Because i saw someone on X putting these two pic next to each other, and i couldn't stop thinking about it all day and had to write a loooonnngg paragraph to explain how beautiful and well considered these covers are

i see hidden meaning all over it, and im screaming!

In the first one (Mimir Yamato), all the other members are awake, some are chatting , some are just staring at the camera WHILE two members are looking else where, which is the sleeping Yama, and as u can see in the pic up there, These two are Riku and Mitsu

And this is insane cuz u know well my fellow i7 lovers how important Mitsu was in Yamato's character development, so it makes a lot of sense that he is genuinely worried about him (BESTIES FR)

As for Riku , im not so sure about it, so feel free to correct me if it's wrong

Riku has always received some kind of different treatment from Yamato , and we see that a lot if u rewatch the series like me for 1000 times

So naturally, Riku would also feel the same way as Yamato does toward him !

Another thing to add about Riku is that both he and Yamato are VERY important members to the group

Riku being the center - Yama being the leader

Hence, they both burden a lot of pressure in keeping the group together

As for the second pic, the memebers are all asleep while Yamato is wide awake (being silly and bad boy)

Refrencing how serious he is in keeping his friend protected, away from harm even in their weakness (sleeping)

Not to forget

That Yamato indeeed was ready to leave the group behind just to keep them safe from all the bad gossip and reputation they would gain if his "secret" was to get exposed

HEHE HIIII I want 1) playable kairi and 2) i want the destiny trio's dynamic to be flipped and for kairi to save sora and riku for once. emphasis on riku because i feel like a lot of fans & even the games forget that riku and kairi genuinely care for one another.

my ideal kh4 would have kairi basically go "idc if you dont think im strong enough yet im tired of just standing here while u guys need my help" and basically decide to go to quadratum despite rikus wishes and she saves riku from getting plummeted by heartless (or whatever enemies are in kh4) or smth and shes like haiii ^__^ and riku apologizes for considering her too weak in melody of memory (im sorry that scene made me mad because i dont think riku would say that hes literally the one who gave her her keyblade in kh2!! but i digress) and they go off to find sora together. but i dont think itll happen this way sadly :(

do you ever think about how like. kairi was asleep for a year searching for sora’s heart and sora was asleep on that couch (for a week? a year? however the time difference works in unreality) and reached out to kairi’s heart somehow (assuming it wasn’t just her subconscious creating an image of sora) like do you ever think about both of them being asleep at the same time for a significant period of time and their hearts connecting with one another across realities within their dreams. do you ever think about what a beautiful image that is

sweetie. sweaty. honey. I only think about this maaaybe once a day. And that's not that hyperbolic. I mean you really said it all--They are literally BONDED across the chasm of reality itself. We can all speculate whether it's from the paopu fruit (as I think) or just The Power of Love™️, but regardless it's beyond romantic. And it was when she needed him. She needed him, and he was there. Whenever she needs him, he never lets her down, literally using himself (projected on to her I guess?) as a shield. I have no hands here, so let me use yours, I'll give you my keyblade, I'll give you my strength. Even when I'm in unreality you are not allowed to mess with Kairi. How many times must I teach you this lesson old man?

I do think what you pointed out about it happening when they're both sleeping is really interesting. There is a wonderful symmetry to it, dreaming of each other, reaching for each other--in a world without you, i'll dream of you, right? It seems that's how Yozora reaches Sora too, and possibly riku, given the endings of Remind and kh3? some very weird jumbling of memory and dream going on here. It reminds me a bit of CoM, where Sora is put to sleep in order to unscramble his memories. The concepts of dream and memory and sleep are often found together in kh. once nomura puts you to sleep, no telling what weird shit's going to happen to you lol. oh the sweet sweet torment of kh mysteries.

And iirc from a nomura interview from after the trailer drop it seems Sora was asleep from the time between kh3/remind and this moment of waking in the kh4 trailer, and that he was asleep for seven days (because of course he was). So either a week in unreality is a year in kh time, or there's even zanier time shenanigans at play. It could just be a way to quickly handwave over the intervening time, so they might gloss over all of this, but I really do hope they'll show us or describe to us the MoM scene from Sora's POV (and also how/when he got changed into his new 'fit lol). I wrote that mini fic on the MoM scene because it's so fascinating to me. He just knew. She must have been calling out to him, and he knew. How did he know she needed him? How did he get to her? I have to lie facedown now.

The fact that Kairi thanked Sora at the end, to me at least, (and im not a sap nor am i biased in any way) says that it was actually Sora, not her own imagining of him. But it does present this interesting idea if it is some sort of self creation--that in a moment of weakness, again her own demons, when she needs strength and courage, when she feels she's not enough, she thinks of sora, and that gives her that courage and strength. I mean, who does she know that's defeated Xehanort? (If you can't get Sora himself, store-bought is fine).

