What headcannons do you have on Derrick Arden? I saw your post while back. What would've happened in an AU, everything is the same, except Derrick lives? What would he do after graduation? Both as a job and in private?
Been a long time since I've talked about anything Kuroshitsuji related! Sadly, with the amount of pull Derrick has at school, I just don't see him changing if he survived. More than likely, he'll follow a victim mentality where he'd think he's completely innocent and would ignore all the abuse he himself has done to other students leading up to Greenhill attacking him and the vice headmaster. The reason Derrick was able to get away with everything he has throughout his life is because he's never had to face any true consequences for his actions up until that point. His only consequences prior were responsibilities he did not earn and then just passed on to other people. Moreover, however strict his family his, they've apparently never caught Derrick in his lies, so not even his parents will punish him properly. They'll more than likely just back Derrick as "their poor son attacked by four prefects gone mad."
The thing is though, despite what all of these students, and people like them in the real world, think... School isn't everything. It's a closed environment that means absolutely nothing except what you take with you once you step out of it. I once had bully who ruled over my first elementary school because her mom was a teacher. Everyone followed her like a bunch of mindless sheep, but the instant we got to high school, those connections broke. At this same school, I had a lunch monitor that was so vile she wouldn't let anyone, not even a student with Down Syndrome, get up from their table to get a fork if they forgot it: We were basically told to eat with our hands or starve. She was eventually fired, not for those actions, but (according to rumor anyway) because she refused to help a student who needed to use a urinary catheter (which she legally could not do). She had to work at a gas station after that, along with receiving some other karma that is so dark a fate that I don't feel comfortable sharing it online. In a school's hierarchy, people like those two women, or Derrick and the vice headmaster, get on a power trip, but the instant they step away from that environment... they're nobody.
What would Derrick take with him when he'd graduate? Knowledge? He never put any effort into his studies. Connections? He's got his small circle of nobles, but the prefects and Derrick's victims are a much bigger one--not to mention they're a part of other powerful families like the Druitts that could both figuratively and literally bury him without anyone batting an eye. The prefects would more than likely end up expelled after the event, but all that free time would just give them plenty of opportunities to build up a grudge and cook up revenge. And when things get tough, chances are, those so-called friends of Derrick's that are just as morally bankrupt and follow him around for money are going to kick him to the side.
Derrick's a noble and the family heir at that, so it's unlikely he'd go for a traditional job. More than likely, as soon as he got out of Weston, his family would start pushing him into more adult social circles and prepare him to take over as the next Marques. Here though is where the true consequences of his actions would take over. Because with the prefects expelled, they'll have likely already been in those same circles. Even if his social standing wasn't destroyed, barring him and potentially his family as a whole from things like business deals or marriages... Derrick would by no means be fit to run his family's household. He'd either drag his entire family to ruin; end up revealing his lies to his parents, who'd then strip him of his status as the heir; or both. Even if his family still keeps him afloat with their wealth, if he doesn't know how to manage it, he'll still end up destitute or dead.
Could he grow after that? Maybe. People can change. However, given how many people he's hurt and the severity of his actions, it's not easy to say that others would be willing to give him a second chance.

SJ Oneshot: A Demonic Mold
Years of carefully done planning wasted: The world's greatest hope against the immortal monster that was Aku had vanished.
Not dead, just... vanished. If the Emperor's son had been slain, Aku would've made a bigger point to boast than he did—and oh, did he boast. It just wasn't the kind of show he usually put on whenever he removed some thorn in his side. This time, there was no body to put on display. This time, he was vague, nervous even, as if the Shogun of Sorrows himself wasn't completely sure of his own victory.
The Warrior couldn't imagine anyone from the Emperor's bloodline to be the type to turn tail and run, so Aku must've played some trick when the two battled. In any case, the prince was still missing. Aku was still expanding his influence over the whole of the Earth. People like himself were still fighting, holding off the villain's forces which only seemed to grow by the day.
Aku's tower loomed in the distance: A dark, jagged spire that threatened to pierce the heavens. Behind the Warrior stood a thousand more. There was no point in trying to launch a surprise attack by nightfall: It would just give their demonic, shadow-like enemies an advantage. No, he'd catch Aku off-guard some other way. He wasn't exactly bred for combat and he didn't have a magic sword, but he did have his wit. And in the very least, he had to try...
"The men are ready," came a gruff voice from behind, "We'll move out as soon as you give the order, captain."
Biting back fear, the Warrior offered the other a small grin, "Don't call me that..."
"Who else would I call that?" the soldier guffawed in reply, "You're the brains of this operation, remember?"
Yes, and when every last one of them died, he'd have no one to blame but himself. In reality, even he knew that this was a suicide mission. At this point though, they just didn't have any other choice but to fight. And even on the small chance that they did succeed, it was almost assured that most of them wouldn't be around to join in the celebrations...
