hey, it’s the retyrement au’s anniversary! it’s been a year to the day since i posted my first crusty design iterations of these guys in response to my buddy @squid-hug’s funny textpost about human scrybes in a retirement home. i had no idea i would stick with the idea as long as i have, but i’ve been having so much fun with these characters in this setting
so, i gave them a bit of a glow-up! their designs have all been tweaked a little, and everyone’s got a bit of flavor text this time; i haven’t included all information i find pertinent about these guys because i didn’t want this to turn into a text-filled mess lol; that said i did wanna set the record straight on pronouns so those are all under the cut!
thanks so much to everyone who’s read OLD_FOLKS HOME up to this point, and to those who have enjoyed my art of this silly niche concept! though school’s slowed me down a bit, i have no intention of stopping, and i welcome anyone for whom this is your first proper introduction to this goofy AU ^^ hope you all enjoy it as much as i do
plaintext transcript under the cut:
Grimora Patel (she/her): Semi-retired pulp author; widowed under entirely inconspicuous circumstances
Kaycee Hobbes (she/her): Developer at Gamefuna; just kind of over her grandma’s supernatural antics
Royal Dominguez (he/him): Kaycee & Sawyer’s older cousin; works with the Angler
Sawyer Patel (they/them): Youngest grandchild; most interested in the paranormal
===
Leshy (he/him): “Retired” photographer; divorced from the Woodcarver; misses living in the wilderness
The Angler (he/him): Leshy’s closest friend, looks after his cabin; works as a fishing boat captain with Royal
The Trader (she/her, he/him as the Trapper): The Woodcarver’s granddaughter, not related to Leshy by blood; the Trapper is her TTRPG persona
===
Magnificus (he/him): Retired art professor; no descendants, but his students won’t leave him alone; used to have a glass eye, but lost it in a bet with Leshy
“Goobert” (he/they): Has a prolific online channel & shop; specialty: slimes & resins
“Pyrometrik” (she/they): Pike for short; avid LARPer; specialty: pottery
“The Lonely Wizard” (they/them): Wiz for short; online lurker; specialty: ballet & theatre
===
P03, or Poe Carder (he/him): Retired from middle manager position at Botopia Labs; Visited regularly by Luke, his grandson...
Luke Carder (he/him): Same old card youtuber; happy to be reconnecting with his grandfather

If I was a disabled mermaid who finally got fitted for a custom prosthetic tail, I'd want to visit my 70-foot-long deep-sea mermaid mother as well!

Do we have any idea why P03 turned the Lonely Wizard into a card in act 3??
Like… it’s established that it takes deliberate effort for a scrybe to turn a character into a card, right? Which is why P03 doesn’t just snap his fingers and make the other Scrybes into cards and take them out of the picture, he’s in a rush to get the game online (and also because even Leshy seems to think that making the Scrybes into cards was ‘too far’ in hindsight).
While we know he turned the Angler into a card as paypack (and because normal npcs are possibly easier to stick into a card than the Scrybes), we have an actual reason for why he did it. Spite! But we don’t have anything near as easy a reason for the Lonely Wizard.
Heck, to contrast things even further, P03 DOES comment on the other sliding puzzle reward, Mrs. Bomb’s Remote, but says absolutely nothing about the other one. And LW himself offers no thoughts on the matter, rightfully caught up in experiencing things.
Was it a kindness, having been a card himself and knowing how (unfortunately) stimulating it is? Was it out of some kind of strange want to keep Magnificus’ trials going, with the conditions of the drawer being shockingly similar to what the Lonely Wizard’s training was? Was it those similarities that caused the game itself to stick LW in that drawer, outside of any intention on P03’s part? Or was it as detached as P03 compelled by the rules of the game to choose SOMETHING to stick into the last drawer?
Plenty of POSSIBLE explanations, but none that seem to line up with how P03 does things.

