Missed Opportunities: Naruto #2
Sasuke should not have been the last Uchiha! And I am not counting our dear villains, because by the end of the story, they have all died.
For as long as I can remember I've always questioned the Uchiha massacre. I understood pretty well why it happened, it wasn't Kishimoto's biggest screw-up in terms of plot either, but I never understood why only Sasuke survived. Ba, to create a narrative in which it would turn out that more people survived, further leaving the plot of Sasuke being the lonely prince, seemed quite simple to me. It wouldn't even have been necessary to change the main plotline, because it would have been enough that Sasuke would not have been aware of it.
Ah and I'm not including the Boruto storyline here, involving the existence of Sarada. I was never convinced about that continuation.
Why is it illogical that Sasuke was the only survivor? The simplest answer: experienced ninjas and a matter of chance.
Without questioning the abilities of Itachi (who, let's remember, was 13 years old) and Obito (who, while a bit older, was not in the best mental state).
Firstly, Konoha has highly developed medical assistance. The decision to massacre was made by three Hokage advisors. Even if he approved it, I do not believe that if it turned out that help had arrived quickly enough and someone could be saved he would not have allowed it. He has plenty of guilt anyway. (I don't deny that Danzo could have ordered his minions to finish everyone off, but well statistically as they say there is always someone.) Plus being in this profession - most tend to learn how to take a punch, and millimetres sometimes mean a lot.
Secondly how come everyone was supposedly in the village on the Uchiha land at the same time (and only Sasuke was returning late from the academy, where did the rest of the students go, were they faster than Sasuke?). I saw a post once that touched on this, but to repeat. It is known that as a result of the repression and resentment of civilians and some of the shinobi, the Uchiha tended to stay on the sidelines, but that doesn't change the fact that some of them were actively involved in missions - not all of them were in the police force. (I still don't believe that only Itachi and Shisui were in the Anbu.) And even if by some miracle no one had a mission outside the village, or Obito managed to kill all the active shinobi on a mission and no one noticed. It is to be believed that just that day, no one had any urgent business to attend to that would knock him out of his planned rhythm from even that morning. Sickness or childbirth that would have required the main hospital. A sudden visit to a further acquaintance, ba a visit to that cat village of theirs. People really are unpredictable and this kind of stroke of luck happens more often than we think. For example, the survivors of aeroplane crashes - the one girl who fell out of the plane, ended up in a jungle and found her way to civilisation.
Third, even persecuted societies are not homogeneous and the proverbial black sheep will be found everywhere. The proverbial considered from various angles. No matter how many times it was emphasized that everyone wanted to rebel against the village authorities, surely if a poll was conducted the results would not be everyone "- Itachi, Shisui and maybe Sasuke". Statistically there would certainly be votes of I don't know, yes but not strongly, or no but not strongly. So there were definitely a few people who had friends of friends or lovers outside the clan.
And this brings up the argument about infidelities, secret lovers and unplanned pregnancies. Regardless of the situation the clan was in and what rules were in place (trying to maintain the bloodline within the clan, etc.) - people are only human. Hence, as far as I remember, a good example is Izumi, who was drafted into the clan with her mother after it turned out that she had a sharingan (or maybe it was a fan interpretation? anyway). You mean to tell me that there were no Uchih children in the village who either didn't know they were Uchiha, or kept it a secret because that's what their parents wanted - so there wouldn't be a scandal. Especially considering that no matter how good a contraption is it's not foolproof. Additionally, from what I remember it was said somewhere that not every Uchiha needs to activate sharingan. Of course, if one succeeds, there is pride and all, but even considering Obito, no one denied that he was one even if they had different expectations of him. So there's probably a chance that the gene responsible for sharingan could skip a generation-which gives even more room for maneuver when it comes to these types of children.
Truly, I think there is a need for people with Uchiha blood who activated the sharingan, and thus confirmed their blood, as a result of the massacre - as they learned of the death of someone close to them. Or during an attack during the third round of the chunin exam. Or when Pain attacked. (Especially knowing that some activated in through Kyubi - Izumi). The chances that someone was pregnant with an Uchiha child and no one knew about it at the time of the massacre may not be that high, but the possibility that it happened a few times in the past is quite high.
Lastly, the argument goes back to our dear "villains", because if I'm already thinking like that, I could go back to them after all. Although their deaths had a purpose, I still think that both in Itachi's and Obito's cases, if they survived by some miracle, it would be more interesting to see them atone for what they have on their conscience. Particularly Itachi who we know was sick and went untreated anyway. Probably even if they had started treating him after the war he would not have had many years to live.
I would really like to see a scene, especially after the final battle with Naruto, where Sasuke learns that he is not the last one and that if he had stayed in the village he would have found out, either as he gained the rank of chunin (if they were untrained adults) or as soon as it became safe again (in the case of children, to help them - especially if any had trained at the academy).
Let's not kid ourselves, Sasuke always wanted a family (or at least when he was younger he certainly would have appreciated it).
#naruto#missed opportunities#sasuke uchiha#uchiha clan#uchiha massacre#and the bullshit around it#uchiha obito#uchiha itachi#uchiha shisui#if anything that I wrote was true#than Kakashi would have been profesional teacher for Uchiha students XD#no matter the age#as Sasuke would only be able to replace him after gaining his sharingan#plot holes#people are unpredictable#and if history teach as anything#is that everything is possible#look at Obito and his “death”#are you talling me that uchiha love is so strong that they do not cheat#or that they always fall for people that are accepted by clan#i do not think so#that reminds me on this au were shisui did have some unplaned babies#i really want some random Konoha citizens to activate their sharingans#it would be so funny#especially if some grandma did