Anyway, I actually rewatched the kh4 trailer a few days ago and I still clutched my chest when it first reveals Sora on the couch. I don't think I'll ever forget how I felt seeing him there, knowing he was (at least to some extent) alright, seeing him so altered and grown up, so far from all he's known. KH certainly isn't in Kansas anymore. Just think, what if Sora had just saved Kairi, right before that moment cuts in and he opens his eyes? A girl can dream.

answering this ask Maria (can I call you that? mutual level up?), you literally have me kicking my feet under my desk like a middle schooler after the big dance. this was good for my soul. Kh always makes sure there's something spicy even in the seemingly innocuous titles, and wow, MoM truly has a banger. A love banger. This is where I'm torn. Because a sokai reunion after returning from unreality would be oh so sweet. If either Sora or Kairi don't fall to the ground because their knees give out when they see one another, it won't be angsty enough for me. And you've discussed before, Kairi doesn't have to girlboss her way to Shibuya in order for kh4 to be satisfying, iirc. and Im with you on that. to me, she's as much 'home' to Sora as DI is, so it could be a very cathartic way to end kh4, similar to the end of kh2. But also, them reuniting in quadratum, then perhaps even teaming up? sweet dreams are made of this.

will i trim this down? no. should I have? probably. but im so happy I have a fellow new fan to enjoy the ride with. we both missed the hype for 3, but hot damn, we arguably picked the best time to become kh fans. I’m remembering the part in KH3 where Sora worries about Mickey and Riku going to find Aqua, so he/Ventus volunteers to go and EVERYONE JUST LAUGHS AT HIM it’s so mean, he feels so bad gosh I just get so mad at the way the other characters treat Sora in this game.

He just wants to help this whole time and he goes through this series having EVERYTHING put on his shoulders as the one who will save the light but then in this game is constantly belittled about being weak and reckless and made to feel stupid just gets me. Even his friends are teasing him a little too much it feels and Im just saying it’s no wonder the poor kid had a meltdown in the Keyblade Graveyard.

IM GONNA BE COMPLETELY HONEST I LOVE KAIRI SO MUCH BUT I HATE HOW SQUARE USES HER.

anyways, heres my kairi headcanons and my explanation for my hc design.

first off, eyes and hair. i really like the headcanon that kairi and lea are siblings, i really vibe with that. they're siblings so much, but they're siblings who were separated in a custody battle so they never got to properly know eachother. i blended her canon blue eye color with lea's, and same with the hair.

everyone on destiny islands spar for fun, they're very competitive. the reason why kairi doesnt is because she'd kick everyone's asses. she doesn't like showing off, though.

she's banned from joining riku and sora in their races, since she wins everytime.

she still gets her keyblade in the canon story, but before that, she gets a legend-of-zelda-esc bow of light. and a spear. its a light infused knife stick :)

so? much?? sarcasm??? she hates being viewed as weak because she's a girl, and she is always sarcastic with people who underestimate her.

also, sometime soon after birth by sleep, kairi summons a keyblade completely by accident. her parents didnt know what to do. congrats aqua.

strangely, she met vanitas once, sometime before aqua arrived at radiant garden, she noticed vanitas just hiding. she enjoyed his jump at her sudden greeting. vanitas is very fun to startle.

I'm going to be honest, really not a fan of how everyones treating Sora in kh3, even if it's under the guise of "jokes" it's happened in other games before but it feels distinctly mean spirited in this game- like he never really gets a moment of reprieve, everyone always shuts him down whenever he's upset and is immediately "Chin up, Sora", he's pretty much called dumb and weak multiple times, which is especially nasty since he's clearly sensitive after losing some of his power after the last game- like it's honestly just bizarre because I'm sure I'm meant to take it as a joke but it's not funny? It just feels like bullying and the fact that Riku of all people is also engaging in this behaviour makes it all the more awful. The character in persona 2 who used water attacks was eikichi mishina, a very flamboyant character and flirtatious character with a lot more going on than just that. I think water would be a good element for Riku but whichever one you think fits him more :) very excited to see how you develop your AU in the future.

Was Terra, Aqua and Ventus Wasted Potential?

“Wasted potential? What do you mean?”

Well, what I mean is that was a lot built up for these three which could have possibly made them not only some of the best characters in the series but even the best trio. 

DISCLAIMER: If you like TAV, that’s great and I’m not trying to say that they’re objectively (ugh, that word makes me cringe) bad. I’m simply giving my thoughts on how they were handled as characters and I simply ask that you just hear me out.

With that out of the way, let me explain by going into each character specifically.

