What to do when you've crossed a line?
Tumblr media
C.(S). Jeonghan x Reader | WC. 1031 | G. Angst| Pt. 5/? | *Jeonghan's POV*
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 |
“Wait Y/N!”
He watches you run away. He couldn’t let you get away for a second time.
His feet are stuck once again to the floor of campus hallway, everyone staring at him, as he stands unmoving and staring at your receding figure.
It’s not until Seungcheol literally slaps his back that he snaps out of the trance of tracking your disappearance.
“GO! What are you waiting for?”
His brain finally decides to comprehend the situation and instead of shutting down, his feet get the memo to follow your steps, picking up the pace as he races down the hall.
He reaches outside and sees you in the distance getting onto the local bus—well timed for your getaway.
He has a clue as to where you might be heading so he turns around to go find Seungcheol again, he had to catch up to you and he couldn’t afford to make the same mistake a third time.
He finds Seungcheol in the same hallway talking to some people, but he lifts his head to see Jeonghan fast approaching him.
“Did you chicken out again?” Seungcheol, despite only being a few months older always had a way to make Jeonghan feel like he was being scolded by a parent.
“I need your keys!”
“What?”
Jeonghan, in a clear immediate rush, starts to pat down Seungcheol trying to locate the keys to the car.
“Hold on hold on, stop frisking me!” Seungcheol swats away Jeonghan’s hands.
Reaching into the front right pocket of his jeans, he pulls out the keys but before he can even begin to offer them, Jeonghan’s hand snatches them out of his hand and dashes, without Seungcheol even able to fully comprehend the scene.
“AT LEAST SAY ‘THANK YOU’!” Seungcheol shouts after the already long-gone Jeonghan.
He doesn’t think he’s ever run so fast in his life; he knows his destination is too far otherwise he may have just run after the bus you were currently seated in.
It takes him a bit to locate the whereabouts of Seungcheol’s car, running down the aisles to locate the familiar silver hood of his friend’s car, finally choosing to click the automatic lock button before hearing its beeps coming from his far-left side.
There is a rush in every action, fumbling with the seatbelt as he enters the driver’s seat and reverses at record speed. If he was even a little bit of a bad driver, the way in which he had reversed surely would have dinged a few cars, but muscle memory was hard to let go, even in a rush.
Speeding out of the parking lot, his patience wears thin at the sheer amount of stop signs littered to simply get off the campus grounds, but he can’t risk being ticketed just because he can’t wait a few seconds.
He has a clear image of his destination, a route he knows by heart—praying he gets to you as quickly as humanly possible.
Drumming his fingers on top of the steering wheel, he waits for the main road signal to change colours, the jittering inside his body can’t seem to rest even for a moment, the idea of sprinting to you still lingering in his mind.
Luckily the light changes before he can bolt out of the car.
He needed a distraction, something to take his mind off how long it was taking to get to his destination. Turning the dial of the volume, the radio turns on and he adjusts the radio dial until it reaches the preferred station.
“This next song is a beloved, blah blah blah”
He pays no mind to the DJ’s explanation, busy trying to turn his brain away from the anxiety of missing his chance to explain himself to you and the fear of not getting to you as soon as possible.
The dialogue is a blur, but he feels his stomach flutter as he hears the familiar tune of the guitar, your favourite song.
“Wise men say…”
“Only fools rush in…”
“But I can’t help”
“Falling in love with you…”
--------
“Jeonghan come on, let me play a song”
“I’m driving so I get to choose”
“Please please please please please please please”
His eyes roll at your consistency, unable to deny your demands as your lips turn into a pout and eyes widen like a puppy.
“...fine.”
You waste no time connecting your phone and starting your favourite song.
The stereo plays out a familiar guitar strumming before Elvis’ deep voice sounds through the speakers.
“WISE MEN SAY~”
You couldn’t contain yourself whenever the song played, eager to immerse yourself in the feeling of being in love and giddiness that the smooth love song filled in your stomach.
Turning your body, you sing to Jeonghan, giggling when he looks forward uninterested in your antics and ignoring your private concert.
When you sing louder, he attempts to stick his hand over your mouth but you’re quicker and dodge, turning away from him laughing out loud, eyes closed, attempting to compose yourself enough to continue the sing-along.
The car comes to a halt at a red light as you reach the bridge. Singing your heart out, you use Jeonghan’s right arm and hand as a microphone, moving it along serenading the surrounding traffic audience.
Turning his head, he feels that darn tug. He couldn’t help the grin that carved itself onto his lips.
He thinks that life couldn’t be any better, listening to you belt your favourite love song as if nothing mattered more, and nothing did.
The honk from a behind , snaps him out of his daydream. Turning his attention back to the road and you finish off the song with some personal adlibs.
--------
“..For I…can’t help”
“Falling in love with you…”
He looks ahead, his heart fluttering at the familiar memory but how he wishes you were here next to him, singing the song.
He shakes his head ridding the memory, trying to focus on the road ahead and the path to his destination. He turns off the radio letting the silence consume the car, he can’t dwell further on what he should’ve done before, only on what he had to do now.

Alfinnea and the Elefthysi Nomads
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
// In celebration of finally getting her bio done, I decided to make a post featuring all the lore I created for her background. This is far from all of it. There will be more. And when there is, it will go under a special section in her bio.
Alfinnea’s people are a group of nomadic wanderers who live as one with the wild world, known as the Elefthysi. Quite literally translating to “they who wander and live free in the wild,” they are experts in hunting, gathering, farming, foraging, beast handling, navigation, and magic.
Elefthysi normally travel in small groups called bands. These bands all follow different routes, noting landmarks, locations, resources, and other geographical details to be shared when they eventually reach an agreed upon destination and converge with the other bands into their larger pack. The pack will stay and set up camp in this location for a short amount of time- usually no longer than one season, often leaving sooner if necessary. During this time, they will farm, forage, hunt, and occasionally trade as individuals with other groups. Mostly though, they keep to themselves. They are known to be so remote and elusive that many only regard them as myths and legends now.
The Elefthysi have many ceremonies of note. These include:
Florenove (First Breath) - A ceremony celebrating the birth of a new nomad. They and their family are celebrated, given gifts, and their child’s name is announced.
Vinculumtor (The Forge) - Occuring at the age of 5 or 6, young nomads set off of their first quest, guided by a fellow trusted nomad of their choosing to a sacred place- the guarded ruins of the Elefthysi’s Last Stand- where they will encounter the Contricor (The Brokenhearted), a monster made of old emotions and magic who changes shape and reveals the character flaw of the nomad who must overcome said flaw to defeat it. Once they have, they will discover a kinship ore that calls out to them, mine it, bring it back to be refined, purify it, and then forge the apparatus that will hold it with the help of their nomad guide. With their kinship stone, they take the first step into becoming a beast-master.
Novitas (First Hatching) - Newly christened holders of kinship stones hatch their first egg and forge the bond with their first beast. This happens only after they have adequately trained and attuned their soul to the kinship stone. Usually happens around 8-9.
Magifera (Wild Magic) - The ceremony that tests all that they have learned in magic. They must perform spells, create and enchantment their own weapons and armor, and demonstrate an understanding of how to respectfully utilize magic. Once they have completed this, they are ready for their greatest test of all. Usually happens around 10-12.
Feromitor (First Taming) - The ceremony where nomads really put their skills to the test by taming their first wild beast instead of hatching one. This requires much more skill, both those learned from hatching and those learned from wild magic. This is the second greatest test a nomad must face. It’s also very dangerous. Many fail before they succeed. Typical start is around 13-14.
Vitafera (Wild Life) - This pivotal coming-of-age ceremony involves letting the young nomads put into practice all that they have learned. For at least a year, they will live amongst the wilds on their own, just them and their beasts. In order to return, they must bring back a great artifact as proof of some great challenge they’ve overcome in order to return to their clan and be accepted as an adult. Many do return, but not all. Happens around 16.
Feraldi (Wild Return) - The ceremony of return is celebrated in numerous ways. It includes dancing, feasts, and a ritual in which the individual’s artifact is used as a base for their soul, which is given a physical shape in the form of an independent companion that goes with them wherever they go and only parts with them at death. This being is known as a Kinbeast and it can take on any shape at any time (though they usually have one shape they use as their primary and preferred shape), as it represents the individual’s moods, instincts, and ever-changing, ever-growing nature. Kinbeasts may engulf their people in their aura and become one with them when using powerful magic or shapeshifting. They’re sacred and should not be touched by anyone but their nomad unless invited to otherwise.
Feranatus (Wild Rebirth) - A ceremony to welcome in those who join the nomad lifestyle from outside. Based on who they are and what stage of life they’re at, this ceremony can include several components of the others. The nomad who brought them in shall guide them on their journey to master the ways of the nomad and endorse them during their many trials ahead.
Amoria (Love Bond) - A ceremony to celebrate the joining of nomads into a new band. A wedding ceremony basically.
Morexolv (Death Cycle) - A funeral and celebration of life. The passed is honored and cherished as their Kinbeast guides their energy back to the earth to be reborn. Their beasts may remain or return to the wild.
Novissimemor (The Last Stand’s Memory) - A ceremony to celebrate the day the nomads lost their only permanent home in a bloody battle to the monster hunters. The place is not visited. But nomads channel their energy and magic to keep the place protected and engage in solemn festivities to honor all they lost in the fight.
Nomads customize everything. Their weapons, their instruments, their homes, their armor. Even their beasts will be painted if they allow for it. They love tying symbolism and art into everything they have. When you’re always on the move, it’s good to know that some things will always be yours. This also means that giving something handmade and hand-decorated is incredibly meaningful and important to nomads. It is a true and pure sign of their connection to one another, especially if it is something functional.
To Nomads, hair is sacred. It is used to represent bloodlines, abilities, status, and roles. It’s dyed, designed, and played with to help form bonds. Cutting it is forbidden, unless the circumstances are extreme. Because of this, cutting their hair was used as a form of humiliation and alienation by hunters.
Additionally, the Elefthysi utilize tattoos in various forms. Many are decorative and symbolic of heritage, roles, and abilities. Some, however, are runes and symbols of power marked in invisible ink that glows when their magic is used.
Similarly, the Elefthysi believe in enchanting their armor for extra protection. They use enchantments to aid in camouflage, stealth, and protection. They will even enchant their weapons to make them more effective.
HOWEVER, the Elefthysi do not use magic itself as a weapon. To them, magic is energy tied to the earth and the life force the flows within it and all living things. They believe that such a force must never be used for destruction. Magic is used only as a tool, for entertainment, for recreation, and for lifestyle purposes. It should be treated and handled with respect, for failure to do so can lead to chaos. As such, nomads can use it for a variety of things such as talking to plants and animals, changing shape, putting on performances, and animating normally inanimate objects. Spells, hexes, and combat magic are considered taboo in their culture if the intention is to cause direct harm. If it is to ever be utilized, it can only be utilized in defense of one’s self. Never as an offensive measure.
Nomads place high priority on protecting all living things. They respect the earth and its creatures very deeply, and they believe that any beast’s soul holds equal value as a human’s. As such, they have a variety of practices on how to ensure the souls of any beasts they kill pass on peacefully. This includes wasting absolutely no part of a beast.
While the Elefthysi people normally travel by foot in caravans, they are also capable of moving via boat or by airship caravan. They will use their beasts as bases for lightweight homes and create bridges between the moving structures they erect on their mounts’ backs.
The Elefthysi, due to their history, place very high value on their elders to pass down knowledge and information pivotal to their survival. They are also incredibly protective of their children and look to them to carry on the future of their nomadic ways.
While it’s incredibly uncommon now, the Elefthysi do allow for the induction of outsiders. The nomad who brings them in is deemed responsible for them, from their training to their adjustment, and will act as their sponsor for all events they partake in.

