Collecting some thoughts on veilguard cause tbh I really don’t know how to feel lmao so. Unstructured ramble time

I’ve watched the trailer and the demo and I feel very. Idk? Still ‘wait and see’ mode for me. It’s been 10 years. Inquisition imo was the weakest of the 3. And while I have kind of moved on from DA there is a part of me that wants this to just blow everything out of the water and be amazing. I’m just not sure if that’s what I think will happen. Right now, I just think it doesn’t feel dragon age-y enough (in terms of what I, personally, consider the defining traits of the series) but I don’t want to jump to conclusions with so little information

The trailer was. Fine. Vibes were a little off but given its Varric narrating, it makes sense (also. Unpopular opinion lmao. I love Varric but I don’t think he should be a companion again. If there’s a carry over companion, it should have been Dorian. And tbh he could still be there, considering they said 7 companions but Varric is not included in that. So did they mean 7 *new* companions and maybe a few others? Advisors again maybe? Idk. Maybe Varric is a temporary companion, but I don’t think he should be there except maybe as a cameo. Scout Harding is an unexpected but fine carry over though). I don’t really have an opinion yet on the companions themselves cause there’s just. Nothing to base an opinion on other than the character designs

Gameplay demo shows that they’re definitely going very Inquisition-y. As in, continuing further down the path it started. Which isn’t unexpected, but is a bit disappointing, though not necessarily a dealbreaker as of yet. It’s probably smart tbh to go more in an action rpg direction than back to the crpg roots given it’s going to be compared to bg3 no matter what they do - better to differentiate as much as possible. Though I don’t think that’s why they did it, probably more a happy accident. I just. Idk, I found inquisitions combat a bit boring and I haven’t been impressed by what I’ve seen yet. But a 20 minute demo is probably not enough to really form an opinion

I feel like you can still see the echoes of this being a live service game at one point too. Healing potions coming from pots found in the environment (I never got over healing spells being cut btw lmao, bring back spirit healers already), the “ability wheel” (unsure about that too, given it sounds like we can’t control companion characters anymore? Kinda really don’t like that :/), stuff like that. I still feel like DA2 combat was the perfect balance between fluidity and strategy but it is what it is. It performed badly, so they’ve disregarded it wholesale rather than consider that some aspects of it may still be worth exploring. It sucks, but that’s capitalism I guess

As for all the other little things, idk, I really am not sure what to think yet lmao. Some sound good. Some less good (why only 2 companions, I don’t like that at all - also weird that the demo shows you won’t have a tank for the initial bit of the game. That’s a weird choice). Nothing to make me go aaaaaa either positively or negatively yet. I don’t even know what to say. My feelings are just so complicated about it, but also kinda empty at the same time. Like. It’s a bit of kombucha girl meme but also muted? I would like to feel just. More about it. But I don’t yet. I’m too unsure. Not quite numb, but almost tbh

At this stage, I feel like I’m gonna wait till it comes out and see what happens. No pre-ordering until I get a better idea. It’s like. With origins, I’ve played it a lot. DA2, even more - countless times lmao. Inquisition though, I played 2.5 times immediately after release and have tried to play it multiple times since but. I only ever get 10-20 hours in before I get bored and can’t make myself continue. I’ve tried many, many times and idk why but I just can’t do it. I never even played any of the DLC, so like. I kinda need to do that first if I’m gonna play veilguard but I have never succeeded before so idk how I will now lmao. But I feel like at least trespasser is necessary and I have genuinely never played it. And I gotta play the rest of the game first to get there and I genuinely don’t know if I can sksksjs

And with that in mind like. If inquisition is that unappealing to me, a game that feels very inquisition-y, potentially leaning even more into the stuff I didn’t like about it, is. Definitely not what I was hoping for. It’s still possible it’s leagues better than inquisition and actually playing it will be a great experience. But right now I just don’t know. I probably won’t be able form any kind of opinion until it comes out and I start getting info from trusted folks that I know have good DA opinions lmao

So i was literally taking notes while watching the new first epidodes because like aaaa all the little moments!!!

Ok weird opinion of mine I guess idk how to start posts aaaa

I think Simon’s “barbarian” design really works story and character wise.

Yeah, it’s silly and absolutely not historically accurate whatsoever, but it kinda makes sense in a certain weird way.

