Today I found out that some people genuinely believe artificial food dyes cause adhd and cancer??? How do you come to that conclusion. 99% of the junk food we eat has artificial food dyes and last I checked most people who eat a lot of junk food don’t have cancer??? Or adhd????

Do that last one about Drunk weddings for the Sole Survivor, too. I may have my biases, but Fallout 4 can have a little love, as a treat.
Cait: "Don't be makin' so much noise in the back if you aren't going to share, you hear?"
Prior to her journey into Vault 95, Cait is just as stumbling drunk as the sole survivor, giggling with reckless abandon and daring guests to go a round with her outside the venue. She enlists the sole survivor to help her change out of her dress to make good on these bare-knuckle boxing promises, but the two of them wind up forgetting about the whole thing and singing loudly over the music on the dance floor. Post-sobriety, Cait heckles the sole survivor after they pass the point of no return, but she abstains in favor of demolishing Piper's gifted stash of Nuka-Cola.
Curie: "Do not indulge too much, mon glaçon. Excess of drink is the cause of many health problems."
Curie, ever the picture of innocent poise, laughs politely when the sole survivor starts making outbursts at the party, then corners them in the bathroom when she's free and insists they drink several glasses of water and eat some mirelurk cake hors d'oeuvres in front of her. She enlists Danse to help her carry the sole survivor to bed when they finally wear themselves out, and she does it all without staining or ripping her dress.
Danse: [speechless, awkward blushing]
Paladin Danse turns beet red when the sole survivor climbs onto a chair to get the party's attention for a toast, and dashes to their side when they start to wobble. To him, a wedding is no reason to let down his guard and drink, but the rest of his Brotherhood brethren don't share that viewpoint: Particularly Proctor Teagan, who is just as far in as the sole survivor. Once embarrassed, Danse tries to stay on the opposite end of the room, and steers his new spouse clear as well. He will give up his avoidance tactics if asked to dance, though.
Deacon: "Everyone drink up, we're trying to erase any memory of this get-together in case the Institute captures us and demands to know what menu and color scheme we picked."
Given his career and his own personal history, Deacon insists on having a small affair with close friends over a large shindig. He's mostly joking about forgetting the party- or is he?- but either way, he's handing out bottles of Bobrov's Best like it's going out of business. Valentine keeps side-eyeing him and calling him an "enabler," but Deacon couldn't care less.
Hancock: "Cheers to you, cheers to me, cheers to us and the whole fucking Commonwealth!"
The sole survivor's drunk? Good, so is Hancock. Like Deacon, the mayor of Goodneighbor is handing out bottles of booze left and right, along with palming chems to anyone in the Third Rail who looks too mellow. Whitechapel Charlie complains loudly when the groom and the sole survivor start dancing on the bar, but Hancock does not care one whit about property damage on his special day. That is, unless someone starts getting fresh with Magnolia.
MacCready: "So when I said partnering up with you beat drinking myself blind in Goodneighbor, that wasn't me saying we should switch spots, boss."
MacCready is too overwhelmed with disbelieving happiness on his big day to care if the sole survivor is wrecking shop. He's too busy staring at his new spouse holding Duncan and laughing with joy to notice the sole survivor spilling drinks on other guests, but he will perk up if they manage to hijack the jukebox. He'll roll his eyes, switch the song back to something more to his taste, and then drag the sole survivor onto the dance floor to work off some of their excess energy.
Valentine: "Gonna water that battery acid down with anything, or do I need to tell Vadim to cut you off?"
The synth detective takes in the sole survivor's antics with a wry smile before pulling them aside to make sure they're going to behave for the rest of the night. Any further shenanigans will earn them a withering frown from across the party. Rather than leave his new partner's side, he enlists Ellie and Piper's help in strong-arming them away from the moonshine supply and out into the fresh air for a bit.
Piper: "Really, Blue, on my wedding day? I don't do many editorial cartoons, but I think this might warrant one."
