Slippers of Gold, Dreams of Silver.

I ran an RP event today that is leading into a public event here pretty soon. I wrote descriptions for some Fae folk that I enjoyed, so I’m putting them here!

Eight fey NPCs; wanderers from between stars. Represent the wheel of the year. Will reveal themselves fully at the gazebo in Lakeland, one at each pillar.

 Longing-Mirror, Winter Solstice:

 A being shimmers into visibility; a swirl of snowflakes settle themselves into a long mane of white hair that crowns a wizened, pale-skinned crone. Her eyes, when opened, reveal themselves to be glacial meltwater blue and have no pupils; her hands are gnarled and hold a staff with shattered mirrors set into its entire length. She wears a long white coat trimmed with spotted furs, and a pair of impossibly-delicate golden leather boots. “They call me Longing-Mirror, spirit of the Winter Solstice,” she says, her voice like the boom and crack of ice over a river. “I hold the keys to reflecting upon death while it waits to become life once more.” 

Pooling-Candle, Imbolc:

A rosy-pink burning pillar candle appears, and with the sound of a young girl's laughter, a shape is illuminated behind it, her small hands cupping the scented wax light. Her skin glows a deep amber with an immortal sheen, her hair a wild mop made from braids of dried corn husks that move with a life of their own every time she takes a step. The young girl's wide yellow eyes are always sparkling with a smile, and her many layers of patchwork sweaters and skirts seem to be  endlessly deep and shifting. She wears fluffy bedroom slippers---are those moogles? hard to tell under all the layers---made of a lustrous deep gold, and they never seem to fully touch the ground. "Hi! I'm Pooling-Candle! I'm, um, the spirit of that time between winter and spring, when the ground gets ready to grow, and all the little lambs are born!" 

 Bird’s-Lost-Berry, Spring Equinox:

A tall figure with the long, spotted ears of a hare in place of where Hyuran ears would be steps up to the group as if they had just been out for an afternoon stroll and happened upon the picnicking friends. "Well, well-oh! Hello, fellows! Name's Bird's-Lost-Berry, child of a chilly rainstorm and a white cherry! I dance for the glory of Spring; though, truth be told, I'll dance for most anything." The androgynous being sweeps a bow, dressed head to toe in a tuxedo fashioned of moss with wildflowers running through it, wearing laced pointe shoes made of buttercup-gold. Their pale tan face with a spray of fawn's freckles is youthful and impossibly elegant, their hair a carefully-cultivated patch of deep green with robin's-egg-blue highlights. They seem to sing every word in a perfect alto melody, reminiscent of fine wind chimes.

Nineteen-Tines, Beltaine:

 A hunting horn sounds, and the long, mournful cry of a wolf follows it. As if exiting overgrown forest to find a clearing, a hulking, muscular figure steps into view, crowned by a rack of mossy antlers. His eyes are the iridescent, glowing green of a predator's by lamplight, his bare muscular arms held out from his sides. "Nineteen-Tines am I, spirit of the late-spring hunts," he begins, his voice a low growl that thrums through the heart and sets the blood racing. "It is I who chases the running deer, and also I who falls with the arrow through my breast." Indeed, a bloody golden arrow pierces his greenery-covered hunting leathers, deep blood dripping slowly down his muscular form and spotting his burnished-gold caligae.

 Scoured-Shell, Summer Solstice:

The sound of a wave crashing to shore can be heard, and after it recedes, there reclines the form of a mermaid, her sea-green skin and sleek, damp, sky-blue hair bedecked with pearls. She smiles, displaying sharp, pointed teeth behind her perfectly pouty lips, fanning her iridescent blue-scaled tail idly. "I am a being of high summer, called Scoured-Shell, and I am very disappointed that the wheel is turning beyond me!" she declaims, her voice hypnotically mellifluous, her breathing sounding like bubbles underwater. She rests her cheek on her long-nailed hand and twirls her strands of pearls idly, her pure-black eyes surveying each person in turn.

Three-Bristled-Brush, Lughnasadh:

The smell of golden wheat, light ale, and fresh-cut wood fills the air as a short, stocky man with a long red beard fades into view. He is whittling a complex doll; it appears to be a man and a woman, back to back, each holding a dying sapling in their hands. His skin is deep black, and he is bare-chested, wearing a comfortable pair of loose trousers and flats of sunset-gold. "Raise one to the dyin' of th' light, lads an' lassies, because dyin' she is, every day," he rumbles; he sounds like a favorite uncle, a mentor, a beloved employer. "Ol' Three-Bristled-Brush, I am, an' I'm ready to drink an' enjoy th' bounty until the sun falls." Everything about him exudes ease and plenty, and he continually is sheened with a light layer of sweat. 

