EO3 (partial) lineup - November-December 2022

Peak MAbo is collaborating with your best friend for a(n admittedly unfair) final project (for web development!!!! an elective!!!), saying you would post it, forgetting about it for a year, posting it on Artstation and forgetting about it again.

As always, AC drew the lineart, and I colored. Designs were more of a collaborative effort between the two of us!

Probably should have shared this when the HD collection came out... anyway it's here now!

Some design ramblings under the cut :0! There's a lot i wanna share especially given that we recently did a soft rewrite that departed from the guild system entirely ^^" and EO3's cast was actually one of the first that we had, surprisingly!

Micah is quite clearly alt gladiator 3, but in an entirely different profession. instead of going into the labyrinth, he works in what i imagine would be an analogue to the forge in Tharsis (aka helping people make things busted af). It probably works best for his character, since he was always a gizmo freak even in his first iteration! geomagnetic (or submagnetic, ugh) gizmo is AC's idea!

Micah's brother, Eva, is a very loose spin on zodiac 3, but with a wayyyy lighter colour palette. Admittedly, i did steal a little bit of the spiritmaster's coat from bravely default, but AC managed to spin it back to resembling the original coat that the class had. Eva works as an astronomer, hence the little telescope he always has on him.

Next up we have Eva's protégé, Miri (who was imported from AC's stories)! Theoretically, Miri would be a second zodiac, and, after watching some EO3 speedruns, would probably be really strong in the earlygame when working with Eva in an actual playthrough. AC's design heavily borrows from Patho II's Grace, hence the coat + dress combo.

Following Miri in this lineup would be Noa, her admittedly very lazy but clingy sibling. I think it's apparently here that we didn't have much time to filter what a believable design would be in an EO setting, given that Noa's clothes were translated directly from our designs of them in school attire. It's actually funny how for we diverged from their original portrait (buccaneer 3) to the point that she is literally unrecognizable. Truly a pipeline from good sea boy to j-horror twist character.

Last in the OC section would be Masaru, who recently found work for the Senatus. Admittedly he does have another example of "incongruent time period" clothing (the jacket), though it's a lot more reworkable than Noa. We also made his design a lot less poofy and rugged compared to the original, and I mixed the base and alt color palettes as well to make him less, well, glaringly red. Probably one of the funnier things is that his clothing palette made him blend in more with the likes of Kujura, but given that they work for the same place, it'll probably work out fine.

Now we go onto NPCs, and who better to start than with Flowdia! Admittedly, her art was one of the last ones that we did, hence why her design looks relatively plain (sorry lola). Probably one of the things I would like to add would be more ornate patterns, perhaps of butterflies to tie her closer to Gutrune!

Before we get to the Princess, we gotta get through her bodyguard first! >:0 I honestly don't like Kujura because I answered honestly in his first question, and he said that I was prideful, but AC likes him so he looks really good here. He isn't as rendered here as he is in his portrait, since he was also one of the last characters we made, and I didn't really get to notice that he doesn't have as much value contrast in his clothing as Masaru does. Probably something to think about next time I color him >:0

Next up we have Gutrune!! We decided to make her look more jellyfish-like, while still keeping it a bit uncanny and unsettling. We tried to give her a more traditionally Filipiniana look (mostly on the Maria Clara gown), but we haven't yet made a poncho design that mixes well with butterfly sleeves without looking cluttered. As such, she has a more nightdress-y look here. AC drew in a few tentacles, and I couldn't help but make them look squishy.

Last but not least is Olympia! We wanted to align her appearance more with her background, hence her altered design :0 Having rips of the artbook easily accesible online also helped us flesh out her hair in particular, since we didn't want to just transplant Gutrune's hairstyle onto her.

And that's all of them!!! I'm honestly hoping to draw more EO characters, though Seyfried's design scares me (honestly the reason why I couldn't make a Reversed Emperor comic).