this field card looks somewhat like the temples in Bhubaneshwar
The temple in the field card shares some similarities with the Deula Style of temple architecture found especially in the Odisha state of India.
They both have the dome at the top with the finial (also known as shikhara) as well as the ridged architecture.
#nobody asked for this but here is a crash course on temple design#me flexing my 1/3rd history degree#they look pretty similar imo#never say that yugioh is not teaching you anything#yugioh#cide watches yugioh#cide watches yugioh dm#yugioh dm#yugioh duel monsters

people in the archaeology subreddit digging up the corpse of indiana jones again for the annual discourse. somehow seem to have forget the most important scene in the film if you’re critiquing his status as an academic
#like??? what????????? why bother discoursing about whether he’s an ethical practitioner if you don’t even remember we have MULTIPLE scenes#of him teaching. at least one student brings up the contemporary equivalent of a field school. he DID do normal archaeology#that’s just not what the movies are about bc they’re based more on pulp adventure novels#i’m so tired of the usual ‘he’s a bad archaeologist’ argument from people who don’t actually know a) what archaeology looked like in the 30s#or b) that dr jones is actually *remarkably ahead of his time* on certain topics. like not fuckin stealing grave goods#his real world contemporaries were openly engaging in the trafficking of artifacts if anything indiana jones is giving them a BETTER#reputation what with the actually not being a fascist. and at least nominally respecting local/descendant communities (depending on which#movie/writer we’re talking about)#if you know nothing about the history of the field you do NOT get to critique it#‘at least the people in jurassic park were actually paleontologists’ YEAH . IN THE 80S. INDIANA JONES IS A PERIOD PIECE#HES CHRONOLOGICALLY ACCURATE FOR MOST THINGS AND WILDLY ANACHRONISTIC *IN A BETTER WAY* FOR OTHERS

Being constantly reminded in the class I'm TAing for this semester of my 7th grade history teacher who decided to spend the year teaching us about the history of Haiti, South Africa, China, and Chile - by which I mean basically the contents of The Black Jacobins, anti-Apartheid activists (I remember that we watched the biopic of Stephen Biko), the Cultural Revolution, and the coup against Salvador Allende and the repression under Pinochet's government - at a school which was about 70% Black, less than 10% white, and solidly 80-90% immigrant kids. Also she was a lesbian and I know this because she mentioned her wife once or twice. Literally who was doing it like her
#she's the person that republicans are scared of and also she was such a good teacher#i remember so much from that class even though at this point it was well over 10 years ago#literally immunization against 'the us education system doesn't teach you anything' WELL IT COULD#the further i actually get into academia the more i'm amazed at how much of that she managed to bring to 13-year-olds#also this was the school that was 67% haitian so spending half a year talking about haitian history was very cool of her#perce rambles#also real boston moment but her being a lesbian never really even registered as notable#only by being on tumblr have i realized that growing up with 15 million married lesbians around you was not a common experience#the more salient thing i remember is that she had a dog named palomita#anyways shout out to ms [redacted] you were a real one

do we think this author can handle this challenge when so many other authors who tried to do the same epically failed?? suppose we’ll find out
#it’s bc they approach it with a very very narrow mindset of how these gender roles came into being#trying to reverse it just. doesn’t work. without going deep deep deep into gender theory and history#every author ive seen attempt this has not succeeded#and frankly i don’t trust tricia levenseller to succeed either#not unless an author has done a shit ton of research on gender theory and family history#or like. even one college level class. one families in former times lecture. SOMETHING.#idk it’s never approached correctly and never does what they set out to do#and it definitely doesn’t teach anyone anything#if anything it just enforces men who believe they’re being attacked bc feminism exists#anyway

i have to know what presidents you used to have a crush on as a kid. i require this information /lh
fine. you'll get the forbidden knowledge.
it was barack obama, abraham lincoln and george washington off the top of my head. also john f. kennedy when i was 14/15 at a brief time
#(AGAIN I WAS LIKE 7 FOR MOST OF THEM)#(i saw obama everywhere because i grew up during his presidency and heard he was a good guy and i thought “hes handsome :)”#(i thought george washington was cool but they didnt teach me any bad things about him until like high school)#(my school sucked and told me lincoln “defeated slavery” and that was the main thing i knew about him until middle school)#why schools need proper education over historical events but i digress#i had a crush on alot of historical / political figures as a kid#(amelia earhart was my first female crush when i was 8)#i dont know exactly why still#i think its because i was really into history at the time (including american history)#but thats more of a guess than anything#[radio jargon]

