JUST THE EXCUSE I WAS LOOKING FOR

So, for me personally, a lot of the time when I draw fat characters, I'm not looking to specifically capture the specifics of fat as much as the feel of fat. Bulkier, rounder shapes in the right places that has a feeling of weight to em! A lot of that is intuition and simplification at this point, but it all works on the same frame as just any ol' person. Like take this-

For example. This is the basis for any body shape, not just the more average one that it may imply. Sure- it can be that average body shape:

But also a fat one too!

And a big part of that is knowing where fat usually tends to bunch up on the body, so lets take a look piece by piece! (Please keep in mind this is very simplified, and not completely precise in some parts)

THE FACE: Cheeks (in purple) and especially the chin (in light blue) are the places where a lot of the fat is gonna wanna gather and round out on your face! Additionally, theres a small pocket of fat beneath the cranium on the backside of your head. It's small, but it is there. I believe fat can build up elsewhere like the bridge of your nose and forehead, but generally speaking, you're gonna have a whole lot more buildup in other places first.

THE TORSO: A lot of the fat built up on the torso is gonna be sent to your tummy. More cushioning for vital organs, mostly out of the way, it just makes sense. Additionally, the lower backs fat builds up and joins with a patch of fat on your sides that forms what is typically referred to as the love handles to make that double belly look. Along with this, the immediate next target for the torso is the breasts, followed by the upper back!

THE ARMS: For this limb, a VERY notable amount of the fat present builds up on the tricep and bicep areas, lessening once you get towards the flexor and extensor areas. You can almost think of the arm as a sort of triangular shape, wide side starting from the shoulder and tapering towards the hand, which itself mostly builds up fat around the back of the hand and the fingers. The shoulders themselves don't build up too much fat unless you got a lot

THE LEGS: And finally, you can think of the legs having pretty similar curves to what you're probably already used to thinking. The front of the thighs getting a big buildup, along with the back of the calves, the other parts being flatter in turn. As far as the feet go- similarly to the hands, the top of the feet, along with the heels get most of the buildup, as fat on your soles would impede mobility. The glute, hip and crotch area will also especially build up fat, lending to the same triangular shape that you can see in the arm!

A big thing to note with fat is that it tends to taper off towards joints. Your knees, elbows, shoulders, hips, and all the other places are gonna have significantly less fat so that you remain mobile and flexible, as that's important!

Now that we have an idea of where fat builds up on the body, you might have something that looks kinda like this

Which yes, does demonstrate a solid understanding of the places fat builds up, lacks the weight you're probably trying to convey, which brings us to out next point! Fat is well... heavy! Gravity is what gives fat much of it's shape, especially as you tread towards larger and larger bodies.

This is demonstrated really well on the arms especially-

Those big ol' bits of fat'll really start to sag when left hanging, and they will squish like hell if they run into something. I like to think of these bits of fat as big ol' ovals that squash and stretch depending on if there's an obstacle in their way or not

These are the important shapes to remember when it comes to the weightiness of fat! If you take all of this into mind, you should be getting something a lot closer to that shape you've been after!

Oh, and always remember that fat bodies come in all variety of shapes and sizes! Play around with a whole lot, and seek out all the resources you can! it'll really lend to your knowledge when it comes to this kinda stuff!

And as I always recommend when it comes to learning art- look at what your favorite artists do with fat bodies. See what you really like about the fat bodies they draw and try to replicate it in your own work, I promise you it's one of the most helpful things ever.

This is like the most basic of basics when it comes to drawing fat bodies though. If there's any additional thing about fat bodies, or maybe you want clarification on something, don't be afraid to ask! If there's enough to cover, I'll make an addition to this post!

I’ve missed these waters so much, they’re so different from the tank waters, it’s so much better! I’ve missed this, I feel so alive, it’s like my blood is singing!” And Prowl is like, “wait no, this is still Wrong, something is wrong, the waters are still wrong.”

Oh no I don't think I'm the only one who've made shadowvanilla+custard content really, I've definitely seen arts of these two in the shadowvanilla tag wayyy before I've ever made the baby girl meme (which is my first time drawing them together)

The jester and king dynamic is such an cute/interesting aspect of their characters tbh (for both SMxPV and SM-custard) I'd love to see more of it explored someday!

So I’ve seen a little bit of dialogue from Ford, but how does he speak? Like what is his speaking mannerisms? Is it all gibberish? Does he stutter? Does he repeat words?

Hello, hello again, tiny cyclops in my inbox!

As I mentioned in this post where I go a bit more in depth on Ford's brain injury, Ford suffers from aphasia! Which is basically the loss of one's ability to express language and communicate, while not losing the ability to understand it. But I'm sure you already knew this; and if not, the more you know!

How does he speak? It really depends when you were to go up and talk to him in the timeline. His speech mannerisms the few following years right after his head trauma is very different from how he speaks now in canon! He's had 30 years to recover, after all.

Ford's speech right after his injury was practically non-exitstent. He was smacked in the face with all of the textbook definition symptoms of aphasia, ramped up to 100.

Speaking in short or incomplete sentences.

Speaking in sentences that don't make sense.

Substituting one word for another or one sound for another.