Previously: Metroids! The life sucking beasts!
Onward into what is presumably the world of Super Metroid!
Chapter 8: Zebes! The base of technology!
Or: Skipping Through Wastelands of DEATH
Tumblr media
Welcome to Crateria! Please ignore the extreme cold and acid rain, the author certainly does.
Samus's gunship lands, and she, Chris, and Lucario emerge out into Crateria, the starting area of Super Metroid's map. Despite pretty much the entirety of Planet Zebes being extremely hostile, Chris and Lucario seem surprisingly unaffected by the climate, instead drawing attention to the horde of enemies approaching them. One advantage of this being a story instead of a game is that unlike a first-time Metroid player, Samus remembers her previous trips to Zebes, and already has a destination in mind: the Space Pirate base, deep underground in the area called Brinstar. But there's a surprisingly large amount of enemies meeting the group right out of the gate, and Samus speculates that the Space Pirates specifically brought in additional forces from off-planet to supplement their defenses.
While the three heroes rampage across the crater, Lucario comes across a random chest, opens it, and finds a pair of gloves. He puts them on, notes they fit perfectly and that he feels a bit stronger (as if Lucario needs to be stronger!?!?!) and the group moves on. I have absolutely no clue what these gloves are. Presumably the author was trying to play into the vibes of the story being an RPG, with Chris and Lucario finding personalized items to fight with as the story progresses, but while the story DOES game more game elements, this aspect ends up being completely dropped.
In fact, a lot of this chapter specifically is a bit clunky, compared to the higher quality and detail we know the story will eventually develop into. While the narration describes the heroes as moving from place to place, it's... really unclear as to where they actually are. The scene transitions identify the group's current location by numerically labeling the rooms, but I have no idea which room number corresponds to which room on the actual in-game map. I assume that each number DOES correspond to an on-game room (and when taking later chapters into account it's possible to vaguely map out the route out heroes take from start to finish) but the lack of detail means I can't figure out exactly what's going on. And upcoming events are going to make that even worse.
The group enters another room, and is promptly attacked by a giant worm. And immediately I groan a little inside because this worm... is probably not Metroid enemy, and definitely isn't a Super Metroid enemy. The closest thing to a giant worm in this game is Botwoon, a mini-boss that is 1) closer to a snake or eel than a worm and 2) inhabits a completely separate location on the man. This giant worm literally comes out of nowhere. Then again, that might be intentional. Samus scans the worm and identifies purple spores coming from it, which Chris assumes must be Shadow Bugs. And Shadow Bugs have been seen to be able to change the size of the things they copy in the past (for example, Shadow Diddy Kong in the original The Subspace Emissary campaign), so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that's what's happening here. Still...
Tumblr media
Behold! The most notable enemy in Metroid history! A worm! Cower in fear!
Yeah, I'm having trouble taking this seriously. But a giant worm is a giant worm, and it puts up quite a fight, tanking hits from Samus and Lucario and dodging around by entering and exiting side tunnels (another thing that makes me suspect this thing was inspired by Botwoon). Eventually it manages to smash Chris into a wall, and Chris nearly passes out. Naturally, this sends Lucario into a rage.
Tumblr media
There was a distinct lack of good Google Search results for "Worm gets blown up" so this'll have to do, sorry.
The worm retreats from Lucario's rage-fueled attack, and while Chris claims he's fine, Lucario notes his trainer looks pretty badly beaten, and so Lucario should be extra careful in making sure Chris stays safe from this point on. The group heads further into the caves.
Meanwhile, back at the Smash Mansion, Master Hand and Crazy Hand are observing Chris's progress when two of the Star Fox games light up with eerie purple light. Apparently Master Hand relocated Chris's game collection to the Mansion, stored in the Command Room for easy access when the time comes to travel to them. The purple lights emerge from the Star Fox games, merge, and enter the currently-in-use Super Metroid. Master Hand worries that something very wrong is happening.
We then cut to Subspace, where the Ancient Minister is reporting to Tabuu, informing that attempts were made to invade Corneria (a prominent location in the Star Fox series) at multiple points in the timeline, but failed due to the ongoing conflicts making it difficult to fully establish their forces. But, they were able to recruit someone to act as a Commander, and have dispatched him to Super Metroid to deal with Chris and Lucario. Tabuu approves and teleports away, and the Ancient Minister goes back to scheming.
Back with the heroes, the group meanders through a few more rooms, and Lucario and Chris briefly bicker about Chris's effectiveness in combat, while Chris expresses an insecurity about being a burden. I feel kind of bad for Samus, she's clearly just trying to keep the group on track so she can annihilate the Space Pirates and finally go home and take a nap, but the others can't help but engage in protagonist angst.
And that angst is going to get worse as the group enters the next room. The narration describes it as having an open ceiling, but... I don't know how many rooms in Super Metroid meet that description aside from the starting location. Where the heck are they? Regardless, the door seems to be locked, and the group can't figure out why. Their first guess is another enemy is going to come and face them, so they all group up back-to-back in order to watch for an oncoming threat... but nothing appears. Instead, there's a very quiet beeping. Soon, Samus is able to recognize the sound, identifying it as "a tiny bomb with enough force to push anything far away with just an explosion if the victim is very near".
Tumblr media
If you haven't watched Leverage, you should. Samus Aran and Eliot Spencer would get along extremely well, I think.
The group still can't find the bomb, however, which leads them to a very worrisome conclusion: the bomb is smack-dab in the middle of their back-to-back formation. They come to this realization too late, however, and the bomb explodes. Lucario and Samus are sent flying in one direction, and Chris is launched in the opposite direction.
Chris eventually lands in a darker area, using Force Palm to cushion his fall. Lucario reaches out to him telepathically, and the two have a brief conversation which amounts to Lucario telling Chris to stay where he is while Lucario and Samus make their way back over to him. Immediately upon the conversation concludes, Chris goes against this instruction and heads out, hoping to make the task of finding him easier and ignoring ALL the instructions anyone ever has given regarding being lost.
Fittingly, Chris immediately receives karma for his foolish actions, as Wolf O'Donnell from Star Fox immediately crashes through the ceiling, announces himself as a Commander of Subspace, and proclaims that he's here to eliminate Chris and Lucario with extreme prejudice. Chris yelps and runs. The chase is on!
And the chapter ends. I'll give a better introduction to Wolf next time, since his fight with Chris the main focus of the next chapter. Hopefully my next update will be faster, lol.
Next Up: VS Commander Wolf! Chris's first battle!

Google Maps Changes Forever: The Biggest Update in Years Brings Aid Against DANAs and Connection with Waze
Google has announced a range of updates for Google Maps, including a new feature to help in cases of DANAs (isolated depressions at high levels) or floods.
If there’s one essential app every traveler should have, whether walking, using public transport, or driving, it’s Google Maps. The internet giant has created the go-to platform for maps, thanks to its precise directions and a massive database of roads, locations, and real-time alerts that help ensure there are no unwelcome surprises along the way.
For this reason, a major update like the one Google has just announced might be met with some concern. We’ve seen many popular apps lose their way — no pun intended — by introducing controversial changes that didn’t help users. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case here.
The upcoming Google Maps updates focus on improving the app’s existing foundation rather than revolutionizing it. A prime example of this can be seen in the enhanced navigation mode, which now shows lanes more clearly, as well as key road elements like pedestrian crossings and traffic signs.
New and Improved Navigation on Google Maps
Maps can use this information to provide more accurate directions, such as indicating the exact lane you should be in to exit or merge. Now, a blue line will show the precise path to follow, and the app will display lane indicators.
In general, Google Maps’ driving mode will display more information than ever, aimed at helping users drive with less stress. After the chaos caused by the worst DANA on record, drivers will appreciate that Google Maps now displays weather-related incidents, such as flooded roads, ice, snow, or poor visibility.
The New Weather Incident Alerts in Google Maps
Drivers can report these weather incidents just as they already report accidents or traffic jams. This feature is one that Google Maps “borrowed” from Waze, though the teams behind both apps emphasize it as a collaboration. To underscore this, they announced that incidents reported on Waze will also appear on Google Maps, and vice versa, with a unified platform that automatically shares alerts across both apps.
Google Maps remains useful even when you’re outside the car — sometimes literally. Another major update is the introduction of indicators from your parking spot to your destination. Once you park, the app will remind you to save your parking location and guide you to the building entrance. This way, you won’t “get lost” trying to reach your destination and can easily find your way back to your car, using the map, Street View, or augmented reality view.
Nearby Points of Interest Along Your Route
If you’re looking to explore on your way home, the new Google Maps feature makes it easier to see nearby points of interest along your route. After planning a route, simply tap on “Add stop” and Maps will show key attractions, scenic spots, and restaurants.
It’s important to note that not all these new features will be available globally at the same time. For example, the option to add stops will be available worldwide starting next week, while the enhanced navigation experience with lane and sign indicators will launch first in 30 cities, with plans to expand to more locations.
Gemini in Google Maps
Another major update to Google Maps, however, won’t be available in Spain for now, as it will initially launch in the United States. This is the integration of Gemini into Google Maps — a less surprising addition considering that Google’s AI assistant has been rolling out across its apps. But while it may not be surprising, it’s still intriguing, as the Maps team seems to have integrated Gemini in a way that enhances rather than disrupts the experience.
Gemini won’t interfere with basic navigation but will appear in place recommendations and information panels. The goal is to enable users to ask the AI for help with planning or finding places they may have previously overlooked.
For example, you can ask for help planning an evening with friends, and Gemini might suggest a themed bar or music venue. When you select a location, the info panel will look different, with almost every category featuring data curated by Gemini. For instance, it can show customer feedback trends or provide a descriptive summary of the place.
You can also ask Gemini for details like the atmosphere or whether it has outdoor seating. Google has clarified that all this information comes from “real human input,” and user reviews remain accessible. On the topic of AI, Gemini will soon be available in Rivian electric vehicles, where it can display summaries of places like restaurants and stores on the in-car touchscreen.
Immersive View Expands to More Cities in Europe
In Europe, we’ll start seeing more cities with Immersive View. This technology drew a lot of attention upon its announcement, though initially, only a few cities were available for exploration in this mode. Immersive View uses a blend of photographs, AI, and computer vision to create realistic 3D models of cities that you can explore on your phone. This includes details like traffic conditions and changing light based on the time of day. Immersive View will now also help find parking and display complex turns along your route. It will expand to 150 cities worldwide, including several cities in Spain.

Exploring the Convenience of Self-Drive Car Rentals: Freedom on Wheels
In today's fast-paced world, the demand for flexible and convenient travel solutions is on the rise. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway, a business trip, or simply need a temporary vehicle, self-drive car rentals offer an unparalleled level of freedom and control. With the ability to choose your vehicle, plan your route, and set your own pace, self-drive car rental are becoming increasingly popular among travelers and locals alike. Let's delve into the benefits and key aspects of this trend.
The Rise of Self-Drive Car Rentals
The concept of self-drive car rentals has gained significant traction in recent years, driven by the desire for independence and the evolving needs of modern travelers. Unlike traditional car rental services that come with chauffeurs, self-drive options allow you to be in the driver's seat, quite literally. This not only gives you the liberty to explore at your own pace but also ensures privacy and a personalized travel experience.
Benefits of Self-Drive Car Rentals
Flexibility and Freedom One of the primary advantages of self-drive car rentals is the flexibility they offer. You're not bound by a chauffeur's schedule, and you can change your plans on a whim without any hassle. Whether you want to take a detour to a scenic spot or extend your trip by a few hours, the choice is entirely yours.
Cost-Effective Travel Self-drive car rentals can be a cost-effective alternative to hiring a cab or a chauffeured service, especially for longer trips. By opting for a self-drive option, you eliminate the need to pay for a driver's time and services, which can add up significantly. Moreover, you have the freedom to choose a vehicle that fits your budget, whether it's a compact car for city driving or an SUV for a road trip.
Wide Range of Vehicles Self-drive car rental services typically offer a wide variety of vehicles to choose from, catering to different preferences and requirements. Whether you're looking for a fuel-efficient sedan for a business trip, a spacious SUV for a family vacation, or a luxury car for a special occasion, there's something for everyone.
Privacy and Comfort When you're driving yourself, you have complete control over your environment. You can set the temperature, choose your music, and make stops whenever you like, without having to coordinate with a driver. This level of comfort and privacy can make your journey more enjoyable, especially during long trips.
Adventure and Exploration For those with a sense of adventure, self-drive car rentals open up a world of possibilities. You can explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, take spontaneous road trips, and discover hidden gems that may not be accessible by public transport. The journey becomes as exciting as the destination itself.
Tips for Renting a Self-Drive Car
Choose the Right Vehicle Consider the purpose of your trip and the terrain you'll be covering. For city driving, a compact car may suffice, while a sturdy SUV might be better for mountainous or rugged terrain.
Understand the Terms and Conditions Before you sign the rental agreement, make sure you understand the terms and conditions, including insurance coverage, fuel policy, and mileage limits. This will help you avoid any unexpected charges.
Inspect the Vehicle Before driving off, inspect the car for any existing damages and ensure that it's in good working condition. Report any issues to the rental company to avoid being held responsible later.
Familiarize Yourself with Local Traffic Rules If you're driving in an unfamiliar location, take some time to familiarize yourself with the local traffic rules and regulations. This will ensure a safe and smooth driving experience.
Conclusion
Self-drive car rentals are revolutionizing the way we travel, offering a blend of freedom, convenience, and cost-effectiveness. Whether you're exploring a new city, embarking on a road trip, or simply need a temporary vehicle, self-drive options provide the perfect solution. So, the next time you're planning a trip, consider hitting the road on your terms with a self-drive car rental. The road ahead is full of possibilities, and with the right vehicle, you can make the most of every journey.

Alice/Ares’ Forgotten Backstory
Things we know
Alice/Ares do not remember anything beyond their name and birthday after they wake in Whispering Woods on the second of Spring (which we will label Year 1 for convenience). Given that the player can change this name and date to be literally anything, however, there is some doubt regarding whether or not even this is accurate.
Tumblr media
Approximately twenty years ago (Year -20), Pricilla went into Belpha Ruins, somehow made it into the depths, and was attacked by something/someone.
Alice/Ares broke Livia’s seal while protecting Pricilla. Livia fully awakens after everyone has cleared the room.
While fetching Livia’s horn from the depths of Belpha Ruins, Alice/Ares remembers this scene. It is a picture of a 5/7-year-old Pricilla, laying on the ground and injured, and behind her are the preserved/sealed bodies of Lumenivia and Umbradea.
Tumblr media
And they also remember the following conversation
Sharp-Voiced Man: Why are there children here?! They’ve seen too much. I can’t let them leave. Forgive me. Girl’s Voice (Pricilla): Aaah! ??? (Alice/Ares): Nooooo! Sharp-Voiced Man: What? This power…! ???: Aaaaaah! Sharp-Voiced Man: It can’t be! The seal…is breaking? This is YOUR doing! Ugh! I won’t let you free Lumenivia...
Tumblr media
If Alice/Ares dates Pricilla through her final Marriage Event, they remember seeing each other in the ruins and that Alice/Ares was the one who “rescued” her. Yuki, Simone, and Lucy were present when Pricilla was brought back, but they never told Pricilla details about this person. Lucy and Pricilla's parents also say that the person who brought back Pricilla left before they could ask them any questions. Lucy is also the only person who knew that Pricilla went to the ruins -- she kept this secret from everyone.
Due to the fact that Alice/Ares would have been a child at the time (unless Earthmates have increased lifespans like elves, which hasn’t been shown in other titles), we can assume the person who brought Pricilla back into town was not Alice/Ares. If it had been them, the townsfolk would have either recognized Alice/Ares or mentioned a literal child brought back Pricilla.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sech Empire fell over a generation ago, but the aftermath of its downfall was felt for "decades" in both Sech and Norad.
Tumblr media
No one in Rigbarth recognizes Alice/Ares. No one outside of Rigbarth ever comes looking for them either.
Rigbarth in present day is a tourist destination, but it is also located along a major trade route (Gadeus Grasslands through Whispering Woods, since that's where Misasagi/Hina came to get into Rigbarth).