For not the first time, the Warrior found himself comparing his own shape to that of the men who accompanied him. Most of the soldiers were fierce and loud; big, hulking men that looked like they could snap a tree like a toothpick. Meanwhile, he was that toothpick. The Warrior was tall, toned, but ultimately lanky in appearance. Outside of his gift for strategy, he didn't belong with them.
His only weapon was a long bow, which he now unslung from his waist. He pulled out an arrow wrapped with a tiny, damp cloth on the tip, then ignited it. The Warrior took a deep breath, then fired—launching it into the sky with a parade of sparks.
The army behind him erupted into a roar. The sound was terrifying, like the a massive wave breaking through a ruined dam. However, a part of him had to admit, it was also thrilling. Countless hooves beat the earth as the men and their steeds charged past him, racing on to meet their fates.
Moving with a smaller team, the Warrior circled the main advancement at a distance. For a while, all they could do was lie in wait as their allies clashed with Aku's demonic forces. Then, a break finally appeared closer to the base of the tower.
They made a mad dash for it. He road almost center while the rest of his team took down any enemy soldiers that crossed their direct path. The way inside was blocked, but not shut, so that the next wave could move out when ready. The Warrior quickly fired off an arrow to take down one of the soldiers, then leapt off his horse and raced inside.
The gate's controls sat on a dais not far off. Again, he launched another arrow and the demon guarding it erupted in a haze of smoke as it struck his chest. He raced up the steps and broke the lever, locking the gates in-place.
That took care of Phase One—granted, it was far too easy for him to feel comforted in making it this far. Phase Two involved splitting off even further to locate the Shogun of Sorrows and free any prisoners he might be keeping close-by. For the most part though, his role was done. He wasn't strong enough to join in rest of the fight.
The Warrior leaned his back against the porous wall behind him, his bow nevertheless at the ready. He looked down one of the adjacent passages, its harsh, red light seemingly taunting him where he lurked in the equally oppressive shadows. To his growing wariness, Aku's forces only trinkled out in small numbers, which were swiftly dealt with as their own soldiers closed in. There was no sign of the second wave.
A moment later, he straightened himself back up, shouting down to the others, "I'll scout ahead!"
Without alerting them further, he ventured higher into the tower. He sneakily took out a few more of the demons from a far along his way; however, beyond that, the halls were as eerily bare as the ones below. It could've been that Aku's minions simply spawned out of thin air in the very same vapor they returned to when destroyed. Still, though he did make an attempt to keep himself hidden as much as he could while he progressed, it was as if nothing even truly bothered to register his presence.
At least not until he reached what he thought to be the heart of the tower. The second he entered, he felt an immediate, overbearing sensation of someone's eyes locked onto him. His skid to a halt, his final footsteps echoing throughout the massive chamber. Looking around, he saw nothing.
The Warrior's only company was the low drone of the cavernous pit below. With the red, flame-like patterns of the walls surrounding it, it was like staring into the core of a dying star. There was no clear end to it, and as he stared at it long enough, he could've sworn he saw the shadows it stretch and claw along its perimeter.
A rush of air at his back nearly toppled him. He turned around to find that part of the shadows had molded into a towering, solitary form: Aku himself.
For a moment, the Warrior was completely frozen. The dark entity looming over him gave him a knowing, cruel smile. Before a word was said between him—as if he could even clearly hear anything the villain said, he was so terrified—the former grit his teeth and fired. The arrow pierced the monster in the waist, but Aku didn't even flinch. The weapon was simply absorbed into his body.
Aku then raised a claws hand. The arrow was launched back out, the Warrior lunging away in time for it to only graze him in the arm. He stumbled along the crowd, his mind scrambling to remember how to escape.
Then, like swatting a fly, Aku knocked him away—directly into the pit. The Warrior felt his body falling helplessly before darkness overwhelmed him, following by what sounded like a chorus of distorted, screaming voices all trapped within the void. He was drowning in them, fighting and kicking at enemies both real and imaginary.
Until they suffocated him.
Until they consumed his every thought.
Until he tired, all while never able to find a moment's rest.
Until he gave into them, feeling the shadows flood every part of his being.
Until, one day—out of the countless days he spent in that sea of horrors—he heard a familar voice call out to him: "From deep within the bowels of the Pit of Hate, I summon you."
((Author's Note: This has next to no canon basis outside of bits and pieces ducktaped together. It's just an idea I had about how Aku gets some of his minions, and I wanted to put it to words. I mean, when we first see him create them in in the timeline, they're not all of the various monsters we see him manifest later. They're more like copies of himself, or possessed soldiers puppeteered to act like doubles of himself. I also personally don't see how a being like Aku, who is evil and destruction incarnate, can truly creating anything. Still, there's a lot of lost souls the Pit of Hate devoured over the years, even before Aku gained consciousness. I can see, rather than simply dying, some of those souls becoming distorted, demonic entities themselves.))