Currently, I've made a lot of progress on the EO4 game, and I'm excited to draw up the three N-turned-PCs + Xiuan >:'0!!! I don't think I can ever get as cool as Morika tho. It aren’t about anyone here, but while it's already been stated on guideline, to make a personal psa in depth, if we notice the Starwake System and especially Micah are being infantilized / overly sexualized / excessively underestimated, it's a hardblock. A prominent pattern we notice is when most prompts we're given from a mun involves Micah being comforted / assisted, which we personally find it demeaning. Especially as an Asian individual who experiences all of these three aspects in the rpc / on the internet and especially in real life, I'm really not in the mood to let our muses, especially my most beloved Asian OCs, be subjected to such treatments.

With Micah in this case when it comes to infantilization and the underestimating, they are extremely emotional and sensitive as they can be childish and dependent, just as I am too, but no muses should be always babying and underestimating them. Micah is quite powerful and skilled, and they were quite known to be highly aggressive and wrathful when they were younger--- they CAN be so as wrath is actually their biggest vice, believe it or not, it's just they actively choose not to / try not to due to experiences and mindsets while they had gone through sessions with both their personal therapist and alter therapist with Phoebus who helped them find ways to manage their anger issues and intrusive thoughts. There's just so many layers and factors to their "childlike" traits that I can write essays on, but basically, their traumas and lack of certain experiences and treatments and having certain needs make them the way they are. I'd never write characters as silly or childish to poke fun or coddle and people shouldn't either nor narrow characters into one trait because they happen to have foolish or childish traits.

Being small and petite or emotional and gentle, what have you, should not make one a weak person and I really wish more folks can understand that, truly, speaking out for both characters and people.

Takes place about three days after Diego receives his new pet.

Cw: vampire whumper/dubious caretaker, pet whump, refusal to eat, forced feeding, captivity, dehumanization, it as a pronoun, background lady whumper, Stockholm syndrome like thoughts for past whumper, fear of death.

“¿Qué haces, chandoso?”

Sometimes when Micah closed his eyes and listened hard enough, he could hear Miss Silva’s voice, repeating like the broken Luis Spinetta record Micah had once scratched and earned a rather memorable whipping for. More often than not, he didn’t even need to try, but only turn his head a certain way and feel Miss Silva’s palm on his jaw or the sting of a backhand.

“Stop that. I’ve trained you better than this.”

It could be night or afternoon. There was no way to tell in his windowless enclosure. Micah had long since given up on trying to keep track of the hypothetical days he’d been with his new owner. The only reference points he had were waking to the always dark room or when his new owner, Diego, he’d called himself, arrived to unleash him. Sometimes there would be food waiting on a tray at the foot of his bed.

“I should have listened to my friends. They told me to get a real cachorro, pero no, no, I didn’t listen. You know who else doesn’t listen? Tell me, Chow. Who never listens to me?”

Once there was a banana and some toasted bread on the tray. The next day there were two burned fried eggs and something that may have been mashed potatoes. It was always a different combination, never a pattern to it. But Micah was a good pet. He may have a new owner, but he remembered Miss Silva’s trainings. 

She would be so proud of him, wouldn’t she?

“Buen chico, now you’re remembering your manners.”

Micah was so, so hungry. But he could be good. He had to be. 

His wrists were sore. His owner kept him tied to the bed from time to time, only breaking the leash to let Micah walk around his enclosure for a bit or use the small bathroom adjoined to the space. It was an incredible reward to use a real bathroom and drink from a faucet rather than a bowl—and don’t get him started on the lack of a cage, the privileges were almost overwhelming—and Micah was definitely not about to make Mr. Diego think he was ungrateful, heavens forbid complaining about something as honorable as a leash. 

This leash is a privilege, chandoso. Remember that. I would not waste my time with a pet who did not deserve to wear my collar.

He remembered his trainings like a lifeline and welcomed Miss Silva’s memory lest he screw up and give Mr. Diego a reason to take away Micah’s treats. The hunger grew until Micah could only fall into a stilted sleep to distract from the aches. It was unpleasant, but Micah had suffered worse. And besides, the rewards always made up for the pain.

Tap-tap. 

Cli-ick.

Micah sucked in a breath as the door to his enclosure turned. Best behavior, best behavior. 