Piper has roses blooming in her own cheeks from drinking, but she'll insist the sole survivor switch to Nuka-Cola, park them in a chair next to her and toss tongue twisters at them until they can recite them back to her straight. Like MacCready and Danse, she will also accept some impressive dance moves as penance for their crime of disrupting the celebration, but if she starts dancing too, she'll slip quickly into the same territory of overdoing it.
Preston: "No thanks, but you keep going. We'll see whose head feels better come sunrise."
On the opposite end of the scale from Deacon, Preston doesn't want to forget a second of this day and is therefore abstaining. His Minutemen compatriots aren't though, so the sole survivor fits right in with the crowd. Ever the model of manners, Preston will join in on their drunken rendition of Dion's "The Wanderer," but he'll just as quickly bow out to go grab his new spouse a drink, chair, snack or anything else they might need.
X6-88: "Strange. The sensation leaves me unbalanced, but... warm. Perhaps the SRB was right to restrict substances such as this."
The Courser is puzzled the first time the sole survivor hands him a drink, but he accepts it and downs the lot admirably, shaking his head at the taste. He likes the way it makes him feel for a little bit, but learns quickly that if he keeps going, he'll wind up draped over the nearest furniture like the former vault dweller. Once the sole survivor is hiccupping and incoherent, he easily hoists them over his shoulder and deposits them as far away from the liquor supply as he can, ignoring the impressed cheers of Deacon and MacCready.
BONUS!
Gage: "No, I don't care if it was brewed in a settlement, that stuff'll knock you on your ass just as well as the beer that's been sitting still for 200 years."
Porter Gage has been dry for decades, and his own wedding isn't going to be enough to ruin that streak. Seeing as he's pals with a whole bunch of raiders, he can't well keep the rest of them from indulging, but he can sure as hell protest if the sole survivor tries to push a bottle on him. Repeated inquiries will earn them a black eye, but he'll let them steal his eyepatch for the rest of the night as condolence.
Longfellow: "Here's to full glasses an' fulsome lasses, ain't that right, honey? Bottoms up!"
There's not much to do on the island when you live alone, other than get really good at your hobbies and drink. Old Longfellow lives accordingly, and he can out-swig anyone attending his little party, including the sole survivor. By the end of the night, those who dared to pick up a glass around the man are under the table, while Longfellow is still singing sweet, fully-coherent lullabies to his new gal beneath the glow of the bottle lanterns. Knowing him, she's probably just as seasoned at drinking as he is.
Maxson: "Dull senses make for poor soldiers, but I suppose we can set our weapons aside for one evening."
Any Brotherhood of Steel Elder's marriage is a huge deal, and subsequently warrants a huge celebration. Alcohol flows freely at such parties, and any drunken behavior on the sole survivor's behalf is probably drowned out by hundreds of other Knights, Scribes and Lancers acting foolish too. Like Longfellow, Maxson holds his own in contest with everyone else, but doesn't push those around him to keep up. Anyone counting his drinks can't help but wonder where he's putting it. If the sole survivor's not too far gone, they can spot him dumping his glasses after a sip or two to keep up the mythic image, but he'll swear them to secrecy.
Desdemona: "Being able to take a moment to breathe can be just as vitally important for an organization as resupply missions or exterminations. Stop touching my hair."
The Railroad leader appreciates being able to cut loose, but she's still too paranoid to trust any glass handed to her and favors the flask inside her ballistic weave-armored dress that she fills herself. Once relaxed, this is the only time she'll allow the sole survivor and friends to get rowdy and fawn over her in the least. Liquored-up compliments on her outfit, her leadership abilities and her organization are fair game, but any probing into her personal background will result in her simply standing up and walking away.

A/N: Here’s what you need to know: I created this story for Writer’s Month 2020. Every day is a new prompt, and therefore a new chapter. This is an AU Wolfstar where Remus is a tattoo artist next door to Sirius who manages a flower shop. James and Lily are alive in this universe and own a coffee shop across the street. And to make parts of the story work with the prompts, Remus is about 10 years older than Sirius. It also takes place more or less in present time, minus Covid-19.
This is chapter 12 of a multi-chapter work. If you’d like to start from the beginning, here is chapter 1.