Speak unrecognizable words.

Have difficulty finding words.

Conversations with him back then were not "gibberish" per se, but more so just... slow. And frustrating for everyone involved, although no one could ever be more frustrated than Ford himself. I mean, can you imagine? He could barely say anything without monumental effort, and whatever meager words he managed to squeeze out of his throat were lackluster, to say the least. Every part of his speech were hindered: grammar, pronunciation, heck, even the tone, volume and rythm of his speech didn't always come out correctly.

Due to how recent his brain injury was, there was also the added physical impairments to his speech. The muscles involved in producing speech were weakened, affecting Ford's control and clarity of his words (this is also called: dysarthria).

From an outsider's perspective, listening to him would have felt a little like listening to an extremely corrupted audio file, or a faulty record player. He would often take long pauses in the middle of his words; his words sometimes blended into one another; and his sentences were short, and simple. I think this quote from a website I found about aphasia explains it best.

"Speech may be 'telegraphic' omitting small words such as 'the'. So, 'tomorrow I'm going to the pub with my wife for our anniversary', may be expressed as 'tomorrow...pub... wife... anniversary'. This requires the listener to accurately piece the message together."

So, yeah! As you can imagine, speaking for him was extremely hard. Often times, the townfolk he tried to speak to didn't have the patience to stick around while he finished a sentence, and gradually even Ford lost patience with himself, so he just. Gave up. Which was why he used to be much quieter in the beginning, lurking around town wordlessly, not even really bothering even when someone tried to initiate conversation with him. For a genius who once prided himself so much of his eloquence, losing that ability was a huge blow for him.

How fast one recovers from aphasia really depends on the severity of the injury. It can either take up to a few hours, days, maybe even weeks to fully reover with no long term repercussions, or the symptoms can last months, even years to shake off, and occasionally it's a lifelong condition. Ford, due to the severity of his injury, drew the short end of the stick, and was stuck with the lingering aftereffects of aphasia pretty much forever.

BUT, he evenutally managed to find the will to speak again! At some point during his 30 years of recovery, he decided that he'll figure this shit out himself, goddamnit, he was a scientist. He outsmarted a demon! He didn't have time to be depressed, he needed to relearn how to SPEAK!! (fuck yeah, determination, baby).

And learn he did. Very painfully, very gradually, Ford became basically his own speech therapist for a few decades and relearned everything his body and brain forgot. And although the results aren't perfect- he still stutters, he still gets stuck on words and he still stumbles over them- considering the fact that he had no professional treatment from a clinic or doctor available, it was good enough.

Now he won't shut up! (lovingly)

Hi! I don't want to be like that one anon (which, very rude. Everyone knew you didn't have malicious intentions), but I do think you have a case of "same face syndrome." Or rather, same head syndrome.

Regardless of fandom, if you line up your works and disregard any unique clothes/hair the characters have, they tend to look the same. For example, I noticed that in your Merlin fanart and MHA fanart, Merlin and Izuku cannot be told apart by just their faces. I feel a lot of your characters have the same long rectangular face and small round eyes. It feels as though you draw distinct design features (EX: Deku's hair, hero outfit, green eyes, green hair, etc.) onto an already generated base.

It's a distinct art style, but it's not great for capturing ethnic features if you stick by this formula! It will get you a lot of flak on the Internet, especially if you draw ethnic features out, even if it was by accident. Your art style must morph to the character depicted, not the other way around.

That may be why Mel in your art style doesn't look like Mel. She's missing her flat nose (I can see an attempt, but the nose is still too small at the base and positioned lower than Mel's real nose is), heart-shaped head (her face in the show is wider and her chin is smaller than your artwork), and her eyes are more almond-shaped rather than the round eyes you tend to depict in your artworks. If you compare her to Izuku in one of your more recent works, they can be twins! Or, siblings at the very least.

I think practicing more unique features would help tackle this! A flat, wide nose, a hooked nose, eyes with an epicanthic fold, "sanpaku" eyes, wide lips, thin lips, different head shapes, and a whole lot more! Playing around with face anatomy is so much more forgiving than body anatomy. It's fun to dissect a character into different shapes and see what makes a character look like them, and then converting it into your art style.

Although the characters you choose to depict tend to morph toward a single base, your art is genuine eye candy. Please do not let this incident discourage you, but encourage you to work on a variety of features to diversify who you can accurately depict. Of course, I am just a random anon. If you do not feel the need to answer this ask publicly or feel my hubris precedes me in critiquing your art, then don't answer! All I request from you is to keep this ask in mind before deleting it.

I appreciate your kind words! Once again, I totally agree with what you're saying, same face syndrome is something I struggle with and am always trying to improve on (if you compare my older art with my newer stuff I hope that you'd be able to see at least a small amount of improvement).

I try to take care in the way I depict characters, obviously I don't get it right all the time, but it is something I work on! I do a lot of character studies (I don't post a lot of them) (I haven't done any on Mel yet (obviously lol))

Again - I super appreciate the effort you've put into this ask which is why I wanted to answer it!

I did also just want to add for anyone else who might want to add their thoughts - art IS something I do for fun and relaxation and I currently don't have a lot of time to prioritise it