“Good evening, little one.” Mr. Diego stood in the door, another tray in his hand. When he set it on the bed, Micah quickly averted his eyes. Two oranges and a bowl of what looked like sweet grains. 

“Best behavior, Chow.” 

“Today we’re gonna try something different.”

Micah tried not to react. He liked the easy tone of his new owner, the melodic Spanish slipping off his tongue reminiscent of Miss Silva. What he did not like were those words. What had he done wrong already? He hadn’t ate anything like a good pet, so why—

Mr. Diego was still speaking. “You haven’t been eating the food I’ve laid out, and while I will be the first to admit I don’t know everything about, you know—“ Mr. Diego waved his hands in same vague fashion, laughing at some joke Micah did not understand—“it’s common sense that humans have to eat something every day. Even children know that.” Micah couldn’t make sense of the words so he didn’t try. His brain fuzzed out somewhere after you haven’t been eating, and Micah had to quell a proud smile that his new owner noticed his manners. Maybe he wasn’t in trouble after all.

“Hey, sweetheart, are you listening? Eyes up here.”

And just like that, the broken record. Scratching, scratching—

“You’re not a wild animal, Chow. Don’t act like it. Head down, shoulders back, eyes up here. Are you listening?”

Micah was listening. He was. He was not a wild animal, he was trained, he was tamed, he was a good pet, (he was so hungry), no, he was going to be good and earn his treat—

Snap. Micah’s eyes shot up to Mr. Diego who now stood next to the bed, head tilted down at his pet. Mr. Diego slowly retracted his hand where he’d clicked his fingers. “Hey, now. Let’s get these ties off you. I’ve got some better ones coming in but they’re on back order at the moment. Supply chains, you know?” His lips twitched in a smile. “Forgive the pun.”

Micah did not know. He waited patiently while Mr. Diego broke the leash on each wrist. Better ones or not, his new owner seemed to have an endless supply of this kind. Maybe Mr. Diego was as rich as Miss Silva. It was hard to tell in Micah’s enclosure, but he vaguely remembered passing a sprawling driveway the night he’d been transported.

When the leash was gone, Micah tensed. Mr. Diego had never waited around like he did now. Either the tray would be at the foot of the bed, or it would not be. 

Watching his owner from the corner of his eyes, Micah realized. This must be the final test to show his new owner Micah’s manners. If that was the case, Micah was set. Miss Silva may be—Micah blinked away the thought—but he would make her proud. He would. 

“I’m almost certain I know there won’t be an answer to this,” Mr. Diego spoke as if more to himself, “but I may as well try anyway. Will you tell me why you haven’t been eating, little one?”

Little one. Micah quite liked the term. It was different than Chow. 

Mr. Diego waited. The silence stretched. 

See. Micah was such a good dog. Maybe Mr. Diego would call him that name again. 

“Of course. Alright, erm.” Mr. Diego hummed before snatching up one of the oranges and started to peel it. It only took but the first swipe of his claw-like-nail to demolish a quarter of the orange, peel nearly intact. 

Micah stopped a laugh just in time. Silly master. People can’t eat dog food. 

“Well, that was a bust.” Micah’s owner grumbled to himself and picked up the other orange, still whole. The humor that had bubbled in Micah’s throat quickly died when Mr. Diego reached out his hand as if to give Micah the ball shaped fruit. 

“I need you to eat for me, sweetheart. I don’t know why you haven’t yet. Faria doesn’t think you could be allergic to everything I’ve tried so far, so I need you to either tell me what’s wrong or I’ll have to feed you myself. And I think we both can guess how much I’d rather not do that.”

Sweetheart, Faria, allergic. It was a jumble of mishmash lost in the record of eat for me, eat for me, eat for me. 

“I haven’t given you permission yet, chandoso. What pet eats before its Mistress? If you can’t remember a simple rule, maybe the cage will remind you.”

“Hey, hey. What’s wrong? I don’t know how to help you if you don’t speak up, but there’s no—“ “Stop that. Dogs do not speak. Head down, shoulders back. Eyes on me.”

