, examining her surroundings. It was mostly empty (though, she wasn't exactly sure what she was expecting in the water, in the middle of nowhere). There were some coral and other plants, and she reached out to touch it.
"Ooh, that's satisfying."
"That gets old after a while," Keefe said.
"How… how long have you been a siren?"
"I don't know, it's kinda hard to keep track of time. At least a year." Despite the words, their tone was light.
Sophie blinked. They'd been a siren for a year? They had to live without their memories, live all alone, deep within these waters, for at least a year? All this, because they were caught in a vulnerable state, and happened to be within the range of a siren? What about other sirens? How long would they have been cursed to live like this?
"Woah Foster, it's not that serious, your heart's really blue right now."
Maybe it wasn't serious to them, but shouldn't this be a bigger deal? How many sirens were out there, in this situation? She'd almost ended up in that situation, lucky that the curse messed up, leaving her with her memories.
"Is that a broken heart? All the way out here?" A soft voice asked.
"It's the wrong blue, too bright to be broken. This person's just sad," a second voice replied, slightly higher in pitch.
"You should start singing then," the first voice said.
"Don't tell me what to- that's not a human. "
"Oh, hey, you're here!" Keefe called out. "And nope, that's not a human, that's Foster!"
Sophie frowned at the mention of her not being human.
"Why is Foster's heart glowing?" The one with a higher pitched voice asked, and now Sophie could see how they looked. This siren had blond hair and blue eyes- similar to Keefe- but instead of a blue tail, their tail was coloured like a fire.
"I brought her here to see if any of you could figure it out."
"Uh, hi, I'm Sophie Foster," Sophie greeted with a wave, then winced at how lame she sounded.
"Wait, you have a last name?" The blond one asked.
"If you don't mind answering, how long have you been a siren, Sophie?" The other one- a siren with a silvery-blue tail asked.
"Uh, this is day two? I, uh, have all my memories. I also turn human out of the water, and so does Keefe."
The blue-tailed siren tilted their head. "Oh, that's strange. I'm Linh, by the way. And she's Marella."
"Not Mare. Not Ella. No nicknames," Marella said.
Keefe grinned. "I've heard Linh call you fi-"
Marella flicked a hand towards them, and they were launched backwards by the water. "Shut up."
"Ow!" Keefe whined.
Sophie ignored the two of them, and moved closer towards Linh. "Keefe told me that you know a lot about sirens."
"I wouldn't say a lot, because I'm not sure as to how much of it is true. I'm a fan of stories, and my brother was good at finding information. Is there something specific you need to know?"
"Do you have any idea as to why the curse would mess up? Keefe was the one who was supposed to turn me, but when we woke up, we were both humans. When we went in the water afterwards, we both transformed into sirens."
"Are there any other things that are odd?"
"Well, there's the fact that my heart apparently glows. I can't see the hearts, but Keefe can."
Ve hummed, before going to Keefe. "Keefe, did you notice anything odd when you kissed her?"
"My memory's kinda fuzzy, so I'm not really sure."
Ve frowned. "I don't really have that much to work with, but it does seem like Keefe's more siren-like than you are. How often are your withdrawals?"
"Mine come quicker than Foster's," Keefe replied. "Are you saying that it's not broken, but more like… the curse got stuck midway through?"
"It's probably better that way. At least Sophie here gets to keep her memories," Marella said.
"Maybe," Linh said, ver voice quiet. One of ver hands rubbed against ver wrist. Sophie realized that ve'd been holding ver wrist the entire time.
The world went quiet after that, and Sophie couldn't stand the silence. "What exactly are sirens? I mean, I know they're beings who travel in search of broken hearts so they can become human again, but, like…" she tried to think of how to phrase what she wanted to say.
"You mean the origin?" Linh asked. Sophie nodded. "One of the theories is that sirens have just existed like any other animal would. Other sirens believe that a human, at their lowest point, was given a second chance at life by a higher being. Though, I don't really believe in a higher being. My personal favourite is that a long time ago, a human broke the heart of someone else, and they were cursed for it."
"Oh, that's interesting." It didn't provide much information that would help her, especially since the origin of sirens wasn't actually known . But it was better to have a vague idea than to have no idea.
"Marella and I can go look for other sirens to see if we can find out any more information," Linh said.
"Yeah, we can do that," Marella agreed. "You two better not slack off and make us do all the work though."