We know from Lament of Innocence and Dracula’s Curse that the Belmont family is generally on rough terms with the public. Leon gets his title taken away and, even though he gets his sword back at the end of the whole Walter situation as confirmed by how Belmonts onward have that sword, he’s still generally kinda shunned for going against the church’s wishes and the tail end of the crusades happening at the time. And Trevor is straight up banished from the country for fear of his strength. He’s much isolated from other people off in the house in the woods until he’s called to help fight against Dracula and gets some friends on the way.

And this kinda sets up the situation that the family was living in during Christopher’s time. The Belmonts are social outcasts; their existence is acknowledged, but they’re not really associated with or thought of very highly at this point. So, it wouldn’t be unlikely that they just wouldn’t really care for or be caught up with social expectations like fashion. When people are going to be wary of you regardless of what you do, why not dress however you want? Especially if you know no one’s going to do anything about it! Especially if it’s practical; the longer, looser sleeves and pant legs of the time would be restrictive in a combat/acrobatic context. So Christopher probably just wore whatever he wanted, and to be fair he doesn’t really seem to interact with anyone besides family very much.

First I wanna mention that I am completely aware that Simon was designed way before any of these other characters. But these characters are chronologically before him and can explain where he gets these design choices from in universe.

So, what about Simon then? Well, Simon has a lot of themes of wanting to be like his ancestors. Christopher is directly mentioned as someone he wonders he’ll ever compare to. Judgment shows him looking up to Trevor as well, and even though that game is of interesting canon status lol, it’s an example of that character element being used again. And this is reflected in his barbarian designs! The cape he wears in the manual drawings resembles the cape Trevor throws off in the opening of CV3. The general light armor and skimpy clothing is reflective of both some of Christopher and Trevor’s designs. The metal armor in Simon’s Quest being reminiscent in shape to Trevor’s on the CV3 box art. It just makes sense that Simon would be trying his damnedest to emulate the guys he’s been looking up and comparing himself to his whole life.

And the sudden transition from the barbarian look the family had for years to the more with the times fashion that Juste has makes a lot of sense considering Juste grew up in a time when the family was highly respected and in the middle of town, somewhere where keeping social expectations and appearances would be expected of him.

Idk if any of this makes sense, but aaaaaa random stream of an idea I guess. I like Simon getting to being weird and out of place for his time period and country lol. Also I’m not saying that other designs are bad!!! I like all of Simon’s game designs tbh, Ayami’s is really cool too and works for some of these points cause it’s also kinda barbarian esque but just in black and red, I’ve cosplayed it before lol. Yeah idk that’s it and I am sleepy goodnight—

This is probably an old topic this point but im thinking about it and feel violent to whatever lol

I’m glad that they remade Crisis Core so that new fans or people who never played the original CC got to experience it with fresh paint. But MY GOD there are a couple gripes i have with Reunion which have mounted a bit more with Ever Crisis.

1. Personal Gripe. Idk if everyone has this issue or if the game has been updated to include this or not since but when i was playing, I had to stop at multiple points and take a break because motion blur makes me genuinely nauseous. And at the time, there was no way that i could find to turn it off. I tried modding it out myself and it didn’t work. I want to 100% the missions but i don’t know if i can because after 10 minutes, I feel like death. But i like the combat system better than the og so hhhhh idk

2. This is not a criticism of the voice actors at all. I’ve gotten used to the voices and I genuinely believe they are doing wonderfully as the characters now. My criticism is at the directors of the english dub of Reunion. The original Crisis Core’s english script can already feel clunky at times. The writing and story as a whole was clunky to begin with. But it really feels like the english voice directors sometimes gave the worst directions and said “Yes! Thats the one!” to the worst takes that sucked any life and personality the OG game cast had given those same lines.