“—reason to start crying, sweetheart.” Micah’s owner rubbed his own face, irises the color of autumn leaves deepening in thought. Miss Silva’s were—had been (no, don’t think about it)—a darker shade of currant, almost black when Micah screwed up. “I don’t know what’s wrong,” he said again, “but I think food will help. You and me both, that is, because even I’m not a dick enough to feed from you when you’re this…”

If Mr. Diego finished his sentence, Micah didn’t hear it. What did Mr. Diego mean, feeding from him? Micah must have heard wrong. Because Micah was a pet. Micah wasn’t food. Didn’t Mr. Diego have the right animals for that? 

Good dogs were pets. Bad, bad animals were food. 

Unless….

“I promise I do not want to hurt you,” Mr. Diego was saying as he gave up on the orange and brought the untouched bowl over to Micah. “But this is for your own good, little one. Open your mouth for me. Shoulders back, sit up now.” Shoulders back, eyes up here. You’re not a wild animal. Bad, bad animals get their blood drank and thrown away. Won’t you be a good Chow?

The second his new owner forced Micah’s jaw open, Micah could only cry out. Of course he had no claws or fangs like Miss Silva or Mr. Diego to protect himself. But his new owner was far too strong for him to even consider struggling anyway, and the horror of the situation was only finally hitting Micah in full force. He was supposed to be a pet. That’s what he was trained for. 

Not food.

Micah broke the number one rule. 

“Sir, I-I can be good. Please.”

He spoke. He did, but…wasn’t he justified? Miss Silva hadn’t given him permission to eat (but Miss Silva’s…no, don’t think, you can’t think about that) and now Mr. Diego was going to make him disobey. 

Mr. Diego’s eyes grew wide. “Would you look at that. So you can speak."

A tremor laced Micah’s heart. He didn’t dare commit another infraction. How long had it even been since he’d lost spoken? 

Micah waited for the slap or the claws to come. If Micah feared right, would Mr. Diego use his fangs? Of all the things Miss Silva used to reprimand Micah, she had made it clear what Micah’s purpose was. 

But now? Micah was so very lost. 

“Scare easily, huh,” Mr. Diego muttered. “If you can be good, why are we doing this the hard way? Oh come now, there’s no need for that.” 

Setting the bowl down on the bed’s side table, he cradled the back of Micah’s head with one hand, all strong muscle and sinew keeping Micah in place. Micah remembered how Miss Silva would grab him similarly. Instead of Mr. Diego keeping Micah immobile, though, Miss Silva had a preference for yanking Micah by the hair until clumps fell out in patches. It had grown out in the recent past, but maybe Micah’s new owner wouldn’t want to keep it that way.

“Alright, shhh. Wipe that look off your face, little one. I’m doing this for your own good, you know.”

With his other hand, Mr. Diego reached down and pinched Micah’s nose to halt the airflow. For the first few seconds, Micah used all his willpower not to struggle. It was instinct to try to pull back, but what is instinct to a trained dog? 

But Micah was not like his superiors. He was more than aware of his own weakness before this figure, and that was disregarding the fact he’d had nothing to fill his stomach but water in the past however many days it had been. Unable to grasp what purpose his new owner intended for Micah, on top of his already weakened state, Micah lost the battle quickly. Chest burning, lungs aching, Micah could only drop his mouth in desperation and gasp for air. 

But there was hardly a reprieve because only a second later, Mr. Diego was forcing the first spoonful of sweet grains down Micah’s throat. The thought of it not staying down was enough for Micah to clench at the bedsheets, stomach curling in fear. It never even crossed his mind to try to push away with his hands now freed. 

Micah was eating.

Micah was a bad, bad dog.

“Swallow, sweetheart. Stop crying, you’ll choke. You need to eat.” 

And everyone knows what happens to bad animals. 

I want to be good. 

I need to be good.

Please. 

"You’re lucky, you know,” Miss Silva liked to say, the words a brand in Micah’s mind as the next spoonful burned a hole down his throat. 

“You’re lucky that I only call you Chow.”

➽ a/n: another few weeks later and i am here with another work of mine, today i present to you all my new creation that i am proud to be the mother of it. this work is a little too short for my own likes, but i feared that if i wrote more i could easily ruin it…so please, bear with me today’s writing.