"It was nice meeting you both," Sophie said. "I'll make sure we figure this out as soon as possible."
"See you soon, Sophie. Always great to have new company, especially someone who can deal with them." Marella pointed to Keefe.
"Hey!"
"They've been behaving pretty well, I think," Sophie told her.
"Hey!" Keefe's protest was even louder, but Sophie and Marella ignored them.
"That's a pretty good accomplishment. Next time we meet, you gotta tell me how you do it."
"I'm not sure what it is, but if I figure it out, I'll let you know."
"Linh, they're bullying me!"
Linh said nothing, ve only covered ver mouth with ver hand. "Tell me all about how it feels to be a human next time you see us."
"You're not even defending me!?"
Sophie smiled. Maybe this situation was more complex than she'd thought, but she was happy that she wasn't alone in this.

You ask I deliver — both tfatws asks in one!
tfatws weekly ask 1
i finally saw ep1!! i wont be able to see ep2 until thursday at the earliest but i already have some Thots on this ep. here are the ones I remember
first is, and i'm so sorry for this, a grammar lesson. an appositive is when you stick an additional phrase in between commas, dashes, or the like. i actually just used one! the "and i'm so sorry for this" in the first sentence of this paragraph is an appositive. thing is, most english speakers don't normally use them when they speak, only in writing. so i'm always on high alert whenever i hear somebody in tv or movies use one. (it's generally a marker of bad screenwriting). anyway there was one right in the beginning of the episode. the white army guy yelling at sam wilson said "first lieutenant Torres, our intel officer, will be helping on the ground." yeah so. the writing of this series started out on the wrong foot for me. but the rest of the episode was obviously tons and tons better (every interview i see with malcolm spellman makes me love him more and more)
the contrast between the opening minutes (falcon action sequence) and the rest of the ep.... i would 100000/10 rather watch a series with just sam and bucky dealing with life. i dont give a single crap about the flag-smashers or any of that. i just want sam, sarah & fam getting their boating business back on the ground & yeeting racist dickwads, bucky going through therapy and making amends, sam and joaquin being bros, sambucky homoerotic tension, etc.
the cinnamontography! wandavision mostly used cinematography to signify era n stuff. tfatws doesn't have wv's premise to go off of, so here's some tricks i noticed:
with sam there's obviously all sorts of shots with the captain america iconography next to his face, but he hasn't totally claimed it. there's the mural of steve rogers in the background; there's sam staring into the shield like it's a spectre of steve's face; there's sam looking into the exhibit, the shield and sam separated by glass and a layer of camera focus. steve is a constant spectre, always there, an idea, a symbol himself. sam's relationship with this iconography is distanced. he is separated by glass exhibit walls. by painting canvases. he doesn't yet feel worthy to take on that iconography. this whole thing was pulled off quite well but also a bit on-the-nose if only in quantity. there's just sooooo much fancy iconography stuff
speaking of the exhibit, there's something that i get real pissy about. it's when like, there's an action going on you're supposed to be paying attention to but the cinematographer is like,,,, hey! check out this location! or this headline! or something! there was a lot of that in the exhibit. the camera was like, you could focus on sam and rhodey's convo (which was fine but could have been so much better with an extra like 10 minutes of deep character study talk) but noooo you want me to look at the symbol for the united nations and read all the text about bucky who hasn't even showed up yet. shut up i know the lore and ill watch the shot-by-shot breakdown yt vids you don't have to make the shot this long jkdsalcjklasejf
my fav trick was with bucky and the therapist. i had seen a clip of the scene with bucky and the therapist beforehand and i thought the cinnamontography was super obnoxious, but then i was like, oh duh. the shots frequently change the distance between the camera and its subject. sometimes it's uncomfortably close and sometimes it's really far. a clear allegory for the duality of therapy, esp for bucky! therapy is an invasive process wherein he is ruthlessly examined, picked apart, and berated for his trauma (this therapist is crap in every way btw, "mean therapist" works for greg house and greg house only). so the camera goes close. it makes the viewer claustrophobic like bucky. but when he's like "no i haven't had any nightmares" the camera suddenly goes really far. we see bucky as this tiny head in the center of the bottom of the frame. we are distanced from him. he has pushed us away. we cannot see him. he lies because he is vulnerable. so yeah, amazing work there. the therapy scene was hard to watch on purpose!
