Transit Talk Thursday

Transit Talk Thursday: This week I want to talk about the Jacksonville Skyway, as I was talking about the failure of the Jacksonville Skyway to someone I know who lives in the area a few days ago, and it got me thinking about the subject in general. I've had a bit of a chip on my shoulder in regards to people movers and PRT systems, but I've never really understood why until I began looking a bit into the Jacksonville Skyway inevitably shuttering its doors. I think it's a good example of what not to do in regards to building a strong rail-based transit system in a city, hence why this week's post will be dissecting it.

For the uninitiated, the Jacksonville Skyway was this weird people mover that operates in the city of Jacksonville, Florida, here in the United States. It was opened in 1989 to address issues regarding traffic and congestion in Jacksonville, using fully automated trains that run on an elevated monorail track. Jacksonville initially expected it to get about 100,000 monthly riders, unfortunately, it did not get nearly that amount, and many in and out of Jacksonville wrote it off as a joke of a system. Nowadays, the system is free to ride, but Jacksonville is trying to get rid of it in favor of pod cars instead, which will inevitably be even worse than this. Hey, maybe I could rip into it in a future post. Who knows.

Okay, so now that we know what the Skyway is, what are the problems with it?

Let's start off with the most obvious, being the fact that it's a monorail. I'm not going to get into every single detail as to why monorails suck for public transit as Train of Thought has already made an excellent video on it here but the key point I want to focus on is the cars themselves. The Skyway trains have a very low capacity relative to regular trainsets, so the amount of people that can get use out of this relative to a regular rapid rail line is going to be substantially less.

But wait, it gets worse.

With most regular train lines, you are usually able to couple more trainsets together to increase capacity when needed. While the Skyway sets can do this, their low individual capacity means a traditional trainset will always outpace it for capacity. Either way you chop it, the Skyway was never going to get more riders than a regular rapid rail line, let alone 100,000 monthly riders. It was never going to happen as a result of its fundamental design.

These last two issues I don't have as much to talk about, as the Skyway isn't as bad here, but they are still worth mentioning.

The next issue the Skyway suffers from is a lackluster schedule. Schedules are the lifeblood of good transit, as good schedules make sure people can actually use said transit. The Skyway schedule is flawed, to say the least. The Skyway will only run between 6 A.M. to 9 P.M., and on weekdays only. On-peak is defined as between 6-9 A.M. and 4-7 P.M., with trains arriving 4 minutes. For off-peak, this is every 8 minutes. This is okay for the most parts, but what sours things is no late night service and, especially, no service on weekends. Good transit should be able to serve people at nearly anytime, not just 9-5 commuters on weekdays. I don't expect transit to run 24/7 nonstop, as that's incredibly unrealistic, but transit shouldn't be delegated as something you only use when going to work. It should be an option 99% of the time when you have to travel somewhere within a city.

The last issue is the Skyway really deserves better land use. This is moreso an issue with United States cities in general, but in regards to transit it's much more important. The main thing that transit is intended to do is to bring people to places worth going to, be it their homes, work, a place to relax, a place to shop, etc. This is all thrown out the window if transit is subservient to the automobile, in which the only thing that it will bring people to is cars in a parking lot. This is fine if you do own a car at said station, but if you don't, then what's the point? For this, the Skyway is alright as it is somewhat connected to other services and some businesses, but it still suffers from having way too much parking at stations.

And unfortunately, even if you were to theoretically fix all three of these issues, congratulations! You just invented a regular rapid transit line! What even was the point of that monorail?

So, conclusion time?

If there's anything to learn from the Jacksonville Skyway, it's that, unfortunately, not all transit is created equal. From it's inception, the Skyway was screwed due to its nonstandard design in regards to its rolling stock, and no amount of good schedules nor transit oriented development (not that the Skyway got either) was going to save it. If any cities are going to want to improve themselves via rail-based transit, they would be wise to take a lesson from the Jacksonville Skyway and learn that transit existing by itself isn't enough. It needs to be the right transit for a city and it needs the city's love and care to truly flourish and benefit the people.

Why the hell did they think I was a troll?? Was that a democrat or republican, Because I can't tell but it could very well be either because both sides have some crazy fucking people. I don't even think what I want is that insane, But then again I haven't posted here since my mother finally stopped basically feeding me 24/7 insane propaganda like 'snake people' and shit.