➽ walking around the streets without paying attention led you to meet someone completely different from most people you met before. clothes so bright that might your hurt at first glance full of cute patterns on it, hairclips all over his dyed hair and of course, his personality being way too soft for a world like this, but with a little extra spicy that can’t be compared to anyone else.

➽ micah is his name, a sweet boy that isn’t so tall compared to most guys that you’ve encountered. yet, is the one who catch your attention the most with his odd smile, unfamiliar style and unique sense of humor. you consider yourself lucky to have met someone like him and even luckier to have someone by your side after moving to a new city.

➽ you might have know him for a couple of weeks, but it’s feel like he been around your whole life by the way he acts with you. many people even mistakenly you two as a couple by how affectionate he is in public, always holding hands and kissing your cheek as a way to greet you, so you don’t blame them for thing the wrong way when explaining that micah is just too friendly with you. but no one seems to believe you, always telling you that there is no shame in being touchy with him in public or hide the relationship.

➽ well, they aren’t wrong about micah being so much cling with you in the public eyes. sometimes, you ask yourself the last time you went out without him or for how long he can go without touching you (almost a minute, you recall). your best friend being like this doesn’t make you uncomfortable, by the completely opposite, you are kind into it. after all, everyone needs some physical affection and you are in no place to deny it.

➽ as more time goes on, you only got closer to micah while your other friends began distancing themselves away from you. why would they do that? the sense that you’ve done something wrong quickly makes you anxious, overthinking and even forgetting things that you were supposed to do. it’s hurt to see so many people leave you, abandon you. but hey, at least micah is by your side with no intention to leave.

➽ “let’s go out, [name]!” he brings you to the mall whatever he feels like, buying expensive outfits that match his style and making you pose with him to post at his social media. mostly of the comments compliment how the two looks so perfect together, some even saying that micah is a lucky guy to have you in his life. “look, look, [name]! they think we are a couple! isn’t that cute? maybe we do fit to be together like that.”

➽ “don’t be silly.” always patting his head makes him melt under your touch only if you could do that on other parts of his body, and he couldn’t be more grateful to be receiving those head pats too. “aren’t you a little to young for me? i know that you enjoy hugging me a lot and even kissing my cheek whatever you want, but you have to remember that i am older than you.”

➽ “hahaha, i know that.” can’t you see that his smile is no bigger as it was? your eyes does look at him, seeing that he isn’t playful like before, so you hold one of his hand and smile at him. “but you will stay by my side, right? like forever without anyone else trying to separate us.”

➽ “i promise, micah.” his pink dyed hair has become a messy by the time you stopped patting him, making him slightly better to the rest of the hanging out. even with your words promising to stay with him forever, the boy can’t help but want more than your friendship.

➽ he wants to be your boyfriend, then fiancé and then husband! the plans for the wedding are already written down at his journal and the ideas for your dress/suit to match his outfit can’t be ruined by your mindset of him being ‘too young’. he is already twenty-one! just because he still on his second year of college, doesn’t mean that he isn’t mature enough to marry the love of his life!

➽ that’s why he promise himself to study hard to graduate with the best grades from his fashion design class, so he can get a degree and a good paying job at his area. maybe you will see him with other eyes when he becomes a fully grown man who can afford to pay rent without struggling and to make the best matching outfits to both of you when he gets himself a studio and able to buy the most comfortable materials ever made.

➽ he can already imagine the large house he will buy for you. a big one at the countryside of the country so no one will disturb his peaceful and lovely spouse (you, of course!), maybe he will give/adopt a child with you like he always dreamed of. but that only will happen if he works hard, so micah has a long way to go. for now, he will stay close with you as a friend only.

➽ in meanwhile, he will act behind the scenes when someone might try to steal you away from him. those idiot who think that have a chance with are all disposable and you won’t never need anyone else in your life other than him (and probably a future pet to keep you company), so micah waste no time in making sure those people won’t be found and of course. he always makes a good job in hiding the remains of those people into the deepest parts of the woods, after all, he can’t do any mistakes or else he won’t be there for you in the future, [name].