Things we can infer from these facts and safely assume to be canon
Alice/Ares did not live in Rigbarth at any point of their childhood. If they had, at minimum, Yuki and Randolph would have remembered them.
Alice/Ares and their parents were likely refugees from the Sech Empire.
Alice/Ares’ family was passing through Rigbarth when baby Alice/Ares wandered away from their family to play in the ruins.
Alice/Ares may or may not have intentionally followed Pricilla into the ruins. They might have simply found her there by coincidence, but given their penchant to casually stalk and eavesdrop on people (there are so many town events where they are incredibly nosy), I like to believe Alice/Ares always had that habit.
My idea that lacks support, but is my personal headcanon
The “Sharp-Voiced Man” kidnapped Alice/Ares, took Radea’s skull, and took Pricilla back to Rigbarth.
After he realized what Alice/Ares was, they quickly changed plans. Earthmates were too rare/valuable to simply kill, so he tricked Alice/Ares into thinking Lumenivia is A Big Bad Thing, and that Alice/Ares just misheard him before. They get Alice/Ares on their side by grabbing Pricilla and telling them that they’re rescuing her now from the Big Bad Thing, and they run out of the ruins. In Rigbarth, the “Sharp-Voiced Man” makes Alice/Ares wait for him while he drops off Pricilla at the nearest clinic, and then talks them into following him out of town.
Alice/Ares probably figured something was up at this point, but being a Literal Child, there wasn’t much they could do about being kidnapped.
After the “Sharp-Voiced Man” took Alice/Ares away, their parents would’ve noticed their absence and called a search. People in town would’ve eventually realized that wherever Alice/Ares went… it was probably the same place that Pricilla got hurt. Lucy knew where Pricilla went, but naturally she stayed quiet out of terror of losing her best friend (since she was also a Literal Child). The adults waited for Pricilla to wake up and see if she remembered seeing Alice/Ares, but of course, she remembered absolutely nothing because Trauma.
So… Alice/Ares’ parents would’ve eventually left and assumed their kid was killed in those ruins, or somehow realized that even if they were okay, whoever took them wasn’t going to bring them back.
At some point, Radea's skull ends up with Oswald/Gideon. Maybe "Sharp-Voiced Man" raised Alice/Ares himself, maybe he sold them off to the higest bidder, or maybe SEED took custody. Depending on how much involvement you want between Gideon and Alice/Ares, this portion is free real estate for headcanons.
Fast forward about twenty years, and Alice/Ares figure out or remember the name of the town where they were separated from their parents. They make an escape plan, manage to get through Whispering Woods, and then… their memory is wiped because of the spell circle.
Eventually, however, because their backstory is inextricably linked with Pricilla’s, Terry will be able to track down Alice/Ares’ parents. It’s the cold case file of the century, after all, and you can bet this man has been itching to figure out what happened to the missing child. He needs the satisfaction of reuniting the family, and dammit, so do I.

Diabolik lovers Chaos Lineage: Shin Tsukinami (Story 14)
Welcome back! In terms of the gameplay: The black choices lead up to a bad ending, the white choices lead up to a good ending. Please no reposting onto other sites, ask me before translating this into another language too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Place: Miniature Garden — Forest
Kino: Damn! This path is the literal definition of bad foothold.
Shin: Be careful, the width of the road narrows the more we walk on it.
Besides, there also seems to be a cliff over there, so don’t fall off either.
Yui: Ah, that’s right. I’ll walk carefully not to get off the right track then.
(Depending on the current situation, if I don’t watch my steps while walking, I might really fall down…)
(I’m getting scared just thinking about it…)
Shin: If you’re aware that there’s a cliff near us, it’s obvious you’re terrified, but even more of a reason to walk while looking ahead of yourself.
Yui: Y-Yes, I will.
(As Shin-kun said just now… I have to look ahead of myself and watch my steps)
Kyaaa!
(My leg slipped — Ngh!)
Shin: Yui!!
Haa… geez, that’s what I just said… are you okay?
Yui: Y-Yes. I-I got startled… I’m sorry.
(Shin-kun did an amazing job, saving me by grabbing my hand like that)
Shin: I was the one you surprised with your actions… so don’t try to pull that stunt again.
Yui: I-I won’t. I’m sorry. I was really trying to be careful.
Tumblr media
Shin: You’re such a handful, for real. Come on, if you hold onto me, I’ll support you.
Yui: Okay, thanks!
(I know he told me to hold onto him… but is that really okay? I’m getting really embarrassed all of the sudden)
(Uhhh… his firm grip is majorly supporting my waist…)
Shin: Hm? What’s with the red face?
Yui: Eh!?
Shin: I thought you weren’t feeling well and whatnot, but could it be you actually…
Yui: Eh!? No, that’s not it! I’m just embarrassed, don’t read so much into it… ! Shin: Kuku, so you are ashamed after all.
Yui: Ah… !
(Great… I’ve literally dug my own grave now…)
Shin: I’m happy to see your cute face n’ stuff, but for now, you should seriously hold on tight.
Yui: Geez, Shin-kun… ! I got it, I’ll be careful.
*let’s Yui down*
Shin: Huff. We’ve come this far already, I think the road is more spacious and safer now.
Yui: Thank you, Shin-kun.
Shin: But you know, we’re still close to the edge of a cliff. It didn’t change that fact at least.
Yui: Yes, I know.
Kino: Ah, there you are. The heck are you doing? You’re falling behind.
Tumblr media
Yui: Sorry. I just almost tripped and fell down.
Kino: Hah!? You’re seriously that clumsy? Didn’t we tell you to be careful to begin with?
Yui: Y-You did… I’m sorry for worrying you.
Kino: Even if I was, the footing is seriously horrible. If we happen to encounter any enemies here, there won’t be any escape routes this time.
Shin: …Well said. Which is why we need to hurry up and find that church before they find us.
Kino: But you do know that if we get caught going to the church, we might get ambushed either way?
Yui: He’s right. We’re talking about Carla-san after all.
Shin: I know my brother’s a smart one. It’s definitely possible for him to grasp our movements somewhere and therefore get ahead of us.
...Hnff!
Yui: Shin-kun, what’s it?
Shin: …This smell — It’s my brother.
Yui: ...Nn!
Kino: Great, the worst-case scenario came true. Congrats, your prediction won the competition.
*Carla appears*
Yui: …Nn!
Carla: Just as I thought, you are still moving around together. And your final destination appears to be the church.
Tumblr media
Kino: Of course we had to run right into the only person we didn’t want to encounter of all people.
Shin: ...Brother.
Carla: You do not deserve to call me your brother.
Yui: (What should we do… !? The thing we were most afraid of… in a place like this on top…)
Shin-kun, we need to run away! We cannot fight Carla-san here.
Shin: We can’t. There’s no way to escape from this location right now, not if my brother’s able to easily catch up to us.
Carla: Hmph, certainly right.
Kino: I know running away isn’t an option. But if we end up fighting Carla here, his friends will notice us and help him.
If these guys were to rush over, it would turn out to be a 5 vs 2 fight. And there’s no way we could win that one then.
Yui: So we really have no other option… ?
(This can’t be… ! We’ve finally made it this far, we were getting so close to the church already!)
Carla: Hmph, do not worry about my brothers unnecessarily rushing over. I can certainly handle all three of you by myself.
Shin: True, that is something my brother would say.
*Shin gets closer to Carla*
Yui: (Shin-kun’s closing the distance between him and Carla-san. What is he planning—?)
Tumblr media
*Shin draws his sword*
Shin: You two stay back. I’ll take care of this issue. No, I’m the only one supposed to fight with him anyway.
Yui: Shin-kun!
Kino: …Well, if that’s what you want to do, I won’t stop you. But don’t die, Shin.
Shin: You can bet on that.
Carla: Hmph. And you are willing to fight me all on your own?
Even if you happen to be able to transform into a wolf, you are well beyond my capabilities. You should certainly know that much.
Shin: The sheer absolute confidence is the same as it has always been, right brother? I’m relieved this didn’t change a bit.
Carla: And yet again… you simply will not stop calling me your brother.
Shin: Even so it’s not like you don’t care at all, right?
Isn’t there something you remembered, too?
Carla: What absolute nonsense…
Yui: (Come to think of it… Laito-kun did mention that Carla-san has been continuously talking about Shin-kun…)
*flashback*
Laito: Yeah, that’s right and all. But aren’t you a bit too obsessed with that wolf, Carla?
Tumblr media
Carla: You, what are you talking about? Do not say anything you cannot comprehend.
Laito: What? You didn’t even notice? Sometimes you even talk to yourself “Shin, Shin…” or maybe you’re saying that unconsciously?
As one of your brothers, I’m a little jealous of that.
Carla: —Silence.
*flashback ends*
Yui: (Hearing this re-play in my mind, Shin-kun must’ve thought Carla-san was in the process of regaining his memory already…)
(Therefore, perhaps if he calls out to him right now, Carla-san’s memories will come back to him…)
Shin: Kino, sorry. I know you’ve first of all wanted to find a way to go back home and stuff.
But now that my brother’s in front of me, I can’t keep chasing that plan anymore.
Kino: Not like I mind. In the end, you can still do what you want. No need to regret anything.
You don’t need to worry about me or anything, focus on who’s before you and get his memories back!
Shin: Kuku, yeah, will do.
*Kino backs off*
Carla: You have certainly been an annoyance ever since the very beginning. But from today onwards, I will no longer tolerate this.
Tumblr media
*swords clash*
Shin: …Kch! Wait, brother! I don’t want to fight you!
Let’s talk this out, please! You think of yourself as a vampire as well as violet’s eldest son…
But in reality I’m the only brother you have! Both of us are first bloods… we’re founders!
Carla: ...Nn!
Shin: Please remember, brother… hearing about this, doesn’t it ring a bell to you?
I’m sure you remember my face! I know we’re supposed to be opponents, but that’s not the case and never will be!
Carla: …Nn, silence. How offensive to hear. You need to be silenced instantly.
Shin: Brother! I’m just trying to put an end to all of this. As the founder’s king, you mustn’t do such a thing.
Carla: I told you to shut up… but okay, if you cannot shut your mouth yourself, I will certainly shut it for you.
*swords clash*
Shin: ...Ngh, Kch!
Yui: Hang in there, Shin-kun!
(Please, don’t lose… ! I’m more than sure you can restore Carla-san’s memories if you keep pressuring him like that!)
Tumblr media
Shin: Say, have you really forgotten everything? About yourself, about me and about everything else?
Carla: You are a persistent one, indeed. I only have four younger brothers. I am getting tired of repeating myself over and over again.
Shin: Don’t spread such bullshit! I’ll be incessant about this if I have to. I’ll repeat it as many times as necessary until you finally remember!
I’m your only brother!
Carla: Silence. I am tired of this.
*Carla stabs Shin*
Shin: Uah… ! That hurt… !
Yui: No! Shin-kun!
Kino: ...Nn! Shin!
Yui: (Carla-san must’ve given it all he got with this blow! His blood is all over the place…)
Carla: Hmph, seems as if you were finally able to close that mouth of yours. But this is not the end of it yet.
*Carla pulls his sword out*
Shin: Agh… ! Kch… !
Kino: It’s no use. Carla is way more overwhelming than I expected. At this rate, Shin won’ t survive another attack.
Yui: No…
Choices
1) Escape (black)
2) Persuade him (white)♡♡♡
Tumblr media
— Escape
Yui: Shin-kun! Please, don’t overdo it. Let’s just run away for now…
Shin: Sorry, I can’t do that.
Now that I’m facing my brother on his own, I can’t simply turn my back anymore and run away.
I’ve already decided to restore his memories, and I won’t leave until that happens!
Yui: But… if things go on like right now, Shin-kun will…
I hate that idea… I don’t want to lose you.
Shin: Hm? What are you talking about? As a founder, I stand above everything and everyone. I’ll never leave your side to die here.
— Persuade him♡
Yui: Listen, Carla-san! It may be hard to believe, but everything Shin-kun said is the truth!
Carla: …Eve, have you been tricked into this nonsense as well? Or is it that this man tricked you into believing gibberish?
Yui: Neither of that. Carla-san, can’t you tell by just looking at Shin-kun’s expression that he’s not lying to you?
Shin-kun’s the only part of your real family that’s left. And if you go on like that, you will destroy your family with your own hands!
Shin: Yui… are you telling him that… for my sake?
I know you must be scared because of my unreasonable actions. But really, you’re a good girl.
end Choices
Carla: Hmph, each of you is getting on my nerves…
I will not give in and spare your life once more. I will end this here and now.
*swords clash*
Shin: Kch… listen to me, brother!
Yui: (At this rate, Carla-san will seriously end Shin-kun… !)
Shin-kun… !!
Ngh… ! Let me go, Kino-kun!
Kino: Hold on, what are you planning to do? It would be suicide if you ran between them now.
Tumblr media
Yui: But if I don’t do anything right now, Shin-kun will be killed!
*Yui struggles*
Kino: Calm down. I won’t let you go even if you want to.
Yui: Why, why!? What should I do then!?
Kino-kun, please. How can I get Carla-san to listen to him? There must be a way, right!?
Kino: Mmmh… even if you say that…
*Carla stabs Shin again*
Shin: ...Gah!
Yui: Ah, Shin-kun!
(——If we don’t do anything any time soon, it will be too late!!)