 Trembling-Silverleaves, Autumn Equinox:

 An aspen-bark white, trembling hand parts a curtain of golden-blonde hair, revealing a narrow, high-cheekboned face with deep violet eyes beneath it. With the sound of dry leaves gusting in a chill wind, the figure steps forward, cloaked in a skirt of yellow leaves that continually swirl about their ankles. Mushrooms form a vest of sorts, highlighting the androgynous figure's impossibly slender torso; birdsong accents their whispery voice. "I am called Trembling-Silverleaves, travellers, and my season grows strong. I am the peace and thought that comes with the darkening year." Indeed, this figure seems the most clear and present out of all of them.

Gravemoss-Harvest, Samhain:

The scent of fresh slaughter sends chills up the spine, even as it is immediately masked by the scent of fire smoke on cold winds, the calls of crows and other hungry things echoing through the air. "Gravemoss-Harvest," intones a low, silky female voice; it is only now you realize she is there, cloaked in swirling black and bedecked with red jewels fashioned to look like autumn gourds. "I am the reminder to stock up for winter lest death find you, even as I am also the spirit of mischief that frolicks in the darkling year." Three shadowy tails creep from beneath her gown, twitching slowly. Her face is obscured behind a red lacquer oni mask, her hands slender and bone-white as they gesture about, chipped black nails at the end of each five-knuckled finger.

Stardew Valley Sebastian

Sebastian is a NPC and one of the marriage hopefuls who live in Stardew Valley. 

He lives in the master's shop with his mother Robin, his stepsister Maru, and his stepfather Demetrius. He tends to feel like the "unfavorite" as a result of how essentially his sister is respected both by his kin and assorted villagers. His living strategy in the storm cellar appears to additionally detach him dismissing the way that it would show up he settles on due there by decision. Post 4: The letter C

Welcome back! It sure wasn't yesterday, how have you been? I'm fine thanks, been a little busy myself and had to put this project on the backburner as you can probably tell. I alluded to being really busy in the last post and that's been pretty much true for all of the past year. Luckily, things are looking a bit better up ahead so I might actually start posting regularly soon!

Much has happened outside of the blog too. I toyed with the idea of moving this beuat over to blogspot (where all the real emo blogs are anyway) when it looked like tumblr was self-destructing for a hot minute. But in the end cooler heads prevailed and it looks like tumblr is just gonna keep existing albeit with less popularity. In the emo world, 125, Rue Montmartre, the first band I covered about a year ago are releasing their discography on vinyl and are now on spotify. All thanks to my blog, I'm sure. Don't be fooled by my modest follower count

I actually have quite a few prestigious readers. Most notably perhaps being Prof. Anders Ahlén, a man important enough to have his own wikipedia page.

C has been the longest letter so far by far clocking in at a mighty 6.56 GB as opposed to the average of 2.8. I've been listening to it in phases with sometimes a month or more in between so it hasn't really been a coherent experience. It has been a real slog though, which is part of why I gave up several times. This has also been a letter with a great number of "famous" emo bands. Because part of the purpose of this listening experience is to experience 90's emo "as it was" rather than colored by nostalgia or what is deemed worthy of attention by the internet discourse I'm disqualifying bands that are prominent in the emo canon from best name, song or image. I will however still do a quick write up on them for those of you not as familiar with emo, chances are I'll reference them in the future so do take notes.

Emo classics

Cap'n Jazz

It's almost impossible to tell the story of 90's emo without Cap'n Jazz. Among their members they have Tim Kinsella, who would later go on to play in Joan of Arc and Owls, his brother Mike Kinsella who would later play in American Football as well as Owls, Their/They're/There and Owen and also Davey von Bohlen who would later play in the Promise ring. When they formed in '89 they where just a bunch teenagers, Mike being just 12. They released their first album 6 years later which goes by the title Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards in the Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We’ve Slipped on, and Egg Shells We’ve Tippy Toed Over, but is simply referred to as Schmap'n Schmazz by fans. Most of the lyrics where supposedly written by Tim one night while high on mushrooms. They have a wonderful surreal dadaist quality to them with lines such as Hey coffee eyes, you've got me coughing up my cookie heart or You are colder than oldness could ever be. The music is chaotic and full of a warm messy energy. I am personally absolutely enamored with their cover of Aha's Take on me which I insist on putting in as many playlists where it makes some sense whatsoever. As you can hear, Tims vocals do absolutely not Morten Harkets heights (not an easy feat in Tims defense) and you can plainly hear a teenagers voice falseto-cracking and it's absolutely amazing somehow.

Cap'n Jazz really hit the spot of this awkward sensitive yet punk energy that from the start was very central to emo. Although Cap'n Jazz are a big helping sillier and more pubertal than, say, Rites of Spring.

One popular quip about the Velvet underground is the following:

The Velvet Underground didn't sell many records, but everyone who bought one went out and started a band.