FusionFall Headcanons: Post-battle Clean-up and Restoration
An important role of the Fusion Fighters that can often go overlooked is the clean-up efforts conducted after each battle. Even if tasks such as rebuilding a lot of infrastructure sometimes have to wait since it will most likely end up ruined again during the next monster wave, paths need to be cleared and fusion matter can't be allowed to build up. It's definitely a dirty, deadly job, but someone has to do it!
Even if the area is cleared of fusion monsters, leaving any large build-ups of fusion matter sitting around can put an area at-risk. Not only is it still a poisonous substance to most all life on Earth, large amounts left unattended will increase the likelihood of stronger monsters respawning. There's also the possibility of Gooby Traps left scattered around, which will absolutely cause fusion matter to spread in-mass. Worst-case-scenario, it may even create a new infection zone. As such, whether you are on a bomb squad or are acting as a standard service troop, you have to be thorough. Teams with these jobs will often include antidote nanos and even imaginary friends. To add to their numbers, some of these antidote nanos may include those from separate teams--giving them both an active role and chance to practice their abilities while their IE Donors are elsewhere.
Urban areas tend to receive more care than rural areas do, which is why--with the exception of smaller sites within them like infection zones--they can seem pretty clean overall to us despite the constant fighting taking place there. Even if Fuse targets them heavily, they have more resources to handle repairs and, as mentioned before, are already very much prepared to deal with them due to enduring countless monster attacks on a regular basis prior to the war. People may have to shift around some of those resources, like focusing on the main slider rather than consistently keeping up with the whole network within the City, due to matters such as time constraints; however, there just aren't as many destroyed or morphed landscapes as you see out in the wilderness.
There are a couple of reasons why rural areas/the wilderness don't receive the same attention. They simply don't have the same number of eyes to report where the damaged/infected sites are and there aren't enough resources to handle them to the same degree. Fuse doesn't use this to his advantage often only because he'd rather focus on taking out populated areas first and knows how his enemies would catch on if he did. Instead, he typically allows for fusion matter to make a much slower advance throughout the wilderness, allowing for it to go mostly unnoticed until it's too late. We see the end result of this through things like the infected trees in the Really Twisted Forest or how much worse the infection zones often are in the wilds. The Fusion Fighters in these locations combat this by having more scouts in a separate, more specific role focusing on clean-up, or by working with groups such as the KND SKWID squad, whose purpose in the war is largely to defend Earth's oceans and its wildlife.
Furthermore, while people can repair strips of road and damaged buildings, restoring wildlife in what are still toxic landscapes is much more difficult to manage. Trees are likely to either quickly die or end up infected, so no one really bothers with replanting them just yet. As for animals... Well, it's not like the Fusion Fighters could keep them all contained in safer environments even if they tried. If anything, they'd risk bottling Earth's species in singular, major targets, like what happened at Galaxy Gardens. There's also risks to the environments themselves if the animals are relocated. As such, people will make an effort to care for them too, but they allow the animals to mostly run free; typically catching and releasing them back where they found them after an area is deemed clear.
Before people or animals can return to areas where heavy battles took place, decontaminations are a must. This is a matter of personal safety to those individuals and inhibits fusions from blending in with a crowd to do even more damage. Even if an area were completely clear of fusion matter, if a person is already infected, it can eventually be fatal. Even if they don't have enough fusion matter on/in their bodies to do much harm beyond that, the same can't be said for fusions and it's impossible for them to slip through decontamination. Even if they somehow could hind the fact that their bodies are pretty much 100% fusion matter, the imaginary energy (IE) used during decontamination is deadly to them.
Speaking of IE, let's get back to antidote nanos. The antidote ability is more often used as a preventative measure for fusion fighters when in areas with high concentrations of fusion matter. The same applies for clean-up teams as well, but the Nano Project continuously works to see how far this ability can go--as a means of purifying landscapes or healing like I'd mentioned in my Future headcanons. They can purge fusion matter from the body, hence the 'antidote' name. This does nothing for the physical damage already taken from a fusion matter infection. Still, it can easily prevent a worst-case-scenario. As an extension of that, they'll also remove fusion matter from sources of food/water or soil, but often only in very small amounts: A water bottle or potted plant might not be too much trouble, but a pond or an entire field can be nearly impossible. Over the course of the war, as more research is conducted, there definitely are improvements; however, the ability is never capable of curing areas on a mass-scale. To help compensate, whenever they are tasked on clean-up, antidote nanos may do so in large groups with each other.
IE itself can be used to disintegrate fusion matter in small amounts once larger bodies of it are broken up. This is done through a similar method to creating purified fusion matter for nanos. However, this is even harder to utilize on a large-scale than the antidote ability.