did bucky slip a note to yori inside the dollar bill? bucky stop making me emooooo. the suuper awkward fake smile has me 😭 (veteran trying to adjust!)
mark my worrrrds when sam asks someone y the govt picked john “white bread” walker they’re gonna say “we needed somebody everyone can get behind....someone uncontroversial, someone everyone can see themselves in” like that exact racist dog whistle
tfatws weekly ask 2
just saw ep2 so im taking advantage of the 2 seconds i can be on tumblr without worrying about tfatws spoilers before new episode drops
when isaiah said "your people put me in prison for being a hero" and bucky thought "your people" means hydra. 🤦‍♂️
speaking of racism, the interplay between sam being Black (anti-Black racism) and sam being the Falcon (negrophilia, "can i take a selfie w you as i deny you a loan?") and the intersection between the two (j*hn lichrally called sam "steve's wingman"! he takes the crypto out of crypto-racist in like 2 seconds!) !!!!!!!! a Black celebrity's Black experience, the separation of man and identity!!!! (thinking about vanessa bayer in snl in that skit "beyonce is black" telling her black friend "you're not black, you're...my girl!")
after sam gets racially profiled by cops we see j*hn standing in front of cop cars cinematic parallels turns out j*hn is racist who knew
this therapist sucks major ass but she got bucky and sam together in the same room and ready to collaborate...that's something ig. it was lichrally couple's therapy she said she used her miracle exercise with couples sambucky antis get blended
bucky says "he was wrong about you so maybe he was wrong about me"...that's not how people talk. when therapist asks bucky, the guy who doesn't talk at all about himself, "y do you hate sam", the last thing bucky's gonna do is actually connect his hatred of sam to his own self-worth issues. bucky generally refuses to talk about himself, so why would he talk about himself in the one context that nobody ever links back to their own neuroses: hatred of other people? one thing human beings hate most is admitting we're wrong. admitting you hate someone because of your own issues? that's a major therapeutic step. bucky would absolutely have to be prompted to do that. even like one or two lines of dialogue more would have set up that line better. but in terms of the actual thought? an amazing way to take the sam/bucky relationship. bucky bases his self-worth on steve believing in him, and if steve is wrong bucky has no self-worth, so 1) he has to develop self-worth disassociated from steve's assessment of him and 2) he has to love himself before he can love sam, and 3) he has to realize that sam giving up the shield is a sign of sam's humility not his unworthiness.
conversely, we don't get into why sam hates bucky? yeah sam has the right to hate a guy that has tried to kill him (albeit while brainwashed) multiple times, and now shows up in his life just to bash him but. everything happens so fast i cant follow their relationship
in fact i dont feel like i understood much of anything. like y did bucky and sam go on that mission together? how connected are sam/bucky/joaquin with the government? doesn't bucky just want to retire now? literally what is everyone doing/feeling and why???
if battlestar becomes a knowing commentary on the black best friend stereotype i'm gonna party, but i dont expect much of that
the interplay between man and symbol. captain america is obviously a symbol. the shield is obviously a symbol. but steve rogers? the. man behind the cowl? he too seems to become a symbol. a paragon of a good guy, so good he's unreachable. steve was just a guy stop idolizing him the last thing steve would want is to be idolized
as the resident musician/music nerd on mcublr, 1) that captain america rally music slaps, but 2) re: the song at the end of the ep, if you're just gonna rip off mozart's lacrymosa then at least play mozart's lacrymosa. we wont blame you the lacrymosa slaps (if you dont know what im talking about go on yt and search it up youll recognize it fo sho
look i love enfys nest as much as the next guy but if tfatws is gonna get erin kellyman to play another innocent little gurl blackmailed into the fakeout-villain position (her text seemed to suggest as such) then 😡 like why can't women just....be evil? young, freckly, innocent-looking women? girls are not untouchable pure objects but full of rage and resentment just as much as anyone can be
bonus ep1 comment: bucky says about that senator whose car he hijacked, "she continued to abuse the power i gave her." fictionaldarling on yt say that he says "i" because he can't disassociate himself from his winter soldier persona which begets endless and senseless guilt. like dude. can i not be emo for like 1 second.
OKay. First off, as much I enjoy your sending it to me, what made you decide to send me these??