ANGLER'S SCP REVIEWS: SCP-735
Tumblr media
Hello welcome to the very 1st issue of Angler's SCP reviews, where a silly goofy lady gives her very right and very correct opinions on SCPs.
The 1st SCP I'll be talking about is good ol 735, the insult box. It's a short and simple one. A box that says horrible things about you, which drives you to try and destroy it. Which never works.
735 is a foulmouth jerk, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like foulmouth jerks. Overall I don't have much to say about it besides I like it. It doesn't overstay its welcome, 735 has a clear personality, and it's just unexplainable enough for it to fit into the scpverse.
My only real complaint is that they censor him. Let the box swear, cowards.

I don't know what it is about the word but the title "angler", as a chapter name or episode or character title or whatever, used early on in some series or story is always bold and it promises greatness, the magnus archives for example. it's so odd and unprofound of a beginning that it is kind of promising something amazing, it's almost a ballsy beginning. my reasoning is very shaky but I've seen it a few times and it's consistent and I have no clue why

hello I would like to inquire about “sometimes characters …that aren’t narrators…are better” and also “hbd zainab 2022” if I am allowed a second one
“sometimes characters …that aren’t narrators… are better”
this is my google doc dumping ground for all my random Raphael POV versions of scenes from The Bedlam Stacks (the title is a joke and means no disrespect towards actual narrator Merrick Tremayne, who is my baby boy forever). There’s only two entries in there now. One is a scene from before Merrick and Clem arrive in Peru, between Inti and Raphael at church. The other is Raphael’s POV on the Tent Scene™️, because duh. Here’s an excerpt from the second one:
“As he shifts on the ground, trying to get comfortable, some stray motes illuminate the scars on Merrick’s back, pulled taut as he sleeps curled in on himself.  Without realizing, Raphael has stretched out his hand to bring his fingers close enough to trace the marks. He stops himself at the last possible moment, his fingertip hovering just above the skin. If Merrick had been awake, it would have been close enough to feel, but thankfully, he isn’t and Raphael is spared the embarrassment of having to explain himself. He’s not sure he could have even if he wanted to. Merrick was casual enough about the scars that day by the river, but Raphael doesn’t like the reminder that they exist. He doesn’t like to think of Merrick in pain, of all the different ways the world tried to beat him into shape and turn him into a weapon against somebody somewhere. He doesn’t like the reminder of Markham, now dead and buried in the Bedlam churchyard, the last place on earth he probably expected to end up. Merrick said he was important, from a good family, which means there’s probably a fancy mausoleum somewhere in England that will always be emptier than it’s supposed to be. Beyond that piece of information, Merrick has hardly talked about Markham since Martel showed up, but Raphael can’t imagine the death of his friend, no matter how complicated the circumstances, isn’t weighing on him.”
“hbd zainab 2022”
Can’t believe you ranked this one second in your priorities, but okay. So, my original plan for your birthday fic was not the prompt fill I ended up posting, but instead it was Modern AU for Rogue One where the gang is playing in a DnD campaign run by Bodhi, who’s getting practice as a DM before he plays the game with his students. Definitely not based on anyone I know or anything ;) I didn’t get very far with it, but here’s a bit from the beginning:
“I was hoping you’d be willing to play,” Bodhi says. “Oh, Bodhi, I—I wouldn’t be any good at that! It’s like…nerd shit.” He gives her an unimpressed look at that. “Jyn, you love Tolkien and T.H. White and Le Guin and all that shit. You love video games. You have a Twitch, for God’s sake. You love nerd shit!” “Yeah, but I mostly have a Twitch so I can get into fights with lonely, stupid men on the internet,” she says. “Besides, I’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons before!” “Which means you’ll be in the same boat as most of my students,” Bodhi points out. “And therefore your input will be very valuable to me.” “You can’t find anyone else to be your newbie?” “Well, Chirrut insists he’s never played before, but Baze insists he actually has. Either way, it was the 80s, so the rules have changed a lot since then, so he will basically be a new player. And it’s been a while for Baze too, but I know he watches Critical Role sometimes, so he’s more current on the rules and everything. And Cassian’s played a lot and been a DM plenty of times before, so he has a lot of experience—”
