Do you like anime?

Why yes anon, I do!

Though it's been a while since I've watched any. I think most of the anime I've seen is older stuff... because I am old. I know there are some really popular things that have come out in the last several years that I just haven't had a chance to watch. For instance, I have watched Sailor Moon and Ghost in the Shell but I have not watched Mob Psycho 100 which I only know about because of the sexyman contest lol. There were so many memes. I think the most recent thing I've watched is Little Witch Academia, which I loved. And of course I've seen most of the Studio Ghibli movies, some of them multiple times. I also went through a manga phase where I read a lot of that, but then never watched the anime that was made from it. Like I read the entire Fruits Basket manga but I've never watched the anime. Same with Death Note. But Haibane Renmei is probably still my favorite anime... I still have all the DVDs in a box somewhere.

I also tend to prefer anime that's kinda short? Like some of these that are based on manga are based on a manga that has a hundred volumes, so the anime also just goes on forever? I get bored if we're dealing with too many seasons lol. This is the case for all shows, though, it's not specific to anime. I'm notorious for watching half the seasons and leaving the rest forever.

But I do really enjoy anime, so if anybody has some recommendations, feel free to send them to me! Especially anything newer, I know I'm behind the times on anime in general.

There's a loose half circle of boys all older than Pony by at least a year or two blockin' his only exit- across the lot, over the fence, 'n two blocks home. Their ring leader, some snot-nosed soc who'd had it out for Pony since the moment they laid eyes on each other, jostles one of his posse 'n cackles an ear splittin' laugh.

"God," Pony runs a hand under his nose, scowls when it comes away stained red. "I'd thought the circus had rolled outta town. Someone must have told me wrong considerin' all the clowns are right here in front of me."

The boy stops hootin' 'n glares down at Pony, eyes darkenin'. "You fuckin' asked for it now, Curtis." He gives him another kick in the ribs that has Pony chokin'. He drops down to meet Pony's eyes, crouchin' close. "I was wrong. You ain't gonna go home 'n cry to mama. 'Cause you ain't got one. Shame. Though she wouldn't much like you fightin', would she? God, disapointin'."

Pony grins, blood on his teeth, 'n spits in his face. "Don't worry about my ma. I got two older brothers 'n you know what? It's damn fine with them." 'N Pony's laughter melts right into the sound the boy's nose makes as it cracks under his fist.

*sighing* i fear all if this can be explained by the fact that they were just, well, 14 years old. can we put headcanons down and circle back to the fact that they’re like, early teens. can we hold hands and remember that the character being a child explains a whole lot. they’re not evil they’re just 15 and make some fascinating choices with their free will

people who genuinely think a 16 year old wei wuxian was at fault for the wens invading lotus pier are wrong and insane on many levels but I also think it shows a spectacular lack of real world political literacy - the invading army that conquered and slaughtered all of the other cultivation sects did not come for yunmeng because a teenage boy was mouthy, that's an excuse, it's a thing to point to and go awe, if only this minor thing hadn't happened, we wouldn't have to kill you, really it's your fault when you think about it :( they didn't need a reason to burn the cloud recesses, or sack qinghe, so why would the actions of wei wuxian who, again, was at the ripe age of 16, mean anything in terms of who the wen sect did or did not subjugate? come on now

Again the sickness speaking but here's something that has been going through my mind since forever:

I feel like a good way to mitigate a lot of discontent with the doa arc ending and in general the whole Dazai-being-flawless issue bsd has going on is by comparing bsd to Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Please bear with me for two minutes.

When Sherlock Holmes was being published, people were intrigued and enamoured by Holmes' brilliant and charming, crimes-solving figure. People read the stories for the pure joy of being left gaping at his superhuman wits again and again; they didn't want to see him fail, they wanted to be shocked and amazed by his genius. When Holmes died and then came back, nobody lamented it being unrealistic, because realism was not what people were reading the books for! They were reading to be impressed, to cheer for the hero and then take satisfaction in seeing him turn out victorious. That's the author-reader deal that was made there: to impress and to enjoy being impressed.

As of recently I feel like we've been asking from bsd something it never promised us in the first place. Maybe it's just not that kind of series! Maybe it's more about surprising the reader with how the hero is going to make it and less about highlighting his flaws and insecurities. And like, that's okay! That's why Dazai getting away with it isn't it him getting away with it “again”, it's just how bsd is; in a way, it's what makes bsd bsd.

I think it really clicked with me like it never did before when I watched the last episode of season 5; because the arc ending felt so shocking and unpredictable, very deus-ex-machina trope, a little underwhelming in its lowering the stakes that were there the whole time, and yet so extremely on brand with bsd, I didn't even have it in me to be disappointed. It was so similar to the Guild's arc ending and even more to the Cannibalism arc ending, and maybe it really is just a pattern, maybe it really is what bsd aspires to be, and that's okay too.

Also, I can't stretch this enough: if it's not your cup of tea, that's fine. I can't say it's mine either. But I feel like criticizing bsd now for how it's always been falls quite short, because it really feels like demanding from it what it never promised to deliver in the first place. That's just as far as my current perception of the series goes, though, so feel free to disagree with me on this.

wont know for sure that pauline is the only odyssey nod in mario kart world until the direct and/or actual release of the game but it's kinda funny to me that it's clearly taking a few points most recently relevant to odyssey to build on (the outfits, the importance of exploration, the general theming of travel and trying to ground the mario world in a more plausible and immersive way) and yet i havent seen hide nor hair of any characters or species or objects or locations introduced after like mario galaxy

The way you had to be there to see in real time how a stream of Comic Con and the rest of the internet went crazy over that ( both pro and against it. ) Really changed the cinematic landscape so hard marvel had to pivot and make Civil War. ( You can fact checkk the timing of this of course but its still true that they pivoted to Civil War because BvS had them shaking in their boots and WB got scared off their billion dollar franchise for not making that billion in TWO movies which made 600million and 800million respectively. )

man. whenever i see someone discussing it/talking about liking it i feel myself Wanting to like. respect? extreme horror as a genre. more than i do. and i think my problem boils down to like. some of the places these things go.. you need to be a damn good writer, and you kinda need to make it have a Point or a Reason at least somewhat. you gotta be able to suspend your disbelief. that doesn't go any different for any flavor of horror than any other type of nonfiction writing tbh and in my opinion is generally harder to pull off. what happens does, in context, need to at least kinda sorta make a little bit of sense in some way and not be happening Just Because. and because of the rarity and stigma of extreme horror its less likely to qualify well for either of the above and just ends up attracting people who want to write some Really out there shit and get upset when they get justified critique from readers (usually people who bought their book and Enjoy extreme horror!) and always want to couch it like they're being oppressed for Writing which is a super disingenuous way to put it