Respectfully. I am tired of being helpful :)
#hold on let me have the five seconds of indignation out and i shall be sane again#i taught the first engineer boy to buy flowers for his performing significant other at a concert#i taught him how to roll up his sleeves and fix his darn shirt. and how to dress for this kind of event#i stayed with him because he was a little antsy about meeting the girl's parents#i taught him to offer to hold a lady's bag on the walk home#and that was just today. i did not need to do those things WHY did i do those things#i am thankfully not in love with him anymore so that's not the problem#the problem is that im sick and tired of being the one who Helps and the one who Aids and the one who assists in smoothing the way for his#happiness. and that is a bit of a blanket statement im not claiming to have formed him like pygmalion and galatea or anything#it is just. i know i HAVE smoothed the way and i know there is no thanks for it not that im asking for it#i just resent the fact that this is my role. stagehand in other people's stories#again!!!!!!!!!!!!!#like why am i the one teaching you how to treat a girl well. considering the history and circumstances

haha i remember last year when there were two gun threats and a bomb threat at my school. i remember being fucking terrified to go to school for a week. i remember my brother going to seventh grade and my first thought being how do i help him if there's a real gun threat. this country is bullshit
#tw guns#i'm working on my gold award for girl scouts and i considered focusing on gun laws#ultimately didn't choose it because it would be too much for me to handle#my mom used to teach and a twelve year old came to her school with a gun#she had to watch him point it at a teacher#almost had to testify in court#in seventh grade my friend came in to history one day and sat down and said she had heard two kids talking about how they were going to#shoot up the school on friday and i was like well did you tell someone#she said no it's probably fake#(BUT WHAT IF IT ISN'T. WHAT THEN. CAN YOU LIVE WITH YOURSELF IF IT ISN'T.)#i said well you need to tell someone#she said#holy fuck she said “i don't want to miss class”#that's going to be the least of your worries if it's a real threat#we got into a yelling argument and the teacher was like okay go talk to your counselor#i didn't go to school on friday#how could i i was so fucking scared#we got at least three fake threats that year#i hate this country#a#i've never really talked about anything like this idk if i need to add any more tw tags#if i should please lmk

im from northern norway and i've been pretty lucky with the way most teachers tried to fulfill the learing requirements in the sense that I've actually learned about saami history and erasure, because apparently down in the south of norway a lot of teachers just. skip over the part where the norwegian government tried to erase saami culture and very nearly succeeded so yeah. kinda fucked up that.
#the norwegian curriculum is very open so most teachers are free to do whatever they want to reach the learning goals#and in many ways this is absolutely brilliant because you're not really being micromanaged in what you can and can't teach#but on the other hand it's not great that some really important and dark parts of norwegian history is skimmed over#some of my fellow students from the south didn't even know that the erasure still happens! and they didn't know how shameful being saami wa#for so long! Many people (me included) have saami roots that we're not truly aware of due to this shame because our family members hid -#- themselves away and it's tragic. my case is a bit different because it involves an adoption after ww2 so it's a bit messy#but even after getting in contract with our bio family it's not something spoken about at all. my dad gets angry if i even bring it up tbh#i don't even think i could claim being saami or anything like that. it's not something i feel i can connect with and it's sad that it was#taken from me#but it is what it is

its occurring to me that i might not actually hate geography and just thought that bc every time i had to do geography as a kid it entailed perfectly colouring in and labelling a map of canada
#for non-canadian people seeing this#you ever see all those little islands off nunavut?#yeah try colouring each and every one of those in. with shitty grade school pencil crayons.#also trying to label any of the maritime provinces is actually hell#btw im thinking about this bc im looking into if i can declare 2 minors to go along w my major#and i think geography would overall be a good choice for anything having to do w history#but especially since im going into teaching#i also may or may not have had a mild existential crisis last night over the fact that if i find myself not wanting to get into teaching#theres basically nothing else for me to do with my degree#so now im like. what minor would support a different career that goes along with history?#i could do public policy since that would help with archiving and other government shit#but also. thats an offshoot of polisci. i dont wanna be associated with those guys.#ughhhhhhhhhh whatever ill figure it out#ramblings