3. I love the shiny, new graphics and animations. And i think there are a few new missions and some quality of life things and it being retranslated. Other than that, i don’t think there is anything new at all. I am certain Square knows that Crisis Core’s story is clunky, sometimes cheesy, probably rushed, and not well written at times. And they did NOTHING to fix it. They didn’t add a couple new chapters to clear anything up. They didn’t add any new dialogue or something to make the relationship and dynamic of the First trio more clear. They didn’t clean up the writing of Sephiroth’s downfall into madness. For the love of everything they could’ve done some justice to a character based off a real person at least in looks and cleaned Genesis’s story and writing. No. Instead…

4. IT LOOKS LIKE THEY’RE PUTTING ALL THAT CHARACTERIZATION AND CHARACTER DYNAMIC AND CLEAN UP IN THE FUCKING GACHA GAME THAT THEY UPDATE SO GOD DAMN INCONSISTENTLY IT MAKES ME WONDER IF THERE’S LIKE 2 PEOPLE WORKING ON EVER CRISIS. ARE THE PEOPLE AT SQUARE OKAY??? IDK BUT AAAAAA I HATE WHEN COMPANIES DO THIIIIIIS

ESSENTIALS

05 - What do they specialize in within their class?

Rift Mage! I did play around with the other two in game, but character-wise they didn't work for Eurydice. She has a personal thing with against necromancy (particularly the idea of raising a corpse from its resting place to do one's bidding) and while Knight Enchanter's cool, it ultimately doesn't fit her fighting style (favors ranged over close combat). Aside from all that, Eurydice has been studying the mark and the rifts since she woke up to it cut into her hand. Logically, it only makes sense that she would further that study with the help of 'Your Trainer' and Solas. Even if she didn't have the mark, Eurydice curiosity over the rifts alone would have lead her to being a Rift Mage. They are just random rips time and space that is pouring the Fade into their planet--if she can't at least play around with it, she can use it to her advantage. And being able to rain down meteors is pretty hot, neither of us can not lie.

06 - Do they have a preferred weapon they always use?

Oh, you know, that's a good question because she tends to switch between weapons? At least, in my head, Eurydice is primarily a staff user but she has a tendency to dig her staff into the ground and use it as a beacon or point of focus while she uses her hands (think like a lightening rod). Eurydice has a wild fighting style; she uses her staff more of an extension of her magic but for the most part, she'll attack from a distance, using heavy-handed spells like the Static Cage or Veilstrike to her advantage. If she's risking someone getting close, she turns her lightening magic into a whip that she uses to drag people towards her. She has a tendency to skitter out of the way if people do get close and people have noted that she mirrors a stag or halla when she does so. I did have an idea a while back of her being a spellbook user and that she outfitted her personal tome to have spikes on the spine so when people get too close, she can slam it down on them. Whether she actually does that in battle, I don't know, but is an hilarious image. That all said, she also keeps a knife one of her brothers made her before she left for the Conclave. So that might be her actual preferred weapon--it certainly is the one she has used to gut people who corner her in battle (and she has threaten several people with it on occasion);

07 - How do they dress in their downtime, while fighting, in formal settings, etc.?

Okay, so I fully admit, if Eurydice had her way, she'd be wearing nothing but rags she found on the side of the road. Sadly for her, I love fashion and pretty clothing more than most things in life, so she has to deal with me having a detailed wardrobes for her. Eurydice has two different forms of downtime clothing: those she works in and those she wears around Skyhold. When the Inquisition first settled in Skyhold, Eurydice's wardrobe was whatever she had on hand and had pockets, no matter how bad they looked. I made a joke that Eurydice probably walked out of her quarters one day wrapped in a curtain that she tied with sash, and from that point on Leliana, Josephine, and Vivienne took over her wardrobe--and while that's probably an exaggeration, it's not completely off. Eurydice wears things that work and don't get in the way. She also has a tendency to like light fabrics, so she'd probably be content with something she found in an old draw or in the servant's quarters. I think when she was with the clan, she and her sister Melia often wore the same limited wardrobe because fabric was hard to some by and neither of them were skill weavers. They wore what they wore and fixed them when they were damaged until they could no longer be worn; then recycled them for some other use. Skyhold was the first time that she had the money or freedom to wear...new things. I want to take a brief moment to mention that Eurydice has texture sensory issues to certain fabrics. Like I said, she wears light fabrics and one of the reasons is because they overstimulate her. For example, she can't wear velvet; she has stated that she feels as if its ripping off her skin and will scream if she's forced to touch it. Taffeta has a similar reaction. Satin is touch and go. Wools, linens like Muslim, cambric, canvas, and fustian are usually what she prefers--the lighter and more breathable the material, the safer she feels. She doesn't mind leathers either, though she prefers them not directly on the skin. For a default look, Eurydice wears something like this:

