to be honest when i see people say that "moral center" characters are boring, i'm like. well, to each their own i guess, you can have your taste and i can have mine. but also: 99% sure that's a straight-up skill issue on behalf of whoever's writing the characters you're thinking of. because when they're written well, characters at the moral heart of their story can also be interesting, complicated, evolving and contradictory, messy, flawed, in possession of Complexes, and most importantly, perpetrators of mistakes so tragic and devastating that they shape the entire narrative. and i know for a fact that all of that is true because of my best friend Lup Adventurezone

The parallels that hurt so much

They both jinxed the most important event in their lives trying to help...

They both lost their closest friends to this....

And both were abandoned and hurt in the worst way possible by the sibling they've looked up to....

They had good intentions, they were so young......

And they're the monsters others have created.

Eragon is 18 years old, and he has been the first Rider since the Rider's war. Eragon was also the only one to have a "proper" education and training for a rider. He has known that after war, he will be the one to find a place for rebuilding the dragon race and eventually be the new leader of Riders.
He had to leave his family, home, friends, and even love in order to make things right because the dragons from eggs and Eldunari needed him. It was his duty, and he thought that he was the only one who must do all that for Academy and future generations, that it his responsibility, and if he makes a mistake, it will be only his fault.
Eragon knows that he should be a peacekeeper, to keep peace between other races. Eragon was only 15 when he had to fight, he was Varden's only hope to defeat Galbatorix. Everyone was relying on him, and it was a lot of pressure on him. After Nasuada was abducted, Eragon had to become a leader of Varden, and it was hard for him to deal with other leaders, maintain stability in the army, and find weapons that would help him kill Galbatorix.
After the war, he had to help Nasuada. He didn't have time for himself to understand what he wanted. His main goal was only to find a place for future Academy, he didn't even think about other options.
I wonder, has Eragon ever been jealous of Murtagh, because his brother was finally free, free to be, and do anything he wants. Has he ever regretted not going with them to the North?
Eragon probably thinks that eventually he will have time for himself and his own desires but only after many years, maybe even centuries. After everything is finally settled down, but before that he must sacrifice his own desires and needs.

Yapping about Andy and Leyley below
(this is very stream of consciousness and unorganized, read at your own risk)
ashley's concepts of love and sex are so different from andrew's (and just in general) it's no wonder they have trouble making their relationship work
but while i interpret this as "she just loves differently and has her own ways of experiencing sexual attraction", andrew seems to interpret this as "ashley's views of love and sex are fundamentally childish", which is NOT a good combo with "parentified sibling syndrome"
ashley has agency, and she should be able to use it to explore and experience love and sex in order to figure things out for herself. but andrew can't recognize that, for all his life he has been attached to her to clean up after her messes - never allowing her to experience the growing pains that come with the consequences of your actions. as far as he understands it, HE is her "agency". he thinks of himself as an adult while ashley is an eternal child.
his whole motivation is to leave behind andy and leyley and grow up. be "normal" adults as andrew and ashley. but he has no idea how to go on about the getting leyley to grow up thing.
unintentionally or not, andrew stunts ashley's growth. he knows how to be a lot of things, her friend, her older brother, her parent. but being her equal is something he's yet to figure out - so used to seeing himself as below her, thinking ashley doesn't respect him, that it doesn't occur to him that he has to see ashley as an equal too. in andrew's mind, he respects ashley plenty... but it's really the same amount of respect a grown person is expected to give a kid. enough to acknowledge them, not enough to see them as an equal.
ashley won't grow up just because you told her to. that's not how it works.
andrew is the hand on ashley's head whenever she wants something. he coddles her, scolds her, protects her - that's all he knows. that's what she wants, right? i can give leyley what she wants (never grow up) AND reach my goal of growing up together, surely <- thoughts conjured by the utterly deranged
newsflash andy, it's a lot easier to fuck your sister when you think of her as the grown ass woman she is. and she'd probably have a more """adequate""" view on relationships if she got the respect she needs in order to feel validated as a person deserving of love
TL;DR: it's genuinelly impressive how many problems these fools could avoid by communicating properly

after a good many years, found myself in a sermon at 10am on a sunday morning and at one point, the religious guilt about my sexuality wrapped so hard around my throat i smirked at recent memories because what else was there to do? ronan lynch, you will forever be loved and understood deeply by me. my absolute beloved
(just after it i was a cm away from a van hitting me because i made a reckless choice and drove into the road with a narrow margin; was really channeling my inner ronan lynch yesterday)

I have not been in this fandom long enough to reasonably judge others' takes however. "EPIC fans are so silly to characterize odysseus as feeling guilty for his actions don't you know he's a war criminal" is definitely a wild one. like first of all to each their own so settle down and let people enjoy things ok. and secondly making choices with a bad outcome, even knowingly and deliberately, does not exclude the possibility of feeling bad about it later. in fact it makes for a much more in depth character because then you get to explore what he does or doesn't feel guilt over, and why, and if that guilt ever edges into regret or not.
#and thirdly i actually find it fascinating the way EPIC had him take a very conscious role in the greying of his morality#it's interesting to me because from my point of view odysseus in the odyssey is almost a passive player in his own myth#and i enjoy taking that very active moral choice and applying it to some of his non EPIC actions#odysseus#epic the musical#uh what is the tag for the epic cycle#as far as I'm aware it's#tagamemnon#?#idk i just think that if you were to ask your character what they would do differently the answer should not be ''nothing lol''#that is either a character who needs wayy more development or a storyteller who needs wayy more practice#also. WAR CRIMES DIDN'T FUCKING EXIST IT WAS THE BRONZE AGE#regardless of how socially acceptable or not his actions may have been#none of those men on the plain of fucking troy was about to sit down and agree on what constituted a crime of war#like if achilles can get away with flaunting straight up deliberate corpse desecration#i don't think anyone gets to say a word against odysseus for being a sneaky underhanded bastard who doesn't fight fair#coming back an hour later to add yet another point. the point of the people with this take is ''haha dont you know hes a bad person''#which fine yes by modern moral standards he is and even by contemporary standards* some of the stuff he does is super yikes man#but that STILL does not preclude him from feeling guilt. 'bad people' can feel guilt#gonna go ahead and explain those quotes around 'bad person' btw um i do not believe in morality like that. no one is fully good or bad#i shant speak on THAT further unless someone asks though#*contemporary is an iffy word here i feel because the default is to call the time of the penning of the text contemporary#despite the events in the text taking place several centuries earlier.#in this particular case because i am speaking from a point of textual analysis i will use the former#however i think that the latter is also a useful reference point

Connected Timelines Ramble: Backing off my previous 'Geno has an ex' headcanon, what if Dust happened to be that ex? I can see them bonding over shared trauma: surviving a genocided timeline and losing their brothers.
So when Dust eventually came clean about his past, that he genocided his own timeline [and others under Nightmare], even if he felt guilty and wanted to change, the heartbreak and betrayal Geno would have felt was devastating.
Even if it was originally done to stop Chara, the fact that he continued to genocide other timelines was despicable in Geno's eyes. Dust became the very same person he hated, and all Geno could see when looking at Dust was her. He broke it off instantly and Dust respected his decision and never contacted him again.
Given that Nightmare and Dream have now been at peace for decades, they're often invited to the same get togethers. They've never told anyone else about their previous relationship, so they act all awkward around each other and nobody knows why.

the thing that fucks me up about Arthur Bennett isn’t that he would never have chosen different, but that he really could have. that he almost does. but he doesn’t. and the cycle continues