They never let their darling see them, oh no, that would scare them away! But they’re always there, watching.

Obsessive darlings who have a whole shrine of photos and belongings from their darling, all taken without their knowledge. Who cares how they got them? All that matters is how dedicated and devoted they are to their darling, no matter how odd it may seem to others. Yanderes who add more to the shrine when they can, desperate to have more of their darling in any way they can have them, at least before they get to be with them.

Obsessive yanderes who will do anything to be with their darling. They’ll change everything about themselves, they’ll become a whole new person if it means their darling will give them a second glance. It doesn’t matter that they’re completely destroying themselves for the sake of someone else, nothing matters more than their darling, nothing. Of course, most of the time they don’t have to change a thing, but if it came down to it they’d be willing to do whatever it took to insure their darling stays with them.

2024 Ice Hockey Women's World Championship: A Primer

When: April 3rd to April 14th. The schedule here will tell you when games are taking place both in your local time and venue time.

Where is it taking place?: Utica, New York

Where to watch:

For the first time, we will have ALL games broadcasted in USA and Canada. I am not sure how many games are going to be broadcasted outside North America, but we can reasonably assume they will at least carry their home country games

TSN will carry all games in canada

What is the tournament format?:

There are two divisions, Division A with the five ranked teams going into the tournament and Division B with the next five. Each division plays a round robin style ranking round, and at the conclusion the bottom two teams in Division B will be relegated, while the rest automatically make the quarterfinals. Quarterfinals will go A1-B3, A2-B2, A3-B1, A4-A5. In addition to the finals for gold that will take place, there will be a bronze medal game and a fifth place game for ranking. Standings will use a three point systems.

Division A: USA, Canada, Czechia, Switzerland, Finland

Division B: Sweden, Japan, Germany, China, Denmark

Here is where it gets long. Below the cut I will tell you each teams roster, how they did last year, their reasonable goals, notable roster changes, and three players to watch. I will do my best to keep this informative, but brief.

USA

2023 Result: Won Gold

2024 goals: Win gold again

Notable roster changes: This team continues to go very very young. Abby Roque is the most notable roster omission here. Top defender Lee Stecklein is also not on this roster, due to her taking a break from the National Team. Amanda Kessel was also left off, but she has not been active within the last year as a player, so not entirely surprising.

Three players to watch: Grace Zumwinkle has been one of the stars of the PWHL so far, and is likely to get more responsibility on the national team than ever before, so keep an eye on her and how she may translate her successful season to the tournament. Rory Guilday may only be 21, but she is heading to her third senior world championships, a long time favorite of the team USA coaching staff with her shutdown defensive skills who they'll hope can take another step this tournament with Lee Stecklein absent. Joy Dunne is the youngest player on this roster, just 18 years old coming off a 24-18-42 season in Ohio and a national championship. This will be her first senior level tournament, and I'd expect her to get ample offensive opportunities.

Canada

2024 goals: Gold

Notable roster changes: Micah Zandee-Hart is the most surprising one after being on the roster for a few years. Claire Thompson is absent as is Rebecca Johnston, but that is more expected while Thompson is finishing medical school and Johnston has not played in the past calendar year. Cousins Nicole and Julia Gosling join the team after strong rivalry series showings.

Three players to watch: Natalie Spooner is the front runner for PWHL MVP, so everyone will be watching to see if she continues to score at the rate she has been. Expected number one overall pick in the upcoming PWHL draft, Sarah Fillier, will be playing in her last showing before the draft happens as she finished out her college season. Nicole Gosling was the highest scoring defender in the NCAA this year at Clarkson, going 14-25-39 in 40 regular season games, so seeing how she impacts this blue line is a must watch.

2023 result: Bronze

2024 goal: upset their opponent in the semifinals and make the finals

Roster changes: The bad news is top defender Dominika Lásková is out with injury. The good news is star goaltender Klára Peslarová is healthy unlike last year, as is blueline mainstay Tereza Radová. Alena Mills retired from the national team. Kristýna Pátková did not make the team this year, in her place comes Boston University commit Anežka Čabelová who had a stellar U18 worlds. Karolína Kosinová did not make the team, in her place is HV71 assistant captain Klara Seroiszková.