Which is a modification of this PJ mod with an added skirt, sash, and different sleeves. This is definitely the one she's most comfortable wearing, as you can tell by her skirt's hem being tattered (and it's absolutely filthy). The skirt has extra pockets and the sash acts as one big pocket which she carries things like seeds or books in. It certainly the one she wears when she's working in the stables or in her workshop. Eurydice has a another part of wardrobe specifically for lounge wear or at least for less formal meetings with nobles--these outfits also use lighter fabrics but are noted for being more expensive, having high-quality metals, jewels, and embroidery sewn into them. These formal looks usually look like the outfits I've drawn here: 1, 2, 3, 4. Usually her hair is either down, or put up in braids and buns with ribbons. She likes jewelry, especially earrings, so when she's feeling particularly pretty, she might wear silver and gold earrings. As for formal events like Judgements, galas, noble meetings, or the like, Eurydice's wardrobe and hair are given the full royal treatment. Crowns, layers dresses with flowing sleeves and caps, the very best jewelry the Inquisition can't get, and beautiful pearl laced hairstyles. So examples like: 1, 2, 3. It's pretty obvious that she's never quite happy to be in these looks, especially because people fuss around her. By the end of the night, she's thrown parts of the outfits off somewhere over her shoulder. And as you can imagine, her Winter Palace look is probably even more grand (and upsetting for her). I don't have many pictures because I've been drawing and redrawing and scrapping her Winter Palace look for years but the main description I can give is that it invokes a moon goddess image, with her having a train and cape that looks like glittering stars, and a heavy head dress with moons on it. Finally, Eurydice armor is also something I've been playing with for years and while I don't have an exact picture, I will say it's meant to be a cross between Dancer of the Boreal Valley from Dark Souls, the Nightingale Robes from Skyrim, and the Dalish armor concept from DA2. She definitely has a full faced, featureless mask on. Most people presume that she's an old woman in her armor because of her mask, her grey hair, her slump when she walks, and her deep voice.

10 - Are there any animals they have a particular love or hatred for?

Eurydice doesn't hate any animal. I used to think she hated spiders but now I'm like no, she loves them. Crawling little friends. They're doing their jobs, why should she bother them? If they make cobwebs in her hair, that's THEIR business. But hallas are the ones she holds closest to her heart. Eurydice doesn't just love halla, she feels protected and respected when they're around her—a group of them relaxing in the middle of a field feels like home to her. Halla are intertwined with her more significant relationships. She's been enamored since she was a baby and her grandmother (her Hahmama) would carry her around and tell her about them through the day; she even made a halla plush for Eurydice to sleep with. Actually, Eurydice was selective mute for a good portion of her childhood and the only times she would talk was if she was either her Hahmama or her sister Melia—or if she was with halla. Most people didn't even know baby Eurydice could speak until they'd pass by her sitting with a group and blabber to them—BUT if they tried to talk to her themselves, she'd become quiet again. And that was thing—from a young age, halla didn't require anything OF Eurydice. They just liked that she was there, that she plop down with the tiny useless things she found, talk their ears off, and cuddle by their sides. Halla don't judge, they don't say Eurydice talks in odd ways—too fast, too slow, not happy enough, not using the right words. It's hard to be in the world as it is but to be in a place with creatures who let you simply exist and are happy with is unique to Eurydice. It's sad really because as talented she is with magic, her coming into it destroyed her dreams of being a halla mistress. All she wanted as a child was to stay with her halla and her sister. She wanted to become a halla mistress with Melia, raise and care for the beings that welcomed her into their family when no one else did. It's one of the reasons Eurydice hid her magic she was twelve—because she knew once it was revealed, everything she wanted would be taken away for the good of the clan. And it was. Eurydice had to be The First, she had to learned the ways of magic and lore and leadership over her people, even when she wasn't her people's first (or even last) choice for successor. So no more halla—no more running away with Melia to pretend to be halla mistress' in the forest. The best she could do was watch them from afar, ride them when she was able, and have Ghilan'nain's vallaslin. Anyway, all animals are good animals, even the ones that try to eat her. If they kill her, that's her fault, she was slipping,

11 - Do they have any interest in folk tales or folk songs?