Hello! I really love your art and fics for Lout of the Count's Family, I found your blog by chance but it's actually what got me into LCF to begin with. I actually wanted to ask you about TWSB. I've seen you post about it and I've found a synopsis online, but would you mind talking about what you like about it?
OH GOD ACTUALLY I THINK I CAN GO ON FOREVER ABOUT THIS??? THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN AMAZING QUESTION I literally have so much to say, but also not enough words to even begin describing the full extent of what TWSB does to me.
To make things easier for me to write and for you to read, I think this will primarily be in messy bullet point form xDD
(Oh and omg?? I'm glad I was able to help get you into LCF. Perhaps I can hope to do the same with TWSB? 👀😂)
Haha but okay— So. Maybe we'll start with the premise/overall novel I guess? I just love it so much. After that we'll get to characters.
It's "Transmigration into a novel" trope—BUT!!! Refreshing take! Jung Yeseo actually hasn't read the og!novel. He literally knows nothing about what's going on besides what his younger sister, Jung Eunseo, has told him of both the plot and characters.
Thus, he sorta treats his sister's words like a survival guide. Even if the info becomes inaccurate as time goes by and his meddling with the plot changes things.
He knows how important the og!novel was to his younger sister. She cherished it, so in a way, he does too and wishes for it to go the same route.
But this is muddled by the fact that the character he transmigrated into, Jung Yeseo, dies during the war between the Riester Empire and the Venetiaan Holy Kingdom, after taking a blow meant for the Riester Empire's Prince, and Original Male Lead :|||||
Yeseo, now Jesse, as all main characters destined to die do, announces that he will ✨avoid the main characters, stay out of the plot, and survive peacefully as the diplomatic hostage, priest of a prince that he is.✨
Plot twist: this fool cannot escape the main characters xDD
Sounds like the typical transmigration plot, BUT!! with it's own refreshing takes!
We have 2 transmigrators. Yeseo (Jesse) and the og!MC Christelle, (originally a fellow Korean worker in her 30s named Ham Ga-in).
Original novel was a RoFan (Romance-Fantasy).
Current novel (TWSB) is anything BUT that xDD
Pace might seem slow at first, but it is pretty slice-of-life! Later on however, we get to see more adventure/action, as the characters slowly find goals and travel around the continent.
Speaking of continent, THIS NOVEL HAS AMAZING WORLDBUILDING.
Pretty much all of the locations are even based off current countries.
For example, Riester Empire's culture/character names are inspired by France. Venetiaan Holy Kingdom is inspired by Dutch.
Power system (mana, ether, priests, holy knights, mages, swordsmen, etc) is so interesting and well thought out. There are rules that are concretely established and it's just the best.
Interesting dynamics between Priests and Holy Knights! Symbiotic relationship!!! Which the main characters have! :D
Cédric and Christelle are both Holy Knights, so they require a priest to help replenish them with ether. Jung Yeseo/Jesse just so happens to have overwhelming amounts of ether due to special circumstances that eventually get mentioned :D
They are practically married due to this (/hj). They call each other partners and everything (Cédeic especially gets giddy when Jesse calls him this. The stoic simp, tsk.)
Romance is non-existent but MAN DO THESE INTERACTIONS FUEL THE SHIPPER HEART.
One this I ADORE about Sookym-nim's universe is that people just seem so open?? when it comes to sexuality?? No one finds anything wrong with suggesting if two people, or even multiple people, can enter a romantic relationship.
You actually don't realize this until you really think about it. It's a subtle thing but it made me so happy when I realized that.
The Priest/Holy Knight partnership/holy covenant is actually kinda like that. A deep and special relationship. Holy Knights are known to be very protective of their Priests.
Also, both women AND men have been explicitly stated to take interest in Jesse. At some point, the empress, Frédérique Riester, mentions (while comparing Yeseo to the rumours surrounding og!Jesse—who you can sort of think of as a less alcoholic and violent og!Cale Henituse) that Jesse didn't seem like he had any experience bedding either women or men. The universe really says Bi rights and I love it HAHA
Also—Sookym writes women so well. So many great women in power, so many kind, compassionate women. Women who are smart, scheming, funny, sly, powerful—so many types of women for us sapphics to simp over.
In both the Riester Empire and Venetiaan Holy Kingdom, line of succession/inheritance isn't based on gender, but on first born. Riester Empress Frédérique is so COOL, I simp.
(in some cases, such as Blanquer Duchy, competence also plays a bigger part instead of who is born first!)
Ofc the guys are also amazing as well!
We also have cute animals. So many cute, cute animals. I cry.
ANYWAYS!! CHARACTERS!!
The protagonist: Jung Yeseo, 28, who transmigrated into Prince Jesse Venetiaan of the Holy Kingdom, priest and diplomatic hostage in the Riester Empire. In the original novel, he was the 2nd Male Lead who died taking a blow for the Male Lead (Riester Empire's Crown Prince Cédric Riester) during the war between their kingdoms.
He's super kind. Refreshing when you consider all the angsty, sad, emo, stoic and tragic MCs LMFAO.
Of course his past isn't perfect, but he has amazing, wonderful supportive siblings and he grew up as a well-adjusted modern-day Korean citizen. Really just a kind, good "boy-next-door" type of character!
He can be a little prickly in his internal narrations, but who isn't? xD
I've seen reviews call him a Mary Sue and I want to WRANGLE NECKS.
Apparently being kind is just too much of a trait for some people??
Personally, I think it's one of his biggest strength. I love a compassionate MC, and even of his morals might seem foolish a bit, they are reasonable and admirable.
His kindness sort of make you want to tear up a bit: "how can someone as nice as this exist?"
But of course, it isn't unconditional. He knows when people are wrong, and when they deserve to be punished, and will get angry and vicious accordingly. But even despite that, he will frequently have that small thread of compassion for even people who harm (ex: The situation with Peter, Synkie, especially because they were kids—and Jesse has a soft spot for kids, but even so, he naturally acknowledges they deserve some kind of retribution for nearly assassinating him).
(Of course, when people are irredeemable, he doesn't play saint. He's a good guy, but not all-forgiving—and like it was mentioned by a Eunseo cameo in a certain chapter in the 500s, Jung Yeseo is a frightening person when angry.)
(Tldlr, Never piss off the kind and gentle person in a group. They are secretly the scariest when angry, and Jesse is no exception to that—if he gets angry then you KNOW shits going down oml haha)
But overall, he really just gives off the impression of someone who would be a very good and genuine friend :')
He radiates so much Big Brother Energy™ both literally and figuratively.
Even if annoyed, he will still be weak to young kids (again, see above: Older Brother Energy™). Even if the said "child" is actually a 24yo man, Yeseo will eventually succumb to his hyung instincts LMFAO. Which brings us to Cédric Riester (see section after Jesse bullet points) 😂
(He does swear however, though never at a person, but always at a situation. Apparently the Jung Family had a swear jar growing up, though it was his younger sister who mostly ended up giving it money xD)
HES ALSO SO UNINTENTIONALLY FUNNY???? At some point, his friends are getting scolded heavily at the table by the Empress, and it's very much the sort of scene where you, the outsider of a family, has been invited to their family dinner, only for the head of the family/stern asian mother to start scolding your friends right in front of the table.
Except, instead of feeling very awkward, Jesse just continues eating LMFAO and the only time he ever really stops is because his chewing sounds too loud during the scolding, and he still has some shame left HAHA
(This guy is always eating, and it's admirable lolol but tbf in that situation, Ced, Chris and Eli deserved the scokding sKSKKSK)
Anyway— I like how they explore Jesse's status as a transmigrator, as well. He initially thinks of these people around him as characters, whom he only really knows through whatever it was his sister has told him, but he eventually grows to care for them genuinely.
Despite this, he is still very much a young man who cares deeply for his siblings that he believes he left at home, and doesn't know for how long, and naturally experiences home sickness. That's his goal, after all—to finish his role and eventually, somehow, go back home to his siblings.
(SPOILER-ISH 170+):
At some point, we see a vision of his apartment's veranda, and Jesse tries reaching for it. It won't go into much detail, but it's a rather bittersweet moment, especially when other characters, such as Cédric, misinterprets it as Jesse wanting to leave them—the friends he made who genuinely care for him (even if Cédric doesn't exactly show it in the most outward of ways.) Novel characters grow anxious about him feeling as if he could disappear at any moment, and Jesse has to deal with the dilemma of "do I want to return home? Can I really leave behind these people I've come to care about? Are they even real? What will happen to my body if I choose to stay in one world of the other?"
((END OF SPOILER))
His relationship with Cardinal Aurélie Boutier is also one of my most favourite things ever. She becomes a sort of mother figure after they become teacher and apprentice, and the amount of care Aurélie has for him brings me to tears sometimes. She doesn't have any children, but the way she eventually grows to consider Jesse as her own is just TTvTT<3
ANYWAY I LOVE HOW THEY EVENTUALLY GO ABOUT THE WHOLE NOVEL/REALITY THEME IN THIS BOOK. It's so so so good.
With that said, lets move on to the next character :D
Cédric Riester: 24 yo at the beginning of the novel. He was the first male lead and love interest in the original novel. He's the only Prince of the Riester Empire.
He's also lowkey bisexual but that's my opinion LMFAOOO (more like he's MainCharacterSexual)
Speaking from experience: you might hate this guy at first 😂 A lot of my friends and other readers did and I laugh about it all the time.
Eventually tho, he will probably become one of your favourite characters, if not THE favourite. Regardless, you will grow fond of him, as you will pretty much all of the main characters!
For comparison, he's similar to Yoo Jooghyuk from ORV. You really gotta get to know him and his motivation before he starts growing on you like the fastest mold.
His backstory explains a lot, and MY GOD DO YOU GROW FOND OF HIM.
He's so easy to bully. It's a fandom joke at this point to call him derogatory nicknames like; Ether pig. Black pig. Pig. Mosquito. 24/25-month-old kid. Brat. Crapdric. Cedick. Simpdric. Sapdric.
But don't get us wrong it's all done affectionately auhsdhskks
You might become a Cédric defender/apologist the more you read about him.
But how can you be an apologist if he's done nothing wrong—//slapped.
Thinks locking people up is the best way to protect them, and then when he notices it makes them (Jesse) sad, his 0 emotional intelligence naturally goes: 'Ah. I should hire an entire performing circus troop to his palace so that he will feel better.'
The poor guy is TRYING alright 😭
We can kinda blame it on his parents' love story. Those two were p wild LMFAO (but also pretty sweet auahbdldlskdld Frédérique, Alexandre and Aurélie's relationship is very reminiscent of Cédric, Jesse and Christelle's). Actually the whole Riester imperial family was wild with the people they cared about HAHA
But yeah, Cédric's origins as Male Lead in a Romance-Fantasy novel really shines through sometimes, but at the end of the day, you also just gotta remember he was once a kid who spent most of his childhood sick, suffering and sleeping, and now that he can finally move around as he wishes, his full brattiness can unleash now that he found people he can be a 'kid' with and run around the continent alongside him on adventures xD
Jokes aside tho, he's a genuinely good guy.
His character development makes me cry. He's a stoic bastard, but at the end of the day, he's OUR socially inept stoic bastard.
He cares a lot for his friends. So so much. Even if he doesn't outwardly show it.
He's also lowkey very very gay for Jesse. (You might even say Bi because he did fall for Christelle in the original novel too (again, see above for my comment about him being MCsexual) 😂 (actually the main trio pretty much radiate Bi energy I'm ngl LMFAO twsb universe is just very casual with sexuality and I am fr not kidding abt this it's canon and it makes me happy))
The first time Jesse saw his smile was when Jesse called himself Cédric's partner. You also gotta keep in mind this scene happened after Ced (at the imperial palace) and Jesse (at his marquisate iirc) we're separated due to reasons, and the whole palace was placing bets as to when Cédric was finally gonna cave in and chase after Jesse and co. to join them.
Cédric ended up having in pretty quickly xD The complete simp.
Heck, once Christelle and Ced had to pretend they were a couple in front of the Empress and Cardinal in order to help Jesse out, and the Empress asked them what they liked about each other, fully knowing that those two would rather d1e than ever get together.
Cédric then immediately proceeded to describe Jesse, and got jealous when Christelle caught on and also started describing Jesse 😂😂😂
This man gets JEALOUS so much when it comes to anyone expressing nearly any amounts of attention towards Jesse aUDGHDJSKKSKS
At some point (330+) the man even proposes to Jesse. He gets down on one knee and all and starts reciting his vows to unite their sound together and stuff and I'm in TEARS whenever I reread that part, because Ced did it in the MIDDLE OF BATTLE LMFAO
BUT ALSO TBF, it wasn't exactly a marriage proposal, it was a Covenant (which is basically soul marriage between Holy Knights and Priests, in simple terms HAHA) and readers everywhere went crazy sKSKSKKS poor Cedric tho because Jesse ignored him (he was too panicked by the fact that they were literally in battle—)
Anyways yes. Cédric is a character you will easily warm up to gradually, because deep down he's a genuinely great guy.
He's a filial son, and he's a great future ruler—he constantly proves that he is perfectly capable of succeeding his mother, and he cares for both her and his godmother the cardinal )and other members of his family that u get to know better later on.) He even initiates a duel to defend both Jesse, and Jesse's deceased father's honour after his cousin besmirched their names (the cousin insulated Jesse's father, who was a commoner, and Cédric had a very close and dear relationship with his own father, who was also deceased.)
Anyways yes. Cédric is a little prickly, but he's such a good guy deep down, honourable and who stands for what's right and those he cares about.
He's also the reason for why the readers are having a hard time trying to defend the genre of the novel LMFAO (but tbf, Jesse also contributes to that too. How much poetics are these guys able to wax about each other's looks? I'm on tears, I love them hdhdjkskks)
But anyway. Homoerotic subtext is something for a whole other day xDD
There's so much to say about him, but I think I've written more than enough, so let's move on to our beloved Christelle!!!!
Christelle De Sarnez—the original protagonist of the the novel, formerly called Ham Ga-In, a South Korean woman in her 30s who one day woke up in the body of a Duke's 19 y.o daughter. In the original story, she eventually fell for the 1st ML, Cédric, after overcoming their differences. The classic RoFan novel plot!!
Christelle is so interesting as a character, I find, because in the original novel, her not having any powers (due to not having absorbed a Divine Artifact) really shaped the story into the RoFan genre (amongst other things).
BUT in TWSB, she is able to become a Holy Knight and is able to overcome that role/destiny as a damsel in distress type of Romance MC, who gets kidnapped and has to rely on the ML to save her.
Which gave us our wonderful TWSB!Christelle :DD
Instead of getting kidnapped by pirated like the original Christelle had been, our Christelle ended up becoming a "Pirate Queen" and captured a whole ship just because Jesse off-handedly remarked she should get him a souvenir when she went to visit the north xDD
She is so strong and ALSO SO FUCKING FUNNY LMFAOOO
AT SOME POINT HAHA (CH 330+) SHES IN CHARGE OF A FEW HUNDRED SOLDIERS, AND UPON ARRIVING AT A VILLAGE FOR (REASONS) MADE THEM CHANT A KPOP GREETING:
"HELLO! WE ARE THE R.I.E.S.T.E.R IMPERIAL ARMY! NICE TO MEET YOU!"
LIKE LMFAOOOO WHO PUT HER IN CHARGE OF ALL THESE SOLDIERS 😭😭😂
*deep breaths* anyways—
Reminder again that Christelle is also a transmigrator. (But unlike Jesse, the world she went into wasn't a novel, it was just a whole different world where she didn't have to be an office worked anymore and could find romance while being rich, etc.)
This means she is a modern-day South Korean who is ABSOLUTELY aware of pop culture, and says the funniest shit ever istg (see kpop riester army example above) 😂
You can tell through Christelle and all the other references made throughout the novel that the author, Sookym, is also a rather pop culture-savvy person. A lot of other movie franchises get mentioned, and references to other pieces of media/literature are often seen.
One of my favourite Christelle moments that I can think of at the top of my head is when, like I said at the end of my Cédric rant, Christelle, at the end of her and Cédric's fake couples interview with the Empress, eventually cried our "Dobby is free!!" when the questions stopped coming. It made me laugh so hard when I saw it 😂
(Comments on Ridibooks were even laughing at some point when the author included a parody version of an Aladdin song in one arc of the novel, and joked about Disney copyright striking the novel xDD)
Just like Jesse, Christelle also gives off the impression of someone who would be a very good friend. That's how she is with Jesse after all!
While Cédric is a bit more "selfish" when it comes to Jesse and their status as partners, Christelle tries to be more understanding. She is very kind, considerate and I love her. (See a lil further below for more comments about her refreshing emotional intelligence!)
One of my other favourite moments is when Christelle told Jesse that if one day, if he had the feeling that she was different, he should call her "Ham Ga-In", and if she didn't recognize it, she wouldn't be the Christelle he knew. (At that point in the story, Christelle wasn't aware that Jesse knew she was also a transmigrator—even less so that for him, she was a novel character. Which makes the scene even more touching/heartwrenching, since Christelle truly trusted him, and just proved how much she cared about all her new friends and worried about the possibility of the original Christelle coming back to take her place).
I won't get into details, but the way this story treats its transmigrators :')))) makes me cry :')) I find this novel does it very well, especially in the later chapters when secrets start unfolding 👀
(Speaking of transmigrators—this story doesn't brush that fact of lightly. Christelle, just like Jesse, also feels some sort of 'imposter syndrome' and acknowledges that she "has taken the place of someone else's previous daughter". The way the author's treated this plot line between Chris and Christelle's mother was wonderfully done, and made me cry. I love it when stories address transmigrator issues and so on.)
TWSB!Chris feels more like the best friend of a romance story's slightly oblivious protagonist xD If Jesse is blind to Cédric's ML antics and actions towards him, Christelle is completely aware and trashes him for it 😂
She has so much more emotional intelligence than Cédric (who's only friend for literal years until he reached 24 was Élisabeth, the vice-captain of the imperial guard) and she balances him so well like that.
She's often the one who goes out of her way to make sure Jesse's feelings are considered and that people (ie our socially awkward and inept Cédric) will treat him right, because that's what friends do—treat their friends right and wish for it to be that way.
Btw Ced and Chris absolutely hate each other and it's the funniest thing ever, but they also do become good friends despite their opposing attribute repulsion HAHA
(At some point, Chris considers not giving Ced advice on how to get along better with Jesse, so that Jesse would end up liking her more LMFAO but she does end up giving him her 31y.o wisdom xD)
Anyways, Chris is so so great. So lovely, so funny, I holler in nearly all her comedy bits.
She also can't sing, and it's hilarious.
Yeseo's sister once told him that the original Cedric smiled when Chris sang, and Yeseo naturally presumed it was because the original FL was just so amazing it even made the stoic ML smile.
He was dead wrong.
Christelle is tone deaf 😂
Anyways, I think this is long enough. I'm not exactly sure if this sort of response was what you were looking for, but you did ask if I could talk about what I like about this novel, and the answer is simply just this:
So, so very much.
From the amazing worldbuilding and interesting power systems,
To the lovable characters that you only grow more fond of the more you read. Of course, there will also be characters (one in particular) that you will despise to their very bone, and that in itself is just proof of how well Sookym is able to write characters.
The main 3 characters are adults in their mid 20s—30s, and yet they are all very youthful and energetic in their own ways. I find it so refreshing to other stories, where sometimes adults are portrayed with all the hardships of their ages. But here, these characters who have gone through so much are able to often act like children as they run around the continent together causing havoc and try to accomplish their goal of collecting all the divine artifacts. It's so great seeing them have fun, and go on all these quests.
And truly, this story evokes such strong feelings within me.
One moment you're laughing your ass off at whatever ridiculous thing is happening, and the very next moment you might be thrown into the unveiling of a whole mystery. The shift of genres and tones that occur throughout the novel is so well balanced, and it gradually builds up so that at the pivotal moment the author requires it, you as the reader get hit with the accumulation that had been building over several chapters, and you can only sit there in tears and wonder 'why and how the hell is this been described as a "feel-good novel"?'
Sookym is truly amazing, to be able to write buildups that manage to land so impactfully, and bring to life characters who are so endearing you can't help but earnestly root for their success as they try and achieve their goals and get through obstacles throughout the way.
The day the webtoon adaptation gets officially announced, I don't think I exaggerate when I say I will be crying whilst reading the 1st chapter, knowing just all the adventures and trials these characters will have to face in the future TvT It is such a wonder rollercoaster of a read, and I adore it so much haha.
In the meantime, I will continue to draw fanart and write fics in hopes of dragging more people into reading this novel that I hold so dear :')
With all that said, thanks for the ask! I hope this was able to convey to you even a fraction's bit of my love for this novel! Forgive me if theres any typos audhjdksks I had a lot to say so this took me a while haha 😂 and I hope youre enjoying the novel, if ever you decide to give it a go!