TERRA

(Shown above is Terra realizing that he has been fooled. Captain Hook has told him that he was to guard a box of light from Peter Pan. He then “jobs” the forever young Peter. “Job” is a form of the word “jobber”, which means which means to be “someone who's job it is to lose.“ But he soon finds out that he was lied to (shocking) and that he fought Peter for no reason (it wasn’t for no reason my son, Peter Pan is clearly the mind of a grown ass man in a teen’s body lusting for a small child on an island of children. Peter Epstine.))

The most offensive one by far. Terra falls for a lot of fucking stupid shit. And I mean a lot of fucking stupid shit. It’s pretty much unjustifiably bad. I’ll spare you the “Terra is soooo dumb he’s so bad xD” because I think at this point you already get the idea. If not, go play Birth By Sleep cutscenes with Terra and then come back.

For some context, let’s look at things from Terra’s perspective. He’s a young adult, fresh out of being a teenager and he’s practically been coddled his entire life. While he’s very confident in his ability, Eraqus doesn’t see it that way. Eraqus said straight up to his face that Terra’s hunger for power out of fear of losing will beckon the darkness. But during the game, Terra sees again and again that his weakness is what’s getting in his way. Darkness is a way to stop weakness. Xehanort is a way to stop weakness. We’ve all been there. There’s something we clearly shouldn’t do but it’s a temptation. Not only this but I bet there was a time where we thought we knew what was best for us and not our parents, right? The darkness isn’t what Eraqus wants for him, but it gives him strength and Xehanort, another master, a well respected keyblade wielder, says that it’s something that needs to be kept as a balance.

Unlike Riku, he didn’t use the darkness as a coping mechanism for not being able to deal with being second place, he used it as a means to protect those closest and prove that there can be a balance between light and dark. Sure, Riku was trying to protect and save Kairi but that was under the pretense of Sora supposedly not caring and him also wanting to prove that he was better than Sora. It was partly driven by a sense to save her and also partly driven by wanting to prove he was superior. Terra didn’t want to prove superiority, he wanted to prove he was strong. Able to have the strength to protect what matters.

But no let’s just portray that in the worst way possible so he just looks like an idiot and everyone can just call him bad Riku. Thanks BBS writing staff! He falls for everything, Xehanort is shown as the most comically evil person in existence, his father figure is a fucking asshole, his friends are flat and they have no connection to him. There’s literally so much wrong with this man, let’s just move on.

AQUA

Aqua was… flat to say the least in BBS. She was effectively just kind of the maid. I don’t have anything to say about what Aqua really was. She wasn’t anything. She was the cleanup crew straight man that just did cool shit. I don’t really have much of anything to say about her, she’s just kind of boring. In Birth By Sleep. 0.2 and KH3 had a huge thing going on with Aqua being stuck in the Realm of Darkness.

Now disclaimer, I’m a bit of an angst fiend. I like drama. I like struggle. So when I heard about Aqua being trapped in the RoD for so long just for her to just be... her in KH3. I was immensely disappointed. She’s been in a place that’s literally comparable to hell for so long and she’s just like “Good morning Ven.” all normal and shit. She even fights the same. She should’ve turned into a monster. Not like a heartless but a literal killing machine. You remember how Roxas can use magic with no keyblade? This implies that keyblades are simply mediums to cast it and that it’s possible to not use one when doing magic. The entire organization does this in fact.

So. Why. Can’t. The. Magic. Prodigy. And. Keyblade. Master. Use. Magic. Without. A. Keyblade. Why. Didn’t. She. Use. A. Stick.

“Roxas, that’s a stick” is a joke and all but dude was deadass serious about using that if it meant Xion wouldn’t be disposed of. You’re telling me Aqua couldn’t use a stick to at least cast some spells? Hell man do some JoJo bullshit where she throws a handful of a sand and uses all those grains as a medium with a charge of magic that might not be exactly effective but could still be annoying and or hurt.

Let’s just look into her mental too. Xehanort made Terra use the darkness and then as a result of letting the darkness into his heart, couldn’t control it and let himself be a vessel for Xehanort.

I got told a hard “no” by several people but fuck y’all, it makes PERFECT sense for Aqua to have a prejudice against darkness after all of that. YES she would wind up like Eraqus. She wasn’t aware of the whole “being a darkness bigot actually gave me darkness all along” speech that Eraqus gave simply because she wasn’t there. This arc could’ve been so much more. Firstly, in her being like Eraqus, it would’ve shown his impact on her as a father figure and just how much he was instilling into her through his own fears and experience as a keyblade master.

She would’ve started out just understanding Eraqus’ POV but after all that trauma from the Nort situation and being stuck in the ROD? She would’ve most likely fully embraced it. “Let the darkness die.” she says as she uses Eraqus’ chain magic to hold Ansem in place instead of just trying to fight him fucking barehanded just to be jobbed.