She does. As I mentioned above, Eurydice's Hahmama started her love for halla and the reason for that was because her Hahmama was actually the clan's storyteller. Her Hahmama was like a library of stories and songs, every day she'd beguile the clan's children with myths and legends, and every night she'd sing to the adults about old heroes and love affairs with the gods. But the special stories about hallas and Ghilan'nain were reserved for her grandchildren and little Eurydice was enthralled with them through her. So as she grew, she'd collected them in her mind like her Hahmama did before her. Though she's no storyteller, she knows her people's folk tales and songs well, and she keeps in her heart for those she loves. And when her children come, she'll sit them down and tell them all they need to know.

I have to determine if I'm capable of an Arnie and/or Jason Momoa impression for long enough without laughing, because one of our characters (a Scottish WW1 medical corps veteran turned professor of linguistics) is a direct linage descendant of Conan the Barbarian; his biological mothers are the Great Old One Yhoundeh and her sole remaining - as of the 1930s - human high priestess; his wife is a Hunting Horror and his boyfriend (his old CO from the Great War) is a Servant of Sobek (think Alfred from Batman if he was a really buff anthro crocodile man). Not to mention his adopted son from Borneo. Man's got a complicated life lmao.

AAAAAA THANK YOu it's my favourite thing I wanna learn moreeeee about it so badddd. I have a pretty base level understanding but I think they're such a fun and subtle storytelling device. You learn so much about the characters just based on the forms they use! Like what does it say about a Jedi if they decid to pursue a saber form in their knighthood whose ideology is a subversion of their Master's chosen form? What does it say if they decide to keep their Master's chosen form? What if they never stray from shii-cho at all like Kit Fisto? I think I'm also extremely interested in the fact that real world people study these styles, obviously as more of a flourish type thing or for choreography, not necessarily for combat, but it's real and concrete and that's so much fun!

Don't get me started on real-world lightsaber technology, I think the hobby for a lot of people transcends Star Wars fandom, because it really is about programming, customization, sound design, and choreographed combat!!

Grian: runs a flower shop, used to be a formidable adventurer (see further notes below). has a minor rivalry with a gardening store across the street. Collabs with the coffee shop for limited drinks

Mumbo: grian's coworker who's very entertained by the scar antics and occasionally teases him about it. often seen with a broom and dustpan as grian “sheds” so much 

Bdubs: runs a coffee shop, mainly works as a barista rather than a manager as he’s short staffed. knows all the great gossip in town although he rarely gossips himself. dislikes Scar as he holds up the line when venting about his crush on the flower boy. Collabs with the flower shop for limited drinks.

Cub: Scar’s traveling buddy, was the one who found out what town Grian retired to.

Pearl: a witch who runs a crystal/herb shop. nobody knows where she came from. one day her shop was just there. nobody questioned it.

Cleo: runs a small pawn/thrift shop with Joe. was a pirate before she drowned. Joe brought her back against both their wills and now she’s his problem

Joe: former sorcerer who quit after he was forced to resurrect a dead pirate so some people could question her. the two ran away and now run a small pawn/thrift shop together

Doc: runs a small gardening/produce shop across the street from Grian. also a retired adventurer, lost his arm and half his face after winning a duel he was supposed to lose.

Ren: works at the gardening/produce shop. werewolf, just becomes a big dog when he turns.

Impulse: helps run the village inn when he’s not trying to keep his cousins out of trouble. dwarf who's the go-to when it comes to knowledge about different species of people. usually busy running the front desk and does all the heavy lifting.

Zedaph (satyr) & Tango (fireborn): Impulse’s cousins. help around the inn occasionally, but are often on long adventures out of town

Gem: satyr who owns the village inn. Zedaph’s sister and Impulse’s cousin. usually busy with housekeeping.

- Grian flower notes -

When sick: flowers closed off and in a budding state/wilted

When scared: thorns starts to surround and wrap around him- does hurt

When flustered/happy: large growths of red flowers that tend to fall off easily

When upset: blue flowers grow when sad, small violet clusters when anxious, and large orange flowers when angry

Additional skills before retirement: plants helped him sense others around (it only works when he’s in like an area where plants are naturally made like forests and such), his flowers would also attract his victims and prey, from how pretty they are, leaving a trail, or even the smell (same smell every time).

Ideal date: walk around in places with pretty structures or land