'Demon': Prologue ♡ BakugouXFem!Reader (Book 1)
Alright I'm doing it.
I'm doing the thing.
It literally keeps me awake at night I gotta write thisss *cough* okay
Tumblr media
Originally I was only going to post this unto Wattpad, but getting traction on their website is a little more difficult than good ole' Tumblr, so I'll be posting it on both. Feel free to visit my Wattpad here: LINK if you want to support my writing on that end. (I would so appreciate it)
This post is going to run pretty long, as it will host both the prologue of the story and my author's notes. Just a heads up.
Summery:
A slow-burn action/romance where you begin in the bowels of a Villain base and rise up to join U.A.'s top Hero Class. This life was your choice. In the event of learning then losing the love of a friend, you make a decision that changes your reality at the core--to become an imposter among villains and bring them down from the inside out. The organization that ruined your premature perfect life was known as H.H., after their leader Head-Honcho. His crime of choice: intelligence. Training and conducting espionage agents and assassins across Japan as a means to further the dark underground network. Your training began at thirteen, after managing to impress the multi-faced villain with your stealth and your conviction. Rumors would soon spread through the dark alleys of Naruhata City of a masked assassin known as Demon, whose bare face could steal the souls of her targets. Everything appears to be going to plan; but the Hero Agencies you've been slipping information to are calling for an end to your superior sooner than you had anticipated. Your time as 'Demon' is limited. What will happen when your world comes crashing down? Where will you go, when everything you had known you helped to destroy?
AUTHOR'S NOTES
This is a slow burn fan-fic; and I am not italicizing those words without reason. This is going to be an agonizingly slow action-packed adventure-romance. This is a self-insert story, just like my three-part series 'Some Combat Training' (link) where you as the protagonist will not be described outside of being female, general physique, and a generalization of your uniform(s). Skin, hair, eyes, etc. will not be described at all--besides ambiguous adjectives. That said, I am taking liberties with physique and stature due to the nature of the story. You're abilities rely on stealth as well as close and fast combat, therefore you are described as 'small', 'lithe', 'athletic', and all of those other fancy little ninja woman words. Your personality has been shaped by the events of your life and the people within it; but if I were to describe it I would choose words like: Intelligent, determined, self-sacrificing, quiet, humble, and studious. The story will follow along with the anime for the most part starting at around the time of the USJ event, though at some point the story will branch off and become more my original concoction. (Such as, fast-forwarding the time-line to when the characters are older.) Some information about you as the protagonist will not be written here, as I plan for those to be revelations within the story. There will be angst, blood and gore, adult-humor, trauma, death, bad language and warnings will be listed with each chapter as needed. Feel free to comment on those chapters as soon as you see something that isn't mentioned that might make someone (if not yourself) feel uncomfortable. I will not be offended. This story is meant to get a little dark. Please comment if you can about your opinions! I have never posted an on-going fic before, and anything you have to say I would appreciate! <3 Now, please enjoy this short prologue~ Chapter 1 is being reviewed and edited, to be release very soon! 👹🖤⛓🔪💣 ...four...five...six.. You counted the footsteps behind your left ear, round the corner of the dim abandoned subway. You'd been stationary; still so long that your digits had all but numbed. Turn... one...two...three... The footsteps were distancing from the hall your attention had been set upon. A T-section, where the entity had gone down and away from your destination. You had to cross that 'T' to get to the junction--where you needed to leave a note completely undetected. The slightest mis-step would lead to suspicion. Suspicion would lead to investigation. Investigation lead to the five percent chance they could find that note--and no percentage was too small. It all hinged on absolute perfection. Nine...ten...eleven... This was their fifth round. A patrol. You had to make sure their movement were predictable before this would work--despite having successfully delivered the note fourty-two times and counting--you did not have the luxury of assumption. Only if their stride was even, only if you absolutely knew they were moving at a certain pattern, could you depend on the following information: It took fifteen steps before they would reach the broken light on their route. The haze of the dust and pollutants reflected in the working lights prior to that was your cover. Cross the 'T', leave the note, and cross it again. Out of sight and out of earshot, mission successful. Fourteen... f-- You turn, and it takes three steps to arrive at the drop to the tracks. You bunch and leap, and even the quietest friction of fabric from your uniform creases your brow. You land, just outside of the light's reach on the thin concrete slab beyond. Your eyes track the metals, the jutting wall tiles; that with which the barest touch could emit a sound--and you maneuver around them. Under, creeping low--and over, leaping to land on the balls of your feet and checking your balance before moving forward. Careful to not cast a shadow into the hall. Paced, so as not to move too quickly nor too slowly. Counting, because every second was controlled and calculated. You reach the juncture, and once again
edging the light you propel yourself to land back on the main thoroughfare. The next obstacle--removing the loose brick. Behind a metal bench centered between two closed-in stair cases, where the tile meets what had once been a decorative brick mosaic; eight bricks right and eighteen bricks up, was your note's destination. Just above your head, where you had to bend at an awkward angle to reach. Not practical, less detectable. You're wearing tight fabric gloves with grips on the pads, but thin enough you can feel the texture of the brick as you gently lace your fingers at each of the corners. Lifting, centering, and pulling the brick from its slot. Holding it just right, you can avoid the loud scrapes and grinds--but you have to hold it perfectly centered. Success. In goes the note. As does the brick, back into the wall. But you're only half-way done. Leap. Quiet, maneuver, avoid, measure. Silent. Leap. Hide. You're back is once again at the wall, the footsteps of the lackey you'd been avoiding closing in proximity to the Hall you'd just left. Four... five... six... Your eyes focus on the wall opposite of you as you ground yourself. The next few seconds determined a new reality. Either they followed their pattern, or they didn't. You had to be flexible. No assumptions. If they move towards the junction, you have to follow. If they move towards you, you'd calculate on your feet. Seven... eight... nine.. Turn. ...one...two...three.. You don't relax. Even after you count their steps to fifteen, even as you slip away back through the hall, even as you exit the unattended vent and breathe in fresh air--you don't relax until you're sitting on the floor in your room, calming down, your mask in your hands. After checking to make sure your door had not been opened, and no one had looked for you. No tracks in the dust. Only then do you allow yourself to ruminate on the contents of the note you had written, because you could still see every letter of it in your mind. ------ 55-1, Minami Senju 5-chome, Musutafu Target: Fukui Mitsuo Floor 8 3 AM. 7. Accompanied. Head. ------ For the briefest moment, you feel your hands shake. They always did on these nights. Realistically, you'd left no openings. Tested and re-tested every method. Calculated every movement. Left nothing to chance. But the 'what-if's' still linger, and you let them. The fear is good. It keeps you on your toes, your mind on edge, your tongue to the roof of your mouth. If he found out, you wouldn't know it until it was over. So you pretended he already did. Below you, underground in his base, plotting how to get at you when you were most vulnerable. Tear you to pieces, throw you in a pit or in a cage. No--too risky, he'd just kill you. A dead-end is better than a possibility. You'd learned that from him. You swallow, head turning so the amber morning sky is in your peripheral. All things considered, you would still unfortunately need sleep. You cherished the brief moments of sunlight and let your mind swim in the memories of your childhood spent in the daytime; before retiring to the broken and borrowed mattress. Seven days. You would check the location of your note in two. If there is another note in response, you would create a reactionary plan. The pattern continues. Until he finds out. ...Until he finds out.