I'm not even against abortion 100%, I just don't think the procedure should be a fucking thing outside of medical reasons!!! Medical reasons being the mother would die from the birth and a pill wouldn't take care of it. Abortion pills work for 15 weeks, AKA 3.5 fucking months!! Thats enough, Isn't it?? I can understand case by case using the procedure if pills aren't working, But gosh!

I'm not giving cops money and cheering them on in the streets, But I'm also not gonna tell them to fucking die!! Saying all cops are bad because there are a few that's corrupted is crazy! I've had cops save my life, I've had them traumatize me as well. Yes, Some are absolutely fucking insane and not ready to be a cop! We don't need to abolish police, (though I would REALLY prefer the alternative of ELECTING A SHERRIF and letting them have a DEPUTY and that be it, The Deputy giving others training to be public servant ect ect or whatever happens with deputies) We just need to give all police officers the same training military gets so they don't accidentally shoot, So they're ready for situations that would require being calm even if they're at gunpoint!! Give them a fucking mental evaluation!!

And don't get me fucking STARTED on school shootings. It could ALL be PREVENTED by giving teachers guns inside of a safe, In every classroom. Mental evaluations every WEEK for the teachers. School shootings are so common now, But when my dad was a kid they had shit like archery practice and he told me that in his entire time there no accidents happened!!! It got banned after some parents complained it 'could be dangerous.' Schools need way more fucking funding and put TRUSTED people as teachers. We need to give our schools the help we can since the fucking government isnt.

And I'm gay, You all know my fucking stance on that. I think being trans is a REAL thing that happens! I think some people would GENUINELY be happier as the other gender, But I think letting children, Who're EASILY INFLUENCED by EVERYTHING!!! I thought I was a fucking zombie because I loved zombie movies!! If I could've chosen I would've LOVED to be PERMANENTLY DISFIGURED to LOOK LIKE A ZOMBIE!! And I would've fucking regretted it later. My entire life I've gone by so many different names. 'Zack' in kindergarten through 2nd grade, And then in 3rd I tried to get everyone to call me 'Rose' And then, In 7th grade, For a while, I used my real name. Then in 9th I told people I was trans and to call me Mark. It's since been changed again, But I don't wanna give out my age, Grade or new name people could identify me irl with. I am biologically a woman (and don't plan on changing that, I just like guy names) and so many times in the past I would have JUMPED at the chance to do hormone therapy, WHICH MULTIPLE PEOPLE WHO'VE GONE ON SAY IS NOT REVERSABLE LIKE THEY SAY, Or to completely transition. The reason so many trans people kill themselves isn't from bullying, It's because so many people make a mistake and rush to cut it off or stitch it on and then realize they'll never be the same, Or they realize that it hurts horribly every day and theres no going back to how they used to be, Or they realize they weren't trans in the first place. Some people just like people someone else online, Being different characters, Or like being boys online and a girl in real life. That isn't them being trans, Its just liking a persona. As a Traditional NeoWiccan, I maintain a distinguishment between Altars and Shrines, and I don't combine the two. I also don't keep my Altar out and up all the time, either.

Altars are the central part of a sacred working space for us. They hold the tools, supplies, and icons- etc- that we need in order to perform our rituals, and which are often placed on our Altars in a specific pattern for our tradition. For that reason, the most important items used during our rituals are often stored until we actually need to do the kind of work that even necessitates a Circle in the first place.

Of course, however, this isn't particularly common today; with the rise of Eclectic NeoPaganism, Altars and Shrines have been combined into one entity and are often left out 24 / 7 / 365. And not all NeoWiccans- or even Traditional or Transitional Wiccans- have always (or ever) maintained this distinction. It all depends on the tradition ... One day, I actually hope not to have to, either.

I hope to some day have a home with enough space that I can set up a permanent Temple that I can simply step into as needed or desired- instead of having to constantly hunt down safe public spaces to hold rituals, and always being disappointed (especially by interruptions). Or, far more often, finding my most common safe public spaces, which I should have access to year round, closed down for an entire season because of Christian celebrations forced on a public that may or may not actually entirely agree with or celebrate them.

It's exhausting, and it's frustrating. Especially when there's other factors compounding the issue at home already. But until that day eventually comes? I follow the base edicts of my tradition as I can and make do.

Are you aware you're a murderer?

So I work classified security at a major defense contractor company that shall not be named. I repeat, the company works for government projects which are mostly classified secret and even top secret. So this is not a public-facing thing.