Remus leaned back in his favorite chair. He wanted to read but found his eyes glazing over and rereading the same page at least three times. Giving it up, he closed the book and tossed it on the table next to his long forgotten cup of tea. He crossed his legs, setting his right ankle on his left knee, and steepled his fingers under his chin. 
With helping Sirius go through everything the last couple months, Remus had been thinking more about the day he moved in here.
It was mid-morning. Remus stood in the living room of his new flat above what would be his new tattoo parlor. He placed his hands on his hips and took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of cleaning supplies used by the last owner. With a swish of his wand, his magically shrunk packing boxes grew with a POP. This was what he needed. New start, new place, new life. His old place was...too full of painful memories.
He levitated boxes into the rooms to which they belonged. First he set up his bedroom. If nothing else, he needed a place to sleep tonight. By the time he finished the bedroom, it was afternoon, and his stomach was reminding him that he had missed lunch. There was a cafe across the street he had noticed, maybe they had something decent.
The bitter scent of coffee and warm yeasty bread invaded his senses when he entered.
“Good afternoon! Welcome to Potter’s Wheel!” a red-headed woman greeted him when he entered.
Remus gave her a friendly head nod and glanced at the menu board over the order counter. It was designed to look like a chalk board with different chalk colors. The Potter's Wheel Cafe served a full offering of coffee and caffeine laced beverages, as well as soup, sandwich, and salad specials. They also had a quick take-away cooler with simple premade sandwiches, fruit, and vegetables. Today’s specials appeared to be a turkey club on a kaiser bun, broccoli cheese soup with croutons, and a beet salad with feta cheese.
“Erm…” Remus stepped up to the counter, uncertainty festering inside him.
“What would you like, dear?” the red-head asked with a wide smile.
Overly friendly waitresses were not one of Remus' favorite things. They made him nervous and uncomfortable.
“I’ll take a bowl of broccoli soup, a turkey club, and --” he still had a lot of unpacking to do “-- a large black House Blend coffee, please.”
The red-head nodded and wrote down his order. “No problem.” She handed him a table number and said, “Pick any table and set this on the edge. I’ll have it out to you in no time.”
Remus accepted the number with a whispered, “Thank you,” and turned to choose a table. A two-top in the corner, where he had a view of the front door and the counter, was the winner.
The cherry wood grain formica table top matched that of the front counter. He was thinking about his new tattoo parlor venture and absentmindedly tracing the curve of the faux grain with his fingertip when the red-head brought his coffee.
She sat the coffee down, pulling him out of his reveries. “I’ve never seen you in here before. Are you just passing through?”
Remus looked up into the brightest emerald eyes he had ever seen. “Um...no...sorry, I mean, I’m not just passing through. I moved in across the street.” He pointed out the window. “I’m a tattoo artist.”
“Well, that’s neat!” She smiled and held out her right hand. “My name’s Lily. My husband James and I own this Cafe.”
He shook her hand. “I’m Remus. Nice to meet you.”
“I’ll be back with your food soon,” she said with a wink, and walked back behind the counter.
Remus put his elbow on the table and rested his chin in his palm. He looked around the colorful interior of the Cafe. Three of the walls were a golden yellow hue, and the accent wall behind the front counter was burgundy red. Long, red pocket curtains hung over the windows. They were semi-transparent and allowed the sunlight to bask the Cafe in a warm glow. The other corner held a comfy sitting area with a dark brown leather sofa and two leather armchairs. Something about the place made him feel like he was home.
Lily returned at that moment with his food and a coffee pot to top off his coffee.
He offered her a smile with a soft, “Thanks, Lily.”
“Let me know if you need anything else.”
Remus tucked into the meal. It was delicious. More delicious than anything he had eaten in a long while. Impossibly delicious.
In what seemed like no time, Remus finished the soup and sandwich. He stacked the bowl on the plate and pushed them toward the center of the table. Letting out a content sigh, he leaned against the back of the chair.
Lily appeared and collected the empty plate and bowl. “Anything else?” she asked.