Three players to watch: 17 year old Adéla Šapovalivová was the highest scoring u18 player in the SDHL (Sweden's highest level league) this year and one of their top scorers in general going 11-18-29 in 32 regular season games. She was also a key part of the U18 team that upset Canada in the semifinals to advance to Czechia's first ever u18 final. With Mills retired, she will get more minutes at her third (!!!!) senior worlds. Next up is Klára Peslarová, and if you're not familiar with her game, she is straight up a top five goaltender in the world. She just came off a stellar season with Brynäs IF in Sweden where she had a .935 save percentage in 20 games, and has been consistently stellar on the international stage as well like when she had 55 saves against the united states at the olympics. Kateřina Mrázová is a fantastic playmaker has been a bright spot on a Ottawa tam that has struggled to find itself, and is also one of the most veteran members of this squad. If they win, she'll have to lead the way.

Finland

2023 finish: Fifth Place

2024 goals: Bronze

Roster changes: Two of their key offensive pieces Elisa Holopainen and Michelle Karvinen, are back and healthy this year! Susanna Tapani is also back on this team. Those are three absolute big pieces that completely change this roster for the better. A few depth roster forwards were left off in their place, most notably Kiira Yrjänen. Defense has more shakeups. Sini Karjalainen is a notable omission and long time defender Rosa Lindstedt retired. Eve Savander, Oona Koukkula, and Siiri Yrjölä slot in.

Three players to watch: I've consistently been a very big Elisa Holopainen fan and I think she's one of the best players in the world and not talked about nearly enough. Just as she began to really shine in the international stage, she got hit with injury, but as she's come back with year she dominated Finland's league going 32-25-57 in 19 games. I think I've put her as a player to watch like every year I've done a preview and I'm going to keep going it. Finland has faced a lot of questions about their goaltending following Räty and the team going their separate ways, but right now, it is Sanni Ahola's crease to lose. She was stellar in the three games she started last year for Finland in the world championship and was solid for st cloud state with a .935 save percentage in 17 starts this year. With Lindstedt's retirement, Krista Parkkonen will see more minutes, coming off a breakout sophomore year in a university of vermont program that's developed a decent amount of international blueliners.

Switzerland

2024 goals: bronze

Roster changes: quite a lot of shake up. no Caroline spies as their mainstay backup, Alexandra Lehmann takes her place. No Sarah Forster, who wore an A and led their defense last time around. She only played 7 games in SWHL this year, so likely injury is at play.

Players to watch: it is, of course, the Alina Müller and Lara Stalder show until it isn’t. So, besides them, the players to watch are Andrea Brändli is another “top five goaltender in the world” to know, sporting a .937 in her first year playing in Sweden post a stellar college career. 18 year old Ivana Marie Wey just had a great year playing pro as Stalder’s teammate and will be important for the next Swiss wave. With no Forster, Lara Christen will take on a lot of the top defensive minutes most likely.

Sweden

2024 hopes: return to group A

Roster changes: no Sarah Grahn which isn’t entirely expected but still a big change, in response Ida Boman gets the call. No Fanny Rask or Olivia Carlsson, who retired.

Three players to know: Ebba Hedqvist is a 17 year old elite center coming off a great performance at worlds and has an eye for playmaking that will be critical for Sweden. Maja Nylén Persson is the #1 defender of team Sweden that has consistently been the top defender by points in the SDHL and won defender of the year in 2022-2023, and she is only 23 years old. Another part of Sweden’s insane center depth is Lina Ljungblom, who will likely play in Montreal next year and had 46 points in 36 regular season games. In the various tournaments/friendlies that Sweden has played leading up to this (ie five nations cup), she has 10 goals in 15 games. These three players are truly some of my favorite in hockey right now

Japan

2024 hopes: return to group A

Roster changes: honestly we mostly running this back. One or two u18 add ins but overall the same as 2023