I suppose Cap'n Jazz is a bit like that for emo although their presence was perhaps felt as strongest around 2010 with bands such as Snowing, Glocca Morra and in particular Algernon Cadwallader aping their style.

Christie Front Drive

I think part of the reason for Cap'n Jazz's status as a cornerstone band stems from their originality. Christine Front Drive is in contrast a very prototypical 90's emo band. They have a sound that borrows heavily from both post-hardcore and indie-rock with the slightly whiny vocals typical for the genre and era. On their song November they sing Still the same // Fucked for what you've done // Still over // Staged over // November's almost done // Still the same which I think is a nice cross section of their lyrics (most of the rest of the song are just variations on the same words with "remember" also thrown into the mix). The overall sound is slow, moody and a bit dreamy, very typical of their brand of emo. As easy as it is to find bands that sound similar to CFD, I dare say that they did it better than most and that this is what has earned them their spot in the emo cannon.

Cursive

Cursive formed in 1995 and has since been together on and off up to the present day, the drive only has music up to 2005 though. This includes their 2003 release the Ugly Organ which was released by Saddle Creek and is the only one I've heard before starting this project. By that point they had already moved away from their emo roots though, and I'm glad to finally have gotten around to their earlier stuff. The Ugly Organ is artsy, catchy and a bit baroque, but also definitely on the outskirts of emo to the point where I'd perhaps describe it as an indie/alternative album if I wasn't talking about them in the context of emo. This doesn't mean that it isn't worth a listen because it absolutely is. Their early stuff is more typical of what the rest of the drive is like with a sound more in the ballpark of CFD but much more punk, with a higher tempo and angrier vocals while still maintaining a somewhat whiny voice, introspective lyrical content and the cold, big guitar sound typical to this branch of emo.

Car vs Driver

So far I've generally picked bands that stand out a bit because in a long stream of relative sameness, that's what you end up paying attention to. Car vs Driver is however not one of theses bands that stand out but rather pretty typical of the emocore sound. They do it pretty well though. They are undeniably punk, but with more introspective lyrics and a slightly melodic edge, which is exactly how emo was first conceived. One some of their tracks like the featured Without A Day day even flirt a bit more with an alt-rock sound but they also have songs that are a lot more hardcore like Livid Step.

When researching them I half expected them to be a pretty substantial band that I had somehow managed to miss, but they're actually very unheard of, something which I consider to be a shame.

I did however find that the drummer of the band has a blogspot at beyondfaliure.blogstopt.com where he catalogs various bands he's been a part of. There is a collection of Car vs Driver flyers as well as two live recordings and this summary he wrote for their discography

Car vs. Driver began when I was 17 years old. By the time we played our final show, I was 19. This band was the music of my life during a period when people usually experience the greatest amount of freedom, which is what I think of whenever I listen to this music now. There were so many new experiences: living on our own, meeting new people, getting a new perspective on life. Our lifestyle in turn gave us a new perspective on expressing music, and we poured all of our energy and emotion into it. Music that now seems a world away – music from a different life. It’s hard to remember that everything about being in a band at that time was simply making a 7”, buying the cheapest van you could find, and touring the country for the summer. There was no infrastructure to build your music around, which also removed its barriers. Instead of running our band like a corporation, we played peoples living rooms and basements, engaged in kickball tournaments, made record covers out of manila envelopes, slept on top of our van, cooked pasta, and played with some of the most amazing bands in the process. Bands that epitomized the time – like Spirit Assembly, Policy of 3, Friction, Current, The Yah Mos, Assfactor 4, Frail, Hoover, Freemasonry, Scout, and Inkwell. The experience we had is something that could never be recreated, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been a part of that moment in time. Christopher Robin

Christopher Robin is a screamo band that go pretty hard. The name is a funny contrast to this and the juxtaposition between childhood nostalgia and angsty screaming works really well.

My favorite picture

Featured is the cover to a demo tape by french screamo band Cather Mathra, which features songs such as Ils M'ont Oubliés (they forgot me) or Leur Révolution (their revolution). You can read more about them on psychoviolence, a blog dedicated to French punk & violence. I think that using a medieval (?) drawing for a cover is pretty cool, especially if you're a french screamo band.

Curiosly they don’t have any music on youtube, you’ll have to check out the drive if you want to listen to them. Tumblr has a limit of 5 embedded videos anyway, so that worked out nicely I suppose.