“No...thank you. I don’t think I could eat another bite. It was all delicious.”
“Are you sure? Not even any desert? I bake a mean chocolate cake,” she said with a smile.
Hmm… “Chocolate cake did you say?” He couldn’t say ‘no’ to that.
“Yep. Bake it every morning. I got one piece left with your name on it.”
“Alright. Yeah...I’d love a piece of chocolate cake.” Remus laughed.
Lily walked away and he tried to remember the last time he had actually laughed. It had been a while.
The sight of the cake Lily placed in front of him made his mouth water. Which was saying something because he was already so full from everything else he had eaten. It smelled rich and decadent, and tasted even better. With every bite he could feel his spirit begin to lift.
He finished the cake and the last of his coffee, then went to the counter to pay his bill. A gentleman with messy black hair stood at the register holding a young boy with equally messy black hair.
“Eight pound, fifty,” said the man.
Remus fished in his pockets for his Muggle money, and found a tenner. He handed it to the man and said, “Leave the rest for Lily, please.”
“I’ll do that. Thanks! Come again soon.”
He started back across the street to finish unpacking his flat and noticed the shop next door to his. Dog Among the Daisies, Flower Loft, Remus read the sign over the door. Might as well meet these neighbors, too, he thought as he stepped inside. And maybe I’ll pick up something small for the flat. Something that looks and smells nice. 
The floral fragrance overpowered his senses upon entering the establishment, and he had to shake his head to clear it. A refrigerator stood to one side with an assortment of arrangements. His brown brogues tapped as he made his way across the hardwood floor toward the front counter.
There was a service bell on the counter so he dinged it a couple times.
“Just a mo’!” called a man’s voice from the back.
He clasped his hands behind his back and wandered around the small lobby, looking at the floral creations. He had his back to the counter when he heard the man again.
“Sorry about that. What can I do for ya’?”
Remus turned around and took in the sight of the man before him. He had shaggy black hair pulled back into a bun and a closely trimmed beard. His grey eyes pierced into Remus’ and stole his breath.
“I...uh…” Remus stammered. “Flowers…” He pointed like an idiot.
The man looked where Remus had pointed. “You want to buy some flowers? Well, you came to the right place.” He gave a lopsided grin that turned Remus’ will into a puddle.
Remus cleared his throat. Let’s try this again. “I...uh…” What the fuck is wrong with me?
The man moved from behind the counter. “These premade arrangements are popular with people passing by.” He gestured to the refrigerator case next to Remus. “Or you can place a special order to pick up later.” When Remus did not reply, he turned to face the case and continued, “See anything in here you like?”
A whiff of leather and coffee cut through the floral scent when the man moved near Remus. He had to close his eyes to control the involuntary shudder playing down his spine. When he opened his eyes again, the man was staring at him with those eyes the color of steel.
“I...uh…” Breaking the eye contact, he looked over the arrangements in the cooled case. “That one is nice.” He pointed at a  medium sized arrangement with white and purple flowers in a clear vase.
“Interesting choice,” the man said as he slid open the case and pulled out the arrangement. “Gardenia and Calla lily. I made this one yesterday.” He turned his head to the side and considered the arrangement. “I wondered who would take it home. Did you know most florists believe different flowers have different meanings?” The man grinned at Remus before he turned to head back to the counter.
“No...what do these flowers mean?” Remus asked, almost afraid of the answer.
The man was behind the counter again, but the scent of leather and coffee still lingered in the air.
“Gardenia,” he pointed at the white flowers, “are symbolic of a secret love.”
Remus tried to swallow, but his mouth had gone dry.
“And calla lily,” he continued and pointed at the purple flowers, “are named after the Greek word for beautiful, so some people associate it with the Goddess Venus.” His charcoal eyes sparked.
“Interesting...well, they are certainly beautiful. You uh...you did a nice job.” Remus felt like he was crashing and burning in this interaction. All he wanted was a few flowers for his new flat. He didn’t expect...this.
“Thanks.” The man grinned and held out his right hand. “I’m Sirius, by the way.”