I need to reread the comics again to have specific arguments/evidence for this, but like
I feel a bit like I could've been sympathetic to the way other Cybertronian colonies view Cybertron, if it weren't for the fact that at least several of them (as in, ones that get notable dialogue/screen time) are so low-key self-righteous?
Like, idk... there's a lot of criticism of Cybertronians because they're so "warlike" and how their obsession with violence and vengeance is just dragging the whole galaxy down with them, but uh. The Autobot-Decepticon war was basically a product of societal ills bubbling over for like 6 million years beforehand and then finally boiling over into a 4 million year war that lasted as long as it did because the people involved had immense social/psychological trauma from being "raised" in an oppressive society.
So when the colonists come in being all 'omg you people are so violent and uncivilized why don't you just like, stop fighting' it kind of pissed me off a little bit as a reader/person like. Idk the colonists really came into this society of people full of massive amounts of trauma where even before the war society was super oppressive and no one has any experience of living "normal" lives unaffected by violence and bigotry. And the colonists were like "ummm wow why don't you guys just??? stop fighting???." Like idk it wasn't EVERY SINGLE MOMENT, in fact I think that when it was played for laughs it's quite a funny "fridge horror" type element. It was just annoying because like.... IDK???? It's just really annoying to watch a bunch of people who lived relatively sheltered lives on their own planets come to a different planet full of traumatized people and be like "omg why are you people so fucked up" IDK BRO MAYBE BECAUSE THEIR SOCIETY WAS OPPRESSIVE AND THEY LIVED THROUGH A LIFELONG WAR???
It also doesn't help that the colonies were literally founded based on imperialism and conquest so like, it's fucking rich to hear colonists scolding Cybertronians for their violence ruining the whole galaxy while literally sitting on planets that their Primes colonized from others. The hypocrisy of this is briefly mentioned in Unicron (literally the FINAL STORY OF THE SERIES) but like, that's basically the only time Cybertronian characters are given a reprieve of sympathy from other characters in universe and it's so tiresome.
I've talked to other people who didn't like the colonists and thought they basically (narratively speaking) existed just to shit on the existing characters, and it's actually really easy for me to sympathize with/outright agree with that assessment of the story considering how much of exRID/OP seems to be preoccupied with "Cybertron/the Primes/Optimus sucks" with very few reprieves for anything positive happening and even fewer chances for characters to get to explain themselves and experience a little bit of justice? Like, as the audience, it's just very frustrating to see the characters you spent hundreds of issues keeping up with get shit on by a bunch of "literally-who"s and then not really get a chance to ever defend themselves, either by literally defending themselves in conversation or having some sort of narrative thing happening that vindicates them at least symbolically
#squiggposting#paused work to muse about this which i prolly shouldn't have lol#oh well i'll still get stuff done#like idk an example of this is how pyra criticized OP for using religion to manipulate people#(lets just ignore how she said she would teach OP but never actually did)#but in the story there's never any sort of confrontation where pyra learns about history or talks with OP#and OP gets to be like. yeah on my planet primes fucking sucked and i'm the only one trying to redeem their image#also ive been fighting an endless war that lasted 4 mil years in which me being a shining figurehead was basically#the sole motivating force keeping my army from just collectively succumbing to endless despair#and i also had to use this shining figurehead image i had to keep the opposing army from genociding a bunch of organics#like not once does OP get to express his side of things he's basically just shit upon endlessly by other characters as he keeps doing plot#i feel like i had another example but i can't recall who/what was involved lmao#like idk it's not just that barber's writing is depressing and dark and edgy. i LIKE stories that do that kind of thing#it's just that it feels a bit as if the story is ENDLESSLY depressing and dark and edgy with almost no reprieve#as if it's mostly presenting the flaws of the characters with no chance for them to justify or redeem themselves#idk i feel like there was another better point/example i was gonna make but i can't remember it#like idk i guess a dark depressing story would've been better if the characters at least got to defend themselves#bc as is it basically feels like they (esp OP) get shit on endlessly and never once get to express anything about it#so like. they get shit on in universe. but also as the reader since there's never a contradicting viewpoint or the character defending them#it's as if you're supposed to take this one-sided criticism of them at face value and it just doesn't seem fair AS THE READER#if i read about OP getting shit on by some people and defended by others and also him expressing his opinion on himself#then that just feels like a normal fair narrative where i get to take sides#but if it's just OP being shit on and he hardly expresses much about it#then it feels like i as the reader am expected to agree with the portrayal being shown?#but in reality the portrayal just feels negative and unfair and one sided to me#and why the fuck do i want to read a story that's just the characters i know and like on an endless shame parade#also shout out to 'literally who' aka slide calling OP 'literally fascist' lmao#one of the most cringe moments of the entire comic. wait no. i can think of a more cringe Slide Moment#when unicron is about to destroy the planet and trypticon is getting shot and dying(?) in the background#and the story decides to pause and focus on Slide so she can monologue about how evil and tyrannical OP is