Downsides of Thievery Pt. 9
~ Previous Part ~ Next Part ~
After departing from the stream, it only took about fifteen minutes before Rael and his passenger reached the edge of Ostrad. The moment they broke through the treeline, Rael was greeted by the familiar sight of home.
Despite being the location in which the Emperor resided, Ostrad was not the largest city in the realm. This was due in large part to the fact that the city had originally only been built as a secondary residence for the Emperor. However, over a century ago a flood in the former Imperial Capital had forced it to be relocated to Ostrad.
That being said, looking from Gavin to the bustling city that loomed ahead of them, Ostrad looked positively massive. A slight frown tugged at the corners of Rael’s lips. The most direct route to the palace was straight through town, down the main boulevard and up to the main gates. However, going that way would require walking past a great many alteons. With so many people around, there was a high risk of accidents happening, whether intentional or not.
Having spent his youth running up and down the streets of Ostrad, Rael was quite familiar with its layout. He created a mental image of the city in his mind, mapping out the different potential routes they could take. After several moments of deliberation, he decided on a path that snaked along beside the outer wall. Such a route was more winding and less direct than going straight through the city, but it would decrease their chances of encountering other alteons significantly. After the encounter with Kaydin, Rael was simply not ready to subject Gavin to the possibility of being grabbed again.
Rael glanced down at his hands. He was surprised the human had kept quiet for so long and not interrupted Rael’s contemplation once. The reason became quite clear as he noticed Gavin staring at the nearby city with wide eyes. “Right, this is his first time seeing any kind of alteon civilization.”
Gavin’s expression was a mixture of shock, awe, and fear--which Rael supposed was a reasonable reaction. Even putting the size aside, the architecture was likely entirely foreign to the human. The structures in the human city Rael had seen had certainly seemed very different from alteon craftsmanship.
As if he could feel Rael’s gaze on him, Gavin looked up. “It’s like I got transported into a medieval movie,” he breathed in disbelief.
Rael blew out a soft sigh, the breeze ruffling Gavin’s crop of brown hair. “I don’t know what that means,” he told the human. Both the words “medieval” and “movie” were foriegn to him. He assumed they weren’t important words, considering he hadn’t learnt them during his study of human language.
“Oh right,” Gavin said with a light chuckle. “Nevermind then.” Although he appeared to be making an effort to hide it, Rael suspected the sight of the city had caused some nervousness to develop in Gavin. The little guy’s energy levels seemed slightly lower than they had earlier.
“Alright,” Rael carefully moved the hand holding Gavin up a bit so he didn’t have to tilt his head down so much to look him in the eye. “I’m going to take you around the edge of the city,” he began. “Our chances of running into anyone are low, but I’m going to keep you hidden from sight anyways.” While it wasn’t necessarily a secret that a human was being brought to the Emperor, Rael considered it safer if no one even laid eyes on Gavin until they were safely ensconced in the palace.
“I guess there’s not gonna be a parade held in my honor then,” Gavin joked, mock disappointment in his tone.
Rael shook his head. Not even the human diplomats and politicians that had visited the palace received any sort of celebratory welcome. “Consider yourself lucky you’re even getting to ride in my hands rather than the cage,” he snipped.
-
If Gavin had thought he’d been being smothered before, the situation he was in now was on a whole other level. He still sat in the center of Rael’s palm, but now his entire view of the outside world was obscured. Rael’s free hand caged Gavin in against the giant chest, leaving him in the dark except for the small slivers of light that filtered in between the massive fingers.
While Gavin was effectively trapped, he knew the action wasn’t hostile this time. In fact, it was actually meant to be for his own good. That wasn’t to say Gavin was happy with the arrangement. Despite how intimidating it had been, he had kind of wanted to take in the sights of the alteon city. Though, after the encounter with Kaydin, he could understand Rael’s reasoning for wanting to keep him hidden.
“God, I don’t think I’ve been this close to someone else in...well who knows how long,” Gavin thought to himself. He wasn’t really opposed to physical contact, in fact he had a tendency to maybe be a little bit too handsy at times. However, most of his friends and acquaintances were opposed to physical contact, and so would throw Gavin off whenever he greeted them with an overenthusiastic hug or overzealous handshake.
Now all of a sudden he was being effectively cradled by a literal giant. Gavin ran a hand down his face. How the hell had his life gotten so goddamn weird? Of course, his life was bound to be pretty unconventional as soon as he chose stealing as a career path--but come on, this was beyond bizarre.
“There’s a couple people up ahead, keep quiet,” Rael ordered in a hushed voice.
The urge to scream at the top of his lungs in order to freak out the alteons was quite strong for Gavin. He could only imagine the looks on their faces would be priceless as they tried to figure out who or what had made the noise when Rael’s mouth obviously hadn’t moved. But as funny as that would be, the risk of another Kaydin situation was too great. Not to mention the fact that he would no doubt incur Rael’s wrath. Although, that might actually be funny in its own right…
Suddenly he heard an unfamiliar woman’s voice say something that sounded kind of like a greeting.
Rael gave a perfectly polite, but perfectly simple reply. He slowed his pace ever so slightly, but never came to a stop. Gavin was just fine with that, he wasn’t really interested in having to listen in on small talk while stuck in Rael’s hands.
As they got closer and closer to the palace, the reality of Gavin’s situation was beginning to slowly set in. Surviving the journey to the palace had proven to be a challenge in and of itself, so much so that he hadn’t really stopped for long to consider what was waiting for him when he finally reached his destination. He knew his fate was entirely in the hands of this dimension’s emperor, but he hadn’t the slightest idea what kind of fate that might be. “I’m a criminal being brought in to be judged for a crime, it’s not like whatever it is is going to be good,” Gavin reminded himself solemnly.
“Do you guys have a rule against cruel and unusual punishment here?” Gavin asked Rael, his voice just loud enough to be heard by the giant.
“You’re supposed to be keeping quiet,” Rael immediately scolded, sounding more exasperated than actually angry.
“Is there anyone around right now?” Gavin inquired.
“No, but--”
“Then please just answer the question.” Gavin didn’t like the way his voice sounded, notes of anxiety and fear were obvious in it. Rael was perceptive, he would undoubtedly pick up on it, even if Gavin had spoken very quietly.
There was a long pause. Gavin began to wonder whether Rael planned to just ignore the question and remain silent, but then, “There aren’t rules for punishments, there are precedents.” Rael spoke so quietly Gavin doubted an alteon standing right beside them would be able to discern the words. “The current emperor is known for his fair but firm sentences,” Rael explained. “But you will be the first human he has ever judged, so it’s difficult to predict exactly what he might decide.”
Gavin didn’t really know what to make of that. He supposed it was good to hear that the Emperor wasn’t known for being sadistically cruel. However, the fact that Gavin would be the first human to ever be sentenced in this dimension wasn’t exactly encouraging. What if the Emperor wanted to make an example of him--to send a message to all humans that going against alteons was a horrible mistake?
“There’s no use fretting over it,” Rael whispered. Gavin knew he was right, and normally worrying about things he couldn’t control wasn’t really his style. Rolling with the punches was a part of being a good thief. But with so many unknowns in front of him, Gavin was having a hard time not letting his worst fears intrude upon his mind.
-
Honestly, Gavin’s question had thrown Rael off guard. He himself had been pondering what the future might hold for the human, but he hadn’t really stopped to think about how the weight of the unknown might be weighing on the little man himself.
At the start, the fate that might await the human criminal hadn’t mattered much to Rael. Whether Gavin was imprisoned for life, kept as the Emperor’s pet, or simply slapped on the wrist--it hadn’t mattered to him. All he’d been concerned with was delivering the human to the palace and getting the unwanted assignment over with.
Things had changed. Now Rael found himself feeling almost...nervous about what the Emperor might decide. After all, now he knew that Gavin wasn’t the one truly at fault for stealing from the diplomat. He had been nothing more than a pawn. Of course, the Emperor didn’t know that. “Should I...should I try to tell him?” he asked himself. However, he was quick to dismiss that thought. Speaking out of turn to the Emperor was a sure fire way to damage his reputation, which was something Rael simply couldn’t allow.
“I’ll just have to trust the Emperor's judgement,” Rael told himself. The ruler of the realm seemed a wise and just man. Despite being fairly young for his position, the Emperor had already made a name for himself as one of the best rulers the realm had ever seen. Surely Rael could trust him to make the right decision regarding Gavin.
It was just then that one of the servant’s entrances into the palace came into view. The door, typically used by cooks, maids, and other domestic servants, was always guarded by a single soldier. Today, the guard was familiar to Rael, but he didn’t know the woman well enough to know her name.
“Returning from an assignment?” the guard asked, apparently recognizing him as a member of the Imperial Guard despite his lack of uniform. She seemed confused as to why Rael would use this entrance rather than one of the ones specified for the Imperial Guard, but it didn’t appear as though she was going to press for information.
Rael nodded. “Yes, that is correct,” he replied. All of the palace guards were aware a human would be arriving soon, but this woman clearly didn’t realize that she was speaking to the one who had been tasked with retrieving said human.
“Welcome back then, head on in,” she said with a polite smile. Rael was thankful she didn’t ask about the specifics of his assignment, he really wasn’t in the mood to explain it all to her, nor was he eager to show Gavin to her. Despite now being at the palace, Rael, for whatever reason, preferred to keep Gavin hidden as long as possible.

Cure your boredom by finding something new! Enter the world of art and stories combined! Find the story to obsess over, only here on WEBTOON! Hold on, let me just shake out all the interpretative literary devices I had from my previous articles... There, much better! Welcome back to your favorite bunny—Nikki’s Tumblr blog! It feels a bit different here compared to when I am on Amino, to be honest. Yes, when I formally write without too many literary devices, my blogs smoothen like this, like it was polished with sandpaper or something. Anyway, I loosen up in order to display my love for something I’d like to offer to this world—one of those precious gems that have not been excavated in the realm of fandoms. Today, in this article, let’s enter the world of Webtoons and figure out 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙒𝙀𝘽𝙏𝙊𝙊𝙉 (𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙒𝙚𝙗𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙣𝙨) 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧!
Oh, hold on your horses! You’re asking what do I mean by Line Webtoons? My apologies for not explaining that before I bring you along this own carpet ride. To begin with this sudden class session, webtoons are webcomics that have a vertical reading format. In Korea, “manhwa” is often something you’d hear when the locals there refer to comics. These webtoons originated from South Korea, and now, they are rebranded by different companies with their hit titles. One of those brands is Naver Webtoon, and internationally, it is known as Line Webtoons. In 2019, it has now become WEBTOON, for short! Korean webtoons that are from Naver Webtoon have been officially translated into English, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Thai, Spanish, French, and German languages in the present. At the same time, all these countries of the world wide web get to also be webtoon creators, too!
Comics are a mix of art and writing in multiple panels. Though unlike those readable from right to left, or the complete opposite of that, webtoons take advantage of vertical scrolling to reveal shocking key plot points and add more aesthetic in the blooming & stunning art they provide to the audience. They don’t upload once a month or year—in WEBTOON, there’s always something to read daily! Most WEBTOON series upload once a week, depending on its creator. As a reader, you’ll surely enjoy the vast options of webtoons to choose from reading at your own pace. There are many interesting genres, art styles, character designs, pairings, story lines, and themes to look forward to. The best part is, 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨, 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚! There’s a perfect story to dwell into for all kinds of people, so if you’re curious in knowing how to begin reading, let’s go ahead and jump into the app!

The first step to get started with WEBTOON is approaching its services, first! You If you haven’t encountered WEBTOON yet, you could either take a little peak behind its digital pages online. I recommend downloading the app to enjoy the WEBTOON experience to the maximum level. If your first language is not English, perhaps a more comfortable version of the app made for your location fortunately exists! Search for WEBTOON on the playstore, and you will spot the application in a flash. It is only 21 MB or megabytes big, so it is not painful to the phone storage.
However, if you want to save space, you can always take the other route and access the WEBTOON site here. You can search for WEBTOON on your device’s browser, and the link you see immediately will lead you to the destination you desire to land onto. The site is mostly used by personal computer users and those who cannot download the app. It functions the same way as the app, but not all the features, events, and other cool activities can be done here. So, I still suggest to head over to your device’s playstore to get the application!

Any app would instruct the user to create an account to use its services. For WEBTOON though, this is very worth it, for it gives you a chance to use your account to comment on WEBTOON episodes you adore, or subscribe to the series you want to follow and support. You can create an account using your email address and the password to access it personally. Just the same as any other process in signing-up for an account, you will type your own username. You could also your very own Facebook, Twitter, Google, or LINE account to enter, and your name on the site you’ve chosen to log-on with will become your name on WEBTOON.
It is editable, so don’t worry if your username so happened to be humiliating, and you absolutely must change it! Though, if you don’t want to create an account just yet, users can view webtoons with a press of a finger without signing up for anything, if you’d press the return key on your phone or if you’re browsing on the site. Once you submit your approval that you’ve read and understood the Terms of Use & Privacy Policy of WEBTOON, you can finally set foot on the real fun of webtoons!

Okay, do not get confused! We’ll get to the rest of the areas of the app in a little bit! There’s a lot of things to do, now that we’ve finally arrived on WEBTOON platform itself. Though before being hyped at the things you are seeing right now, I’d like you to scroll down to the bottom of this “For You” section, and dig up the “Find your series” questionnaire to answer it. This is so that you can have an idea of what to expect here on WEBTOON, as well as what to read first. This is a questionnaire that will also introduce you to stories that you’d enjoy, without getting totally overwhelmed with content to stretch out into. No pressure in choosing, it will not affect how your account is set-up! Don’t worry about the results either. Answer as natural and honest as you can! This step is only applicable to those who are on the WEBTOON application. It is also optional to the reader, specifically if they are already used to reading webcomics and know what to expect.
Once you enter, it’d ask what are the genres you like. There is horror, comedy, thriller, fantasy, drama, romance, superhero, slice of life, action, and sci-fi. To clarify, slice of life does not literally mean a splitted life! It is a genre for stories that showcase the everyday life of a person, that are either relatable or engaging to read about. Choose as many genres as you want—it’s totally fine to check everything, or to choose one specific genre. Then, you can choose which art styles you prefer from the choices you see in front of your screen. Again, don’t worry about picking art styles—this is not a critical survey! Go ahead and pick many art styles you find pleasing to the eye. Then, you’ll get a list of webtoons recommended to you by the WEBTOON management! Easy, right?
You can take note of these titles given to you, or you can press on the webtoons you find interest in, and you will be taken to the webtoon’s contents in a jifty. That’s where you can read the description of the title’s plot, and you can instantly start reading if it strummed your heartstrings. You can continue discovering more stories to read from here, since the freedom is yours. Even so, there are still parts of the application to discuss that may give you an extra hand later on. Stick around this article for more of that, especially when you need an enthusiatic tour guide like me!
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓸: 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀” 𝘁𝗮𝗯.
If you’re still following me, you may exit the questionnaire that you entered into a while ago. Now, if you scroll up, we’re back seeing graphics moving sideways at the front page. Oh, did you something catch your eye there? These graphics that WEBTOON fans usually call as “banners” (or, for me, personally—anyway,) are another way to gain interest in choosing stories to read. Long story short, when I became a WEBTOON reader, my all-time favorite webcomic from WEBTOON was first shown to me on a banner. (A very epic one, too!) Most of the webtoons shown here are in the “Originals” tab! From “For You,” press the Originals tab next. These are the tenths of webtoons that you can also read here on WEBTOON. The image is just one section of that. If you can observe, there are the seven days of the week stated at the top of these webtoons, under the word, “Daily.” You might be asking why is this section called, “Originals.” All these webtoons found under this tab are in partnership with the WEBTOON management, and these stories release new episodes weekly!