Number of chickens: 3 Breeds: 1 Barred Rock and 2 Rhode Island Reds Type of feed: Layer Pellets (16%) Cost of feed: $12 for a 50lb bag. I've had my chickens for 1 month and still have a little left in the first bag. Oyster shell costs about $5 a bag and I still have some left in my first bag. So, I'm guessing they're going to cost me between $4 and $5 per month per chicken. Grit is hard to find locally. My local Tractor Supply store has a spot on the shelf for it (under $5), but they never have it. Many people say it's not necessary, but some do. I ordered a bag from McMurray Hatchery just in case. Cost of litter: I have a small 4'x3' coop that my 3 hens stay in during the night. I replace the litter once a week. A $5 bag lasts me 1 month... but now that they've started sleeping in the same spot (and pooping in the same spot) every night, I may just change 1/2 of it each week.... so it would last me a good bit longer. Vaccinations: I haven't done this. If you're buying chicks from a hatchery, it's pretty cheap to do when you order them. Other things: Wormers if necessary. But there are some natural methods that are pretty cheap. Pumpkin seeds and apple cidar vinegar are said to be great wormers. And you don't have to throw away the eggs when you treat them with those (like you do with most chemical wormers). Also, you'll need to purchase a waterer and a feeder. And you'll need a nesting box and some shelter from preditors (coop). I went overboard with my coop. It cost me close to $300 to build and looks like a mini playhouse. My hens have a 4'x8' run during the day. They need at least 10 square feet of outdoor space and a minimum of 4 square feet in the coop. My chickens were between 3 and 4 months old when I got them ($8 each), so I have no idea how much it costs to raise them from "day old" chicks. But I'm guessing it's pretty cheap or else they wouldn't sell "ready to lay" pullets for $10 or less. Edit to add: I just re-read your question and realized I didn't give you a "cost per year". I'm estimating mine will cost about $200 per year (less than $70 per chicken) for everything (food, litter, occasional wormings, etc). But I'm hoping to get about 60 dozen eggs a year, too. Will you have an adult with each group of children? Hopefully so, and hopefully that adult will know what not to touch. Obviously you don't want to mess with poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac (if you have it there- it does have some ranges in PA), and you don't want the kids to bother any mushrooms or stinging or biting insects. When you say "younger" children, how young? Eight? Ten? So long as the age is somewhere between eight and thirteen, you can get a little specific. If they're younger than that, you'll want to be more general. Just like in the schools, you have to make the activity age-appropriate and ability-appropriate. As such, I'd suggest at least THREE sets of items. First, go with a very broad, simple list for the youngest children. Bird, pinecone, leaf, stick, etc. The adult with them should probably bring along a digital camera to help the kids. If you want to start differentiating between, say, pine needles and oak leaves, that would be a start. It could be educational that way. Keep the littlest kids away from any creepy crawlies, because either they could freak out, or get bitten or stung. Also, some basic directions on where and how to find certain things would be good. You might even "plant" some items, possibly marked with numbers or names on stakes. For the middle ability group, you could be more specific. Oak leaves, maple leaves, bay leaves, whatever you happen to have. Show them examples of each one. Frogs, toads, salamanders, lizards, again with examples shown prior to the trip. Again, the adult that is with them should have a camera to take photos of the animals. You could even specify specific birds that they might see, or maybe suggest they bring back a feather if they find one. With the most advanced group, if they are advanced enough, you can consider making a booklet with photos of things they need to find. Don't show them in advance, or tell them anything particular. Let them find the stuff themselves. With this, you could even be REALLY specific, and require something besides just a photo or a sample... such as that they give you information about whatever it is. In other words, they could find pine needles, and you could have a "quiz" in the papers you give them, asking if a pine tree is an evergreen or deciduous, conifer or angiosperm, etc. Basically, you need to narrow down the age ranges you'll have, find out what ability level each range has, and tailor the scavenger hunt to their age and ability. That's what I did for some of my students last year- two levels of scavenger hunt to fit two different groups of students. It might take a little longer for you to do it, but it will be more rewarding to you and to the kids, especially those who are at higher levels... What type of bedding are you using? Even though pine or cedar bedding is not reccomended, it is effective at repelling insects due to the fragrent oils in the shavings. But if you are using paper bedding ( care fresh) straw/hay or corncob then its a possibility a fly could have laid eggs. But a through cleaning will eliminate the eggs

Even though I am blind to what the plot of the story is and who and what the characters are and can become the beginning practically sells itself in a way. It's quick and informative, not boring and drawn out which is a good leg to start on when writing that first crucial paragraph to your novel. Most author's struggle at this point, they prefer to start somewhere in the middle of the novel, where the true nature of the story they are trying to tell is ready to form, rather than delving in at the start where all the introductions and build-up is crafted. It flows nicely, not to complex but not to simple, a good balance for readers of varying age groups. In honesty I wouldn't pick up a novel that was based around this on the shelf, but I certainly did enjoy reading those two paragraphs and would indeed, if stumbled upon this, continue to read further. Returning to not knowing the plot and what the story is about it's hard to come up with any names. When your about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the story, the name will most likely present itself in some form or other. In the end I am sure you will have a very nice manuscript in your hands.