“I’m Remus.” Shaking the hand, he felt something warm shoot from his hand and up his arm. He tried to hide the gasp by clearing his throat. “Ahem, I’m opening a tattoo parlor next door.”
Sirius' face glowed in his broad smile. “Brilliant. Welcome to the neighborhood.”
Remus paid for the flowers and retreated back to his flat. He shut the door and released a long breath.
He wasn’t ready for what he thought this might mean. It was too soon.
Remus shook himself from his thoughts, and brought himself back to the present. He took a deep breath and stood. As he walked to the bathroom, he removed his shirt. Looking into the mirror, he traced a tattoo on his sternum that was indistinguishable unless you knew what to look for. Maybe it was time to stop running from...this. Before that can happen, Sirius needed to know the truth about him.
He closed his eyes and hung his head. The full moon was in a couple nights. He’d tell him then.

My First Graze Box: The Rest of It
I am a Grazer. Having subscribed to my first official Graze box and having decided to continue that subscription, I not only believe myself to be initiated, I believe my stomach to be initiated as well. My dreams are full of wrapper adventures while my meals are left half finished in the spirit of portioning off grazeable amounts of food. Never will I sink into the gluttonous sin of a full stomach again.
That being said, my boyfriend and I shared three snacks at once a few days ago, and I plan to eat the remaining four over the course of the hour it will probably take me to write this experience, as sublime as it will be.
Thai Style Sweet Chili, Anytime Energizer, and Jelly Doughnut are the snacks we chose to sacrifice together, my boyfriend and I. The chili was full of nuts and beans, some of my least favorite ingredients in life. I savored every sweet and slightly spicy crunch, for nuts and dried beans would never taste so good again. Each bite was like a prayer to the gentle and nourishing sun, cradling my spiritual crops--as well as my taste buds--with a mother's warmth.
The Anytime Energizer was less profound and carried more practical and gym-time notes. The pear pieces had too little taste for the volume of chew that they packed. The cherry was too cherry. The walnut was just right. My inner blonde-braided child sufficed that it was good eating for someone else.
Then came the astoundingly addictive tartness of the Jelly Doughnut. The name describes the flavor perfectly, yet does the snack so much disservice as real jelly doughnuts are just bags of puffed up wheat with uneven patches of Snow White foundation and too much chemically flavored edible lipstick caked onto the teeth. The one true Grazer's version is a collection of raspberry flavored jelly strings, small crisp cookie drops that smell like vanilla cake and crumble in the mouth like tea biscuits, actual dried fruit and tiny chopped slivers of almond that add a hint of cherry to each whiff as well as a creamier texture akin to almond milk, only in solidified form. Did I mention how much I dislike nuts and cherry?
I loved this.
Did I also mention that I'm still on my period and therefore have to nap in the middle of the day at the height of Advil efficiency like some old lady with lifelong post-surgery back pain? Well, here we are about three hours later and a New York Everything Bagel in hand to keep my hunger busy while the roommate and I wait for my boyfriend to come home with some delicious steaks in tow.
The NYE Bagel certainly smells like a bagel, which is one of many delicious morning smells to wake up to. Naturally, because I love nuts so much, I go for the cheese cashews first, stained with orange dust as they are. I don't know what they do with their nuts, but they're always creamy. If nuts always had the taste and texture of milk, I wouldn't dislike them so much. The poppyseed onion sesame sticks really pack that "everything" flavor, along with that of a crunchy toasted crust. This is bagel heaven for me. There's nothing better than biting halfway into the ring of a freshly crisped bagel, the brim of it hard and brittle and the furthest part of your bite digging through a thin granite top just before cutting into the tootsie bread center. The sesame sticks are just that experience over and over again, and the satisfaction runs deep into the root canal. Admittedly, I thought the roasted pumpkin seeds were going to be my least favorite part, but they're soft and almost fluffy, making up the warmed and tender part of the bread. Get a pinchful of all three ingredients together, and you get a tiny bagel with a lot of punch. I almost want to spread cream cheese on it, but there's no reasonable amount of surface area to work with.