I do not work directly for this company, but a subcontractor hired by the company to handle physical security 24/7. But I do work only at this company location, as I have the proper clearance and the training to do so.

People from the public cannot just wander in without an approved visit request, which is a whole big process. You need a background check just to be authorized to scrub the toilets here. The door won't even open for you if you don't have one of our specially coded badges.

And if you call, you'd better know the exact information of the specific individual you are trying to reach, because we won't help you find someone, and we won't transfer your call to that person, we won't even tell you if they work here at all. We'll give them your information so they can decide if they want to talk to you - and often they don't.

Unfortunately, there isn't a receptionist desk for calls to go to, so all calls to the building instead go directly to the security desk. This leads to a weird situation where if anyone Google's the company's contact number, their call goes to my security desk.

My legitimate my calls are either the security alarm monitoring company telling me a sensor has gone off, an employee needing assistance, or someone trying to get ahold of a certain employee. Other calls like people seeking career information, employment verification, or plain wrong numbers. The latter category are not my job to deal with, but as a courtesy I try to direct them to the appropriate party as best I can while trying to finish the call as fast as possible. I have to keep the line clear for the aforementioned alarm calls.

I will clarify that my job is NOT customer service. Well, it is, but my customer is the company itself, not members of the public.

So anyway.

*Ring ring*

I answer the phone and say "Company X, this is Officer Maskydoo speaking. How can I help you?

The guy on the other side says to me "Am I speaking to a company X employee, or a third party call center?" which is a new one to me.

"Neither, you've reached the security desk. I can-"

He immediately launches into a bit of a spiel "I just want to know when your company plans to transition to biomed technologies bla bla bla" and then he rattles off a bunch of stuff the company is currently involved in, like missile defense, etc. Now, I thought maybe he was someone trying to angle for a job or internship or something. Sometimes people are so eager to get some kind of foot in the door that they'll just try to flex everything they know on whoever they can, even though this company does not do any career support over the phone (and certainly not the security phone.)

As this man never seemed to take a break to breathe, I eventually just cut him off. "The security desk does not have that information, sir. If you're looking for information, I suggest the company website. Now, if you are trying to reach a point of contact here, I can direct your call if you can provide me a name."

Then he threw me a weird curve ball I wasn't expecting.

"You know that by working there, you're complicit in murder." He seemed like he was going to go on more, but I had enough.

I interrupted him before he could continue, and said in my most pleasant tone

"I don't give a sh*t."

There was a moment of blissful silence on the other end, and I did not wait for a recovery." Have a nice day. Goodbye." And I hung up.

Now, was my language nice? Well, no. Perhaps not. But, as my quote goes, I don't give a sh*t.

See, I work classified security. Not the mall. My job is to stop the public from having access to the building or contact with the people inside. I screen calls. I never even had to take his call in the first place, and only answered as a courtesy. I don't owe anyone help who does not have legitimate business, and I certainly don't owe anyone a debate. I'm sure not interested in talking to some nutter.

He called back immediately. The caller ID only said Wireless Caller (no name) but did display the phone number. It wasn't even from our state. No doubt the guy wanted to speak to my manager. I wouldn't have transferred him to my manager, even if he was actually in that day. Part of my job is actually to stop bad calls from getting through to anyone at all, not to pass them off to someone else. So I rejected the call.

I've dealt with angry people demanding my manger before, often because they're convinced they've actually dialed Walmart and I'm just lying that it's a wrong number, for some reason. But this guy actually knew he was calling company X, so I can't imagine why he'd expect the 'I want to speak to your manger' routine to work with us murderers like this is F-ing Dairy Queen.

You'd think that would be the end of it, but no. He called back again. And again. And again. I rejected every call. This went on for several minutes without this smooth brained individual getting the hint. If I didn't answer the last dozen times, why would I now?

A random employee wandered by, and just making conversation, I told the employee what was going on, all the while rejecting still more calls form the same guy.

Then the employee got a grin on his face and deiced it would be fun to pretend to by my manager. I coached him how to answer like a guard, and he did so.

I don't know what the guy on the other end said, but the employee responded "Well isn't that nice. Listen here, your information has been reported, and law enforcement is on their way to you as we speak!" and hung up again.

I am still laughing whenever I think of it. Obviously, what the employee said is not true in any way. We don't have that kind of power. We just thought it was fun to mess with the guy a bit.

We were hoping that would scare the guy to quit calling, but no such luck. More calls kept coming through, and even did interfere with a legitimate call from our alarm company (the alarm company eventually called us on our secondary line. Luckily, it was just a communications check.)