God and then just imagine, a Riku going in to save Aqua. She’s not explicitly filled with darkness to where you can see it and she’s all edgy, but she didn’t just live in the RoD for a long time, she’s conquered it. At this point she’s extremely off the deep end into killing anything with a hint of shadow. And then she notices Riku. Who’s very explicitly using the darkness and has no issue doing so. And instead of Sora coming through and being the one to save her, it’s Riku and Sora.

Riku shows her that the darkness can be used to protect those closest and to have the strength to protect what matters. Sora shows her that despite the darkness taking hold of Riku, he never let go because Sora needed to be the light to guide him back. Aqua needs to be the light to guide Terra back and she can’t do that if she’s destroying hers to fight for a goal with no end in sight. In the graveyard and vs Vanitas she can fight dirtier to signify how much she’s grown to fight for survival rather than fighting fair.

This’ll also give her character some purpose post KH3, gives her something to work towards. And overall, it’ll show that there is a way to save someone like this. They couldn’t save Eraqus but they can save Aqua.

But no she like “good morning ven” and gets thrown into the ocean after putting up something that barely counts as a fight and then like gets sad and like cries about it and comes to the surface like “you lied michael” and then like fights the exact same and has like no change this entire time. Yeah because it’d be too boring to have life long friends have to reunite and see how they’ve changed overtime. Aqua and Terra having long lasting mental and physical changes would be suuuuuch a cool thing as they try and reconnect with all the lost time with Ventus. But that’s not our reality unfortunately.

VENTUS

Have you ever realized that when like you were in a scenario with like two other people and... they knew something but- like you don’t have to be close to these two people but just saying that if there was a situation in which you were near two other individuals who- like well they can be close but it doesn’t matter it just matters because in this specific situation you-)

I don’t think there’s a main trio character as hated as Ventus. People really do not like this guy which is unfortunate because I think he’s pretty neat. I’ve heard a lot of conflicting things on what he’s supposed to be or what his character is, so… I’m gonna skip him! I think he’s fine enough as is with what KHUx is bringing so we’ll see how the future of the series treats him. I guess that makes this into more of a “Let me complain about Terra and Aqua for a few minutes” but Ventus is just kind of alright as is. Let’s just wait on phase 2 and see how they treat our boy.

favorite thing about them

her desire to be loved, and how later down the line that translating to her need to useful. it’s very similar to kairi in that instead of getting down over her weakness she learns from it and does something about it. while kairi strives to be stronger, naminé works to use the skills she already has to help as much as she can to make up for her past mistakes, and because she cares so much about all these people she’s only an observer to.

the whole reason naminé did what the organization wanted (when they weren’t using her) was because she just wanted to mean something to someone. she wanted to be sora and riku and kairi’s friend. even though she’s “an abomination,” even though she “isn’t meant to exist,” that didn’t mean those feelings weren’t there, and more than anything she wanted them to be realized.

she’s so wistful and yearns so much for love and it’s so painful and so endearing. with how badly she wanted it, the point the series is in now, where everyone is together, is enough for her. she just wanted everyone to be whole and friends, and not being at the center of it, not even really being included, is fine with her. she loves so hard that as long as the people she wants to be friends with are happy, then she’s okay, even if she has no place in it. but i want so badly for someone to reach out their hand and invite her in. to pull her into the circle and welcome her as their friend. i hope the fact that riku actually did this is good sign that from here on out the only things naminé will know are the very love and friendship she so desperately wanted since the very beginning.

also it’s not something that i “like” about her because it’s good or enjoyable but i find it so interesting how plainly her horrible self esteem and guilt is put on display. sora’s tells her not to cry and she says “you’re right, i don’t really have the right.” “oh, okay. nobody needs to keep a bunch of memories that arent real right? you want to remember all the people who are really important to you. anybody... would choose that” hearing her say those things breaks my heart and i want so badly for her to slowly learn to let go of the past and learn to love herself

least favorite thing about them

nothing about her character, but i hate that she’s shipped with riku so much. it makes me so uncomfortable for reasons i can’t really explain but i genuinely hate that ship so much

honestly i dont think i have one besides shipping related? i def think she should have a keyblade though she’d be more of a mage (maybe she trains under daisy/minnie or donald?). i’d love to see her interact with the wayfinder trio, especially aqua and terra. maybe that she’s such a vital character to the story? or that her being a villain would’ve be interesting, though ive def seen other people think the same thing. im not sure really.

oh i thought of one!! naminé def deserves to be a part of the heart hotel. her being excluded from something else yet again makes me sad and if vanitas counts, her coming from sora’s body should def count as well. (kairi too!! also naminé trans)

tbh kairi’s theme mostly, specifically the more somber part in the second half of the melody because i feel like that represents her well, as “kairi’s shadow” and knowing the darker stuff of kairi’s heart