There's not really much to say about the repair process itself, aside that it is largely done with manpower. This wasn't the case prior to the war, but thanks to so many construction robots like the Tech or Air Drones being turned into fusion monsters, people can't use them as they want to avoid potentially adding to Fuse's army as much as possible. Some droids are still around to help, but Earth is a lot more limited in this way. It can also make the work much slower. Moreover, since another battle is likely to occur, you'll find corners cut and more temporary repairs conducted. Both Dexlabs and Mandark Industries have improved handheld tools to try and speed up the manual labor.
An added concern is that new fusion monsters will spawn from the rubble. They're an immediate threat to the teams working on the restoration efforts, yes, but also make whatever previous victory was won in-vain. Since fusion monsters can be made-up of pretty much anything as it is, trying to stop new ones from appearing entirely is a fruitless goal. However, that doesn't mean the Fusion Fighters are going to let them return quickly or in as good of a condition as they were in before. For example, whatever is left of a Tech Drone is going to be dismantled when possible.

"It's been so long since Asgore last came here," said Avalbanshee, sitting draped across the table like a melted puddle. She and her most recent student, Gwendolyn, had joined the two sisters in their studies for the afternoon. "I think you'll be impressed with him."
"From the rumors, he sounds almost childish," Ciara muttered with her nose in a book.
"It's just that sometimes his heart can be a bit larger than his brain."

"If the two were to have dueled alone, Ferris might've won easily for a rare change. Tobius, however, was quick to add to Valda's counterattack with a stream of bullets that circled the young woman. Castellar partially blocked them by raising a large shield to Ferris' right while she once more jumped to safety. A single bullet nicked her in the arm, but it wasn't enough to do any damage—just serve as a warning."

Fellow Kindle Vella Writers, your work is about to get shortchanged!
Today, I got this friendly, little email from the company that states the following:
"We are announcing changes that will make Kindle Vella stories more affordable for all readers to continue to grow the Kindle Vella audience. We have heard consistent feedback from readers on a number of topics related to purchasing Kindle Vella stories. Namely, readers want to be able to sample more of a story before they commit their tokens, and they find the token system confusing and the cost to read a story hard to predict. In response, we are planning several changes in the coming weeks in order to continue to grow the audience of Kindle Vella readers. Specifically: The first 10 episodes will be free. To give readers a better opportunity to get hooked on a story, the number of free episodes per story will be increasing from three to ten. Free episodes read will show up in your Kindle Vella Dashboard under “total episodes read” but not under “locked episodes.” We will continue to consider free episodes read as a factor for how the Kindle Vella bonus is allocated going forward. The 200 free token offer for new readers will end. We will end the free token offer for new readers once everyone can read the first 10 episodes of any story for free, providing them a simpler experience to get started reading on Kindle Vella. All paid episodes will require 10 tokens to unlock. This will help readers better calculate how many episodes they can unlock when purchasing a token bundle. Going forward, readers can purchase bundles of 100, 300, 900, and 2,000 tokens. You will continue to earn 50% of what readers spend on the tokens that are used to unlock your story’s episodes."
Previously, we only had to post three episodes for free and the price for episodes afterward was determined by the word count: A minimum of 600 and a maximum of 5,000.
To give you an idea of how bad this new policy is for us using my own work on the site as an example, the episodes I've written are somewhere around 1,000-2,000 words each. The first episode I was going to be paid for, which was 1,524 words was priced at 15 tokens. That means authors who write more than the bare minimum for episodes will be paid less.
I also broke down episodes I had posted across my three stories with the bare minimum word count in-mind: They jumped from two to four episodes to five to eight episodes. And I won't be paid for any of them.
I've gone ahead and re-submitted my now much shorter and horribly broken up episodes anyway, with a note on each story letting the readers know exactly why the change was made. If Kindle doesn't like it, I will happily remove my stories from Vella and find a new publisher.

"As soon as she’d moved to the next platform, she heard Bow Kid land on the one behind her. This pattern worked for several jumps until, around the fifth go of it, one of the bricks Hat leapt to began shuddering beneath her. She quickly pushed herself off and stumbled into a blasted-out hole in the rock. Bow Kid ricocheted away from the wall to escape to another safe spot on the opposite side of the deep path. The two stood almost level to one another.
A click echoed across the space. A wave of sharp, narrow shapes hurled their way before Hat Kid could lift the mining helmet to check the noise.  Both of the girls activated their time stop hats in a flurry of panic, their surroundings growing even darker as their bodies became shrouded in a misty, black energy."
Act Four of The Sand n' Sails Resort ends on FFN and Ao3!! In the next chapter, we'll be taking a short interlude before we jump to Act Five!!