Even though I was not answering these calls, the distraction of having to check and manually reject each call was getting to be a pain in the A, not to mention really cutting into my murder quota for the day. Eventually, a PSR and the FSO got involved. When I told them what was up, including what I said, they had a good laugh and the FSO got to work seeing if they could get the phone number blocked.

In all, the man called me 53 times in the span of about 20 minutes. I think he needs a hobby.

I still don't know what exactly he expected to accomplish. Was I supposed to say "WOW! I never knew that! Thank you, random stranger, for informing me that the defense company I work for is indeed a defense company. I'll just quit my job right this second and go be homeless and live off pinecones." My guess is he was trying to get some kind of story where 'totally owns' some jackbooted imperialist goon. I expect to find this guy's tale on some little blog somewhere or possibly even a recording on tic-tok.

As it is, several employees have taken to cheerfully greet each other with "hey, what's up, murderer?" as they pass in the halls. Just in case anyone was curios how much impact this concerned citizen's call on one of the biggest aerospace companies in the world.

Edit: I added a few clarifications, mostly in case anyone needs info on security as it implies to businesses that handle classified information.

Powerpuff Girls Headcanon:

The girls get older and realize that none of the people that they've fought are the real monsters the way the mayor is.

I mean, what kind of mayor would allow 3 kindergarteners to fight his battles for him? Unless he didn't care about them the same way he didn't care about the people they fought. After all, they're not human either.

Let's take Fuzzy Lumpkins for instance. The girls come to realize that he was only protecting his space. The mayor was encroaching on his territory through his deforestation efforts to expand Townsville. How else was he supposed to defend himself if not gaining notoriety?

The Gangrene Gang? Grew up in a poor part of the city and were exposed to dangerous chemicals. We've seen how careless the mayor can be. Where else would he dump the remains of the monsters from Monster Island? And with their altered DNA came health issues. That forced them to steal just to pay for their hospital bills.

HIM? Definitely Trans. Denied the right to transition and was forced to take street hormones that altered not only the shape of their body but the color of their skin.

And I 100% feel like Ms. Sara Bellum was the brains behind all of it. Was drugging the mayor through pickles and influencing all of the decisions he made. It was the only way that a woman without a face could gain power.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I am not watching any movie or show about black pain. I don't need to experience that trauma anymore than I already have.

Some of those stories may be important. Some of them are torture porn. And some of them are specifically made for white people to feel sympathy for black people.

I don't need stories about us dying. I don't need stories about slavery. I don't need a series about black people experiencing multiple traumas through a horror lenses.

If y'all wanna watch it, that's fine. But I'm not watching anything that contributes to the pain that our community feels on a daily basis. I don't need to see a dramatized version of our reality.

I'm good.

I'm over WOC stanning these basic ass white male celebrities. They're not cute enough to say half the things they do. They don't date WOC publicly. The definitely don't date us in movies/tv. What have they done to deserve the amount of thirst that they get?

99% of them don't stand up for us or our rights. They don't care about us. But day in and day out I see new reasons that have been created to love on and support them and their work.

All because they have a cute dog and some of y'all have pics saved of their dick prints and their buzz cut doesn't mean they deserve our time or energy. Because they definitely won't give their energy or time to us.

1. Can't Take That Away (Steven Salvatore)

Someone: haha Adrien said he was playing a character as Chat noir! Take that people who interpreted it differently!

(But for real I always figured Adrien's 'true self' was somewhere in the middle; he can be goofy, but also sincere, and Chat noir allows him to be emotional and sociable in a way that he probably doesn't feel comfortable with as himself, at least around other people. F'ex, needing to be alone to cry. And clearly his dad has expected a lot from his conduct in the past, so his house isn't somewhere he can be himself; at school, he had friends and gets along with his classmates and has improved at socializing, but we can't forget that the boy has kind of an inferiority complex and doesn't think of himself as anything special. He also probably had a hard time transitioning to public school when he was finally allowed to go. So no--obviously he's not like, a wisecracking pun machine 24/7 in his heart, but the mask does give him some freedom of expression that he may not have as the face of his father's brand, and that expression is certainly exaggerated, but not entirely separate from him. Chat Noir is not a separate character. The themes of Chat Noir = freedom for Adrien are right there.

Anyway, fuck you, I have an English degree and spent four years of university doing nothing but analyze media, eat my ass)