Next up is the Snickerdoodle Dip. My favorite part about Graze snacks so far is always the wrapper removal. I get hit with a cozy aroma, cinnamon logs roasting in a pretzel fireplace. I dislike pretzels, but these sticks give me the same feeling as when I light a scented candle--I know I'm going to sniffle from allergies for a couple days, but at least for now my nose gets well pampered. I'm not sure if I've ever had snickerdoodles before, so I'm not sure what they're supposed to taste like, but I imagine they taste just like the fuzzy cookie butter caramel residue I just licked off the wrapper. The pretzel stick by itself is, as with my allergies to perfumes, full of regret. My nose predicted sugar and spice, but there was nothing nice. They do taste wonderful though and my roommate is apologizing for taking more than one. Whatever snickerdoodles are, the dip tastes like caramel graham crackers, and coats the pretzel with the same kind of family Christmas spirit as a stocking full of common necessities (toothbrush, floss, chapstick, socks). It's both delicious and heartwarming and I never want it again.
The Sweet & Spicy Beet Crunch is the first Graze snack I legitimately dislike. The jalapeno chickpeas have an airy crunch, further elevated by a mild pepperish fever. The sunflower seeds do nothing but add more disgustingly soft texture to the beet chips that don't deserve to be called chips. They chew without being chewy. They twist and bend around the grinding of the teeth and slowly deform under large amounts of pressure like half-hardened glue. After smelling something similar to the blue BBQ potato chips sold on the Jet Blue airline, my expectations were depressingly let down.
The Fantastic Forest Fruits is like a snack you'd expect to find in a fairy tale hermit cave. I imagine an old herbalist crone, 129 going on 130, her home littered atop the entire low ceiling of the cavern with hooks and ropes tied up around bundles of sage, cinnamon sticks, yew twigs, berry pouches, and numerous other forest collectibles. A small cavity in the wall has a smoked out cold fire going, keeping that small space dry and dehumidifying the rack above it. That rack is covered in some kind of mesh, and on top of that is the pile of soft, dried fruits that this snack comes from. I can almost smell the crone in these fruits. These are easily one of my favorite Grazing nibbles, if only because it appeals to my fantasy fascination. That, or it appeals to my current period cravings.
I can't wait 'til the end of the month when I get my next Graze box. And also when my period ends.

Hi friends!
This roundup of Peanut Free & Tree Nut Free Packaged Snacks for School has been a long time coming. You guys have been asking me for nut-free ideas for YEARS, literally…and to be honest, I’ve been putting it off. I’m not an allergy mama. My kids don’t have allergies and up until recently, they haven’t been in schools that require things to be nut-free so I selfishly haven’t had a whole lot of reason to write this post. But I finally sat down and did it!
A few things to note before we go further:
This is not an all-inclusive list. There are a lot of options out there. Some of which are not the healthiest. It would be impossible to include them all, and as an RD I approached this list as still wanting it to be filled with snacks that have some nutritional value and not just full of pretzels and potato chips (both of which are fine but not something I give my own kids every day, especially when not paired with a protein or healthy fat, etc. Just know that I did my best to include items that are somewhat healthy, that I would feel good about giving my own kids.
It’s still your responsibility to do your research. I spent a lot of time on websites and looking at packaging but things can change quickly in the manufacturing process so you still need to check all the labels yourself and check them every time you buy them..not just the first time.
I haven’t tried them all. Like i said, I’m not an allergy mama so we haven’t had the occasion to buy a lot of these products and therefore neither I nor my kids have tasted a lot of them.
Some wouldn’t be my first choice nutritionally. But most on this list are things I feel are good choices when packaged snacks are needed.
Peanut Free Snacks + Nut Free Snacks 
The best way to determine if foods are allergy-free snacks is to read the label since brands should have a warning statement or allergen list. Be aware of phrases like this:
“May Contain Peanut or Tree Nuts.”
“Processed on shared equipment with Peanuts or Tree Nuts.”
“Manufactured in a plant with Peanut or Tree Nuts.”
“Contains Peanut or Tree Nut Ingredients.”