That simply means that the creators of these webtoons are working together with WEBTOON to share their stories with us, and what’s the best thing? They get to tell their stories, while fulfilling their dream full-time job as a paid webcomic creator! Their work is now known as “WEBTOON ORIGINALs,” though before, they used to be “Featured Webtoons.” Everyday, various webtoons of different genres update with new parts to continue the story from where they left off previously, so there’s definitely something to look forward to from Mondays to Sundays. There are also more choices here than those in the questionnaire, so if you weren’t contented with what you got from answering questions, you can also come here to pick out stories. There are also webtoons under “Completed,” and we’ll get to those in a bit. If you’d ask me what I usually do on Originals, I read everything in general, so I never run out of things to read, but I’m more fond of fantasy genres. You can also choose webtoons from all days of the week, so you can keep reading something everyday before going to school or work, or perhaps, when you’re about to sleep.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓹: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀” 𝘁𝗮𝗯.
Now, there must be another question in your head. “How are these webcomic creators chosen to be featured, or have their work included under WEBTOON ORIGINALs?” There are a couple of ways, though, we’ll focus on this canvas of ideas for this article. Usually, creators are discovered on the fan submissions area of the application. Yes, you heard me right! If you are someone who loves drawing comics as well, then you can give this opportunity a shot and meet other aspiring creators here on “Canvas!” So, let’s move from the “Originals” tab and head straight into the “Canvas” section. The webtoons here are under the word, “Spotlight.” It’s simply because these webtoons are uploaded by other webcomic creators who are not affiliated by WEBTOON, yet. So, you could say that this is the wider scope of webtoons to look through. The best thing about “Canvas” which used to be “Discover,” is the fact that we can support these writers and/or artists by reading their stories.
WEBTOON is a platform perfect for people to test the waves of being a webcomic creator. At the same time, they are given the chance to gain a community of a readers that you could also be a part of! However, since these webtoons labeled as “CANVAS WEBTOONs,” are not fully paid by WEBTOON, there is no guarantee that they’ll upload episodes every week. They are free to upload on their own running schedule, but in return, they are also free to create any story they like, as long as it follows the WEBTOON guidelines. Just a brief heads-up, you must have a computer or laptop, in order to upload your own webcomic on WEBTOON. For us readers, it’s a big chance for us to find stories we’ll fall in love with—the one that will make us invested and devoted to how the story continues. If you give the CANVAS WEBTOON more support, who knows? You might be a part of their life accomplishment journey to doing what they love for a living. Very heartwarming, I see.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓺: 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
We’ve already seen all the webtoons that the app has to offer to us. Despite that, there’s a chance that you still don’t know what stories pique the elements you like in a plot. Now that you know that there are more webtoons to search for on the WEBTOON app, you might need a guide or factor to know what’s the best story to try out. This is why the rankings and genre sections exist on the app! You can view the rankings of WEBTOON ORIGINALs and CANVAS WEBTOONs in their respective tabs. For ORIGINALs, you can click on the badge-like icon to the top right, while in CANVAS, you can see the rankings immediately. If you want to see the complete rankings list for CANVAS WEBTOONs, pressing the arrow at the right side of the rankings preview will do the trick! This step is for users who cannot decide based on what gem of a webtoon preview has caught their attention. If you'd like to find out what webtoons are popular overall, or in their corresponding genres, be sure to use this feature to weigh the odds. We are people who are influenced by whatever is loved by many, after all.

If ten genres weren't enough choices during the questionnaire, well, thankfully there is more to play with! In the genre sections of both types of webtoons on WEBTOON, which you can see alongside the rankings, you can also view webtoons listed under the supernatural, mystery, sports, historical, heartwarming, and informative genres! So, in total, there are 16 genres to step into, and that's a plenty! In that said area, you can tell which genres have the best stories based on how many people read each webtoon. You can also sort these webtoons by interests, likes, or date. Just press the "Genres" button next to the "Daily" or "Spotlight" text on either tabs. The "sorting the webtoons by interests" option would depend on what your account has read, so far. These features are really handy to introduce to you new webtoons to take your eyes on or pay attention to.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓻: 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗠𝘆” 𝘁𝗮𝗯.
I suppose you've already chosen a webtoon to read, or maybe you're already into collecting webtoon titles to remember reading. Regardless, let's make things a little easier. You'd need your account, first! If you haven't created one yet, head to the log-in page and go back to Step No. 2. Catch up here when you're done, alright? If you’re already here, let me take you a stroll around this “My” tab. This section has list of features that are for the account’s convenience and personalization. It tells you what webtoons episodes have you recently read, downloaded, commented, and unlocked. It also states what webtoons have you subscribed to. Oh, yes, you can do all these things for your favorite stories on WEBTOON! To try that out, go to your chosen webtoon to read. As a reader, you are given the chance to rate the webtoon from 1 to 10—whether it is an ORIGINAL or CANVAS-type. That also makes heads turn away or stare closer at the stories, to see if they are worthy of their time.
Just like how subscriptions work on Youtube or any other platform, subscribing to a webtoon with your account means that you’ll get notifications whenever it uploads. It’s also easier to access subscribed webtoons through the “My” tab, instead of continously searching for your favorite stories all over the application or site as if you’re in a never-ending maze. You can track down the episodes you’ve downloaded for offline use as well, which comes in great situations where wifi is not available. Be aware that downloaded episodes will remain on your account for 30 days only, however. After 30 days, you may download the episodes again. Commenting on episodes can give you interaction with other readers’ ideas—those reactions, arguments, discussions, and, well! You could even talk about romantic pairing wars and all that’s fizzling in the premise of the story. With this section of the app, your account will be able to be fit and active, while it gives access to more parts of WEBTOON—including the possession of fast pass coins to unlock episodes for early reading! Wait a minute. Why must we, and how do we do that?

Fast pass on WEBTOON allows you to read episodes before they are publicly released. In other words, you can gain early access to your most awaited ORIGINAL WEBTOONs’ episodes, especially when they get on that gripping cliffhanger that makes you want to go crazy with what happens next! The question is, how can we use fast pass? We can do that with coins called, “fast pass coins.” This in-app currency will permit you to avail one fast pass episode every five coins. In order to get coins, however, there is real money transactions involved. Though, do not fret, because you do not need to spend a dime or a single peso over buying fast pass episodes! WEBTOON offers users to gain five or more fast pass coins through events in the app.
These vary from having to log-in in 7 days, or read similarly themed webtoons that are featured per event. It’s free to do, though, they do not come by all the time—events do not run forever, after all. So, take on the challenge when it arrives, and get yourself some fast pass episodes to enjoy! One benefit in taking part in fast pass coins events is reading new stories that you’ve never tried peaking into before, because who knows when will it become your top webtoon choice in the future? Take it for me—one webtoon became my favorite when the first fast pass coins event entitled, “Climb the Tower challenge,” occured. I participated and had climbed 100 episodes, and now here I am chilling with floors and betrayal!
If you haven’t asked, all fast pass coins given to each webtoon will have a part of its value given to the creators of the said stories. In other words, it’s like directly supporting the artists, writers, and creators of the stories you love! This step can only be done to ORIGINAL WEBTOONs. CANVAS WEBTOONs do not have fast pass, though its creators can provide Patreon accounts where fans can donate or give thanks for their eloquent and awesome stories to tell.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓽: 𝗗𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.
Remember when I mentioned “completed” webtoons prior to this step? It’s interesting that there also webtoons that have ended, so there is a section for WEBTOON ORIGINALs that have ended in the “Originals” tab. Here, you can still binge-read completed webtoons for as many times you want to, and you can also gain a collection of read finished webtoons on your proud wall. The satisfaction is there when you finish a story—but, wait a minute. We are familiar with fast pass, now, what’s up with this daily pass? For some completed webtoons, they are readable with the daily pass feature. This makes a webtoon’s episodes first episode public for reading, but the twist is, to read the next episodes, you must come back everyday to continue. Episodes in the middle until the end of the story are locked, and can only be carried on if you’ve lended a daily pass entry for it to be opened for a limited time. Then, you can access the next episodes in the following days. Tedious as it may be, you could also pay for fast pass coins to read these specific completed webtoons quicker.
However, if your route is free reading, it is also a fulfilling experience to follow a story as if it was still uploading everyday, instead of reading it in one sitting. This is the patience, yet satisfaction, that can be acquired from daily pass. That is also the goal of WEBTOON for implementing such a feature to their application. You don’t have to pay for anything if you don’t want to speed up your time in reading. This step is definitely for you, if you’re already reading ongoing webtoons, but want to find more stories in the completed section. Trust me, the stories we got here with the daily pass feature were real hits back in the day—somehow, the dust on their covers will be swept away when you touch it. It’s worth it, so why not give it a shot? I heard that one completed webtoon here was recently adaptated into an anime, another has been published physically, while the other was given a live-action K-drama on Netflix! Let’s see if you can figure out which stories these are!
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓾: 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗻𝘀!
So, once you’ve found your beloved webtoons, fully invested into them with your account, made use of fast pass, and indulge into daily pass, the only thing left to do to begin on WEBTOON is to stick to it! Keep being a WEBTOON reader, and enjoy as many webtoons as you’d like. As you keep being on the application or site, you will encounter more features of WEBTOON, and maybe, as you stick around, more surprises & stories will be coming your way. There’s the fan translation area to explore, where you can translate the webtoons you’d love to support and be a contributor to its spread to other languages. There are thousands of CANVAS WEBTOONs being promoted in the front page for explorers to uncover reading. Spotlights at the bottom of the front page compile webtoons together, and you’d get to see more webtoons that may be under the spotlighted theme you adore!
You will be a part of this passionate WEBTOON community, and I’d like to thank you if you keep engaging into this craft as a reader. WEBTOON is a group of people who loves comics, and webcomics alike. It’s a place where creators and readers get to connect, at the same time, reach for their dreams. This is where their imaginations sprint wild—the happiness, sadness, anger, fear, worry, doubt, cheer, and excitement at every panel scrolling down your devices. You will be joining along with its growth, as well as all webcomic creators trying out on the platform, that WEBTOON sincerely cares for, wherever or whoever they are. You can witness how its stories will not only become panels and dialogue, but also animation, live-action, physical books, and other media types all around the world.
Do continue finding the captivating dialogue for you in WEBTOON, because for sure, it will become the message you will hold onto for life. Dramatic Nikki aside, thank you very much for reading this article! I had a blast—almost like I was going to be blasted on a rocket ship to Mars, while I was writing this feature. I hope my steps were able to help you get started on WEBTOON, and I’d like to bid you all the best on your personal voyage here. I believe each story of how we became attached to something is very significant, so take this moment to make it a memorable event in your life. Once more, thank you for reading! Come back again in another blog in the unknown future, where my fantasies become realities! A Nikki reminder: don’t just be ordinary when everyone is doing wrong—be unORDINARY, right & just, and continue to climb without holding back!