TFATWS WA #1
Don't worry about getting this to me as early as possible. I usually don't watch the episode right away.
1. Cool writing lesson.
2. Everyone wants a comedy show [like Friends] about the MCU superheroes.
3. Cinematography is always a beautiful thing.
4. Sam definitely has to carve his own Captain America status for himself, outside of Steve's ya know everything.
5. They have to do that for people who was just now tuning in because they're in love with Sam Wilson or Sharon Carter.
6. I think the therapist was taking a 'tough love' approach for Bucky, because she likely has some very strong opinions about the literal assassin she's been assigned to give therapy too. She did not choose to talk to him, she was assigned that make that clear in the second episode.
And, Bucky isn't lying when he said it wasn't a nightmare. It wasn't a nightmare, it was a resurfaced memory. So, technically he wasn't lying - and yes, the camera does move away because while he's saying he didn't have a nightmare, he's not expanding on what actually happened - so, he's still pushing the therapist/us away.
7. Bucky, and Steve, have/had a TON to adjust to.
8. Yeah, I agree that will be the bullshit line they give. If they ever actually talk about it.
TFATW WA #2
Yeah, always got to take advantage of avoiding those spoilers lmfaoo.
1. Honestly, that line was double meaning. Both about White people and Hydra [which is made up of mostly white supremacists/nazis] So, the line is gesturing to both White People in general and Hydra assholes together. I think the terminology is “double edge sword”??
2. This whole paragraph structure confused me, ngl - so I'm going to answer it the best I can. I do like that they're not ignoring the fact that Sam being Black is 1000% the reason he's not the Official Captain America - because the gov't is racist as hell.
I also like the little lines about how they point out little things about Sam's Falcon persona, like that kid calling him 'Black Falcon' specifically and Sam's response show the split between Sam and Falcon itself.
John is a dick for calling Sam the wingman of Steve Rogers. Sam was a hero all on his own before Steve asked him to join up again. [Side note, it's lichrally??]
3. Exactly, the parallel of Sam being profiled and surrounded while just on the street and John being surrounded by fans and being able to spring Bucky with apparently only a few sentences shows a Loooooot
4. Honestly, at this point I wonder if she's not actually a therapist and is just an agent assigned to assess Bucky outside of an Official Building. I do know, however, that her 'look at each other and speak' exercise is actually a real therapy practice. It's just a little slower.
5. Actually, I think he would've blurted that out. That whole line. I don't think Bucky hates Sam. I think they could've done the scene better, but I think that had Sam prodded him/the therapist been more annoying Bucky would've lost control of his emotions and blurted out the whole "If he was wrong about you, he was wrong about me" but I feel like the writing for this show is just... not there. Sometimes you blurt shit when you get overemotional and I think that was what Bucky was supposed to be like.
6. I don't think Sam hates Bucky, I think he doesn't trust him though. I do wish they'd talked about that though. The whole 'talk to each other' scene should've been a LOT longer and a LOT slower.
7. Sam and Bucky's relationship is being fast tracked because they don't really know how to work the relationship out, writers-room-wise. Bucky is technically retired, but I feel like he's trying to live up to Steve's expectations and doing what Steve would've done and we all know that if Steve was there, Steve would've jumped on that plane with Sam. It looks like Sam/Bucky/Joaquin are a side-team based from Military services but as Sam says they're all free agents so...?
8. Sadly, They seem to just be propping up to be another stereotype.
9. Captain America is a symbol. Steve Rogers is a man. But now Steve Rogers is an idol because of all the shit he's been through and honestly, it's not a bad thing he's become an idol for people - it's using Steve as a reason to make White Bread Walker the next Captain that makes Steve's idolization so fucked.
10. I don't know anything about music so I have no opinion here, sorry.
11. Enfys?? Also, I think they did the whole Innocent Girl Thing as side commentary for Bucky lowering his guard about seeing a young girl rather than a guy.
12. Bucky is the Winter Solider. The Winter Solider is Bucky. That is how Bucky will always see it because although he was brainwashed, it was still him and he remembers all of it. When you have constant memories of something 'someone else' did, you tend to not be able to pull the two personas out of each other. I want Bucky to take up the title, White Wolf instead of Winter Soldier. Honest.
This is all my opinion, I’m honestly a little disappointed with the writing of TFATWS so far so... I’m not really optimistic about this.