You can also check the FAQs on the website but packaging should have the most updated info.
Some schools give guidelines that foods must not contain peanut or tree nuts but don’t require them to be from nut-free facilities. Some do. Be familiar with the rules for wherever you’re sending food so you can make sure to choose snacks that comply with their guidelines. And remember that although choosing allergy-friendly options like this can be a pain if your family does not have allergies, it’s important for the safety of a lot of kids and allergy families appreciate you putting in the time and effort to keep their kids safe. My hope is that this list will make your job just a little bit easier.

Is Allulose Keto? A Beginner’s Guide
In the world of sugar alternatives, allulose is a rising star. Unlike some sweeteners, such as sucralose and xylitol, it’s a real monosaccharide sugar. It shares the chemical structure of a typical carbohydrate, but it isn’t metabolized by the body. Research has shown it has no effect on blood glucose levels. This makes it an excellent option for keto dieters.
Allulose: A Rare Sugar
Allulose is often referred to as a “rare sugar” due to its minimal presence in nature. Other natural sweeteners, like stevia, taste sugary for a different reason. Stevia’s sweet taste comes from steviol glycosides, which offer up to 150 times the sweetness of sugar.
Allulose, on the other hand, offers about 70 percent of the sweetness of sugar. While it is less sweet, it still gets the job done.
It was first discovered in the 1940s. Trace amounts exist in a variety of edible substances. These include foods like wheat, raisins, figs, jackfruit, maple syrup, and molasses.
Manufacturers can create it through a natural enzymatic process. In the 1990s, Japanese scientist Ken Izumori identified the enzyme that converts fructose to allulose. This method is still used by companies today.
Most manufacturers are making allulose using corn or beet sugar. They isolate the fructose and turn it into allulose through a process of enzymatic conversion. The enzymes are then removed, which results in a potent and low-calorie sweetener.
Although allulose has been around for a while, companies have only recently begun marketing it as a sweetener or adding it to foods. In 2019, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave food manufacturers permission to stop listing allulose as a sugar. It’s still included in carbohydrate counts.
Allulose Sugar and the Keto Diet: An Excellent Low-carb Option
Allulose is sometimes referred to by other names, including pseudo-fructose, d-psicose, or d-allulose. No matter which of these terms appear on the label, allulose is a safe option for keto or other low-carb dietary plans.
A teaspoon of allulose contains about 4 grams of carbs. However, it contains no NET carbs. Net carbs are those that the body can fully break down into glucose. Therefore, allulose is essentially free of carbs.
It’s also free of calories. It contains around 10 percent of the calories in sugar, which amounts to about 0.4 calories per gram. This is too small an amount to worry about even for someone on a strict diet.
The Allulose Experience: The Benefits and the Side Effects
Allulose Benefits
Allulose is relatively new to the holistic scene, and researchers are still studying its benefits. Nonetheless, what we’ve learned so far about this low-calorie sweetener has us excited. Not only does it not impact blood sugar, but it appears to also help improve insulin sensitivity. This makes it a good option for diabetics as well as keto dieters.
One study found that allulose could suppress blood sugar spikes in people with borderline diabetes. The same study found no abnormal or problematic effects caused by long-term ingestion of the sweetener.
Early studies suggest allulose can help us lose weight even if we aren’t maintaining ketosis. During one study, researchers fed rats a high-sugar diet with or without supplemental allulose. The rats that received the allulose demonstrated lower body fat percentages and less weight gain. Studies have also linked allulose to a reduction in fat storage in the liver.

You want to look and feel your best, but you don’t want to deprive yourself. Natural sweeteners like allulose provide a way to enjoy delicious treats you love without the guilt.
Allulose Side Effects
We’re happy to report that allulose presents a low risk of side effects. The FDA warns some people may experience gastrointestinal discomfort after consuming large amounts. However, these effects are temporary and not life-threatening.
Researchers performed a gastrointestinal tolerance test to determine how much allulose a human can safely consume. The results showed that an adult up to 132 pounds can consume about 54 grams daily before side effects will begin to show up.