(Made up bit heavily inspired by bit with much much better women’s rights) In England late mediveal or early renaissance time, how would I put a bridge on a very large and wide river that large ships like cogs and big carraks can get under? I’d like to keep to that time period as closely as possible (but with different women’s rights) but I realised I need big carraks and cogs to go up a river I need many bridges on. Would swing bridges do? What would those be made of in those times? Stone?Wood?
eGood to know! Presuming a world without magic...if it's late medieval / early renaissance, just use drawbridges.
Understand that your boats will have to be smaller than most seagoing vessels. However, that doesn't mean they cannot be quite useful, and it doesn't mean they cannot be sailboats; they can! They just need to be more slender and shorter--not just to navigate between the central support pillars for said drawbridges, but also simply to navigate the twists and turns of any river.
This particular scene from the BBC's Edwardian Farm series has an example of just such a boat: https://youtu.be/obIWqJlxniY?t=1030 You should watch it, even though they're actually just discussing using quicklime to neutralize the acidity of the local soils, and how they're importing coal for use in burning in the lime kilns.
The most important feature of the scene for our discussion is how it shows the size of cargo ship that would sail up a slow, calm river. The various boats that sailed up and down the Yangtze River, the Nile, Hudson River, the Mississippi, the gazillion waterways of the Amazon and more, all of these had a lot of river-based commerce. Even the canals of Angkor Wat had a great deal of commerce via boat.
In some cases, such as at Angkor Wat, they would have had stevedores (dockworkers) standing by at bridge causeways that boats couldn't cross. These workers would literally offload cargo from one canal boat, carry it a few yards across the street to the next canal's boat, load it there, and send it on its way along a different canal system. (You'd have to see how the roads and canals at Angkor Wat were built to understand this system.) In other locations, they would have boat-pontoons serving as a floating bridge that could be unlashed and moved out of the way so that cargo ships could cross, and there would often be regular times for these switchups to occur.
But if you're dealing with late medieval / renaissance levels of ingenuity, then winches, gears, capistans, etc, would all be a part of their canal system, with broad, stoutly made drawbridges being drawn up and lowered down at regular points in the day.
Some of these pulley systems could be animal-powered (horse, mule, oxen, whatever), or it could be a wheel that a man would walk along, kind of like a hamster wheel, such as the kind found here: https://youtu.be/s46qP1l39V8?t=628 Though it's a long zoom in, you can see toward the end there are actual humans inside thos wheels, walking slowly to raise and lower whatever needs to get up to the building site. A drawbridge system would be no different.
You can also use folding masts. Since you're not dealing with a specific real-world place-and-time, you can borrow from other eras and traditions, including ancient historical methods, such as the bipod mast: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipod_mast These were used as far back as the 3rd millenium BCE to sail up and down the Nile...which admittedly didn't have bridges to sail under, but the stability of the bipod mast made it easy to lay it down without overbalancing the ship.
With some clever hinges and pulleys and gears, a Renaissance shipmaster could make a system that would allow the sails to be quickly brought down...though to maintain forward motion when going upstream, they'd probably have to pay a lining service a fee to line the ship upstream. Here's an example of how to line a canoe upstream along a river from Far North Bushcraft And Survival: https://youtu.be/ZQ7940-M5mM
This is literally the same system used to maneuver canal barges upstream (and down!), powered by horsepower, literal horses, donkeys, mules, oxen, etc. This particular scene from the Victorian Farm series shows one such canal barge being used to deliver a load of coal, as they would've done in the Victorian era: https://youtu.be/Ccjyt7BQEVU?t=1374 In the scene, they talk about how it's "...a fly boat, going day and night; they change out the horses..." to indicate that these were in constant use. You can see how there's a path built under the bridge for the horse to walk along.
The barge would be manned and steered in most cases, since that's easier than doing it manually by the two-line method, but they'd still probably have two lines on the boat in most instances, in case the helmsman fell asleep, or there was a change in the current, etc. There would also be strict "lanes" for upstream versus downstream traffic, ideally with walkways on each side so as to keep the lines from tangling--this would be in use in areas with really flat slow/sluggish water, not enough room to use galley oars, not enough room to set sails, yet you still want your cargo to head downstream at more than a snail's pace with the natural current (ideal for big cities).
Small barges could also be poled like the gondolae of Venice, but again, that's small barges, since there's only so much effort poling can manage before it becomes nigh impossible not only to get up to speed, but also to slow down to make a turn, to stop, etc. So consider if your river is slow, if it's a series of canals, how many bridges there are, what sort of workforce there might be for loading & unloading, and for portaging.
To portage is to go around an obstacle that a boat (of whatever size) cannot safely manage. The most famous portages were done by the voyageurs of the fur trade in Canada, where they'd come upon a stretch of rapids too dangerous to traverse or have to leave the river they're on to go in the direction they need to get to the next river or lake system, etc. At that point, the fur trappers/canoers would get out, offload their cargo, and carry it and their canoes--sometimes for miles!--to the next navigable stretch of water...and most cases they'd have to set up camp when they got there, then go back for everything that got left behind, and haul all of that to the new spot.
In many cases in the wilderness, they'd leave 1-2 behind to guard said provisions, etc, either at the offloading site or the final destination site. But if you're dealing with a civilized/settled area, they wouldn't necessarily have to do that, but might instead arrange passage with wagoners / caravaners, the people who got paid to transport river-shipped goods between two points overland.
There are also the possibilities for canal locks (the ancient Romans had a precursor to the system we know of today) as well, but it honestly depends on how much that region has decided to put in the effort to dig and construct and manage them. If it's wealthy, has a history of innovation, and/or relies heavily upon river commerce, then it's quite possible. But most likely, drawbridges and folding masts are going to be ideal.
Just remember that those ships and masts are not going to be designed to withstand open-ocean travel or hurricane force winds, nor to carry hundreds of tons. River ships are not going to be the same as ocean or sea going vessels. For example:
"During the time of King Philip II's reign (1556-98), the Spanish galleon increased in size and capacity. For example, while the earlier galleons had capacities for 120 toneladas (Spanish tons), the post-1560 galleons tended to cross thresholds of 330 toneladas." (https://www.realmofhistory.com/2019/06/07/galleon-spanish-warship-facts/ )
Or: "...a typical American barge measures 195 by 35 feet (59.4 m × 10.7 m), and can carry up to about 1,500 short tons (1,400 t) of cargo." (from the entry on Barges, Wikipedia)
These might seem like good resources, but those galleons are oceanic vessels far too large and/or deeply drafted for river navigation, and those barges are modern ones meant for the lower Mississippi River. The latter are also powered by engines, not by wind, oar, or musclepower (animals or humans lining the boat along the riverbank).
Unless your river is huge--at which point ferries will be your ideal method of crossing, rather than bridges--your river-running ships will be small, sleek, relatively shallow drafted, will most likely have collapsing sails, oars for windless days, ropes for lining (even if their own crew has to do it), so on and so forth.
...You can still have bridges without drawbridges, if your river runs through a canyon deep enough that the bridge will clear the masts naturally, or your engineers invest in long, long, long ramps leading up to and over the central arch spanning the deepest part of the river...and invest in lots of riprap (rocks specifically placed for lining the banks of the river to prevent erosion, etc). Unfortunately, most rivers flowing through canyons flow too fast and hard to make good safe transportation routes...and really tall bridges exhaust humans and animals alike in passing over them, so...it's not very likely.
One last consideration: the river itself. Here is a snippet of a video I took when I had the opportunity to go on a Rhein River Cruise (Viking Cruiseline). The cruisehip is docked. It is not moving.
The Rhein really does flow this fast (up near Switzerland, iirc, but all throughout the trip as well), and it only slowed down somewhat at certain points. The banks in the city zones (and even much of the countryside) are lined with riprap (stones fitted and cemented into place to control the river flow and prevent erosion), and yes, there were a few canal locks along the route. A lot of that riprap was laid in earlier centuries, some of it late renaissance (and much of it repaired since then).
We were warned that if there was a lot of rain during our trip (this trip took place in May) causing a lot of runoff to flow into the river, there was a bridge downstream (near the Netherlands) where we might actually have to disembark from this ship literally cross the street for that bridge, and get onto another cruise ship on the downstream side of the bridge. Why? Because if the river level rose too much, this ship would not be able to cross under that bridge.
Now, the ship's top deck was disassembled to pass under other bridges. It literally had awnings and roofs on hinges that could be lowered to as flat as possible...and yet there was still a bridge they knew they couldn't pass under if the river level rose too high. Even with modern tech, etc, there will be obstacles like this.
So consider that for your rivers and your commerce. In spring and autumn, the water might run too high, perhaps even too wild, for safe & easy river travel. Portaging might be the answer. Or your characters might be crossing over the bridge which has an angry river crew arguing with the city guard about why they can't take their ship under the bridge (because it could damage the bridge, it's the wrong season, etc).
...You can also have droughts (oftentimes in high summer) which could cause the river to become too shallow for boats to pass in certain sections, or they'll have to lighten their cargo to avoid getting mired in the mud, etc.
And if your story is set in a region with cold winters, snow, ice, etc...the river might freeze. This poses a whole host of transportation problems, but then transport wasn't often done in the depths of winter, save maybe for foods brought from the storage barns of local farms. If the rivers don't freeze over, water travel is still possible, though hypothermia is still a danger.
If they freeze only a little bit, still possible...but once the ice gets thick along the edges, it becomes dangerous to try to "cut" through the ice with a boat of any size. This can include ice that is too thick to get the boat close enough to shore to exchange cargo and/or passengers, but also the possibility of ice actually damaging a ship's hull.
And of course merely walking on the ice is sheer danger, unless you know exactly what to look for, how deep it needs to be, etc, to be crossed safely--the idyllic picture of the Dutch ice skating along their canals doesn't cover the fact that many people fell through the ice because they hit a stretch that was too thin to support their weight. Certainly history doesn't tell us exactly how many perished, though logic assures us that many surely did--either idiots who didn't check the ice depth, or who were young and recklessly brave enough to be foolhardy, an unexpected warming of the water coming downstream thinning out the ice in a specific spot in the channel, etc, etc, etc.
River boat crews would be aware of such potential dangers, and would not want to travel in icy conditions if it was at all avoidable. Which brings us to living on a riverboat, and how to keep warm in winter when the hull is literally in constant contact with icy cold water...but that's another discussion entirely. If the canals are in constant use, the water "might not" freeze over because it'd be constantly disturbed by the passage of all those boats...but it also could, especially if a bad winter storm shut down travel for a few days.
Mostly, river boats would be lifted out of the water if at all possible before the river iced over (which the locals would know about). Why? Because ice expands, and it would expand horizontally into those hulls, cracking them. Water and ice are incredibly powerful forces that we often underestimate. This means that winter is the time when boats would be brought ashore, tipped onto their sides, the hulls scraped free of river mussels and barnacles and whatnot, sections would be repaired, the hulls re-tarred, and other maintenance issues tended to.
If river commerce slows or stops in the winter due to ice issues, then you'll have wagons and/or sleighs, etc, bringing in the goods...but again, your horses or other draft animals will have a harder time working in cold weather. Your cities will therefore want most of their goods brought into the city's storehouses before winter falls, if it's an area with harsh winters.
If they're just rainy and wet and miserable for the most part (*cough* the greater Seattle region (*cough*)...then flooding will be your biggest concern. If it's a region with seasonal droughts & monsoons...you could have a whole host of problems, but you'd also probably want retention ponds and lakes to help keep the river flowing--fill them up in the stormy season and let out some of that water in the dry season to keep the river at a hopefully passable depth.
Bridges (and drawbridges), boats, and rivers are all part and parcel with the equation.
One more thing, if your local region is building a bridge in the story (a common occurrence in the renaissance in many towns), it doesn't have to be a part of the story directly, but can be mentioned second-hand, like one of your characters can say, "avoid the Baker's Bridge--remember, they're doing repairwork on it."
If this is a thing you want to toss into the story (it makes your town feel alive, a growing and changing thing, without having to go into exhaustive detail), then remember that the architects will have hopefully taken all the shipping and transportation needs into account...but that section of the river or canal will be blocked by scaffolding, requiring everyone to portage around it. If it is a river split in two by an island, or it's a canal shooting off from or paralleling the main river, you'll still be able to have commerce up and down the river, but it will cause that river travel to be thicker and more prone to clogs, blockages, accidents, arguments, etc.
These are little details you can put into your story to give your world more depth without having to go into exhaustive detail.
Good luck, and I hope at least some of that helped!

There's little in the way of franchises and fast food but don’t confuse “doing without” with “going without.” Instead, think of soulful coastal restaurants and interesting mom-and-pop shops. While your setting will be a bit more on the untamed side of nature, accommodations are as modest or modern as you like. The beauty of Hatteras is that you can easily reach all the other OBX hotspots, but call a simpler and quieter part of the barrier islands your home away from home.

FusionFall: Thoughts on the Latest Update
So...guess who played through the whole update in one sitting?
I don’t usually give my thoughts on games themselves--if I do, it’s typically in regards to story and worldbuilding rather than gameplay--but there was so much to unpack with this that I feel like I want to cover some points. Some of this is just my personal thoughts, some of this will be a critique, and some of this--since I do post headcanons, stories, and a few theories--will be in regards to my approach on those now that we’ve been given new information.  As this will contain spoilers, I’m leaving the info below the cut.  That said, let’s begin:
To start out, I’d like to cover progression.  I played with my lvl. 36 character, like I’m sure many of you have/will, and while I can’t speak for anyone playing this and receiving these missions on lower levels--when they’ll be getting other missions and the Nanos they need to level up at possibly the same time--as a result, I felt that the new World Nano missions we were given flowed really nicely.  One thing that is both a gift and a curse with FusionFall is that, while it has vast areas to explore, rather than level up following a singular route like some games, you can do a bit of running around if you don’t stack your missions properly.  Luckily, this doesn’t feel tedious simply because there is so much to explore and thanks to the quick travel system. However, for more experienced players who have already run through everything, I could see this being a little stale.  The newer missions ran a pretty set path within a mostly singular route, so you could run from destination to destination rather than hopping from the different areas in the game.  If they add updates with a similar scale, I hope they continue with this trend.
There were two new locations to explore in the game: Harada-Bridges Records and a digital world.  Both are amazing!!  I’m a sucker for this kind of worldbuilding anyway--I’ve made a huge list of products, stores, etc. in FusionFall and the Cartoon Networks shows just so I can pull them in to my stories rather than use generic stuff--but this took the cake. The team didn’t need to go this far, but they did.  And I love them for it. The record studio had posters for bands and refs to some of the cartoons, it added more to the lore with the Gangreen gang and fleshed them out a bit, and they just looked awesome.  I mean, look at this: The first words out of my mouth on seeing the digital world were literally, “Oh Mama!”
Tumblr media
It’s not anything super complicated, but it has this awesome, almost Tron-like aesthetic that’s  just beautiful.  The glowing walls with shifting colors was a great touch and the enemies fit perfectly into this.
Speaking of enemies, let’s get to them and the new combat introduced. 99% of the time, unless it’s for an event, I play solo. (It’s just what I’ve always done.) And at this point, I’ve gotten pretty good handling the controls for the game if I do say so myself.  Not that they’re overly complicated: Once you remember the buttons and what you need to look out for, you’re pretty golden.
Some of the combat introduced actually surprised me.
The enemies themselves weren’t anything too original, a lot of them we’ve seen before, but some of their abilities will catch you off guard if you’re unprepared.  There’s a fusion monster that splits into two upon death that you have to beat, and then you later have to fight three Fusions at once, some of your Nanos abilities do nothing, and they’re constantly blasting away at you.  I died once to the 3 Fusions, but handled myself pretty well: It did, however, force me to rethink my strategy in a way I never had before, which was refreshing.  I couldn’t even attempt to take on one Fusion at a time in the group by luring one away because all of them reacted, so I ended up having to run around constantly as I was attacking in order to avoid getting bombed by fusion blasts. I like this experiment, as it breaks the old formula and gives the average player a new challenge without becoming frustrating.  I hope the team continues this!
One thing that is frustrating though, and it’s been a problem since before the update, has to do with the fusion matter in Fuse’s Lair. Keep in mind, while I’m fighting three teams of three Fusions one right after the other, I only see one Revive ‘Em all the way at the start on the map, which is huge. (I got a bit frustrated back when I had to battle Fuse because the Revive ‘Em for that was pretty far too, so I constantly kept having to run back to Fuse through a course of fusion monsters and ziplines even though the game was saving my progress during the fight.)  I get that it’s always been a thing when you tackle a boss and it’s a reasonable penalty for the most part, but when you have to go through such a massive location it gets a little ridiculous just to have one.  Especially due to the fusion matter present in the Lair.  Story-wise, it makes perfect sense: You’re in the belly of the beast, so to speak, and in most likely the location with the highest concentration of pure fusion matter on Earth.  However, where this fails in terms of gameplay is that, not only can you step in it and have no idea because everything looks the same, it’s right in the middle of walkways you’re forced to go through or in small patches you accidently step on because again you can’ t see it like in the rest of the game.  It’s a good thing I kept my Grim Tokens for a rainy day, because one tini-tiny patch literally killed me immediately after battling the last trio of Fusions despite the fact that there was no indicator I was standing in it during the fight.  It makes it hard to even find somewhere to stand to recover as you’re going through, and it’s one thing I do hope they fix even if I never have to go back to the Lair myself.
Getting to some of the story/worldbuilding stuff, again, I do love where they’re taking the game.  You can tell these guys aren’t just trying to make random missions for funsies; They’re taking plot development seriously, trying to connect various dots and add a whole new chapter for us to explore.  Of course, you know I already love it, but also, not gonna lie...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m happy that it looks like I was right on the hivemind and symbiotic nature of Fuse with Planet Fusion theories. :)
As for the Belladonna/Buttercup one, I figured I probably wouldn't be right about it back then and, sure enough, the memory-loss idea was kept.  The fact that the team actually brought more to such a minor thing in the game overall pleasantly surprised me though.  While I can’t say I like the take due to the plot holes remaining, it’s not something I pin on the team as it was present in the first version of the game and even one of the devs commented on it being a little off and them needing to change some of the dialogue around it in a YouTube vid. There’s only one negative that I have to say about it and that’s an additional plot hole that was made by introducing “Belladonna” with her own separate Fusion and Nano. If she and Buttercup are one and the same, then it doesn’t really make sense that there’d be another one of her.  Memory loss or no, Buttercup’s still Buttercup and from the information we’ve been given on the creation of Fusions, her Fusion wouldn’t change just because of the amnesia unless maybe they’re going for a split personality route, but even that seems a little weak--especially since we’re shown during the mission that Buttercup maintains fragments of her memories and then she remembers her true identity pretty fast.  I think they’re working with it the best they can without tearing away from the original material though, which I really respect.  I hope we get to see where Buttercup is going in the future now that they’re doing more with her character and giving her a chance to shine.  That mission in particular felt like reading the chapter of a good comic, where you’re snapping at the bit waiting for the next issue to be published.
However, as for my personal stories, I’ll probably still be keeping to the Belladonna/Buttercup ideas that I had before and I’ll still leave the theory up for the sake of that theory, even though it was wrong.  There are some things I’d like to play with for stories.
Well, Fusion Fellas, looks like we’ve got a lot to look forward too and a whole new world to explore!