Players to watch: stop me if you heard this before but Akane Shiga is very good. The PWHL Ottawa player is the only player from Japan to score against the USA, and will continue to be japans biggest threat. Another big player is Haruka Toko, one of the SDHL’s top scorers this year who had established herself as a top talent in the last two years. This year, the 27 year old had 13 goals and 30 assists in 36 games in Sweden this year. She was one of seven players in Japan to play in Sweden this year, a year that saw a new high in Japanese players going overseas to play. That also includes my last player to watch, Yoshino Enomoto, who played in switzerland and still put up around a point per game on a team that struggled (they folded in the offseason then came back and built their roster late and were ultimately relegated, but she was a bright spot in her first season there)

Fun fact: did you know three pairs of sisters play on this team? Akane and Aoi Shiga, Haruka toko and Ayaka Hitosato, and Rio and Riri Noro

2023 Results: Eighth

2024 Goal: Make quarterfinals and avoid relegation

Roster changes: Both goalies behind Abstreiter last year, Chiara Schultes and Johanna May, did not make this roster with Hemmerle and Loist taking their place. The d core remains the same besides Daria Gleissner taking Heidi Strompf's place. National team vet Marie Delarbre is absent with injury, Sonja Weidenfelder did not play hockey this year and her status is uncertain, and Anne Bartsch did not make the roster. In their place we have Emily Nix, Lilli Welcke, and Lucia Schmitz.

Three players to watch: Luisa Welcke was with Germany last year, but has a second season in the NCAA under her belt and a nice depth player performance at Boston University. She will have more chances to show off her offense this tournament than in the NCAA, and I'm excited to see what she can show. Jule Schiefer had a revelation this year in the German league. From last year where she only scored 4 goals in 20 games, this year she scored 22 in 24. Let's see if she can continue this at worlds. Nina Jobst-Smith will play big defensive minutes for Germany after finishing her fourth season at Minnesota Duluth, this time serving as an assistant captain, and was nominated for 2023-24 All-WCHA Third Team. She's a two way defender who will be taking on big responsibility for Germany as she has in the past.

China

2023 result: Promotion from Division I

2024 goal: Make quarterfinals and avoid relegation

Roster changes: Oh boy. So, like, a lot of people, and here is why: up until this tournament, China allowed dual citizens not born in China to play for them. This includes some players you may know from PWHL/NCAA like Leah Lum, Hannah Miller, Rachel Llanes, and Tia Chan. Going into this tournament, they changed the rules and those players will not be eligible, so it is a significant roster shakeup.

Three player to watch; This team is very young. Yifan Wang is 16 years old, and in her international debut scored 10 goals in 5 games in the WJC-D2A U18. This is obviously a gigantic step up in competition and very hard for a 16 year old to be playing against adults on the highest level stage of women's hockey, so I don't imagine she'll get a TON of ice time, but she is worth looking out for. Xin Fang is the veteran and star of this roster, who had 2 goal and 2 assists in the teams D1A tournament that earned them their promotion. 17 year old Dartmouth commit Grace Zhan is who I expect to be their starting goaltender. Born in Beijing, she spent the past year playing Minnesota High School Hockey and put up top numbers in a league that sees a lot of NCAA recruits.

Denmark

2023 Results: Promotion from Division I

2024 hope: Make Quarterfinals and avoid relegation

Roster changes: Long time national team star and centerpiece of the team Josefine Jakobsen will no longer play for Denmark, though she will continue her club career.) Otherwise, despite some depth changes, it is mostly the same lineup.

Three players to watch: Frederikke Foss had a great year at Shattuck St Mary's u19 program and has committed to UMaine, and may be able to spark some offense Denmark will desperately need without Jakobsen. Silke Lave Glud will also be expected to carry the offense after her stellar year in the Tier 2 league in Sweden, and lead the way for younger players as one of the most experienced members of the team. Goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström's performance at the D1A worlds was a big reason for their promotion, and she is coming off a great sophmore year at st. lawrence university where she had a .931 save percentage in 36 games and 7 shutouts. If Denmark wants to stay in the top division, she will need to steal a game for them.