The only other negative of allulose is also a factor with other sugar alternatives. Eating anything sweet increases our sugar cravings. While this isn’t a problem if you stick to allulose, it could be an issue if you feel tempted in other situations.
For example, if you’ve been eating a lot of tasty sweets baked with allulose, you might start craving a sugar-filled dessert the next time you’re out to dinner. You can avoid this problem by enjoying allulose treats in moderation.
Everyone is different. If you’ve never tried allulose, start with a small amount and see how your system reacts.
How to Use Allulose: Making Sweets Keto Style
If you’re a fan of experimenting in the kitchen, you’ll love working with allulose. Although it’s less sweet, allulose tastes much like sugar. It’s texturally similar as well, making it ideal for creamy applications, such as ice cream and cake frosting.
Not only is the sweetener perfect for the keto diet, but it’s also easy to work with. It mimics white sugar in just about every way. For example, it has a similar browning and freezing point as regular sugar.
We and other keto enthusiasts have tested allulose against other types of sweeteners. We’ve noticed it contributes to moist, rich, and even caramelized textures. This makes it ideal for use in cookies and cakes.
As far as measurements, you can compare allulose to erythritol. It measures out about the same way.
Other Low-carb Sweeteners to Consider
If you don’t like using allulose for whatever reason, there are plenty of other keto sweeteners to try. Monk fruit is another low-carb sweetener that ranks high in terms of keto friendliness. It’s also ideal for bakers as it measures the same as sugar when properly blended with erythritol.
There are several other sweeteners that are excellent for keto folks, such as Splenda. However, sweeteners like Splenda often contain other types of sugar, such as dextrose, as fillers. Make sure you carefully read labels to avoid pushing your body out of ketosis.

Recipes to Make at Home
Our preference is to make our meals and snacks at home and take them along on our hikes. By making our own food we can control the ingredients which cuts down on salt, sugar and fillers. We can also control the taste to our preference. And the best part is that it saves us money – pre-packaged and dehydrated foods are very expensive.

Dehydrating your own beef and meats at home to make jerky will save you tons of money, and provide you with a healthier and tastier hiking food alternative.
Jerky
On our last multi-day hike we made our own beef and chicken jerky. We find packaged meats to be particularly expensive and we saved a huge amount of money by making it ourselves. It was fun and we got to choose our own flavourings to make the perfect jerky for us.
Here is the basic recipe we used, but check out for loads of great jerky recipes. We don’t have a food dehydrator, and you don’t need one. Just use your oven set to it’s lowest temperature and leaving the door slightly open:
If making beef jerky, use a lean cut of beef like ‘eye of round’, ‘bottom round’, ‘top round’, ‘sirloin tip’ or ‘flank steak’. We used 2 lbs of ‘eye of round’.
You can also use pork, chicken, turkey or salmon.
Slice all of the meat into 1/4″ strips.
Marinate the meat in whatever flavours you want. For the beef jerky, we went with our favourite teriyaki sauce and added hot sauce. For the chicken jerky, we went with a chili lime rub. Marinate meat in the fridge for 4-12 hours.
Remove meat from marinade and pat dry.
Since we used our oven, we put a toothpick through each piece of meat and hung it from an oven rack. Work your way until each slice is hung up with space around each piece – make sure they are not touching each other.
To cook jerky in the oven, first cook it at 300°F for 10 minutes to kill the bacteria. Then, turn the oven down to 160°F and prop open the oven door with a wooden spoon which allows moisture to escape and air to circulate. It could take anywhere between 3 and 8 hours to cook depending on the thickness of meat and cut of meat you use. Our jerky took 4 hours.
You know the jerky is done when it bends and cracks, but does not break in half.
Energy Balls
Energy balls are perfect to make for hikes. They are healthy, energy dense and you can add literally anything you like. They are also no-bake so they are simple to whip up in your kitchen.
Our favourite things to add are shredded coconut, coconut oil, almonds, pecans, chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, cocoa powder and dark chocolate chips.
Our go-to recipe is below, but feel free to add any ingredients you like:
